Ford Taurus Owners Manual: Using cruise control

Do not use cruise control in heavy traffic, on winding roads or when the road surface is slippery. This could result in loss of vehicle control, serious injury or death.

When you are going downhill, your vehicle speed may increase above the set speed. The system will not apply the brakes. Change down a gear to assist the system in maintaining the set speed. Failure to do so could result in loss of vehicle control, serious injury or death.

Note: Cruise control will disengage if your vehicle speed decreases more than 10 mph (16 km/h) below your set speed while driving uphill.

The cruise controls are located on

The cruise controls are located on the steering wheel.

Press the ON control up and release.

The indicator will appear in the instrument cluster.

1. Accelerate to the desired speed.

2. Press the SET control upward and release.

3. Take your foot off the accelerator pedal.

The indicator will change colors in the instrument cluster.

Note: If you accelerate by pressing the accelerator pedal, the set speed will not change. When you release the accelerator pedal, you will return to the speed that you previously set.

• Press SET up or down and hold to increase or decrease the set speed.

Release the control when you reach the desired speed.

• Press SET up or down and release. The set speed will change in approximately 1 mph (2 km/h) increments.

• Press the accelerator pedal or brake pedal until you reach the desired speed. Press SET up and release.

Press CNCL or tap the brake pedal. The set speed will not be erased.

Press and release RES.

Note: The set speed is erased when you switch off cruise control.

Press the OFF control down and release or turn off the ignition.

I have a 2001 ford Taurus SES Cruise Control does not seem to turn on anymore. I checked the fuse number 17 under dash. The park/brake light relay was just replaced. I do not see anything disconnected.

360ci

Check vacuum lines for any leaks. I had one on my '99 that wasn't bad, as it would disengage cruise control after going over a bump on the highway!

They don't use vacuum lines for the speed control any more. Does the horn work? If not then the problem is probably the contacts in the steering wheel. Here's the self test you can try. Inspection and Verification Verify the customer's concern by operating speed control system to duplicate the condition. Inspect to determine if one of the following mechanical or electrical concerns apply: VISUAL INSPECTION CHART Inspect and verify that: Mechanical Actuator cable is adjusted properly without holding the throttle open or increasing idle speed. Throttle linkage operates freely and smoothly when connected to the actuator cable and speed control servo. Electrical Verify proper horn operation Verify stoplamp operation Check circuit fuses: Fuse Junction Panel Fuse 28 (15A) Fuse 6 (15A) Speed Control Indicator Bulb Inspect and verify that: Connections are complete with no loose wires or terminals. Wiring is not broken, shorted or corroded. Wiring is not misrouted. If inspection reveals obvious concern(s) that can be readily identified, repair as required. Perform the Self-Test Diagnostics. Self-Test Diagnostics WARNING: THIS TEST IS A KEY ON ENGINE OFF (KOEO) TEST ONLY THAT IS CONDUCTED IN PARK ONLY WITH EMERGENCY BRAKE FULLY ENGAGED. Enter Self-Test Diagnostics by depressing the speed control OFF switch while turning the ignition key ON, ensuring engine does not start and is not running. The speed control indicator on the instrument panel will flash once to indicate that speed control module entered the diagnostic mode. Five additional flashes at this point indicate a defective speed control servo. Release the OFF switch. Press the remaining switches in this sequence: ON, RESUME, COAST, and SET/ACCEL. IF ON, RESUME, COAST, AND SET/ACCEL SWITCHES ARE NOT DEPRESSED WITHIN 5 SECONDS AFTER ENTERING THE DIAGNOSTICS MODE, THE MODULE TIMES OUT AND THE PROCEDURE MUST BE STARTED OVER. The speed control indicator lamp will flash as each switch is depressed. Press each switch in the sequence immediately after the indicator light goes out for the previous switch. A lamp flash with the last button (SET/ACCEL) indicates that the STATIC test passed. If the lamp does not flash with the last button and there are no additional flashes of the lamp, the switch is defective. If the lamp does not flash with the last button, and additional flashes occur, follow the chart below for trouble codes: 2 Flashes - BPP defective, circuit is defective, brake applied. 3 Flashes - Deactivator switch is open or circuit defective. 4 Flashes - Vehicle speed out of range. Immediately after the static test has passed, the speed control servo will then perform a dynamic test automatically by actuating the throttle lever from 1 mm to 10 mm of travel from the idle position. During the dynamic throttle pull, observe throttle movement to witness any binding or sticking of actuator cable, proper connection of actuator cable to throttle lever, and ensure throttle returns back to idle position. If improper connection and/or binding or sticking of actuator is observed, go to Symptom Chart. Return ignition switch to the OFF position and proceed to Symptom Chart.

The horn does work. I will be checking the information I was given so far. I will run the self test. Thank you for your help so far.

I ran the test and it looks like two flashes maybe 3. Where is the Deactivator switch or BPP located? I can not find them in the manual I have.

They are on the brake pedal linkage.

Hello! I have the same problem with my cruise not working, so I will take this very complete list outside with me and see what I can see. One question--on mine, the cruise control indicator light comes on when engaged, as if it is actually working, but when the gas is released, the car decelerates. Does the lights coming on preclude the possibility of bad contacts in the steering wheel? Thanks

Maybe. It means you have power into the steering wheel on the CC circuit and a signal as an input into the speed control module. The SCM turns on the light. Either the SCM is not putting out an output for the servo motor. I would check the connector first. Follow the two throttle cables back away from the TB and one goes to the firewall and the other goes to the SCM.

Um..well, I hate to sound like a GIRL, but I am...a girl that is. Sigh. TB? I assume not tuberculosis. I know that I need to go into the mechanic and have this stuff looked at and worked on, but I like to have a general idea what is wrong so as to sound like I know whatthehecktheyaretalkingabout so as not to be cheated utterly. I was widowed awhile back, and my husband always took care of this stuff so I don't know a heck of a lot. Though I am learning! I also kind of get a kick out of doing things that I am capable of doing. I also have access to a decent auto repair database through the public library, and if I understand enough about the generalities I am able to query the datebase, which sometimes has PICTURES! I have been able to fix the occasional item or two--like replacing the hose assembly for the radiator one time. I also am very good at listening when the car guys tell me that it is beyond my abilities and to just take it in. I will look this up in the repair database and see if I can find a schematic. Or I suppose I could wander over to the other side of the library and see if I can find a Chilton's manual for this year car. Thanks so much for your time!

What year is your car? TB= throttle body

THanks, throttle body indeed. My car is a 2000 Mercury Sable LS Premium; the engine is the 24 valve dohc, the bigger of the two engines for this car. I have had it since it was new, poor thing. It now has 201k+ and the engine still runs strong.

The cruise control cable could be broke or off the linkage itself. The module is on the drivers side inner strut tower.

They don't use contacts anymore, They use a clock spring.

Hey all, I found this thread while searching. The cruise on my 96 stopped working and I was wondering if this self test is the same for the 96. Can anyone helpa bruthu out?

i have a 2004 Taurus the cruise control does not work I have replaced the cruise servo, the CC buttons on both sides of the steering wheel all fuses are good I have tried that test and I get nothing I need help:angry:

97 And 02 Taurus - Cruise Control Not Working

  • Add to quote

Hi guys, I got a 97 and a 02 taurus who's cruise controls aren't working. Originally, the horn wasn't working for both cars either. But i found the blown fuses and replaced them. But I can't seem to find the fuse for the cruise controls. Does anybody have any idea where they are? The fuses that I located, based on the owner's manual, are all working. Can anybody help? Also if it is not the fuse, is there any other reason why the cruise would be not working? This seems like a common problem on the tauruses. Thanks Yiran

I would try to find out if the braklights are still working. There's a TSB about faulty brake light switches. Because if the switch fails, the cruise control doesn' work either.

The break lights are working the last time I checked. But i will check again. Are there any other possibilities?

jacknifetoaswan

I find it very odd that both cars don't work. Did you happen to run through a deep puddle and submerge parts of the wiring? JR

No i didn't drive these through a puddle. But I did buy both from auction. Everything on the cars work well except this stupid cruise control. By the way, do u guys know which fuse on the 97 and 02 taurus control the cruise control circuitry? Yiran

The wiring diagram in my Haynes manual says the cruise control is supplied by two fuses: fuse #6 15amp (marked BK LPS A/C) and fuse #28 15amp (marked STOP LAMPS). Both are located on the under dash fuse panel.

baby sho

colud be the Clock spring is bad....its the connecting device in the steering wheel column. Itmay have broke, and occasionally shorts, causing the hrn fuse to blow. or it May not be, because the horn in run through the cruide module, so you may want to check for bad/shorted connections ar the cruise module on the drivers strut tower. This would alos cause the problems you describe. Brad

cruise not working Go to this post to learn out how to put car into self diagnostic mode for cruise control. http://www.taurusclub.com/forum/82-maintenance-repair/132145-cruise-control.html I did this and got 3 red flashes. So it was the brake pedal deactivator switch. Be aware that there are 2 switches for brake: one with the plunger which is the cruise control deactivator switch and a microswitch attached directly to the brake pedal itself. The plunger stile deactivator switch will wear it's contact over time and need replaced. On my Taurus (2000 model year) the plunger switch was NOT adjustable (unless you consider bending the bracket an adjustment, and I do NOT suggest doing that.) The deactivator switch can be removed by first pushing the tab down on the top of the electrical connector, then pull the connector out. Next, rotate the switch counterclockwise 45 degreesand you should feel it come loose. This will allow the switch to be removed from the diagnal slotted hole. Also, you may want to consider cleaning the switches muonted to the steering wheel (on, off, set, coast, resume) Info is here: http://www.taurusclub.com/forum/82-maintenance-repair/167415-cruise-control-switches.html When poping switches out from face of steering sheel, put small screwdriver between edge of softer portion of steering wheel and the outer hard black plastic portion of switch. Switches easily pop out from wheel as an an assembly . You can then take the switches apart further and clean grime out.

Anyone use Domodedovo (DME) airport in Moscow

Coral

I am looking at booking my own air for my river cruise and have seats held using miles. The only problem is that AA (partner SwissAir specifically) can not get me out of Sheremetyevo SVO - they can only get me out of Domodedovo.

My flight is at 7:25 in the morning. Has anyone had transfers with Amadeus to Domodedovo or is it easy to arrange for a private taxi to Domodedovo.

My agent is out of town for a week. I may try calling Amadeus directly but if anyone has first hand knowledge - that would be great.

Theresa, as I just posted in your other thread, it can take literally HOURS to get from Domodedovo to where the river boats are docked. I just returned last night from my first riverboat cruise and heard horror stories of how it took four hours to get from Domodedovo. Just be prepared that it could take that long. The Moscow traffic is mind-bogglingly horrendous and their definition of "highway" is our definition of a local 4-lane road. The pier where they dock the riverboats is a distance on the outskirts of the city and there aren't many options or short cuts to get to it.

Also, make sure you pack some clothing in your carryon. Twelve people arriving in Domodedovo didn't have their luggage arrive for days and three never had it for the entire cruise. Out of 160 people, that's a pretty nasty percentage.

Pam - Welcome back!

Thank you for your insight. I fly into St. Petersburg and will leave out of Moscow so this probably will be better. I do have a 7:30 am flight which probably means that I will leave the ship at 4 am or so. It is my last day so I guess it is ok. Hopefully this means I won't lose my luggage going.....!

I am using FF miles and can not get to Sherman airport as none of AA's partners go there.

When you get rested and get back into the swing of things - I have a million questions for you. I know you did Viking and I will be on Amadeus so there are a few things different but we basically go to the same places.

I do not have any pre or post cruise hotels. Our trip is 12 days (14 with flying) and I don't want to be away for much longer. I did try to fly in the day before to St. Petersburg but FF miles would not let me. If they change my flights - I will try to fly in the day before.

I was in Russia for a week in 1988. Spent 3 days in Moscow and 3 days in Leningrad. So it will be interesting to see the changes since Communism. I was a Poli Sci/History Major in college and took a lot of Russian classes so I am pretty familiar with the history but definitely need a refresher!

I am so glad you enjoyed your experience. The fact that you decided to go there this year sort of gave me an incentive to look around and I came across the Amadeus trip that interested me.
