Review & Photography by Ritchie Birnie for MPM
The Atomic punk is back in Glasgow and he is determined to finish the run of this tour in style as he takes us all back to the 80s with his huge hits.
Support bands have changed numerous times before we even got to this point but opener Toyah did not let us down. Toyah, aaaaaah Toyah. Her and Miss Debbie Harry had a lot to answer for in the hormones levels of myself as a 13 year old back in 1980.
I still have my original vinyl copy of Anthem which I played this week and to be fair it has aged as well as I have(not at all) but Toyah looks great, adorned in her multi coloured dress, cheeky smile and happy attitude we are taken back over four decades as we blast through her hits the likes of opener “Thunder in the Mountains”, cover “Echo Beach” and “Neon Womb”.
It is amazing how music can hit you at times and as “It’s a Mystery” comes on I am taken back to sitting in front of a TV for Top of the Pops and staring at the pale face, bizarre make up and huge, bouncy ginger hair. Tonight was all about revisiting the past for me and the version tonight was spot on.
It is great to see the Toyah resurgence and I will be front and centre for her Sunday lunch tour next year.
For me Killing Joke were the weakness in the line up tonight. Although I had been a punk prior to my Rock and Metal pathway but even then Killing Joke did not do it for me.
Opener “Unspeakable” said it all for me I am afraid. Having front man Jaz coleman robotically shuffling around a stage in a jump suit with an angry look did not hold enough for me…sorry.
Now it was time for the Showman. The huge set is seen in its full spectacle and it was impressive. The rooftop like setting with Bladerunner billboards lighting the stage as the band came on.
Then we see the man that is as much Billy Idol as Billy is in guitarist Steve Stevens plug in his guitar and the night begins(and I am in awe being so close to this guitar hero of mine).
As “Dancing with Myself” kicks off Billy appears at the back of the stage on the roof setting and proceeds to gee up the crowd screaming Glasgow, Scotland c’mon so many times and so loud I am sure neighboring houses were shouting back shut up!!! we know where we are.
Jokes aside we are taken on a journey of Billy’s hit and he was on point. Vocals were perfect, the sneer was ever present and the guy looks far to good for his age.
I have seen Billy many times over the years, in recent times mostly at festivals but you still forget how immense the songs are and how huge he was in the 80s but looking at the stadium tours he still does and with everyone singing their hearts out here you know this will go down as a very memorable show.
On “Flesh for Fantasy” Billy gets the kit off(well his shirt and vest) and not only do I have hair envy…now I feel body shamed as well…thanks Billy.
It is not only about the hits though as we get recent song “Cage”, “Runnin’ From the Ghost” and “Speed” from the movie thrown in which was excellent as I do like my deep cuts.
Rarities aside the big moments are of course “Mony, Mony”, “Rebel Yell”, “Eyes without a Face” and of course the mega hit “White wedding” which sounds just as good today as it did then.
As much as this is about Billy’s legacy it is great to see him interact with the whole band and show such affection for his musical partner these last 40 years in Steve. I bet a huge portion of this crowd have no idea Steve has been there since the beginning of Billy going solo.
They probably do not know Steve won a Grammy for his work on the Top Gun theme (hence, why that was played) and if you were at the show and liked the flamenco guitar parts go check out his solo albums as well as Atomic Playboys as it is one hell of an underrated album.
Billy is now the Grandfather of punk but he still has the attitude, the talent and boy has he got the look. Billy has and is the real deal.

This was one tour I’d really been looking forward to, even more so after the cancellation of the 2022 dates. The lineup also seemed to be quite fluid, with The Go-Gos having to step down due to the change in dates, and then Television also having to cry off because of illness. We were left with a still very interesting and eclectic lineup of “classic artists” (people even older than me), each of whom have a rich collection of releases behind them.
Toyah had posted on Twitter that her set was to start a whopping 5 minutes early, but even with this warning the venue was still filling up as she started and played through her thirty minutes. This was an absolute shame as she was bloody brilliant. Riding the crest of a wave of public attention after her lockdown cover video sessions with husband Robert Fripp, her set was mainly made up of her own material with one cover (“Echo Beach” by Martha & The Muffins).
I confess to having lived through Toyah’s 80s peak, but knowing only a couple of her songs, but hearing her incredible voice soar through the likes of “It’s Mystery” and “I Want To Be Free” was a quality start to the evening. It’s perhaps rude to bring a lady’s age into it, but Toyah herself stated that she was 64 at one point, and honestly I can only hope to have that much energy in 15 or so years time. She cut a great figure on stage, and she didn’t drop a note with an incredible range.
While the set was a little low key with the band moderately stationary due to a lot of the space being taken up by the headliners’ kit, the music and Toyah’s incredible personality burst through and made the show seem larger than it was. I do wonder if some of the musicians were actually born when some of these songs were charting, but they certainly knew how to play them! Kudos to the lady herself for some genuinely nice one-on-one crowd interaction as well. Very much a pleasant person as well as a professional.
It’s worth noting that during Toyah’s set, fans seemed to be welcome to wander down to the front of the fully-seated venue and take photos, which was good to see. With the Hydro barely being half full (minus the curtained-off sections) by the time she finished, this didn’t make for an enormous crowd, but did make for some nice memories for those who were taking selfies.

And then came Killing Joke . Cited as hugely influential by acts such as Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, and a load more I could actually hear an edge of Ministry in their sound. Thing is, I was hearing pretty much one Ministry riff. Over and over. For about forty minutes with short breaks while Jaz Coleman talked to the crowd.
Obviously I just didn’t “get” Killing Joke, and I saw several people in the audience going a bit mental during their set. Not me, I’m afraid. I could pick up from their sound that they sat between the end of the flower power / drug fuelled rock scene of the late 60s and 70s, and on the cusp of the punk and electro-rock explosions of the 80s. However, I just found them rather droney and repetitive. Fair play to those who liked them, and I’ll always give a band a chance, but Killing Joke are on my “seen ’em… moving on now” list.
With a now-full Arena, a brief break and the lights dropped. A huge cheer erupted as the band walked on, the crowd leapt to their feet, and Billy Idol himself strode onto the scaffolding at the back of the stage. The last time I saw him play live, he was slightly older than I am now – back at Download 2005. Back then he was still climbing the rigging and bouncing about the stage, whereas tonight’s Billy didn’t have quite the physical energy. Having said that, if I hit 66 and I get women screaming at me (in the good way) when I take my top off I’ll be a happy bus pass owner.
His voice has definitely got a little more gravelly and growly, but there was no denying the passion he threw into the songs. And what a selection of songs! The show kicked off with a very old number – Generation X’s “Dancing With Myself”, and moved through Billy’s own “Cradle of Love” (which I genuinely heard for the first time as part of one of Weird Al’s polka numbers) and “Flesh For Fantasy”. With the traditional back-to-back opening trio out of the way, Billy gave a bit of backstory to the next number. “Cage” is the title track of Idol’s latest EP and is a flipping belter, but it really showed another side to him to hear him explain where the soul of the song came from… and to empathise with others who have their own cages to escape from.
Don’t fancy Patreon? Buy us a one-off beverage!
It was also the first song of the night where I really felt “Wow, he’s here”. Maybe it’s because it’s a newer song and therefore based on his voice as it is now, but his heart and soul just erupted for its all-too-short length. The rocking pace continued through soundtrack song “Speed”, and then last year’s Roadside EP got a showing with “Bitter Taste”. I’m assuming it would have featured more had the tour taken place twelve months ago, but I’m not complaining as the set tonight also included “Runnin’ From The Ghost”, my personal favourite from the Cage EP.
Generation X were revisited once again, along with a great story about punks pogoing off a bus, with “One Hundred Punks”, around a couple of absolutely blistering solos from guitarist Steve Stevens – a man with parents who follow the same naming methodology as those of Biff Byford, so good they named him twice. Kind of. Stevens is a legend. Seen Top Gun ? It’s Stevens’ guitar playing throughout. He won a Grammy for that. Billy was phenomenal tonight, but Stevens… I could happily listen to an album of him freestyling and riffing, and think I’ll be digging around to see if such a thing exists.
The main set ended with a rousing “Rebel Yell”, before a three-song encore which culminated (no surprises) in “White Wedding”. I’d heard a couple of people from earlier gigs say that Billy appeared a little breathless at times, but this definitely wasn’t the case in Glasgow. His vocal range might not be what it was 17 years ago, but his passion and ability to engage with a crowd are still there 100%.
A great gig, headlined by a genuine entertainer who I hope has the longevity of Alice Cooper and the Stones so that I get the chance to see him again!

No Killing Joke are not just one Ministry riff. Without KJ there would have been no NIN or Ministry. They are legends but also as a hypothetical neutral I would also suggest: write properly please and take your time and think before writing, avoiding spelling mistakes and mistakes about band members names etc. Might help.
I apologise that my opinion differs from yours. Actually, no I don’t. I will apologise for and rectify any incorrect member names, though, if you’d care to tell me which ones they are.
I did state that Killing Joke are influential and respect that. I also, personally, didn’t like them and found their set tedious. The two viewpoints are not contradictory.

Billy Idol the punk pioneer turned global superstar is back! Coming to Glasgow’s OVO Hydro on 21st October 2022.
Coming of age with the MTV generation, new wave punk Billy Idol is one of most iconic pop megastars of the 80s.
Picking his stage name as a retort to all the angry schoolteachers who accused him of being lazy. William Broad grew up in the south of England before becoming ‘Billy Idol’ as an angsty teen obsessed with the Sex Pistols. Briefly joining Chelsea as a guitarist before realising he was better in front of the mic. Idol left the band to co-found Generation X with Tony James, John Towe and Bob Andrews.
Now sporting a spiky blonde crewcut (thanks to advise from Chelsea’s Gene October), Idol honed his image as a well as his sound. As much inspired by ’60s pop as modern punk. When Generation X broke up in 1981, Idol moved to New York to find a manager, secure a solo deal and take on the world. By July of 1982, Idol had done all three.
Releasing his self-titled debut album
Releasing his self-titled debut album to universal acclaim, Idol’s first solo record boasts some of his biggest hits. Dancing With Myself (borrowed from Generation X’s back catalogue) and Hot In The City became instant dance rock floor fillers. But it was White Wedding Pt 1 that instantly shot Idol to international superstardom. Helped in part by the recent emergence of MTV, Idol’s white spikes and Elvis sneer made him one of the first stars of the music video era. Fusing classic pop rock with snarly punk attitude to helm pop’s Second British Invasion.
Bigger things followed in 1984 with the release of Rebel Yell . The double platinum record that added another handful of iconic anthems to his setlist including Eyes Without A Face . As well as Flesh For Fantasy and the album’s bestselling title track that has since become his signature tune. Idol continued to sell out arenas around the world for the next few years. In 1987’s Whiplash Smile and 1990’s Charmed Life gave him his third and fourth consecutive platinum hits.
Caught up the rock’n’roll lifestyle before being involved in a serious motorbike accident. Idol took a break from music and dabbled in acting (appearing as Jim Morrison’s drinking buddy in Oliver Stone’s The Doors . Before resurfacing for 1993’s Cyberpunk with new set of dreadlocks and an even newer sound that experimented with techno, dance and Velvet Underground covers.
Cameo Appearances
Another dark period followed for Idol but a cameo appearance in Adam Sandler comedy The Wedding Singer helped him reach a new generation of fans. Returning with 2005’s Devil’s Playground after a 12-year wait. Idol reinvented himself with a heavy, angrier sound that reached right back to his pre-pop days. Right before crooning his way through an album of Christmas covers on 2006’s Happy Holidays .
The late noughties saw Idol embracing his own legacy as he released a bestselling greatest hits album. He joined a massive world tour with Def Leppard and took the main stage at 2010’s Download festival. Taking stock of his storied career in 2014, Idol released an autobiography ( Dancing With Myself ). Alongside a confessional album, Kings And Queens Of The Underground . Weaving samples of Idol’s most iconic songs into a varied tracklist that covered the ups and downs of his whole discography. The album became the highest-debuting record of his career.
In 2020 Idol appeared as a guest vocalist on Miley Cyrus’ Plastic Hearts . In September 2021 he released new EP, The Roadside . Recorded during the Covid-19 pandemic with long-time guitarist and co-writer Steve Stevens. The EP features Idol’s new single, Bitter Taste , that looks back to his near-fatal motorbike crash.
In September 2021 Idol announced a new UK arena tour for summer 2022. The Go-Go’s will no longer be supporting on this tour. The new special guest will be Television.

Billy Idol Announces The Roadside Tour 2022 (Glasgow June 22) with Very Special Guests The Go-Go’s
ANNOUNCES THE ROADSIDE TOUR 2022
With very special guests, the go-go’s.
27 th September 2021 : The world’s favourite rebel Billy Idol is back and heading out on The Roadside Tour 2022 with some new music, a stack of timeless classics and his long-time lead guitarist and collaborator Steve Stevens. For his first appearances in the UK since 2018, Billy will play 6 Arena dates in June 2022 and tickets go on sale at 9am on Thursday 30 th September 2021 from www.aegpresents.co.uk/billy-idol
The global lockdown of 2020 gave Billy time to reflect. While writing the new music that would become his latest release, The Roadside EP , Idol’s thoughts turned to his near-fatal motorcycle accident of 1990, how he dealt with it and how it related to the current crisis. “ It seemed quite logical and natural to write something about my motorcycle accident ,” he says. “ I may have been saying, well, this is what people go through when they are in trouble. I think I was unconsciously making that connection .
“ Certainly, the motorcycle accident was the catharsis, the wake-up moment. Maybe I left behind the irreverent, youthful Billy and opened the door for a more attentive father and more sensitive musician. Something did get left by the roadside, but it was not necessarily a bad thing in the end .”
Billy’s reflections are captured in the lyrics of Bitter Taste , one of four tracks on his new EP The Roadside , his first new music for seven years and as impactful and poignant as ever.
With restrictions lifted, Billy is touring Stateside through the Autumn and looking forward to his return to Britain next year. “ I can’t wait to get back on the road in the UK again ,” Billy adds, “ and enjoy that exhilaration and energy that only comes from playing in front of a live British audience.”
Billy’s touring band features his long-time guitarist and collaborator Steve Stevens along with Stephen McGrath (bass, backing vocals), Billy Morrison (guitar, backing vocals), Paul Trudeau (keyboards, backing vocals) and drummer Erik Eldenius.
Supporting Billy Idol are very special guests The Go-Go’s making their first UK appearance for 26 years. “ We are thrilled to be sharing the stage with Billy Idol on his 2022 Summer UK tour dates. We haven’t had an opportunity to play for our British fans in 26 years and can’t wait to see you all ,” says The Go-Go’s.

About Billy Idol
For forty-five years, Billy Idol has been one of the faces and voices of rock’n’roll, with an artistic resume to match the brilliant light of the image. First as the camera-ready front man for Generation X, between 1977 and 1981 Idol emerged with three albums that made positivity, emotional depth, and high pop synonymous with punk rock. In 1982, Idol embarked on a remarkable transatlantic/trans-genre solo career that integrated clubland throb, wide-screen depth and drama, rockabilly desperation, the bold and simple lines of punk, and rock’n’roll decadence.
Embracing the new MTV music channel, videos for White Wedding , Rebel Yell and Eyes Without A Face established Idol as one of the iconic performers of his generation, a position he still holds today.
About The Go-Go’s
Formed in California in 1978, The Go-Go’s became the first all-female band writing their own material and playing their own instruments to top the U.S. Billboard album chart with their multi-platinum debut, Beauty And The Beat . The album also earned the band a Grammy® Award nomination for Best New Artist and skyrocketed them to superstardom.
The Go-Go’s recently released the single “ CLUB ZERO , ” their first new recording in nearly 20 years, which hit Top 10 on the Rock Digital Song Sales chart. The band’s critically acclaimed documentary, THE-GO-GO’S , captures them working on an early version of the song and is available as a 2-Disc set (DVD + Blu-ray) or download via Polygram/UMe.
With the successful run of their musical Head Over Heels on Broadway in 2018, and their upcoming induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on October 30, Charlotte Caffey, Belinda Carlisle, Gina Schock, Kathy Valentine and Jane Wiedlin (The Go-Go’s) continue to blaze new trails, kicking down the doors for female fronted bands everywhere.

Billy Idol UK Tour October 2022 (with support from Toyah & Killing Joke) – URGENT UPDATE
The roadside tour 2022 with special guests: killing joke and toyah.
Billy Idol is bringing his The Roadside Tour 2022, to the UK from 13th October. Killing Joke are delighted to be announced as special guests for the tour, after Television were forced to make a late withdrawal, alongside Billy’s other tour guest Toyah.
Television are disappointed to announce: “Unfortunately due to illness, we have to cancel the forthcoming UK tour with Billy Idol. We send our deepest apologies to any fans who have bought tickets.“
The ever-popular Toyah will bring an extra sense of fun to the tour. Alongside a flourishing acting career, Toyah carved out a successful musical career with three top ten UK hit singles in the 1980s and the Gold-selling album Anthem. “We’re looking forward to having Killing Joke and Toyah join us in the UK,” said Billy. “This is going to be an epic show!” “I am thrilled to be opening for Billy Idol on The Roadside Tour,” an excited Toyah commented. “Billy is an icon whose music has thrilled millions worldwide and continues to do so.
