Beyoncé is welcomed home by Houston’s chrome-covered fans

By Lauren Bulbin and Mark Felix | Sep 25, 2023

Houston’s NRG Stadium was brimming with a new kind of energy this weekend. The Beyhive swarmed the city for the arrival and performance of Beyoncé. This was the Queen’s triumphant return to her hometown stage, where she performed for thousands of fans on Saturday and Sunday night on her Renaissance World Tour. Fans arrived from all over the world, causing tickets prices in Houston to be among the most expensive on the global tour. Some paid 3x more than in other cities for floor tickets. And, of course, there was no shortage of chrome cowboy style!

Daniel Bautista, 25, has his photo taken by a friend during a Beyoncé-themed pre-game party in Houston.

“Beyoncé, being a fellow Virgo like myself, really encapsulates the hard work, talent and commitment to her artistry that I fell in love with. Apart from being nothing short of pure talent, she is an amazing human being that loves and respects everyone around her and that is a characteristic that sets her apart from most A-list celebrities. Lastly, I love and adore Beyoncé because time and time again she demonstrates that she doesn’t make music, she creates art that will transcend time and cultures.”

British Vogue Went Backstage On Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour

Exclusive British Vogue Went Backstage On Beyoncs Renaissance Tour

Social media has provided extensive coverage of Beyoncé ’s Renaissance tour thus far. The stellar vocals, cowboy hat-clad attendees and epic dance routines have dominated feeds since Queen B first stepped onto the stage in Stockholm on 10 May, but the happenings backstage have stayed largely out the public eye – until now.

Exclusively for Vogue , photographer Rafael Pavarotti ventured behind the scenes during her explosive London performances, to capture the mood before, during and after her breathtaking sets. “The live energy is incomparable,” he says of the one-of-a-kind assignment. “It literally was something unique that I’ve never seen or felt before.”

The photographer helped to shape the early Renaissance visuals with his July 2022 cover shoot for British Vogue , featuring a resplendent Bey astride a horse, wearing a peacock-feathered Harris Reed halo. But photographing the star in work mode was an entirely different kind of brief. “Watching her live is very different: she has a transcendent energy so powerful that it is surreal to experience in person,” he says.

The Vogue shoot was a history-making fashion moment in itself, and Renaissance was yet another style win for Bey: the fashion concert to end all fashion concerts. “It was always a surprise for me when she came out of the dressing room, looking extremely marvellous,” says Pavarotti, who witnessed first-hand the multiple costume changes ( opera gloves ! Catsuits! Crystals!) that were planned and executed with as much precision as her choreography.

With the help of Beyoncé’s official photographer Mason Poole (an invaluable guide), who “already understood all the spots, her movements and timings”, Pavarotti was a fly on the wall as the singer took audiences on a journey through her greatest hits , from albums Renaissance to 4 and back again. “It was really beautiful to see all the magic happening so close,” he says, praising the meticulous attention to detail and organisation of her team. “This was the first time I had this kind of experience in my life, it was mesmerising and a lot of fun.”

In one particularly memorable moment, Pavarotti had just seconds to click the shutter when the singer laid herself inside a gargantuan shell. The resulting image became one of his favourite shots. His position backstage also allowed him to capture a powerful frame of her levitating confetti finale from behind. “It was like I was having the same vision that she had, of those thousands of people.”

By Edward Enninful

Beyond the singer’s takeover at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, audiences across Europe have marvelled at the exquisite tour wardrobe she’s debuted at every show. “We created pieces that were visually delicate but also durable,” says designer David Koma, who made the bespoke printed minidress seen in Pavarotti’s portfolio, while fellow London-based talent Roksanda Ilincic “brought out her fearless charisma that we, as women, all admire and adore so much” with her sculptural electric blue gown.

Off-White’s art and image director Ib Kamara reveals he was “WhatsApping like crazy” after watching Beyoncé, Blue Ivy and the dance squad walk out in his custom looks at the London show, and Robert Wun felt similarly moved seeing Bey in his voluminous couture. “It felt very surreal and emotional.”

For Balmain’s Olivier Rousteing, creating looks for Renaissance was another milestone in his long-standing partnership with the star. “As everyone who knows me already knows, I love a challenge. And perfecting creations that combine the best in modern Parisian couture’s savoir-faire with the needs for performances in sold-out arenas… well, believe me, that is an amazing challenge.”

Time will tell what Beyoncé will wear next, but she well and truly made her mark on Europe.

Every Look From Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour, From Custom Catsuits to Disco-Inspired Couture

Beyonce performs wearing Balenciaga

Beyoncé’s Renaissance tour began with a bang in Stockholm and it hasn't slowed down since. The highly-anticipated show has featured inventive set design, a decades-spanning setlist, and a plethora of standout style moments—from to archival pieces to custom looks and nearly everything in between. The star’s wardrobe has combined her signature style with the visual ethos of the album Renaissance ( think lots of sequins, silver, catsuits, and the occasional bee-inspired look). Beyoncé has also been wearing looks from brands specific to the city she’s performing in—for the UK leg of her tour she wore picks from the London-based Mary Katrantzou and Robert Wun while in Marseille, France she opted for a look by designer Simon Porte Jacquemus.

The singer has donned looks from both established brands—Valentino, Mugler, lots of Alexander McQueen, among others—as well as smaller labels like Anrealage and Brandon Blackwood. Balmain catsuits and mini dresses have been a constant throughout her tour wardrobe (in March, she partnered with creative director Olivier Rousteing to design a Renaissance couture line for the brand ) as well as imaginative pieces from Loewe. Beyoncé began the tour in Europe which has seen her in London, Paris, and other cities with the last being Warsaw, Poland on June 28th. She will then head to North America with her last date coming in New Orleans, Louisiana on September 27th. Needless to say, there will be countless more style moments to come—so, to make sure you don’t miss one look, keep checking back here as we keep track of everything Beyoncé has worn during the Renaissance world tour.

The outfit seemed to be a shorter version of a look she wore earlier on in the tour.

Regarding Beyoncé, Mother of the House of Renaissance

By Julianne Escobedo Shepherd

Beyonc performs onstage

When Renaissance dropped last summer, it was perfect timing. The masses were ready to shake off that last bit of ennui wrought by pandemic isolation, and Beyoncé exhorted us to celebrate that we were alive en masse, and to do so in the face of all that was scary: crowds, evil bosses, legislators, haters, the Supreme Court. “ Break My Soul ,” the single indebted to ’90s vocal house, was a jubilant, defiant protest. Its arrival on June 20, 2022, just four days before SCOTUS overturned Roe v. Wade , meant that it soundtracked furious pro-choice rallies across the country. It also lent itself to a larger landscape: a perfect lip-sync song in the era of state-level drag bans, a song of strength devoted to Black women and LGBTQ people in the ongoing fight for justice.

Millions of people have been enthralled by Beyoncé’s live imagination of Renaissance since it hit the road this May in Stockholm. When I saw her perform for a crowd of 82,000 at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium this summer, it was impossible not to think of this timing. Her vehement demand for joy as an intervention was on full display, on giant glittering screens projecting her every expression and accessory. The pan-African flag gleamed across the masses as she sang “Black Parade” from atop a silver tank, her eleven-year-old daughter Blue Ivy raising a Black Power fist at her flank. The sound of ballroom artist Kevin JZ Prodigy commentated “cunt to the feminine what, ow” in staccato cracks as she hand-twirled into the quiet ferocity of “Cozy.” The rejuvenating tribute to her idol, the icon and queen of rock Tina Turner, with a transcendent rendition of “River Deep, Mountain High.” The retrofitting of the famous Italian painting The Birth of Venus , in which she emerged like a pearl on the half shell via Flora Purim singing “Plastic Off the Sofa.” The visibility she gave her inclusive, euphoric array of dancers and performers, including those who were nonbinary, transgender, plus-size, and, in the case of one trumpeter in her famous all-woman band, pregnant. The space she gave voguers from the ballroom scene, including Darius Hickman , Carlos Basquiat , and Honey Balenciaga , to express the beauty of their art.

That concert was one day after one of her fans, a 28-year-old Black dancer named O’Shae Sibley , was murdered in a racist and homophobic hate crime at a gas station in Brooklyn, simply for voguing to Renaissance . (The chant that followed at a memorial in Los Angeles, one of several across the country, went: “O-O-O-Shae. He was voguing to Beyoncé.”) Balenciaga took time off to join mourners in Brooklyn, and Beyoncé paid her respects . O’Shae Sibley’s death underscored the importance of her speaking directly to her queer fans, using her massive power as a place for others to reflect themselves back and, one hopes, teach everyone else respect and tolerance. The devil is working hard , but Beyoncé works harder.

And in a disquieting climate in which a young Black man can be targeted simply for expressing his joy, it’s a massive relief to experience something that feels like an unencumbered blast of good, even amidst the very real fact that inclusion and catharsis is not protection . In that way, Renaissance has been the year’s defining, galvanizing cultural event, a release in which the catharsis of the club has been replicated on a massive scale. Fashion alone has been altered irrevocably: Beyoncé’s custom looks for each concert are chronicled in all their intricate splendor on her Instagram , and her label Parkwood has been posting the fans in kind, showcasing their gorgeous outfit photos from each tour stop. (In late August, Beyoncé requested attendees “wear your most fabulous silver fashions” in honor of her birthday and Virgo season.)

Beyonc surrounded by dancers onstage

The way attendees have been showing out reflects their widespread intent to be active participants in one of the most inclusive pop tours ever staged. They’ve spent massive amounts of money to travel overseas for early stops of the tour, to buy outfits that represent both the flashiest church and sophisticated club afters, and to be a member of the Renaissance. I saw these things span across age, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, even class differences, as evidenced by the high-low range of the style and ingenious amount of DIY fashion. While the active, enthusiastic participation has been delicious for fans to watch online, it felt even better to be cocooned in it in person—throngs of showgoers clad in glimmering sequins, silvery cowboy boots, iridescent hats, and LED accessories, taking a cue from the Renaissance cover art and Beyoncé's equine partner, the mirrorball-clad Reneigh. (Everyone, it seems, is a horse girl now.) Fans have been instrumental in the actualization of the tour and the crucial key to its ambience and sense of communal activity. When I was there, even the security was hype. In my row in the stands, an exceedingly jovial guard—over-50 and white, with a Jersey accent—took outfit photos for showgoers with their phones. When he saw my friend and I laughing happily at his enthusiasm, he admitted with a grin, “I turn into a bad bitch for Mrs. Carter!”

That fandom and connection goes beyond the camaraderie and aesthetics of such a show. In the realm of performance, there is simply no one better than Beyoncé, who is living proof that women don’t wither and die in middle age, they flourish. For the duration of her career, she has delivered pristine vocals alongside punishing athleticism, all while holding her facial expressions at exactly the correct angle and leading a gargantuan stage with tens of dancers and musicians. It’s the level of greatness that solicits respect from the greats themselves. On the Renaissance tour stop that fell on her birthday in September, Diana Ross—79 and still going strong—came onstage to support Beyoncé, leading a muva-to-muva singalong of “Happy Birthday” that ended with a heartfelt hug. “I’m thankful for every flaw, every stretch mark, every FUPA… I’m thankful that I’m here, at fuckin’ 42,” Beyoncé said before the going into the song “Flaws and All.” She held court in a black lace gown custom-made by Dolce & Gabbana, looking every bit the regal diva, making a promise that she’s nowhere near half-done. There is strength in seeing adult women command such massive audiences, and a reminder that our own wrinkles, or stretch marks, or crow’s feet don’t define us, but rather showcase our experiences and wisdom.

article image

Beyoncé opens the Renaissance shows with a run of four ballads, including a majestically felt rendition of “Dangerously in Love” and Mary J. Blige’s “I’m Goin’ Down”—itself a cover of ’70s soul group Rose Royce—that grounds her as a brolic purveyor of blues. Through the rhythmic three hours that follow, she interpolates—live remixes, really—her own discography into itself as well as intergenerational cuts from other artists (“Love on Top” with the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” to cite one ). Three-quarters of the way through the concert, she performs her transcendent cover of Frankie Beverly and Maze’s “Before I Let Go,” a nod to her Homecoming album and another link from her own music to Black pop hits past. She improvised deep cuts, too: upon seeing Tia Mowry in the Los Angeles crowd, she interpolated a bit of “ Yeah, Yeah, Yeah ,” a song Mowry released with her girl group Voices in 1992, when Bey was a tween. Throughout, she deploys the sorts of extravagance and camp that ballroom values, Mothering outlandishly through her “Heated” commentating , inspiring Beyoncslay memes across social media, and making an interactive game out of which city shushes most thoroughly when she sings “look around, everybody on mute” in “Energy.” (Houston seems to have won.)

No one else at this level possesses the same combination of historical gravitas and trenchant work ethic, or uses their platform to link their work to the roots of American Black music and beyond. Take, for instance, the segment in the Renaissance tour when she uses a costume change break to edify the audience about the history of house, with videos about its importance set to soundtracks like “ Percolator ” and “ Hot Music ,” the unofficial theme songs of New York City block parties for three decades. She not only grounds Renaissance in a long lineage, she reminds audiences that house music is Black music, and important to understanding its presence. To that end, she has enlisted a slate of young, queer, Black, and regional DJs to provide opening music—and vibes—for Club Renaissance, including Arca, Ariel Zetina, Mike Q, and Uniiqu3, both cosigning them and giving them the rare opportunity of playing music for stadiums. She’s also blessed regional stars at certain chosen stops—Kendrick in L.A., Megan Thee Stallion performing the “Savage Remix” for the first time ever in Houston, and a solid rumor that Big Freedia will join her on “Break My Soul” for her stop in New Orleans this week.

Beyonc hoisted in the air

It’s hard to think of a massive pop tour that speaks so clearly and perfectly to its sociopolitical moment as the Renaissance tour. Beychella , to be sure, Beyoncé's 2018 culture-shifter devoted to Black feminism, HBCUs, and the nuances of various Black artforms. Before that, perhaps Madonna's 1990 Blond Ambition tour, when she performed “Vogue” in an earlier era of heightened homophobia and transphobia, flaunting her sexuality and power in a time when silence equaled death . As it happened, Madonna was in the audience in New Jersey , witnessing Beyoncé perform her Black woman-elevating remix of “Vogue,” as a sort of passing of the torch between Queens of Pop.

Maybe some of that freedom was simply Beyoncé living her house diva dreams, a significant statement in itself. So many pop house divas of the past were erased from the popular record of the time, a record that is only beginning to be corrected . The iconic Martha Wash, of the Weather Girls, spent the fatphobic ’80s and ’90s suing for her own credits , after being replaced with younger and thinner women lip-syncing her vocals in the videos for Black Box’s “Everybody Everybody” and C+C Music Factory's “Gonna Make You Sweat.” Those lawsuits were perhaps the best known, but similar stories of erasure have played out with Loleatta Holloway , Jocelyn Brown , Kelli-Leigh , and more, where Black women vocalists transformed scores of songs into indelible classics, but are viewed by their male producers and record labels as throwaway, mere clips to sample, or tertiary to the real genius.

Beyoncé placing herself in front of this history won’t right those wrongs, and it is easy to ascribe dreams and aspirations onto her. As with many pop stars, her moves don’t always square with the values she performs . But she does have the cultural power to reorient the narrative even just a little, whether centering house divas or paying homage to LGBTQ Black and Latine ballroom originators. (Plus vocalists are infinitely more interesting to watch than DJs, particularly in a climate when staring has supplanted dancing.) It is not uncommon to get hyperbolic about Beyoncé. She has, like many pop stars, been deified to the point of Veladoras hawked by candle companies, her beatific visage and unfailingly sick fits replacing the benevolent gaze and gently draped robe of La Virgen. During her tour she assumed the role of the conduit and protector; she is the “Mother of the House of Renaissance ,” as a voice-over goes in the tour as she fans herself in the style of the ball. A house mother is the keeper of her children, and her children are genuflected. But the Renaissance tour’s most important act was bringing Beyoncé’s fans together in massive numbers, creating a space in which joy can build and attendees can experience sweet release. That’s what dance music, at its beating heart, is about.

How Beyoncé’s Egyptian Tour Photographer Found Courage in the Shadow of Cancer

mm

By Mirna Khaled Sayed

beyonce tour photographer

Just as Yosra El-Essawy, Beyoncé’s former official tour photographer, was drawn to capture the deepest expressions of humanity, her life story was in itself a portrait of humanity – a heartening story of resilience, beautiful strength and courage that overshadows the struggles and pain she had to endure.

Before landing the job of her dreams with Beyoncé , El-Essawy worked tremendously hard as a wedding photographer between London, New York, and Egypt. Born to Egyptian parents in London, the name ‘ Yosra ’ was not randomly chosen, but carried its own symbolic meaning since birth, El-Esssawy shared in a Facebook post. Though her mother was tiresomely rushed to the hospital, El-Essawy arrived shockingly “with ease” without much help from the doctor. Since then, her birth represented the word “yosra”, which is mentioned in a verse in the holy Quran: “Surely, with hardship comes ease” (Quran 94:5).

Her name went on to shape her entire life philosophy. With hardship, and with rigorous passion and drive, she became a highly energetic and independent woman who was always scheduled and busy, and chased her love for art relentlessly. Though she initially received an honors degree in physiology from University College London (UCL), she chose instead to sacrifice a stable life and follow her “gut”, as she felt happier while painting or editing photographs.

At its core, photography is about making an authentic, human connection, and capturing real human stories, which is why El-Essawy started out as a wedding photographer. “It’s a beautiful story to tell, and I loved it,” she said. But there was a point in her life where felt that she needed to achieve beyond what she was achieving. “I just said, you know what? It’s time to let it all go, jump off the side of the cliff again, and just believe the net will appear.”

El-Essawy auditioned to become a celebrity tour photographer, and just five days before Beyonce’s “Mrs. Carter Show World Tour,” she got the job.

“Beyoncé specifically is the only celebrity that I’ve ever vocalized wanting to photograph, ever,” she says . “There’s just such a humanity and beauty about her that I’ve always seen.”

Yet, the timing of the tour was “divinely timed,” she once said , as just six weeks after experiencing the best times of her life in the tour, she was diagnosed with stage four oeseophageal cancer.

“God has the ability to make amazing from terrible,” she added.

The incredible amount of love and support from Beyoncé’s fans around the world helped bring ease in her hardships of enduring the disease and seeing the silver lining. In a number of Facebook posts, she thoughtfully contemplated life’s lessons; revealing how humanity can also exist in the shadow of struggle.

“Never before have I known myself better, have I felt so secure, so loved, so grateful, never have I been so present. I was always going, always dreaming up my next moves, always on the run, never stopping to take stock of where I was and give myself credit for what I had already achieved. Then the slug came into my life, like a scene from a movie and it changed it up, broke down everything I knew. Took me off tour. Slowed me right down. Forced me to just sit, to breathe, to just be,” she wrote .

El-Essawy passed away at just the age of 33 in 2014, losing her battle to cancer. There is little documentation of her life and work online, but her story carries a timeless life lesson for all of us: whatever hardship one has to endure, there will always be a silver lining to bring ease and relief.

“Whatever and whoever you love, keep loving and trust that the universe will conspire to give you what you want and what you need. That love has been my ease in my hardship and I am forever grateful,” she said in one of her final posts.

Blair Caldwell moved across the country with just $1,000 in his bank account—now he’s Beyoncé’s go-to photographer. Here’s how he did it

Beyoncé posing on horseback for an album cover

In 2006, while his high school classmates were busy with extracurriculars like football, basketball, and other sports “on grassy old fields,” Blair Caldwell was hyper-focused on honing a new passion he discovered his sophomore year while waiting for a ride home from school.

Since his parents would pick him up late because of their demanding work schedules, Caldwell would pass the time by staging photo shoots with his older sister, who loved modeling. He captured his shots on a Razr flip phone he borrowed from his sister.

“My sister and I would take that time after school to go to the library to print out all the photos I had taken of her,” the Tyler, Texas, native told Fortune . “Eventually, instead of doing homework, we would be emailing photos to the printers in the library.”

It wasn’t long before the images caused a buzz around the school. “My sister’s friends started noticing her photos and asked who took them,” Caldwell recalled. “She told them it was me, and from then on, I started taking pictures of everyone.”

Caldwell’s newfound popularity as a photographer motivated him to dream bigger.

“I would write it on my homework,” he said. “When I got done early in class, I would turn my paper over and just draw Hollywood and cameras and all that stuff.”

Now 33, Caldwell has a successful career as one of Hollywood’s well-established photographers , snapping celebrities like Grammy award winners Beyoncé , Cardi B, and SZA , plus the likes of Kylie Jenner , Normani, and Michael B. Jordan .

In an interview with Fortune , the photographer revealed how he went from juggling novel jobs to shooting Hollywood’s most notable stars, and how he’s leveraging artificial intelligence for his most recent work.

The art of opportunity

The path to Hollywood success for Caldwell wasn’t glamorous at first, and started with just $1,000 in his bank account.

After graduating from the Art Institute of Dallas with an associate’s degree in photography, Caldwell packed up his belongings and moved over 1,300 miles to Los Angeles, a city he’d idolized as a child watching music videos on MTV and BET.

“My family was like, ‘Okay, go, just make sure you’ve got a plan,” he said. “I literally had no plan…I hit the ground running.”

To make ends meet while finding gigs, Caldwell accepted an array of odd jobs, like auditioning for competition shows including The X Factor , The Voice , and American Idol , volunteering to be a live-studio audience member, and offering to take $50 headshots for people in a local park.

“I was doing whatever I could to try and get my name out there and try to get in touch with someone that can help me get to the next spot,” Caldwell said.

His connections paid off. While sleeping on a mattress in a friend’s living room, Caldwell was awoken by an urgent phone call from his mentor in the city, asking if he could conduct a photoshoot for R&B singer Chrisette Michele. Without any preparation or planning, Caldwell immediately grabbed his equipment and sped off to meet the artist, who needed to document her Grammy nomination.

Caldwell said Michele “took me under her wing” and enlisted him to travel around the country with her, shooting album covers, maintaining her YouTube vlog, and capturing images for her Instagram account.

Other stars took notice. Glee actress Amber Riley and then–Fifth Harmony singer Normani asked Caldwell for their own shoots.

“I remember [Normani] saying, ‘I want to hire you as my personal photographer,’” said Caldwell. “I finally felt like I was getting my foot in the door.”

Opportunity calls

As his résumé grew, so did the number of calls he fielded from eager clients, including a chance in 2018 to photograph one of music’s biggest titans. But it was an opportunity he almost turned down.

“I was sitting in church one day, and I got a text: ‘Are you available to do photos?’” he recalled. “I’m like, ‘Sure, who’s it for?’”

His question went unanswered, and his friend replied, saying the mysterious client could not be disclosed.

“I was like, I have to go lead worship at six o’clock, so I kinda need to know who this is because I can’t just leave church,” he said. “At that time, I literally was begging God to give me a sign to show me something.”

Caldwell had convinced himself that he hit the end of the road in his career and would have to stop pursuing his dream in order to secure a traditional nine-to-five job for stability. But he gave this mysterious opportunity a shot: He drove his car—a 2007 Toyota Scion that “only blew out cold air”—up the Los Angeles hills to an unknown location for the shoot.

When he arrived, he was greeted by a drop-top baby-blue Rolls-Royce in the driveway, plus a security guard at the entrance who requested that he sign a paper.

“I didn’t read it. I didn’t care,” Caldwell recalled. “I said, ‘I’m just glad to sign it.’”

As he made his way past security, he spotted a woman on a balcony. “She said, ‘How are you? I’m Beyoncé.’”

Over the course of the photo shoot, the two bonded over Caldwell’s accent and their shared Texas roots.

“I just couldn’t believe it, everything I had prayed for had come,” Caldwell said. “That was the beginning of everything.”

Homecoming

Days after his first photoshoot with Beyoncé, Caldwell eagerly refreshed his Instagram feed, waiting to see the pictures he just captured pop up on his timeline. Eventually, a few days of anticipation turned into a month, and the original cloud-nine feeling started to fade.

“I thought that she hated the photos because I didn’t see them come out,” he said, recalling times he couldn’t get out of bed until four o’clock in the afternoon from depression.

But a month later, while sitting in a living room with friends, Caldwell received another vague text asking if he knew how to shoot live shows, a skill he learned while working with his earlier clients Chrisette Michelle and Amber Riley. He rushed to the location, and was greeted with dancers, bands, lighting crews, and videographers all preparing for one of Beyoncé’s most notable productions yet : her 2018 “Homecoming” performance at Coachella .

“It was just like a huge entertainment college,” Caldwell said. “I just was bright like a kid on my first day with my little bag.”

An homage to Black HBCU culture, the performance netted 41 million viewers in 232 countries, surpassing the record of most-viewed performance at any festival.

Today, Caldwell still serves as the singer’s frequent photographer—he even did the cover art for Beyonce’s eighth studio album, Cowboy Carter , which released Friday.

AI-infused photography

Capturing Beyoncé’s Coachella performance required Caldwell to present his vision to her team with mood boards well ahead of the performance, a strategy he previously had not followed. Years later, he’s embraced the mood-boards strategy and is utilizing a new tool to make them more effective: artificial intelligence.

Caldwell says tools like AI platform Tome refine his workflows and cut down on production time by planning shoots in advance.

“When I discovered Tome, it was as if I had an assistant helping me,” he said. “I would input some images, and Tome’s AI would lay it out in a visually compelling way that helped not only me to crystallize my vision, but it actually became something I could share with clients.”

Although he’s still tinkering with the technology, Caldwell says he can appreciate the versatility of AI.

“If I needed to find photos, I could just type in the type of photos I wanted and AI would find the right picture,” Caldwell said. “It’s literally a lifesaver. It’s made my job so easy.”

The AI tool helps Caldwell visualize the “mood, aesthetic, lighting, clothing, scenery, and photographic style” he aims for in each shoot.

“I do love that it gives you an outlook on what you might not have,” he said. “You can be looking for something in particular, and an AI will give me an example of what I’m looking for, but show me in a different way.”

A 2023 Pew survey shows Americans are increasingly cautious about the growing role of AI in their lives and jobs, but Caldwell says he’s in favor of the tech and doesn’t believe AI will replace human photographers anytime soon.

“[Photography] is real, shooting someone is real,” Caldwell said. “Being in front of someone is an experience.”

Beyoncé's 'cowboy carter' is a portrait of the artist getting joyously weird.

Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter has ignited discourse about the place of Black musicians in country music. But it's also evidence of its creator's desire to break genre walls by following her most eccentric impulses.

This essay first appeared in the NPR Music newsletter. Sign up for early access to articles like this one, Tiny Desk exclusives, listening recommendations and more.

After two months of anticipation, Cowboy Carter has been out in the world for nearly a fortnight, and the discourse is thick as sawdust on a honky-tonk floor. Beyoncé's spangled opus, as lengthy and florid as a Sergio Leone classic — it really could have been called The Good, the Bey and the Ugly -- has generated more think pieces than any pop phenomenon since her friendly rival Taylor's Eras tour.

I've kept track of the coverage of Cowboy Carter and it's, well, something. Actually it's everything, ranging from paeans to (not too many) pans . Not weighing in hasn't been an option for most music writers, who have spilled tons of ink documenting the album's backstory, tracing its references, and examining its work of legacy building. What could I add to the discourse? Well, this: Whether it's considered a champion's walk, an overlong stumble, a powerful political gesture or a highly personal cri de couer — one thing Cowboy Carter is, undeniably even if no one has said it, is weird. And that's a wonderful thing.

10 takeaways from Beyoncé's new album, 'Cowboy Carter'

10 takeaways from beyoncé's new album, 'cowboy carter'.

On 'Cowboy Carter,' Beyoncé's country is as broad as the public she serves

Album Review

On 'cowboy carter,' beyoncé's country is as broad as the public she serves.

Not that Beyoncé herself would ever admit to her own eccentricity. She's declared herself a diligent student of the genre she sought to revise, and many of the touchstones on this massive grab bag of ballads and bangers check the boxes of cultural intervention. She features Dolly and Willie; shows us her boots, brand-name jeans and whiskey bottle; includes a murder ballad and her perspective on that ultimate country emblem, the American flag. (She sees it as red: blood, Alabama clay, indigenous people.)

Her inclusion of the undersung Black Grand Ole Opry pioneer Linda Martell as a collaborator nods to efforts to rectify historical omissions that have been going on in and around Nashville for years — shoutout to the Black Opry crew, to artist and radio host Rissi Palmer and to Martell's granddaughter, who continues to crowd-fund a documentary that Beyoncé really should just finance.

How Black women reclaimed country and Americana music in 2021

Best Music Of 2021

How black women reclaimed country and americana music in 2021.

But the way she assembles these hardly unique elements is startling. Sidestepping either a conventional foray into country's traditional sounds or a risk-averse pop approach that would just use those elements as window-dressing, she and her dozens of collaborators assemble a cosmic omnibus of reference points while drilling down on her long-standing obsessions. While it's correct to call this album an epic and a strong political statement, it's an idiosyncratic one, more akin to Jim Jarmusch's off-kilter visions of American heritage — especially Mystery Train -- than, say, Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon .

It may seem off to identify eccentricity in a project that includes radio-ready Miley Cyrus and Post Malone collabs, and which was quickly endorsed by none other than the Vice President. Yet the first thing I thought of when I sat down to listen to Cowboy Carter was an album from 1967 that's beloved by many rock cognoscenti for its very peculiarness. Van Dyke Parks 's Song Cycle was the first solo album by the noted composer, arranger and producer. It is a shambling, sunnily psychedelic portrait of California living from the perspective of a transplanted white East Coaster with Southern roots. (Parks was born in Mississippi but grew up in Princeton singing in a boys' choir.)

Rich with strings and gorgeous melodies and rife with punnily poetical lines like, "Nowadays a Yankee dread not take his time to wend to sea" in a song about Parks's own experience trying to make it within the L.A. music biz hustle, no less, Song Cycle features Parks's birdlike warble, and by birdlike, I don't mean Beyoncé's operatic forays on new songs like "DAUGHTER" or "FLAMENCO," but Tweety Bird or the Peanuts ' Woodstock. Parks made the unfinished psychedelic masterpiece Smile with Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys and later worked with 21st-century visionaries Joanna Newsom and Gaby Moreno, among others. But Song Cycle is his strange baby. Though it's a rich work that offers real insight into the melting late 1960s American West Coast dream, Song Cycle is not for everyone. Parks experimented joyfully with song structure, sound effects and lyricism, painting a floating world that requires time and sympathy to comprehend.

Cowboy Carter sounds absolutely nothing like Song Cycle , yet I thought about the latter as I sunk into the non-linear, fragmentary experience of listening to it. I appreciate how Beyoncé sticks to her guns throughout, just as Parks maintained his whimsicality and dreaminess. Stacked harmonies do here what strings do on Song Cycle , lending grandeur to the opening "American Requiem" and tenderness to the ballads "MY ROSE" and "FLAMENCO" (the latter pairs them artfully with Andalusian hand-claps); yet those vocals also set a kind of Broadway stage for the songs, rendering them winsomely surreal. The album's employment of banjo and pedal steel signify country, sure, but they're used in unusual ways, as Parks uses accordion and balalaika. The distortions are highly individualistic, nothing like what current country sounds like. (Exception: that Post Malone duet, "LEVII'S JEANS.") Same with the roots references. The interlude "OH LOUISIANA" speeds up a Chuck Berry vocal to turn that rock and roll founder into helium. On the tour de force Tina Turner tribute "YA YA," Beyoncé begins with a spoken exchange with her background singers that calls back to her campy turn in Austin Powers in Goldmember as well as to Southern rap's most glorious weirdo breakthrough, Outkast's "Hey Ya!" Sure, this is historical work, but it's hardly textbook.

These tracks stand alongside others in a sprawl of concepts, tempos and tones until Cowboy Carter turns into a full-on megamix, its final four tracks returning to the dance party of Renaissance , abruptly concluded with a literal showstopper, the Broadway-ready "AMEN." The album is immersive, but it's a jerky, bucking rodeo ride, not a narrative that lends itself to easy absorption. And through it all Beyoncé bends country and blues tropes — those two genres are inseparable, something Cowboy Carter acknowledges — to the themes she can never abandon: the perils of attempted monogamy, the joy and terror involved in mothering and her own determination to be great, an ambition that she views as a responsibility more than a privilege.

Concept albums can be relatively straightforward, like Willie Nelson's classic Red Headed Stranger , but often they do come out ornate and leaky as their makers dump all of their ideas within the frame. Beyoncé nods sonically to a few that came after Song Cycle . At certain points, Sly and the Family Stone's murky funk on There's a Riot Goin' On comes to mind. Michael Jackson never made a full-on concept album, but that tarnished legend requires mention because Beyoncé's massive ambition rivals his more than anyone's. (Maybe Madonna's; she did make a concept record, Erotica . Or that soundtrack-maker Prince's.)

More recent touchstones include the high-concept forays of Janelle Monaé, whose " Tightrope " seems as much a touchstone for "YA YA" as does Tina Turner's shimmy, and the efforts of two of her collaborators on Cowboy Carter . Raphael Saadiq, who co-produced several tracks, released a similarly massive and emotionally affecting concept album , Jimmy Lee , in 2019. And the Virginia-born multihyphenate Shaboozie, a visionary character whom Beyoncé has apparently recognized as a kindred soul, paid tribute to the landscapes and culture of his native state on his own 2022 disquisition on the same themes as Cowboy Carter . Its title? Cowboys Live Forever, Outlaws Never Die .

Beyoncé is getting played on country radio. Could her success help other Black women?

Beyoncé is getting played on country radio. Could her success help other Black women?

When I associate Cowboy Carter with these equally adventurous and strange concept albums and the outsiders who made them, I don't mean to reduce the impact of her work or her centrality as an era-defining artist. Instead, I'm trying to free this fun and unfettered music from the burden of predefined significance. Beyoncé has, by her own will as well as her fans's needs, become what Doreen St. Felix calls an "übermatriarch," not only a biological mother but the nurturing, burdened mother of all of her faithful — and of Black America, a role she inherited and claimed from the equally eccentric and more reluctantly ennobled Aretha Franklin. The seriousness of her responsibilities has earned her a lot: millions nearing billions of dollars, a place among heads of state and a fan base that strikes fear in the hearts of naysayers. But for an artist, such success ultimately confines. Only a few have been able to remain playful and light-footed as their public images have hardened into marble.

Two such artists, as it happens, are ones Beyoncé directly takes on in Cowboy Carter : The Beatles, whose members never stopped releasing humorous and even nonsense songs alongside their wedding-and-funeral ballads and politicized anthems; and Dolly Parton, the most agile pop star of all, who's crossed into nearly every category that's interested her with her own birdlike laugh and dimpled smile. Dolly herself has deep and strange predilections: her many songs about dead children, for example, or her way of turning sexuality cartoonish not only as comic relief, but as a weapon. It's her oddball side as well as her musical genius that's allowed her to slip through so many doors.

Beyoncé did not create Cowboy Carter to honor white artists like Parton, but she made a wise decision by invoking her as a partner and a patron saint. In the spoken interlude that precedes Beyoncé's rewrite of her classic "Jolene," Parton refers to Beyoncé's famous line about a white woman's allure for her Black husband, "Becky with the good hair," as "that hussy with the good hair." She drawls out the insult, though, as if she's in the middle of a Hee Haw skit: huzzzzy . It's a goofy, enjoyably destabilizing moment — an eccentric gesture that reminds us that as serious as music can be, it's most powerful when its subversions are also fun.

Beyoncé fans had spent the day racing from store to store, searching for their first cowboy hat or pair of white cowboy boots. They brought out the denim jackets lined with silver fringe, the brown and white cow print skirts and the silver rhinestones to stud just above their eyelid.

Then on Friday night, they headed downtown to the famed strip of honky-tonks and bars on Lower Broadway in Nashville to listen to Beyoncé’s new album, “Cowboy Carter,” a tapestry of not only country music, but also contemporary pop music, funk and other genres.

“I’ve never seen so many people that look like me in cowboy hats in my life,” Nia Blair, 24, marveled, dancing in her own pair of new boots. She added, “One album did all this.”

There was no shortage of celebrations of the superstar’s new album this week: There were listening parties from Atlanta to Houston , a fan day at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland and a seemingly endless stream of on-theme posts from brands and politicians .

But this is Nashville, where the iron gates of the country music business and its radio stations have fortified its brand as “Music City” with a history of minimizing the women and musicians of color who helped build its foundation or sought to expand its horizons.

It is also where some of its fandom and critics rebuffed Beyoncé’s performance at the Country Music Association Awards with the Chicks in 2016, a moment implied to be the catalyst for the creation of the album.

This party was different.

“Tonight is really just a message saying that we are here in Nashville,” said Dede Neahn West, who helped organize the listening party on the rooftop of Acme Feed & Seed, a refurbished farm store that now boasts four floors of music and events. “It’s just giving honor and celebrating, and celebrating our culture.”

Just over a week before the album was set to be released, Ms. West and Aaron Bell, a longtime Nashville producer and musician , began talking about putting together an event in the city to bring Black fans together to celebrate what many see as the triumph of the album’s artistry, the acknowledgment of the extra barriers musicians of color face and the promise of more to come.

“Being a Black person here — Broadway has nothing that reflects us,” said Mr. Bell, a D.J. who frequently performs as A.B. Eastwood and like others, said he has found a more inclusive space to perform at Acme Feed & Seed. “It was important to do it on Broadway.”

“Nashville, we love you,” he said, but, “we don’t have to wait on anybody to give us the OK.”

The release of the album has jolted the country music industry. But it has also created an exhausting and emotional whirlwind of attention for the legions of musicians, producers and artists who had already worked for years in Nashville to create a space for Black musicians in a genre they loved, some said in interviews.

“Beyoncé has brought us all together for this night alone, which we can be grateful for,” said Tanner Davenport, co-director of the Black Opry , which has given a platform to Black country and folk artists, including through a touring revue , since 2021. But he added, the reason he and others “stay in this area is because of the community that’s here.”

There is not yet an indication that the Nashville conglomerate of labels and executives has drastically changed its approach, particularly given its lasting dependence on terrestrial radio . That has left open questions about whether financial and institutional opportunities will come to other Black country artists, even as the initial songs from “Cowboy Carter” have broken country music records .

“The greatest opportunity that we have for change here is the fact that she’s exposed the idea of country music to a ton of people who now seemed more receptive to engaging with it — which the fact that they were not receptive is through no fault of their own,” said Holly G, the founder of the Black Opry .

She added, “I think what we have an opportunity for now is to build a fan base that can exist and thrive outside of these spaces that have not made us feel welcome.”

And the listening party on Friday, titled “Kinfolk,” was a signal that perhaps those fans could be drawn in.

On Friday night, past where bachelorette parties and tourists flocked to the rest of the famed strip of honky-tonks and bars owned by stars like Kid Rock, Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan, hundreds of people brought the rooftop at Acme Feed & Seed to its capacity.

A line of fans in fringe, denim and leather snaked through the floor below, as others crowded the rooftop, posed for photos with friends and listened to calls to buy more records and tickets for other artists. Attendees spoke about how this was the first country album they had listened to in its entirety, how it had prompted them to begin listening to other Black country artists or the joy they felt being surrounded by other Black country music fans.

“We’ve never felt comfortable even playing music — country music — on Broadway, but it’s nice to be here tonight with people that respect what we do and respect what we look like,” said Brandon Campbell, who performs with his twin brother, Derek, as the country duo The Kentucky Gentlemen.

To celebrate a Black woman’s country album on Broadway given a decade of challenging experiences in the city, he added, “is really big, mentally, physically, emotionally for us.”

Video of the 2016 performance at the Country Music Association Awards played on loop on televisions behind the bar, as bartenders served drink specials like The Bey-Hive, a discounted cocktail can, and Texas Hold ’Em, a whiskey sour made with whiskey from a Black-owned distillery in Nashville.

“It’s a lot of fun, and seeing the fact that people are actually willing to dress up and come out?” said MaKayla Stovall, 25. “It makes me feel a certain amount of pride, being Black and from the South.”

Brandon Robinson, 27, said, “I hate that she didn’t have a good time last time, so I’m glad that we can have a good time for her.”

When it was time to start playing the album, there was raucous applause, phones and studded cowboy hats held high into the night sky in time with the music.

And when two of the Black women featured on the album, Brittney Spencer and Reyna Roberts , appeared onstage together, the crowd roared. A woman in a cowboy hat and long white coat wiped away tears, as the two women sang along to their own harmonies on the album’s cover of the Beatles song “Blackbird.”

“This is incredible,” Ms. Spencer told the crowd before the next song began to play. “I love Black Nashville.”

Beyoncé Fuels Tour Rumors With "Been Country" Website

If Beyoncé is going to do anything, it’s wage war on our wallets with a surprise announcement. So, when the “ 16 CARRIAGES ” singer unveiled “Been Country,” a new website landing page, fans immediately saw it as a subtle confirmation of a rumored tour and joined forces, begging her to relax and delay it until 2025.

One fan wrote , “Beyoncé I beg.. my pockets are empty.” Another tweeted a video of Angela Bassett from Waiting To Exhale where she questioned, “What am I supposed to do for money?” Scottie Beam reiterated , “We just paid rent @Beyonce” as someone else offered alternative options. “A deluxe ….. a skincare line …… cecred plus ….. cowboy lingerie ….. idc JUST PLEASE DONT LET THIS BE AN ANNOUNCEMENT FOR TOUR,” they wrote .

Initially, the “Been Country” site redirected visitors to a list of the RENAISSANCE: A Film By Beyoncé credits. Now, it’s a splash page featuring Bey in an American flag get-up, a photo of a young Celestine Beyince aka Mama Tina, a picture of a young Bey performing at the Texas Sweetheart Pageant, a banjo, and the following quote: “This ain’t a country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.”

The-Dream tweeted about the anticipated tour on March 30, writing, “So proud! BB Let’s Go. This tour bout to B’ Incredible!” Upon the release of COWBOY CARTER , Bey’s dance captain Amari Marshall further fueled rumors of a tour with an Instagram post that reads, “The Boss has done it again. It's about to be a KNTRY Summer.”

Thus far, the new website aligned with the release of Bey’s new single, “ TEXAS HOLD ‘EM (PONY UP REMIX) .” The tour section of the Houston native’s official website (see above) currently houses all things from the RENAISSANCE World Tour including its credits, the remaining merchandise on Amazon, the film trailers, and photos organized by city.

Beyoncé’s Daughter Rumi, 6, Breaks Musical Record Held by Sister Blue Ivy

Beyoncé’s youngest daughter rumi, 6, broke a record held by her older sister, blue ivy, 12, for her feature on cowboy carter ’s “protector.”.

Beyoncé 's girls are running the world.

Jay-Z and the "Texas Hold ‘Em" singer's younger daughter, Rumi , just snatched a new record—right from her older sister Blue Ivy .

As Rumi—twin to brother Sir —was featured on the "Protector" track of Cowboy Carter , she became the youngest woman to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 in history at just 6 years old.

Track four on Beyoncé's new country album, which currently sits at number 42 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, features Rumi asking her mother, "Mom, can I hear the lullaby, please?" and surpasses the feature Blue, 12, had on Beyoncé's "Brown Skin Girl" in 2019, which peaked at number 76. Blue sang on the Lion King   movie track at just 7 years old.

And while Rumi may have surpassed her older sister in being the youngest woman to ever chart on the Billboard Hot list, Blue still holds a record for being the youngest overall person to claim a spot on any Billboard chart .

Blue was credited under the moniker "B.I.C." on Jay-Z's "Glory" in 2012, which features her coos just after she was born. The song did not hit Billboard's hot list, but it did chart on Hot Rap Songs and Hot R&B charts.

Blue doesn't have a feature on her mom's latest album, but she is certainly still following in her footsteps. In fact, the tween often appeared on stage alongside her mom during the Renaissance tour as a backup dancer during "My Power."

"I feel like now my mindset has changed," Blue said in the Renaissance concert film of continuing to join her mother on stage, despite criticism of her early performances. "I actually have to wake up in the morning and go to rehearsals, and I actually have to work hard."

Beyoncé and Jay-Z were initially hesitant to allow Blue to join her mother's show, but her performances eventually made them very proud.

"Blue is fearless," Beyoncé said of her daughter in the film . "What I love the most is she becomes fearless, and I can see the growth and the confidence and her trusting herself more and more."

And while Blue continues to build a name for herself in the industry, it's exciting for fans to get a bold introduction to Rumi's own power on the record-breaking track.

Read on for more of Rumi and Sir's best moments.

A sweet feature

The "Texas Hold 'Em" singer featured daughter Rumi Carter on her new country album Cowboy Carter .

"Protector," the fourth song on the project, begins with Rumi asking, "Mom, can I hear the lullaby, please?" The clip leads into an acoustic ballad reflecting on her deep love for her children

While pregnant with her twins, the award-winning singer gave an incredible performance at the 2017 Grammys. It's safe to say  Rumi and Sir Carter had the best seats in the house!

A month after welcoming her twins, the proud mom took to Instagram to gush over the babies. She wrote , "Sir Carter and Rumi 1 month today."

In July 2022, Beyoncé thanked her kids ahead of her  Renaissance album release.

"I want to give a special thank you to Rumi, Sir and Blue for allowing me the space, creativity, and inspiration," she wrote on her website alongside this photo. "And a special thanks to my husband and muse, who held me down during those late nights in the studio."

The group posed together as The Proud Family for Halloween 2023.

The Houston native flashes a huge smile as she carries her babies.

Rumi joined Bey and Madonna for a backstage tour photo in July 2023 alongside Madonna's daughters Mercy, Stella and Estere.

The twins adorably take a dip in the ocean in matching outfits.

The father-daughter duo looks at the amazing views as they enjoy a boat ride together.

The "Spirit" singer kicked off 2021 with a sweet video that captured heartwarming moments with her family . "Cheers to a New Year Beyhive," she captioned her Instagram. "2020 divided us and united us. Most could not see loved ones and we felt too many losses, but we were united by our humanity."

To celebrate her 38th birthday, the award-winning singer shared behind-the-scenes pics of how she rang in her special day. In one photo, her kids help her blow out her candles.

The "Black Parade" singer honors her son during the Black Is King visual album, writing, "And to all our sons and daughters, the sun and the moon. Bow for you. You are the keys to the kingdom."

A family affair! Beyoncé strikes a pose with her daughters, as well as her mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson , during the "Brown Skin Girl" music video in Black Is King .

A moment that's too cute for words!

In March 2021, The Lion King actress shared rare photos  of her little ones enjoying a beach day in Malibu, Calif.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

beyonce tour photographer

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

beyonce tour photographer

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

beyonce tour photographer

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

beyonce tour photographer

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

beyonce tour photographer

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

beyonce tour photographer

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

beyonce tour photographer

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

beyonce tour photographer

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!
