Alcaraz Youngest Year-End ATP No. 1 Presented By Pepperstone In History

atp tour in december 2022

When Rafael Nadal was eliminated from semi-final contention at the Nitto ATP Finals on Tuesday evening, history was made. Nineteen-year-old Carlos Alcaraz will become the youngest year-end ATP No. 1 presented by Pepperstone in history (since 1973), making him the first teen to accomplish the feat.

The Spaniard has enjoyed an unforgettable rise in 2022, ascending from World No. 32 at the start of the year to the top of the men’s tennis mountain on 12 September. That is the biggest jump to No. 1 in 50 editions of the year-end Pepperstone ATP Rankings.

Before this year, the youngest year-end ATP No. 1 was Lleyton Hewitt, who was aged 20 years, 275 days when he did it in 2001. Alcaraz will be 19 years, 214 days on 5 December, the 2022 year-end ranking date following the last ATP Challenger Tour events of the season.

Alcaraz is the 18th year-end ATP No. 1 presented by Pepperstone in history and the first outside the Big Four of Novak Djokovic (7), Roger Federer (5), Nadal (5) and Andy Murray (1) since Andy Roddick in 2003. The 19-year-old joins Nadal (2008, 2010, 2013, 2017 and 2019) as Spanish year-end No. 1s.

The 2021 Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals champion made an early splash this year when he became the youngest ATP 500 champion in series history (since 2009) at the Rio Open presented by Claro. The Spaniard followed that victory with his maiden ATP Masters 1000 triumph in Miami.

Alcaraz led the Tour with two Masters 1000 crowns (Miami and Madrid) and five titles overall in 2022. In Madrid, he eliminated Nadal, Djokovic and then-World No. 3 Alexander Zverev in consecutive matches to lift the trophy.

Alcaraz's biggest title run was at the US Open, where he became the youngest men’s singles winner at the American major since 19-year-old Pete Sampras in 1990. He is the youngest Grand Slam champion in men's singles since 19-year-old Nadal at Roland Garros in 2005.

The teen completed his year with a 57-13 record, including nine wins from 14 matches against Top 10 opponents.

ATP 2022 rewind: Alcaraz’s rapid rise, Federer’s farewell

It’s time to sit back and reflect on another stellar season on the ATP Tour.

Carlos Alcaraz / Trophée n°1 mondial

It’s a cliché which has been frequently used during the prolonged tail end of the ‘Big Four’ era, but 2022 truly represented a changing of the guard.

The usual suspects collected plenty of the major prizes, however, teenage prodigies and Next Gen names established themselves at the top table.

Alcaraz claims the throne

For a couple of seasons the hype and rich excitement surrounding Carlos Alcaraz was simmering. In 2022 it simply exploded.

The Spaniard’s spell-binding rise to the top was inevitable, but very few called it this quickly.

A Miami Masters triumph in March set the tone for big-stage brilliance. His slingshot strokes, relentless defence and bravery in the pivotal moments was capturing the attention of the sporting world.

Over to the clay and Alcaraz clinched the Madrid Masters by overcoming Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, en route to a quarter-final showing at Roland-Garros .

Carlos Alcaraz & Alexander Zverev / Madrid 2022

There was more. At the US Open the teenage sensation had the chance to launch to world No.1 . Wow, the human highlight reel exploits came to the party. Alcaraz won several late night turned early morning thrillers to lift his maiden Grand Slam .

In doing so, the 19-year-old became the youngest world No. 1 since the rankings began in 1973.

Records were tumbling everywhere, as the Murcia native ended the ‘Big Four’ reign, the first player other than Nadal, Djokovic, Roger Federer or Andy Murray to finish the season No.1 since Andy Roddick in 2003.

Times are changing in men’s tennis and with Alcaraz at the helm, we are set to be treated to scintillating entertainment.

“For me it’s a dream come true being No. 1 in the world, to be a Grand Slam champion,” said Juan Carlos Ferrero’s protege.

“Everything has come so fast. I didn’t think at the beginning of the year that I’m going to have this year. I always believe in my team and in my work… Everything pays off.”

Carlos Alcaraz & Casper Ruud / US Open 2022

Nadal defies logic with major silverware

Never giving up, never counted out, Rafael Nadal’s archetypal fighting qualities were emboldened this season.

The 36-year-old was restricted to only one tournament in the final seven months of 2021 due to chronic foot pain and talk of retirement within his camp loomed.

Most players would be justifiably deflated, bemoaning their luck. Nadal is not like most competitors.

Somehow the 2009 champion grew throughout the Australian Open to then reel in Daniil Medvedev from two sets down in the final . The five hour 2-6, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 comeback of all comebacks bottled up everything that makes Nadal one of the all-time greats.

"Without a doubt it is one of the most emotional wins of my career," admitted Nadal, who then suffered stress fracture in his rib shortly after Melbourne.

The ruler of Court Philippe-Chatrier was playing in “extreme conditions” in Paris, having multiple injections in his troublesome left foot in order to compete at Roland-Garros.

Again, the champion instincts kicked in, Nadal overpowering Top 10 rivals Felix Auger-Aliassime , Djokovic and Alexander Zverev , before swatting aside Casper Ruud for a men’s record-extending 22nd Grand Slam trophy and 14th Roland-Garros trophy shoot.

"It is very difficult to describe the feelings that I have. It's something that I never believed; I would be here at 36, being competitive again, playing in the most important court of my career one more time in a final,” hailed Nadal, finishing in the world’s Top two for a record 13th time.

"It means everything to me. It means a lot of energy to try to keep going.”

Swarm of stars circling top table

The 2022 campaign witnessed the transition for Casper Ruud from emerging talent to major contender.

The humble Norwegian has catapulted up to world No.3 off the back of two Grand Slam runner-up spots at Roland-Garros and the US Open .

Just 23-years-old, this season proved Ruud’s rock-solid game as well as his steely belief has the potential to dismantle most opponents. Get used to seeing the Norwegian in latter stages of major play.

Rafael Nadal, Casper Ruud, trophées, finale, Roland-Garros 2022

Félix Auger-Aliassime finished 2022 with a flourish, including three titles in as many weeks . That 16 match winning streak enabled the Canadian to crack the Top 10 and take his bow at the ATP Finals. The 22-year-old then galvanised the Canadian squad to grasp Davis Cup glory .

Holger Rune , with a Grand Slam breakout quarter-finals run at Roland-Garros , was seemingly fearless during his year-end winning spree.

Starting 2022 just outside the Top 100, the raw power off the Dane’s racket fired the 19-year-old to four straight finals in the closing stages.

Stockholm and then Rolex Paris Masters silverware success enabled Rune to burst into the Top 10. His Bercy triumph was particularly head-turning having navigated past five Top 10 players in a row, including 7-5 in the decider over Djokovic in the final.

Jack Draper leaped up 223 spots to world No.42, US college star Ben Shelton jumped a staggering 471 positions to finish at an impressive No.97, Brandon Nakashima lifted the Next Gen ATP Finals trophy . Add into the mix comebacks from the likes of Dominic Thiem and Stan Wawrinka, there is serious depth in men’s tennis.

Holger Rune / Rolex Paris Masters 2022

Djokovic has the final say

Despite plenty of drama and controversy back in January, Novak Djokovic still emerged with his 21st Grand Slam title at Wimbledon to remain in reach of Nadal’s total.

Remarkably, the Serbian’s second half of the season dominance has flown under the radar.

Since ruling SW19 for a seventh time in July, Djokovic compiled a 19-2 record, sending out a signal of intent with a record-equalling (with Federer) sixth ATP Finals crown .

After the most testing season on and off the court, the Djokovic swagger is back.

“I don't know what the future holds, but I know that what I hold in my mind is a huge hunger still to win trophies,” said a defiant Djokovic in Turin.

“Make history of this sport, compete on the highest level all around the world, bring good emotions to sports fans, tennis fans. That's what drives me a lot."

Novak Djokovic / ATP Finals Turin 2022

Fan favourite Federer calls time

Balletic, ruthless, goofy, the ultimate icon . Roger Federer waved goodbye to professional tennis.

The 20-time major winner called time on his one-of-a-kind career on social media in September .

“This is a bittersweet decision because I will miss everything the Tour has given me. But at the same time, there is so much to celebrate. I consider myself one of the most fortunate people on Earth,” stated the Swiss. “I was given a special talent to play tennis, and I did it at a level that I never imagined, for much longer than I ever thought possible.”

There was one last treat for fans as Federer was joined by his perennial rivals Nadal, Djokovic and Murray on the same team for September’s Laver Cup in London .

Roger Federer & Rafael Nadal / Laver Cup 2022

Just seeing the ‘Big Four’ back together was a ‘had to be there moment,’ as Federer and Nadal were reduced to tears during an on-court presentation, holding hands in an iconic, viral sporting moment of the year.

“Now, moving forward, it's going to be different but good different. I got a taste of it the last few years, so I'll be fine,” joked Federer, referring to recent stints on the sidelines, before reassuring his worldwide supporters; “To the game of tennis: I love you and will never leave you.”

2022 marked the final collective season of the ‘Big Four’. Their unprecedented dominance has spoilt the sporting world, it will never be seen again.

Time to reflect, time to welcome new names on the rolls of honour.

Billy Harris secures as a spot in the Eastbourne semi-finals with victory over Flavio Cobolli... as the British late bloomer reflects on his incredible recent form

  • Billy Harris defeated Flavio Cobolli to earn a place in Eastbourne semi-finals
  • 29-year-old will make Grand Slam debut after receiving a Wimbledon wildcard

At this rate the guy who used to travel to tennis tournaments in a transit van will be rolling up to Wimbledon in a Rolls Royce.

Billy Harris spent many of his early years on tour sleeping in the back of his van as he trawled round Europe, and in 2022 was outside the world's top 400.

But after the latest win in an incredible run on the grass, the 29-year-old is into the Eastbourne semi-finals and is closing in on the top 100.

On a blustery day on the South coast, Harris took out Italian world No49 Flavio Cobolli 6-7, 7-6, 6-2.

'We used to play a lot in the wind so coming from the Isle of Man definitely helped me today!' said Harris. 'I've had three great weeks in a row and I just want to continue as much as I can. I'm loving it.'

Harris reached back-to-back Challenger semi-finals in Surbiton and Nottingham before winning his first ever ATP tour matches at the Queen's Club and now in Eastbourne.

Before Queen's he had earned £232,000 in his career. Since then he has added £144,000 - and with another £60,000 at least to come from his Wimbledon wildcard, he is close to earning more in a month than he had in nine years.

He plays Australian world No94 Max Purcell in the last four today.

In the women's event, Britain's trio of quarter-finalists - the most since 1978 - were decidedly less enamoured with the conditions.

The breeze played havoc with Katie Boulter's serve as she lost 6-1, 7-6 Jasmine Paolini.

'It was very, very tricky today. It was more about a mental game and trying to stay calm in the wind,' said the 27-year-old. 'I don't think my game really suited it today.'

Paolini may be world No7 but she is a clay court specialist and - after she was ushered into the last eight by a bye and a retirement - this was her first ever tour-level win on grass. A missed opportunity for Boulter.

Dart was thrashed 6-1, 6-2 by Leylah Fernandez and Raducanu went down 6-2, 6-2 to Daria Kasatkina of Russia. Gone with the wind.

In better news, Sonay Kartal won in the final round of Wimbledon qualifying at Roehampton, beating Erika Andreeva, older sister of prodigious world No24 Mirra. That means Britain will have a grand total of 19 players in the singles draws for the Championships - the most since 1999.

Tennis Briefing: Jack Draper serves first ATP title, Bianca Andreescu returns on grass

Tennis Briefing: Jack Draper serves first ATP title, Bianca Andreescu returns on grass

Welcome back to the Monday Tennis Briefing, where The Athletic  will explain the stories from the past week on-court.

This week, grass season began, as tennis players ready themselves for Wimbledon, which starts on July 1.

If you’d like to follow our fantastic tennis coverage, click here .

Can Jack Draper kick on from a title earned with patience?

In the inaugural  The Athletic tennis briefing in April, new British No 1 Jack Draper was at the centre of a curious statistic. He was statistically the “best” returner on the ATP Tour, after facing off against Hubert Hurkacz in Monte Carlo, who at that time was the best server. Draper lost in a tight three-set match symptomatic of his last few months on tour, which culminated in a visibly infuriating five-set defeat to Dutch qualifier Jesper de Jong at the French Open. When Draper lost his serve in the final set, he screamed at himself while waiting for de Jong to serve it out, chastising his passivity.

Not so now. After defeating grass-court specialist Matteo Berrettini 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in Stuttgart to win the Boss Open, Draper is ranked No 31, in line for seeding at Wimbledon, and most importantly looks ready to step into the dominating, aggressive game style that he has always possessed but for a long time has appeared unable to harness. His first-serve percentage is up from 59 to 64 on clay and grass this year, which he credits to his coach telling him to just go for it; his first-serve points won percentage is up from 75 to a staggering 87.

It’s a small sample size of six matches (but still the largest number of matches played on the surface in 2024) and grass will always favour the server, but the signs are promising, with the left-hander appearing a little more willing to embrace risk and hitting more precise spots for the reward of easy points. In becoming the first British man since 2003 to win a grass-court title who isn’t Andy Murray, the most encouraging factor for Draper is that he is finally looking entirely unencumbered.

Is Bianca Andreescu and Naomi Osaka’s showdown a prophecy?

Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu are now one apiece in their head-to-head, in matches five years apart.

Andreescu prevailed in ‘s-Hertogenbosch 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(3) in a display of both players’ quality and resilience, the factors that looked set to form a compelling rivalry at the top of the game in 2019 before life decided to take another course for them both.

Osaka, on the back of nearly taking out eventual champion Iga Swiatek at the French Open, is playing the kind of tennis befitting a four-time Grand Slam champion and former world No 1, while Andreescu is displaying the creativity and intelligence, allied to rocketing power, that won her the U.S. Open in the year of that first meeting. She made it all the way to the final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, losing 6-4, 3-6, 5-7 to Liudmila Samsonova and breaking into tears when thanking her team and family on court for their support in the hard years.

Most crucially, both players look like themselves, off court as much as on it, weathering the difficult art of the tennis comeback while giving Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka, and Elena Rybakina some pause for thought about the next while at the top of the WTA Tour.

If Osaka and Andreescu can stay fit, this match-up in the Netherlands will presage many more in bigger matches to come.

Naomi Osaka and the cruelty of tennis comebacks

What can Boulter and Raducanu learn from each other’s trajectories?

For much of Saturday and Sunday, Britain’s Katie Boulter and Emma Raducanu were locked in a thrilling semifinal at the Rothesay Open in Nottingham. Eventually, after three hours and 13 minutes, it was Boulter who prevailed 6-7(13), 6-3, 6-4.

Later that day, Boulter beat Karolina Pliskova in the final to successfully defend the title she won last year. The rankings may not say it because of Raducanu’s injuries, but she and Boulter are considered by many to be Britain’s two best female players, with remarkably different career trajectories.

On one side there’s Raducanu, still only 21, who exploded with that highly improbable U.S. Open win three years ago as a qualifier. She has since struggled with injuries and her semifinal run in Nottingham was her best performance at a tournament for almost two years.

atp tour in december 2022

Boulter, by contrast, is perhaps older than some might expect at 27 and has had a much more steady career. She too has suffered with injuries but now sits at a highly creditable world ranking of 31, a long way above Raducanu, who while still battling back from multiple surgeries is down at No 165 and reliant on wild cards to enter the biggest events (including Wimbledon).

Boulter is now at the point where after steady progress she needs a breakout result like Raducanu’s in New York to really elevate herself into the upper echelons, while Raducanu, after a few very up-and-down years, would surely love the kind of serenity her compatriot has started to enjoy. She will hope that last week’s run at Nottingham will be the springboard to do something similar.

The wisdom of crowds: Tricolores, trumpets, and truculence at Roland Garros

What should you look out for this week?

Carlos Alcaraz plays his first tournament since winning the French Open , looking to defend his Cinch Championships title at the Queen’s Club. It was here last year that Alcaraz discovered how well his game worked on grass , having entered the tournament unsure of how to move on the surface and whether he’d be able to master its particular intricacies.

A few weeks later, he had completed the Wimbledon-Queen’s double and his form in west London this week may offer a few clues as to how ready he is to defend his title at the All England Club next month. Ahead of the tournament, he said that his movement would take a little longer to synchronise with the green stuff, but having a clear idea of what he needs to do will make the transition easier.

On the women’s side, the biggest tournament this week is the 500 event in Berlin. Gauff and Sabalenka are the top two seeds there as they begin their grass-court preparation for Wimbledon. World No 1 Swiatek pulled out of Berlin last week off the back of her latest triumph at Roland Garros and will likely go into the next Grand Slam tournament with little preparation on a surface that she is still figuring out. Gauff, Sabalenka and 2022 Wimbledon champion Rybakina will be keen to get a step ahead in Berlin, as they look to take advantage of Swiatek’s relative discomfort on grass.

atp tour in december 2022

At the other WTA Tour event this week, Boulter will look to build on her title win in Nottingham at the Rothesay Classic in Birmingham. Former Wimbledon semi-finalist Jelena Ostapenko is the top seed there.
