Vienna Public Transport

Modern "ULF"-tram at a station

Vienna has a well-developed public transport network. Buses, trains, trams and underground lines will take you almost anywhere in the city in no time at all. Vienna public transport Wiener Linien operates five underground lines, 29 tram and 127 bus lines, of which 24 are night lines. Night lines only operate between 0.30 am and 5 am. On weekends and public holidays the Vienna underground remains at the service of its passengers all night. The Wiener Linien vehicle fleet currently consists of over 500 tramcars and more than 450 buses. A single ticket costs EUR 2.40 .

Where to buy a ticket

  • ticket machines at most underground stations
  • points of advance sale (German)
  • tobacconists also sell tickets
  • on board the of the tram at an increased rate of EUR 2.60 per ticket
  • Buy tickets online: Wiener Linien Online Shop

Apart from single tickets there are passes for longer periods of time. Passes are available for 24 hours and 72 hours, or as weekly, monthly or annual passes.

  • Ticket Guide

How to validate your ticket

Tickets must be validated before boarding. To validate your ticket stamp the ticket at the blue machines located at the entrance of underground stations as well as on buses and trams. Tickets bought directly on the tram are automatically validated and need not be stamped again.

Where is a ticket valid

Vienna public transport is part of the Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region VOR (transport association for Austria's eastern regions) including parts of Lower Austria, the Burgenland and all of Vienna. The city of Vienna accounts for one full zone or core zone ( Kernzone or " Zone 100 "). A single ticket is valid for travelling one way in one zone. You may change to different lines in the course, but you may not interrupt your journey. Validated tickets can be used for all public transport (bus, tram, underground, train, Badner Bahn and most regional bus lines)

How to Get Around in Austria with Public Transport

Public transport in Austria offers travelers various options for getting around and exploring the country’s cities and towns. Austria has a particularly well developed public transit system making it relatively straightforward to get from A to B on a visit to the country.

This article introduces the different forms of public transport available in Austria’s most visited cities and when exploring the country. It also examines the costs of traveling on trains and busses in Austria and some of the most important things to know before taking a trip on Austrian public transport.

Traveling by Train in Austria

Austria has an extensive train network. Vienna is notably a stop on the world-famous Orient Express and the country boasts a wide variety of rail options for visiting tourists. It is possible to get to almost all the country’s towns and cities via train. Austria’s rail network also connects up with many of the surrounding countries making international rail travel relatively simple.

Most local Austrian’s use trains to travel cross-country and traveling by train can be relatively cheap if tickets are booked in advance (falling as low as around €25 for international tickets). There are also numerous national and international travel passes available to make train travel around Austria and the EU quite cost-effective.

Austria’s International Train Services

Austria borders 8 other countries and the national rail network of the country makes it easy to travel to many of these neighboring states. Austria and all of its neighbors are part of the Schengen free-travel area, meaning visitors won’t need a passport or an Austrian visa to enter the country from an adjacent country by rail.

There are four main services with international train routes to Austria’s neighbors and other European countries beyond:

  • RailJet: To Budapest and Prague
  • ICE International: To Munich and Frankfurt
  • Eurostar: To Brussels and London
  • TGV: To Marsailles and Lyon

Regional Trains in Austria

It is also easy to find many train providers operating nationwide and suburban services across Austria. These vary from fast intercity services to slower local and regional trains.

There are 3 main national train services to choose from:

  • Eurocity: Long-distance fast trains for intercity travel.
  • REX: Regional train service calling at more smaller villages and towns.
  • S Bahn: Suburban train services for big cities like Vienna and Salzburg.

Buses and Trams in Austria

Austrian cities are well connected with both local bus and tram services. These run daily between 5 am to 11 pm in most of the country’s biggest cities. Tickets can be purchased for city transportation at railway and metro stations, on trams and buses and also at most tobacconists (marked “Tabak Trafik”).

Most residents and visitors to the country use the train service to travel to other parts of the country but there are also intercity and international bus services that run between the biggest cities and Austria’s neighboring countries. This is also the best way to reach smaller more inaccessible villages in Austria’s remotest regions.

Taking the Metro in Vienna

Vienna, Austria’s capital city, has its own city-wide metro system. The Metro, or U-Bahn as it’s known locally , compliments the city’s bus and tram network to link up the biggest local attractions and help commuters travel easily around the country’s most visited and populous city. A single ticket costs just €2.40 and it is free to use for children under 5.

Taxis in Austria

Taxis in Austria are relatively inexpensive, costing only approximately €5-8 for a basic 1km journey, depending on the city the service operates in. Be aware, however, that a 10% tip is normally expected by the driver when using a taxi in Austria.

Whilst most Austrians usually hire taxis by phone, app or at taxi ranks, it is also possible to flag down a cab on the street too as is common in the US and other European cities.

What to Remember When Using Austrian Public Transport

  • Trains in Austria are very punctual and often leave at the point of departure precisely on time.
  • Tickets must be bought prior to travel on most forms of public transport in Austria.
  • There are many seats reserved for elderly, pregnant and disabled people on public transport. These are usually marked with a sticker or sign.
  • Smoking is not permitted on Austrian public transport.

Like many European countries, Austria is very easy to navigate in its entirety via public transport. There are many different options available for tourists visiting for a short vacation or a longer stay in the country to navigate and enjoy this beautiful alpine nation.

If you’re entering Austria from outside the EU or Schengen you could require an Austria visa to visit the country. If this applies to you, be sure to check online the type of visa you will need prior to travel, in order to arrive safely and securely to Austria.

Austria is served by an excellent rail network and buses cover most of the places you’ll want to get to beyond the tracks. With a bit of planning, you can explore the wild beauty of Austria by public transport at your own pace, without ever getting behind the wheel of a car.

Add on ferries that make the most of the grand sweep of the Danube River, and excellent roads and cycle routes that cut through spectacular Alpine scenery, and this mountainous corner of central Europe is a joy to explore. Here's how to travel around Austria.

Rail travel within Austria is fast, comfortable, reasonably priced and reliable, and national rail operator ÖBB runs a comprehensive route network across the country. Their Railjet trains are the fastest for intercity routes – clean and quiet, with restaurant cars, free WiFi and power sockets.

You can take bikes on trains , but bike storage spaces are limited on Railjet and InterCity trains so it pays to book a place in advance. Folding bikes are carried for free, but for regular cycles, you need a special ticket that costs 10% of the 2nd-class passenger fare.

The journey from Vienna to Salzburg by Railjet takes as little as 2hrs 22mins, with direct trains twice an hour, city center to city center. From Vienna, it’s just 1hr 15mins to Linz , 2hrs 35mins to Graz , 4hrs to Klagenfurt and 4hrs 15mins to Innsbruck , all direct. R and REX trains are slower and stop at smaller stations between the main hubs.

You can book trains online or at train stations (card and cash payments accepted). The cheapest fares are the advance-purchase Sparschiene tickets, which are valid only for a specified departure time; standard tickets offer more flexibility (you’re not tied to a fixed departure time) but can cost twice as much. Seat reservations are only mandatory on some Intercity or EuroCity services, but it’s worth booking on longer journeys or busy intercity routes (there's a small fee).

Funicular climbing to Schlossberg in Graz, Austria

Leisure Tickets are valid for one day and offer unlimited travel on public transport within a specific state or region, including R and REX trains, suburban trains and buses. However, they’re not valid on Railjet, InterCity or EuroCity services, or for private operators. The Leisure ticket is valid for 2 days in Tyrol .

The private rail operator WESTbahn runs hourly direct services between Salzburg and Vienna, using Vienna’s Westbahnhof station, rather than Vienna Hbf. The modern double-decker trains have free WiFi and the standard (flexible) tickets are cheaper than the equivalent fares with ÖBB. There are also some 26 S-Bahn (suburban) rail lines radiating out from major cities including Vienna, Salzburg and Graz.

Austria’s most scenic rail route is arguably the Unesco-listed Semmeringbahn , between Gloggnitz in Lower Austria and Mürzzuschlag in Styria. Built-in the mid 19th century it crosses the Semmering Pass by way of a spectacular succession of tunnels and viaducts.

In mountainous areas, don't overlook cable cars and funicular railways as a means of getting around. The Schafbergbahn railway at St Wolfgang – the country's steepest rack and pinion railway – and the Hintertuxer Gletscher cable car at Mayrhofen are both highly memorable journeys.

People in a Christmas market in Austria

If you can’t get somewhere in Austria by train, the chances are you’ll be able to get there by bus, often with a connecting service from the railway station. Most services are run by Postbus (a subsidiary of ÖBB), along with a few regional operators including Salzburg Verkehr in Salzburgerland, ÖOVV in Upper Austria, VOR in Lower Austria, Vienna and Burgenland, Verbund Linien in Styria and Kärntner Linien in Carinthia.

For most journeys, you can just buy a ticket when boarding the bus, but buying a ticket in advance can be a good idea on some major routes in peak season (such as the fast double-decker Intercitybus service between Graz and Klagenfurt, or the bus from Salzburg to Bad Ischl). Sundays tend to see significantly fewer services in rural areas, which you might need to plan around for some journeys.

The road network in Austria is very good and the roadside scenery can be epic. Motorways operate on a toll system, and vehicles are required to display a toll sticker known as a vignette . Vignettes can be bought to cover 10 days (€9.50), two months (€27.80) or one year (€92.50).   If you’re driving in Austria, you need to drive on the right (and overtake on the left). Seatbelts are compulsory and speed restrictions are 130km/h on motorways, 100km/h on open roads and 30km/h to 50km/h in built-up areas.

You’re legally required to have a reflective jacket in the car (to be worn in case of a breakdown), as well as a warning triangle and a first aid kit. Appropriately sized child restraints are required for children under 14 and under 1.35m (4.4ft) tall.

Young mountain biker riding at Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria

There are Citybike rental schemes in Vienna and Salzburg , and bike rental services are widespread across Austria. Mountain bikes, road bikes and e-bikes are all easy to find, and you can take bikes on trains to avoid long road journeys. On the Danube Cycle Path , there’s the useful option to rent a bike in Passau (just over the border in Germany) and drop it off around 185 miles (300km) later in Vienna.

Austrian Airlines operates domestic flights from Vienna to/from Innsbruck (1 hour) and Klagenfurt (40 minutes). However, for a country this size – boasting an excellent rail network, and crammed with some of the most exquisitely beautiful mountain scenery anywhere in Europe – it’s much more rewarding (and environmentally friendly) to take the train.

Passenger ferries and boat tours operate along the Danube – the Donau website has timetables. There are also boat services on several of the larger lakes in Austria’s Salzkammergut region, including Wolfgangsee and Hallstätter See.

Accessible transportation in Austria

Railjet services have wheelchair spaces and wheelchair-accessible toilets (the coaches where these are provided are marked on timetables). Lifts are provided to reach platform level at major stations such as Salzburg Hbf and some trains have wheelchair ramps for boarding. ÖBB has an online form for enquiries regarding station and onboard accessibility for specific journeys. See Lonely Planet's Accessible Travel Resources page for more information.

Public traffic

Salzburg’s area-wide network of bus lines caters to your every need. The electric trolleys and regular buses carry locals and guests alike to their destination, always stress-free and eco-friendly.

Salzburg boasts an eco-friendly public transportation system that includes electrically powered trolleys as well as buses. Take full advantage of public transport and do your part to protect the climate. Our trolley buses run every 10, 15 or 20 minutes during the day, while most regular buses come every 15 minutes. A special timetable is in effect during the summer holidays between July and August. You can also get home comfortably and safely at night with the NachtStern and Bustaxi . Current bus schedules can be found online at fahrplan.salzburg-verkehr.at .

Single tickets for Salzburg public transportation as well as 24-hour tickets for the central zone are cheaper if you buy them in advance at one of the numerous kiosks (“Trafiken”) throughout Salzburg or from a ticket machine. If you appreciate personal information in addition to the ticket purchase, you can get detailed advice at the ServiceCenter Verkehr at the Lokalbahnhof (basement), the ServiceCenter Alpenstraße or at the customer center of the Salzburger Verkehrsverbund in Schallmoser Hauptstraße. The 24-hour ticket is especially affordable, providing you with a runaround ticket for the entire city. If you plan on staying longer than 4 days in the city, purchasing a weekly pass is definitely worthwhile. All advance tickets must be validated on the first journey in the vehicle.

With the SalzburgMobil app for iPhone, Android and Windows you will always find the best way. The SalzburgMobil app clearly displays all possible connections from your starting point to your destination. In addition, you can use it to buy tickets in advance. You can find more information about the app on the Salzburg AG website . Alternatively, the Salzburg Transport Association (SVV) offers the Salzburg Transport app. You can find more information on the website of the Salzburg Transport Association .

Rides on public buses are included with the Salzburg Card (trolley buses 1-14; regular buses operated by Albus: 20-28, 34, 35, 151; trains operated by Salzburger Lokalbahn as far as the Acharting halt). Children ages 6 -14 ride Salzburg public transportation at the minimum fare.
