Can anyone stop Iga Swiatek at the Qatar Open? The world No. 1 has now won the last 21 sets she has played at the tournament after beating Victoria Azarenka 6-4 6-0 to reach the semi-finals. Swiatek is aiming for a third straight title at the tournament and will next play Karolina Pliskova, who beat Naomi Osaka. The other semi will pit world No. 3 Elena Rybakina against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Qatar TotalEnergies Open: Iga Swiatek through to final after Karolina Pliskova pulls out injured

Karolina Pliskova, who won her ninth match in the last 10 days against Naomi Osaka, pulls out of Qatar Open to hand Iga Swiatek a passage through to Saturday's final; watch over 80 tournaments a year, including the US Open, exclusively live on Sky Sports Tennis

Top seed and two-time defending champion Iga Swiatek made it through to Qatar TotalEnergies Open final after her opponent Karolina Pliskova pulled out due to a lower back injury.

Swiatek, who made it 11 straight match-wins at the tournament with victory over Victoria Azarenka on Thursday, will now be bidding to become the first player to win a WTA Tour event three consecutive times since Serena Williams prevailed at the Miami Open in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Pliskova, the 2017 Doha champion, won her first title in four years last week in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. She beat Anna Kalinskaya, Anastasia Potapova, Linda Noskova and Naomi Osaka this week to make it nine match wins in the last 10 days, but her ailing body was unable to recover in time for her showdown with Swiatek.

I'm happy to be in another final here in Doha but I wish we could play tonight and entertain you guys. Hope you'll get well soon @KaPliskova . Congrats to you and your team on your great two weeks.💪🏼 — Iga Świątek (@iga_swiatek) February 16, 2024

"Sorry for the tournament that I had to withdraw, but unfortunately I had too many matches in last couple of days, and my body just didn't react well, especially after last night having a tough match against Naomi," Pliskova said.

"I felt like I was pushing it a little bit over limit, and then I felt very big pain in my lower back, so I'm not able to compete anymore."

WTA Qatar Open Doha

Returning Iga Swiatek headlines mouthwatering Doha Open

Iga Swiatek celebrates

Defending champion and world No 1 Iga Swiatek heads the Doha Open draw as the top seed.

The draw is crammed with top talent as seven of the top ten players in the world turning up.

Ons Jabeur is absent through injury and world No 2 Aryna Sabalenka has not played since her Australian Open triumph while runner-up Elena Rybakina is the other top ten absence.

Swiatek enjoys a bye into the second where she will face either Danielle Collins or a qualifier.

The WTA Rankings queen will also be playing her first match since a shock early exit from the Australian Open to eventual finalist Rybakina.

Swiatek certainly has no reason to be ashamed of that loss considering how well Rybakina played, however, her air of invincibility is fading just a little.

The Doha title will take some defending with the draw anchored by World No 4 Jessica Pegula who is a potential final opponent for Swiatek if she can repeat her 2022 run.

Seventh seed Belinda Bencic or former world No 1 Victoria Azarenka could be potential quarter-final opponents for Swiatek.

On a semi-final collision course with Swiatek, fourth seed Coco Gauff has a first-round bye, and will take on either Zhang Shuai or double Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in her first match.

No 8 seed Veronika Kudermetova will face former Roland Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova in the first round at the bottom of the upper half of the draw.  The winner will face either Liudmila Samsonova or former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in the next round.

Caroline Garcia enjoys a first-round bye as she and fifth seed Maria Sakkari stud the third quarter.

Sakkari is set to face 2022 WTA Newcomer of the year Zheng Qinwen in the first round at the Doha Open.

American No 1 and second seed Jessica Pegula is at the bottom of the Doha Open draw and has a first-round bye along with the other top four seeds.

In Pegula’s opening match she will either take on Jelena Ostapenko, a past champion at Roland Garros, or fellow American Madison Keys in potential blockbuster matches.

Also in the bottom quarter is sixth seed and top-ranked Russian woman Daria Kasatkina. If Kasatkina can get beyond a qualifier she will play one of Paula Badosa or Beatriz Haddad Maia in a challenging but tantalizing round match.

The bottom quarter of the draw is certainly loaded and Pegula would do well to battle her way into the last four.

Making the case for Raducanu and Swiatek in the Stuttgart quarterfinals

STUTTGART, Germany -- World No.1 Iga Swiatek will take on 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu in the quarterfinals of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Friday.

Here's how the matchup shapes up:

The case for Swiatek

The quest for the Stuttgart three-peat is on. With her 6-3, 6-3 win over Elise Mertens on Thursday, the two-time champion moved her sparkling record at the Porsche-Arena to 9-0.

Swiatek looked well at ease in her first match on the clay since her third Roland Garros triumph last year, showing no ill-effects of the quick turnaround from her hard-court turn at Billie Jean King Cup last weekend. It was another ominous sign from the World No.1. Not that she needed much to bolster her reputation in the locker room as the tour's dominant clay-courter.

"I think she's a great example for all of us," Marketa Vondrousova said earlier in the week. "And now clay is coming, so I think it's gonna be very scary."

Swiatek holds off Mertens, remains undefeated at Stuttgart

Raducanu celebrates 'milestone moment' after beating kerber in stuttgart, stopping caitlin clark coco gauff would certainly love to try.

Swiatek holds a 2-0 head-to-head record over Raducanu, winning all four sets the two have played. They also meet at the junior level, where Swiatek rolled past Raducanu 6-0, 6-1 en route to the junior Wimbledon title in 2018.

"Well, she seems like she's getting her game back together, so it's great to see that, because for sure she has potential," Swiatek said. "It's not going to be easy. She knows how to spin the ball and how to move on clay, as well."

Swiatek has lost only nine matches on clay in her entire career, holding a 64-9 record.

As she looks to become the first player since Maria Sharapova to triple up in Stuttgart, Swiatek can tap into her experience earlier in the year in Doha, where she completed the first three-peat of her career. It was a pressure-packed week that she handled with aplomb. She did not lose a set.

"There is always pressure behind me somewhere, you know," Swiatek said. "You can't avoid that on this level and when you're a favorite in every match. So I'm not really thinking about that.

"It's tricky to win three times. I remember how I felt in Doha at the beginning of the tournament. Things were kind of following me, and it was hard to let it go."

Motivation for a 3rd Porsche 😉 @iga_swiatek 🚗 #PorscheTennis pic.twitter.com/c80L8p6H5w — wta (@WTA) April 18, 2024

Swiatek has dropped a set in each of her previous title runs in Stuttgart. That fact will keep her on her toes as she prepares herself for this matchup between major champions.

"It's never an easy tournament, so I don't expect it," Swiatek said. "I'm not taking it for granted or anything. I know that anything can happen in tennis, and if I lose, it's going to obviously be, like, a huge surprise, but it's normal, you know? So I'll try to focus on each match at a time and not think about winning, because it's still a long way."

"It's obviously going to be a really difficult match tomorrow but one where I have zero to lose and I think one that the crowd really want to see." - Emma Raducanu

The case for Raducanu

For the first time since her history-making run to the US Open title three years ago, Raducanu has strung together four consecutive match-wins.

The run began over the weekend at the Billie Jean King, where she led Great Britain to victory with three-set wins over Caroline Garcia and Diane Parry. The momentum has continued in Stuttgart. Into the event as a wild card, Raducanu lost three games to Angelique Kerber and eased past Linda Noskova 6-0, 6-4.

The streak has been run on clay, a fact that doesn't surprise Raducanu. She's never been allergic to the dirt.

"I think it's, one, low expectations," Raducanu said. "You go out there, you're, like, 'OK, we have like two, three clay courts in Great Britain that we can use and practice on it for two weeks. Hey, let's give it a go.'

"It's a combination of that, but it's also I think since a young age I always love moving on this surface. I love sliding. I feel like I'm pretty good at sliding on both legs, which is a strength."

Raducanu holds off Noskova, sets Stuttgart showdown vs. Swiatek

But the success ultimately stems from the hard yards Raducanu has been able to put in since coming back from her season-ending surgery last year. The 21-year-old is stronger than she's ever been, and with that has come self-belief and improved rally discipline.

"I think the fitter I get and the more clean my technique gets, the more I'm able to kind of stay in the longer points and generate from further back," Raducanu said, "whereas I feel maybe before I was having to hug the baseline, play a hard court game on clay as well. It works sometimes, but it doesn't always work.

"I feel like I'm developing more versatility in the way I play. I can adjust. I can adapt. That's a big strength, because certain things, you get into a match and they don't work from the initial plan, so you have to change something. You can completely switch the dynamics of a match sometimes."

Head to Head

  • Sorry, we couldn't find any players that match your search.

Raducanu has never been as strong and confident as she will be when she faces Swiatek on Friday. When the two met for the first time on the tour level, here in Stuttgart in 2022, Swiatek was in the midst of her 37-match win streak. Raducanu pushed her in a 6-4, 6-4 loss.

Once again, she has nothing to lose and can swing freely, and when Raducanu can do that, well, everyone saw what happened in New York.

"It's no secret that I'm tired," Raducanu said. "I have played, like, a lot of tennis in the last week, but I'd way rather be in this position where I have a lot of matches under my belt, feeling confident and good on the court, and tired.

"I think, to be honest, it's a win-win from now. If I win, great. If I don't, I get to rest."

Rybakina had a very disappointing Australian Open , but after that she returned to her usual level, reaching finals and winning titles. Paolini hasn’t been having a very consistent season, but all of her bad results were made up for in Dubai, where she won her biggest career title. Even so, Rybakina is generally the stronger player of the two, even on clay, and should have the slight edge here. Prediction: Rybakina in 3

Marketa Vondrousova vs Aryna Sabalenka

Head-to-head: Sabalenka 4-2 Vondrousova

Sabalenka started the season in the best possible way, by defending her Australian Open title without dropping a single set in the process. Her performances afterwards have been quite disappointing though and she is looking to get back on track here, at a tournament where she lost each of the last three finals. While the title has been lacking so far, reaching the final three times in a row shows that she’s comfortable on this court; she also seems comfortable against Vondrousova, with four wins in a row after losing the first two. Vondrousova will put up a very good fight for sure, but Sabalenka should have the slight edge. Prediction: Sabalenka in 3

Iga Swiatek vs Emma Raducanu

Head-to-head: Swiatek 3-0 Raducanu

Despite losing early at the Australian Open, Swiatek has long proved to be the most consistent WTA player and titles in Doha and Indian Wells have proved just that. The #1 in the world is the two time defending champion at this tournament and while she dominates the tour on hard on well, on clay she’s even more dominant and tough to beat. It will be very hard to stop her in this clay season and Raducanu is extremely unlikely to be the one to do it. Prediction: Swiatek in 2

Coco Gauff vs Marta Kostyuk

Head-to-head:  Gauff 2-0 Kostyuk After an amazing end of 2023, Gauff hasn’t really found her groove yet in 2024, although she has got some good results (but not a big title or final yet). She has proved to be very good on clay and is arguably the second favorite to win Roland Garros this year after the inevitable Iga Swiatek. Kostyuk challenged Gauff a lot at the Australian Open, but she shouldn’t put that much resistance here in Stuttgart. Prediction: Gauff in 2
