With miles upon scenic miles of white sand beaches, beckoning Old World architecture and majestic mountain ranges, Cuba is quickly becoming a popular vacation destination, and one of the best ways to explore this vibrant Caribbean island is with a Cuba cruise.

Very little has changed in Cuba in comparison to neighboring Caribbean islands, due in large part to an economic embargo that has lasted for more than half a century. As a result, passengers disembarking from a Cuba cruise will notice that some of the major cities, such as Havana, appear to be stuck in a time warp: the colonial architecture, though visually stunning, are in need of repair, while antique Fords, Buicks and Pontiacs are easily spotted cruising the streets in clouds of smoke. However, these storied surroundings are what make Cuba such a fascinating place to visit.

On a Cuba cruise vacation, passengers have the opportunity to venture out to far-reaching islands and to explore a few cities in the span of several days. Nearly all cruises to Cuba incorporate a port of call in Havana, Cuba’s capital. In this captivating city, passengers can stroll through the cobblestone streets of Old Havana and admire its colonial buildings, tour a fully operational cigar factory, or enjoy an evening out at one of the city's many live music venues. What should I pack for a cruise to Mexico?

When packing for a cruise to Mexico, you’ll need clothing for a tropical climate. Bring plenty of beachwear, a sun hat, sunglasses, coverups, water shoes if you’re visiting coral sand beaches, and reef-friendly sunblock if you intend to go snorkeling.

If you book a snorkeling excursion, all gear will be provided. If there are places where you may want to snorkel independently, consider bringing your own equipment. 

Throughout the ship, casual resort wear, sundresses, shorts, polos, or button-downs are appropriate, paired with sandals, low heels, and loafers. In main and specialty dining, we ask guests to refrain from wearing swimsuits, see-through cover-ups or robes, bare feet, tank tops, T-shirts, and baseball caps. 

Smart Casual attire is required for entry to main dining, specialty dining, and the Celebrity Theatre. Smart Casual means you look comfortable yet tasteful in a dress, skirt, long pants, or jeans with a stylish top or button-down. Shorts and flip-flops are not considered Smart Casual.

Each itinerary features one to two more “formal” nights that we call Evening Chic. Evening Chic means you dress to impress, glamorous and sophisticated in your own way, with a cocktail dress, skirt, slacks, or designer jeans, an elegant dress top, or blazer—some guests even pack a tuxedo or gown for onboard photos. 

The daily program, delivered to your stateroom and available at the Guest Relations Desk, will be your guide to the correct attire each evening. If you do not wish to participate in Evening Chic, Smart Casual attire is acceptable for dining and attending the theater.

Do I need a passport?

It is the responsibility of each guest to identify and obtain all required travel documents and have them available at the pier when necessary. Before leaving home, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the required travel documents you will be asked to provide prior to boarding the ship. You’ll find more information here.

Not all Mexico cruises require a passport. If you are an American citizen traveling from the U.S. to Mexico on a closed-loop cruise, starting and ending at the same U.S. port, a state-issued ID and an original U.S. birth certificate are sufficient. 

If you are on a cruise that’s not a closed-loop, you will need one of the following documents: U.S. passport book, passport card, Trusted Traveler card (Nexus, SENTRI, or FAST), or an enhanced driver’s license.

When’s the best time to cruise?

The peak cruise season on Mexico’s Caribbean coast is from December to April, when the days are warm and sunny, with little rain other than the occasional short, sharp evening shower. You can also cruise to Mexico’s Caribbean coast in the shoulder season, from July to November; there may be a little more rain, but hurricanes are rare here. Your safety is our priority and ships can be moved if a hurricane is forecast.

Winter is peak season to cruise to Mexico’s Pacific coast. Hurricanes can pass through between May and November, so you could expect some rain then.

What ports do you visit in Mexico?

Celebrity’s ships call at Costa Maya and Cozumel on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. On the Pacific coast, we visit Huatulco, Puerto Vallarta, Ensenada, Mazatlán, and Cabo San Lucas.

Where do Mexico cruises depart from?

Cruises to Mexico depart from Fort Lauderdale, Miami, Tampa, Los Angeles, and Orlando (Port Canaveral). We offer a wide range of cruises to Mexico, from four-night getaways to longer voyages that combine the best Mexican ports with destinations ranging from Key West to New Orleans, Jamaica, and the Panama Canal.

Is it safe to cruise to Mexico?

As with any busy vacation destination, take sensible precautions. Don’t carry your cell phone or wallet in your back pocket, and keep your purse and camera close to you. Do not leave your belongings unattended on a beach. Do not drink tap water in Mexico—drink bottled water instead.

Are there any specific vaccinations or health requirements?

There are no specific vaccinations required to enter Mexico, but you should always make sure your regular vaccinations are up to date before traveling.

What can I do on board the ship?

You’ll find no shortage of things to do on board your luxurious Celebrity Cruises ship. Sunbathe by the pool, relax in a bubbling hot tub, or indulge in a treatment in the spa. Another city passengers often visit during their Cuba cruise is Santiago de Cuba, the second largest city in Cuba after Havana. Here, passengers can tour historic rum distilleries, explore the UNESCO-recognized Baconao Biosphere Reserve, or simply bask on the shores of one of the many beautiful beaches. Cienfuegos is another port of call made by some cruise lines, and in this charming waterfront city, passengers can take an excursion to the stunning El Nicho Waterfall, stroll through the swanky Punta Gorda neighborhood to take in the beautiful neoclassical buildings, or spend some time in the turquoise waters snorkeling, sailing or swimming.

Most cruises to Cuba incorporate a port stop in Havana either for a full day or overnight so passengers can partake in at least one full-day shore excursion. Typically, these shorter Cuba cruises incorporate a port of call in either Mexico or the Caribbean as well. For longer duration Cuba cruises, passengers can opt for a partial Cuba circumnavigation cruise, which make ports of call in Santiago de Cuba and Cienfuegos. If passengers are keen on doing a full Cuba circumnavigation cruise, these itineraries will sail to more remote ports of call, such as La Isla de Juventud.

The best time to go on a Cuba cruise is from December to March, when the weather is delightful and rain is sparse. From May to October the temperature can reach unbearable levels, but if you can withstand the heat and humidity, try to book your Cuba cruise in July so you can be a part of the effervescent Carnival festival that occurs every year in Santiago de Cuba.

Tulum and Cancun are already some of the hottest destinations in the world. But why not take your vacation to another level by taking a trip back in time to 1950s-era Cuba which has recently reopened to the public?

From Cancun to Havana Cuba is just 275 nautical miles or a quick 1 hour 10 minute flight.

The pandemic’s toll on the global tourism industry continues, our go-to airline in Mexico – Interjet – has ceased operations to stave off bankruptcy but expects to resume operations in 2022. For the most up-to-date flight information we start our search  here . 

Cancun to Havana Cuba in 2022 Cancun to Havana flights in 2022 : There are daily flights from Cancun to Havana year-round. Only Interjet airlines flies direct from Cancun Mexico to Cuba. In the peak months in Cancun (December to March) there are 3 direct flights per day. As such, flights do sell out in advance but we scored flights for less than $150 USD two weeks before flying.   2022 Update: As of January 2022, there are no direct flights from Cancun to Havana. The quickest way to visit Havana from Cancun is to fly via Mexico City (or even via Miami, though we discuss why we don’t recommend flying via Miami below). Viva Aerobus flies direct from Mexico City to Havana Cuba daily. The travel situation in Cuba is changing quickly and direct flights from Cancun may open up any day, so we recommend using Momondo to find cheap flights to Cuba. Cancun to Havana ferry in 2022 : There are no ferries from Cancun, Mexico to Cuba. Unless you’re smuggling Mezcal to Cuba or cigars back into Mexico save time and fly to Cuba.  Where to Stay in Havana : We traipsed all over town to identify first-hand the safest and best neighborhoods in Havana to stay and the best hotels, apartments and homestays “Casa Particulars” near all the best attractions with wifi that actually works. * 2022 Update * The fastest way to get from Cancun to Cuba is now a flight via Mexico City or Miami. We recommend flying via Mexico City as the Cuba visa fee is less than half of the cost from the US (not to mention an easier process). Viva Aerobus flies to Cuba from Mexico City daily.

Even in peak season there are only a handful of flights per day from Cancun to Havana. Airfare for Cancun to Cuba flights will cost between $79 and $200. Flying time from Cancun to Cuba is 1 hour 10 minutes. Flights depart from Cancun International Airport 10 minutes from Cancun Old Town or 20 minutes from Cancun Hotel Zone. Flights arrive in Jose Marti International Airport, La Habana, Cuba located 20 – 30 minutes drive from Havana City.

Momondo is the website to search for flights from Cancun to Havana.

Interjet Airlines has 3 flights per day in high season from Cancun to Havana. All “light” fares include 55 lbs (25kg) checked baggage allowance as standard on flights to Cuba. The first flight of the day typically departs Cancun at 8:15am and the last flight at 17:50. Flights around midday and early afternoon are the most popular. 

If you are travelling from Mexico and don’t wish to visit Cancun there are direct flights to Havana from Mexico City and Merida. Search Momondo for available flights. Interjet has the cheapest flights from Mexico to Havana but Aeromexico also services the route.

What Airlines Fly from Mexico to Cuba?

Interjet offers direct flights to Cuba from Monterrey, Mexico City, Merida and Cancun. AeroMexico offers direct flights to Cuba from Mexico City. 

Copa Airlines offers indirect flights to Mexico from Cuba.

Interjet Airways is the cheapest airline which flies from Mexico to Cuba. Although it is cheaper than Aeromexico, it really shouldn’t be classified as a budget airline like WizzAir , Ryanair or SkyAirways . 

Cancun to Havana by Boat or Ferry

Despite their close distance, there is currently no (legal) ferry or boat to transport you from Cancun to Havana.

How to Get a Cuba Visa (Tourist Card)

Visitors to Cuba from pretty much every country in the world will need a visa to visit Cuba.

Known as officially as a “Tourist Visa Card” there are two types of Cuba Visas – a green tourist card and a pink tourist card.

A pink tourist card applies to anyone flying to Cuba from the United States and it costs over $100.

The good news for travellers flying from Cancun to Cuba is you only need a green visa which costs much less.

There are two ways to get a Cuba visa in Mexico:

1. Buy an Interjet Tourist Card for Cuba at the Airport

You can purchase a Cuba visa at the airport from the Airline customer service counter.

The price is around 250 mxp ($13) which is the cheapest Cuba visa around.

That said, the thought of being denied entry to Cuba because things have changed, or simply because Mexican authorities don’t have enough forms on the day worried me.

So, I called our airline Interjet to inquire about whether we could buy a Cuba Visa from the airport in Mexico City ahead of time. 

We were told we couldn’t do this but we were reassured it would be no problem at all buying a visa from Interjet at check-in in Cancun.

Fast forward 2 weeks and we found ourselves without a visa as we arrived to check-in to our flight. As we approached the line an Interjet staff member asked (in English) for our Cuba Visa.

When we said we didn’t’ have one he whipped out one which we could purchase for 400 MXP or $25 USD (cash only). 

He then took our passports and wrote in our information which is great because it’s  his problem if he writes the information incorrectly and needs to start again.

So we can tell you first-hand as of February 2020, it’s perfectly safe to buy an Interjet Cuba Visa at Cancun Airport.

2. Buy Cuba Visa Online

If you think buying a Cuba visa at the airport seems risky – we share(d) your thoughts.

The cheapest way to get a Cuba visa is from this agent . 

You simply enter your details into the form and they will send you a Visa within 1 business day.

Note this only applies for visitors (including US citizens) travelling from Mexico.

If you’re travelling from a US airport you will need to obtain a pink tourist card from a Cuban embassy .

Essential Information for Visiting Havana

Entry Requirements include the aforementioned Tourist Card, which allows you to stay in the Cuba for 30 days and is valid for only a single entry.

You will also need to have:

• A passport valid for 2 months beyond the length of your proposed visit.
• Proof of a confirmed return flight and booked accommodation.
• Proof of accommodation for at least the 1st night in Cuba.
• Travel insurance which covers medical expenses.

Remember, June is the rainiest month in Cuba – so be sure to pack the umbrella! Read about the best time to visit Cuba .

Here’s a fun fact about flying into Cuba: shortly before landing cabin stewards walk down the aisle to spray bug spray into the air to decontaminate the plane before landing.

This aircraft disinfection” is a stipulation of the World Health Organization for inbound aircraft to Cuba.

It won’t hurt and won’t kill you, so don’t be alarmed. At least now you know what they’re doing and why.

Havana Airport to Havana City

After arriving in Havana Airport and passing through immigration, head straight our the doors and turn left. Ignore all the touts offering you

About 100 metres away you will see a rank of yellow taxis which are the official taxis in Havana. Before jumping in a taxi make sure to agree on the fare because meters are not usually used.

A taxi from Havana Airport to Havana centro costs between 25 – 30 CUC (pesos cubano convertible) which is roughly $25 – 30 USD. The drive from the airport to Havana is about 30 minutes.

We paid $30 cuc for a maxi-taxi for four people to Vedado which is a suburb 10 minutes drive from Havana Vieja (aka Old Town).

For the return journey from Havana Old Town to Havana Airport we paid $20 cuc. Next time we visit Havana, if there’s just the two of us we’ll try to negotiate $20 cuc for a taxi to the center of town.

Things to do in Cuba

Visiting Havana was the highlight of our time in Cuba. Walking the old town feels like you’ve fallen into a time machine set to 1940s. It’s amazing. 

A few bucket list activities you can’t miss (which we’ve taken from our list of the 50 best things to do in Havana ) are:

• take a city tour in a classic American car (preferably a pink convertible)
• sip a Mojito or Cuba Libre in one of the famous hotels frequented by stars of the 40s including Frank Sinatra, Errol Flynn, and the writer whose now famous for drinking at bars from Paris to Havana to Key West: Ernest Hemingway
• take a day trip to Vinales where you can ride horseback and roll a Cuban cigar

Where to Stay when you get to Cuba?

There are not many hotels in Cuba and the ones that are there are run by the government.

Hi there, thanks for the great information here. I’m wondering if you know a way to currently book airfare from Cancun to Havana. Since we are in the United States, none of the booking sites will allow me to book this leg of the trip because of “regulatory reasons.” I’m willing to book the tickets once we are in Cancun, but of course worry about not being able to get such a last minute flight. Any info would be great. Thank you!

Yes, this does appear to be a problem for many travelers. It has become increasingly difficult to travel to Cuba post Covid. Let us know if you find out any more information as a lot of people are in the same boat.

Great review and detail.....but for whatever reason when we were looked we simply could not get flights from Cancun to Havana. The airline you recommend looks like it is now bankrupt and other airlines don't seem to have service.

The very last cruise to Cuba from Mexico was slashed sometime just before your post. I wonder if a new route has been re-instated, or if you found a way...

Not quite. The Celestyal cruise ( http://yourcubacruise.com ) can be boarded in Montego Bay, Jamaica . Some or all of the Star Clippers cruises to Cuba ( http://starclippers.co.uk ) have a stop in the Cayman Islands. These cruises board in Cuba (Cienfuegos, I believe) but perhaps it is possible to board in the Caymans if one talks to the right people.

I also read a blog some time ago by the owners of a large pleasure craft that plies the Caribbean , occasionally carrying paying/working passengers. They visited Cuba with passengers, but the passengers also left with them; as Beardo suggested a boat of that type simply dropping off a passenger would not be tolerated.

Celebrity cruise ship rescues 7 people from small vessel 'adrift' between Cuba and Mexico

A Celebrity Cruises ship rescued a group of people from another vessel between Cuba and Mexico this week.

Celebrity Apex “encountered a small vessel adrift and in need of assistance” on Monday, according to a spokesperson for the cruise line.

“The ship’s crew immediately launched a rescue operation, safely bringing (seven) people onboard,” the spokesperson told USA TODAY an emailed statement. “The crew provided them with medical attention, and is working closely with the U.S. Coast Guard.”

The ship departed from Fort Lauderdale for a week-long cruise with stops in Key West, Belize, Cozumel, Mexico and Grand Cayman on Saturday, according to CruiseMapper . The Celebrity spokesperson did not specify who the people in the vessel were.

The ship notified the Coast Guard of the rescue “but there was no U.S. Coast Guard involvement in the case” because of its location, Petty Officer Eric Rodriguez said.

“In accordance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and maritime tradition, it is common and somewhat expected that mariners will render assistance to other seafarers in distress if they have the capability to do so,” he said in an email.

The news comes after another cruise ship, Carnival Jubilee, rescued two men stranded in a kayak off the coast of Mexico’s Isla Mujeres in January.

A cruise turned into a nightmare for people aboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas when a young man jumped overboard shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday.

The 18-story ship was sailing between Cuba and the Bahamas’ Grand Inagua Island when the as-yet-unidentified man jumped off one of the decks.

According to onlookers, his father and brother watched helplessly as he leaped over the side.

Some passengers said it appeared to be an impulsive, spur-of-the-moment decision. 

“I had hung out with him and his brother in the hot tub until 3:30,” passenger Bryan Sims tells The Post. ” It was standing room only. He sat right beside me the whole time.”

“He was pretty drunk,” Sims continues.

“As we were walking from the hot tub back to the elevators, his dad and brother were walking towards us. His dad was fussing at him for being drunk, I guess.” “When we got to them, he said to his dad, ‘I’ll fix this right now.’ And he jumped out the window in front of us all.” 

“There was a lot of yelling, and the crew was alerted immediately,” another passenger,  Deborah Morrison, told The Post.

“His family was horrified. Just beside themselves. I can’t even begin to imagine what they’re going through.”

“It was insane,” says Sims. “It was just surreal.” 

In a statement to The Post, Royal Caribbean said its crew immediately sprang into action following the incident.

“The ship’s crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search,” the statement reads.

“Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family during this difficult time. For the privacy of the guest and their family, we have no additional details to share.”

News of the apparent suicide attempt quickly spread among the guests — and many of them tried to help in any way they could.

“The early morning was definitely somber as so many people came out of their cabins to stare at the sea, hoping to be able to aid in finding the person,” said Amy Phelps Fouse, a passenger on the ship.

“Royal Caribbean has been excellent at communicating updates throughout the day,” Fouse continued. “They have asked that people act with compassion in light of the tragic situation.”

Overboard incidents on cruise ships are rare.

According to the Washington Post , about 386 people were reported to have gone overboard on the major cruise lines between 2000 to 2020.

Cuba decried Ecuador raid on Mexican embassy – but Castro stormed diplomatic missions too

Like most countries in Latin America, Cuba strongly condemned a recent raid by Ecuador’s military on Mexico’s embassy in Quito to arrest former vice president Jorge Glass, who faces corruption charges and had been granted asylum by the Mexican government.

Cuban leader Miguel Díaz-Canel said the incident, which resulted in Mexico cutting diplomatic ties with Ecuador, was “an unacceptable violation” of diplomatic conventions.

He said on X that “the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which is an essential component of International Law, must be respected by all.”

What Diaz-Canel didn’t say: Cuba’s late leader Fidel Castro twice ordered armed assaults on foreign embassies to arrest refugees seeking protection, setting an almost forgotten precedent for the assault on the Mexican embassy. In a third incident, Cuban police officers also entered the grounds of an embassy in Havana to arrest a man seeking asylum inside.

One of those assaults, on Feb. 13, 1981, involved the Ecuadorian embassy in Havana, and as a result, the two countries were also on the brink of breaking diplomatic relations.

That day, a group of 31 Cubans led by armed former military officials broke into the Ecuadorian embassy in Havana and took three diplomats hostage, among them Ambassador Jorge Pérez Concha, demanding political asylum to leave the country. The group included four women and six children and was led by a former Cuban rebel army captain, Rómulo Juan Delgado y Fernández.

At the time, it was extremely difficult to migrate from Cuba because the government severely restricted travel abroad. The break-in at the embassy of Ecuador happened almost a year after hundreds of Cubans crammed into the Peruvian embassy in Havana in April 1980 seeking political asylum. The events at the Peruvian embassy led to the exodus of 125,000 Cubans to the United States in what became known as the Mariel boatlift.

Worried about another potential crisis amid growing public discontent, the Cuban government warned it was not willing to negotiate with the refugees at the Ecuadorian embassy, calling them “criminals” and “antisocial” in official Cuban state media.

A week after the armed group entered the embassy, it released the diplomats unharmed and surrendered the weapons, but stayed inside the embassy, hoping to get safe passage, according to multiple press reports . Ecuador authorities said at the time they were taking the group under their protection. But a day later, Cuban special troops stormed the embassy and arrested several members of the group in an operation reportedly directed by Castro, who was seen at the scene, several news agencies reported.

The Cuban foreign ministry said Ecuador’s government had authorized the raid, but the country’s president, Jaime Roldós, denied it and formally protested, calling the intrusion “intolerable.” Roldós also demanded the “unrestricted respect for the life and freedom of those who were inside the embassy.” He later recalled the country’s ambassador to Havana and demanded that Cuba release the refugees.

Castro had other plans.

He accused the CIA of plotting the whole incident, and his government imprisoned several members of the group that sought asylum at the Ecuadorian embassy, according to press reports and Cuba Archive, an organization that has built a database with historical records of deaths and disappearances of a political nature on the island.

Juan Owen Delgado Temprana , who was 15 and who had entered the embassy with his parents and 12 family members, died in a hospital in Pinar del Rio on March 3 after suffering a beating at Havana’s State Security Headquarters, according to Cuba Archive, which cites accounts from close relatives and other historical sources.

In a lesser-known incident on Dec. 10, 1980, also recorded by Cuba Archive and the Spanish newspaper El País, Cuban security forces stormed the diplomatic mission of the Vatican in Havana and arrested 14 people who wanted to leave the country and had taken four nuns as hostages. According to El País , the group had shot one embassy guard.

Three brothers – Ventura, Cipriano, and Eugenio García Marín Thompson – who were part of the group and were Jehovah’s Witnesses, a religious group that suffered harassment for decades under Castro’s rule, were sentenced in a summary trial and executed at the Cabaña Fortress prison on Jan. 2, 1981, according to Cuba Archive. They were aged 19, 21, and 25.

The most recent incident involving Cuban security forces breaking into an embassy happened on July 13, 1990, when four Cuban police officers chased a man who had jumped a gate at the Spanish Embassy in Havana seeking asylum. The four officers also jumped the gate, firing shots, took down the man, handcuffed him and shoved him into a car with a state security license plate, according to a report in El País. Spanish diplomats protested, and Cuban authorities apologized.

On Sunday, the Cuban ambassador to Ecuador was among the diplomats escorting the Mexican ambassador on her way to the airport to leave the South American country after the break in diplomatic relations.

The Cuban foreign minister, Bruno Rodríguez, said the gesture was showed solidarity with Mexico.

Update: The original version of this story incorrectly cited a Cuba Archive publication and reported that three people who had sought refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy had been executed. The story has been corrected to reflect that the three executed had sought refuge in the Vatican embassy in 1980.
