Kaua'i

Hawaii - the big island, honolulu - oahu.

Though it's perhaps most famous for the fabulous coastlines of Ka'anapali Beach and Wailea Beach, Maui is a great option for both couples and families looking for variety in their vacation. Away from the sand, you can drive the Road to Hana, enjoy a bird's-eye view during a helicopter tour , see one of the world's largest dormant volcanoes at Haleakala National Park and get up close to marine wildlife while snorkeling in Honolua Bay or around Molokini. Then, for an experience you won’t forget, relax on the volcanic coastline of Wai'anapanapa State Park, where jet-black sands meet vibrant sapphire waters.

With a more easygoing environment than other islands like Oahu and the Big Island, the Garden Isle lets its wild, natural beauty speak for itself and is perfect for an adventurous getaway. The main attractions here are Koke'e State Park and Waimea Canyon, otherwise known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." But you also won’t want to miss Kaua'i’s breathtaking Wailua Falls or dreamy Po'ipu Beach. Not only does the Big Island offer white and black sand beaches , including the famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, it is also home to lush rainforests and two active volcanoes at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. History buffs will love visiting Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site (home to one of Hawaii's largest restored temples) and Kealakekua Bay (where British explorer James Cook first arrived in 1779). Dubbed The Gathering Place, Oahu is home to plenty of famous sites and a great jumping-off point for first-time visitors to the Hawaiian Islands. On the South Shore, you'll find Waikiki Beach, Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbor National Memorial and Le'ahi (Diamond Head) State Monument, all in or near the capital city of Honolulu. Meanwhile, the North Shore is home to a more laid-back vibe, as well as the renowned waves at Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach, which host major surfing competitions every year. Summer is knocking on the doors, and many cities mark the occasion by celebrating all kinds of festivals and parties – and Hawaii is no exception. Whether you want to enjoy the wonders of nature or a fun-filled beach haven, Hawaii is the perfect destination for a June vacation. This stunning string of islands has a lot in store for you in the early weeks of summer.

June Weather in Hawaii

The dictionary defines the term “perfection” as the state or condition of being free from all defects and flaws. Those who live in Hawaii, or have ever set foot here in June, would agree that the term accurately applies to the month’s weather.

June is the month when the daytime temperatures stay steady in the mid to low 80s and rain is minimal. The nights can get balmier in the low 70s, making them perfect for a romantic stroll on the beach without the need for a jacket or sweater. The ocean is warm and the water is inviting; even the water-shy folks have a hard time resisting all the fun.

Keep in mind that you may experience slightly cooler temperatures if you’re traveling to higher elevation points, like volcanoes or mountains.

Another important thing to note – although it’s not really weather-related – the daylight hours in Hawaii get really maximized in June. If you’re planning to go on a sight-seeing trip or a long hike, you’ll have more daylight hours than compared to winter months.

Average Temperatures

Daytime high temperatures usually range from 82°F to 85°F, depending on where you are on the island. Low temperatures rarely exceed 77°F or fall below 70°F.

Water Temperatures

Water temperatures on the surface stay in the low to mid 70s in the first couple of weeks, but they climb to the upper 70s and low 80s later in the last two weeks.

Ocean Conditions

Hawaii’s ocean temperatures in June are definitely good for swimming and other ocean sports. Some people do need a wetsuit, however, during scuba-diving because the deeper you go into the water, the cooler it gets. But everybody is different; some tolerate cold better than others, so we recommend talking with your diving tour or gear rental company for the best advice.

Cost to Visit Hawaii in June

The first two weeks of June offer cheaper prices for hotels and flights compared to the last two weeks. Once summer vacation season truly kicks in, hotels tend to start increasing their rates until the 4 th of July. Airfares are harder to predict, but you’re likely to see lower rates in the earlier weeks.

Surprisingly, even though June and July are considered peak travel months, they are not the most expensive for flights. Still, you can expect to pay between $750 and $1,100, depending on where you’re flying in from.

Accommodation

You’ll have three options when looking for places to stay in Hawaii: hotels, Airbnb, and hostels.

Any other peak-season time of the year, you will be hard-pressed to find a hotel room for less than $165 per night. But remember what we said before about June and perfection ? Many budget-friendly hotels offer rooms for $90-$160 per night, especially on the Big Island . Maui is the most expensive island, and the hotel rates can be double this amount. Luxury hotels obviously cost a lot more, anywhere from $250 to $580+ per night.

If you don’t want to spend this much on accommodation, consider staying at a hostel or a budget Airbnb. The average hostel costs about $35-$45 per night, while a cheap Airbnb room will come to $55-$85 per night.

Car rentals in June can get pricey. Rates usually start at $140-$150 per day for a basic four-door car, plus $8-$10/day of insurance. You’ll also need to pay for your own fuel, and that comes down to over $5 a gallon.

Best Times to Book Your June Vacation

Research shows that the best time for booking domestic flights is around 21 to 30 days in advance. June marks the beginning of summer when most families plan their annual vacation, so if you want to travel to Hawaii this month, we highly recommend booking everything at least three weeks ahead of time. 

A money-saving tip: Use Google Flights to find the cheapest flights and track prices. This is an amazing tool that filters through almost every airline and dozens of online travel agencies and then displays the lowest available price.

Is June Crowded in Hawaii?

Yes, except for the first week. June attracts waves of summer tourists, but it happens starting from the second week. You’ll see more visitors toward the end of the month as children are out of school by now. If you’re traveling in June without the kids, you may want to plan your travel within the first two weeks of June as they are the least crowded.

For those looking to attend big-time celebrations island-style, June is one of the best months to head for Hawaii. You can book your trip around King Kamehameha Day on June 11 th and get a true taste of the Hawaiian culture. The event is celebrated throughout the islands with multiple ceremonies, parades, and processions. 

Here are some other notable events happening in June:

King Kamehameha Lei Draping Ceremony: King Kamehameha was a beloved leader credited for unifying the Hawaiian Islands in 1810 after years of conflict. This ceremony takes place at Aliʻiolani Hale in downtown Honolulu and features draping a 30-feet traditional lei over the 18-foot bronze statue of King Kamehameha.

Hawaii Adaptive Surfing Championships (HASC): Nearly 100 surfers with disabilities from 15+ nations compete in the heart of Waikiki at the iconic surf break known as Queens. This is a beautiful, inspiring event where you get to see a high level of athleticism and shared love of surfing.

Summer Gift Fair: If you want to browse through unique, handmade jewelry, art, clothes, decorations, snacks, and other goodies, make your way to Ka Makana Ali’i, an open-air retail center in Kapolei. Local musicians also play throughout the fair for the added festive touch.

Beach Days Market: This is a pop-up market where local artisans, furniture makers, food vendors, clothing designers, and jewelry makers showcase their finest goods. It is usually set up in the second week of June at the Aloha Home Market. Great Waikoloa Food, Wine & Music Festival: Hawaii’s top chefs show off their culinary talents at the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island. The scrumptious food is accompanied by fine wines from around the world, fireworks, and a live music concert.

Annual Maui Film Festival: Movie lovers will love this major film festival held right under the stars at Wailea Resort. Kapalua Wine & Food Festival: Whether you are a wine connoisseur or a foodie, don’t forget to check out this event held at the Kapalua Resort. It’s usually a week-long affair that attracts master chefs and wine-makers from around the globe.

Soto Zen Bon Festival: The Japanese American community in Hawaii celebrates the best of Bon Dance culture in the most breathtaking way. More than 500 lanterns are used to decorate the Soto Zen Temple, and visitors get the rare opportunity to learn about this unique cultural tradition. There is folk dancing, traditional music, and of course, mouthwatering food.

Molokai Paniolo Heritage Festival & Workshops: Taking place at the Molokai Ranch, the festival features art exhibits, demonstrations of animal husbandry, pa’u riding workshops, and a live rodeo, among other live entertainment and food vendors. 

Water Activities 

Getting out on the water is a must in Hawaii, and you’ll be spoilt for choice for activities in the month of June:

Snorkel at the Wailea Beach or Kannapali Beach (Maui): Wailea Beach is the most popular beach in Hawaii because of the myriad of opportunities it offers in terms of bodysurfing and snorkeling. Another good spot is the 4-mile long Kaanapali Beach, especially the area around Black Rock, right in front of the Sheraton.

Bodyboarding or Bodysurfing in Oahu: The small waves of Kailua Beach , Lanikai Beach, and Waikiki Beach are good places to learn to bodyboard. You can also go to the Bellows Field Beach Park , off the Kalanianaole Highway (Hwy 72) in Waimanalo, but it’s only open to the public on weekends (unless you can show them a military ID).

Outdoor Activities

Go on a Boating Adventure: Almost every type of boat ride is available in the islands, from submarines to old-fashioned outrigger canoes. If you can afford it, we highly recommend seeing the islands from offshore; the view is unforgettable. You can combine several activities into one cruise since many snorkel boats double as sightseeing cruises.

Other Activities Worth Mentioning

See an Active Volcano: The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is often the highlight of most visitors’ experiences. You can start with the Kilauea Visitor Center, then explore your way to the Devastation Trail, Thurston Lava Tube, Halemaumau Crater, and the other sights in the crater. Talk to the park rangers about the best way to get to the lava flow. Watching sizzling-red lava in person is something you’ll remember forever.

 Is June a good time to go to Hawaii?

We always answer this question with “it depends.” If you are not particularly averse to crowds, June is an excellent month to visit Hawaii. The weather is amazing, the hotel and flight prices are cheaper – it’s a salient way to immerse yourself in the local culture on a budget.

This is not to say that June is super crowded – the first two weeks are the least crowded. But still, keep in mind that most families that plan a vacation in Hawaii, do so in June.

Another time that’s similar to visit Hawaii is in July . However, one of the best months is in September .

It’s essential to plan ahead when visiting Hawaii during any month of the year – book accommodations and activities in advance (flights often sell out), pack necessary items given possible wet weather conditions while factoring in memorial day crowds and hurricane warnings from mid-late June onward.

Jun may have an increased risk of hurricanes and tropical storms

There are numerous activities available in the Hawaiian Islands during June, including beach activities such as snorkeling and scuba diving on Maui, exploring hiking trails and visiting Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island, surfing on Oahu and more.

June marks a number of cultural celebrations throughout the islands. King Kamehameha Day takes place annually on Oahu, while Maui hosts its annual Film Festival.

Accommodations book up quickly beginning in June when summer vacation season starts up, so it’s best to book your hotel or resort rooms as soon as possible.

The best time to visit Hawaii for good weather, smaller crowds, deals and more

So you want to visit Hawaii? Understandable — it's a great place.

However, unless you're booking a spontaneous flight deal (and those do happen), you'll probably want to plan to ensure you're traveling at the best time for your particular dream trip.

Whether you're looking for dry, idyllic weather, perfect whale watching season, or the cheapest time to book a Hawaiian hotel room, consider this your definitive guide to planning a perfect trip to Hawaii.

The best time to visit Hawaii for good weather

Generally, the best weather in Hawaii is in June, July and September. This is when travelers can expect the least amount of rain along with warmer water temperatures.

However, Hawaii isn't a true four seasons state and it has pretty great weather year-round. So if traveling during June, July or September isn't in the cards, you're still probably fine as there's really no bad time to go. I just got back from a trip in mid-November and the weather was great. It was warm enough to swim in the ocean without being too hot lying in the sun.

Hawaii has a tropical climate, with temperatures generally staying between 83 and 88 degrees all year long.

You should check local weather, though, as conditions in some parts of the Islands are wetter than others depending on if you are staying on the windward or leeward sides of each island.

Kauai, for instance, gets a lot of rain on the northern side of the island compared to the southern side (which does lead to some pretty great rainbows). Even if the forecast calls for rain, however, the rain tends to come in short bursts and doesn't last long.

Best time to visit Hawaii to avoid crowds

The peak tourism season in Hawaii typically starts in the middle of December and continues until the end of March or mid-April, depending on the timing of spring break for major parts of the U.S.

The less busy season stretches from the middle of April until mid-June, when most schools are out of the summer and then resumes from September until crowds tick up before the holidays. Shoulder season is a great time to visit. The huge crowds are gone, prices are lower and you can have more of the beach to yourself. Even in busy spots like Honolulu, you'll have more breathing room after Labor Day and before Thanksgiving.

July and August, while not considered Hawaii's busiest season, still tend to draw decent crowds — and are especially popular with vacationing families.

Cheapest months to visit Hawaii

Traveling to Hawaii is usually priciest during peak season, so if you want to save, wait until the off-peak or shoulder seasons.

The shoulder seasons in Hawaii run from late March through the beginning of May, and from September until Thanksgiving. However, spring break and the beginning of September can yield high traffic and higher prices, too, so look carefully before booking.

Historical data from the travel booking site Skyscanner shows airfare is at its most expensive during the winter, specifically in January. At this time of year, average long-haul flight prices can exceed $1,400.

However, prices can plummet during the shoulder seasons or times that cushion peak periods, such as late November and early March. This past September, we saw a fare war develop with prices as low as $62 one-way to Hawaii. This is especially true if you are coming from the western half of the U.S. Keep an eye on TPG deal alerts , where we regularly cover sales to Hawaii.

We looked at historical data, and generally, the most expensive month for a room in Honolulu is January, with the least expensive month being April. Analysts tell TPG it's best to book as early as possible for the best rates in the off-season. We're told that many tourists are booking as close in as a week before arrival, and the best deals will be had as far out as possible. It pays to plan ahead.

Of course, you may have more flexibility when you cash in your points and miles — though hotel award rates tend to shift with peak and off-peak seasons, too. Also, award flight availability is often directly tied to demand.

Best time to travel to Hawaii to surf

Only four of the islands in the Hawaiian archipelago are suitable for surfing year-round: Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. As for when and where you'd like to surf, well, that depends entirely on your skill level.

The waves follow a somewhat consistent schedule. In the winter, for example, surfers can find serious swells off an island's north coast, while the south coast experiences calmer seas. During the summer, the opposite is true.

So, for advanced surfers, the winter season, or ho'oilo, which runs from mid-November to early February, is when you should look out for big wave surfing competitions on the North Shore of Oahu, also known as the "Seven Mile Miracle."

On the Big Island, surf enthusiasts should check out La'aloa Bay and Honoli'i Beach Park.

For novice surfers, you'll want to spend more time on the island's southern coasts in the winter. In Maui, beaches in Kaanapali, Lahaina and Kihei deliver just-right waves for beginners to get their feet wet.

Best time for whale watching in Hawaii

The best time to go whale watching

Whales migrate to Hawaii in pods of roughly 1,000 between late December and early April, making Maui and the Kohala Coast of the Big Island two of the best places on Earth to spot the giants. Note that sometimes whales show up as early as November, so you could get lucky if you travel during shoulder season.

The best time to see turtles

If you're interested in spotting Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu), they're plentiful year-round in Maui, on the Big Island of Hawaii, Kaui and on Oahu. One of the most famous spots for turtle-spotting is on Ho'okipa Beach in Maui.

Visit in the summer, during nesting season, to increase your odds. You'll even find sea turtles on some hotel grounds. I was able to get up close and personal with turtles on a trip to the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island. At that hotel, they hang out in the hotel's lagoon.

Many vendors sell turtle snorkeling adventures and I've had great luck with two separate snorkeling trips in Hawaii.

A warning, though: please don't get too close. People are asked to give the turtles at least ten feet of space and never touch them. Human touch can spread bacteria to turtles, which can lead to starvation for the creature. Remember that green sea turtles are listed as an endangered species.

Hawaii has five of the seven species of sea turtles in the world, but green sea turtles are the most common.

When to visit Hawaii for events

Summer events.

In the summer, on the third weekend of July, visitors can attend the Prince Lot Hula Festival, Hawaii's largest non-competitive hula event.

Fall events

The Hawaii Food & Wine Festival is a major draw for foodies, featuring an extensive lineup of dinners, parties, cooking classes and more taking place in October and November of 2024 on three different islands – Hawaii, Maui and Oahu.

In September, travelers can attend the Aloha Festivals in Waikiki, which feature arts and crafts, food and performance stages. Don't forget the floral parade.

Winter events

This is prime season for surfing competitions, including the Vans Triple Crown of surfing on the North Shore of Oahu.

Spring events

Heading to Hawaii in the springtime? Consider the Honolulu Festival in March or the Lantern Floating Festival, held on Memorial Day yearly in Ala Moana Beach Park in Honolulu.

Worst time to visit Hawaii?

This is kind of a trick question, as there is really no bad time to visit Hawaii. You'll find warm weather and sunshine most of the year. Even when it does rain, it is often just for a few minutes.

That said, some locals say December is the worst time of the year because of the extra crowds, extra costs, and the increased rain shower odds. But even with all that, I'd trade Northeast winter weather for that any time of the year.

Hawaii in June seems like the best time to visit Hawaii. Summer is at its peak, the kids are on summer break, and the weather in Hawaii in June feels perfect for those summer days on the beach. Hawaii’s rainy season is long gone and the cooler autumn and summer days are nowhere in sight.

But I like to stay truthful to my readers so I’ve listed both the positives and negatives of what Hawaii in June is really like. By the end of this post, you’ll know if June is the best time for you to visit Hawaii.

June weather and temperature

Hawaii in June weather is a wonderful time for a trip to the islands. In terms of sunshine, the month of June in Hawaii gets 13.5 hours of daylight – the most you’ll ever get in Hawaii (tied with July). Just based on temperature, Hawaii in June makes it one of the best times to visit Hawaii. The temperature in June is reliably hot every day and the humidity levels tend to stay low so you won’t feel icky and sweat buckets when you step outside. The trade winds kick in and feels great on your skin even on those extra hot days.

Oahu : Oahu in June is comfortable summer weather at an average high of 83 F, low of 69 F, with only an estimated 3 days of rain. June is also a month with one of lowest amount of rainfall at only 0.6 inches, so you can expect a visit to Oahu to be all clear skies and sunshine. It’s a great time for some shady forest hikes or early morning hikes to avoid getting sunburned. But every day will be a perfect beach day so if you want to spend a lot of time on Oahu’s beaches, Hawaii in June is perfect.

Maui : Maui clocks in a little cooler than Oahu with an average high of 76 F, low of 59 F, but only 2 days of rain (0.9 inches), the lowest you’ll get in Maui. While the weather will be great, keep in mind that all of Maui’s waterfalls on the Road to Hana will shrink to a trickle. So if waterfalls in Maui are big on your to-do list, consider a different month where there’s more rain.

Big Island (Kona): Kona during the summer is very stable. The temperature hovers at a high of 85 F, low of 72 F, differing only by a degree or two from month to month. Kona is also known for being hot and dry, so there’s only an average of 2 days of rain (0.5 inches) in Kona in June.

Big Island (Hilo): Hilo on the other hand has a high of 83 F, low of 68 F, making it very comfortable as you won’t be burning up as you walk around and explore. While June in Hilo has an average of 19 days of rain at 6.8 inches, keep in mind that this is by far the least amount of rain Hilo will ever get throughout the year. (The highest is November at 14.6 inches). Rain is normal in Hilo, which keeps everything fresh and green on this side of the island.

Kauai : Kauai is significantly cooler than the rest of the islands with a high of 74 F, low of 60 F. Like Hilo, Kauai is known for being wet in certain areas (which makes it a spectacular place for outdoorsy activities such as hiking) and while June in Kauai has 6.7 inches of rain (21 days), this is the lowest rainfall amount compared to Kauai during the rest of the year.

Molokai : Molokai’s temperatures are great with a high of 81 F, low of 68 F, and only 2 days of rain at 0.5 inches – the lowest compared to the rest of the year in Molokai.

Lanai : The good weather in Lanai in June extends into July with an average high of 78 F, low of 65 F, and 3 days of rain at only 1.1 inches.

Hurricane season

The biggest reason why I think you have to really consider traveling to Hawaii in June is our hurricane season. June 1 to November 30 is officially hurricane season and our local news stations constantly report on tropical storms that form and start towards Hawaii.

Usually traveling to Hawaii in June during hurricane season is not a problem. We get a few bad tropical storms during this 6-month period, which brings heavy wind and rain, and if we’re lucky these storms don’t form into hurricanes and cause havok.

A few things you should consider when visiting Hawaii in June in hurricane season is:

• You’ll know about a week in advance if a tropical storm/hurricane is on its way towards Hawaii.
• We won’t know for sure if it will hit us about 3 days in advance (as the storm gets closer, the path becomes more definite).
• Tropical storms can suddenly become a hurricane, or seemingly disappear into nothing and leave behind a normal, sunny day.
• It depends on your airlines and your ticket, but most will allow you to at least change your fly dates in advance due to the pending storm.

Should you avoid traveling to Hawaii in June because of hurricane season?

In my opinion, no. Don’t let hurricane season in Hawaii scare you off. More often than not, tropical storms either fade away, veer off, go slightly off course, or don’t even turn into hurricanes and just bring a lot of wind and rain over. To do their worst, hurricanes need to form, stay on trajectory toward Hawaii, uphold their hurricane status, and directly hit Hawaii – this is all decided by nature and can’t be predicted.

Aside from the few storms and hurricanes that do hit us (both directly or indirectly), Hawaii in June is pretty perfect. You really can’t complain since the usual weather and temperature is fantastic.

Local Tip: One place you don’t want to be during a hurricane is near the beach. Keep an eye on tropical storms and hurricanes headed toward Hawaii so you can make a change to your accommodation if necessary. Hotels on Waikiki Beach are fine.

• Hawaii News Now Hurricane Center monitors and keeps the entire state updated.
• Maui’s Hurricane Tracker .
• Big Island’s Hurricane Tracker .
• Note: All of these will track tropical storms headed towards every Hawaiian Island (including Lanai, Molokai, and Kauai).

Humpback Whales Don’t Visit Hawaii In June

Whale watching season runs from November thru April, which makes Hawaii in June one of the worst times to visit Hawaii. The humpback whales breach, spout, and play and you can see them from the shore or get even closer on a whale watch boat tour .

The humpback whales come during the winter months to mate, give birth, and raise their young. It’s really neat to be able to look out to the ocean and actually be able to count the whales as you spot them in the distance.

What’s the ocean like?

Hawaii in June generally means very little waves. With the exception of a tropical storm or hurricane near the islands, you can expect calm beach days perfect for any age across the state.

With less waves and rain, there’s a better chance for good visibility in the water – an important factor if you want to see farther and more fish in the water.

Surfing competitions

Hawaii in winter means waves; however, Hawaii in June means no waves. You won’t find any of those big wave surfing tournaments in June. However, on the flip side, no waves means more snorkeling spots in Hawaii will open up. With the absence of big waves hitting the North Shores of Hawaii, you’ll have more snorkeling opportunities.

Don’t let visiting Hawaii in June stop you from taking a surfing lesson though. Surfing lessons will get you started on 1-foot to 3-foot waves, which can be found all over the island except on those rare windless days (which doesn’t happen often in June).

Hawaii in June is great for snorkelers, especially for beginners who need some practice in the water with their fins, mask, and snorkel. Snorkeling spots all around Oahu are often naturally protected and Hawaii in June brings calmer waters island-wide.

If you have young children or a beginner snorkeler, head out to Hanauma Bay or Kuilima Cove (Turtle Bay Resort) first. These two snorkeling spots are great and they’ll learn quickly. Intermediate and advanced snorkelers will want to try to snorkel at Electric Beach (Kahe Point) or at Shark’s Cove.

Kids at the beach

The best part of Hawaii in June that will convince you to visit Hawaii is that the flat summer waves are very suitable for kids of any age. Even the North Shore of Oahu (which turns into a surfing hub in the winter) is calm and peaceful.

It’s the perfect time for them to practice their swimming, play in the gentle waves, surf on baby waves, and learn to snorkel and breathe properly underwater.

Hawaii in June Means Summer Break for kids

In terms of convenience, June is often the best time to go to Hawaii if you have kids in school. Summer break gives the whole family a chance to travel to Hawaii together and you can rest easy knowing that the beaches and waves won’t be rough.

Everyday is predictably hot and sunny, making it great weather to go outside. But with more kids out and about, keep in mind that many of the family-friendly beaches, hikes, and attractions will be a tad more crowded. Don’t forget that the local kids are also on summer break, too.

Local tip: It’s not just elementary, intermediate, and high school students you have to worry about during summer break. All of the University of Hawaii students are released for summer from May to July (we have 16 institutions).

On a positive note, when UH students are on summer break, the morning and afternoon traffic on Oahu improves noticeably. More students are sleeping in or staying home instead of sitting in traffic trying to get to their morning class.

Festivals and events in June

Hawaii in June marks the beginning of summer, which means there are a ton of festivals and events to look forward to. The big annual events that usually happen in Hawaii in June are:

Oahu events

• 50th State Fair : This family event begins late May and runs for about a month into June. There are all kinds of food booths (both carnival and local food), rides, and live entertainment. I try to attend at least once a year
• Pan-Pacific Festival : A 3-day cultural celebration held in Waikiki that features music, food, artists, and entertainment to promote international friendship – this is a great multicultural event that represents the melting pot that is Hawaii.
• Mango Jam Honolulu : Besides being all about mango, this free festival also showcases “a taste of island culture” through live entertainment, culinary booths, free activities, and local agriculture.
• Kamehameha Day Parade : An annual celebration of King Kamehameha I, who united the islands of Hawaii into the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Local tip: Kamehameha Day celebrations happen statewide so check to see what kind of festivities are being organized for the island you’re headed to.

Maui events

• Kapalua Wine & Food Festival : Eat, drink, and have a lovely time with the culinary world in Maui.
• Maui Film Festival : If you love movies, you’ll love the Maui Film Festival at Wailea. June has perfect weather for watching movies outside under the stars!
• Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival : Run by the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, this unique music festival features the local musicians and the unique finger-picking style when playing the guitar.

Big Island events

• Big Island Jazz and Blues Festival : Held at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, this music festival features virtuosos, grammy winners, and world-famous musicians.
• Kona Marathons : No matter how much exercise you do (or don’t do), you’ll find a marathon length that you’ll be ok with.
• Hawaii Performing Arts Festival : Talented young musicians from all over the world come to study, learn, and perform with the world’s best teachers, mentors, and performers. You can even sponsor an artist!

How to save money when you travel to Hawaii in June

The beginning of June is the best time to go to Hawaii. Besides the great weather in Hawaii in June, you’re beating the summer break crowd that will start flowing in starting mid-June. The best part is that tickets to Hawaii tend to be a little cheaper around this time. But you can expect prices to go back up as kids get released from school.

When you think of the perfect getaway to Hawaii, you probably think of white sandy beaches, crystal clear water, and the sun shining down on you. At least, that’s what most people crave when they book their trip to this beautiful state. 

If you’re considering a family trip to Hawaii , finding the best time of year to go will set the tone for your entire vacation. Since most people love planning summer trips, is June a good time to go to Hawaii?

Before booking your flights and getting everyone excited, let’s dive into what to expect when visiting Hawaii in June.

Hawaii Average Temperatures in June

First things first, you need to consider what the weather is like in Hawaii in the month of June. Regarding average temperatures, June is one of the best months to visit Hawaii. It’s warm during the day and at night. While the temperatures cool down, they’re still warm and comfortable.

Generally, the average temperature highs in Hawaii in June are in the mid to low 80s. This temperature makes it perfect beach weather! Nighttime temperatures reach the mid to low 70s, which is still warm but not suffocatingly hot when the sun goes down. Sometimes, they can even dip down into the mid to high 60s.  

As with other states, the average temperatures will vary slightly depending on where you go in Hawaii in June. Here are the average daytime and nighttime temperatures across the seven major Hawaiian islands in June: 

• Oahu: a high of 85°F and a low of 74°F
• Kauai: a high of 82°F and a low of 74°F
• Hawaii, The Big Island: a high of 85°F and a low of 74°F
• Lanai: a high of 79°F and a low of 65°F
• Maui: a high of 86°F and a low of 72°F
• Molokai: a high of 77°F and a low of 64°F

Regardless of which island you plan on spending your Hawaiian getaway on, you can expect comfortably warm temperatures and fantastic beach weather. Keep in mind that depending on which cities and areas you visit on these islands, the temperature might vary slightly from the above averages.

Since you’ll be spending a lot of time in Hawaii at one of the several world-famous beaches or doing other outdoor activities, understanding the UX index is essential. Whether you’re age five or seventy-five, protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays is crucial. 

Even though June is considered one of the warmest months in Hawaii, the average UV index is six. This means there’s a high chance of exposure to harmful UV rays. You’ll want to apply sunscreen regularly when you’re outside or at the beach because nothing can put a damper on your vacation like a bad sunburn.

Just like with the average temperatures, just because the average UV index is six doesn’t mean it can’t be higher on some days or in some areas of the state. Check your weather app or another source before venturing outside to ensure you and your family are prepared.

The next thing to consider when planning a trip to Hawaii in June is how rainy the month is. While most tropical environments see a lot of rain in the summer months, including June, this is surprisingly one of the driest months in Hawaii. 

While rain can happen in Hawaii during June, it’s less likely than in the winter. It’s much easier to plan outdoor activities with minimal rain, making visiting Hawaii in June a great choice. You can spend much more time outside without worrying about rain or dark clouds blocking the sun. Here are the rainfall averages across the major seven Hawaiian islands in June: 

• Oahu: 0.4 inches
• Kauai: one inch
• Hawaii, The Big Island : 2.4 inches
• Lanai: 0.4 inches
• Maui: 0.3 inches
• Molokai: 0.4 inches

The one thing you need to be aware of when visiting Hawaii in June is the Pacific Hurricane Season . While rainfall averages are very low in Hawaii, when tropical storms and hurricanes strike, you’ll see the rainfall increase. 

Not only will you see a lot more rain, but these tropical systems can bring strong winds and be pretty scary if you’re not used to them. Even with stronger storms, they can be nerve-wracking even if you have experience with them.

Hurricane season in Hawaii runs from June 1st through November 30th. Since June is the beginning of the season, it’s less likely that there will be any severe storms. They usually occur closer to the end of the season. Tropical systems can form any time of the year in the Pacific, but it’s most likely during hurricane season.

Luckily, Hawaii rarely gets hit by tropical storms and hurricanes in June, so they shouldn’t play that huge of a role in your decision to go to Hawaii during this month. Even if there are storms, we can easily track these storms so you can better plan when you’ll visit.

Since you’ll likely be spending much of your time at the beach or participating in watersports, knowing what to expect from the ocean is important. Ocean temperatures are comfortable for most people, with averages around the mid to low 70s at the beginning of the month. 

As June progresses, the ocean temperatures will rise and even reach the high 70s and low 80s. This rise in temperature is more than comfortable for most people and is the perfect temperature to cool off in when the sun starts to feel too hot.

If you’re considering scuba diving, surfing, or participating in other water activities that bring you out to deeper waters, you might need a wetsuit to keep you comfortable. When you book a scuba diving excursion, be sure to speak with your instructor beforehand to determine if you’ll need a wetsuit or not.

Knowing they’re safe in the water is important when traveling with kids. Even for the strongest swimmers, the ocean can be a dangerous place. Luckily, June usually brings calmer ocean waters to Hawaii. 

The peak tourist season in Hawaii is from December to April, but that doesn’t mean Hawaii doesn’t see a lot of tourism in June. When there are more visitors, it means crowded beaches, longer lines at restaurants, and longer wait times for various activities. 

Hawaii sees over nine million visitors annually, and that number is climbing again with COVID-19 restrictions being lifted. Some islands are more popular with visitors than others.

Oahu and Maui are two of the most visited islands in the state and therefore see the most visitors. On average, one million or a little less than one million visitors head to Hawaii in June.

The first few weeks of June are relatively calm regarding tourism in Hawaii, but the latter half of the month sees an increase in visitors. Even with a rise in visitors, June is still a reasonably calm time to visit when considering other tourists.

As the month progresses, you’ll see the prices for hotels, vacation rentals, and other things begin to rise. So, if you want the best deals for visiting Hawaii in June, it’s best to look at the first week or two. 

Flights to and from Hawaii can be costly no matter where you live. With airfares constantly rising and falling, it’s hard to pinpoint how much your flights will cost. With it being a calmer time of year for tourists, flight prices should be lower to entice more people to visit, just like with lower hotel prices. 

Even activities around the islands tend to be more affordable in June than in the peak tourist season. Not everyone needs to rent a car when traveling to Hawaii, but it does make it easier to get around the islands if you want to explore more than just the area you’re staying in.

Rental car costs are high in Hawaii but tend to be lower in June. While it’s hard to estimate the gas prices each month, they’re averaging around $5.6 per gallon for regular.

I'd love to go to Kauai and do a helicopter ride to see the Na Poli coast, as well as a boat/snorkel ride, but I am afraid of the rain. It rained for all but one day for our one year anniversary in the Caribbean and we really don't want to experience that again.

Maui looks gorgeous, but I didn't know if it was too commercialized.

Finally, our budget is around $6000 for 11 days including two days of travel time, so we're looking into locations that are around $200 - $250/night. We'd be interested in maybe doing a nicer resort for half, and then a cheaper condo for the second half if you guys have any recommendations.

Your best flight option is probably a nonstop on a widebody aircraft JFK or Newark into HNL. Then you'd board Hawaiian Airlines to 'your island'. I avoid 757's. (Worse would be two of them.)

I think you'd enjoy Big Island. You may want to fly into KOA and out of ITO, staying both Volcano and Kohala Coast.

Unless you eat your dessert first, you may want to save the posh hotel for last.

No swimming with (harassing) the dolphins, please. (See right margin on this page for why.)

Don't count travel days. Don't count Day One in Hawaii as much more than Adjusting To Time Change Day.

Decide on your island and get your rental car reserved NOW.

I wish you had a good 2 weeks, you could see both the Big Island and Kauai - I think you would enjoy both of those islands from what it sounds like . . . you could see the Big Island with 11 days, but not both islands. Perhaps add a few days - spend 8 on the Big island and 5 on Kauai - that could be doable. :)

+ All of the Islands have developed areas - but overall, it sounds like you want the Big Island or Kauai. You will spend alot of time in the car on the Big Island, and if you want to explore the whole Island ... you will need to change accommodations as well. Note that there are two airports on the Big Island.

+ Please look to the right-hand side of this screen under "Top Questions" and read about why you should not swim with dolphins.

+ There is only one active volcano, Kilauea, on the Big Island. Maui has a massive dormant volcano - and there are vestiges of volcanoes on all the major Islands. Note that your odds of seeing flowing lava are slim.

+ We've been to rainforests in Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, and Ecuador>> This will not help you in Hawaii.

+ You need to extract the cost of your flights from you budget. Then what you have left is for accommodations, cars , food, activities ...

+ We recommend "Hawaii for Dummies" - a great travel guidebook that covers all the Islands. And make sure that you have good maps as well.

Swimming with dolphins is frowned upon by most on this forum, and a lot of residents of the state. Do check out the Top Questions on the right hand side of this page for more info on this very sensitive subject. You can't see them on most mobile devices.

Also, I had no idea about the dolphins! I just saw that there were snorkeling trips to swim with them so I figured it was okay. I'll make sure to respect their sleep!

Whichever island you choose, I would stay at the nicer resort last, not first.

The Big Island has the best snorkeling in the State, followed by Maui, then Oahu , then Kauai with the poorest snorkeling.

The Big Island is probably the quietest/ least crowded of the four major islands in late June. It has fewer beaches than Maui and Kauai and the beaches tend to be smaller, but there are some beautiful and uncrowded, quiet beaches with great snorkeling from the shore.

Maui will have lots of good, and pretty snorkeling and swimming beaches to choose from, but in general it is more built up and will probably be more crowded than either Kauai or the Big Island (not to say that there aren't less developed areas in Maui, but just in general terms, Kauai and the Big Island don't tend to be quite as built up).

Kauai is really gorgeous and has some of the prettiest scenery I've ever seen along the Na Pali coast, and Hanalei Bay on Kauai is my favorite beach in the World. It should be really nice weather in June, so I really wouldn't worry about rain (it might rain for a little bit, but you're not likely to have it rain every day or for days on end...I've also had Caribbean vacations in May and June rained out, but Hawaii's weather pattern is much different than the Caribbean). However, if you are big time snorkelers, the snorkeling may disappoint some on Kauai (although for many people including myself the snorkeling is still enjoyable, just not amazing). I think you could easily fill up your 11 days on Kauai too by splitting your time between the North and South shores.

I think you should look into some trip reports (blogs) with pictures of each of the different islands to help you decide. I know both the Kauai forums and the Big Island forum (Island of Hawaii forum) have links in their top questions (to the right of the page) to pictures or photo-centric trip reports. For Maui, I'm not sure, but you can always do a search on the Maui forum for trip reports with pictures or trip report blogs.

+ Go as early in June as you can.

+ Again, count your nights, not your days.

+ Best beaches of the three ... I'd opt for Maui - but it's a close call!

+ From you comments, I would definitely put Kauai on the list ... and drop the notion of perpetual rain. Remember than rain doesn't mean cold! Hawaii is renown for micro-climates - so stay away from The Weather Channel. Poipu is the area of Kauai that you should consider.

+ SO you can 1) spend your entire time on any of these Islands - no problem. For the Big Island, give yourself at least 7 nights! 2) split your trip between Kauai and Maui or 3) split your trip between part of the Big Island and Maui or Kauai.

A lot of folks say Maui no ka oi which means "Maui is the best." Whether or not your scorecard shows this, Maui is a fine location for almost all visitors to the islands. It's the middle ground between the big city on Oahu and the country life of Kauai and the Big Island. A lot of folks choose Maui as their honeymoon destination, and many love the large selection of condos available here.

The Hana Highway is one of the world's premier driving attractions and Haleakala, one of Hawaii's National Parks, is an incredible place to visit. And everyone from golfers to windsurfers will find plenty of adventure on Maui. Maui's nickname is the "Valley Isle," and when you arrive, you'll see why. Hawaii's Big Island

If the Big Island topped your list, we don't blame you. It's our favorite, too- and for good reason. The Big Island is by far the most diverse of all the Hawaiian Islands, and it's BIG. In fact, it's the size of all the other islands COMBINED! From barren grasslands to lush jungle, and from lava fields to snow-capped mountains - it's all here. Plus, it's the only island where you can literally walk on land younger than you are!

The Big Island offers a solid selection of world-class resorts on the Kohala (Gold) Coast, condos all around the island, and excellent B&Bs in both Kona and near the Volcano area. The Volcano area is a great place for birdwatching, too. The Big Island also is bustling with activities- from hiking to a recent lava flow or riding horseback in the gorgeous Waipio Valley. If you like all things green, like seclusion, and love to hike - OK, if you're into nature... welcome home! Kauai offers up pure paradise to anyone who loves the great outdoors. Kauai is the oldest of the major Hawaiian Islands and has certainly earned its nickname of the "Garden Isle." Beautiful flora and fauna abound around the island. As the oldest Hawaiian Island, Kauai is also home to some of the world’s best beaches.

But what really sets Kauai apart is that the bulk of it can't be reached by car. That means grab your hiking pole and hit the trails! Kauai offers what we believe are the best hiking trails in Hawaii; from the beautiful coastal Kalalau trail on the NaPali coast to a hike inland to see Waialeale's "weeping wall," you can't beat the hiking on Kauai. The Garden Isle is also home to Waimea Canyon, which Mark Twain called the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." Kauai is definitely a more romantic island, as well. The only downside for many is the weather, as all things green means lots of rain. But don't let that worry you- Kauai is an incredible island to visit; our personal second favorite in the chain. June’s weather is usually quite pleasant. Daytime high temperature average in the low to mid 80s F. Nighttime temperatures only dip into the lower 70s F. On average June is the month for the least  rainfall levels. Overall, June typically offers some of the best weather of the year for Hawaii.

Here are the average rainfall levels by island for the month of June:

Kauai – 1.61 inches – This measurement is based on Lihue’s averages per Weather.com. Lihue is located on the southeastern side of the island and is not as wet as the North Shore, but not quite as dry as the South Shore.

Oahu – 0.46 inches – This average is based on Honolulu’s rainfall per Weather.com. North Shore rainfall will be a little higher, while Ko Olina’s rainfall will be slightly lower.

Maui – 0.20 inches – This average is based on Kahului’s rainfall per Weather.com. Kahului is where Maui’s main airport is, but it’s not typically considered a resort area like Wailea, Lahaina, Kaanapali and Kapalua. Kahului’s rainfall tends to be a bit higher than all the resort areas, with the exception of Hana on east Maui.

Hawaii, the Big Island – 0.42 inches – This average is based on Kailua-Kona’s weather per Weather.com. Kailua-Kona is a popular resort area. Further north on the Kohala Coast, the weather tends to be even drier with only about 10 – 12 inches of rain for the entire  year ! Hilo, on the east side of Hawaii Island, is another story though, with an average of 7.37 inches of rainfall for June per Weather.com.

Lanai – 1.61 inches – This average is for Lanai City in Lanai’s upcountry/highlands, which tends to get  much more  rain that the island’s sunny, beach resort at Manele Bay. Data sourced from Weather.com.

Molokai – 0.63 inches – This average, per Weather.com, is for the airport just west of Kaunakakai town. Weather towards the east side will be rainier.

Though not necessarily weather-related, it’s worth mentioning that daylight hours are practically maximized in June and July. If you are planning long hikes or sight-seeing trips, you’ll have more daylight hours than compared months around winter. 

Is June a crowded time to visit Hawaii?

With summer vacations starting in June, this month is starting to be one of the busier months of the year — not the busiest, but higher than average per our analysis of Hawaii visitor arrival data . For June, the arrivals are low/average a the beginning of the month. After schools in the USA complete their school year in June, family vacations to Hawaii begin. So, arrivals increase during the second half of the month. The following chart shows visitor arrivals per month with the average annual arrival line indicated.

We have been to Hawaii in early and late June on Oahu, Maui, Molokai and Hawaii, the Big Island. Even with June visitors arrivals being a bit above average, we never felt like the islands were crowded.

Is June an expensive time to go to Hawaii?

Per Hawaii hotel cost trends , overall June accommodation rates are at average as you can see from the below chart. Then, as more folks are starting their summer vacations as the month progresses, rates increase along with the demand. Likewise, the better airfare rates are typically found earlier in the month.

From earlier data that we analyzed , which had weekly detail rather than monthly detail, we were able to see the hotel rate trend from being slightly below average at the beginning of June to exceeding average at the end of June. So, the earlier you go in June, the cheaper the rates.

Are there any special festivals or reasons to visit Hawaii in June?

King Kamehameha Day is celebrated as a  state holiday throughout Hawaii on June 11th. You might find parades or other celebration in Hawaii on this day.

The major Hawaii festivals typically held in June are as follows:

• Oahu –   Pan-Pacific Festival
• Maui –   Kapalua Wine & Food Festival  are Maui’s top two festivals in June.

Hi, thinking of visiting Hawaii in June and was wondering if this was a good time for a beginner surfer and if so what would be the best beaches to stay at for a beginner surfer?

We’re not surfers, so unfortunately, we can’t advise on that topic. Just from observation, it seems like the surf at Waikiki Beach is fairly gentle for surfing and there are instructors offering lessons there.

As for other kid-friendly activities — there are fun hikes to great scenery. Going to a luau is fun for all ages. Snorkeling tours are amazing. Some islands have aquariums that are really neat to see. Those are just a few ideas…I’m sure you’ll discover more.

Hi – we are planning a last minute first visit to Honolulu. However, we are bit scared as the accuweather site says that its suppose to be quite windy from june 16 onwards. Is this normal for Honoluly around this time? Also, is the ocean warm enough?

This stunning beach is a scuba diver’s dream. Fringed by Ironwood and Palm trees, you are sure to enjoy the beauty this golden sand beach has to offer.

With the mountains and the lush jungle acting as a backdrop, Tunnels Beach is picture-perfect. 

This beach is a great place to participate in watersports and more. You can go windsurfing, surging, and kite surfing. There are also lava tubes here that form some amazing underwater caverns to explore. 

Tunnels Beach is located on the North Shore , making it a spectacular place to view a beautiful sunset. 

6. Kilauea Lighthouse

Located inside a wildlife refuge, this lighthouse is a great place to visit. Especially if you like birds. 

Bring along your binoculars and you can spot several species of birds from the lighthouse. There are brown boobies, red-footed boobies, white-tailed tropicbirds and so many more. 

The lighthouse was erected in 1912 and was built to help with the navigation of ships and some of the very first flights to Kauai. Admire the beauty and history the Kilauea Lighthouse has to offer. 

7. Spouting Horn Blowhole

Located on the South Shore of Kauai, the Spouting Horn Blowhole is one of the most photographed spots on the island. 

This stunning blowhole shoots water spray up to a staggering 50 feet into the air. It is a great place to watch the sunrise and get wonderful photographs. You can even hear the water as it makes its way through the blowhole. 

8. Shipwreck Beach 

This amazing beach is a great place to go beachcombing or take in a sunset. Located in front of the Grand Hyatt Resort and spa, you are going to want to visit Shipwreck Beach. 

Many of the Kauai locals visit this beach for surfing, bodyboarding and more. If you are experienced with watersports, this is a great beach for you. 

Keep in mind that the water here can be rather rough and choppy. This beach can be an extremely dangerous spot to take a dip.

If you aren’t an avid swimmer experienced with watersports, it’s best to visit for the sunset or to do some beachcombing. 

9. Allerton-McBryde Botanical Gardens

Located side by side, these gorgeous tropical gardens are a must-visit on Kauai’s South Shore. Providing stunning scenic views and over 350 acres to explore, you are sure to enjoy this fun attraction in Kauai. 

Stroll through a bamboo forest and visit the outdoor rooms complete with rippling pools and fountains with a tour guide.

These guided tours will also teach you about amazing Hawaiian fruits like noni fruit. You will also see plants that were brought to Kauai by early Polynesians, called Canoe Plants. 

At the Allerton-McBryde Botanical Gardens , you will also see Moreton Bay Fig Trees. This species of tree was featured in Jurassic Park.

As the most populated and visited island in Hawaii, Oahu is the heart of Hawaii’s tourism industry. With the perfect mix of history, culture, and beautiful landscapes, this island truly has something for every type of traveler. 

Most of the action happens in Honolulu – the capital of Oahu as well as the state of Hawaii. It’s here where you’ll find the bustling neighborhood of Waikiki . Backed by Diamond Head and the golden sands of the iconic Waikiki Beach, this cosmopolitan area is filled with high-end hotels, delicious dining options, and lively entertainment venues. 

But there’s much more to Oahu than Waikiki. Head to the north of the island, and you’ll reach the North Shore , which is world-famous for its impressive surf and laid-back atmosphere. 

You can also head to the west to the resort community of Ko Olina , which is much quieter and less crowded compared to Waikiki. This area is known for its swimmable lagoons, luxury resorts (like Disney’s Aulani ), and pristine golf courses.

Maui in a Nutshell:

When most people think of Hawaii, they probably envision something that looks a bit like Maui. Although it’s the second-most visited island in the state, it still manages to retain a laid-back tropical vibe that creates the perfect setting for a relaxing getaway. The Valley Isle is made up of two volcanoes: Haleakala and the West Maui Mountains, with a valley in between connecting the two.

The beaches on Maui are superb , with soft golden sands, clear blue waters, and gently swaying palm trees. For this reason, it’s a great destination for swimmers and snorkelers. Not only can you explore the underwater world directly from shore, but you’ll also be just a short boat ride away from Molokini Crater , which is considered to be one of the best snorkeling destinations in Hawaii.

And if you’re visiting from December to March, you’ll get to see humpback whales! Every year, more than 10,000 of these creatures make their way south from Alaska, and Maui has the most whale sightings during the whale watching season.

While Lahaina suffered a devastating fire in August 2023, the rest of Maui and the west side are open to visitors. Lahaina is and will be closed for the foreseeable future.

Big Island in a Nutshell:

The Island of Hawaii (which is commonly referred to as the Big Island) is a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. Hawaii’s youngest and largest island is a wildly diverse paradise of beaches, jungles, deserts, and, most notably, volcanos. That’s right – the Big Island is home to five different volcanos, two of which are still active!

Kauai in a Nutshell:

With lush rainforests, dramatic cliffs, and cascading waterfalls, Kaui is the epitome of a tropical getaway. But having such a verdant green landscape (it’s called the Garden Isle, after all) comes at a price. It also happens to be the rainest island in Hawaii and is even home to the wettest spot in the entire country. 

Compared to the other islands on this list, Kauai is the least visited, with over 70% of the land being inaccessible by foot. That makes it the best island to take a helicopter tour . The sparsely populated terrain is great for escaping the crowds and exploring Mother Nature, whether it’s the Napali Coast , Waimea Canyon (the Grand Canyon of the Pacific), or one of the many state parks.

If you want to see Hawaii but still have access to the comforts of civilization, Oahu is the best island to visit. 

Having a major city in the middle of the Pacific Ocean has its own benefits. The capital city of Honolulu has modern high-rises and international businesses, just like you would find on the mainland. You can even find your favorite familiar shops and restaurants in Waikiki.

However, it’s easy to escape the hustle and bustle of city life if you’re looking for something a little more low-key. There are many quaint towns and villages scattered around the island, offering a more authentic insight into Hawaiian life and culture. One of our favorite spots is the North Shore , a laid-back community just 40 minutes from Waikiki. There are beautiful beaches, great surfing, and a charming town (Haleiwa) dotted with local eateries, art galleries, and boutique shops.  

During the winter months, you can find big wave surfers up on the north shore for big wave surfing competitions, like the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. But if you’re visiting the north shore during those months, you’ll want to stay out of the water. Instead, head down south the Hanauma Bay if you’re hoping to snorkel and see some sea life. It’s one of the five best snorkeling spots on Oahu.

Another reason why Maui is a good choice for vacation is the weather. Even in the winter , you can expect sunny skies and warm temperatures (as well as minimal rain), which is important for all your fun outdoor adventures. Even the water is a good temperature for swimming!

While Maui isn’t as crowded or commercialized as Oahu, it still has a well-established tourism sector. With plenty of cultural sights, organized tours, and exciting water activities, it’s our top choice for those seeking a fun island getaway!

If you’ve never been to Hawaii before, it can be confusing to know which island to visit first. There are so many pros and cons to each! And while you should choose a destination based on your own interests and budget, we strongly believe that Maui is the best island for first timers .

Maui has the best of all the Hawaiian islands combined. If you love nature, then you’ll enjoy the sweeping valleys and golden beaches. Or, if you’re into adventure sports, then you can plan a non-stop itinerary of snorkeling, hiking, boating, and more! 

But if you prefer to spend your vacation relaxing and lapping up the sun, there’s a great variety of accommodation options . You can find luxury beach resorts, budget-friendly hotels, cozy vacation rental properties, and even sites for camping (or glamping, if you’re more into that!).

Some people might tell you that Oahu is the better choice. Don’t get us wrong – we love Oahu too! But it’s a densely populated island with a big city and lots of tourists. This is fine if you’re interested in an urban-style vacation, but it doesn’t quite give off that laid-back island vibe (unless you go to the North Shore) that many people seek when they go to Hawaii. 

Best Hawaiian Island to Visit for Families

Going on vacation with little ones can be a tedious endeavor. But thankfully, Hawaii is a very family-friendly destination! We honestly think that you and your kids can have a great time on any of the islands, but if we had to pick just one, it would be Oahu.

One of the main reasons why we chose Oahu is the abundance of family-oriented resorts, including Disney’s Aulani and the Hilton Hawaiian Village . We have also found that accommodations on Oahu are considerably cheaper than on other islands, so you won’t have to break the bank to enjoy a vacation here.

Another reason why Oahu is good for families is the calm water. While the beaches on other islands can have strong currents, the ones on Oahu are relatively relaxed . This is ideal for families or inexperienced swimmers, as you can let your kids play in the tranquil waters without much worry. 

In addition to those family beach days, Oahu also has tons of exciting activities and attractions to keep your kids entertained. Between the zoo and aquarium, the plethora of museums, and the kid-friendly classes and tours, its practically impossible for them to get bored.

If you’re staying in Waikiki , you can simply hop over to Waikiki Beach . The waves here are very small, making them perfect for your beach day. We also recommend the Ko Olina lagoons on the leeward side of the island. These man-made lagoons are protected and very shallow, which is ideal for the kiddos!

Honestly, we’ve taken our kids to all of the Hawaiian islands many times, and they’ve loved them all. So, take them to the one you think you’ll enjoy the most as a family!

Best Hawaiian Island to Visit in the Winter

There’s a reason why winter is one of the busiest times in Hawaii! With warm temperatures and sunny skies, many people come to the islands to escape the harsh weather of winter on the mainland. But the truth is – the climate varies drastically depending on which island you choose or even which part of the island you plan to visit.

If you’re planning to visit Hawaii in the winter, then we suggest Maui . While the temperatures aren’t as hot as they are on the Big Island (Kailua-Kona is in the low 80s while Kihei is in the mid-70s), it is far less rainy.

And compared to other islands which get dangerous winter swells, Maui’s waters remain relatively calm, especially in Ka’anapali and Wailea. Of course, it’s not immune to rough currents, so always pay attention to the surf forecast before heading out into the ocean. 

Another huge perk of visiting Maui in the winter is the whale watching ! As we’ve said, the island is the best place for seeing humpbacks, as it tends to have the most sightings. 

 The only downside is that things can be quite expensive. A lot of people want to go to Maui over the holidays, so expect to pay a pretty penny for accommodations, rental cars, and even some excursions. If money is a concern, then Oahu is a good second choice, as it’s more affordable and still pretty dry rain-wise.

Best Hawaiian Island to Visit for a Budget Friendly Vacation

We just gave away the answer above, but Oahu is the most affordable island to visit in Hawaii . But before we dive into costs, it’s important to note that it’s not a cheap destination – it just tends to be cheaper than the others. Hawaii, in general, is an expensive place to visit, especially when you take into account airfare, accommodations, rental car , food, and activities.

But with that in mind, you can find some good deals on Oahu. The average cost of airfare, hotel, and rental car for two people is $2,625 per week. 

The biggest expense is likely to be your accommodations, but thankfully, the nightly rates on Oahu are cheaper than on any other island. Booking a vacation rental can also save you some money ($1,422 for a week vs. $1,836 a week). Based on previous data we found, the cheapest place to fly into is the Big Island, although it’s just a few dollars cheaper than Oahu. 

Of course, the exact cost of your trip depends on many other factors, like where you’re flying from and the time of year you’re visiting. If you’re going during the summer or holiday season, you can expect to pay a lot more than if you were to visit during the shoulder seasons. For example, April, May, September, October, and November have the most affordable rates for hotel rooms and vacation rentals. Meanwhile, airfare is the cheapest in January and April.

Best Hawaiian Island to Visit for Whale Watching

Seeing humpback whales for the first time is a once-in-a-lifetime experience (although we’ve seen them countless times and can say it’s amazing each time!). They flock to the Hawaiian islands by the thousands to mate, give birth, and raise their young.

While you can see them practically on every island, Maui, historically, has the highest population. This is mainly because of the warm, shallow current from the Au’au Channel, which flows between West Maui and the island of Lanai. To give you an idea of the numbers, there were over 600 whales spotted off the coast of Maui on a single day in February 2023! 

If you’re in Maui from December to April, you can book a whale watching cruise to take you close to their hangout spots. Depending on the season, some tours may start earlier or go later if there are whales present.

It’s also possible to see them from shore, mostly between Kapalua and Wailea. However, a tour is a great way to learn more about these majestic creatures, as there’s usually a marine naturalist on board to help answer questions. Boats are also equipped with hydrophones, which means you can listen to the whale’s underwater song!

Hawai’i island.

Also commonly known as “The Big Island,” Hawaii island is the best place to visit in Hawaii if you’re looking for action, fun and diverse outdoor adventures. With 10 of the world’s 14 climate zones, it is known for its active volcanoes, beaches, waterfalls, cultural sites, colored-sand beaches and world-class snorkeling.

There are two active volcanoes – Kīlauea and Mauna Loa — in Hilo. This unique park has hiking trails, steam vents, a rainforest and guided tours. The sunny Kona side is great for beach activities such as snorkeling and stand-up paddling. The nighttime manta ray snorkel tour is unique to the island. It’s a magical experience floating on top of the water in a calm bay, with bright lights drawing the rays who swirl below.

More island attractions include Mauna Kea (the tallest mountain in the world) and Akaka State Falls. A Hawaii helicopter tour is well worth the splurge.

The fourth largest island in Hawaii, Kauai is also known as “the Garden Island.” As its name suggests, it is the best place to visit in Hawaii for nature lovers and those who enjoy a relaxed and laid-back atmosphere. The island’s mountains and valleys are lush and green, flowing with waterfalls and rivers.

Kauai is home to a number of outdoor activities including water and land sports. You can easily spend the day kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, horseback riding or hiking the trails of Kokee State Park. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can go ziplining above Kauai’s beautiful and lush valleys. Or, join a helicopter tour and see Jurassic Falls, the majestic setting where the 1993 Jurassic Park movie was filmed. The Manawaiopuna Falls (its official name) was the backdrop for the scene when the visitors first arrived on the island.

In the small town of Hanalei, you can spend some time on the beach, practice your surfing skills or do some sightseeing and bird watching.

The island of Maui is the best place to visit in Hawaii for families, especially if you enjoy driving and exploring.

Maui is popular for its Road to Hana (more on this must-do attraction later), as well as Haleakala, a dormant volcano. At 10,023 feet above sea level, the summit is an ideal place to catch a stunning sunrise or sunset. However, It can be chilly at the top, so you may want to bring a jacket or sweater!

Situated on Haleakala’s lower slopes in Kula are two unique farms worth visiting. At the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm, you can walk through lavender fields. A peaceful place, the farm offers tours and lavender products. Nearby, the Surfing Goat Dairy Farm produces award-winning cheeses. On the kid-friendly tours, you’ll feed goats and sample cheese.

The town of Kahului is the place to go if you want to be with the locals and eat where they eat. It’s also a great place to go shopping for authentic Hawaiian trinkets and souvenirs. SheBuysTravel contributor Deb Steenhagen especially recommends the Ka’anapali Beach in Maui for families and beginners who are new to surfing and want to give it a try.

Oahu (North Shore)

Home to the state capital of Honolulu, Oahu has some of Hawaii’s best beaches for families as well as urban amenities. SheBuysTravel contributor Mimi Slawoff feels that Oahu is the best place to visit in Hawaii for first-time visitors since it is typically the easiest to reach and the most affordable for family travel. Plus it offers everything from urban adventures to laid-back island vibes.

Top things to do on Oahu include visiting the North Shore’s world-renowned surfing spots Waimea Bay, Banzai Pipeline and Sunset Beach. Haleiwa, a laid-back surf town, is a fun place to stop for shaved ice and local artwork. Oahu is also known for having some of the best farmers’ markets.

Learning to surf is one of the first things to do on Oahu. It’s a big part of Hawaiian culture. So you’ve got to try it at least once while in Hawaii. Group surf lessons by Surfer Girl Academy are available for those over the age of 12.

Nicknamed the “Pineapple Island”, Lana’i was once home to a plantation that produced 75% of the world’s pineapples. Today it is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii if you want a mix of serenity and adventure.

As one of the smallest inhabited Hawaii islands, Lana’i has incredible snorkeling opportunities as well as views of the Molokai and Maui islands. On the north side of the island sits Shipwreck Beach, popular for its offshore wreck of a WWII tanker.  The secluded Polihua Beach is the best place to spot green turtles and the occasional humpback whale off of the coast.

If you’re into exploring the rugged back roads, a four-wheel drive vehicle will get you access to many off-the-beaten-path treasures. The Garden of the Gods can be found inland, presenting a lunar landscape of rock towers and boulders.

The most undeveloped accessible Hawaiian island, Molokai is a true getaway. Here, you’ll find empty beaches and 30 miles of reef with abundant marine life. The island is mostly populated by native Hawaiians. While they’re protective of their land, they welcome visitors.

There’s only one two-lane highway stretching across the small island, and Molokai doesn’t have a major resort, shopping centers or traffic lights. The small, rustic town of Kaunakakai has places to stock up for supplies.

SheBuysTravel contributor Mimi Slawoff visited with her family and believes that Molokai is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii for couples seeking an intimate island experience as well as families who enjoy authentic excursions led by locals. Some of her favorite activities were snorkeling, taking a cultural hike in Halawa Valley and swimming in the pond beneath Mo`oula Falls.

On the northern tip of the island sits Kalaupapa National Historical Park, accessible only by mule ride, hiking or commuter plane. There you’ll find steep and sheer cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean – in fact, they’re some of the tallest sea cliffs in the world!

Best Attractions to Visit:

The capital of the state, Honolulu is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii for historic landmarks, world-class shopping, nightlife and mouth-watering dining options.

Honolulu is home to some of Oahu’s most historic places such as the Pearl Harbor site and USS Arizona Memorial. Honolulu is also where you’ll find the incredible Diamond Head volcanic crater and the world-famous Waikiki Beach. In the downtown district, you’ll also find important Hawaii landmarks such as the Iolani Palace , the King Kamehameha I statue , the Kawaiahao Church and the Aloha Tower . While you’re there, don’t pass up the opportunity to attend a traditional Polynesian luau !

If you’re into deep-sea fishing, white sand beaches, historic landmarks and coffee farms, the town of Kailua-Kona (also known as Kona) is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii to satisfy those interests. Kona is also where King Kamehameha spent his final years.

Located on the Big Island, Kona is famous for its 100% Kona coffee. Kona has several coffee farms, like Greenwell Farms and Mountain Thunder, where you can walk through a typical 1920s farmhouse, tour the grounds and learn about the coffee growing process. Costumed interpreters demonstrate several traditional crafts, agricultural activities and the everyday tasks of people from the past. If you happen to visit on a Thursday, it’s worth stopping by the nearby Greenwell Store Museum to watch the traditional art of baking Portuguese bread in a large wood-fired forno.

An underwater submarine adventure is a fun way to explore Kona’s beautiful marine life and snap some National Geographic-worthy pics!

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

Located in Hilo, the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is one of the best places in Hawaii to visit for an up close and personal look at real, active volcanoes with glowing, oozing lava flows.

SheBuysTravel contributor Keri Baugh visited Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with her kids and says that it is a must-do trip on the Big Island of Hawaii. However, it is a full-day trip, so you will want to plan ahead. In her words, “It is not necessarily a splurge in terms of cost, but it is a splurge in terms of time.” There are several guided tours to the park that will take you to the area and also provide your meals.

At the Kīlauea Visitor Center you’ll learn more about what to see and where to go, as well as receive information about ranger-led tours, trails, and safety information. While at the park, you can walk through the Thurston lava tube, hike the Kilauea Iki Trail, check out the bottom of the Halemaumau crater and view breathtaking sunsets from the Jagger Museum with the crater’s flume glowing red from the lava lake beneath.

Na’Pali Coast State Wilderness Park

Located in Kauai, the Na’Pali Coast State Wilderness Park is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii for adventurous visitors who love hiking, snorkeling and beautiful views. It is known for its towering sea cliffs, narrow valleys and cascading waterfalls.

The Na’Pali Coast is home to the Kalalau Trail, an approximately 11-mile-long trail that has been named one of the most beautiful and dangerous hikes in the United States. Getting to the coast is very challenging and takes a full day. It is also a very popular area for backpacking and camping.

SheBuysTravel contributor Mimi Slawoff’s favorite activities on the Napali Coast are sailing and snorkeling amongst the sea caves. In her opinion, it’s the best way to see Hawaii’s cute spinner dolphins who jump out of the water vertically and spin like a top before diving back into the ocean.

Waikiki Beach

If you’re staying in Honolulu and are in search of a beautiful yet accessible beach, Waikiki Beach is the place to be. Waikiki is a lively beachfront urban oasis with a range of hotels, shops, restaurants and entertainment. It’s also a great family-friendly beach area with typically gentle surf.

Waikiki Beach is calm, which makes it ideal for surfing and stand-up paddling. It’s also a great place to do some whale-watching, take a sunset tour or catch an underwater submarine tour that dives 100 feet underwater to explore artificial reefs.

Waikiki also has several indoor attractions worth visiting such as the Waikiki Aquarium, Honolulu Zoo and Iolani Palace. The nearby Bishop Museum is a cool place to explore Hawaii’s history. Housing thousands of historical and cultural artifacts, the museum has shows and interactive activities sure to impress visitors of all ages.

Diamond Head State Monument

One of Hawaii’s most recognized landmarks, Diamond Head State Monument is a volcanic cone on the island of Oahu known for its historic hiking trail, stunning and panoramic coastal views and military history. It encompasses over 475 acres, including the interior and outer slopes of the crater.

There aren’t many places in the world where you can walk along a trail to the edge of a 300,000-year-old crater, but Diamond Head is one of them. However, if you go (whether alone or via a guided tour ), you’ll want to allow up to two hours for the 1.6-mile round-trip hike. Although not difficult, the trail is uneven at times. Plus, you’ll walk through a tunnel and climb 99 steps at the end! However, the trek is worth the panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu.

Haleakala National Park

Located on the island of Maui, Haleakala National Park is home to the dormant Haleakalā Volcano and endangered Hawaiian geese. Haleakala means “house of the sun” in Hawaiian, and legend has it that the demigod Maui lassoed the sun from its journey across the sky as it stood on the volcano. From there he was able to slow its descent to make the day last even longer. The park sits 10,023 feet above sea level, providing breathtaking views from all angles.

If there’s one national park that you’ll want to get up early and take a guided sunrise tour for, this is it. In fact, it is known to be one of the best places in Hawaii for watching spectacular, unforgettable sunrises. After the sunrise, you can spend some time exploring the park, admiring the seven-mile-wide crater and watching for the nene goose, Hawaii’s state bird.

Pearl Harbor

Located west of Honolulu, Pearl Harbor is the site of the WWII’s 1941 bombing attack. It’s home to the USS Arizona Memorial. The attack on Pearl Harbor is one of the defining moments in United States and world history. You can explore on your own or go with a travel guide via a guided tour . However, since it is a very popular attraction, you’ll want to reserve your tickets well in advance online. If taking the self-guided Pearl Harbor tour, plan to arrive by 7 a.m. with everyone in your group present.

Tickets for the 75-minute USS Arizona Memorial program are free. However, there’s a limited number available each day. The program includes a short video (with actual attack footage) and a round-trip boat ride to the USS Arizona Memorial. Dedicated to those who lost their lives there, the memorial is located above the remains of the sunken ship, the final resting place for more than 1,000 men.

Waimea Canyon State Park

Nicknamed the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”, the Waimea Canyon State Park is a 10-mile long, 3,000-foot deep canyon on the western side of Kauai island. Although not as big or old as the famous Grand Canyon in Arizona, it is just as amazing and offers beautiful vistas of crested buttes and rugged red rocks.

The main Waimea Canyon Overlook offers dramatic views of Kauai’s interior, while the main road, Waimea Canyon drive, takes you into Kokee State Park. There are several hiking trails for all skill levels, however, a helicopter tour is also a popular way to view the canyon and its waterfalls.

Road to Hana

The Road to Hana is the crown jewel of Hawaii driving tours and a must-do on the island of Maui. With lush rainforest, dramatic and rugged ocean vistas, countless waterfalls and pools, it makes for one of the most memorable and scenic drives while in Hawaii. Along the way, you’ll see waterfalls, black sand beaches and the charming town of Hana.

SheBuysTravel contributor Mimi Slawoff recommends getting up before dawn to get an early start. While the drive is just 52 miles long, with its 620 curves and 59 narrow bridges, it can easily turn the trip into a few hours long. Instead of driving yourself, you may also opt to do a full-day guided tour .

Hanauma Bay National Preserve

Known for its snorkeling, Hanauma Bay National Preserve is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii for exploring the island’s coral reef and diverse marine life. Nestled on the side of Koko Head, it’s roughly a 30-minute drive from Honolulu and offers a wonderful break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

With lush, green hills and beautiful blue waters, Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve is a great place to snorkel and see its 400 species of fish and abundance of green sea turtles (honus).  Formed within a volcanic cone, Hanauma Bay is a protected marine life conservation area. Before snorkeling, you’re required to watch a short video about protecting marine life. If possible, aim to get there in the morning.

Kaanapali Beach

Located in the historic town of Lahaina, this family-friendly resort area on the west side of Maui is home to a variety of beachfront hotels , terrific family-friendly restaurants and amazing sunsets. With three miles of white sand and crystal clear water, it is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii for a relaxing, yet fun beach getaway.

In addition to its beach itself, its daily sunset cliff diving ceremony from the Black Rock cliff, Puu Kekaa, is one of the beach’s most popular attractions. Ziplining is a popular activity for getting your adrenaline fix while soaring over the breathtaking coastline. Just in front of the beach is the open-air shopping complex, Whaler’s Village. There you’ll find a variety of shops and restaurants, entertainment and a renowned whaling museum.

Kauai Botanical Gardens

Kauai is known as “the Garden Isle” for a reason. There you can find three of the nation’s five National Tropical Botanical Gardens on Kauai: Allerton Garden and McBryde Garden on the South Shore and Limahuli Garden in Haena. It is certainly one of the best places to visit in Hawaii if you love nature, greenery and gardens.

The largest collection of Hawaiian flora in the world can be found in McBryde Garden while beautiful landscaping and the Jurassic Park-famous Moreton Bay fig trees can be found in Allerton Garden. Limahuli Garden is home to endangered native plants, taro-filled agricultural terraces and striking views of the Kauai North Shore.

Other botanical gardens include the Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens, Smith’s Tropical Paradise Botanical Garden and the Kauai Coffee Plantation.

Wailea is a luxurious resort community in South Maui known for its beautiful, crescent-shaped beaches and world-class golf courses. It is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii if what you’re looking for is peace, privacy and relaxation.

One of the most popular and beautiful places to visit is Wailea Beach, once named “America’s Best Beach” in 1999. Polo Beach is great for swimming and snorkeling, while Ulua Beach park is a great place to get in your morning or evening walk or job. Wailea also has great trails for hiking and viewing lava fields. In town, there are plenty of opportunities for shopping and entertainment with world-class shops, spas, restaurants and popular area events.

Polynesian Cultural Center

The Polynesian Cultural Center is one of the best places to visit in Hawaii if you want to truly feel the aloha spirit. The park features six island villages representing Hawai‘i, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga, Fiji and Aotearoa (New Zealand).

At this Polynesian-themed park and living museum, you’ll be fully immersed in each of the Pacific cultures as natives share their traditions through music, dance and activities. You’ll learn to throw a wooden spear, paddle a canoe and cook like a Polynesian. In the Umu Making Experience, you’ll learn how to cook the Samoan way. Besides cooking the food, you’ll also learn how to weave utensils, start a fire and heat rocks.

The center also has family-friendly luaus with a variety of mouthwatering, traditional food. For example, the luau features foods such as lomilomi salmon, chicken long rice and kalua pork.

Waipio Valley Lookout

Located on the Hamakua Coast, the Waipio Valley Lookout is one of the most popular places to visit on the Big Island and one of the best places to visit in Hawaii for striking views of its coastline. This beautiful valley is marked by cliffs of up to 2,000 feet high, waterfalls, taro fields and rivers.

Also named “The Valley of the Kings” Waipio Valley isn’t just about its incredible views. It is also an important site for Hawaiian history and culture, once the home of thousands of Native Hawaiians. Now, there are less than 100 residents who live there.

Note: Waipio Valley Road has been closed to visitors since February 25, 2022. halting all tourist and volunteer activities and prohibiting hiking access to the black sand beaches for non-residents. However, the lookout point can still be accessed.
