The Most Romantic Places to Vacation in July and August

best couple trips in august

The Northern Hemisphere might not be ideal for a romantic getaway at the end of the summer, as this region experiences its highest temperatures and family travelers are out in force.

Many popular vacation destinations in the United States are overrun with students still enjoying the last of their summer vacations. Southern states often experience soaring temperatures and concomitant humidity.

As it is hurricane season in the Caribbean until November 30, travelers in the know avoid most of those islands. And Europe  is on holiday during July and August. It's also is hot, crowded, and disproportionately full of tourists during these months, driving prices on everything from hotels and flights higher and overcrowding the most desirable destinations.

Fortunately, you can still find good weather and romantic experiences during the height of summer, especially if you book well in advance. Cruising is an option, as well as looking to Caribbean islands below the hurricane belt, ditto for faraway tropical islands. And keep in mind that the Southern Hemisphere experiences winter during these months, so if your budget allows, consider destinations on the other side of the world to provide a cool reprieve during the dog days of summer .

Although it might be hurricane season in the southern Caribbean, you should be alright on the northern island of Aruba, which typically escapes the annual fury of these devastating storms. Aruba may be one of the most famous honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean—for good reason. With pristine beaches, perfect temperatures, and plenty of nightlife entertainment options and romantic resorts, you're sure to enjoy your romantic getaway to Aruba in July or August.

Barbados is the number one honeymoon destination for couples from Great Britain, and more and more Americans are discovering the joy of this Caribbean island each year. The parish of Christ Church in the south offers plenty of opportunities to socialize and party while the northern shores offer secluded resorts and private accommodations. The Sandals Barbados is one of the newer romantic retreats on the island while the Crane Hotel has continuously welcomed couples to its island paradise on the eastern shore since 1887.

Also outside the hurricane zone, Curaçao has much more to offer than just romantic (and gorgeous) beaches—it has a rich cultural history and one of the most dazzling capital cities in the Caribbean, Willemstad. Here, you can dine at the hilltop Fort Nassau, go snorkeling or scuba diving off the coast, or take in the sights, sounds, and tastes of the historic harbor neighborhood of the Punda Waterfront. Elsewhere on the island, there are plenty of romantic resorts and private retreats.

Although flying to the French Polynesian island of Tahiti may take over 24 hours with layovers and in-air flight time, it's well worth the long wait to enjoy one of the most romantic destinations in the world. Located in the South Pacific Ocean, the green-blue, see-to-the-bottom-clear waters, pristine beaches, and truly one-of-a-kind accommodations make Tahiti one of the most memorable destinations on the map.

No matter what time you visit Hawaii, its location near the equator keeps the temperature nearly perfect year-round; the only thing you really have to worry about on the island are monsoons and volcanoes, both of which aren't typically active in July and August. Hawaii is also the number one destination for American honeymoons, so there's no shortage of luxury resorts, private retreats, and romantic restaurants to explore and discover on your trip to this American state—plus you don't need a passport or travel visa to visit.

Due to its location near the north pole, Iceland is typically colder year-round than elsewhere on this list, and while there are plenty of things to do in this large island country, one of the most romantic destinations here is the Blue Lagoon, one of the 25 natural wonders of the world. This geothermal spa, where water is a constant 104 degrees (and the air temperature is around 60 in summer) allows visitors to relax and enjoy the extraordinary environment. Couples can even book overnight stays for an all-access pampering unlike anywhere else in the world.

If you're a couple who loves adventure, July and August make for the perfect opportunity to escape the heat by traveling to the Southern Hemisphere. South Africa experiences temperate weather during July and August and is teeming with wildlife in the bush at this time of year. Couples can combine a safari trip with a city experience in Cape Town as well as a visit to South Africa's lush Wine Country, as close as a 45 minute drive from the city.

Romantic Cruises for Couples

No matter what time of year you're planning your romantic getaway, you can guarantee there will be at least one cruise ship sailing somewhere wonderful in the world. The best bargains, though, are on short cruises to on big ships out of Florida because there is so much domestic competition for passengers, especially during the late summer. However, the best chance to steer clear of families with kids is to choose a river cruise or a transatlantic cruise on a big ocean liner with limited facilities for children.

Off-Season Ski Resorts in the Americas

Although the snow and skiers are long gone by the time July and August roll around each year, there are still plenty of reasons to visit off-season ski resorts in the United States and Canada. Ski resorts are actually particularly welcoming in the summer as many of these destinations offer discounts and package deals no available during the busy winter months.

If you pick a lively town like  Park City, Utah , and treat yourself to an ultra-luxe mountain aerie while enjoying off-season prices, you're sure to find that the less-crowded resorts offer a truly decadent romantic getaway.

State Fairs in the Northern U.S.

Although much of the southern United States is a bit too hot for outdoor dates to really be all that romantic, the northern U.S. is quite nice this time of year—if not a little muggy and warm. New York State and New England all the way up to Maine are simply glorious this time of year, and there are plenty of unique bed and breakfasts and resorts to enjoy from Oregon to Massachusettes.

However, if you're looking for a bit of classic take on a romantic date, check out one of the local or state fairs in these areas. These events offer a unique way to experience local pride and sample local products. Although they're fun for all ages, the best time to go as an adult is later in the day when families clear out and the best entertainment and concerts take place.

From Yulia of That’s What She Had

For me, the perfect couples’ trip in the US is having the opportunity to walk with my beloved around the city hand-in-hand.

Not many American cities give you this opportunity, but Boston does which makes it an ideal American romantic getaway.

Best of all, Boston has a harbor! You can enjoy a dinner of freshly caught lobsters at sunset and then walk by the waterfront.

Does this sound good? Well, here are a few more ideas about how to spend time with your significant other in Boston.

Have a dinner at the Omni Parker House Restaurant where, as the legend suggests, Kennedy proposed to Jackie Bouvier and where the original Boston cream pie was created over a hundred years ago.

2 Days in Boston Itinerary: Fanieul Hall

Couples who share a love of cinema can check out the filming locations of their favorite movies.

For example, did you know that you can sit on a bench in the Boston Public Garden where the characters of Matt Damon and Robin Williams sat in  Good Will Hunting ?

And while you are in the Public Garden, take a ride on a swan boat, one of Boston’s iconic attractions.

You can also stop by the bar where Will Hunting and his friends had a beer after work in the same movie.

Other romantic things to do in Boston include visiting the beautiful Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, strolling along the Harborwalk, and even enjoying a sunset cruise overlooking the city .

Consider heading to a show in the theatre district, or heading to the North End to enjoy Italian-American food and beautiful architecture.

Where to Stay in Boston

  • Found Hotel Boston Common: This boutique hotel in the Theatre District is perfect for exploring Boston. Rooms are bright and comfortable, and there is access to public transport a short walk from the hotel.
  • Revere Hotel Boston Common: Also in the Theatre District and close to Boston Common is this stylish hotel with a stunning rooftop terrace and bar, perfect for afternoon drinks. Rooms are spacious and have a coffee machine for those of you who need coffee the moment you wake up.

Saranac Lake

From Danila of Travelling Dany

Saranac Lake is a cute city nestled among 46 High Peaks, Upstate New York.

If you are planning a road trip to the Adirondacks National Park , you can reach it by driving for about two hours from the Big Apple.

The difference between NYC and the amazing forest is striking: it feels unreal that you’re still driving in New York State!

A massive clock tower welcomes visitors to this quaint little town, full of flowers and smiling faces.

Its main street is the perfect spot where you can walk hand in hand at night, with your significant other, crossing wooden bridges, and admiring historical buildings.

Saranac Lake, one of the most beautiful – and less touristy – towns in the Adirondacks, is absolutely breathtaking in the fall: foliage in this area lasts longer than in any other part of the States!

If your beloved one is a hiking addict, you definitely should try one of the trails starting from Saranac Lake.

Saranac Lake, Adriondacks New York in the fall, with houses nestled against the lake shore, taken from across the water. Upstate NY in the fall in is one of the most romantic USA trips to take!

The difficulty goes from easy to moderately hard and the forests are full of deer and squirrels!

The perfect spot to spend a romantic vacation in Saranac Lake is the Ampersand Bay Resort.

Wooden cabins on the shores of Lower Saranac Lake become romantic love nests where you can spend your evenings enjoying the jacuzzi or drinking hot cocoa next to the fireplace.

Because Saranac Lake is one of those lovely towns where everyone knows each other, and the food scene reminds you of the old times, you won’t have any problem at all in finding the best foodie spots.

One of my favorite breakfast places in town is Origin Coffee: they bake homemade muffins every morning!

The perfect restaurant for dinner is Blue Moon Café , owned by an Italian-American couple who loves to cook and chat with their guests.

Be prepared to be treated with the best food: from the large servings alone you can definitely tell their Italian heritage!

Where to Stay in Saranac Lake

  • Hotel Saranac: This historic hotel was built in 1927 and has a classic stately home feel. There is a great bar and restaurant and most rooms have views of the lake
  • Franklin Manor: Another historic building perfect for your trip to Saranac Lake. Rooms are huge and feel like a luxury bedroom you may dream of at home. It is also privately owned with that personal touch.

No, not  Portland, Oregon –the lighthouse-and-lobster-loving Portland, Maine!

Known for its charming Portland Head Light, its warehouse-district-turned-trendy-neighborhood of Old Port, and many, many breweries, Portland is an absolute blast to visit.

If you and your partner are looking for a city vacation that also offers beautiful nature and a very relaxed, laid-back vibe, Portland is a fantastic choice.

While you’re there, be sure to take a quick ferry over to nearby Peaks Island for a day, tour the beautiful Victoria Mansion, and enjoy (at least) one afternoon on a sailboat.

Of course, no trip to Portland is complete without snapping photos at the Portland Head Light, but Bug Light deserves a quick look, too!

Portland is also less than an hour by car from famous Kennebunkport–so if you want to mix a famous small town into this romantic getaway in the USA, you absolutely can.

Where to Stay in Portland

  • Portland Regency Hotel & Spa : This historic hotel offers a hot tub, steam room, full-service spa, and other luxurious amenities that will truly make your vacation to Portland one to remember!
  • Portland Harbor Hotel: Located on Portland Waterfront is this luxury and stylish hotel. With beautifully designed rooms and a great restaurant, you are also well located to explore more of Portland.

New York City

From James of Travel Collecting

As one of the most famous and electric cities in the world, there’s no doubt that an action-packed weekend in NYC (or even a full honeymoon trip–both are popular) makes for an excellent romantic trip in the US for couples of all kinds.

Whether you and your partner are museum hoppers, foodies, park lovers, viewpoint seekers, or all of the above, New York City has plenty to offer!

For something memorable, start the day by sharing one of the enormous pastry baskets when you have breakfast at the famous Balthazar in SoHo .

This beautiful restaurant with enormous antique mirrors, red leather banquettes, and wait staff in long white aprons will transport you to another century.

kate storm spinning in front of manhattan bridge in brooklyn, a must see duing 4 days in nyc

For something uniquely New York, wander hand in hand through Central Park, then in summer rent a boat at the Loeb Boathouse and row around the lake before enjoying a romantic lunch at the lakeside restaurant.

In winter, go ice-skating at Wollman’s Rink before having lunch at the nearby Palm Court restaurant at the famous Plaza Hotel.

Hop over to the  Metropolitan Museum of Art for a coffee in their café overlooking the American wing or on the rooftop terrace overlooking Central Park in summer

If you’re lucky enough to have your trip for 2 overlap with New York at Christmas , don’t miss the chance to stroll hand-in-hand past the city’s legendary decor.

Of course, no romantic getaway in NYC is complete without admiring the skyline from above at a classic spot like the Empire State Building or Top of the Rock , or from a trendy angle like what you’ll find at Summit One Vanderbilt !

rowboats on central park lake on a summer day, as seen during a 4 day new york itinerary

If you are downtown, you can rent Citibikes and cycle along the Hudson River then stop for lunch and a glass of wine at  Battery Gardens  restaurant with wonderful views of the harbor sparkling in the sunshine and the Statue of Liberty in the distance.

Don’t miss the opportunity to take in a Broadway show with your partner, either!

Finish a perfect romantic getaway with a cocktail at the Aviary bar on the 35 th  floor of the Mandarin Oriental hotel where the views of midtown are to die for, or at Park in the Meat Packing District for a downtown experience in their covered garden or fireside bar.

Where to Stay in New York

  • The Plaza Hotel : For a memorable place to stay, this is one of the most classic and luxurious hotels in New York. It is located right by Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, and some of NYC’s most popular museums.
  • The Renwick: Offering stylish residential style accommodation, this beautiful hotel is equipped with plenty of amenities and high class comfort. It is also a short walk to the Empire State Building and Bryant Park for exploring.

Tiny, beautiful Nantucket is perfect for couples looking for a small island boasting both an adorable town center and sparkling beaches for their romantic getaway.

Located off the coast of Cape Cod in Massachusetts, Nantucket is a classic summer retreat and one of the  best places to visit in New England .

While you’re there, consider renting bikes to explore the island together, tracking down all three of Nantucket’s beautiful lighthouses, visiting the Whaling Museum, and of course, enjoying a lobster roll or two!

The absolute best time of year to visit Nantucket is during the island’s famous hydrangea season, which typically runs from late June through most of July (though of course, it can vary).

A 4th of July trip to Nantucket, while certainly a splurge, is easily one of the most romantic US getaway ideas!

Plan a photo shoot with the beautiful flowers and idyllic New England architecture to preserve your memories!

Where to Stay in Nantucket

  • Seven Sea Street Inn: This cute quiet hotel in the historic district is a short walk to Harbor Beach and offers bike rentals for exploring the area.
  • Jared Coffin House: A stunning historic hotel filled with antiques and classic details. You will feel you have stepped back in time!

Niagara Falls

Dial it back a few decades, and Niagara Falls was  the  place to take a honeymoon in North America–and while it’s less iconic on the honeymoon scene now, it’s still a wildly romantic place!

While this blog post does cover romantic destinations in the USA specifically, no discussion of couples vacations to Niagara Falls is complete without pointing out that while the portion of Niagara Falls located in the States is lovely, it’s well worth bringing your passport along and crossing the border into Canada as part of your trip!

However, with boat tours, hiking trails, Old Fort Niagara, and more available on the New York side, it’s safe to say that even a strictly American couples trip to Niagara Falls has plenty of romance to offer.

Don’t miss the Cave of the Winds Experience that will take you right up to Bridal Veils Falls while you’re there!

Prepare to get soaked–but that’s an excellent excuse to relax in a hot tub with a glass of wine, great views, and your partner afterward.

Where to Stay in Niagara Falls

  • Stateside – The Butler House: For classic romantic accommodation this is the one to go with in the American side of Niagara Falls. Built in 1910 is the historic craftsman style, this is a cute and cozy hotel for your trip. Location wise you also can’t beat this, just 10 minutes walk from the American Falls and a mile from the International Rainbow Bridge to Canada.
  • Canada – Hilton Fallsview: While not the greatest Hilton experience you might expect, but definitely worth it for the views. Expect the usual Hilton features of a good quality hotel but look over the as-close-as-you-could-get views of Niagara Falls.

Beautiful beaches, a unique culture that’s all its own, fabulous architecture, and–of course–plenty of sunshine: you’ll find all of this and far more by heading all the way south to Miami for your couples’ weekend getaway!

When it comes to beaches, South Beach is often considered one of the best urban beaches on the planet, and we’d have to agree.

Don’t limit yourself just to the beach, though!

South Pointe Pier in Miami Beach, with view of downtown on the far left and South Beach on the right--definitely visit during your 3 days in Miami!

Be sure to explore Miami Beach’s impressive Art Deco architecture, eat your way through Little Havana, admire street art in Wynwood, and check out the views from Biscayne Bay.

For a unique perspective on the city, consider  taking a boat cruise –we were very impressed with how much we enjoyed ours!

For couples who hope to experience some unique nature in south Florida during their trip, consider also planning on a day trip to nearby Everglades National Park.

Or, if you have a few more days (say, an  extra  long weekend trip), you can road trip all the way to Key West, the southernmost point of the USA (more on that option below!).

Where to Stay in Miami

  • The Betsy Hotel : Rooftop pool, marble bathrooms with deep tubs, a stylish cocktail lounge and spacious private balconies, this hotel is a great choice for your romantic trip.
  • Henrosa Hotel: This stylish hotel has amazing suites available with dressing rooms and seating areas, feel like a celebrity with all the luxe add-ons.

New Orleans

From Margie of DQ Family Travel

The ever-unique and dynamic city of New Orleans, where music spills out from every corner and the scent of food lingers in the air 24 hours a day, is absolutely one of the most romantic cities in the USA.

NOLA has such unique architecture that walking through the streets and seeing the French and Spanish influence that certain parts of the French Quarter can feel like you’re in a European city.

Due to that European influence and the Creole culture that developed, the food in New Orleans is one of a kind.

Among the best things to do is walk through the Garden District or the French Quarter and sit down to eat some beignets, crawfish, jambalaya, fried oysters, or a shrimp po’boy.

Unsurprisingly, New Orleans is home to one of the top food scenes in the country.

The arts scene is also thriving in New Orleans as well. Walking through many parts of the city, you can find local painters and crafters selling their work, as well as plenty of beautiful bookstores .

kate storm standing in front of a nola garden district mansion during a romantic 3 days in new orleans la

The many public fountains and squares give the city a charming feel and people-watching can be quite interesting.

Since New Orleans is located at the mouth of the Mississippi River, you can enjoy a peaceful jazz cruise on the river as part of your trip!

At night, the city comes alive with street performers and sidewalk bars to enjoy a cocktail or two. Listening to a jazz band is a great idea while in New Orleans.

There is no shortage of music anywhere you go as restaurants are often playing some type of classic New Orleans jazz.

Overall, New Orleans is a fantastic city to enjoy with a loved one and stroll through the streets, eating, drinking, and enjoying its’ unique charm.

Where to Stay in New Orleans

  • The Ritz-Carlton : This stunning luxury hotel is a perfect splurge close to Bourbon Street and the French Quarter. The onsite spa offers over 100 treatments. Rooms are as stunning as you would expect, with four-poster beds, soft furnishings, and all designer toiletries.
  • Omni Royal Orleans: Located on the most fashionable corner, St. Louis at Royal, the hotel has received the 4-diamond luxury award for the past 27 years. This hotel is the ultimate luxury experience in a classic New Orleans building.

From Allison of Eternal Arrival

While Nashville is a popular option for friends’ trips and girls’ getaways because of the fun nightlife, a Nashville weekend getaway  is also a solid choice for US couples looking for a unique romantic trip.

Music-loving couples will enjoy the abundance of music-themed museums as well as nightlife options.

Stroll hand-in-hand through the Country Music Hall of Fame or visit the Johnny Cash Museum for a unique insight into the artistic genius who gave the world “Walk the Line” and “Ring of Fire.”

While the honky-tonks on Broadway are always a raucous good time, couples would be better suited with a romantic visit to the Grand Ole Opry, a thrice-weekly live concert and radio show.

It’s the longest-running radio broadcast in United States history and being part of it is great fun–be sure to take the tour backstage!

close up of banjos being played

Other romantic things for couples to do include strolling the John Seigenthaler Pedestrian Bridge, which has beautiful views over downtown Nashville.

Couples will also love strolling around Centennial Park with its replica of the Parthenon.

Patient Instagram husbands will endure being dragged to the Gulch, a vibrant district with tons of colorful walls and street art including the famous “Nashville wings.”

Finally, couples can stuff their face with delicious Nashville BBQ – two of my favorite spots are Acme Feed & Seed and Martin’s BBQ.

Whatever you do, though, be careful with Nashville’s famous hot chicken: the resulting stomachaches from trying chicken too far out of your comfort zone are far from romantic!

Where to Stay in Nashville

  • Hutton Hotel: Book into this stylish hotel for your romantic trip, relax on the hotel balcony, or stroll 10 minutes to Music Row.
  • Virgin Hotels: Part of the Virgin Group and with all the luxury details you might expect, with plenty of red and white details. Many rooms have balconies with views of the city.

Without a doubt, Savannah is one of our favorite romantic getaways in the USA.

Dripping Spanish moss, Savannah’s 22 beautiful town squares, stunning antebellum architecture, and an epic food scene all contribute to making Savannah one of the most romantic cities in the USA.

During a weekend in Savannah with your beloved, be sure to stroll through the lovely Forsyth Park and down Jones Street (often called the most beautiful street in the USA!).

At night, give yourselves an excuse to hold each other tight on a ghost tour!

Kate Storm in a black dress walking away from the camera along Jones Steet in Savannah GA, with several American flags hanging from homes on the right side of the photo

Art lovers can consider a visit to the Telfair Museum of Art or shopSCAD, the store run by the students of the well-known Savannah College of Art and Design, or browse the boutiques along Broughton Street.

Of course, no romantic trip to Savannah could be complete without at least one fantastic southern meal– Savannah’s restaurants are legendary in the south.

The Olde Pink House, The Grey, and Elizabeth of 37th are all popular romantic choices for a bit of a splurge, and Alligator Soul is a great option for more adventurous eaters.

For dessert, consider stopping by the famous Leopold’s Ice Cream, which has been a beloved Savannah tradition for nearly 100 years!

If ice cream isn’t your thing, consider a visit to one of Savannah’s charming coffee shops or to City Market instead–among other treats, City Market features candy stores selling pralines, one of the most well-known desserts in Savannah.

Where to Stay in Savannah

  • The Marshall House: For your trip to Savannah you absolutely have to stay in one of the historic houses, this hotel is a perfect choice. Built in 1851 this is a staple part of Savannah’s history, rooms are decadent and cozy, and the hotel offers a nightly wine reception in the library and cocktails in the bar.
  • Hampton Inn & Suites: Another wonderful hotel in Savannah’s historic district, this provides a modern refresh of a classic luxury hotel. Rooms are bright and comfortable, and a fabulous complimentary breakfast is served on the hotel terrace each morning.

Few other places in the country rival Key West for popular romantic getaways in the USA.

Key West is the land of “Southernmost”: Southernmost Highway, Southernmost Brewery, Southernmost Tattoos.

Understandable, as this is the southmost point in the continental United States that you can reach without ever leaving your car!

Key West is located just 90 miles from Havana, Cuba and, despite the touristy reputation, it can be an exotic and romantic destination for couples.

The island has no shortage of exciting history and tourist attractions.

Even though there are often hundreds of other people here, magical things can still happen!

From Michelle at The Wandering Queen

Charleston, South Carolina is one of the most romantic getaways in the USA.

The city is filled with southern charm, great food, colorful historic houses, gardens, parks, and much more, all perfect for exploring with your partner.

As one of the oldest cities in the south, Charleston is packed full of history–though much of it is unsurprisingly quite dark.

Taking a historic walking tour with your significant other is an absolute must.

Learning about the trials and tribulations the city endured over the years is not only educational but makes you appreciate its history even more.

The classic architecture takes you back in time, giving the city so much personality.

The lovely colors and architectural features make for great couples’ pictures–Rainbow Row is one of the most popular photo spots in Charleston , and it’s no surprise why.

Rainbow Row in Charleston USA, a row of colorful houses. These are pink, purple, and green from left to right. Charleston is one of the best weekend trips for couples in USA!

One of the absolute best things to do in Charleston is to eat! The food is unbelievable and your days in Charleston should be food-centric.

Make sure to make reservations in advance if you want a great romantic dinner at well-known restaurants like FIG. Getting into the more popular restaurants can be difficult.

Of course, Charleston’s location near the beach is also a big draw for couples looking for romance: Sullivan’s Island, Folly Beach, and the Isle of Palms are all at your fingertips when visiting Charleston.

In the end, Charleston is a fun, charming city and is the perfect weekend getaway with your significant other.

Battery Park, the first stop on this 3 day charleston itinerary

Of all of the romantic USA weekend trips covered here, Asheville is one of the best options for a couple divided on whether to visit a city or the great outdoors.

Home to an epic craft beer scene, the incredible Biltmore Estate , plenty of street art, and delicious food options, there’s no doubt that Asheville appeals to the city lovers among us.

Its location right next door to plenty of wonderful hikes in the Pisgah National Forest and Great Smoky Mountain National Park, however, makes it a fabulous US weekend destination for couples who are outdoor enthusiasts, as well.

No matter what your interests are, try to make time during your trip to Asheville to drive a small piece of the Blue Ridge Parkway–especially if you’re visiting in the fall and can enjoy the changing colors.

Often considered one of the most beautiful road trips in the United States, it’s a romantic destination not to be missed.

For a beautiful stop on the Blue Ridge Parkway close to Asheville, hike the short trail to Craggy Pinnacle for sweeping 360-degree views of the mountains and an opportunity for some incredible couples photos.

Where to Stay in Asheville

  • Cedar Crest Inn: This pink 1891 mansion house is a perfect place to base yourself in Asheville. Packed with historical details and stunning architecture you can imagine it as a mini Biltmore.

North Carolina Coast

Whether you’re visiting classic Outer Banks beach towns like Duck, Kitty Hawk, and Nags Head, heading a bit further south to the Crystal Coast to visit places like Beaufort and Atlantic Beach , or even heading all the way south to Wilmington, there’s no doubt that the North Carolina Coast offers an incredible chance for romance.

Lined with small beach towns, historic lighthouses, excellent seafood, and even unique attractions like wild horses that live on deserted barrier islands, the North Carolina Coast is an unbeatable destination for a southern USA romantic getaway.

… And you can enjoy all that the NC coast has to offer without the prices of popular places further south in Florida or further north in New England.

While you’re there, consider driving at least part of the stunning Outer Banks Scenic Byway, climbing to the top of a lighthouse or two for an incredible view (we’re partial to Cape Lookout ourselves), enjoying the sunset from a boat, and spending plenty of time with your toes in the sand.

If you start your trip to the North Carolina Coast in Raleigh, you may be able to add other cool stops in Eastern NC as you make your way to the beach!

Consider visiting New Bern for its historic downtown, or Kinston to eat at Vivian Howard’s celebrated Chef and the Farmer restaurant (be sure to make reservations well in advance!) before making your way to the coast.

Where to Stay on the North Carolina Coast

  • Outer Banks Beach Club: Better book fast because this hotel in Kill Devil Hills sells out fast! The resort is set up as residence style apartments for a homey summer vacation with access to indoor and outdoor pools and views of the ocean.

San Francisco

From Jyoti at Story at Every Corner

San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and definitely one of the most romantic getaways in America!

The first thing you’ll notice is San Francisco’s lovely cool weather (just be sure to avoid the June Gloom–the best “summer” month in San Francisco is actually September).

Throughout much of the year, the air is so crisp it fills up the heart with love and happiness.

There is so much to love about San Francisco, it’s a challenge to list a few of the most romantic aspects of the city.

Of course, most couples on a romantic getaway will want to start with San Francisco’s most famous landmark: enjoy the many vantage points and views of the world’s most recognizable bridge, each offering its unique perspective.

Painted ladies of San Francisco at sunset with skyline in the background, one of the best places to visit when spending 3 days in San Francisco CA

For example, walk on the Golden Gate Bridge, picnic on Chrissy Field under the bridge, hike in Lands End state park, cruise on the Bay, walk around Treasure Island, or take a Segway Ride for many views of the bridge.

Not too far from the Golden Gate Bridge is the beautiful Palace of Fine Arts.

It’s so calming to walk and admire the views or lie on the grassy hills, watch the swans, and have a picnic.

In the midst of the busy city of San Francisco are the enormous Golden Gate Park and its many attractions such as the Japanese Tea Garden, San Francisco Botanical Garden, Conservatory of Flowers, San Francisco Academy of Sciences, de Young Museum, Lloyd Lake, the Dutch Windmill and the beach on the Pacific Ocean.

Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco CA shot from above on a clear day

One could spend hours relaxing at any of these beautiful sites, outdoors or indoors.

For the art lover in everyone, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is a great way to spend a half or a full day enjoying modern artistic creations, and for a different kind of art appreciation, consider a memorable performance at the San Francisco Symphony.

Last but not least, no romantic getaway to San Francisco could be complete without talking about its food.

San Francisco has amazing restaurants in every cuisine. Even for vegans, there are several incredible restaurants and chefs that make magic happen.

Some favorites include the Shizen Japanese, Herbivore, Hakkasan, Aster, Slanted Door, and Ghirardelli Square for dessert.

Of course, its namesake lake is the most beautiful lake we have ever seen with clear clean waters. It is known to be the largest alpine lake in North America.

Lake Tahoe is divided into two parts, north and south, and both sections of Lake Tahoe are equally mesmerizing.

With an abundance of rivers, lakes, waterfalls, and mountains plus dozens of quaint towns and hundreds of wineries, Oregon is a state made for romance.

However, the most popular destination for a US romantic getaway in the state has to be the beautiful Oregon Coast .

Oregon has 363 miles of stunning coastline to explore full of fabulous beaches, scenic harbors, iconic lighthouses, pristine parks, and soaring sand dunes.

There are also dozens of charming seaside towns offering a romantic home base from which to explore.

Historic Astoria is the closest coastal town to Portland and offers plenty to do including an old waterfront trolley, a thriving arts community, and lots of great restaurants and craft breweries.

If you and your honey are looking for a romantic destination in America, look no further than Las Vegas, NV.

The area is, of course, known for gambling and being “Sin City” but it is also a very romantic place to visit.

It is the only city in the world where you can combine the romance of Rome, Paris, Venice, and more into one (quirky) locale.

Perhaps the most romantic activity in the city is a private gondola ride in the Venetian/Palazzo hotel on the strip.

You and your boo can take a ride for two down the hotel’s canal while being beautifully serenaded by your gondolier.

If you are in the mood for relaxation, you can book a couples massage in the spa of any of the large hotels on the strip.

You can also spring for an in-room massage if you’d like something more private.

If skyline views are more your thing, you can get a killer view of the city from the High Roller at the Linq while sipping cocktails in a semi-private cabin.

You and your partner can also scale the Eiffel Tower at the Paris Hotel and see the twinkling lights of the city from their observation deck.

Romantic dinners are also on the menu, too!

Grab dinner at the Paris hotel on the 11th floor with jaw-dropping views of the strip, or venture a little off the strip to Top of the World restaurant in the Stratosphere Hotel to get a bird’s eye view of the entire city.

The Barrymore near the Convention Center, Twist in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, or any of the restaurants in Wynn Hotel’s adult-only restaurants are also sure to spark a mood.

If the feeling of love overwhelms you during your trip, Las Vegas has several top-notch wedding venues that can do everything from a quickie wedding with Elvis (witness provided) to a full wedding complete with an audience and small orchestra.

No worries if you didn’t pack a dress and tux–the city of romance can take care of that too!

… And no worries if you’re already married, either: a spontaneous vow renewal with fun photos can make for quite the memorable souvenir!

The beautiful city of Chicago is the perfect city for any couple looking for a romantic getaway in the USA.

There are plenty of fun things for couples to do together both outdoors and indoors, during the day or at night, whether on a budget or looking to splurge.

Couples that enjoy being outdoors can spend some time in one of Chicago’s many parks including Millennium Park, which is home to Cloud Gate, the famous sculpture also known as The Bean.

For a romantic stroll, couples can walk along the Chicago Riverwalk and/or lakefront to enjoy the beautiful city and water views.

With miles of beaches along the lake, couples can even take a long walk on the beach.

For those that enjoy being on the water, you can go sailing, join one of the many cruises on Lake Michigan or take an architecture river cruise (the best way to enjoy the impressive architecture and city skyline).

For those interested in more cultural activities, Chicago is home to many excellent and well-known museums and cultural institutions.

For a romantic night on the town, couples can watch a play or comedy show, listen to music at a jazz club or have dinner at one of Chicago’s many restaurants serving every type of cuisine.

One of the most romantic thing to do in Chicago is to have dinner or drinks at one of the many outdoor patios and rooftops while enjoying panoramic views of the beautiful skyline.

If you’re looking for a romantic getaway in the United States, look no further than Honolulu, the capital of the island of Oahu and also the entire state of Hawaii.

It is not only the commercial center of the island, but is also the home of the world-famous Waikiki Beach.

Every evening tourists make a pilgrimage to this beach to watch the orange-pink sunset–at least the ones who aren’t already there from soaking up the sun all day.

If you are up for some romance, come here for sunset or book yourself a table at one of the nice hotels that are located right on the beach.

Imagine the perfect Hawai’i sunset and put some bubbles to it – sounds just perfect, right?

Waikiki Beach shot from above, with palm trees in the foreground and oceans in the background. Waikiki Beach is one of the best beaches in the USA

Waikiki has great waves for beginner surfers and is the perfect spot to try out a new skill with your beloved.

During the day it’s time to seek out viewpoints: drive up the serpentines along the Tantalus Highway to get a full picture of O’ahu and bring yourself some typical Hawaiian poke bowl which you can best get at Keeaumoku Seafood.

This might just be the best lunch spot you ever visited!

Also, once in Honolulu, you can go on a little day trip to experience the beautiful North Shore, which is dotted with surf spots and home to some of the most amazing waves in the world.

Make sure to get to the sleepy village of Haleiwa where you can celebrate your romantic getaway with some bubbles and a nice lunch at Haleiwa Joe’s or get yourself some takeaway and watch the surfers hit the waves at Waimea Bay before you secure yourself a sunset spot at the beach.

A classic couples’ travel destination for generations, you can’t beat Honolulu when looking for the most romantic getaways in the USA!

Where to Stay in Honolulu

  • Halepuna Waikiki: Stay in this luxury boutique hotel which features works of several Hawaiian artists in partnership with The Honolulu Museum of Art public art program. Soak in the infinity pool overlooking the ocean or relax on your hotel balcony.
  • White Sands Hotel: Stay on the beach at this stunning hotel. Enjoy sipping on cocktails in swing chairs at the circular bamboo bar.

About Kate Storm

Image of the author, Kate Storm

In May 2016, I left my suburban life in the USA and became a full-time traveler. Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA.

15 thoughts on “31 of the Most Romantic Getaways in the USA (Couples’ Vacation Ideas!)”

Hi Kate, this is an amazing collection of getaways. I’ll pin it and refer to it for local getaways with friends and girl friends too. Thanks for compiling it and include me.

Anytime, Jyoti!

Love this list! However, as a local I have to point out that the market in Seattle is called pike place market, not pike street market. Small difference I know but it matters with all the history about this amazing market.

Thanks so much, Shannon! Made that update. 🙂

Super surprised to not see San Antonio on this list!

These are some great places listed!

We do love San Antonio (we actually lived there for a couple of years!). The food there is just incredible.

Yeah there’s nothing mentioned about Texas but you can talk about how great Chicago is visit the Hill Country and you will find out

Funny you should mention the Hill Country, because we are living in it right now! We actually run a whole second travel blog all about Texas, you can find us at https://www.lonestartravelguide.com for that. 🙂 I hadn’t noticed we had a lack of Texas in this post, I’ll have to add some when we update it later this year.

Seattle has Gasworks park, not Glasworks. Just in case someone is looking for it.

Thanks! Fixed. 🙂

Also, Fremont, not Freemont. I lived in Seattle and environs for 52 years and moved to Idaho to retire and be closer than 800 miles away to Grand Teton and Yellowstone. I am surprised you didn’t also mention Jackson, Wyoming as a place to get away to! It’s turned into quite the foodie place, too. It’s also called “Jackson Hole” by many people.

If we covered everywhere romantic in one post, we’d have a post hundreds of destinations long! We do love Jackson Hole, though–it’s listed on our USA honeymoon ideas post. 🙂

Great information for all, but I thought Charlotte,NC could have been another place in NC that I have found to be very romantic.

I found this to be very helpful…I took tons of notes!!!

Thank you 😊

Thanks, Sarah! Hope you have a great time exploring the country!

No matter why you chose August as your honeymoon month, you picked a great one. From lively local festivals to late sunsets, the end of summer is a magical time for a vacation.

But where should you go? August honeymoons are always fun, from a safari honeymoon in Tanzania to a laid-back week at the beach in Portugal .

Ready to pack your bags? Here’s everything you need to know about the best places to honeymoon in August.

August Honeymoon Destinations

Oahu, hawaii, usa .

Best For: Action-Packed Honeymoon

Oahu

Believe it or not, a Hawaii honeymoon is perfect in the summer. Our pick for the best island in August? Oahu.

There is so much to do, from spending time at the luxury hotels and diverse restaurants in the capital city of Honolulu to exploring the islands’ jungles and beaches.

Some of our favorite activities include hiking the 1,000 steps at Koko Crater Railway Trailhead, attending a luau on the beach at Paradise Cove , and learning about WWII history at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial . Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum is also a must to learn about indigenous culture on the island.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 7-10 Days Suggested Stay: The Kahala Hotel and Resort

Gombe National Park, Tanzania

Best For: Jungle Hikes

Gombe

If you’re keen on a honeymoon full of wildlife and adventure, then Tanzania is a wonderful choice. We love the idea of a safari in the Serengeti, but August is the perfect time to plan a trip to Gombe National Park.

The beautiful mountains and rainforests covering over 14 square miles of the Tanzania/Congo border are your best chance of seeing chimpanzees in the wild. Take a guided trek in August when the highs are around 80°F, and it rarely rains.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 7-10 Days Suggested Stay: Mbali Mbali Gombe Lodge

Shikoku, Japan

Best For: History and Culture

Shikoku

If you want to immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture, it’s hard to find a better option than Shikoku. The small island of Shikoku offers visitors a chance to experience Japanese food, architecture, and arts dating back centuries.

Shikoku is known for its 88 temples that are part of the Buddhist pilgrimage route. Seeing the beautiful pagodas, gardens, and statues at sites like Konsen-ji (金泉寺) is a must.

But an August honeymoon in Shikoku is special because you can attend the Awa Odori Festival . The event has taken place for 400 years, and over 1 million people attend to experience traditional song and dance honoring the dead.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 7-10 Days Suggested Stay: AoAwo Naruto Resort

Grenada

Best For: All-Inclusive Honeymoon

Grenada

Couples looking for a quiet, adults-only Caribbean honeymoon will be happy to learn that Grenada is the perfect August pick.

While much of the Caribbean Islands suffer through hurricane season, Grenada typically enjoys beautiful weather with sunny days and warm temperatures on land and in the sea.

Plan a Sandals honeymoon where you’ll have direct access to the beautiful Pink Gin Beach. Amenities include scuba lessons, ocean kayaking, and optional butler service at this 5-star resort in paradise.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 7 Days Suggested Stay: Sandals Grenada All-Inclusive

Serifos, Greece

Best For: Secluded Romance

Serifos

The Cyclades Islands are among the most gorgeous coastal locations in Europe and the perfect place for a honeymoon. We love Santorini and Mykonos, but if you want a quieter honeymoon, head to Serifos.

You can reach the small island from Athens in 3 hours. What awaits are some of the most idyllic beaches in Greece .

Ganema Beach is a perfect example of the blue-green waters and scenic shoreline that make Serifos the best-kept secret in the Cyclades.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 3-5 Days Suggested Stay:  NŌSTOS Serifos

Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Best For: Rainforests and Beaches

Tamarindo

Costa Rica is a bucket list destination for many couples. While summer is typically rainy around the island, August is a perfect month to choose Tamarindo.

Because it’s on the island’s northwest side along the Pacific, August brings warm temperatures and drier weather than other parts of the country.

You’ll have plenty of sunshine at Playa Conchal, one of the best beaches in the area.

Make time to explore Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve , where the rainy afternoons add to the mystique of walking across the hanging bridges.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 7-10 Days Suggested Stay: The Westin Reserva Conchal

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Best For: Honeymoon in a Magical Village

San Miguel de Allende

Planning a Mexico honeymoon in the summer is challenging. It’s hot, humid, and often rainy along the coasts.

But for couples who want to experience incredible architecture, cuisine, and romance, the Pueblo Magico of San Miguel de Allende is a perfect choice. The 16th-century colonial town boasts some of Central Mexico’s best restaurants and architecture to enjoy on your honeymoon..

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 5 Days Suggested Stay: Rosewood San Miguel de Allende

Ottawa, Canada

Best For: A minimoon

Ottawa

Ottawa, Canada might not be at the top of every couple’s bucket list, but we promise you it offers everything you want out of a honeymoon.

The laid-back city has a ton to do, with some of Canada’s best museums, parks, and restaurants. August is a beautiful month to visit, walk around the city, and take in the sights near Parliament Hill and the nearly 200-year-old outdoor marketplace ByWard Market.

Temperatures average around 78°F for highs, but if it gets too hot, you can take a dip into the Ottawa River at a local beach or visit the 3-floors of art at the stunning National Gallery of Canada .

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 5 Days Suggested Stay: Fairmont Ottawa

Iguaçu Falls, Brazil

Best For: Chasing Waterfalls

Iguazu Falls

Planning a Brazil honeymoon? We’re super jealous. If you’re heading to South America in the winter (yes, it’s winter in August), we think Iguazu Falls on the border of Argentina is the perfect place to honeymoon.

Stay in Foz de Iguaçu on the Brazil side of the park. You can see 80% of the 275 waterfalls from Brazil, so a hike around the 1-mile section of the park offers the best views.

Take a guided walk where you’ll see the 150-metre (490-foot) Devil’s Throat to see the most epic set of falls.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 5 Days Suggested Stay: Hotel das Cataratas

Busan, South Korea

Best For: Honeymoon Views

Busan

Looking for the most scenic honeymoon in Asia ? The ultra-modern city of Busan is the perfect place to snap selfies together over the East Sea.

August is a beautiful month to visit, with temperatures often between 75°F to 85°F. Beaches like Gwangalli Beach are lovely, and you can even rent a stand-up paddleboard.

But our favorite reason for a South Korean honeymoon in Busan is the great photo ops. Whether you’re staring out from 100 floors up at BUSAN X or flying over Busan Bay on the Busan Air Cruise, you’re in for a treat.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 3-5 Days Suggested Stay: Grand Josun Busan

Dorset, England

Best For: Ancient Coastline and Castles

Dorset

Trying to plan the perfect UK honeymoon ? We think Dorset is one of the best locations you can add to a summer holiday in England.

The stretch of coastline called the Jurassic Coast is perfect for adventurous couples who want to hunt for fossils along the stunning coastline of southern England. Durdle Door offers the honeymoon photo you’ve dreamed of, with a 200-foot natural limestone arch peering into the English Channel.

You can also hike around Corfe Castle, an 11th-century fortress that was built for William I the Conqueror.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 5 Days Suggested Stay: Summer Lodge Country House Hotel

Acadia National Park, Maine, USA

Best For: National Park Honeymoon

Acadia National Park

While many of our favorite USA national parks are sweltering hot, one of the most beautiful is in its prime. Acadia National Park rarely tops 75°F, even in August. This makes hiking around the mysterious islands, rock formations, and waterfalls extra incredible.

Do yourself a favor and hike the 4.2-mile Cadillac North Ridge Trail, where you’ll look out at the Atlantic Ocean and national park from the tallest peak in Acadia. After a long day’s hike, see why Maine lobster is famous worldwide at the Maine Lobster Festival in early August at nearby Rockland.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 5-7 Days  Suggested Stay: Bar Harbor Grand Hotel

Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Best For: Safari Honeymoon

Amboseli

If you’re planning a safari honeymoon , we have great news for you. Kenya is one of the best places to go on a honeymoon in August. We love Masai Mara Reserve (it’s one of our favorite June honeymoons ), but Amboseli National Park flies under the radar of many international travelers.

The luxe tents at Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli are the perfect landing spot after you spend a full day taking in the wildlife and scenery in the national park. You’ll see elephants, cheetahs, and lions, with a jaw-dropping view of Mount Kilimanjaro framing the scene.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 5-7 Days Suggested Stay: Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli

Lagoa, Portugal

Best For: Beach Honeymoon

Lagoa Portugal

When we think of the best beach vacations, we can’t help but dream up a honeymoon in Portugal . August is a great time to take advantage of the hot weather and warm water along the coastline in the Algarve.

Lagoa is a charming little town near some of our favorite beaches. Looking for the best? Praia da Marinha is a clear winner with its sandy shores and vibrant reefs.

You can also kayak to the Benagil Sea Cave, a beautiful cave with a hole etched into its top from thousands of years at sea.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 7 – 10 Days Suggested Stay: Lagoa Hotel

Outer Banks, North Carolina, USA

Best For: Wedding and Honeymoon Combo

Outer Banks

Whether the TV show of the same name is a guilty pleasure or not, you’ve probably heard of the Outer Banks in recent years. The stretch of barrier islands is home to some of the best beaches, lighthouses, and boutique hotels in North Carolina.

Pack your swimsuit because the beaches at Nags Head are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and even windsurfing.

Though hurricane season is in effect, that doesn’t stop tourists from taking advantage of the warmest temperatures in August, so book early. We love the outer banks as a destination wedding or elopement idea , too.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 3-5 Days Suggested Stay: Beachwoods Resort

Lake Garda, Italy

Best For: Lakeside Honeymoon

Lake Garda

You’ll want to book in advance (Lake Garda is a very popular European break), but Lake Garda is magical in the summertime. August brings temperatures between 65°F and 85°F to Italy’s largest lake.

When you’re not splashing around at the beaches or taking in the views of the nearby Dolomites, visit the Roman ruins at the Archaeological site of Grotte di Catullo or head into to a restaurant like La Foresta Ristorante in Sirmione for a memorable meal.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 7-10 Days Suggested Stay: Lefay Resort & Spa Lago Di Garda

Alaska, USA

Best For: Honeymoon Cruise

Alaska

August is the perfect month to visit Alaska when the temperatures are near the warmest, and you can enjoy 18 hours of daylight.

Planning a honeymoon cruise is the perfect way to see the stunning wildlife and nature along the northern shores.

This 10-day cruise from San Francisco brings you to the rainforests and glaciers of Juneau, gold rush towns like Skagway, and sails through stunning fjords of the Tracy Arm.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 10 days Suggested Stay: Carnival Cruise Line

De Hoop Nature Reserve, South Africa

Best For: Honeymoon Whale-Watching

Sunset at De Hoop

August is a perfect month to plan an Africa honeymoon . Want a low-key tip on the best honeymoon destination you haven’t heard of? Head to De Hoop Nature Reserve , located on the southern tip of the continent.

This is a great option for travellers who want to plan a South Africa honeymoon in an area with pristine nature and wildlife.

August is a best time to see southern right whales migrating past the 43 miles of coastline. Set up on a sand dune in Koppie Allen with a picnic lunch and bottle of wine from the nearby Cape Winelands for the best views.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 10 Days Suggested Stay: Morukuru Family De Hoop

Whakapapa, New Zealand

Best For: Honeymoon Ski Trip

Whakapapa

What’s the best place to visit in August for a honeymoon? If you’re itching to hit the slopes, then Whakapapa is an easy choice.

Cruise down any of the nearly 70 ski runs over 1,300 acres on Mount Ruapehu. Not to worry if it’s your first time; August brings great conditions, and there are plenty of mellow runs.

You can fly in and out of Auckland, allowing you to experience the culture and cuisine of New Zealand’s largest city.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 5-7 Days Suggested Stay: Skotel Alpine Resort

Motu Tautau, French Polynesia

Best For: Overwater Bungalows

Motu Tatau

When we think of honeymoon hotels, overwater bungalows are among the first images we dream up. Le Taha’a by Pearl Resorts in Motu Tautau is your dream accommodation in French Polynesia.

The luxury resort features dinners on the beach, room service delivered by canoe, and adventures on land and at sea.

The small island is perfect in August, with very little rain and high temperatures over 80°F. This makes it perfect for snorkeling at places like Jardin Du Corail – Coral garden, where you can see beautiful tropical fish along the coral reef.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 10 Days Suggested Stay: Le Taha’a by Pearl Resorts

Saskatchewan, Canada

Best For: Nature and Stargazing

Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan is one of the best August honeymoon destinations for couples who want to see wilderness in Canada.

August brings warm temperatures and longer nights, so you can take advantage of stargazing in places like Grasslands National Park (you might even luck out and see the Northern Lights).

Be sure to check out Prince Albert National Park just north of the vibrant city of Saskatoon, where you can hike the lakes and forests along the nearly 1,500 square mile park.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 10-14 Days Suggested Stay: Delta Hotels by Marriott Bessborough

Brussels, Belgium

Best For: Honeymoon City Break

Brussels

Looking for a unique honeymoon in Europe ? Head to Brussels to enjoy a minimoon in the charming Belgian city.

Whether you’re admiring surrealist paintings at the Magritte Museum or finding the best place to try a local beer (Moeder Lambic Fontainas), Brussels is a perfect choice for an urban honeymoon.

For a romantic dinner, visit Les Brigittines, where you can enjoy traditional Belgian cuisine in a romantic setting.

We love the idea of hitting up Brussels in August when the city streets and historic Grand-Place are full of local events and live music.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 3 Days Suggested Stay: Juliana Hotel Brussels

Practical Tips for Planning Your August Honeymoon

Hanauma Bay on Oahu, Hawaii

Don’t Wait to Plan

August honeymoon destinations fill up fast with tourists of all ages. You’re contending with other couples who just tied the knot, families on holiday, and locals who want to enjoy a summer break.

We’re not saying not to plan an August honeymoon (quite the contrary), but do yourself a favor and plan as far in advance as possible.

Look for Adults-Only Resorts

If you want a chilled-out vibe for your honeymoon, narrow in on Sandals honeymoon hotels or other adults-only hotels. You won’t compete against families on school break and might be surprised by the deals you find.

Choose Destinations With Shorter Summers

We love August honeymoons because many of our favorite destinations experience their warmest weather. If you want to plan a week in Canada or Alaska, you won’t find better weather than August.

Parlay Your Honeymoon into September

September honeymoons are another great choice, and you can save a lot of money if you take your August honeymoon later in the month.

You’ll need to consider Labor Day traffic in the USA , but many destinations around the world become much cheaper at the August/September turn.

Here are the 20 best places to visit in August…

1. off-the-beaten-track croatia.

Sibenik, Croatia (Shutterstock)

Sibenik, Croatia (Shutterstock)

Croatia's hottest (and driest) month is August - with temps climbing as high as 28°C - so of course the likes of Dubrovnik, Split, Hvar and other classic destinations will be packed with visitors making the most of the sun.

If you want to enjoy the sparkling weather in Croatia without the crowds, head to the Mamma Mia island of  Vis . Or for a city vibe, discover all of the amazing things to do in Sibenik , or Rovinj . But hurry, these gems are starting to be discovered.

Alternatively, why not skip Plitvice and Krka and head to one of Croatia's six lesser-visited national parks ? Kornati may be tricky to visit, but it is perfect for true explorers. Paklenica National Park is another gem, ideal for hikers unafraid of a hot, hot hike.

2. Matera, Italy

Matera, Italy (Shutterstock)

Matera, Italy (Shutterstock)

Matera  is one of Basilicata's biggest draws and was named one of two 2019 European Capitals of Culture. A few days is the perfect amount of time to delve deeper into how Matera turned its reputation around from 'Italy's shame' to 'iconic cultural hot spot'.

With highs of  29°C in August, summer is the ideal time to explore its fascinating cave districts in the sun, enjoy the natural beauty of Polino National Park, Italy's largest, and sample the region's authentic cuisine. For a longer trip, rent a car and head towards Pompeii, Sorrento, or in the opposite direction to coastal Bari.

3. Medellin, Colombia

Medellin, Colombia (Shutterstock)

Medellin, Colombia (Shutterstock)

August in Colombia, weather-wise, is a bit hit and miss. Whether you'll get sun or showers really depends on which region you're visiting, whether you're after a wildlife adventure in the Amazon or some time in the city.

One thing Medellin has in August that makes up for its – at times – overcast appearance? The spectacular 10-day celebration of nature, known as  Feria de Flores   (Festivals of the Flowers).

Every August, the city blooms with the bright colours of flowers, paraded down the streets. Hundreds of concerts, crafts sessions and floral parades take to the streets and fill the city's best venues. It's a must for any nature lover's travel wish list.

4. Off-the-beaten-track Greek island hopping

Ithaca, one of our off-the-beaten-track Greek Island picks (Shutterstock)

Sunseekers won't be surprised to see Greece on our list for August. It's a classic summer holiday destination, whether you've booked with a travel agent, arranged an island-hopping boat tour or you've planned your trip yourself.

As with Croatia, just because it'll be busy doesn't mean you can't enjoy the perks. After all, there's a reason it's so rammed.

Simply take the road (or waterway) less travelled to one of Greece's secret islands, for an unforgettable beachside break with a difference. It'll be incredibly warm, whichever island you choose. Average highs in August are  31°C, so make sure you're prepared.

Tallinn, Estonia (Shutterstock)

Tallinn, Estonia (Shutterstock)

When you think of  Tallinn , you may find the peach-coloured Alexander Nevsky Cathedral springs to mind, surrounded by droplets of crisp white snow.

We don't blame you. Though freezing, Estonia and its neighbours Latvia and Lithuania make fine winter breaks. But they shouldn't be overlooked in summer.

Walking through Tallinn's comprehensive Old Town and soaking up the atmosphere in Freedom Square is just as satisfying in the sun. With plenty of steep hills to climb, to get to the best views of the city, it's almost easier without all the ice...

6. guyana & the guianas.

The rainforest of French Guiana (Shutterstock)

South America's smallest wonders Guyana , French Guiana and Suriname are prime for visitors at the end of August. It's the perfect time to witness  the breathtaking Kaieteur Falls in Guyana, follow in Papillon's footsteps in French Guiana, and sample Suriname's tasty, speciality rums.

Firstly, the weather's always warm, but it's dry season on the Guianan coast during August, and   French Guiana tends to be drier and warmer in August – as does Suriname.

All three countries are sandwiched between Venezuela and Brazil, so we'd say you're best off lengthening your trip and visiting all three at once. At least you'll  have the benefit of being as far off the beaten track in South America as possible.

7. mongolia.

Mongolia (Shutterstock)

Mongolia (Shutterstock)

You can't really go wrong in Mongolia at this time of year.  Expect vibrant  steppes  rich in shades of green during August, and just-right temperatures between 20°C and 25°C.

If you head to the mountains, you'll probably find it's slightly colder than everywhere else – arguably better conditions for longer treks, which won't require sweating it out in the heat. Wild camping and cycling are other must-do activities in August – as is heading to the Gobi Desert in the south.

It's also prime time to visit  Lake Khövsgöl in northern Mongolia, near the Russian border. The country's biggest and most beautiful freshwater lake dazzles in the sunlight, and seems to stretch for miles on end.

8. Northern Kyrgyzstan

August lands firmly in the middle of Kyrgyzstan's peak season (May to October), so certain areas will be packed with visitors and locals (here's looking at you, Lake Issyk-Kul).

However, it is a good time to take on the epic hikes that Central Tien Shan (the 'Celestial Mountains' in Chinese) has to offer. The highest peak reaches  7,439m, so this is no casual climb. You'll need to be an experienced walker, with a high-level of fitness to make the most of it.

9. Jodhpur, India

Jodhpur, India (Shutterstock)

Jodhpur, India (Shutterstock)

The Blue City of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, is a travel photographer (and Instagram lover's) dream come true. A seemingly endless maze of blue houses, winding alleys, and colourful doors awaits.

Of course, there's much more to it than that. Expect history and art in the renowned, 15th century  Mehrangarh Fort. Admire the ornate decoration of Jaswant Thada. Get out into nature at the impressive Mandore Sculpture Garden, get active with water activities in Lake Kaylana, or picnic at the 12th century Balsamand Lake.

Visit in August particularly for bearable heat (lows of 26 °C and highs of 34 °C ), and the good chance that you'll find some savvy accommodation deals. August is off-season, so though you won't find yourself a lone visitor at any stage, it's likely you may experience a tiny bit less of the typical bustle.

10. Langkawi, Malaysia

The stunning views of Kilim Geoforest Park in Langkawi, Malaysia (Shutterstock)

There's so much to explore in Malaysia, it almost seems unfair to single out the archipelago of Langkawi. Though we suppose, with more time, there's nothing to stop you heading further afield...

But with suitably warm temps (often around 28 °C to 31 °C ), incredibly natural beauty to marvel, cable cars and boat trips galore, and unusual wildlife sightings practically guaranteed –  it's an appealing all-rounder for a sunny getaway without the 'packaged holiday' feel.

The best August destinations for arts & culture

11. edinburgh, scotland.

In August, you won't struggle to find a variety of culture and entertainment festivals in most of the major British and European cities. For the best of the best in summer fun, you need to head to the Scottish capital.

Not only does the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival and its world-class comedy and theatre take over the architecturally-stunning city for the entire month of August, but you'll also find a host of other big name festivals.

Expect arts exhibitions, orchestras and dances at the Edinburgh International Festival, performances at The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Festival – both throughout the month. Towards the end of August, there's a fireworks concert in the city centre, and a mix of multicultural events at the Edinburgh Mela Festival on 31 August.

12. London, England

London, England (Shutterstock)

London, England (Shutterstock)

Every month in London has something for everyone, but August really ups the ante in terms of arts and culture offerings for travellers.

As the name suggests, Greenwich + Docklands International Festival takes over south east London. Performance art takes place indoors and outdoors – expect everything from laser shows and colourful powder fights to stilt walkers and acrobats abseiling down historic buildings.

For classic music fans, BBC Proms has performances running throughout August.

As the month draws to a close, embrace the colourful madness of the iconic Notting Hill Carnival.  The London Craft Beer Festival takes place in the middle of the month at Tobacco Dock, a former warehouse in Wapping.

And for those  foodie travellers, the many street food markets dotted across London will delight in warmer months  – go beyond Borough Market and try visiting Mercato Metropolitano   in Elephant and Castle, or Boxpark in Shorditch.

13. Papua New Guinea

Mount Hagen Cultural Show in Mount Hagen township, Papua New Guinea (Shutterstock)

The city of Mount Hagen in the western province of Papua New Guinea comes alive in the middle of August for days-long performances, feasts and musical festivities hosted by locals during the Mount Hagen Cultural Show.

Drier than June and the coolest month of the year overall, the weather also makes a compelling argument for August as the best time to explore Papua New Guinea's exotic cities and towns.

Of course, Papua New Guinea is a challenging destination and truly off the well-trodden trail. As such, only very experienced travellers should plan to visit, keeping a close eye on the  FCO's Official Travel Advice  before going, too.

14. Guča, Serbia

The Guča Trumpet Festival, known sometimes as  Dragačevski Sabo, is probably a little less well-known than the likes of the Edinburgh Fringe and Notting Hill Carnival.

Nevertheless, the small Serbian town of Guča comes alive for three days in early August for its annual festival, showcasing the best in brass music performances. Hundreds of thousands attend each year.

15. Tunisia

Tunisia's perhaps not the first place you'd think of for a short break with a focus on the arts. However, August provides a few opportunities to see a different side to this North African country.

Established in 1964, the International Festival of Carthage, is held every July and August, offering live music, theatre, opera and even a bit of ballet.

Dougga International Festival is another opportunity to experience live music – this time in the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre, located in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Roman city of Dougga. The festival ends in the first week of August.

The best places to visit for wildlife watching in August

16. discover birds and monkeys in northern ecuador.

Squirrel monkey in the Ecuadorian jungle (Shutterstock)

Squirrel monkey in the Ecuadorian jungle (Shutterstock)

Ecuador is o n South America's west coast. A delightful combination of the Andes, Amazon and the Gal á pagos Islands (just to name a few), it's home to many unique and colourful wildlife species. No surprise then, that it's become one of our top August wildlife trips.

Head to the northern part of the country to give yourself the best chance of seeing the cheeky-looking squirrel monkey, a marmoset or tamarin in the wild.

Birders in Ecuador have the opportunity to see around 1,600 species in total. Undeniably, it's one of the planet's best birdwatching countries. Staying in the north, you'll see rare macaws, the sleek  Andean condor, hummingbirds aplenty and brightly-patterned toucans (again, to name a few). Get your binoculars ready...

17. go polar bear watching in arctic canada.

Polar bears in the Canadian Arctic sunset (Shutterstock)

Polar bears in the Canadian Arctic sunset (Shutterstock)

Summers in the Canadian Arctic are, unsurprisingly, rather short. They're also the best time to get out on the water in a Zodiac and do a bit of polar bear-spotting from your expedition boat.

As we all know, polar bears are best admired from a distance. They're nowhere near as cuddly as as they look. But you may have a chance of getting a little closer than usual, as the Zodiacs can get quite close.

17. whale watching in san juan islands, washington state.

Whale-spotting from San Juan Islands (Shutterstock)

Whale-spotting from San Juan Islands (Shutterstock)

Hop on a Washington State Ferry from  Anacortes to reach four of the 172 San Juan Islands. The weather here is mild most of the year, but the sunniest time to come is during August –  coincidently  also the best time to see killer whales.  This is one of the top places in the world to see the black and white beauties.

San Juan is the most popular islands, with its Whale Museum and plenty of outdoor activities. If you want a more peaceful, wild experience, head to lesser-visited Orcas Island and take on the 6km climb up Mount Constitution. If you're lucky, you can spot Vancouver from the top on a clear day.

19. Watch macaws in Manu National Park, Peru

Macaws in Manu National Park, Peru (Shutterstock)

Macaws in Manu National Park, Peru (Shutterstock)

Visit the south-east region of Peru in August and you'll find yourself stunned by the natural prowess of Manu National Park. Also classed as a Biosphere Reserve, you'll be awed by its lush Amazonian jungle, and the striking Andean Highlands.

It's the perfect place for the avid birdwatcher to see the wow-worthy macaw in its natural habitat. These beautiful parrots – often a mix of red, yellow, blue and green feathers – are best spotted collecting clay at 'clay banks' or 'clay licks' around the park, to feed on later. It's quite an incredible sight.

August is typically the beginning of the season for the most sightings, with September and October also thought to be ideal months.

20. Meet orangutans in Borneo

A young orangutan in Borneo (Dreamstime)

A young orangutan in Borneo (Dreamstime)

Borneo's orangutans basked in the spotlight when Dame Judi Dench visited an orangutan sanctuary during filming of her documentary, Wild Borneo Adventure , for ITV.

August is one of the best times for us non-knighted folk to head to this South-East Asian island paradise to try for a wild sighting.

Danum Valley in Sabah (in the northern part of the island) offers 400 sq km of rainforest reserve for wild orangutans to swing in. Travel along the Kinabatangan River, too, to try and see these magnificent creatures in their homes.

21. see grizzly bears in yellowstone national park.

Grizzly on the move in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA (Shutterstock)

Grizzly on the move in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA (Shutterstock)

Unlike polar bears, we think it's fair to say that grizzlies do look a little bit mean. They're quite elusive, too : there are only around 150 bears living within the Yellowstone Natonal Park itself, or around 700 in the Greater Yellowstone Area.

To see one roaming, you'll need proper viewing kit. Wake before sunrise or wait until sunset and use dusk and dawn to to scour the area with your telescope and/or binoculars.

Lamar Valley and Hayden Valley are two of your best sighting spots, but Dunraven Pass,  Swan Lake Flats and Gardiners Hole are also good places to try.

Planning a summer holiday? From Alaska to Indonesia, Slovenia to Samoa, these are the very best places to travel in August

Sure, every month of the year can theoretically mean it’s holiday season, but the whole ‘school’s out’ element certainly makes August the prime time for stuffing a bag and heading off on a jaunt. Best places to travel in August

Carcassone, France

1.  Carcassone, France

France isn’t short of cracking holiday destinations. But may I make a case for the delightful Carcassonne, which isn't (completely) overrun with tourists like some of the others? There's the famous castle, sure, which is actually a properly good tourist attraction, completely beautiful and not too busy if you go in the morning. But there’s also the beautiful Cavayére Lake just a short one-euro bus ride out of the town, which is really quiet even in peak season, and has tons of kids activities and a more kid-free area too. You can sip beers in the main square by the fountain, do a classic French food shop in the supermarché, buy ridiculously good pastries at Pâtisserie Papineau and have lots (and lots) of cassoulet for dinner. You’ll also find a mixture of traditional museums and galleries showcasing local works and a number of lovely vineyards nearby. If you’ve got the car, consider a French road trip to hit Nice, Nîmes and more along the way.

2.  Alaska

August is slightly rainier in Alaska than earlier summer months, but with fewer crowds and lower prices, the benefits often outweigh the weather risks. It’s a wonderful month to spot caribou, wolves and golden eagles in Denali National Park, as well as grizzly bears, who are busy hunting salmon so they can fatten up before hibernation. They also nibble on the season’s abundant berries – blueberries are particularly fat and juicy in Alaska – and you can also taste them at the annual Alyeska Berry Festival in Anchorage. Don’t miss Alaska State Fair in Palmer, which marks the last days of summer with concerts, fairground rides and street food.

Average temp in August: Coastal areas – 10-15C/50-60F, interior areas – 7-18C/45-65F

Slovenia

3.  Slovenia

Slovenia might just be Europe’s worst-kept secret. In August, the capital Ljubljana and Lakes Bled and Bohinj are packed with locals and tourists alike, but if you do want to guarantee a crowd-free trip, there are plenty of lesser-known corners of this compact country to explore. As the holiday resorts sizzle, alpine regions offer respite from the heat, making it the perfect time to climb Mount Triglav. But if you really want to get off the beaten track, head east to wander around the pretty towns of Maribor and Ptuj, or go wine tasting in the surrounding Styrian vineyards. Slovenia has gorgeous towns around every corner, from Idrija to Kamnika via Radovljica, Brežice and all the rest.

Average temp in August: 20-28C/68-82F

Edinburgh, Scotland

4.  Edinburgh, Scotland

There is literally no better time to finally tick Edinburgh off your bucket list than in August, when the famous Edinburgh Fringe  (the biggest arts festival in the entire world) takes over the city. Be you a comedy, theatre, film or music person, the Fringe is a fun, fast, chaotic burst of all things silly and creative. There’s bars, street food, nights out and more, and we’ll be reviewing all the shows you need to know about, so keep your eyes peeled.

Iceland

5.  Iceland

There’s never a bad time to visit Iceland, right? August is the warmest month of the year here, but do remember that that means daily averages between 10 and 15 degrees celsius, so it is hardly sweltering. Still, balmy for Iceland, and visiting this gorgeous part of the world during the ubiquitously-bright summer months is an experience in itself. The grass is a little greener during August, and the warmer weather allows Iceland’s wonderful wildlife the chance to cavort through the fields. Yes, it is just like a fairytale.

Average temp in August: 10.5C/51F

East Africa

6.  East Africa

All kinds of adventures await in East Africa in August. The Great Migration is in full swing, meaning wildlife-spotting opportunities abound in Kenya’s Maasai Mara and Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, and it’s also one of the best times of year to track silverback gorillas in Uganda and Rwanda. Beach bum? Into your snorkelling and scuba diving? The weather is warm and dry (and the waters brimming with marine life) on Pemba Island and Zanzibar.

Average temp in August: Coastal areas – 27-31C/81-88F, interior areas – 20-26C/68-79F

Seattle, USA

7.  Seattle, USA

The Pacific Northwest has a reputation for being, how do we say this, a little bit drizzly. What is the best way to ensure good weather when visiting? Nothing is certain in this life, of course, but heading to Seattle and its surroundings in August is your best bet. The warm weather means outdoor activities aplenty, from city markets and food festivals to embracing nearby nature, while the ferries are also at their busiest during this time.

Average temp in August: 13-25C/56-77F

Sri Lanka

8.  Sri Lanka

Beach lovers will have the pick of the sand in Sri Lanka in August, with good weather expected pretty much everywhere in the north, east and west. Lower rainfall means an altogether more relaxed time, and August also represents the tail-end of the low season in Sri Lanka, so fewer crowds. It isn’t unusual to see blue whales here at this time of year too, and who wouldn’t want to see the world’s largest animal doing its thing?

Average temp in August: 26-30C/79-86F

Riga, Latvia

9.  Riga, Latvia

If you want an affordable European break in August, make it Riga. With its colourful old town and beautiful parks, it’s easy to while away the summer days here without breaking the bank. The warmest month of the year sees the capital come to life with open-air concerts, street performances, pop-up food stalls and firework shows.

Average temp in August: 14-22C/57-71F

Buenos Aires

10.  Buenos Aires

It’s winter in Buenos Aires, but the low season is the best time to live like a local, as residents often escape the city during the busier summer months. Culturally the capital is very much alive and kicking, with the two-week-long Tango Festival and World Cup showcasing the best of Argentina’s national dance with free performances, workshops and talks, as well as the pro-competition.

Average temp in August: 9-17C/48-62.6F

📍Discover the best  things to do in Buenos Aires

Bosnia and Herzegovina

11.  Bosnia and Herzegovina

A word of warning; it can get pretty darn hot in Bosnia and Herzegovina in August. That is more true in Herzegovina than Bosnia (Mostar tends to hover around the 40C mark), but refreshing salvation is at hand in the shape of the country’s fantastic mountains. Hiking in Bosnia and Herzegovina is still developing, but an enthusiastic group of organisations have opened up mountains like Prenj, Maglaj (the country’s highest) and Vlašić, not to mention the Olympic mountains around Sarajevo. Keep to the trails though, for your own safety.

Average temp in August: 21-31C/70-88F

Madeira

12.  Madeira

Madeira’s mild temperatures make it a winner with travellers year-round, but summer is the best time to spot or swim with whales and dolphins, of which there are more than 20 species in the island’s waters. It’s also a fine time for scuba diving, canyoning and coasteering, as well as hiking the interior’s rugged hillside trails, which follow a network of levadas – ingenious aqueducts constructed between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries to transport water to communities living in the southeast of the island.

Average temp in August: 24C/75F

Samoa

13.  Samoa

Looking for a low-key paradise isle? Samoa is blissfully free of flashy resorts and tourist traps, letting its natural and cultural riches speak for themselves. Samoa is popular with New Zealanders and Australians looking for a little winter sunshine, so book ahead to nab yourself a beach hut (known as a fale ) and spend your days hopping between the islands’ must-sees, including Insta-friendly To-Sua Ocean Trench, the Alofaaga blowholes and Falealupo Canopy Walk.

Average temp in August: 23-29C/73-84F

Bulgaria

14.  Bulgaria

Ready for long summer days spent partying on the beach? Make a beeline for Bulgaria’s affordable Black Sea Coast resorts, where there’s a sun lounger (and a glass of rakia) with your name on it. If you’re after a little culture, you’ll find the antidote to the region’s Irish pubs in Burgas, where the International Folklore Festival welcomes traditional singers, musicians and dancers from all over the Balkans and beyond to showcase their talents in late August. Inland, adventurous types should tackle Bulgaria’s highest peak, Mount Musala (2,925m), before the snows return.

Average temp in August: Coastal areas – 23-28C/73-82F, Sofia – 17-29C/63-84F

Indonesia

15.  Indonesia

There are 17,000 islands in Indonesia – but few travellers venture beyond Bali . August brings the best weather and the inevitable accompanying crowds, so you’re better off skipping the chaos of Kuta and yogi-saturated Ubud for underrated isles such as Sumba or Pulau Weh, both of which boast white sands, turquoise waters and cheaper accommodation. Raja Ampat in West Papua receives some rain at this time of year, but don’t let that put you off booking a homestay and exploring its dazzling coral reef.

Average temp in August: 24-32C/75-90F

18 Amazing Places to Visit in August in the USA

With balmy temperatures, long days, and endless hours of sunshine, I think the summer months in this country are the best time to create incredible memories! Here are my favorite spots from my time spent exploring during August…

1. Half Moon Bay, Northern California

Half Moon Bay California

I love this gem of a place located just south of San Francisco lies pretty Half Moon Bay! Like much of the California coast, it has a pleasant climate, although the nights can be cool and often foggy; this month has some of the best weather.

Many of North California’s best beaches, like Venice and Francis, are here. My favorite was Mavericks Beach, located just north of the town. I loved watching the surfers here and the waves that can reach 18m in height.

I also hiked and would recommend the Devil’s Slide Trail, a 2-kilometer trail with seriously awesome views of the dramatic coastline!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 235 Main Street Half Moon Bay, CA 94019
  • Average temperatures – 19 degrees

My favorite highlights…

  • Walking along the Coastside Trail, which stretches nearly 5 miles long and where I saw gorgeous views overlooking the ocean.
  • Wandering along Main Street and discovering an array of shopping boutiques and fun dining options.

2. Mackinac Island, Michigan

Mackinac Island Michigan Summer

Located in Lake Huron, this resort island has no cars, and the old buildings are beautifully maintained. I’m a massive fan of this gem because when I visit, I feel like I’m traveling back in time!

I recommend strolling down the town streets, admiring the Victorian buildings, and then stopping by one of the town’s 12 museums.

I loved the range of outdoor pursuit options, from sailing to strolling along the beaches. And if you have a sweet tooth, I suggest trying some local fudge. There is a 3-day event towards the end of this month that celebrates this local sweet treat!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 7200 Lake Shore Dr, Mackinac Island, MI 49757
  • Average temperatures  – 23 degrees

My highlights…

  • Checking out the interesting Fort Mackinac which was founded in 1870.
  • Discovering the incredible 146-foot tall Arch Rock, which is locally famous for having superpowers!

3. Priest Lake, Idaho

Priest Lake Idaho - great August USA destination

I love this stunning beauty spot and the State Park that adjoins it! Located close to the Canadian border, it’s surrounded by high mountains and fir and cedar forests, the home of black bears, a few grizzlies, moose, and whitetail deer.

If you want to stay over, there are a few accommodation options, from resorts such as Hill’s and Elkin’s to do-it-yourself State camping grounds.

In my opinion, July and this month are great times to visit if you enjoy temperate weather (up to 29c) and want to hike, swim, or go boating.

I love the beauty and clarity of this lake, the rivers that feed it, and the breathtaking scenery; it’s a tranquil gem!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 174 Coolin, Idaho 83821
  • Average temperature –  26 degrees
  • Going hiking along the trails of the Selkirk Mountains and photographing the breathtaking views overlooking the lake.
  • Hiring a kayak and exploring the waters.

4. Cambria, California

Cambria Elephant Seals

I personally think there’s nothing better than a Californian summer road trip, and I love this relaxed and welcoming beach town located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It’s ideally situated if you are traveling the iconic Highway One route, so I highly recommend stopping for a while.

In my experience, this month is a great time to visit. The weather is pleasant, with low rainfall, and it is perfect for hiking, cycling, and swimming. Moonstone Beach offers something for everyone, and I recommend beachcombing for moonstones or trying to spot otters or seals!

I also suggest strolling the mile-long boardwalk, visiting the nearby impressive Hearst Castle , hiking the Coastal Bluff Trail for beautiful coastline views, and visiting the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery.

While it is much quieter this month, this is when the bull seals finish their moulting, and I loved watching them relaxing on the beach. Cambria is also a foodie’s heaven, with many types of cuisine available and wineries just a fifteen-minute drive away.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 767 Main Street, Cambria, California 93428
  • Average temperature  – 17 degrees
  • Taking a stroll across the gorgeous Moonstone Beach, one of California’s most beautiful beaches.
  • Walking through the historic downtown filled with shopping boutiques, restaurants and a cool micro-brewery.
  • Hiking the very scenic Bluff Trail at Fiscalini Ranch Preserve.

5. San Juan Islands, Washington

San Juan Islands - places to visit in August

I recommend heading north from Seattle to Anacortes for a fantastic summer trip to catch one of the Washington State Ferries. The ferry transported me to four of the 172 islands and islets of San Juan. The weather in the islands is pretty temperate all year round but at its best towards the end of summer.

One of my favorite activities here is whale watching. This is one of the regions where orcas and other whales can be seen year-round via the boat tours that set off from Friday Harbour on San Juan.

Each of the four main islands has its attractions, but I personally think Orcas and San Juan are the must-dos if you have limited time!

San Juan is the busiest and most populated island, but it is still tranquil compared to the mainland. I suggest visiting the Whale Museum to learn more about these magnificent creatures, enjoying one of the local restaurants, and picking an outdoor activity ranging from hiking to kayaking!

If you want more peace, I suggest heading to Orcas Island. It is home to amazing hikes, like the 6 km hike up Mt Constitution. On a clear day, you can see Mt Rainier and even Vancouver!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 165 First Street South, Friday Harbor, WA 98250
  • Average temperature  – 20 degrees

My personal highlights…

  • Renting a bike and exploring around the islands.
  • Going on an adrenaline-pumping 3-hour ziplining adventure.
  • Sampling mouth-watering local gin at the island’s distillery!

6. South Lake Tahoe, California

South Lake Tahoe

I’m a big fan of Lake Tahoe and not just as a winter sports destination, in my opinion, it has a lot of fun and activities to offer all year round.

There are many trails, ranging from children—and dog-friendly paths to more challenging routes. I tried and recommend the flat and accessible Spooner Lake Hike or the day-long Mt.Tallac Trail, which is 5 miles and rises 3,000 feet.

For the intrepid, I recommend the 265-kilometer Tahoe Rim Trail, which you can travel on foot, mountain bike, or enter for the Tahoe Triathlon at the end of this month! If you still have excess energy, I suggest spending your nights hitting Tahoe’s nightclubs and casinos—it’s a buzzing spot!

I loved the summer concert performances at the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena, which attracted big names like Lady Gaga. Alternatively, you can try the free concerts at Lakeview Commons.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 1901 Lisa Maloff Way, South Lake Tahoe, CA  96150
  • Average temperatures – 26 degrees
  • Enjoying live music at a summer concert.
  • Cycling along the paved trails took me past stunning mountain scenery and the gorgeous beaches.

7. Cannon Beach, Oregon

Summer at Cannon Beach

This place is an Instagrammer’s dream! Cannon Beach takes its name from a cannon washed ashore from the US schooner Shark that ran aground in 1846. I personally think all of Oregon’s beaches are picturesque, but this beach stood out to me for the striking 72-meter Haystack, which juts out of the ocean.

The rock is home to many nesting seabirds, such as tufted puffins and murres and at low tide, I recommend exploring the tidal pools at the base of the rock.

Surfing is popular here, and wildlife-watching is on nearby Ecola State Park trails. Although I didn’t spot any on my trip, bald eagles and Roosevelt elk reside here.

I found that the best weather comes towards the end of this month.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: Cannon Beach Chamber of Commerce, 207 N Spruce | PO Box 64, Cannon Beach OR 97110
  • Average temperatures – 20 degrees
  • Taking surfing lessons!
  • Dining at the upbeat Mi Corazón Restaurant, where I dined on Latin cuisine.
  • Hiking the Indian Beach Trail, which took me past gorgeous coastal scenery.

8. Stonington, Maine

Stonington, Maine, USA

I loved this tranquil gem! It has a population of around 1040 and an average temperature of 19°C this month. Stonington is a small but beautiful waterside city which was perfect for my low-key, relaxed summer break.

Bridges link Stonington and Deer Isle’s coastal towns to the mainland. Stonington is a quaint, scenic, and charming place. This month offers a cooler-weather summer break, perfect for those trying to escape the searing summer heat in other states.

To immerse yourself in the lifestyle here, I recommend trying all the water activities, like boating, kayaking, and swimming, and also sampling locally sourced food, which is delicious!

I also suggest exploring the numerous art galleries, the charming local opera house, and the cute gift shops, I found plenty!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 13 Atlantic Ave, Stonington, ME 04681
  • Average temperatures –  27 degrees
  • Wandering around Main Street in Downtown where I found design shops, art galleries, and boutiques.
  • Spending the day relaxing and swimming at DuBois Beach.
  • I checked out the Mystic Seaport Museum , where I learned about the history of Stonington.

9. Portland, Oregon

Portland City summer

I’ve spent a lot of time in Portland , and I honestly think it’s at its best in summer, which is also its peak tourist season. If you visit this month, you’ll also see the beautiful roses the city is famous for.

I recommend heading to the International Rose Test Garden in Washington Park to see them and exploring the nearby Portland Japanese Garden !

I also love that many fun events are taking place this month, like the Pickathon Music Festival and the Soapbox Derby. The city also prides itself on bike-ability, so make sure you get involved in the annual Bridge Pedal.

This is a fun, family-friendly event and one of the world’s largest group pedaling events. Here, you can pedal streets closed to motor traffic.

If all that exercise has made you hungry, I recommend sampling food and craft beers at one of the many farmers’ markets or street fairs in the summer.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 877 SW Taylor St. Portland, OR 97204
  • Average temperatures – 27 degrees
  • Visiting the beautiful International Rose Test Garden.
  • Taking a boat tour along the breathtaking Willamette River.
  • Having fun at a summer music festival.

10. Glacier National Park, Montana

Glacier National Park

This one is for the nature lovers! This magnificent park is over 4000 square kilometers of forests and lakes and is traversed by sub-ranges of the Rockies. It is at its busiest this month, but in my opinion, the weather is ideal, making it a great time to visit.

It has been a resort area for over a century; the original hotels are now National Historic Landmarks. They were built to accommodate tourists coming to the Park via the Great Northern Railroad and the later “Going-to-the-Sun” road.

I recommend a night at the respected Many Glacier Hotel or Lake McDonald Lodge if you can afford it.

I also suggest going nature-watching, whether it is wildlife, birding or identifying some of the over 1100 floral species you’ll find here! If you are lucky, you’ll see the beargrass lilies in full bloom like I did!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: West Glacier, MT 59936
  • Average temperatures  – 21 degrees
  • Driving along the incredible Going-to-the-Sun Road, one of the park’s most scenic journeys.
  • Catching a sunrise at the hidden Two Medicine landmark which was an unforgettable experience.
  • Going paddleboarding at Lake McDonald.

11. Berkshires, Massachusetts

Berkshires, Massachusetts

This well-heeled spot comes alive in the summer months, and on my trip, I discovered mountains, nature, and premier cultural events. I particularly loved Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where artists of every genre have appeared, from Yo-yo Ma to Earth, Wind, and Fire.

I also highly recommend visiting art museums, like the Clark in Williamsburg, which has works by Rodin, Renoir, and Degas and impressive silver and ceramic collections.

I also loved their scenic hiking trails, swimming in the numerous lakes, whitewater rafting and the fun ziplining!

  • Visitors Center Address: 1Berkshire PO Box 4829. Pittsfield, MA 01202
  • Average temperature – 27 degrees
  • Watching a concert whilst enjoying a picnic under the stars at Tanglewood’s open-air venue.
  • Hiking through Mount Greylock features the highest point in the state and great observation points.
  • Going boating on Lake Onota.

12. Blue Lakes, Colorado

Blue Lakes, Colorado

I came here for the gorgeous summer hiking and wildflowers and wasn’t disappointed! Colorado is famous for its scenic trails, mostly the 900-km-long Colorado Trail, but my personal favorite was the Blue Lakes Trail, which was a separate route in the Mt Sneffels Wilderness area in Uncompahgre National Forest.

In my experience, even the drive to the trailhead is a worthy detour and has some seriously incredible views. You can traverse the whole trail or try a short hike to Lower Lake, which is 5 km from the trailhead and has campsites.

I found trying to reach the other two lakes more challenging, but I was rewarded with outstanding views and pretty wildflowers. Species such as Indian paintbrushes, campions, columbines, larkspur, and lupins grow along the trail from July to mid-August, so you’ll be in for a treat!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: Telluride, CO 81435
  • Average temperatures  – 19 degrees
  • Capturing Insta-worthy shots of the scenic views, flowers and lush surroundings.
  • Soaking up the gorgeous sights overlooking the breathtaking turquoise lakes.
  • Hiking the spectacular Blue Lakes Trail.

13. Beavers Bend Resort Park, Oklahoma

Beaver Bend State Park Oklahoma

I think this is a great, family-friendly spot! Here, I went kayaking, hiking, and bike riding. I even went to arts and crafts classes and played bingo!

I was also impressed with their 18-hole golf course, volleyball courts, and water skiing on Broken Bow Lake, which was also an excellent spot for scuba divers (the water in this area rarely gets above a bracing 15C).

I loved the nature documentaries screened in the evenings and stargazing in the clear, unpolluted skies. Leashed pets are also welcome, and some chalets are pet-friendly, too.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: Broken Bow, OK 74728
  • Average temperature –  24 degrees
  • Hiking the Friends Trail Loop and seeing incredible scenery.
  • Renting a kayak on Broken Bow Lake.

14. Hot Springs, Arkansas

Hot Springs, Arkansas

I loved spending a summer break in this Arkansas gem ! This is an extraordinary place where 47 springs on Hot Springs Mountain provide the town below with 1 million gallons of water daily at a steaming 62c or 143F temperature.

The springs are mineral-rich and rumored to be restorative, and I found no less than eight historic spas in Bathhouse Row, which are maintained by the National Park Service and their gardens. My favorite was Garvan Woodland Gardens, which has a photogenic Japanese section.

The resort’s popularity created a building boom, even during the Great Depression, and Hot Springs is nearly as famous as Miami for its Art Deco buildings. I just loved kicking back and relaxing here; it’s a special place!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 369 Central Ave, Hot Springs, AR 71901
  • Average temperatures – 34 degrees
  • Hopping on the National Park Duck Tour which was a fun and unique way to explore Hot Springs.
  • Checking out the entertainment-filled T-Rex Fun Spot.
  • Going on a wine tour at The Winery of Hot Springs.

15. Seabrook, Washington

Seabrook Washington - best places to visit in the summer

Located in the North Beach area along the central Washington coast, in my opinion, this is one of the best vacation destination cities in Washington!

The New Beach Town on the Washington Coast has about 450 newly built homes and 12 businesses; I love that it’s a small and pretty town without the bustle and rush of major city life.

The town is compact and walkable and was built to be a sustainable, urbanist community. I highly recommend parking your car and exploring the rest of the city on foot or a bicycle. The summer temperature averages 22°C, so this month’s weather is fine and comfortable.

I loved visiting the market, where I bought local crafts, Pacific Northwest food, and gift items, and visiting the numerous restaurants and bakeries for foodie treats.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: WA-109, Pacific Beach, WA 98571
  • Average temperature – 31 degrees
  • Exploring the unique shops at the Saturday market downtown.
  • Going on a food tour and visiting the great restaurants, cafes and bars.
  • Relaxing along the beach and enjoying picturesque views overlooking the coastline.

16. Long Beach Island, New Jersey

Long Beach Island, New Jersey

Part of a set of barrier islands in front of the New Jersey coastline, I thought this was a stunning spot! For those looking for a quieter and more relaxing holiday, I highly recommend Long Beach as it differs from its brash southern neighbor.

The island itself is about 30 km long and only accessible via Route 72 from the mainland, which takes one through to Ship Bottom, roughly at the midpoint of the island.

Only 10,000 people reside there permanently, but the population increases tenfold in the summer months. Although the weather during this month can be hot, I love that the cool ocean breezes reduce the heat and humidity in the afternoons.

I personally think all the beaches are welcoming and beautiful. My favorites, though, were the Island Beach State Park near the Barnegat Lighthouse. I also loved visiting the historic maritime forests for bird-watching.

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 265 West 9th Street Ship Bottom NJ 08008
  • Average temperatures  – 27 degrees
  • Paragliding over the Atlantic Ocean!
  • Visiting the beautiful Barnegat Lighthouse, a landmark symbol of New Jersey.
  • Having fun on a hot day at the Thundering Surf Water Park which featured many fun attractions.

17. Seneca, South Carolina

Seneca, South Carolina, USA

This is my choice for a budget-friendly break! Owing to its low cost of living and high quality of life, I personally think Seneca, South Carolina, is an excellent choice for an alternative summer vacation away from the crowds.

The city is situated in the northwestern corner of South Carolina and enjoys a gorgeous position in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It has a population of 8368 and a hot climate of 32°C in this month.

I love the large stunning lake where you can go kayaking and boating, the cycling and hiking trails, the museums, and even the casinos. In my opinion, this place would suit couples, families, and friends seeking a different kind of vacation for the summer!

  • Visitor’s Center Address: 221 E North 1st St. Seneca, SC 29678
  • Average temperature  – 31 degrees
  • Going for a refreshing drink at The Spot on The Alley.
  • Going boating on Lake Keowee.
  • Exploring High Falls Country Park.

18. Block Island, Rhode Island

Block Island, Rhode Island

After I stepped off the ferry on Block Island, I felt all my tensions slipping away! Located South of Rhode Island, the island is predominantly a nature reserve, with only 1000 residents. Even at the height of summer, I love that the 25 km of beaches are still relatively uncrowded.

I loved sailing, swimming, and just lazing around on the beach. I would highly recommend visiting Cow Cove and the dramatic Mohegan Bluffs. I also suggest booking your ferry trip in advance, especially if you plan to take your car.

  • Visitor’s Center Address:   4 Center Rd, New Shoreham, RI 02807
  • Average temperatures – 25 degrees
  • Hiking up to Mohegan Bluffs for a magnificent view overlooking the beautiful ocean and landscape.
  • Checking out the Spring Street Art Gallery.
  • Hiring an e-bike and heading out onto the scenic Clay Head Trail, the views of the scenic rocky beach and the bluffs were amazing!

The Best Places to Travel This July, From Key West to Montenegro

By Caitlin Morton

best places to travel in july The Brando Tahiti

School’s out, the sun is shining, and it’s officially time to plan a proper summer vacation . The best places to travel in July are all about making those OOO days really count, even if it means venturing a bit off the radar—think diving tours off the coast of Bonaire, multi-day hiking trips through central Iceland, and Olympic Games viewing parties some 9,700 miles outside of Paris (more on that later). And if you’d rather fill your trip with more relaxing and less adventuring, fear not: We have plenty of destinations for you as well.

We know you’re probably itching for a spectacular holiday as much as we are, so we’ve gathered up a list of places that cover the geographical gamut. Whether you want to make an easy trip to one of the coolest cities in the US (we reveal that answer below) or take multiple flights to reach your final once-in-a-lifetime destination, here are 11 of the best places to travel in July.

This article has been updated since its original publish date.

GlacierNationalPark

Glacier National Park, Montana

Glacier National Park is one of the best places to travel in July for one major reason: wildflowers . While you might consider spring to be the best time to see colorful flowers, the park’s northern location in Montana means the blooms reach their peak in July and August. Hike along the Garden Wall Trail to see fields of white beargrass, pink fireweed, and yellow glacier lilies as far as the eye can see.

When you’ve had your fill of hiking (and your phone is full of photos), head back to The Resort at Paws Up , a sprawling, 37,000-acre working cattle ranch in western Montana. Their safari-style canvas tents will make you feel like you’re in the Wild West, while locally sourced meals and spa treatments are worthy of a five-star hotel.

Mamula Island

It’s not easy to find an uncrowded beach in Europe during the summer months, but the country of Montenegro is one of your best bets. It takes up less space than Connecticut and has a lower population than Stockholm , but the tiny Balkan nation should not be overlooked—especially since it’s quieter and more untouched than neighboring Croatia and Greece. Beyond the beaches, you can take advantage of the country’s historic Old Towns, UNESCO-protected parks, and lakes begging for a swim.

The country also happens to be home to Mamula Island Hotel , a former 19th-century fortress that was reimagined and unveiled in April 2023. Situated on its eponymous island in Boka Bay, this knockout property features sea-facing rooms, three dining venues, and a beautiful glass-covered internal courtyard. Try to book one of the contemporary panoramic suites in the crown of the main tower, complete with floor-to-ceiling glass walls and terraces equipped with telescopes for stargazing.

Pantanal

The Pantanal

Stretching across parts of southeastern Brazil , Paraguay, and Bolivia , the Pantanal is the world’s largest floodplain and boasts the highest concentration of wildlife on the entire South American continent (yes, even more than the Amazon). Here you can spot ultra-rare jaguars, crocodiles, monkeys, anacondas, and some 650 species of birds; and the dry season from July to October boasts the best visibility.

Note that reaching the Pantanal takes a bit of work: You must first fly to São Paulo (a great excuse to stay overnight at the São Paulo Rosewood ), then fly to the Campo Grande Airport in Mato Grosso, then either drive or take a chartered flight to your lodge. And that lodge should definitely be the upscale Caiman Ecological Reserve , a 204-square-mile refuge known for its luxury villas and local conservation efforts. Between visiting jaguar sanctuaries and horseback riding through the jungle, rest up at the reserve’s hammock garden, take a dip in the pool, or enjoy the starry sky from your private balcony.

Bonaire

Only 50 miles from Venezuela, Bonaire is the farthest east of the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao). Since it sits outside the Hurricane Belt—and since its relatively remote location means its never as crowded as other Caribbean islands—there’s not really a bad time to visit; but July is one of the best months to spot animals both above and below sea level. The Pekelmeer Flamingo Sanctuary on the southern end of the island is home to more than 10,000 flamingos (July marks the tail end of breeding season), which you can spot from the road or nearby Pink Beach.

But the most beautiful parts of Bonaire can be found just below the surrounding waters. The entire coral reef around the island is a national park (Bonaire National Marine Park), with brightly colored coral and wildlife ranging from nurse sharks and seahorses to friendly green turtles. There are 85 dive sites within the park and dozens of tour operators on the island, so there’s really no excuse to stay exclusively on dry land.

Oaxaca Mexico

Oaxaca, Mexico

Far from the coastal spring break hot spots of Cancún and Cabo San Lucas, Oaxaca , in south-central Mexico, is one of the most important cultural hubs in the Americas. Explore the region’s craft revolution led by female entrepreneurs, secure a table at Alejandro Ruiz’s Casa Oaxaca for traditional dishes and cocktails, then head to the streets for delicious tlayudas and tacos served from food trucks (our favorites for each: Tlayudas La Chinita, and Lechoncito de Oro, respectively).

An extra special reason to visit in July is the vibrant Guelaguetza Festival, which takes place on the last two Mondays of the month. The festival celebrates the 16 different ethnolinguistic groups of Oaxaca with folk dancing, traditional clothing, mezcal fairs, and concerts.

We named Mongolia one of the best places to travel in 2024 for several reasons chief among them being the countrys...

We named Mongolia one of the best places to travel in 2024 for several reasons, chief among them being the country’s relatively recent accessibility. Last year, Mongolia opened up visa-free travel for an additional 34 nationalities—bringing the total up to 61—in an effort to become a more popular tourist destination. (The campaign is set to run until 2025.) There are also talks of a direct US–Mongolia flight launching later this year.

July is an especially exciting time to visit Mongolia. This time every year, the country throws its annual Naadam Festival (July 11-13), an ancient-style version of the Olympics with horse racing, wrestling, and archery. The event appears on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list for its intrinsic connection to “the nomadic civilization of the Mongols,” and the competitions truly are a sight to behold. You can watch the opening ceremony in Ulaanbaatar’s National Sports Stadium then stick around for the archery and wrestling games; you’ll have to head to the Khui Doloon Khudag field outside of town to watch the horse races.

Tahiti surfing

While people around the world are flocking to Paris this July for the 2024 Olympic Games, we suggest heading to Tahiti for a more tropical—but still sports-oriented—summer vacation. The southern coastal village of Teahupo’o will host the Olympic’s 10-day surf competition this year starting on July 27, and visitors can watch the event on giant screens set up in parks, beaches, and marinas across the island. This leg of the games is particularly exciting this year: It’s only the second time surfing has appeared on the Olympic program (it debuted in Tokyo in 2020), and Teahupo’o’s famous break is often dubbed one of “the deadliest waves in the world.” Surf’s up, indeed.

After all those secondhand adrenaline rushes, you’ll probably want to rest up in an impossibly luxurious resort—something Tahiti has in spades. The InterContinental Tahiti Resort & Spa has all the makings of a classic French Polynesian property, from thatched-roof overwater bungalows to holistic spa treatments. But if you have some extra time, consider hopping on a 20-minute flight north to Tetiaroa, home to The Brando . This ultra-remote, ultra-polished resort plops guests down on a private atoll surrounded by white sand and shallow, turquoise water. It’s just you and nature—with a spa, multi-course dining experience, and villa with a private plunge pool thrown in.

If you’ve spent any time in Chicago , you probably aren’t surprised that our readers consistently vote it the best large city in the United States . And if you haven’t spent time here? We suggest booking a trip to the Windy City stat. There are tons of summer activities for both first-time and seasoned travelers, including visiting the beaches along Lake Michigan, taking Chicago River boat tours, watching the fireworks at Navy Pier, and attending festivals like the Southport Art Fest (July 6 to 7) and Pitchfork Music Festival (July 19 to 21).

There’s no shortage of great hotels in the city , but do yourself a favor and book a few nights at The Peninsula Chicago , consistently voted one of the best properties in town by both our readers and editors. There are many reasons why this decades-old hotel has continued to impress, from that iconic 19th-floor spa to those epic marble bathrooms. We also have our eyes on citizenM Chicago Downtown —the hotel opened in late 2022, and its high-tech features and colorful, offbeat decor still feel delightfully fresh.

Highland Base Kerlingarfjöll

There really is no wrong time to visit Iceland, but we’re particularly fond of chasing the midnight sun during July—the more daylight hours for exploring, the better. The summer months also make certain parts of the country accessible that might not be in the winter, including the 34-mile Laugavegurinn hiking trail in the Central Highlands. The mountain huts and campsites along the trail are only open between late June and early September, giving you a small time window to experience the hot springs, black lava fields, and multicolored mountains along the path.

If the term “mountain hut” makes you cringe a little, fear not: Iceland has some luxury stays that might be more up your alley. The Reykjavik Edition opened in the nation’s capital a couple of years ago, featuring custom furniture, local treats in the minibars, and incredible city and harbor views. Making a splash further off the grid is Highland Base Kerlingarfjöll , a remote property with tons of accommodation options (hotel rooms, A-frame huts, campsites) and summer activities ranging from guided hikes to hot spring soaks.

Annual Hemingway Days festival

Ernest Hemingway lived in Key West for the entirety of the 1930s, and the tiny island has been honoring him ever since—most notably with the Hemingway Days celebration held every July (this year’s dates are July 16-21). This annual event is piling on extra festivities this year, which marks the author’s 125th birthday anniversary. You can expect prose and poetry readings, a three-day marlin fishing tournament, and special museum exhibits, as well as the festival’s showstopping Hemingway Look-Alike Contest. Because what’s better than one Ernest Hemingway? Answer: 140 Ernest Hemingways.

Even if your trip doesn’t overlap with the exact Hemingway Days dates, you can still glimpse a piece of the author’s life at the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum. Take guided tours of the house where For Whom the Bell Tolls was penned, then stroll through the surrounding gardens and try to spot the famous six-toe cats who roam the property. In terms of accommodations, you have many excellent hotels to choose from (our readers love The Marker )—or opt for something a little cheekier and book a room at the adults-only, clothing-optional Island House Key West Resort .

North Island Okavango

June–August marks the dry winter season in Botswana , which many consider to be the perfect time to visit. Not only are weather conditions at their best (no rain, lower risk of malaria), but these months offer prime wildlife viewing opportunities as animals tend to stick around watering holes. The country also happens to be one of our favorite safari spots in Africa. While you’re sure to spot wildlife in Kenya’s Maasai Mara or in South Africa’s Kruger, you’ll also be in the company of a couple dozen other jeeps filled with tourists; in Botswana, it feels like it’s only you and nature.

This year is a particularly exciting time to visit, because you’ll get the chance to be one of the earliest guests at North Island Okavango . This intimate micro-camp (and 2024 Hot List winner) occupies its own floating patch of land in the Okavango Delta, which means you have 24/7 lagoon views of hippos, elephants, and other wildlife. Suites with wraparound decks and walkways leading directly out onto the water let you get even closer to the action.

The Best Weekend Getaways for Couples

Want to spice things up in your relationship? Then it's time to get out of town.

Patrick Tappe/EyeEm/Getty Images

Nothing keeps the sparks flying like traveling together. Navigating new places with your significant other while spending quality one-on-one time is a great way to deepen your bond and create lasting memories.

Whether for Valentine's Day, an anniversary, or just a long holiday weekend, why not go away together to a rustic lodge, laze on a tropical beach with an umbrella-topped beverage, or cheers to your love at a countryside winery somewhere warm and sunny? Whatever your idea of a romantic escape is, we'll help you get there with these great weekend destinations perfect for couples. Get ready for starry-eyed bliss.

Montreal, Canada

If you're seeking a European-esque destination without the transatlantic flight, head to Montreal. This sophisticated Canadian metropolis is rich with history, centuries-old architecture, and bustling French bistros.

Most tourists shy away from Montreal until spring, so those who enjoy a winter wonderland vibe can delight in a quieter visit full of cold-weather charms, like ice skating at Parc La Fontaine, dogsledding in Mont Tremblant, and guided nighttime snowshoeing on Mont Royal complete with beautiful views of the city lights. Travelers can then warm up with hot chocolate by a roaring fire at one of Old Montreal's cushy hotels.

After checking out the vibrant downtown scene, couples can treat themselves to an indulgent massage or facial at the luxurious Spa St. James at The Ritz-Carlton, Montreal, or enjoy cocktails and tapas at the W Montreal's Living Room . The sexy space and its relaxed vibe will set the mood for romance.

Watch Hill, Rhode Island

Just a short drive from many locations in the northeast, Watch Hill is an idyllic place to visit year round. For an intimate stay, hightail it to Ocean House , a grand 1868 Victorian oceanfront beauty and the crown jewel of the New England town. Couples can enjoy long walks on the private white-sand beach and canoodling in front of the stately stone fireplace, cocktail in hand. There's a farm-to-table restaurant on site, plus a prestigious cooking school offering guests gourmet classes and intimate tastings.

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Turks and Caicos is one of the Caribbean's best destinations for a romantic retreat. These easy-to-access islands — flights are under two hours from Miami and under four from New York — will have couples in paradise in no time.

For a dreamy place to call home for a few days, settle in at The Shore Club . The first resort on beautiful Long Bay Beach — the most private stretch of sand on the island of Providenciales — offers seclusion and modern amenities. Start your day on a paddle board over dazzling turquoise waters, lap up some much-needed R&R at four cabana-lined pools, and cap off your night with fresh seafood at SUI-REN, the resort's Japanese-Peruvian restaurant.

In between lounging, couples can embark on a lovely horseback ride along the white-sand beach or indulge in a stress-relieving spa treatment. And don't miss downtown Grace Bay, a hub for eateries, bars, shopping, and nightlife. There's so much on offer to refuel the spark in any relationship.

Palm Springs, California

Glamorized as Old Hollywood's vacation destination of choice, Palm Springs is still as hip as it was in Frank Sinatra's day. The desert oasis entices travelers with stylish resorts, world-class restaurants, and majestic desert views. It's a haven for hikers, adventure seekers, and golfers — with more than 100 area courses.

Try a backcountry Jeep tour through the San Andreas Fault Zone or make a trip to Joshua Tree National Park , about an hour's drive away. Looking to unwind? Soak in the natural healing waters at Desert Hot Springs or head to one of the area's many day spas for a hot-stone couples massage. Palm Springs also has a foodie scene, and many of the city's finest establishments offer patio dining under the stars.

For a relaxing staycation, book a suite at The Ritz-Carlton, Rancho Mirage . With everything from clifftop dining to a luxe spa surrounded by the beautiful Santa Rosa Mountains, you won't have to leave the grounds to have an unforgettable weekend. There's postcard-worthy scenery in every direction, and we recommend taking it all in from a cabana at the pool while sipping an Arnold Palmer. The golf legend debuted the now-famous iced tea-lemonade drink in Palm Springs in the late '60s.

Walland, Tennessee

Take your love of adventure to new heights with a luxurious mountain retreat. Blackberry Mountain , a Relais & Châteaux resort nestled among 5,200 wondrous acres in the Great Smoky Mountains, is the perfect place to get cozy with your other half.

This rustic sanctuary balances a peaceful environment with active and wellness offerings. Outdoorsy couples can revel in everything from hiking, mountain biking, and candlelight yoga to relaxing forest baths, woodland meditation, and restorative spa treatments. After nourishing your mind and body, feed your soul at three one-of-a-kind restaurants that showcase Blackberry Farm's celebrated hospitality and culinary program.

Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston , called "Holy City" because of its long history of religious tolerance, is a beloved destination of many travelers due to its historic landmarks, cobblestone streets, booming food scene, and Southern charm.

Foodie couples will be in heaven: The culinary capital of the South boasts a myriad of standout spots and immersive experiences. Don't miss oysters at King Street's seafood stunner, The Ordinary , spicy fried chicken at Leon's Oyster Shop , and Texas-style brisket at Lewis Barbecue , just to name a few. For a post-dinner classic cocktail, belly up to The Bar & Patio at Husk . Fancy some bubbly? Check out the Champagne bar Camellias at Hotel Bennett.

Opt for a stay at the French Quarter Inn , a boutique gem in the heart of the historic district. At the end of a jam-packed (and no doubt delicious) day, the hotel's top-notch turndown service with a "pillow menu" — featuring seven different comfy options for resting your head — will ensure the sweetest dreams.

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

The largest of the three Cayman Islands is the ultimate sanctuary for couples looking for a Caribbean beach oasis — at any pace. With warm, dry weather and fewer crowds than during the height of winter, early spring is an ideal time to visit Grand Cayman and its world-renowned Seven Mile Beach.

A range of water sports invites epic adventures surrounded by the island's sparkling waters. You can kayak through lush, tropical mangroves or charter a catamaran to Rum Point on the north coast. Want to indulge in some rest and relaxation with your beloved? Sun-drenched afternoons spent lounging on pink-sand beaches or entwined in a hammock will do the trick.

Grand Cayman's spectacular sunsets are a quintessential backdrop for passionate evenings. Catch magical views of the fiery spectacle at Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa , followed by an exceptional dinner experience at Avecita with a custom chefs' counter tasting of seasonal, wood-fired fare that's unique to the Caribbean. Pro tip: snag a reservation in advance — there are only 30 seats and just one seating per night.

Paso Robles, California

Uncork that lovin' feeling with a jaunt to California 's third-largest wine region (following more famous territories, Napa and Sonoma). Nestled halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco along the state's central coast lies a vast rolling countryside speckled with vineyards, olive groves, farms, and ranches.

With its natural beauty and laid-back vibe, Paso Robles is a perfect stop for a relaxing long weekend. Wine is the main attraction here: Sip your way through cabernet sauvignon, zinfandel, merlot, and more at 200-plus wineries. Many tastings take place on sun-drenched outdoor spaces with breathtaking vistas, creating a next-level experience. Visitors tend to fall in love with Paso's chill ambiance, and lodging is typically more affordable than in California's more well-known wine regions.

If you get wined out — is that even a thing? — you can switch it up by sampling local olive oils, touring a craft brewery, or taking a dip in a hot spring. Downtown, you'll find interesting boutiques and great eateries. Stop by The General Store for honey, olive oil, soaps, and handmade goods from area producers to bring home.

Park City, Utah

Tessa Desjardins/Travel + Leisure

What's more dreamy than cozying up by a fireplace in a snowy mountain lodge? Having local whiskey and chocolates in hand, of course. Park City is a winter wonderland rich with small-town charms, and it's quickly accessible from Salt Lake City International Airport.

Hit the slopes at two world-class resorts — Park City Mountain and Deer Valley — which offer some of the world's greatest ski conditions. In between runs on fresh powder, savor magnificent snow-capped landscapes and gourmet fare at several on-mountain pit stops. For a stellar après-ski situation, make your way to the ski-in, ski-out St. Regis Deer Valley resort for decadent hot chocolate, fireside s'mores, and craft cocktails.

Beyond mountain sports, Utah's historic mining town is like a holiday postcard come to life, full of perfect date activities like sleigh rides, ice skating, hot-air balloon rides, dogsledding, and shopping along historic Main Street, where the facades of many acclaimed restaurants and saloons are preserved from the 1880s. Unwind with a whiskey flight at Park City's own High West Distillery . For an excellent candlelit dinner featuring local live music, head to Riverhorse on Main , then saddle up to popular No Name Saloon Bar & Grill for a nightcap. There's so much for couples to see and do in "Winter's Favorite Town."

Playa Del Carmen, Mexico

Just a short drive south from the Cancun airport, Playa del Carmen is situated along the Yucatán's palm-lined Caribbean coastline. With its unspoiled natural setting and upscale hotels, Mexico's Riviera Maya is a first-rate vacation destination — and an ideal escape for lovebirds seeking warm weather.

If privacy and luxury is your speed, say "hola" to the area's most romantic resort: The five-star Rosewood Mayakoba . Set along the edges of a freshwater lagoon, the property features refined accommodations with over-the-top amenities, heated plunge pools, and in-room mezcal to spice things up. You'll also find three infinity pools sunken in the sand, an open kitchen for interactive culinary experiences, and a beachfront fire pit to curl up next to in the moonlight.

New Paltz, New York

Looking for a place that's a short drive from New York City but feels worlds away? Reserve a room at Mohonk Mountain House . Family-owned and -operated since 1869, this Victorian resort is perched on the the banks of crystal blue Lake Mohonk in New Paltz.

The grand, castle-like property offers couples an award-winning spa, farm-to-table cuisine, and a range of daily outdoor activities. In winter, you can go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing on groomed trails and ice skating on the private pavilion. Warmer months bring horseback riding, canoeing, and hiking in the surrounding Shawangunk Ridge.

Leisurely, romantic days are also welcome: Sip hot chocolate and snuggle up by one of the stone fireplaces, soak in the outdoor heated mineral pool, or watch the sunset from rocking chairs on the porch. Just being with your sweetheart, surrounded by pristine mountain wilderness, is enough to make you fall in love all over again.

Prince Harry receives emotional gift as Meghan Markle gives update on Archie and Lilibet on day one of Nigeria trip - best photos

The couple began their three-day trip to nigeria on friday.

HELLO!

Prince Harry received an emotional gift on Friday May 9 as he made a solo trip during the visit to Nigeria with wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

As he visited the Governor of Kaduna state, Senator Uba Sani, Harry was welcomed by dancers and a red carpet that led to the seats at the top of the steps of the governor’s office and assembly. Senator Sani praised Harry as a “symbol of courage and “praised his service to his country.” He added: "Please give our regards to the Duchess of Sussex, Princess Meghan."

Before he left, Harry was given two paintings — one of him and his late mother Princess Diana,  and another of him and wife Meghan.

Harry later visited Reference Hospital Kaduna which is Nigeria’s version of America's Walter Reed hospital — the first place service members are brought post-injury. Harry toured six wards, meeting several young men recuperating from their injuries; many had been shot, ambushed by Boko Haram or lost limbs due to blasts.

“You are going to get better, get back on your feet,” he told the first ward, meeting Corp Yusef, 23, who had been shot through the knee.

“Are you going to try for the Invictus Games team? Are you preparing for that? Don’t disappoint us," Harry joked before adding: “We will see you there.”

Harry later told Corporal Iziogo Onyema, 31, who had had his right arm reset after a gunshot: "You do get better, I promise."

Meghan shares rare details of Archie and Lilibet

Earlier in the day Meghan shared sweet updates about Prince Archie  and Princess Lilibet ,  as she and Prince Harry kicked off their three-day tour of Nigeria with a visit to a local school, supported by their Archewell Foundation.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were all smiles as they received a warm welcome at Lightway Academy in Abuja, with the couple taking time to chat with students and receiving beaded necklaces as gifts.

Harry and Meghan welcomed to Nigerian school

As they stopped at a kindergarten class, where children aged two to five danced and sung songs for them, Harry asked them: "Is singing and dancing your favourite class?"

"That’s Lili's favorite class,"  Meghan said of their two-year-old daughter. "Maybe it's all the jumping around."

The Sussexes were then taken to a STEM class where a group of youngsters showed the robot cars they’d created, with one proudly saying his was called M-Bot.

As Harry asked the class whether they enjoyed electronics,  Meghan revealed that their son Archie liked construction.

During their time at the school, Harry and Meghan helped to launch an inaugural mental health summit run by local non-profit, GEANCO, which the couple's Archewell Foundation is linked with.

Prince Harry praises mental health awareness

The Duke spoke of the importance of opening up about your mental health, telling the youngsters: "The more you talk about it, the more you can kick stigma away, fall far away into long grass, and then everybody will have the opportunity to be able to share how they're feeling, how they're coping, and then you can help other people.

Meghan talking to students

"So will you promise to us that after today, no more being scared, no more being unsure of mental health. If you are unsure, then ask. Ask your teachers. Ask your friends. Be there for one another. If you see your friend in your class not smiling, what are you gonna do? You gonna check in with them? Are you gonna ask him if they're okay? Because it's okay not to be okay."

Meghan then told the class: "We all have our story. And there's no shame in any single one of your stories. Even on the hardest days or darkest days, everything is a pillar of your strength by each of you being there.  Your teachers see that in you. And we see that in you."

Lili calls Meghan 'mama'

She added of her daughter:  "And interestingly, so our daughter, Lili, she's much, much tinier than you guys. She's about to turn three. And a few weeks ago she looked at me and she would just see the reflection in my eyes. And she said 'Mama, I see me in you'. Oh, now she was talking really, literally. But I hung onto those words in a very different way. And I thought, yes, I do see me and you, and you see me and you, but as I look around this room, I see myself in all of you as well."

For her first engagement of the trip, Meghan looked chic in a tonal tiered dress, accessorising with metallic jewellery and her brunette locks pulled back in a braided ponytail. Meanwhile Harry sported a matching stone-coloured shirt and linen trousers.

The couple have not been joined by their children, Prince Archie, who turned five on Monday, and Princess Lilibet, who turns three in June. Find out why on the latest episode of HELLO!'s A Right Royal Podcast...

LISTEN: Why Archie and Lilibet have not joined Harry and Meghan in Nigeria

This Sunday marks Mother's Day in the US, with Meghan likely to miss out on the occasion with her children, given the length of their Nigeria visit.

The three-day trip marks Harry and Meghan's first official visit to Nigeria. It comes after the Duke met Nigeria’s chief of defence staff in Germany last September at the Invictus Games in Dusseldorf.

Formal welcome

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were officially welcomed to Nigeria by Chief of Defense Staff Christopher Musa during a meeting at the Defence Headquarters in the heart of Abuja.

Harry heaped praise on the country for adopting sport as part of rehabilitation, saying: "You’re not the first country to notice that it not only transforms lives but saves lives. I'm eternally grateful to you all of you for joining the Invictus movement for Nigeria and for every single soul who’s been injured protecting the freedoms of Nigeria."

Speaking about the Nigerian Invictus Games squad, the Duke added: "The team that turned up in Düsseldorf was small but mighty. They danced their way into the stage. They won medals and danced off the stage. They were the life and soul of those games. Our goal now is to help you grow that team and provide as much opportunity and resource here in Nigeria and for the games that are coming at the beginning of next year.

"And I know there’s been an expression of interest for Nigeria to perhaps host the games in 2029."

Before departing, Harry and Meghan signed the visitors book, with the Duke remarking on his wife's "beautiful handwriting".

The Duchess, who had changed into a all-white pantsuit, chatted with some of the army wives at the Defence Headquarters.  Adenike Keennam, whose husband is in the airforce, said: "I told [Meghan] 'Welcome home'. She gave me a big smile."

She added of the couple: "I think it's significant they’re here in many ways. With people like them who you see on TV or in the papers, to see them in person goes a long way. They are people of peace."

Reunited in London

Harry and Meghan were reunited at Heathrow Airport in London on Thursday, when the Duchess of Sussex took a solo flight from Los Angeles to meet her husband at the airport's VIP Windsor Suite.

The couple subsequently boarded a British Airways flight to Abuja, where they later arrived on the invitation of the chief of defence staff.

The Duchess said during her first day of engagements that she was happy to be 'home'

Meghan wore black trousers and a brown jacket for the journey, while her husband donned a black jacket and trousers. They're thought to be staying at Transcorp Hilton in Abuja during their trip.

Harry and Meghan's first stop will be at a school before the Duke meets injured service members at a military hospital in the afternoon. They'll also attend a training session for charity organisation Nigeria: Unconquered, which collaborates with the Invictus Games, as well as a reception where military families will be honoured.

MORE OF PRINCE HARRY

Meghan is also set to co-host an event of Women in Leadership with Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the director-general of the World Trade Organisation.

On Sunday, the last day of their visit, the pair will attend a basketball camp with Giants of Africa, a cultural reception and a polo fundraiser for Nigeria: Unconquered.

The trip marks Meghan and Harry's first visit to Nigeria as a couple. The country holds a special place for them both, with Meghan having spent time with the Nigerian team at the Invictus Games last year and was even bestowed her own Nigerian name Amira Ngozi Lolo.

While "Amira" translates as warrior princess from a legend, "Ngozi" means blessed and "Lolo" symbolises royal wife.

Bobby Ojeh, the leader of the Nigerian team, told HELLO! last year: " She has the sentimental attachment to Nigeria , so it dawned on us as a team to say why don't we just give Meghan a name.

"She's wonderful, she's just wonderful. The way she embraced [her Nigerian heritage] meant a lot to us as Nigerians and this is the message we take back to Nigeria."

Harry and Meghan's Nigeria visit comes after the Duke marked the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games at St Paul's Cathedral in London on Wednesday, where he was joined by various guests including close relatives of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales.

The service at St Paul's began as King Charles met guests at the first Buckingham Palace garden party of 2024.

The father and son didn't meet during Harry's brief UK visit due to the King's "full programme", according to the Duke's spokesperson.
