Your guide to Chicago’s iconic architecture

Chicago’s stunning cityscape has been shaped by some of the biggest names in architecture — Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Jeanne Gang, Daniel Burnham, and beyond. No matter where you look, the city is full of architectural wonders, from soaring skyscrapers in the heart of downtown to historic landmarks in our vibrant neighborhoods.

If you’re looking to dive into Chicago architecture, explore our must-see sites and packed list of architecture events, tours, and cruises where you can learn the fascinating stories behind the buildings.

chicago architecture tour lake

Art Deco: Maybe one of the most famous styles of architecture, Art Deco shines in Chicago’s downtown. Created in the exuberant optimism of the Roaring Twenties, Art Deco has come to represent opulence and glamour. One striking example is Chicago’s Carbide and Carbon Building, designed to look like a Champagne bottle and finished with real gold.

Notable examples: Carbide and Carbon Building, The Merchandise Mart, Chicago Board of Trade Building

Chicago School : After the Great Chicago Fire, the city began to rebuild at an extraordinary pace, leveraging the latest techniques and technology to take the city’s architecture to new heights that were previously unimaginable. Legendary architects like Burnham and Root, William Le Baron Jenney, and Louis Sullivan finished these structures with decorative elements and delicate details, making Chicago School instantly recognizable.

Notable examples: Reliance Building, Monadnock Building, Sullivan Center

International Style : The International Style is a type of modern architecture born after World War II, known for its steel-and-glass exteriors, minimal (if any) ornamentation, and open interiors. Perhaps no one did it better than Mies van der Rohe, who crafted many important Chicago buildings (the city has more of his designs than any other).

Notable examples: One Illinois Center, 330 N. Wabash

chicago architecture tour lake

Mid-Century Modernism : This distinctive style comprises many of the Chicago skyline’s most instantly recognizable buildings. Mid-Century Modern takes the technical precision of the International Style and experiments with new materials like concrete and more sculptural, organic forms (like the iconic Marina City corn cobs).

Notable examples: 875 N. Michigan Ave., Willis Tower, Marina City

Postmodernism : Some of the city’s most eye-catching buildings are those that follow the Postmodern style. While the International style adheres to clean lines and minimal decoration, Postmodernism is all about being creative, eclectic, and sometimes a little quirky. Think curved forms, asymmetry, bright colors, and generally breaking with tradition.

Notable examples: James R. Thompson Center, Harold Washington Library, 333 West Wacker Drive

Other architectural styles represented in Chicago include Deconstructivism (Pritzker Pavilion), Gothic Revival (Tribune Tower, Chicago Water Tower), Spanish Colonial Revival (Wrigley Building), and more.

The city’s neighborhoods are also filled with the city’s distinctive styles of residential architecture: bungalows, worker’s cottages, greystones, and more. See for yourself in our neighborhood historic districts . You’ll also find plenty of examples of Frank Lloyd Wright ‘s Prairie style throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs.

chicago architecture tour lake

Open House Chicago : Have you ever walked by an interesting Chicago building and wished you could take a peek inside? You’ll get your chance during Chicago’s annual Open House Chicago, a free festival hosted by the Chicago Architecture Center each October.

More than 100 significant buildings open their doors for the public to explore. Sites range from soaring skyscrapers to opulent mansions and exclusive private clubs, many of which are rarely open to the public.

Chicago Architecture Biennial : Explore the past, present, and future of architecture at the Chicago Architecture Biennial. The free event, which happens every other year, takes over the Chicago Cultural Center and other sites around the city with events and exhibits. Each exhibition is developed by a new group of curators from a variety of art and design disciplines and features new themes and collaborators from around the world.

Check out more art and architecture events in Chicago throughout the year.

City Cruises : City Cruises offers a variety of architecture tours, including elegant brunch cruises on a glass-enclosed river boat.

Mercury, Chicago’s Skyline Cruiseline : Admire epic skyline views from the river and lakefront, while enjoying narration about the city’s history.

Chicago Architecture Center River Cruise : Expert docents share the fascinating stories behind more than 50 buildings along the Chicago River from aboard Chicago’s First Lady.

Wendella Tours & Cruises : Billed as Chicago’s original architecture tour, Wendella offers tours of the city’s waterfront buildings on the Chicago River and Lake Michigan.

Shoreline Sightseeing : Gaze skywards as you sail past dozens of Chicago landmarks along the Chicago River on this engaging architecture tour.

Chicago Architecture Center

Chicago Architecture Center tours : Explore the city on foot, on the train, or on a bus — all with a highly trained docent as your guide. Choose from tours that explore must-see sites and Chicago icons or head into the neighborhoods to uncover hidden gems.

Inside Chicago Walking Tours : This locally owned tour company specializes in architectural interiors, so you can step inside some of the city’s most famous buildings. Tours explore the downtown Loop, Art Deco masterpieces, and even allegedly haunted spots.

Tours With Mike : You can take Mike’s Architecture’s Greatest Hits tour. Or you can take his irreverent Ugly Buildings tour, a unique experience that shares the untold stories of some of the city’s lesser known, but no less interesting, structures.

L Stop Tours : A family-owned company, L Stop Tours offers walking tours incorporating the city’s ‘L’ trains for a unique local perspective. Their tour of the Loop focuses on the area’s one–of–a–kind architecture, from the spectacular lobby of The Rookery to soaring skyscrapers.

A Review of Wendella’s Architecture Boat Tour in Chicago

  • In Illinois

Are you thinking about taking an architecture boat tour in Chicago?

If you ask anyone what to do when visiting Chicago, an architectural boat tour on the Chicago River is always highly recommended.

A boat tour is an easy way to see a large chunk of Chicago in a short amount of time. Plus, you get the added bonus of learning about Chicago’s history, like the Great Fire and the World’s Fair, and how it impacted Chicago’s landscape and skyline.

We took a boat tour with Wendella when we visited Chicago. We enjoyed the guide’s humor and her extensive knowledge about the city, buildings, and architects.

You have many options when it comes to Chicago River boat tours. However, we love that Wendella offers both 45 and 90-minute tours. And they are the only boat tour company that is open year-round!

The review below shares more about what to expect on a Chicago architecture tour with Wendella. Let’s dive in!

Disclosure: Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, we may receive a commission if you click through and make a purchase.

What to Expect on a Chicago River Tour

A Chicago architecture boat tour is one of the best ways to learn about the city’s history while also seeing a large chunk of the city in a short amount of time. It’s a great option if you only have one day in Chicago . But we think it’s worth doing no matter how much time you spend in the Windy City!

On a Wendella boat tour , the guides narrate the tour, sharing funny jokes and interesting stories about famous landmarks like the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower), Tribune Tower , and the Wrigley Building .

The tour offers a fascinating look into the city’s evolution, from the Great Fire of 1871 that spurred innovative architectural rebirth to the groundbreaking designs that define Chicago’s skyline today.

Wendella Architecture Tour: A Review

Tour Options

Wendella offers several different tour options to suit your time constraints and interests.

Their  45-minute Chicago River Architecture Tour  provides a short yet comprehensive tour of the city’s skyline. It shares interesting facts about the various buildings along the Chicago River (and others nearby) while sharing information about the city’s history, including the World’s Fair and the Great Fire.

Wendella also offers two 90-minute tours.  The 90-minute   Chicago River Architecture Tour  is a more extended version of the 45-minute tour, giving guests a more comprehensive tour that navigates all three branches of the Chicago River. This is the most popular tour for good reason.

Wendella’s Lake and River Architecture Tour   is their original tour offering. It not only takes you on the Chicago River but also Lake Michigan. You’ll get to enjoy and learn about Chicago’s skyline as seen from the Chicago River. Then, you’ll go through the Chicago Lock and float out onto Lake Michigan for the best view of the city.

Prices for the Wendella Chicago Boat Tour

How much a Wendella architectural boat tour costs depends on the tour you take. These are the prices as of publication:

  • The  45-minute archi t ecture tour  costs $12 for kids ages 4-12 and $27 for anyone 13 and up. Children under 4 are FREE but still require a ticket.
  • Both  90-minute tours  cost $19 for kids ages 4-12 and $42 for anyone over 12. Children ages three and under are FREE, but still, you need to reserve them a ticket.

Amenities on Board a Wendella Boat Tour

Plenty of amenities are   available to you during your architectural river tour on Wendella.

Let’s get the most critical amenity out of the way first. Yes, there are  restrooms on board ! So, if you’re visiting Chicago with kids, you don’t have to worry about them needing to use the bathroom right after the boat leaves the dock.

people sitting on the top deck of the Wendella Boat Tours Chicago Architecture tour

If you get hungry or thirsty on board, there is a  full-service bar  serving soda, wine, local beer, and cocktails. They also have some  snacks  available for purchase.

Lastly, although we recommend sitting on the top deck for the best views of the city, the below deck is climate-controlled. So, if you’re visiting Chicago on a hot day or during the winter, you’ll be plenty comfortable on board.

Wendella Chicago River Tour Experience

You’ll have fun on a Wendella boat tour! Most people agree that the Wendella architecture tour is a  more relaxed experience  compared to other Chicago boat tours. The guides tell corny jokes (almost on par with the Jungle Cruise at Disney) while sharing exciting history and tidbits about the architecture in Chicago.

The  45-mi nute tour  will take you along the Chicago River, first heading west and south before turning around. You’ll get views of the buildings in the Loop, West Loop, and River North neighborhoods, as well as the Navy Pier.

View of Chicago skyline from the Wendella Boat tour near the Navy Pier

Wendella’s  90-minute architecture tour  follows a similar route as the 45-minute, except it heads further south on the Chicago River and explores some of the north branch.

If you opt for the  90-minute Lake and River tour , you’ll experience a shorter tour on the Chicago River, but then you’ll go through the Chicago Lock and enjoy the view of the skyline from the massive Lake Michigan.

This  map  on Wendella’s website gives you an idea of where you’ll be along the river and lake.

The boat tour on the Chicago River was very  smooth . No big waves to cause rocking of the boat. Of course, if you’re prone to motion sickness, you may want to take medication or wear a patch prior to boarding. We did not do the Lake and River tour, but it is probably rougher out on Lake Michigan than the river.

Fun Fact: There are almost two dozen bridges that cross the Chicago River in the downtown area, alone. You’ll go under several of them while you’re on your architectural boat tour!

Tips for Your Wendella Boat Ride

  • Arrive early:  They ask you to arrive 15-30 minutes before the tour to allow time to board. We arrived precisely 30 minutes before the tour started, and people were already in line. If you want a seat on the top deck, get there early.
  • Sit near a speaker or close to the guide:  The guides share so many interesting facts and silly jokes you don’t want to miss them because you can’t hear them. They use a microphone, but with the sounds of the city, the wind, and other passing boats, it can be hard to hear everything.
  • Dress warmer:  Unless it’s the middle of summer, you’ll probably be a little colder on the boat than you are walking around the city. Between the water and the breeze from the boat, it makes you feel colder, so bring a jacket in the fall and spring, and don’t forget a hat and scarf in the colder months.

3 New Hotels To Build A Trip Around In 2024 From Hawaii To Paris

Released on 04/24/2024

[Narrator] Every year, Conde Nast Traveler

releases its annual hot list,

which celebrates the best hotel openings

and more from around the world.

Here, a chic new addition to New York's Nomad District,

a reimagined and lovingly restored Hawaiian retreat,

and Paris's most exclusive new address are just three

of the standout properties on this year's hot list.

New York's Nomad neighborhood has been an epicenter

of cool new hotels for over a decade now,

you know the kind of places

that actually make the hotels the destination,

but we'd say none of the others here nails the mix

of high design, phenomenal food,

and just plain fun like the Fifth Avenue Hotel.

Immediately you'll notice the design.

It's a whimsical riot of color

and curiosities from the mind

of design Master Martin Brudnizki.

Here he takes his cues from the building's gilded age roots,

but also the travels of the hotel's owner.

All of the design layers fit together.

And honestly, staying here kind of feels like

entering the wildly designed pied-à-terre

of some wealthy, distant, globe-trotting relative.

Though we're happy to say, for all the hotel's originality,

they kept the most important, most classic detail.

Bathrooms come with the deepest sinking tub

for an unmissable post-shopping soak.

Oh, and two words, martini cart.

If you allow yourself just one indulgence here,

it has to be the happy hour martini cart

they wheel up to your room,

with the most perfectly poured cocktails

with all the accoutrements.

It's bliss.

But word of advice, that should not be in place

of the downstairs portrait bar.

A moody, sexy cocktail lounge

that fills up fast by the trendiest of New Yorkers.

For a complete change of scene, the legacy lives on,

on Hawaii's big island where the Rosewood group of hotels

and resorts has revived the beloved Kona Village

with a fresh twist.

From the 150-hale or bungalows,

to the resort's own outrigger canoe,

which guests can take out for sunrise paddles,

the village pulls in its destination at every opportunity.

Though the historic grounds, black sand beaches

on acres of pools makes it easy to spend all day outdoors,

you definitely will not want

to skip at least an afternoon at the Spa Asaya.

It's built right into the lava flow,

and you can actually see Hualalai live volcano

off in the distance.

That breezy indoor/outdoor design carries over

to the rooms too,

where San Francisco-based Nicole Hollis nimbly avoids the

easy design tropes of Hawaiian kitch

by going big on texture.

The bathrooms are ginormous with alfresco showers

and loads of stone and black to mirror the lava fields

and black sand beaches visible from the lanai,

where you'll want to park yourself

for long stints in the morning over coffee

and after dusk, staring up at the stars.

The resort has some solid restaurants,

but honestly, there may not be a more perfect vacation bar

anywhere in the world than Shipwreck.

Built of an actual old boat that was owned

by the Resort's original founder.

The drinks are a lot of fun and honestly, fantastic.

Important to note, too is the resort's dedication

to sustainability.

Working with cultural advisors on how to preserve

and protect cultural sites at the hotel,

like its petroglyph field.

It all combines to a resort

that can feel like a perfect homage to the land's culture

and an environment along the most memorable

and tranquil black sand beaches.

And then there's the supremely elegant 1, Place Vendôme,

which is hard to miss right

above the Chopard Boutique in Paris's first arrondissement.

They do things a little differently here.

There is no check-in in the lobby,

but what you will find is signature Parisian glamour

with an exquisite stone staircase.

Staying here feels like you've foregone a standard hotel

in favor of your own private members club,

which in a way it is.

No non-guests are allowed through these hallowed doors.

There are just five rooms

and 10 suites in the entire property,

all of which have been masterfully created

by famed interior designer Pierre-Yves Roussel.

Each has its own personality and aesthetic point of view.

Some are done in stark whites and cobalt blues,

others have pop art style curvaceous chairs,

mosaic showers, and embroidered wallpaper.

The singular approach to design helps remind guests

that this is a more personalized approach to

what a hotel can be.

And then there's the cuisine,

masterfully prepared by luxury hospitality vet

Boris Algarra.

From the high tech kitchen,

he and his team craft dishes as beautiful

as the setting itself,

including a 24/7 breakfast menu

that are plated so beautifully,

you kind of don't want to ruin it by taking that first bite.

Also, there may be nothing more luxurious than

settling into the property's gigantic,

hug-like sofas with the most perfect coffee or tea,

or upgrading that to a glass

of red from the owner's own vineyard.

A top hotel draws in the best of food, design,

and comfort to become a destination all their own.

Any hotel that you choose will guarantee a great vacation.

And for more information on all these hotels,

including what to pack, head to cntraveler.com.

These hot list tours are brought to you by Capital One.
