Right, I’d say that’s enough from me. You can spring up your T20 leagues, franchises and all that – but you’ll never beat this. One Test down and four more thrillers on the way, with Lord’s the next stop. Can’t wait for it.
Just rewinding back a bit: it’s worth remembering just how good Cummins was with the ball yesterday, taking 4-63 from his 18.2 overs. Gave it everything and produced one of the great deliveries, bowling Pope with a ridiculous inswinger.
Well worth a rewatch.

Ben Stokes has no regrets over England's Day 1 declaration #ENGvAUS | #Ashes pic.twitter.com/jriRcO9fns — ESPNcricinfo (@ESPNcricinfo) June 20, 2023
Still plenty to come from our writers on the ground, but just wanted to say a quick thanks to all the people who have messaged in today to talk about the game and everything surrounding it. It’s been a privilege to be on board for it. And sorry to those whose messages I didn’t get around to sharing.
More words from Khawaja, who now averages 66.87 as a Test opener after 37 innings.
🗣️ "This has definitely got to be one of my favourite test matches I've ever played in!" 🌟 Usman Khawaja reacts to Australia's first Test victory over England in the Ashes. pic.twitter.com/NY1qEB5QnK — Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) June 20, 2023
People loving the tense finish and great cricket and also complaining about the declaration need to have a think about how those two *may be linked* @tahahash — Guy Hornsby (@GuyHornsby) June 20, 2023
“Fair play, right result,” says Stephen Cottrell. “I didn’t agree with the declaration but it made the game on a road and gave England every chance of a win. Only gripe with stokes was keeping Root on after he’d done the trick. From vaulting genius to self indulgence in the time it takes to say ‘Be Here Now’.”
Usman Khawaja is Player of the Match after a brilliant performance across both innings, showing everyone that he can do it in England, too. “I’m not going to lie, I was absolutely shitting myself for the last five minutes,” he says at the post-match presentation. “This is probably my favourite Test match I’ve played in so far.”
That Ollie Robinson line about Australia having 'three No. 11s' hasn't aged terrifically well, has it? — George Dobell (@GeorgeDobell1) June 20, 2023
Cummins, class:
Incredible from @patcummins30 - most runs he has ever made in a Test match. His two highest innings as captain and they've both come in the opening Test of an Ashes series. Lot of talk about Stokes, and fair enough too, but Cummins, wow, what an exceptional leader. — Brydon Coverdale (@brydoncoverdale) June 20, 2023
I get that people are going to take issue with the declaration. But, c’mon, wasn’t all of this just loads of fun? Isn’t that all that really matters for Test cricket right now?
Late on this, from an hour ago, but just want to share this from Adrian Paterson:
“Am following OBO from a lakeside Oslo train, while Dad has blood transfusion back in London. Both lasting 4 hours so far and due to finish in around 40 minutes. A tense simultaneity: Dad’s not such a cricket fan but remembers wartime matches, so we are updating each other by text. I didn’t much like the declaration (or the diagnosis) but if England pull this off (and Dad gets well) might have to tip what remains of my rational mind out of the window and agree that Stokes has power over all things.”
Hope all goes well with your dad, Adrian. Not the result you wanted, but what a game!
“What a game,” writes Huw Swanborough. “Striking to me though, and the joy of test cricket, that it feels like England had the better of the vast majority of the sessions, yet lost the game from pure doggedness from Australia.”
Right then, let me just catch my breath again. Australia were 227-8, 54 runs away and looking out of it. But Cummins, Australia’s captain, thumped Joe Root’s off spin and stayed resolute in the face of short-pitched bowling from the English. Nathan Lyon, a champion cricketer himself, held on from the other end and produced a couple of stunning shots down the ground. The Test champions of the world will go to Lord’s 1-0 up. Just a stunning five days, and a staggering final hour, too.
“Sole Aussie in a pub in London,” writes Mark Doepel . “Fearing for my life. But loving it.”
Cummins’ teammates are all over him. And Nathan Lyon is deservedly getting lots of love too. What a stand they put together, 55 off 12 overs.
Pat Cummins is jubilant, a truly champion cricketer taking it all in. We have seen a stunning Test match here at Edgbaston.
AUSTRALIA WIN BY TWO WICKETS!
Short from Robinson to Cummins, and Pope dives brilliantly at short leg to his right to stop the Australians from stealing another run.
But Cummins does the job, squirting a short ball down to third man for four! They’ve done it! Incredible!
“What a time to answer the call of nature at 3:45am in Australia. Cricket eh? Flipping heck.. " Rowan Sweeney with great timing.
Cummins lets Broad hit him with the short ball. Twice. He won’t budge. Cummins dabs the ball down straight and Broad gets low to halt the prospect of a single. Cummins then pushes to midwicket to steal a single.
Australia need three to win.
Lyon pats away a short ball from Broad , and it drops short of the man at short leg, Ollie Pope. Then Lyon pulls, and it goes past Pope. One more run. Australia need four to win.
91st over: Australia 276-8 (Lyon 15, Cummins 39) Robinson delivers a short ball to Cummins that flies down the leg side. Another short one sneaks past the bat and gloves, Cummins doing well to evade it. And then another bumper follows that Cummins gets under. And then a yorker! Cummins keeps it out, though, backing away as he tried to slap it through the off side. Robinson sends the next one down the leg side. And a dot seals it. The agony for all continues.
Australia need 5 to win.
Australia, I repeat, need five to win. England need two wickets.
“On a plane from Heathrow to Helsinki , plane Wi-Fi patchy at best, and I’m putting it under more stress than it’s used to pulling down for page refreshes more frequently than overs being bowled! Keep the updates coming!” I’m here for you, Harry Sivarajah.
90th over: Australia 276-8 (Cummins 39, Lyon 15) A conversation ensues between Broad, Robinson and Stokes before the final ball of the 90th over. It’s definitely not about tee times tomorrow.
Broad runs in and Cummins clips away for one. Australia need five runs to win and go 1-0 up in the Ashes.
Lyon then clips away for one more. Australia need six to win.
Broad runs in to Cummins and sneaks one past the outside edge! A gorgeous delivery that nibbled away off the scrambled seam – but no bat on it. Broad gets the crowd going, whipping them up, but Cummins clips away for one. Broad is still smiling, somehow, perhaps screaming internally.
WHAT A SHOT FROM NATHAN LYON! He flicks Stuart Broad over mid-on for four and Australia need seven runs to win.
89th over: Australia 269-8 (Cummins 37, Lyon 10)
Lyon pulls for a single. 13 required. Robinson thunders in and Cummins’ forward defence is HUGE. Dot. Robinson slaps Cummins’ pad but the appeal isn’t convincing – that was going down the leg side. 12 required. Lyon clips to the leg side, but there’s no run. A bumper follows, and nothing comes of it.
Australia need 12 to win.
Sums things up.
@tahahash aaaaargh #ENGvsAUS — Ellie Morgan-Jones (@EllenMorganJ) June 20, 2023
88th over: Australia 267-8 (Lyon 9, Cummins 37) Cummins pushes into the off side for one. Lyon resists, pokes at one he shouldn’t but there’s no edge. Broad wonders just what he must do to finish this. He’s been immense all game. Edgbaston roars once more, but Lyon clips away for a single. He keeps the strike.
“As a 60 year old this is the first test match I’ve watched in its entirety,” says Neil Clough. “Have this awful feeling I’ve really been missing out. Brilliant entertainment.” Welcome to the party, Neil, it really is something.
Australia need 14 to win.
87th over: Australia 265-8 (Cummins 36, Lyon 8) Robinson takes the new ball from the other end, not Anderson, and Cummins pushes into the off side for one. Does Robinson stick to the basics against Lyon or does he continue to go short? He strays onto the pads and Lyon clips nicely for a single.
Cummins drives aerially through the covers and Crawley fumbles in trying to stop the boundary – IT’S FOUR! Cummins gets one off the last ball of the over to keep the strike.
Australia need 16 to win.
Michael Fryer writes in: “Over here in San Diego I’m about to put my 2 year old down for a nap. In Lindfield, my friend Tony Cunningham is about to start the bedtime routine for his daughter. We’re cursing the timing!!” Let them watch!
How are your nerves?
86th over: Australia 258-8 (Cummins 30, Lyon 7) Broad is the man to bowl, and Lyon hits an off-drive for four! A staggering stroke, pumped down the ground and a diving Broad couldn’t save it.
Paul Mincher is in trouble: “8% left on my mobile from a campsite in the Dordogne. Go on, England!”
Australia need 23 to win.

Ashes 2023 squad: Full team list, injury updates and replacement news | ENG vs AUS
Australia will tour England for the 2023 Ashes that starts on June 16 in Birmingham – here are the complete squads and full team lists for both teams, along with injury updates and replacement news.
Australia have announced their squad for the 2023 Ashes , about to begin in less than three weeks’ time, while England have announced the squad for their only Test against Ireland right before the first Ashes Test match.
Australia Squad News
The Australian squad has 17 members and will be revisited post the second Ashes Test. Mitchell Marsh and Marcus Harris have earned recalls, while Michael Neser continues to miss out.
David Warner, who has not been in the greatest of forms in Test cricket, has kept his place, but Australia have named as many as four opening batters, including Matt Renshaw, to keep Warner on his toes.
Todd Murphy , who impressed in the Border Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year, has retained his place as the second spinner in the side after Nathan Lyon, while Josh Inglis is in as the backup wicketkeeper for Alex Carey. Among seamers, Lance Morris and Jhye Richardson have missed out due to injuries. Later, Jimmy Pierson was named cover for Inglis.
England Squad News
As far as England are concerned, they are suffering from a string of injuries, mostly to their fast bowlers. Ollie Robinson was seen walking around wearing a protective boot after complaining of discomfort in his ankle. However, scans have revealed that there is no damage and he should be fit for the summer.
Jofra Archer and Jamie Overton have been ruled out of the season with injuries. James Anderson picked up a groin niggle playing for Lancashire but is expected to be fit for the Ashes. And Ben Stokes’ bowling fitness is uncertain at the moment.
Josh Tongue, a young right-arm fast bowler, has been given a maiden call-up to the side for the Ireland Test match. He doesn’t have a great First Class record but had troubled Steve Smith in the County Championship a few weeks back.
Zak Crawley, meanwhile, has kept his place with Rob Key, the managing director of England men’s cricket, saying that they are “ not so much down the road of averages and pure stats “. Ben Foakes, the incumbent wicketkeeper, on the other hand, has lost his place in the side.
England have named a 16-member squad for the Ireland Test, with the squad for the subsequent Ashes series expected to be announced sometime after the Ireland game.

The Ashes: When do England and Australia next meet after drawn men's and women's series in 2023?
With the 2023 Ashes in the books, the men's and women's series two of the greatest ever played, when are England and Australia meeting next? When are the Ashes next held on home soil and what are the venues?

The 2023 Ashes is in the books, with the men's and women's series widely considered to be among the greatest ever played, so naturally thoughts turn to when these two teams next clash - here's a look at when and where England and Australia meet again, and what questions both sides face beforehand...
When do England next tour Australia?
The two nations each host an Ashes series every four years, so it's Australia's turn next as they welcome England 'Down Under' over the 2025/26 winter (their summer).
The men's teams will go head-to-head again over another five-Test series with, traditionally, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth playing host, though not necessarily in that order. Hobart replaced Perth as a venue on England's most recent 2021/22 tour due to stricter Covid restrictions in Western Australia at the time.

The venues and dates have yet to be confirmed for the England men's tour, but Melbourne's famous MCG, which can hold up to 100,000 fans, traditionally hosts the beloved Boxing Day Test, while Sydney's SCG normally brings in the new year.
The Adelaide Test has, for England's past two Ashes tours, been a day/night Test played under lights in the evening sessions and with a pink ball. Hobart also hosted a day/night Test in 2021/22; it is not yet known whether there will be one or two such games planned for 2025/26.

As for the women's Ashes in Australia, it is likely to again be a multi-format series, as has been the case with the past seven series, with one Test match flanked by three one-day internationals and three T20Is. On England's last tour, the T20s were all played at the Adelaide Oval, while the Test and ODIs where shared between the Manuka Oval in Canberra and Junction Oval in Melbourne. No venues and dates have been confirmed for 2025/26 as of yet.
When is the next home Ashes series?
The next home Ashes series will be in 2027, with the venues already confirmed for the men's series, as well as those being used for 2031.

Southampton's Ageas Bowl will host a men's Ashes Test for the first time in 2027, as well as its first women's Ashes ODI that summer, along with the women's Ashes Test in 2031. Headingley will host the 2027 women's Ashes Test.
(*in no particular order) 2027 men's Ashes venues: Lord's, The Kia Oval, Edgbaston, Trent Bridge and The Ageas Bowl 2031 men's Ashes venues: Lord's, The Kia Oval, Emirates Old Trafford, Headingley and Trent Bridge
Could the venues change by 2027?
The announcement of the home Ashes venues for 2027 earlier this summer drew criticism for the lack of an Ashes Test scheduled north of Nottingham.
England men's Test captain Ben Stokes, who performed so heroically in firing England to a memorable Ashes win at Headingley in 2019, and led his team to victory there again this year, admitted he was "devastated" at the prospect.
The mayors of Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire have also since voiced their displeasure, urging the ECB to reconsider its allocation.
Andy Burnham (Greater Manchester) and Tracy Brabin (West Yorkshire) have written an open letter describing the allocation of venues as "remarkable" and criticising the fact that London "consistently hosts three Tests every summer".
What does the Ashes form guide say?
It makes for pretty grim reading from an England point of view.
Australia are the holders of both the men's and women's Ashes, successfully retaining the Ashes as holders by drawing their respective series in England this summer.
England's men last tasted victory in 2015, while their most recent Ashes win 'Down Under' was in 2010/11, with the team failing to win a single Test match on the three tours since, suffering a staggering 13 defeats in 15! That said, with Stokes' side drawing this summer's series 2-2, England did at least extend their proud record of remaining unbeaten in Ashes series at home since 2001.
England's women were last victorious in the Ashes on their 2013-14 tour of Australia and have lost three of the five series since, drawing the other two in 2017-18 and this summer.
Will England and Australia meet sooner than the Ashes?
The next meeting between the two teams, in any format, will be at the men's 50-over World Cup later this year, as Jos Buttler's England look to defend the title they won in such dramatic fashion on home soil in 2019.
The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahemdabad, India, is the venue on November 4 as England and Australia meet in the group stage, while a further semi-final or final clash could also potentially be on the cards.
India also plays host to the women's 50-over World Cup in 2025, while there's a men's and women's T20 World Cup scheduled for next year in which England and Australia could face off. The men's tournament takes place in the West Indies and USA in June, while Bangladesh host the women's tournament in September.
England's men's side are the current holders of both the 50-over and T20 World Cups, while the same is true for Australia's women.
In addition to all of the above, the Australian men's white-ball side visits England next summer, with three T20Is and five ODIs scheduled for September.

Here we have made available for you the FTP schedule of every test playing country. We have a drop down bar below. All you have to do is select the country of your choice from the drop down bar and a list will appear in front of you which will have the upcoming bilateral series schedule of that country. They're not the game's cheapest tours, but they guarantee access to the world's most boisterous, risque, musical, and subdued cricket grounds, where we have been enjoying (mostly) Ashes Cricket since 1997.
From 'jolly-good-show-old-boy' historic Lord's , to middle-ear rupturing endless singing at Edgbaston , the relentess one-eyed Lancastrians of Old Trafford , the humourous lambasting of Headingley , to 'fight-to-the-last-breath' proud Oval , where ' English Cricket died on August 29, 1882 ' , after which bore cricket's most treasured trophy, The Ashes .

Official UK Ashes 2023 Tour Operators buy match ticket and hotel packages from Cricket Australia Travel Office (CATO), as do we. Some may repackage these with a wealth of extras you may not want such as transfers, intercity travel, trips to Europe, day trips, theatre nights, etc..., all for a lot more money.
Our UK Ashes 2023 Tours Only Include:
- 6 Nights Hotel Per Test
- Breakfast Daily
- Reserved Seat Tickets Days 1-4
- General Admission Ticket Day 5
- Commemorative Apparel
- CATO Pre-Test Match Function
You will be responsible for travel to, from, and through the UK, nights between tests, and travel to/from each day's play. Unlike our Australian Cricket Tours to South Africa , West Indies , or India that often include transfers, day trips, road trips, or visits to other cities, our UK Ashes 2023 Cricket Tours will provide much-needed match tickets and hotel, with no add-ons except commemorative apparel.
4- and 5-star hotels that are selected by CATO (which we then choose) determines each test tour price. Prices vary for each hotel but we intend to offer the most affordable for each hotel chosen. Prices are also affected match tickets & foreign exchange. In 2019, match tickets at Lord's were £155 (A$280) per day so expect £180+ (A$350+) per day in 2023.

Our UK Ashes 2023 Cricket Tours won't have the cultural flavours that we include on other tours, because we are focussed on providing the most affordable way for you to enjoy an Official Tour. Our tours are for you to see Ashes Test Match Cricket , not the coal-mining museum or vestiges of British fishing. All sightseeing is up to you!

With so much to see and do away from the game, and with 3 - 8 days between Tests, easy travel options allow you to visit friends or family, Edinburgh or Estonia . In Ashes Tours past, some have driven to Land's End or John O' Groats . Many railed to Scotland, sailed to Ireland, or planed to Portugal. Direct flights from all cities take you anywhere in Europe and we hope you milk that travel opportunity.

As straight-forward as our UK Ashes 2023 Cricket Tour may be, we still include our near 30 years of touring experience to support you as required, notwithstanding we have lived in London since 1995!
We look forward to welcoming you to England in 2023 but feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
