Why Tanzania?

Tanzania has been recognized as the home to the #1 national park in the world - Serengeti National Park. In addition, Tanzania is also recognized as unique among African nations in its tolerance for tribal, religious and racial differences.

You will be immediately impressed with the hospitality, warmth and interest the Tanzanian people display towards you. One client expressed “Tanzania is the one third-world country I would visit over and over again. It was truly the friendliest place I have ever visited.”

Reviews From Visitors

Bucket List. The friend I traveled with on this adventure has been my friend for 55 years. This was her number 1 item on her bucket list. When I told her I would go.....she started planning. Within 15 or so months......we were off. And I couldn't be happier.

The camps we stayed at were all top notch. The food was great and very abundant (even the breakfast and lunches we ate on the road). I don't eat that well at home. The pancakes at Sametu were the best I have ever eaten.

We couldn't have done this without the help of Lynn's planning expertise. She helped us every step of the way. Giving tips and making sure that we stayed on task. I feel like I have made a friend. She was fantastic. Our safari was specifically planned for us. We decided what we wanted to see and Lynn helped us plan this perfect trip.

When Joseph and Ester came to go over the trip with us in Arusha, I knew it was going to be wonderful. They explained everything that would happen at each camp so there would be no surprised. And Joseph met us at the end and made sure that we had gotten through to the gate at the airport. Unique Safari was with us from the first minute in Arusha to the last. This was very comforting. I am a person who likes to plan ahead and have everything ready. I never had to worry about anything....they did it for me.

Now to talk about our guide FAZAL. Words cannot express what an adventure he gave us. He asked what we wanted each day, and our response was always "You're the expert you tell us". And we are so happy we did. I can tell you that we saw some amazing things. Actually every night, I asked him how he was going to top that tomorrow. My advice to anyone planning a safari would be to trust the people who are the experts. Fazal taught us not to rush through any experience. Sometime you have to wait to see the best part of an animal.

I was very excited to go on this Safari but it was 100% more than I expected, The saddest part of this trip was when we said good bye to Fazal at the airport. There were definitely tears.

Unique Safari is the complete package HANDS DOWN!!

This trip was postponed due to, well you know. It was well worth the wait. Unique Safaris was top notch and the Guides, Russell, Shedrack and Fazal were knowledgeable, funny and willing to help us get the best experience and the best photos every day. They even helped me learn firsthand about some of the local flora (don't step on these). Our camps and their staffs were excellent and the people of Tanzania were friendly and helpful. You will not be disappointed using Unique for your safari needs also they are a locally owned company so you will help support their economy and businesses.

Traveling the world in a pandemic can be tricky but Meg K. of Unique Safaris did a wonderful job helping us in our safari travel to Tanzania. She kept us up to date on all of the requirements and gave us links to the forms that were needed. She arranged for our covid test prior to leaving Tanzania. She got us a service that whisked us through covid testing, immigration, and customs at the airport. On Safari, all of the camp staff not only went out of the way to make us comfortable but were very conscientious about all of the covid requirements. The highest praise has to go to our guide, Ellison. He got us into position for many a great photograph and didn’t complain when we asked him to move a foot or two so that we got a cleaner image. He was very knowledgeable about where the animals could be found, so we were treated to baby hippos, lion cub, leopard cubs, cheetah cubs, and a myriad of young antelope and zebra. The Mara River crossings were more spectacular than the Great Migration that we saw when we went to Tanzania March 2020. Photographically it was the best photo tour we had ever been on, totally Unique.

Absolutely the best vacation we have ever taken!!!!!! Lynn is what makes this trip so incredible! Her attention to every detail in planning the experience you want, her communication with you is impeccable! I truly cannot thank her enough! Once we arrived - all the planning Lynn mapped out for us, just played out more amazing then we could of ever imagined. Our guide, Russell was outstanding! He was kind, considerate, and so knowledgeable about every single question we asked him. And we asked a lot of questions!!! He really knew the area, animals, and the culture, etc. All the tented camps, food, transfers, and every detail is taken care of by Lynn. We simply showed up and had the most amazing trip of our lives!!! We are already planning a return very soon, Lynn and Unique Safari will be helping us again!!!

I am a US based photo safari workshop leader and to say Unique Safaris provided me and my clients the ultimate luxury safari experience would be an understatement!!! Top that with highly knowledgeable safari guides and it makes for an unforgettable experience. Meg helped me choose my camps based on my needs and boy were they a home run. I couldn't say more about how friendly and accommodating the staff was at each location during the two weeks. Absolutely top service from top to bottom with the Tanzanian staff, guides. and people as a whole absolutely warm and inviting. Looking forward to my return in 2022 and beyond!

If you are considering going on that "once in a lifetime" trip to Tanzania, do yourself a favor and use Unique Safaris. I travel a LOT and Unique is a company that can be trusted and they will make sure your trip is fabulous. I just returned from a 2 week safari and I can't say enough good things about the drivers and camp staff. There were 11 of us on this trip and everyone had a great experience. The tears and hugs when we left our drivers at the airport to go home said it all.

I wanted to take my daughter on safari as her graduation gift, but also wanted a strong focus on the photographic element as a photographer. Yes, I shopped other safari companies too. Lynn at Unique safaris did an amazing job of putting together a custom trip which included cultural activities, balloon rides, and the best game viewing opportunities ever. I made the right choice and am so grateful I did. The staff in Arusha matched us with a guide based on all the info we had provided. Bernard proved to the best guide we could have asked for. He took his job and professional responsibilities very seriously, and yet was able to join in the fun, banter and laughs. The lodging chosen was superb and the food unbelievable good; both roast duck and lamb on New Year's Eve-and we were hours out in the bush. The attention to detail from Lynn in trip preparation, availability and quick response to questions as well as the follow-through on those promises by the Arusha staff make this unquestionable the safari company of choice.

My wife and I just returned from our safari in the Serengeti with Unique Safaris. Ally, our guide, was fantastic in locating animals and birds during our trip. He was able to drive to locations that other guides would NOT attempt due to it being the wet season and some of the roads (basically dirt tracks through the Serengeti) were covered with water and had terrible holes that you could not see until you hit them. The difference with Unique is they use Mud Terrain tires not All Terrain tires like the other safari companies. Other companies stay on the main roads so you see the animals 100 yards away with 15 vehicles parked on the road while we were able to go to more isolated areas and get up close to the animals. Up close being lunch with a large price of lions and 5 lion brothers s walking by our vehicle and hitting it with their tails. We were able to see everything that we had on our wish list as well as gain a better appreciation for the birds in the Serengeti.

We stayed in tents while we were there so the animals were VERY close. The animals can get noisy at night so be prepared to wake up occasionally. One morning we woke up to the sounds of 8 lions taking down a wildebeest about 50 yards from our tent. Our guide had to pick us up for breakfast that morning in our vehicle since the lions were so close. When you stay in the tents you will need someone from the camp to walk with you when it is dark. Also as a treat Ally arranged for us to meet with a Project Cheetah expert researcher who gave us a much better insight into the amazing animal.

I usually do not write reviews but the difference in companies is significant. If you want to see a few animals with the crowds then Unique is not for you. If you do not mind getting bounced around in the vehicle to get to isolated areas and truly experience the Serengeti then Unique is your best option.

Meg did a good job working with us to get within our budget. I would recommend working with her to get within your budget rather than settling for a less expensive nondescript safari.

This was truly an exceptional once in a lifetime experience and Unique Safaris made all the difference. We also met the owner while on safari, and Ali was engaging and made us feel very welcome.

IS ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK WORTH VISITING?

Yes, Arusha National Park is definitely worth visiting. While it might not be the first choice for those seeking the “Big Five,” you’ll love its unique features.

The park offers opportunities for hiking and canoeing, which are not commonly found in other Tanzanian parks.

Also, you may be able to see flamingos and colobus monkeys, which are less common in other parks.

CAN YOU DO AN ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK SAFARI ON YOUR OWN?

Unlike other places in Tanzania like Tarangire National Park , you need a guide to visit Arusha National Park.

This is for your safety and to enhance your experience as these guides are knowledgeable about the park’s flora and fauna.

And let’s face it – everything is much more enjoyable when you know where to go with an experienced guide!

WHERE TO BOOK AN ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK SAFARI?

I personally booked a 3-day private safari with Altezza Travel which included a day in Arusha National Park, a day in Tarangire National Park, and a day in Ngorongoro Crater.

Altezza is a premier tour operator who has extensive expertise when it comes to the service and logistics of safari tours within Tanzania’s national parks.

They have an impressive safari fleet of Land Cruisers with a convertible pop-up roof that provides a panoramic 360° view. They’re also equipped with amenities such as a fridge for your refreshments, Wi-Fi access, and power sockets.

Each safari is customizable, tailoring the ideal dream tour to align with your specific travel style and comfort preferences.

When it comes to accommodation, you’ll be presented with options that include luxurious stone-built lodges and more authentic tented lodge experiences.

Special Offer: Altezza extends a 5% discount on all Tanzania Safari to my readers when you include the code JONNYMELON during your booking inquiry.

HOW MUCH DOES A SAFARI IN ARUSHA COST?

The cost of a safari in Arusha National Park will vary depending on your itinerary and the tour operator.

For a budget safari, you can expect to pay around $150 per person per day. On the other hand, for a more premium experience, you will find safaris for over $1,000 per person per day.

A mid-range option falls somewhere in between at around $300 to $500 per person per day.

I recommend the 1-day Arusha National Park Safari with Altezza Travel which costs $263 per person for a group of 5 people, or $444 per person for a couple.

HOW LONG DOES A SAFARI IN ARUSHA TANZANIA TAKE?

Normally, a visit to Arusha National Park is a one-day trip, providing a compact yet diverse introduction to Tanzanian wildlife.

That being said, the most popular safaris are multi-day experiences, often lasting 3 days or more. These safaris typically include multiple national parks.

BEST TIME TO VISIT ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK?

The best time for wildlife viewing in Arusha National Park is during the dry season, from late June to October.

During these months, animals are easier to spot as they gather around water sources. The vegetation is also thinner, which means it’s easier to see the animals and take photos.

The weather during this period is typically better, with average daytime temperatures around 21°C (70°F), dropping to around 9°C (48°F) at night.

MY EXPERIENCE ON THE ARUSHA SAFARI

After our Kilimanjaro trek , we were transferred by the Altezza Travel crew to Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge located just outside of Arusha National Park.

We spent one night here, and at around 7:30 am the morning after, our safari guide arrived at the hotel.

From the lodge, we began our journey to the entrance gate at Arusha National Park, a short 30-minute drive.

Arusha National Park

The first activity was a 1.5-hour walking safari with a guide and armed ranger around a section of the park.

We spotted countless wildlife such as warthogs, buffaloes, baboons, and giraffes to name a few, then we continued to check out the beautiful Tululusia Waterfall.

Arusha National Park 4

After the walking safari, we drove around the stunning Momella Lakes filled with pink flamingos, and then stopped for lunch at a picnic site overlooking Mount Meru.

We continued our Arusha National Park safari with a 2-hour game drive, spotting many more animal species and seeing some of the most beautiful landscapes I’ve seen in Africa.

Arusha National Park – The Ultimate Safari Guide

Split Top with Sidebar

Snug between Kilimanjaro  and  Mount Meru , Arusha National Park is one of the lesser-known safari destinations in Tanzania. It boasts densely wooded forests and secluded lakes, offering wildlife safaris, iconic hiking trails and more.

The park’s landscape is dominated by the towering Mount Meru, a near-perfect volcanic cone with a deep and impressive crater. Sheltered by the mountain is the Ngurdoto Crater, whose densely wooded slopes are home to a range of exotic forest birds and the extremely rare colobus monkeys.

Whenever I visit Kilimanjaro, I always make a point of descending into picturesque Arusha and basking in the rich environment, history and culture of this iconic wildlife park. It may not harbour as much wildlife activity as the other northern parks, but what it lacks in animals it makes up for in breathtaking vistas and exhilarating hiking and outdoor opportunities.

In this article, I'll give you my best insights into Arusha's rich history, best times to visit Arusha, the costs of an Arusha safari, how to get to Arusha, budget and luxury accommodation in and around Arusha, the abundant wildlife in Arusha and other scenic spots you can explore around Arusha.

Let's get started!

Which tour? Here are 5 Arusha safari tours I highly recommend:

  • Arusha National Park Day Safari (1 day)
  • Budget Big Five Safari (incl. Arusha)  (4 days)
  • 5 Days of Tanzania Safari  (5 days)
  • Northern Tanzania Camping Safari (7 days)
  • Serengeti Trail (incl. Arusha)  (8 days)

Arusha National Park FAQs

Before we descend into the Arusha National Park FAQs, why not try orienting yourself first with our dynamic map of Tanzania below? As you'll see, Arusha forms part of Tanzania’s Northern Circuit national parks consisting of the Ngorongoro Crater ,  Lake Manyara ,  Tarangire  and the  Serengeti .

Tanzania safari map by Mountain IQ

Arusha National Park is part of the Northern Circuit and offers a unique wildlife safari experience for visitors.

Why is Arusha called 'The Geneva of Africa'?

The town of Arusha is called 'The Geneva of Africa' because it is the launchpad for safari-goers visiting Tanzania. The bustling metropolis of Arusha is one of the fastest-growing cities in Tanzania and the epitome of African urban living. Arusha is in stark contrast to the untamed natural wilderness beyond the city’s borders.

Arusha is also close to other iconic destinations, such as Ngorongoro, Serengeti and Karatu, which are at most a two-hour journey from the town. Arusha National Park lies 32km east of the eponymous town and covers only 552 square kilometres.

Even if you don't end up doing a safari tour, visiting illustrious Arusha will be an unforgettable experience.

When is the best time to visit Arusha National Park?

Dry season (june-october):.

The best time to visit Arusha National Park is during the dry season between  June and October . The vegetation is thinner and water is scarcer, which makes it easier to spot animals. Another perk is fewer mosquitoes is the dry months and ultimately a reduced chance of catching malaria.

Arusha enjoys a temperate climate due to its proximity to the base of Mount Meru and its altitude of about 1300m. The Park is generally lush and green all year round and is comprised of a large forest section, even the rainy season can make for successful safaris.

Learn more about when to travel to Tanzania .

Wet season (November-May):

There are two rainy seasons in Arusha National Park. The season of ‘short rains’ is between  November and December  with sporadic showers generally clearing up quite quickly. The wet season of  March to May  brings long, rainy days and outdoor activities and safaris offer slim pickings. Most lodges also close their doors during this season.

The scenery is most spectacular during the wet season and many lodges offer low-season rates , which make the accommodation more affordable.

How much does an Arusha National Park safari cost?

Arusha safaris cost about $300 per person for a budget Tanzania safari to $950 per person for a luxury Tanzania safari . Tourists also have the option of selecting a Tanzania camping safari for their visits to Arusha National Park. It is relatively small, so most tourists usually spend 1-2 days in this national park. Also, tours are often combined with other popular tourist destinations in the area like Mount Meru, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the other Northern Circuit national parks (Serengeti, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro).

Arusha is a spectacular safari park waiting to be discovered. Safaris along the plains offer up sightings of Cape buffalo, various antelope and the occasional elephant, rhino, and leopard – if you’re lucky! Adding to the park’s allure is the opportunity to experience mountain biking, canoeing and walking safaris.

See more on the average cost of safaris in Tanzania  and the  best Tanzania safari tour operators . Also see more on which safari holidays in Tanzania suit you best and how to prepare for your next great adventure.

How do I get to Arusha National Park?

The best way to get to Arusha National Park is to fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport (60km east of Arusha), the main port of entry for visitors entering northern Tanzania. From the airport, it is a quick bus ride into Arusha town or directly to the park.

Alternatively, there is a small domestic airport in the west of Arusha itself which tourists can use for their travels.

What accommodation is there in or near Arusha National Park?

There are lots of accommodation options in and near Arusha National Park.

Africa’s ‘Safari Capital’ is home to some of the  best hotels and lodges in Tanzania . With Arusha National Park being so close it makes sense for most park visitors to stay in the town rather than in the Park where accommodation is scarce.

Where to stay? Here are 5 of my favourite accommodation options close to Arusha National Park:

  • Four Points by Sheraton (The Arusha Hotel)
  • Africa Lodge (Arusha)
  • Mount Meru Hotel
  • Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge
  • Lake Duluti Lodge

See more  Arusha accommodation options .

The most famous of the city’s lodgings is the Arusha Hotel. Frequently visited by John Wayne in the 1960s during the shooting of ‘Hatari’, guests will feel like they have been transported back in time when they visit the hotel’s famous bar.

Mount Meru Game Lodge and Wildlife Sanctuary is a retreat for discerning admirers of wildlife and nature. The sanctuary was created as a home for injured and orphaned animals, and the lodge provides a magnificent backdrop to the surrounding wildlife.

Other lodges set around the town of Arusha offering unique and memorable stays include Arusha Coffee Lodge, Arusha Safari Lodge, Kigongoni Lodge and Lake Duluti Serena Hotel. Africa Safari Lake Natron offers camping and caravan options just outside the park and has exquisite semi-permanent tents.

Hatari Lodge is one of just a handful of lodges inside the National Park’s perimeters. This classy establishment offers nine rooms situated in the acacia woodland. Views of Mount Meru can be enjoyed from the terraces of the main building. Guests can also enjoy highly professional game drives and walks.

What other scenic spots can I visit near Arusha National Park?

Lucky for you, there are many scenic spots you can visit that are close to Arusha National Park.

Mount Meru tops out at 4556m, making it the fifth-highest peak in Africa and second highest in Tanzania. Being so closely located to Mount Kilimanjaro it can be an excellent choice for climbers trying to acclimatize before attempting one of the world’s Seven Summits.

The first ascent of Mount Meru is still a hotly contested topic and is widely thought to have been undertaken and achieved by either Carl Uhlig in 1901 or Fritz Jaeger in 1904. It is not to be confused with Mount Meru in the Himalayas, which was the site of the 2015 movie ‘Meru’.

Mt-Meru

Here are a few important things to note about Mount Meru:

  • Its formation
  • Challenges of the climb

Adding to the mountain’s allure is the fact that it is still an active volcano. The mountain burst into life with its first explosion around 500,000 years ago. That explosion blew apart half of the mountain and the eastern rim was shattered. This left behind the distinctive 5 km wide breached caldera. The most recent eruption was in 1910 but it now stands dormant.

An additional summit, Ash Cone, was formed during the eruption in 1910 and is worth exploring. After drinking in the unparalleled views at the summit, most hikers will make their way all the way back down to the Meriakamba Hut or right back to the gate.

climb-mount-meru

There is only one route up the mountain – the Momella Route. Starting at the Momella Gate, the first portion of the hike passes through plains and forests filled with waterfalls and wildlife. There are two huts along the route up to the summit:

  • Meriakamba Hut is roughly a five to six hour walk from the gate and is an ideal place to spend the first night on the mountain.
  • Saddle Hut is the second hut and is normally used for lodgings on the second night.

On the final day of the hike, climbers will negotiate their way past Rhino and Cobra Point, relishing views of the Tanzanian highlands as the rising sun gently illuminates the plains below. The last part of the hike traverses the narrow crater rim path – an exhilarating section, especially when the summit is capped in snow.

The view from the summit is breathtaking with a 1500m drop down a sheer cliff to the crater floor on one side, and the vast plains of Tanzania stretching out on the other.

Meru is a challenging climb in its own right and although no technical climbing gear is needed, it is high enough to bring upon the effects of altitude sickness. Most journeys to the summit take three to four days with a guide and usually porters. An armed ranger accompanies hiking parties through the entire expedition to alleviate the threat of wild animal attacks.

Momella Lakes

Momella Lakes offer an enjoyable change of pace to the usually dry and arid Tanzanian landscape. The tranquil waters can be explored with canoe while taking in the stunning views of Mt Kilimanjaro 70km to the west, with its snow-capped peak.

The forest trails in the Ngurduto Crater offer 50 kilometres of footpaths winding their way through the belly of the jungle. The beautiful network of trails leads hikers to the top of the crater rim where the panoramic views of the forest and plains below are simply spectacular.

What animals can I see in Arusha National Park?

Despite being relatively small, you can still see animals in and around Arusha National Park. Of these animals, monkeys and flamingos are notable features of this unique African habitat.

Monkey Population  in Arusha National Park

A highlight of the park for many is the chance to spot the black and white colobus monkeys performing their acrobatics high up in the canopies that decorate the Ngurduto crater’s edge. Walk through the forest and listen as the eerie calls of the monkeys reverberate through the trees.

Blue monkeys or diademed monkeys have also prized sightings in Arusha. Part of the ‘old world monkeys’ family, these natives of central and east Africa are a rare find.

Pink Flamingos in Momella Lakes

Arusha-National-Park-Flamingos

Momella Lakes is special because of its unique aquatic wildlife and habitats as well as its diverse footpaths for hiking through picturesque forests to the Ngurduto Crater.

A variety of water birds – the majestic pink colonies of flamingoes being a particular favourite - can be found in the forest areas.

Arusha National Park Safari

unique safaris arusha

Arusha National Park Safari is one of the greatest safari and tour park destinations in Tanzania . Arusha National Park, just a few kilometers from Arusha town and Kilimanjaro International Airport , is a one-of-a-kind park that offers visitors a unique experience. Despite the fact that the Arusha national park is not as well-known as other Tanzanian parks such as the Serengeti , Ngorongoro, Tarangire , Lake Manyara, and Mount Kilimanjaro national park, it is one of the few parks with more attractions, and safaris to this area have never disappointed visitors. I cannot guarantee that your experience at Arusha National Park, such as wildlife viewing, will be comparable to that of the famed Serengeti National Par k, but you can rest assured that it will be unique and of more satisfaction.

The largest populations of giraffes, the fifth largest mountain in Africa (Mount Meru), and the unique vegetation and landscape (the park has more than four types of vegetation supporting a greater diversity of wild animals and bird species) are just a few of the attractions in Arusha National Park. Due to its small size, Arusha national park is considered a day trip safari destination, but for visitors with a larger budget, a safari to Arusha national park can take up to one week to explore all of the park’s beauty, from four days hiking to Mount Meru to canoeing safaris to walking safaris, and so on.

Arusha National Park is a small park with a wide range of safari options. Wildlife safaris, which can be done on a game drive or a walking safari, hiking safaris , which involve a four-day hike to Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second largest mountain, horseback riding safaris , which can be done within the park, city tour safaris, and cultural tours are all available in the Arusha national park. It is a tiny park with many tours that might make you stay in this park if you want to see all of the gorgeous areas of this park, yet some people claim that it is only a one-day safari tour, which is true if you’re only doing one tourist activity like game drives.

A wildlife safari in Arusha National Park

This is one of the Tanzania safari and tourist experience given by the Arusha National Park. Arusha National Park is home to a variety of wild creatures that may be seen roaming freely within the park, with giraffe populations being particularly high when compared to the park’s other species. The park contains a diverse range of habitats and plants, which support a diverse range of wild creatures, making a wildlife safari to this national park both memorable and magnificent. Giraffe, Cape buffalo, zebra, warthog, black-and-white colobus monkey, blue monkey, flamingo, elephant, bushbuck, and many other African wildlife can be found in the Arusha national park.

The park also features predators, including two members of the Big Five, such as leopards and lions, but they are rarely observed in comparison to herbivores. The forest’s birdlife is abundant, with many forest species more easily observed here than elsewhere along the tourist route. Narina trogon and bar-tailed trogon are two probable highlights for visiting birders, while a variety of starling species provide less dazzling interest.

Game drives , which are divided into early morning game drives, late afternoon game drives, and night game drives, each with their own distinct experience in animal viewing, are available in the Arusha national park. Walking safaris are also available for wildlife watching, allowing tourists to get up close and personal with the Arusha national park’s habitats, plants, and wild animals. Another wildlife safari and game viewing activity in the park is canoeing, which is done at Momella Lake. This not only allows you to see animals while on a safari boat, but it also provides you with a good opportunity to see flamingos because the lake has larger populations of flamingos.

Arusha national park hiking safari

This is another safari in the Arusha national park; unlike other national parks, the Arusha national park offers both animal and hiking safaris , which can be combined or done independently. Mount Meru , Tanzania’s second tallest peak and Africa’s fifth largest, is located in the Arusha national park, giving hikers the opportunity to put their physical talents to the test. Mount Meru is a 4566-meter active volcano located 70 kilometers west of Mount Kilimanjaro. It takes a maximum of four days to climb to the top and return. Some argue that Meru is actually more difficult, and it is certainly quieter. As a result, there is a lot more wildlife to observe, and the sense of isolation and solitude is much stronger than on the surrounding, more well-known summit.

The mountain is the focal point of Arusha National Park, and its fertile slopes rise above the surrounding grassland, supporting a forest that is home to a varied range of wildlife, including approximately 400 bird species, as well as monkeys and leopards. As they approach and climb the mountain, hikers will be able to witness a variety of species. Mount Meru’s ascent is fairly steep in sections, and the path to the summit passes through grasslands, tropical rainforest, alpine meadows, moorlands, and desert uplands before reaching snow. A thin, barren slope leads to the peak, which offers spectacular views of the Ash Cone, which lies several hundred feet below in the crater.

Arusha National Park horse riding safari.

This is another Arusha national park safari offered by various companies. Horseback riding is a unique type of activity and attraction in Tanzania , and it is only offered by a few firms and is only available in a few national parks, including Arusha, Lake Manyara, and the Serengeti. The dense vegetation of Arusha National Park is home to a large number of big game, several primate species, including the black and white colobus monkey, flamingos, and numerous birds. This horse ride is suitable for intermediate and experienced riders due to the resident big game in the forest and glades.

The majority of horseback rides to Arusha National Park begin at Ngongongare Gate and take you through the lower half of the park. The main goal is to see scenery and game from a horse, and the riding pace is sluggish due to the terrain and dense forest. The horseback riding path will take you into the Little Serengeti, where you will likely see buffalo, giraffe, zebra, and antelope. In addition, the ride will take you up into the forest, where you will enjoy a saddle snack lunch in a beautiful setting. You must be able to react to the movement of wildlife that may frighten the horse throughout the journey to Arusha National Park. Because you may be compelled to gallop out of difficulty, these rides require an “intermediate” level of competence.

Arusha national park Cultural safaris and city tours

Another Arusha national park safari that can be done just outside the park’s boundaries. The cultural and city tour in Arusha includes visits to the Waarusha and Maasai tribes , which are located adjacent to the Arusha national park, as well as visits to local farms, such as coffee farms, where you can meet and interact with locals and learn about how they practice local farming and cultivation. The cultural/city tour in the Arusha national park can be added to your safari package and itinerary at the end of your hiking and wildlife safaris in the Arusha national park.

Arusha national park safari you will be able to see different tourist attractions such as wild animals, birds, mount meru, Momella lakes, ngurdoto crater, different waterfalls, the Serengeti Ndogo, uwanja wa mbogo etc. but also you will get a chance of doing different tourism activities such as hiking, walking safaris, game drives, canoeing etc.

At Arusha Trips, we only work with local guides who are not only knowledgeable, but truly passionate about their work. We believe that a good guide makes for a good safari, but a great guide makes for an unforgettable one.

All of our guides work incredibly hard and always go the extra mile to make sure you feel right at home. They are great at spotting wildlife and know the parks like the back of their hand. That’s something we’re proud of.

Safari vehicles. For our safaris, we use the latest  4×4 Toyota Landcruisers , capable of overcoming the roughest terrains. All vehicles feature large windows and  a   pop-up roof to get a 360° view.  They come equipped with electricity ports to charge your camera & phone, a fridge for cold beverages, two way radio communication, cushy seats, binoculars, animal books and more. This ensures a comfortable ride anytime, anywhere. We also offer  unlimited game-mileage , meaning you can drive as far and as long as you want!

Together with your personal Tanzania-specialist , you create your ideal safari, one on one. We combine your preferences and wishes with our in-dept knowledge of Tanzania to create that perfect holiday.

Sustainable tourism in Tanzania

As travelers, we want to enjoy our holidays as much as possible, but at the same time we have to consider the environmental impact our journeys may have. Therefore, we try to do as much as we can to keep our environmental footprint to a minimum.

Arusha Trips was founded out of love for nature and wildlife. In fact, our entire business relies on it. Naturally, we want Tanzania’s wildlife to thrive and it’s nature to flourish, so we can continue enjoying its incredible natural wonders for generations to come.

For this reason (and many others), we are actively involved in creating a more sustainable future for the safari industry, without compromising our guests’ experiences. Starting by drastically reducing our plastic usage/waste and opting sustainable alternatives in all aspects of our operations, as well as sharing our knowledge & practices with our local partners.

Let us plan your Tanzania adventure!

Serengeti's great plains.

A typical day in the Serengeti begins with a sunrise safari, when the animals are most active and you have the best chance of witnessing some thilling predator-prey action straight out of National Geographic. Here, you may come face to face with the top predators that rule these plains, such as lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, and more.

For the rest of the day, we’ll explore the vast expanse of the Serengeti, and, if we’re lucky to be there at the right time of year, witness the great migration – the undisputed highlight of any safari!

For a different perspective, you can opt to take a balloon safari over the Serengeti’s impressive plains and spot wildlife from above. This early morning experience comes complete with a champagne breakfast, making your trip even more unforgettable.

Into the Crater! Spot the BIG 5

After breakfast, we will drive towards a steep and narrow road that takes you into the Ngorongoro crater. A bumpy, but adventureous road with some beautiful views! The slopes are forested, but soon the landscape changes to savannah.

Down in the crater, you’ll be able to spot many animals from a distance. Here is your best chance to spot all the members of the Big 5, including the endangered black rhino!

After the first gamedrive we’ll have a relaxing picknick-lunch at a hippo-filled lake. After lunch, we’ll slowly drive back to the edge of the crater and stop whenever we pass an interesting sight!

Kwaheri Tanzania (Goodbye Tanzania)

The safari is sadly over, but today you can finally sleep in, relax and enjoy your last hours of Tanzania’s incredible beauty and renowned hospitality.

At the end of the day, your guide will be waiting for you once more, for a wonderful farewell. Today you will leave not only with your bags, but also with a head full of everlasting memories, incredible experiences and jaw-dropping stories for your friends and family back home.

Safe Flight!

Tip:  Extend your holiday with a visit to one of Tanzania’s tropical islands such as Zanzibar , Mafia or Pemba Island .

Arusha National Park – An Easy One-Day Safari

Planning a visit to arusha national park here’s what can enjoy in one day.

Arusha National Park is one of several parks on Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit, albeit one that is often neglected by visitors who are seeking the allure of the more popular parks like Serengeti or Ngorongoro Conservation Area .  And that is truly unfortunate.

Arusha National Park is just 45 minutes from Arusha , the third largest city in Tanzania and the starting point for most of the country’s safaris.  It combines some of the best features of the other Tanzanian parks in an area of only 552 square kilometres (213 square miles).

It makes the ideal starting or ending point for a longer Tanzanian Safari adventure and gives you a glimpse of what you will see in other parks. Below we detail our day in the Arusha National Park and the exciting experience we had.

Highlights of Arusha National Park

Despite its small size, there are lots of highlights in Arusha National Park.  Here are some that we think make it a place well worth visiting.

✅ The main attraction of Arusha National Park is Mount Meru which is 4,562 metres (14,968 feet) high.  It is a great spot to get acclimatized to high altitudes if you are planning on tackling Mount Kilimanjaro, which is only 79 kilometres (43 miles) to the east.

✅ You can do a safari from Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport and back in just one day.

✅ There are many animal species including the fascinating Colobus monkeys and hundreds of flamingos.

✅ There are several different ecosystems in Arusha including craters, a river, alkaline lakes, savannahs and a rainforest.

Our Arusha National Park Safari

Arusha National Park was the first stop on our 10-day Tanzania  North Circuit Safari Tour.  And it was a great introduction and teaser to what the next nine days would bring us.

We started our day by arriving at the south Arusha National Park Gate just after 9:30am.  After a short stop, while our guide registered our group, we began our tour with a driving safari through the south of the park.

Arusha National Park entrance gate

Our safari started with a drive through the south section of the park where the terrain was initially quite densely forested. It is this area that is well known for the black and white Colobus monkeys.

Black and white colobus monkey

We also saw large baboon troops including numerous families.

Baboons on the road

It wasn’t long before we encountered the first wildlife of our safari.  Off to the right of our safari vehicle, a towering giraffe appeared, munching on the leaves of the tallest trees around her.

Giraffe

As we made our way past the giraffe, we could see a few others browsing on the nearby trees.  They were sleek and majestic and there is such a thrill about the first encounter that you make with large wildlife on safari.

After passing through the wooded area we arrived at an open plain that stretched out to the hills in the distance.  This is the area known as “Mini Serengeti”, because of its resemblance to the plains in Serengeti National Park.  Here we could see buffalo and zebra grazing on the grasses.

Buffalo and zebra

We continued driving north past the open grasslands along Momela Road spotting waterbuck, baboons and colobus monkeys amongst the dense brush of the woodland.

Waterbuck

At just past 11:00am, we arrived at the Momela Gate, in the north section of the park. Here we disembarked our safari vehicle and were introduced to our park rangers who would be taking us on a walking safari for the next 1 1/2 hours through a marshy grassland to view some wildlife up close.

Ranger/Guide in Arusha National Park

It was a bit disconcerting to see that the rangers were carrying rifles, but it was explained to us that they are required to do so for all walking tours because they are responsible for the safety of the animals and the guests .  What’s more, they take great pride in using non-lethal methods to deter dangerous animals. The fact that they carry rifles is also a deterrent to potential poachers.

Walking safari

The walk took us along a narrow trail into the marshy grassland and we immediately saw a herd of buffalo off in the distance.  This area is quite well known for buffalo who love the lush grasslands here.

Buffalo

We trekked along the trail at a pretty relaxed pace.  This allowed our guide to point out the vast array of fauna and flora in the area.  There were dozens of bird species, as well as interesting and peculiar insects both on the ground and on the plants.

Insider Tip

One thing to be cautious of when on a walking safari is the large number of ants.  They are easy enough to avoid if you are keeping an eye out. Long pants are necessary!

It is important not to stop and stand in an area where the ants are gathering as it won’t take them long to climb onto your feet and legs.  And they do sting! Just make sure to wear good walking or hiking shoes with socks and long pants.

After hiking for about 45 minutes, we ventured into a more densely wooded area, eventually coming upon a fast-moving stream.

Rocky stream

A little further on, the underbrush separated into a clearing, and we could see mist and hear the thunder of a single waterfall tumbling into a rocky stream.

Waterfall

After spending a bit of time taking photos of the waterfall, we headed back on the trail.

Continuing on, the brush became sparser and once again opened out onto a clearing, this time with a meandering river cutting through the grassy plain.

We eventually found the dirt road leading back to where our safari vehicles were parked and walked about 800 metres (1/2 mile) to our starting point.

From here we got back in our vehicles and drove about 15 minutes to a wooded area where makeshift tables and chairs were set up.  This is where we would be having our first safari lunch.  The local food was spread out on small tables covered in colourful cloths.

Lunch in Arusha National Park

There were a variety of salads, samosas, barbecued chicken, and beef on a stick.  This was accompanied by rice dishes and followed by dessert and tea or coffee.  Quite a good spread considering we were in the middle of an African park.

Following our lunch, we loaded back into the vehicles and continued to drive toward the northeastern part of the park.  We passed by more grassland and observed herds of zebra, waterbuck, and buffalo.

Eventually, we came over a rise and could see the outline of a lake in the distance.  This was one of the seven alkaline Momelia lakes in the park, and it was blanketed in a sea of pink flamingos.  As we approached the lake, their flapping and squawking could be heard above the sound of our vehicle’s engine.

Flamingos in Momelia Lake

We had seen flamingos on a previous trip to Galapagos, but only a few at a time.  This lake was covered in hundreds of birds, the most we had ever seen in one place.  We didn’t realize it at the time, but we would have a similar experience when we visited Ngorongoro Crater a few days later.

Flamingos

Leaving the Momelia Lakes area we headed back towards the Arusha National Park Gate at the south end of the park.  In the open grasslands beyond the lake, we passed several groups of grazing zebra.

Zebra

Our last sighting for the day would be several giraffes tucked in amongst some tall trees pulling the dense foliage off the branches with their long tongues.

Giraffe

We arrived in Arusha National Park just after 9:30am and departed at 4:30pm, spending a total of 7 hours in the park.  In that time, we had done two separate game drives and a walking safari.

We had passed through several different ecosystems including open grasslands, marshy wetlands, alkaline lakes, and a rainforest. And we had the privilege of observing a multitude of animals in their natural habitat.  What a way to start our Tanzanian Safari tour!

As we’ve already mentioned, Arusha National Park, while not large, has a little bit of what some of the other larger and more popular parks on Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit have.  We would consider it to be a microcosm of The Tanzania Safari experience.  Here is a list of what makes Arusha National Park so special.

Perhaps the most visible part of Arusha National Park is Mount Meru, which, as we mentioned earlier is the 5th largest mountain in all of Africa.

While it is dwarfed in size by its sister, Mount Kilimanjaro (which, by the way, you can see from Meru on a clear day), it is still an impressive sight. Mount Meru is an active volcano which last erupted in 1910, leaving behind a caldera where the top once was.

Mount Meru

There are specific tours of Meru that include a climbing safari where you will get spectacular views, see some unique wildlife and get a chance to walk along the rim of the caldera.

Ngurdoto Crater

While most people traveling to Tanzania for a safari may get a chance to visit Ngorongoro Crater , if you happen to be in Arusha National Park, why not visit its little sister Ngurdoto Crater?

In fact, Ngurdoto Crater is so similar to Ngorongoro Crater that it is referred to as “Little Ngorongoro”.  It is considerably smaller in size however, at only 3.2 kilometres (2 miles) across and 300 metres (1,000 feet) deep, compared to Ngorongoro’s diameter of 16 kilometres (10 miles) and depth of 600 metres (2,000 feet).

Ngurdoto Crater is an extinct volcano that is basin shaped.  Its steep sides are covered in rain forest and it has a soft, marshy floor blanketed in grasslands that make it an ideal habitat for the diversity of wildlife that inhabit its space.

Since the floor of the basin is so  soft, Ngurdoto Crater only hosts walking safaris, which makes for a unique and intimate experience.

Momelia Lakes

If you read our blog on Lake Manyara National Park , you might remember that the famous lake is noted for its alkaline nature due to the volcanic minerals in the ground.  Well, Arusha National Park has its own version of alkaline lakes.

Momelia Lake

The seven lakes that make up Momelia Lakes are located at the northern end of the Arusha National Park and are a key feature for the wildlife here.

Momelia Lake

The lakes were formed more than 200,000 years ago when Mount Meru erupted and blew volcanic debris into the valley.  Because of the different mineral content in each lake, they are all different in colour with hues of blue and turquoise.  The lakes are a major attraction and habitat for a variety of birds including the Greater Flamingo, Herons, African Fish Eagles and Egyptian Geese.

Serengeti Ndogo

If you want to get a taste of the Serengeti Plains but won’t have time to get there, then maybe a visit to Arusha National Park can give you a small taste of what you are missing.

Serengeti Ndogo

Serengeti Ndogo, translated from Swahili to mean “Little Serengeti” is a grassland near the north gate of the park.  It is a haven for herbivores like buffalo, zebra, waterbuck, elephant and warthogs.

Tululusia Waterall

Tululusia Waterfall is a scenic cascade of water falling 28 metres (91 feet) and dividing the lush vegetation on either side of Tululusia Hill on the lower slopes of Mount Meru.

Tululusia Waterfall

The area is home to colobus monkeys as well as elephants and the occasional tree climbing python!

Ujambo Wa mbogo

If you are looking for a great spot to view buffalo then you can’t go wrong by visiting Ujambo Wa mbogo, literally translated to “buffalo glade”.

Ujambo Wa mbogo

This marshy grassland in the northeastern part of the park is fed by winding streams and is dotted by bushes.  It is a prime feeding ground for buffalo and warthogs as well as a wide variety of birds.

How Long To Spend In Arusha National Park?

So, just how much time do you need in Arusha National Park?  Well, it really depends on what it is you want to do. Even though it is one of the smaller parks in Tanzania, there is so much diversity in this park that you could literally spend days here and not see everything.

If you are looking for a safari type adventure in the park, then, like us, you can probably get that done in one day.  This will get you to most of the main areas in Arusha National Park allowing you to experience several different types of ecosystems.

On our day in Arusha National Park, we covered most of the central region from the South Gate (Arusha National Park Gate) all the way to the North Gate (Momelia Gate).

Arusha National Park

You will see the most popular and abundant animals including buffalo, zebra, giraffes, warthogs, waterbuck, flamingos, baboons and monkeys.

Baboon

If you want to experience Mount Meru or the Ngurdoto Crater, then you will need an extra day or two.

Mount Meru is on the far western part of the park and for many it is a tour on its own.  Day hikes are available on the mountain, but for a more extensive exploration of Meru, there are four-day hikes available. In fact, climbers who are looking to prepare themselves for the ambitious Mount Kilimanjaro climb will often use Mount Meru to get acclimatized to the altitudes.

Ngurdoto Crater is a walking tour only because of the soft basin floor which isn’t suitable for driving. It is located on the far eastern part of the park.

So, in summary, you can get a good taste of the park and experience a real African safari in one day, or, you can spend two or three days to see the whole park and experience all it has to offer.

Does Arusha National Park Have The Big 5?

Most people who come on an African safari are hoping to see the elusive “Big 5” mammals – leopard, lion, buffalo, elephant and rhino.  These were the animals that were considered to be the most dangerous to hunt back when big game hunting was a thing.

So, can you see the Big 5 in Arusha National Park?  Well, not quite.

You will certainly see buffalo in Arusha National Park, as they are quite abundant here.  In fact, Ujambo Wa mbogo, which literally means “buffalo glade” is the perfect spot to observe these impressive herbivores.

There are also elephants here, although for some reason, we didn’t see any the day we were here. But you can see a lot in Tarangire National Park .

And if you are really lucky, you may “spot” a leopard in or near a tree, but leopard sightings are rare here, so if you do see one, consider yourself lucky.

You definitely won’t see rhinos or lions in the park.  Rhinos are an endangered species and there are only a few parks in Africa where they still exist, including Ngorongoro Crater , which is a five hour drive to the west.

The last lion sighting in Arusha National Park was in 1998.  The primary reason is the encroaching human population around the park.  Arusha National Park is only 45 minutes from the 3rd largest city in Africa.  The fact that there are no lions in Arusha National Park is one of the key reason that walking safaris are so popular (and safe) here.

Arusha National Park Fees

During the High Season, the current park fee is $50 USD per person.

During the Low Season, the current park fee is $45 USD per person.

Arusha National Park Things To Do

There are plenty of things to do in Arusha National Park, despite its small size.  Here are the ones that are most popular:

1) Game Drives

2) Walking Safaris

3) Mountain Climbing

4) Bird Watching

5) Canoeing

6) Guided Nature Hikes

7) Horse Back Riding

Arusha National Park Facts and History

The area around Arusha National Park was initially inhabited by the early Maasai pastoralists.  In the 17th century, the WaMara and then the WaChanga tribes migrated to the Mount Meru area.  They were followed by the WaArusha people.

The first Europeans to settle in the Mount Meru area were the Germans in 1862.  In 1890, they set aside the area as a Forest and Game Reserve, as the area was abundant in rhinos and hippos.

In 1920, under British rule, the Mount Meru area was designated as the Mount Meru Complete Game Reserve.

Start of the walking safari

The area to the east of Mount Meru, and what is now in the central region of the park was farmed and used as a cattle ranch up until the late 1950s.   One of the farmers, the Trappe family, set aside a large portion of their estate as a game sanctuary.

In 1960, the Ngurdoto Crater, in what is now the most eastern part of the park, was combined with the Trappe estate and designated Ngurdoto Crater National Park.

Finally in 1967, Mount Meru and the area around Momella were added and the park officially became the present day Arusha National Park.

Arusha National Park Animals We Saw

We spent just seven hours in Arusha National Park, but we were amazed at the number and variety of animals and birds that we were able to observe.  And on top of that, because of the walking tour, we got to see many of them up close and personal! Here is the list of 29 different species of wildlife that we saw in Arusha National Park.

Best Time To Visit Arusha National Park

Although you can visit the park all year round, the best time to visit Arusha National Park for animal viewings is the dry season, from June to October.

Kim in front of the safari vehicles

If you are into bird watching, or want to see Arusha National Park at its most lush, then the wet season, from November to May is a good time to come.

If you are here in the period from December to February, you will get the clearest skies and this is the best time to get a view of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.

The Final Word…Arusha National Park – A Little Bit Of Everything

Arusha National Park was our first game drive on our ten day Tanzanian Safari adventure, and we were not disappointed.

Even though the park is relatively small and doesn’t possess the allure that some of the larger Tanzanian parks have, it does offer a little bit of everything.  We liken it to going to a restaurant and ordering an array of appetizers instead of settling into a big entree.

With its mountain, savannahs, marshy wetlands, lakes, woodlands, rainforest and its very own crater, Arusha National Park has a lot to offer.

While you won’t see Rhinos and Lions here, you will see pretty much all of the other popular African safari animals and you can do it all within a 45-minute drive of your Arusha hotel or the Kilimanjaro Airport.

If you only have one day to spend on safari, then make sure to put Arusha National Park on your bucket list!

What’s Next for Jane Goodall? An Immersive Spectacle in Tanzania.

“Dr. Jane’s Dream” is going up in East Africa, where visitors can experience the primatologist’s scientific breakthroughs (complete with termite mound).

Close up photo of the 90-year-old face of the primatologist Jane Goodall.

By Ralph Blumenthal

Are you ready for the Jane Goodall Experience?

It’s getting ready for you.

“Dr. Jane’s Dream,” an immersive spectacle by former Walt Disney Imagineers and African artisans celebrating the groundbreaking English primatologist and environmental activist, is taking form in a cultural complex in Tanzania.

Its debut, in the safari gateway of Arusha, between Mount Kilimanjaro and Serengeti National Park , is planned around World Chimpanzee Day, July 14, 2025 — 65 years since Goodall, then a 26-year-old novice researcher chaperoned by her mother, landed at the Gombe forest reserve to begin her field work for the anthropologist Louis Leakey .

Within months she upended scientific doctrine by observing an adult male chimp she called David Greybeard raid a termite mound, stripping leaves from a hollow branch to extract and eat the insects. The making and using of tools was long thought a hallmark of humans.

Since then, the nonstop Goodall, who turned 90 on April 3 during a typically exhausting American tour, has been lionized (or aped) in books and movies. She’s a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and a United Nations Messenger of Peace. And champion of a global crusade of young people and celebrities from Prince Harry to Leonardo DiCaprio fighting deforestation, climate change, pollution and factory farming.

Her nonprofit Jane Goodall Institute in the U.S. is projected to raise $30 million this year, with additional millions raised by the other 25 chapters worldwide, a spokesman said. Her youth movement, Roots and Shoots, is operating in 70 countries.

But she has never been presented like this — in an immersive tribute by African artists and Disney veterans. Disney has called Imagineering the “blending of creative imagination with technical know-how.” But “Dr. Jane’s Dream” is not a Disney project; rather, it taps into storytelling techniques by some of its former innovators.

At “Dr. Jane’s Dream,” Goodall said in New York last week, “There’s a tent where my mom and I were and two little peepholes looking out into the world of the chimps.” Visitors will be challenged. “They go into this dream world and are going to have to investigate. It’s like an adventure.”

Goodall is now on one of her globe-circling jaunts that keep her on the road some 300 days a year. She flew in from the West Coast at the end of March and after Canada and a few days back home in her native Bournemouth on the English Channel, she is booked to Europe, Africa, Australia, South America and Asia.

Since Jan. 12, she calculated, she has slept in her own bed five nights.

On April 2, Goodall was on East 54th Street at the Hotel Elysée with its Monkey Bar — a coincidence, she insisted — along with the fact that her top floor suite had been the last abode of the playwright Tennessee Williams, who died there in 1983 at 71, choking on the cap of a bottle of barbiturates.

Her latest project, “Dr. Jane’s Dream,” is unfolding at the Arusha Cultural Heritage Center, opened in 1994 by Saifudin Khanbhai, whose great-grandfather from India established a trading outpost in British colonial Tanganyika in the 1800s.

Khanbhai offered Goodall a location on the five-acre heritage site, amid a complex of half a dozen buildings and four huts displaying the work of some 3,000 artists and jewelers and showcasing the region’s unique blue gemstone, Tanzanite.

“We just connected so well,” Khanbhai said in an interview. “I’m a man of chemistry. If it works it works.”

Her building’s shell of round drumlike forms is already up, with the interior exhibits coming over the next year.

“Basically, she is getting the deep storytelling, design and immersiveness of Disney Imagineering because — well, we adore Jane,” said Tom Acomb, an architect with his own firm, AOA, and a former Imagineer who teamed up with colleagues including Joe Rohde , creator of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park in Florida, to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars of free design services for “Dr. Jane’s Dream.”

But Acomb said, “Disney has nothing to do with the project, nor is any technology of theirs deployed in any way. What is in the mix is a process — the process that was unique to Disney Imagineering’s ability to tell a story.” He said they still did support work for Disney when called upon.

The idea, Rohde explained, was to create “much more of an experience center than an expository center.”

“What we’re trying to do,” he added, “is sort of take all the feelings and emotions that made Jane Goodall Jane Goodall and transfer that into a series of objects and encounters.”

It was not so much “about” Goodall, he noted, as “feeling her.”

He said it would feature a kiosk with a recording of Goodall translating chimp cries into English; a ceiling of 800 leaflike tiles painted by various African artists, models of animals wrapped in information about them (requiring close study by visitors, just as Goodall had to closely study her subjects); and elaborately carved and painted tree trunks in a style of artmaking called Makonde .

And, of course, the famous termite mound.

“Rather than just telling people that this is the way chimps fish for food,” Rohde said, “we want to compel people to do something like what the chimps do — use these little probes to stimulate something within the termite mound. You’re not learning about what chimps do — you’re learning what they do.

“It’s a very Jane Goodall thing.”

To keep “Dr. Jane’s Dream" maintainable locally, it will limit fancy technology, and allow for improvisation, Rohde said.

“It’s going to be what it becomes as the artists make it.”

Born in London in 1934, Goodall grew up cherishing animals, even, as a not-yet-2-year-old, taking earthworms to bed with her. Her mother, Vanne, convinced her that the worms would do better in the ground. At 4½ she lost herself in the henhouse trying to figure out where eggs came from.

Her parents separated when she was little and, amid Nazi bombings, she relocated with her mother and younger sister to her grandmother’s home in Bournemouth. The first book she read was “The Story of Dr. Dolittle,” about a country physician who talks to the animals. Another early book, “Tarzan of the Apes” left her jealous, she remembers: “He marries the wrong Jane.”

Set on visiting Africa, Goodall saved her waitressing money and, at 23 in 1957, sailed to Kenya where, though lacking a college degree, she sought out Leakey who with his wife, Mary, was excavating early human fossils in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania.

One day at the site, out walking with another assistant, Gillian Trace, and the Leakeys’ two protective Dalmatians, Toots and Bottom-Biter, Goodall noticed they were being trailed by a young male lion. The dogs, off leash, were busy chasing a mouse.

“Gillian wanted to hide in the vegetation at the bottom of the gorge,” she recalled last week. “I said no, the lion would know where we are, we won’t know where the lion is. We have to climb up on the plains so the lion could see us. I had this firm belief that animals wouldn’t hurt us if we are not a threat to them.”

Goodall said she was less worried about the lion than coming back to Mary Leakey without the Dalmatians.

Afterward, Louis Leakey, impressed, offered her a job studying chimpanzees for clues to man’s earliest ancestors. She became one of his three ape mentees, “the trimates,” who also included Dian Fossey on gorillas and Birutė Galdikas on orangutans. Fossey would be murdered in Rwanda in 1985.

Goodall returned to England but sailed back to Africa with her mother in 1960 to begin her research in Gombe, on Lake Tanganyika.

Alone in the jungle with only their cook, both were felled by malaria. Her mother nearly died. “We just lay in our beds and handed the thermometer back and forth,” Goodall recalled. Somehow, without quinine, they recovered.

She tried repeatedly to make contact with the chimps but they remained aloof, as recorded by an old movie camera she propped up in a tree fork.

Until, after nearly four months, David Greybeard let her get close enough as he made his tool of the tree branch.

“It was held in the left hand, poked into the ground, and then removed coated with termites,” she recorded in her field book. “The straw was then raised to the mouth and the insects picked off with the lips, along the length of the straw, starting in the middle.”

Goodall said she knew immediately that her breakthrough would thrill Leakey. He cabled back: “Now we must redefine ‘tool,’ redefine ‘man’ or accept chimpanzees as human.”

But Goodall also observed the primates in warfare and cannibalism — along with manifestations of empathy and communal rearing of offspring orphaned by poachers. At a waterfall, she observed chimps dancing as if in religious awe.

Sergio Almécija , senior research scientist in primates and human evolution at the American Museum of Natural History, said Goodall revolutionized the way we understand primates and other animals — “like the transition from radio to color TV.”

Starting in 1961, Goodall returned periodically to Cambridge for what became four years of doctoral studies in ethology. “I was told you must focus on feeding behavior or maternal behavior, but not everything,” she recalled.

She focused on everything. She also rejected complaints that she was giving names, not just numbers, to her chimp subjects and recognizing their humanlike traits.

When National Geographic sent a renowned Dutch wildlife photographer, Baron Hugo van Lawick, to Gombe in 1962 to document an irresistible story — a young Englishwoman among the apes — a romance blossomed. They married in London in 1964 and had a child, Hugo Eric Louis, nicknamed Grub. (Now a house builder in Africa and Latin America, he has two sons and a daughter, Goodall’s grandchildren, who work on some of her projects.)

A slowdown in assignments sent van Lawick in search of work in the Serengeti and he and Goodall divorced in 1974. A year later she married the Tanzanian national parks director, Derek Bryceson . He died of cancer in 1980, when Goodall was 46.

In 1986, she helped organize a conference in Chicago, and was shocked to learn how deforestation and pollution were decimating animal populations.

“I went to the conference as a scientist and I left as an activist,” she said.

After revelations of terrible conditions at the Brazzaville zoo in the Republic of Congo, she persuaded the American oil company Conoco to help build a chimp sanctuary in that country. She convinced leading research laboratories like Harvard’s that chimps, after all, made poor models for medical experimentation to benefit humans. Many long-captive animals were released to sanctuaries (though ape-trafficking remained rampant).

She widened her focus to human behavior as well, and became a vegan. “How can we even save the precious chimpanzees,” she asked, “when people all around are struggling to survive?”

Some of her favorite stuffed animals that she carries around in her hand luggage sat last week on a mantle in her New York hotel room: Mr. H, a monkey from a blinded United States Marine, Gary Haun, who became a proficient magician, skier and sky diver; Pigcasso, a South African pig taught to create artworks with a paintbrush in her mouth; an octopus from the movie “My Octopus Teacher”; and Rattie, an African pouched rat trained to detect land mines.

Two other items were away on display at a National Geographic Museum traveling exhibition called “Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall” — a piece of the Berlin Wall and a limestone rock from Nelson Mandela’s Robben Island prison.

All symbols, Goodall says, of her mantra — hope.

“I’m seeing humanity as at the mouth of a very long dark tunnel,” she said, “and right at the end is a little star — that’s hope. But in order to get there we’ve got to roll up our sleeves and climb under and crawl over all the obstacles that lie in the path, like climate change, and loss of biodiversity. And a very important one is poverty. We must alleviate poverty because really poor people destroy the environment to survive.”

In her hotel suite, the living room lights and brass chandelier were lit. A photo of Tennessee Williams glistened in a vitrine.

Goodall was in a bedroom, resting her eyes from her travels and lectures into the spotlights. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, the chandelier began to sway.

Goodall didn’t seem surprised to hear of it. Once, she said, staying in another suite on the same floor, she had seen an apparition.

Did she believe in a hereafter?

There’s either nothing or there’s something, she said. Finding out the answer would be “the next great adventure.”
