Are you thinking about visiting Sedona in December? We spent a truly unforgettable week in Sedona just before Christmas in December of 2021 and we’re going to answer 10 important questions you might have before your Winter visit to northern Arizona, including key things to know about weather, costs and crowds.

Is December a good month to visit Sedona, AZ?

December is one of the cheapest and quietest months of the year to visit Sedona, but you will have to compromise with cold mornings and evenings. All things considered, we think Winter is the best season of the year to plan a trip to Sedona and we’re going to show you exactly why.

In this guide, we will show you:

  • 10 key things to know about visiting Sedona in December
  • In depth information about temperatures, prices and tourist numbers
  • Winter impacts on hiking, Jeep trails and photography
  • What you can expect with Christmas lights and decorations in Sedona

Let’s get right into the 10 most important things you should know about visiting Sedona Arizona in December!

1. Is Sedona Busy In December?

Hiker sat on a rocky summit alone overlooking a green and red landscape in coat and hat

Overcrowding is almost always one of the major problems with popular tourist spots and Sedona is one of the very best places to visit in the USA .

Most touristy vacation spots have a peak season, a low season and shoulder seasons in between. However, “low” season doesn’t exist in Sedona, not anymore.

The Winter months of December, January and February attract fewer people to Sedona but we can tell you from experience it isn’t as quiet as you might hope. In fact, Sedona was far busier than nearby Grand Canyon South Rim in Winter , which stunned us.

We shared sunrise hikes in Sedona with more people than anywhere else in the US, and this was on weekdays in mid December. Popular trailheads are always busy, cars are always parked on roadsides and downtown Sedona was a constant hive of activity.

How Many People Visit Sedona?

An estimated 3 million tourists visited Sedona annually before the COVID pandemic. But following international travel restrictions during 2020 that number increased by over 5% to 3.4 million.

According to the Sedona Chamber of Commerce , tourism is a $1 billion industry in Sedona and accounts for over $240 million in wages.

What does that mean for you?

Well, it means that despite the small city in northern Arizona getting busier, you can rest assured you are visiting Sedona when it as quiet as it ever gets during the Winter season.

Here’s how that benefits you:

  • More availability and better prices on hotels.
  • Restaurants won’t always be full or requiring reservations.
  • Jeep and ATV rentals may have discounted daily rates.
  • Hiking trails will be as quiet as they will be all year.
  • Parking lots will be the most accessible of the entire year.
  • You should consider getting off the beaten path when possible.

2. What Is Sedona Weather Like In December?

December brings a mixed bag of weather to Sedona and you need to be prepared for all eventualities. Typically, the mornings, evenings and nights will be cold but the days will be comfortable. So you’ll need to pack plenty of layers, including a heavy Winter coat.

But it’s not all doom and gloom in Winter. It is this variable weather that allows you to create the best Sedona itineraries because the town is quieter when compared to Spring and Fall.

Just 2.2 inches of rainfall across approximately 4.4 days is expected in Sedona during December. If you’re lucky, you might get to see Sedona white over with snow. But snow is rare and almost impossible to plan for, unless you book last minute based on a current weather report.

What is the temperature in Sedona in December?

December is technically classed as the coldest month of the year in Sedona, which puts it at the top of the most chart for most uncomfortable time to visit based on temperature. However, we would argue that those temperatures are mostly overnight and the days are perfect for hiking.

Here are some of the most important weather and climate statistics for Sedona in December:

  • High Temperature – 52 F
  • Low Temperature – 31.9 F
  • Freezing Days – 15.4 days
  • Rainfall – 2.2 inches
  • Rainy Days – 4.4 days
  • Snowfall – 1.1 inches
  • Snowy Days – 0.4 days

You can see how the lows are cold but chances are slim you will be taking on night hikes in Sedona. Daytime temperatures of 52 F on average are surprisingly nice, especially when hiking.

We actually spent most days in shorts and t-shirts, with heavy warm layers for morning and evening.

Sedona is one of the best places to visit in Arizona but it is much quieter in December because of the less desirable Winter weather.

Does it snow in Sedona in December?

Yes it does snow in Sedona in December, but expected snowfall for the month is just 1.1 inches, which is significantly less than January, February, March and even April.

That means December is not the best time to visit Sedona if you want to photograph the red rock landscape covered in a blanket of white snow. You would be better off waiting for the later Winter months and early Spring to see snow falling in Sedona.

Let’s take a look at a monthly breakdown.

Average monthly snowfall in Sedona:

  • December – 1.1 inches
  • January – 2.1 inches
  • February – 2.7 inches
  • March – 2.7 inches
  • April – 1.8 inches

Remember, these numbers are just averages. It doesn’t mean you won’t strike it lucky in December!

3. Are Sedona Hotels Available And Affordable In December?

Hotels in Sedona charge a small fortune for accommodation no matter when you visit, as we found out for ourselves during our visit to northern Arizona in December. It’s just the nature of the tourist beast that is Sedona!

However, we have since looked at prices of hotels in Spring, Summer and Fall, which led to the conclusion that hotel prices in Summer and Winter are cheaper when compared with Spring and Fall. Sometimes by a few hundred dollars, so there are some real savings to be had in Winter.

The other bonus to visiting Sedona in December is hotel room availability being much higher. So even if the price isn’t as low as you might expect, at least you stand a better chance of actually getting a room if you book last minute.

Where To Stay In Sedona

We very highly recommend shopping around and pricing several places up to see what best suits your needs and budget.

Consider the location of hotels within Sedona. Are they close to restaurants? Do you have easy access to the popular hiking trails?

The good news is Sedona is very small and it doesn’t take long to access any of the major tourist sites. Here are a few of the top rated places you can stay in Sedona to get you started:

  • Matterhorn Inn
  • Lantern Light Inn
  • Arabella Hotel
  • Whispering Creek B&B
  • The Suites At Sedona

4. What Are Sedona’s Hiking Trails Like In Winter?

Hiking in Sedona in December with winter coat hat gloves and heavy frost on the ground

Sedona is one of our favorite hiking destinations in the US. The small city is surrounded by diverse and exciting trails leading to stunning vistas, caves and summits. But they are incredibly busy.

Visiting Sedona in December at the beginning of the Winter season means trails are slightly less overcrowded. However, the main issue with hiking in Sedona isn’t overcrowding on the trails themselves, it is getting parked at trailheads.

Fewer people in town means you stand a stronger chance of nailing down a coveted parking space at popular trailheads, including:

  • Devils Bridge Trail
  • Cathedral Rock Trail
  • Bell Rock Trail
  • Boynton Canyon Trail
  • Soldier Pass Trail

Note: You can take a shuttle bus if you visit Sedona between Thursday and Sunday year round.

Trail Conditions

Once you finally get on the trails, you shouldn’t have much to worry about unless there’s a heavy rainfall or rare day of snowfall. Many of the hikes in Sedona are on slick rock and they will become dangerous when wet or icy.

You need to be up early to get parked before the lots fill, but that means starting your day on a cold December morning in Sedona. Plan to hike in layers but start out your morning in the car in a heavy fur coat with a hot coffee.

Shaded parts of certain trails may still have frost from freezing overnight temperatures but by late morning the temperature is much warmer and you’ll likely end up in your lighter layers.

5. Can You Drive Sedona’s Best Jeep Trails In December?

Driving a maroon Jeep up rocks on a dirt path during a sunny warm Winter day in Sedona in December

Sedona is a year round destination with favorable weather conditions for all activities. That means you can rent a Jeep and drive Sedona’s best off road trails no matter the month you visit.

However, a December visit to Sedona AZ combines two of our favorite perks – saving money and crowd free off road trails.

Unlike hiking trails which remain busy all year with little respite, there must be a tiny fractional decrease in the amount of interest in renting Jeeps during the month of December.

Why? We don’t know.

But it saved us $300 and it meant we had 3 days of driving awesome Jeep trails with very few others around. That includes the famous Broken Arrow Trail , Diamondback Gulch and Schnebly Hill Road .

Why Rent A Jeep?

Renting a Jeep will give you independent access to the most remote areas such as Sedona’s ancient ruins and the highest vistas such as Merry Go Round. But the best part is being able to park at both Devils Bridge and Soldier Pass in special off road lots, which guarantees you can hike the trails.

We were very lucky to be in Sedona when the price of a multi-day Jeep rental was discounted at Barlow Adventures . Visit Sedona in mid December and you might be able to pick up the same deal.

6. What Can You Expect With Photography?

Photographer with camera on tripod in a red rock landscape in northern arizona

Sedona isn’t just about hiking and off roading, it is also a spectacular arena for capturing stunning photography. Rugged red rocks, lush green desert vegetation and a big open sky create endless photo opportunities around Sedona.

Soft light and colorful skies around dawn and dusk make sunrise and sunset photography in Sedona unmissable for hobbyist and pro photographers visiting northern Arizona.

December and Winter might just be the very best time of year for photographers to visit Sedona and here’s why:

  • Sunrise is later in the morning so you can avoid the agonizing early alarm
  • Sunset is earlier in the evening so you can shoot your exposures and be back in town for dinner
  • There’s a small chance of snow falling (which is every photographers dream in Sedona!)
  • Chances of a textured and cloudy sky are much higher vs Summer
  • All of the most popular photo spots are quieter than peak season

One of the only downsides to photography in Sedona during December and Winter is having to put up with the cold. Just remember your big fur coat and camera gloves.

7. Are All Of Sedona’s Top Tourist Sites Open?

Where Are Those Morgans drinking wine in Sedona Arizona in December with no crowds

Being a year round travel destination with no real “low” season might sound tiring for the locals, but it is fantastic for Sedona’s economy and it great news for us, the tourists.

There’s not much you can do in Summer that you can’t also do in December or Winter in Sedona. The best USA road trips in Winter are in the southwest where everything stays open year round.

We didn’t have any problems getting into any of the national monuments, ruins, wineries, restaurants or other popular tourist attractions. The best part is you can do all of the top activities and attractions without the heavy crowds you would get in Spring and Fall.

What are the best things to do in Sedona in December?

The best things to do in Sedona during December and Winter are the same as they would be in Spring, Summer or Fall. This year round tourist season we keep mentioning is one of Sedona’s greatest assets.

Here are some of the top activities in Sedona:

  • Hike some of the best trails in the US
  • Rent a Jeep and drive exciting off road trails
  • Visit the best wineries in Sedona on the famous Verde Valley Wine Trail
  • Sunrise and sunset photography of the stunning landscape
  • Ride the Verde Canyon Railroad train
  • Visit ancient ruins and National Monuments
  • Practice yoga at all of the major Sedona Vortexes

All of the major tourist sites will be quiet and relaxing. Plus, you have a better chance of booking tours last minute. In peak season you would have to be very organized by booking way in advance into guided tours at Palatki Heritage Site or the Verde Canyon train ride.

But here’s one fantastic thing you can only do on a December visit to Sedona, Arizona:

  • Walk around the Christmas lights at Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village (see #10)

8. How Is The Sedona Food Scene In Winter?

If there’s one thing you don’t want to see closed in Winter, it is the best restaurants and eateries in town. This happens in some tourist heavy destinations like Zion National Park, but fortunately everything stays open and ready to go in Sedona throughout December and the Winter season.

The local population is big enough and tourism demand stays high enough through the Winter to allow all businesses to remain open even during this supposed “low” season.

Here are some of the best places we ate at in Sedona as well as other top rated spots we will visit next time we’re in town:

  • Elote Cafe – Mexican
  • Outlaw Grille – Hamburger
  • Momos Kitchen – Korean
  • Pisa Lisa – Pizza
  • Gerardo’s Italian Kitchen – Italian
  • Rene at Tlaquepaque – Continental (upscale)
  • Senor Bob’s Hot Dogs – Amazing fast food for lunch
  • Up the Creek Bistro – Quality pub grub (in Page Springs)
  • Red Rock Cafe – Breakfast and brunch (in Village of Oak Creek)

9. What Do You Need To Pack For A Winter Visit?

Hiker watching sunrise over Sedona AZ on a cold but sunny Winter morning in December

Packing for a December visit to Sedona is going to be a tricky one and you’re probably going to overpack. But that’s fine, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

We hiked almost every sunrise and stayed out past sunset most evenings. The key to packing for a December or Winter visit to Sedona is layers. You are going to start out cold, warm up and then it will get cold again.

If you’re a hiker, you are going to need plenty of moisture wicking layers that you can easily put on and take off throughout the day. Even if you don’t plan to hike, you will need heavy coats, sweaters and long pants for mornings and evenings.

Don’t forget sunglasses. Despite it being Winter, the sun will more than likely be out most of time you are in Sedona during the day.

Our top tip is to pack a pair of robust trail runners or hiking shoes. You will need a quality tread to help with access to caves and most hiking trails on slick rock.

10. Are There Any Christmas Lights In Sedona?

What would a December trip be without Christmas lights and decorations?! You can relax and tell the kids that there will be Christmas lights in abundance scattered throughout Sedona in the build up to the big day.

The place you simply can’t miss is Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village, which goes above and beyond all expectations with a wonderful display of Christmas trees, bright lights and elaborate decorations. Make sure you walk around both sides of the shopping center (the main road splits it in two).

If you plan your trip to be in Sedona around December 10th you can head down to Tlaquepaque for the annual Festival of Lights , at which 6,000 luminarias are lit. A word of warning – the line of cars waiting to get into the festival went the entire way through Sedona along highway 89a. Arrive early!

There is usually a 33-38% chance of cloud cover and the Sedona December weather tends to get colder and more cloudy as the month goes on.

This, however, doesn’t tend to affect your chance of enjoying a mild, sunny day outside when you visit Sedona.

Here are the average temperatures from low to high throughout the month of December:

If you were wondering ‘Does it snow in Sedona in December?’ The answer is yes, but heavy snowfall is uncommon.

The snow that Sedona does get in December is very little. The average snowfall is about 1.1 inches for the entire month of December which is very minimal.

Sedona actually has a better chance of snow in the later winter months (January, February & March) so if you’re looking to photograph the desert landscape covered in snow, December isn’t the best month.

Despite this low chance of snowfall, it’s still likely that you can catch a glimpse of the higher-elevation red rock formations snow-capped (especially after a cold night.)

The Sedona temps in December can get up to an average of 57℉ during the daytime which is actually pretty warm especially if you’re doing lots of outside activities.

Despite the average December weather during the day being warm-ish, you’ll still want to come prepared for the cold that comes in the early mornings and late evenings.

What to Wear and Pack

Jess sitting on a stripped picnic blanket lookings at the view of cathedral rock in Sedona as the sunset illuminates the rocks

  • Tops & Bottoms: With December in Sedona AZ being warmer during the days, especially around the afternoon, we make sure that we pack a variety of pants, shorts, short-sleeved shirts, and long sleeves as our bases for all of our outfits. Lots of options are key to being prepared!
  • Layers: We also make sure to have plenty of sweaters, jackets, and outer layers that we can throw on top of our base clothes in case we encounter colder temperatures especially while going out in the evening. You should also consider lightweight layers for the daytime just in case the weather changes up on you!
  • Winter Coat: A heavy winter coat is a must while hiking in Sedona in December. While the temperatures are comfortable during the day, they can still drop to about 36°F in the early morning and evenings. So if you plan on going on any early morning hikes to beat any possible crowds, it’s important to be prepared for brisk winter temperatures.
  • Winter Accessories: Even though the temps are great during the day, we like to pack extra winter accessories just in case.  Always remember to pack gloves, beanies, and scarves in case you choose to do some early morning hikes or late evening dinners.
  • Hiking Shoes: Since the Sedona temperature in December is great for hiking during the day, we recommend bringing hiking shoes or boots to keep your ankles supported while walking. Hiking shoes with good tread are also important if you encounter any potential wet or icy conditions since the trails are often full of slick rocks.
  • Sun Protection: While you might not think about sun protection in the winter, Sedona still has plenty of sunny days where you would want to cover up. We always bring sunscreen and sunglasses with us even on cloudy days to stay on the safe side.

Where to Stay in Sedona

Since we’ve traveled to Sedona during a variety of months, we’ve come to find that hotels are much cheaper in the winter.

This is because Sedona AZ in December experiences significantly fewer crowds since the peak seasons are during the Fall and Spring.

With fewer crowds, the hotels around the area lower their prices and oftentimes they don’t fill up like they would during a busy season. This means it is much easier to find rooms that are available last minute and at a cheap rate.

Another option when it comes to places to stay in Sedona is booking a rental home or studio. Rentals should be equally as easy to find with lots of comparable pricing to hotels.

Here are our top picks of places to stay in the Sedona area:

If you are worried about trail conditions, don’t be! The trails are usually in great condition to hike on in December.

With the average temperature in Sedona in December staying around the high 50s during the daytime, any ice that forms overnight will typically melt off by the time the sun hits the trail in the morning .

The only time you’ll have to worry about the trail conditions is if there has been heavy rain or snowfall in the past couple of days.

Since so many of the trails in the area have slick rock, it can be very dangerous to walk on them if they are wet or icy. But since the Sedona weather of December has such a low chance of precipitation, it shouldn’t be a big concern.

Is Sedona Busy in December?

Jess on a hiking trail in Sedona. She is standing and looking at the view of the towering cliffs in the distance.

Sedona is not considered busy in December, especially compared to the peak Fall and Spring months.

December is actually the start of the slow season which means you will experience very few crowds and cheaper accommodations.

With little to no crowds, we really love to take advantage of that by hiking the most popular trails that you might not get to enjoy as much during the peak season.

Closures in December

Sedona is a popular destination to visit year-round, and because of that most tourist attractions, restaurants, and shops are open year-round as well .

So if you were wondering what to do in Sedona Arizona in December, you won’t have to worry about there being many closures.

The only time you’ll find that anything closes down is on Christmas Day. But even when the state parks close for holidays like Christmas, the trailheads remain open.

Wrap-Up: Sedona in December

Visiting Sedona in the month of December is definitely a best-kept-secret. The weather is mild, there are plenty of activities and festivals to keep you busy, and the hiking trails are way less crowded.

benefits of visiting in december

By midday in the spring and the fall, there is hardly a parking spot to be found at the popular trailheads. Not the case in the winter. Another advantage to visiting Sedona in December is that there are incentives offered by many of the hotels and restaurants. Since winter is considered the slow season, Sedona businesses offer these deals as an effort to stay afloat until the spring. Be sure to check out the best deals on lodging  at the many Sedona hotels, cabins, and bed and breakfasts.

drawbacks of visiting in december

The biggest drawback to visiting Sedona in December is the wintery weather. Since Sedona sits at an elevation of 4,350 feet, temperatures can hover around freezing; and if you’re in the mountains you may encounter snowy trails. If winter isn’t your thing, aim for visiting Sedona another season.

Red Rock Balloon Adventure only runs their tours at sunrise due to weather and conditions, so plan accordingly.

Drive the  Red Rock Scenic Byway:  7.5 miles of stunning scenery featuring red rock formations and plenty of lookout points to take it all in. It only takes about 30 minutes to drive it, but we recommend carving out an afternoon to stop at all the viewpoints.

Go Stargazing:  Bring along some hot cocoa for a winter night you won’t soon forget. Bundle up and enjoy one of the best places in the entire United States to marvel at the night sky. Sedona is one of only twenty certified Dark Sky Communities in the entire world. Sedona has made significant efforts to reduce its light pollution, which is not only good for the environment but fantastic for seeing the nighttime sky. We recommend driving west out of Sedona and out onto Dry Creek Road for the best views.

Take a Jeep Tour:  One of the more popular ways for adventure seekers to see the landscape of Red Rock Country is by taking a guided Jeep tour. There are several local companies that organize private Jeep tours. A guided Jeep tour through Sedona is the chance to take an exhilarating trip through the desert canyons and red rocks. hiking in december

One of the most highly recommended things to do in December in Sedona is to hike. The popular trails will be significantly less crowded and offer a chance for desert solitude and quiet reflection. If you’re looking to book a guided adventure, Wildland Trekking runs guided day hikes  and  backpacking trips in Sedona in December. Keep in mind that temperatures on the trail will be chilly so bring extra layers, water, and plenty of snacks. Below are a few suggestions for day hikes and be sure to check out our top ten list  for even more.

Cathedral Rock Trail:  Cathedral Rock is a natural sandstone butte that is one of the most photographed places in the entire state of Arizona. This hike is one of the most popular in Sedona due to its length of 1.5 miles round trip. A short but sweet ascent  takes you up to the mystical, towering spires. Make sure you have sturdy footwear as it becomes a rock scramble about halfway up the trail.

Bell Rock Loop:  Begin at the base of  Bell Rock  to ascend approximately one mile to the top via the Bell Rock Loop Trail. This short hike is another extremely popular one so keep in mind the day of time and season you’re visiting. Bell Rock offers some of the most stunning panoramic views of Sedona. This is a must-do hike.

West Fork of Oak Creek: This 6.5-mile out-and-back trail with an elevation gain of 567 feet makes for a nice stroll through the canyon floor . Beware there are a few stream crossings so wear appropriate footwear. This hike is a wonderful option 365 days a year— in the fall, maple trees turn a bright red; in the winter, icicles dangle from the red rocks.

Devil’s Bridge:  Devil’s Bridge is the largest natural sandstone arch in Sedona. This is a popular hike because hikers have the option to walk out onto the top of the arch (you’ll likely have to wait your turn, however). As mentioned earlier, this hike can be challenging to access. The Coconino National Forest lists two recommended routes to get to the Devil’s Bridge Trailhead if you don’t have reliable transportation. The first is Mescal to Chuckwagon to Devil’s Bridge trail (4 miles round-trip) from Long Canyon Road, or the Chuckwagon Trail to the Devil’s Bridge Trail from Dry Creek Road (5.8 miles round-trip).

can you visit sedona in december

There is no bad time of year to head to the charming city in northern Arizona known for its red rocks and New Age vibes, but planning a visit to Sedona in winter can be an excellent way to beat the crowds and see a different perspective of this popular tourist spot.

Though many associate the state of Arizona with heat and arid desert temperatures, Sedona is a place that very much experiences four seasons and, therefore, there are a few considerations that need to be taken into account before planning a winter trip to Sedona.

Arizona is one of the best winter destinations in the United States, so long as you’re prepared that a good portion of the state indeed experiences proper winter temperatures (and yes, even snow!).

If you’re planning an Arizona itinerary and want to come during the winter season, then make sure to read this guide to get all of the information you need before you go.

Table of Contents

Sedona Winter Weather

The first thing that you need to know before you head to Sedona in the winter season is what the weather will be like. You will be forgiven for assuming that, because you will be in Arizona, the weather will be perfectly warm and sunny during the months of December through February. Unfortunately, this isn’t always the case.

Sedona covered in snow

Sedona can get cold — it’s located in Northern Arizona in the high desert, after all. However, it’s worth noting that the difference between the high and low temperatures can be pretty significant. Expect the mornings and evenings to be freezing (actually). You’re going to experience ice on hiking trails and a bit of frost, as well. Therefore, you need to make sure to bring a warm jacket, hat and gloves with you.

However, at the peak of the day, temperatures can actually be incredibly pleasant. While it’s not necessarily “shorts and t-shirt” weather, a light sweater is probably all you may need to keep warm, especially if you’re keeping active.

Keep in mind that the warmest temperatures will only last for a couple of hours, at most, so even if the high temperature looks pleasant, the hourly may still be on the colder side.

On average, expect the highs in Sedona in winter to average around 60 ° F (16 ° C) and the lows to average at about 32 ° F (0 ° C). Of course, there is some variation here so make sure to keep an eye on the weather forecasts before you go and plan accordingly.

Does it Snow in Sedona?

The temperatures can certainly get low enough for a dusting of snow here and there, but don’t expect heavy snow during winter. On average, Sedona receives about 3.5 inches (about 9 centimetres) of snow each year.

However, depending on the weather forecast, you may encounter a bit of snow in the winter months and, especially if you’re wandering around in the morning, you will very likely encounter a fair bit of ice, as well.

One thing to keep in mind is that snow in Sedona rarely sticks for long and doesn’t tend to pile up, so there aren’t a lot of considerations that need to be made in that regard. If you want to experience a more snowy climate in Arizona, make sure to head up to Flagstaff, where you will certainly experience a lot of snow.

There is no denying, however, that the red rocks of Sedona look particularly scenic under a dusting of snow.

Icy Trails in Sedona

Driving in Sedona During the Winter

As we’ve discussed in the section above, Sedona doesn’t experience very heavy snowfall during the months of December-February and you only really have to account for an average of 3-4 days of precipitation each month, so conditions aren’t very bad. Therefore, when it comes to winter driving in Sedona, there isn’t much weather-wise that you need to take into account.

The main roads are generally well-maintained and you aren’t going to require any special tires when driving in Sedona during winter. One thing to consider is that the mornings can get icy, so just drive with a bit of vigilance and awareness before the day begins to warm up.

If you’ve first spent some time in Phoenix during the winter months , you will definitely notice a difference in climate when on the Phoenix to Sedona drive , however, the road conditions are quite good and there’s nothing out of the ordinary that you need to be aware of when driving north.

Other than that, there are no real considerations that you need to make when driving in winter vs any other season.

If you need to rent a car for your trip to Sedona, you can browse Rentalcars.com which aggregates deals across many major companies.

Which Month to Visit Sedona?

So now that we’ve covered a number of the things you need to know before heading out on a Sedona trip in the winter season, let’s discuss which month would be best to visit if you happen to be travelling in the colder time of the year.

Winter temperatures in Sedona tend to span from December through February and things begin to warm up and get incredibly pleasant again come March.

As mentioned in the winter weather in Sedona section, the difference between the high temperature and the low temperature in the winter can be quite drastic and, though the high may look warm, it’s worth noting that the peak temperature only lasts for an hour or two.

One of the most popular months for visiting Sedona in the winter is December, and understandably so. The holiday season means that the city itself is decked out in lovely decorations and it is also a time of year when many people take some time off for exploring. The average high temperature in Sedona in December is 59°F (15°C) and the average low in December is about 34°F (1°C).

Sedona in January isn’t as popular to visit as in December, but you’re going to get very similar weather conditions. Expect the average highs and lows to be pretty much the same in January with an average precipitation of 4 days.

If you visit Sedona in February, you’re going to find the fewest visitors of all the other winter months and also some warmer average temperatures. Especially toward the end of the month, the highs can start getting warm and incredibly pleasant. The average February high in Sedona is 64°F (18°C) and the average low is 39°F (4°C). Precipitation is about the same as in December and January.

Regardless of this, every month is perfect in Sedona if you’re looking for breathtaking, stunning views and incredible vistas.

Things to do in Sedona in Winter

Now that you’re aware of the weather conditions, let’s discuss the best things to do in Sedona in December, January or February.

In general, because Sedona isn’t particularly snowy or precarious in the winter, you can do almost everything you could if you were spending a day in Sedona (or two or three!) at any other season.

Whether you’re after stargazing or a spa day, hiking or a hot air balloon ride, Sedona has it all – no matter the season!

Obviously, one of the best things to do in Sedona any time of year would be to go hiking. There is no better way to see Sedona than on a trail directly on the red rocks and the season you do this doesn’t matter.

Popular trails like the Devil’s Bridge Trail, Bell Rock Loop, the Cathedral Rock Trail or the Airport Mesa Trail are all fully accessible in the winter and very much worth doing.

One trail that I would not highly recommend doing in the winter is the West Fork Trail. This trail is known to be absolutely beautiful and not all that challenging, however, it requires a number of different creek crossings.

If you head out early, it’s likely the creek will be frozen over and dangerous to walk across and, even if the ice has melted later on, the water will still be absolutely freezing and it’s not worth risking it in the winter.

Icy river crossing on the West Fork Trail

Another great thing to do in Sedona in the winter would be to go on a Jeep tour. These are popular year-round in the town and can take you to some hard-to-reach spots that you may not feel like hiking to.

You could opt to go on an iconic Pink Jeep tour or, alternatively, this jeep tour to Mogollon Rim is an excellent choice. Horseback riding can also be an excellent option if you don’t care for the noise of a Jeep.

An alternative option to see more of the incredible red rock formations is to buy a ticket for the Verde Canyon Railroad and ride a train through the stunning landscapes.

Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village

If you’re visiting in December and want to go holiday shopping or simply want to pick up a few souvenirs from your trip, then make sure to head to Tlaquepaque Village.

Here you will find a range of independent shops where you can pick up something unique. There are also a few cafes and restaurants that you can pop into here to get something to warm you up and take the edge off of a cold day.

Catch the Sunset

One great thing about spending winter in Sedona is that you can catch one of its iconic sunsets without having to stay in the town later than you’d like — this is especially great for those who are visiting Sedona as a day trip or aren’t staying in the town itself.

In December, the sun sets at around 5:30 PM so you can easily end your day trip here before making it back to wherever you’re staying at a decent hour! Those who want to see some incredible night skies will also love this stargazing and UFO tour!

Though you can pretty much do anything in Sedona in the winter that you can in all of the other seasons, the one thing you’re not going to be able to do is go swimming.

Finding some natural swimming spots in Oak Creek or visiting the incredible Slide Rock State Park are some of the best things to do in Sedona, however, the water is far too cold to even consider swimming in and you risk hurting yourself if you do.

  • Packing out what you bring to the hiking trail.
  • Being considerate of other hikers.

  • Not approaching or feeding wildlife.

TAKING PHOTOS

If you plan to do photography, it is best to go in the morning or late afternoon around sunset for stunning views.

The  Tlaquepaque  arts and shopping district has been the central attraction during Christmas in Sedona as the area comes alive with over 6000 luminaries.

These luminaries are icons for holidays in the Southwest, traditional paper-bag lanterns with candles set in sand.

Check out the arts and crafts village with shops where you can taste hot chocolates and Christmas cookies and shop for antiques.

The festivities begin after Thanksgiving, as the village basks in thousands of lights and kicks off the season with a Tree Lighting on Dec. 6.

INDULGE IN WINTER SPORTS

About an hour from the city, Arizona Snowbowl is one of the most popular resorts skiing in Arizona, located atop mountains formed by an eroded volcano millions of years ago.

It is a popular option for a day trip from Flagstaff and Phoenix.

It is one of the best places to visit during Christmas in Sedona to enjoy winter sports with your kids.

has it ever snowed in Phoenix

Nestled in the majestic San Francisco Peaks, Arizona Snowbowl is known for its magnificent views of Humphreys Peak, the highest mountain in Arizona.

The weather at Snowbowl is pleasantly sunny, even during the winter.

But notorious, unexpected snow storms lead to heavy snow quickly piling up.

Because of the cool weather and traces of snow still remaining, spring is also a popular time for skiing at Snowbowl.

The Snowbowl is also home to the only gondola in Arizona.

Also called Telemix, this lift combines eight-passenger gondolas, whipping you up 2,000 feet in just 7 minutes.

From the top, you will be treated to fantastic views of the valley below blanketed in snow.

From here, you can access the bowl area, glades, and all the intermediate runs.

Arizona winter

Note that Weekends and powder days are generally crowded, and long queues for the lifts are standard.

You can also hike along the diamond trails in the Upper Bowl.

With 777 acres of skiable terrain, this is the destination in the state you should visit if you’re serious about skiing in Arizona.

Considered by many to be the premier Arizona ski resort, its location at 11,500 feet makes for an epic ski experience since it boasts the best ski slopes in Arizona.

With five lifts serving 32 runs ranging from easy to complex, the Arizona Snowbowl is one of the most challenging ski areas in the West.

HOW TO GET THERE

The nearest airport is Flagstaff Pulliam Airport about 20 miles away.

If you are flying to Phoenix(Phoenix Sky Harbor Intl. Airport), renting a car is the best option.

It will take around 3 hours on Interstate 17 and you will be treated to stunning views.

But note that the drive-up can be challenging on snowy days if you are driving. The road is filled with bends and steep, and chains are frequently required.

If you are driving from Sedona to Arizona Snowbowl, on Highway 89A up Oak Creek Canyon can be challenging on snowy days.

This journey takes around 1.5 hours(longer if conditions are tricky).

Sedona in December

December 26, 2022

Sedona is one of the most popular destinations in Arizona. That means busy seasons can see slow traffic, full parking lots, and crowded restaurants. Not to mention the high prices for accommodations. So you may be wondering - is December, traditionally an off-season month, a good time to visit Sedona?

Well we’ve got news for you. December is a great month to visit Sedona. One of the best, in fact.

While there’s no true slow season in Sedona, December does see far fewer visitors, which means less competition in parking lots, easier reservations at restaurants (or no reservations required), and deals on accommodations and car rentals. Can’t complain about that! Let’s dive deeper into December in Sedona.

Weather in Sedona in December

can you visit sedona in december

December is the coldest month in Sedona. Of course, cold is a relative term. Sedona’s average high in December is a very comfortable 57 degrees fahrenheit. That means you can still enjoy all the trails and outdoor recreational activities Sedona has to offer. And 57 degrees is a lot more comfortable on the desert trail than July’s average high, which is 97 degrees fahrenheit. And. like much of the rest of the year, December is largely dry and sunny.

The one source of weather-related discomfort is the low temperatures in the evenings, nights, and mornings. The average low in December is 32 degrees fahrenheit. Those chilly temperatures mean you should still bring your winter coat, even if you won’t need it by the afternoon. They also mean you might find a light dusting of snow on the desert’s red rock scenery, which only adds to the allure of the landscape. Not to worry, though. Sedona only sees an average of about one inch of snow in all of December, so it’s unlikely that winter weather will affect roads from a safety perspective.

Things to Do in Sedona in December

can you visit sedona in december

Because the temperatures don’t drop too low and snow is minimal, the list of things to do in Sedona in December is mostly the same as it is the rest of the year. About the only thing December is not ideal for is swimming, unless you can find an indoor pool!

  • Explore Sedona’s 200 trails, totalling over 400 miles criss-crossing the desert. And if you’re lucky, there will be a magical dusting of snow. Here are 14 of our favorites !
  • Rent a 4x4 vehicle and explore the area’s backcountry roads, or take a jeep tour.
  • Enjoy a mountain biking trail through red rock country.
  • Camp in nearby Coconino National Forest.
  • Eat your way through Sedona’s culinary scene, or visit the city’s many shops.
  • Golf at any of Sedona’s clubs.
  • And of course, you can take Shaka Guide’s Sedona driving tour.

Annual Events in Sedona in December

Of course, there are some things you can only do in December in Sedona. Like anywhere else, Sedona hosts its own holiday displays and seasonal activities.

  • The Tlaquepaque Arts and Shopping Village puts on a Festival of Lights, with 6,000 luminarias lighting the mall.
  • Join Santa Claus on the Verde Canyon Railroad’s Magical Christmas Journey in nearby Cottonwood.

What to Pack For a December Trip to Sedona

With comfortable midday temperatures but chilly mornings, evenings, and nights, what do you pack for your December vacation to Sedona? Layers!

You’ll probably start the day wearing your winter coat and whatever long pants you brought. As it warms up, remove layers as your comfort level warrants. You probably want to bring some hoodies or long-sleeved shirts for those transitional hours. By the afternoon, you might even want to keep a pair of shorts handy in your car as the Arizona sun warms the winter sky. And then by evening time, you’ll probably be putting layers back on.

Don’t like the cooler temperatures fool you. The sun is still strong and you’ll want to bring sun protection like a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.

And of course, don’t forget your water - this is the desert after all.

5 Reasons to Visit Sedona in the Winter

Here in Sedona, the locals love to keep winter their biggest secret.

can you visit sedona in december

For some people, 80 degrees and sunny is the perfect weather forecast. But for others—especially those who like to be outside and get the heart rate up while hiking or running—a crisp 60 degrees is ideal. That’s what you get in Sedona during the winter. Most of the local outdoor recreation providers operate year-round here. During the winter in Sedona, you can go on a jeep tour (a very popular activity), where a certified driver will take you on some of the most scenic routes of the desert. You can also take a hot air balloon or a helicopter ride over the canyons, where you’ll get a spectacular bird’s-eye view of the area.

During the winter in Sedona, the daytime temperatures are perfect, and the evenings can get a little chilly. That means after a day of being outdoors, visitors love to retreat , cozy up by the fire and drink hot cocoa. Sedona is home to a variety of accommodation types , from resorts to cabins to bed-and-breakfast inns . Some have outdoor fire pits, where guests are welcome to make after-dinner s’mores and for wine lovers, a glass of local vino is the perfect recipe to end the night by the fire.

3. It’s slow season. Winter in Sedona is technically slow season, which means you’re more likely to find great hotel rates and availability . Without busier crowds, Sedona is more accessible—restaurants aren’t as full and guided tours have convenient vacancies.

If you and your significant other are long overdue for a romantic getaway, visit Sedona in the winter. Travel + Leisure magazine named Sedona one of America’s most romantic winter destinations —ranking on par next to Hawaii, New York City and Charleston. “This spiritual desert oasis looks especially alluring in winter, when the rusty-red mountaintops are dusted white,” reads the T+L story. “With mild days and the crowds thinned out, solitude-seeking couples have Sedona’s spectacular hiking trails practically to themselves. Meandering drives through majestic canyons, sunrise hot-air balloon rides, and spa treatments all heighten the romance factor.” Sedona is a big-time spa destination , with many hotels and spas offering sessions for couples (winter discounts may apply at some). Couples are pampered with wine, soothing massages and aromatherapy. Dining out in Sedona is another popular thing to do during a winter retreat. Some local restaurants have stunning views of the snowy spires and many have seasonal delicacies to please your palate.

9 Reasons to Visit Sedona in Winter

Snow in Sedona Arizona

Sedona in winter is pure magic. The city is quiet, peaceful, and if you’re lucky it’s covered in a blanket of fresh white snow.

Sure, winter in Sedona might come with some rainy days or gray skies, but don’t let that stop you. Like many places, I think a winter visit is best for really getting to know a place.

Since winter is off season in Sedona, you’ll often find yourself alone at even the most popular attractions around town.

So if you’re ready for a beautiful adventure, grab your raincoat and hiking boots and let’s hit the road for Sedona.

Table of Contents

1. No crowds

Sedona in Winter

As I mentioned above, Sedona attractions in winter are often empty or at least with minimal crowds.

While visiting Sedona in January I found myself mostly alone at Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, Chapel of the Holy Cross and Red Rock Crossing.

Those into the outdoors will find hiking in Sedona in January especially peaceful. Even if you do come across other hikers, you’ll have most of the trails to yourself.

If you’re an early riser, be sure not to miss out on witnessing a Sedona sunrise while you’re in town.

You will likely encounter other travelers when visiting Oak Creek Canyon or Red Rock State Park, but not many. Even these normally crowded destinations will be rather quiet this of year.

Trust me, you can do a lot in Sedona in one day without the crowds. Definitely take advantage of this during your trip.

Traveling Soon? Don’t forget your travel insurance.

  • Travel insurance is now more important than ever.
  • Travel insurance is probably less than you think it is. (Ex. For a week in Spain next month I’m paying less than $62.00.)
  • Travel insurance covers a lot more than you think it does.
  • It’s better to have it, than need it and wish you’d bought it.
  • See for yourself. Check prices here .

2. Cooler temperatures

Melvin in Sedona in Winter

You’ll definitely be blessed with cooler weather during your Sedona winter getaway.

Sedona Arizona winter temperatures generally range from the mid 30s to the mid 60s. You’ll have some rainy days and cloud cover during this time as well, but don’t be surprised if you get blue skies on occasion also.

3. Tours are not sold out

Pink Jeep Tours in Sedona

You’ll be happy to know that tours in Sedona during winter don’t usually sell out. Since crowds are small this time of year you’ll have plenty of options for tours, even the always popular Pink Jeep Tours .

Of course, some weekends may be busier than others so I would book ahead if you plan to join a tour, but you should have a good selection and plenty of availability during a winter in Sedona visit.

4. Attractions are open year round

Sedona in Winter

For the most part, Sedona is an outdoor destination and it’s beauty lies in its stunning natural landscape.

That being said, there are always things to do in Sedona in winter. Popular Sedona winter activities include hiking the area’s many trails, mountain biking, photography and stargazing just to name a few.

Just don’t forget all the great restaurants and wineries in the area too.

5. Day trips are easy

Grand Canyon Road Trip

Since crowds are so light in Sedona during winter you’ll encounter virtually no traffic around town. This makes for the perfect opportunity to enjoy a few day trips outside the city.

Some of my favorite day trips are below

  • Sedona to Grand Canyon : This one goes without saying, but you’re only 2 hours south of the Grand Canyon. There is also a train from Sedona to Grand Canyon if you prefer not to drive.
  • Jerome: A former mining town now thought to be haunted. This is a very cool hillside town known for its many artists and musicians. Jermone is about 40 minutes from Sedona.
  • Verde Valley Wine Trail: You’ll find the Verde Valley Wine Trail about 25 minutes outside of Sedona.
  • Horseshoe Bend: This is a popular destination for photographers about 3 hours north of Sedona.

6. Hotel prices are much lower

Hotel in Sedona

Since you made the wise decision to visit Sedona in winter you’ll also be rewarded with very low hotel rates.

In fact, you’ll find most hotels with plenty of availability between December and February along with room rates well below those of spring and fall.

The exception to this rule is that you will see price hikes on and around major holidays. Watch out for Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and Valentine’s Day if you’re looking for a hotel deal.

7. Dinner reservations are easier to get

Soup from Elote Cafe in Sedona

Besides all the great room rates in winter, you’ll also be happy to know that dining reservations are much easier to get between December and February as well. The same exception to holidays is in play here as mentioned above.

In general you should be able to get a table at most restaurants in the city during your visit. I would stil book these before you arrive if possible, but you should have no trouble if making a reasonable effort to plan ahead.

8. You can play in the snow

Winter in Sedona

Another benefit of a Sedona winter visit is the possibility of snowfall during your trip. As you can imagine, the Sedona landscape is absolutely beautiful under fresh snowfall.

I was lucky enough to get to experience this during my winter Sedona visit as well. I can confirm, it’s amazing.

9. Holiday activities

Christmas in Sedona

If you’re looking for a cozy and fun place to spend the holidays, consider a Sedona holiday getaway. The city is super fun during Christmas and New Year’s.

You definitely need to make those accomodation reservations very early though, as hotels will sell out over the holiday season. The same goes for dinner reservations. Make your plans early to secure a table at the city’s most popular restaurants.

I hope you’ve enjoyed learning about my favorite reasons to visit Sedona in Winter. If you’d like to support this blog please consider sharing this post. As always, thanks for reading.

Cathedral Rock Cathedral Rock

Cathedral Rock is known as one of Sedona's four vortexes (the other three include Bell Rock , Airport Mesa and Boynton Canyon ). Some believe that vortexes are places where the earth emits an energy that fosters healing, meditation and self-exploration. Though all of Sedona is considered to be a vortex, there are certain areas, such as Cathedral Rock, where the energy is said to be the strongest. Many past visitors have claimed to feel tingly sensations while hiking here; others have felt nothing.

The 1.2-mile out-and-back trail to Cathedral Rock, which is located about 2 miles west of the Chapel of the Holy Cross , is very popular and busy, according to past visitors. Recent travelers described the hike up as strenuous – in some places difficult, as you have to scramble over some rocks on an incline. But once you get to the top, the views are spectacular. (Just don't expect solitude once you arrive.) Make sure you wear proper hiking boots as the sandstone and loose rocks can get slippery at times. Reviewers say it will take about an hour to get to the top of Cathedral Rock. According to travelers, it's a great place to take photos of the surrounding red rocks – even amateur photographers will not be disappointed.

Although Sedona is surrounded by towering red rock formations, many recent visitors recommend a trip to the official Red Rock State Park specifically to see Cathedral Rock – one of Arizona's most famous landmarks.

This 286-acre nature preserve – located about 10 miles southwest of the "Y" (the intersection of routes 89A and 179) along Oak Creek – boasts great views of Sedona's more famous formations. The park offers a 5-mile trail network that is composed of interconnecting looped trails. The Eagle's Nest Loop leads to the highest point in the park with an elevation gain of about 300 feet. Stop in at the visitor center to learn about the area's history, guided nature walks and moonlit hikes.

Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village free

When you need a break from the trails, swap out those hiking boots for something more fetching and head to the Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village (pronounced T-la-keh-pah-keh). Perched at the intersection of routes 89A and 179, this sizable outdoor shopping center was designed in the style of a traditional Mexican village. The complex was built on a former sycamore grove, and special care was given to maintain the existing trees. As a result, many of the village's structures are built around the sycamores, making way for interesting architecture and forgiving shade. The stucco walls house a variety of art galleries, retail shops selling modern art and glassware, and restaurants, while the cobblestone streets and mosaic fountains provide a charming, old-fashioned atmosphere.

Many travelers highly recommend spending a few hours perusing Tlaquepaque and checking out the local handmade jewelry, food, music and especially the art. Though many felt the wares sold here were too high-priced, reviewers still suggested a visit for the restaurants and architecture. Many of the best tours in Sedona stop here.

Slide Rock State Park Slide Rock State Park

For those of you visiting Sedona during the hot summer months, a few hours at Slide Rock State Park is a must. Housed on land that formerly grew apple trees, the park earned its name from the stretch of its slippery creek bed near the original homestead that now acts as a natural waterslide measuring 80 feet in length. Visitors can cruise down the creek on a tube or on their own, or simply enjoy the sun along the rock bed. Beyond the natural waterslide, the park is home to numerous natural swimming pools. The farm's old homestead is also open to exploration.

Some travelers lament over the at times crowded conditions, but still, many say the park is worth visiting, especially with kids. Visitors often bring their families and spend the entire day at the park soaking up the sun and swimming in the chilly water. Others caution that water shoes with good grip are a must as you'll be slipping and sliding any time you're near the wet, algae-covered rocks (a few reviewers reported getting injured or seeing others sustain injuries from sliding on the rocks, so watch your step). To avoid the crowds and secure a parking spot, heed the advice of reviewers and arrive early.

Also how many days would you recommend for Sedona?

Appreciate your help!

' class=

Occasionally we get a day or two of snow in December but the snow never really lasts very long. It's actually very nice when it snows. It does get a little cold at night but that just adds to the hot tub charm.

Scottsdale is also really nice in the winter (December) with lots of things to do and lots of great restaurants to explore. You can usually figure it will be about 10 degrees or so warmer in the valley than up in Sedona (the higher elevation).

The number of days you spend in Sedona really depends on what you want to see and do. There's a lot to do in the surrounding area if you want to go exploring and spend a week or so. On the other hand, if you just want to see the red rocks, check out a few sights, and do a few hikes, you could get by with 3 or so days.

Scottsdale is a city experience with all that entails.....shopping, restaurants, museums, arts and culture. Sedona is a small town incredibly scenic experience, also with plenty of arts and culture and good restaurants. Sure there are some hiking trails in parks and such in the outlying areas of Scottsdale. But you could spend months hiking all the trails in and around Sedona.

Daytime outdoor activities are a natural.

It's beautiful here in December. As RR said it's cold in the morning. By midday usually you can shed your jacket and get by with a sweater.

It doesn't snow often, and if it does it is usually a light dusting which doesn't last.

My Guide to Visiting Red Rock Country in Sedona, Arizona

Let’s dive into the best things to do in Sedona, shall we?

Five things to know before you visit Sedona, Arizona

Be respectful of native ruins.

Many locations are on or near Native American ruins. Please be respectful and careful when recreating around them. They should not be touched – only looked at.

Take the Sedona Hiking Shuttle

The Sedona Hiking Shuttle is a free, easy, and eco-friendly way to explore some of Sedona’s most popular trails. The shuttle runs Thursdays through Sundays from 8 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. and picks up from two park-and-ride lots: North SR 179 Park and Ride and Posse Grounds Park and Ride.

The shuttle serves five popular trailheads:

  • Cathedral Rock Trailhead
  • Little Horse Trailhead
  • Soldier Pass Trailhead
  • Dry Creek Vista Trailhead
  • Mescal Trailhead

The Sedona Hiking Shuttle is a great way to avoid the hassle of finding parking at busy trailheads and to reduce your carbon footprint. It’s also a great way to meet other hikers and learn more about Sedona’s unique red rock formations.

Sunset over sedona from the top of Wilson Mountain. This is one of the best places to watch the sunset without crowds.

Here are some of the benefits of using the Sedona Hiking Shuttle and why it’s one of the best things to do in Sedona:

  • It’s free!
  • It’s easy to use. Just hop on the shuttle at one of the park and ride lots, and it will take you to your desired trailhead.
  • It’s eco-friendly. The shuttle helps to reduce traffic and emissions in Sedona.
  • It’s a great way to avoid the hassle of finding parking at busy trailheads.
  • It’s a great way to meet other hikers and learn more about Sedona’s unique red rock formations.

So, next time you plan a hike in Sedona, take advantage of the Sedona Hiking Shuttle. It’s the best way to get to the trailhead and enjoy your hike!

Crowded on Weekends

Sedona is hardly a hidden gem (if it was ever), and the place doesn’t have the infrastructure to handle the amount of crowds and cars who visit it. I strongly recommend visiting during the week, and if you are there on the weekend, plan to get there early and avoid the downtown area during the middle of the day and dinner hours.

The lines of cars I have seen waiting to head home from Phoenix can stretch miles. Save yourself the stress by coming home late and enjoying a sunset hike from one of the many beautiful places in the area.

Views of oak creek canyon in Sedona, Arizona. This is one of the best things to do in Sedona. It offers hiking and water activities for all ages.

Best time to visit for the best things to do in Sedona

Sedona is almost perfect year-round. The summer temperatures can reach the upper 90s or low 100s for a short portion of the day, so it’s not terrible, but also not amazing.

The best time to visit Sedona is March through June, and then October through December as the second best time. Springtime in Sedona is fantastic, and you’ll have incredible weather with much to do. Honestly, you might be able to knock out most of the best things to do in Sedona in a week!

If you plan to do more water-based activities, coming in May or June will fully quench your thirst.

These are my favorite Sedona hikes.

Sedona has more amazing hikes than most people can do in a month, let alone a shorter trip. Even with that said, you should try to hit the trails as much as possible to soak in the beauty of this region. As a hiker, these are the best things to do in Sedona.

Here are some of my favorite hikes in Red Rock Country.

  • Bear Mountain
  • Boyton Canyon
  • Devils Bridge
  • Soldier’s Pass (which includes seven sacred pools)
  • Wilson Mountain
  • Hangover Loop Trail
  • Doe Mountain
  • Cathedral Rock and the Vortex

You can drive to the top of Airport Mesa, so the walk is hardly anything. For Cathedral, though, you’ll have anywhere between a half mile to a mile walk uphill, depending on where you want to sit and watch the sunset.

Somewhat Budget Lodging in Sedona: Los Abrigados Resort and Spa Mid-Level Lodging in Sedona: Residence Inn by Marriott Luxury Lodging in Sedona: The Enchantment Resort

Unfortunately, there are only decent camping availabilities around Sedona. To the south, about 25 minutes, is a lot of dispersed camping—however, the crowds there can be hit or miss.

We camped there one night in March of 2021 and found the people next to us… not people we’d like to be around again.

North of Sedona, in Oak Creek Canyon, has a good amount of established camping. But those get scooped up early, so you must plan your trip months in advance.

Finally, if you go above Oak Creek Canyon, there’s more dispersed camping there, and less crowded than other areas. If you’re looking for a cheaper way to enjoy the best things to do in Sedona, camping is the way to go!

In addition, the holiday spirit of this destination will surprise you with its calendar full of activities and you can say goodbye to the year enjoying the local attractions.

Among the best things to do in Sedona in December are taking an adventure tour of the surrounding desert, enjoying the Festival of Lights, discovering the snowy landscapes of northern Arizona, celebrating New Year's Eve in the city's restaurants, attending the popular concerts of this destination and visiting the Red Rock High School flea market.

1. Join a Sedona Canyon Adventure Tour

Taking an adventure tour to Sedona Canyon in December is an experience that allows you to explore the Arizona desert in a unique season. December is an ideal month to visit the canyon, as daytime temperatures are usually milder and more pleasant, making it easier to enjoy outdoor activities without the extreme heat of summer.

One of the most popular activities in Sedona Canyon in December is hiking. The numerous nature trails that wind through the canyon offer opportunities to explore the fascinating geology and spectacular colors of the rock formations. In addition, the desert vegetation takes on a greener, more vibrant hue after the fall rains, adding a special touch to the landscape.

2. Visit the snow-capped desert in northern Arizona.

An exceptional experience during the month of December is to visit northern Arizona where it combines snow with the unique appeal of the desert. Often, the idea of the desert conjures up images of burning sand dunes and prickly pear cactus, but if you visit Sedona in winter , you can discover how this region transforms into a landscape of contrasts.

Antelope Canyon, located in the Antelope Canyon Navajo Reservation, is famous for its narrow passages carved by wind and water over thousands of years. During the winter, this site becomes one of the essential destinations to discover this climatic phenomenon. The 4 things you definitely can't miss if you visit Sedona, Arizona

  • I spent three days in  Sedona, Arizona , a hiking paradise known for its red rocks and desert beauty.
  • Devil's Bridge and Chapel of the Holy Cross are impressive to see.
  • It's difficult to climb Cathedral Rock but the views are worth it.

Sedona, Arizona, is an outstanding travel spot, drawing visitors with its radiant red rocks, exceptional hiking trails , and reputation as a spiritual mecca.

Recently, my husband and I drove from Houston and spent three full days there.

We brought our two small dogs and found many restaurants to be pet-friendly, with some even offering canine menus . Still, we left the pups at our cabin during strenuous hikes.

Here are four things that are not to be missed in Sedona.

Chapel of the Holy Cross is built into the rock formations

The Chapel of the Holy Cross is wedged directly into the dramatic red rocks.

You can get to the small chapel by taking a sloping uphill walk or by paying one of the golf-cart drivers at the bottom to bring you to the top.

I opted for the ride since we had our dogs with us.

Visitors can go inside and sit, pray, or light a candle. The chapel is free to visit.

My husband and I enjoyed sitting outside on the wraparound stone benches and taking in the incredible panoramic view.

Devil's Bridge is a popular spot to take an awe-inspiring photo

Travelers could spend weeks in Sedona and not hit a fraction of the hiking trails, but nothing compares to Devil's Bridge.

This large sandstone arch, which looks like a rock bridge, is reachable by trails in the Coconino National Forest.

After our 2-mile hike there, I took one look at the landmark's sharp elevation and stopped. It's not for the faint of heart.

We saw some fearless hikers do handstands or jump in the air for photos on the ledge while the rest of us held our breath because of the sheer drop-off on each side.

By the time my husband reached the front of the line to take photos — about a 20-minute wait — I decided I'd go, too.

The bridge was wider than it originally appeared, but I made sure not to look down when it was my turn.

The drive to Oak Creek Canyon is one of the most beautiful in the country

My favorite part of most trips is taking a scenic drive , and the road to Oak Creek Canyon is first-rate.

We drove State Route 89A from Sedona to Oak Creek Vista, a National Scenic Byway, and the curvy road hugs the jagged red cliffs on one side with a deep lush canyon on the other. It's a visual feast.

There are picnic areas, swimming holes , and a state park along the way, but staying in your car is just as enjoyable as walking around.

At one point, we got out at the scenic overlook where Native American vendors were selling jewelry and crafts and bought some to take home.

Cathedral Rock is a challenging climb but worth it for the view

Many consider Sedona to be a sacred spot due to its vortexes, a place where energy is said to enter in and out of the Earth. Cathedral Rock is widely believed to be one of them.

I didn't have a spiritual experience but I enjoyed my time there.

The Cathedral Rock trail is fairly short (about a mile), but it's steep and more of a vertical rock climb than a hike.

I'm in fairly good shape, and it took me two hours — and both hands and legs — to make it to the top.

Luckily, I'd packed snacks and water into a small backpack and took frequent breaks.

The crowds got thinner the higher we climbed, but it was encouraging to see dogs and young kids making it further along the trail.

Reaching the end of the trail was a monumental feat.

I don't know if I felt the vortex, but I felt a rush of euphoria, pride, and awe looking out over the red-rock hills of Sedona.

Sedona is a couple of hours south of the Grand Canyon and well worth the drive. Courtenay Rudzinski
