The Bottom Line

After pandemic-induced delays, family-owned river cruise line AmaWaterways had a big year in 2021, debuting three new ships to its international fleet, including the AmaSiena, sister to the AmaLea and AmaKristina, which was christened on Europe’s Rhine River in August 2021. I had the chance to sail the new vessel on its first sailing. Here's what I thought.

Pros and Cons

  • Excursions are included
  • Free Wi-Fi onboard
  • Free bicycle rentals
  • Alcohol isn't included outside meals
  • No room service
  • Limited activities and entertainment

Facts and Features

  • Size: 443 feet long by 38 feet wide
  • Maximum Guest Capacity: 156
  • Number of Crew: 51
  • Decks: 4 available to guests

This Ship Is Best For... Couples

As a California-headquartered cruise line, AmaWaterways typically attracts a North American clientele, which holds for the AmaSiena’s passengers. And as with most European river cruises, the demographic skews towards older couples with a moderate activity level (many guests take advantage of the complimentary bicycles available at every port, for instance). That’s not to say that friend groups or multi-gen families wouldn’t enjoy sailing—several cabins do have connecting doors. But there aren’t many activities for children, so younger kids might find the experience a little dry. Overall, the ship has an atmosphere of laid-back luxury.

Itineraries and Ports of Call

The AmaSiena’s home river is the Rhine in Europe. She frequently sails seven-night itineraries between Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Basel, Switzerland, sailing through Germany’s scenic Rhine Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site lined with castles. Ports of call include Cologne, Germany, and Strasbourg, France, and smaller picturesque towns throughout the Alsace region of France and the Black Forest region of Germany. On some days, guests have a choice of excursions to different towns in different countries, so it’s best to do a little research before making your selection—you often will only have time for one, as they’re usually a bus ride away. The ship also sails seven-night itineraries through Holland and Belgium.

What’s Included

  • Meals (with house beer and wine)
  • Daily “Sip and Sail” cocktail hour
  • Bicycle rentals
  • Alcohol (outside of meals and cocktail hour)
  • Spa/beauty treatments

The Ship's Layout

There are four publicly accessible decks on the AmaSiena. Deck One, the Piano Deck, has a few staterooms, plus the massage room, salon, and a fitness center. The next deck is the Cello Deck, home to staterooms and the main restaurant, followed by the Violin deck, with more staterooms, reception, the lounge, a gift shop, and the Chef’s Table restaurant. Most of the public areas are forward of or just behind the central atrium, which houses the elevators, though the Chef’s Table, which is all the way aft. Up top is the open-air Sun Deck, where there’s a running track, a small pool, loungers, and a smoking area. Note that the Sun Deck is only accessible via stairs, not the elevators.

AmaSiena has 78 staterooms across nine room types, each of which can have the bed configured as a queen or two twins. They’re all exterior cabins decorated in the ship’s signature red-and-gray color palette, equipped with hairdryers, safes, telephones, TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi, a desk and chair, and a (somewhat cramped) en-suite bathroom with a shower. Here’s what else you can expect from each room, from least expensive to most.

Categories D/E

These Piano Deck cabins with fixed windows are the smallest onboard at just 160 square feet. If you don’t plan on spending much time in your room, these categories will do just fine, but be forewarned—part of the fun of the Rhine itineraries is sitting outside watching the castles and locks go by. There’s always the lounge or the Sun Deck, though.

Categories CA/CB

These small staterooms on the Cello and Violin decks have French balconies—that is, the floor-to-ceiling window-door slides open entirely. CA cabins (170 square feet) have a small seating area, but CB cabins (155 square feet) don’t.

Categories BA/BB

These 210-square-foot cabins offer guests AmaSiena’s signature double balconies; one true balcony with two chairs and a small table and a French balcony right beside it.

Categories AA/AB

These cabins are practically identical to the previous category, although they provide slightly more space at 235 square feet.

The four 350-square-foot suites have separate living and sleeping spaces, the former of which has a pull-out sofa that can accommodate two extra guests. The bathroom is far more spacious than in other cabins with a double vanity and a tub.

Where to Eat and Drink

All meals are included on AmaSiena. There’s just one main restaurant open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It serves an ever-changing menu inspired mainly by local cuisine—think semmelknödel , or bread dumplings, while sailing through Germany might be paired with a local beer or wine. (Beer and wine are included with lunch and dinner, and sparkling wine with breakfast—otherwise, alcohol is à la carte. But during meals, the waitstaff is quick to refill your glass!) Both lunch and dinner are multi-course affairs—there are multiple options per course—though portions are reasonably small to account for all the dishes. Because of COVID-19, tables were assigned, though it’s open seating in standard times.

There’s also the Chef’s Table, a 32-seat specialty restaurant with a panoramic view from the ship's stern that serves a five-course tasting menu. One dinner here per sailing is included for all guests, but you need a reservation.

Light bites are served throughout the day in the lounge; there are pastries for early or late risers who miss breakfast, tapas for lunch, afternoon tea, a Sip & Sail cocktail hour (alcoholic beverages are complimentary), and a late-night snack served at 10:30 p.m. You can also access a complimentary coffee station here 24/7.

On-Ship Activities and Entertainment

As most of your daylight hours—and sometimes evening hours—will be spent off the ship, AmaSiena offers limited onboard activities. There are fitness classes (during COVID times, these were provided outdoors, weather permitting, rather than in the fitness center), massages and beauty treatments in the one-room spa and salon, a small pool, and an outdoor giant chess set. Otherwise, you’ll have plenty of time for peaceful contemplation in the lounge. So, yes, you should bring a book. There’s usually a musical performance after dinner in the lounge in the evenings.

Off-Ship Activities and Excursions

All excursions are included for guests on the AmaSiena, and while there’s a range for all types of travelers, Amawaterways as a company offers more active excursions than its competitors. At every stop, there’s almost always a general walking tour (guests can choose their activity level: active, regular, or gentle), as well as specialty options like beer or wine tastings, hikes and bike tours, or unique visits to museums. Typically, there’s just one excursion per day, but in some ports, there are nighttime ones; on our sailing, we had the option to leave the ship after dinner in Rüdesheim, Germany, to sample the local coffee or visit a music museum.

Many of these excursions only occupy a portion of your time in port, so there’s usually time to explore on your own after a tour, too. You can also venture off without officially joining an excursion—bicycles are available to borrow any time the ship is docked, and you can always use your own feet or a taxi to get around. There is, however, an exception when it comes to DIYing your own itinerary. In some destinations, guests can choose between different towns that are usually a 30- to 45-minute bus ride away from the dock. In that case, it’s best to pick an excursion to hitch a ride. Once at your destination, you can speak with your guide about going off solo—just make sure you don’t miss the ride back to the ship.

AmaSiena joins AmaWaterways’ legacy of upscale yet relaxed river cruises that cater to more active couples or mature multi-gen groups. The ship primarily sails the Rhine River through Western Europe, whisking guests to fairytale-esque towns and historic cities. As with most river cruises, onboard activities are limited, as the focus is on excursions. In the case of AmaWaterways, and the AmaSiena in particular, bike tours are a highlight. However, there’s always plenty of flexibility while in port for adventures, from wine tastings to museum visits.

Why You Should Consider Booking An AmaWaterways Family River Cruise

Mom son AmaWaterways family river cruise

Once the almost exclusive domain of retirees, river cruising is now a vacation option for families, millennials, as well as older travelers. Family-owned and operated AmaWaterways is at the forefront of this evolution, offering onboard spin classes, active excursions, and interconnecting staterooms for families that prefer to stay together. My family spent a week sailing down the Rhine River with AmaWaterways – it was an incredible experience. Here are a few reasons why we loved cruising with AmaWaterways, and why you should consider an AmaWaterways family river cruise.

River Cruising is A Convenient Way to Travel as a Family

On a river cruise, you can unpack once and effortlessly travel through multiple countries. I can’t imagine a more convenient way for families to travel. There are no worries about unpacking and repacking suitcases at each stop, navigating unfamiliar roads, rushing to catch trains or dealing with airport security. Instead, you can relax, spend quality time together, and immerse yourself in each destination.

AmaKristina AmaWaterways family river cruise

We boarded AmaWaterways’ AmaKristina ship in Amsterdam and experienced four European countries with ease during our week-long family vacation. It was the easiest multi-country family vacation ever!

Delicious All-Inclusive Food Onboard AmaWaterways

As a mom of athletic teenage boys, sourcing nourishing food is a priority when we travel. I had no need to worry about the quality (or quantity) of food onboard AmaWaterways. The diverse, delicious, and all-inclusive food and drinks catered to a variety of passengers. Hungry teens could choose burgers, pizza, and pasta. Gluten-free diners were offered specially-prepared menu items. And adults enjoyed a destination-inspired menu in addition to the expansive buffet.

Family-Style Accommodation

Traveling families that want to stay together can choose inter-connecting staterooms on select AmaWaterways cruises. It was the perfect set-up for our family of four. And three-person families can stay together in a suite.

River Cruising Offers a Unique Perspective

Whether you are a veteran traveler or a first-time visitor to a destination, experiencing it from the river offers a unique perspective. While tourists typically travel over or alongside rivers in cars or trains, river cruisers travel along the river. This offers a glimpse into local life – families picnicking riverside, swimmers cooling off in the water on warm summer days, and barges plying the waterway – and an understanding of the economic, geographic, and historic importance of rivers.

A Variety of Activities Onboard AmaWaterways

Morning exercise classes, an onboard gym, and a choice of three or four daily guided activities kept us as active as we wanted during the AmaWaterways family river cruise.

The small-group excursions are classified according to activity level. Guests can choose a relaxed pace with minimal distance covered, a moderate level of physical activity, or the most active option. It’s also possible (and tempting) to relax onboard the luxurious ship. You can lounge in one of the luxurious common areas, or catch up on emails with complimentary WiFi and in-room computers.

The Family that Cruises Together

Our family planted an apple orchard while our kids were still growing. We had t-shirts made that said, “The family that picks together sticks together.” I’ve always wanted to keep my family close. I speak internationally all over the world and have for the last 25-30 years. So, when we go, I always see if we can take a kid or a few grandkids with us. When the family expanded to 19 of us, I thought, “Wouldn’t it be nice to get together once in a while to do something special?’”

Special Memories

The first time we did this was a hiking trip to the Canadian mountains. Afterwards, our son-in-law who had joined us mentioned this trip as a special memory just before he passed. And that inspired me to plan more of them, like our family’s Paris & Normandy river cruise with AmaWaterways.

Paris & Normandy was the first river cruise we did all together. And it was an ideal approach because it allowed for us to do individual excursions at our own pace or focus on our own interests, while still getting together for dinner every night.

A Rare and Lovely Experience

At 19, we were a big crowd to manage, but AmaWaterways is a wonderful group to work with! In fact, when my husband and I had a difficult problem, they came to the rescue. Our flight was delayed. Everyone was going to be on the cruise ship but us! AmaWaterways had friendly representatives meet us at the airport and drive us to the next location where the ship was docked the next day. We didn’t do anything special to deserve that – they’re just a wonderful company and they made the experience effortless and lovely for us.

During the cruise, I remember wonderful hikes where my family and I would walk and chat together. I usually took one of the ship’s Nordic walking sticks with me, which was very helpful on tricky terrain. The hikes were pleasant and easy.

I found it such a pleasure to see all the cousins on board getting along and being together. It doesn’t happen often because they don’t all live in the same cities and are between the ages of 18 and 31. We started traveling when the youngest were babies! We’ve done many trips, but cruises are my number one favorite.

Bringing Warmth and Families Together

Cruises allow for individuals of different ages, physical abilities and interests to do what they want, and AmaWaterways encourages the togetherness and warmth that accommodate loving families. There’s also room for both spontaneity and pre-arranged excursions, as well as choices at dinner. And the food on board was consistently excellent!

We really did have a very delightful time. It’s a wonderful kind of journey that gives the family time to “play” and takes them away from their cell phones and work pressures. When you cruise, you’re away. And it really is relaxing.

Experience comfort and luxury all-in-one in our spacious suites and connecting staterooms on select ships – perfect for families!

10 Things To Know About a River Cruise with AmaWaterways

ama family river cruises

I’ll admit it. I’m not a fan of mega ship cruising. I’ve sailed on the major cruise lines, but I’ve always preferred the intimacy of smaller ships. The excursions have tended to be higher quality (and included in the price of the cruise), the service has always been impeccable, and the food has been top-notch.

This past Christmas, my family and I tried a new form of small ship cruising: river cruising with AmaWaterways . While similar to our other experiences with companies like Alaskan Dream and UnCruise , river cruises do differ in some ways.

Here are 10 things to know before booking a river cruise with AmaWaterways.

1. Some river cruises have age restrictions and recommendations

It’s no secret that river cruising typically draws an older crowd. Even so, families with kids of an appropriate age are welcome. On AmaWaterways, there is a minimum age to sail, depending on the location. For Europe and Southeast Asia , children under 4 years old are not permitted on board. In addition, AmaWaterways doesn’t recommend the cruises for children, ages 4 to 7. For Africa , there’s a minimum age of 12 years old, due to safety precautions.

In my opinion, I think that the sweet spot for river cruising with kids is age 7 through 13. Kids of this age have a natural curiosity about different cultures and are more likely to embrace the history-focused excursions. They also still enjoy spending time with you, their parents. That being said, if you’re traveling with a multi-generational group (think Grandma and Grandpa), I think kids of all ages would enjoy the family time.

2. Your family may need more than one cabin

As is the case with most small ships, the vast majority of the rooms only accommodate two passengers, meaning a family of four likely would require two cabins. On AmaWaterways, all guests under the age of 18 are required to bunk with an adult. In our case, my oldest son is 19 years old, so my boys could stay together. Ships offer a limited number of triple-occupancy cabins where a child (age 4 to 10) can sleep on a fold-out sofa. You’ll want to talk to an AmaWaterways representative for specifics.

3. You won’t find child-specific programming

While AmaWaterways ships have plenty of programming in terms of on-shore excursions, you won’t find any activities specifically geared to kids. And you won’t find a kids’ club, arcade, climbing wall, go-kart track or swimming pool with corkscrew slides.

KidTripster Tip: Most AmaWaterways ships do have a small, heated pool on their sun decks.

KidTripster Tip: Adventures by Disney does operate river cruises that are geared to kids, and those cruises actually sail on AmaWaterways ships; however, these Disney cruises typically come with a higher price tag.

ama family river cruises

4. You’ll want to choose the most active excursions

On AmaWaterways, every day comes with an offering of on-shore excursions. For city tours, you’ll be given a choice between a relaxed, regular or active pace; always choose the active pace. Better yet, if a more physically-exerting activity is offered, pick that. I have two teenage boys, and they much preferred the days when we were hiking or biking. Frankly, I did, too. It’s the only way that I could justify the amount of food that I was eating on the ship!

Plate of colorful food served at AmaWaterways

5. It’s okay to ask for seconds

The food on AmaWaterways is – without a doubt – the best that I’ve tasted on any cruise line that I’ve sailed. If you have big eaters like my teenage sons, don’t hesitate to order extra food. You want two appetizers? Sure. A second entrée? No problem. Three desserts? Knock yourself out. It’s perfectly fine. Me? I was perpetually stuffed.

KidTripster Tip: In addition to breakfast, lunch, and dinner, there are small tapas and snacks in the main lounge throughout the day. My boys never went hungry!

6. Yes, there’s WiFi, but…

While there is free WiFi available on AmaWaterways ships, I’m going to suggest a radical idea: consider unplugging. Yes, your kids likely will protest loudly at this suggestion, but I urge you to give it a try. Amazing things happen when you spend downtime together without screens. You may rediscover your love of chess. You can impress your kids with your mad Scrabble skills. They may read a book with paper pages . Or… I’m going out on a limb here… you may have an actual conversation.

Don’t believe me? Read why one of our KidTripster Teens advocates for tech-free vacations by clicking here .

KidTripster Tip: The best way to get buy-in from your kids? Lead by example. That… and I’m not against bribery.

Teenagers playing chess on board a ship.

7. Be prepared for downtime

We found that we had more downtime on our river cruise than on previous cruises. If the weather would have been better, I’m sure that we would have spent more time on the top deck swimming in the pool or sitting in the loungers. Instead, we spent most our time in the lounge and the small gym.

KidTripster Tip: Our ship had playing cards and board games to borrow, but the one Scrabble game was always in high demand. Consider bringing a few travel-sized games of your own. You do have movies available on your cabins’s television or plan to download options for your personal electronic devices before you board.

8. Don’t expect to see a lot of other kids

Ok, this cruise isn’t the type where you drop your children at the kids’ club to play with other kids and then pick them up three hours later. Nor is it the type of cruise where your teen disappears for hours to hang out with his new best friends. First, as we’ve explained, there are no clubs for kids or teens. And secondly, with only 156 passengers on board, there likely will be very few other kids.

Our Christmas cruise had a total of 135 passengers. Of those, I’d estimate that there were about 18 people under the age of 22. You’ll find the most kids on board during traditional school holidays: spring break, summer, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

KidTripster Tip: If your kids do want to connect with other kids of a similar age, do it on the first day. You’ll need to make a concerted effort, as the cruise director doesn’t organize any mixers specifically for families.

9. Good option if you’re traveling with grandparents

I think that river cruising is a particularly good option for families traveling with grandparents. Between downtime and meals, you’ll have plenty of time to spend together. But when it comes to on-shore excursions, family members can pick the best options for their particular interests and abilities. So if Grandpa uses a cane and needs a little extra time, he can select the relaxed pace city tour while the grandkids can opt for a bike ride. Then family members can reunite over dinner and share highlights from their day.

ama family river cruises

10. Weather is a factor

When my family and I booked a Christmas Market cruise along the Danube, I pictured in my mind sailing past quaint Bavarian towns with a dusting of snow on their red tile roofs. But the locals told us that – thanks to global warming – they haven’t had a white Christmas in years. Instead, the weather was blustery, cold, and rainy. On our 7-day cruise, we only had one day with blue skies. I’m not going to lie, the weather was pretty miserable, and those cold temperatures impacted how long we wanted to be outside exploring.

Despite the allure of the holiday season, I think that my family would have preferred this itinerary during the summer when the scenery would have been more picturesque and the activities could have been enjoyed under sunny skies.

Understanding AmaWaterways’ Child Policy: Exploring Family-Friendly Cruising Options

Cruising with the family is an exciting and memorable way to explore the world, and AmaWaterways offers a range of family-friendly options to ensure a fantastic experience for guests of all ages. Whether you’re traveling with young children or teenagers, AmaWaterways has carefully crafted their child policy to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for everyone on board. In this guide, we will explore AmaWaterways’ child policy in detail, highlighting the key points that every family should know before embarking on their adventure.

To begin with, let’s take a look at a table summarizing the most important aspects of AmaWaterways’ child policy:

One of the key factors to consider when planning a family cruise with AmaWaterways is the minimum age requirement. In most cases, children must be at least 4 years old to sail. This policy ensures that the cruise experience remains comfortable and enjoyable for all guests, including families with young children.

AmaWaterways also offers designated family-friendly sailings, which provide an array of activities and amenities tailored to the needs and interests of children and teenagers. These sailings feature a dedicated Youth Coordinator who organizes age-appropriate programs and supervised activities, allowing parents to relax and enjoy their vacation while knowing their children are in safe hands.

For families who require additional childcare services, AmaWaterways offers in-room babysitting upon request. This service allows parents to enjoy some alone time or participate in adult-oriented activities while their children are well cared for by trained professionals.

When it comes to dining, AmaWaterways understands that children may have different preferences and dietary needs. That’s why they offer child-friendly menus that cater to young taste buds, ensuring that even the pickiest eaters will find something delicious to enjoy during their cruise.

Families can also take advantage of various stateroom options, including connecting staterooms and triple occupancy configurations. These accommodation choices provide the space and flexibility needed to ensure a comfortable stay for the whole family.

ama family river cruises

AmaWaterways is a river cruise company offering cruises in Europe, Southern Africa, South America, and Egypt. AmaWaterways is classed as a luxury cruise line due to its price range, however, they do have great inclusions and ports of call which is a great value for money.

AmaWaterways has been sailing for more than 21 years on the river. It is a family-owned and operated cruise company which was founded in 2002 by three families. They all wanted to offer the highest-quality river cruise company with locally sourced food and wine; elegant appointed ships with staterooms offering insane views for guests to enjoy the ever-changing countryside and of course hiring the best crew who go above and beyond, treating guests like they are part of the AmaWaterways family.

Why AmaWaterways

With over 20 years of experience of sailing along the world’s rivers, AmaWaterways has focused on providing guests with innovative and unforgettable travel experiences. They want each guest to feel relaxed with all the crew bringing a genuine smile that warms each guest when you step onboard one of their luxury ships you’re transported from one destination to the next. The best thing about cruising with AmaWaterways is that everyday is a “see day” as they cruise past grand capitalines and charming towns, where you will dock near the city center allowing you to step right off the ship and explore the city.

AmaWaterways has 28 ships in its fleet which sail all over the world to destinations such as Europe, Portugal, Vietnam & Cambodia, Africa, Egypt and Latin America. Each ship is designed by the “Godfather of River Cruise” their Co-Founder Rudi Schreiner. Rudi has carefully thought through the designs of the ships, which has landed AmaWaterways multiple awards, such as the Highest Rated River Cruise Ships in Europe! Each Ship offers a luxurious space for 156 guests, offering some of the largests staterooms on the rivers. AmaMagna offers the largest and most luxurious suites on the Danube River. Onboard, the ships have an open-air Sun Deck with expansive space for a walking track, pool or whirlpool, as well as, a bar, sitting area and ample spaces for their host-led fitness classes which is part of their complimentary Wellness Program.

Dining onboard one of AmaWaterways ships, will allow you to indulge in exquisite locally-sourced cuisines prepared by award-winning chefs. For breakfast and lunch you can enjoy an a la carte in the Main Restaurants, or you can choose from the diverse multi-course menus at dinner, which are all included in your River Cruise Fare! Did you know that Amawaterways was the first cruise line to offer a complimentary fleet of bicycles onboard. They also in the last decade brought out twin-balcony staterooms as well as their first-ever Chef’s Table Speciality Restaurant.

When AmaMagna was launched back in 2019, she brought out their first ever onboard cinema, outdoor spin bikes and Juice Bar! Onboard all of AmaWaterways ships they all feature amenities and venues that allows guests to bring out their best selves. From the complimentary fleet of bicycles onboard their European ships to the sun-deck walking tracks, heated swimming pool, whirlpools and onboard fitness rooms.

With each of their ships they are designed with many eco-friendly elements to reduce their carbon footprint. These elements include LED lighting, solar heating and energy-reducing windows, innovative fuel-reducing engine. They have also added in new solar panels on the roofs of the balconies on AmaMagna in 2023 to help the ship to reduce its fuel consumption and use cleaner energy. Each year during the winter, all of the European ships undergo an annual rejuvenation where everything from interior carpets, to fresh coats of paint, to new fabrics and more are touched up or replaced to ensure to offer a luxurious welcoming public area.

One Family's Christmas Market Experience

What made you decide to take a Christmas Markets river cruise with your family?

Carl: I’m of German descent and wanted to visit my ancestral homeland. My wife Mary and I met a couple in water aerobics class where I mentioned this desire and they provided information for AmaWaterways. We picked a Christmas cruise because my daughter Anne really wanted to visit the Christmas Markets. And as soon as we mentioned it to our son Michael, he was excited to go with us and see the old castles and historical sites. This was the first week-long vacation we were going to take together in a very long time.

Anne: I love hanging out with them, I love travel, and I love shopping, so it was a no-brainer.

Did you all arrive on the same flight or meet up at the ship?

Carl: Our son lives here in Huntsville, Alabama, with us, but our daughter was in Alexandria, Virginia. Our travel advisors did a good job of setting it up so that we all flew to Europe out of Washington, DC together. And there was someone waiting for us when we got off the plane to take us directly to the ship. We had an exceptional welcome from the crew on board.

What was your favorite space on board?

Carl: In the Main Lounge there were seats that faced out through the glass windows and that was where we all spent our down time. It was very comfortable and never all that crowded.

Anne: Definitely the Main Lounge or the Sun Deck – although it was often too cold to be out there for long!

Did you take all of your excursions together or split up?

Carl: In most cases we stayed together. However, we split up in some of the Christmas Markets. Also, in Vienna we went our separate ways. My wife Mary and our son were interested in going to the concert and Anne and I were more interested in roaming around town and seeing the markets. One day Michael and I felt tired, so we decided to sleep in and the girls went their own way and I liked that option!

Did your children feel like they fit in well with the general population on board?

Carl: They weren’t uncomfortable at all. Occasionally we would have other guests at our dinner table or close by and everyone was friendly. They enjoyed the cultural music performance the evening we were in Budapest and decorating the Christmas tree on board one night.

Did your AmaWaterways river cruise bring your family closer together?

Carl: We have always been a close family. However, I would say that the cruise has certainly given us more to talk and reminisce about.

Anne: Yes, it was a great adventure to have shared, and we still enjoy talking about it and looking at Dad’s photographs.

What are some of your favorite memories from the cruise?

Carl: At the Nuremberg Christmas Market, Mary and Anne split off at one point and used that opportunity to purchase a pewter Christmas wall decoration for me. It was a great surprise when I unwrapped it a couple of weeks later and used it in our Christmas cards the following year. And at the Regensburg market, we had a special moment as an organ grinder was playing music. We noticed a child watch and listen from some distance, seemingly mesmerized by the scene.

Anne: The whole thing was just amazing – one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences, really.

Did you find a balance on board of time spent together vs. apart?

Carl: Other than meals, we had a lot of options to do things together or separate based on our interests.

Would you take another AmaWaterways river cruise with your family?

Carl: I would absolutely cruise again with my family.

Anne: It would definitely be a cool thing to do.

"Big Nude Boat" offers a trip to "bare-adise" on a naked cruise from Florida

By Li Cohen

Updated on: May 2, 2024 / 8:20 AM EDT / CBS News

Like to travel light? One cruise ship soon to set sail from Florida is making sure all you need is the bare necessities – no shoes, no clothes but plenty of service.

" The Big Nude Boat " will take travelers from Miami to the Caribbean on "an 11-day adventure back to Bare-adise," the website says. Setting sail from Feb. 3 through Valentine's Day 2025, the trip offers a "stress-free, clothes-free experience" during which up to 2,300 passengers can roam the ship in the nude while out at sea.

"It's our pleasure to provide you with the luxury of deciding what NOT to wear," Bare Necessities Tour and Travel says.

@cbsmornings Would you dare to set sail on a nude cruise? 🚢 Cruisebare's upcoming full-ship nude cruise, departing from Miami in February next year, is making waves. Even #TonyDokoupil is down to go. 🌊 #cruises #vacation #experience #miami #sail ♬ original sound - CBS Mornings

Passengers won't be allowed to be naked when the ship is docked, but can ditch their usual attire once they are anchored or out on the water. And when clothing is optional, standard nudist etiquette must be abided by, the website says. When sitting, nude passengers must either wear a thong or sit on a towel or some kind of fabric. And while the self-serve buffet on the pool deck is a clothes-free area, passengers must be dressed for all dining room meals – and no, bathrobes don't count.

Photos and videos will also not be permitted unless all individuals being documented give consent.

"The Big Nude Boat" is just one of the cruises offered by Bare Necessities, which says on its website that the company has been "working to break down the barriers against social nudity and make clothing-optional vacationing a viable and acceptable option for all."

"Social nudity is not a sexual activity, and we strive to dispel the misconception that it is anything but natural and beautiful," the company says. "We have made strides in the acceptance of nude vacationing and our wide range of cruise charters are a testament to our success."

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

ama family river cruises

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

ama family river cruises

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

ama family river cruises

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

ama family river cruises

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

ama family river cruises

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

ama family river cruises

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

ama family river cruises

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
