KBS tour vs tour lite stiffness? Confusing...

Brokensticks.

Had a fitting and to get the launch up effortlessly I was fitted into a KBS Tour lite S with 86mph 7iron. According to KBS I should be x-stiff but they didnt have it so kinda have to wing it.

What confuses me is reading about the shaft and frequence and I hear that the normal "Tour" in regular is stiffer than Tour Lite Xstiff so now Im very confused in what to actually get.

I liked the Tour Lite way over my Modus105S, finally I feel the club more at D0 than my gamers at D5. Also tried the Modus in another clubhead and first two shots was crazy topping of the ball so I guess its safe to say my actual gamers is a bad match with my swing, atleast thats what Im feeling after a 6 months of trying to tinker. I think Im a smooth loader, basicly setting everything and just unloading in a big arc even if I try to squeeze it at the bottom. I have a few questions before ordering.

1. Will the xstiff tour lite hold up even if I exceed the speed if Im still having my swing? Staying smooth

2. Is regular Tour actually stiffer bend profile? If I could get a 110-115g shaft I would like it but not really feeling Modus120s which is similiar profile.

I would like a little more weight but I wouldnt want it to get looser? Buying Tour in regular just feels weird when into X if the Lite ones...

Why didn't you discuss this with the fitter?

Flex isn't universal, also with steel shafts weight usually adds to flex. You'll probably never see a 130g regular flex shaft unless someone makes a 150g XS.

Did the shaft you test worked as you wanted and you felt comfortable with them?

Not sure where you got that info.  I don't buy it.  Years back I played KBS Tour S flex yet played X100 before, still have them in storage.  KBS Tour are a uniquely smooth shaft   Often people misconstrue a shaft's smoothness as not playing to flex, that's an error in judgment.

My iron SS is 85ish, and I current play "S" flex in any shaft.  But realizing max distance is tied to the shaft's weight.  I do not believe, X-flex profile even in a lighter weight shaft fits me.  Yes, I can make X-flex work, except I can't get maximum distance out of X-flex, yet I can S-flex.

Sounds like you need to try an x flex Tour Lite before you buy. Also, the profile of the Tour Lite is completely different than the Tour.

It’s not like 30 years ago where you were either stiff or regular flex. There are so many shafts, weights, and profiles now.

Its something I came across when reading here and other forums. The fitter didnt know X was rated as 80-85mph.

It felt good but it was the last shaft I tried but still had the same chs. $ taper went abit further with less speed but didnt get the height I wanted

Its info from the forums pointing at KBS trim instructions, the frequence is the same in 120 regular and Lite X.

Got me abit unsure

KBS Experience picks up the phone quickly and gets one of their fitters on the line for these types of questions. I've done so a couple times and they are very helpful. They'll give you a definitive answer. Just not whether you are looking at taper vs parallel (their trim instructions are for parallel) and I don't know if there would be a difference in answer for either.

This gives me immediate concerns.  X swing speed does NOT = Y flex, especially across different weights and profiles. I was fit into Px6.5 2 years ago and have not played “x flex” in 12+ years prior. My fitter looked at many factors beyond SS, and even reassured me when I said.. “PX6.5?!?!” Even funnier (in my own mind) I was fit to play stiff in woods! I always assumed stiffer in woods and “less stiff” in irons.

I came from steelfiber 110S and tried SF110X, X100, modus 120x, PX 6.0 and 6.5. Ultimately got PX6.5 and all those shafts played different. But by looking at things like AoA, spin, clubhead speed, dispersion, etc etc it landed my in those shafts. By ALL my own measures and self perception I would have bought and sold for the rest of my life and never landed on those. The clubs I have now have been by far the best set for me ever, woods and irons.

Apologies for my road trip tangent, but make sure you have an experienced fitter and throw away any preconceptions about what you think you know (unless of course you are an expert fitter or knowledgeable). Not a shot at you just find a reputable fitter and trust the process. Sounds like you may have gotten short changed.

Do not fit by Swing speed = a certain shaft flex.

Weight is #1. This allows the club to be delivered properly and squarely to the ball.

If the KBS tour lite S provided the best numbers and feel. That's the shaft for you.

The shaft manufacturers have those swing speed charts as guidelines. They should not be taken as Gospel.

taylorx300

I doubt you will find a KBS Tour Lite in X flex to test though. Not something the manufactures will offer in their fitting matrix.

I did a fitting there last week and I have to say it was the best fitting I’ve ever had. I was fit by David Anderson. He was great. You can see his style on the kbs fitting videos on Trotties YouTube channel. David is incredibly knowledgeable.

What I picked up during the fitting is that the lite version of each shaft is nothing different than a weight variation of that same profile. In the kbs shaft world, it’s almost an exact correlation of weight = stiffness.

For example, we found that the CTaper was the best profile for me. He quickly determined that I’m extremely weight sensitive. My 7i speed was 87 on a bad shaft matchup, and up to 92 on a good one. So right between S and X in the traditional shaft world. 120g was just a smidge too heavy for me, so he wanted me in the stiffest shaft he could get at 115g.

Enter CTaper Lite 115X. It felt perfect. My next best was CTaper Stiff 120.

In this instance, Stiff 120 is actually stiffer than Lite X 115. We know this because they CPM each shaft in their matrix.

The CT Lite X 115 measured at 309cpm.

CT Stiff 120 measured at 313cpm. Very close but a hair stiffer. Only because the weight is what stiffens it up.

In your instance:

Tour Lite X = 105g

Tour Reg = 110g

OF COURSE ASSUMING WE ARE TALKING TAPER TIP.

So that philosophy checks out if I have remembered correctly.

Regardless, this is my shill to either call KBS X or go get fit there. David was a master. I learned more about my own swing and shaft needs in that session than any other experience I’ve had.

you  can check the website  and see the overlap with  weights

it was more confusing when the 105 was there also

the  105 x was basically  115 and  similar to  tour rplus

seriously 30 minutes on the web site and all will be clear

@Thayneil  what's posted is for the parallel tips, not taper. there might be a difference in butt stiffness between the two, so depends on what OP is looking for. regardless, the info is a quick easy call away.

@Arlin964  thanks for sharing. I've seen the videos and their fitting process does seem impressive. What stood out is that they use the same club connex adapters as CC but KBS drills out 8 granms from the test club hosels so they will be the same weight/feel as what the final build will be. I'd love to do a fitting there at some point.

The info is for taper with parr charts seperate

Basically the light weight shafts are 3.0 in R with the heavier tour shafts 5.0 in r

Hence the tour lite x being the same flex as the Tour R

Parr charts give you the tipping for different flexes with the shaft shaft

The web site is pretty good now and easy to understand after a few looks

@Thayneil  interesting. Where are you seeing that for taper shafts?

Thanks

That’s wild, would definitely be a bummer! Your issue sounds unusual, perhaps even a build issue could be part of it. I find PXG’s clubs are fantastic but you’ll also note on wrx plenty of posts on quality control issues and mistakes with their builds. I know PXG uses parallel tips so it does involve getting the trims right. Having 80 percent fail is a massive rate with any shaft. I’ve not played a shaft as light as the Tour Lite so I don’t know much about it. Could have been a bad batch of shafts. It is hard to say. Did they replace them for you? The Tour Lite has not been recalled by KBS as far as I know.

I do know KBS does not reinforce the tips of their shafts, which is a key part of their great feel. You’ll see complaints about C Taper bent tips. I play that shaft and have not had that happen. So while I recognize KBS is not for everyone, I like the design because IMO KBS is superior on feel to most others. If they reinforce the tips, won’t be the same shaft. I’d stop playing them.

But I imagine there could be a point when the weight gets too light in steel for faster and/or harder swingers, I don’t profess any expert knowledge on that subject. I never heard of issues with the now-replaced Tour 90 (stiff is 102g in that one.) I assumed the Tour Lite stiff is essentially the same as the Tour 90 stiff. Dynamic Gold has stronger tips. The DG 105 is probably more durable but I hate the feel of that shaft. Funny because standard Dynamic Gold feels really nice to me. They seem better with more heft.

This is not an isolated issue, not a swing related issue, not a PXG issue.  Multiple topics here, on facebook and other forums has talked about it.

14 hours ago, PNW said: @Thayneil  interesting. Where are you seeing that for taper shafts?

its actually under  the parallel tipping instructions  but the first table  represents  taper tip  flexes

with kbs   weights  =flexes  so a 110  kbs  tour lite  x  is the same flex  as Tour  R  maybe even the same shaft

Swing speed ranges are recommendations - not ratings.   The shaft doesn't care how fast you swing it and can "hold up"  under significantly more stress and loading than indicated by any swing speed range.   If the shaft didn't break - you didn't overload it.

Butt frequency isn't an accurate representation of what the stiffness feel is going to be for any individual.

The important question is really how well can your swing hold up when you feel the shaft loading more than you're expecting?

Basically if it feels too soft then it likely is too soft and you'd be best of finding something else.   But none of the specs (flex labels, frequency, FCM numbers, bend points, launch characteristics, etc..) are going to help you find the shaft that has the feel that fits your expectations.  The ONLY way to do that is to get out and try different options and see how they feel for you with your swing and what happens to the ball flight.

Stuart again with the best answer to a question! Totally agree.

KBS Tour-V Iron Shaft Review

More in reviews:.

TaylorMade TP5 TP5X Golf Balls

50 Words or Less

The KBS Tour-V iron shaft is designed to be a lighter weight shaft with a mid-trajectory, low spin, and a tight shot dispersion.

KBS-Tour-V-6

Introduction

After riding on the success of the C-Taper and Tour shafts, it was time for KBS to introduce a new option designed to be the best of both worlds.  KBS’s Tour-V was designed to be a shaft that was lighter in weight , but had a stable tip section with less spin which ultimately results in a tighter shot dispersion .  This review will dive into how well KBS executed on this goal.

KBS-Tour-V-4

If you didn’t know any better, you would look at the KBS Tour-V and think it was any other KBS shaft (except the C-Taper).  It’s a basic chrome steel shaft with traditional steps in it and has the signature inconspicuous red and black KBS shaft label.  To the naked eye, the only difference is that the shaft label says Tour-V on it under the KBS logo.  If you want a traditional looking steel shaft in your irons, the Tour-V definitely fits the bill.

KBS-Tour-V-2

It’s important to open this section with our signature “every golfer will have a different experience with different equipment.”  Personally, I think the KBS C-Taper has some of the best feel and response in steel golf shafts, but the KBS Tour-V feels like the other end of the spectrum for me.  Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t feel bad, but it doesn’t have the same response and feel that I love about the C-Taper.  The Tour-V tends to feel a little stout much like the Tour-V wedge shaft and otherwise a little empty.  I often found myself unsure what kind of shot I had just hit until I looked up at the ball.

KBS-Tour-V-1

Performance

When you have feel issues in golf, you’re more often than not going to have performance issues.  The hallmark of the KBS Tour-V shaft is supposed to be an end result of tighter shot dispersion, but the lack of feel made it tough for me to groove the club to get that tight dispersion.  That said, when I was hitting it well, I was getting a good trajectory with more draw than usual  and definitely low spin .  My biggest problem was that I had difficulty knowing when I was hitting that shot or a shot that sort of fizzled out short and didn’t draw.  When I was hitting good shots, that little bit of higher trajectory gave me about eight more yards in distance, plus the rollout from the lower spin.  The Tour-V definitely has potential for a few extra yards if you’re a good fit for the shaft in your irons.

KBS-Tour-V-8

After testing the KBS Tour-V shaft, I have to say that I generally agree with the claims made by KBS.  As always, I strongly encourage you to get properly fit and test the Tour-V shafts before throwing them into your gamers to make sure they deliver in the way you need them to.  You want to be sure that they not only give you the shape and distance you want, but also the control and accuracy you need.

It’s interesting in totally the other way around. I can’t get a feeling with the c taper shafts and it feels really harsh, but I love the tour v. As you say it’s all about fitting

' src=

You do not mention what stiffness you used. I too, have noticed that the shafts can be “hot”every once in a while and go extra far and tend to over draw. Glad to know it was just not me. I am tinkering with the 120x flex. Guessing you tested extra stiff as well? Can you provide more info on that?

Are you using C-tapers right now? I currently use PX 6.0 and they are very playable to me. I dropped sensicores in them and they feel much better. Looking for a shaft that is smooth, workable (but not a lot), no distance loss etc. Pretty much described my 6.0’s but as I get older would be nice to have all of that plus a few extra yards to offset a declining sspeed. Was hoping the V’s or maybe the new LZ’s can do that. Any suggestions?

If you look in the pictures, they were stiff flex. I also didn’t say they were necessarily “hot” or “over drawing.” My point was they were an easy draw for me and that flight with the lack of spin resulted in a few extra yards for me when I hit them consistently well.

I do not play C-Tapers at this time. In regards to the suggestion you’re looking for, it’s very difficult for me to advise. Much of what you are looking for is subjective and will be best determined through a proper fitting. It’s well worth the investment.

Good luck in your shaft choice.

' src=

What’s the difference between the kbs tour v from the kbs tour v 110?

' src=

I’m not familiar with the 110, and it doesn’t appear on the KBS web site. It’s possible that it’s a variant of the Tour V made specifically for a certain OEMs irons.

' src=

The “Tour V 110” is the stiff flex that you tested. It literally says 110 on the shaft. The 110 on the shaft is the weight of the shaft. Are you sure you even tested these?? It also says 110 on the shaft in your pictures. Shouldn’t have been that hard to put two and two together. If you weren’t in such a hurry to tell someone to get fitted with attitude you might have noticed.

Golf Clown,

Perhaps if you weren’t in such a hurry to leave a “gotcha” comment, you’d have noticed that I didn’t write this review, Bill Bush did. He no longer writes for Plugged In Golf, but I try to offer answers to “his” questions where I can.

' src=

Got eeem! 😱 Golf Clown with the L 🤡

' src=

I got fitted with the KBSV 100s, and I noticed my accuracy and dispersion improved twofold. I love them I’m at 10 handicap 57 years old.

KBS Tour 90 Review – Setting A New Standard In Steel Shafts

The story of KBS Tour shafts is the joining of two paths into a committed partnership aiming to establish a new vision of golf shaft performance and design.

FEMCO Steel Technology (FST), the golf branch of the Far East Machinery Co. Ltd, aims to provide high-quality and cost-effective steel products including golf shafts through constant innovation and technological advancements. FST continues to provide high-quality shafts at affordable prices.

Kim Braly designed innovative golf shafts throughout his career. He has validated his designs with golfers playing on the various professional golf tours. Furthermore, Kim used feedback from these golfers in the development of new products.

In 2008 FST America Corporation decided to partner with the most sought-after golf shaft designers to incorporate pioneering designs with its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. This led to the partnership between FST and Kim Braly.

Since its launch, KBS has set a new standard in steel shafts with its unparalleled growth and acclaim.

KBS shafts have grown a significant share of the market and are now used in the irons of most major golfing brands as standard or for custom fitment. It is swiftly turning into the fastest growing steel shaft brand in the industry.

Adopted by over 150 professionals, the KBS Tour shafts have recorded multiple wins including several majors.

KBS Tour 90 Review

  • Stable tip section
  • Higher CG location
  • Firm shaft design
  • Light-weight construction
  • Good trajectory
  • 2-flex system
  • Not suitable for fast tempo golf swings

Design and Technology

As the lightest shaft in the KBS Tour range, the KBS Tour 90 shaft is designed to offer golfers with a slow tempo more spin, a higher trajectory, and distance.  It is 20% lighter than a standard steel shaft thus aiding increasing swing, ball speeds, and distance.

The firm shaft design on the Tour 90 offers a softer tip with a higher center of gravity to create a higher ball trajectory.

Combined with the 2-Flex system on the KBS Tour 90 offer a more flexible than the normal shaft.

Specifications

Tapered tip technical specifications.

Regular shaft flex:

  • Tip diameter .355 inches
  • Butt diameter .600 inches
  • Length 36.5 inches to 40.5inches
  • Available for 2-iron through 9-iron, and PW

Stiff shaft flex:

  • Weight 102g
  • Available for 2-iron through 9-iron

Parallel tip technical specifications

  • Weight 101g
  • Tip diameter .370 inches
  • Length 41.25 inches

.370 Parallel shaft is a single length shaft that will be tip and butt trimmed to your required length which can change how the shaft will play.

For the best feel, you must have a smooth tempo. You can still achieve a high swing speed even if you have a smooth tempo.

With the right tempo, you will receive precise feedback on the impact point of the ball on the clubface. No tingle to your fingers even on the coldest days.

Its kick is remarkably smooth with the right tempo swing but if your tempo is too fast, you are sure to encounter difficulties.

Performance

KBS TOUR 90 is the lightest shaft in the KBS Tour range designed for golfers requiring a higher trajectory, additional spin, and maximum distance.

Performance on the short irons is most noticeable with the wedges and 9-iron generating a high trajectory and more spin. This gives you great green-side control.

Golfers with a moderate-to-slow swing speed and slow tempo will achieve the best performance from the KBS Tour 90.

Independent testing reveals that the KBS Tour 90 to be in the region of 9% longer and generate 5% more spin than its foremost rivals.

Alternatives

Project X LZ Steel - Golf Shafts - Choose Your Flex - Tour Shop Fresno (6 Iron (Steel), (Flex 6.0)(Length 38.5'))

Project X shafts are used on all professional tours and a follow up on the Project X Standard version making it accessible to golfers that have swing speed that is lower than that of professional golfers.

Variable wall thickness creates an extra kick at compact for a mid-launch trajectory without sacrificing stability.

Although this is the closest you will come to a universal shaft, it is highly recommended that you conduct proper testing to ensure that the shaft is suited to your swing.

All shafts measure between 36.5 and 40 inches in length, with a tip diameter of 0.355 inches and a butt diameter of 0.600 inches, and produce a mid-flight launch trajectory.

Weight varies between 110g and 125g with 5g intervals.

Flex is available in R, S, and XS.

Nippon N.S. Pro Modus Wedge Shafts (Choose Flex) - 3 Shaft Bundle (Regular (105g))

Nippon’s comprehensive golf shaft use weight and bend to suit every golf swing and tempo offering improved control over trajectory, distance, and direction.

Nippon excels in three key areas

  • Desired trajectory
  • Accurate distance
  • Tight dispersion

The high tip rigidity design steadies the tip through impact thereby reducing unwanted spin, low mid-section rigidity control shaft flex for enhanced control, and the low butt rigidity improve tempo for a smoother feeling on impact.

Shafts are available in 105g, 120g, 125g, and 130g and R, S, X, TX flex options

The shaft lengths vary between 37 and 41 inches, with a tip diameter of 0.355 inches and a butt diameter of 0.600 inches.

Amalgamating the paths of Kim Braly and FST America Corporation In 2008 was a turning point in the golf shaft industry.

The KBS Tour 90 is 20% lighter than comparable steel shafts and ideally suited for golfers with a moderate swing tempo that requires a higher ball trajectory.

Happy golfing with your higher trajectory.

KBS Tour 105 Shaft Review

Kbs tour 105 shaft.

Not all golf swings are created equal.  That’s a fancy way of saying, “we all swing the club differently.”  As such, a golf shaft will often feel and perform totally different between two different people.  Take, for instance, the KBS Tour iron shaft.  It’s one of the most popular aftermarket steel shafts in the game largely due to its feel.  The thing is, some players want that feel, but need a little less weight with more launch and spin.  KBS created a slightly lighter-weight version of the Tour shaft to promote a higher ball flight and higher spin rates .  That shaft is the KBS Tour 105.

KBS Tour 105 9

How Does it Feel?

This statement is going to be pretty profound, but it’s totally true.  The KBS Tour 105 feels very similar to the standard Tour, but lighter.  There’s a great smooth feel like you’d expect from KBS with a gradual flex profile .  The profile is still somewhat firm with a stiffer tip section to maintain the Tour feel reputation.  It could just be my hands, but the 105 also felt a little more crisp to me as a result of the lighter weight.  The lighter weight also makes the shot feedback a little sharper.  There’s more response from the shaft to your hands, but little impact to the sting factor so your hands are nice and safe.

KBS Tour 105 5

On-Course Performance

In terms of shot shaping and general control, the KBS Tour 105 performed very similar to the Tour.  I had a similar “built-in” draw and was able to manipulate my shot as necessary.   However, I had a very different launch and spin experience.  A good shot would leave the club face with a nice rising flight to a higher peak.  My launch angles were higher, but they weren’t over the top.   Rather than hitting balloons, the Tour 105 allowed me to play a strong flight but with a good rise and a soft landing.  Need to hood one and drive it low?  The Tour 105 will do it if you know how to hit that shot.

One thing I would feel remiss if I were to not mention it is tempo.  There are definite performance benefits to be had with a lighter weight shaft.  You can pick up swing speed, higher ball flights, maybe a more precise response, etc.  BUT, I generally find a lighter shaft is more dependent on just the right tempo.  With the Tour 105, every single bad shot could be traced to bad tempo in my swing.  Typically too aggressive.  As long as I had a nice smooth and easy tempo, I hit an excellent shot.  My point is you need to be aware of your tempo with these lighter shafts.  I believe a smoother tempo is the optimal player for this shaft.

KBS Tour 105 11

Final Thoughts

The KBS Tour 105 really delivers exactly as advertised.  If I made a smooth-tempo swing, I had a strong rising ball flight with enough extra spin to keep the ball in the air and give me a soft landing at my target .  While this performance was quite a bit different for me than the KBS Tour, the Tour 105 is clearly closely related to the original Tour shaft.  In my opinion, the KBS Tour 105 is great for the player that likes the feel of the Tour but wants a little more carry and a higher ball flight .

Would you consider this a high spinning shaft or a mud spinning? Thanks

' src=

100% depends on the player’s swing. If you’re a steep swinger with a lot of speed, it will absolutely spin a lot. If you are shallow with a positive angle of attack and lower speeds, you won’t see an over abundance of speed.

I use these shafts (reg) in my irons and I love them – wondering what kind of driver shaft set up I should use to get best match ? Cheers

That’s a tough one. The reality is that fitting your driver shaft to an iron comparison isn’t going to translate all that well so you really do need to test that independently. At least that’s my thought on it.

Hello and thanks for your article Bill I went after years in kbs 120 flt Stiff for 105 Tour lite S, that is a game changer, so easy to play, my GIR et my score became crazy, i have to share this to shaft’s seekers and… i have a question! The fact this shaft is so good for me can give a tendance in what kind of Drivers shaft can suit me? Is theire any logic to apply? Thanks a lot for your advice if you have time

I’m pretty of the mindset that it’s tough to say “if I hit X in my irons, then Y shaft would be good for my driver”. Chances are you move the clubs a good bit different and really should get fit just the same.

Used by some of the world’s best golfers, KBS shafts are known for their impressive responses and smooth feel. Players looking to get their irons fit for more distance and accuracy need to be testing the KBS Tour shaft. The first thing that stood out to me during my testing of the KBS Tour shaft was the signature feel that Mr. Braly promises. The KBS Tour shaft is one of the easiest shafts to hit and didn’t require my best swing to get a controlled and accurate ball flight. Playing my iron shafts at 125-grams, I tested the Stiff+ model of the KBS Tour shafts. I thought for the majority of golfers, the KBS Tour iron shaft is a fantastic option and would not hesitate to put it into the hands of players with a variety of swing speeds. KBS delivers a golf shaft that is easy to launch and a pleasure to swing. The KBS Tour is one of the best shafts for players that swing below tour-level swing speeds but desire the ultimate control with their irons and wedges. The KBS Tour shafts are truly versatile and great for players with smooth tempos, especially with high and mid-handicaps .

KBS Tour 90 Regular vs Stiff: Are They Different?

Selecting the appropriate shaft flex for your golf clubs is an essential aspect of optimizing your performance on the course.

The KBS Tour 90 shaft, a popular choice among golfers, is available in both regular and stiff flex options.

In this comparison, I will be looking at how the KBS Tour 90 Stiff compare with the Regular shafts .

You’ll learn how much difference they have in terms of swing speed, ball flight, and performance so you can make an informed decision.

KBS Tour 90 Regular vs Stiff: How They Compare

Swing speed and shaft flex.

The most critical factor in determining the ideal shaft flex is your swing speed.

The KBS Tour 90 Regular shaft is designed for golfers with moderate swing speeds, typically ranging from 75 to 90 miles per hour (mph) with a driver.

This flex option accommodates players who require additional assistance in generating optimal launch and spin conditions to maximize their distance potential.

KBS Tour 90 Regular vs Stiff

Conversely, the KBS Tour 90 Stiff shaft is tailored to golfers with faster swing speeds , typically between 90 and 105 mph with a driver.

This stiffer flex is better suited for players who generate higher clubhead speeds and require a more stable and consistent shaft to maintain control and accuracy.

Ball Flight and Spin

The KBS Tour 90 Regular shaft, with its softer flex, is engineered to produce a higher ball flight with increased spin.

This trajectory is beneficial for golfers with moderate swing speeds who need additional help in achieving optimal carry distances and soft landings on the greens.

The higher spin rates associated with the regular flex can also provide increased control around the greens and during approach shots.

KBS Tour 90 Regular vs Stiff

However, the KBS Tour 90 Stiff shaft yields a more penetrating ball flight with reduced spin.

This lower trajectory is advantageous for golfers with faster swing speeds, as it minimizes the impact of wind and other adverse conditions on ball flight.

The reduced spin rates can also result in more roll-out after landing, potentially increasing overall distance.

Feel and Stability

The KBS Tour 90 Regular shaft offers a more flexible and responsive feel, which can be advantageous if you prefer a smoother, effortless swing.

The regular flex also enables you to load the shaft more effectively during the downswing. This will translate to increased energy transfer at impact and maximized distance potential.

On the other hand, the KBS Tour 90 Stiff shaft provides a firmer, more stable feel. The increased stability enables more advanced players to maintain better control of their shots, ensuring accuracy and consistency.

So, if you fancy a more solid, crisp feel at impact, you may find the stiff flex more appealing.

Performance

The performance characteristics of the KBS Tour 90 Regular and Stiff shafts can vary in different playing conditions.

In windy situations, the higher ball flight and increased spin generated by the regular flex may be less advantageous. This is because the ball may be more susceptible to the wind’s influence.

KBS Tour 90 Regular or Stiff

However, in calm conditions or on softer courses, the higher trajectory and spin rates can be beneficial in producing precise approach shots and stopping the ball quickly on the greens.

The KBS Tour 90 Stiff shaft’s lower ball flight and reduced spin can be advantageous in windy or firm conditions.

The penetrating trajectory minimizes the impact of wind and maximizes roll-out on firmer fairways.

Unfortunately, the lower spin rates may make it more challenging to stop the ball quickly on firm greens or during high-pressure approach shots.

Choosing between the KBS Tour 90 Regular and Stiff shafts hinges on factors such as swing speed, playing style, and performance preferences.

The regular flex is better suited for golfers with slower swing speeds who require assistance in generating optimal launch and spin conditions, and who prefer a more flexible, responsive feel.

The higher ball flight and increased spin rates provided by the regular flex can contribute to enhanced control and precision in various playing conditions, particularly on softer courses or during approach shots.

On the other hand, the stiff flex is ideal for golfers with faster swing speeds who demand increased stability and control in their shafts.

The penetrating ball flight and reduced spin rates offered by the stiff flex can be advantageous in any playing condition, while also catering to players who appreciate a firmer, more solid feel at impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

What speed should i use stiff vs regular flex.

Choosing between stiff and regular flex for your golf club largely depends on your swing speed. Here are the general guidelines:

  • Regular Flex: Typically, if your driver swing speed is between 85 and 95 miles per hour, or if you carry a driver distance of 200 to 240 yards, a regular flex shaft could be suitable. Regular flex can help moderate swing speed players add distance through additional flex in the shaft at impact.
  • Stiff Flex: If your driver swing speed is between 95 and 110 miles per hour, or you carry a driver distance of 240 to 275 yards, a stiff flex might be more appropriate. Players with higher swing speeds generally benefit from stiffer shafts to help control accuracy and trajectory.

Remember, these are just general guidelines, and there can be exceptions.

Are stiff shafts better?

The question of whether stiff shafts are “better” largely depends on your swing characteristics and golfing abilities.

Stiff shafts are typically better for golfers with faster swing speeds (generally, those with driver swing speeds above 95 miles per hour).

This is because a faster swing can cause a more flexible shaft to bend excessively, leading to inconsistent shot direction and potentially reducing control over the shot.

However, for players with slower swing speeds, a stiff shaft could lead to lower ball flights and shorter distances, because the shaft doesn’t flex enough to help create optimal launch conditions.

Can beginners use stiff shafts?

While a beginner golfer can use a stiff shaft, it might not be the optimal choice for most.

The flex of a golf club shaft has a significant impact on the control, accuracy, and distance of shots, and it should match the golfer’s swing speed and style.

Typically, beginner golfers have slower swing speeds as they are still developing their golf swing mechanics. In such cases, a regular or even a senior might be more suitable.

Review: KBS Tour FLT Shafts

kbs tour extra stiff

Pros:  FLT shafts use a flighted design, which helps golfers launch their long irons higher and with more spin. The FLT short-iron shafts provide a more penetrating trajectory for more control.

Cons: FLT shaft flexes correspond with weight, so golfers may not be able to match their desired shaft weight with their desired flex.

Who They’re For: Golfers who need more spin or more launch from their long irons to optimize their trajectory. Everyone from beginners to PGA Tour players can use the shafts effectively, but they’ll be most popular with golfers with moderate-to-slow swing speeds, or any golfer who generates low-spin launch conditions.

Selecting the proper iron shafts is one of the most important equipment decisions golfers make. It’s an issue of quantity. Most golfers carry about 7-8 irons in their bag, so if they choose the wrong iron shaft, they’ve made the game harder than it needs to be with half or more of their clubs.

The good news is that there’s a wider selection of quality iron shafts than there has ever been, with recent growth in models that are designed to help golfers hit their iron shots higher and farther, while still maintaining PGA Tour-quality consistency and feel.

KBS is one of the leading steel shaft manufacturers, and already offered a wide variety of models prior to its newest shaft launch. Company representatives felt KBS was lacking a product for a particular segment of golfers, however, so it developed its new FLT shafts.

KBS_FLT

FLT shafts ($31.95 each) have a flighted design, which helps certain golfers optimize the performance of each iron their bag. The long irons shafts have progressively softer tip sections, which helps golfers increase their launch angle and spin rates with those clubs. For the right golfer, the design will help them hit their iron shots farther, and stop shots on the green more quickly. In the short irons, where height and spin are easier for golfers to generate, the FLT shafts are stiffer, which creates the flatter trajectory most golfers prefer with their scoring clubs. The crossover point between the higher-launching long irons and lower-launching short irons is the 7 iron.

Like all KBS shafts, FLT models have a constant weight, which means that long iron shafts and short iron shafts will be roughly the same weight through the set. Shaft weight is dependent on flex, however, as softer-flex models are lighter than stiffer-flex models. So if you’re looking for a really heavy, regular-flex shaft or a really light, extra-stiff-flex shaft, these aren’t for you.

KBS_FLT_Shaft_Specs

Keep in mind that KBS shafts do not have reinforced tip sections like many other iron shafts, which gives them a slightly higher balance point and can decrease swing weight by 1-2 points. I personally like the feel of KBS shafts and their slightly higher balance point, but some golfers won’t.

For this review, I tested the new FLT shafts head to head against KBS Tour shafts of the same flex and weight (130X) in 4 irons, 6 irons and pitching wedges. Each of the shafts were installed in Callaway’s Apex Pro ’16 irons , and were built to my specifications (standard grips, standard length, 1-degree strong lofts, 1-degree flat lie angles).

KBSTour130Shafts

I performed my testing at the Launch Pad at Carl’s Golfland in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., where I hit the 4 irons, 6 irons and pitching wedges on Trackman IV with premium golf balls. I hit 3-6 solid shots with each iron, and then removed the outliers from the final data in an attempt to compare only the most similar strikes. Results were normalized.

As you can see from the data, there was a significant difference in the flight of the 4 irons with the two different shafts, but less of a difference with the 6 irons and pitching wedges.

Apex_Pro_Test_heads

As expected, the FLT shafts caused 4 iron shots to launch higher (0.8 degrees) and with more spin (729 rpm) than the KBS Tour shafts. I’m not a low-spin player, which is one of the target audiences for this shaft, so the added launch and spin of the FLT shafts caused my 4 iron shots to fly shorter. Golfers who launch their irons too low or with too little spin, however, will likely see a distance increase when using the FLT shafts.

As I moved closer to the short end of the set, the two shafts started to perform more similarly. Theoretically, the 6 iron shots with the FLT shafts should have launched slightly higher and spun more than 6 iron shots with the KBS Tour shafts, but I actually saw a slightly lower launch angle (0.5 degrees) with the FLT. The spin was higher, though, by 211 rpm. With the pitching wedges, the results were again quite similar. The FLT launched 0.9 degrees higher, but actually spun 271 rpm less than the KBS Tour shafts.

KBS_Tour_KBS_FLT

Stepping back from the numbers, I was impressed with how similar the feel was between the KBS Tour and FLT shafts. Yes, I could feel that the FLT shafts were more active in the tip with the 4 irons, but they felt nearly the same in the 6 irons. By the time I got to the pitching wedges, the two shafts were indistinguishable. The KBS Tour is considered one of the better-feeling iron shafts currently available, so KBS’ ability to replicate that feel in the FLT will be a plus for the majority of interested golfers.

Looking more broadly, trends in shaft design tends to go hand-in-hand with trends in club head design, and the FLT shafts are no exception. Equipment manufacturers continue to strengthen the lofts of their distance irons; they have to in order balance the launch equation, as their faster ball speeds create a higher launch angle and more spin.

While the improvements to iron design have allowed golfers to hit their mid and short irons farther, many golfers continue to struggle to hit their long irons high enough or consistently enough for them to be effective. And based on my testing results, it’s clear that the FLT shafts can make long irons more playable for certain golfers, and maybe even keep long irons in a golfer’s bag that might otherwise be kicked out for higher-flying hybrids or fairway woods.

As always, I recommend that golfers get properly fit for iron shafts, which means visiting a reputable club fitter in your area. So if you’re in the market for new irons or iron shafts, you can get started by going through KBS’ Online Fit System , which upon completion lists KBS-certified dealers in your area.

How is it a joke? Seems logical….updated version of the old rifle flighted…..instead of decending weight it’s constant weight. With KBS signature feel a stability and step pattern…And I’m sure the bent tip jokes will be coming at some point. But I’ve enjoyed the set I have especially with my PXG irons.

Jun 27, 2016 at 7:12 am

Look at the real life numbers for the 6 iron and pw.6 iron was meant to go higher and pw lower but both didnt. Thats why its a joke.

Jun 27, 2016 at 11:31 am

From the description it’s designed for people who have issues launching the ball with longer irons and lower with the shorter irons. Obviously the writer isn’t the target audience and stated that. So your ignorance is the joke and why it’s important to get fit. Instead of being a know it all like yourself.

Insider photos from tiger woods’ launch event for his new “sun day red” apparel line.

kbs tour extra stiff

On Monday evening, inside the swanky, second-story “Coach House” event center in the Palisades Village, just minutes down the road from the 2024 Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club, Tiger Woods and TaylorMade officially announced their new apparel/footwear/accessory line, called “Sun Day Red.”

The Sun Day Red website officially launched on Monday night during the event, and the products are set to go on sale starting May 1.

The “Sun Day Red,” or “SDR” name will be self-explanatory for most golf fans, since he’s been wearing a victory-red shirt on Sunday’s for his entire professional career, but Woods explained the meaning of Sun Day Red at the launch event:

“It started with mom. Mom thought – being a Capricorn – that my power color was red, so I wore red as a junior golfer and I won some tournaments. Lo and behold, I go to a university that is red; Stanford is red. We wore red on the final day of every single tournament, and then every single tournament I’ve played as a professional I’ve worn red. It’s just become synonymous with me.”

The Sunday Red outfit has worked to perfection for his 82 PGA Tour victories, including 15 majors, so why not make an entire apparel line based on the career-long superstition?

As I learned at Monday’s launch event, the new Sun Day Red line includes much more than just clothing. To go along with a slew of different golf shirt designs and colorways, there were also windbreakers, hoodies, shoes, hats, headcovers, ball markers and gloves on display.

The upscale event was hosted by sports media personality Erin Andrews, with special guests David Abeles (CEO of TaylorMade) and Tiger Woods himself.

As explained by Abeles, the Sun Day Red brand is an independently-run business under the TaylorMade umbrella, and is based in San Clemente, California (rather than Carlsbad, where TaylorMade headquarters is located), and it’s run by a newly-formed, independent group. Brad Blackinship, formerly of Quiksilver and RVCA, is the appointed president of the new brand.

As for the logo itself, obviously, it’s made to look like a Tiger (the animal), and is comprised of 15 tiger stripes, which correspond with Woods’ 15 major championships. While the logo may need a 16th stripe if Woods adds a major trophy to his collection, it makes perfect sense for the time being.

The golf/lifestyle line is meant to combine premium precision and athletic comfort, while still having plenty of wearability and style off the course. Like Woods said on stage at the event, he wants to be able to go right from the course to dinner wearing Sun Day Red, and that was exactly the aesthetic on display at the event on Monday.

Following the official announcement from Woods and Abeles, they revealed multiple pieces of clothing, accessories and footwear for the event-goers to ogle (and photograph). Check out a selection of product/event photos below, or head over to our @GolfWRX Instagram page for video coverage…OR, head into our GolfWRX Forums for even more photos and member discussion.

Titleist launches new Vokey WedgeWorks 60 “A” grind wedge

kbs tour extra stiff

The menu of grind options just got more expansive for Titleist Vokey WedgeWorks consumers, with the addition of a “60A” wedge to the lineup.

Previously, Vokey offered seven main grind options for players with various needs :

  • T Grind: The narrowest sole option, which is widely used by PGA Tour players, and has low bounce
  • L Grind: The lowest bounce option, with heel, toe and trailing edge relief for maximum versatility
  • F Grind: An all-purpose grind that’s best for full wedge shots played with a square face
  • S Grind: A neutral grind, best for full shots played with a square face
  • M Grind: A versatile grind that’s for players who want to open and close the face for various shots
  • D Grind: A higher-bounce wedge that’s for players with a steep swing angle, but want to play shots from various club orientations
  • K Grind: The highest-bounce wedge option, with heel, toe and trailing edge relief for versatility

Titleist has now added the “A” grind, which has actually already been played on the PGA Tour by golfers such as Tom Kim, who used an A-grind to win three times on the PGA Tour, Wyndham Clark, who won the U.S. Open using an A-grind, and Max Homa, who used an A-grind at the 2023 Open Championship.

kbs tour extra stiff

According to Titleist, the Vokey WedgeWorks 60A wedge is a low-bounce option that’s for golfers with a shallow angle of attack, and who play in firmer conditions. It has a “smoothed-out” sole for a faster feel through the turf, helping some golfers slide under the ball easier at impact.

“The most important club for me, probably in my bag, is this A grind,” Clark said, according to a Titleist press release. “I use the SM9 60-degree A grind, which is a low bounce 60 that is very versatile. I’m able to – on tight lies, rough, wet lies, firm lies, whatever it is – hit the shot I want, and with the amount of spin I want, trajectory and everything.”

kbs tour extra stiff

Apparently, Geoff Ogilvy played a large part in the A-grind coming to life.

“I spoke with Geoff (Ogilvy), and we got on the topic of Australian golf courses and how they compared to courses in America, and around the world,” said Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill, in a press release. “I asked him some specific questions, which resulted in an idea to design another lob wedge grind option that complemented the firm links-style conditions that players face – not just in Australia and Europe – but globally. Geoff has always been a low bounce player in his 60-degree, so I took his 60.04L wedge and removed the ribbon, resulting in a grind that moves through the turf quickly with very little resistance.”

kbs tour extra stiff

The new Vokey A-grind will be available on Nov. 7, selling for $225 each. Custom options include up to six toe engravings, 10-15 character stamping options, the Flight Line alignment feature option, and custom shafts/grips/ferrules are available.

GolfWRXers put the Full Swing KIT’s accuracy to the test

kbs tour extra stiff

Last month, four GolfWRX forum members traveled to The Grand Golf Club at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar in San Diego, California, to test the Full Swing KIT launch monitor and to see how it stacks up against other launch monitors. If you’re not familiar with the Full Swing KIT , development began when Tiger Woods requested a launch monitor he could trust on the range as much as he trusted his Full Swing simulator in his own home. Later, the KIT earned Tiger’s seal of approval and has been seen with him at every tournament he’s played in since its release.

GolfWRX members on the KIT’s accuracy

zap311: “The Full Swing team seems obsessed with accuracy when it comes to the KIT – The team talked about how this product officially shipped about 18 months ago and they are already on firmware release #20. They said they are regularly releasing updates (overnight via WiFi) to continuously improve accuracy and performance. That is pretty awesome and it’s nice to hear that they are not a company that “ships it” and moves to the next thing. I think they are on the right track since I saw virtually no differences in the data when testing vs. GCQuad and Trackman today.”

double or triple?: “In some cases the difference was less than half a degree on launch and less than 50 rpms on spin.”

hatrick11: “The differences were statistically nonexistent. I think it’s hard to believe for a lot of people when you think about the huge price disparity, but I can’t state enough how close the Full Swing was to trackman every single time, for each of us.”

“Outside, the data is just really really accurate. I know my numbers and know this particular range very well and the KIT was spot on all day. I also had some very variable quality golf balls in the bucket I hit and there was really only one spin rate in the whole session that had me raising my eyebrows at all.”

SwingBlues: “The GolfWRX Full Swing/WRX Experience showed Full Swing KIT produce numbers the same as the GC Quad (GC4) and the Trackman4. Dollar wise, both LMs are easily north of KIT, so this is HUGE to stand up there with the bigger boys on the Podium. For me, it seems more “apples to apples” to compare KIT to GC3. My own testing validates what we saw at the Experience. It shows critical data points like spin, carry, ball speeds are dead on or almost dead on for 40 yards and up on both GC3 and KIT.”

More on the Full Swing KIT

zap311: “The versatility of viewing data is impressive – Depending on usage, everyone has different preferences for viewing data. You have on-device, phone, tablet, monitor, smartwatch, or audio/headphones. I’m pleased to say that Full Swing covers all of these. You can use the app on iOS devices (they said Android is planned for the future). This includes viewing your last shot on the Apple Watch with a few options and turning on audio playback of your preferred metrics following each shot. I’ll post screenshots of this later. You can also choose between 4 data points or 1 data point on the device itself. It was easy to use the app to customize the top 4. For example, I was able to quickly change from launch angle on irons to swing path on driver.

“The KIT was very easy to use – Once you spend a few minutes learning the app and settings, it is very simple to select a club, line up the target line, and fire away. You don’t have to use a level or a laser to line up. KIT uses the built-in camera to tell you where to line up within the app or on-device screen. I was also able to boot up the KIT in less than a minute and drop it down on the tee box for our on-course trial today. Because of this simplicity, I can see it being more practical to bring to the course…

“The Full Swing team really thought through usability for the KIT. You can see up to four data points on the device’s OLED screen. You can see all 16 data points on your iPhone/iPad along with a video replay of the shot, you can view one primary metric from your Apple Watch, and you can enable audio playback for any of the 16 data points. For me, this was a dream as a full iOS user. One other feature I like is that you can star a particular shot to save it. You can also send shot data + the video recording to your coach if you want.”

double or triple?: “I was able to meet the teaching pro at the range I’m using for testing – PGA teacher/member Ryan Kolk. He and his team have 4 units amongst themselves and use them both personally and with their students during lessons. Ryan spent time dialing in his knowledge of the range balls vs proV1x (gamer) to better understand the FSK and he believes the consistency is there with the FSK and within trackman and GC/Foresight models. His preference is to use FSK while testing shafts and new product before using them in his personal playing bag which as a GolfWRX member is 100% appreciated. For his better students, he believes the information like Face to Path and Club Path that FullSwing Kit offers is great to help them understand what their swing is doing and use that information to better themselves.”

hatrick11: “It’s nice to know I can get super useful practice sessions in at my house, and can do in in ~20 min stints; with two little kids at home I can’t just go out for frequent or lengthy range sessions, so this is super valuable and I think will help me keep my game from degrading and allow me to spend my limited free time enjoying the occasional round with friends. In particular with the KIT, as opposed to the cheaper monitors or the other “mid tiers” like GC3, seeing path and face-to-path data is the key item that makes my practice sessions useful…when I am grooving it my path is almost always between 0-2* out to in, with face control being the main thing I need to work on. When my game goes sideways I start coming more in to out, and combined with face consistency being an ongoing issue, that brings the bad left miss into play. Previously I have struggled getting real use out of net practice, because the feels don’t always match reality. This data and video evidence really helps keep me honest, so it was great to see that I was eventually able to get that piece dialed in with KIT.”

SwingBlues: “One feature I am really starting to like is how easy to see the video of each shot. My buddy was not hitting it well, we went to the video and we could see the takeway was too far to the outside.”

“Using the app, it will display all 16 data points. Below is an example of one of my iron shots. Pretty impressive data captured by KIT. On KIT itself, the launch monitor display can be configured to show a single data point, or it can show a grid of 4 data points where the golfer choose which ones to display!”

Head over to the thread for more comments, reviews, and future updates as our members continue to test the Full Swing KIT. Don’t forget to become a member today for future opportunities like this, plus product member testing and giveaways!

KBS Tour Lite Vs Nippon Modus 105 Shaft Comparison Overview

KBS Tour Lite Vs Nippon Modus 105 Shaft

I can remember a time when we didn’t have a plethora of lightweight steel iron shafts to choose from.

Now, the market seems to be flooded with them. While it may sound like I’m complaining, I’m really not.

Frankly, the glut of lightweight steel shafts excites me – especially as Father Time is starting to slow my swing speed down.

Today we’ll be taking a look at a couple of steel shafts that would be great for players switching from graphite to steel – or simply players like me who are experiencing a decline in swing speed.

KBS Tour Lite Shaft Overview

KBS TOUR LITE2

“For the taper tip option, you can choose regular flex (95g), stiff flex (100g), and extra stiff flex (105g).”

As you can see from the numbers above, this is a really light shaft. When we tested it, almost all of our testers remarked at how light it felt from backswing to follow-through.

For some of us, it was too light and felt too insubstantial.

Indeed, there was some variance at impact which led to some erratic ball flight and wide dispersion.

The spin rates were on the high side which helped with stopping power.

The KBS Tour Lite manages to feel exceptionally smooth though – so smooth that it was sometimes hard to tell when we mis-hit.

Compared to the Nippon Modus 105 shaft, the KBS Tour Lite also launched a bit higher.

Nippon Modus 105 Shaft Overview

Nippon Modus 105 Shaft1

“The Nippon Modus 105 is available in regular flex (103g), stiff flex (106.5g), and extra stiff flex (112g).”

Right away, the Nippon Modus 105 shaft felt stabler and more steady in the hands. A lot of that variance at impact was eliminated which led to tighter dispersion for me and most of our testing party.

While the Nippon Modus 105 is heavier than the Tour Lite, digging or thinning the ball was never a problem.

It was very easy to fall into a groove with this shaft. What’s more is that there is just enough heft in the shaft to help you keep track of the club head; but not enough heft that it slows your swing speed.

“In my eyes, the KBS Tour Lite would only be the better option if your swing speed has really slowed down or if you are a beginner/high handicap player.

Otherwise, the Nippon Modus 105 is the superior lightweight steel shaft option.”

Nippon Modus 105 First Impressions

Nippon Modus 105 Shaft2

The first thing that will strike most players is how consistent these lightweight shafts are.

The launch is no shocker; but the tight dispersion on all shots and even loading on all swings are what really stand out.

Key Features & Performance

The lightweight appointments are really what give this shaft its character.

It’s accessible and will help you improve your distance by about half a club.

Nippon Modus 105 Iron Review

Up to the 9-iron you get really strong trajectory and consistent spin/launch. It’s easy to get the ball in the air and you get a very smooth transition.

Nippon Modus 105 Wedge Review

The spin and launch really come in handy when you’re playing from a tight lie but still want to be aggressive.

KBS Tour Lite First Impressions

KBS TOUR LITE2

The first thing we noticed about these shafts was that they were incredibly light for steel shafts.

The weight is the key feature here. It allows for improved club head speed without losing any accuracy.

KBS Tour Lite Wedges Review

We weren’t huge fans of the KBS Tour Lite on wedges because they covered up a lot of our mis-hits.

KBS Tour Lite Irons Review

The KBS Tour Lite is perfect for irons. It will tighten up your shot dispersion and help increase club head speed.

KBS Tour Lite Driver Review

There isn’t enough substance for the KBS Tour Lite shafts to be viable for drivers.

Nippon Modus 105 Pros & Cons

  • Consistent performance
  • Good for a wide variety of players
  • Smooth feel
  • Lightweight
  • Easy to swing
  • Relatively high spin

KBS Tour Lite Pros & Cons

  • Good vibration dampening
  • Good for a variety of players
  • The smooth feel sometimes covers up his-hits

Who Should Buy it?

The Nippon Modus 105 would fit a wide array of players but we would highly recommend it to mid/high handicappers.

In fact, mid handicappers probably have the most to gain.

Nippon Modus 105 Shaft1

Overall Score: 97/100

KBS Tour Lite Shaft Review: How Does This Lightweight Shaft Perform In [2024!?

With a huge number of people using the KBS Tour Lite shaft , I’ve always wondered how the shaft performs well for so many different swing speeds. Hence, I decided to test the Tour Lite, and here’s what I found:

In short, while the shaft performs great and fits a wide range of swing speeds , the feel of the shaft might be off for some golfers.

Why Consider the KBS Tour Lite Shaft?

KBS Tour Lite Shaft

When you have medium to high swing speed but you’re not comfortable with heavy shafts, consider the KBS Tour Lite shaft.

It’s a perfect match for players wanting accuracy and maximum control over their shots without sacrificing the distance.

The shaft is also very forgiving during mishits and has a solid feel required for higher launch angles.

KBS Tour Lite Specifications

  • Available Flex Options: Regular, Stiff, Extra-Stiff
  • Weight: 95g, 100g, 105g
  • Suitable for Clubs: 2-iron to 9-iron, SW, PW
  • Length: 37 inches to 40.5 inches
  • Finish: Chrome

Testing the KBS Tour Lite

For the on-field testing, I hit 15 shots with each flexibility option available for the Tour Lite. As my swing speed is around 100 mph, the Extra Stiff version suited me more.

Apart from that, I also tried the shaft with my irons, wedges, and driver to provide you with all-round performance feedback.

My Experience with the KBS Tour Lite

My Experience with the KBS Tour Lite

What impressed me most about the KBS Tour Lite was how easily I could swing the club with less effort than its heavier counterparts. The shaft was stable and had a smooth feel at impact.

Thanks to its high kick point, the shaft didn’t twist much, and I got my preferred angles. The ball spin was high, and it wasn’t difficult to hit the greens.

However, the shaft isn’t suitable for my driver or wedges as I didn’t like how the shaft feels with these club heads.

performance reviews of KBS Tour Lite Shaft

After elaborate testing and comparing the data, here’s how well the shaft holds up:

Range (5 Stars)

With 3 different flexibility options and reduced weight for each, the KBS Tour Shaft fits almost everyone, from amateurs to fast swingers. Numerous professional golfers use it while many entry-level players also find it easy to swing and get the right ball speed and precision.

Look and Finish (4 Stars)

With a shiny chrome finish, the Tour Lite has a classy look. The silver shaft has red engravings that blend perfectly. The chrome finish will last for a long time and prevent chipping. Although I prefer a more eye-catchy shaft, some golfers like the toned-down look of the Tour Lite.

Launch Angle and Accuracy (4.5 Stars)

As you can transfer maximum weight to this lightweight shaft, the Tour Lite allows you to launch at higher angles. During my testing, the ball hit exactly where I wanted and landed at steeper angles.

Carry Distance and Ball Spin (4.7 Stars)

One of the strongest merits of the Tour Lite is the extra carry distance it offers despite shedding off some weight. On the course, I was getting 10 to 15 yards extra carry and the ball spin was also high. Therefore, the shots were consistently accurate.

Forgiveness and Workability (4 Stars)

With the KBS Tour Lite, you can forget about the irritating shaft vibration when you miss the sweet spot of the club. The shaft dampens the noise and vibration for mishits and provides a clean sound and smooth feel.

However, not everyone is a fan of it, especially those who prefer to distinguish their mishits to improve their game. Moreover, while the shaft worked great for my irons, it didn’t perform well with my drivers.

KBS Tour Lite reviews

Who Are the KBS Tour Lite Shafts For?

  • Golfers Generating 80 mph or Lower Swing Speed: The Regular flex is a great option for a solid feel and greater carry distance.
  • Golfers Generating 80-90 mph Swing Speed: Should pick the Stiff flex for tighter dispersion and Improved accuracy.
  • Golfers Generating 100 mph+ Swing Speed: Extra Stiff Tour Lite shaft for a balance of speed and control.

Alternatives to Consider

If the KBS Tour Lite doesn’t match your playing style, here are two alternatives you can consider:

Nippon Modus 105

  • Lightweight design for increased swing speed
  • Consistent feel to improve accuracy
  • Good balance of distance and control
  • Mid-spinning; strong flight trajectory
  • Not as aggressive as some other high-performance shafts

Project X LZ

  • Low-launch profile offers maximum control and reduced unwanted ballooning
  • Robust construction and incredibly stable feel
  • Spin reduction for longer distance
  • Lightweight and easy to load
  • Can be too stiff for some golfers

final Verdict on our KBS Tour Lite Shaft Review

The KBS Tour Lite is an excellent shaft for golfers who want to gain more distance on the green. If you’re struggling with slow swing speed and less control, this shaft is an ideal choice.

High launch, lighter weight, more ball spin, etc., are some added benefits that make it appealing to diverse golfers. However, for swing speeds over 105 mph+, the Tour Lite might deliver erratic performance.

What is a KBS Tour Lite Shaft?

The KBS Tour Lite Shaft is a high-performance golf shaft designed to enhance the performance of golfers of all skill levels. This shaft is specifically engineered for players who require a lighter weight shaft without sacrificing control and feel. With its innovative design and exceptional performance, the KBS Tour Lite Shaft has become a popular choice among golfers looking to improve their game.

Definition and Features

The KBS Tour Lite Shaft is crafted using the latest technology and premium materials to deliver outstanding performance on the golf course. This shaft is made from a combination of steel and graphite, resulting in a lightweight yet durable construction. The use of both materials allows for optimal weight distribution and increased stability during the swing.

One of the standout features of the KBS Tour Lite Shaft is its unique flex rating system . This system categorizes the shafts into different flex options, ranging from R (Regular) to X (Extra Stiff), allowing golfers to choose the flex that best suits their swing speed and playing style. This flexibility in selecting the right flex ensures that every golfer can achieve maximum performance and distance with the KBS Tour Lite Shaft.

Additionally, the KBS Tour Lite Shaft is designed with a low kick point, which promotes a higher launch angle and increased ball speed. This combination of a lightweight design and optimal kick point allows golfers to generate more distance and accuracy with their shots. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned pro, the KBS Tour Lite Shaft offers the perfect balance of power and control.

Benefits of Using KBS Tour Lite Shaft

Using the KBS Tour Lite Shaft can significantly improve your performance on the golf course. Here are some of the key of using this exceptional golf shaft:

  • Increased Distance and Accuracy : The lightweight design and optimal weight distribution of the KBS Tour Lite Shaft allow for increased swing speed and improved ball contact. This translates into longer distances off the tee and greater accuracy on approach shots. With this shaft in your hands, you’ll be able to hit the ball further and with more precision, giving you a competitive edge on the course.
  • Improved Control and Feel : The KBS Tour Lite Shaft offers exceptional control and feel, allowing golfers to confidently shape their shots and maneuver the ball with ease. The combination of the shaft’s flex rating system and low kick point provides a responsive and consistent feel throughout the swing. This level of control gives golfers the confidence to take on challenging shots and execute their desired shot shape.
  • Enhanced Launch and Trajectory : The KBS Tour Lite Shaft is specifically designed to optimize launch angle and trajectory. The low kick point of the shaft promotes a higher ball flight, enabling the ball to stay in the air longer and land softly on the green. This feature is particularly beneficial for players who struggle with generating enough height and distance with their irons. With the KBS Tour Lite Shaft, you’ll be able to hit higher, more penetrating shots that stop quickly on the green.

Performance of KBS Tour Lite Shaft

When it comes to the performance of the KBS Tour Lite Shaft, golfers can expect a range of benefits that can greatly enhance their game. This shaft is designed to provide increased distance and accuracy, improved control and feel, as well as enhanced launch and trajectory. Let’s take a closer look at each of these aspects.

Increased Distance and Accuracy

One of the key advantages of using the KBS Tour Lite Shaft is its ability to deliver increased distance and accuracy off the tee. The shaft is engineered with advanced materials and technology that promote a higher launch angle and lower spin rate, resulting in longer drives. By reducing the amount of spin, the ball is able to fly straighter and with less deviation, leading to improved accuracy.

Golfers who struggle with distance off the tee will find that the KBS Tour Lite Shaft can help them gain those extra yards without sacrificing control. The lightweight design of the shaft allows for increased swing speed, generating more power and distance. This combination of added distance and improved accuracy can make a significant difference in a golfer’s overall performance on the course.

Improved Control and Feel

In addition to increased distance and accuracy, the KBS Tour Lite Shaft also offers improved control and feel. The shaft’s design incorporates a softer flex profile, providing a responsive and consistent feel throughout the swing. This allows golfers to have better control over their shots, especially when it comes to shaping the ball flight.

The KBS Tour Lite Shaft’s responsive nature also enhances the golfer’s ability to feel the clubhead throughout the swing, allowing for better feedback and a more connected swing. This improved connection between the golfer and the club can result in more consistent strikes and better shot dispersion.

Enhanced Launch and Trajectory

Another notable feature of the KBS Tour Lite Shaft is its ability to enhance launch and trajectory. The shaft’s unique design promotes a higher launch angle, allowing the ball to get up in the air quickly and with ease. This can be particularly beneficial for golfers who struggle with getting the ball airborne or have a slower swing speed.

The KBS Tour Lite Shaft’s ability to produce a higher launch also contributes to improved trajectory control. Golfers can expect a more penetrating ball flight that cuts through the wind, providing better distance and accuracy even in challenging weather conditions. This combination of a higher launch and optimal trajectory can make a significant difference in a golfer’s ability to attack pins and score well on the course.

Choosing the Right Flex for Your Swing

When it comes to selecting the right flex for your golf club shaft, it’s important to understand the flex rating system and consider various factors that can impact your swing. The flex of a golf shaft refers to its ability to bend and store energy during your swing, ultimately influencing the trajectory, accuracy, and distance of your shots.

Understanding the Flex Rating System

The flex rating system classifies shafts into different categories based on their stiffness. The most common flex ratings include L (Ladies), A (Senior), R (Regular), S (Stiff), and X (Extra Stiff). Each flex rating represents a specific range of stiffness, and it’s crucial to find the one that matches your swing characteristics.

To determine the right flex for your swing, it’s essential to consider your swing speed and swing tempo. Swing speed refers to how fast you swing the club, while swing tempo refers to the rhythm and timing of your swing. These two factors play a vital role in determining the ideal flex for your shaft.

If you have a slow swing speed and a smooth tempo, a softer flex such as L or A may be suitable for you. These flexes provide more flexion and allow for greater clubhead lag, generating more power and distance. On the other hand, if you have a fast swing speed and an aggressive tempo, a stiffer flex like S or X will provide the necessary stability and control for your swing.

Another factor to consider is your ball flight preference. Do you tend to hit the ball low, high, or somewhere in between? This can influence your choice of flex as well. For example, if you have a low ball flight, a stiffer flex may help you achieve a higher trajectory, while a softer flex can help you lower the ball flight if you tend to hit it too high.

Factors to Consider when Selecting Flex

In addition to swing speed, swing tempo, and ball flight preference, there are a few other factors to consider when selecting the flex for your golf club shaft. These include your physical strength, skill level, and personal preference.

Physical strength plays a significant role in determining the appropriate flex for your swing. If you have above-average strength, you may be able to handle a stiffer flex with ease. On the other hand, if you have limited strength or are a beginner, a softer flex may be more forgiving and easier to control.

Skill level is another crucial factor to consider. As a beginner, you may benefit from a more flexible shaft that helps you generate more power and distance. As you progress and improve your swing mechanics, you may find that a stiffer flex provides better control and consistency.

Lastly, personal preference should not be overlooked. Some golfers simply prefer the feel and feedback of a specific flex, regardless of their swing characteristics. It’s important to try out different flexes and see which one suits your game and provides the desired performance.

Installation and Maintenance of KBS Tour Lite Shaft

When it comes to the installation and maintenance of your KBS Tour Lite Shaft, it’s important to follow proper techniques to ensure optimal performance and longevity. Additionally, implementing the right cleaning and care instructions will help you maintain the quality of your shaft over time.

Proper Installation Techniques

Properly installing your KBS Tour Lite Shaft is crucial for achieving the best results on the golf course. Here are some techniques to keep in mind:

  • Preparation : Before installing the shaft, make sure you have all the necessary tools and equipment. This includes a shaft puller, epoxy, grip solvent, grip tape, and a vise. Having these items ready will streamline the installation process.
  • Shaft Alignment : It’s important to align the shaft correctly before installation. This involves ensuring that the spine of the shaft is positioned correctly, as it can affect the performance and consistency of your shots. Use a spine alignment tool or consult with a professional club fitter to determine the optimal position.
  • Applying Epoxy : Epoxy is used to bond the shaft to the clubhead securely. Apply a generous amount of epoxy to the tip of the shaft and inside the hosel of the clubhead. Ensure that the epoxy is evenly distributed to create a strong bond.
  • Insertion and Alignment : Carefully insert the shaft into the hosel, ensuring that it is aligned properly with the clubhead. Gently twist the shaft to ensure a snug fit. Use a shaft alignment tool to verify that the shaft is correctly aligned with the clubface.
  • Curing and Finishing : Once the shaft is properly inserted, wipe off any excess epoxy and use a curing agent or heat gun to speed up the curing process. Allow the epoxy to fully cure before proceeding. Finally, install the grip according to your preference using grip tape and grip solvent.

Following these proper installation techniques will help you achieve optimal performance and stability with your KBS Tour Lite Shaft.

Cleaning and Care Instructions

Maintaining the cleanliness and quality of your KBS Tour Lite Shaft is essential for its longevity and performance. Here are some cleaning and care instructions to keep in mind:

  • Regular Inspection : Before and after each round of golf, inspect your shaft for any signs of damage, such as cracks or dents. Pay close attention to the grip area, as it can wear out over time. If you notice any issues, it’s best to address them promptly to prevent further damage.
  • Cleaning : To clean your shaft, use a soft cloth or towel dampened with mild soap and water. Gently wipe the shaft, paying extra attention to the grip area. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that may damage the shaft’s finish.
  • Drying : After cleaning, make sure to dry the shaft thoroughly using a dry cloth or towel. Moisture can seep into the shaft, potentially causing damage or corrosion. Allow the shaft to air dry completely before storing or using it.
  • Storage : When not in use, store your KBS Tour Lite Shaft in a cool, dry place. Avoid storing it in extreme temperatures or humid environments, as this can affect the integrity of the shaft. Additionally, consider using a shaft cover or protective sleeve to prevent any accidental damage.
  • Avoiding Impact : While the KBS Tour Lite Shaft is designed to withstand the rigors of the game, it’s important to avoid unnecessary impact or abuse. Be mindful of banging or dropping your clubs, as this can cause damage to the shaft or clubhead.

By following these cleaning and care instructions, you can ensure that your KBS Tour Lite Shaft remains in excellent condition, delivering consistent performance round after round.

Comparing KBS Tour Lite Shaft to Other Shaft Options

When it comes to choosing the right golf shaft for your game, it’s important to consider the differences in weight and flexibility, as well as the performance characteristics of different options. In this section, we will compare the KBS Tour Lite Shaft to other shaft options in these aspects.

Differences in Weight and Flexibility

One of the key factors to consider when comparing golf shafts is their weight. The KBS Tour Lite Shaft is specifically designed to be lighter than standard shafts, making it a popular choice for players who prefer a lighter feel. The lighter weight allows for increased clubhead speed, which can lead to greater distance off the tee.

In contrast, other shaft options may be heavier, which can provide added stability and control. These shafts are often favored by players who prioritize accuracy and consistency in their shots. The weight of a golf shaft ultimately comes down to personal preference and individual swing characteristics. It’s important to find the right balance that suits your game.

Flexibility is another important aspect to consider. The KBS Tour Lite Shaft offers a mid-to-low flex point, providing a balance between control and power. This flex profile allows for a smooth and responsive feel throughout the swing, promoting optimal energy transfer and generating distance.

On the other hand, other shaft options may have different flex profiles, ranging from softer to stiffer. A softer shaft can help players with slower swing speeds generate more clubhead speed, while a stiffer shaft can offer better control for those with faster swing speeds. Again, finding the right flex for your swing is crucial in maximizing your performance on the course.

Comparing Performance Characteristics

Apart from weight and flexibility, the performance characteristics of a golf shaft can greatly impact your game. The KBS Tour Lite Shaft is known for its ability to increase both distance and accuracy. The lighter weight allows for faster clubhead speed, resulting in longer drives. At the same time, the mid-to-low flex point provides stability and control, helping you hit your target consistently.

Other shaft options may offer different performance characteristics. For example, some shafts may prioritize control and feel over distance. These shafts are often favored by players who value precision and shot shaping ability. On the other hand, there are shafts designed to maximize distance, ideal for players looking to gain extra yardage off the tee.

It’s important to note that the performance characteristics of a golf shaft can vary depending on factors such as swing speed, swing tempo, and overall skill level. What works for one player may not work for another. Therefore, it’s crucial to try out different shaft options and see which one suits your game the best.
