The 6 Best New Cruise Ships for 2024

Are you someone who loves that “new cruise ship” smell? Ok, that’s not really a thing, but it absolutely is something that cruise lines continue to roll out the biggest, wildest, and most amazing new ships you’ve ever seen.

The cruise industry knows that it is in a constant battle to capture the imagination of the potential customers. The best way to do that is to come out with new ships that push the envelope of what’s possible at sea. Every iteration takes what passengers love about a cruise line and makes it even better.

And with so many lines introducing new ships, that also means you have the ability to find a ship that offers what you’re looking for. Whether you’re the type that wants an entire waterpark on your cruise ship (yes, that’s coming in 2024) or you want an ultra-luxury ship unlike anything else at sea, then the coming year has new options you’ll want to know about.

With that in mind, here are the best new cruise ships for the coming year that you need to know about.

Utopia of the Seas

Debuting in July 2024 , Utopia of the Seas is a big deal… literally. The ship is the sixth Oasis-class vessel to join Royal Caribbean. This class of ship is currently the cruise line’s largest (though it will soon be eclipsed by the all-new Icon class), and set the bar in how much you can do on a modern ship.

Utopia of the Sea will offer a massive 237,000 gross tons (making it the second largest cruise ship in the world when it arrives) and hold nearly 5,700 guests at double occupancy across its nearly 3,000 staterooms. But what’s impressive is not the size, but what you can do on a ship this large.

There will be eight different neighborhoods, three waterslides, five pools, and more than 20 places to eat. Adults will love the Solarium, a popular spot that features an indoor pool and hot tubs along with a glass roof to allow sun in while keeping things warm. Central Park will also be featured, offering a spot to enjoy lush greenery even while in the middle of the ocean. Nearly two dozen bars are also offered.

In short, if you get bored on a ship like this, then that’s your fault — especially given that you’re only going to be aboard a few days.

Typically cruise lines debut their newest ships on week-long cruises. But Royal Caribbean is instead porting Utopia in Port Canaveral and will sail 3-4 day cruises featuring the cruise line’s private island, CocoCay . They are calling it “The World’s Biggest Weekend,” and the nice thing is it means you can sail a completely new ship for relatively little. Cruises start under $500 per person.

Carnival Jubilee

Royal Caribbean isn’t the only line going big. Technically debuting in December 2023 , Carnival Jubilee is the third ship in Carnival’s Excel class that includes Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration.

This class of ship set a new bar in cruising for Carnival fans, and Jubilee will keep that streak alive. At 180,000 gross tons, the ship (and sister ships) are the largest in the Carnival fleet, but also offer the most to see and do.

Perhaps the most eye-catching feature is the BOLT roller coaster over the back of the ship, which has become a signature of this class. But when it comes to Carnival — a cruise line known for having lots of fun things to do onboard — Jubilee offers much more than other ships in the fleet. From multiple pools to “The Ultimate Playground” with waterslides, sport court, and mini golf, to a comedy club and casino, there are a lot of favorites packed onboard.

What we think helps the ship stand out, however, are the food options. It’s nothing special for a huge ship to have dozens of options. But Carnival offers an amazing amount of free options including Big Chicken, Chibang!, Street Eats, and Cucina Del Capitano. There are paid specialty restaurants also offered, but it’s hard to beat the included lineup.

Sun Princess

A part of a completely new class of ships for Princess, Sun Princess is unlike anything else in the brand. When the ship debuts in February 2024 , it will mark the largest in the fleet at 175,000 gross tons (roughly the size of Carnival Jubilee).

As you might expect with Princess, this ship isn’t making heads turn due to wild waterslides or roller coasters. Instead, the ship’s architecture, design, and luxury are what’s impressive. One signature of Sun Princess is The Dome. It’s a glass-covered multi-deck venue that’s a pool area during the day, but at night is planned for performances that feature acrobatics.

Then there is The Piazza, another “wow” spot on board. This serves as the center atrium for the ship, with glass panels circling and offering a sphere-encased spot where you can lounge, eat, and take in gorgeous views across both sides of the ship.

Even the theater has been reinvented, with the Princess Arena. It can transform seating arrangements to fit different shows, including circular seating with a stage in the middle — unlike other ships at sea.

Then there are all the other perks and highlights. A massive center pool area, a glass-covered Sea-View Terrace with lots of sun and sweeping views, and even a two-story spa.

Celebrity Ascent

If you’re the type that wants a little more luxury and elbow room, then Celebrity Ascent will definitely pique your interest when it arrives in November 2023 . The ship is the fourth in the line’s Edge class (being similar to Celebrity Edge, Apex, and Beyond), which is famous for its cantilevered Magic Carpet area that hangs over the side of the ship, moving up and down from near the water to 13 stories up.

But there’s much more to the ship than just the bright orange platform that’s instantly recognizable. For one, Edge-class ships feature some of the highest space ratios of any cruise ship, meaning there are fewer passengers per gross ton.

Veranda rooms (a fancy term for balcony cabins) run up to 228 square feet plus the balcony. Typically room sizes are around 180 square feet on most lines. In other words, you should have plenty of elbow room to enjoy the ship.

And enjoy you will. Celebrity is known for a higher-end atmosphere that’s more focused on luxury. Spots like the Rooftop Garden where you can relax and take in the views figure prominently on Ascent. Eden also makes an appearance, the three-deck lounge and bar spot that features massive windows to bring in ocean views.

Of course, Ascent will also have a focus on food. There are more than a dozen cafes, bars, and lounges, eight specialty restaurants, four main dining rooms and four included restaurants. And with menus featuring high-end dishes like Nova Scotia lobster casserole and prime rib, it will be hard to not have memorable meals on the ship.

Seven Seas Grandeur

Technically this ship makes its debut in November 2023 , but its first full year of sailing will be in 2024. For those who care more about luxury and the onboard experience instead of huge mega ships, this is the ship you want to pay attention to.

Regent Seven Seas is known for being a high-end cruise line. Its latest iteration with Seven Seas Grandeur is pushing the bar even higher.

First, there is the space. The ship is relatively small — just 55,500 gross tons and carrying 746 passengers. That provides a “space ratio” of 74.4 gross tons per passenger, or roughly double what you find on most mega ships.

Every cabin on the ship is a suite with its own balcony, and the smallest size available is 307 square feet. That’s about 70% larger than a typical balcony cabin on a mass market ship.

Across the ship, it’s all about luxury and sophistication. From high-end restaurants (think French cuisine in one restaurant or the ability to design your own meal in another) to bocce ball courts, this is not meant for travelers looking for a cheap cruise. It’s meant to be a one-of-a-kind experience.

If you want the best of everything, opt for the Regent Suite, a 3,150 square foot suite (with 1,300 square foot balcony) with its own in-suite spa, a mini pool, and three walk-in closets. Just be prepared to open your pocketbook. We saw prices of nearly $85,000 per person for some two-week cruises for this cabin.

Icon of the Seas

We’d argue that no ship is as anticipated in cruising (not just for 2024 but in history) than Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas. So what’s the buzz all about? Anytime there’s a new largest cruise ship in the world, there’s reason for interest. When it arrives in January 2024 , the ship will be the first to top the 250,000 gross ton mark. All told, Icon will be nearly 1,200 feet long and have the ability to carry 7,600 passengers at max capacity.

But it’s not just the size of Icon that’s so compelling. It’s the fact that the ship looks like nothing else at sea and features things never before seen on a cruise ship.

Let’s start with the full-fledged waterpark at the back of the ship. Category 6 will feature six different slides ranging from extreme drop slides to family raft slides. At the front you’ll find the Aquadome, complete with indoor area that features a waterfall and stage for the water-focused theater and lounge seating with wraparound views.

Eight neighborhoods are aboard Icon of the Seas, so there will be a spot for you to enjoy no matter what you’re looking for. This includes the all-new Surfside area that’s specifically built for those with smaller kids, including pool, splash area, and restaurants for families. 

In total, you’ll find seven pools (including Royal Caribbean’s first pool with swim-up bar), 22 different eateries, the popular Central Park, ice-skating rink, and more. Put simply, if it’s possible, it’s on Icon of the Seas.

Cruising is one of the fastest growing sectors of tourism, with passenger numbers projected to reach 37.2 million by 2025, according to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). Cruise lines are responding to this growth by building new (and often, larger) vessels with all the bells and whistles, including technological advancements that are more environmentally friendly and create the capability to use alternative fuels.

MSC Euribia: June 2023

Seven Seas Grandeur: November 2023

The 746-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur will be Regent Seven Seas Cruises' third Explorer-class vessel when it launches late this fall. The line's signature Regent Suite – coming in at an impressive 4,443 square feet – has also been redesigned by Miami firm Studio DADO.

A few additional standout spaces include the art nouveau design of the Observation Lounge (located at the bow of the ship) and the reimagined Serene Spa. The stunning new Compass Rose is the ship's main dining room. Meanwhile, the onboard art collection is also notable: Seven Seas Grandeur will set sail with the first Fabergé egg at sea.

Celebrity Ascent: November 2023

Carnival Jubilee: December 2023

Icon of the Seas is the first Icon-class vessel in the Royal Caribbean International fleet – and the first new class of ship since 2014. When the massive vessel debuts in January 2024, it will replace Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas as the largest ship at sea (Icon of the Seas is 6% larger). The ship features eight distinct neighborhoods – including the new Surfside neighborhood, a colorful space geared toward family fun with kids clubs, Splashaway Bay, themed eateries and bars, adjacent staterooms and more.

There are four additional new neighborhoods as well. Thrill Island features Category 6, the largest water park at sea, while Chill Island boasts the line's first swim-up bar and The Hideaway features the first suspended infinity pool at sea. AquaDome, the impressive glass-enclosed space at the top of the ship, is home to the AquaTheater, panoramic ocean views, a waterfall, and bars and restaurants.

Sun Princess will have many new attractions when it launches in early 2024. One notable highlight is Park19, a top-deck space with activities for kids of all ages, including the Sea Breeze Rollglider, the first ride of its kind on a cruise ship. This new attraction soars 19 decks high and offers unparalleled views of the ocean below.

When Queen Anne launches in spring 2024, it will be Cunard Line's 249th ship since the company's inception in 1840, and the line's first new vessel in 14 years. The 3,000-passenger ship will feature a fresh, modern design, yet still give a nod to the Cunard's art deco past.

Once on board, guests will discover new entertainment venues like the Bright Lights Society show bar and more wide-open spaces throughout the ship, as well as Cunard 's first two-story theater. New international dining options include Japanese restaurant Aji Wa with sushi and omakase menus, plus Indian cuisine at Aranya. Queen Anne also offers an extensive health and wellness program in collaboration with health group Mareel that features a large thermal suite, a spa pool and a top-deck wellness studio.

Utopia of the Seas: July 2024

Top feature: Three- and four-night ultimate weekend getaways

Fares begin around: $471 per person (double occupancy) for a three-night Bahamas cruise

Sails to: Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay (Royal Caribbean's private island)

Utopia of the Seas will be Royal Caribbean's sixth (and final) Oasis-class ship when it debuts in summer 2024. With a capacity of 5,668 passengers, the vessel will join the line's other Oasis- and Icon-class ships as the largest cruise ships sailing on the high seas. The ship will have the same eight neighborhoods as other Oasis-class ships, including Central Park, The Boardwalk and the Pool & Sports Zone.

The 40-plus food and beverage options will include new additions like the Pesky Parrot bar and a themed "mixed reality" dining experience that takes place on a train. A reimagined playscape is another addition, with nets, games, puzzles, slides and climbing walls for junior cruisers. The line's Ultimate Abyss – a dry slide with 10 stories of thrilling twists and turns – will now stretch an additional 43 feet, making it the longest dry slide at sea.

Explora II: August 2024

Top feature: Luxurious cabins

Fares begin around: $4,500 per person (double occupancy) for a seven-night Mediterranean cruise

Sails to: Caribbean and Central America, Mediterranean, Arabian Peninsula and Red Sea, India, Indian Ocean and Africa

As sister ship to Explora I, Explora II will offer the same transformative travel experience for 922 guests. The luxury vessel will feature 461 oceanfront suites with private terraces. Cruisers can take advantage of 11 culinary options across six dining venues, a dozen indoor and outdoor bars and lounges, and a Chef's Kitchen. Guests will also have access to four pools, 64 private cabanas and wellness facilities.

Silver Ray: Summer 2024

Top feature: One of the most spacious ships ever built; extraordinary space-to-guest ratio

Fares begin around: $4,000 per person (double occupancy) for a nine-night cruise to South America

Sails to: Mediterranean, Northern Europe, British Isles, South America, Caribbean and Central America

Silver Ray, Silversea's second Nova-class ship, is scheduled to set sail in summer 2024. The 728-passenger, low-emissions vessel will offer the same advanced hybrid fuel technologies as its sister ship, Silver Nova. It will also have Silver Nova's horizontal layout and asymmetrical design, creating more open public areas and providing suites with 270-degree views. In addition, guests on board the luxury vessel will have their choice of eight dining venues and a wide selection of bars and lounges, including The Marquee, a new alfresco restaurant.

Viking Vela: December 2024

Top feature: Larger than Viking's other ocean vessels, carrying up to 998 passengers

Fares begin around: $4,999 per person (double occupancy) for a 12-night northern lights cruise

Sails to: Scandinavia, British Isles, Iceland

Measuring 748 feet long and 101 feet wide, Viking Vela will be the line's largest ship when it debuts at the end of 2024. It will accommodate 68 more passengers than its sister ships, but feature Viking's signature veranda staterooms, public spaces, amenities and dining venues. Seasoned Viking cruisers can look forward to favorites like The Nordic Spa, the Wintergarden, Mamsen's, the Explorers' Lounge, the Sports Deck, Manfredi's Italian Restaurant and The Chef's Table.

Disney Treasure: December 2024

Top feature: Debut of new Disney Parks-inspired onboard venues

Fares begin around: $4,028 per person (double occupancy) for a seven-night Caribbean cruise

Sails to: Eastern and Western Caribbean, Castaway Cay (Disney Cruise Line's private island)

Fans of Disney Cruise Line will find many familiar venues, attractions and restaurants on the new Disney Treasure, sister ship of Disney Wish . However, there will also be plenty of new features, including the theme of the ship: adventure. The Grand Hall, inspired by the movie "Aladdin," is designed with dark shades of blue, turquoise and gold and features a golden statue of a magic carpet with Aladdin and Jasmine.

Plaza de Coco replaces Disney Wish's "Frozen" dining experience with a two-night Mexican, "Coco"-themed theatrical dinner show. Meanwhile, "Disney The Tale of Moana" – a Broadway-style production based on the film "Moana" – will be exclusive to Disney Treasure. Adults will also find new lounges, such as the Jungle Cruise-themed Skipper Society and the Periscope Pub, which is inspired by "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." Disney Treasure can carry up to 4,000 passengers.

MSC World America: Spring 2025

MSC's new futuristic ship – and sister ship to MSC World Europa – will be based in Miami and sail the Caribbean. The LNG-powered, 6,762-passenger ship will offer more than 420,000 square feet of public space and many of the attractions found on World Europa, such as the MSC Luna Park Arena and World Galleria. There will also be more than 30 dining venues, bars and lounges, as well as the line's private enclave, MSC Yacht Club.

Oceania Allura: June 2025

Oceania Allura will be the eighth ship in Oceania's fleet, the second vessel of the line's Allura class and the sister ship to Oceania Vista. The 1,200-passenger Allura will offer the same upscale amenities as Vista, as well as a new Chef's Studio and one of the highest space-to-guest and staff-to-guest ratios in the cruise industry. Allura is scheduled to debut in June 2025.

Star Princess: August 2025

Star Princess is scheduled to set sail in 2025 as the sister ship to Sun Princess. The 4,300-passenger, LNG-powered ship will offer the same features as Sun Princess, including the Dome, the Piazza and the line's Signature Collection Suites. The vessel will also have 29-plus restaurants and bars.

Star of the Seas: Summer 2025

Royal Caribbean plans to introduce Star of the Seas – the second Icon-class vessel and sister to Icon of the Seas – in summer 2025.

Disney Cruise Line: 2025

Disney purchased the former Global Dream from Genting's Dream Cruises in 2022, when it was still being built at the German shipyard MV Werften. Disney plans to base the ship in Singapore for at least five years, offering Disney vacations to the Southeast Asian market. When it launches in 2025, the vessel will be the line's seventh ship and is expected to carry 6,000 passengers. Another newly built, currently unnamed Disney ship is planned to debut in 2025, as well.

Norwegian Cruise Line: 2025 and beyond

The third Prima-class ship is expected to be approximately 10% larger than the first ship in the class, Norwegian Prima (143,535 gross tons). The following ships for the line are anticipated to be even larger, with the fifth and sixth Prima-class vessels (debuting in 2027 and 2028) weighing as much as 171,000 gross tons.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity's fifth Edge-class ship will be more eco-friendly, thanks to the addition of a new tri-fueled engine model and the capacity to store three different kinds of fuel, including methanol. The effort toward net-zero emissions and more sustainable cruising is a partnership between Royal Caribbean, the French shipyard Chantiers de L'Atlantique and the technology firm Wärtsilä. A debut date for this ship has not yet been announced.

The New Cruise Ships We’re Most Excited About in 2023

This year, cruise lines that include celebrity, oceania, virgin voyages, and regent seven seas are unveiling not just some of their most impressive but also some of their most ecofriendly vessels to date..

Each year, a fresh batch of cruise ships draws headlines and fanfare. The pandemic, however, slowed down ship launches to a mere trickle as cruise lines weathered the public health crisis storm. But for 2023, with cruising fully back in action, a robust new flock of vessels is being unveiled that introduces not just sleek new designs and exciting amenities but also a stronger focus on more responsible cruising than ever before.

Cruising certainly isn’t known as being the most climate friendly mode of transportation, but as technologies advance and stronger climate commitments come to fruition, cruise lines are debuting some of their most environmentally conscious ships yet. The result is that travelers can hit the high seas knowing that cruise companies are making more meaningful efforts to reduce their footprint. It’s a start at least.

Here are our picks for the most exciting cruise ship launches coming in 2023.

“Celebrity Ascent” from Celebrity Cruises

The Celebrity Ascent will debut in the Caribbean at the end of this year.

With a specialty restaurant by legendary chef Daniel Boulud and spaces envisioned by British designer Kelly Hoppen, the 3,260-passenger Celebrity Ascent is the fourth ship in Celebrity Cruises’ award-winning Edge class—and it’s no less impressive than its sister ships . The Retreat on top is reserved for suite guests and has its own restaurant, lounge, and multi-level sundeck with pool. If you book a splurge-worthy Edge Villa, you can take dip in your very own outdoor plunge pool. The ship debuts in December in the Caribbean.

Green notes

The Edge-class ships consume 20 percent less fuel when compared to the line’s previous generation of vessels. Like most new ships, Celebrity Ascent will also be able to reduce emissions in port by connecting to shore power, when available. And the vessel will be part of Celebrity’s fleet-wide “zero waste” goal. Currently, 85 percent of the line’s waste is “recycled, repurposed, or sent to a waste-to-energy facility,” according to Celebrity’s sustainability statement .

“Explora I” from Explora Journeys

Explora Journeys is a new luxury cruise line from the MSC Group.

The 922-passenger Explora I is the debut ship of Explora Journeys , an all-new luxury cruise line owned by MSC Group, the Geneva-based shipping container giant that also owns MSC Cruises. On a ship that’s big by luxury standards, guests will stay in oceanfront suites, penthouses, or residences, lounge around four pools, and choose from 18 food and beverage options. Unusual activities and entertainment examples will include music master classes and a monthly full-moon party. The ship debuts in northern Europe in July, with five sister ships scheduled to join it by 2029.

Explora I uses an emissions control system known as selective catalytic reduction to decrease its nitrogen oxide emissions—another extremely harmful climate pollutant—by up to 90 percent. It’s also equipped with battery storage that will allow for hybrid power generation once the new technology becomes available. Two of its sister ships will be powered by hydrogen.

“MSC Euribia” from MSC Cruises

With its #SavetheSea hashtag on its side, the MSC Euribia is a floating reminder of what’s at stake for the world’s oceans if cruise ships don’t do more and better.

MSC Cruises wants the world to know that its 6,327-passenger MSC Euribia is environmentally focused. The ship’s hull is decorated with huge underwater scenes and includes the hashtag #SaveThe Sea. Guests will lounge around five pools, one large enough for 1,000 people. For more intimate surrounds, splurge on the exclusive MSC Yacht Club section of the ship for access to a dedicated sundeck and pool, restaurants, bars, and lounges. The ship debuts in June 2023 and will sail its first season in the Norwegian fjords.

MSC Cruises recently laid out the framework for its goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. In addition to running on cleaner-burning liquefied natural gas (LNG), the MSC Euribia has such features as an advanced wastewater treatment system, which the line says means no water leaves the ship without meeting the highest environmental standards.

“Norwegian Viva” from Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Viva will be a big ship but with more intimate touches like the fine Italian dining venue Onda by Scarpetta (pictured in the rendering).

Debuting in August in the Mediterranean, the 3,219-passenger Norwegian Viva is the second in a newer class of upscale Norwegian Cruise Line ships geared toward cruisers who want a plethora of activities without huge crowds. The ship has a separate complex for suite guests, a multi-million-dollar art collection, and dining options that include a hip food hall with a solid international roster. For the kid in all of us, there’s the three-level go-kart racetrack up on top.

Norwegian Viva has integrated cutting-edge technologies that filter out up to 98 percent of sulfur oxides and up to 90 percent of nitrogen oxide emissions. It’s also equipped with an advanced treatment system that handles all wastewater produced on board and can plug into shoreside power.

“Resilient Lady” from Virgin Voyages

Adult-only line Virgin Voyages may be cheeky, but the line has has some ambitious climate goals for its vessels.

The trendy, adults-only cruise line Virgin Voyages is debuting its third ship, the 2,770-passenger Resilient Lady , in May 2023 in the Mediterranean. Given the no-kids environment expect super-fun parties indoors and around the pool, slightly naughty entertainment, and sophisticated dining. There’s also a tattoo and piercing parlor, should you have the urge to get inked or pierced.

Virgin Voyages aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Some of the new tech that will help it get there includes Climeon, units that use heat from the ship’s engines to generate a portion of the electricity on board (which decreases fuel demand). Additionally, the company invests in carbon offsets along with emissions-reducing technology, such as a catalytic reduction system (which reduces up to 75 percent of nitrogen oxide emissions), and exploring alternative fuel options for future sailings. The smart bracelet that unlocks passengers’ cabin doors is made of recycled plastic.

“Seven Seas Grandeur” from Seven Seas Cruises

Welcome to ultimate luxury—a Regent Suite on the forthcoming Seven Seas Grandeur .

The latest “world’s most luxurious cruise ship” from Regent Seven Seas Cruises (each new vessel outdoes the last in terms of extreme luxury) debuts in Europe in November, before a season in North and Central America. Expect on the 750-passenger, all-suite Seven Seas Grandeur the brand’s signature extravagances such as marble floors, crystal chandeliers, gold leaf here, and expensive art there.

Technology will reduce up to 90 percent of nitrogen oxide emissions by transforming it into water and nitrogen, while a waste heat recovery system will heat auxiliary systems, such as potable water. Among shore excursions, which are included in fares, are some 150 “eco-connect tours” focused on local conservation efforts.

“Silver Nova” from Silversea

On the super-luxe Silver Nova , the restaurant S.A.L.T. will focus on culinary education and local food culture.

Deputing in August in the Mediterranean, the 728-passenger Silver Nova will be the largest ship in the fleet of ultra-luxury brand Silversea . An expanded pool area is designed for optimum views from cushy lounge chairs, and the ship will boast 10 bars and lounges and 8 restaurants—including S.A.L.T., with a focus on culinary education and local food culture. The spa, with its own pool, is inspired by Roman baths.

This ultra-luxe ship is one of the most environmentally conscious ships in the world. It’s equipped with a large-scale hybrid power source, which combines hydrogen fuel cells, batteries, and dual engines that run on LNG. It can achieve emissions-free operations in ports.

“Vista” from Oceania Cruises

It’s been more than a decade since Oceania launched a new vessel. Enter: Vista .

Oceania Cruises’ first new build in 11 years, the 1,200-passenger Vista, debuts in June in the Mediterranean. The ship offers an impressive 12 dining options—important on an upscale line that prides itself on its popularity with foodies. Vista will have the line’s signature cooking school and largest-in-fleet staterooms. At the top end, palatial Owner’s Suites are being styled by Ralph Lauren Home, which is also decorating the top-of-ship library.

In 2022, Oceania launched some 200 Go Green tours that look to educate travelers on ways people at ports are working to conserve their environment. In St. Lucia, you can book a tour to learn about beekeeping practices at an apiculture collective; in Norway, you can meet with a designer who upcycles to create eco-conscious clothing.

The largest "small ship" companies are Viking and Ponant .

The industry's estimated revenue for 2018 was USD 40 billion, with projected growth to USD 59 billion (2027). In terms of source passengers, the largest markets are North America (50+%) and Europe (30+%). The fastest-growing market is luxury cruising, with the largest companies being Viking Ocean, Viking Expeditions, Silversea, MSC Expeditions (separate fleet), Ponant, Hapag-Lloyd, RSSC-Regent.

In 2022, the ship orders with deliveries planned in 2023-2028 were 72 (units) amounting to ~USD/EUR 46 billion.

In 2023, the number of cruise vessels (ordered and scheduled for launches in 2023-2028) was 56 (~USD/EUR 39 billion, average cost per unit ~USD/EUR 680M), including 19 (2023-inaugurated), 10 (2024/30,000+ berths), 19 (2025), and 20 (2026-2028).

By 2028, the new vessels (2023-28) add to the global fleet 129000+ berths.

New MSC ships 2017-2027

On March 20, 2014, MSC and STX France signed in Paris a letter of intent for building 2 new mega-liners with scheduled deliveries in 2017 (Meraviglia) and 2019 (Bellissima), each with GT 167,600 tons (slightly smaller than Quantum-class / 167,800 GT), but with bigger passenger capacity - 4500 (vs 4180).

In February 2016, MSC ordered two "Meraviglia Plus" liners with max capacity 6300 passengers (200 more cabins, 16 m longer compared to Meraviglia-Class). The order made MSC France's largest private foreign investor - with USD 8,6+ billion in export contracts over a 5-year period. On April 6, 2016, MSC signed with STX France for the construction of up to four World-Class vessels - LNG-powered , with GT tonnage 250,000 tons and max passenger capacity 6800.

In November 2017 MSC ordered 2x "Seaside EVO" class ships from Fincantieri (contract value EUR 1,8 billion). The new ships are bigger (16 m longer, 17,330 GT tons heavier, with 200 more cabins / 467 more passengers) in comparison to Seaview and Seaside. Newbuilds' deliveries were scheduled for 2021 (Seashore) and 2022 (Seascape). With Seaside EVO, MSC had a total investment of EUR 10,5 billion into 12 new vessels with scheduled deliveries by 2026. The first of four "World Class" vessels will be delivered in 2022.

In October 2018, MSC and Fincantieri signed an MoA for 4x ultra-luxury expedition (total value EUR 2+ billion). The newbuilds (EXPLORA-class/first unit delivery in 2023-Q3) have GT tonnage 64,000 and 500 cabins. The remaining 3 units are due to enter service one per year (2024-2025-2026).

In 2023, MSC's fleet had 21 liners.

New Carnival Corporation ships 2019-2024

In March 2015 Carnival Corporation ordered 9 vessels to be built by two different companies. Fincantieri SpA (Italy) constructs 5 units (at Monfalcone and Marghera yards), while Meyer Werft BmbH constructs the other 4 units in Germany (Papenburg) and Finland (Turku).

All new liners feature next-generation designs and marine architecture and technologies, each designed accordingly to the brand it serves (Costa, AIDA, Princess, Holland America, CCL-Carnival).

In 2019 was established CSSC Carnival China/ADORA CRUISES - a Chinese-American joint venture company with a separate fleet of 2x ex-Costa ships (Atlantica, Mediterranea) plus 2 newbuilds (2023, 2024).

Explora Journeys

New cruise line Explora Journeys is set to launch its first ship, Explora I , in May 2023. The boutique vessel will come fitted with a total of 461 spacious suites, with even the entry level staterooms—called Ocean Terrace Suites—measuring as some of the largest in the industry with 377 square feet of space. Every guest room comes with thoughtful touches as part of Explora Journeys’ ‘Home at Sea’ concept, which includes perks like a walk-in wardrobe, heated bathroom floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, a Dyson Supersonic hairdryer, and wireless bedside charging stations. Best of all, every suite has a private terrace, furnished with daybeds and a dining set for al fresco meals. In its debut year, Explora I is scheduled to visit 132 ports across 40 countries, including a handful of destinations rarely visited by cruise ships, like Saint Pierre, Martinique.

Aurora Expeditions' new Patagonian treks will take travelers to glaciers and other natural formations.

On the heels of launching its new expedition ship, Sylvia Earle , in November 2022, Aurora Expeditions will launch new Patagonia trek itineraries through Chile. According to the adventure line, the new itineraries will “dovetail seamlessly” as an add-on tour to its Antarctic expeditions, many of which set off from Ushuaia, Argentina. (Transportation between Argentina and Chile is arranged as part of the tours.)

On the 10-day itineraries, travelers will hike rugged paths to sites like the Perito Moreno Glacier and the Ascencio Valley. There will be plenty of wildlife sightings along the way, including Andean condors, rheas, flamingoes, and guanacos. Even better: The tours are limited to a small group of just 20 hikers, ensuring the serenity of the glacial lakes and snow-capped mountains remains intact. Once on board the Sylvia Earle , travelers can unwind in a heated saltwater pool, as well as participate in classic expedition activities, like citizen science programs, Zodiac boat rides, and more.

From the launch of another expedition ship, Polaris , to innovative new river ships around the globe, Viking is ensuring its place on the cruise industry's cutting edge this year. Polaris , the line's second expedition vessel, is set to roll out later this August. A sister ship to first-ever expedition ship, Octantis, the Polaris is also a Polar Class 6 ship designed for Antarctica expeditions. It's outfitted with the same plush amenities, like the Nordic Spa, which features a sauna, steam room, pool, and warming cave. In addition to Antartica, the ship is also slated for voyages through Patagonia, Canada, and the Great Lakes.

Also at the ever-expanding brand are three new notable river ships launching this summer: Viking Mississippi , calling upon U.S. ports like St. Louis, New Orleans, and Memphis; Viking Saigon , purpose-built for Vietnam’s Mekong River; and the 82-guest Viking Osiris , which just debuted on the Nile River in Egypt.

One of the most luxurious expedition ships will debut this year when Silversea Cruises' Silver Endeavour launches its first polar season in November. The boutique ship holds just 200 passengers and is set to undertake 12 voyages to Antarctica from November 21, 2022.

The voyages will range from five to 20 days long, and include a new 10-day Antarctic Peninsula voyage, as well as several of Silversea's Antarctic Bridge Fly-Cruise sailings—which enables passengers to skip the often-tumultuous Drake Passage and fly directly to King George Island to embark the ship.

The ship itself, which was recently acquired from now-defunct line Crystal Cruises and was slightly altered by Silversea, has opulent design features and offers some of the most spacious accommodations in expedition cruising. Among the most lavish suites are the 1,868-square-foot Owner's Suite and the 1,668-square-foot Grand Suite. But no matter the accommodation, guests are sure to have personalized attention, as the passenger-to-crew ratio is 1:1. Silver Endeavour also has industry-leading expert-to-guest and Zodiac boat-to-guest ratios, ensuring that every passenger will have easy access to heart-pounding excursions and get up close to marine life like penguins, seals, and other bird species.

Hurtigruten

Much of the cruise industry has been abuzz with anticipation over Hurtigruten's new West Africa itineraries, which were first announced last summer. The expedition voyages will begin departing Dakar, Senegal , in November 2022 and will visit the volcanic islands of Cape Verde, as well as the Bissagos Islands. The latter archipelago of 88 islands is said to be one of the most untouched destinations in the world—and teeming with wildlife. During the four days exploring the islands, travelers can expect to spot the likes of hippos, dolphins, sea turtles, crocodiles, manatees, and 500 different bird species. Additionally, the itinerary includes a few city stops: one to Banjul, the capital city of the Gambia, and a day spent touring Dakar.

The new voyages will be aboard the MS Spitsbergen , which Hurtigruten says is one of its most popular ships. It's fitted with Scandinavian touches, like sleek design elements and an onboard sauna, as well as a fully staffed expedition team that offers daily lectures.

Boutique river cruise line Uniworld is bringing its newest ship, Mekong Jewel , to its namesake waterway for 13-day voyages through Vietnam and Cambodia. The itineraries begin sailing in September 2022 with stops including Ho Chi Minh City and the villages of Tien Loi, Vinh Long, and Sa Dec in Vietnam, and Cambodia's Phnom Penh and the ancient temples of Angkor Wat.

The all-suite Mekong Jewel has a capacity of just 68 guests and 51 staff. Each stateroom has a balcony and marble bathroom. The ship is also outfitted with two restaurants, a swimming pool, spa, sauna and steam room, gym, hair salon, nail bar, two lounges, and a library.

MSC Cruises

With two new cruise ships coming later this year, there's no shortage of exciting sailings at MSC. In December, MSC Seascape will launch inaugural roundtrip voyages from Miami through the Caribbean and Bahamas. 

But the real showstopper for the line will be MSC World Europa. Designed to be futuristic in every sense of the word, World Europa will be decked out with features like a Y-shaped aft for striking panoramic sea views, engines that run on liquid natural gas, and separate “districts” for children and adults to relax. When it debuts in November, World Europa will be based in Doha, Qatar, for the FIFA World Cup, and then set out for seven-night voyages through the Middle East in December. Stops include Dubai , Abu Dhabi, the UAE island of Sir Bani Yas, and the Al Ahsa Oasis in Saudi Arabia .

When the much-anticipated Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection launches its first-ever ship, Evrima , it will be a treat for cruise enthusiasts and sailing newbies alike. As the line's name suggests, the atmosphere aboard the vessel is meant to feel closer to that on a chartered superyacht rather than a cruise ship, with intimate restaurants, a cigar-and-cognac bar, two infinity pools, and even a marina at the ship's lower aft that offers “sun loungers, water toys, and seamless entry into the sea.” 

Every suite has its own terrace and a minibar provisioned to the guest's preferences. What's more: Each passenger is assigned their own personal concierge who take care of every detail of their voyage, from booking reservations at the ship's specialty restaurants to organizing shore excursions and fulfilling other requests.

Evrima 's first sailing embarks in October 2022, with seven-night itineraries from Barcelona that visit Palma de Mallorca, as well as Saint-Tropez and Nice in France. And don't forget, you can also book a voyage using Marriott Bonvoy points .

Regent Seven Seas

When Regent Seven Seas does a “Grand Voyage”—or an itinerary that stretches several months for a complete tour of one region in the world—the line does it with its signature panache. Case and point: the 70-night Grand Spice Route Quest, which is an epic itinerary through Asia and northern Africa. Among the ports of call are overnight stays in Bali, Singapore, Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh, and Bangkok. Stops in New Zealand, Indonesia, and Egypt, and Greece are also among the highlights. 

It all takes place aboard the Seven Seas Explorer , one of the most lavish cruise ships on Earth. There's the $7 million onboard art collection featuring Picassos, as well as specialty dining, like Asian-fusion spot Pacific Rim that offers delicacies like Peking duck and watermelon salad, chicken and foie gras gyoza, Korean barbecue lamb chops, and miso black cod.

The Grand Spice Route Quest itinerary has proved so popular, the line just opened up bookings for voyages in 2025—and those are sure to sell out soon.

It doesn’t get more relaxing than sailing to some of the most remote tropical islands in the world. And that’s exactly what’s on the docket for a new 16-day voyage from Ponant that weaves between the Seychelles, through the Maldives, and ends in Sri Lanka. Travelers on board the 184-passenger expedition ship, Le Jacques-Cartier , are in for a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, as the boutique vessel explores the Seychelles archipelago, calling upon the bird sanctuaries at the Aride Island Nature Reserve and the secluded, clear waters of Anse Source d’Argent beach. It’s then on to the Rasdhoo and Baa atolls in the Maldives, home to a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with colorful reefs, turtles, and tropical fish. The dreamy itinerary ends with several stops in Sri Lanka, showing off the country’s beaches, nature, and city life. Although not sailing until January 2024, this itinerary just recently went on sale and is sure to book up soon.

The 7 most anticipated new cruise ships of 2022

Cruise lines may have canceled many of their sailings over the past two years due to the coronavirus pandemic . But they didn't cancel orders for new ships.

As 2022 begins, major cruise operators such as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line are moving forward with plans to unveil more than 20 new oceangoing vessels during the year. That's a big number in the cruise world — on par with the years before the pandemic.

The new ships are coming even as many lines have yet to resume sailings with all the vessels in their existing fleets.

In some cases, the new ships will be arriving months behind schedule due to pandemic-related construction delays at the shipyards that are building them. Thanks to such delays, the arrival of a few ships that had been scheduled for delivery in 2022 will be pushed to 2023.

But it'll be a big year for new cruise ships nevertheless.

Among the most notable newcomers will be Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas , the biggest cruise ship ever built (and by big, we're talking about a ship that can hold nearly 7,000 passengers). Originally set to debut in 2021, it's now scheduled to begin sailing in March .

There also will be major new ships coming from Norwegian Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and Disney Cruise Line . The latter, notably, hasn't had a new vessel debut in 10 years.

In all cases, the new ships that are on the way already are available for booking — and, indeed, booking up fast. Cruise fans always love to be on the latest and greatest.

Here, a list of the seven new ships arriving in 2022 we're most excited about:

Viking Octantis (Viking)

Maiden voyage: Jan. 12

Fast-growing Viking has rolled out more than 70 new river cruise ships and oceangoing vessels since its founding in 1997. But there's never been one like this.

Designed to hold just 378 passengers, Viking Octantis is the line's first "expedition" cruise ship — a type of cruise ship specifically designed to take travelers to the most off-the-beaten-path parts of the world, including Antarctica and the Arctic.

As is typical for expedition ships, it's a tough vessel , with a reinforced bow that lets it bump through ice in polar regions and extra tanks for fuel and food. It also has its own landing craft on board to bring people ashore in remote locations as well as kayaks and even submarines for exploring (the latter being something that is relatively rare on cruise vessels of any type).

Like other expedition ships, Viking Octantis also sails with a large and seasoned "expedition team" that includes biologists, botanists, geologists, glaciologists and ornithologists who lecture regularly.

But there are several new and unusual features to Viking Octantis, too. Most notable is The Hangar, an enclosed marina that allows passengers to transfer to the ship's Zodiac landing craft while still in the protected interior of the ship. It's a first for an expedition cruise ship.

Viking Octantis also is upscale. Like all of Viking's vessels, it has an elegant Scandinavian design. Its restaurants include a version of Viking's signature Italian spot, Manfredi's, and the Scandinavian-inspired Mamsen's outlet. Also familiar is a top-of-the-ship, glass-walled Explorers' Lounge promising stunning views of passing scenery.

In another first for polar expedition cruise vessels, every cabin on the vessel has floor-to-ceiling glass walls that slide partially open from the top to create a balcony-like feel.

The details: Viking Octantis debuted in January with sailings to Antarctica out of Ushuaia, Argentina and is repositioning to the Great Lakes for the summer. Wonder of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)

Maiden voyage: March 4

Royal Caribbean is going big again with its next ship — really big. The latest in the line's groundbreaking Oasis Class of vessels , Wonder of the Seas will measure 236,857 tons, making it the biggest cruise ship ever built.

That's about 4% bigger than the current size leader in the cruise world, which also is part of Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class: The 3-year-old Symphony of the Seas .

Wonder of the Seas will be similar to Symphony of the Seas and three earlier Oasis Class vessels with a few new twists that will contribute to its bigger size, including a dedicated suite area with a private lounge, restaurant and sun deck. Like the four earlier Oasis Class ships, it will be 18 decks high and nearly 1,200 feet long — the equivalent of more than three football fields.

Royal Caribbean's first Oasis Class ship, Oasis of the Seas, debuted in 2009. The line added additional Oasis Class vessels in 2010, 2016 and 2018. Each of the ships has been a little bigger than the last, and they're all more than 20% bigger than any other cruise vessels afloat.

Like the earlier Oasis Class ships, Wonder of the Seas will offer multiple main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course, a basketball court and even a zip line. And that's just on its top deck. Inside the vessel, you'll find more lounges, bars, restaurants and shops than you can imagine, plus a huge casino, spas and theaters with real Broadway shows.

As with earlier Royal Caribbean ships, it'll even have an indoor ice-skating rink.

The details: Wonder of the Seas initially will be based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for sailings to the Caribbean, before moving to the Mediterranean for the summer. Evrima (The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection)

Maiden voyage: May 6

We feel like a broken record on this one, as we placed it on our list of the most anticipated new cruise ships of 2020 (the year it originally was scheduled to debut) and then shouted it out again on our list of the most anticipated new ships of 2021 . But after a seemingly never-ending series of delays blamed first on shipyard troubles and then on the COVID-19 pandemic, the very first ship from startup line The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection , the new luxury cruise division of The Ritz-Carlton , failed to debut during either year.

Now the line is adamant that it is truly coming in May. If it does (and we're sure hoping so), it'll be a notable event in the cruise world, marking the entry of one of the luxury hotel world's most famous brands into cruising.

Holding just 298 passengers, Evrima will be a small, yacht-like vessel with an elegant, residential look (as you might expect for Ritz-Carlton). Standout features will include spacious cabins, a stylish spa and lots of deck-top lounge space for sunning, plus five separate restaurants including an à la carte venue designed by Sven Elverfeld of the three Michelin-starred Aqua at The Ritz-Carlton, Wolfsburg, Germany .

Fans of Ritz-Carlton, for sure, are excited about the new vessel.

The details: After a series of five delays that have resulted in the cancellation of more than two years worth of cruises, Evrima now is scheduled to debut in May in Europe before repositioning to the Caribbean for the winter. Disney Wish (Disney Cruise Line)

Maiden voyage: July 14

It's been a long time coming. But Disney Cruise Line finally is coming out with a new ship this year — its first in 10 years.

At 140,000-tons, Disney Wish will just be a tad bigger than Disney's last two new ships (Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy). But it'll have a whole new array of trademark Disney wow on board, from a Star Wars-themed "hyperspace lounge" that offers a "window" view of passing starships to Marvel- and "Frozen"-themed restaurants.

Cabins on the ship will include seven oceanview rooms located over the bridge — a first for Disney Cruise Line. These rooms will have an extended living area with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bow and out across the ocean. And if all that isn't enough, there will be four Royal Suites with a Sleeping Beauty theme — two of which feature an insane two-story floorplan.

Among other notable features will be a reimagined Oceaneers Club (the area for kids 3 to 12 on Disney ships) where children can enter via a "magical slide." The Oceaneers Club also will offer a Marvel Super Hero Academy where kids can design (and virtually fly) in their own super suit. The club also will house Rapunzel's Art Studio, Belle's Library and Anna and Elsa's Sommerhus where there will be a variety of mini-games with Olaf serving as the host.

Disney Wish is just the first of three new "Triton Class" ships that Disney Cruise Line has on order for delivery over the next few years — an expansion that will nearly double its size when measured by passenger capacity.

Seabourn Venture (Seabourn)

Maiden voyage: July 15

Viking isn't the only major line getting into expedition cruising in 2022. So is Seabourn. Seabourn Venture will be the 33-year-old luxury line's very first expedition ship.

Like Viking Octantis, Seabourn Venture will be a hardy vessel specifically built to travel to some of the world's most remote places, including Antarctica and the Arctic. Indeed, it's scheduled to spend much of its time each year in the polar regions, while also offering sailings to such off-the-beaten-path, warm weather places as the Amazon.

Designed to carry just 264 passengers, it'll be a ship loaded with outdoor equipment for off-ship adventure, including kayaks and bikes. It'll also boast a staggering 24 Zodiac boats for waterborne exploring and landings in remote areas — enough to get every passenger off the ship at the same time (something that isn't always the case with expedition ships). And it'll be home to 26 expedition guides including scientists, historians and naturalists who will lecture regularly on board and lead guided tours on land.

But perhaps Seabourn Venture's standout adventure feature will be its two six-person submarines. As on Viking Octantis, passengers on Seabourn Venture will be able to explore the world under the water in polar regions as well as what's above the waterline.

The ship also will have a high-definition Cineplex camera that can pick up wildlife like a polar bear up to 4 miles away, streaming the footage into the Discovery Center while leaving the wildlife undisturbed.

On the luxury side of things, every room on Seabourn Venture will be a suite and have its own balcony — something that often isn't the case with expedition ships. And the ship's restaurants will serve elegant cuisine crafted in part by leading American chef Thomas Keller.

Norwegian Prima (Norwegian Cruise Line)

Maiden voyage: Aug. 17

For the first time in nearly 10 years, Norwegian Cruise Line is getting an entirely new class of ships. Under development since 2017, Norwegian Prima will be the first of six sister vessels scheduled to debut between 2022 and 2027 that collectively will be known as the Prima Class.

At 142,500 tons, Norwegian Prima will be notably smaller than the vessels the line has been adding in recent years, such as the 2-year-old, 169,116-ton Norwegian Encore — a factor that will allow it to access smaller ports around the world. But Norwegian Prima still will pack a lot of over-the-top amenities, including a go-kart track that spreads over three decks (a cruise industry first).

The ship also will boast The Drop, a 10-story dry slide that the line says will provide more G-force than an accelerating F1 racecar. Additionally, the vessel will be home to a three-deck theater that converts into a Las Vegas-style nightclub, and a list of interactive real-life gameshows, including at-sea versions of "The Price Is Right," "Supermarket Sweep," "Press Your Luck" and "Beat the Clock."

But Norwegian Prima will be about more than flashy entertainment and activities. It'll also mark a more upscale turn for the line. Norwegian says Norwegian Prima will offer the largest variety of suite categories (13) for a large ocean ship as well as the largest three-bedroom suites of any new cruise vessels as well as the brand's largest-ever inside, oceanview and balcony cabins.

Norwegian also says Norwegian Prima will offer the most outdoor deck space of any new cruise ship including more total pool deck space than any other ship in the brand's fleet.

The details: Norwegian Prima initially will sail in Northern Europe during the summer before repositioning to North America in the fall. MSC World Europa (MSC Cruises)

Maiden voyage: Dec. 20

It won't be quite the world's biggest cruise ship, though it will be close. At around 205,000 tons, MSC World Europa will be nearly as big as Royal Caribbean's record-size Oasis Class vessels, including the aforementioned Wonder of the Seas.

By one measure, it'll be even bigger. MSC World Europa will be 21 decks high — three decks higher than the Oasis Class ships. But it'll be less long and less wide than the Oasis Class ships, leaving it about 10% smaller in overall size.

Like the Oasis Class ships, MSC World Europa will be able to hold nearly 7,000 passengers with all berths filled — 6,762 to be exact.

As for its onboard offerings, MSC Cruises is taking a page from Royal Caribbean's playbook by breaking down the public areas of MSC World Europa into districts. They will include an adults-only "Zen district" and a separate "family district" that houses as many as 10 new kids facilities. There also will be a central interior promenade with entertainment, shops and bars.

In addition, MSC World Europa will have six pools and 14 hot tubs, making it one of the most pool-covered ships at sea. The watery offerings will include an Aquapark with multiple waterslides that will integrate virtual reality technology. There also will be a family sundeck.

MSC World Europa also will have 13 dining venues, including the new-for-the-line Chef's Garden Kitchen (an outlet focused on microgreens) and La Pescaderia, a traditional seafood grill with alfresco seating. In a twist, the ship will have three separate buffet restaurants as well, each with its own ambiance.

Drinking spots will include an English-style pub serving beer made on board as well as a new gin bar concept, a first for MSC Cruises. Dubbed Masters of the Sea Pub, it'll span two decks.

The details: MSC World Europa initially will sail in the Persian Gulf out of Dubai before repositioning to the Mediterranean for the summer of 2023. Other newcomers

In addition to the above, newcomers for 2022 also include several more small expedition ships and other small vessels from such cruise operators as Silversea Cruises , Emerald Cruises and Atlas Ocean Voyages. There also are two new ships debuting for start-up line Virgin Voyages and new ships coming for Princess Cruises , Carnival Cruise Line and Celebrity Cruises — all sisters to previously unveiled vessels.

Viking also has several other new ships debuting in addition to Viking Octantis.

The show is created, directed and choreographed by Danny Teeson, who is known for his work on "American Idol". The cruise industry is back! And for many people, this is outstanding news. Lots of families make an annual cruise part of their traditions and many in search of a couples escape have found luxury cruises the perfect solution. If you’re considering booking a luxury cruise, why not go with the best and newest ships the industry has to offer? Our correspondent Julie Chang Murphy shares a roundup of the best new luxury cruise ships launching in 2022, including romantic and family vacations from Disney, Norwegian and more.

Cruise ships are sailing again and despite the hassles and restrictions, there is much to be excited about. 2022 marks the debut of several hotly anticipated cruise ships and itineraries . Whether you’ve never been on the open sea or are a seasoned cruiser, these luxury liners and enticing voyages and amenities will have you reconsidering your future travel plans.

But don’t daydream for too long! According to our friends at Cruise Critic, “almost all cruise lines are voluntarily operating at less than full capacity with some still operating at less than 50%.” This might not be ideal for the cruise industry, of course. But, from a passenger perspective, not having to wait in lines or compete for reservations is perhaps the ultimate luxury.

Here are 6 wonders of the sea that will be embarking on their maiden voyage this year and early next year.

6 best new luxury cruise ships launching in 2022

1. ritz-carlton yacht collection, evrima.

Is it a cruise ship? Is it a yacht? No, it’s a superyacht. Though its eagerly anticipated launch has been postponed multiple times, the Evrima is now scheduled to set sail on October 15, 2022 from Barcelona, Spain. The 298-passenger yacht will be as much of a destination in and of itself as the ports it visits. Think small, off-the-beaten-path enclaves like Mayreau in the Caribbean or France’s Saint-Malo, and popular European destinations like Barcelona and Copenhagen. A Concierge Ashore program ensures immersive experiences at each port with customized private tours to your specifications.

On board, discerning travelers accustomed to the residential spaces and personalized service of the Ritz-Carlton land-based resorts will feel right at home. Each passenger is assigned their own personal concierge and every suite has its own terrace and a minibar provisioned to the guest’s preferences. 2. MSC World Europa

Setting sail in December with voyages based in the Middle East, World Europa is MSC’s newest addition and the largest ship in their fleet. Powered by cleaner fuel, and with green technology integrated throughout the ship, it ushers in a new standard for the cruising industry and a commitment to the future of the planet.

But the innovation and futuristic sensibilities do not end there. A unique Y-Shaped open aft leads to a 104m long promenade, with incredible panoramic ocean views as well as a state-of-the-art, longest dry slide at sea (11 decks high). The ship will also be introducing the concept of “districts” – distinct areas on the ship catering for different cruising types. Adults and couples will appreciate tranquil zen zones to a lively partially open promenade with entertainment, bars, shops and luxury boutiques. A family zone will house all the kids facilities (and boisterous screaming).

3. Atlas Ocean Voyages World Traveller

This game-changing cruise line, while luxurious, is notable in its devotion to exploration. The World Traveller arrives on the heels of 2021’s environmentally sensitive, ice-class, World Navigator. Set to launch in November to Antarctica, the elegant vessel can accommodate 196-passenger and has a silent propulsion system which allows the ship to operate in sensitive marine environments and affords better wildlife viewing. The ship is also equipped with a GPS positioning system that allows it to maintain position without needing to drop anchor so that it can reach   the world’s most remote ports.

On board, the design is a soothing mix of classic and contemporary styles with a touch of Art Deco. Restaurants feature regionally-inspired gourmet cuisine. 4. Virgin Voyages Valiant Lady

Think of Sir Richard Branson’s buzz-worthy adults-only cruise ushers as the coolest ship in the harbor. From replacing buffets with modern food hall-style eatery spaces of individual vendors to the tattoo parlor and a resident sexologist – it’s a new age in cruising. Impromptu performances go on throughout the vessel (which has plenty of nooks and crannies) to elicit surprise and serendipity throughout your trip.

There’s also an emphasis on wellness so you can recover from all the partying. Practice your salutations at sunrise yoga or lace up the gloves for outdoor boxing. The award-winning Redemption Spa which describes itself as “a cross between a week spent in Bali and 2 hours at a cafe in Amsterdam,” offers a mudroom, sauna cleanse, hot stone massages, seaweed wraps and more.

Choose from voyages that offer a marvelous mix of the Mediterranean from Marseille to Sardinia, with overnights in Cannes and Ibiza or a Caribbean tour. In 2023, set sail for Cozumel, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, plus The Beach Club at Bimini.

5. Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Prima

NCL’s eagerly anticipated 3,100 passenger ship, Norwegian Prima , does not disappoint, bringing sophistication and elegance to every part of the cruise experience. With sculptural interiors and layouts inspired by the great piazzas of the world, there is a feeling that you’re immersed in an art installation. In additon, the Norwegian Prima was built with a higher ratio of space to passengers in mind as well as a higher crew-to-passenger ratio than many Norwegian ships. All of which is to say –this is an upscale cruise.

But, it’s far from stuffy. Lively entertainment options abound from a real Broadway show (the Tony Award-nominated “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical”) in a theater that converts late at night into a dance club. Also on deck: a pickleball court, mini golf course, two giant dry-slides that plunge from the top of the ship to the promenade deck, and even a go-kart track.

Noteworthy journeys include transatlantic cruises from New York to Novia Scotia to Iceland and Barcelona to Bermuda to New York. If you’re eyeing the Caribbean, consider the 7-day cruise in December that takes you from Orlando through. Cozumel, Jamaica and Grand Cayman.

6. Disney Cruise Line Disney Wish

It’s been a decade since Disney debuted a new cruise ship, so expectations were high for the fifth vessel in their fleet. Disney Wish is the largest in Disney’s fleet, and embodies all of the enchantment and marvel one could imagine. The Grand Hall is the heart of the ship, and the gateway to fairytale and action-packed worlds. This is sure to wow kids and their grown-ups alike.

Some new bells and whistles include a Star Wars themed lounge, Marvel and Frozen dining adventures, and for some lucky families, two-story Sleeping Beauty themed suites. The Oceaneers Club has been reimagined for kids ages 3 to 12. It has a Marvel Super Hero Academy where kids can design (and virtually fly) in their own super suit. The club also features Rapunzel’s Art Studio, Belle’s Library and Anna and Elsa’s Sommerhus where Olaf will host games and activities.

I've been on 6 cruise ships — here's how they compare and the one I would recommend

• Since 2021, I've spent at least one night on six ships, all with different cruise lines.
• These companies, including Margaritaville and Royal Caribbean, target a variety of demographics.
• Here's how all six cruise ships compared — and the one I would go on again.

Throughout the past two years, I've spent at least one night on six ships, all with different cruise lines. While they've all varied in prices and target demographics, one has stood out as my clear favorite.

By no means do I love cruises — the shows can be tacky, the food can be mediocre, and I'm easily bored. If I weren't a travel reporter, I'd probably never board these floating resorts. But duty calls, and since 2021 I've been invited to several nonrevenue media sailings or overnighters with cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, Oceania, and Norwegian.

While I've been unsurprisingly critical of some cruise ships, others have won me over. Let's take a closer look at the six ships I've been on and the one I'd recommend.

Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Apex: trendy but boring

In late 2021, I boarded the new $1 billion Celebrity Apex for its two-night naming ceremony. At the time, I hadn't been on a cruise in more than 10 years. (As a kid with parents who liked cruises, I remember disliking them.)

The Apex wasn't designed for "zillennials" like me. Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, the cruise line's former CEO, told Insider at the time that Celebrity targeted Gen X customers . Despite this disconnect, the Apex had some of the best-designed and -decorated spaces I've seen on a ship.

Places such as Eden (a restaurant, bar, and entertainment venue) were attractive and trendy, while the Rooftop Garden looked just the way its name promised. Even the outdoor lounges and frequently overlooked atrium were more exciting than most ships' — the latter had a martini bar that sat under the glow of an LED chandelier.

While my 243-square-foot Infinite Veranda stateroom had some dull decor, the natural light from the large wall of windows made my tiny cabin feel large.

Where these spaces shined, the dining didn't: I wasn't wowed by any of my meals, including my dinner at Le Petit Chef . Here, overhead projectors displayed an animated storyline on the dining table. But this gimmick wasn't enough to overshadow the disappointingly mediocre food.

Ultimately, I faced the same dilemma I remembered as a child: boredom. While the theater was grand, I wasn't wowed by the nighttime show. And as I said at the time, I could wade around the pool only so many times and eat and drink so much. While I loved the design of spaces such as the Magic Carpet, an outdoor extension that moves vertically between decks, I couldn't spend all day staring at it.

If I were here on a weeklong vacation, I'd be twiddling my thumbs by day three.

Norwegian Cruise Line's Norwegian Prima: fun with a great food hall

In October 2022, I was invited on the four-night inaugural sailing for the $1.1 billion Norwegian Prima . It was the first time I had ever enjoyed being on a cruise.

Four nights is long for a cynic like me. But to my surprise, I was consistently entertained by the Prima's long list of amenities , including modern dartboards, a VR arcade, a mini-golf course, and a thrilling free-fall dry slide. These activities — along with the outdoor game court and go-kart track — could've kept me entertained for another day or two at sea.

My 230-square-foot balcony stateroom was also well-designed and modern: I appreciated the roomy bathroom, storage options, and contemporary feel. But the bedding was mediocre, the balcony was tiny, and the "mural" behind the bed and couch was a tacky eyesore.

On the plus side, the Prima had my favorite dining venue of all six ships: an 11-restaurant food hall with tableside tablet ordering systems. Instead of going to a buffet to pick at heat-lamp-fresh leftovers, this concept gave hungry travelers such as me a convenient way to try Indian curries and Singaporean-inspired noodles in one sitting.

But the greatest shock of all was the enjoyable nighttime entertainment, specifically Norwegian's rendition of the Broadway-approved "Summer: The Donna Summer Musical" and "The Price Is Right Live." I found myself giggling throughout the latter.

This, combined with the fun activities and food options, made sailing on the Prima an entertaining experience that I would consider booking again.

Royal Caribbean International's Wonder of the Seas: overstimulating and packed with activities

After boarding the Wonder of the Seas in December 2022, I think Royal Caribbean's big bet on mega cruise ships is paying off. My two-night sailing on the world's biggest cruise ship just wasn't enough time to test all of the ship's amenities.

At its massive size, there was plenty of room for "neighborhoods," such as a boardwalk, a park, an outdoor entertainment center with activities such as a zipline, and a colorful pool deck with water slides. Several of these spaces looked more like those of an amusement park than a cruise liner.

The list of Wonder of the Seas' amenities , which included some I'd never seen on a ship before, seemed endless. If it managed to overwhelm me for two nights, I'm sure it'd keep any family booked and busy.

From an ice-skating show to an exhilarating outdoor swim, dive, and dance performance, the entertainment options were also diverse. The former was a bore — I left early. But the dramatics and coordination of the latter made it the most impressive cruise-ship show I've ever seen.

Onto the negatives — to start, the food quality wasn't consistent. While my buffet and dinner meals at Hooked Seafood were satisfactory, the dry and flavorless fried chicken at the new-to-brand Mason Jar was disappointing.

My balcony stateroom was also a massive letdown. Sure, it had all the essentials , large storage units, and a clothesline in the shower. But the bathroom wouldn't be comfortable for two people, water splashed out of the sink basin whenever I washed my hands, and the bland decor was a stark contrast from the sensory overload of the rest of the ship. The stateroom looked more utilitarian than it did fun.

Margaritaville at Sea's Paradise: cheap and quick

The Margaritaville empire's nascent cruise line exclusively operates two-night round-trip sailings like clockwork from Palm Beach, Florida, to Freeport, Bahamas. It's a great cruise for budget travelers — most of these dates can be booked for well under $200 a person, including some at $50.

But Margaritaville at Sea's attraction ends at its eye-catching fares. When I attended the ship's one-night inaugural sailing in May 2022, I realized travelers get what they pay for: a very old ship. Before it adopted Jimmy Buffetts' branding , Margaritaville at Sea was the budget operator Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, and the Paradise was its 30-year-old flagship Grand Classica vessel.

Sure, the vessel had some references to Buffett in the names of its venues, signage, and wall art. But besides that and a handful of new decor (shown above), it didn't seem as if the ship had undergone a massive cosmetic overhaul to align with the Margaritaville brand.

Instead, the Paradise looked out of style and place compared with other properties in the hospitality giant's portfolio. And when I tried to use the public restroom on the pool deck, the flush almost fell off its mount.

Similarly, instead of an immersive Margaritaville accommodation with beach-cottage-like decor, my 176-square-foot oceanview stateroom was bare and looked as old as the original song. While functional, the dark lines in my bathroom shower looked dirty, while the yellowish walls and wood accents made my cabin feel outdated and unkempt.

On the plus side, my meal at JWB Prime Steakhouse might have been one of the best steakhouse dinners I've ever had. But guests have to pay extra to eat there.

The cruise line has since spent millions of dollars updating areas such as the staterooms and adding amenities such as a pickleball court. I haven't boarded the ship since this refresh. But my first experience has left me so cynical that I don't plan on giving it a second try. I'm not sure a few million dollars is enough to fix its " Spirit Airlines of the Sea " reputation.

Explora Journeys' Explora I: luxurious, expensive, and boring

MSC Group's new Explora Journeys is a growing luxury-cruise brand you probably haven't heard of. I spent one night on its first $560 million Explora I ship in October while it was docked in New York City, and I think the new brand made a great first attempt at breaking into the luxury market.

While my ocean terrace suite was the smallest cabin on the ship, it was more luxurious than any hotel I've paid for. My cabin's walk-in closet, welcome bottle of Veuve Clicquot, Dyson hairdryer, and balcony daybed won me over. But the cheapest itinerary in 2024 comes out to $500 a day per person — it's up to you if you think these little luxuries justify this steep price.

Like the Wonder of the Seas, there were spaces aboard the ship that looked nothing like an average cruise vessel. Instead of a typical atrium, upscale stores such as Rolex and Cartier surrounded what looked like a hotel bar. And instead of a large central pool deck, the Explora I had four smaller pools, including an infinity pool and one under a retractable glass roof.

At its price, it's fair to expect luxury food. The thinly sliced wagyu at the pan-Asian Sakura was one of the best dishes I've had on a ship. But I preferred my own baked miso cod to the one I was served.

Luckily, the ship didn't have any splashy "production-style shows" for me to turn my nose up at. But once again, I'm not sure how much time I can spend in the spa or at the outdoor gym before I'm bored. So, while I appreciated the rows of cabanas and modern lounges, I think a weeklong vacation on the Explora I would be too quiet for me.

Oceania Cruises' Vista: upscale but boring

In late September, I spent one night on Oceania Cruises' Vista while it was docked in New York City. I think the new ship is a great option for mature travelers who are interested in higher-end cruises but don't want to pay for the likes of Regent Seven Seas.

For a food-focused cruise line, my dinner in the Grand Dining Room had luxurious options such as monkfish and caviar. But in retrospect, it was memorable only because of the ingredients, not the taste. Unfortunately, my lobster didn't beat the comforts of Norwegian Prima's food hall or the wagyu from Explora.

Appropriately for a premium cruise ship, my veranda stateroom was lined with one of the largest balconies I've ever had. And small details such as designated cup holders in the bathroom, a complimentary beverage station, and Bulgari toiletries made it stand out from any veranda cabin on a mass-market cruise ship.

Like my accommodations, the Vista's common spaces, such as the library lounge, had an upscale flair. Even the circular daybed-lined pool deck was more elevated and modern than the typical cruise-ship pool surrounded by generic lounge chairs. And while there were no water slides or arcades, there was a large putting green and walking track.

Unsurprisingly, I did not enjoy the cringy "Headliners'' evening song-and-dance show. And because I had limited time on the ship, I didn't get to experience activities such as cooking or art classes. This might have made a difference — but in the end, I again found the ship to be too calm for my liking.

The verdict: Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas is my favorite

While I appreciated the upscale qualities of Explora and Oceania's vessels, I couldn't imagine spending more than three days on either ship. Similarly, while Margaritaville at Sea Paradise's cheap costs are enticing, I don't plan to sail on it again.

My favorite cruise liners are the ones with engaging activities and creative spaces that don't look like those of a typical ship. The Wonder of the Seas executed all of this — more than the Norwegian Prima — perfectly, enough to make me overlook the sore spots of my stateroom and mediocre meal. Because of this, it's the one ship I'll continue recommending to most cruise fans.

But that doesn't mean it has to be your favorite. If your priority is a cheap, quick-and-dirty getaway, Margaritaville at Sea Paradise is great. If you want something luxurious but don't want to spend too much, try the Oceania Vista — or the Explora I if you really want to ball out. And if you're traveling with children, Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas and the Norwegian Prima are great options. The latter two are the only ones I'd consider booking again.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Orders 8 New Ships for 3 Brands from Fincantieri

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings today unveiled the most comprehensive newbuild order in its history—a total of eight vessels, representing nearly 25,000 additional berths, with new classes of ships for each of its three brands—and the construction of a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the company’s private island destination in the Bahamas and its top-rated Caribbean port of call, according to a press release.

The new ship orders across all three brands are scheduled for delivery over a ten-year period, between 2026 and 2036.

Following the delivery of four Prima-Plus class ships from 2025 through 2028, Norwegian Cruise Line is expected to take delivery of four approximately 200,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of nearly 5,000 guests, in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036, which are subject to financing.

Building on the success of its Allura Class ships, the last one being delivered in 2025, Oceania Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 86,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 1,450 guests in 2027 and 2029.

Lastly, following the Explorer Class ships, Regent Seven Seas Cruises is scheduled to take delivery of two 77,000-gross-ton ships, each with a capacity of 850 guests, in 2026 and 2029.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth. It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet,” said Harry Sommer, president and chief executive officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round.”

In partnership with the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri , each brand will design their new ship class and focus on creating the largest, most efficient, and innovative vessels of their respective fleet.

“Over the years, our long-standing relationship with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings has been rooted in a shared vision for the future of maritime travel, consistently setting new standards for innovation, luxury, sustainability, and guest satisfaction in the cruise industry,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director at Fincantieri. “We are thrilled to work on these new build orders and deliver emblematic cruise ships that will embody our shared legacy of excellence for generations to come.”

Mark A. Kempa, chief financial officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, commented: “we expect that these strategic investments will secure our growth trajectory, significantly boost our earnings profile, and enhance shareholder value well into the future. With a favorable payment structure that includes pre-delivery financing and modest initial installment payments for these ship orders, we still anticipate strong Net Leverage reduction of 1.5 turns by the end of 2024, relative to 2023, and expect the Company to continue reducing Net Leverage each year for the foreseeable future.”

The parent company to Norwegian Cruise Line announced Monday a major order for eight new ships among its three brands as well as the construction of a pier to allow its cruise ships to dock instead of tender to its private Bahamas island for the first time.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings said it was planning to bring on four new ships for NCL, two new ships for upper premium brand Oceania Cruises and two ships for luxury brand Regent Seven Seas, all to be built at Fincantieri shipyard in Italy and debut during a 10-year run from 2026-2036.

The NCL ships would be the largest ever built for the line at around 200,000 gross tons and capacity of about 5,000 guests. They won’t arrive until after the final delivery of its Prima-Plus class ships expected between 2025-2028, the larger sister ships to the Norwegian Prima and Viva that debuted in the last couple of years. The four ships from the unnamed class of vessel would arrive in 2030, 2032, 2034 and 2036.

The new class for Oceania Cruises, which in 2023 debuted its first new ship in more than a decade — the Oceania Allura — will also be the largest ever built for the line at 86,000 gross tons and a capacity of 1,450 guests. They’re expected in 2027 and 2029.

And the Regent Seven Seas fleet’s new vessels will also be larger coming in at 77,000 gross tons with a capacity of 850 guests. They’re expected in 2026 and 2029. Regent just debuted the third of its Explorer class ships in December 2023.

“This strategic new-ship order across all three of our award-winning brands provides for the steady introduction of cutting-edge vessels into our fleet and solidifies our long-term growth,” said NCLH president and CEO Harry Sommer in a press release. “It also allows us to significantly leverage our operating scale, strengthen our commitment to innovation and enhance our ability to offer our guests new products and experiences, all while providing opportunities to enhance the efficiency of our fleet.”

No other details about the ships were released. Financing is already in place to fund 80% of the cost for the four ships among the Oceania and Regent orders, but financing for the four NCL ships is not finalized.

The eight ships expects to add 25,000 more to the three cruise lines’ passenger capacity.

In addition, the line is set to construct a multi-ship pier at Great Stirrup Cay, the popular Bahamas private destination visited by all three brands. The move follows the introduction of a dock that can support two Oasis-class vessels at neighboring Perfect Day at Coco Cay for Royal Caribbean while other private Bahamas destinations including Disney’s Castaway Cay and its new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point feature tenderless docks for easy access.

“We are likewise excited with the addition of a new pier at Great Stirrup Cay to support our increased capacity in the Caribbean and multiple ships to call on the island, enhancing our guest experience and bringing seamless and reliable access to our private island year-round,” Sommer said.

On the Horizon: 6 New Cruise Ships Arriving in 2020

The cruise industry continues to flourish in the new decade, as 32 million people are expected to cruise in 2020. To accommodate the rising interest, 24 new ships are expected to enter service this year. Here is a look at some of the most anticipated ships coming our way.

1. Celebrity Apex

Debuting in April (and ahead of schedule!) will be the Celebrity Apex, carrying 2,910 guests. The 15 th ship of Celebrity’s fleet has been designed to erase the boundaries between inside and outside spaces. Catching your eye right away will be the Magic Carpet – a cantilevered floating platform that serves as a tendering platform, an open-air bar, and an alfresco specialty restaurant as it traverses up and down the side of the ship.

The entire Resort Deck will carry an outward-facing design, with a terraced pool deck, a two-deck outdoor jogging track, and oceanview cabanas. Perched on the top of the ship is the Rooftop garden, an outdoor space to chill, catch a movie, or dance under the stars. No matter where you are, you will be inspired by and connected to the sea.

This connection continues with the accommodations onboard. You’ll find Edge staterooms with Infinite Veranda that transforms into an open-air living space with a touch of a button. For the ultimate in pampering, there are six categories of suite accommodations with panoramic views and luxurious furnishings. Suite guests have exclusive access to the Retreat Lounge, The Retreat Sun Deck, and a specialty restaurant serving the creations of Michelin-starred chef Daniel Boulud.

You won’t go hungry with 29 world-class dining venues onboard, serving many types of cuisines. And yes, you’ll dine surrounded by large windows and endless ocean views.

The Celebrity Apex will spend her inaugural season in Europe, starting with sailings to the Norwegian Fjords, followed by a series of 10- and 11-night sailings in the Mediterranean.

2. Enchanted Princess

Arriving in June, the Enchanted Princess will be home to 3,660 guests and will continue to offer the signature Princess cruise experience with her own unique attractions.

Entertainment takes center stage with the headlining show Rock Opera, where high fashion meets rock music. This innovative production combines classic rock, opera and musical theater, featuring songs in English, Spanish, Latin, and for the first time – sign language. Jazz music fans will love Take 5, a theater delivering the cultural and musical history of jazz through live performances, dance lessons, and interactive workshops. Also onboard is the Phantom Bridge Escape Room, which will keep the entire family entertained as they solve their way out of a time-travel adventure.

In addition to dining favorites such as the Crown Grill and Sabatini’s, Enchanted Princess will also offer Bistro Sur La Mer, an authentic French bistro serving specialty dinners in a casual ambiance. For special occasions, book the Chefs Table Lumiere which includes a behind-the-scenes galley tour and a spectacular multi-course dinner.

Every stateroom will be furnished with the Princess Luxury Bed, designed with the latest research and technology for the ultimate in comfort. 3. Carnival Mardi Gras

In November, Carnival Cruise Lines will launch the Mardi Gras, named after the first ship to sail the waters with the Carnival name in 1972. This new Carnival fun ship promises to wow fans looking for an action-packed vacation at sea. The Mardi Gras will be home-based in Port Canaveral and offer seven-day cruises to the Caribbean.

The most anticipated zone on the Mardi Gras has to be the Ultimate Playground – which will be home to the WaterWorks aqua park with twisting water slides, splash zones, a 600-foot suspended ropes course, and the first roller coaster at sea. Yes, you read that right! On an 800-foot track, BOLT will whisk you 187 feet above the air, around Carnival’s signature red funnel, traveling up to 40 miles per hour if you want it – as its speed will be controlled by a foot pedal inside each car.

The ship’s public areas will incorporate six themed zones offering a variety of entertainment and dining venues. The heartbeat of the ship will be Grand Central, a light-filled atrium that is home to specialty restaurants, relaxing bars, and lounges.

Mosey over to the French Quarter, where you’ll find bites and beverages, a Jazz bar, and the first Emeril Lagasse restaurant at sea – Emeril’s Bistro 1396. For a little bit of Italy, check out La Piazza for family-style pastas, 24-hour pizzas, and other Italian favorites.

Outside, dip in the pool, catch some rays and chill with BBQ and craft beers at Summer Landing, featuring Guy Fieri’s Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse / Brewhouse.

Accommodations will be family-friendly with staterooms that sleep up to five. New onboard will be the Carnival Excel Suites, the top of the line accommodations with separate living and sleeping areas, wraparound balconies, and exclusive access to Loft 19 – a private enclave with cabanas, infinity pool, and dedicated concierge service.

4. MSC Virtuosa

MSC Cruises’ 18th ship – and one of the largest at 6,334 capacity – will arrive in early November. The amenity-filled ship includes an expansive Galleria central promenade lined with shops and eateries under an LED dome (think Freemont Street experience in Vegas), a large pool area with a big movie screen, the MSC Aurea Spa with treatment rooms, and MSC Gym powered by Technogym cardio equipment.

Known for the variety of entertainment and activity options, MSC will not disappoint with the Virtuosa, offering a Sportsplex gaming facility, F1 race car simulators, a full-sized bowling alley, a ropes course, an extensive aqua park, and two brand new Cirque du Soleil shows performed in the custom-built theatre.

Accommodations range from staterooms for one to cabins for families up to 10. At the top level is the MSC Yacht Club with lavish suites, 24-hour butler and concierge, all-inclusive meals and beverages served in-suite or at the club’s private restaurant. Other Yacht Club perks include complimentary visits to MSC Aurea Spa’s thermal area and exclusive access to The One Sun Deck and Top Sail Lounge.

A leader in onboard technology, MSC will incorporate sustainable, emissions-reducing systems into the design of the Virtuosa, as well as enhance the guest experience through the MSC for ME app and the world’s first personal cruise assistant ZOE, found in every stateroom.

MSC Virtuosa will sail the Mediterranean starting in November and will offer flexible embarkation and debarkation points, as well as itineraries of three to seven nights.

5.  Odyssey of the Seas

Also arriving in November will be Royal Caribbean’s second Quantum Ultra Class ship named Odyssey of the Seas. The Odyssey will feature the signature hallmarks of Quantum Class ships such as the North Star observation capsule, RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator, FlowRider surf simulator, and the SeaPlex indoor activity complex. In addition, exciting action can be found at the Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade, glow-in-the-dark laser tag, and the SkyPad VR bungee trampoline experience. A Solarium, pools, and whirlpools offer relaxation for the adults, and Splashaway Bay aqua park will keep the kids busy.

Dining continues to be Royal Caribbean’s strong suit, with Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar, Lime & Coconut cocktail bar, El Loco Fresh Mexican fare, and the robotic bartenders of the Bionic Bar taking center stage, along with classic venues like Chop’s Grille steakhouse, Windjammer Café, and whimsical Wonderland.

The Odyssey will feature accommodations for everyone from solo travelers to spa lovers and multi-gen families. The Royal Suite Class accommodations cater to discerning guests, with their own Royal Genie butler to take care of every need. Guests staying in the top suites will also have VIP access to the Suite Club with private dining rooms, an upscale Solarium, and a private sun deck.

Odyssey of the Seas will spend her inaugural season sailing to the Caribbean from Ft Lauderdale. In spring 2021 she will reposition to Rome and offer 7-12 night cruises to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Greek isles.

6. Scarlet Lady

Perhaps the biggest news announcement made in recent years was that Sir Richard Branson is finally getting into the cruise business. Virgin Voyages will launch with the Scarlet Lady in March and it will begin sailing in April, offering four- and five-night departures from Miami to Key West, the Mayan Riviera, and the Beach Club at Bimini.

Virgin will disrupt the market with its innovated cabin design, and that includes special mood lighting, hammock-equipped terraces, and a Seabed that transforms from couch and lounger by day to beds by night. Then there are the Rockstar Suites, outfitted with a music room, an outdoor hot tub, and come with complimentary drinks, access to the spa thermal suites, Richard’s Rooftop lounge, and even a hair and make-up team – what every celebrity needs.

Icon of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's new mega-cruise ship darling, was deemed a success before it was even built.

In January, the highly anticipated vessel — complete with more than 40 bars and restaurants, a six-slide waterpark, and a waterfall — set sail, dethroning its less than two-year-old precursor, the Wonder of the Seas , as the world's largest cruise ship.

Before its debut, Michael Bayley, the president and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, had already repeatedly called Icon its "best-selling product" yet. The company experienced its largest booking day ever when reservations opened for Icon of the Seas more than a year before its launch, it said

Despite all of this fanfare, you might be surprised by how similar it is to its predecessor.

I've sailed on both ships. Let's see how Icon and Wonder compare in six categories: size, neighborhoods, amenities, dining, cabins, and costs.

Both ships stunt the size of their competitors.

Wonder of the Seas debuted in 2022 as the then-world's largest cruise liner, measuring 235,600 gross-tons, 1,188 feet-long, and 18 decks-tall. The ship can accommodate up to 9,288 people, including 2,204 crew.

Icon of the Seas is, comparatively, 13,063 gross-tons heavier, eight feet longer, and two decks taller. It can sail up to 9,950 people, including 2,350 crew, although it's 52 feet less wide than its predecessor.

Both vessels feel more like amusement parks than traditional cruise ships.

Royal Caribbean invited me on complimentary, non-revenue sailings on both ships: two nights on Wonder in late 2022 and three nights on Icon in January.

I spent most of my time lost, overwhelmed, and exhausted.

It's no surprise both ships are operating weeklong itineraries this year. Any less, and you might not have time to experience all the activities and restaurants on your list.

Like other Royal Caribbean ships, Wonder and Icon have eight 'neighborhoods' that serve separate purposes.

The new ship shares three of Wonder of the Seas' neighborhoods : Central Park, Royal Promenade, and Suite.

Icon's other five — Thrill Island , Surfside, Hideaway, Chill Island, and AquaDome — are a first for the cruise line.

Many of the ships' amenities overlap, but in differing quantities.

Wonder has three waterslides. Icon has a six-slide waterpark complete with rafting and racing options.

Both have increasingly popular cruise amenities like decks-long dry slides, mini-golf courses, rock climbing walls, and playgrounds.

But instead of Wonder of the Seas' zipline , Icon of the Seas has Crown's Edge, a thrilling agility course with a small zipline that leaves travelers dangling 154 feet above the ocean.

Wonder’s Boardwalk neighborhood was my go-to.

Boardwalk delivered exactly as it had promised: an open-air space grounded by wood-planked floors, a hot dog stand, a sweets store, and kitschy, colorful decor.

Icon of the Seas' Surfside , designed for families with young children, felt like its closest dupe.

Both neighborhoods had a carousel, an outdoor playground, and family-friendly dining. But Surfside was more toddler-friendly, as suggested by the children's water play area and nighttime story readings.

On to entertainment: Both mega-ships have ice skating performances and exciting multi-disciplinary shows at the AquaTheater.

But travelers who enjoy musicals at sea will want to stick to Icon.

Unlike its predecessor, the new ship shows a rendition of Broadway hit "The Wizard of Oz" — Munchkins, a puppet Toto, and a 16-piece live band included.

The layout of Icon's amenities were better than its cousin.

Some of Wonder of the Seas' enticing outdoor amenities — like the surf simulator, zipline, and mini-golf course — are clustered on the deck above and away from the pools and water slides.

This layout might be difficult for parents with children who bounce from one activity to the next. Wouldn't it be easier to have all of these outdoor extras near each other, or at least on the same deck, for parental supervision purposes?

This is where Icon of the Seas excelled: All its exciting open-air activities were adjacent.

The rows of pools flowed perfectly into Thrill Island's waterpark , rock climbing walls, mini-golf course, and Crown's Edge.

The best part? The adult-only Hideaway — which flexes an infinity pool club with a DJ — is right behind Thrill Island, creating a clear separation between parents and their children without being too far from each other.

'Free' options like the buffet and build-your-own tacos and burritos bar are available on both ships.

But you won't find the larger vessel's five-stall food hall or mini-golf-adjacent finger food stand on Wonder.

As expected, Icon of the Seas has more dining options than its predecessor, although there are some overlaps.

Wonder of the Seas has 11 bars and 21 dining venues (9 complimentary and 12 upcharged).

Icon of the Seas has eight more bars, four more complimentary restaurants, and three more specialty dining choices.

Nor will you find the new ship’s plush $200-a-person Empire Supper Club on any other cruise liner.

The multi-course dinner, paired with cocktails and live music, stunts the cost of either vessel's other dinner options.

But if you love Johnny Rockets, you’ll be disappointed by Icon of the Seas.

Restaurants like the popular burger chain and Southern comfort-inspired Mason Jar are only on Wonder of the Seas. Fine by me: My fried chicken at Mason Jar was as dry as a desert.

The younger ship doesn't have Wonder's robot bartender-armed bar either. It does, however, have new watering holes with dueling pianos and live jazz.

Surprisingly, Wonder of the Seas has 65 more cabins than its new cousin.

But several of Icon's 28 stateroom categories are a first for the cruise line.

This includes the new family infinite balcony cabin, which has a small bunk bed nook for children.

Royal Caribbean assigned me an ocean-view balcony stateroom on both ships.

My Wonder of the Seas' cabin was 20 square-feet smaller than the one on Icon. But my bathroom on the latter was so tiny, I accidentally elbowed the walls at almost every turn.

Sailing on the world's largest cruise ship doesn't mean you'll have the world's largest cabin after all.

Wonder and Icon are both operating seven-night roundtrip itineraries from Florida to the Caribbean.

In 2024, Wonder of the Seas is scheduled for year-round sailings from Port Canaveral to the Caribbean and Royal Caribbean's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay , starting at $700 per person.

Icon of the Seas is spending its first year in service operating nearly identical itineraries but from Miami instead. The cheapest 2024 option is $1,786 per person.

That's a difference of more than $125 per person per day.

"Bookings and pricing for Icon of the Seas can only be described as 'iconic,'" Naftali Holtz, the CFO of Royal Caribbean Group, told analysts in February.

Icon of the Seas’ name speaks for itself.

If your family is looking for a jam-packed kid-friendly cruise with enough amenities to stay entertained for a week, both ships are a great option.

But if you're a seasoned mega-ship-cruiser looking to experience something new, Icon of the Seas is your best bet.

They may be similar, but no other behemoth cruise liner has a waterpark for children and a pool club for adults just dozens of feet from each other.

A cruise ship dancer from the Big Apple has been arrested in Florida for allegedly possessing and distributing child sex abuse material — with victims as young as 2 years old engaged in sexual acts with adults.

Jamaal Wade, 26, of Washington Heights, was arrested by US Marshals in Broward County on Sunday and charged with receipt, possession and distribution of child porn, WPLG reported .

It was not immediately clear if the arrest was made before or after a cruise.

“Wade distributed files containing sexually explicit images of minors from/on a computer in New York, New York via the Telegram messaging application,” states a complaint filed by the Southern District Court of New York obtained by The Post.

The victims were described as “prepubescent minors and minors who had not attained 12 years of age.”

An investigation was launched in October after federal agents seized the phone of a user of the messaging app Telegram. Wade allegedly sent that person child sexual abuse material depicting victims as young as 2.

The recipient told authorities he had gone to Wade’s Manhattan apartment to view the illicit material with him. He “also provided the username of an Instagram account used by Jamaal,” the filing says.

In January, the person sent the covert FBI employee eight videos “depicting male children between the ages of approximately four and eight years old engaged in sexual activities, including oral and anal penetration, with adult males,” it adds.

Wade also told the man he had been arrested in Detroit for conduct “while on tour.”

Detroit police records confirmed that he was arrested on Feb. 18, 2020, after being accused of molesting an 11-year-old boy. It was unclear whether he was convicted.

The suspect has allegedly admitted in online chats to molesting a boy while “on tour with a performance group.”

During the probe, a federal agent began chatting with Wade, who sent them several videos of young boys being raped and sexually abused, according to the court filing.

He also mentioned working on cruise ships as a dancer, though the document does not mention which company.

But in a 2020 profile posted by a staffing site , Jamaal Wade is described as having worked for both Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines, as well as on stage.

In a March 22 chat, Wade reportedly told the FBI agent that he had “brought his ‘collection’” of child sexual abuse material “on board the ship.”

He was charged with ​one count of receipt and distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.

He could face up to 20 years behind bars on each count if convicted.

As of Tuesday, Wade remained in the Paul Rein Detention Facility in Pompano Beach awaiting extradition to Manhattan, WPLG reported.

The Post has reached out to Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines for comment.

The era of large cruise ship visits to Bar Harbor might soon end

Unless another court ruling overturns Bar Harbor’s new cruise ship limits, 2025 is expected to be the last year that large passenger ships drop anchor in Frenchman Bay.

But it could be sooner than that — or may have already passed — if a judge decides that the town must enforce the new limits this year.

“Large” can be a relative term when the smallest cruise ships that visit Bar Harbor are more than 200 feet long and can accommodate 100 paid passengers. Most of the ships that visit Bar Harbor, Maine’s busiest cruise ship port, are closer to 1,000 feet long and carry between 1,800 and 4,000 passengers per voyage.

It is these larger ships that effectively will be banned from visiting the tourist destination when the town’s new daily limit of 1,000 passengers per day  starts being enforced. Of Bar Harbor’s current 104 cruise ship visits scheduled for this year, 70 would be prohibited if the daily limit was to go into effect before May 2, when the first large ship of the year, carrying nearly 2,400 passengers, is expected to arrive.

Of the ships that will still be allowed, most carry approximately 100 to 200 passengers and rarely do two of them appear in Bar Harbor on the same day. As a result, the town most likely will get only a couple hundred passengers ashore on cruise ship days — below the daily 1,000-passenger limit and far below the 2,000 to 5,000 passengers that have sometimes come ashore when multiple ships are in town at the same time.

But when the new limit will be fully enforced is a heated subject of debate  in Bar Harbor, where the council says it will honor reservations made by large ships before voters approved the new limits on Nov. 8, 2022. Charles Sidman , a local resident who spearheaded the referendum vote, is taking the town to court to try to legally compel it to enforce the cap now.

In addition, a coalition of local businesses is challenging the new daily limit in federal court, arguing that it runs counter to federal maritime law and is unfairly onerous. A federal judge upheld the new daily limit  in February, but the business group has said it intends to appeal the decision.

Regardless of which entity prevails in court, the number of annual cruise ship visits to Bar Harbor, which gets millions of visitors each year who arrive each year by car or bus, already is declining and likely will never regain the volume of recent years.

Outside the COVID-19 pandemic years of 2020 and 2021 — when the global cruise ship industry ground to a halt and no ships came to Bar Harbor  — the town recently has averaged roughly 150 visits each year, all between late April and early November, and received an annual total between 200,000 and 250,000 passengers. This year, even if large ships are allowed, the town will get fewer than 200,000 passengers for the first time — apart from 2020 and 2021 — since 2016.

After cruise ships first started showing up sporadically off Bar Harbor in the 1980s, their numbers jumped above 50 per year in 2001 and then above 100 per year in 2008. The town’s first year with more than 100,000 cruise ship passengers was in 2004, when it welcomed 87 ships into Frenchman Bay.

Along the way, the town has worked with local cruise industry officials to find ways to manage the flow of passengers to and from the downtown waterfront. It moved anchorage points in the bay behind the Porcupine Islands to make the ships less visually imposing from downtown, and tried making adjustments to how tour buses come and go from West Street to relieve traffic congestion, even as the number of visits consistently increased over time.

But as complaints continued to come in, the town decided in 2021 — when annual visits to Acadia National Park soared to more than 4 million  — to conduct a survey to ask local people what they thought about local cruise ship traffic. More than half  of the survey’s respondents said the volume of cruise ship visits was hurting the town.

With the writing on the wall, both town officials and local cruise industry officials began discussing how to reduce the number  of large ships that visit each year.

Together, they came up with a plan to impose a daily passenger cap of 3,800 passengers for May, June, September and October, and a daily cap of 3,500 for July and August. They also agreed on monthly caps of 30,000 passengers in May and June, 40,000 in July and August, and 65,000 in September and October.

But Sidman’s 2022 citizens’ petition effort, which led to the November referendum that year, derailed that plan.

For now, with Bar Harbor officials saying they plan to honor large cruise ship reservations made prior to the November 8, 2022 vote, the number of visits scheduled for 2025 stands at 18, all of which are large ships that together would bring nearly 57,000 ship passengers to town between late August and early October. The Regal Princess, which carries 3,560 passengers, would be the final large ship to visit Bar Harbor, on Oct. 28, 2025.

All large ship reservation requests that have come in since residents approved the daily 1,000-passenger cap have been denied, according to town officials.
