Cruises from San Diego to Mexico

Four cruise lines offer cruises from San Diego to the beaches of sunny Mexico. See the full schedule of departures out of SD below.

Cabo San Lucas is a city at the southern point of the Baja California peninsula. It has a tropical desert climate, with warm temperatures throughout the year. Kayak to El Arco rock, sip margaritas in a cantina, go sportfishing, and go scuba diving or snorkeling with the marine life.

At Mazatlan you can see cliff divers, explore the old city, or relax on the beach. Excursions include golf, jet boats, and shrimp feasts.

A stop at the port of Puerto Vallarta brings you to Banderas Bay and the Sierra Madre. Explore the streets, shops and markets of the old town. Hit the beach or take an adventure to the jungles of the mountains.

Ensenada is at the top of Baja, very close to California. It's the destination of short cruises to Mexico.

Cabo Cruises – Cabo San Lucas Getaway

Beaches by day and celebrations by night on cruises to cabo.

Say hello to sunny beaches and adventure-filled exploration on a Cabo cruise with Princess®. Dive below the water’s surface to see colorful marine life, or zipline through the canyons to take in the views from above. During an overnight stay in Cabo, shop for artisan crafts by day, then dine beachside by night. With convenient roundtrip travel from Los Angeles, relaxation and adventure is never too far away.

Cruise to Cabo San Lucas port

Located at the tip of the Baja Peninsula, Cabo is surrounded by clear waters, sun-kissed beaches and the majestic rock formation, El Arco. While it’s one of the city’s most iconic landmarks, El Arco is also a haven for sea lions. On a Cabo cruise, sail by catamaran under the famous arch to see these wildlife, and enjoy an afternoon relaxing on the secluded shores of Lover’s Beach.

What to Do on a Cruise to Cabo

On a Cabo cruise with Princess, bring your wildest vacation dreams to life.

Medano Beach

Deep sea fishing, san jose del cabo.

No cruise to Cabo is complete without a trip to El Arco. Separating the Pacific Ocean from the Sea of Cortez, this landmark is more than just a rock formation, it’s an emblem of the Baja Peninsula. Travel past El Arco on board a catamaran and look for the sea lions that play nearby. Then make your way to Lover’s Beach and relish in relaxation as you unwind shoreside.

As one of the most popular beaches in Cabo, Medano Beach is an adventurer’s playground. Relax on the golden shores, kayak with loved ones or set out on a parasailing expedition, where you can enjoy views of the shore from above. With plenty of restaurants and shops nearby, Medano Beach is the perfect outing for the entire family during your Cabo cruise.

Reel in endless treasures and memories during your Mexico cruise to Cabo. From marlin and swordfish to tuna and grouper, these waters are home to a wide variety of marine life, making it one of the finest sportfishing destinations in the world. With a local fisherman as your guide, embark on a deep-sea exploration and cast your rod into adventure.

Teeming with charm and character, San Jose del Cabo invites you to step back in time as you tour its colorful streets. With preserved 18th-century architecture, the city still holds true to its Spanish colonial personality. On a Mexico cruise to Cabo, enjoy a scenic car ride from the port to this historical town. Wander along La Plaza, stroll through art galleries and visit the San Jose del Cabo Church.

Cabo excursions

Our shore excursions redefine cruise vacations. Board a pirate ship and sail along the coast to learn about the Riviera’s rich history. Snorkel through the turquoise waters alongside your guide, who can bring you up close to coral reefs and colorful marine life. Or horseback ride along the sun-kissed shores while admiring the beauty and wildlife around you. See the city by land and sea on a cruise to Cabo with Princess.

More ashore

Enjoy every second in Cabo with More Ashore overnight stays. On our 5-day Cabo San Lucas cruise getaways, enjoy two full days in Mexico’s resort city. Sip on a cocktail while watching the sun set over the ocean. Dance the night away in one of the bustling bars. Or taste Mexican street-food — including smoked fish, tacos and chicken tamales — at any of the city’s restaurants.

Ships on this itinerary

Our Princess fleet includes ships that offer a multitude of amenities and feature the innovative MedallionClass™ experience. From a balcony stateroom, take in the sights and sounds of the colorful cultures ashore before enjoying the “sabor” of local cuisine in one of our many eateries during your Cabo San Lucas cruise.

#PrincessCruises Mexico Connections

See Mexico through our guests' eyes.

Mexico Cruises Onboard Experience

Experience the country’s unique character the second you step on the ship with traditional Mexican cuisine, events and activities.

Mariachi and margaritas

Sip, savor and sway to the music with onboard activities that give you a taste of Mexican tradition. Sample tequila while learning about the drink’s history from a local expert, and indulge your taste buds with tacos and fajitas. Or let loose with your loved ones during a mariachi performance, and dance to the lively tune of violins and guitars. On a cruise to Mexico with Princess, activities lie around every corner.

Every reason to celebrate

On select sailings in October and November, discover the region’s heritage with our Mexican Fiesta. Celebrate the Day of the Dead, a holiday to commemorate loved ones who have passed. From face-painting to Aztec flower-making, there are activities for the whole family on a cruise to Mexico. Learn a traditional dance, decorate marzipan skulls and make a skeleton out of pasta. Or watch dancers perform ‘The Procession of the Dead.’

Mexican and Spanish Cuisine

Famous for a reason

Recognized by UNESCO for its cultural heritage and preservation of culinary technique, Mexican and Spanish cuisine is a big part of the region’s culture. Sample the bold flavors and creative combinations for yourself on a cruise to Mexico with Princess. In many of our dining rooms, enjoy Mexican-themed dishes — like ceviche, fajitas and coconut cocadas — for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Luxury Cruises to the Mexican Riviera

Mountains and desert meet the aquamarine surf of the Pacific on the Mexican Riviera, a playground of glamorous resort towns, golden beaches, enchanting Spanish colonial architecture, and jaw-dropping sunsets.

All your senses will be captivated on a luxury cruise to the Mexican Riviera with Celebrity. Taste local wines in Ensenada. Feel the sea breeze on your face as you sail around the rocky coastline of Cabo San Lucas on the lookout for sea lions. Explore the galleries and boho-chic shops of Olas Altas, Puerto Vallarta. Stroll the malecón waterfront in chic Mazatlán. You’ll absorb Mexico’s colorful culture in the street food, tequila, music, and craft markets everywhere you go.

Mexican Riviera Cruise Highlights

Glorious coastal scenery.

Whether you prefer long stretches of golden sand lined with chic restaurants and bars, or wild, wave-pounded rocks, you’ll find your dream on the Mexican Riviera. People-watch in the fashionable Golden Zone in Mazatlán. Take a day boat to the dramatic El Arco rock arch near Cabo San Lucas. Marvel at the ocean’s power at La Bufadora, Ensenada’s famous rock blowhole. Soak up the Hollywood glamor of Playa de los Muertos in Puerto Vallarta.

Art & Architecture

You’ll find colorful colonial architecture in many of the towns along the Mexican Riviera. Mazatlán’s Old Town is a maze of flower-filled plazas and delightful 19th-century buildings, many now serving as restaurants and galleries. In Puerto Vallarta, admire the Zona Romantica and the church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, its steeple topped with a filigree crown. Head to pretty Todos Santos, a day trip from Cabo San Lucas, to wander cobblestone streets and browse galleries.

Creative Cuisine

Mexico’s vibrant cuisine brings ever-new discoveries as you sail the Mexican Riviera. There are more than 50 wineries in the Guadalupe Valley near Ensenada, so this is the place to head for tastings. In Puerto Vallarta, don’t miss pescado embarazado, fresh fish grilled with lime on a stick over charcoal, served with tangy salsa. Cabo San Lucas is packed with fine restaurants, but you can’t beat the farm-to-table cuisine here—all washed down with an ice-cold margarita.

Mexican Riviera Cruise Itineraries

Cruises with Celebrity to the Mexican Riviera last from five to 16 nights. Most are seven or eight-night voyages sailing round-trip from Los Angeles, visiting different combinations of Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, and Ensenada. You could also explore more northerly ports along the West Coast on a cruise that calls at Ensenada as well as San Francisco and Monterey. Or opt for a Panama Canal voyage between San Diego and San Juan, Puerto Rico, stopping at Puerto Vallarta as well as the Caribbean islands of Aruba and Curaçao. Finally, a long voyage between Valparaiso, Chile, and Los Angeles will bring you to exciting ports in Peru and Costa Rica as well as Cabo San Lucas.

Itineraries

Why cruise to the mexican riviera with celebrity cruises.

Soak up the sunshine of the Mexican Riviera on one of our luxury cruise ships. Lounge by the shimmering pool, or sample the cocktail menu in the gorgeous Sunset Bar, overlooking the ship’s wake. On Solstice-series ships, bask on the grass of the Lawn Club on the upper deck, and cool off with delicious gelato from Café al Bacio. Elevate your experience in The Retreat, offering all-suite accommodation, an elegant private lounge, and dining at the exclusive Luminae at The Retreat.

Whether you want to snorkel the coral reefs around Cabo San Lucas, spot breaching whales, shop for arts and crafts in Puerto Vallarta, or head to a waterfront bar to luxuriate in those glorious Pacific sunsets, this is the ultimate destination for sunshine, culture, cuisine, and a carefree vacation.

Eclipse cruises set sail from Port of San Diego

The cruise season in San Diego is wrapping up and it’s ending with a stellar experience for passengers.

Two Holland America ships left the port of San Diego this week and are headed for Mexico to be in the solar eclipse path of totality on Monday.

Passengers are eager to board one of two eclipse cruises leaving San Diego

“I just think the idea of seeing the eclipse. I don’t know if we’ve ever seen a total eclipse in our area,” said Gary Lusk.

He and his wife Lis, traveled from Seattle to San Diego to board the ship and view their first total solar eclipse with 2,436 other passengers aboard the Koningsdam.

During the 22-day cruise, the ship will position itself in Mexico to be the first to view the eclipse in totality and then head to Hawaii and up to Vancouver.

“It’s really kind of eerie to see stars. You know, did you know stars were up there all the time?” said Lusk.

Physicist Albert Einstein was able to prove the theory of general relativity from the solar eclipse in 1919.

“Because when the sun was eclipsed, you could actually see the stars that were usually behind the sun, but we just can’t see it because of the glare. But that starlight is actually bent slightly by gravity,” said Adam Burgasser, PhD, UCSD professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics.

He and his family will be on board with his family to take in this unique experience but Burgasser will also be holding lectures and creating eclipse viewers for passengers.

“I’ve been getting emails over the last few months of folks who are bringing their own telescopes, who are excited to be witnesses, some of them actually have been on multiple eclipse tours,” said Burgasser.

He says Monday’s eclipse give scientists more insight into the elusive solar corona.

“Right now, we’re actually at the peak of the suns activity, it’s actually come a little earlier than we expected. So there may be some clues as to why the sun is so active right now, when we look at that corona,” said Burgasser.

Earlier this week, Holland America’s Zaandam set sail from San Diego for a 14-day eclipse viewing cruise in Mexico.

“WNEP’s meteorologist and NASA-partner eclipse ambassador Jeremy Lewan, from our sister station in northeast Pennsylvania is aboard the Zahndam with Rick Fienberg, PhD, from the American Astronomical Society .

“On April 8th of this year we are going to be very close to the maximum solar activity,” said Feinberg.

This once in a life-time experience has the Lusk’s thanking their lucky stars.

“Our family is jealous,” said Lusk.

The cost for the all-inclusive cruise on the Koningsdam started around $1,300, that doesn’t include port taxes and fees.

The Port of San Diego says each ship beginning and ending has a $2 million local impact.

“And that's people eating at restaurants, shopping, taking local transportation, staying at hotels, so it's supporting jobs, as well as seaside jobs,” said Adam Deaton, Port of San Diego Principal Cruise Business.

Remember not to stare at the sun with the naked eye and wear solar eclipse glasses, use a view box or watch a live stream.

The partial eclipse will be viewable in San Diego starting at 10:03am, peaking at 11:11 a.m. and end at 12:23 p.m.

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

cruises to mexico out of san diego

Cheers broke out on Holland America Line’s Koningsdam ship when the total solar eclipse began on Monday.

Off the coast of Mazatlan, Mexico, passengers were perched on loungers, reclining on beach towels and lining the railings of Deck 14 with cameras on tripods at the ready. When the sliver of fiery orange that remained of the sun disappeared, a black circle ringed by white light took its place. Passengers applauded the moment they'd been awaiting since the ship departed from San Diego on Friday.

The sunny, 72-degree weather – quintessential cruise weather – gave way to chilly wind and late morning’s best impression of sunset. The horizon line glowed orange in the dusky sky.

Cruise ships can help take guests to the path of totality for eclipses, allowing passengers to get a prime viewing spot and make a vacation of it.

What is a total solar eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely blocks the face of the sun as it moves between the sun and Earth.

While the sun is about 400 times bigger than the moon, the moon is roughly 400 times closer to Earth. “In the past, the moon was much closer, and in the future, the moon will be much further away,” said Adam Burgasser, a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, San Diego, and director of the Cool Star Lab, who served as an onboard expert during the cruise. “And so we're in a special time, which, of course, lasts for billions of years, where it's set up just right to block out the sun.”

Total solar eclipses take place about every 18 months on average, but the last one visible from the U.S. was in 2017 .

The phenomenon creates a multi-sensory experience, with a cold front moving in ahead of the eclipse. “You block the sun, and it gets cold,” said Burgasser. “It’s actually just that simple. And it's slow enough that the atmosphere can react.”

Plants and animals respond, too: Birds often begin to chirp, plants may close up, and nocturnal will come out. “It’s kind of an all-around-you experience where it's not just the fact that the sun has been blocked that’s so fascinating, but just the effect it has on the entire environment.” Those effects weren’t easily discernible on Koningsdam, though, which was about 150 miles from shore.

Nicole Chaput, a 57-year-old passenger from Calgary in Canada, said partial and total eclipses are “totally different.”

“I heard someone describe it as being partly pregnant,” she said. “You can’t do it. There’s no comparison.”

What makes a cruise a good place to see an eclipse?

Bad weather can wreck even the best-laid viewing plans. If a city in the path of totality has overcast skies, it can be tough to quickly move to an alternate site.

“If you're on a cruise ship and a little bit farther to the east or a little bit farther to the west along the path, there's clear sky, the ship can move,” said Dan Jarrell, who was on the cruise with his wife, Kay, and friends. The Washington, D.C.-area resident has seen solar eclipses with friends during two other sailings, including on Holland America’s Veendam in 1998.

“If you're on land and there's not a road there, you’d better have a tank,” Jarrell said.

That’s where a cruise ship comes in handy. “Having the ability to map out based on what the current weather is where you can catch the eclipse, and having a range over the course of the ocean where you could chase that a little bit is certainly helpful,” Burgasser added.

Capt. Ane Smit, Master aboard Holland America’s Zaandam for the viewing, said the ship can move at a maximum of 20 knots, so the crew needs to scout out the conditions with enough time to move as needed.

“If it's not good enough, we really need to start finding another spot because we are not the quickest vehicle, of course, to be driving around, but we have the luxury of being able to go in any direction without any restriction,” he said. “It’s a pretty wide highway that we have.”

The view of the horizon also allows passengers to “see that shadow coming in and leaving more so than you can in a topographical area,” said Burgasser. Being in the ocean away from city lights is also helpful for seeing stars and other parts of the sky usually only visible at night.

The cruise line also made the practicalities of watching an eclipse easier: eclipse glasses were distributed to guests’ staterooms and Burgasser guided guests through the event via the ship’s speaker system, before and after totality.

More eclipse cruises on the horizon

If you missed your chance to see it this time or want another go, Holland America has more eclipse-viewing opportunities on the books.

“Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's Vice President of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, said in an email. Details have not yet been released.

Other cruise lines offer similar opportunities as well. Princess Cruises' Emerald Princess was near Koningsdam on Monday.

Chaput, the Canadian passenger, said she’s been “chasing” total solar eclipses since seeing her first one in 1991. Monday’s eclipse marked her seventh viewing and second on a cruise ship.

“I think it’s just such an amazing natural phenomenon,” she said. “It’s seeing science in action.”

Cruise passengers depart San Diego for solar eclipse journey

cruises to mexico out of san diego

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than 2,400 passengers set sail aboard a Holland America cruise ship from San Diego on Friday, embarking on a journey to witness Monday's solar eclipse in its "path of totality."

“The eclipse is just a huge bonus,” said Mary Schimanke. She and her husband Hans traveled from Canada for the unique cruising experience.

“Even if it’s only 5 minutes or so it’s very exciting … I think everybody is going to be out on deck,” said Schimanke.

On board, UC San Diego Astronomy and Astrophysics professor Adam Burgasser will offer special lectures.

“So we’re going to be catching it right at the start of the totality path,” said Burgasser, who will be helping passengers experience the eclipse safely.

“These glasses protect the eyes. They block out everything,” he said.

The 22-day cruise commences in San Diego, then sails to Mexico, where passengers will witness the eclipse off the coast, followed by stops in Hawaii before concluding in Vancouver.

"It’s a special thing to have the Koningsdam here in San Diego to mark this solar eclipse,” said Adam Deaton, Principal of Cruise Business at the Port of San Diego.

Deaton said it’s an epic experience for guests and a boost for San Diego businesses.

“Every time a cruise line such as Holland America starts or ends a cruise in San Diego, that’s two million dollars injected into the local economy,” he said.

For those remaining in San Diego, a partial solar eclipse will be visible on Monday, peaking around 11:11 a.m.

The Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park is offering proper protective eyewear and hosting a viewing party on Monday.

See the full list of past total solar eclipses in the U.S. since 1778

By Kerry Breen

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 4:36 AM EDT / CBS News

A  rare total solar eclipse was visible in parts of the United States Monday. Those in the path of totality  had the opportunity to see the sun be fully covered by the moon for several minutes.

Total solar eclipses are rare , and aren't often visible from the U.S. The last time one occurred here  was in 2017 , and the U.S. won't see another until 2044 .

Here's a list of all the times a total solar eclipse has been recorded in the United States.

Total solar eclipse in the U.S. during the 18th century

The first recorded total solar eclipse was in 1778, according to NASA , just a few short years after the United States became an independent country. The eclipse was visible from the Carolinas to New England, and was noted by historical figures like Thomas Jefferson, according to Mount Vernon , the museum established in former President George Washington's estate. Troops in Washington's army also noted the event.

A total eclipse of the sun

List of total solar eclipses in the U.S. during the 19th century

1806: The first total solar eclipse of the 1800s occurred in 1806, according to the National Parks Service . The path of that eclipse would have crossed from Arizona, through the Midwest and into New England, according to NASA .

1869: The next total solar eclipse was recorded in 1869. The path of totality stretched from Alaska to the Carolinas, according to NASA . Photos of the event were published in Harper's Magazine, the service said, the first mass publication to do so.

1878: The next total solar eclipse occurred in 1878, and the path of totality arced from Alaska through Louisiana, according to NASA . It was studied by an all-woman team of astronomers, according to the parks service, and Thomas Edison himself traveled to see the event, bringing scientific equipment to study the sun's corona during the eclipse.

List of total solar eclipses in the U.S. during the 20th century

1900: The first eclipse of the 20th century was in 1900, according to the parks service. The path of totality of that eclipse brought it over Wadesboro, North Carolina.

1918: In June 1918, a total solar eclipse was visible from Washington to Florida, according to the parks service. It was the last time a total solar eclipse would be visible across the entire continent for nearly 100 years.

1925: This was followed by another total solar eclipse in January 1925, which was visible from Minnesota through New England, according to NASA .

1932: In August 1932, another total solar eclipse was visible in North America. The path of totality for this eclipse was mostly in Canada, according to NASA , but was visible in northern New England including parts of Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

1963: The next total solar eclipse in the U.S. wasn't until July 1963. This eclipse was visible in Alaska and parts of northern New England, according to NASA .

1970: In March 1970, another total solar eclipse was visible from the coast of the Southwest United States. Watch CBS News coverage of that event in the video below:

1979: The last eclipse that NASA recorded in the 20th century took place in 1979. This eclipse was visible in the Pacific Northwest and parts of Idaho and the Dakotas, but the path of totality mostly arced through Canada.

Total solar eclipses in the U.S. during the 21st century so far

Only two total solar eclipses have been visible from the United States during the 21st century. The first was the total solar eclipse of 2017 , which was visible across the country . This was the first time such an event had occurred since 1918, and millions gathered to watch .

The April 8, 2024, eclipse was the next total solar eclipse visible in the U.S. The path of totality for this eclipse stretched from Texas to the Northeast. The eclipse started  on Mexico's Pacific coast at just after 11 a.m. PDT before traveling across the U.S. and into Canada. The eclipse left North America around 5:19 p.m. EDT.

Eclipse map of totality

The eclipse attracted millions of spectators. Some areas where the event was most visible declared local states of emergency to account for the number of expected visitors.

When will the next total solar eclipse be visible in the U.S.?

After the April 8 eclipse, the U.S. won't see another total solar eclipse for decades. The next total solar eclipse visible from the United States will occur in August 2044.

Total solar eclipses typically happen every one to three years somewhere around the globe, but the events are often only visible from Earth's poles or from the middle of the ocean.
