The Perfect Buck Island Day Trip from St. Croix

Big Beard's catamaran pulled up to Turtle Beach on Buck Island

Are you looking to have an extraordinary adventure during your next St. Croix trip? Then a day trip to Buck Island deserves a spot on your vacation itinerary. Those who are into snorkeling should especially not miss this top-rated St. Croix experience.

I should first point out that I’m a bit of a reluctant snorkeler. I’m not very good at it and it’s normally not at the top of my vacation to-do list. That said, when the property manager of our vacation rental told me the snorkeling around Buck Island looks just like “Finding Nemo”, I was curious.

To be honest, I didn’t completely believe the woman and thought she was just being a good island salesperson. That said, Aaron and I still signed up for a half-day tour with Big Beard’s because above all, we like getting out on the water. If the snorkeling was good too, that would be a bonus.

After all that I have to say, even if you aren’t the biggest snorkeler, trust me – this one is worth it. Plus, you’ll be under the guidance and expertise of a reputable tour company, so all you basically have to do is show up! With that, let’s get into all that you need to know about this fun day on the water.

The Perfect Day Trip to Buck Island

Here is a bit of background on Buck Island, including what to expect from a day trip and other tips for having the best possible experience. Soon you’ll see why a Buck Island tour is one of the best things to do on St. Croix .

Why Buck Island

Mound of Buck Island rising in the distance viewed from catamaran tour boat

As it turns out, taking a boat tour to Buck Island gives you access to an underwater world you’d otherwise never know.  This tiny island sits just a half mile off St. Croix and boasts pristine beaches, diverse sea life, and ancient coral reef formations.

Some of the oldest corals date back a mind-boggling 10,000 years and rise as much as 40 feet from the ocean floor.  Lots of different sea creatures find refuge in the elkhorn corals that surround two-thirds of Buck Island for over 30 square miles.

President Kennedy himself called Buck Island “one of the finest marine gardens in the Caribbean Sea” when he designated the reef as a National Monument in 1961.  President Clinton further protected the island and surrounding waters to a depth of 5,000 when he designated it “Marine Protected Area” since 2001.

If that doesn’t tell you that Buck Island is a must-see place, then I don’t know what does.

Buck Island Tour: What to Expect

View of St Croix from Buck Island with catamaran tour boat docked near the beach

Aaron and I met our tour group at 9am in Christiansted to board the large catamaran that would transport thirty-six of us.  While there was no entrance fee for Buck Island itself, we did pay $85 each for the tour. I chose to sit on the very front of the boat for the ride over, which was a lot of fun, but left me soaked from all the spray.

While the half-day trip way plenty of time to leave me with a lasting impression, if I returned, I’d choose the full day. I’d love additional time to hike the island and enjoy a picnic lunch on the beach.

Stop #1: Turtle Beach

We got off the boat onto one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve ever laid eyes upon: Turtle Beach.  Sadly, we were only there for 45 minutes, and I felt like I could have stayed at that beautiful spot all day.

There was actually some decent snorkeling in this beach’s calm, pristine waters.  The water couldn’t have been more clear: I was able to see a sand dollar, lots of different fish, a large shell, and even a mussel.  This was the perfect spot for people like me, who desire to practice snorkeling before heading out to rougher waters.

Stop #2: Snorkel Time

Next, we then boated over to the other side of the island for the real deal.  Through choppier waters, the guides first led us to where the snorkel trail began.  Then, we were basically left to guide ourselves.

The snorkeling here was outstanding and far exceeded my expectations.  There were HUGE corals beneath the surface, although I’m not sure if they were the 10,000-year-olds.  I saw big round brain coral and elkhorn coral with branches fanning out from them.  Some coral was so high, the top was only a couple feet below the surface of the water and it was tricky to swim around/over them.

There were also fish galore that were big and small, sometimes rainbow, and many that were blue and black.  With all the scenery being so beautiful, I wasn’t even fazed by the choppy water or seaweed that sometimes encroached.  There was, however, a little bit of a current that sometimes made navigating the snorkel trail a little tricky.

This ended up being the best snorkeling I’ve ever done since my first fun experience at Norman Island in the BVI .

Travel Savvy Tip

If you have at all been considering buying a GoPro, this is the time to get one. You’ll definitely want to capture all the amazing coral formations at Buck Island Reef National Monument. You can purchase your GoPro here !

If you have a GoPro already, make sure you pack it! I sadly did not bring my GoPro with me on this trip and later regretted it. In fact, forgetting things like this is what inspired me to finally create this thorough Caribbean Packing List .

What to Bring

People standing on shore of Turtle Beach

While there isn’t much you’ll need during a day trip to Buck Island, there are a few essentials that you’ll want on hand:

  • A swimsuit. It’s best to just wear it since there’s not really a good spot to change.
  • Reef safe sunscreen (we like this one ). Note that other regular types of sunscreen have been outlawed.
  • A hat to protect from the sun (just be careful while on the boat, so it doesn’t blow away)
  • A rash guard
  • GoPro – these user friendly gadgets are simple and amazing for underwater photography.
  • Cell phone for photos
  • A water bottle in case you get thirsty
  • Optional: waterproof bag for belongings like this one .

Leave No Trace

Pristine white sand beach with gentlest aqua waters

While you are enjoying the beauty of Buck Island, keep in mind that it continues to be a protected sanctuary for endangered species. This includes several species of sea turtles, ground lizards, brown pelicans, and least terns.

Be sure to leave no trace and don’t take anything with you from the beach, including rocks or shells. Other than that, enjoy a fabulous day soaking up the sun and seeing incredible marine life.

To learn even more about what makes Buck Island special before your visit, consider watching this award winning documentary, “Caribbean Gem” .

A visit to Buck Island will make any St. Croix trip all the more memorable. All levels of snorkelers can enjoy this trip, and you’ll be hard pressed to find such amazing coral reef systems anywhere else in the Caribbean. Plus, there’s no denying that Turtle Beach is one of the most pristine white sand beaches in the USVI, and a boat trip is the only way to see it!

Are you ready to see some of the best snorkeling in the US Virgin Islands? Here's how to make the most of a Buck Island day trip during any St. Croix vacation. From pristine scenery to epic sea life, you'll be in awe. Buck island brings gorgeous white sand beaches, endangered and protected species, and ancient corals.

  • Best Buck Island Tours: A Day with Llewellyn’s Charter

by Nichole | Last updated Apr 19, 2024 | Best Snorkeling Caribbean , St. Croix

If you Google top things to do in St. Croix , Buck Island will always be on everyone’s list and rightfully so. Located about 1.5 miles off the northeastern end of the island of St Croix, this gorgeous island offers plenty of outdoor activities including hiking, snorkeling, and relaxing on the beautiful Turtle Beach. Llewellyn’s Charter operates one of the best Buck Island tours. Here’s what to expect.

* Some of the links in this post contain affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, we may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. All recommendations are from first-hand experience that I feel will deliver value to you! Thank you for your continued support.

How to Get to Buck Island St Croix

5 approved buck island tours.

  • Why We Picked Llewellyn's Charter

#1- LOW NUMBER OF PASSENGERS

#2- excellent reputation, #3- no motors, only sails, how to get to llewellyn's charter, stop #1: underwater snorkeling trail, stop #2: turtle beach, how long is the buck island tour, what to bring, reef safe sunscreen, snorkeling gear, water bottle + snacks, where to stay near buck island, final thoughts, related content.

You can’t swim there, so you must have access to a boat.

It cannot just be any boat, but one that is specifically allowed by the National Park Service to take tourists to Buck Island.

There are 5 approved Buck Island tours, which operate out of Christiansted, Green Cay Marina, or the St Croix Yacht Club.

Where to snorkel at Buck Island St Croix USVI

  • Teroro & Dragonfly : Green Cay Marina (Captain Carl and Heinz)
  • Llewellyn’s Charter : St Croix Yacht Club
  • Jolly Roger : Christiansted Harbor
  • Big Beards Adventure Tour : Christiansted Harbor
  • Caribbean Sea Adventures : Christiansted Harbor or Green Cay Marina (depending on the vessel)

Why We Picked Llewellyn’s Charter

Llewellyn only takes 6 passengers at a time. If you ever been on a snorkeling tour, you know how important it is to pick a company that takes small groups.

The last thing you want is a bunch of people kicking you in the face with their fins as you all try to check out the same marine life at one time.

Llewellyn has been doing this for a while … since 1960 to be exact.

Needless to say, he has many, many, many amazing reviews! Although Llewellyn was not able to personally accompany us on our tour, I was informed by a kind reader he is back in action and sailing with fellow guests once again!

On our tour to Buck Island, we sailed on a 37-foot trimaran sailboat.

Without an engine, we enjoyed breathing in the fresh air without any gas smells as our expert crew operated the sails to safely navigate us over to the island.

Buck Island tours: Llewellyn’s Charter Sailboat at Turtle Beach

PRO TIP :  One thing to be aware of is Llewellyn’s Charter does not offer any food or alcoholic drinks. If you are looking for that experience (with many more people), then book with one of the bigger tour operators. However, if you are looking for a small-group tour that offers a better snorkeling experience, then this is it!

If you follow Google Maps to get to St Croix Yacht Club, it will tell you to turn on Mooring Road.

Do not follow those instructions. Instead, pass the two road signs for Mooring Road and shortly after you will see a sign for St Croix Yacht Club on your left. See the map below.

Type in the code at the gated entrance provided by Llewellyn’s Charter, and you are there!

Directions to St Croix Yacht Club

Outside of St Croix Yacht Club

PRO TIP :  Rent a car! It is so much easier when you have your own set of wheels to get around the island. We rented our vehicle through Centerline and had a great experience.

We snorkel all over the world , so my husband and I purchased our own snorkeling gear for our travels a while back.

I highly advise getting your own properly-fitted gear. This is essential for having the best underwater experience. Having a mask that keeps fogging or fins that want to fall off will ruin your experience.

After putting our gear on and throwing a life jacket over our chest (they are required), we hopped off the boat and entered the clear waters.

We followed our guide along the underwater trail. The Christmas winds were starting to pick up on the day we went, so the snorkeling was difficult due to the choppy water. I was thankful I brought my favorite snorkel fins .

However, we were still able to see some amazing marine life including a barracuda, parrotfish, and blue tangs.

The true highlight of this excursion though was seeing a massive school of Jacks.

Buck Island tours: Close up of School of Jack Fish

Be prepared that most of the coral is dead, but there are some beautiful sections of elkhorn and brain coral.

Buck Island is just one of the many snorkeling locations you can enjoy around St Croix.

If you love snorkeling, check out my article on the Top 5 St Croix Snorkeling Locations .

If you are also heading over to St John, also see my complete guide on the Top St John Snorkeling Sites .

Brain coral

PRO TIP : If snorkeling is the reason you are coming to St Croix, avoid coming during the Christmas winds. I did not realize this was a thing before we arrived.

The wind makes the water choppy and the visibility will not be as good. If it is windy, usually the western side of the island will be calmer for snorkeling (such as Frederiksted Pier or Sand Castle).

After our snorkeling excursion, we sailed over to the stunning Turtle Beach.

This is the quintessential Caribbean beach with soft white sand and beautiful turquoise waters.

You can also hike the main trail on the island that takes you to the top. It takes about 45 minutes roundtrip. We were too tired after snorkeling so opted to just relax. There is no snorkeling around Turtle Beach.

Turtle Beach at Buck Island St Croix USVI

Buck Island St Croix sign

We arrived at St Croix Yacht Club at 9 am and were back around 1 pm, so plan for 4 hours .

Because we were already on the eastern end of the island, we then swung by to check out Point Udall and then had a wonderful lunch at a gas station called Ziggy’s Island Market.

Yes, a gas station, and it was delicious! It is kind of a thing here in St Croix. Don’t miss it.

Ziggy’s Famous Cubano

We rented an INCREDIBLE villa in Cane Bay and loved the location!

A more detailed review can be found in my article Where to Stay in St Croix .

Villa rental at Cane Bay overlooking the ocean

The only downside is the villa is a little far from getting over to Buck Island (40 minutes), but it is close to a lot of great attractions like Annaly Bay , Mt Eagle hike , Frederiksted Pier, etc.

I have detailed all these amazing attractions in my article below.

If you are in St Croix, visiting Buck Island is a must but try to avoid a windy day because snorkeling becomes extremely difficult. Also, be aware of the Christmas winds. We made the best of the situation, but I would love to come back and try snorkeling again on a calm day.

Also, book your excursion with Llewellyn’s Charter and enjoy the small group tour!

Camille

Hello there!

I am contacting You to find out if I can just pay for a ride to Buck Island without the activities and then stay there. I will be in St Thomas for my birthday next month and would like to travel to Buck Island before heading to St croix the same day. Is this possible just to pay for transportation to the island? I won’t need to come back to St Thomas…Thank you!

Nichole

If you want to visit without doing the activities, some of the companies offer private charters. You could contact them directly to see if they would provide transport to visit the island for several hours.

  • Beach Guide

Did you know... St. Croix is ringed by beaches of all shapes and sizes, some are long white sand stretches, others are small patches shaded by low sea grape trees and towering coconut palms. Some have smooth sandy bottoms ideal for swimming, and others have rock and coral-lined entries perfect for snorkeling! Did you know... St. Croix is the only Caribbean Island where a diver can: ●Dive a wall that drops over 13,000 feet ●Dive a reef that is the largest living reef of any Caribbean Island ●Dive five wrecks that are within 100 yards of each other ●Dive a pier

  • Weddings / Romance

DID YOU KNOW THAT... Many couples are opting to save the money (not to mention the stress and hard work) of a big wedding at home by escaping to a Caribbean island for a combination wedding/honeymoon. Upon their return, they can share the event by showing the video and photographs at an informal reception. All the islands are beautiful and, on some, weddings have become a major promotional tool. So why should you choose St. Croix above others?

  • Moving Here

DID YOU KNOW... In addition to it's long and rich multicultural history, friendly people, open spaces, the blue sea and near perfect year-round weather, there are a number of reasons to consider relocating to St Croix. Most importantly, the U.S. Virgin Islands, which includes St Croix, operate under U.S. law which is important in both business and personal matters.

This means mainland US companies do business here including retail stores such as K-Mart, Radio Shack, Office Max, McDonald's and Wendy's. Also U.S. financial services including a variety of U.S. mortgage, insurance and banking companies offer local service.  U.S. cellular phone companies including AT&T and Sprint, both operate here.

Arriving By Cruise Ship

The Ann E. Abramson Pier is named in honor of the Virgin Islands Public Works Commissioner who was responsible for much of the rejuvenation of the Frederiksted area. This is the pier where most of the large cruise ships dock, as well as military ships, submarines, and other naval vessels. From time to time, tall-ships especially from Denmark, can be seen here.

The dock itself has been a favorite diving place especially for viewing bright coral, sponges, and a multitude of fish life. A night dive should reveal the sea-horses unique to this pier. Visitors arriving at the pier often walk through the small town of Frederiksted and walk to the nearby beaches and beach club

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

  • BeverleyT 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat trip - TERRIBLE We got on the bus, but couldn’t buy a 1 day ticket. They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019
  • IrishCueTravel 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles SLO Motion Not all their fault , but if you plan on trying this Attraction be patient! Traffic is a big problem first and foremost. But to add additional unnecessary delays; the bus stops at each site for 15 minutes at a time or More ! I gave up half way through ( 45 minutes) ; and walked back to the starting point in 10 minutes! • michael g 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Worst hop on/hop off EVER Waited for 40 minutes in the cold rain for a bus that never came... unacceptable. Traffic is so bad that when on a bus the previos day it was barely moving. My advice-get a subway pass and a good travel guide book and do sightseeing on your own! Read more Written October 24, 2018
  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018
  • Monismith2014 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles it was very enjoyable it was very interesting seeing things we saw walking around from the bus. so much more to see. we had a lot better view of the attractions from the height of the bus.also the bus was reasonable slow which gave us time enough for photos. it stopped at sparrow hill for 10 minutes for picture taking Read more Written September 20, 2018
  • fati666222 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles The best way to see Moscow We did both routes but if you have little time then only do the red route. Its very informative and it takes you to the important sights. The staff on the bus are very friendly and helpful. Read more Written August 20, 2018

  • Peter F 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Two Routes There is a short red route which depending on the traffic takes about an hour. The route is generally around the Red Square area. The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. The sights we saw were nothing outstanding with plenty of time at certain stops for photos. Also the driver stop for a bite to eat at one stop. Read more Written July 30, 2018
  • Bernardo P 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Boat Trips Moscow, Russia Yesterday, I booked a boat trip with the GetYourGuide.com web page and was totally horrible, didn’t have audio guide as it shows on the picture-Nobody Talk-. The girl on the picture-light blue bag-ask for 100 Rubles for show her the QR Code while I had the Booking and PIN number cause she must see the vessel name-Didn’t say nothing and after she said board any vessel. I suggest take the trip and pay on site, avoid fake internet pages, there are many other services with a lot of entertainment, don’t take this ones. Read more Written July 14, 2018
  • Kathrynowl91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good way to see some sites We usually do these tours when we travel. They get you round and you see the sight . The traffic is quite heavy so it is a bit slow but there is not a lot they can do about it. We only did the red route. Just a note people don’t queue here when the bus comes it’s a bit of a free for all. Read more Written July 13, 2018
  • Daniyal91 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Was Ok.! Started our tour of moscow from here, We had got the 2 Day Pass with the boat ride. The route and the map was good but not well managed. The bus didn't stop at many points. Were were unaware a couple of times at what point we were and missed them. Headphones and maps were provided. Would recommend one should check out the route map before going and decide which places to stop in advance, this way one can manage and enjoy the tour more and us it more effectively.! The boat ride was Ok, a little crowded. No guide provided, just a boat ride with restaurant service Read more Written July 12, 2018
  • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018
