Heading to the Alps this year? Chris Townsend reviews an ice axe suitable for all levels of general mountaineering

This review is part of our ice axes gear guide , and was first published in the February 2018 issue of The Great Outdoors.

The Italian-made Alpin Tour is described as ‘a robust general walking axe’ and it’s certainly that. However it is T rated and so is also suitable for classic mountaineering routes, especially as it has a well-curved pick, a wide adze for step-cutting, and a curved shaft. There’s no rubberised grip on the lower shaft but there is a padded wrist support on the adjustable leash. You can get the biggest mitt into the wrist loop too. The Alpin Tour has a hexagonal shaft that is slightly easier to grip with cold and wet hands or gloves than an oval one.

The weight is light for a T-rated axe. The Petzl Summit Evo weighs even less but costs considerably more. More effort is needed when using the pick or adze than with a heavier axe but the Alpin Tour isn’t so light using them becomes tiring.

Cepín Climbing Technology Alpin Tour+ je klasický cepín, nástupca cepínu Alpin Tour G s vylepšeným držadlom. Je určený na ľadovcovú turistiku, klasický alpinizmus, lezenie žľabov a ľadov. Má mierne tvarovanú rukoväť, ktorá zvyšuje jeho pevnosť, profilovanie uľahčuje použitie na stredne strmých svahoch. Je vyrobený z eloxovanej ľahkej zliatiny, preto je veľmi ľahký, hlava je z pevnej tvrdenej ocele. Pogumovaná rukoväť je ukončená hrotom – hrot aj hlava cepínu sú vybavené dierami. Je dodávaný s pútkom Drag-Tour. Cepín Alpin Tour+ veľmi dobre padne do ruky.

With Pre-Order , you can purchase the latest items added to our store in advance of them arriving with us.

Your Pre-Order is prioritised (at no additional charge); meaning that as soon as the product arrives with us, we can wrap it straight back up; ready for collection via Click & Collect or despatch to you — it often never even hits the stock room shelves!

With Pre-Launch , the date when we expect to receive the product ourselves is still a little too hazy to be confident in accepting Pre-Orders.

So, instead, you can submit your email address against the item you are interested in and we will email you as soon as stock arrives on the system.

Estimated Delivery & Collection Dates are given on Pre-Order and Pre-Launch products. They are for indication purposes only and can change at any time without notice.

The dates we provide are based on indications given by our suppliers. Whenever we get updated information from our suppliers we will endeavour to update the Estimated Delivery & Collection Dates provided on product pages.

Online Returns Information:

• In the event that your purchase is not suitable, for whatever reason, you have the right to return it to us.
• Goods should be returned in new condition, unused, and with their original undamaged packaging.
• We aim to process all returns within 72 hours. This may take slightly longer at busy times of the year. We will e-mail you once your return has been processed.
• Any items returned will be refunded unless faulty or shipped in error.
• If you wish to exchange an item for any reason, please place a new order for the items that you want.
• Please note that it is your responsibility to pay for the return postage costs, no postage costs are refundable.
• Goods may be returned for a refund within 30 days of receipt.
• You do not need to contact us to notify us of your return unless the item is faulty or is outside of our 30-day policy.

• Climbing & PPE Safety Equipment can only be returned on very strict conditions. Everything must be exactly as it was received, with packaging and labelling intact. If there is any sign or possibility that the goods have been used or contaminated then we regret that we are unable to accept a return on the grounds of consumer safety.
• In the unlikely event that your purchase develops a fault, for whatever reason, then please contact us first either by telephone or email for further instructions. In the majority of cases, any faulty goods will have to be returned to us and then forwarded on to their respective suppliers for inspection. Please be aware that this process may take several weeks in some cases. Any postage costs paid will be refunded by THE CLIMBERS SHOP if a product is deemed as faulty and still under a manufacturer's warranty.
• If you purchased in-store and need to return an item by post please contact the relevant shop directly before sending.

Ice Axes - Mountaineering - Climbing Technology Alpin Tour Pro Axe

is a superb all round mountaineering axe, with a host of features normally reserved for much more expensive axes.  It has a curved profile making it ergonomic to handle and plunge into deep snow, it has a rubberised handle for bashing up gullies or cutting steps, it also aggressive point angled for better pruchase on steep ground and it has a T rated superstrong alloy shaft.  The Steel pick head is complemented with a plastic insert which improves comfort and there is also a fully featured adjustable leash too.
