So good. Oh so good. Our guide was Peter for both the south side tour (free) and the Whiskey/beer tasting and Trad music tour (that one is not free). PETER is brilliant; he is so smart and knowledgable, friendly, helpful, respectful. We learned a great deal about Dublin and Irish history on the first tour and whiskey, craft beer and Guinness in the evening. So get up and go meet at the spire for your tour and give him a large tip at the end. He doesn't even ask. Fab.

We did the southside tour in the mornig with Eoin. Really good fun, humourous, informative and comprehensive. We had a late lunch then backed it up with the afternoon Northside tour with James. Again, very informative, interesting and most of all, fun. Thanks guys, well done. Highly recommended.

When we booked the walking tour, I expected it to be a bog standard "see a couple of buildings, hear a few stories" but the North tour was probably the best walking tour I have been on by far. Our tour guide James was definitely the highlight of the tour, generating so much enthusiasm in his vast storytelling of Irish history through the north part of Dublin and, for a few moments, I actually felt as if I was a proud, patriotic Irishman (I'm actually Scottish)! If you are visiting Dublin and would like to go on a walking tour, this is definitely the one you should pick.

This was the first time I attended such tour, but surely not the last. Conor, our guid was a real funny guy, we really like the tour. He not just said a lot (really a lot, as he speaks very fast, but still understandable for a non native speaker), but has so many stories and also an ironic viewpoint on Irish people and their history. If you want more than a simple sightseeing tour and can choose, go with Conor!

I make a point to do a walking tour my first day every time I visit a new city. This one was by far the best! (I did the South tour). Our guide James was informative, insightful, funny, and had a great perspective on the history of Dublin and Ireland from its origins to current events. He did a wonderful job of weaving together history, culture, and humor to create a truly enjoyable experience. One side note- it takes about 2 1/2 hours, with one small break in the middle, so if you have difficulties with long walks or standing for a long time, or have little kids, this is not the tour for you. Otherwise, I highly recommend it!!!

The tour was a total win, we laughed so much over the stories told. CONOR was definitely the key to have this experience, as his style, articulation of words and info sharing capacity (=words told per minute) was excellent.

Rebellion & Independence – Dublin North Side Tour

yellow umbrella walking tours dublin

Ireland’s capital city witnessed heroic deeds and remarkable social change over its history, it holds stories of great ideas of freedom and solidarity but also of clashing cultures and world-views. This unique tour will focus on the changes that Dublin and Ireland went through over 100 years, between the mid 19th and mid 20th century.

At first glance, in the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Dublin looked relatively successful. But the first glance was deeply misleading. The reality was harsh and brutal. Infant mortality, hunger, crime and alcoholism, even among children, were ever present. Life in Dublin was not a fairy tale. The situation got tragic when the staple crop for most of the Irish poor – potatoes – was destroyed by a disease for several years in a row. The Potato Famine changed Ireland forever. About 1 million of its people died of starvation and diseases that followed after, and about two million left in a desperate search for a better life. It proved to be a watershed moment also for Irish national aspirations and accelerated changes in people’s mentality. They were ready to fight and shed blood for their ultimate goal – independence. This will be the story of these people, the story of desperation, struggle and faith.

The tour will give you an overview of the history of the Irish struggle for independence – over the centuries, its people committed themselves to a myriad of sacrifices in the name of shared ideals. The dozens of lost uprisings ended up with the Easter Rising of 1916, which led to the War of Independence. Starting the tour at the General Post Office which became the headquarters of the insurgents, we will tell you what motivated them to take action, we will visit the Garden of Remembrance, a memorial to those who died for the state’s freedom. We will tell you what Sinn Féin is, and how it was formed. We will explain what impact did the Great Famine have on society, and finally tell you why theatre and actors were so influential in the drive for independence.

Join us on a walk in the Irish rebels’ footsteps, to get a better understanding of what their ideas and beliefs were, but also to understand the modern city of Dublin. Join us and see the city through the eyes of Ireland’s freedom fighters!

During this 2,5 hour tour you will see:

  • General Post Office
  • Garden of Remembrance
  • St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral
  • Custom House
  • Famine Memorial

Amazing tour - highly recommend before enjoying Dublin

Jack was our tour guide and the tour was amazing from start to finish. The pace was spot and the humor and empathy for the Irish plight was amazing. Jack’s story telling took us through 2 centuries of rich history with focus on Irish fight for independence. I recommend this tour before you enjoy Dublin . It will make you appreciate the compassion, tenancity and humility of the Irish population. It’s incredible to think these events happened only 100 years ago.

Amazing experience

My friend and I had an amazing time! Gorgeous places and very well organised! Our tour guide Rob was awesome! :))

What people say about us, southside dublin free walking tour.

Southside Tour with Peter was Fantastic. I am all about walking yours in towns and this was one of the best. It lasted about 3 hours, but I could have wandered around with Peter for a couple of more hours and not gotten bored. We got great general history of Ireland and insite to specific sites on the South Doubling tour. Highly recommend.

Absolutely recommend!

During my short trip to Dublin I decided to book a free walking tour with the Dublin Free Walking Tour – South Side. Our guide was Conor (with one ‘n’) who did a great job sharing bits of Ireland’s/Dublin’s history and present in a relatively short amount of time (one can learn a lot in 3 hours) and with some humour. I had lots of fun learning during this tour and I would 200% recommend anyone to book it. I’m sure you won’t regret it!

Great experience

Our tour lasted 2hr45 of the Southside, and was really excellent. Our tour guide gave us lots of information and was happy to answer questions, and was generally very friendly and easy to understand. It’s a contribution at the end as well, but nominally free. Would definitely recommend!

All you need to know within 2 hours

A great mixture between information, fact, cultural insights and first hand tips for pubs and restaurants. Would encourage everyone to go on a tour!

Must-do in Dublin

Had a fantastic South Side tour with Richie on Sunday morning. Very informative and funny, and we learned interesting history about Dublin. It’s three hours but time flies by! Highly recommend to anyone wanting to take a walking tour – best way to get your bearings plus learn about the buildings instead of just looking at them!

Interesting tour!

Very interesting tour about the history of the city of Dublin. Our guide Conor was dynamic and captivating! We recommend to discover the city at the beginning of your stay!

Informative and fun tours with a great guide

We did both the north and south side tours with Peter. He was absolutely fantastic and really knowledgeable, giving an insight into the city we never would have had walking round in our own. He was also really helpful in answering any questions and providing recommendations for the rest of our trip. Great experience and would definitely advise anyone visiting Dublin to book on to both tours.

Educational and fun. Highly recommended!

My hostel recommended this company to me. Incredibly knowledgeable guide for the free morning & afternoon walking tour (tour date 30.11.2021). Did not expect this level of knowledge and presentation skill from a free tour, but will definitely take a closer look at their normal tours next time I am in Dublin. I am sure they are fabulous too. Overall highly recommended!
