We Began Just Like You We Began Just Like You

Highway Weather was born of necessity.

It began in late 2012 with a simple problem: The app founder, Devan Stormont, was trying to visit family for the winter holidays. The drive was about 7 hours through "middle-of-nowhere" rural country with limited road and cell services. A series of rolling snowstorms were moving in a way that it wasn't clear whether the trip could be made without getting trapped in a storm. Existing apps and websites were not helpful in resolving the problem.

For the sake of safety, the trip was cancelled. Out of frustration, the first version of Highway Weather was created over the following weeks (and originally called Weather Route ).

At first, it was a hobby/personal app used to solve a personal problem and updates were made to fix personal annoyances. Over time, it became popularly adopted by many travelers and commercial users.

Since 2013, it's been our mission to ensure everyone can arrive at their destination safely.

Today, we do that by providing you the best road trip weather planner app on the market.

The best weather apps can deliver everything from the latest forecast to severe weather warnings

  • Weather on the Way
  • Yahoo Weather
  • My Moon Phase
  • Accuweather
  • Weather Underground
  • How we pick

The best weather apps can make sure that you'll never get caught unaware by the machinations of mother nature. The last thing you need is to be caught by a sudden burst or rain or wind, which could easily ruin your day if you're not prepared.

Your phone may come with a weather app pre-installed, but you'll find a dedicated weather app should be a lot more capable. Or at the very least, offers some specialized feature that your stock app can't manage as effectively. Those include things like hyper-local forecasting, air quality stats and even ultra-specialized information you'll feel like you need a meteorology degree to understand. Plus extended weather forecasting and severe weather warnings as standard.

Your stock weather app might be ok for the time being, but it's always worth checking out alternative options. Plus, with climate change makes the weather increasingly hard to predict there's no better time to start paying closer attention to upcoming weather conditions. Here are your options for the best weather apps available right now.

The best weather apps you can download today

1. carrot weather (android, ios: free).

Best weather apps: Carrot Weather

Formerly an iOS exclusive you couldn't get on Android , Carrot Weather has long since bridged the platform divide; now the malevolent AI overlord Carrot can bring Android users the weather forecast along with a big side helping of snark and sarcasm. iOS users still enjoy features like being able to add a Carrot Weather widget to their lock screens as well as support for Live Activities in iOS 16.1 . But periodic updates add other features and bonuses for premium subscribers such as tide data or forecasts for up to five locations.

The app provides current, hourly, and 7-day forecasts leavened with sarcastic humor to cushion even the gloomiest outlook. Infographics put useful information in quick reach, with more detailed meteorological data available as you tap and swipe. You can even configure Carrot's sense of humor to be friendly, snarky, or murderous, with the ability to set how political the AI's jokes can get. (A recent update even lets you interact with the deranged AI through a series of "bonding activities.")

Carrot Weather offers different subscription tiers if you're not satisfied with the basics in the free app. The Premium tier starts at $4.99 a month and adds weather data sources, notifications, customization capabilities and widgets. There are also other tiers that unlock more capabilities or let you add multiple users to a Carrot Weather account.

Download Carrot Weather: Android , iOS

2. The Weather Channel (Android; iOS: Free)

best weather apps: The Weather Channel

The free, ad-supported version of the Weather Channel app is available on Android and iOS. The TWC app provides you with a wealth of meteorological data such as temperature, wind and visibility on an hourly or daily basis, with an extended 10-day forecast available. Interactive maps can display the latest Doppler radar data to show rainfall and weather events and severe weather alerts.

The Weather Channel also includes social sharing features for users to upload images, tweets, videos and photos. A Premium Pro tier costing $4.99/month removes ads and unlocks features like 15-minute forecasts and 72-hour radar info.

Download The Weather Channel: Android , iOS

3. Emergency: Alerts (Android; iOS)

best weather apps emergency alerts

It's an app you hope you never have to use, but when disaster strikes, you'll be glad you have Emergency: Alerts from the American Red Cross on your iPhone or Android device.

Because it keeps tabs on everything from hurricanes and floods to extreme heat and winter storms, Emergency: Alerts is good to keep installed on your phone at all times, and not just during hurricane season. Not only will Emergency monitor where you live, you can also enter cities and people that are important to you. To reflect the realities of climate change, the app's been retooled to include 40 different kinds of customized alerts and step-by-step guides to make sure you're prepared for potential weather-related emergencies.

Download Emergency: Alerts: Android , iOS

4. Clime: NOAA Weather Radar Live (Android, iOS: Free)

best weather apps: Clime

Now known as Clime, the app formerly known as NOAA Radar Pro continues to stand out from the crowd with real-time radar delivered straight to your phone that shows you changing weather conditions around you. iOS users can now take advantage of lock screen widgets from the app as well.

You'll get the standard 24-hour and 7-day forecasts with severe weather alerts included. But the reason to turn to Clime is for the satellite weather imagery that gives you the full picture of precipitation, temperature and other weather details.

A premium subscription unlocks the best features on Clime, including severe weather alerts for all saved locations, trackers for hurricanes, lightning and wildfires and a temperature map. Subscribers get rid of ads, too.

Download Clime: NOAA Weather Radar Live: Android , iOS

5. RadarScope (Android, iOS: $9.99)

best weather apps radarscope

Serious weather watchers will want to turn to RadarScope for detailed satellite views that include NEXRAD Level 3 and Super-Resolution radar data. With RadarScope installed, you can trck everything from tornados and severe thunderstorms to flash floods and marine warnings. The app also helps you track the paths of storms using data from the U.S,. National Weather Service.

RadarScope's makers say the imagery in this app uses native radar data rendered in its original radial format. That gives RadarScope a lot more detail than your typical weather apps.

In addition to the $9.99 download, RadarScope offers subscription tiers that offer more data. At Tier One (?$9.99/year), you get real-time animated lighting data and up to 30 frames of radar data, among other features. The $14.99/year Tier Two subscription brings 50-frame loops, SPC outlooks, special weather statements, hail size and even more advanced features.

Download RadarScope: Android , iOS

6. 1Weather (Android, iOS: Free)

1weather best weather apps

1Weather has all the features you'd expect from one of the best weather apps, including a 10-day forecast, live radar maps, severe weather warnings and more. But it also really takes advantage of widgets so that key weather day can be visible on your phone's home screen, whether you're using Android or iOS.

We also like 1Weather's minute-by-minute and hourly forecasts for temperature and rain. Because these forecasts extend for up to 48 hours, you can really use the app to plan ahead.

The app's a free download, and a $1.99/monthly subscription removes ads while enabling other features like 10 days of daily forecasts, an AQI card and more.

Download 1Weather: Android , iOS

7. WeatherBug (Android, iOS: Free)

best weather apps WeatherBug

If there's a developing weather situation you need to track, WeatherBug can help you out. The free download not only offers Doppler radar for North America, but can provide hurricane forecasts with the help of an improved hurricane tracker. Other features include Spark lightning alerts which use GPS data to alert you to how close lightning strikes are hitting. The app also features air quality info and pollen count data on top of the usual array of weather information.

Since it pulls data from weather services, satellites and tracking stations, WeatherBug can provide hyperlocal real-time conditions with current, hourly and 10-day forecasts. Pay 99 cents a month or $9.99 a year, and you can remove ads from the app; a free 24-hour trial lets you take the paid version out for a spin.

Note that the app is just listed as WeatherBug in the iOS App Store. (iOS users also can add WeatherBug widgets to their lock screen if they're running iOS 16.) In Google's Play Store, the app goes by the name Weather by WeatherBug.

8. IQAir AirVisual Air Quality Forecast (Android, iOS: Free)

best weather apps: IQAir AirVisual Air Quality Forecast

In a time of increasing pollution and severe wild fires, knowing the quality of the air you breathe is even more important than knowing if it's going to rain. We like the IQAir AirVisual Air Quality Forecast app for the eye-catching way it presents vital data about air quality wherever your are as well as around the world.

The app promises detailed info on pollutants and the air quality index for 10,000-plus locations in more than 100 countries. You have a choice of maps for viewing air quality — either a color-coded 2D map or a Google Earth-like 3D version. AirVisual also works in 7-day forecasts so that you can plan ahead on your outdoor activities to make sure you're going out in healthy air. And if you've got on of iQAir's air quality monitors in your home, you can sync them with the app to get a mobile reading on your indoor air quality, too.

Download IQAir AirVisual Air Quality Forecast: Android , iOS

9. Weather on the Way (iOS: Free)

best weather apps: Weather on the Way

The name of the app has fluctuated between Weather on the Way and just On the Way, but the basic principle remains the same regardless of what you call the app: weather can change dramatically on a road trip, so having that information on your phone can help your journey be a safe one.

Download Weather on the Way for free, and you get navigation features combined with severe weather alerts so you can know whether to expect rain, snow or other potentially hazardous conditions during your drive from Point A to Point B.

The free version works just fine, but Weather on the Way is an even better app once you commit to a Pro subscription ($4.99 a month or $24.99 annually). Pro users get more sophisticated features like alternate routes suggestions, road visibility and expanded data about conditions such as precipitation and wind speed. Pro users also get the ability to run Weather on the Way on CarPlay screens, bringing that information to their vehicles for safer road trips.

Download Weather On the Way: iOS

10. Windy (Android, iOS: Free)

best weather apps windy

Sometimes, the best way to understand the weather around you is to see it visualized on your phone screen. That's what Windy offers with detailed maps that let you watch the weather forecast unfold in front of you.

Windy excels at wind patterns, of course, but the app has 40-plus maps available showing temperature, humidity and more. You've also got satellite and Doppler info at your fingertips, plus a hurricane tracking feature that comes in handy during storm season.

Windy provides an impressive amount of features in its free app, but an $18.99 annual subscription provides you with more frequent forecast updates.

Download Windy: Android , iOS

11. Yahoo Weather (Android, iOS: Free)

best weather apps Yahoo Weather

The beautiful Yahoo Weather app boasts a gorgeous interface that is both informative and striking. The app displays images of your location with matching time of day and weather conditions, with the option to view detailed five-day forecasts, as well as interactive radar, heat and satellite maps. Updates have brought the Android app in line with the iOS design for a unified experience across both platforms.

Other apps provide more details and features, but Yahoo Weather's clean, concise presentation makes it an eminently user-friendly, everyday app, marred only by a fairly large advertisement as you swipe up to get to the detailed forecast.

Download Yahoo Weather: Android , iOS

12. My Moon Phase Pro (Android: $1.99; iOS: $2.99)

Best weather apps: My Moon Phase

If your interest in the best weather apps extends to the lunar calendar, then My Moon Phase Pro is a must-download. The app can help you pinpoint moonrise time as well as phases of the moon with an extensive calendar for tracking the cycles of the moon. You can even get notifications for when the moon is about to enter a particular phase.

Photographers will appreciate the clear interface of My Moon Phase, as it includes information about the golden hour and the blue hour — when the moon will be in a particular position of the sky best suited for taking specific photos. On the weather front, you can also see how cloudy it will be, so that you'll know if you have a clear view of the moon.

Download My Moon Phase: Android , iOS

13. AccuWeather (Android, iOS: Free)

Best Weather Apps: AccuWeather

AccuWeather is the app to turn to for hyperlocal forecasts that help you drill down to get the informations you need. The app's daily forecasts pack in everything from rain probability to air quality, wind, cloud coverage and UV index. Live radar lets you track storms, snow, ice and temperature changes.

Detail-oriented users will appreciate AccuWeather's MinuteCast and its minute-by-minute precipitation updates. A WinterCast feature gives you a heads up on snowfall probabilities, and an update has added an ice forecast map layer.

AccuWeather is a free download, but there are now multiple paid tiers. For 99 cents a month, you can remove ads; Premium Plus costs $1.99 per month and adds an alerts feature.

Download AccuWeather: Android , iOS

14. Flowx (Android: Free)

Best weather apps: Flowx

If geeking out over maps, graphs, and predictions is your thing, check out Flowx. Formerly known as Weatherbomb, the app provides users with a rich array of charts, forecasts, and weather maps presented in a scrolling animated forecast timeline. Users can have the app center on their location automatically, or set custom locations.

Flowx can display a variety of data overlays, such as precipitation, clouds and wind direction arrows, with data sourced from the NWS/NOAA and Environment Canada. The app is ad-supported, with an optional subscription that removes ads and rewards the developer.

Flowx remains an Android-only app, but the app's website appears to be soliciting feedback for a version that works with Apple's devices.

Download Flowx: Android

15. Weather Underground (Android, iOS: Free)

best weather apps: weather underground

  • Sgtkeebs I love android but I wish android apps were like iphone's. A lot of weather apps on iOS that are also available on Android are really well made on iOS. Whereas that same weather app on android is just a glorified poorly made skin of a website with a low review score. If Android apps had the same support as iOS I would love android even more. Reply
  • cuvtixo It's interesting looking at the old comments and comparing. 2021 comments suggests to me that MyRadar might not have made the list because of an active FUD campaign! lol ;) Presently on the website, there's a banner on the first page advertising "An Investment Opportunity (in MyRadar itself)" Maybe financial instability was a reason to keep it off the list? IDK. In contrast to 2021, My Carrot is definitely on Android now, it it acts like a mature app. Maybe Tom's was psychic in predicting future glory? lol again. Maybe as time goes by, these comments should expire, because certainly the app scene can change drastically in a couple of years. Good luck in your search for the best weather app! Reply
  • Toyer Great article, however I do not understand how out of the top 15, Weather Scope didn't make the cut. It is my favorite weather app with its awesomely smooth radar. Unlike all the ones on this article, it isn't clips pasted together like a flip book. It is a seamless radar. That and the ability to select a color scheme from a list of themes is one of my favorite features. Plus the notifications are great since they are AI produced. Just my 2 cents! Reply

Best Bets for Finding Good Vacation Travel Weather

Avoid Disasters and Travel to the Best Climate

best travel weather forecast

It's a honeymoon nightmare: You've planned your beach honeymoon or romantic vacation down to the last detail--what you'll do daily, where you'll eat, even what you'll wear. Then you arrive--and the weather's miserable. Too hot and humid. Relentlessly rainy.

Worse, you get caught in a hurricane or tornado. Is it an omen or just bad planning? Any way you look at it, you suddenly realize that even honeymooners can get cabin fever ....

But wait! There's help. If you start paying attention to the weather now, you stand a good chance of avoiding a honeymoon wash-out. Learn where the weather is likely to be good when you'll be traveling, and plan your honeymoon destination accordingly.

Caribbean Weather

Since many honeymooners opt for beach vacations, let's first turn a weather eye to the Caribbean . According to a travel magazine editor,

  • "The Caribbean is perfect for honeymooners nearly all year round, as the numerous couples who go there every year prove. Unfortunately for couples who want to honeymoon in August, the Caribbean Travel Organization (CTO) does warn that they're heading there in what is one of the rainiest months on nearly every island.
  • "However, the Turks and Caicos islands do not really have a rainy season, and what little there is comes in September and lasts until November. Summer temperatures are generally in the 80s and are complemented by soft offshore trade winds. Aruba , Bonaire and Curacao (the ABC islands) also get very little rain during the year, and the rainy season does not begin until October.
  • "Even if a couple chooses an island that is going though the rainy season during their visit, they shouldn't worry too much. Caribbean rains tend not to be continual but rather periodic, occasionally heavy showers that last a very short time and are dried by the sun just as quickly. "

Meteorologist Dr. Jeff Masters, a former hurricane hunter who's now with The Weather Underground, says couples planning an August honeymoon in the Caribbean are

  • "taking a chance. August is peak hurricane season . If you go, try to book a trip to one of the more southern islands like Barbados, Trinidad, Curacao, or Aruba; these islands are too far south to get more than about one major hurricane every 100 years."

Well, maybe. As someone who has personally shlepped around in a wedding dress in 101-degree heat and who has stood ankle-deep in tropical water and watched rain pour onto her luggage from inside a Caribbean airport, I say:

Take No Chances

The official Caribbean hurricane season stretches from June 1 - November 30. Since there's virtually no activity before then, hurricane forecasts resume June 1. Come June 5-6, forecast updates on seasonal tropical activity in the Atlantic basin start to appear. If you simply can't wait, visit the Weather Underground's Hurricane Tracker to research current activity.

Watch the Weather Sites

The Weather Channel site provides current weather readings for U.S. cities as well as international destinations. It also provides access to airport and flight information.

You can also set up a customized weather page using an iPhone. Simply pick the domestic and international cities you want to keep an eye on, and you can get daily weather information.

Want to see your tax dollars at work? Visit the National Weather Service . It's the official word on weather. It's also the mega source that provides just about every TV forecaster in the U.S. who stands in front of a map wearing a cheap suit or too-tight dress, bad hair, and goofy smile with the daily report.* The site has loads of data and links; not all are fresh.

* There is one exception to the rule: The swoon-worthy  Lonnie Quinn .

Google the Weather

This couldn't be easier: Search for your destination + temperature or destination + average weather (month). It can't forecast the future, but it can give you an idea of what to expect. Do keep in mind that global warming is having an effect on climate and temperature, so do as much research on weather conditions as you can in advance of your trip.

And When You Can't Bear Heat & Humidity...

What’s one of the first things you do when you start packing for a trip? That’s right, you check the weather at your destination. Is it going to be hot, cold, or rainy? What about cold in the morning but hot in the afternoon?

You need to know these details to pack and plan correctly and stay up-to-date with any forecast changes. And, let’s be real, there are always a lot of changes to forecasts.

The following apps help you do all of the above. They help travelers plan ahead and on the go, making the most of their trip. Plus, we’ve included a couple of niche apps that help you track air quality and discover the northern lights!

We use affiliate links and may receive a small commission on purchases at no added cost to you. Thank you for your support.

7 Best Weather Apps for Travelers

Sometimes your phone’s default weather app just doesn’t cut it, especially as you travel from place to place and need more reliability.

Luckily, the following weather apps can help you plan your trip and stay prepared for any weather changes.

The Weather Channel

Weather-Proof Your Travel Plans: 7 Best Weather Apps for Travelers

The Weather Channel has been the leader for weather on TV and also claims a top spot as the best weather app. The app has easy-to-understand visualizations and alerts, so you get a quick view of the weather without spending much time in the app.

Even quicker, the latest version offers new lock screen widgets on Android and iOS16 that display the forecast on your lock screen. So, you don’t even have to unlock your phone or open the app to see the day’s forecast.

An analysis by ForecastWatch determined The Weather Channel to be the overall most accurate provider globally .

However, be warned that the free version has become quite overloaded with ads. You can upgrade to The Weather Channel Premium for ad-free weather for $4.99 per month or $29.99 per year.

Available in the Apple App Store and Google Play .

AccuWeather

Weather-Proof Your Travel Plans: 7 Best Weather Apps for Travelers

AccuWeather has ranked as the best weather app for many years, primarily because of its user-friendliness and MinuteCast® forecasts. The MinuteCast® forecasts for Minute by Minute® precipitation updates and the WinterCast™ gives you advanced warnings of snowfall probabilities and accumulation.

The World Meteorological Organization has awarded it “Best User Interface and Data Representation,” “Best Weather Warnings,” and “Best Design and Presentation of Information, User-Friendliness; Access and Customization.”

Unfortunately, the latest update for Accuweather has put two of those awards in jeopardy. New and long-time users are very unhappy with the new visuals and interface. However, they’ll very likely release another update soon, addressing the backlash they received from the latest update.

The app also has more ads than ever, which pressures users to invest in the premium. But who can blame them for wanting to profit from their highly-accurate product? The free version still works great if you overlook the ads. Or you can pay $0.99 to $1.99 per month for Premium or Premium+.

weather radar Best Weather Apps

Clime is a sleek and straightforward weather app that provides real-time weather updates and forecasts for any location worldwide. It provides NOAA weather radar live, which is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (AKA the Big Cahuna of weather).

Clime Pro has a lot of great features, including customized weather alerts based on saved locations. Plus, a hurricane tracker, advanced precipitation forecast, lightning tracker, air quality index, wildfire tracking, and more. Oh, and no ads.

As such, it’s recognized as one of the best weather apps for severe weather tracking and warnings.

The Pro is a bit pricy, starting at $2.99 per week or $9.99 monthly on iOS. However, the weekly option is nice for travelers who may only need Pro features for a short time.

Weather on the Way (iOS only)

Best Weather Apps

Weather on the Way is an iOS-only app that provides real-time weather updates and forecasts en route. You can set your driving route and it will forecast what lies ahead. So, it’s ideal for road trippers!

It is compatible with CarPlay, which is becoming more and more desirable these days. There’s room for improvement with its CarPlay usability, but it’s a relatively new app compared to others. So, improvements will surely soon follow.

The free version works well for occasional road trips. If you travel for work or pleasure often, it may be worth upgrading to Pro. You can get Pro Monthly for $4.99 or unlock all Pro features for life with Pro Lifetime at $84.99.

Available only in the Apple App Store . Google Play has a similar weather route app called Highway Weather that shows some promise.

lightning Best Weather Apps

WeatherBug is widely considered the best FREE weather app. It’s a standard yet reliable weather app that offers real-time weather updates and forecasts for any location worldwide.

The app also provides useful features such as radar maps, live camera feeds, and severe weather alerts. Additionally, WeatherBug offers a unique feature called Spark, which provides lightning alerts and safety tips.

In exchange for all its features being free, WeatherBug does have ads but not overwhelmingly so. If you can’t tolerate any ads, you can get rid of them for $0.99 per monthly or $9.99 per year.

IQAir AirVisual Air Quality Forecast

Best Weather Apps

This niche weather app provides real-time air quality updates and forecasts for any location worldwide. It covers 10,000+ locations from a global network of government monitoring stations and AirVisual’s own validated sensors.

The app also offers helpful features such as allergy and asthma risk assessments, customized alerts for air quality changes, and personalized health recommendations.

My Aurora Forecast

Aurora Borealis Best Weather Apps

This is another niche weather app that is popular among travelers. As the name suggests, it helps you see the Aurora Borealis, whether you’re a tourist or a serious aurora watcher.

It’s a must-have travel weather app if you’re traveling in hopes of seeing the Northern Lights. It tells you everything you need to know, including how likely you are to see the lights at any given location and time.

BONUS APP: The Drive Weather App

We have found the best weather app for RV travel. It takes the National Weather Service’s weather forecast showing RVers the weather along their route at the time they reach each point. It allows comparison of different routes, creating stops, interactively changing departure time, and other features that help RVers plan trips around the weather. The Winding Road Tripper

Best Weather App for Your Road Trip

This post may include affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, I (The Winding Road Tripper) earn from qualifying purchases.  Read more .

As you are about to embark on your road trip, you’ll probably want to know what kind of weather you’ll encounter along your route.

Knowing the driving conditions in advance of your road trip will help you choose the safest route and give you peace of mind.

We realized the importance of this on a recent December road trip from Milwaukee, WI to Utah. Because we were traveling in the winter, we wanted to make sure we weren’t going to run into any snowstorms, especially in the mountainous regions.

It was not easy to find the information I needed using traditional weather apps like Accuweather or Dark Sky. With these apps, I had to think about when we would be in specific cities and then look up each forecast for that specific day and time. It was a pain.

But I then found exactly what I was looking for.

I found weather apps that can show you the weather forecast for each location at the time you are expected to pass through them. Wait, what????

These apps helped us pick the safest route and plan our departure time appropriately to avoid inclement weather conditions.

There are several weather apps for road trips out there for both iPhone and Android.

We tested out 3 apps that allow you to easily check the weather along your driving route to help you arrive safely at your destination.

OUR TOP PICK – Weather On The Way

Weather On The Way is a clean and easy-to-use weather app that displays the weather conditions along your route for the days and times you are expected to drive through.  It also gives you the option of selecting alternative routes (shown below with the grey line) if the weather isn’t looking the safest on the fastest route.

Screen shot of Weather on the Way App showing the weather forecast for a road trip from Milwaukee to Utah

This app shows you a snapshot of the weather along your road trip route as well as any weather alerts that would be in effect when you pass through. You can also view the radar to see any current precipitation and which way it’s headed.

Overall, we highly recommend this app. It has a user-friendly interface and the addition of weather alerts is worth the subscription fee.

Cost for Pro Version: $2.99/month or $16.99/year

  • Available in 70+ countries
  • Can test out Pro Version 5 times before purchasing
  • Ability to add planned stops song your route, along with the amount of time stopped, to ensure accurate weather prediction timing
  • Ability to adjust departure date (up to 7 days in advance)
  • Limited abilities with the free version.

Available on:  Apple

Drive Weather – An Acceptable Option

The Drive Weather app is also an easy-to-use app full of weather info that will help you get to your destination safely.

As with Weather On the Way, you can enter your destination and all of the stops along the way. The app then shows the weather forecast at the expected time you will get to each point on a trip.

Screen shot of Drive Weather App showing the temperature along a road trip route from Milwaukee to West Virginia

The app has an easy-to-read map with options to view the radar, temperature, wind speeds, and precipitation you may run into along the route. The interface is a little clunky, but still does the job it was intended to do.

Overall, this app has a lot of useful features if you’re willing to pay for the annual subscription of $9.99

  • Option to adjust travel speed for more accurate weather predictions
  • Free version has limited abilities

Available on: Android and Apple

Highway Weather – Best Free Option

Highway Weather will show you the weather along your route for the time you will be traveling through, however it’s a bit clunky .

The best part about this app is that it gives you quite a few features with the free version.

Screen shot of Highway Weather App showing weather timeline of road trip from Milwaukee, WI to Park City, UT

The app provides suggestions on the best time to leave and allows you to pick your mode of transportation such as car, small truck, or motorcycle as these affect your travel speed.

  • Easy to adjust the departure time up to 5 days in advance
  • Get a lot with the free version
  • Available outside of the US
  • Can’t change the order of stops once entered. You can reverse the order but can’t add stops or change the order of the stops
  • Ads clutter the interface and pop up ads disrupt the user experience

Wrapping Up

Using an app to check the weather along your travel route before and during your road trip will help you avoid stressful driving situations and get you to your destination safely.

Go ahead and download the app that you think may work best for you and give it a shot.

Technology has made airplanes and navigation supremely reliable and pilots are better trained than ever. But the weather (and weather forecasts) still change rapidly, and surprises still happen. And the hard fact is that by the time the airlines tell you about major weather problems they have told hundreds or thousands of other customers, too, and everyone will be trying to reschedule together. Don't get stuck in that herd. Stay ahead of the game and keep informed on the latest airport weather risks.

How we rate the airport weather risk:

We use the "stoplight" approach to rate the weather risk - it is concise and intuitive and has proven

effective in the operations of leading forecasting centers worldwide. Our "stoplight" rating of the weather risks for any given airport is as follows:

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

Free + optional subscription

If your interest in weather forecasts is mostly about knowing when it’s going to rain, then RainViewer is the app for you.

This includes a weather radar which shows when and where storms, drizzle and other unpleasant weather events are likely to hit. And as well as a rain forecast, you can also get alerts so you won’t be caught without an umbrella. These alerts can get super specific – telling you down to the minute when the rain is likely to start and stop.

Plus, there are widgets, a storm tracker, and - while not the app’s focus - you can see other aspects of the forecast, such as the temperature and whether there will be much sun.

You can get many of the features for free, but RainViewer Premium is available as an optional subscription if you want to remove ads, get faster radar map updates, save up to 10 favorite locations, view precipitation movement direction, and get a wider variety of forecast durations.

For all that you’ll need to pay either $2.99 / £2.99 per month or $14.99 / £14.49 per year.

National Park Service

National Park Service

The National Park Service app is a complete and official guide to the hundreds of US national parks. As such it will primarily be of interest to those planning to visit a national park – but there are aspects that could appeal to anyone.

The app includes events, maps, self-guided tours, information on accommodation, points of interest, restrooms, shopping, things to do, visitor center hours, and more.

It also has accessibility features, such as audio descriptions of exhibits, and – for those who can’t physically get to a park right now – there are also links to the various webcams that give you a live look at parts of the parks.

In all the National Park Service app is feature-packed and comprehensive, and it’s also free to use. Some aspects of it arguably look a bit cheaply made – it’s definitely more functional than stylish, but when it’s as functional as this, we’re okay with that.

Appy Weather

Appy Weather

Free + $3.99/£3.99 yearly subscription

It’s not easy to get excited about weather apps, and we can’t claim that Appy Weather changes that, but most of us probably do use one or more of them regularly, and Appy Weather is well worth consideration.

Once a Windows Phone app, it’s finally made its way to Android, where it stands out through an attractive, minimalist and easy to navigate interface that has a look unlike most other weather apps.

Whether you like the style will be subjective, but feature-wise it has got everything most users need, including forecasts for the current day and the next seven days, complete with the temperature, what it ‘feels like’, precipitation, cloud cover, visibility and a whole lot of other details.

Information is largely presented on easy to read graphs and with large, clear text, and the forecasts come from Dark Sky, which is generally accurate in our experience.

A sticking point might be the cost – the free version only lets you search for a forecast five times per day. To remove that limit, get rid of adverts, and unlock widgets, you’ll need to subscribe for $3.99/£3.99 per year.

Subscribing to a weather app might seem unappealing, but most users probably won’t need to. After all, how many times a day do you really check the weather? Plus, the app’s author does a good job of justifying the price, as not only is it a great Android app, they explain that the service used to retrieve the weather isn’t free, so for the app to be sustainable a subscription model is currently necessary.

Culture Trip

Culture Trip

Whether you’re heading abroad or just want to get more out of the city you live in, Culture Trip could help.

Search for a place or just use your current location and the Android app will serve up a selection of articles, covering things to see and do, and tips and tricks relevant to the location.

Some of these articles also include videos, and Culture Trip doesn’t stick just with the obvious stuff (for example, a search for New York turned up articles such as The Enchanting Witches of New York City), but there’s plenty of more conventional content too, like lists of the top 20 sights you need to see.

You can bookmark things you’re interested in and download content so you can access it offline – ideal if you’re going to be roaming abroad. There are also links to book hotels and the like straight from the app, and with images everywhere and a nice layout, it’s a pleasure to use and get inspired by.

Atmosphere Weather

Atmosphere Weather

Free + $3.99/£3.69 annual subscription

Atmosphere Weather aims to stand out from the weather-watching crowd by presenting the forecast like a 24-hour clock. Each hour of weather is presented by a segment on the clock face, giving you a clear way to instantly see the hour-by-hour weather for the next day at a glance.

As well as seeing written temperatures on each hour, there’s also color-coding to represent the different temperatures and how clear the sky is.

You can even get calendar events displayed on the weather clock, and away from that screen there’s also a radar view, complete with wind speeds and directions.

The clock is the main feature though and it’s a genuinely useful and different twist on weather forecasts.

The only downside is that after a two-week free trial of the Android app, you have to either put up with ads or pay a subscription, which will cost you $3.99/£3.69 per year. We'd have preferred to see a one-off payment option, but if you use the app regularly it should be worth the outlay.

Fog of World

Fog of World

$4.99/£4.49

Fog of World is a new, fun take on mapping apps, as it’s inspired by the ‘fog of war’ that you get in some video games (that being fog that obscures areas of a map that you’ve not been to yet) but applies it to the real world.

The Android app gives you a detailed world map, but applies fog to it. Unlike most games the fog doesn’t actually hide the map, it just dulls it a bit. When you’ve been somewhere the fog is removed, so over time you can see all the places you’ve been on a single world map, based on which bits don’t have fog.

To make it more interesting you can level up as you make progress and unlock various achievements, such as for visiting a certain number of countries or crossing the equator. You can also sync your data so it’s available on other devices.

Fog of World isn’t going to replace Google Maps for your navigation needs, but it’s a fun, visual way to see where you’ve been, covering everything from a trip to the local store to your various holidays.

CARROT Weather

CARROT Weather

Free + optional $3.99/£3.39 yearly subscription

After a long stint on iOS, CARROT Weather has finally come to Android, and if you like a dose of snark with your forecast it’s worth getting excited about.

Because as well as providing accurate forecasts powered by Dark Sky, CARROT Weather is home to an ‘AI’ that insults you and revels in your weather-related misery. This takes the form of more than 6,000 lines of dialogue, each of which can optionally be spoken aloud by its synthetic voice.

With cute illustrations as well and even a game that sees you following clues to hunt down secret locations, CARROT Weather has more personality than any rival app.

The Android app is also good for the important matter of telling you the forecast, as you can see hourly and daily forecasts, complete with humidity, UV Index, wind speed and more.

The core app is free, but for US$3.99/£3.39 per year (or US$0.99/£0.89 per month) you can unlock a customizable widget, animated satellite maps, and get rid of adverts.

Moovit

Moovit isn’t new, but if you ever use public transport it’s an Android app that's well worth knowing about. Simply type a destination and Moovit will give you a selection of ways to get there, using all the public transport routes available.

Tap on a route to get full directions or even a map with live navigation (complete with alerts telling you when to get off the transport you’re on), or further filter your results to minimize walking, use the least number of transfers or cut out certain transport types entirely.

There are also handy features like the ability to save regular destinations and favorite the bus and train lines you use a lot, so you can quickly see their timetables.

Transport timings are real-time where available, so you’ll know if the train or bus is running late, and you can download various maps for offline use. You can also use Moovit all over the world, with transport details for new cities regularly added.

All in all, it’s one of the slickest, most feature-packed public transport navigation apps you can get.

Weather Channel’s road trip planner helps predict the forecast along your drive

Natt Garun

Road trips are one of the ultimate summer activities, but it takes a lot of planning especially if you aim to head across the country. While you can map out exactly where you’ll eat and stay and what to go see, plans can change if you come across unexpected weather. Instead of rolling with the punches, you can now attempt to make plan B if you get hit with bad weather by making use of a new The Weather Channel travel planner. In collaboration with Stamen Design, the road trip planner will show you the weather forecast for each stop you make along the drive to help you prepare or choose a new route entirely.

The road trip planner can be especially helpful if there are several different routes you can take from one city to another. “So let’s say you’re driving from New York to San Francisco, and you’re trying to decide whether to go straight across or loop up or down a bit,” the Stamen Design blog post  reads. “This will give you a sense for whether it’s going to be rainy or sunny when you plan to be in the middle of Nebraska.”

To get started, simply type in your starting and ending cities. Click the plus bubble to add stops and the app will generate the predicted weather of that general location. You can also go into the details of each city to note what day and time you plan to leave to get the most accurate forecast. However, since weather predictions are not made for more than a week at a time, things can be a bit limited in that regard.

While the map won’t tell you the best recommended route, it can help with knowing exactly what to bring on the trip. Still, like most weather forecasts, you can’t always expect the predictions to be entirely correct. But for a free app that provides a useful insight, we don’t see a reason not to use The Weather Channel travel planner. Unless, of course, you like the feeling of uncertainty or driving in a storm. After all, what’s a road trip without some spontaneous adventures?

At the moment, the app is currently only available for travel in the United States. Sample your own possible trip here .

The Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra and Roborock S8 Max Ultra are two of the newest additions to the Roborock family. Along with having almost identical names, these robot vacuums share much of the same spec sheet -- including the ability to mop and vacuum in a single cycle before automatically emptying their dustbin and cleaning their mops. They're impressive gadgets by all accounts, but since they're wildly expensive, you'll want to carefully compare the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra and Roborock S8 Max Ultra before adding one to your home.

Fantastic app and fantastic help

I purchased this app last night after stumbling across it when I was looking for something - anything - that would help me plot weather across my route simply. This app did it beautifully. The interface is great, simple, and informative. I also had what I thought was a glitch (but was not) when I tried to open it on a second device. It turned out that I simply had to wait for that device to sync with my App Store/Apple ID so that the purchase would be recognized. In the interim, I emailed the developer and got a response within minutes. How great is that? I assume the forecast information is accurate since I have not actually traveled as route yet (though, from what I’ve seen as it relates to other weather forecast, the temperatures and cloud cover appear to be accurate) but, from all that I have seen so far, this app is fantastic. If you are a traveler, buy it!

Good app but expensive

I like the app and the concept is good. Functionality appears to be good too. But like 99% of apps in the App Store, I will never subscribe to it. More and more apps are switching to a subscription based service. Everyone being greedy trying to reach into consumers’ pockets. Most apps are over priced or not worth the money at all. Why in the world people pay, it beats me! With that said, this app is subscription based, and even though I am against monthly or annual subscriptions, I feel that if you travel a lot the 5 bucks per month is reasonable. But again, only if you do a lot of travel or for whatever reason you need to know the weather along the way. The problem I have with this app and the reason I gave it two stars, is because for the occasional trip that I do five bucks per month would make it a waste of my money. I would use it enough to justify 5 bucks per month or an annual subscription. So I am moving on to other similar apps with free versions. Or, I’ll keep doing it the good o’ fashion way. That is, open the good o’ Weather Channel app and check the weather along the way. Not hard to do at all.

Developer Response ,

Hi. Weather on the Way does have a free version. The paid subscription only applies to advanced PRO features, you can use the app for free perfectly well to plan your trips, especially if you don’t need all the advanced data. We have a breakdown of which features are PRO and which are fee on our website and in the app.

Awesome app and awesome customer service

I just downloaded the app a few days ago and checked out the settings and features. I hadn’t had a chance for ‘real world’ use but had a question about the app so I contacted them. It did take two days to get a response but I did email them in the middle of the weekend and have no idea what time zone they’re in. They wrote back, not only answering the question I had but went above and beyond for me. I’ll be able to test the app tomorrow as I have appointments out of town and will update this review if anything changes.
Hi, thanks for the review! I’m glad you like the app!

Weather forecast: You might want to rethink your trip to Upstate NY to view solar eclipse

We're almost there.

In just two days, the solar eclipse finally arrives in New York. Are you planning on heading to Upstate New York to view the total eclipse ? You might want to rethink your plan after reading the forecasts and go with a view of the partial eclipse instead.

Meteorologists continue to refine their forecasts for the total solar eclipse , and now have a pretty good idea of where the spectacle will be most (and least) visible. Based on those forecasts it looks like the New York City area and Hudson Valley will be treated to clear skies.

Here are the latest forecasts:

Where will the solar eclipse be visible?

Federal forecasters said Saturday afternoon that the best chances for clear viewing of the total eclipse are in northern New England. There is also a possibility of clear viewing from northern Arkansas to central Indiana, the National Weather Service said, "but this is the area of greatest uncertainty due to potential high clouds."

For the Hudson Valley and NYC in the partial eclipse zone, Monday should see sunny and clear skies, according to the National Weather Service. The temperatures are expected to be a warm 61 degrees, almost feeling like the beginning of summer, which are practically perfect conditions for eclipse viewing.

Sunday and Monday look partly sunny and warm. Friday and Saturday's high temperatures could reach 48 degrees, with low temperatures expected to drop to 38 degrees.

"Cities like Los Angeles, El Paso, New York City, Boston and Raleigh should all have nice views of the eclipse from start to finish," according to AccuWeather lead long-range forecaster Paul Pastelok said.

What will the forecast be in Western and Northern New York?

Unfortunately for folks in the path of totality, clouds may impede viewing "from Texas into southern Arkansas, and across Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania, and New York," Pastelok said.

The  AccuWeather forecast  predicts 59 degrees with mostly cloudy conditions on April 8, with cloud cover of 71% and a 12% chance of precipitation for the afternoon. The National Weather Service’s  Weather Threat Matrix  calls for a max temperature of 60 degrees with 62% sky cover.

What time is the solar eclipse?

The Hudson Valley will not be in the path of totality but will see between 88-99 percent coverage. Starting at 2:11 p.m. April 8 in Westchester County, the moon will begin to appear to move in front of the sun. Maximum coverage begins at 3:25 p.m. By 4:36 p.m. the moon will have moved past the sun returning the light to normal. You can search by zip code  to find the exact time and amount of coverage for your location.

Sunday weather in the Hudson Valley

All chance of rain should be gone by Sunday, but some clouds may stick around. Sunday's high temperature is expected to be around 51 degrees and low temperatures could drop to around 33 degrees overnight.

Elsewhere, for the partial eclipse,  AccuWeather  long-range expert Joe Lundberg added that "other areas with poor viewing conditions will be from Wisconsin westward through South Dakota and Nebraska to Washington and Oregon."

America's Total Eclipse is happening today. Here's the latest outlook from the FOX Forecast Center showing which regions of the U.S. will have the best viewing conditions and which areas might have to contend with cloud cover.

Forecasts for the total solar eclipse show the best viewing conditions will likely be found in parts of New England and the Midwest , while clouds might obscure the view of the eclipse in portions of Texas and the interior Northeast .

On Monday, a total solar eclipse will be visible across parts of Mexico , Canada and the U.S. , from Texas to Maine . A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth , completely blocking the face of the Sun for several minutes. It will be the last time a total solar eclipse passes over a large part of the U.S. until 2044 .

LIVE COVERAGE: TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE APRIL 2024

To experience the full eclipse, you'll need a pair of solar glasses and to be located along the more than 100-mile-wide path during totality. A clear sky is also key to watching a total solar eclipse .

The FOX Forecast Center has put together the cloud cover forecast shown on the map below, showing areas predicted to have an overcast sky, many clouds or few clouds during the eclipse. This map will continue to be updated right up until the eclipse on Monday afternoon.

TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE LIVE TRACKER: CLOUD FORECASTS FOR CITIES, STATES IN PATH OF TOTALITY

The FOX Forecast Center said the trend for clearer skies is holding at the northeastern end of the path of totality in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont , but some clouds may still be floating around areas near and downwind of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario in northern Ohio , northwestern Pennsylvania and parts of western, central and upstate New York .

Buffalo , New York, is currently forecast to have clouds during the event, but less cloud cover is expected to the north and east. The forecast is looking favorable for Caribou , Maine, among the last cities to see the eclipse in the U.S. before the path of totality heads into Atlantic Canada.

In addition to the cloud cover, NOAA's Storm Prediction Center has highlighted portions of Texas, Oklahoma , Arkansas and Louisiana for a severe weather threat on Monday .

This risk zone includes Dallas , San Antonio , Austin , Waco and Texarkana in Texas, as well as other towns in the southern Plains and lower Mississippi Valley along the path of totality.

Nearly the entire eclipse's path of totality within Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas faces a severe weather risk beginning Monday afternoon. The hope is that the thunderstorms might hold off just long enough into the afternoon after the eclipse passes through the region. Even so, severe weather later in the afternoon and evening could catch travelers off guard in what is expected to be heavy traffic through the rest of the day as eclipse gazers head home.

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Thinking of taking a last-minute drive to see the eclipse here's what to know.

RV traffic sits at a standstill along a two-lane road near Madras, Ore., a few days before the 2017 total solar eclipse. Experts say traffic could be heavy, but eclipse watchers shouldn't necessarily be deterred.

NASA says that roughly 31.6 million people live in the path of this year's total solar eclipse, and a little under half of the U.S. population lives within 200 miles driving distance of the path of totality .

That could mean many millions of Americans will hit the road to get a better view on April 8. If you're still pondering whether or not you want to make the journey, here's what to consider.

Have some destinations in mind, and check the weather and cloud cover forecasts in advance

It's a good idea to scout out one or more locations within driving distance, so that you have some flexibility if traffic or weather is threatening your plans, says Jonathan Upchurch, a professor emeritus of civil engineering at Arizona State University who has studied travel around solar eclipses.

There are several interactive tools that show the path of totality, including Eclipse2024.org and the National Solar Observatory . You can use them to figure out what sites might work best for you.

In terms of weather, check not just the weather forecast, but also the cloud cover forecast. Some websites, such as Windy.com will predict cloud cover ahead of time, giving you a sense of whether you'll actually be able to see the eclipse in all its glory.

Everything you need to know about solar eclipse glasses before April 8

Everything you need to know about solar eclipse glasses before April 8

During the total solar eclipse in 2017, Upchurch says he chose to go to Idaho "because there were some great chances of having sunny skies, and I had the opportunity to be nimble and relocate if I wanted to."

Before driving into the path of totality, make sure your gas tank is full and that you've got everything you need

During the last total solar eclipse in 2017, it's estimated some 5 million people took to the roads, and those numbers will potentially be much higher this year.

Given all that, Upchurch says it's important to make sure you're taking what you need into the path of totality. You should make sure your car is gassed or charged up, and that you have plenty of snacks and water with you in case you get stranded for a while, especially when trying to leave.

Also don't forget to bring eclipse glasses, which must be worn anytime you're looking at the sun, except for the few minutes when it is completely blocked by the moon.

Some state emergency planners also recommend bringing a paper map or road atlas in case cellular networks become overloaded with visitors seeking directions from their phones.

Arrive early and stay late

Once you figure out where you're going to watch the eclipse, and you've got your supplies, try to get there early. Although traffic is likely to be heavier than normal on the morning of eclipse day, it still should be possible to reach many destinations without too much hassle, says Upchurch.

"Leaving is definitely going to be more of a problem," he says. As the eclipse concludes, people will take to the roads all at once to try and get home as fast as they can. In 2017, that led to traffic jams that lasted many hours in some areas. If possible, Upchurch says, people should stay put for a while to try and avoid the worst of the post-eclipse rush, which in 2017 stretched even into the following day in some parts of the country.

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

And one more thing: If you do find yourself on the move near the time of the eclipse, state officials stress that you should not simply pull over to the side of the road or highway you're driving on. It's important to be parked legally and safely at the moment of totality.

If you're already in the path of totality: Relax and enjoy!

Several major metropolitan areas including Dallas, Indianapolis, Cleveland and Buffalo are already inside the path of totality, so there's no need to seek a better view, Upchurch says. You'll probably have the most fun simply staying where you are.

If you're on the edge of the path of totality, however, you might consider making a short trip to get closer to the center of the eclipse's path.

"If you're within about 40 miles of the center line, you'll have two-and-a-half minutes or more" of complete totality, Upchurch says. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth making the trip to a more central location.

Despite studying the potential hassles of traveling extensively, Upchurch says he's still looking forward to seeing the 2024 eclipse, which he plans to watch from Texas.

"Totality is absolutely spectacular," he says. "If you have a chance to witness it, I would do it."

Can you see the solar eclipse through clouds? Latest Chicago solar eclipse forecast

The 2024 total solar eclipse takes place monday, april 8, published april 5, 2024 • updated on april 5, 2024 at 1:10 pm.

The Chicago area forecast is looking a little bit sunnier for Monday's total solar eclipse .

"Still some clouds to start out the day," NBC 5 Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said, of the forecast for April 8, adding that morning clouds could linger from rain Sunday.

24/7 Chicago news stream: Watch NBC 5 free wherever you are

"Some models show clouds gone by the time the sun comes up," Jeanes added, noting that clearer conditions were expected as the day goes on.

The latest cloud cover forecast map from the National Weather Service shows some cover over Illinois and Indiana Monday afternoon, though uncertainty still remains.

Feeling out of the loop? We'll catch you up on the Chicago news you need to know. Sign up for the weekly Chicago Catch-Up newsletter here.

"The best chances for clear viewing remain in northern New England and from southern Missouri to central Indiana," the map said. "There is still uncertainty, so continue to check for forecast updates."

Some models showed clouds clearing entirely as the eclipse approaches, Jeanes said.

Did you see those mysterious twinkles before and after the total solar eclipse?

"It looks like some clearing right when the eclipse is about to begin," Jeanes said Friday. "Late morning, early afternoon some clearing around Illinois and Indiana which would be great news for those that are driving to Indiana or southern Illinois for the eclipse."

According to experts, the best time to look up into the sky ( with proper eyewear ) Monday will be between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., depending on where you live .

Can you see the eclipse through clouds?

You may still be able to see the eclipse through clouds, experts say, as it could depend on the type of clouds that appear.

"Even 100% cloud cover, it could be thin clouds and you still may see at least a filtered view of the solar eclipse," Jeanes said. "So just because you see a lot of clouds on a computer model it doesn't mean you're not going to be able to see anything."

"If you have high thin clouds, it can block the view slightly but will still allow for much of the eclipse to be visible," Meteorologist Alicia Roman said. "If you have low, thick clouds ... it will still look darker for the duration of the eclipse, it just wont be as dramatic as if it were a sunny day and turning completely dark the next second. The skies will just dim or get a little darker."

When a solar eclipse happens, some clouds tend to disappear.

Scientists at the Royal Netherland Meteorological Institute recently found shallow cumulus clouds dissipate in large number when just 15% of the sun is covered. That’s because the earth’s surface cools when the sunlight is blocked, reducing updrafts of warm air that usually emanate. Those updrafts are necessary to form cumulus clouds since they carry water vapor as they rise into cooler altitudes.

What time is the solar eclipse?

According to NASA scientists , the eclipse will take place on Monday, April 8 in the afternoon hours across the North American continent, with the area of totality impacting areas in southern Illinois and central Indiana.

During a total solar eclipse, the new moon intersects the path of the sun in the sky, causing the sun to be partially and then nearly completely blocked from view.

In Carbondale, Illinois, the partial eclipse on April 8 will begin at approximately 12:42 p.m. During this time, special glasses will be needed to view the eclipse, though there are other ways of seeing the moon’s impact on the sun’s light reaching the Earth.

At approximately 1:59 p.m., “totality” will begin in Carbondale, and during this time, stargazers will be able to look at the eclipse without any aid whatsoever, with darkened skies and the famed “corona” blazing around the edges of the moon.

This period will not last for very long, as totality is expected to end at approximately 2:03 p.m., according to NASA scientists.

The partial eclipse will continue for another hour, ending at approximately 3:18 p.m.

Here's a city-by-city breakdown for those in the Chicago area and in the path of totality in Illinois.

Where is the "path of totality?"

The eclipse's "path of totality" will start in Southwest Texas and move northeast.

The path of totality includes the southern tip of Illinois, central and southern Indiana and Indianapolis. From there, it will race across Cleveland, Ohio; Buffalo, New York and into Maine.

The below map from the Adler Planetarium shows what the eclipse will look like in Illinois , with Carbondale, Mount Vernon, Metropolis and Mount Carmel among the southern Illinois cities in the path of totality.

News & features, winter center, total solar eclipse cloud forecast: will clouds spoil your view.

Clouds aren't the only concern for eclipse viewers. Severe weather could present problems for thousands traveling to and from viewing destinations.

Published Apr 1, 2024 9:23 AM PDT | Updated Apr 8, 2024 11:52 AM PDT

What will make this year’s eclipse different from the one in 2017? When will the next one be in the U.S.? We’re answering those questions and much more.

The final countdown is underway! In just a few hours, the moon's shadow casts part of the United States into darkness for a few fleeting moments, and the deciding factor of whether or not people in the path of totality see the event may boil down to one thing: clouds.

The eclipse takes place on Monday, April 8, and for areas in the path of totality, it will be an afternoon affair, with the exact timing varying depending on your location. People outside of the path of totality will still be able to see a partial solar eclipse as long as clouds don't spoil the show.

AccuWeather's latest total solar eclipse cloud forecast is looking promising for some but concerning for others, AccuWeather lead long-range forecaster Paul Pastelok said. Most places in the vicinity of the path of totality will have to deal with some level of clouds, whether high or low. But there are some areas with good viewing expected.

best travel weather forecast

Where will the best weather be for viewing the eclipse?

The best viewing near the path of totality is from Missouri to Ohio and most of New England. Some high clouds will block the viewing at times from Dallas to Amarillo, but the skies will still offer a decent showing.

"The clearing zone is pushing quickly across Indiana and Ohio this morning. However, some high clouds will continue to streak south to north in this region," Pastelok said. "Viewing looks good for cities like Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland and possibly improving in Pittsburgh during the eclipse."

The best areas to watch with more sunshine will be eastern and northern New England, eastern Carolinas and Georgia, and a narrow band from southern New Mexico, central Plains and Ohio Valley. In addition, the viewing looks better in Florida and California, away from the path of totality.

"Major cities like Los Angeles, El Paso, New York City, Boston and Raleigh should all have nice views of the eclipse from start to finish," Pastelok said.

What areas face a cloudy forecast for Monday?

Places along or near the path of totality with more adverse viewing conditions due to low to mid-level clouds are from southeastern Texas to western and central Pennsylvania and parts of western and central New York state.

"Other areas with poor viewing conditions will be from Wisconsin westward through South Dakota and Nebraska to Washington and Oregon," AccuWeather long-range meteorologist Joe Lundberg explained.

Severe weather threat to eclipse viewers

In addition to the cloud forecast, there are a few factors involved in the weather pattern after the eclipse that could affect those traveling from viewing locations. Strong winds, dangerous lightning strikes, hail and perhaps a few tornadoes could threaten those traveling back home Monday night and Tuesday.

Showers and drenching thunderstorms can occur across east Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley on Monday and slowly move northward into southern Oklahoma later in the day and night. Strong winds, dangerous lightning strikes, hail and perhaps a few tornadoes could threaten those traveling home from eclipse viewing the night of April 8 and during the day of April 9. Areas along and north of Interstate 10 in Texas may have to deal with severe thunderstorms during this period.

AccuWeather Senior Director of Forecasting Operations, Dan DePodwin is urging eclipse travelers to be aware of their surroundings. “With so many people traveling to unfamiliar areas and camping or staying in an RV, it’s important to take a few minutes to locate your nearest storm shelter. It may be a sturdy restroom building, campground office, a nearby public storm shelter, or even a 24-hour retail store,” he said.

The slow-moving storms can lead to flooded roadways, especially along interstates 10, 20 and 30 from central Texas to the western Tennessee Valley during this period. Flooding downpours can impact interstates 20, 30 and 40 across northeastern Texas, southeastern Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Kentucky and Tennessee Monday night into Tuesday.
