Package Terms and Conditions

It’s essential to be aware of the terms and conditions when purchasing any drink packages. Both the Cheers and Bottomless Bubbles packages come with a daily limit on the number of drinks. Additionally, when one person in a cabin purchases a package, all other eligible people in the cabin must purchase the same package.

The packages are non-refundable and non-transferable. Also, the entire duration of the cruise must be covered by the package. Drink packages are not available for purchase on 1 and 2-day cruise s, cruises departing from Australia, and on a Carnival ship chartered for a private event.

Understanding these terms helps you make the most of your drink packages and enhances your Carnival Cruise experience.

Carnival Cruise Drink Policies

Carnival Cruise Drink Policies

Carnival Cruise Line has specific drink policies in place to ensure that all guests have a safe and enjoyable experience on board. These policies are also designed to comply with the laws and regulations of the various ports of call where the cruise ships dock. Understanding these rules can help you avoid any surprises and potential consequences.

What You Can Bring Onboard

One of the most common questions for cruise-goers is about bringing their own beverages on board. Carnival Cruise permits passengers to bring a restricted quantity of non-alcoholic drinks and wine or champagne aboard. Specifically, guests can carry up to 12 sealed cans or cartons (each 12 ounces) of non-alcoholic drinks like sodas, juices, and milk. Additionally, each adult (21 or older) is allowed one wine or champagne bottle, no larger than 750 ml.

It’s essential to note that these drinks must be carried in your carry-on luggage during embarkation. If any drinks are found in your checked luggage, they can possibly be confiscated.

Consequences of Breaking the Rules

If you are found in violation of Carnival’s drink policies, there can be consequences. For example, if you bring alcohol onboard beyond the allowed one bottle of wine or champagne, it will be confiscated and stored until the end of the cruise. In cases of excessive violations or if underage drinking is involved, you may face more severe consequences, such as being removed from the ship , facing fines , or even being banned from future cruises .

Tips for Complying with Drink Policies

Complying with Carnival’s drink policies is quite straightforward. Here are some tips to avoid any issues:

💡 Read and understand the policies : Make sure you are familiar with the drink policies before you board the ship.

💡 Limit your carry-ons : Stick to the allowed quantities and types of drinks in your carry-on luggage.

💡 Avoid sneaking alcohol : Attempts to sneak alcohol on board in water bottles or other containers are often detected by security.

💡 Respect the legal drinking age : The minimum drinking age is 21 on a Cruise ship. Make sure to carry a valid ID if you plan to consume alcohol.

💡 Drink responsibly : While enjoying your time at sea, remember to drink responsibly and consider your fellow passengers.

Complying with Carnival's drink policies

Following these tips will help you stay within the rules and enjoy your cruise to the fullest. After all, cruising Carnival is all about having a good time without any worries.

Are Drinks Included in the Cruise Fare?

When you book a cruise with Carnival Cruise Line , you’ll find that some beverages are included in your cruise fare, while others are not. Understanding what’s included can help you manage your budget more effectively during your voyage.

Included in your cruise fare are basic beverages like tap water, tea, coffee, and some juices that are available in the main dining room and buffet area. These drinks are free and unlimited. On the other hand, alcoholic beverages , soda, bottled water, specialty coffees, and other premium drinks are not included in the cruise fare. You will need to pay extra for these, either à la carte or through one of Carnival’s drink packages.

Can You Share a Drink Package?

Sharing drink packages on Carnival ships is not allowed . When you purchase a package, it is tied specifically to your boarding card, and you can’t transfer or share it with other guests. Each guest must purchase their own drink package.

Attempting to share your drink package with others could result in penalties or even revocation of your drink package without a refund. It’s important to follow the rules and only use your drink package for your own consumption.

How to Save Money on Drinks

If you enjoy indulging in beverages while cruising, here are some tips to help you save money on drinks during a cruise on a Carnival ship:

  • Take advantage of the “Cheers” package : If you plan to drink a lot, the “Cheers” package can offer substantial savings. Just be sure to calculate your likely consumption to ensure that it’s cost-effective.
  • Bring your own wine or champagne : Carnival allows each guest to bring one bottle of wine or champagne on board. Enjoying your own bottle can save you money compared to purchasing wine on the ship.
  • Look for drink specials : Keep an eye out for daily drink specials or happy hours at the ship’s bars. These can offer significant discounts on popular beverages.
  • Limit soda consumption : If you’re a soda drinker, consider limiting your consumption or opting for the “Bottomless Bubbles” package for limitless soda and juices.
  • Stick to the included beverages : You can save money by sticking to the drinks included in your cruise fares, such as tap water, coffee, tea, and some juices.

By following these tips, you can enjoy your favorite drinks on Carnival ships without breaking the bank.

Staying Hydrated

stay hydrated on carnival cruise

While enjoying your drinks on a Carnival cruise ship, it’s important to stay hydrated, especially if you’re indulging in alcoholic beverages. Dehydration can make you feel unwell and impact your cruise experience. Here are some tips to help you stay hydrated:

💡 Alternate with water : For every alcoholic drink, have a glass of water. This will help you stay hydrated and reduce the effects of alcohol.

💡 Carry a water bottle : Keep a refillable water bottle with you and sip water throughout the day. Carnival provides water stations where you can refill your bottle.

💡 Limit your alcohol consumption : Moderation is key. Overindulging can lead to dehydration and other unpleasant effects.

💡 Eat well : Eating regularly can help counter the effects of alcohol and keep you hydrated. Opt for water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables.

Remember, staying hydrated is crucial for enjoying your cruise to the fullest. Drink responsibly and make the most of your time at sea.

Navigating the Carnival drink menus and the various beverage options onboard can be a breeze if you come prepared. Remember to explore the diverse offerings from signature cocktails to craft beers across the many themed bars, and consider investing in drink packages if you plan to indulge. Always stay within Carnival’s drink policies to avoid any hiccups during your cruise.

Can one person get a drink package on Carnival?

Of course, it is never mandatory to buy a drink package. The drink packages on Carnival are add-ons to your cruise vacation. However, there is no sharing of the package or using your package to order drinks for other cruisers.

So, if one guest in the stateroom wishes to purchase a beverage package, each adult in the cabin that’s old enough needs to purchase one as well. Cruisers must be 21 years of age or older to purchase the Cheers program (alcoholic beverage package).

What are the drink packages on Carnival cruises?

Carnival Cruise Line offers two drink packages. There is the alcoholic drink package, also known as the Cheers! Beverage Program. There is also the unlimited soda program, called the Bottomless Bubbles package.

This does not just apply to the package; even if you want to buy additional drinks a la carte, you will not be permitted to within that 24 hour period.

No matter what package you choose, you can only get one drink at a time with a five minute wait time between orders. There are no double shots as that is considered ordering two drinks at once.

Carnival Cruise Line Beverage Packages

If guests purchase drinks for friends, one drink will count towards the Cheers package and the remaining drinks will be charged to the guest’s Sail and Sign account.

Of course, staff do have the right to refuse you bar service if you are intoxicated. Knowing your limits is just as important on a cruise ship as it is during your regular life!

What drinks are included in the Carnival drink packages?

When it comes to a Carnival drink package, cruisers can select from a number of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options. Below, we detail what is included in the drink packages on Carnival.

Cheers Program

Carnival Cruise Line offers only one alcoholic drink package, known as the Cheers Beverage Program. Many cruisers refer to this as the unlimited drink package, as it includes essentially all alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks for a flat daily rate.

The pricing of this package starts at $59.95 per person, per day (plus gratuity).

This plan covers all alcoholic beverages including beers, wine, and champagne by the glass, as well as cocktails and spirits worth up to $20. This also includes the self-serve beer stations.

Further, this Carnival drink package also includes soda, virgin cocktails, juices, specialty coffees and teas, milkshakes, energy drinks, Powerade and Vitamin Water, and 500 ml bottled water.

The Cheers Program also entitles cruisers to a 25% discount off of any drink costing more than the $20 allotment, wine and champagne by the bottle, and beverage seminars and classes.

Carnival Panorama Ship Scorecard

However, there are some exclusions to the Cheers Program. This includes beverages sold in souvenir glasses and bottles of liquor. Also, drinks sold at the gangway, through room service, or the mini-bar are also not included in this beverage package. Sharing cocktails, pitchers, tubes, and buckets are not included either.

While there is a limit of 15 alcoholic drinks with this Carnival drink package, soda and other non-alcoholic beverages do not count towards this limit.

Summary of what’s included in the Cheers drink package:

  • All spirits, cocktails, beer, and wine by the glass with a $20 or less menu price
  • Sodas, zero-proof frozen cocktails, energy drinks, specialty coffee, hot tea, 500 ml bottled water, and other non-alcoholic bottled beverages
  • Packaged water in the main dining room and specialty restaurants
  • 25% discount off the menu price for any spirit or wine by the glass above $20
  • 25% discount off the menu price for wine and champagne by the bottle
  • 25% discount off beverage seminars and classes

Bottomless Bubbles

Bottomless Bubbles is Carnival Cruise Line’s unlimited soda package. For one flat fee, cruisers can enjoy all the fountain soda and juices they want with this package.

The pricing of this package starts at $6.95 per child (17 years of age and younger) or $9.50 per adult (plus 18% gratuity).

Like the alcoholic drink package, you can only order one drink at a time, either a 16 ounce glass of soda or a 10 ounce glass of juice. Soda choices include Pepsi products. For juices, cruisers have the option of orange juice, cranberry juice, tomato juice, pineapple juice, and grapefruit juice.

Carnival Cruise Line Beverage Packages

Again, like the Cheers Program, this package does NOT work off the ship, even at Half Moon Cay or Princess Cays. Bottled water and specialty coffee are also not part of this package. Other exclusions include beverages sold at the gangway and room services orders.

Summary of what’s included in the Bottomless Bubbles drink package:

  • Soft Drinks/Soda (Pepsi products)
  • Juices: orange juice, cranberry juice, tomato juice, pineapple juice and grapefruit juice

Carnival Drink Prices

Below are a list of the sample drink prices on Carnival Cruise Line. You can also check out our bar menus from a recent Carnival Celebration cruise to determine the cost of your favorite beverages.

  • Beer: starting at $6.50
  • Wine by the glass: starting at $9.50
  • Mixed Drinks: $7.50 – $20.00
  • Specialty Cocktails: starting at $10.50
  • Soft Drinks: $2.75
  • Specialty Coffees: $2.50 – $4.25
  • Energy Drinks: $4.95
  • Water: $1.50 – $5.00

Is the Carnival Drink Package Worth It?

This brings us back to the original question, are Carnival drink packages a good value? Essentially, the question is whether you will consume enough beverages to make the purchase “worth it.”

Below are the average costs of the different beverages within each category. Using this chart, you can do the quick math to see if you would routinely hit the daily drink costs of the above packages.

Ultimately, you need to know your own habits to determine if the drink packages on Carnival will be a good value during your cruise.

Other considerations include the length of the cruise and how many ports of call are on the itinerary.

For instance, will you be able to sustain the same drinking pattern over the course of a 10-day or 14-day cruise? If your cruise is port intensive, will you be on the ship enough to make good use of your Carnival drink package?

Carnival Celebration Bars

The drink packages on Carnival certainly do offer convenience, as you never have to worry about the bar tab at the end of the cruise! They also make your cruise feel more all-inclusive.

While we don’t go overboard with alcoholic drinks, we do consume plenty of bottled water, specialty coffee, Vitamin Water/Powerade, and the occasional soda. Combining our alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink purchases, we usually recognize a cost savings with the beverage package.

Other Considerations

Of course, if you wish to forego a beverage package, you can always pay a la carte for your drinks purchased on the ship. You can also purchase items, such as packs of bottled water, pre-cruise via your cruise planner to be delivered to your stateroom.

Further, on embarkation day, guests are allowed to bring onboard a maximum of 12, 12-ounce cans/cartons of non-alcoholic beverages per person in their carry-on luggage. Guests 21 years of age and older may also bring onboard one 750ml bottle of unopened wine or champagne in their carry-on.

Thanks for all of this info. My wife and I will be taking our first cruise on the Carnival Panorama in May.

I like the drink package but do not agree with the pricing structure. For instance on a five day cruise you are charged for the day you leave the ship and you must leave by 8 A.M. why are you charging for that day? In addition the first day you don’t board until lunch so half that day is gone. I think a 5 day cruise should be based on a 4 day pricing structure, a seven day cruise should be a six day pricing structure, etc.

On a 5day cruise you only use for 4 days, so why do we get charged for 5 days.

Our first cruise (4ngt/5 day) we kept a conservative tab on drink expenditures and did not buy the package. We ended up spending between $80.00 -100.00 more then the unlimited Royal Caribbean Drink Pkg. This trip booked for 21 we have bought the DP for 50% off which means we should be $180.00 ahead-roughly speaking. In our case the UDP is a great bargain.

It’s infuriating to me that Carnival does not have a non-alchoholic refreshment package like Royal Carribean. I would love to not have to pay the more expensive price for a drink package that includes alchohol that I will not be consuming! Royal carribean offers this exact package and I love it. It’s a bit more than the soda package but obviously isnt as much as the packages that include alchohol. It’s about $25 a day and you can actually use it on their private island. Come on Carribean!!

They do. It’s called “Bottomless Bubbles” and its $8.50 a day. “Enjoy ice-cold refreshments during meals, during shows, during, well… anytime you want with Bottomless Bubbles. This unlimited program lets you indulge in all-you-can-drink soda and juice for the full length of your cruise. Sweet! Bottomless Bubbles is available for purchase at the Lobby, Casino and Pool Bars. Restrictions apply.”

But the BB package does not include the mocktails, eg virgin mary. Other cruise lines offer soda, juice and mocktail packages.

oops, sorry. I meant, come on Carnival.

Is carnival “considering” allowing the Cheers package on the private island (Half Moon Cay) for 2021 cruises? We have booked the Christmas Bahamas cruise on the Dream in December 2021. BTW- can’t wait to get back cruising again!!!!

Hey we are on the same cruise . It’s our first time cruising.

Do they have non-alcoholic beer on board? If so, is it included in the Cheers package? I can’t find any info on it and I’ve been on hold for over an hour with Carnival Customer Service.

Yes. They have Buckler and O’Douls.

does carnival offer seltzers (trulys, white claw, high noon, etc…) on board?

Interesting… If I purchase the BB package (for 4nights/5days), I am losing out. I cannot board the first day until after 12pm, I cannot take advantage of my BB purchase on either private island, and the cruise is over at 8am the fifth day. Right?

This info is not correct. if there are more than one person in the cabin that wants the cheers package everyone has to purchase it. Not available for only one person. Unless the person is underage. They do this so no one will share drinks. However we all know it is all about the money.

Why wouldn’t it be “All about the money”? It’s a business, not a charity.

Well on a 5-day cruise you actually only get 4 days use of drink pkg but get charged for 5 days. Doesn’t make sense. We disembark on 5th day.

8 best drinks to order with a cruise ship beverage package (and 3 to avoid)

Erica Silverstein

Editor's Note

If you're going to spend $60 to $140 per day for a cruise ship drink package , you will want to make sure you're getting the best value. Order the right drinks and you can definitely get your money's worth. Choose the wrong drinks, and you'll end up spending more money than necessary.

The most cost-effective option is to get a cruise line drink package free as a booking perk . If you can't do that, focus on these eight best drinks to order with a beverage package to get the most out of your alcohol budget. I'll also clue you into three drink types that will work against your plan to make that package worth the money.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Expensive cocktails

If you prepay a flat price for alcohol, you can order pricey specialty cocktails without worrying about paying $15 to $20 a pop. Hands down, the best drink you can order from a value standpoint is the most expensive cocktail that falls within your plan's limit.

For example, Carnival Cruise Line includes beverages that cost $20 or less in its Cheers Beverage Program. The limit is $15 with Norwegian Cruise Line 's Unlimited Open Bar Beverage Package and $14 with Royal Caribbean 's Deluxe Beverage Package. Prioritize drinks that cost close to the limit. If you go over, most onboard bars will charge the difference, so you might want to try that expensive cocktail for just a few bucks.

Name-brand liquor

Order a gin and tonic, and the bartender is likely to pour you the cheapest house brand of gin he's got on hand. Get the most from your beverage package by asking for your tonic with Tanqueray or Bombay Sapphire.

The same rule of thumb applies to any liquor. Ask for your booze by name to get the nicer, more expensive drink and the best value from your beverage package. Just make sure the brand you're requesting is included in your package — otherwise you'll be charged extra. (Note that if your cruise line offers multiple tiers of drink packages, the top-shelf liquors might only be included in the priciest option.)

Weirdest drink on the menu

carnival cruise line beverage list

I like to try new drinks, but at $10 to $15 a cocktail, it can be an expensive experiment. With a drink package, however, experimentation is a risk-free proposition — especially on lines that have no limit on the number of alcoholic drinks you can purchase in a 24-hour period.

Try that fruit-infused vodka, the crazy-colored shot or the spiked cappuccino. There's no extra cost if you don't like it, and you only have to wait a few minutes before you can order a replacement.

The drink doesn't have to be eye-raising to be experimental. Use your beverage package to sample new wines by the glass or a cocktail you've never tried. You might discover your new favorite drink.

Specialty coffee

Cruisers have trouble leaving their Starbucks addiction behind them and flock to the extra-charge coffee cafes onboard. With a beverage package, you can indulge your caffeine addiction with the good stuff at no extra charge.

Make your morning latte a vacation habit, or grab a chai tea on a rainy sea day or an iced coffee on a hot one. Nonalcoholic drinks do not count toward any drink limits, so the more you sip, the more value you get from your drink package.

Bottled water

Many cruisers don't like the taste of the ship's tap water. If you fall into that category, bottled water is another great beverage package buy, even if it's not the most earth-friendly option.

Grab a sealed bottle from the poolside bar to bring back to your deck chair so you can stay hydrated while you sunbathe. Collect bottles from the onboard bars to stash in your cabin so you can drink them after a shipboard pub crawl or throw them in your day pack when you head off the ship.

Prefer sparkling water with dinner? You can order it with no second thoughts when you have a beverage package.

Embarkation day drinks

carnival cruise line beverage list

Do you feel a little awkward making a beeline for the bar as soon as you step inside a cruise ship on embarkation day? You definitely should not feel this way if you've purchased a beverage package. The packages are priced by the length of your cruise, and embarkation day counts.

Grab a celebratory bubbly to mark the start of your cruise. Start your vacation with a glass of wine to unwind. It's five o'clock somewhere, and skipping out on embarkation day drinks means you're paying for a full day of beverage service you are not using. You might as well change that up and get more bang for your buck.

Frozen drinks on private islands

Like I said earlier, cruise lines price their beverage packages by the day, and you can't prorate the pricing to skip port days when you're hardly on the ship. Most of us can't party all night after touring in the sun all day, which makes it hard to break even on the package cost on port days.

The bars on certain cruise line private islands — Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay , Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay and MSC Cruises' Ocean Cay — let you use your drink package ashore. (Half Moon Cay and Harvest Caye do not.) That pina colada set against a palm tree backdrop will jazz up your social media feed and is a great choice for making your beverage package worthwhile.

Other nonalcoholic beverages

Some lines, such as Carnival and Princess Cruises , limit passengers to 15 alcoholic drinks per day, which can make it harder to break even on the package costs. Make the plan cost-effective (and drink responsibly) by interspersing your bar drinks with nonalcoholic options, such as soda, energy drinks, freshly squeezed juices and other bottled beverages like Gatorade or Honest Tea.

Even better, if you can purchase resealable or unopened bottles or cans, you can save them to take off the ship in port. That strategy will help you get full value from your drink package on days you're mainly off the ship.

3 drinks to avoid

carnival cruise line beverage list

You don't really need to avoid any drinks when you have a beverage package, but some choices aren't as useful as others for making the package cost-effective. If you can, go easy on the following drinks — or reconsider whether that beverage package is the right choice for you in the first place.

Beer is usually the cheapest alcoholic drink on board, and it can be filling. If you only drink beer, you might find it more difficult to reach the break-even point for your drink package. (Others will have no trouble downing eight or more beers a day.) Whether you crave craft brews or stick to Bud Light, ask if your cruise line has a cheaper beer-and-wine-only package (such as Windstar Cruises ' Topmast Discoveries Beer & Wine Package) that might make more sense for you.

Well drinks

If your drinks are already paid for, you have no incentive to order cheap well drinks when you can get name-brand liquor for the same price. If you don't specify which vodka or rum you want, the bartender will give you the most basic option. Call out your booze by name, and if you're not sure, ask the bartender which bottles are included in your package. This tip is especially true if you've paid extra for the priciest, most inclusive drink package your cruise line offers.

Bottles of wine

It's true that you will get a 20% to 40% discount on bottles of wine with most cruise line drink packages. But you're still paying extra for alcohol when you have already paid for wine by the glass, beer and cocktails. Filling up on extra-fee wine might prevent you from ordering as many additional drinks as you normally would, keeping you from breaking even on your package price. Stick to wine by the glass, and you can get all your vino without plunking down more cash.

Sure, you can't get all the same vintages by the glass as you can order by the bottle, and you might want a nice wine to celebrate a special occasion. If you intend to order several bottles of wine during your cruise, you might be better off with a wine-only package instead of a broader alcoholic beverage package.

Bottom line

Most people who purchase a cruise drink package will order a variety of alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages each day. However, if you're set on getting the most value from your package purchase, you'll want to be smart about which drinks you order. If you're not at least breaking even with your wine, beer, soda, coffee and cocktail orders, you might want to rethink whether you've chosen the right beverage package for your drinking style.

Carnival Offering New Range of Non-Alcoholic Cocktails

Carnival Cruise Line’s Alchemy Bar will now offer alcohol-free cocktails, featuring non-alcoholic spirits from Lyre’s.

carnival cruise line beverage list

On March 14, 2023, Carnival Cruise Line announced the debut of a new collection of non-alcoholic cocktails, inspired by popular drinks served at the cruise line’s Alchemy Bar .

Favorite cocktails from the Alchemy Bar reimagined with alcohol-free Lyre’s spirits

Guest-favorite drinks from Alchemy Bar’s mixologists are now available with alcohol-free spirits produced by industry-leading distiller Lyre’s , making Carnival the first cruise line to offer a full range of alcohol-free cocktails .

“Our new partnership with Lyre’s gives guests who want non-alcoholic cocktails the best options at sea,” said Zachary Sulkes , Carnival’s senior director of beverage operations.

“We’ve seen popularity for non-alcoholic cocktails grow rapidly, so to meet that trend, our mixologists have been working to craft alternative versions of our most popular cocktails with none of the alcohol, but all the flavor,” Sulkes continued.

Lyre’s is the world’s most-awarded line of non-alcoholic spirits . The company uses all-natural flavors, including essences, extracts, and distillates to match the aroma, taste, and appearance you find in traditional spirits.

Popular Alchemy Bar cocktails recreated with non-alcoholic Lyre’s

Carnival has shared a selection of seven new alcohol-free cocktails on the Alchemy Bar menu:

  • Martini Seduction:  Red passion fruit nectar, fresh lime juice, and a hint of orange mix with Lyre’s White Cane instead of vodka to create this swoon-worthy drink.
  • Spicy Chipotle Pineapple Martini:  Lyre’s Agave Blanco stands in for vodka to bring this spicy, pineapple cocktail into its non-alcoholic form.
  • The Remedy:  Orange juice, pineapple, and fresh lime juice are mixed with Lyre’s White Cane and Spiced Cane instead of dark and coconut rum.
  • Hearts of Fire:  This award-winning concoction featuring fresh thyme and raspberries is re-imagined with Lyre’s Dry London instead of gin.
  • Restorative Basil Drop:  Lyre’s Dry London is mixed with fresh basil and citrus to stimulate and restore the senses.
  • The Perfect Storm:  This invigorating boost features strawberry puree, fresh lime, and a hit of rosemary and Lyre’s Dry London instead of vodka.
  • Cucumber Sunrise:  Another award-winning favorite among Carnival guests delivers the same light and delicious flavor with watermelon nectar, cucumber, lime juice, and a splash of orange juice mixed with Lyre’s Agave Blanco instead of vodka.

Alchemy Bar is featured on nearly every Carnival ship sailing from the US. The new, non-alcoholic versions of the popular cocktails will be offered on ships homeported in Australia at a later date.

In addition to the full range of non-alcoholic cocktails offered at Alchemy Bar, Carnival’s main dining rooms will now serve Lyre’s alcohol-free prosecco among the many wines offered across the fleet.

Carnival has to get up to speed about a non Alcoholic drink package that includes not only mock drinks but other drinks as well such as bottled water, sodas, tea, and milkshakes. Don't be so cheap everything can't be about making a buck.

Monday 16th of October 2023

Hi Gary, I agree that the non-alcoholic drink package on Carnival isn't the best. When I cruise on Carnival without the Cheers package, I always carry on my own tea bags and usually a pack of seltzer or fizzy lemonade. I also pre-order a case of water to be delivered to my room because it's much cheaper that way. But I hear you, the included drinks in their Bottomless Bubbles package are really lacking unless you just like soda! Thanks for stopping by :)

Carnival Cruise Line makes key beverage package change

When you board a cruise ship, you lose the ability to pop by a store and buy anything you might be missing.

That can be frustrating if you forget your over-the-counter allergy medicine or your favorite shampoo. To a certain extent those items are sold on board, at fairly hefty markups. The selection varies heavily by not just cruise line but by cruise ship.

Some Royal Caribbean Oasis-class ships, for example, have a selection of vending machines that offer a wider array of products ranging from sunblock and moisturizer to toiletries and feminine hygiene products.

Related: Carnival Cruise Line risks a Bud Light-style backlash

Many ships, however, operate outlets more like hotel gift shops, where a small area is dedicated to a limited array of products. You might be able to buy a razor or a toothbrush, but you will have only one choice.

You might be able to find what you need in port, but you face many restrictions regarding what you can bring on board. In some cases, like alcohol, soda and bottled water, cruise lines have very strict rules about what you can bring on board.

Carnival and Royal Caribbean have similar policies.

"On embarkation day, a small quantity of non-alcoholic beverages (i.e., sparkling water, sodas, energy drinks, juice, and milk), packaged in cans or cartons, may be brought on board and must be in the guest's carry-on luggage," Carnival says on its website. "A small quantity is considered a maximum of 12 sealed, unopened cans/cartons of 12-ounces/354-ml each or less, per person."

Carnival wants to sell you more

Carnival and Royal Caribbean make roughly as much money from onboard and presail purchases as they do from ticket sales. Onboard beverage sales are a big piece of that. In addition to being able to bring the boxed or canned beverages listed above, Carnival (and Royal Caribbean) have one other exception:

"At the beginning of the cruise during embarkation day only, guests (21 years of age and older) may bring one 750-ml bottle of sealed/unopened wine or champagne, per person, in their carry-on luggage," Carnival added.

"Outside this exception, all liquor, beer, and other forms of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited in both carry-on and checked luggage and such items will be confiscated and discarded and no compensation will be provided."

Both cruise lines provide water, basic coffee, and tea, as well as some flavored waters in various onboard locations. Passengers who want bottled water, however, will have to pay for it.

You can buy bottles as you need at the many bars onboard or you can preorder water to your cabin.

Carnival has recently angered some passengers by raising the price of its in-cabin water packages that are booked precruise.

Carnival water prices are rising

The cruise line offers a 12-pack of bottled water (16.9-ounce bottle/500-ml bottle) for $14.95.

"This is the third price increase on this popular beverage product since November 2022,"  Cruise Hive reports. "Initially, the 12-pack was $4.95 ($0.42 per bottle), but at that time, it was doubled to $9.95 ($0.83 per bottle). Then, in December 2023, the price was increased again, to $11.95 per 12-pack (a drop under $1 per bottle)."

Royal Caribbean has a similar package that's almost twice the water, as it offers 12  one-liter (33.8 oz.) bottles of Evian for $30.99. That's roughly comparable to Carnival's cost on an ounce-by-ounce basis.

Both cruise lines also sell bottled water at every bar on the ship with 16.9-ounce bottles selling for $2.50 to $3.50 apiece (prices and brands available can vary).

Both cruise lines also add an 18% charge (which Carnival calls a delivery fee and Royal Caribbean calls a gratuity), as they do on all beverages and beverage packages.

Carnival Brand Ambassador John Heald addressed the water-price increase and the customer pushback it created in a recent video blog.

"So, I've had about a thousand comments about water. I'm not going to say too much, we've increased the price," he said. "Some of you understand, some of you don't."

Heald said he'd collected all the comments and sent them to the appropriate people at the cruise line.

"I don't really have anything else to say on that specifically. It's still far more affordable than airports and hotels and resorts and theme parks," he added. "I'm glad to be here to be vented at and I certainly have been."

Not everyone has been nice.

"One lady, a lady, told me to take a bottle of water and shove it up my, well, you know where," he said.
