SeductiveBillGates wrote: I know I am raising this thread from the dead, but I do have a genuine question. I found this site, another link, and this one through Google from searching for "Flying Toasters" when i saw it in a LGR video on YouTube. Anyway, how can I get the installer to work on Windows 10? I've already tried compatibility mode with Windows 98 and Windows XP (SP3). Any suggetions?

The modded After Dark 3 works on both Windows 2000 and XP, although I have never been able to get the modded After Dark 4 to work on win2k (with both regular and extended kernel), though it does work on XP and Server 2003.

I think it may have something to do with AD 4 placing files in %systemroot%\WINDOWS, when Windows 2000 places system files in a WINNT folder. I do remember it failing with XP once, on an upgraded install from win2k (which keeps the WINNT folder).

How to play After Dark 2.0 Screensaver

Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse.

After Dark 2.0 Screensaver Description

After Dark is the name given to a series of successful screensaver software products first released in 1989 by Berkeley Systems for the Macintosh (and later ported to Windows).

After the success of the original, more editions followed including More After Dark, Before Dark and editions themed around licensed properties such as Star Trek and The Simpsons.

As well as the included animated screen savers, it allowed third-party modules to be included since, at the time of the original release, screensaver launching functionality was not included as a part of the Macintosh or Windows operating systems.

A curious feature in this program's history is that a book was published about After Dark called Art of Darkness by Erfert Fenton (Peachpit Press, 1992).

In recent years, several After Dark modules were featured in the background of interviews for the VH1 show I Love the 90s.

Is After Dark compatible for Windows 10?

I have been looking all over to figure out whether or not After Dark is compatible for Windows 10, but I can't find any information. If possible, I would like it to have all the modules like they were in the original or similar to them.

UPDATE: I got a some info here and mounted the iso, but the installer in the ADE folder has this error: "Couldn't read information about setup file number: 7 in setup package overall from setup the file data." How can I fix this?

  • You can't get a copy of After Dark specifically for Windows 10, that's for sure. But maybe you can get the old versions to work, so I've edited the question accordingly. –  oldmud0 Commented Jan 17, 2016 at 17:57

Apparently here according to this person on Reddit who seems to believe it's working on their Windows 10 environment. According to this post a lot of old screensavers do still work in Windows 8.1/10, so I guess it's worth a shot.

I downloaded it, extracted it with 7-zip , mounted the ISO within, ran the setup file in ADE with Windows 95 Compatability (Threw one error message but skipped it without a problem), it seems to work fine (the dropdown box shows the wrong name, but otherwise it runs). See screenshots below.

Settings page doesn’t seem to work, so I'm not sure if there’s any way to modify whatever settings it has.

Past that, you can change what screensaver it uses by going into C:\After Dark\After Dark 4.0 . By default it’s using Flying Toasters!.ad . Rename that to file to something else ( Flying Toasters!.ad.old perhaps) and rename any other file in here to Flying Toasters!.ad .

It’s a hack, but it’s also just a screensaver. I don’t really want it anymore so I’ll leave it to you to tinker with that if you so wish.

  • 2 This works! Thank you! NOW, to avoid copying and renaming the files, there's a Windows Registry Key that can be modified with the name of the screensaver: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Berkeley Systems\After Dark\Folders The key named After Dark 4.0 can be modified to the name of the file without the extension, like Bad Dog! (I found it here: techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/… ) –  Metafaniel Commented May 8, 2018 at 16:27
  • I haven't found a way for these screensavers to work. I mean yes they load when the Preview button is clicked, but in my case won't launch when the screensaver is mean to be lauched (idle time). Also I havent found a way to launch the screensavers foundt at C:\After Dark\Deluxe Classics –  Metafaniel Commented May 8, 2018 at 16:54
  • I've used this code in a .bat file and it's working: @start /wait %windir%\SysWOW64\"After Dark.scr" /s & rundll32 user32.dll,LockWorkStation This will start the screensaver, then when it closes the PC will lock. It's not perfect but it's working. It's somnething! Albe's answer in stackoverflow.com/questions/1430108/… helped me out. I tried other solutions but didn't work in my case. But you should take a look! –  Metafaniel Commented May 28, 2018 at 19:51
  • 1 I've created a program for you to be able to change the After Dark modules settings, you can find it here: github.com/rafaga12/after-dark-settings –  Rafael Commented Jun 24, 2022 at 22:40

I was able to make sense of the preferences by installing AD on Windows XP and looking in REGEDIT.

Mute All Sounds: Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Berkley Systems\After Dark add a REG_DWORD MuteSound with data 1

Change Module: Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Berkley Systems\After Dark\Folders change the data of After Dark 4.0 to the name of the module you want, no .ad extension.

If you're just into Flying Toasters: Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Berkley Systems\After Dark\Module Setings\After Dark 4.0\Flying Toasters! add four REG_DWORD entries:

  • Control0 for Objects on Screen, data 0 (little), 1, 2 or 3 (lots).
  • Control1 for Types of Toastes, data 0 (Adutls), 1 (Babies) or 2 (Random).
  • Control2 for Music, data 0 (never), 1(1 min), 2 (2 min), 3 (5 min), 4 (30 min) or 5(always).
  • Control3 for Display Karaoke, 0 (no) or 1 (yes).

I was able to install After Dark in Windows 10 as shown in the other answers, running /ADE/Setup.exe using Windows 95 compatibility.

The problem I am having is that the default screen saver seems to be Starry Night or some other star field screen saver. Starry Night.ad is found in the C:/After Dark/After Dark folder. I tried copying Flying Toasters!.ad to this location and renaming it Starry Night.ad however this didn't work. I also placed the renamed file in C:/After Dark/After Dark 4.0 folder.

Running the Screen saver still shows Starry Night, and a message along the top of screen that says:

“Unable to load selected module:C:/After Dark/After Dark 4.0/Flying Toasters!.ad”

I'll keep tinkering with it when I have time and a few min later - I fixed it!

There is a needed file that fails to install. Locate adxpl510.dll in the installation folder /ADE/FILES/AD40 . copy this file to she same folder as After Dark.scr (Mine was in c:/Windows/SysWOW64 ).

Now the screensaver can locate the module: C:/After Dark/After Dark 4.0/Flying Toasters!.ad

You can now run After Dark as a Windows 10/11 screen saver. It actually boots Windows 98 in DOSBox-X but I have set it up to auto-run After Dark and then exit when you move the mouse or press a key. It can be dowloaded from the Internet Archive right here .

This is an alpha release, and the installation process is a bit messy. I have included instructions in the archive for setup and configuration. Enjoy!!

After Dark 4.0 Screensavers work just fine on Windows 10 (Windows 11 too actually). However, the older screensavers "After Dark Classic" or "3.0" do not.

The reason for the difference is that After Dark 4.0 screensavers are 32 bit and the earlier ones are 16 bit. Microsoft has disabled 16 bit support by default pretty much since Windows 7.

Running After Dark 4.0 on Windows 10 (or 11) Without Installing

Copy the "Engine" folder from the installer to your computer

Place the "AD40" (aka After Dark 4.0) folder inside the "Engine" folder on your computer

Add the path to the "Engine" folder to the registry

Add the path to the After Dark 4.0 Screensavers to the registry. (Note: This path is assumed to have the path from Step 3 above added to the front of it.)

Tell After Dark which screensaver to use. This can be any ".ad" file in the After Dark 4.0 folder

Run the screensaver by double clicking the AFTERDAR.SCR file. (Or install the screensaver by Right clicking on it and selecting install.)

(Related Note: .scr files are actually .exe files. So, if for some odd reason you need an .exe to run After Dark just rename afterdar.scr to afterdar.exe and run it with the option /s . That will behave exactly the same as double clicking the .scr file.)

As @roger-c-rocha's excellent answer points out there are also additional control options for each screensaver.

Running all of After Dark on a VM

While Windows 10 (or 11) cannot natively run older After Dark screensavers ( without basically unsupported hacks ), they can run them just fine in a VM. After Dark 4.0 came out in 1996. So, Windows 95 is able to run all of After Dark including the classic ones, and it turns out that these days Windows 95 will even run in your browser . (That's right After Dark on your Cell Phone Web Browser is completely possible.)

Until someone gets around to putting the Windows 95 VM with After Dark online (Hopefully somewhere like archive.org ) My recommendation is to use this cross platform Windows 95 VM , and follow their instructions to install additional software (aka your copy of After Dark). Or if you need better speed this less user friendly Windows 95 install on DosBox works great.

Lunatic Fringe

At least for me Lunatic Fringe was the only screensaver I could not get to properly function even in the Windows 95 VM. However, it turns out that there is a project to turn Lunatic Fringe into a browser game. Enjoy playing it .

While using Windows 10 Home Edition and After Dark 10th Anniversary,

I can confirm Jonno’s answer also works for After Dark tenth anniversary (which can also be found at WinWorld ) I used the same solution but for the following key Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Berkeley Systems\After Dark\Folders\After Dark Tenth Anniversary

  • It suffers from the same problems described in other answers. I could also not hear any sound in both versions of after dark.
  • UPDATE : Roger C. Rocha’s solution for muting the sound worked. his solution for replacing the module only worked for some of the modules, e.g. worked for Flying Toasters! but didn't work for Flying Toasters Pro and sadly enough, neither for Flying Toilets…
  • Cyber WAT, Shadow Agents, Flying Toasters!, Toaster 2k work, Time Flies, Fish World, and the Roger Dodger game worked for me. the rest did not.

Note that there is also a remix/remake of the Flying Toasters modules here

After Dark Screensavers

After Dark is the name of a screensaver product first released for Apple Mac in 1989, and for Windows in 1991, by Berkeley Systems. It allowed users to install and configure screensaver modules, and even create their own to plug in to the software. Each module consisted of a different type of screensaver, the most popular ones being Flying Toasters, Bad Dog and Starry Night. These screensavers are replicas of the original After Dark screensavers.

Star Trek: The Screensaver screenshot #1

Yet another module for the world's most popular screensaver After Dark. The program features the original cast, great sound effects, and diverse modules to make staring at the monitor more entertaining. Not as informative as LucasArts' Star Wars Entertainment, but still a great value for all Trekkie fans.

People who downloaded Star Trek: The Screensaver have also downloaded: After Dark 3 , Star Trek: Captain's Chair , Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , Star Trek: Armada , Star Wars Trilogy CD-ROM Limited Edition , Star Trek: New Worlds , Star Trek: Hidden Evil , Star Trek: Armada 2

Star Trek: The Screen Saver

This set of After Dark modules from Berkeley Systems should be an instant hit with Star Trek fans, what with modules like one that displays detailed technical information from "Scotty’s Files," a Starfleet Final Exam that you can actually take, a Planetary Atlas manual, displays of various ships panels, a display of the tunnelling Horta, a screenful of tribbles, and Spock walking around messing with things. In this respect, there’s little wrong with the $40 package.

To play the devil’s advocate, I can’t recommend Star Trek: The Screen Saver to anyone who isn’t a serious Star Trek fan. Sure, the graphics are the correct licensed versions, as are the sounds, but too much of the package feels like a grade B remake of "Captain Kirk Meets The Flying Toasters." In some ways, the fact the hokey graphics aren’t a problem; much of the original show’s sets were equally as crude. However, I think the displays suffer from translation into another medium – like cartoons of TV shows or stuffed animals based on comic-strip characters, they always feel slightly wrong.

Overall, then, Star Trek: The Screen Saver is a must for the serious Star Trek fan, but not necessarily appropriate for your average After Dark module collector. Note that unlike the More After Dark module package, After Dark itself (and the MultiModule and Randomizer modules) comes with Star Trek: The Screen Saver. This is convenient and also convinces me that Berkeley correctly identified their audience.
