Alcatraz Island Questions & Answers

alcatraz tours age limit

Can I bring my 3 year old daughter? On the FAQ of the alcatrazcruises website, it says that you cannot bring children under 12 yrs old. However, in the ticket prices, it was implied that you can bring toddlers as it was mentioned that toddlers (age 0-4) are free.

alcatraz tours age limit

Children under 12 years old are not allowed on the Behind the Scenes Tour ONLY.

You can bring kids on any of the Day Tours and Night Tours, and you do not have to get a ticket for children under 5 years old.

alcatraz tours age limit

Hi, when I went there were not any children however on the boat there is an enclosed area where I suspect they would probably want you to sit with children and not the open top deck. I noticed on their website they do offer child tickets so assume they do allow children. Drop them an email to make sure as they may have buggy restrictions or some other rules. Hope this helps.

I actually literally just got off the phone with someone about this. They are permitted to tour. You just don't have to pay for a ticket :)

I saw toddlers there, but it was not the best environment for them- unstable in places, some disrepair. You will not be able to put them down much if any. If you want to see and enjoy the place, have someone stay behind with them.

How to Visit Alcatraz with Kids

How to Visit Alcatraz with Kids

  • May 28, 2021 July 27, 2021
  • by Mrs. Family Trip

Nature reclaims her own, time and again. She heals, restores and, eventually, makes whole that which is broken. It is why we go into the woods when we feel overwhelmed beyond help. It is why Walden appeals. It is why one of the top ways to stay mentally healthy is to get outside .

Alcatraz is a reminder of the beauty and the crushing ability to cleanse that nature holds.

For a place that housed some of the worst of human stories and conditions, some of the saddest of broken minds and spirits, it is stunningly gorgeous. Huge succulents cascade down brick walls meant to punish; birds roost and raise their young in buildings destroyed by fire.

The ravished landscape is made ravishing when humans let nature be.

When we decided to head to California as our big family vacation this spring, our youngest child was beyond excited about one spot: Alcatraz. I don’t think that he’s alone, nor do I think there is anything morbid about that. There is something in the iconic, identifiable, historic, creepy place, paired with the stories of men who beat The Rock through escape, that appeals to a lot of kids people.

Yet we were traveling while COVID cases were going down and the world of travel and tourism was very much uncertain and different. It wasn’t until about two weeks prior to our trip that Alcatraz reopened for visitors. We felt lucky, and elated.

It turns out, our feelings were appropriate. This was a really amazing and memorable trip, one definitely worth making.

Visiting Alcatraz with Kids

Prepare for your visit to Alcatraz

Every major family adventure we do, we make our kids pick things we are going to see and write reports on them. Don’t worry, we don’t give them grades. But we’ve discovered it’s a really wonderful way to a) get them excited about the trip, b) have them engage with the places we are going in a pronounced way, and c) learn a lot about the places we are going to see.

So, of course, our third grader chose to do his report on Alcatraz.

He read this book (affiliate link) , which we actually then ALL read.

My husband watched this movie when he got home, but wished he had watched it beforehand. Of course, this is NOT appropriate for our kids. But incidentally, we learned that it is the most accurate Hollywood depiction of Alcatraz there is.

Visiting Alcatraz with Kids

We got our tickets to Alcatraz as soon as we could. A silver lining of COVID: tickets are usually really hard to get. They sell out months in advance. But due to the fact that things were just reopening, we were able to snag some.

NOTE: Be sure you get tickets on the proper cruise!! Only one is the licensed carrier to dock at Alcatraz and let tourists off. Other “Alcatraz cruises” literally just cruise around the island. If you’re planning on getting off and walking around Alcatraz, get tickets on the right boat (alcatrazcruises.com).

Tickets to ride the boat aren’t cheap (around $40 per adult), but that is the total cost. There isn’t any entry fee or additional cost to do the audio tour of the cellhouse.

Visiting Alcatraz with Kids

By way of practical tips:

  • Pack sunscreen! Even though it was chilly during our trip, it was sunny.
  • Pack water. Bring some snacks  – not much is for sale on the island. While you can’t eat anywhere but at the dock, it is worth having something light to eat, just in case.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. While Alcatraz isn’t huge, it is very steep. In fact, if you are taking young ones, strollers would work but just be prepared to do the hard work of pushing uphill.
  • Dress in layers (a general rule for California). If we were in the wind, we were chilly. If we weren’t, we were hot.

Visiting Alcatraz with Kids

I will also throw this random, unique tidbit out there –

Read up on ALL the history of Alcatraz. I had never heard of the Indian occupation of Alcatraz , but the marks of that phenomenal piece of history are still visible. I wish I had known more!

Visiting Alcatraz with Kids

How to get the most out of your time on Alcatraz

We were on the first boat out in the morning, and arrived at the loading dock a little early. I recommend that, as there are some exhibits for the kids to look at while waiting for departure.

Once we got off the boat, we used our young(ish) legs and hauled up the hill quickly – straight to the cellhouse at the top. We knew there was going to be a crowd (afterall, we just cruised over with them). We ended up being some of the first to get to the cellhouse and didn’t have to wait in line.

Definitely plan to do the audio tour! It is free and added so much to our experience. There were stories told by people who were actually prisoners on Alcatraz. A little creepy, but also really interesting. It reminded us that what happened in these walls happened to real people.

Visiting Alcatraz with Kids

The boat schedule was every hour. It left the pier in San Francisco on the hour, and then left the island back for San Francisco at 20 after the hour. One hour wasn’t enough time to be on Alcatraz. But two hours felt long. I would recommend bringing snacks (see above) and planning to be on Alcatraz for the two hours.

They do have Junior Ranger programs at Alcatraz. (As I’ve explained before, we don’t do those as our oldest in particular then gets so obsessed with the pamphlet and word games that he never looks up from the paper at the actual place we are.)

Visiting Alcatraz with Kids

The audio tour pointed out some really amazing details, including the original cells where the men successfully escaped, as well as stories about failed attempts at escape.

But we spent a lot of time talking with our kids, too, trying to process everything. I was overwhelmed by the suffering contained on the island – sometimes the feelings were so acute the hair on my arms stood on end – and I have no doubt that tortured spirits are stuck somewhere inside.

We wanted our kids to not just take home the myth and legend, but we wanted to invoke empathy and the truth of the place as well – as much as we could that was age appropriate and didn’t detract from the experience.

One of the most resonant stories told on the audio tour was of prisoners looking out the barred windows, stuck in this hell, hearing the sounds of the wealthy partying and laughing across the bay. The prisoners would see, hear and smell what they couldn’t have: freedom.

Visiting Alcatraz with Kids

We spent a lot of time then wandering the gardens. There are stunning views of San Francisco, the Golden Gate, and the green, verdant peaks rising up on the opposite shoreline across the bridge.

Thoughts on visiting Alcatraz

As shared in the introduction to this post, I was incredibly taken aback by how beautiful this place is. When we were reading plaques explaining how grand banquets were held for those who worked on the island and at the prison, I was not surprised. I could envision it. The vegetative lushness around us screamed excess and luxury.

When we were told stories of the kids being raised on Alcatraz, it was easy to forget they were raised in the shadow of an infamous federal prison and, instead, think of how glorious it must have been running wild in such a beautiful and mystery place, nestled in blue waters and scenic views.

Visiting Alcatraz with Kids

But one of the things that Mr. Family Trip and I noticed and discussed was how, even though this is a National Park, it is being maintained but not restored. It is being left as it was left.

I love this.

Visiting Alcatraz with Kids

Alcatraz is not being overhauled to be a Disney experience. This is real life. All of the remnants of decisions humans have made over the past centuries are on display – the good and the bad.

This is a really powerful way to preserve a national landmark. And it’s also brave. Alcatraz hasn’t removed the spray-painted resistance message on the water tower. They haven’t tried to cover up the rebar of buildings that burnt down. Crumbling steps are roped off but given permission to continue to crumble. It is easy to recognize that these are the actual steps humans decades before me walked their lives on.

Everything feels so real. And because of that, it affects deep down and on a visceral level.

Visiting Alcatraz with Kids

It is definitely worth the half day and the expense to visit this most unique of National Parks, to engage in big questions about institutional memory and what we hold on to, to feel the power of nature to reclaim. It is definitely worth a trip to Alcatraz.

The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Alcatraz Island with Kids

alcatraz tours age limit

January 15, 2018

Alcatraz Island Fort Mason, B201 San Francisco, CA Ask any tourist in San Francisco the places they plan on visiting in the city, and Alcatraz Island is sure to be at the top of their list along with the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman's Wharf . But ask a Bay Area local if they've been to Alcatraz and the answer is more often than not, "No. Alcatraz is for tourists." Sound familiar? I recently visited Alcatraz Island with my three daughters and, trust me, it's a great place to the kids—no matter how long you've lived here ! Here's everything you need to know about visiting the former penitentiary .

The ferry trip

Alcatraz Island

A major highlight of any visit to Alcatraz happens before you even set foot on the island. It's the ferry trip ! The ten minute ferry trip to Alcatraz from Pier 33 may be short, but during that time you'll take in some of the most spectacular views of the Bay you can imagine. As the ferry zooms out you'll see the Golden Gate Bridge, the Bay Bridges, Treasure Island, Angel Island, Coit Tower, the TransAmerica Building, Sausalito, the East Bay and, of course, Alcatraz Island. While standing outside will get you the best views, it can also be pretty windy—a window seat inside is best with small children. Depending on the ferry in use, there's also covered seating on the roof available. These seats not only afford great views, but kids can watch the wind turbines on the back of the ferry spin as they generate power.

Insider tip: Make sure to arrive at Pier 33 at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time to get at the front of the queue for the best seats. The ferry will turn around once it moves away from the pier, so grab a seat on the right hand side when you board and you'll end up facing Alcatraz for the duration of the trip.

Junior Ranger program

Alcatraz Island

Since  Alcatraz Island is a National Park, children visiting the island can take part in the Junior Ranger program . This is a great way to get the children involved in learning about the history and environment of the island, and it serves as a great distraction should they get a little bored at times. The program is primarily aimed at kids ages five to 13, but children of any age are welcome to participate. To take part in the program, visit the Ranger Station near the dock when you first arrive on the island. Children will be given an activity book filled with word searches, quizzes and drawing pages to complete as they tour Alcatraz. (The number of pages they need to complete varies depending on age.) Upon completion of the book (or the required number of pages), a ranger will check that the answers have been filled out, have the kids recite a pledge and then award them with their very own junior ranger badges. It's such a fun program and the badges make a great (and free!) souvenir.

Insider tip: Make sure to allow a little extra time before the ferry departure to visit the ranger station for the kids to be sworn in as Junior Rangers. It typically takes five to 10 minutes depending on how many kids there are.

Alcatraz Island

The cell house is the main attraction at Alcatraz. Here you not only see the cells that inmates lived in, but also explore the interiors of a few. While most cells contain just the bare minimum (bed, toilet and sink), some have have been set up with the artifacts and belongings of the former inmates, such as painting supplies, art works, clothing and bedding. A major highlight is seeing the cell where inmates dug a hole through the wall with spoons! Most cells are closed to the public and can only be viewed from the corridor, however several cells are open for visitors to explore and take that all important "stuck behind bars" photo. My kids love trying to chat to each other through the thick windows, even though it's impossible to hear the person on the other side!

Insider tip : To learn more about the cell house take the free audio tour.

Alcatraz Island

The free audio tour through the Cell House block is a great way to learn about the history of Alcatraz and its inmates as you explore the building. The audio tour guides visitors through the cell house block and Recreation Yard with stops at various points of interest. The littlest visitors to Alcatraz are sure to want to join in with the audio tour even if they don't really understand what they're hearing—wearing headphones is fun when you're a toddler! The audio tour starts and ends at the northern entrance to the Cell Block.

Insider tip: The Recreation Yard is a great spot for little visitors to take a break during the audio tour. Here, they can run around, play hopscotch and climb the concrete bleachers, which also make for a good place to sit for a bit. A gate at the side of the Recreation Yard provides spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge and is worth a look.

Parade Ground

Alcatraz Island

The Parade Ground is a great place for kids to run around while parents take in the stunning views over the city. (There are plenty of old foundations perfect for balancing on which was a hit with my kids!) We spotted tons of birds in this area and my kids also enjoyed looking down at the water below trying to spot sea lions. The Agave Trail makes its way around the outskirts of the Parade Ground offering stunning views from the East Bay to the Golden Gate Bridge. (Keep in mind that seasonal closures of the path are currently in place.)

Insider tip: The Parade Ground seems like a great spot to sit and eat a picnic (as I saw several people doing), but eating is only allowed in the designated area by the dock.

New Industries Building (and exhibitions)

Alcatraz Island

The New Industries Building at the northern end of Alcatraz Island is a large open building that houses exhibitions. These exhibitions change over time, and in the past have included notable artworks such as Chinese artist Ai Weiwei's exhibition showcasing his perspective on human rights, political prisoners and freedom of expression. The current exhibition features photographs taken at the end of Alcatraz Island's time as a federal prison. The building features large windows that face onto the Bay with stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Insider tip: While the exhibition may not be of much interest to younger children, there are plenty of other features that are sure to capture their imagination. A wall of old toilets in various states of disrepair caught my kids' attention! This quiet building is also a great spot for kids to sit and work on their Junior Ranger books while parents take in the exhibition.

Alcatraz Island

The Museums Collection, housed in the Barracks, features a large array of artifacts and photographs from Alcatraz Island's time as a federal prison, a military prison and the Native American occupation. My kids especially enjoyed seeing the weapons used by the prison guards, fake heads created out of cardboard and human hair by inmates in an escape attempt, and the various keys made by prisoners out of everyday items like spoons. My kids were surprised to learn here that there were also children who called Alcatraz home. These were the children of prison staff members who lived in cottages on the island with their families. Can you imagine living on Alcatraz Island?

Insider tip: There are a few hands-on exhibits in the museum which are perfect for keeping younger children occupied while you check out the exhibits.

Tips for your visit:

Alcatraz Island

• Access to Alcatraz is available only through Alcatraz Cruises. Purchase tickets here . Be wary of other companies selling tickets for boat trips that include Alcatraz, as these do not stop at the island.

• It's best to book your tickets as far in advance as possible as they can sell out quickly, especially on weekends and during holidays. Tickets are available for purchase 90 days in advance.

• Tickets are $37.25 for adults, $23 for children (ages 5-11) and free for children under 4.

• Make sure to arrive at Pier 33 and check-in at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled departure time. If you miss your departure time, there is no guarantee that you will be able to board a later ferry.

• Ferries returning to Pier 33 depart Alcatraz approximately every 30 minutes until 4:30pm. Three hours is the suggested visit time on the island.

• Food is not available to purchase on Alcatraz Island. Bringing a packed lunch or snacks is recommended, however eating is only allowed at the dock area. Bottled water is allowed on all areas of the island and can be purchased in the gift store. Food and drinks are available to purchase on the ferry and at Pier 33.

• Most parts of Alcatraz island are wheelchair and stroller accessible, however the hills are very steep. A small tram is available to transport those with limited mobility. I would recommend using a baby carrier for infants rather than a stroller as it can get quite crowded in the Cell Block building!

• Make sure to wear comfortable shoes as you'll be doing a lot of walking.

• The weather can change quickly on Alcatraz so be prepared and dress in layers. Rain ponchos are available to purchase in the gift store.

Alcatraz Island and the Alcatraz Tour

Alcatraz Tour Fascinates Visitors to Alcatraz Island

alcatraz tours age limit

Matteo Colombo / Getty Images

It's a former federal prison on a rocky island in the middle of the bay, steeped in legend and a popular tourist stop.

Spanish Explorer Manuel de Ayala named this barren rock in the middle of San Francisco Bay Isla de los Alcatraces (Island of the Pelicans). The island called Alcatraz has been used as a Civil War fort, a Federal prison and a symbol of Native American plight. Today, the National Park Service runs Alcatraz Island as a tourist attraction.

Things to Do on Alcatraz

You can get a look at what you'll see on the Alcatraz tour by visiting the Alcatraz slideshow.

The National Park Service schedules activities to help you learn about Alcatraz Island, including lectures and special tours. The schedule board at the ferry landing gives the times. The only guided tour is the audio tour, but you can also pick up a self-guided tour book near the boat dock.

Barracks from Alcatraz Island's stint as a military base, the cell house, lighthouse, and a few others remain. Many of the Alcatraz Island prison buildings are gone. Some burned during the American Indian Alcatraz occupation in the 1960s. The guard's residences, deteriorated beyond repair, were torn down in the 1970s.

If the hospital area is open during your visit, don't miss it. It's a fascinating look at medical care during the prison's heyday.

To see two San Francisco Bay islands in one day, take the Alcatraz & Angel Island Tour which will also take you to Angel Island .

Alcatraz Island Tickets

The only way to tour Alcatraz is with the company called Alcatraz Cruises, leaving from San Francisco. Other bay cruise companies can take you by, but can't stop.  Find all the details and buy tickets at the Alcatraz Cruises website . Anyone else selling an Alcatraz Island tour is re-selling tickets and may charge a processing fee.

Alcatraz tour tickets sell out fast. The official brochures say tickets sell out as early as a week in advance in the summer and on holiday weekends. When checked on a July Friday, they were sold out until the following Tuesday.

Tickets not used by hotels are released to the Alcatraz ticket booth just before it opens. Be first in line you may get a same-day tour ticket. Your hotel's concierge or front desk may have tickets. Or consider taking the Alcatraz and Angel Island tour, which doesn't fill up as fast.

The boat ride to Alcatraz takes about 15 minutes each way from San Francisco. Your tour can last as long as you like (or until the last boat leaves).

The Day Tour is the most popular. It includes round-trip transportation to the island and the audio tour.

The Night Tour includes extra activities — and is slightly more expensive. Taking it allows more time to visit other sights that close earlier, maximizing your sightseeing time. The only downside is that a few areas that are open during the day close after dark.

Get Ready to Visit Alcatraz

Most visitors spend at least a few hours on Alcatraz. Snacks and water are essential to keep everyone from getting "hangry" or thirsty.

If you don't know much about Alcatraz, stop to see the 17-minute introductory video before you go up the hill. You can also read up on these interesting facts about Alcatraz before you go and  explore the fascinating history of the Alcatraz lighthouse .

Watch the Clint Eastwood movie "Escape from Alcatraz" for a glimpse of how the prison operated during its busiest period.

Tips for Visiting Alcatraz

Pick up an audio tour and use it. You'll get a lot more out of what you're seeing. Pay attention to the audio directions. Otherwise, you could end up gabbing away with your friends and not able to figure out where you should be going. If that happens, ask a ranger or tour guide for help.

If you miss your boat, don't despair. The ticket office can direct you to the standby line for the next one.

To see Alcatraz, you'll walk — a lot. It's easy enough if you're in reasonably good shape. They offer a tram to get you up the hill, but you still have to walk after you get there.

The boats are quiet, clean and smooth riding. The trip is short. But if you need a Dramamine just to sit on the dock and watch a boat bobbing up and down, take your favorite remedy.

Those white spots all over the island aren't paint. Rangers say several people a day acquire a "white badge of honor" as a gift from a seagull. DON'T look up if you hear birds. Also, watch where you put your hands to avoid touching those same white splotches of yucky stuff.

The gift shop has some very stylish and clever souvenir items. They also sell the book "Hollywood Alcatraz" which details all the films made at Alcatraz and where their scenes were filmed.

Alcatraz Tour Review

In a poll, more than 2,000 Tripsavvy readers rated Alcatraz, 48% rated it awesome and 10% great. However, 26% gave it the lowest rating.

Alcatraz is likely to bore children under the age of five and is more fun for kids who are old enough to understand what it is.

On the plus side, the views of San Francisco and the bay are eye-popping. History buffs enjoy Alcatraz. So does anyone who's seen the movies about it and feel like it's a must-see. The audio tour is one of the best anywhere, using voices of actual guards and prisoners to tell the prison's story.

On the downside, it takes almost half a day to go there and back. If your trip to San Francisco is short, that may be more time than you want to spend on one activity. And it smells like bird poop during spring seagull nesting season.

Getting to Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island San Francisco, CA National Park Website

Alcatraz Cruises leave from Pier 33. If you've been to San Francisco before, be aware that the ticket booth and departure dock moved several years ago.

To drive, follow signs for Pier 39. Pier 33 is a few blocks east. You can find more than a dozen commercial parking lots within a five-block radius. Street parking isn't practical because the meters have a two-hour limit and you'll be gone longer than that.

If you're staying in San Francisco, take a taxi, use a ride-sharing service or public transit. Muni's F Line runs past Pier 33 and the Powell-Mason cable car stops nearby. Find more ways to get around San Francisco .

If you have not printed your tickets prior to your tour date then you may pick up your tickets at Pier 33 at the Prepaid Ticket booth (will-call). Please arrive  half an hour (one hour during peak seasons) prior to your departure time  to check-in.

13. Is Alcatraz Always Open?

Almost! It’s closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. That’s it!

14. How About a Night Tour?

Night tours are available  Tuesday-Saturday . They feature special programs and a wicked view of the city skyline.

15. How Long Will I Be There?

For a Day Tour, block out  2.5 to 3 hours . That includes the 12-15 minute ferry each way.

16. Can I Bring My Own Lunch?

Nope! The island is a bird sanctuary. You can bring bottled water though!

17. Tell Me About the Audio Tour

You’ll get a pair of headphones and an audio guide that’ll walk you through the Alcatraz Cellhouse. It’s available in  11 languages , and you can get refunds on the island if you change your mind.

18. What Should I Wear?

Something comfy and weather-appropriate. SF can be super foggy and chilly, even in summer.

On The Island 🏝️

19. how much time do i need.

The rule of thumb is about  3 hours  for a complete experience. You’ve got the ferry ride, the walking tour, the audio guide, and maybe some chill time.

20. Is There Food on Alcatraz?

You wish! But nope, you gotta eat before you board or after you return to the mainland. No picnic spots on this island it’s a bird sanctuary.

21. The Audio Tour: How Long is That?

The audio tour lasts about  45 minutes , but you can pause, rewind, or fast-forward if you like. Plus, there’s tons of stuff to explore beyond what the audio guide covers.

22. What’s the Weather Like?

This is SF, baby! Expect the unexpected. It can be sunny one moment and foggy the next. Mornings are often chilly and afternoons can warm up, so  layers are your best friend .

23. What About Wildlife?

Seagulls are the real VIPs here. Also, harbor seals sometimes hang out around the dock. No squirrels though, in case you were wondering.

24. Best Time to Visit?

Honestly, anytime is a good time, but  spring and fall  offer the best combo of good weather and fewer crowds.

25. Accessibility?

Alcatraz is pretty steep and hilly, but there’s a  S.E.A.T. Tram  that can take you from the dock to the cellhouse. Much of Alcatraz is steep and hilly, so be prepared for walking long distances uphill. The distance from the dock to the prison at the top of the Island is about .25 mile (.4 km) and the elevation change is 130 feet (40 meters). This is equivalent to climbing a thirteen-story building. Visitors unable to make the climb up Alcatraz’s roads may take advantage of the  S.E.A.T. (Sustainable Easy Access Transport) Tram  — an electric shuttle that meets each scheduled arrival at the Alcatraz dock and transports visitors requiring mobility assistance from the dock to the prison building. S.E.A.T. returns visitors requiring mobility assistance from the prison building back to the dock at regular intervals throughout the day.

The following areas are completely wheelchair accessible:

  • Alcatraz dock area
  • Prison building main floor
  • All bookstores
  • Museum displays
  • Island theater
  • Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing
  • All Alcatraz City Cruises vessels

Miscellaneous 🔍

26. can i reschedule or get a refund.

If something comes up, you can change the date/time for a  $6.50 fee per ticket . Refunds? Only if you cancel  72 hours in advance .

27. Running Late, What Now?

You gotta make it to your specific ferry, otherwise, your ticket is forfeited. No refunds or rescheduling if you miss the boat. Literally.

28. Luggage Policy?

Travel light! No luggage, backpacks larger than 16” x 20”, or coolers are allowed on Alcatraz.

29. What is there To See and Do on the Island?

Places you can wander and explore during the Alcatraz Day Tour include:

  • The historic Alcatraz Cellhouse as well as the Cellhouse audio tour
  • Eagle Plaza, Recreation Yard, the Sallyport, and the Rose Garden
  • Iconic views of the Cellhouse, Building 64, Water Tower, Warden’s House, Officer’s Club, and Model Industries Building
  • Native American Occupation era political messaging on the exterior of many Island buildings
  • Special access to “Red Power on Alcatraz: Perspective 50 Years Later” – an extensive exhibit telling the story of the 19-month Native American occupation of the Island on display in the New Industries Building

A new permanent exhibit: The Big Lockup: Mass Incarceration in the U.S.

30. Can I Take Photos?

Absolutely, and you should! Just no drones, tripods, or commercial photography without a permit.

31. How Do I Get Back?

Ferries leave Alcatraz  every 30 to 40 minutes , and it’s all on a first-come, first-served basis.

32. Parking? Public transit?

No parking is available at Pier 33. There are fifteen commercial lots within a five-block radius of Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing with a total of more than 3,000 parking spaces. The closest and most convenient lots are located at 55 Francisco Street and 80 Francisco Street. Rates can range from as $40-$60 per day for parking. There are no parking validation services offered.

For the best public transportation route, please visit  511.org’s website  to map out the best public transportation routes. One option to get to Pier 33 is to take the F streetcar line that runs from Market Street down the Embarcadeo. This historic streetcar runs about every 15 minutes.

Alright, buddy, that’s a wrap! Visiting Alcatraz is more than just a ferry ride and a walk through an old prison. It’s a journey into America’s complex history, spiced up with incredible vistas and an eerie yet captivating atmosphere. So grab your camera, your sense of adventure, and maybe even a spooky story or two to tell when you get back. Helpful Tips-Alcatraz Cruises

Helpful tips for before and during your trip, constructions updates.

Pardon Our Dust: there are ongoing visitor improvements underway at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing, the departure point for Alcatraz Island ferries in San Francisco as well as on Alcatraz Island. These improvements are beneficial to the guest experience and will not impact Alcatraz Island operations.

Face coverings are highly recommended in boarding areas, onboard Alcatraz City Cruises’ vessels, and all indoor spaces on Alcatraz Island.

Advance purchase is highly recommended because of the limited number of visitors allowed on the Island each day. Alcatraz Island tour tickets can sell out several weeks in advance . Plan ahead and choose the day and time convenient for you!

You can stay on Alcatraz Island as long as you like, but allow at 2.5 – 3 hours for cruising to the Island, exploring the Island and returning via ferry to Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing. It is recommended that you line up one half hour prior to your departure time. See our  departure and return schedules . Our ferries leave on time and your departure time is shown on your ticket.

Picnicking and consuming food on Alcatraz Island is allowed (standard size backpacks only; picnic baskets or coolers of any size are not allowed) at the dock area from the picnic tables to the restrooms only. Bottled water is allowed on all areas of the Island.

A government issued photo ID is required for every person who books tickets to Alcatraz Island. Government issued photo ID’s are required when purchasing and picking up tickets at the Alcatraz City Cruises Ticketbooth, and may again be required in the boarding area. Customers purchasing and printing Alcatraz tickets online should arrive at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing with their government issued photo ID. Photo ID’s are not necessary for every person in the party, but are required for the person who purchased the tickets. Photocopies of passports are accepted as valid identification. Please leave your actual passport in a safe place back at your hotel.

The roads and walkways on Alcatraz are steep. The distance from the dock to the Cellhouse is approximately 1/4 mile (.4km) and the elevation change is 130 feet (40 meters), the equivalent of walking up a 13-story building. The roads and walkways are wide with several places to stop along the way to rest and take in the breathtaking views. Comfortable athletic or walking shoes are strongly recommended. If you have mobility concerns, please see the S.E.A.T. Tram information below.

For those that wish to get started mapping your route on Alcatraz Island, please visit the  National Park Service website page . There is a directional map of the Island including where your audio tour begins, the restrooms, and buildings including the Cellhouse. For those who wish a more detailed and historical account of the Island and its resources, please visit the  National Park Service website page .

Minors under the age of 18 are not allowed to visit Alcatraz Island unless accompanied by an adult, 21 years of age or older. Minors must be supervised at all times while visiting Alcatraz Island, Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing and while onboard Alcatraz City Cruises vessels.  Children under age 12 are not accommodated on the Behind The Scenes Tour.  No refunds will be given if Adult or Senior tickets are purchased for children under age 12.

There is no storage space for luggage or oversized bags at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing or on Alcatraz Island. Standard backpacks, measuring 16” x 20” maximum, are allowed on Alcatraz City Cruises vessels and while visiting Alcatraz Island.

We regret that we are unable to accommodate suitcases, ice chests, large backpacks or oversized duffel bags at Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing or on Alcatraz Island. Additionally, there are no lockers, and luggage or oversized packages and bags cannot be boarded on vessels or stored at Pier 33.

Bags larger than a standard backpack, 16” x 20”, are not allowed on Alcatraz Island. Visitors with luggage or oversized packages and bags will be unable to board Alcatraz City Cruises vessels or visit Alcatraz Island and will receive refunds. There are no exceptions to this regulation.

NOTE:  Backpacks, handbags, parcels and packages are subject to search at any time for security purposes.

Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing is fully accessible. Many areas on Alcatraz Island are also accessible with the use of the S.E.A.T. Tram.

Visitors with limited mobility and unable to make the climb up Alcatraz Island’s steep roads can take advantage of the S.E.A.T. Tram, the accessible shuttle that runs approximately twice an hour from the Alcatraz Island dock to the Cellhouse and approximately twice an hour from the Cellhouse back to the Alcatraz Island dock.

Boarding S.E.A.T is on a first come, first served basis. Anyone with a health condition or physical disability which limits mobility qualifies for a ride on S.E.A.T. The use of S.E.A.T. is limited to those with the physical need only. Family and friends, who are physically able to make the walk, are advised to walk to the designated arrival area to meet S.E.A.T. passengers. One personal attendant is permitted for those who physically cannot board/disembark the tram under their own power or cannot be safely left alone. Common examples of those needing an attendant are visitors who are in wheelchairs and the visually impaired. Children of any age, on foot or in strollers, can only ride if they meet the above qualifications, or if no other friends or family members can walk up the hill with them. Please speak to the driver for further information, or to see if you qualify. See  additional information  and a schedule for the S.E.A.T. Tram. We are sorry, but due to space limitations, children in strollers are not able to ride S.E.A.T.

Further information regarding accessibility on Alcatraz Island, including tour information in American Sign Language, and use of Assisted Listening Devices can be found in the  Accessibility Section .

Bicycles, skateboards, roller blades, skates, “wheelie” shoes and weapons are not allowed on Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing, Alcatraz City Cruises vessels, or on Alcatraz Island. Limited bicycle parking can be found at Pier 33 on a first come, first served basis. Bicycles must be walked to the bike racks upon arrival at Pier 33. Alcatraz City Cruises assumes no responsibility for bicycles parked on premise.

Why travel to Moscow

Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.

Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.

Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow

It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.

Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022

The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Cheap as Caviar

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead
