Why A&K, Abercrombie & Kent's high-end luxury tours are travel legends

a&k machu picchu tours

Why Is A&K Abercrombie & Kent, the Luxury Tour Company, So Famous?

There are so many luxury tour companies out there. Abercrombie & Kent , now referred to as A&K tours, is a well-known luxury travel tour company. This industry pioneer was founded in 1962 and became synonymous with adventurous luxury tours.

A&K is a repeat honoree of luxury travel awards. Among these honors:  Travel + Leisure World's Best Awards; Condé Nast Traveler World Savers Awards; and National Geographic Adventure Best Adventure Travel Companies on Earth.

How A&K Abercrombie & Kent Is Different

A&K offers global travel in two styles: either in small groups led by an A&K expert tour director or on private tours with a customized itinerary and local guide.

With its half-century of experience and contact-building, A&K is able to offer unique access to its global destinations. Its distinctive m.o. covers 60+ worldwide offices with extensive local networks and profound access; locally-residing tour directors and guides; exceptionally qualified guides, such as the former resident archeologist at Macchu Pichu (shown above); small groups on group tours, with a maximum of 24 travelers; expertise in numerous areas including luxury, culture, history, wildlife, and green travel.

Where A&K Abercrombie & Kent Luxury Tours Go

Politics permitting, A&K travelers can go anywhere. Company tours explore the farthest and most exotic corners of this planet. Some tantalizing examples: great rivers like the mysterious Amazon and Southeast Asia's Mekong; fables mountain ranges like the Andes and the Himalayas; eerie deserts like the Sahara and the Gobi, in central Asia's Silk Road; and Antarctica expeditions and cruises.

A&K tours also bring travelers to the world's most cherish places: its great cities: historic, modern, and emerging; ancient wonders, like Nimes in France and Varanasi in India; UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and  Asia's sacred temples  like Angkor Wat. With A&K, modernists can explore benchmarks like the Galápagos, the Amazon, Alaska, and New Zealand, and Australia's Outback and Great Barrier Reef.

A&K Abercrombie & Kent's History

A&K was established in East Africa in 1962 by Geoffrey Kent and his parents, UK citizens Valerie and Colonel John Kent. Geoffrey was born in Africa while they were on safari. Enchanted by the continent. Geoffrey Kent opened numerous offices in Africa over the next decade.

Jorie Ford Butler of Oak Brook, Illinois became an Abercrombie & Kent partner in 1971. Together, Geoffrey and Jorie expanded A&K into a worldwide group of companies with headquarters in London; Melbourne, Australia; and Downers Grove, Illinois.

As of 2018, Geoffrey Kent is still traveling the world. He scouts locations, hotels, and attractions. He interviews guides. He ensures that the standards he and his parents established are in force on every A&K journey. And he leads  Around the World with Geoffrey Kent , a once-a-year super-deluxe journey whose price begins at $160,000.

Looking to book a 25th anniversary visit to Peru and Machu Picchu for my wife and myself. We like to be pampered and enjoy luxury travel and would like to do this visit with the best possible operator. We're considering Abercrombie and Kent's 8 day Signature Peru trip which is just us and a guide. This would be departing April 9th-16th. Any thoughts or comments on these dates, Abercrombie and Kent for Peru or other top tour company?

' class=

Some other companies that will do private tours for you include Kuoda Tours and Ancient Summit. They are both highly recommended on this forum, and will book luxury level accommodations, etc., as you wish. Do a search on each of these companies on the Peru forum to see the many accolades.

Haven't really heard much about Abercombie & Kent on this forum -- and most likely they will subcontract to local providers.

Private trip? The best part of the trip will be not having to hang out with other A&K guests.

I am new to this forum and haven't really used A&K, but have checked them out for previous trips. They are very high end and do throw in a few extras like special museum openings, walks with experts & meals in top notch restaurants that are sometimes not available to or are way too expensive for the individual.

But on the whole, one can do a similar itinerary (sometimes longer) with near identical hotels for a fraction of their cost! I generally use their itineraries as a guideline and work around them to plan my trips

If budget wasn't an issue, I would be tempted to try them though!!

Just checked out the A&K Signature Peru itinerary. The Awanakancha visit & the Hiram Bingham train are optionals!! Nothing else there that merits a higher price tag! I would definitely try out local agencies like Kuoda.

high end luxury travel at macchu picchu in an abercrombie tent....seriously,are you having a laugh???...this is a revered spiritual site, not to be disrespected with materialism, and shows of wealth.....what is happening to macchu picchu i have to ask????....fastpaced,greedy,rich tourism on steroids making those tour operators a hell of a lot of cash...to the demise of peru's national treasure ,to please the ever needy needs of western and other tourists......and this is so wrong because it is irresponsible tourism which is turning peru into a new disneyworld.

...and don't forget those golf clubs and gin and tonics......

Christian, it is Abercrombie & Kent not "Tent":)

Their hotel of choice is the Sanctusry Lodge.

yea ,i noticed that when i posted...abercrombie tent...ha ha ,never have had such a laugh....make that gin and t's all around!!

err,you said Sanctusry Lodge...was this meant to be sanctuary lodge...or was this a slurr from too many g&t's young chap?

Consider Backroads instead.

"Lost" Machu Picchu

Exploring mystical machu picchu in peru's sacred valley.

The abandoned Incan "city" of Machu Picchu in Peru's Andes Mountains is a mystery. No one knows for sure why it was built, some 500 years ago – or why it was deserted. In fact, this ancient citadel was hidden from the western world until Hiram Bingham, an archaeologist from Yale University who was searching for other ruins from the empire of the Incas, stumbled upon it by accident in 1911, and dubbed it the "Lost City of the Incas." Maybe you can figure it out as you explore this amazing maze of a place, with what experts guess was a palace, dungeons, and over 100 staircases.

Sanctuary Lodge, A Belmond Hotel

At the gateway to the inca empire.

The only hotel located at the entrance to Machu Picchu, Sanctuary Lodge, A Belmond Hotel, lets you beat the daily crowds that flock to Peru's centuries-old Inca citadel. Sitting in the shadows of the Lost City, this stylish retreat is an oasis of calm before or after a day exploring Machu Picchu. Unwind with a yoga session, take part in a traditional shaman ceremony in the garden, or sip muña tea in Tampu Bar. Tranquility, wonder and beauty are at the heart of the lodge's unique experience.

This was our first Tauck trip, and we were not disappointed. We went to Machu Picchu and the Galapagos. While it was a whirlwind trip, there was so much to see and do.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Peru and Ecuador. You do not need a visa for this tour provided that you do not stay in Peru or Ecuador longer than 90 days.

If you are a citizen of another country , you should contact a consulate or embassy of Peru and of Ecuador to determine what travel documentation is required.

You will be issued a boarding card, which you must present before embarking the ship in each port. This security measure also ensures that only Tauck guests are permitted onboard.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Cruise Regulations

International maritime security guidelines require that your passport information be provided to us prior to your embarkation. You need to provide this information to us as soon as you book your cruise or boarding may be denied. Once you board the ship, your passport will be held by the purser until you disembark.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Special Luggage Restrictions for this Tour

Due to space limitations aboard the motor coaches and local aircraft, we urge that only one piece of checked luggage be brought on this trip. Additionally, space constraints and weight limitations aboard the train to Machu Picchu require guests to carry limited personal belongings. Each passenger is restricted to no more than 50 lbs (23 kg) of luggage. Therefore, we will provide you with a duffel bag (roughly 1 ft by 1 ft by 2 ft in overall dimensions, or 30.5 cm by 30.5 cm by 60 cm) to carry your clothing and personal items for your one-night stay in Machu Picchu. Meanwhile, checked luggage will be stored, at the Belmond Monasterio in Cusco during the Machu Picchu excursion and, if desired, the Hotel del Parque, in Guayaquil during the cruise. Small carry-on bags are permitted, but Ecuadorian airlines will check large wheeled carry-on's, if desired with the larger luggage. If you reside in the Continental United States the duffel bag will be sent to your home and should arrive approximately two weeks prior to your departure for Peru. Guests residing in Alaska, Hawaii or outside of the U.S will receive their duffels upon arrival in Lima. Each guest is also restricted to one carry-on bag weighing no more than 22 lbs (10 kg).

Checked Luggage – General

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc. For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

To fully enjoy this tour's itinerary, participants must be in good health. This is a rigorous tour and you need to be in good physical condition with good balance as the terrain varies from sandy beaches to uneven lava and rocks. Proper walking shoes with ankle support are essential. You may want to bring a walking stick. Walks range from 1 to 2 mi (3 to 6 km) in length and last from 1.5 to 2.5 hours.

You will spend several days touring at high altitudes in Peru [especially Cusco at 11,200 ft (3,414 m)]. At these altitudes some visitors may suffer varying degrees of altitude sickness, including nausea. We have found that some guests may be more affected by the altitude than others. Medications are available to prevent altitude sickness, and we urge you to speak with your physician prior to your departure from home to discuss prophylaxis for safe travel.

All ship-to-shore transfers use Zodiacs or Pangas (capacity 9 to 12 persons). Occasionally you will get wet with spray. Some wet landings require guests to wade through knee-high deep coastal water.

There are eight decks on your Silversea vessal; there is an elevator.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters. Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues. The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest. Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

We travel between the various islands so the areas in which we cruise are sheltered. If you are prone to seasickness, bring a non–drowsy, over-the-counter, anti-nausea medication. Anti-nausea wristbands are also a good idea. The anti-nausea patch is NOT recommended for use in the islands as it tends to impair vision in direct sunlight.

Bottled water is available throughout the trip, both in Peru and Ecuador. A stainless steel water bottle is provided onboard that can be filled with water and taken during onshore excursions.

Guests bringing a quantity of medication with them are advised to carry a doctor's certificate to avoid possible problems with customs officials.

Smoking is not permitted in any interior space on board the Silversea vessel .  Smoke and open fire will activate the smoke detectors. Smoking is permitted on designated areas on Deck 4 aft for cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking. Please do not throw your cigarettes overboard, as it is a violation of international maritime pollution laws and they can easily be blown back onto the ship. Please refrain from smoking on shore and in shore excursion vehicles and ship tenders. Smoking is also not permitted on the motor coaches. These regulations pertain to e-cigarettes as well.

The only islands with bathroom facilities are San Cristobal and Baltra, where there are visitor centers and airports. We will be returning back to the ship for lunch and dinner, and Zodiacs or Pangas will travel back and forth to the ship during shore excursions.

Your Silversea vessel is equipped with a medical center and a doctor is on call 24 hours. If you avail yourself of his/her services, a charge will be posted to your personal shipboard account.

If you are traveling as the guardian of a child or children, we strongly suggest you bring along a letter from both parents of the child authorizing any emergency treatment, as medical facilities may require permission from the child's parent or parents.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Airline Disinsection

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued a guidance letter that requires airlines and travel agents to disclose to consumers countries that require the use of insecticides by airlines. Please click  here for more information.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The Peruvian coast is generally sunny and hardly ever receives any rain, but from April to November there is a heavy sea mist. The highlands have a wet season (October to April) and a dry season (May to September), when the days are clear and sunny but cold at night especially at higher altitudes.

The Galápagos Islands lie almost on the equator about 650 miles (1,046 kilometers) west of the coast of Ecuador. The islands have an unusual climate in view of their proximity to the equator; rainfall is low and temperatures are lower than would be expected. There are no extremes of heat or cold, and temperatures range from 75° to 86°F (24° to 30°C) year round. The weather is hot and sunny in the islands and sea temperatures average 67° to 72°F (19° to 22°C). For guests planning on swimming, most swimming takes place at midday hours. Although there is more rain on the larger islands which are hilly (such as Seymour Island), rainfall is low at sea level and comes during the months of January to April. Light drizzle and even fog, however, are not uncommon at other times of the year.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

This is a very casual tour.  Dressy clothing is not required for the farewell dinner.  You may, however, want to bring one dressy outfit for our dinner at a private home on Night 2.  Most important are comfortable walking shoes with ankle support for walks over rocky, uneven terrain.  You will also need reef shoes or aqua shoes for beach landings. Your feet will get wet.  Bring a windbreaker, sweater or jacket for the cool nights at sea.

Bring a bathing suit for swimming and snorkeling (snorkeling equipment is provided or you can bring your own).  If you use a prescription snorkeling mask, you will need to bring it with you.  A wetsuit is recommended for snorkeling in September and October, as the water tends to be cooler.  A small selection of wet suits are provided on the ship for your convenience.

To assist in early morning wake-ups, we suggest bringing a compact, battery operated alarm clock. You can also arrange a wake-up call while on board.

A small backpack will be very useful during Galapagos shore excursions and our visit to Machu Picchu.

IMPORTANT: Sundries and toiletries are difficult to find in the Galapagos Islands.

Consider packing a number of garment combinations you can mix and match over four or five days before needing to do laundry. There are no guest laundry facilities available aboard ship, only a clothes dryer to dry wet clothing.

Beyond your normal wardrobe and personal grooming items, we suggest you also bring along:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (VERY IMPORTANT!)
  • Rain gear (lightweight slicker)
  • Sunscreen, sunhat, lip balm with SPF 15 or higher
  • Travel alarm clock/ cell phone with alarm function
  • Small flashlight
  • Prescription medicines (an adequate supply to last your entire journey), and written copies of your prescriptions from your doctor.  While it may be possible to refill prescriptions during your journey, the availability of refills cannot be guaranteed.  What's more, refilling prescriptions in foreign countries can be difficult and time-consuming.
  • Insect repellent
  • Swimming attire
  • Teva-style sandals or water shoes
  • Seasickness / high altitude medication
  • Reusable zipper lock bags or other waterproof bags for cameras during ship-to-shore transfers
  • Antibacterial lotion
  • Small backpack
  • Camera (with extra memory cards, telephoto lens, chargers and batteries)

We recommend that you pack any prescription medicines (an adequate supply for your entire journey) along with your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag, in order to minimize any inconvenience should your luggage be lost or delayed.  We also recommend, for your peace of mind and personal security, that all expensive jewelry and other valuables be left at home.

Please refer to the Necessary Gear website at  www.necessarygear.com  as one option available to you for renting and purchasing apparel, PPEs, and other items appropriate for your journey.

Introducing Northern Peru, home to the ‘new Machu Picchu’

Northern Peru Kuelap

Imagine Machu Picchu. Spectacular, historic, utterly iconic. And then magnify the history and minus the tourists, and you’ve got a sense of Kuelap.

You’ve probably never heard of Kuelap’s pre-Incan ruins and how they pre-date Machu Picchu’s, but it’s time their wonders got some recognition. Because they’re only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to lesser-discovered Northern Peru, a region we’re so excited to be taking travellers to for the first time ever.

Why? Northern Peru just has a different feel to it. Compared to more visited regions and more standard routes, it shows a sleepy, scenic side of the country that very few see: tiny Andean towns, dramatically lush landscapes and all. Not only are there fewer crowds and a more laid-back atmosphere, the highlights really are unbelievable.

Northern Peru Kuelap Gocta hike

Hiking in Northern Peru

Coming up: a quick guide to this barely-visited region (hint: it includes ones of the world’s highest waterfalls), what you need to know about the ruins of Kuelap, and all the cool activities Intrepid’s 7-day trip has to offer:

The allure of Northern Peru: the must-see spots

A few of our favourite historic and scenic parts:

Kuelap – the ‘new Machu Picchu’

Now, don’t get us wrong – we absolutely love Machu Picchu . We will never tire of standing at its Sun Gate, watching the mist lift off the mountain, feeling oh so small. It really is once-in-a-lifetime, a symbol of South America. But heading to Kuelap is truly like heading back in time. Mostly because you’ll be surrounded by so few other visitors that you can really enjoy the views from the hilltop fortress. And because you can really get lost in your imagination of what this place was like when the Chachapoyas civilization were here.

Kuelap Northern Peru

Yes, Kuelap is a pretty special place. It’s one of Peru’s most significant archaeological sites and it’s no longer difficult to get to thanks to the cable car that’s just been completed. Though it will get busier in time, visiting now is a perfect way of coming face-to-face with history. And of taking in Northern Peru’s jungle-clad, panoramic vistas.

READ MORE: 7 REASONS TO VISIT PERU (THAT AREN’T MACHU PICCHU)

The site itself is built on a mountain-top that sits in a cloud forest 3,000 metres above sea level. If that isn’t cool enough, it’s sheer age should be. It’s been estimated that construction on Kuelap began around the 6th-century, coinciding with the rising Chachapoyas culture. Its colossal walls and complex interior architecture reveal administrative, religious, ceremonial and other residences.

Kuelap Northern Peru

The view from Kuelap

STILL not impressed?  Kuelap is considered the largest stone ruin site in the New World. It’s comprised of 10 times the number of stone blocks that were used for the Great Pyramid of Giza. There you have it. A site that’s more than worth a day or so of your time. And, as The Guardian put it, the ‘new Machu Picchu’.

Gocta Falls – a little-known beauty

You’ve probably heard of Iguazu Falls , you may have been to Niagara Falls, and you’ve likely dreamed of Iceland’s array of waterfalls . But, let us be the first to tell you that the Gocta Falls are as spectacular as they are unknown.

That’s no exaggeration – until 2005 the two-level waterfalls sat hidden in the Andes, known only to locals. It’s only been in the last decade or so that they’ve gained more recognition. They’re still incredibly under the radar.

Kuelap Northern Peru Gocta Falls

Gocta Falls from afar

There’s little point in us explaining just how magnificent Gocta is – the photos speak for themselves – but rest assured that this spot is a must-visit. Not least because, by some measures, it’s the third highest waterfall in the world. And the 771 meter (2,529 feet) gem is also home to some picturesque hikes and a ton of photo opportunities.

Insider tip on when to visit Kuelap and Gocta from Gary Cohen, Intrepid’s General Manager for South America:

It’s generally quite warm during the day, but can get chilly at night. The best time of year to come here is during the dry season from May to September. A bit of rain isn’t bad though, it gets the Gocta Falls pumping harder!

Kuelap Northern Peru

Gary exploring Kuelap

Yerbabuena, Mancora and much more

There’s so much more to Northern Peru. But because we can’t list every cultural, archaeological and natural delight, here are a few more gems:

The Sunday markets of Yerbabuena.  The largest market in the entire region, Yerbabuena attracts buyers and sellers from all over to sell produce and animals. It hardly attracts any tourists, making for an authentic and memorable visit.

The historic town of Chachapoyas.  Though this town is charming and filled with colonial buildings, it’s its location that really sets it apart. Not only is it the gateway to the walled city of Kuelap, it’s also close to two worthwhile attractions. The first, the Revash Mausoleums, serve as collective tombs for Chachapoya’s dead; the second, Leymebamba Museum, is home to many mummies uncovered at the Laguna de los Condores site.

Northern Peru Revash Mausoleums

Revash Mausoleums

The surf village of Mancora.  Home to some of Peru’s best beaches, sunny Manorca is one of the highlights of the country’s northwest. Its great surf attracts a mix of locals and tourists, but the hot springs, mud baths and lively nightlife are also reasons to visit.

4 benefits of visiting Northern Peru with Intrepid Travel

We know Peru – both north and south – like the back of our hands, but we thought it was worth clarifying exactly how we make our new Northern Peru trip just so unique and memorable:

The expertise of local leaders

The reason we felt so confident saying we know the country like the back of our hands is thanks to the expertise of our wonderful local leaders.

Lima Northern Peru Kuelap

Intrepid leader expertise in Cusco

Our Intrepid tour guides in Peru (all 60 of them!) are all locals. And, more than that, they’re all passionate about showing off their country. So, whether you’re looking for an un-touristy bar in  Cusco , a behind-the-scenes insight into Peruvian culture, or some extra encouragement to accomplish that hike, they’ve got your back.

For more info on our local leaders and trips to Peru check out these 10 facts you probably don’t know about Peru .

Insider tips for exploring Lima

As we’ve said, our leaders know all the cool local haunts. Nowhere is this more obvious than in Peru’s capital, Lima. It’s in this city where you begin our Northern Peru trip , and where their tips will prove invaluable upon landing.

To help you acclimatise, we offer an included leader-led orientation walk of Miraflores, a neighbourhood you’ll love. It’s by the sea and offers some of the best parks, shopping and restaurants in the city. Not a bad way to get to grips with the city.

For more incredible experiences in Lima, we recommend our sister company, Urban Adventures. Their day tours are also all led by locals and include coastal biking trips , dinner with a Peruvian family , and a street food and nightlife tour .

Otherworldly accommodation

We handpick all of our accommodation on all our trips, ensuring comfort, safety and an insight into the local culture. But this really is a special one. If you visit Northern Peru with our sister company, Peregrine (trip here ), you stay at a lodge built for the sole purpose of providing views of the awe-inspiring Gocta Falls.

Gocta Lodge Kuelap Northern Peru

The lodge by Gocta Falls

In other words, it sits nestled in the Andes, oriented towards the waterfall and is surrounded by all the gardens, pools, terraces and llamas (!) you could wish for.

Its outdoor swimming pool isn’t too shabby either.

Gocta Lodge Kuelap Northern Peru

Full-day guided tour of Kuelap

If it wasn’t obvious already, we’re pretty excited about Kuelap. (There aren’t many of us in the fan club YET but  Lonely Planet has dubbed it “one of the most significant and impressive pre-Columbian ruins in all of South America”.)

So, to ensure visitors do this wonder justice, we offer a full-day guided tour of the site. It’s pretty spectacular and the local knowledge you’ll receive when there makes it all the more so. Honestly, pay it a visit and you’ll wonder why it receives so few visitors.

The new Machu Picchu has so much to offer the Intrepid explorer.

Northern Peru – beautiful, undiscovered and ripe for adventuring – awaits. Discover it for yourself on our 7-day Northern Peru trip.

What to know when planning an awe-inspiring hike on the Inca Trail

Peru's most famous trail leads to Machu Picchu

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

Machu Picchu in Peru on a beautiful sunny day

While on the Inca Trail, every step — past ancient ruins, up stone staircases and over Dead Woman's Pass — brings hikers closer to their final goal: reaching Machu Picchu. Trains and buses drop thousands of visitors off here every day, but hiking in offers an unmatched experience. Hikers get to sit in sacred spaces, sleep under the stars and bond with their fellow adventurers. The promise of being able to reach the Sun Gate and take in that first view of Machu Picchu keeps them motivated.

Planning a hike on the Inca Trail takes time. There are also important factors to keep in mind, like when the dry season is and what time of year the trail is closed for maintenance. Here are some tips to ensure an epic experience.

What is the Inca Trail?

A hiker on the Inca Trail in Peru

Hikers get to see stunning views from the Inca Trail

The Classic Inca Trail is a 25-mile-long hiking trail in the Andes Mountains that takes four days to complete and ends at Machu Picchu. After starting at KM 82 in the Sacred Valley, hikers will follow the stone paths that wind by sites like the Valley of Llulluchapampa, Sayacmarca ruins and Wiñay Wayna complex. On the final day of the trek, you most likely will rise well before dawn in order to arrive at the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu around sunrise.

How soon should you start planning a hike?

An alpaca at Machu Picchu

Running across alpacas is another highlight of the Inca Trail

If possible, think about booking six to nine months in advance. The peak season to visit is June through August, and with the Inca Trail being a popular hike, permits are snapped up quickly.

What is the best time of year to hit the trail?

Different flowers grow along the Inca Trail

One of the many types of flowers that grow along the trail

The trail is open year-round except in February, when it is closed for maintenance. Dry season is May through September, "where temperatures are milder and you can expect bright, sunny days, making for great visibility along the hike," Krissy Concannon, an independent affiliate of Travellustre in Boston, told The Week. The Inca Trail is one direction only, and when the adventure is over you will leave by train or bus.

Do I need to train for the Inca Trail?

Hikers walk by the Urubamba River in Peru's Sacred Valley

Preparation for the hike should start before you leave home

This is a strenuous hike at a high altitude, traversing different landscapes like cloud forests and grasslands. Travelers should expect to travel six to nine miles a day and can train ahead of time by hiking with a pack or getting regular exercise at home. Julie Sudderth of Vivid Getaways in Dallas told The Week she has seen "hikers from 7 to 70 years old command this trail with no problems." The Inca Trail reaches an elevation of 13,800 feet above sea level, making acclimation critical, especially for those who have experienced altitude sickness previously. Concannon recommends spending at least two or three days in Cusco prior to the hike to acclimate better to the altitude.

What kind of experiences can you have on the trail?

A man and a woman watch the sunrise at Machu Picchu

Sunrise on the trail is a beautiful experience

Every trip has one element in common: You must go with an operator and cannot hike on your own. "Normally, the best companies go with the best guides," Sudderth said. "This is invaluable." Good guides "will know when to slow down or quicken the pace as they are actively reading the client’s demeanor," she added, and also "weave the rich history, wildlife and flora and fauna into the hike" while keeping everyone "engaged and motivated. With children especially, this is priceless."

Those who want to go all out can book a private or small group hike, with an expert guide and porters, a well-stocked and clean bathroom tent, gourmet meals and high-quality camping gear, from the pillows to the tents. Midrange experiences are catered toward hikers who do not want a bare-bones trip but also aim to keep costs down, and include nice gear and good food with moderate accommodations.

Concannon warns that when opting for low-cost hiking tours, travelers "need to be cautious to ensure operators are not cutting corners that could negatively impact their experience. Hikers can expect minimal or lesser quality gear and food options to be more minimal. Campsite options could also be less than ideal, with locations lacking in view."

Planning a Trip to Peru? Skip Machu Picchu.

B efore you start trolling me, hear me out. Yes, Machu Picchu is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Yes, it is a breathtaking feat of ancient engineering, a foundational part of Inca history, and incredibly scenic and beautiful. I’m not denying any of that.

But…the mountaintop ruins of Machu Picchu are claustrophobically crowded, seeing 1.2 million annual visitors in a relatively small area. They’re also expensive to visit compared to nearby options and, for anyone who likes novelty, severely scripted. Guides take you on a prescribed loop, recite the same talking points and place a huge emphasis on helping you get the perfect Instagram shot. That’s all fine and well, just not my cup of tea. Perhaps it’s not yours, either.

Alternatively, you could skip Machu Picchu for something off the beaten path. This may sound blasphemous, but, trust me, it’s not.

Tourism is Peru’s third biggest industry and there are plenty of small towns and villages that rely on this income to stay afloat — with the pandemic and recent political unrest , many of them are struggling. To help you visit one of these local hidden gems, here are three different travel ideas near Cusco:

Start By Finding a Knowledgeable Guide

When I was young, cheap and traveled internationally with just a backpack, I never hired a guide. In some ways this is just as appealing today, using the internet as a resource for food, accommodations, and experiences. Yet, over the years I’ve learned that nothing beats local knowledge; even the top travel websites and agencies know far less than those who live, work, and play in these places daily. The value of a guide easily offsets the cost — the experience is much more immersive..

Here’s an Authentic Peruvian Ceviche Recipe You Can Whip Up Stateside

Ceviche, Peru's national dish, is celebrated in the country every summer

A good guide will allow you to enter homes, sit down for meals and eat traditional food, and be part of rituals that have been around for centuries. This is the core reason I travel these days, to search out moments of human connection that bring us closer together. Plus, selfishly, hiring a guide allows me to relax more, without having to worry about juggling logistics, schedules, or bartering in a foreign language.

If you’re heading to Cusco, reach out to Jose Condor and his guiding company, Peru by Locals , which specializes in treks and tours, Incan traditions, medicine, and history, and exploring places that few others know about. Jose grew up in a mountain village near the Sacred Valley and is fluent in Quechua, Spanish, and English. He studied tourism at University and has been guiding for nearly two decades. Below are our top three boutique trip suggestions, for all types of adventures.

Hidden Gems to Explore in Peru

Llama trekking around Rainbow Mountain. For those interested in a multi-day hiking adventure — and a good replacement for the Inca Trail trek to Machu Picchu — a visit to the Cordillera Vilcanota is worth your time. After a three-hour drive from Cusco you’ll arrive at a popular destination called Rainbow Mountain, which opened in 2015. This is what most people come to see, but just the tip of the iceberg for you.

Instead of fighting the crowds on a day hike at Rainbow, the richer way to see this area is trekking with llamas on a two- or three-night adventure. This region is inhabited by small llama and alpaca herding communities who trade with farmers at lower elevations. Jose builds personalized itineraries through the maze of local trails and will bring a small support crew to cook traditional meals, set up and break down camp each day, and facilitate a safe and fun trip. Llama trekking truly is an experience like no other.

Food and culture in the Sacred Valley. For those looking for a slower pace and deeper culinary experience, we recommend an homestay in the Sacred Valley, a region in the Andean highlands. Just an hour north of Cusco, this fertile valley played a crucial role for the Inca, growing most of the maize for the empire. The valley is littered with lesser known archaeological sites to visit, too.

Close to his childhood home and deeply tied in with the local communities, Jose organizes immersive food experiences with local farmers, offering guests a first-hand look at traditional agriculture and, of course, a chance to try delicious Peruvian dishes like Lomo Saltado, Rocoto Relleno and Cuy.

Mountain bike tours near Cusco: For adrenaline seekers, a great way to explore the singletrack trails on the hills surrounding Cusco is by bike. Many of these routes were once Incan footpaths, giving you a chance to ride through ancient history and learn about Incan architecture with Jose as your guide. As an avid mountain biker, Jose guides small groups on custom day tours, accommodating your skill level, schedule, and fitness level. Cusco is based at 11,000, so biking can be challenging!

Final Verdict: Go Off the Beaten Path

While it may sound like heresy to skip Machu Picchu on any trip to Peru, a deeper dive proves otherwise. There are a wide variety of lesser-visited options that give you a more authentic and immersive experience. Whether you’re looking to learn about the history of the Incan Empire, eat traditional food, or experience Peruvian culture, the better decision is to go off the beaten path.

Hiring a guide like Jose Condor unlocks an entirely new suite of options, from llama trekking in the Vilcanota, to spending a day with traditional farmers in the Sacred Valley, or mountain biking ancient footpaths around the Incan capital of Cusco. All you need to decide is which one fits you best.
