  • 1 Novembre 2021

STEVEN WILSON GAVIN HARRISON RICHARD BARBIERI

steven wilson tour 2022 italia

Porcupine Tree (left to right) Gavin Harrison, Steven Wilson and Richard Barbieri

Reunited prog-rockers Porcupine Tree on surviving their rift: ‘You can’t help but feel bitter’

The cult prog band fizzled out in 2010 when leader Steven Wilson lost interest – but never thought to tell his bandmates. What’s brought the trio back together? And is this closure or a fresh start?

I n Air Studios in London early this year, I watch three men play music together for the first time since October 2010. When they walked off the stage at the Royal Albert Hall nearly 12 years ago, two of the three members had assumed that the band remained a going concern. But Steven Wilson, their frontman and guitarist, had decided that was it for the group, at least for the time being. Only he hadn’t told his bandmates. Or their management. Or their label. Or anyone.

Wilson had begun Porcupine Tree in 1987 as a lark – a pastiche of old English psychedelic rock, along the lines of XTC’s Dukes of Stratosphear . But he felt hemmed in. What had started as a side project had become the thing people knew him for – and expected him to deliver more of. “I’d started to think: ‘This is not what I’m supposed to do,’” Wilson says over a video call, a few days after that in-person get-together. “Certainly, this wasn’t supposed to be the all-encompassing dominant strand of my professional life. I wanted to go off and work with other musicians; I wanted to do other styles of music.”

He says he felt resented by the drummer, Gavin Harrison, and the keyboard player, Richard Barbieri, for being the one who got all the attention; he felt his musicianship was being judged. “I didn’t feel particularly liked or respected in the band – or at least if they did have respect, it was never vocalised.”

So Wilson didn’t bother saying anything to them. He just left, leaving Porcupine Tree as a perpetual loose end. For a couple of years, the other two waited for Wilson to return. But then they read interviews in which he would talk about his solo career and deny any interest in their band.

Porcupine Tree at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in October 2010

“You can’t help but feel bitter and hurt,” says Barbieri, who found himself in the same situation as when David Sylvian walked away from Japan at the end of 1982. “You get to a point of critical and commercial success and, at that very point, it’s just dragged away. And, of course, it’s not easy for the members to just carry on. It requires a lot of time before you step back into a career. But for the person at the front, they carry on with the same manager, the same record label, the same fanbase, the same publisher, the same promoter, the same agent. So it’s very painless for them. But it leaves people behind who spent as much time working as they did, so it’s tough.”

Harrison lived near Wilson and from 2012 they jammed every so often, so he was less fussed by the interviews. “I’d think: ‘Well, I had a cup of tea with him last week and he didn’t say anything like that to me.’ But I think, from Steven’s point of view, it was somewhat of an internal competition between a band he started and himself, between the two different things going on in his mind, and I think he wanted the audience to at least not focus on when Porcupine Tree was coming back and focus on his solo career.”

Wilson’s continual refusal to address Porcupine Tree’s future meant that the band’s legend grew in their absence. They became the prog rock band that got away (not something that would necessarily have pleased Wilson, who hates the term).

After such a long time apart, one might expect a certain sloppiness, but to the lay listener there is none of that. On the other side of the glass, the trio appear to be in perfect sync as they run through Harridan, the opening track of their new album, Closure/Continuation. The bass and drums wrap around each other like vines, intricate and entwined, and keyboards break like waves over them. It is complex, thorny but melodic music. And then the three players stop, exchange words quietly and start again. For the couple of hours I watch, that is what they do: run through one song, over and over again.

Closure/Continuation has been in the making since the days when Porcupine Tree appeared to be over. The jams Wilson and Harrison had undertaken over the past decade were revisited during lockdown. Tapes that Barbieri had sent to Wilson in later years had been worked up into songs. The three men did all the recording in their own homes – hence them not having played together since 2010 – and ended up making their new album without anyone knowing.

The title reflects their uncertainty over the band’s future. “We didn’t have to make this record,” Wilson says. “It’s not as if we’ve come back because we’ve been offered $10m to tour America. We’ve not come back because our solo careers have failed. We thought it’d be fun and we had some good material. I think that’s partly reflected in the title of the album: I genuinely don’t know whether this is closure or the start of another continuing strand of the band’s career.

“If it is closure, I think it’s a really nice way to do it. Or we might call each other up a year from now and say: ‘Hey, that was fun. Should we do it again?’ My guess is probably the former. I think it probably is the last record we’ll make and probably the last tour we’ll do.”

Barbieri says: “I know Steven will go into solo mode once this is over. And it depends where that takes him. Porcupine Tree can only really come from Steven wanting to be part of it. I’m quite happy if it is closure. I’m quite comfortable with that. Because we’ve made a good album. And I think we’re going to end on a good vibe between the three of us. There’s not going to be any kind of negative feelings.”

That said, being in a group isn’t easy. Wilson talks about the Venn diagram in any band – where what music they can actually play is limited to the intersection of their tastes – and how it circumscribes ambition. By the end of the first time round, he says, “we ended up having this archetype of a Porcupine Tree song: little bit of a metal riff, emotional vocals, chorus, then a clever bit in the middle, then some tricky time signature stuff for the musos. By the time we got to that last album, that last tour, it just wasn’t interesting enough for me any more.”

It frustrated the others, too. Harrison loves soul, funk and jazz, but there was no room for that. Barbieri, too, noticed that his preferred “very minimalist and slowly evolving atmospheric approach” is not of huge interest to the other two. At least, they all agree, Closure/Continuation is made up largely of true co-writes, rather than being driven by Wilson with lesser contributions from the other two.

Then there is the amount of effort involved. Barbieri, 64, frets about his concentration span. For Harrison, 58, the physicality of his drumming is a more pressing issue. “How much longer can I really carry on playing this kind of music at this kind of level? Other bands I’ve been playing in don’t require such heavy, physical playing. Porcupine Tree was always the hardest-hitting job that I did. In King Crimson [of which he has been a member since 2014], a lot of the members were well over 70, and I don’t picture me playing the drums like this in my 70s.”

In Air Studios, you can see what he means. As the trio work through Harridan, Harrison’s drumming is that mixture of precision and thunder that seems physically impossible; Barbieri – the best soundscaper since Brian Eno, says Wilson – washes the music like a watercolourist; Wilson drives it forward on the bass, before tracking his vocals on his own. “Singers always want to be in a different room when they sing,” Barbieri tells Harrison in the control room. “I had one who had to be in a different country.”

When Porcupine Tree play live in public again, it will be to bigger crowds than ever before; arenas await. And when the tour ends and the three of them leave the stage, who knows if it will be the last time? “Maybe it will be a closure to the whole thing,” Harrison says. “I’m not saying we’re going to break up in 2022. But 2010 was a weird sort of ending – or not-ending. It would be nice to go out with a bang. If that’s what it’s gonna be.”

Steven Wilson Interview 2022: Reunited Porcupine Tree and More

Steven Wilson Interview 2022: Reunited Porcupine Tree and More

Steven John Wilson born on November 3, 1967, is an English musician and singer/songwriter as well as a record producer. He is the founding guitarist, lead vocalist, and songwriter for the band Porcupine Tree, as well as being a part of other bands, such as Blackfield , Storm Corrosion , and No-Man .

Porcupine Tree is a band idea that started out as a duo of Steven Wilson and his school friend Malcolm Stocks. The moment that Steven Wilson signed with Delerium label, he chose the top tracks from the tapes of prog band. All of these songs were master-mastered and formed the basis of Porcupine Tree’s very first studio album, called “ On the Sunday of Life… ” The band was active between 1987–2010 and now they are reunited and coming with new tours and new albums. Steven Wilson shared the news: “I’m happy to report that Porcupine Tree will return to North and South America in September/October 2022 for a limited series of performances in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Chile, see list of dates below – these will likely be the only shows on the Closure/Continuation tour. So my apologies if we aren’t making it to a city near you.

You can also listen to a second track from the forthcoming new album now. ‘Of the New Day’ is a song of rebirth, emerging from darkness. In many ways, it’s a typically atypical Porcupine Tree ballad, but I love how the time signature is constantly changing, from bars of regular 4/4 time to 3/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 11/4. I think it’s something PT can do well, to create a song which has the complexity to it, but in a way that sounds natural and hopefully not simply complicated for the sake of it.”

When does Porcupine Tree reunite again?

Yes, they will get back together and fans are also happy about it. Porcupine Tree is known as a progressive rock band too.

Steven Wilson announced it on the official website and he talked in a new interview: “This is not what I’m supposed to do. Certainly, this wasn’t supposed to be the all-encompassing dominant strand of my professional life. I wanted to go off and work with other musicians; I wanted to do other styles of music. I didn’t feel particularly liked or respected in the band. Or at least if they did have respect, it was never vocalized.”

Steven Wilson also added this to the interview : “We didn’t have to make this record. It’s not as if we’ve come back because we’ve been offered $10m to tour America. We’ve not come back because our solo careers have failed. We thought it’d be fun and we had some good material. I think that’s partly reflected in the title of the album: I genuinely don’t know whether this is a closure or the start of another continuing strand of the band’s career. If it is closure, I think it’s a really nice way to do it. Or we might call each other up a year from now and say: ‘Hey, that was fun. Should we do it again?’ My guess is probably the former. I think it probably is the last record we’ll make and probably the last tour we’ll do.”

Steven Wilson also released his new book titled: “Limited Edition of One”

“Part of the long-awaited memoir of Steven Wilson : whose celebrated band Porcupine Tree began as teenage fiction before unintentionally evolving into a reality that encompassed Grammy-nominated records and sold-out shows around the world before he set out for an even more successful solo career. Part of the story of a twenty-first-century artist who achieved chart-topping mainstream success without ever becoming part of the mainstream. From Abba to Stockhausen, via a collection of conversations and thought pieces on the art of listening, the rules of collaboration, lists of lists, personal stories, professional adventurism (including food, film, TV, modern art), old school rock stardom, how to negotiate an obsessive fanbase and survive on social media, and dream-fever storytelling.”

“Of The New Day” lyrics:

Hold your fear in check my dear It’s got no place here There’s no need to fight Just drift away on the new day

Find yourself a better way To meet the future It’s all that you crave A silhouette of the new day

Walk away from what you love And all your people Move into fog And live again on the new day

Raise your head and fill your lungs Breathe the autumn Shame to be down in the thrall Of the new day

The hour of almost rain The night becomes the day

Daily finds you tearing out All the pages That held all your thoughts When you dreamed of the new day

It’s not the world that shrinks from you It’s the old days That line up behind The monolith of the new day

Closure/Continuation.Live

Closure/Continuation.Live  documents  Porcupine Tree ’s triumphant return to the stage perfectly.

A live recording captured on 7th November 2022 at Amsterdam’s 17,000 capacity Ziggo Dome, it places the listener/viewer right at the heart of the stage for the duration of the show as psychotropic visuals explode behind the band as they play a superlative set of songs that features - to use Steven Wilson’s words - “no hits”, where each one is received like an anthem from an alternate universe.

Steven wilson on porcupine tree's future: “we're leaving our options open”.

steven wilson tour 2022 italia

During a press conference this weekend (Saturday, June 17) at  Hellfest  in Clisson, France,  Steven Wilson was asked about PORCUPINE TREE ‘s future after it plays its currently scheduled shows this spring and summer at a handful of European festivals. He replied: “The simple answer is we don’t know. And it’s kind of reflected in the title of the album [ ‘Closure / Continuation’ ] that we made last year. So this whole idea of closure-slash-continuation. We’re kind of leaving our options open.

“We never  officially  said the band had stopped back in 2010; we just went off and did other things,” he explained. “Personally, I’ve never seen the need for that kind of dramatic gesture: ‘It’s done.’

“So, I think we leave the door open. I personally would love to think we will record again. Whether we  tour  again, I don’t know, ’cause we’re all getting a bit old for that — at least I feel that way anyway.”

Added keyboardist  Richard Barbieri : “That’s right. It would be silly to say that we are never gonna make another album, because you don’t know. We don’t know what’s gonna happen in two years’ time, three years’ time. We  do  have a live album that’s coming out at the end of this year. And that sounds really good. So it’s quite exciting.”

Last year,  PORCUPINE TREE  —  Wilson ,  Barbieri  and drummer  Gavin Harrison  — embarked on a wide-ranging world tour, the band’s first since October 2010. The group was touring in support of its eleventh studio album, the aforementioned  “Closure / Continuation” , which came out in June 2022 via  Music For Nations / Megaforce Records .

In June 2022,  Wilson  told  Under The Radar  that  PORCUPINE TREE ‘s most recent comeback is “not a reunion”. He added: “I mean, firstly, we never broke up. And secondly, we’ve made a new record. For me, a reunion tour is when you get together having broken up and you basically go out and just play your greatest hits, for which is what  THE POLICE  did, for an audience that are basically nostalgic for what you used to be 30, 40 years before. We never broke up and we’ve been making this record for the last 10 years. In fact, pretty much since we were in the slipstream of the finishing of the previous tour. So is that a reunion? I don’t think so. It’s no different to  TOOL  coming back after 15 years with their next record. We’ve been quicker than that. ( Laughs ) We’ve been working on this record for a very long time in — this would be an understatement to say it — a fairly low-profile way, because nobody knew we were making the record at all. Everyone else assumed that the band didn’t exist. I’d be the first to admit I added fuel to that because I would often tell people to forget  PORCUPINE TREE  and it’s not coming back. Because I wanted people to focus on what I was doing at that given moment. But those were white lies because, actually, I knew we were working on this record and I knew eventually it would come out.”

Asked if it’s fair to say the  “Closure / Continuation”  album and tour is “probably a one-off”,  Wilson  said: I suspect it will be the last time we’ll tour. I think it’s quite possible we might make another record. In fact, I was speaking with  Richard  about it. We were in Germany a couple of weeks ago doing promo in Berlin, and somebody asked me that question. I thought, Well, you know what? I think there’s a way forward. A track like  ‘Walk The Plank’  — which is one of the last tracks we did — which doesn’t have any guitars on it at all, and kind of reflects the fact that I’ve moved more and more towards electronic music. I wondered about making a  PORCUPINE TREE  record where we just focused on keyboards, rather than guitars. It would have to be something different to justify doing it. But I suspect we probably wouldn’t tour again. I think in my heart, I think this is probably the last round for sure.”

One of the most forward-thinking, genre-defying rock bands of any era,  PORCUPINE TREE  was founded in 1987 by  Wilson  as an outlet for the experimental recordings he was making outside of his acclaimed post-rock duo  NO-MAN . With the addition of  Barbieri  and  Harrison ,  PORCUPINE TREE  soon evolved into a proper band, releasing 10 studio albums between 1992 and 2009. Each new release saw  PORCUPINE TREE  exploring new musical ideas, their expansive music shifting from pastoral psychedelic rock and ambient electronic soundscapes to experimental pop and propulsive metal. Later releases like 2007’s  Grammy Award -nominated  “Fear Of A Blank Planet”  and 2009’s  “The Incident” — the band’s biggest seller thus far, reaching the top 25 in both the U.S. and the U.K. — saw PORCUPINE TREE  effortlessly melding distinctive genres to create a groundbreaking musical universe all their own.

As relentlessly creative on stage as they are in the studio, PORCUPINE TREE  proved innovative live performers known for sonic innovation and inventive visual productions. In October 2010, the band entered a period of hiatus following a spectacular concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

"It's just two twenty-minute songs. Very conceptual." Steven Wilson updates on his unreleased new studio album

Steven Wilson says his next studio album should be released in early 2025

Steven WIlson

Steven Wilson has updated fans on his next studio album, only months after the release of his Top Four album  The Harmony Codex !

Speaking on the Gas Masks & Hand Grenades podcast, during an interview with himself and Tim Bowness about the new No-Man Housekeeping: The OLI Years, 1990-1994 box set, Wilson revealed that his next studio album will be different again, featuring just two long tracks and follows a conceptual theme.

"The follow up is almost finished, can you believe," Wilson revealed. "Bear in mind The Harmony Codex was finished in December 2022, so it's been over a year since that and I've almost finished the follow-up. It's very different again."

When asked when the new album might be released, Wilson continued, "Beginning of 2025. I work very quickly and I'm still excited by making music. This is just two 20-minute long tracks. So it's a very conceptual, and a I think that'll be finished and ready to come out early next year."

When the host asks if he's not going to tour The Harmony Codex , Wilson replies, "I think I'm going to wait until I've put this next record out and then I'm going to tour."

Wilson released his seventh studio album The Harmony Codex in September. the album reached Number Four in the UK album charts while Prog writers voted their abum of the year, a move followed by the readers in the 2023 Readers' Poll in the current issue, where Wilson was also voted Band/Artist Of The Year as well.
