The Brazilian Tourism Board Launches An Innovation Laboratory
By The Brasilians NewsPaper
The Brazilian Tourist Board announces the creation of the 1st Embratur Lab unit in Rio de Janeiro, an innovation development center for tourism. It aims to promote the competitiveness and environmental sustainability of services in this sector. The innovation lab was launched in partnership with Turistech Hub Brasil, a center with similar objectives based in São Paulo.
“The city of Rio de Janeiro was chosen to launch this project because it offers a wide variety of tourism-related services, ranging from hosting major urban events to ecotourism in our mountains and forests, from religious tourism to festive tourism. This will be our first large laboratory to test innovations used in tourist destinations throughout Brazil”, underlined the president of Embratur, Marcelo Freixo.
According to Marcelo Freixo, after the laboratory in Rio, new centers will be set up in other cities of the country in partnership with the private sector.
Roberto Gevaerd, Director of Management and Innovation of the Brazilian Tourism Board will be in charge of Embratur Lab: “Our goal is to use technology to improve the experience of international tourists in Brazil. Embratur will invite and will support start-ups to use Rio de Janeiro as a space to experiment with new solutions and technologies. We want to transform Rio into a great technological laboratory for tourism”, he said.
The new center aims, among other things, to organize ‘Big Data’ so that companies in the tourism sector can identify trends and consumer behavior and personalize their offers according to public demand. Developing green technology solutions will be a priority to help reduce the carbon footprint of tourism, including the use of renewable energy, the implementation of sustainable practices in hotels, and the promotion of responsible tourism practices.

Copa Airlines and Embratur join to promote Brazilian tourism
In a move that promises to boost Brazil’s visibility on the international tourism stage, Copa Airlines and the Brazilian Tourist Board (Embratur) have entered into a strategic partnership.
This collaboration, signed during the 50th edition of ABAV Expo in Rio de Janeiro, is poised to bring together the strengths and expertise of both organizations with the goal of promoting Brazil as a must-visit destination for travelers worldwide.
Unveiling a Shared Vision
The partnership, officially sealed with the signatures of Raphael de Lucca, Country Manager of Copa Airlines in Brazil, and Marcelo Freixo, President of Embratur, outlines a comprehensive framework for cooperation.
This entails the implementation of a joint Work Plan, rooted in sustainability, sound financial practices, and technical excellence.
The primary focus of this initiative is innovation, aiming to enhance the supply of international air services and attract more foreign tourists to Brazilian airports.
Joint Initiatives in the Pipeline
The collaboration between Copa Airlines and Embratur encompasses a range of exciting initiatives, each designed to harness their collective capabilities and strengths:
Strategic Marketing and Promotion: Together, the two entities will embark on marketing and promotional campaigns geared towards showcasing the beauty and attractions of Brazil.
The ultimate aim is to increase visibility and entice foreign tourists to explore the country’s diverse offerings.
[monsterinsights_popular_posts_inline]
Market Expansion: One of the pivotal goals is to identify untapped market opportunities and expand Copa Airlines’ presence in key Brazilian tourist destinations.
This expansion will play a pivotal role in enhancing air connectivity and streamlining the flow of foreign tourists.
Loyalty Programs: Collaboratively, they will devise loyalty programs and incentives for foreign tourists who opt for Copa Airlines, further enhancing the attractiveness of Brazil as a travel destination.
Sustainability and Social Responsibility: The partnership will not only focus on tourism but will also prioritize sustainability, social responsibility, and diversity and inclusion efforts, ensuring that tourism benefits local communities and the environment.
For Copa Airlines, this partnership marks a pivotal moment to solidify its position as a key facilitator of connectivity between Brazil and the Americas, which aligns perfectly with its primary objectives.
It also underscores the airline’s strategy of promoting its routes in tandem with the growth and development of the destinations it serves.
Raphael de Lucca, Country Manager for Copa Airlines in Brazil, shared his thoughts on the collaboration, stating:
“We will offer Embratur the opportunity to promote Brazil in the countries operated by Copa, with emphasis on Central America and the Caribbean, in addition to Colombia, the main origins that connect to flights from Brazil.”
“In this way, we will facilitate the entry of millions of foreigners into our country – not only in large cities such as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo but also in other Brazilian destinations where Copa Airlines operates, such as Manaus (AM), Brasilia (DF), Belo Horizonte (MG), and Porto Alegre (RS).”
“We will be able to show foreigners other wonders of our country, such as Natal Luz de Gramado (RS), Pirenópolis (GO), which is just 150km from Brasília and the historic cities of Minas Gerais.”
Embracing Diversity in Brazilian Tourism
Marcelo Freixo, President of the Brazilian Tourist Board , added, “This is a partnership that consolidates our strategy of promoting the diversity of destinations in Brazil, with a focus on our paradisiacal beaches, but also as a protagonist in adventure, Afro-tourism, and sustainability destinations.”
“Copa Airlines, with all its structure and knowledge of connectivity in the Americas, is our ally in showcasing and promoting this myriad of authentic experiences that tourists can find in our country, facilitating connectivity with our main source markets.”

Brazil again extends visa exemptions for U.S., Canada and Australia, this time until 2025

Brazil’s government extended exemptions to tourist visa requirements for citizens of the U.S., Australia and Canada until April 2025, extending a program aimed at boosting tourism that had been scheduled to end Wednesday.
The decision, issued by Brazilian presidency and the Ministry of Foreign Relations late Tuesday, marks the third time Brazil has delayed the visa requirement since President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva took office in 2023.
His predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, exempted the countries from visas as a means to boost tourism — although all three countries continued to demand visas from Brazilians.
That went against the South American country’s tradition of requiring visas from travelers based on the principle of reciprocity and equal treatment, and prompted Lula’s Foreign Ministry to say it would scrap the exemptions.

Brazil dropping its visa requirement for U.S. citizens
U.S. citizens will no longer need a visa to get into Brazil, Brazil Tourism said Wednesday.
March 21, 2019
“Brazil does not grant unilateral exemption from visiting visas, without reciprocity, to other countries,” the ministry said at the time, while noting that the government stood ready to negotiate visa waiver agreements on a reciprocal basis. It did reach a deal with Japan to ease travel provisions.
The decision to maintain exemptions for the three countries is important for boosting tourism in Brazil, notably from the U.S., Brazil’s official tourism board Embratur said in a statement Tuesday.
Official data shows that nearly 670,000 Americans visited Brazil in 2023, making the U.S. the second-largest country of origin after neighboring Argentina.
The government initially postponed the reinstatement of the visa requirement in October, then again in January. At the time, the government said it was still finalizing a new visa system and wanted to avoid implementing it close to the high season, mainly during the New Year’s celebrations and Carnival festivities in February, which attract tens of thousands of tourists.

Brazil to reenergise tourism with new president of Embratur
The new focus is to regain the trust of overseas tourism markets.
Brazil’s president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who assumed his role on 1 January 2023, has appointed Marcelo Freixo to the Brazilian Tourism Board, Embratur.
The immediate priority of Embratur and Freixo is to regain the trust of overseas tourism markets, to show that Brazil is committed to environmental, sustainable, ecotourism and indigenous preservation. The hope is that this will increase inbound travel to the country, bringing renewed investment for tourism infrastructure and bolster the international travel industry by creating employment opportunities.
Freixo said: “After four years of international isolation caused by the irresponsibility of the former government, Brazil will return to the global stage to resume its leading role in promoting dialogue, cooperation, focus on environmental issues and climate change.
“At Embratur, our mission will be to give Brazilian tourism the relevance it deserves, and that the world expects from us.”
He also announced steps to be taken by the tourist board: “We will carry out a technical restructuring of our management and how we are governed with a fresh emphasis on transparency,” he explained.
Embratur will be working closely with the newly appointed government ministers to promote tourism abroad.
“We are going to build a modern, professional and efficient Embratur that is committed to sustainable tourism and development,” Freixo concluded.
Brazil has been identified as a popular destination in 2023, particularly as certain psychedelics are legal there.
Brazil Delays Visa Requirement for American Tourists Until April

Brazil needs more time to get its new visa processing system in order.
Dawit Habtemariam
Brazil has pushed back the implementation of its tourist visa requirement for citizens from Australia, Canada and the U.S., according to Embratur, Brazil’s tourism board.
Brazil had planned to implement the visa requirement on January 10 – the new date is April 10.
“The Brazilian Tourist Board (Embratur) informs that the requirement of entry visas in Brazil for holders of ordinary passports from Australia, Canada and the United States has been postponed to April 10, 2024,” the tourism board said.
The delay will give the Brazilian government more time to roll out its new electronic visa system.
“The extension is intended to complete the process of implementing the requirement system E-Visa and prevent the change from interfering with the flow of tourists from these countries to Brazil during the high season.”
How the Visa System Will Work
Americans, Canadians, and Australians must apply for the document for arrivals scheduled from April 10, 2024 onward. The cost of the visa is $80.90. The visa length is as follows:
- Americans: 10-year period.
- Canadians: 5-year period.
- Australians: 5-year period.
Goodbye Visa-Free Travel
Since 2019, citizens from the U.S., Canada and Australia were allowed to stay in Brazil for up to 90 days with the possibility of extensions of up to 180 days. Before 2019, tourists had to apply for a visa prior to travel.
Tour operators have warned that the visa mandate will damage Brazil’s competitiveness as a tourist destination.

Airbnb and embratur launch partnership to boost brazil's tourism.
Agreement includes data sharing and promotion of Brazil as an international tourism destination, with emphasis on cultural richness and Afrotourism
Airbnb and Embratur, the Brazilian Tourism Board, announced a partnership to collaborate in areas of common interest and boost international tourism in Brazil. The memorandum establishes guidelines for cooperation in marketing intelligence, tourism promotion and initiatives focused on Afrotourism, reinforcing the platform’s and the agency’s commitment to promoting responsible, sustainable and beneficial tourism for all parties involved.
“The partnership with Embratur reflects Airbnb’s commitment to contributing to the development of tourism in Brazil. Airbnb is proud to promote authentic travel and is happy to collaborate with the promotion of Afrotourism in the country and projects aimed at the economic empowerment of local communities,” said Aleksandra Ristovic, institutional and government relations manager at Airbnb in Brazil.
Airbnb believes that good policies should create opportunities for both property owners to earn extra income and for local communities which benefit from the positive impact that the influx of guests generates on the local economy in different sectors such as food, transport and trade.
Among the planned cooperations is the creation, together with professionals and organisations that work with Afrotourism, of a route to promote the segment in the city of Rio de Janeiro as part of the #RotasAirbnb programme, an initiative by the platform that promotes authentic and sustainable travel throughout Brazil by highlighting destinations that value local culture and contribute to communities’ economies.
“This is a significant step towards strengthening Brazil’s presence on the international tourism scene. We want to combine Airbnb’s market intelligence with the knowledge of those who already practise Afrotourism in Rio de Janeiro to support innovative strategic decisions with the aim of attracting tourists and strengthening Afroentrepreneurship, generating jobs and income,” reinforced Marcelo Freixo, president of Embratur.

Brazil’s tourism board doesn’t cater to foreigners
A new program announced by the Brazilian Tourism Board (Embratur) has sparked criticism that the country’s tourism promotion platform is being directed at Brazilians, and not foreign tourists.
Embratur is developing a reality show project—entitled “ O Rei do Rolê “—in which foreign social media users will compete to win the chance to travel around Brazil for 30 days, meeting President Jair Bolsonaro in the process.
The tourism board has let slip few details about O Rei do Rolê (translated loosely as “The King of the Party”), but the fact that the title of the show will not even have an English or Spanish translation highlights the insularity of Embratur’s agenda.
Those interested in taking part will be required to submit 1-minute videos explaining why they should be chosen, and Embratur has suggested it will consider the number of social media followers of contestants when selecting a winner.
This comes weeks after the Federal Police released data showing the number of tourists visiting Brazil fell 5.4...
