CRUISE CRAFT EXPLORER 625 HARDTOP

CRUISE CRAFT EXPLORER 625 HARDTOP REVIEW

With the success of the big Cruise Craft Explorer 685 Hardtop, the pressure has been on this Queensland-based fibreglass boat builder to produce more hardtop fishing boats and other variations. The latest Cruise Craft boat to transform into a hardtop is the Cruise Craft Explorer 625. What a difference a hardtop makes to the look and protection onboard.

CRUISE CRAFT BOATS

There are a number of key factors to consider in the design when it comes to hardtops, in particular maintaining the aesthetics to suit the boat. As well, the hardtop should be: of a top-quality build strength that is not too heavy to affect the ride; as aerodynamic as possible to reduce unnecessary resistance; insulated and have the correct ventilation; and, able to maintain clear visibility with minimal blind spots. It’s time consuming, costs a whack, but when you get a cracker end result it’s well worth it – and Cruise Craft have.

Cruise Craft fishing boats are popular throughout the country and are easily identifiable on the water. Instead of producing one style of hardtop, Cruise Craft boats has gone one step further and offers the option of a hardtop with glass sides and screen, or a hardtop with clears in place of the glass. This is a great idea as the hardtop with glass option won’t suit everybody, especially those from up north who experience high temperatures on the water. With clears you can open it up for ventilation, while still having a rigid structure above for protection and mounting of gear. For those not interested in hardtops, there are still the standard bimini options available as well.

The Cruise Craft 625HT test boat had the full-glass option and with winter in full swing and a rough day on the water it was most welcoming. Vision was good to the front and sides, there was no restriction on internal space, it has a solid build, looks awesome and felt warmer too. Besides looks, I like the fact that there is less movement than on a standard bimini, as well as it having areas where extra accessories can be mounted, such as compact stereos and speakers, as well as lighting and other gadgets. It’s a great design and works exceptionally well.

The balance of the layout on the Cruise Craft Explorer 625 is a combination of open space with plenty of fishing options. They include large livewells, fancy baitboards, big moulded sidepockets with inbuilt rod-racks, under-seat icebox options, removable carpets, rear seating, good storage, comfortable cabin and so much more to suit those big days offshore and family boating alike.

OUTBOARD ENGINE COMPARISON

In the past the larger Cruise Crafts were fitted with V6 four-stroke Yamaha outboard motors up to 300hp. The last year has seen some significant development on the motor side, Yamaha releasing the 200hp inline four-cylinder four-stroke outboard to start off with, and most recently the 175hp four-cylinder. These motors are already proving extremely popular – as well as weight advantages the performance is amazing, as is the economy for their sizes. The benefit? Where certain boats were only rated to 150hp due to weight, they now can run the 200hp Yamaha.

I had the chance to test the Cruise Craft 625 Explorer HT with both the latest Yamaha 175hp and the Yamaha 200hp four-stroke outboard engines – the 175 being based on the 200. To be honest it wasn’t an astronomical difference. A slight difference on the torque curve and a tiny bit less on the top end when you do proper speed trials might be noticeable. Overall the performance is exceptional considering the size of the engine, but if I had to choose I would probably still opt for the 200hp, just to have that little bit more.

The Yamaha 200hp outboard has more than enough guts to whack the Cruise Craft 625 onto the plane without effort. In comparison with the V6 motors the four-cyinder seems to have a unique power tone to it, a sort of crackle as it winds up the revs – and I quite like it. Combined with the 625’s hull shape, the motor runs sweet and on the plane at just under 3000rpm where fuel consumption is a modest 12.5 to 17lt/h depending on conditions. Gone are the days of emptying the wallet at the fuel bowser after each trip.

HANDLING AND RIDE

Ideal cruise speeds on the Cruise Craft 625 are between 3500 and 4500rpm, ranging between 18.8 and 24kts. Again fuel consumption is good considering the size of the boat and motor: 19.4lt/h at 18.8kts and 34lt/h at 27kts. Wide open throttle on the 200hp produces an impressive 39kts at 5800rpm, which is more than enough on the top end for me. Overall, it’s a very impressive boat-motor combination.

As per all Cruise Craft boats, the ride is consistent with above-average stability, comfort and handling throughout the rev range. In rough conditions I found the sweet spot to be anything between 18 to 25kts, which is good as it’s the most comfortable and economical speed to travel at on most boats of this size.

The ride is dry and with the assistance of trim-tabs you can fine tune the ride to suit the conditions. The bay was as rough as guts on test day, the boat flogged in all directions to the chop … and I didn’t go near the wiper switch to clean the screen – pretty good going I reckon. Basically sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

THE VERDICT

The Cruise Craft 625 Explorer Hardtop is a classic all-rounder and one that’s geared to suit the serious offshore fisherman, but which works just as well as a family boat. She’s a bit smaller than the Cruise Craft 685 but that makes it easier to tow and store, and it is still packed with heaps of features and space to keep everybody happy on the water. If a Cruise Craft 625 is still a bit big don’t fret, as Cruise Craft has just released the 595 Explorer Hardtop – and that is a head-spinner of note!  Watch this space.

• Protection from the elements on rough days

• Unrestricted vision through screen, plus wiper

• Space, fishability and finishes

• Personally, I prefer a bit more angle to the dash

2011 CruiseCraft Outsider 625

CruiseCraft Outsider 625

Cruise Craft 625 Explorer Gary Howard   |   First Published: June 2005

You’d think that 20-odd knots of south-easterly wind would be ideal to take the new 625 Cruise Craft Explorer through its paces. To some extent that’s true but with showers in addition to the wind, my commonsense safety sensor wasn’t exactly spelling ‘smart boating’. Nonetheless, we slipped the new rig into the water and worked our way over to the inside of a few smaller islands where we’d at least get some protection from the wind and the chance of a few pictures.

The conditions quickly had me appreciating the boat’s ability to stay on the plain at low revs. It’s not uncommon in rising seas to work up a bit of speed to keep on top of the water. The downside, though, is you get bounced around. And while slowing down might reduce the bumps, the boat can become bogged down in the conditions, making it difficult to drive because you’re constantly working the throttle. Furthermore, fuel consumption increases.

However, the 625 Explorer was able to maintain a reasonable speed through the chop, enabling us to sit right in the middle of the spectrum – not too rough and not struggling through the slop at slow speeds. The ride was much better once the boat was up on the plane and the engine was trimmed and backed off to find that comfort zone.

The other interesting thing I found while travelling in the wind was that there was little tendency for the boat to lean into the wind when it was abeam. Larger boats, especially those with high sides, trap the wind and lean into it and this is one reason we see many larger boats fitted with trim tabs.

While the 625 still had a little bit of a lean, it was nothing to be concerned about. I dare say once the boat is fully loaded with fuel and gear it will become even less noticeable. The shape of the hull has a lot to do with this. Cruise Craft have been able to maintain a relatively low-profile boat that still boasts a good ride with its 20° deadrise.

The below-waterline shape of the hull with its pronounced reversed chines and strakes creates a sufficient planing surface and subsequent lift to deliver the stability and ride required. When it comes time to stop and have a fish, you soon appreciate how well the boat sits in the water once you get a few anglers on one side. The boat sat nicely with no nasty lean threatening to throw the crew out each time someone moved too quickly.

The only down side of the hull shape is that it still throws up a bit of water when you cross the seas and the wind catches the spray, blowing it back onto you. When conditions are cool, it is important to make sure you’ve got full covers and front clear so you don’t get wet. Keep in mind, though, that it was rather windy during the boat test.

The 150hp engine fitted to the test boat was more than enough to get the boat up and under way. We didn’t have a chance to put the hammer down because of the conditions but they tell me it will reach just over 40mph (64kmh) on a good day, trimmed out.

With all the talk of four-strokes and fuel-injected two-strokes, there’s still room for the good old conventional two-strokes. And while they use a bit more fuel and can be fumy, they do keep the overall price of the package down.

It was good to see an offshore boat that comes fitted standard with a decent-sized fuel tank and the 240L model below decks should be plenty for a big day out on the water.

What you will find striking about the new 625 Explorer is the layout, which optimises the space around the boat to make it very roomy indeed.

New interior mouldings have helped in this regard. The beauty of fibreglass mouldings is that you can pretty well create whatever layout you want and retain nice rounded edges and curved lines that are user-friendly and appealing to the eye.

The first thing that really stood out to me was all that room in the aft cockpit. It’s been designed to provide anglers with plenty of space.

Starting from the transom, a two person bench seat tucks back neatly into the inside of the transom so it’s completely out of the way when not needed. The backrest for the bench seat is the padded coaming so you can lean your thighs against it while fishing. It doesn’t run the full width of the transom because it’s only a two-seater.

The area to port of the seat has been left for the transom door, which allows you to get in and out of the boat easily. Below the entry, a locker houses your second battery or oil bottle, mostly behind the seat. A large single live bait well is positioned on the starboard side next to the bait board and rigging area.

There have been quite a few changes to the sides of the deck. The lined moulding maintains an area under the side pocket to allow your feet under while fishing. It’s a big help when it comes to keeping your balance. The side pockets also run right from the transom to the helm so there’s plenty of length to put rods, gaffs and tag poles.

There’s certainly attention to detail in this boat, such as the integrated area for the side-fill fuel lines. There’s no mess of hoses, fillers and zippy ties to catch on things.

One of the new additions to the Cruise Craft range is the foam-filled hulls which, aside from the safety aspect, offer a quieter ride. In this model there is a large underfloor storage area that’s also a fish box. It’s certainly big enough to take a few good size fish. The foam-filled floor will be a good insulator and although the lid doesn’t have insulation, the space is ideal as a day icebox.

Continuing the theme of maximising deck space, the helm seats are mounted on stainless steel rails that run from the side of the cabin down to the floor. Unlike pedestal mounts and box-mounted helm seats, the space below can be used to store your eskies and tackle boxes. It’s a big area so there’s plenty of room to slip in a good box that can be held in place with stretchy straps.

The helm area is neat and tidy with the potential to flush-mount electronics in front of the wheel or to one side of the dash. There are got pockets to the side, a drink holder and a home for the EPIRB.

The cabin is a good place to take a bit of a nap and to stow gear rather than a place to comfortably spend a few nights. While it is not large, you can still manage to sleep two, with additional storage in the side pockets above the bunks and general storage under the cushions.

The walk-through hatch in the upper cabin features a step in the middle of the bunks that makes getting in and out and anchoring a bit easier. The overall finish of the new internal mouldings is very well done and you can’t help admiring it, especially given the huge cockpit for anglers.

The 625 Explorer follows the Cruise Craft tradition of always striving to achieve excellence in design and performance.

Hi all I'm trying to compare these boats, around 2005 models. The 575 Outsider has a Black Suzi 140 The 625 Outsider has a White Suzi 200 If anyone can help with cabin/bunk sizes, deck layout, weight, good/bad handling habits? Thanks

They are outsiders wags. Thanks

The boating section would probably get a bit more response, but, I would make sure I checked out a 2005 Suzuki 140 properly.

If I was getting one, my pick would be the 625. Bunk sizes are very similar. The 575 would be slightly softer into a head sea but the 625 would definitely be better in a following sea. The 575 would have better economy fuel wise but the 625 wouldn't be too far behind and also have more cockpit space for fishing. My 2 bobs worth. Duck

Not sure about comparison but you'll be happy either way, love my 625

Hi Dantren, You will find a few relevant threads within the last month or two in the Boating section, otherwise the Search function is your friend A few other suggestions: Does the 625 have Tabs? These will be a 100% necessity with this combo (V6), so allow in the budget. 12 x 9 if plate tabs. What is the ATM on the 625 trailer, is it on a gal trailer and does it have a breakaway breaking system on the trailer? If a gal trailer, and you want to be 'legal' (read insurance), an ATM of 2000kg will not be sufficient. Back in 2005 some dealers possibly still did not stringently follow the law, or were possibly swayed too easily and sold them on 2000kg trailers. Cheers Brendon Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

apparently the 625 Outsider cant handle a V6 4 stroke, and it ruins the boat according to people who owned them. Cruisecraft dont even recommend a v6 4 stroke. There are heaps of other 21 foot boats that can float a V6 4 stroke though. Even some 19 footers....

Dantren, my last boat was a 625 CC outsider and I loved it. It had a 200 Verado which was an awesome engine (I thought anyway) and I dont know why Cruise Craft would not reccommend the V6 (maybe listing??) but the Verado cracked my transom out and Cruise Craft could not do enough to help. They said they would have fixed it even if it was out of warranty, they repaired it and done a perfect job. It would have benifited from trim tabs but I never felt I had to put them on. Things to check would be the cracking arond the stainless targa (had to get mine rewelded), and in '05 they changed from 5-7 year hull warranty, the 7 year warranty had a foam filled hull, and try to get the larger 240l fuel tank. I used to fish in my father in laws 575 explorer and definatly enjoyed the extra room of mine. Mine weighed 2.42t no fuel Bunks were big enough for two blokes (need to be good friends!) Deck lay out was great after I replaced pedestal seats to rail type to hold eskies Great bait boards, I know its not a biggy but you appriciate it if you go back to a crap one Look for on with cabin curtain
