Our One day Great Ocean Road and Rainforest Tour are the most popular, and it is not hard to understand why! In one day, we take in the  Surf Coast  with its sandy pristine beaches , the lush green rainforest of the Otways and the wild and rugged  Shipwreck Coast , home to the  12 Apostles  and many a dramatic story!  This is a full-day tour (and we mean full!) with pick-ups around 7-8 am and  returning to Melbourne  by about 8-9 pm. Be prepared for a road trip to remember.

On the other hand, our  One Day Reverse Great Ocean Road Tour  is perfect for those wishing to take the road less travelled. On the Reverse tour , we cover all the same itinerary points of the Great Ocean Road and Rainforest tour  (including the rainforest!) but in reverse.

This means we drive for a bit longer in the morning, inland through country roads, to come out on the Shipwreck Coast at about 11 am. We then explore  Port Campbell National Park , including the  12 Apostles , with far fewer other buses. Due to the more remote location at this end of the road, we have a fresh sandwich lunch that can be enjoyed at one of the stops along the way, if you are happy to avoid the crowds and have lunch on the go, then this will probably be the tour for you! We then come back to Melbourne in an easterly direction taking in the  Green Coast  and the  Surf Coast  along the way.

During the summer months, our  Sunset Great Ocean Road Tours  have a later departure of around 10-11 am and take you along the highlights of the  Great Ocean Road , including an extra stop at the  GOR Chocolaterie . You will not stop and walk around the rainforest on this tour, but we will still drive through the majestic  Eucalyptus forest  of the  Green Coast .

The  2 day Great Ocean Road  and  Philip Island Tour  combine the two most popular day tours into one action-packed adventure. After a full day exploring the  Great Ocean Road  in  Reverse  to avoid the crowds, we stay overnight in the seaside town of  Queenscliff . The following day we take a ferry across the bay where dolphins can often be spotted, and we head up the Mornington Peninsula to continue on to  Phillip Island , where you will have plenty of time to check out a range of  Australian wildlife  and watch the world-famous  Penguin Parade .

The  2 day  and  3 days option include the  Great Ocean Road  and  Grampians National Park tours , with the night’s accommodation included in the  Town of Halls Gap. In contrast, our  three-day tour includes a night in the town of  Warrnambool  on the  Great Ocean Road  at the end of day one and then  Halls Gap in the Grampians  for night two.

The standard accommodation included in the price of all our  multiday tours  is dorm accommodation in local backpacker hostels. We share in rooms of 6-8 people and will always be sharing with only people from our tour, no sleeping out in swags!

My Experience With The Great Ocean Road Wildlife Tour

The overall experience of The Great Ocean Wildlife Tour was pretty good . The tour’s highlight was our tour guide, Warren, who was knowledgeable and patiently answered all our queries.

Listed below are the stops taken on The Great Ocean Wildlife Tour.

Stop 1 – On my Great Ocean Road tour with the family, the first stop was Torquay Front Beach . It offered a quick taste of iconic beaches and coastal views, including a distant view of the famous Bells Surfing Beach. This brief 15-minute stop is perfect for taking in the scenery and snapping a few photos.

Stop 2 – Next was The Pole House , known for its unique architecture, suspended high above the ground. We only spent about 5 minutes here, but it was enough to get some great shots of one of the most photographed houses along the Great Ocean Road.

Stop 3 – The iconic Great Ocean Road sign was another brief stop, lasting about 10 minutes . It’s a must-do for that classic selfie, marking the experience.

Stop 4 – The expansive views at Cape Patton Lookout Point offered one of the best vistas along the road. This quick 5-minute stop was all about the view.

Stop 5 – Apollo Bay was our lunch break spot. We had an hour to explore the town, try local eateries, and dip our toes in the ocean.

Stop 6 – Kennett River was a highlight, especially with the chance to see koalas and parrots in their natural setting. Our guide was great at spotting them, and we spent about 25 minutes there.

Stop 7 – Mait’s Rest was another immersive stop, with a 30-minute walk through a forest of towering trees, capturing the essence of the area’s natural beauty.

Stop 8 – Gibson’s Steps offered a unique perspective of some of the 12 Apostles from the beach level. Standing so close to these massive limestone structures during our 25-minute stop was awe-inspiring.

Stop 9 – Of course, the Twelve Apostles themselves did not disappoint. We spent 30 minutes there, which felt just right for taking in the views and taking plenty of photos.

Stop 10 & 11 – The Razorback and Island Arch Lookout were quicker stops, each lasting about 5 minutes , but they offered more stunning rock formations and views.

Stop 11 – Our final major stop was Loch Ard Gorge , which was as magnificent as I’d heard. We spent 30 minutes exploring the rock formations and the rolling sea.

Stop 12 – On the way back, we stopped in Colac for dinner, a nice way to end the day before returning to our accommodations.

The tour was well-paced, with short stops for photos and longer ones for exploring and eating , covering everything from wildlife to geological wonders.

The main pickup point for The Great Ocean Road Wildlife Tour is The Great Southern Hotel Melbourne, 44 Spencer Street, Melbourne . However, you can also choose to be picked up elsewhere. Note that the pick-up place cannot be your choice but must be from the tour operator’s list.

There is no pickup from your hotel for The Great Ocean Wildlife Tour. Some websites mention pickups from your hotel, but that is incorrect. You will be asked to reach the nearest pickup point.

The Great Ocean Road Wildlife Tour starts at 7 AM .

Cancellation Policy

The good thing about this tour is its cancellation policy. You can cancel 24 hours before the tour date and will be offered a full refund .

We had to cancel once and were offered a refund as our cancellation was before 24 hours. However, we changed our tour dates, and they did it for us.

Number of People in the Tour

The Great Ocean Road Wildlife Tour has a maximum capacity of 24 people . I was told this is one of the most popular tours and is always full.

Wheelchair Access

Unfortunately, people dependent on Wheelchairs cannot participate in this tour. However, prams and strollers are permitted.

Lunch and Dinner

Lunch or Dinner is not included in The Great Ocean Road Wildlife Tour. Morning tea is available.

We paid AUD 133 per adult and AUD 111 per child for the tour.

The Great Ocean Road Wildlife Tour Review

My rating for The Great Ocean Road Wildlife would be 5 out of 5 . The tour guide made this a memorable day for all of us. The tour guide was humorous and knowledgeable, ensuring that we were not bored.

The kids enjoyed seeing Kangaroos and Koalas and were tired by the end of the tour.

Some people sitting at the back and right-hand side of the bus were not too happy about the Great Ocean Road experience . This was mainly because when you are on the Great Ocean Road, the scenic beauty is on your left side. Hence, if you get a chance, take the seats on the left-hand side.

Overall, we all enjoyed this tour and would highly recommend it to anyone.

(Phascolarctos cinereus)

Koalas are specialised folivores (leaf eaters) and their diet consists exclusively of the leaves of a small number (20-30) of eucalypts. Using their strong claws, koalas can quickly climb the tallest trees and grasp the leaves with their two-thumbed paws.

(Macropus giganteus)

Kangaroos are the biggest animals in the Otways, but what makes them really stand out is the way they move – bouncing across the horizon on their big, strong back legs.

(Wallabia bicolor)

If you see something that looks like a small kangaroo, on its own and in more bushy areas, it’s more likely to be a wallaby.

Long-nosed Potoroo

(potorous tridactylus).

An Otways favourite, the Long-nosed Potoroo is a tiny, fluffy cousin of the kangaroo, similar in size to a small rabbit. Although they are relatively common in the Otways, they are nocturnal, so not often seen.

(Dromaius novaehollandiae)

The Emu is the largest bird in Australia, and the second tallest bird in the world, reaching up to 1.9 metres in height.

(Thylogale billardierii)

These charming little kangaroos are only as tall as an adult persons’ knee. They are mostly nocturnal, but sometimes you’ll be lucky enough to encounter one feeding during the day.

(Bettongia gaimardi)

These small macropods are a yellowish-grey colour, with cream feet and a white belly. They are nocturnal coming out at night-time to feed on fungi, seeds, soil and bugs.

(Isoodon obesulus)

Another small, grey, ground dwelling mammal about the size of a rabbit, the Southern Brown Bandicoot can best be identified by their long nose, small rounded ears, big bottom, and short tail.

Otway Black Snail

(victaphanta compacta).

The Otways Black Snail is a very special species of carnivorous air-breathing land snail, found only in the cool temperate rainforests of the Otway Ranges.

(Acrobates pygmaeus)

Feathertail Gliders are omnivorous, feeding on pollen, nectar, moths, ants and termites, and their long thin tongues enable them to collect pollen and consume semi-liquid food. 

(Ninox novaeseelandiae)

Also known as the ‘Mopoke’, this is the smallest and most common owl in Australia.

(Dacelo novaeguineae)

Laughing Kookaburras are found throughout eastern Australia and are instantly recognizable by their wonderful call – it really does sound as if they are laughing – and their beautiful plumage.

(Malurus cyaneus)

This endearing little bird has a fascinating story. Adult males, with their bright rich blue plumage above and on the throat, are among the most brightly coloured of the species, especially during the breeding season when the blue turns iridescent. Their bellies are grey-white and the bills are black.

(Callocephalon fimbriatum)

Gang-gang cockatoos are found in the cooler and wetter forests and woodlands of south eastern Australia and can be seen frequently in the grounds of Wildlife Wonders. Listen for their call – it’s like a creaking gate.

(Eopsaltria australis)

These delightful little birds are usually found in pairs or groups of adults and sub-adult offspring in mid-story trees along tracks.

(Tiliqua Scincoides)

Blue-tongues are named after their bright blue fleshy tongues that they stick out when alarmed to frighten off predators.

The Southern Brown Tree Frog

(litoria ewingii).

One of Victoria’s common frog species, these noisy frogs are agile hunters and leap to catch insects in mid-flight. They feed mainly on flying insects such as flies, moths and mosquitoes.

(Eubalaena australis)

Southern Right Whales can grow anywhere between 14 and 18 metres and weigh up to 80 tons – that’s as much as eight African elephants!

(Megaptera novaeangliae)

Truly a sight to behold, this giant of the ocean obtains its name from the distinct large hump on its back, which can be seen as the whale arches its back when diving.

Excellent walking tour experience through different environments, in the bush with koalas and a baby one in the messmate trees, and native birds (photo of a mother bird on her nest right near the path), going through gullies, tree ferns, more filtered light tree area with a rare lily plant (photo), then into the open landscape with amazing views over the ocean, with emus, and also kangaroos, wallabies, plus smaller creatures were spotted. Seeing their research station gives an great insight into what they are doing there. After, we had lunch in the cafe which was delicious. Keep your eyes peeled! The Great Ocean Road Region offers so many different wildlife experiences – on land and in water, in their natural habitat or ready made opportunities to get up close to the native fauna.

8 of the best wildlife encounters

You can see kangaroos all around the region. It’s guaranteed at the Anglesea Golf Course (pictured) – they even do Roo Tours. Other great spots are on the Great Ocean Walk just west of Johanna Beach car Park and Princetown on the Gellibrand River Flats. If you’re in the Otways you’re probably seeing Wallabies – the smaller, darker cousins of the kangaroo.

Often out and about at dawn and dusk these unique creatures are found throughout the region enjoying fresh grass shoots and leaf tips.

Best Place to spot them: Anglesea Golf Course

Anglesea Golf Course is home to a large group of kangaroos. Please do not walk on the golf course to view kangaroos. They are best viewed from the road. Kangaroo tours available Monday to Friday 10am – 4pm, Saturday and Sunday by prior appointment only. Fees apply.

Koalas love to eat and sleep. They can often be found in the Otways and around the Great Ocean Road region. Great spots to look for them include Cape Otway (try camping under the koalas at Bimbi Park ), Kennett River, Wye River, Wongarra and Lorne. Sometimes they even come into the townships so look up into the gum trees and you might get lucky.

These cuddly creatures are prolific in the foothills of the Otway Ranges and are often seen snuggled into the fork of a tree. They are actually quite territorial so best to keep your distance.

Best place to see them:  Kennett River

Swamp wallabies are common in the dense lush undergrowth of the rainforest and other species can be found around the region. A cousin of the larger kangaroo they are often smaller and darker in colour.

Best place to see them:  Bay of Islands Coastal Park

Explore by night and you could be rewarded with the dazzling experience of glow worms. They love the rainforest so can be found around Lorne on some of the waterfall walks and trails and in the Otways rainforest. Melba Gully near Lavers Hill and Maits Rest near Apollo Bay are the most likely places to see them.

Note: it has to be dark so take a torch but don’t shine it directly at them and turn it off to get the full effect.

These little creatures make their home along the walking trails generally in dark, damp places – like soil banks with overhanging ledges, along creek embankments. Glow worms are shy – torches, loud noises or touching them may disturb them and cause them to ‘switch off’ their light and retreat into the darkness.

These large flightless birds can be found in family groups on the plains across the region, dining on seeds, fruits and small insects.  Emus are generally peaceful animals, though it’s recommended that you keep your distance as the bird can unleash a powerful kick or peck when threatened.

Best place to see them:  Tower Hill

All along the Coast you can spot whales migrating through the cooler months. Portland, Port Fairy and Warrnambool are likely places to see them – Logan’s Beach in Warrnambool is considered a whale nursery where mothers will bring their calves for the sheltered waters. Cape Otway Lightstation is another great place to spot humpacks and Southern Right Whales. Subscribe to Whale Mail to get sighting alerts .

Each year, roughly between late May and early October, Southern Right Whales return to their nursery at Logan’s Beach to give birth and raise their calves. They migrate along the coast before returning to the waters of Antarctica and can be spotted as far east as Lorne. During the summer months, the Earth’s largest mammal, the Blue Whale visits the waters of Portland. The average length of a Big Blue is about 22-24 metres and they can weigh over 100 tonnes. Blue Whales are mostly spotted from November to May. Cape Nelson and Cape Bridgewater are two of a few places in the world where Blue Whales can be seen feeding from land.

Best place to see them:  Logan’s Beach, Warrnambool (winter months)

These solitary little spiky creatures are not easy to see but are quite common in rainforest and dry sclerophyll forest regions where their favourite meal of ants and termites can be found. Often spotted crossing the road at the most inopportune time these little guys are fascinating to watch.

Best place to see them:   Port Campbell National Park

Known spots to spot this remarkable and elusive mammal are Lake Elizabeth and Mount Emu Creek in Skipton. You can take a tour with Otway Eco-Tours at dusk or dawn to canoe Lake Elizabeth near Forrest to spot these stealthy locals. Keep your eyes peeled when near any of the rivers and estuaries – where there’s a nice grassy embankment to hide you might be lucky enough to see one.

These very elusive creatures are by far the hardest to see and are most active around dawn and dusk when they hunt for food.

The rest of the time is spent in their cosy riverbank or lakeside burrow.

Best place to see them: Lake Elizabeth

A twitcher’s delight, the region is a bird lovers paradise. Cockatoos are everywhere there are trees while the coast, estuaries and lakes are havens for waterbirds. In the Otways you will find parrots and colourful robins. The varieties are vast – scroll through to preview the kinds of birds you can expect to see when you visit.

Other Animal Experiences

Farm animals.

They’re certainly not native but they certainly are pretty cute sometimes! If you are travelling with family or just from the city and not used to seeing farm animals you’ll appreciate the countless opportunities to see them due to the rich farming country throughout the region. You are likely to see cows, sheep, pigs, alpacas and even champion racehorses who have retired to greener pastures.

Meet the Maremmas

Have you seen the movie “Oddball”? It’s a true story (mostly). In Warrnambool, you can meet the Maremma dogs that have been trained to protect the penguins on Middle Island. Enquire at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village about tours.
