2. Create Engaging Ads

B2B doesn't have to be boring. Create content that captures attention and engages viewers. This can be through informative videos, eye-catching infographics, or thought leadership posts that position your company as an expert in your field.

3. Utilize Lead Generation Forms

Many social platforms offer lead generation functionalities, like LinkedIn’s Lead Gen Forms, which auto-populate with the user’s profile data when they click your ad. This reduces friction in the lead generation process, making it easier for users to sign up or express interest without leaving the platform.

4. Showcase your Lead Magnets

Not every ad should ask users to 'book a demo' or 'buy today'. Instead, promote some of your best lead magnets to cement yourself as a thought leader in the eyes of your ideal customer. Whether it’s an industry report, a sponsored article, or just a good old-fashioned whitepaper, driving traffic to your lead magnets is invaluable.

Build landing pages that inspire action

Your ads will only deliver the desired results if they link to equally powerful landing pages. When a potential customer clicks on an ad, they need to land on a page that delivers valuable information that is relevant to them.

For example, if a person searches for the best wireless security cameras, and your ad pops up, you want to make sure that it leads them to wireless cameras specifically. A common and costly mistake would be to lead them to your entire security camera selection, not a filtered landing page.

Optimize Your Lead Generation Forms

When it comes to lead generation forms, brevity is your friend. Lead gen forms should be short, sweet, and to the point, and they should offer some value to the visitor (like a lead magnet). Make sure the user has to fill out no more than 6 info boxes to complete the form. Just two or three is ideal.

Here are some types of lead gen forms to add to your site:

  • Newsletter signup
  • Email in exchange for a discount code
  • Account Registration in exchange for access to resources

It’s critical to track every step of the customer journey to understand what’s driving sales and where customers are dropping out of your marketing funnel.

Marketers know that most buying behavior starts before a customer enters the market. According to research by John Dawes, 95% of buyers that we reach with B2B marketing efforts are not in the buying stage. Heck, they might not even be in the consideration phase. But they are in the muscle memory stage.

What do I mean? I mean that a strong brand that is memorable, creates amazing experiences and connects with people will be top of mind for potential buyers when they are ready to make a B2B purchase. As Peter Weinberg and Jon Lombardo note in this article , “Marketers don’t move buyers in-market – buyers move themselves in-market based on their needs.” If they don’t know your brand when they enter the market, then it’s already too late.

When I was promoted to CMO of NetApp a little over a year ago, I knew my first agenda item was fixing our brand identity crisis. We knew how to tell our product story, and we did that well, but when it came to defining our company story and articulating the value we bring to the market, we needed to do some work.

Alignment starts at the top.

The first step in reconstructing my company’s brand story was to justify the investment I was about to make with leadership. I needed my CEO, CFO and the NetApp board of directors to understand that brand delivers value to business revenue and growth. According to Forrester’s Business Trust Survey, 2023 , 77% of purchase influencers are likely to trust an organization based on their brand awareness. I think every CMO out there will agree with me when I say that cutting back on brand investment hurts the business because, without a strong brand, we risk losing customer affinity and competitive edge. Consistent investment in brand efforts is key, and we may need to adjust budgets from time to time, but finding a balance is crucial.

Based on the experience of the CMOs in my network, when we lead our marketing organizations to prioritize brand investment alongside other marketing activities, we contribute to business stability, demonstrate innovation and foster customer loyalty.

Walk before you can run.

For NetApp’s marketing team, once we had the backing of leadership, we started talking. We talked to everyone—inside and outside of the company—to message test and gather market research. We asked trusted analysts, our customers, partners, creative agencies and our own employees what they thought NetApp stood for.

We then mapped responses and found overlap and connection points. That’s where we began framing the new NetApp story. And, at every point in this journey, we stopped to ask for feedback on our progress with these same audiences.

After months spent on our “labor of love” crafting and testing, we landed our aha moment: “NetApp is THE intelligent data infrastructure company.”

This brand narrative resonated instantly. It tells the story of not only who we are as a company today, but also where we’re going in the future.

A memorable and trusted brand will continuously drive return on investment.

A memorable brand that clearly articulates the value your business delivers helps it stand out from the crowd. Of course, marketing lead generation efforts are important; good marketers and business leaders know that generating demand must be tied to everything we do. But what I think often gets overlooked is that demand starts with your company’s brand.

To me, when buyers understand your brand, audiences not only have positive associations with your business, but they also understand the value your brand delivers. This drives engagement, resulting in higher website traffic, social media interactions, and content sharing. It drives foot traffic to your proprietary events. It makes your business one with whom people want to do business.

A strong brand aligns and empowers employees, transforming them into brand ambassadors who provide consistent experiences and advocate for the brand within social networks and community spheres.

And perhaps most importantly, great marketers know that a strong brand builds customer loyalty by fostering emotional connections that differentiate a business from competitors. This leads to sustainable growth, an expanded customer base and profitability.

The brand narrative is only the first step in demand generation.

As CMOs, we are the stewards of our brands. It is our responsibility to ensure business brand integrity and successful penetration in the market. I am just one CMO in a long line of B2B CMOs who have come before me or who are in place now. We know that a brand refresh is a heavy lift with considerable time and resource investment. And we also know that it’s only part of the journey. We’re responsible for generating business demand, growth and customer loyalty. Creating (or re-creating) the brand is just the first step.

  • Architecture alliances let commerce solution providers refocus on their B2B customers’ needs. Commerce solution vendors’ partnerships with Amazon Web Services, Azure, and Google Cloud Platform are more than just hosting and reselling arrangements: They’re architecture alliances. This means that your commerce solution vendor isn’t on its own in figuring out how to be cloud-native — the vendor works side by side with architects from the cloud provider. This partnership also means that the commerce solution vendor can refocus on the practical needs of its ideal clients — and in B2B, there’s a wide variety of needs.
  • B2B commerce providers support buying patterns specific to your business model and place in the value chain. Not all commerce solutions are designed for the needs of your particular customer accounts. For example, you won’t need a configurator to sell finished t-shirts for resale. You will need to provide an e-commerce site if you’re selling those t-shirts directly to boutique retail partners — but your big retail partners will use EDI for replenishment. Use this model to help you determine where both you and your customers exist in the value chain. Share this model with the commerce solution vendors on your shortlist. Ask them to connect you to speak with comparable reference clients. Doing so will help you understand how much of the vendor’s capabilities you can use out of the box and how much you will have to build out. Map the needs of your digital strategy to the capabilities (and expertise) that the vendor brings to the table.

OpenAI Expected to Integrate Real-Time Data In ChatGPT

Monday's OpenAI announcement may involve surfacing real-time data in ChatGPT across English, French, and Spanish, with links to original sources

OpenAI ChatGPT announcement

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, dispelled rumors that a new search engine would be announced on Monday, May 13. Recent deals have raised the expectation that OpenAI will announce the integration of real-time content from English, Spanish, and French publications into ChatGPT, complete with links to the original sources.

OpenAI Search Is Not Happening

Many competing search engines have tried and failed to challenge Google as the leading search engine. A new wave of hybrid generative AI search engines is currently trying to knock Google from the top spot with arguably very little success.

Sam Altman is on record saying that creating a search engine to compete against Google is not a viable approach. He suggested that technological disruption was the way to replace Google by changing the search paradigm altogether. The speculation that Altman is going to announce a me-too search engine on Monday never made sense given his recent history of dismissing the concept as a non-starter.

So perhaps it’s not a surprise that he recently ended the speculation by explicitly saying that he will not be announcing a search engine on Monday.

He tweeted :

“not gpt-5, not a search engine, but we’ve been hard at work on some new stuff we think people will love! feels like magic to me.”

“New Stuff” May Be Iterative Improvement

It’s quite likely that what’s going to be announced is iterative which means it improves ChatGPT but not replaces it. This fits into how Altman recently expressed his approach with ChatGPT.

He remarked:

“And it does kind of suck to ship a product that you’re embarrassed about, but it’s much better than the alternative. And in this case in particular, where I think we really owe it to society to deploy iteratively. There could totally be things in the future that would change where we think iterative deployment isn’t such a good strategy, but it does feel like the current best approach that we have and I think we’ve gained a lot from from doing this and… hopefully the larger world has gained something too.”

Improving ChatGPT iteratively is Sam Altman’s preference and recent clues point to what those changes may be.

Recent Deals Contain Clues

OpenAI has been making deals with news media and User Generated Content publishers since December 2023. Mainstream media has reported these deals as being about licensing content for training large language models. But they overlooked a a key detail that we reported on last month which is that these deals give OpenAI access to real-time information that they stated will be used to give attribution to that real-time data in the form of links.

That means that ChatGPT users will gain the ability to access real-time news and to use that information creatively within ChatGPT.

Dotdash Meredith Deal

Dotdash Meredith (DDM) is the publisher of big brand publications such as Better Homes & Gardens, FOOD & WINE, InStyle, Investopedia, and People magazine. The deal that was announced goes way beyond using the content as training data. The deal is explicitly about surfacing the Dotdash Meredith content itself in ChatGPT.

The announcement stated:

“As part of the agreement, OpenAI will display content and links attributed to DDM in relevant ChatGPT responses. …This deal is a testament to the great work OpenAI is doing on both fronts to partner with creators and publishers and ensure a healthy Internet for the future. Over 200 million Americans each month trust our content to help them make decisions, solve problems, find inspiration, and live fuller lives. This partnership delivers the best, most relevant content right to the heart of ChatGPT.”

A statement from OpenAI gives credibility to the speculation that OpenAI intends to directly show licensed third-party content as part of ChatGPT answers.

OpenAI explained:

“We’re thrilled to partner with Dotdash Meredith to bring its trusted brands to ChatGPT and to explore new approaches in advancing the publishing and marketing industries.”

Something that DDM also gets out of this deal is that OpenAI will enhance DDM’s in-house ad targeting in order show more tightly focused contextual advertising.

Le Monde And Prisa Media Deals

In March 2024 OpenAI announced a deal with two global media companies, Le Monde and Prisa Media. Le Monde is a French news publication and Prisa Media is a Spanish language multimedia company. The interesting aspects of these two deals is that it gives OpenAI access to real-time data in French and Spanish.

Prisa Media is a global Spanish language media company based in Madrid, Spain that is comprised of magazines, newspapers, podcasts, radio stations, and television networks. It’s reach extends from Spain to America. American media companies include publications in the United States, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, and Panama. That is a massive amount of real-time information in addition to a massive audience of millions.

OpenAI explicitly announced that the purpose of this deal was to bring this content directly to ChatGPT users.

The announcement explained:

“We are continually making improvements to ChatGPT and are supporting the essential role of the news industry in delivering real-time, authoritative information to users. …Our partnerships will enable ChatGPT users to engage with Le Monde and Prisa Media’s high-quality content on recent events in ChatGPT, and their content will also contribute to the training of our models.”

That deal is not just about training data. It’s about bringing current events data to ChatGPT users.

The announcement elaborated in more detail:

“…our goal is to enable ChatGPT users around the world to connect with the news in new ways that are interactive and insightful.”

As noted in our April 30th article that revealed that OpenAI will show links in ChatGPT , OpenAI intends to show third party content with links to that content.

OpenAI commented on the purpose of the Le Monde and Prisa Media partnership:

“Over the coming months, ChatGPT users will be able to interact with relevant news content from these publishers through select summaries with attribution and enhanced links to the original articles, giving users the ability to access additional information or related articles from their news sites.”

There are additional deals with other groups like The Financial Times which also stress that this deal will result in a new ChatGPT feature that will allow users to interact with real-time news and current events .

OpenAI’s Monday May 13 Announcement

There are many clues that the announcement on Monday will be that ChatGPT users will gain the ability to interact with content about current events.  This fits into the terms of recent deals with news media organizations. There may be other features announced as well but this part is something that there are many clues pointing to.
