Past, present and future on display at 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise

woodward dream cruise how many cars

As a Woodward Dream Cruise virgin until Saturday, I had limited experience with the car event — mostly annoyance at the traffic snarls it creates or an occasional nod at a particularly cool car.

Saturday, however, I left the air-conditioned comfort of my own car and made my way through the madness.

People from all over began to line the streets in tents and folding chairs as early as 7 a.m. and by 11, a rainbow of cars edged down Woodward bumper to bumper. On the sidewalk, dog walkers stopped to talk with car owners, strangers traded stories about their own vehicles, and kids of all ages wriggled their way through the crowd and pulled on their parents' fingers to ensure they were paying adamant attention to the parade of traffic.

The historic event began almost 30 years ago, in 1995. Organizers initially expected to draw around 30,000-40,000 visitors from metro Detroit, but were shocked when over 250,000 came to the inaugural cruise.

'I'm a big union guy': Jay Leno talks unions, EVs before driving 1K horsepower Dodge Demon in Dream Cruise

It is now the largest single-day classic car event in the world.

Doug Green started drag racing on Woodward Avenue when he was 15. He officially got a license two years later, but says his privileges were revoked within a year because he had accumulated so many tickets from his hobby.

"My insurance was crazy for a while, but it didn't stop me," he said with a laugh.

Now 73, Green has made the 3½-hour drive from Mackinaw City to Detroit every year since it began, missing just once because he got sick.

"It just brings me back to good times," he said.

Different car companies stood at their booths, advertising their latest models while owners of previous models polished, cleaned and discussed them.

Not all cruisers appreciate the same things, however, and some take great pride in their vehicle's sparkle and shine, while others, especially those with so-called "rat-rides," boast about their car's original design.

Brad Pepperell, 53, of Ferndale, has been attending the Dream Cruise since he was a child and says he appreciates the variety.

"You see things here you're never going to see anywhere else," he said.

As if on cue, a dark orange van began to pass; it appeared to have been flipped upside-down. Another set of wheels were attached so that the car was driving on its roof. A cacophony of shouts — from "WHOA" to "Did you see that?" — rang through the crowd gathering on the sidewalk.

In Birmingham, the National Corvette Restorers Society took up about a block of Old Woodward. Since the group was founded in 1974, the members' goal has been to restore the cars to how they were in the dealership.

"These cars were a part of families. It's a way of bringing back memories," says Mike Bailey, 80, as he stands in front of his 1961 Corvette.

Bailey says that he was thinking of selling his car when his son, Mike Jr., was 3 years old. Upon hearing the news, however, his son began to weep and told him he couldn't possibly. So Bailey kept it.

Decades later, Mike Jr.'s own 2023 Corvette now stands next to Bailey's 1961.

More than just a car show or traffic jam, I realized, the Woodward Dream Cruise is a place where the past, present, and future converge, and where tradition and innovation are celebrated together, as one.

One man, passing the Baileys' cars while gently holding his young daughter's hand, stopped and bent down to meet her gaze.

"Look at the history here," he told her. "This is where the Corvette started and there it is now. Isn't that cool?"

A Brief History of the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise

And a Look to the Future

Todd Lassa Writer Aug 19, 2016

Mercedes-Maybach will not unveil any concept coupes at the 2016 Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise; there will be no new Cadillac concept, either, though Chevrolet is the Dream Cruise's sponsor for Saturday, its sole official day.

But there will be plenty of cars. General Motors will have a prominent display of its classic muscle cars, FiatChrysler will have a big display of classic and modern cars - it has already used Cruise week, which coincides with Monterey Car Week and Concours d'Elegance, to unveil the Dodge Charger Daytona and Challenger R/T. Ford will have Mustang Alley, once again, on East Nine Mile Road off of Woodward Avenue in Ferndale, one mile north of the Detroit line.

The Detroit suburb of Ferndale held the first Dream Cruise in 1995; organizers there expected between 25,000 and 30,000 people to show up for that fundraiser for the Nelson House soccer field. More than 250,000 showed up. Within a few years, the Detroit Three were using the Dream Cruise to promote their muscle/sports/ponycar renaissances, with executives often holding press conferences on Friday and flying off to the Monterey Peninsula for Sunday's Pebble Beach Concours, though the execs have been largely absent this decade.

woodward dream cruise how many cars

Before it had Chargers and Challengers, Chrysler used the week of Dream Cruise to introduce to the automotive press special edition versions of its PT Cruiser virtually every year through the '00s, so life is getting better for enthusiasts even as the Dream Cruise looks toward a future in which the enthusiasts use it as the rare chance to get out classic cars that they actually drive themselves. Dream Cruise will be even more of a novelty, and even more important to enthusiasts by 2021, when Ford Motor Company says it will market production autonomous cars .

It's easy to think of the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise as an anomaly that could only be successful in a metro area with an unusually high collection of classic sports, muscle, luxury, and family cars owned by engineers, designers and marketing managers.

Organizers estimate that 1.5-million people attend the Dream Cruise with 45,000 cars cruising or on display. They have no estimates for how many come from outside Metro Detroit, but "the hotels are booked, the occupancy rates are high," says Tony Michaels, executive director of the Woodward Dream Cruise Sponsored by Chevrolet, which entails board members from each participating city between Ferndale and Pontiac.

"It isn't a single venue. It's 16 miles of roads," Michaels says, in describing the relatively loose organization of the event.

Find a car near you

The unexpected success of that first Dream Cruise, the soccer field fundraiser, hinted that just maybe this is something that Ferndale, Royal Oak, Birmingham and Pontiac should have started a decade or more earlier. Royal Oak's economic revival had just begun in the mid-'90s, Ferndale's was still a few years into the future, and Pontiac is just now getting started, with the help of the soon-to-open M1 Concours.

"In the second, third year, [Dream Cruise] became bigger than life," Michaels says. "As this group gets older, you have a whole new group coming in. It really is Americana as its best."

Younger enthusiasts aren't necessarily devoted to locally designed or built rides, however. There always has been a foreign car contingent, especially in tony Birmingham, on Saturday. But there's a growing group of Japanese and European car enthusiasts who tend to hang out in the parking lot next to Pasteiner's Auto Zone Hobbies on summer Friday and Saturday nights leading up to the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise Sponsored by Chevrolet.

There. I've managed twice to get the official sponsorship name of the big Saturday event into this column. Despite that sponsorship, despite the annual FiatChrysler Mopar unveiling and Ford-sponsored Mustang Alley, Dream Cruise week is a relaxing antidote to the extended luxury car show and the multimillion-dollar auctions that Monterey Car Week & Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance has become. And unlike the West Coast event, your classic car can get more than a drive across the 18th fairway - an activity that may become much more special as autonomous cars take over our daily commutes.

The Woodward Dream Cruise, a day-long celebration of car culture, began in 1995 as an effort by Nelson House and a handful of volunteers to raise money for a children’s soccer field in Ferndale, Michigan. Intended as a one-time event that might draw as many as 30,000 spectators, the event was a huge success, attracting 250,000.

As a tribute to the car culture of the 1950s and 1960s, the Cruise now attracts more than 1.5 million visitors from around the world. More than 40,000 muscle cars and street machines, not to mention collector and special-interest vehicles of all kinds, crowd Woodward Avenue for the cruise, making it the world’s largest one-day vintage car event, although unofficial cruising and viewing starts weeks earlier.

Held on the third Saturday of August, the 12-hour cruise celebrates the era of classic American cars though plenty of late model vehicles also take part. Although Woodward Avenue starts at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue at the Detroit River, the cruise begins north, at Eight Mile Road , taking a 16-mile loop of the suburbs along Woodward between Ferndale and Pontiac. The host communities stage free car shows, “oldies” music concerts and family events while much of Woodward is jammed as curbside crowds spectate.

The event garners extensive coverage in the local media as well as nationally, highlighting Detroit and its major export, the automobile. In recent years, automakers that used to “unofficially” test their cars along Woodward in the 1960s have used cruise events like the Dream Cruise to showcase their latest vehicles, meanwhile providing significant financial support, signaling the importance of these events and the audiences that they attract.

Things To Do

Scenes from the Dream Cruise. FILE PHOTO — MediaNews Group

After a one-year hiatus, the Woodward Dream Cruise will be back in its traditional form but with some changes to adapt to not only the pandemic but people’s excitement around the event returning for 2021, organizers said.

The Woodward Dream Cruise traditionally takes place on the third Saturday in August, so this year’s event will take place from 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21. There are no fees to watch or cruise in the event and people of all ages are welcome to participate.

Ferndale representative and President of Woodward Dream Cruise Michael Lary said he hopes car enthusiasts, families and residents along the Woodward corridor will come out to enjoy the weather, see the vehicles and visit the businesses along the route who are participating in one of the region’s favorite car events.

“What makes it fun more than anything is the cars and the creative people who own them, whether it’s someone who has taken a rust bucket and has brought it back to life by either customizing it or taking it back to its original look or whether it’s someone who took an old vehicle and with their imagination made something fun from it,” Lary said. “It is the automotive enthusiast that makes this event repeat itself year after year.”

As of now, there are no coronavirus-related restrictions but mask wearing is encouraged for those who want to wear one, Lary said. There likely will be fewer vendors along Woodward Avenue, but otherwise, participants will see all of the cars and excitement return this year, he added.

Events are scheduled all along the route, which includes Berkley, Birmingham, Bloomfield Township, Ferndale, Royal Oak, Pontiac and Pleasant Ridge. Radio station 104.3 WOMC Detroit’s Greatest Hits and WXYZ-TV Channel 7 also will have spots along the famous M-1 roadway.

Ford sponsorship

The 26th annual Woodward Dream Cruise is presented for the fourth year by Ford Motor Co. and the featured heritage vehicle for the event is the original 1966 Ford Bronco starring as the featured heritage vehicle. The first-generation Ford Bronco, America’s original SUV, was built from 1966 to 1977.

According to the Dearborn-based automaker, the first ever Bronco wore the Ford codename of G.O.A.T. for its “goes over all terrain” capability. It debuted as a sports-oriented off-road 4×4 on Aug. 11, 1965, and was dubbed “a completely new line of sports-utility vehicles,” which is considered the first reference to an SUV by an American manufacturer.

The Bronco model depicted on the logo of the 2021 Woodward Dream Cruise “celebrates the women and men who assemble the Motor City’s iconic SUV and the innovative spirit it embodies,” Ford officials said. Ford’s Woodward Dream Cruise presenting sponsorship “provides the company with a platform to honor its heritage and showcase how Ford is capitalizing on its strengths in its mainstream and iconic vehicles – including many of which are assembled in the Motor City,” Ford said.

In addition to Bronco models old and new, Ford will also display some of the automotive industry’s most recent vehicle debuts, including the all-new 2021 Mustang Mach-E GT all-electric SUV, the all-electric 2022 Ford F-150 Lighting and the recently revealed Ford Maverick compact pickup truck – the first standard full-hybrid pickup in America.

“Woodward is our hometown celebration, commemorating the best of what we do and what we assemble – right here in the Motor City,” Rob Johnston, Ford Performance marketing manager, said in a statement. “It’s fitting that this year’s Dream Cruise honors the original Bronco at a time when the all-new, Michigan-built Bronco is rolling off the line.”

Cruising memories

Known throughout southeast Michigan, the Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest one-day celebration of classic car culture that attracts more than 1 million visitors and more than 40,000 muscle cars, street rods, custom, collector and special interest vehicles.

The Woodward Dream Cruise started as a fundraiser for a soccer field in Ferndale in 1995. In just a few short years, it evolved into the world’s largest one-day automotive event. Spectators and cruisers travel to metro Detroit, the birthplace of the American automobile, to demonstrate and participate in an event that celebrates an ongoing love affair with the automobile.

The Cruise Committee agreed to cancel the event in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Lary said. They were comfortable bringing the largely outdoor event back in 2021. Not only has there been high vaccination rates across the area, especially in Oakland County, but people’s love for the event truly fuels the event, he said.

“There are so many loyal people to this event,” Lary said. “It is the car enthusiast that makes this happen. It’s not us.”

People have so many great memories from previous events as well, which ensures that people – whether they are car owners or watching along the route – come back year after year, Lary said.

“When I first moved here, I didn’t know what the Woodward Dream Cruise was, and my friend and I made the mistake of driving on Woodward in Royal Oak on the day of the event,” Lary recalled. “It was a bumper-to-bumper experience. I got out of the car and walked back to Ferndale. I got there before my friends in the car did. But it was really fun to do that walk because I got to see a lot more on the sidewalk than I would have in the car.”

Lary has organized Ferndale’s Cruise events for several years now and he loves to see people socializing, sharing stores and getting to know what makes Metro Detroit great.

“People always have stories about a particular car, why it means so much to that car owner or that spectator who walks through and sees that classic car they had as a kid or owned as a teenager. They love to share those stories,” Lary said.

The official 2021 Woodward Dream Cruise Merchandise is now available for purchase at the Ferndale City Hall, located at 300 East Nine Mile Rd, in downtown Ferndale. Hours of Operation: Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m..

Lary said he hopes people feel comfortable participating in this year’s Woodward Dream Cruise and that everyone stays safe with appropriate social distancing, hand washing and mask wearing if they choose.

“We’re looking forward to the return of the Woodward Dream Cruise and hope everyone will be conscious of public safety and will be conscious of your fellow man,” Lary said.

The 27th Annual Woodward Dream Cruise Revving Up For The Largest Celebration Of Detroit Cars August 19, 2023

August 19, 2023.

Two Old Classic Cars Driving sis by side

(Update: July 17, 2023) — The 27th Annual Woodward Dream Cruise is North America’s largest automotive parade of classic cars.

The woodward cruise is the largest single car cruise in the country attracting over 1.5 million visitors, and over 40 thousand cars.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is a fascinating event with a rich history.

It all started when Pamela S. McCullough, Mayor, and Nelson House, a plumber from Ferndale, came up with the idea for the cruise in 1994 to help raise money for a children’s soccer field in his community.

They envisioned a small gathering of car enthusiasts, but the event quickly grew beyond his wildest dreams.

The inaugural woodward cruise took place in August 1995, and it was an instant hit. The original expectation was for 30,000 to 40,000 spectators, but the actual turnout was a whopping 250,000.

The Woodward Dream Cruise 2022

Starting in Pontiac and ending in Ferndale, The Woodward Dream Cruise 2023 will parade over forty thousand vintage Detroit muscle cars up and down Woodward Avenue, attracting over 1.5 million visitors.

Since then, the Woodward Cruise has grown exponentially. Today, it attracts over 1.5 million people and 40,000 classic cars each year, making it the world’s largest one-day automotive event.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is a celebration of Detroit’s automotive history and a testament to the enduring appeal of classic cars.

The event spans a 16-mile stretch of Woodward Avenue and includes nine communities from Ferndale to Pontiac. It’s not just about the cars, though. The Woodward Dream Cruise is a community event, with live music, street vendors, and family-friendly activities adding to the festive atmosphere.

Started in 1995, the 16-mile car parade cruises directly up and down Woodward Avenue, passing through the cities of Pontiac, Birmingham, Royal Oak, Bloomfield Township, Huntington Woods, Bloomfield Hills, Birmingham, Pleasant Ridge, and Berkley.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is a testament to the power of community and the enduring appeal of classic cars. It’s a celebration of Detroit’s rich automotive history and a chance for car enthusiasts from around the world to come together and share their passion.

Over 1.5 million people are expected with more than forty thousand ‘50s and ‘60s classic cars for the famous 16-mile Woodward Dream Cruise in the suburbs in NE Detroit. Ford Motors will be the primary sponsor for the cruise for the fifth consecutive year.

Cruise in Shoes

The Woodward Dream Cruise is not just about classic cars; it also includes a unique event known as “Cruise in Shoes.” This event is a 5K run/walk that takes place on the morning of the Dream Cruise. It’s a chance for participants to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Cruise in a different way, on foot rather than from behind the wheel.

“Cruise in Shoes” kicks off at 7:30 AM, and the course takes participants down a stretch of Woodward Avenue, allowing them to experience the excitement of the Dream Cruise before the classic cars take over. It’s a family-friendly event, with participants of all ages and fitness levels welcome.

The event is professionally timed, and medals are awarded to the top finishers in each age group. But it’s not just about competition; it’s also about community. “Cruise in Shoes” is a chance to get out and enjoy the Dream Cruise atmosphere while also getting some exercise.

Whether you’re a serious runner looking for a unique race or a casual walker who wants to enjoy the Dream Cruise in a new way, “Cruise in Shoes” is a fun and exciting part of the Woodward Dream Cruise experience.

To participate in Cruise In Shoes, please pre-register online at www.CruiseinShoes.com/registration or sign-up on the day of the event at Royal Oak Shrine High School.

By The Numbers: Woodward Dream Cruise

woodward dream cruise how many cars

The Woodward Dream Cruise, the world’s largest one day automotive event, draws millions of spectators and historic vehicle enthusiasts to the city of Detroit every August. Check out some interesting Dream Cruise statistics and find out why—thanks to new Michigan legislation—the entire month of August now means worry-free driving for anyone with antique or historic plates.

August also means its Dream Cruise time. The 2012 Woodward Dream Cruise kicks off this year on Wednesday, August 15. The five-day celebration runs through Sunday, August 19. An annual rite of summer for millions, the Woodward Dream Cruise draws spectators and historic vehicle lovers to Detroit every year from as far away as New Zealand, Australia, Japan, and Russia.

Here’s a rundown of what that means for the city of Detroit and historic vehicle lovers everywhere:

$56,000,000—Amount of money the Woodward Dream Cruise annually generates for the Metro Detroit economy, which is $7 million more than the 2006 Super Bowl in Detroit.

100—Number of charities that benefit from the sale of official Dream Cruise merchandise and refreshments every year.

250,000—Number of participants in August 1995 after Nelson House and a group of volunteers organized the first ever Dream Cruise along Woodward Avenue.

1,100,000—Estimated number of participants and spectators at the Woodward Dream Cruise in 2011.

40,000—Number of muscle cars, street rods, custom, collector, and special interest vehicles that cruise down Woodward Avenue during the August event in 2011.

54—Number of tickets issued to cruisers for traffic violations (namely burnouts and squealing tires) in 2011.

200,000 – Approximate number people protected by S.B. 1146—a law that allows drivers with historic tags in Michigan to get out and enjoy their classics the entire month of August without fear of violating usage restrictions. Click here to find out more about the background of this bill, which was advanced by the HVA and Senator Mike Kowall .

The Detroit Woodward Dream Cruise is the mothership of all car events. It's a celebration of Woodward Ave and car enthusiasm in the heart of the Motor City. I mean seriously, this incredible car cruise draws thousands of classic cars, muscle cars, trucks (and lots of crazy stuff ) to thunder down Woodward Avenue between Pontiac and Ferndale.

Chris and I can't wait to go this August !

AND...more than 1.5 million car enthusiasts from all over the world are revved up to see some spectacular (and crazy) vehicles!

See the World's Biggest Cruise!

When is the 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise?

August 19, 2023!

BUT ... several communities have fun events and classic car shows on August 18, 2023. See the event schedule below!

Woodward Dream Cruise Frequently Asked Questions

What day is the Woodward Dream Cruise 2023? August 19, 2023

Is the Woodward Dream Cruise free? Yes, the Dream Cruise is free to attend!

How long does the Woodward Dream Cruise last? The cruise is just one day!

  • Anyone not driving a classic/muscle car are asked to stay out of the two right lanes nearest to the curb.

What time is the Woodward Dream Cruise?  9 am to 9 pm.  BUT many people with show cars in the static car shows begin to leave parked shows (as they want to cruise) around 3:30 pm so I recommend hitting up the shows in the morning.

Are Their Bathrooms?   In the more populated areas, especially in Royal Oak, there are porta johns along Woodward Avenue.

Is it Safe To Attend?   As with any large city, don't leave your items unattended. Make sure your bags/purses are zipped and closed. There is a very large police presence at the show and we felt comfortable.  We recommend going as it is a great family event!

Is This Your First Time at the Woodward Dream Cruise?

If it’s your first time to the show , we recommend finding a spot somewhere between Royal Oak and Birmingham as this stretch gets the most traffic and excitement.

We recommend arriving early so you can find parking off Woodward Avenue before the side streets and lots are full.

We recommend bringing:

  • Ear plugs if you are noise sensitive (especially for young children)
  • Folding chairs with umbrellas
  • Water/non-alcoholic drinks
  • TP (in case the porta johns are out)

History of the Woodward Dream Cruise

Woodward Dream Cruise was dreamed up as a small fundraiser to raise money for a soccer field in Ferndale, Michigan. Then, in August 1995, a group of people wished to relive the fun of the 50's and 60's, when music and Motor City steel roared down Woodward Avenue.  Blowing away expectations, the event drew 250,000 people!

Now, the Woodward Dream Cruise is the World’s Largest One-Day Automotive Event!

The Cruise brings about 1.5 million people and 40,000 classic cars to the area each summer.

People travel from all over the world to attend and be in the show.  It's an incredible experience!

My friend Marcy highly recommends eating at Sylvan Table which we will try this year. It is a farm-to-table restaurant. The restaurant is in a few hundred year old barn they moved from the east coast and built a farm around it. Cool, huh!

  • Other restaurant ideas that come highly recommended from locals include the Latin restaurant Freya and The Apparatus Room.

Are There Bathrooms at the Woodward Dream Cruise?

There are lots of porta johns along Woodward Ave in the more populated areas. Memorial Park in Royal Oak has a large bank of porta johns for the classic car show.

Motown Bistro and food trucks lining Woodward Ave in Detroit

Absolutely! There are food trucks and vendors lining Woodward avenue in the more populated areas, especially Royal Oak and Ferndale. There are also lots of great restaurants along Woodward Avenue.

We enjoy eating at Brown Iron Brewhouse in Royal Oak .

  • Chris was eyeing the Brown Iron Burger with Wagyu Beef, applewood smoked bacon, cheddar cheese and a yummy caramelized onion spread but got the Slow Smoke BBQ Pork sandwich with yummy pickles!
  • I got the Cali salmon BLT with avocado crema...be sure to order extra crema, it's yummy!

Brown Iron Brewhouse interior packed with people enjoying a meal

Um, can you say BACON CANDY?  Drool.

Woodward Dream Cruise: August 19, 2023

From the Woodward Dream Cruise , Cruise History :

“Did you know that the Woodward Dream Cruise actually started as a small fundraiser to raise money for a soccer field in Ferndale, Michigan?

“In August 1995, Nelson House and a group of volunteers looked to relive and recreate the nostalgic heydays of the 50s and 60s, when youth, music and Motor City steel roamed Woodward Avenue, America’s first highway. That year, 250,000 people participated—nearly ten times the number expected. The rest, as they say, is history.

“Today, the Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest one-day automotive event, drawing over 1-million people and 40,000 classic cars each year from around the globe—from as far away as Australia and Japan. Cruisers from all across North America, including Canada and Mexico, caravan to Metro Detroit to participate in what has become, for many, an annual rite of summer.”

The Best Oddball Cars We Saw at the 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise

Along with flashy sports cars and pristine classic muscle cars, the Woodward Dream Cruise welcomes plenty of unusual custom creations and obscure models.

subaru kei truck

Car shows aren't just about getting a glimpse at the latest 1000-hp supercars or poring over every detail on a well-maintained classic. They're also meant to show off the breadth of human ingenuity and creativity, something the Woodward Dream Cruise does to perfection. The show is open to anyone and anything, and just about every sort of vehicle you can imagine makes an appearance, and even some you never could've dreamed up. Read on to see some of the most bizarre and peculiar vehicles we saw at the 2023 Woodward Dream Cruise.

ford mustang gt with mustang gt trailer

This "Rat Royce," as is painted on the door, looks like the offspring of a Formula 1 car and the evil big rig from Steven Spielberg's Duel . Instead of a V-6 hybrid powertrain like modern F1 cars, however, this custom job features a Caterpillar inline-six diesel aft of the front wheels. The wide stance, dual rear wheels, semi-truck cab with a visor, and roof-mounted horns makes this one imposing truck.

lordstown endurance

Ohio-based startup Lordstown Motors finally began producing its electric Endurance pickup last fall. The Endurance's four hub-mounted motors emit 440 horsepower and eke out roughly 200 miles of range from the 109.0-kWh battery. But things quickly went south for the nascent automaker, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June . Only a handful of trucks were built and many were recalled earlier this year, so it was a surprise to see this Endurance driving down Woodward without manufacturer license plates.

tuktuk

The Woodward Dream Cruise draws herds of Polaris Slingshots , begging for attention with gaudy paint jobs and music blaring from their tinny speakers. But this enthusiast brought a different sort of three-wheeled contraption, a tuk-tuk. Also known as an auto rickshaw, this colorful tricycle had "Thailand" emblazoned on the back, where these vehicles are a popular alternative to taxis.

wooden ford truck

We couldn't look away after seeing this unique creation lumbering down Woodward. The truck takes the term "woody" to new heights—instead of wood paneling along the vehicle's flanks, the entire body is constructed from timber. But all of the essentials are still present, with headlights, side-view mirrors, and even a Ford badge. That makes this a Ford Fir-150, we wood have to guess.

fiat 500e

Fiat announced last fall that the latest 500—now offered exclusively as an EV—will come to the United States for 2024. The U.S.-spec version will be revealed this year's Los Angeles auto show, but we got a sneak preview with this Europe-market example we found at Woodward. Despite a switch to electric power, the 500e looks as charming as ever.

suspended animation hot rod

Not much information exists about this bizarre-looking hot rod, but we were able to dig up a photo online that identifies "Suspended Animation" as the hand-built 1974 concoction of one Ron Morgan of Dearborn, Michigan. We bet at least a few recreational substances were involved in the dreaming up of the buglike "Suspended Animation."

vaz 21011

Along with the cornucopia of American muscle cars, Woodward brings out vehicles from around the world, with this VAZ 21011 the only Russian vehicle we spotted. This heavily altered, licensed version of the Fiat 124 was assembled throughout the 1970s and 1980s, with the meager 1.3-liter four-cylinder sending less than 70 hp through a four-speed manual transmission. A sign in the window said this garage find from Moscow underwent a full restoration after being imported to the U.S. in 2020.

labatt blue car

Shotgunning a Labatt Blue is one thing; calling shotgun in a Labatt Blue is another. Although not as well known as Oscar Mayer's Weinermobile, this mobile beer can evoked plenty of smiles from the spectators. We're not even sure if this droptop pop-top is an official marketing effort from Labatt Brewing Company—based just across the river in Toronto, Canada—but this alcohol-fueled hop-rod certainly went down well with the Woodward crowd.

subaru sambar dias classic

This adorable van isn't just a Subaru Sambar, it's the Dias Classic, a retro-themed version of the kei van sold in Japan throughout the 1990s. With less than 60 horsepower from the rear-mounted four-cylinder engine, the Sambar certainly wasn't the quickest vehicle at Woodward. But a five-speed manual and rear-wheel drive could make this cutesy hauler more thrilling than you might expect .

ford festiva race car

It may not have 1578 horsepower like the Bugatti Bolide , contain a shrieking V-12 engine like the Aston Martin Valkyrie AMR Pro , or generate 1400 pounds of downforce like a Ferrari FXX K Evo , but we bet the owner of this Ford Festiva race car has just as much, if not more, fun as the owners of those exclusive track-only hypercars.

jeep wrangler jurassic park

We saw several faithful re-creations of iconic movie vehicles at Woodward, but this Jurassic Park–themed Jeep Wrangler was one of the most accurate. Everything is as it should be, from the red livery to the auxiliary roof lights, and it even packed dinosaur-catching equipment on a trailer hitch platform. The only dinos we saw at the Dream Cruise, however, were Ford Raptors and Ram T. Rexes .

lifted ford galaxie 500

On last year's oddball list , we included a lifted Chevy Camaro IROC-Z. This year the monster truck treatment has been applied to a mid-1960s Ford Galaxie 500. The boxy coupe towered above traffic and even wore bull bars and a pair of Hella lights for the full off-roader look. The Galaxie even required a step to reach the driver's seat thanks to the chunky tires.

delorean with ford raptor motor

Great Scott! It's a a twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 from a Ford F-150 Raptor stuffed into the back of a DeLorean! The enterprising owner mated the 450-hp powertrain—a notable upgrade over the stock Renault V-6's measly 130 ponies—to a Porsche six-speed manual and fitted his creation with four-piston Brembo brakes and KW coil-over suspension. He told us visual upgrades are in the works, and he plans to offer the conversion to other DeLorean owners next year.

mini gokart

Vehicles of all shapes and sizes are present at Woodward, including this minuscule go-kart doohickey. We're surprised this contraption even needs to wear plates, given that its driver probably weighs more than all of its parts combined.

chevy hhr offroader

This Chevrolet HHR is what happens to a Jurassic Park Jeep Wrangler when it drops out of high school and hangs out with the wrong crowd. We never thought we'd see one of Chevy's retro-styled vans converted into an off-roader, but if the "Gamble" vanity plate is any indication, this HHR was built to race in the Gambler 500 , an off-road rally for cheap, self-made all-terrain vehicles.

Headshot of Caleb Miller

Caleb Miller began blogging about cars at 13 years old, and he realized his dream of writing for a car magazine after graduating from Carnegie Mellon University and joining the Car and Driver team. He loves quirky and obscure autos, aiming to one day own something bizarre like a Nissan S-Cargo, and is an avid motorsports fan.
