Frequently Asked Questions

Please browse through some of the frequently asked questions about this cycling tour. If you have any further questions, or would like any more information, please contact us and we will answer by email.

Should I do the longer or shorter routes?

This depends entirely on you! The longer and shorter routes all start and finish at the same place, and so you can decide on any given day which you would prefer to do. There is no need to commit until the day of the ride itself. On the longer routes you see more and are able to visit more places, while the shorter routes are more relaxing and ideal if you like to take your time and go at a slower pace.

When can I do this tour?

This tour is available starting on any day throughout the year. It is particularly popular in winter and spring due to the warm climate, but it is also a great choice in summer.

What is the weather like?

Gran Canaria has a sub-tropical climate, meaning there is little variation in the weather throughout the year. Average daytime temperatures in winter range from 16°C (61°F) to 23°C (73°F), depending on altitude, making it a great choice for a winter cycling holiday. But the weather is also great in summer, where it doesn't tend to get as hot as in mainland Spain. Average daytime temperatures in summer are around 27°C (80°F). There is also little rain throughout the year. The two nights in the middle of the holiday are spent at a higher altitude (around 1,400m / 4,500 feet). It is usually still quite warm even at this altitude, but you should be prepared for slightly cooler conditions here.

Can I personalise or change aspects of this tour?

Absolutely! We have designed a tour that we feel strikes a great balance between cycling routes, accommodation and interesting towns. However, if, for example, you would like to do the tour for a different number of days, stay in a different level of accommodation, or extend the route to a different location, we would be happy to discuss the options with you.

Why does this tour not stay more on the coast?

The main reason is that we believe that a lot of the better cycling routes and more interesting regions are away from the coast. When staying on the coast you have to begin most days by riding up 500-1000m of elevation, often on quite busy roads, just to get to the more scenic parts. We think its best to avoid that and stay in authentic towns more inland. However, the holiday does spend two nights on the coast in the charming town of Agaete and in Maspalomas. In both of these towns the hotel is situated just a few metres from the beach.

What is your cancellation policy?

The full cancellation policy can be found in out terms and conditions .

Our Cappuccino Road Tours offer an enjoyable experience for those who want to go for rides that are focussed more on the social aspect of group riding. Furthermore, we allow plenty of time for taking in the unique Gran Canarian nature and spectacular scenery, may that be mountains, coastline or villages. However, there are still a few challenges to overcome on every ride. Even if the pace is relatively slow, the island is anything but flat, and together we’ll conquer the hills and descents that come our way!

Fear not, we will take regular breaks for refuelling and taking photos of the spectacular scenery. Let’s go!

Our Sport Road Tours are for the experienced rider, who is used to long hours in the saddle, riding in a group, and can hold a faster and more consistent pace on longer climbs. Technical Difficulty (TD) & Fitness Level (FL) Ratings

cycle tours gran canaria

TD0 (Very easy) - TD0 are routes without any particular difficulties. They run mostly on unsealed roads or paths on a natural surface with good grip, or compact gravel. Steps, rocks or roots are not to be expected. The gradient will be slight to moderate, turns are not tight. These roads/ trails can generally be ridden even without any particular technical MTB skills.

cycle tours gran canaria

TD1 (Easy) - On TD1 routes, you will have to ride over smaller obstacles such as flat roots and small stones/rocks. Very often you'll find that the odd gulley or erosion damage is the reason for this difficulty rating. The surface may not always be firm. The gradient would have a maximum of 40%. The turns are generally wide. TD1 routes will require basic technical MTB skills and constant attention. The trickier passages call for dosed breaking and body displacement. They should generally be ridden in a standing position. Obstacles can generally be rolled over.

cycle tours gran canaria

TD2 (Somewhat difficult) - TD2 routes often contain larger roots and stones/rocks. The surface is frequently loose. Steps can be expected. Often there are narrow/tight turns and the gradient can be up to 70% in places. The obstacles require body displacement to be successfully ridden. Readiness to break at all times and the ability to shift your centre of gravity are necessary techniques, as well as the ability to regulate the pressure of your breaking and hold permanent body tension.

cycle tours gran canaria

TD3 (Difficult) - Blocked singletrack with larger boulders, tricky rock gardens and/or root passages can be encountered on TD3 routes. There are often higher steps, tight hairpin turns and tricky traverses. The opportunities for relaxed rolling are rare. The surface is often very slippery due to loose materials. A gradient of over 70% is not unusual. Sections with this difficulty rating require you to have very good bike handling skills and unbroken concentration. Exact breaking and a very good sense of balance is required.

cycle tours gran canaria

TD4 (Very difficult) - TD4 routes include very steep and blocked singletrack, with large boulders, challenging rockgardens and/or demanding root passages, as well as frequently loose scree. Very steep slopes, narrow hairpin turns and steps on which the cogs unavoidably touch are frequent features on TD4 routes. In order to safely ride this category route, techniques such as being able to move the front and back wheels sideways (e.g. in hairpins) are absolutely essential, as well as outstanding breaking technique and balance. Even carrying a bike up such passages is often not free from dangers.

cycle tours gran canaria

TD5 (Extremely difficult) - TD5 routes are characterised by blocked terrain with counter climbs, scree slopes and severe erosion, extremely narrow and tight turns, multiple obstacles (e.g. fallen trees) – frequently in extreme steepness (cliffs). Very little if any breaking time. Obstacles may at times need to be ridden in combination, and many of them have to be jumped over. Hairpins are so tight that moving the wheels sideways is hardly possible, even carrying the bike would be almost impossible as you need your hands to hold on, or even climb."

Fitness Level (FL) scale for MTB & eMTB

Consider all factors and identify which level best describes your current MTB riding routine. The scale is merely a guide. If you are unsure of which level to choose, please speak to any of our staff, they will be happy to assist you in making the right choice.

Basic You ride an MTB once a week, in general for at least an hour each time, on mixed surfaces, including a few short hills.

Medium You ride an MTB twice a week, in general for at least a couple of hours each time, on mixed surfaces, including a few long hills.

High You ride an MTB ˃2 times per week, in general for at least a couple of hours each time, on mixed surfaces, including long hills.

General MTB  Our MTB tours are mainly designed for fit and experienced offroad riders. Our current tours have a distinct cross-country flavour and all of them include a few longer, tougher climbs. The routes are a great mix of broken dirt roads and singletrack, amongst mountains, valleys and along the southern coastline. Some sections of winding asphalt roads do exist, mainly as connections between the various riding areas. Furthermore, all the routes have some technically challenging sections (T2 and/or T3) which require some extra focus and effort. In general however, it is the elevation that makes these rides ‘advanced’, more than the technical difficulty. Join us on these great mountain bike adventures that showcase the hidden offroad gems of south-central Gran Canaria. Let’s GO!

This section explains each difficulty rating in more detail, and the necessary technical skills required. It assumes that the riding conditions (light, weather, ground etc.) are ideal.

General e-MTB Our e-MTB tours are well suited for MTB riders who have good bike handling skills, but don’t necessarily want to push themselves too hard on the longer, tougher climbs. In general however, it is the elevation that makes these rides ‘advanced’, more than the technical difficulty, but with our great e-MTB’s it’s pure joy! Join us on these great mountain bike adventures that showcase the hidden offroad gems of south-central Gran Canaria. Let’s GO!

Words from our clients

We rented two really great road bicycles. They gave us good recommendations for tours we could do on our own. We also went twice on tour with them where they transported us so we could ride different routes. Anja, our guide was really professional and fun and kept us safe.

Ayagaures MTB Marathon

The Ayagaures MTB Marathon 2019 was a surprisingly cold experience. The first year, my form was really bad. I had come from a difficult situation and was not prepared to race.

What to expect when participating in one of our group rides, tours or cycling camps

We keep our group sizes down to a maximum of ten riders plus the guide. This keeps it personal and friendly, and is more manageable on public roads. The primary language for our tours is English, however we also speak German, Norwegian and Spanish.

Whether you are a natural born mountain goat, small and rocket fast in the climbs, or bigger, more muscular, advantageous in the winds, everyone profits from riding in a group. The social aspect is key, and a smile or a shared laugh can flatten any gradient. Share the experience and form bonds that unite.

We know the terrain and the routes, so we ensure the pacing is appropriate to everyone's individual level. Similarly, we know each descent and can guide you safely home, while letting you make the most of the lines that spread out before you.

For those wishing to push ahead on selected longer climbs, we may co-ordinate clear meeting points to best harmonise the group, allowing each rider find their own rhythm. These mountains can be challenging and you can easily overdo it, so be conservative, consistent and communicative!

Cycling in Gran Canaria – Climbs, Routes & Hotels

Gran Canaria has become a go-to destination for cyclists looking for some nice weather, beautiful cycle routes and great sights, all year round. As part of the Canary Islands , it’s the perfect venue for cycle tours, winter training and more – Team Sky often train over the winter in the nearby Tenerife for that reason, and Tinkoff Saxo often visit Gran Canaria for their training camps.

Despite the fair weather and volcanic beaches, Gran Canaria is certainly not an easy ride, however. Gran Canaria boasts a number of challenging climbs, rising to around 2000 metres, and some tough gradients for those looking to test their legs. The island is great for both DIY cycle tours if you want to plan your own trip or planned tours through an operator.

How to Get to Gran Canaria?

Fortunately, Gran Canaria is a very popular tourist destination. That means getting there is a piece of cake. All major airports provide direct flights, and there are plenty of connections with the other Canary Islands. Due to the frequency of flights, the cost to get there is also very economical.

Just keep in mind the transport costs of getting your bike there, which can be more than double the total cost. Some airlines allow you to take your bike on as hold luggage for free, or you can get a special bike box and pay the extra fee. Alternatively, there are plenty of options available if you’d prefer to hire a bike out there. From Gatwick in the UK, the flight time is around four hours.

When to go to Gran Canaria?

Due to its fair weather, it’s a great destination all-year-round. You’ll find cooler temperatures over winter, and try to avoid the busy school summer holidays, which will also raise the price significantly.

Where to stay in Gran Canaria?

The Maspalomas area is a popular option for sun, golfing, beaches, families and cyclists. The available cycling routes from Maspalomas are excellent, with a wide variety of routes and plenty of cycling-friendly hotels. Alternatively, the fishing port of Puerto de Mogán has lots of accommodation options, restaurants and a great beach for downtime. Agaete is another good option on the northwest of the island. It’s quieter than the south side, with a great volcanic beach and saltwater rocks.

Finally, the capital, Las Palmas , is the hub of the island. However, for cycling only, be warned that it’s traffic-heavy and you probably want to get a few miles out of the centre before starting a ride.

Gran Canaria’s Cycling Climbs

Valley of the Tears : Possibly Gran Canaria’s most iconic cycling spot, the Valley of the Tears (VOTT) is aptly named. Why? Because it features a challenging climb reaching 25% gradient . If you are looking for a demanding climb, then this is where you should head – it’s 11.8 km long and its average gradient is 8%, which also includes a few descending sections. You’ll end up ascending just over 1000 metres, so don’t go out too hard. VOTT is a ‘must-do’ for cycling fans heading to Gran Canaria.

Tauro Pass : Beginning in Mogan, the Tauro Pass is one of the most scenic climbs in Gran Canaria. The climb is a popular spot for cyclists so you’ll see plenty of friendly faces on the way up, and the views are truly astonishing as you cycle through the switchbacks.

Soria : Soria is another great climb, connecting Arguineguin (the coastal town) to the Tauro Pass. Again, this climb features a lot of switchbacks, with a steep left turn at the top to take you away from Soria. If you continue, you’ll reach the Tauro Pass, where you have the option of either turning left to descend to Porto de Mogan, or continue straight for more climbing.

Pico De Las Nieves : This is the highest point on the island. There are a few routes to reach the top but it’s most commonly found via Maspalomas, and the climb up to Pico de las Nieves is an arduous one. It’s 40 km in length and has an average gradient of 4.7%. The climb evens out quite nicely with plenty of short descents on the way up to give your legs a break. But, with 11 km to go, the climb kicks again and the gradient becomes a lot steeper. Save energy for this! When you reach the top you’ll be at the Roque Nublo, otherwise known as the ‘rock in the clouds’, a sacred monument.

Santa Lucia : The climb through the village of Santa Lucia is a steady ascent providing great views and plenty of stopping opportunities. The climb takes you towards the centre of the island, via San Bartolome. You can either descend here back down to the coast or continue up to Ayacate, before you’ll join the final few kilometres before the Pico de Las Nieves.

Gran Canaria: Perfect for all abilities

With perfect temperatures and conditions all year long, Gran Canaria is a great location for all cycling abilities – from beginners to sportive riders to seasoned pro’s. Cycling in Gran Canaria has been made even better in recent years following the Government’s emphasis on resurfacing the cycling roads, opening new tunnels and improving traffic systems.

Tour of Gran Canaria

The Tour of Gran Canaria is a 6 days guided & supported epic road trip all around the mountainous island of Gran Canaria.

The Tour of Gran Canaria is 6 day guided & supported epic road trip all round the mountainous island of Gran Canaria. We stay in luxurious hotels right across the island, starting from the hot and arid south, to the cool forests in the interior, then moving down to the windy north west coast, before making our way down the spine of the west coast, crossing 3 weather zones to arrive back in the south, a last valiant effort takes back up to the centre almost to the top, before we descend again to the south and our last night with a big party!

Bike Basque is happy to partner with “ Cycle Gran Canaria ” and to propose you this fantastic trip to still enjoy to ride in winter under a sunny weather.

Gran Canaria has always been a pro cycling destination , old photos of Merckx, Indurain & Pantani adorn some of the old cyclists restaurants, now again with some professional teams, the island has a second birth in the modern times. The governement has responded positively by resurfacing nearly all of the roads to F1 quality, opening new tunnels to syphon of the majority of the traffic along the coast roads. The climbs are still long and steep but consistent and also with plateaus so one can recover, repare and go again.

All the hotels are bike friendly and the local traffic are resoundingly polite and shout encouragement to you, no doubt some of them are reliving past glory days, because the typical Canarian man or woman will have done some sport and all will have respect for you in facing their mountains!

Cycling in Gran Canaria

Bike touring

Cycling in Gran Canaria is the stuff dreams are made of, particularly if you’ve got thighs of steel and an enthusiasm that just won’t quit. A rugged circle in the core of the Canary Island archipelago, the weather is fantastic all year round, with winter being a particularly fantastic time to attempt the island’s challenging climbs.

The heart of the island is the much-loved Pico de las Nieves and its higher sibling, Morro de la Agujereada. Both make for unrivalled objectives for expert cyclists and on clear days, look north to see the giant Teide on Tenerife. Almost entirely mountainous, cycle routes in Gran Canaria will provide you with considerable climbing. Indigenous pine forests, jagged cliffs and exhilarating bike trails all mean you’ll be well-compensated for your effort: the descents are out of this world.

For flatter rides (and ice creams), cycling in Las Palmas is a fun way to explore the beaches and city.

Situated off the African coast, Gran Canaria has an ideal position in the Atlantic Ocean. With an area of 1,560 km2 and an altitude of 1,956 m, Gran Canaria is the third largest island of the archipelago in both area and altitude and enjoys spring-like temperatures all year round. Gran Canaria is a very mountainous island and rainfall is very rare in the summer months, an average of 21 days per year. With nearly 3000 hours of sunshine annually, this is one of the sunniest places in the world.

Biker Island Heaven

In addition to the excellent weather conditions, there are many other reasons that make it so easy to see why Gran Canaria is an ideal all year round place to ride a motorcycle:

  • challenging mountain roads
  • thousands of bends and hairpins
  • smooth tarmac roads
  • quaint unspoiled villages

The roads are mountainous with abrupt and spectacular landscapes. With only a few short motorways on the Island, Gran Canaria is a biker island heaven.

Winter Motorcycle Tours

No other European location can match the Canaries for reliable sunshine and the mountain passes and roads easily match and even excel roads in central Europe, the difference is you can ride here in the winter too – an ideal destination for winter motorcycle tours .

Martin Flynn & Joy Allen of Canary Motorcycle Tours

About Canary Motorcycle Tours

Canary Motorcycle Tours was started in 2013 by Martin Flynn and his partner Joy Allen.

Discovering Gran Canaria

Martin, a Motorcycle Instructor with an established motorcycle training school in South Manchester, and Joy, an ex-civil servant of 20 years, decided to start the business after holidaying in Gran Canaria and realizing the awesome potential these roads have and how amazing motorcycling in Gran Canaria is. While there are traditional motorcycle hire companies on the Island Joy and Martin wanted to give friendly and flexible approach to touring while offering the best riding experience and by providing informal guided tours for you instead of you spending half the day map reading.

Developing our Motorcycle Tours

After additional research, Joy and Martin realized the huge extent of the road network warranted a full weeks motorcycle tour, and Canary Motorcycle Tours began. With their knowledge of the Island, and Martin professional and extensive knowledge of motorcycles, you can be assured of a professional yet friendly week.

Building a great Tour Company

The company is continually developing and going from strength to strength with many customers returning year after year. Canary Motorcycle Tours consistently receives 5 star TripAdvisor's and Google reviews in addition to numerous Certificate of Excellence, in recognition for its excellent customer service and commitment to providing value for money. Martin and Joy love island life and believe they have a fantastic job, not only riding on this marvelous island, but meeting fellow riders while showing and sharing their own hairpin heaven. Gran Canaria is biking's best kept secret.

Itinerary Detail

Welcome to Gran Canaria!

Your Cycling Camp starts at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Airport where our staff will meet you before the short transfer to your hotel in Agaete.

After lunch, orientation meeting and bike build-up, you’ll head out for your first ride in Gran Canaria, up the magnificent climb to El Sao.

cycle tours gran canaria

The Coast & La Ruta de las Presas

A beautiful ride today with a mix of coastal cliff scenery and high mountains on the Ruta de las Presas.

From Agaete you’ll head south-west for 30km (19 miles) through the Tamadaba Natural Park along a spectacular road that clings to the cliffs, high above the Atlantic Ocean. You’ll want to stop at every corner for another photo – the views are that stunning! La Aldea signals the end of the coastal road and the beginning of the long climb to the central part of the island. The top lies 26km (16 miles) ahead at an altitude of 1,100m (3,600ft) – through some of the most incredible scenery on the island. From the top enjoy 20km (12 miles) of rolling terrain through forests and green fields before the long descent back to the hotel.

cycle tours gran canaria

The Infamous Valley of the Tears

This is one of the most remarkable and challenging days you will ever spend on a bike. The Valley of the Tears route is one of the hardest rides on the island. This is epic Thomson terrain!

From the hotel in Agaete you’ll head inland to Fagajesto where you’ll join yesterday’s ride (in the opposite direction). At the Paralillo Reservoir a sharp left turn signals the start of the Valley of the Tears climb with initial ramps of over 15%. 10km (6 miles) of hurt lie ahead – but the views are amazing!

Just over the top of the climb you’ll be rewarded with a well deserved lunch stop in the cycling cafe in Ayacata – then a 35km (22 miles) descent to your next hotel in Puerto de Mogan.

cycle tours gran canaria

Ayacata & Fataga

Remember that 35km (22 miles) descent you came down yesterday, well the ride today starts with the same 35km – but uphill. The climb is simply spectacular – switchbacks galore, a perfect road surface, no traffic and a forest of pine trees to ride through. The first top comes at just under 1,000m (3,300m) in Cruz San Antonio, then it’s another 15km (9 miles) to the final summit at 1,300m (4,300ft) in Ayacata.

After a coffee-stop in Ayacata you’ll descend through San Bartolome and Fataga to the coast. Beware of the few short, ambush climbs on the descent, especially the final climb to Degollada de las Yeguas. A final 30km (19 miles) along the coast closes off the ride.

cycle tours gran canaria

From the hotel you’ll head along the coast then inland towards Baranquillo Andres. Keep your eyes open as this is the road most frequented by the many pros who train on the island.

At the 25km (15 miles) mark, the climbing starts with the steady climb to Barranquillo. Enjoy this section of the climb, after Barranquillo you’ll take a narrow, much steeper road with pitches between 10 and 15%.

The route continues with the fantastic descent to Pie de la Cuesta then it’s out and back from La Aldea, over the Degollada de la Aldea climb. A tough day in the saddle with almost 3,000m (9,800ft) of elevation!

cycle tours gran canaria

Cruz de Tejeda

Today’s ride takes you right into the centre of the island. The first 60km (37 miles) are just stunning with the climb to Cruz San Antonio followed by the climb to Ayacata.

After a coffee-stop in Ayacata you’ll continue climbing to the beautiful village of Tejeda which is classified in the list of “pueblos mas bonitos de Espana” (the most beautiful villages in Spain). From Tejeda the climbing continues with our staff’s favourite climb in Gran Canaria, the climb to Cruz de Tejeda and on to Los Llanos. From Los Llanos enjoy the 40km (25 miles) descent back to the hotel!

cycle tours gran canaria

Pico de las Nieves

The Camp ends with the most challenging climb on the island (and one of the toughest climbs in all of Europe), the brutal climb to Pico de las Nieves from Ingenio. Starting just above sea level, the summit tops out after 23km (14 miles) at 1,900m (6,200ft). It’s a tough one – but at the top, you are rewarded with stunning views of Tenerife’s El Teide in the distance. Keep your eyes open at the summit, we often meet pro riders out training on this great climb.

In the evening, join us at the hotel bar where beers and cocktails are in order to toast a fantastic week of riding!

Note: there’s a shorter ride option today which will also climb Pico de las Nieves, but from the much easier Ayacata side.

Tour of Gran Canaria & Tenerife

cycle tours gran canaria

The Canary Islands are a paradise for cyclists seeking to escape winter and enjoy warm temperatures and long climbs.

Begin the adventure in the south of the island with two nights in the picturesque Puerto de Mogan. Climb up to the centre of the volcanic island to Pico de las Nieves – the highest point of Gran Canaria and home to spectacular 360 degree views. On a clear day it’s possible to see Mont Teide on Tenerife. From Puerto Mogan ride north via the leg-busting, breathtaking Valley of the Tears – a climb that will break the legs of the strongest cyclist (don’t worry, we’ll be on hand to support every pedal stroke and offer a ride to the top!) but rewards the effort with stunning scenery all the way up. At the top of the climb is our resting place for the night in the Parador at the Cruz de Tejedor, a rural retreat in the clouds. The following day brings respite as our route descends to the north of the island and the volcanic beach of Agaete. Choose to ride further out and back along the rugged coast road or check-in to the hotel spa & relax!

Day 5 brings an early start & ferry ride across to Tenerife. Climb from the coast to the summit of Mont Teide, a climb that represents a huge challenge to cyclists from all over the world every year. Enjoy an evening on Tenerife before returning to Gran Canaria for our final ride of the tour, a rollercoaster ride through the lush green landscapes & villages in the north of Gran Canaria.

Stay in handpicked 4* hotels throughout the tour, enjoy a wide range of dining experiences selected to showcase the best cuisine on the islands and enjoy full support from the Eat Sleep Cycle team.

Cycling the Canary Islands: which island is best for you?

If you’re looking for a cycling holiday in the Canary Islands and aren’t sure which island to head to, then this article is for you.

You might already have found our in-depth guides to the Canary Islands cycling scene in Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. This article gives an overview of what the Canaries offer cyclists and makes it easier for you to compare the islands and decide which Canaries cycling destination is for you.

We start with an overview of the similarities between the islands ( here ). We then compare Tenerife, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria ( here ). We have a brief look at cycling in Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Graciosa ( here ), before sharing our firsthand tips for when to go, what to pack, where to stay and bike hire on the islands ( here ).

If you want to know what cycling holidays in the Canary Islands are all about – as well as which is the best Canary Island for cycling – read on!

Overview of cycling the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands archipelago is an autonomous community of Spain. The Canary Islands comprise eight main islands, including the cycling meccas of Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote (we think of them as the “big three”). Located just 300 kilometres from Morocco, all the islands have a fantastic climate and a special heritage.

The main draws of cycling in the Canary Islands are the year-round sun, the challenging climbs, the availability of cyclist-friendly services and of course the incredible landscapes. Expect stunning coastline, soaring mountain peaks and a great variety of terrain, encompassing everything from fertile farmland to lunar landscapes.

It’s also important to be aware of these things that are common to nearly all the Canary Islands

  • Tourism – many parts of nearly every one of the Canary Islands, certainly the “big three”, are pretty touristy. It’s not just cyclists that love all-year-around spring-like weather… The coastal areas are particularly prone to development and this is very much the case in Tenerife and Gran Canaria (in our opinion, Lanzarote has done a better job of limiting the style of development, if not the amount). However, find the good routes, and you can soon whisk yourself away from the busy coastline.
  • Climbing – The Canary Islands are not flat. They were formed by volcanoes (thousands of years ago) and the terrain is, as a result, mountainous. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are perhaps a little less vertical than the others, but still, don’t visit if you don’t like climbing!
  • Temperature – All the islands have a similar subtropical temperature throughout the year, though there is a surprising amount of local variation within each island, depending on where the rain shadows fall (those big ex-volcano mountain ranges at play again!). Peak season tends to fall during winter in northern Europe and during school summer holidays. Accommodation can be particularly expensive during winter.

Which Canary Island is best for cyclists?

As always, the answer depends on what you’re looking for. Here’s an overview of the three most famous islands, together with links to our in-depth guides, to help you decide where to take a cycling holiday in the Canary Islands.

  • Famous for: Mount Teide and pro cyclist training camps
  • Best for: serious amateurs looking for warm weather cycling in the mountains

Mount Teide in the background and forest landscapes perfect for cyclists

Where is Tenerife?

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands. It is situated in the Atlantic Ocean off the western coast of Africa, roughly 1,300 kilometres from mainland Spain.

Why is Tenerife popular?

Cyclists are drawn to Tenerife for its unique and challenging terrain coupled with an almost perfect cycling climate. The island’s diverse landscapes range from lunar-like volcanic terrain to lush forests. They offer a visual feast that keeps rides interesting.

The island’s long, winding ascents and descents are also ideal for serious level amateurs looking for endurance training.

It’s the Canary Island most people have heard of.

What is the terrain like?

Tenerife is probably the most mountainous of all the Canary Islands, and consequently offers the most demanding cycle routes.

The ascent to Mount Teide is Tenerife’s crown jewel. Mount Teide, a dormant volcano and Spain’s highest peak, Teide offers a challenging climb that attracts cyclists from around the world. The climb can be approached from multiple sides, each offering a different gradient and scenic experience.

Other notable routes include the Masca climb, with its seriously steep and tight hairpin bends.

Is Tenerife popular with pro cyclists?

Tenerife has become a training ground for some of the world’s most famous cyclists. Professional cycling teams often choose Tenerife as a base for high-altitude training, especially around Mount Teide. The mountain’s long, steady climbs and altitude of over 2,000 metres make it perfect for building endurance and strength.

Cyclists such as Geraint Thomas, Chris Froome and Vincenzo Nibali have been known to train in Tenerife, taking advantage of the island’s unique landscape to prepare for major races. This pro endorsement adds to Tenerife’s reputation amongst cyclists.

Are there good cycling hotels in Tenerife?

Tenerife has some excellent bike hotels, depending on the level of location and level of luxury you’re looking for. Our article on Tenerife’s best cycling hotels is a good starting point.

Getting to Tenerife

Travelling to Tenerife from the UK is straightforward, with numerous direct flights available from major UK cities to Tenerife’s two airports: Tenerife South (Reina Sofia) and Tenerife North (Los Rodeos). Various airlines, including budget carriers, fly to Tenerife. Flights typically take around four to five hours.

For further guidance on Tenerife cycling, check out our guide to cycling Tenerife , top Tenerife cycling tips , the five best Mount Teide cycle routes , the Granadilla Vilaflor and Orotava loops of Teide, and the Masca and Teno lighthouse and Anaga Rural Park routes.

Gran Canaria

  • Famous for: the Valley of the Tears and jaw-dropping views from the top of Pico de las Nieves
  • Best for: year-round sunshine, white beaches and a range of lesser-known cycle routes

View from the summit of Pico de las Nieves cycling climb in Gran Canaria

Where is Gran Canaria?

Gran Canaria is the third-largest Canary Island, and the second-most populous. The island is located in the Atlantic Ocean off Africa’s northwest coast, well over 1,000 kilometres from the Spanish mainland.

Why is Gran Canaria popular?

We love Gran Canaria for its unspoiled natural landscapes: over 50% of the island is one UNESCO site or another and you’ll find mountains, valleys, forests and (inland) quaint, traditional villages. The climate is good all year-round, and it’s the ideal destination for combining cycling and beach life.

Though fewer cyclists tend to visit Gran Canaria than Tenerife or Lanzarote, there are some great routes to choose from. In our experience, we found there’s a little more variety of terrain than Tenerife and less wind than Lanzarote.

Gran Canaria is a little less mountainous than Tenerife, but still offers some challenging climbs.

The dormant Pico de las Nieves lies at the island’s centre, and the Valley of the Tears is another famous route on Gran Canaria. Other popular cycling routes include the GC503 and GC504 to Ayagaures, the Soria, Fataga and Serenity climbs which form part of the Pico de las Nieves route, and the GC60 and GC65 from Maspalomas.

Is Gran Canaria popular with pro cyclists?

While Gran Canaria isn’t as firmly established a pro training ground as other islands in the Canaries, it is rapidly growing in popularity. Cyclists and triathletes from all over the world come here to train. Chris Froome, Michal Kwiatkowski and Peter Sagan have also visited in recent years. The island is also increasingly becoming known as a cycling holiday destination.

Are there good cycling hotels in Gran Canaria?

Though you might not find the most luxurious hotels for cyclists in Gran Canaria, there are plenty to pick from if you can cope with some coastal concrete or don’t mind staying somewhere remote inland. Take a look at our guide to Gran Canaria cycling hotels for inspiration.

Getting to Gran Canaria

As one of the three most popular Canary Islands, it’s easy to fly to Gran Canaria from the UK. Gran Canaria Airport (Aeropuerto de Gran Canaria) lies on the east coast, and there are lots of direct flights, including budget and charter routes, to choose from. The average flight time is around four-and-a-half hours.

More information on cycling in Gran Canaria

You can find lots of further information in our complete guide to cycling in Gran Canaria , cyclists’ accommodation in Gran Canaria , routes such as the GC60 and GC65 from Maspalomas , the Valley of the Tears , the GC503 and GC504 to Ayagaures , or the Pico de las Nieves climb .

  • Famous for: a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, black sand beaches and Ironman Lanzarote
  • Best for: hilly rather than mountainous routes and low rise towns

Town of Arrecife in Lanzarote with mountains behind

Where is Lanzarote?

Lanzarote is the fourth-largest Canary Islands, and lies in the Atlantic Ocean around 125 kilometres from the western coast of Africa. The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Lanzarote is more than 1,000 kilometres from mainland Spain.

Why is Lanzarote popular?

Lanzarote is flatter than Tenerife and Gran Canaria. It’s therefore a good choice for anyone without too much climbing experience – or who wants less challenging routes. Though it is still a hilly island!

There’s also a good level of support for cyclists, so it’s easy to hire a bike, or book a cyclist friendly hotel. Lanzarote’s roads can also, in general, be pretty well maintained, especially in the areas covered by the Lanzarote Ironman triathlon course.

Lanzarote is less mountainous than Gran Canaria or Tenerife. It doesn’t have stand-out climbs like Gran Canaria and Tenerife. Here, the cycling routes are a little more gentle and laid-back.

While Lanzarote doesn’t have mountains, it does have lots of hills, particularly near the coast. As this island is relatively small, there are less cycling routes to choose from than on the larger Canary Islands.

You can use the Ironman Lanzarote bike course as inspiration for your route. This offers the option of riding the entire island, or you can cycle sections instead.

Other popular routes in Lanzarote include the Timanfaya and the volcanoes tour, or the Northern Lanzarote and Mirador del Rio loop.

Is Lanzarote popular with pro cyclists?

Lanzarote is famous for Ironman Lanzarote. This well established race has brought an influx of sportspersons to the island, including cyclists. An Ironman kids event is now also held here.

Lanzarote is particularly popular among amateur and pro triathletes.

Are there good cycling hotels in Lanzarote?

This Canary Island has plenty of cyclist-friendly accommodation. There are also lots of family-orientated hotels and apartment complexes, so it’s good for the best of both worlds.

One of our favourite things about Lanzarote is the fact there seem to be much stricter building control rules than on Tenerife or Gran Canaria. So there are far fewer high rise hotels and the villages are almost uniformly sparkling white.

Our guide to the top cycling hotels in Lanzarote should get you started.

Getting to Lanzarote

It’s simple to find an affordable flight from the UK to Lanzarote, with budget and charter options available. You can travel from London or regional airports to the island. Lanzarote Airport is also known as Arrecife Airport or César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport. It’s located about five kilometres southwest of Arrecife, the capital, and takes about 4.5 hours to get to from the UK.

What about the other Canary Islands?

Fuerteventura.

To date, Fuerteventura has been a little less popular than Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote among the cycling community. That probably stems from the island’s reputation for wind; it’s a well known destination for kitesurfing, windsurfing and sailing…

However, in reality, the winds aren’t the kind likely to upset a cyclist used to the UK climate and a lot of the great riding is inland, where wind is also tends to be less strong. There have also been reports of cyclists like Alberto Contador, Fabian Cancellara and the Schleck brothers training here; so what’s good enough for the pros is probably good enough for the likes of you and me?!

As well as the spectacular landscapes, one of Fuerteventura’s big draws is that it feels a little wilder than the “big three”. It’s also relatively quiet. It’s the second largest island by land mass, but has a much smaller population than the big three islands (in 2023, a population of roughly 125,000 compared with 954,000 on Tenerife (source: Statista )), which makes it a great choice for anyone looking for low traffic roads in the Canaries.

La Palma is a World Biosphere Reserve, Starlight Reserve and it also has a Marine Reserve. It covers 706 square kilometres and some of the most lush and unspoiled landscapes in the archipelago. Roque de los Muchachos is the highest point of the world’s steepest island, and a mountain range running from north to south dominates the centre.

Hiking is more popular than cycling in La Palma in the Canary Islands. To date, mountain biking has also had more of a look in than road and leisure cycling.

La Gomera has only 20,000 inhabitants, spread over 370 square kilometres. It’s been a biosphere reserve since 2012. It has a strong sustainability ethos and the tourism board seems supportive of cycling. In addition to its network of quiet roads, the island has developed seven off-road trails. These trails are between 1.7 and 25.3 kilometres long.

The island’s main treasure is the Garajonay National Park, but places such as the capital, La Villa, the stunning old quarter of Agulo and the cliffs of Alajeró are easily capable of stealing your heart too.

El Hierro is a place untroubled by tourism. It’s a UNESCO biosphere reserve and a Geopark too. It’s the smallest of the Canary Islands at just 268 square kilometres.

Canary Island wrestling might be the most popular sport on the island, but cycling is accepted too! Expect farmland, pine-clad slopes, red sand beaches, valleys and the odd challenging mountain pass. The El Hierro UNESCO Biosphere Reserve has mountains peaking at about 1,500 metres above sea level.

El Hierro is a fantastic place to get away from the madding crowd.

La Graciosa

La Graciosa won’t be attracting pro cyclists on their pre-season training any time soon; for a start, it doesn’t have any paved roads. You get here via boat from Lanzarote and its somewhere best explored by foot – or even better, on a gravel or mountain bike. If you’ve been, let us know in the comments below!

Planning a cycling trip to the Canary Islands

When to visit.

The Canary Islands are known for their “Eternal Spring” weather, and as a winter sun destination. So any time of year can be good for cycling as, on the whole, you can expect dry, sunny weather.

The hottest months in the Canaries are July and August, though the proximity to the coast coupled with trade winds stops temperatures from soaring too high. Average summer highs are around 28°C (82°F), with little to no rain from May to September.

December is the wettest month, with around five days of rain. In January and November you can expect about four wet days, or three in February and March and two in April and October.

In winter, the coldest temperature you can expect will be between 15°C (59°F) and 21°C (70°F). January and February are the chilliest months (but everything’s relative).

Bike hotels in the Canary Islands

As a popular winter and summer sun destination, the Canary Islands are well set up for tourists.

Hotels that market themselves solely to cyclists are few and far between, but you can find our pick of the hotels for cyclists here: Tenerife , Gran Canaria and Lanzarote .

Bike rental in the Canary Islands

It’s easy to hire a bike on most of the Canary islands. This is particularly true of Tenerife, and you’ll find lots of hire shops in the southwest in particular. There are hire shops in Playa de las Américas, Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, El Medano, La Laguna, Puerto de la Cruz and more. Some will deliver all over the island.

In Gran Canaria, most bike hire shops are in Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés and Las Palmas, though there are several others on the island.

For cycle hire in Lanzarote, head to Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen or the La Santa area.

DIY or supported trip to the Canaries?

The choice is yours. You can arrange your own trip by doing a little planning ahead of time, or book an organised Canary Islands cycling tour where everything is laid on for you. A third option is to combine both, by travelling independently but booking some day trips led by local bike hire shops.

Be aware that many of the Canary Islands are quite rural and you won’t have reception everywhere. In our experience, there are often less shops and (open) restaurants than you’d find in mainland Europe, particularly if you’re cycling out of high season. If you haven’t got support, make sure you plan your ride nutrition and hydration particularly carefully.

What to bring on a Canary Islands cycling holiday

Though the Canaries are sunny even in winter, temperatures can be considerably lower at altitude. Each island varies, and in fact one side of an island will also feel very different from the other. This is the case in Tenerife, for example, where the north is noticeably cooler and wetter than the south.

Pack clothing that you usually find comfortable to cycle in during spring, plus additional layers for unexpected wet or chillier weather.

There’s no need to bring your bike as you can hire one locally, unless of course you want to. You might also want to pack accessories such as your own water bottle, helmet and lights, plus basic tools and a puncture repair kit.

Our packing lists might come in handy: road cycling packing list and gravel touring packing list .

Highway code and travel information

In the Canary Islands, you drive on the right hand side of the road, and operate the gearbox with your right hand. Speed limits range from 50 kilometres per hour (kph) in urban areas, to 100 kph in rural locations and 120 kph on motorways.

You can drive with a UK licence if it was issued by the mainland authority, and the drink-driving limit is 50mg alcohol per 100ml blood. This is less than in some parts of the UK, so do take care.

As ever, it’s a good idea to check current travel information before you book and travel. For UK visitors, the UK government travel information pages are here .

Final thoughts

This sun-kissed archipelago offers warm, dry weather all year round, and the larger islands are well set-up for cyclists in terms of hotels, hire shops and routes to ride.

Though some islands are more popular than others, which to go to really depends on whether you want perfect peace or to follow in the wheel tracks of your favourite professionals. As well as whether you’d prefer to tackle some serious climbs or stick to flatter terrain.

We hope you’ve found this guide helpful in understanding where the best cycling in the Canary Islands is for your needs.
