Dazzling Places to See Sunsets Around the World

Our readers recommend the best destinations to experience this golden hour.

No matter what time it is, there's someone in the world right now watching a sunset. This golden hour is perhaps our most universally adored sky show, yet it dazzles in so many different ways across the face of the planet. A sunset over the tundra appears quite different from one highlighting the shoreline of a lake, while cloud patterns, air quality, weather, and seasons change each view. Sunsets inspire artists, prompt national parks to playfully compete over bragging rights, and convince us to take a moment for the suspended drama of a slow but steady transition from day into night.

We recently asked our readers where they have witnessed the most impressive sunsets, and diverse answers poured in from our Facebook community . We enjoyed thousands of personal photos of colorful views around the world, reminding us to pause, look up, and enjoy nature's show. Here are just a few of our favorite reader recommendations to inspire you to chase after the next breathtaking display.

Hampi, India

"Among the places I visited, this is one of my favorites: Hampi, India , one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites . This is the Anjani Hills, the birthplace of Lord Hanuman. One needs to climb around 570 steps to reach the peak and witness the sunset. Also, the place is extremely serene with less visitors, where I can sit and soak in the quiet sunset." – Souptik Datta

"I have traveled all over the world and seen a lot of beautiful sunsets. I have yet to see one that beats those in Saskatchewan, Canada . They don’t call it 'the Land of Living Skies' for nothing!" – Celeste Sabourin

Cap Ferret, France

"Endless dunes and forest. No construction along the coast for miles. The great Dune of Pilat, the sandbars of Arguin, and the open Atlantic ocean. Even hazy, late-summer evenings (past 10 p.m.!) deliver the most stunning sunsets. You can even catch the elusive green ray!" – Nathalie Andrault

Davis Mountains, Texas, United States

"One June evening in West Texas , I was driving from Seattle to Corpus Christi, pretty bummed about having to leave the Northwest for what I perceived to be a featureless wasteland. Then somewhere near the Davis Mountains, I entered paradise. I wish I had a photo of that wondrous sunset. But I’ll have a picture of it in my mind all my days." – Anna Maria

Phú Quốc Island, Vietnam

"Colors are so surreal (sky blue, yellow, pink). On the way to Halong Bay , I felt like somewhere in sea heaven. It is exactly like a surreal painting of the ship I saw somewhere." – Diep Nguyen

Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States

"I've been the world over, and there is none better than Colorado Springs, Colorado . I take pictures of so much beauty. And every sunset is different." – Jeanne Roberts

Grand Canyon, Arizona, United States

"At the North Rim of the Grand Canyon during summer thunderstorms, the clouds march in during late afternoons like a battalion of puffy, white tanks, some the size of European countries. They reflect the colors of the canyons and then change in a nanosecond from soft greys to nearly neon oranges and peach, or deep bruising purples. Then the lightning comes and ricochets that powerful rumble through the canyon walls. It's absolutely thrilling to sit (inside) and watch the sunset as it illuminates the massive clouds and lights the canyon in ways that no manufactured lighting could begin to simulate. I'll never forget how wonderful it was to see that light show every evening in the summer I worked at the North Rim." – Dana Dahl

The Best Place in the World to Watch a Sunset, According to New Research

Get ready to book a ticket to Australia ASAP.

will travel for sunsets

Adrian Martinez/Getty Images

If you're the type of person who stops everything they're doing come dusk to watch the sun dip below the horizon, we've got some new research for you.

Bounce , a company specializing in luggage storage, conducted new research to determine the world's most beautiful destinations to watch a sunset. And, according to the company, the U.S. dominated the list — with several appearances in the top 10 — but a remote destination in Australia took home the top spot.

To come to its conclusion, the company began by creating a list of destinations mentioned in media outlets for their spectacular sunset views. Then, it searched  Instagram using the search terms "name of destination" with "sunrise" and "sunset" (like #SantoriniSunset) to find the total number of posts using these terms. The company also used the Light Pollution Map to collect the artificial light pollution in every destination. Those that scored below a certain point were removed from the ranking. Then, the scores were normalized for each factor to create a score out of 10 for each destination.

And after all that hard work, Uluru , the massive sandstone formation found in the center of Australia, took the No. 1 spot.

“Uluru scored top marks for its sunset scenes with a score of 9.13 out of 10,” the findings explained. “Uluru lies in the heart of the Northern Territory’s arid ‘Red Center’ and its nearest town is Alice Springs. The rock is sacred to Indigenous Australians and is thought to have started forming around 550 million years ago.”

The Maldives came in at second place thanks to the archipelago’s white-sand beaches and azure waters that perfectly frame a golden sunset, followed by Haleakalā, Hawaii, otherwise known as the East Maui Volcano, which scored an 8.86 out of 10 for its spectacular sunsets over the lush landscape. However, as the company noted, it would have ranked much higher on a list of best sunrises as it had more posts mentioning “sunrise” on social media (36,495 mentions) rather than sunsets (13,646 mentions).

Susmita Baral/Travel + Leisure

As for other superlatives, the findings note that Santorini, Greece, is the most recommended sunset destination, with 16 blogs and articles dedicated to its glory ( including ours ), while Bali, Indonesia, is the most Instagrammed spot if you combine sunrises and sunsets, with 184,848 posts mentioning the morning and evening spectacles.

10 Beautiful Sunsets That Will Inspire You to Travel

“Sunsets Are Proof That No Matter What Happens, Every Day Can End Beautifully.” ~ Kristen Butler

One of my favorite things to do when traveling is to pour myself a glass of wine and enjoy the sunset from whatever spot I happen to be in. There’s just something about the sun setting that ignites my wanderlust spirit. Maybe it’s the vibrant colors spread out over the horizon or maybe it’s the feeling of breathing in the last glow of sunlight; sunsets give me a sense of calm and contentedness but at the same time make me want to explore as much of the world as I can.  I have been lucky in my travels to see some pretty incredible sunsets and, while I mostly like to just “be” in the moment while watching them, I’ve captured some photos of a few that left me in total awe of Mother Nature. You’ll see exactly why when you take a look at these 10 beautiful sunset photos taken by me and my fellow She’s On The Go writers Andrea and Nyssa. Enjoy!

13 Most Beautiful Places To Watch The Sunset In The World, According To Our Travel Experts

My mother was always a big fan of sunsets. “Look at that gorgeous sunset!” she’d exclaim. “Big deal, the sun goes down every day,” I’d mumble as I rolled my eyes, unimpressed in true teenager fashion. Well, I turned into my mother, as we are all wont to do. The other day I even caught the phrase, “Look at that giant crape myrtle,” escape my mouth, and I knew the transformation was complete. I even buy rose-colored sunglasses to enhance the sunset, which is how the most ordinary evenings looked extraordinary to her.

From the violet crowns of Texas to sunsets over Kentucky Lake here in my backyard, I now enjoy sunsets just as much as mom. I’ve even had the pleasure of experiencing Grecian sunsets, which a couple of our writers below can attest are the best. When seeking the most beautiful sunsets in the world, we went to the experts: TravelAwaits contributors.

Our writers know the best spots to watch the sun go down. We asked TravelAwaits writers to describe the most stunning sunsets they’ve ever witnessed, from amazing orange and pink to purple-hued twilight. Here’s where you can find their favorite sunset views.

Sunset Maui Wailea Beach Fairmont Kea Lani Maui

1. Maui, Hawaii

Wailea beach.

When Arizona-based newspaper reporter, freelance travel writer, and travel blogger Cindy Barks thinks of sunsets, she thinks of Maui . She refers to Hawaii’s tropical Valley Isle as “a veritable sunset machine.” Barks says, “When I met my son and daughter-in-law in Maui in October 2019 for a weeklong stay, the sunsets ( and sunrises ) were outstanding wherever we happened to be. Whether we were having a cocktail at the Hotel Wailea or spending the evening in the forested area near Haiku, the sunsets did not disappoint.”

“Although it’s difficult to pick just one, my favorite sunset turned out to be the one we took in from the lanai in our Wailea Beach hotel, the Fairmont Kea Lani. We watched in awe as the orange globe dipped toward the Pacific Ocean, with vertical bright beams appearing amidst the clouds,” she describes. “The great company and wonderful surroundings probably helped, but for me, that sunset stands out among all others.”

Santorini sunset in the Greek Isles on a catamaran cruise

2. Santorini, Greece

A retired elementary school teacher, Jeanine Consoli is a freelance travel writer, photographer, and foodie. She describes her favorite sunset in the Greek Isles on a catamaran cruise in Santorini last month.

“This was a delayed COVID celebration for our daughters’ graduation from college and a family trip. Probably not the last, but it would be difficult going forward. With jobs and commitments, the four of us would find it hard to get time to travel like this again, and we cherished the opportunity. We spent the late afternoon sailing around the beaches, snorkeling, and admiring the volcanic landmass from the sea. As we sailed around the caldera, the actual crater of the ancient volcano, to the city at the very end, Oia, nothing blocked our view of the setting sun. The wide-open Aegean Sea spread out as the bright orange ball began to slowly dip into the deep azure water as the orange, purple, and blues spread out across the open sky. We all cheered and clapped at the sun dipped into the water and hugged tightly, savoring the beauty and the incredible moment,” says Consoli, who says she will cherish the memory forever.

bright orange sunset over the Pacific on the beach in Bandon, Oregon

3. Bandon, Oregon

Louisa Rogers is a self-described writer, leadership coach, trainer, ex-pat, hiker, cook, and paddleboarder. She and her husband Barry discovered the sleepy town of Bandon while bicycling down the Oregon coast in the early ’80s. “We were so charmed by this tiny hippie village, located about halfway down the coast, that after a week of hard-core camping, we splurged and stayed in a hostel,” Rogers explains. “Since then, Bandon has grown enormously, with many developments and a famous golf course with what are considered the best links outside Scotland.”

Bandon is also home to Circles in the Sand , which Rogers describes as “a labyrinth in the sand designed by artist Denny Dyke, who first created one in 2011 for his own walking meditation. Since then it has grown to become a popular community experience.”

“The heart of Bandon is still a funky village, where you can walk on the beach, stroll on the Old Town boardwalk, eat clam chowder, visit art galleries, and buy souvenirs,” according to Rogers, who returns annually to meet up with nearby family. “Last month, after we walked on the beach, admired rock formations, and paddled on the Coquille River, we enjoyed my cousin’s pasta in our van. We capped off the evening by watching this sunset,” says Rogers.

Northeast Kansas sunset: old barn with field of flaxen wheat in the foreground

4. Northeast Kansas

While sunsets observed from white sand beaches or seen as the sun slips behind majestic mountains are regularly cited as some of the most beautiful, Midwesterner Sage Scott admittedly lives pretty far from either of these landforms. As a single mother of four, the Kansas City -based travel blogger writes for people who have wanderlust and a real life.

Scott thinks that “some of the most beautiful sunsets are when the big blue Kansas sky slowly turns a golden orange as the sun slips behind the horizon in the Sunflower State. And the sunset is even more beautiful when there is an old barn or field of flaxen wheat in the foreground.”

“During my travels, I have witnessed some truly spectacular sunsets. I’ve watched the sun slip behind the Pacific Ocean from Kekaha Beach in Kauai, paint a brilliant backdrop behind the gnarly trees in Joshua Tree National Park , and turn the mountains in Sedona the most brilliant shade of red,” Scott reflects. “But as we Kansans are constantly reminded by the endless Wizard of Oz jokes tossed our way, there’s no place like home.”

St. Lucia sunset from a catamaran

5. St. Lucia

The most glorious sunset Christine Chagaris ever witnessed was back in 2010 during an island catamaran cruise on a visit to Sandals Grande St. Lucien resort. The Caribbean island of Saint Lucia makes for a romantic getaway, whether you’re looking to elope or celebrate an empty nest . Taking a catamaran is just one of the many shore excursions available.

As their group sailed the crystal clear waters on a balmy, early evening, Chagaris describes “the sun setting amid a faintly pink-hued sky and pillow-like clouds in the distance.” Happy to have her camera ready, Chagaris says the image she captured evokes “that blissful feeling one gets when all is right with the world and everyday worries just fall away. Just looking at it puts me there again.”

stunning sunset over the South China Seas

6. The South China Seas

Raised on stories of the high seas by her Captain father, Rebecca Hall decided to see what all the fuss was about for herself. In the summer of 2013, the Girl Gone Greek author took a 31-day voyage from Athens, Greece to Hong Kong aboard a container ship. “Yes, container ships do occasionally take passengers and I was the only one onboard this 27 manned crew,” Hall explains. “We traversed the Suez Canal, the Red Sea , sailed through the Arabian Gulf, and then the South China Seas, stopping off at various points.”

“There were many sunsets to be marveled at on that trip,” she reflects. “Looking out for the rare light phenomenon of refraction (when the sun hits the horizon and a green light bounces off). However, my favorite was as we drifted for a few days in the South China Seas, awaiting instructions to travel onwards to HKG. With the cloud formation, I feel this is so atmospheric and summarizes that despite hard work, why life at sea is so beautiful.”

Purple and pink sunset in Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island in The Galápagos, Ecuador

7. Galápagos, Ecuador

Puerto ayora, santa cruz island.

The best sunset former Emmy Award-winning television newscast producer Erika Ebsworth-Goold has ever seen took place in the Galapagos . She and her husband opted to stay in Puerto Ayora. With 12,000 residents, it is the chain’s most populous town.

“I can’t say enough about the biodiversity of the islands,” remarks Ebsworth-Goold. “It was a bit like visiting the land of the lost, as we watched giant tortoises ramble across the countryside and marveled at the underwater ecosystem on each of our snorkel trips. The remote island chain has long been protected in an effort to keep it as pristine as possible, and a fact certainly reflected in the sky that evening.” After a long day of snorkeling off the coast of Santa Cruz Island, Ebsworth-Goold snapped the photo above on their last evening on the walk back from dinner. “Yes, it’s in heart of Puerto Ayora. But those colors? You can’t find them anywhere else on earth,” she surmises.

Black and white photograph of inside Alcatraz. Fiery orange sunset over San Francisco Bay can be seen through window.

8. San Francisco Bay, California

Alcatraz island.

Award-winning writer Vanessa Chiasson is aware that San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island isn’t usually associated with beauty. “But there’s remarkable scenery if you know where to look,” Chiasson opines. “The buildings of this once-notorious prison are surrounded by beautiful gardens, some of which were started by prisoners decades ago.” According to Chiasson, “In addition to the usual tours of the property, there are even periodic garden tours led by docents!”

“Inside, things are decidedly grimmer,” Chiasson recalls, “until you notice a glimpse of the brilliant sunset through the windows.” Dubbed “The Rock,” Alcatraz has a storied history. Al Capone was once an inmate, as were conscientious objectors during WWI, often under brutal conditions. “I couldn’t help but think what this glimpse of yellow, orange, pink, and vermillion would have meant to them,” reflects Chiasson. “Seeing the sun start to set by the Golden Gate Bridge on the boat ride to Alcatraz was beautiful, but catching a glimpse of it from inside was much more poignant and memorable.”

Gorgeous sunset over the Aegean sea in Mykonos, Greece

9. Mykonos, Greece

As we’ve already established, the Greek Isles are home to some stellar sunsets, and Mykonos is no exception. Melody Pittman and her daughter Taylor Hardy write about luxury travel, culture, and food on their blogs Travel the South and Wherever I May Roam . “The best sunsets I’ve laid eyes on were the evenings in Mykonos, Greece,” Pittman affirms.

“Every day of our 11-day Greece vacation was magnificent, but there is just something magical about Mykonos,” Pittman observes. “It’s romantic and dreamy, yet worldly and sophisticated, and the sunsets are a daily function, just like eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner.” She describes Mykonos sunsets as “almost tangible — like you could almost touch it in the night sky.” Rooftop and restaurant patios offer the best sunset seats money can buy, Pittman advises. “It seemed like everywhere we were, people just stood and watched when it was time for the sun to set. Time stood still. We all just absorbed the wondrous day’s ending together.”

Fiery orange sunset over the Pacific in Long Beach, Washington

10. Long Beach, Washington

Stretching for 28 miles, Long Beach is the longest sandy beach on the West Coast. As writer Jo-Anne Bowen describes in her article Discover Washington’s Coastal Hidden Gem: The Long Beach Peninsula , the area boasts miles of sandy beaches, bird watching, historic homes, kite flying, and historic lighthouses, and more. This under-the-radar destination is perfect for a family vacation , fall camping , or both.

Bowen’s best sunset happened to be in her home base of the Pacific Northwest. “The clouds seemed to be on fire with the rays of the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean,” she recalls. “Team this setting with the feel of sand beneath my toes, the soft roar of the ocean surf, and the beautiful fall weather and you have the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen.”

sunset seen from a boutique hotel Kuşadası, Turkey as a woman swims in the infinity pool

11. Kuşadası, Turkey

Authors , entrepreneurs, and world travelers Diana Laskaris and Sue Reddel are a package deal, so it’s no surprise that they explored Turkey together. “When we took an extended visit to several areas of Turkey, we had the opportunity to see many lovely natural areas, places filled with important antiquities, and busy metropolitan cities as well,” the duo recaps.

“Turkey is a huge country, but our favorite spot to watch the sunset is a beach town along the coast called Kuşadası,” the pair declares. “People visiting the ancient ruins and historic amphitheater at Ephesus often pass through this beautiful seaside community that hugs the western Aegean. “But the sunset we saw from our small hotel in a quiet corner of Kuşadası was breathtaking and memorable.”

“Visitors often discover Kuşadası when passing through by land to visit the nearby ruins or as a stop on a cruise line,” according to Laskaris and Reddel. “But locals know it as one of the gems of the Aegean, and many have summer homes there. A swim in the pool of our boutique hotel at sunset was as peaceful and refreshing as it was unforgettable. Watching a golden Kuşadası sunset over the sea was a highlight of our Turkish adventure.”

Fiery orange and purple Texan sunset. Photo taken near Walnut Springs, TX.

12. Walnut Springs, Texas

Last fall, Texan travel writer and photographer Janie Pace was fortunate enough to capture the most beautiful sunset she’d ever seen from her cabin just west of Walnut Springs, about an hour and a half south of Fort Worth . “The sunset painted the sky with a rainbow of purples, flaming oranges, yellows, and golds like I have never seen before,” Pace relays. “I have photographed a number of sunsets since then, but this one is at the top of the list.”

sunset over the water in Menemsha, Massachusetts

13. Menemsha, Massachusetts

Located off the coast of Massachusetts on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, Menemsha is a small fishing village where tourists and locals flock to watch the sun dip into Vineyard Sound each evening. TravelAwaits V.P., Missy Glassmaker, says the sunsets are made even more spectacular by the fresh seafood you’re able to devour while watching. “Bring a beach blanket and a bottle of wine, and prepare to enjoy all the lobster, chowder, steamers, mussels, and more from the fish markets that are just steps from the beach.” Parking is extremely limited, so be sure to arrive early and stroll through a few nearby shops or just relax on the beach while you wait.

Pro Tip: If you wait to order your seafood until you arrive in Menemsha for sunset you may be out of luck. Call  Larsen’s Fish Market  or  Menemsha Fish Market  early in the day and put in your order so it’s ready for when you arrive.

There's something majestic about the sun setting for the day, but what does a beautiful sunset actually mean? For some, it's the orange glow setting behind a silhouetted building. For others, it means watching shades of pink and purple sweep over a viewpoint. Essentially, a beautiful sunset means whatever you want it to. We're all looking at the same sunset, but we all have our own experiences with them.

Below, we've selected the world's best sunsets. These take you all around the world, from vast deserts to city lights. Remember to come back to this post when you're in need of holiday inspiration!

For more sun-related recommendations, read our round-up of the best winter sun destinations around the world .

The Taj Mahal in the Indian state of Agra is regarded as one of the world’s architectural wonders. It transforms into one of the best sunsets in the world when the day comes to an end and the sun starts to set behind it. The sun’s rays bend and wind round the white marble dome, bathing the stuccoed walls, minarets and garden in a soft pink and orange haze.

Consider taking a day tour from Agra to experience both, the majestic sunrise as well as the romantic sunset at Taj Mahal. Or are you planning to visit other places in India as well? Our local experts can help organise not only your Taj Mahal tours, but trips all over the country.

Chile’s Atacama Desert is so dry that plants find it difficult to sustain life here. This is where the 2001 film Space Odyssey was shot, the desert doubling up as the Moon’s arid surface. Small populations cluster round water-filled oases, witness to an incredible sunset each day. Sandboarding and sunset excursions are a popular way for tourists to enjoy the spectacle of the fiery sun sinking over the bone-dry land.

To beat the crowds, take a VIP tour from Atacama to the Valle de la Luna in a small group setting. And of course, if you're planning to explore Chile further, get in touch with our local expert today for a personalised quote.

Rearing 4478 metres skyward, the mighty Matterhorn is the icon of the Swiss Alps. The sight of the sun setting behind its snow-streaked slopes is truly awe-inspiring. Head to the futuristic-looking, eco-friendly Monte Rosa hut to catch this cool sunset. The trip there requires plenty of energy and pluck but the views are certainly worth the effort.

Punta del Este is a chic and fashionable resort town. It's Uruguay’s answer to Europe’s glitzy St Tropez! Punta del Este sits on a peninsula with the Atlantic sea on one side and a calmer estuary strip on the other. best vacation destinations to watch the sunsets in USA

Cannon Beach, Oregon

By Jessica from the Uprooted Traveler

Cannon Beach is a small and charming coastal town along the Oregon Coastline, famed for its 235-foot tall sea stack, Haystack Rock, jutting out of the Pacific Ocean below. It is a fantastic vacation destination in the US to watch beautiful sunsets.

Insider Tips

The best place to watch the sunset is right on Cannon Beach itself. Between Haystack Rock, the surrounding sea stacks and the sun sinking into the ocean water, it’s quite a spectacular sight.

To really kick up the experience a notch, consider making a bonfire right on the sand—there’s nothing better than feeling the warmth of the campfire, while the cool breeze of the ocean whips against your face.

Other Things To Do

Besides epic sunsets, there’s plenty of things to do in and around town. For example, explore any of the amazing hikes near Cannon Beach , like in the neighboring Ecola State Park. Here, you can hike through a coastal forest to the secluded Crescent Beach (seriously, you have a good chance of getting the beach totally to yourself!) or to the popular Indian Beach.

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider booking a surfing lesson at Short Sands Beach, just a short drive away from Cannon Beach and widely considered one of the best places to surf in the state. If you’re not into submerging your body in frigid water, you can alternatively just lounge on the beach and simply watch the brave surfers take on the waves.

Best Way To Reach Destination

To get to Cannon Beach, fly into Portland and make the hour and 20 minute drive west. There’s also a limited number of daily buses from Portland to Cannon Beach which will take a bit over two hours.

Best Time To Go Or Avoid

The best time to visit Cannon Beach is in the summertime, when the temperature is warm and pleasant and the sky is clear.

While the town has moderate temperatures year round, there can be some pretty intense fog and low-hanging clouds, from late fall through springtime, which might obscure your sunset views. Then again, it can also make the rugged Oregon Coast look that much more moody and beautiful.

Accommodation

Jessica says, “For a fantastic place to stay in Cannon Beach, consider the Hallmark Resort and Spa , which is the closest hotel to Haystack Rock, literally steps away from the beach, and provides warm cookies upon check-in.”

best cities in United States to watch beautiful sun sets

Brooklyn, New York

By Martha from MayCauseWanderlust.com

New York City doesn’t need much of an introduction: it is one of the most exciting cities in the world and a popular destination for travellers worldwide.

Its’ iconic skyline is eye-catching at any time, but at sunset, it is especially spectacular.

A great place from which to watch the sunset over Manhattan is Brooklyn. In the Dumbo area, around the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, there are various viewpoints which offer waterside views of downtown Manhattan as the sky changes colour and the lights of the city turn on.

The Michelin-starred River Café is perfectly located to observe the sunset as you dine – it’s really magical.

For a view of the sun setting behind the mid-town skyscrapers, try a rooftop bar in Brooklyn, such as Westlight in the William Vale hotel (a good place to stay if you want city views, by the way).

Twice a year, around May 28 and July 13, you can also catch ‘Manhattanhenge’, a phenomenon where the setting sun aligns perfectly with the grid streets of midtown Manhattan.

While you’re in New York, there are many world famous sights like the Empire State Building, Times Square and Central Park. However, you could also check out some more unusual and  unique things to do in NYC , like the Color Factory or a Coney Island sideshow.

If you are a first time visitor to New York and are looking for important tips on where to stay, how to save money, how best to get around the city, how to avoid tourist traps and how to stay safe, then this is a must read: 50 Best New York City Tips For First Time Visitors .

If you are traveling with teenagers and are looking for a fantastic weekend itinerary, or a list of amazing things to do, please check out 10 Great Things To Do With Teens In New York City In Summer and An Action Packed Weekend In New York City With Teens .

You have three airports from which to choose if you want to fly into NYC: John F. Kennedy International (JFK) is the main international airport for NYC and is based in Queens. Newark Liberty International (EWR) is relatively easy to get to and from if you’re staying in Manhattan. Finally, LaGuardia (LGA) is more popular for domestic flights and is also based in Queens.

You can visit NYC year-round – there are attractions that come with each season, but Spring and Autumn are especially nice. In these shoulder seasons, the weather is mild enough to explore on foot and the city gets a makeover: blossoms and blooms in Spring and warm tones as the leaves change in autumn.

If you would prefer to stay in Manhattan, the fashionable  Arlo SoHo  is an ideal spot with rooms with a view. If you prefer to linger in the coziness of your hotel, refuel at Arlo SoHo’s rooftop lounge or speakeasy-style cocktail bar.”

best holidays for pretty sunset in united states

Horseshoe Bend, Texas

By Bernadette from Explorer Chick

Horseshoe Bend is Instagram-famous for its namesake shape that the Colorado River carved out of sandstone over millions of years. Watching the sunset over this geologic wonder is a bucket-list item that is easy to do on a US holiday.

Once in Page, it is painless to reach the overlook. All you have to do is take a 10-minute drive up to the park, pay the $10 entrance fee, and leave your car in the lot. The trailhead’s well-marked path is simple to follow and it is one of the most accessible walks you will do.

Sunset is prime time for tourists. If you are into photography, bring a wide-angle lens to get the whole canyon. It really is beautiful during sunset, so you will undoubtedly take many pictures.

Only part of the 1,000-foot-high rim has a guardrail, so be aware of where you are stepping!

The walk back to the parking lot has a bit of incline that may have you huffing and puffing.

There are a lot of hiking and outdoor activities to do at Glen Canyon National Recreation Center.

Today the Glen Canyon Dam controls the water flow of the Colorado River and you can kayak or take a guided boat tour of Horseshoe Bend to see the view from below.

Antelope Canyon is nearby, and you’ll have to book a guided tour to walk through the vermillion-colored slot canyon.

While there is an airport in Page, Arizona, it is small. Most commercial flights come into Phoenix, Arizona, or Las Vegas , Nevada. A road trip is par for the course, and it is a gorgeous drive filled with endless vistas and impressive stone formations. The drive from both cities will roughly be five hours, depending on how fast you drive, road conditions, and traffic.

It is the desert – summertime is extremely hot and winter cold. Always check the weather before heading out and bring water when it is hot and bundle up if it’s cold. Avoid visiting during the hottest parts of the day since the path is uncovered.

Bernadette says, “Most likely than not, Page, Arizona will be your homebase for a trip to the area. The area has lots of cheap accommodations and camping is an option too.

best west coast city in usa to watch sun going down

San Francisco, California

By Caroline from Pictures And Words Blog

There’s much to love about San Francisco, with its stunning natural beauty, vibrant neighborhoods, and diverse culture. It’s also home to the Golden Gate Bridge – one of California’s most iconic attractions – which is also one of the best sunset spots in the city and on the west coast of the United States.

While there’s no bad view of the Golden Gate Bridge, there are a few special places that make for a spectacular sunset view. One of the best is Battery Spencer, from where you will find a postcard-worthy view of the bridge with the city skyline in the background.

Other places to catch an incredible sunset view of the Golden Gate Bridge include Golden Gate Overlook, Marshall’s Beach, and from the Batteries to Bluffs trail.

Insider Tip

San Francisco has microclimates, so even if it is a beautiful clear sunny day where you are, check out the live webcam to check the bridge weather conditions before you go.

Other popular attractions in San Francisco include Alamo Square where you can catch a view of the Painted Ladies (pretty Victorian houses), Golden Gate Park, Chinatown, and Fisherman’s Wharf for shopping and restaurants down by the water.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is located 14 miles south of the city. You can rent a car or take a BART train to downtown San Francisco.

You can access the Golden Gate Bridge by taking a Muni or Golden Gate Transit bus.

Fog is notorious for covering the bridge – it even has a name – Karl! To have the best chance of witnessing a gorgeous Golden Gate Bridge sunset, visit in October, when you’ll find the warmest weather and the most sunny days.

Caroline says, “You’ll find plenty of accommodation options in San Francisco, from hostels, boutique hotels, luxury hotels, and more. Consider staying near Union Square or the Financial District for the best hotel options and easy access to public transit.”

best mountain top in America to watch sun go down

Maui, Hawaii

By Anu from Destination Checkoff

Maui is world famous and one of the best places in the United States to catch beautiful sunsets. In particular, watching the famous Maui  sunset on top of Haleakala  is one of the most popular things to do in Maui.

Haleakala summit is at the top of Haleakala National Park, 10,000 feet above the clouds. The colors of the sky during sunset are magnificent!

You do not need reservations to go to the Haleakala summit for sunset, but you do need to pay the National Park entrance fee at the gate. It takes about 2-hours to drive to reach the summit from West or South Maui where most of the resorts are.

The drive up to Haleaka is adventurous with curvy mountain roads. Plan to arrive at least one hour before sunset so you can find parking and a spot to view the sunset.

You can view the sunset from either the summit or the Visitors Center parking lot. If you choose to go outside, it gets very cold so bring layers!

Maui is a great vacation destination. It is also famous for the Road to Hana drive, a 52 mile’s drive that has 620 curves and 59 bridges. It leads you through spectacular rainforests, gorgeous waterfalls, plunging pools and incredible seascapes.

Maui is also chock full of beautiful beaches, snorkeling, and whale watching from November to March.

To reach Maui, you would typically fly into the Kahului International Airport on Maui. Public transportation is limited so you will need to rent a car.

Maui offers stunning tropical weather all year round. There really isn’t a bad time of year to go.

Anu says, “ Kula Lodge in Kula is a great place to stay near Haleakala summit. Paia Inn is also a fantastic place in the coastal town of Paia.”

best beach destination in usa to watch a gorgeous sunset

Clearwater, Florida

By Lanie from Make More Adventures

Located on Florida’s Gulf Coast, Clearwater Beach has a soft white sandy beach that offers spectacular sun sets on the east coast of the US.

The water in the Gulf of Mexico is warm enough for swimming and depending on the season, many visitors are still swimming as the sun goes down. From in the ocean, on a boat, or anywhere on the beach, it is easy to view the nightly sunset.

Toasting the sunset in Clearwater is a tradition that can’t be done on the beach, but often occurs on sunset boat tours and in nearby bars with views such as Jimmy’s Crows Nest.

Tate Island Grill at Sandpearl Resort is a great place to watch the sun go down. Tables are located right near the beach and live music is often playing. In addition, hammocks and seats around a fire pit are located on the beach outside of the restaurant.

There are many things to do both day and  night on Clearwater Beach . Clearwater Marina has a wide range of boat trips including dinner cruises, dolphin-watching cruises, and a pirate ship ride in addition to fishing charters, jet skis, and parasailing.

Nearby, Pier 60 has a playground and large inflatables. Each night, Sunsets at Pier 60 take place for 2 hours before and 2 hours after, and include an artisan market and street performers.

Two airports are near Clearwater Beach, both St. Pete/Clearwater Airport (PIE) and Tampa International Airport (TPA). Clearwater Beach is 25-30 minutes away from each airport. Once on the beach, visitors can easily walk or ride on the Jolley Trolley up and down the 2.5-mile-long beach.

Spring break is a popular time to visit Clearwater Beach. It is hot in the summer and usually rains a little bit each day. Both locals and visitors show up to Clearwater Beach year-round. Even in winter, Clearwater Beach sunsets are celebrated.

best west coast places in united states to see a beautiful sun set

Seattle, Washington

By Lisa from Waves And Cobblestones

Seattle, Washington is one of the most popular cities in the Pacific Northwest. It’s famous for its iconic landmark, the Space Needle, and for being the birthplace of grunge music and the location of the first Starbucks. Since Seattle is located on the west coast, it is also one of the best cities in America to watch sunsets.

One of the best places to watch a sunset in Seattle is from the Olympic Sculpture Park. Sit back and watch the sun dip into the waters of Elliott Bay from its terraced hillside overlooking the water.

There are some benches and chairs scattered around Olympic Sculpture Park, so get there early to grab a seat. Alternatively, just bring along a blanket and stake your claim on the lawn.

The best location is by ‘Eagle’, a huge red abstract sculpture atop the hill.

There are plenty of other  amazing things to do in Seattle . The Space Needle is one of the most iconic landmarks in the world. Take the elevator up to the top and enjoy fabulous 360-degree views of Seattle.

No visit to Seattle is complete without a trip to the famous Pike Place Market where you can find the freshest local produce and tasty eats, and pick up a unique souvenir.

Visitors fly into the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. It’s about a 13-mile drive to the Olympic Sculpture Park.

You also can take the light rail from the airport to downtown Seattle, and then take a bus to get close to the park.

The best time to visit the Emerald City is in the months of May through October. You’ll avoid the rainiest months, but you’ll have to contend with more tourists, especially in July and August.

Lisa says, “Stay at the Palihotel Seattle . This boutique hotel has a fun retro vibe and is only a two-minute walk from Pike Place Market.”

best national parks to watch pretty sunsets in America

Arches National Park, Utah

By Jamie from Photo Jeepers

Delicate Arch is one of the most iconic and recognizable natural arches in the world. Located in Arches National Park in southeast Utah, it stands at a height of 65 feet and spans 46 feet across.

Delicate Arch is THE best place to see and photograph the sunset at Arches National Park to capture the red-orange glow on the arch and surrounding landscape.

From the National Park entrance, it’s about a 15 minute drive to the trailhead parking lot.

To reach the arch itself requires hiking 3 miles roundtrip and climbing 480 feet in elevation. This hike is mostly uphill and takes 1 to 1 ½ hours, if you are reasonably fit.

Due to the popularity of Delicate Arch at sunset, it’s best to get to the trailhead 2 or 3 hours before sunset so there’s time to find a parking spot.

It will also allow time to walk around the arch area to take pictures before sunset. The best photo spot is with your back to the setting sun to capture the golden hour light on the arch with the La Sal Mountains in the background.

Be sure to pack a headlamp for the hike down after sunset!

While at Arches National Park, be sure to explore the scenic drive, hike a trail or two, and have your camera ready to take amazing photos of the unique formations in the Park.

The nearest major airports to Arches are Salt Lake City International or Harry Reid International in Las Vegas, both are a 4 hour drive away. Alternatively, consider taking a Utah National Parks road trip .

The summers are hot and temperatures can reach 100 degrees F. Plus there is no shade along the trail.

In winter, the crowds are gone, but there could be snow or ice on the trail making it more difficult to navigate. However, the contrast of white snow against the red rock arch is very pretty.

Jamie says, “There is one small campground at Arches National Park. About 5 miles from Arches in the small town of Moab there are a variety of hotels, vacation rentals, and RV parks .”

best us beaches on east coast with most beautiful sun sets

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

By Samantha from New England Wanderlust

One of the best places in the United States to watch a sunset on the east coast is Cape Cod, Massachusetts, a peninsula along the Atlantic ocean with over 500 miles of stunning coastline. With 15 lovely towns to explore, and New England charm at every turn, this is one of the top beach holiday destinations in the Northeast.

One of the best and most famous sunset locations in the area is at Race Point Beach, which is located in Provincetown at the very tip of the peninsula. This beach offers a panorama view of the sunset along the water, and you can often see seals swimming along the shoreline.

While Race Point is one of the most beautiful sunset spots on Cape Cod, anywhere along the Cape Cod Bay side of the area is truly spectacular to watch the sun go down. Some of the other amazing sun set spots are Herring Cove Beach, Skaket Beach, Rock Harbor Beach and Breakwater Beach.

Race Point is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, which requires a parking fee during the day. But if you arrive after 4:30pm for the sunset, it’s free!

The parking area here is large, and even during peak times, it never fills up during sunset, making it an easy one to visit.

When you’re not chasing sunsets, you’ll want to be sure to visit some of the best towns on Cape Cod. Chatham is known for being one of the most picturesque in the area, and here, you’ll find an awesome Main Street with shops and restaurants, more beautiful beaches and a lighthouse to explore.

And of course, you’ll want to visit the rest of the beaches during your trip! Cape Cod is known for having some of the most beautiful beaches in the country, so be sure to check out Coast Guard Beach, Nauset Beach and Cahoon Hollow beach.

Boston Logan International Airport is the best way to get to Cape Cod. From the airport, you’ll want to rent a car, and drive about 1.5 hours to the Cape. Having a car to get to all the beaches and top attractions is a must in this area.

Peak season on Cape Cod is the summer, and that’s also the  best time  to visit. July and August offer the best weather for swimming, and all the restaurants and shops will be open for the season.

This is also the most crowded time to visit, so if you’re looking to avoid some of the crowds and still have good weather, you should visit during shoulder season in June or September.

Samantha says, “If you’re looking for a bit of luxury during your stay, the Chatham Bars Inn can’t be beat. They have their own private beach with cabanas, restaurants and a spa on-site, and a perfect location that’s walkable to Main Street.”

By Kristin from Global Travel Escapades

San Diego is another destination in the USA that always makes for a lovely vacation no matter what time of the year. This west coast Southern California city has a wide array of activities and sights that are perfect for a much-needed getaway. And what makes San Diego especially great for a holiday is its amazing sunsets.

A fantastic spot to watch the sunset is at Del Mar beach, around 15th street. Although the area near Seagrove Park is often crowded, if you park on the side streets and make your way to the end of one of the cul de sacs, you’ll hardly find anyone there. Then, you will can catch an intimate viewing of the sunset over the water.

There are plenty of other activities to do in the area. For example, surfing is always a local favorite as the area has surf breaks that are suitable for every level of surfer. Plus, you’ll find a good amount of rental shops in the area that offer surfboards for quite affordable prices.

If surfing doesn’t appeal to you, a relaxing beach day with reading a book or sunbathing is never a bad idea.

Alternatively, you can make your way to the Carlsbad area to explore the quaint towns filled with funky shops. If you visit during the spring, you can visit Carlsbad Ranch and absorb the beauty of the millions of flowers that blossom every year!

Visitors who are ready to make their way to San Diego can fly into San Diego International Airport. Del Mar is a short 25-minute drive away.

San Diego has beautiful warm weather all year round making it an ideal vacation destination anytime of the year.

Kristin says, “Consider staying at Paradise Point Resort and Spa . It’s a 4-star resort located right next to Mission Bay, so you’ll also be able to enjoy a gorgeous sunset viewing right from your room!”

best places on east coast of america at dusk to watch the sun going down

Outer Banks, North Carolina

By Samantha from Roam NC

A location that is not often spoken about when it comes to a beach vacation on the east coast of the USA is the stunning Outer Banks in North Carolina.

The Outer Banks is home to a multitude of scenic beaches where you can easily watch the sun go down. However, Jockey’s Ridge, a State Park, is a fan favorite for this activity.

Here you will often find people hiking trails, picnicking, and even sand boarding along the dunes. It offers a friendly atmosphere and visiting is one of the best free things to do in the Outer Bank .

The State Park is surrounded by traditional seaside towns, including Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk, both of which provide endless views to soak up the evening sun.

During the day, you can occupy yourself with nearby beaches and piers and spend time on the beach searching for shells.

If you love traveling, learn more about the history of flying at the Wright Brothers Memorial, which is just a short drive from Jockey’s Ridge. This is where they flew the first flight.

When traveling around North Carolina, renting a car is a must and will allow you to easily travel from place to place so you can experience everything there is to offer.

When considering what time of year to visit, there is no denying that The Outer Banks thrives in the summertime. This is when you will find the most sunny weather and when most of the attractions are open.

That being said, the weather in the Outer Banks can be fickle. Towns often will experience light rainfall even during the warmer months, so remember to bring a light raincoat, just in case.

Samantha says, “The majority of the hotels in the Outer Banks are delightful seaside accommodations. One of the best is the Townhouse Place Marriott , conveniently placed, and they even allow dogs.”

best places in usa to watch most beautiful sunsets

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

By Jessica from Past Lane Travels

Most people don’t think of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania when thinking about a vacations in the USA to watch the sun set. However, there is one iconic spot that draws visitors and locals alike to watch that big yellow ball dip below the horizon.

Located in south central Pennsylvania, the small town of Gettysburg became famous when armies from the North and South fought in the fields and farms around the town for three days in July of 1863.

The battlefield is peaceful and serene now with more than 6,000 acres of rolling hills, fields and forests preserved to commemorate the battle.

The best place to watch the sunset is Little Round Top, a small rise that stands 650 feet above sea level. There is even a small stone castle that can be climbed for an even better view of the vast farmland and mountains in the distance.

Parking has always been a problem in the summer months and the National Park Service is currently doing renovations to expand available space. While it is being completed, leave lots of time to find parking.

There are plenty of other things to do in Gettysburg as well, including double-decker bus tours of the battlefield and downtown walking tours that describe the effect of the battle on the civilians in the town.

Special events include the annual Civil War reenactment in July and Remembrance Day weekend in November.

Gettysburg is about an hour away from Harrisburg International Airport, and 90 minutes from Baltimore Washington International Airport and Dulles. Public transportation is very limited. Even Uber rides are hard to come by so a renting a car is necessary for this rural area.

The best time to visit Gettysburg depends on what you want to see and do. The summer months are the most crowded, but there are also more special events.

The winter months are cold and possibly snowy, but crowds are thinner. Spring and Fall are both lovely months in Pennsylvania, but the weather is unpredictable.

Jessica says, “Gettysburg has lots of campgrounds that offer cabins and cottages, and dozens of Bed and Breakfasts that are located in buildings that served as hospitals during the Battle of Gettysburg.

You can also get a hotel room within walking distance of museums, restaurants and shops at the historic Gettysburg Hotel and Federal Pointe Inn , among others.”

best east coast trip to see prettiest US sun sets

Naples, Florida

By Lori from Travlinmad.com

Naples, Florida is known for its beautiful beaches and the kind of blazing sunsets that make southwest Florida such a popular year round tourist destination in the United States.

Whether you’re here for a weekend getaway or a longer vacation, watching the sunset is a daily ritual for every tourist and most locals.

In Naples, it’s a tradition that’s celebrated with umbrella cocktails, fire dancers, and a hearty round of applause at the end.

Naples has many vantage points and beaches on the Gulf of Mexico to watch the sunset, but there is no better place to watch the sun disappear under the horizon than at the Naples Pier.

The 12 feet wide Naples Pier extends 1100 feet out into the Gulf. The weather gods have not been kind to the structure over the years but it continues to stand despite the occasional hurricane.

Sadly, Hurricane Ian in 2022 was especially destructive and restoration continues. However, you can still visit the Pier to watch the fiery sunset for which Naples is known.

The downtown area of Naples is one of the best places for tourists to stay, so the Pier can get a bit crowded in the early afternoon. It’s best to get there an hour before the official sunset time to find your perfect spot.

If you’re driving, there is a parking lot on 3rd Street South and just a 5 minute walk with your blanket or beach chairs.

Naples’ prime location on the Gulf makes it perfect for boat tours, shelling, waterside dining, and tiki bar strolls. There’s even a boat tour ON a floating tiki bar!

Many visitors to Naples fly into Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW). Several major airlines fly into Southwest Florida International, and then, it’s only a 30 minute drive to downtown Naples.

Though the sunsets are fiery all year long, your odds of seeing the legendary Green Flash are better earlier in the year, making Naples one of the  best places to visit the US for spring break  or in the summer.

Lori says, “The luxury Inn on Fifth is in the heart of downtown, while the moderate Inn at Pelican Bay is closer to Mercato.”

best west coast destination to watch the prettiest sunset in america

Orcas Island, Washington

By Marisa from Postcards To Seattle

When you’re looking for one of the best places to enjoy a pretty sunset in the U.S., you can’t beat Orcas Island in Washington. This beautiful, quiet island is located north of Seattle in the San Juan Islands.

You can watch the sunset from anywhere on Orcas Island, but the top of Mount Constitution is the best place. You’ll be able to see the other San Juan Islands and even Canada on a clear evening. This is about a 30-minute drive from Eastsound, the main town on the island.

You’ll want to arrive early at Mount Constitution as the parking lot can fill up quickly.

There are many fun  things to do on Orcas Island . While in town, you can go wine tasting at Doe Bay Wine Company and then stroll around the local artisan shops.

Mijitas Mexican Kitchen and Hogstone’s Wood Oven are great places to get a meal when you’re ready to fuel up.

The closest airport to fly into is Paine Field in Everett but it is limited in its number of flights. It is better to rent a car and drive 1.5 hours from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Once you reach Anacortes, you’ll take a short ferry to reach Orcas. You can also look into taking a seaplane but you will want a car to explore Orcas Island.

Summer is the best time to visit weather-wise, as it tends to be dry and in the 70s or 80s F, but it is also the most popular time. Late spring or early fall can be ideal times to explore the island with fewer people and cheaper accommodation.

Marissa says, “Camping is a popular activity in the summer at places like Moran State Park, for which you’ll need a reservation in advance. You can also treat yourself and stay at the luxurious Rosario Resort & Spa .”

best cities in usa to watch sunsets

Nashville, Tennessee

By Brittany from Travel By Brit

Nashville, Tennessee, is known for its country music history and southern culture. However, it is also one of the best American cities to watch the sunset.

Nicknamed just the “Pedestrian Bridge”, the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge is for foot traffic only and connects Downtown Nashville and Broadway Street to Nissan Stadium, where the Tennessee Titans play.

There are plenty of benches and seating areas on the bridge, so if you arrive early, you can snag one for yourself to watch the sun sink over the gorgeous skyline.

Parking around the bridge (and on Broadway Street) can be chaotic and often expensive so walk, or take a taxi or ride share.”

While in Nashville, don’t miss the chance to check out some of the  best bars in Nashville on Broadway Street , like the Wildhorse Saloon and Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge.

You should also visit the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum to learn more about the city’s country music history. Alternatively, go on a mural tour to see the city’s vibrant and famous murals.

To get to Nashville, fly into the Nashville International Airport (BNA), which is only a short eight-mile drive to Downtown Nashville.

If you are staying in Downtown Nashville, you may not need a car, but if you want to enjoy other spots in Nashville that aren’t within walking distance, like the 12 South neighborhood, a rental car is the best choice.

It’s wise to visit Nashville in the spring or fall for the best weather — the summers are hot and humid, and the city is filled with tourists. In the winter, the weather is unpredictable, so you could be stuck in a snow and ice storm.

Brittany says, “It’s wise to stay at a hotel near Broadway Street, like the Cambria Hotel Nashville or Moxy Nashville Downtown , so you can walk to the Pedestrian Bridge from your hotel.”

best national parks in america to watch prettiest sun sets

Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

By Erin from Super Simple Salty Life

Grand Teton National Park  is part of the Rocky Mountain range in northwestern Wyoming. This section of the Rockies is considered to be newer than other mountain ranges, giving the jagged peaks their trademark shape and forming the perfect backdrop for some stunning sunsets. It is one of the best national parks in the US to vacation for beautiful sun sets.

The most popular spot for photographers and sunset-lovers alike inside Teton National Park is at Oxbow Bend. People come early to set up chairs and tripods to take gorgeous photos of the sun setting behind the huge rocky peaks, reflected in the still water below. Some of the most iconic photos of the Tetons were taken in this location.

The Tetons are home to an abundant amount of wildlife such as bison, mule deer, elk, bears, and moose. Visitors that are out during the sunset hours will most likely also catch a glimpse of many of these large animals. Remember to keep your distance and just enjoy viewing them from afar.

Arrive at least an hour before sunset to get a great spot. Visitors in the summer will want to bring bug spray, and maybe a light jacket for after the sun goes down.

Besides the incredible hiking and mountain-climbing options inside the National Park, the nearby town of Jackson at the southern end of Jackson Hole is also a great place to check out.

Jackson is a perfect location to stay in because it is so close to the park. Visitors to the town can shop at boutique and locally-owned stores, grab a bite to eat, and replenish supplies and groceries.

The closest international airports are in Denver or Salt Lake City. However, there is even a small airport inside the National Park.

With the elevation, the Tetons can get chilly and icy in the winter and a lot of the hikes are closed.

The best time to visit this area is in the late spring through fall, keeping in mind that the summer months can become crowded. But with over 200 miles of hiking trails available, travelers should be able to find a quiet spot to explore.

Erin says, “The Wyoming Inn is a perfect place to stay in town. This luxury lodge is just minutes from downtown Jackson, and has a large lobby fireplace, spacious rooms, and an on-site restaurant.”

best beach destination on west coast of America for a gorgeous sun set

Malibu, California

By Catrina from 24 Hours Layover

The picturesque beach town of Malibu in California, 30 miles west of Downtown Los Angeles is known for its celebrity homes, perfect surf and stunning beaches that offer incredible views of the Pacific Ocean.

The best place in Malibu to watch the sunset is at El Matador State Beach. The beach features three small secluded coves that are ideal for sunset viewing, and the beach’s rugged cliffs and large rock formations provide a stunning backdrop – perfect for getting photos.

Another best photo spot in Malibu  to catch the sunset is the Malibu Pier which offers amazing unobstructed views of the Pacific Ocean.

Bring a jacket as the ocean breeze can make it chilly, especially during the winter months. Additionally, it’s best to arrive early as the best spots can get crowded, especially on weekends and during peak tourist season.

While in Malibu, visitors can take a scenic drive on the Pacific Coast Highway, which offers breathtaking ocean views and a chance to see the luxurious homes of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

The Getty Villa is another must-visit attraction, featuring an impressive collection of ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture.

The closest international airport to Malibu is Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), approximately 30 miles away. It is about an hour’s drive to El Matador State Beach.

Alternatively, you can get a local bus from Santa Monica to Trancas Canyon and then walk to El Matador from there.

The best time to visit Malibu is from March to May or from September to November when the weather is mild and the crowds are smaller. The summer months can get quite hot and humid.

Catrina says, “For accommodation, Malibu has several options, ranging from luxurious hotels and resorts to budget-friendly motels and vacation rentals. The Malibu Beach Inn is a top-rated hotel that offers stunning ocean views and luxurious amenities.

Camping is also available at the nearby Leo Carrillo State Park for visitors who want to experience the great outdoors.”

best us destinations to view sun going down

White Sands National Park, New Mexico

By Alanna from Periodic Adventures

White Sands National Park is located just an hour from Las Cruces, New Mexico and is a spectacular US holiday destination to view the sunset. The Park is very small with only one 8-mile-long road that is bordered by miles of sand dunes.

To watch the sunset at White Sands National Park , it’s best to get there a bit early then drive towards the back of the park for fewer crowds. You’ll want to get out of your vehicle, climb a sand dune and sit at the top for the best views.

Other things to do at White Sands National Park include renting or bringing a sled to slide down the dunes, taking a ranger led nature walk, or exploring the Visitor Center to learn more about the ecosystems.

To get there, fly into Las Cruces (LRU), rent a car, and drive northeast on US-70E until you reach the Park entrance, which is right off the highway.

White Sands National Park is open year round, but can occasionally close due to weather or nearby missile testing. The best time to visit is winter for fewer crowds, although it can get very cold so bring proper winter attire.

Alanna says, “The nearest major town is Alamogordo, so if you need a place to stay overnight, try White Sands Motel or Holiday Inn Express in town.”

best places for most beautiful sunsets in united states

Big Island, Hawaii

By Jina from By Jina Lee

Witness one of the most beautiful sunsets in the world at the summit of Mauna Kea, located on the Big Island in Hawaii. At more than 13,000 feet above sea level, you’ll have an unobstructed view of the horizon as you watch the sunset dip below a sea of clouds.

Getting to Mauna Kea requires a bit of planning. On your way to the summit, there’s a mandatory stop at Mauna Kea Visitor Center where you’ll spend at least 30 minutes acclimating to the altitude.

There are also attendants who will check to make sure you have a 4WD vehicle and that your tires are cool enough to make the drive up to the summit.

If you choose not to rent a 4WD car for your Big Island road trip, you can rent a car for the day or pay for a sunset tour.

From the visitor center, it takes about 30 minutes of very careful driving to get to the summit area. Once you arrive at the parking lot at the top, there are plenty of places from where you can watch the sunset.

The summit is the only place on the island where you’ll need to pack warmly as the average temperature is 32F.

There aren’t that many higher vantage points at the top of the summit so you’ll want to arrive at least 30-45 minutes before sunset to get a front-row seat and an uninterrupted view.

Visiting Mauna Kea and Volcanoes National Park on the same day provides a unique opportunity to experience two of Hawaii’s most breathtaking natural wonders – the highest point in the State and the active Kilauea volcano.

Volcanoes National Park is one of the main highlights of the Big Island so you’ll want to get to the Park before 10:00 AM to secure a parking spot, especially if you’re interested in hiking the popular Kilauea Iki Trail down to the crater.

It’s possible to visit Mauna Kea upon arrival, as it’s about 2-3 hours from both Kona and Hilo International Airport.

The weather on the Big Island is warm and pleasant all year round.

Jina says, “If you decide to plan for a day trip to Volcanoes National Park before heading to Mauna Kea for the sunset, you’ll want to stay in Volcano Village or Hilo so you’ll be close enough to the park to get an early start in the morning.”

best cities to watch the best sun sets in usa

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

By Melissa from Parenthood And Passports

While many places in the United States with beautiful sunsets are often remote and far from urban areas, in Oklahoma City, you don’t have to venture away from the city to experience a wide range of colorful skies as the sun sets. The sky in Oklahoma’s capital often takes on hues of deep orange, pink, purple, and red, creating a breathtaking display of colors.

The city’s relatively flat terrain also offers unobstructed views of the horizon, allowing for a clear view of the setting sun.

While the sunset can be breathtaking for those just driving down the highway, for a serene escape, head to Lake Hefner on the city’s northwest side, to enjoy the evening as the sun ducks behind the lake’s iconic lighthouse.

Or relax in the boathouse district, one of the most popular places to visit in OKC with kids , to see the sky behind downtown Oklahoma City turn shades of orange and pink.

Head to the boathouse district to test your skills at white water rafting, kayaking, surfing, zip-lining, or dare to try the tallest ropes course of its kind in the world!

Alternatively, go to Bricktown – a must-visit area of OKC. Take a boat ride on the man-made canal or stroll along the water’s edge and enjoy the lively atmosphere in the district which is filled with restaurants, shopping and entertainment venues. Bricktown is an ideal area to base yourself when visiting Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma City is easy to get to, thanks to Will Rogers World Airport, located just 15 minutes outside of the downtown area, and is a fun area to explore on a weekend trip. So, while you may come for the epic sunsets, you’ll be amazed at how much there is to do in this underrated city in the Central Plains.

It’s worth noting that Oklahoma is known for its unpredictable weather. So, for your best chance at seeing a fiery red sunset, plan your trip in late summer or early fall, when the temperatures are usually warm and the skies are often clear. Additionally, the sun angle during this time of year is also lower, which can create a more dramatic and colorful sunset.

Melissa says, “Book a stay at the trendy Aloft Hotel which has a rooftop pool, another great place to catch a sunset.”

best vacations in united states to watch prettiest sun sets

Cape Charles, Virginia

By Erin from Go Hike Virginia

You won’t find a weathered boardwalk or surfing-caliber waves in Cape Charles, Virginia. However, you will find kid-friendly beaches, a walkable historic district and vibrant sunsets over the Chesapeake Bay.

Located on the southern tip of the peninsula that is Virginia’s Eastern Shore, Cape Charles draws in sun-seekers in summer with its chill vibes, small town appeal, and quaint locally-owned boutiques and gift shops.

As the sun prepares to set, there is no bad spot to savor the fiery sunsets of west-facing Cape Charles.

At Cape Charles Beach, snap a selfie with the colorful LOVE sign as you wait for the sun to drop below the horizon.

At Kiptopeke State Park, soak in the sun, then kayak out to a convoy of nine crumbling ghost ships that date to World War II. At  Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve , an easy hike on the Beach Trail leads to a gorgeous white sand beach that’s strewn with beautiful driftwood.

When evening comes, The Shanty wows with delicious seafood dishes and hush puppies served with honey butter at the Cape Charles Town Harbor. After dinner, stroll Mason Avenue to Brown Dog Ice Cream for a scoop of Snickerdoodle or Cherry Chocolate Chip.

Cape Charles is less than one hour by car from Norfolk International Airport.

Summer is a popular time to visit Cape Charles, particularly for families and beach-goers. Note that some shops close up in the off-season (winter), so keep this in mind before making the drive. However, the sunsets are always in-season, and they are one-of-a-kind.

Erin says, “A popular nearby stay is the historic Northampton Hotel , which is just one block from the beach.

For those who prefer a campground, look to Sun Outdoors Cape Charles, which has RV sites, cabins, cottages, glamping tents and tent sites. The campground also has five swimming pools, mini golf, fishing piers and its own sandy beach. Located on the Chesapeake Bay, sunset views are all around you.”

best us destinations to see dusk and most beautiful sunsets

Dead Horse Point State Park, Utah

By Stephanie from History Fangirl

Dead Horse Point State Park lies just outside of Moab, Utah, near Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park. However, because it’s a state park sitting adjacent to some of the country’s most prized national parks, it often gets overlooked by travelers.

This is a shame since it’s one of the most spectacular places to watch a sunset in the entire United States. In addition, the sunset view is one that is overlooking Canyonlands National Park, so it’s the perfect extension of a visit to Canyonlands.

The Park has a highly rated hike, but you need to complete the loop and head to the Visitor’s Center well before sunset to grab the best spot.

Alternatively, you can simply arrive at the park thirty minutes before sunset and park in the Visitor’s Center parking lot.

The viewpoint from behind the Visitor’s Center offers the best vantage point. Note that sunset hits a bit earlier than the time Google states due to the way the ridges of Canyonlands block the light.

Once you’ve had your fill of Moab’s nature and parks, you should spend some time walking around downtown checking out the local murals before enjoying dinner and drinks at Moab Brewery.

Most people will come to Moab as part of a larger  Utah national parks  road trip.

If you want to fly commercial, you will need to fly into Salt Lake City and rent a car to drive the nearly two-hundred and fifty miles to Moab. Those flying privately can land at Canyonlands Field Airport (CNY).

Moab is great year-round, but it can get quite crowded in the summer. You can visit in winter, but you might not enjoy walking back to your car in the dark on snowy or icy days.

The perfect time to visit Moab and Dead Horse Point State Park is in the shoulder season months of April, May, September, and October.

Stephanie says, “ The Virginian Inn provides basic accommodations for those on a budget, while those looking to splurge can check into the Hoodoo Moab .”

best vacations to watch the best sunsets in america

Death Valley National Park, California

By Catherine from Nomadicated

Located in Eastern California and occupying an area of 5,270 square miles, Death Valley is one of the largest national parks in the United States. It’s a land of extremes, with scorching heat, barren deserts, salt flats, rugged mountains, and amazing sunsets.

When it comes to watching the sunset, two locations in Death Valley are particularly stunning. The first is Zabriskie Point, famous for its panoramic views of the badlands and the surrounding mountains. After a short hike, watching the sunset from Zabriskie Point is a surreal experience, as the light paints the surrounding landscape with warm, golden hues.

The second spot is the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, a field of towering sand dunes that are constantly shifting and changing. As the sun sets, the sand glows with an orange-red hue as the angle of the shadows becomes evermore dramatic.

It may take some effort to climb the sand dunes, but traversing a few layers of dunes rewards you with an untouched view free from footprints and any evidence of disturbance.

Aside from these points of interest, there are plenty of other things to do in Death Valley. Surprisingly, you can take a dip in a desert waterfall, hike through the colorful canyons of Artists’ Palette, or visit the massive Ubehebe Crater.

To reach Death Valley, the closest airport is Las Vegas’s Harry Reid International airport. There is no public transportation to or within the park, so you will need to rent a car and  embark on your own Vegas road trip . Note that driving times can be lengthy due to the Park’s size.

The best time to visit Death Valley is during the winter months when the temperatures are mild. Summer temperatures can reach over 110 degrees Fahrenheit, making outdoor activities uncomfortable, if not dangerous.

Catherine says, “Camping in the National Park is your best option to minimize driving time. There are nine campgrounds to choose from, ranging from primitive to more developed sites.

Book your campground ahead of time! The Park is massive, and if one campground is full, you’ll have to drive a long way to find another.”

best us beaches to observe prettiest sun set in usa

Sand Point Beach, Michigan

By Rebecca from Veggies Abroad

When you find yourself in Michigan’s gorgeous Upper Peninsula, there is no better place to catch the sunset than Sand Point Beach. The beach is ideally located — just four miles from the charming town of Munising and at the start of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. It’s so lovely that the Weather Channel named it one of the “Top Five Summer Beaches in America .”

During the day, this is a popular beach as the waters are shallow, making it a perfect swimming location. When night falls, the crowds leave, and the unobstructed views over Lake Superior provide the best opportunity to catch a sky full of brilliant orange and pink.

If you’re visiting in the spring, fall, or winter, watch the weather and pack layers.

While visiting the area, you can’t miss going for a  hike in the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore  or jumping in a boat or kayak and viewing the park’s iconic cliffs from the water. Multiple local tour companies run a range of tours from May to October.

The easiest way to reach the area is to drive, but if you’re flying, the closest airport is Sawyer International Airport in Marquette, about an hour away. You will need to rent a car as the area is rural (expect dirt roads and one-lane highways).

The spring and fall can average in the 40s and 50s (snowfall can happen in October), and expect a lot of snow in the winter. For the best weather, visit between June – August.

Rebecca says, “It’s best to base yourself in Munising to explore the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and hang out on Sandpoint Beach. There are multiple hotels and campsites — some recommendations include The Roam Inn and The Sunset Motel on the Bay. If you’re visiting in the summer, make your reservations early, as hotels and campsites sell out fast!”

The best places in America to watch some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world include exciting cities, charming towns, spectacular sandy beaches and soaring mountains. Choosing where to go will be difficult but regardless of your ultimate destination on your US vacation, you will find some of the prettiest sun sets in the world.

I’m with Sbu, african sunsets are spectacular. Try Maputo, Dar es Salaam, Luanda, Cape Town, Meroe at Sudan and especially an african savanna. You mention Glasgow - heading south to Gourock the sunset over the Clyde can be really stunning.

30 African Sunsets to See Before You Die, According to Travel Bloggers

Posted on Last updated: September 6, 2021

While I was traveling and safari-ing through the continent, I was constantly completely blown away by the African sunsets everywhere I went. Whether over the ocean, through a forest, behind wild animals on a sunset safari, or over a desert, somehow the sunsets in Africa were impressive each and every day more than the last.

There is just something about African sunsets that leave you speechless. I honestly just laughed to myself each evening when the sky would twist and turn into incredible colors over another beautiful national park, city, or desert.

There are many western-facing coasts in Africa that create fantastic seaside sunsets, but the direction is only a small part of what makes African sunsets unique. The settings, the remote nature, the old villages, the bustling cities, and the bodies of water come together to make the best sunsets in Africa, the best sunsets in the world.

Pursuing my obsession with African sunsets, I found that it seems I am not the only one who thinks this way! I asked dozens of other bloggers to contribute their top African sunsets to see before you die, and added them to this lovely list of most mind-blowing sunsets of my travels through Africa.

I hope to see all of these one day! But for now, enjoy these African sunset pictures and descriptions as told by myself and many different travel bloggers who have also fallen in love with this magical continent. They are surely some of the most beautiful sunsets in the world!

Note: These are listed in alphabetical order according to country, not in any specific order of sunset awesomeness 😛

African sunsets to see before you die, as told by travel bloggers. Sunset safaris, desert sunsets, ocean sunsets, and sunsets with animals, canyons, rivers, and more!

African Sunsets in Botswana

Okavango delta.

On our overnight Okavango Delta safari, we glided through the reeds on calm water in mokoro boats for an hour to get to our decked-out campsite. The water was calm, and we moved slowly, not shifting too much in fear we would tip the long and thin boat right over. When we went out on our evening game walk, we didn’t get too far before we heard a crack of thunder in the distance.

Worried about our cameras, we shielded them under layers of clothing when massive drops started to fall. After taking shelter under some trees as the storm passed, we climbed back into the mokoro boats. We hoped to make it back to our camp before the storm struck again!

However, the storm had passed and had left in its wake some twisting and turning cloud formations. It happend to be right at sunset when we passed a clearing in the delta, revealing to us the most perfect sunset reflection I could have conjured up in my windest dreams. It was one of the most remarkable sunsets of my life!

Chobe National Park

We spent  one week in Botswana  at the end of our three-month journey across Southern Africa, and this sunset pic was taken at the end of our last day in the country, in Chobe National Park. After having spent several weeks travelling around Namibia and South Africa, places known for their lack of water, Botswana was a welcome change in terms of landscapes – the northern part of the country was much greener than anywhere we’d been in Africa previously, and there were lots of rivers and lagoons.

In Chobe, we had the chance to go on a river safari, where we saw loads of hippos, water buffaloes and entire herds of ‘swimming’ elephants from our boat. At the end of our safari, we saw this spectacular sunset with a G&T in hand – I love this picture so much, because it reminds me of a wonderful day, the last of a wonderful journey!

Danakil Depression

After an entire day of driving through the intense heat and surreal landscapes of the Danakil Depression in Northern Ethiopia, we finally reached our destination: the basecamp of Erta Ale volcano, whose crater holds one of only five lava lakes in the world. The area around the volcano is considered to be the hottest inhabited place on earth and temperatures often reach more than 50°C. Therefore, the three hour hike from the basecamp up to the crater can only be started after sunset, when the temperatures start falling a bit.

Since we would spend the night in the open near the crater, our local guides used camels to carry supplies and thin mattresses up the mountain. I took this photo at the basecamp just before the camels were loaded with the supplies and we were ready to embark on our epic journey up the volcano.

African Sunsets in Kenya

Lamu island.

Africa is known for its magical sunsets, and one place you should put on your bucket list is Lamu Island in northern Kenya. Lamu is a hidden gem since it’s a little bit off the typical tourist trail, but absolutely stunning. I stayed in the calm and unpopulated south of the island in the beautiful resort Kizingo, where I had the wide beaches all for myself. Here, I had the chance to watch the sunset in complete tranquility every day.

There are also some sand dunes where you can hike up to, giving you a fantastic panorama of the island. But there’s more than beaches on Lamu Island – visit Lamu Town, a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the oldest (and probably busiest) towns in the world! You can also take a boat ride to look for dolphins or go snorkeling in the clear ocean. Lamu Island is a magical place, try to visit before the crowds discover it!

Tsavo East National Park

When it comes to awesome African sunsets, watching the sun go down over the savannah in Kenya has to feature on your bucket list. The Tsavo East National Park is a popular destination for safaris, and was also home to one of the best sunsets I have ever seen. I was there for a safari and after a long day driving around the savannah we returned to Swara Osteria Camp, our camp just outside the boundaries of the Tsavo East National Park.

Here we had the incredible opportunity to go for a walk in the savannah accompanied by the Maasai that work at the camp. The sun started going down while we were walking, with the Maasai pointing out animal trails or bird nests along the way. Watching the sky turn red while the sun was going down and the Maasai were telling us stories about their life truly was the perfect ending to our safari adventure. Find out more about the Tsavo East National Park  here .

African Sunsets in Lesotho

Malealea is a hub of adventures in Lesotho’s West Coast. When I was there, we had to traipse through canyons in the rain to find bushmen paintings, tiny villages, and amazing views. Many horse riding or hiking tours were cancelled due to the weather, but it ended up clearing just in time for the sun to go down.

After changing out of my rain-soaked clothes and walking out to the back of our little lodge, I was awestruck to see pink clouds hovering over pointed mountains. I could see mountains that were previously lost in a blanket of fog, and was taken aback by the incredible view I had not known was there.

Lesotho, a tiny southern African ‘kingdom in the clouds ” is one of the most surprisingly scenic places I have ever has the pleasure of visiting. Much of the country is very highly elevated and mountainous, and the people are warm and rich with culture.

Drakensburg Mountains

A sunset in the Drakensburg mountains would be spectacular simply because the area is as stunning as they come. Home to some of the most famous hikes in the world and even the second tallest waterfall in the world, the Drakensburg Ranges are second to non when it comes to jaw-dropping (literally) views. I did the hike to Tugela Falls and it was one of (if not the) best hikes of my life!

These mountains are located on the border between Lesotho and South Africa – technically more on the South African side. There are a few different lodges, campsites, and backpackers that will organize these hikes for you (which are MUCH smarter to do guided – due to inclement weather and some unmarked trails) like Amphitheatre Backpackers in South Africa. Highly Recommend!

African Sunsets in Morocco

Sahara Desert

A sunset in the Sahara Desert, Morocco… not your usual experience!

Sitting on your camel, on the way to the nomad camp, the silence is intense and your mind is free from distraction in order to focus on the stunning sights, everywhere around you.

It feels like the sky is cloud-free so as not to compete with the vibrant colours of the desert.

As the sun lowers and lowers, the sand turns orange and sometimes almost red; all the shadows elongate and accentuate the beautiful shapes of the dunes with soft yet sharp lines.

Despite the back pain one begin in a camel, you wish this moment of beauty never ends 🙂

fish river canyon sunset best sunsets in africa

Fish River Canyon

Honestly though, this was one of the top five sunsets of my whole life. Fish River Canyon is relatively off the radar for many travelers, but is actually the second largest Canyon in the world behind the grand canyon! Fish River Canyon is located in the southern part of the massive and ancient Namib Desert, and it’s estimated that water started carving this bad boy out over 50 million years ago. I’ll just give that information a moment to sink in…

Anyway, we didn’t spend as long as I would have liked on my African overland tour (read more here),  but we walked a little trail along the eastern rim of the canyon. We ended at a lookout point facing due went just in time for a head-on view of a spectacular sunset behind a U-shaped turn of a glistening river far below. As I am sure you can tell from the photo, it was simply… simply ……. Gah, nevermind, I cannot find an actual word to describe this one.

orange river sunset south africa namibia

Orange River

Orange River creates the border between Namibia and it’s southern neighbor, South Africa. Technically, for optimal sunset viewage, you’re going to want to be on the South Africa side of the river. But I digress; if you catch the river at the right bend angle it could be great on either side!

Orange River in general, with its amazing geological formations, intricate volcanic rock, sparse river reeds, and flowing green water, is a spectacle in itself. This area is popular for river rafting and has both gentle and more intense rapids. Some rafting trips here ru for multiple days and allow you to camp on the side of the river each evening, and most likely catch an amazing desert sunset each night next to your river oasis. Take me back!

africa camping sunset sossus desert namibia

Sossus Desert

The Sossus area I’m speaking about is part of the larger Namib Desert, and near (but not within) the Namib-Nakluft National Park of Namibia. This area is one of the most magical places my mind returns to over and over again.

The ancient desert has cloudy, dry, white, powdery soil, and is scarreted with tifts of desert plants. Wild animals meander by in the distance from watering hole to watering hole, with a backdrop of blue and purple hued mountains in the distance.

The stars here are also the brightest I have ever seen, and I’ll never forget when a wild giraffe walked by our campsite right at sunset. It’s just a dream here! Read more and see photos and itinerary from my Namibia road trip here.

african sunsets over sand dunes in namibia sossusvlei namib desert

Sossusvlei Sand Dunes

Sossusvlei and deadvlei are within the incredible Namib-Nakluft National Park. This park is all about red, burnt iron colored sand dunes rolling for miles and miles. When the sun is low on the horizon, the angles and contrasts from the twists and turns of these dunes are extra defined, making the scene like something out of a postcard!

will travel for sunsets

Skeleton Coast + Swakopmund

The Skeleton coast is one of the most unique places in the world in that massive, swirling, sand dunes meet the unforgiving Atlantic Ocean. Some of the most famous and remote surf breaks in the world are on this coast, and it could not be more perfect that the coast faces west here for an rugged landscpae with a sunset over the sea.

Swakopmund is a sandy city on the coast, and of course also has picture perfect sunset views. Catch it on the Swakopmund pier for a perfectly framed golden hour, or really any or the beaches and bays nearby!

best african sunsets spitzkoppe sunset namibia

Spitzkoppe is yet another incredible National Park in Namibia, characterized by massive, smooth, boulder-like formations surrounded by small shoots of green foliage. These bounders are amazing to climb and explore, and have breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

Spitzkoppe is somewe=here you go to really get off the grid, in that there’s no cell service and minimal amenities on the campground. But it can’t be left out on a Namibia road trip because it’s one of the best views in the country!

If you get to the right spot, a sunset at Spitzkoppe can be perfectly framed by rocks, or can illuminate the entire surrounding desert. We got a pretty perfect on when we were there, in true African sunset fashion, and I can’t wait to go back.

Namibia Road Trip africa sunset

Etosha National Park

Etosha is a massive game park in the north of the country. I didn’t even expect sunsets there to be as spectacular as we had already seen, but African sunsets proved me wrong yet again. We saw a sunset over a busy watering hole one night, and watched another amazing one from the top of a tower at our resort/campsite, Okaukuejo Resort ,  the next. It’s like that’s the only reason the tower was there – for amazing sunrise and sunset views!

senegal sunsets

Sunsets in Senegal

Over 20 years ago, I lost my heart in Africa. I have been to many African destinations and Senegal is one of my favourites. I never felt more in Africa as I did here.

One of the most impressive things I saw abroad was the arrival of the fisherman in Mbour. Every day all the woman gather on the beach to welcome their husbands.

Besides visiting Mbour, we went sea fishing (you need a strong stomach as the sea is very rough) and we went on a guided tour with a buggy. The guide showed us around and it felt like we were the only tourists in Senegal.

Everyone knows Senegal because the Rally Paris-Dakar ended here in former days. The Lac Rose, the finish line of the race, is a stunning pink lake. The salt concentration is extremely high so you can float on the water.

If you like luxury hotels and excellent food, I can highly recommend Le Lamantin Beach in Saly. On top of that, you can enjoy a mesmerizing sunset every evening.

Sunsets in South Africa

As a coastal mountainous city facing west, Cape Town has WAY too many sunset spots and deserves its own sunset guide. Oh haaaay, guess what, I wrote one! (complete with adventures also, because adventures & sunsets is the name of my blog, duh.)

I sought out all the best sunsets in Cape Town (and adventures too!) , and I came back with too many for myself to even experience during my time there. But that’s okay, because I will go back one day! You can catch the sunset while wine tasting in Cape town, shark cage diving in Cape Town , or doing lots of the best adventures in Cape Town if you want, too!

For the more brief purpose of this post, I will have to go with the classic Cape Town sunset spot. But as other bloggers have mentioned this spot too, I will continue below!

Table Mountain

This is one of the best African sunsets to see before you die. It’s basically a lifetime MUST. You can get up table mountain via cable car or you can do any of a million different hikes ( including guided ones ) for those who are a bit more adventurous. But honestly please check out my guide to Cape Town because there are dozens more sunset spots on the western-facing peninsula and mountains.

  – Kimmie Conner of Adventures & Sunsets

Camps Bay is an affluent suburb of Cape Town where you’ll find millionaire’s mansions, fashionable people, a beautiful beach and over 20 restaurants and cafés. It is nestled between Clifton and Llandudno beaches where you can also see the Twelve Apostles mountain range as well as the Atlantic Ocean.

You can enjoy a fresh seafood platter while sipping on champagne and watch the sunset after a day at the beach. Or better yet, why not live like a local and rent a cliff-side house or penthouse with priceless views over the Atlantic. This sunset was taken from our beautiful villa during our stay and it was A-M- A- Z-I- N-G. A glass of wine in hand and surrounded with good company what more can one ask for?

Tshipise Resort was an incredible resort and campground on the northern border of South Africa, and would be a perfect place to stop over on a road trip from Zimbabwe  or other surrounding countries. The nature here was stunning – with lots of bushy areas and rocky hills – and was like no other area of South Africa we saw.

I hiked up the mountain within the resort area just before the sun went down, and I was SO glad I did. Although the trail wasn’t very obvious and I ended up scrambling up rocks half the time, I enjoyed a beautiful golden moment at the top watching the sun go down.

african sunsets Hluhluwe national park

HluHluwe Game Reserve

This game park on the eastern coast of South Africa was rich with vegatation and wildlife. We caught sights of rhinos, elephants, water buffalo, and more as we drove through the hills of this park, and even  got caught in a rain shower or two.

But, the rain showers proved to be to our benefit when the sunset shaped up over some winding roads in the distance. We stopped on a western-facing hill to watch the sun go down over a vast expanse of game reserve. We caught a great sunset in Hluhluwe, but in that it’s very hilly and has good views-a-plenty, I have no doubt that this is yet another place to catch incredible African sunsets in South Africa on any day.

will travel for sunsets

Cape Agulhas – Southernmost Tip of Africa

Now, I didn’t actually watch the sunset here, but its positioning tells me that it would be a perfect place to do so! Cape Agulhas is the southernmost tip of the African continent – not Cape Horn like many history books denote!

Cape Agulhas is a tiny little beach town with the cutest red and white striped lighthouse museum that you can go inside. There are wooden boarded trails you can walk down to the sea, and actually put your feet in the water at the point where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet! Cool, huh? You can visit it quite easily as a day trip from Cape Town also.

If you come down here for sunset, you might be able to get the freshest fish & chips from a local restaurant, and be able to walk a little bit past the southernmost tip to get a lovely western-facing sunset mostly over the sea. I think it would be spectacular, with an extra sense of awesomeness due to being the southernmost tip of Africa, so I had to include it.

African Sunsets: Tanzania

We’ve always believed that no two sunsets are the same and each sunset is a sight worth watching. However, there was something incredibly special about the sunsets we saw in Pemba, Tanzania during our week long sojourn. Pemba is a lesser known island destination off the coast of Zanzibar, and is indeed a well preserved jewel.

Think of chalk white beaches with no one in sight for miles coupled with excellent diving experiences and underwater life. In such a paradise, it is no surprise that the sight of the sun setting would be exceptional. As a prelude to the darkness, the sky lit up with fiery shades of red almost every evening. We ensured that we finished all our activities by late afternoon to spend the evening watching phenomenal sunsets. Indeed, it was one of the best decisions we made on that trip.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Conservation Area is widely considered one of the world’s most pristine wildlife sanctuaries, and it’s also the largest intact, inactive volcanic crater.

Measuring around 2,000 feet deep and 100 square miles wide, this incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to more than 25,000 large animals (Cape buffalo, hippos, gazelles, wildebeests, etc.) and a surprisingly huge population of lions. For bird-lovers, there are the gorgeous (but endangered) grey-crowned cranes and thousands of lesser flamingoes who flock to Lake Magadi.

For my money, the Ngorongoro Crater is arguably among the best places on the planet for watching the sun set, especially if you can catch it from the crater’s rim. But you’ll need to time your exit from the park perfectly. The conservation area is only open for 12 hours total (from  6AM to 6PM ), and they’re VERY strict about enforcing the 6-hour time limit on each ticket. If you overstay your welcome, there are steep government fees involved.

Read more about the Ngongoro Crater here!

African sunsets ruaha national park tanzania

Ruaha National Park

I’ve seen many beautiful African sunsets, but perhaps the most memorable one was in Tanzania’s Ruaha National Park . Located in the heart of Tanzania, Ruaha is the ‘other park’ on the Southern circuit. Not nearly as popular as the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater, but equally if not more amazing. Ruaha features a wild landscape of baobab studded hills, rocky escarpments, and beautiful African wildlife.

So what makes the sunsets here so WOW? Ruaha National Park is literally covered in baobab trees. Along with the Acacia tree, the baobab is one of those trees that just screams “Africa.” At every twist and turn in the massive park is one of these trees, so any sunset here is bound to be incredible with the baobabs in views.

african sunsets serengeti tanzania

Serengeti Plains

There is no experience like sunset from the roof of a safari vehicle in the plains of the Serengeti. The vastness and wildness of the entire scene is incomparable to anything else. To get to see the animals in their completely natural environment sharing the same land with each other and no other people around to witness it, is a once in a lifetime experience.

The stillness and reverence you will feel in your soul after being allowed to witness and be a part of something so grande, so raw, will remain with you forever. Add a dramatic sunset to the biggest sky you’ll ever see, and you have magic. If there is any place in Africa to see the sunset of your life, it is the Serengeti.

Lamai, Serengeti

Some of the best moments in Lamai Serengeti happen after dusk, when the blue sky transforms into vibrant reds, pinks and oranges. After witnessing the incredible wildebeest migration followed by a lengthy photo shoot of lion cubs playing with their siblings we were all feeling a bit weary. It was time to head back to camp but it was too close to dusk that there was no way we were going to miss a sunset opportunity.

In Lamai, it is permissible to drive off track, making the area a perfect location to find a quiet and magical spot to watch the sunset. We also made it our mission to recreate our own version of the ‘classic’ African Safari sunset photo with the Marula tree in the background.

With a tight time frame before the sun fell below the horizon, we chased the perfect sunset spot. As we perched on the hillside we sat facing the silhouettes of Marula trees in the distance as the sun set dramatically in the distance. With no one else in close proximity other than the noises of elephants as they were heading back to their home for the night it was a perfect moment.

Zanzibar is one of East Africa’s best beach destinations and a great addition to a safari in Tanzania or Kenya due to its proximity and ease of access. The Indian Ocean surrounds Zanzibar, and if you wish to see the sun set in the ocean horizon you’ll want to stay on the western side of the island.

Luckily, that’s exactly where we decided to spend a few nights following our Safari in Kenya. The Residence Zanzibar is a luxury five-star hotel located on the southwest portion of the island. You’ll experience the most beautiful sunsets from the comfort of your ocean front villa or from anywhere on their mile long beach front.

Stone Town, Zanzibar

Zanzibar. Sounds exotic, huh? Because it totally is. The name describes the Tanzanian archipelago off the East coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean. There are two main islands and many small islands. The main island is usually just referred to as Zanzibar and is the location of the World Heritage Site and historic center of Stone Town in Zanzibar City.

Zanzibar has a complicated history and past, with major cultural influences from all over the globe due in part to being the main port for the slave trade in the 1800s. The island is now almost exclusively Muslim. If you want to experience an island paradise with idyllic beaches, but with a lot more culture than your typical beach destination, there is no better place than Zanzibar. I felt very safe in Zanzibar. Everywhere I went, I heard “Jambo!” or “Karibu!” always accompanied by a smile.

Sunset from the rooftops in Stone Town is otherworldly. With laundry fluttering in the wind, the ocean with wooden fishing boats in the distance, and colorful buildings in every direction, I long to revisit Zanzibar almost more than any other place. An equally beautiful place to visit sunset in Zanzibar is from the beach itself. Either way, Zanzibar will live in your memory as one of the most magical and exotic locales for sunset in Africa.

Sunsets in Zambia

african sunsets - livingstone sunset zambezi river victoria falls

Livingstone: Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is the Western name for this monumentally massive, 2k-long, 300ft-high waterfall between Zambia and Zimbabwe. But, the African tribes in the area have had another name for it for centuries – the “Mosi Oa Tunya,” or, “the smoke that thunders.” You will see that this name is very fitting if you visit the area during wet season! The water from the waterfall falls in such high volume and immense force that as soon as it hits the bottom of the waterfall it billows back up hundreds of feet in the air in a thick mist, or ‘smoke,’ that, well… thunders.

The sunset at Victoria Falls would be the most perfect if you view the falls from the pathway on the Livingstone, Zambia side, as it will set behind the falls from the pathway or over the river from anywhere in Livingstone. The sunset might be better from the Zimbabwe side in dry season (although I have not yet visited), but I would recommend Livingstone for full sunset view capabilities!

Since health and safety is, well, not totally a thing in Africa, they let you swim on the edge of the waterfall in both wet and dry season. Nope, I’m not kidding! Devil’s Pool is a famous pool you can only get to in dry season, whereas ‘Angel’s Pool’ is basically standing in waist-high water at the edge of a 300ft drop in wet season, while holding onto a rope. I’m not sure how I didn’t die, but I actually swam in Angel’s Pool Victoria Falls and you can see a video right her e (and a blog post) of me casually almost peeing my pants. It’s a must for adrenaline junkies everywhere.

Will There Be a Nice Sunset Tonight? How to Predict Sunsets Like a Pro

A Post By: Bruce Wunderlich

How to predict beautiful sunsets

Wondering whether tonight’s sunset will look dramatic or boring? You’ve come to the right place. Most folks don’t know that it’s possible to predict – often hours in advance – the beauty and intensity of the sunset . But with a basic understanding of the variables that go into sunset drama, you’ll be able to (roughly) determine the way a sunset will look in advance.

That way, you can decide whether it makes sense to a) head out with your camera to capture some stunning shots, or b) stay indoors and relax on the couch!

As a longtime landscape photographer , I’ve gained a keen understanding of sunset-prediction techniques. And in this article, I’m going to share everything I’ve learned over the years, focusing on factors such as:

  • Cloud cover
  • Air quality

Bear in mind that you can never predict a sunset with absolute accuracy (to do that, you’d need to see the future!). But the prediction tools and techniques that I’m about to share will give you a strong sense of the coming sunset, even if they’re not perfect.

Let’s get started.

What causes sunset drama?

brilliant dramatic sunset in Ohio

To understand why dramatic sunsets occur, we’ll need to do a quick physics dive (it’s not hard, I promise!).

Light from the sun is made up of all the colors in the rainbow. As the sunlight enters the Earth’s atmosphere, blue light is scattered in all directions, more than any of the other colors; during the day, this causes the sky to appear blue.

But at sunrise and sunset, the light must travel farther due to the sun’s low angle in the sky. And as the light moves through more of the atmosphere, the blue light is scattered until it’s no longer visible, the longer wavelengths of red and yellow stay in the sky, and we (potentially) see a stunning sunset.

Of course, there are times when the sunset doesn’t really materialize or just rather underwhelming, but that isn’t because the science fails – rather, it’s because the sunset is blocked by clouds or diminished by other factors. For instance, when the sky is completely covered with clouds, the sunset is practically unnoticeable. And if there is zero cloud cover whatsoever, the colors can be a bit of a letdown.

On the other hand, a sunset can occasionally be above and beyond spectacular, and by understanding the different factors affecting sunset quality, you can predict this in advance!

Spectacular dramatic sunset

Factors affecting sunset quality: the four predictors

Predicting a dramatic sunset is all about following the weather (and looking for the right indicators). So the first step, even before you learn about sunset predictors, is to find a good weather app or website.

winter sunset over snowy trees

Specifically, you need a weather forecast that provides information on the four sunset predictors: cloud cover, air quality, humidity, and wind speed. I like Weather Underground’s Intellicast maps , which give you detailed hourly reports, though feel free to search around for other options.

Now let’s take a closer look at your key predictors:

1. Clouds and cloud cover

Clouds are a crucial factor in predicting dramatic sunsets.

Why? Well, without clouds, there won’t be much of a sunset to see. Sure, you’ll get some colors, but they tend to feel rather faded, and the sky will generally make for boring landscape photos that need to be anchored by other elements of interest:

Sunset with limited cloud cover

On the other hand, with too many clouds, the sky will look dark and drab, like this:

Overcast sky in the late afternoon

So basically, you want clouds, but not tons of clouds. And for the best nicest sunsets, you want certain types of clouds!

Specifically, high to mid-level clouds are the most effective canvases, as they easily reflect the colors of the setting sun. Puffy clouds on the horizon at sunset will generally not allow the sun rays to pass through them, thus muting the sunset colors. Lower clouds (such as dark, rain-filled clouds) are not very helpful at reflecting much light and will therefore dull the sunset.

Again, cloud cover is good, but not too many or too few clouds. Check out your detailed weather report for cloud cover percentages and try to aim between 30 to 70 percent at sunset.

Don’t rely too heavily on your forecasting app, however! Ideally, you should observe cloud conditions in the afternoon. If the sky looks favorable, and the weather forecast suggests that the clouds will still be present at sunset, you’re in good shape. There’s never any guarantee, of course, but without much wind, clouds may stick around and create a beautiful sunset.

Here are a few cloud types that can produce dramatic sunsets:

  • Cirrocumulus clouds , which look like ripples on water. Blue sky is the usual backdrop.
  • Altocumulus Clouds , which often occur in sheets or patches with wavy, rounded masses or rolls, like little cotton balls. They are generally white or gray and usually appear after a storm.
  • Cumulus Clouds , which are easily recognizable, large, white, and fluffy, often with flat bases.
  • Cirrus Clouds , which are generally characterized by thin, wispy strands. These clouds arrive in advance of frontal systems indicating that weather conditions may soon deteriorate. Nevertheless, cirrus clouds are some of the best for photographing dramatic sunsets!

wispy clouds in the sky

2. Clean air

Clean air is very effective at scattering blue light – and more blue light scattering equals a more magnificent red, orange, and yellow sunset.

Predicting dramatic sunset

For this reason, one of the best times for dramatic sunsets is right after a rainstorm or windstorm. While lower clouds rarely reflect brilliant colors, note that in places where the lower atmosphere is especially clean, such as in tropical regions over open oceans, more vivid colors are allowed to pass through.

It’s the reason so many beautiful sunset images are captured in the tropics! It’s also the reason that I recommend checking the air quality indices when trying to determine whether the sunset will be nice; the cleaner the air, the better the colors (all else being equal!).

By the way, while the tropics are great for sunsets, areas with a lot of particulate matter, such as big cities, tend to be a lot less impressive. So if you’re thinking about traveling for some sunset photography, it’s always worth keeping your location in mind and steering for a cleaner spot.

3. Humidity

The amount of humidity in the air will also affect the colors of your sunset.

Lower humidity will produce more vibrant colors, whereas high humidity conditions will mute the colors thanks to the water content in the atmosphere.

(Note: Autumn and winter typically feature lower humidity than spring and summer, hence the reason for dramatic winter sunsets.)

Will the sunset be nice tonight? An amazing winter sunset

So the morning before a possible sunset photoshoot, make a careful note of the humidity – the lower the percentage, the better!

Ah, wind, the most fickle of all sunset predictors. Wind can enhance a beautiful sunset – but it can also destroy it, depending on the time of day.

You see, a change in wind direction can cause the clouds to develop ripples or billows, and this can create a beautiful effect; the setting sun may reflect a nice red glow onto the ripples, which is all-around gorgeous .

Dramatic sunset on the water

Also, as discussed above, clean air will produce more brilliant colors. A nice breeze before sunset can help clean things up and create some magical results.

Unfortunately, on days when favorable clouds are present in the afternoon, strong winds can remove those clouds and leave you with a clear sky at sunset, which is better than nothing but hardly ideal for photography.

So I highly recommend checking the wind forecast on your preferred app or website. Keep an eye out for wind speed and wind direction, and think about how it might affect existing cloud cover.

Your sunset drama prediction factors, recapped

Predicting sunsets doesn’t have to be hard! Just keep an eye out for these key indicators:

  • Mid to high-level clouds
  • 30 to 70 percent cloud coverage
  • Lower humidity
  • Calm winds (or a change in wind direction during sunset)

Also, the afterglow of the sunset, which can occur 15 to 20 minutes after the sun sinks below the horizon, can sometimes be much more spectacular than the actual sunset.

So stick around until after the main event, and you may be rewarded!

Oh, and be sure to check the entire horizon – in every direction – for potential photo opportunities. If the western view is boring, the eastern, northern, or southern view might prove more impressive!

Nice sunset over farm fields

Finally, always remember that weather can change, and if you’re patient, even a dismal sky can come to life, if only for a few moments!

Dark clouds with spectacular sunset colors along the horizon

Predicting dramatic sunsets: final words

We all love capturing breathtaking sunset photos – and we’re all likely familiar with the frustration that comes from heading outside with a camera, only to find that the cotton-candy sky you expected to see simply failed to materialize.

Fortunately, now that you’ve finished this article, you’re much better prepared to anticipate and take advantage of spectacular sunset colors. So the next time you’re wondering whether the sunset will actually be nice that evening, use the tips that I’ve shared. Look at your weather app, head outside, peek at the sky – and try to determine tonight’s sunset!

Now over to you:

Introduction to Sailing Yachts : Sailing yachts, with their gracefully arching masts and billowing sails, are both a nod to a bygone era and a testament to the timeless allure of the sea. Unlike motorized vessels, they rely predominantly on the wind, making the journey a serene communion with nature.

  • Safety First : Always wear a life vest, and if you’re inexperienced, ensure you have a guide or instructor accompanying you.
  • Pack Waterproof Gear : If you’re bringing along electronics or cameras, invest in waterproof bags or cases.
  • Mind the Environment : Paddle responsibly. Avoid disturbing wildlife and ensure you don’t leave any trash behind.

As the fiery orb descends, casting shimmering golden trails on the water, and you glide silently, paddle in hand, there’s an unspoken bond formed between human, nature, and the vast universe.

Kayak and canoe sunset cruises are raw, real, and remarkably unforgettable, making every stroke and effort worth the mesmerizing views.

Tips and Tricks for a Perfect Sunset Cruise

Embarking on a sunset cruise is akin to entering a realm of magical moments, where time seems to still just for a while. However, to fully immerse yourself in this experience and to make it as enchanting as the tales suggest, consider these tried-and-true tips:

Time it Right

Golden Tip: Start by checking the local sunset time. Arrive a bit early to ensure you’re settled on the deck, cocktail in hand, as the sun starts its descent.

Dress Smartly

Golden Tip: While sunsets are warm and mesmerizing, ocean breezes can be chilly. Layer up! Bring a light jacket or wrap, especially if you’re cruising in cooler climates.

Pick the Right Spot

Golden Tip: For the best view, find a spot that’s not too crowded. The bow (front) of the boat typically offers unobstructed views. However, the stern (back) can be less windy and equally scenic.

Sun Protection

Golden Tip: Just because it’s later in the day doesn’t mean the sun can’t be strong. Wear sunscreen and bring sunglasses to protect against those powerful pre-sunset rays.

Bring a Camera… and Patience

Golden Tip: Some of the most breathtaking scenes unfold just after the sun dips below the horizon. Wait for the afterglow, and you might capture a sky ablaze with color.

Stay Hydrated and Nourished

Golden Tip: Whether it’s a glass of wine or a bottle of water, keep yourself hydrated. Opt for light snacks to keep that seasickness at bay.

Mind the Motion

Golden Tip: If you’re prone to seasickness, pick a larger vessel (they tend to rock less), stay outdoors where you can see the horizon, and consider motion sickness remedies.

Engage with Onboard Activities

Golden Tip: Many cruises offer more than just scenic views — live music, dancing, themed nights. Participate and make the experience holistic.

Respect the Environment

Golden Tip: If you bring anything onboard, make sure to take it with you when you leave. Let’s ensure our beautiful oceans and waterways stay pristine.

cruise sunset

Research the Cruise

Golden Tip: Not all sunset cruises are the same. Some are romantic, some are family-friendly, others are party-focused. Read reviews and choose one that aligns with your sunset vision.

Local Knowledge is Gold

Golden Tip: Engage with the crew. Their tales, knowledge of the area, and insights can add depth to what you see and experience.

Pack Light, but Thoughtfully

Golden Tip: Aside from your essentials, consider a pair of binoculars for distant views, a blanket for added warmth, and a portable charger to ensure your devices don’t run out of juice.

Embarking on a sunset cruise is all about the harmony of preparation and spontaneity. With the right forethought, you can surrender to the moment, allowing the world’s natural wonders to sweep you off your feet. Here’s to sunsets that paint the sky and cruises that etch memories into our souls!

Chasing Sunsets Like Never Before

Sunsets have a universal allure — a magical moment when the world seems to pause, and hues of orange, pink, and purple paint the sky. But witnessing this spectacle from the heart of the waters, with waves softly murmuring and the horizon stretching endlessly, elevates it to an unparalleled experience.

From the intimate connection of paddling your own kayak, the rich history echoing in traditional boats, the sheer luxury aboard plush cruises, to the immersive fun of theme-based voyages, there’s a sunset cruise tailored for every traveler’s dream. Each offers a unique lens through which to admire nature’s grand evening show, paired with memories that will last a lifetime.

As you embark on your sunset cruise adventure, let the horizons beckon and the golden hues inspire. Let every voyage not just be about the destination, but the myriad stories, experiences, and emotions that the journey itself unravels. Here’s to chasing sunsets, embracing the beauty of the moment, and setting sail towards new adventures under the canvas of a twilight sky.

Happy cruising! 🌅🛥️

FAQs on Sunset Cruise Tips

As the allure of sunset cruises beckons many, a myriad of questions often arise. From practicalities to making the most of the experience, we’ve compiled a comprehensive FAQ section to shed light on your sunset cruise queries:

What should I pack for a sunset cruise?

Essentials include a light jacket or wrap, sunglasses, sunscreen, a camera, and any personal items. Optionally, consider binoculars, a blanket, and a portable charger.

Can I bring my own food and drinks on board?

This depends on the cruise operator. Some allow it, while others provide their own food and drinks. Always check in advance.

Is a sunset cruise suitable for children?

Most cruises are kid-friendly, but some may be tailored to romantic or adult-centric experiences. Check with the operator to ensure the cruise aligns with your family’s needs.

How early should I arrive for my cruise?

It’s recommended to arrive at least 30 minutes to an hour before departure. This gives you time to board, find a good spot, and settle in.

What if the weather is bad?

Many operators will have a rescheduling policy for inclement weather. However, a slightly cloudy evening can often lead to the most dramatic sunsets!

I get seasick easily. Is a sunset cruise a good idea?

If prone to seasickness, choose larger vessels as they tend to rock less. Staying outdoors and focusing on the horizon can help. Also, consider over-the-counter motion sickness remedies.

How long does a typical sunset cruise last?

Most sunset cruises last between 1.5 to 3 hours, giving passengers ample time to enjoy the scenery before and after sunset.

Is it safe to go on a sunset cruise during COVID-19?

Many cruise operators have implemented safety protocols in light of COVID-19. It’s essential to check with the operator, understand their measures, and follow guidelines.

Are pets allowed on sunset cruises?

While some operators might allow pets, most do not. Always confirm beforehand if you’re considering bringing your furry friend.

What’s the best season for a sunset cruise?

While sunsets are beautiful year-round, each season offers a unique experience. Summers might provide vibrant, warm glows, while winters can showcase more muted, pastel skies. Local reviews can provide insights into the best times in specific locations.

Do sunset cruises offer any entertainment?

Many do! From live bands to dance floors, themed nights to onboard games, sunset cruises often curate activities to enhance the experience.

I missed my scheduled cruise. Can I get a refund?

Refund policies vary by operator. While some might offer a reschedule or partial refund, others might not. Always read the terms and conditions at the time of booking.

Is there a dress code for sunset cruises?

Generally, sunset cruises have a casual dress code, but some luxury or themed cruises might have specific attire requirements. Always check in advance to dress appropriately.

Are there restrooms onboard?

Most medium to large vessels will have restroom facilities. However, smaller boats or private charters might not. It’s wise to check with the operator and use facilities onshore if needed.

Can I charter a private sunset cruise for special occasions?

Absolutely! Many operators offer private charters for birthdays, anniversaries, proposals, or any special event. These often come with customizable options to tailor the experience.

Will there be a guide or narration during the cruise?

Many sunset cruises, especially in touristy areas, offer guided experiences where a narrator or guide shares interesting tidbits about the surroundings. If this is something you’re keen on, inquire with the operator.

Can I swim during the cruise?

Some sunset cruises, especially those in tropical or warm locations, might have a swimming or snorkeling stop. However, safety is paramount, so always adhere to the boat captain’s instructions.

Is there a best side of the boat to sit on for views?

Both sides can offer spectacular views, but the bow (front) usually provides a more unobstructed panorama. It’s more about securing a spot that isn’t too crowded.

Are tips included in the ticket price?

While some cruises might include gratuities in the ticket price, it’s common practice to tip crew members, especially if you’ve received exceptional service.

Is Wi-Fi available on the cruise?

Larger, luxury cruises might offer Wi-Fi, but many sunset cruises focus on the natural experience and may not provide internet access. It’s a great opportunity to unplug and immerse in the moment!

Can I smoke on the cruise?

Policies vary by operator. Some boats may have designated smoking areas, while others might prohibit smoking entirely. Always check and respect onboard rules.

Do sunset cruises operate year-round?

In most destinations, yes, but frequency might reduce during off-peak or inclement weather seasons. Always check the operator’s schedule.

What if I have a specific dietary requirement for the onboard meal?

If meals are provided, many operators are accommodating to dietary needs when informed in advance. Always communicate any requirements at the time of booking.

Are there group discounts available?

Many sunset cruise operators offer group discounts or package deals. If traveling with a group or hosting an event, it’s worth inquiring about reduced rates.
