3D2N Da Lat Itinerary — A Magical Alpine Adventure in Southern Vietnam

dalat tour from ho chi minh

Explore this European-esque city tucked between the central highlands of Southern Vietnam — with aircon weather to boot!

Girl looking at valley on top of Lang Biang mountain peak - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

Da Lat is known for being many things — the City of Love, of Eternal Spring, of Flowers, of Pine Trees, of Poetry… not the credentials typically associated with Southeast Asian destinations. Fascinated, we set off to explore with high expectations and an open mind.

Having only been to Ho Chi Minh City and Ben Tre, I’ve always considered Southern Vietnam to be a land of vast tropical jungles, motorcycle-lined streets, and the infamous sweltering humidity.

I couldn’t be more wrong.

Da Lat City Skyline from Drone - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

So if you’re looking for a short weekend getaway filled with stunning views and eclectic art, here’s a three-day Da Lat itinerary, where you’ll explore one of the dreamiest Southern Vietnam towns.

Pre-trip Essentials

Girl checking into her flight at Changi Airport - Da Lat Itinerary

– Digital Vaccination Certificate — download via Notarise – Travel insurance — min. coverage of US$10,000 (~S$14,000) for Covid-19-related medical treatment – 4G SIM Card with unlimited data — pre-book and collect at Ho Chi Minh’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport – Airport transfer — pick up from Da Lat’s Lien Khuong Airport to your accommodation

How to Get to Da Lat?

Plane alley - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

Da Lat is pretty accessible from several cities in Southern Vietnam, with private charters and buses being popular options. But from Singapore, the most straightforward route would be to take one of the following options from Ho Chih Minh city:

Flight: one-hour flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Lien Khuong Airport, return tickets from ~S$67

Bus: 6–8 hour sleeper buses depart for Da Lat daily from ~S$16 . To maximise time, take an overnight bus so you have a full day upon arrival!

Private charter : For more flexibility in pick-up time and location, book a private charter from ~S$210 one-way

* Pro-tip: The best time to visit Da Lat is between December to March when the average rainfall is at its lowest.

Day 1: Arrival and Adventure in Da Lat

Check in to your da lat accommodation — crazy house.

Crazy House Da Lat Roof Top - Da Lat Itinerary

One of the most unique attractions to visit in Da Lat is Crazy House , which is also a guesthouse. Intrigued by the outrageous concept, we decided that the best way to kick-start the trip was to spend the night here!

Crazy House wide angle shot - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

The building looks right out of Hansel and Gretel, with winding staircases leading to secret alcoves and the roof. Its eccentric architecture is the brainchild of Vietnamese artist Dang Viet Nga, who felt so inspired after visiting Da Lat that she created this fantastical guesthouse. Her design process and sketches can be found on display upon entering the compound.

Bamboo Room in Crazy House Da Lat Guesthouse

We opted for the cosy Bamboo Room as it was the tamest out of all the options but even that felt creepy at night — yes, we’re scaredy cats. Fo r the braver souls, the animal-themed guestrooms are what Crazy House is known for. No two rooms are alike and the central animal statues are a cross between adorable and terrifying.

Crazy House Bear Room - Da Lat Itinerary

The house is also open to the public and unoccupied rooms are open to peer into. The house has several themed common areas such as an aquatic room and visitors are encouraged to roam around twisting stairs. So even if you don’t stay there, you can still drop by to check it out!

Entrance fee: from 20,000₫ (~S$1.20/pax), price varies on your height Cost of stay: From ~S$42/night Opening hours: 8:30AM – 7PM Address: 03 Đ. Huỳnh Thúc Kháng, Phường 4, Thành phố Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng 66115, Vietnam

Datanla High Rope Course and New Alpine Coaster

Girl holding onto zipline while looking at view of Datanla high rope course

If you think alpine forest adventures can only be found in Switzerland , think again.

Da Lat is surrounded by lush pine forests — making it nature’s playground. Unleash your inner child with the Datanla High Rope Course , a high elements obstacle course that’s built into the forest.

Datanla Alpine Coaster Ride - Da Lat Itinerary

There are seven levels of difficulty to choose from so it depends on your appetite for adventure.

Datanla High Rope Course - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

As someone who is okay with heights, I was surprised to find out that we have to complete it by ourselves — including clipping the hooks onto the line!

I triple-checked the safety out of paranoia before every zipline and had a case of jelly legs. Looking back, the satisfaction of completing the course and flying through the air is unparalleled.

Girl's POV on Datanla Alpine Coaster Trail - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

Walk up the main road and you’ll find the entrance to the Datanla New Alpine Coaster on the left. It’s the longest roller coaster trail in Asia, spanning 2.4km, and takes about 4 mins to complete at full speed! The speed can be controlled by the rider in the back seat so you can decide how much of a daredevil you want to be.

As a self-proclaimed adrenaline junkie, rocketing down at wind speed really had my heart racing in the best way! I was gripping the brakes at every sharp turn but thankfully, I managed to refrain from pulling it. 😬

Girl Sitting on Chair and Looking at Datanla Waterfall - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

After screaming your lungs out, there will be a mid-point stop where you have to get off the coaster tracks and switch carts. Here, you can choose to spend some time admiring the gorgeous Datanla Waterfall . With multiple legends and lore surrounding the falls, it has become known by locals as the ‘Meeting Place of Lovers’.

While zero lovers were found 😔, it’s a lovely photo stop to snap pictures before you complete the rest of the coaster trail!

Cost: ~S$27.10/pax for both attractions Opening hours: 8AM – 4PM, last entry at 1:45PM (High Rope Course); 7AM – 5PM, last entry at 4:30PM (Datanla New Alpine) Address: 01 Lê Đại Hành, Phường 1, Thành phố Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng, Vietnam

Dinner at Da Lat Night Market

Vietnamese Pizza grilled on fire at Da Lat Night Market - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

Exploring night markets are a must-do in Vietnam and the Da Lat Night Market is the best place for shopping and grabbing a bite. Put your bargaining skills to the test on the retail side of the market, where outerwear and knitwear are sold. My favourite purchase is a hand-knitted chicken beanie I copped for 100,000₫ (~S$6)

Da Lat Night Market Stalls Selling Strawberries and Vietnamese Pizza - Da Lat Itinerary

As for food, one of Da Lat’s most popular dishes is the Vietnamese Pizza. Grilled on the spot over a fire, it consists of rice paper, eggs, ham, dried shrimp, sweet chilli, and mayo — all for 25,000₫/piece!

Strawberry and drink stall at Da Lat night market - Da Lat Itinerary

Da Lat is also known for its many strawberry farms so you will find affordable fresh strawberries sold everywhere in the market. There are also stalls selling boxed strawberries you can take home as souvenirs.

Opening hours: 6PM – 7AM Address: 6b Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai, Phường 1, Thành phố Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng 690000, Vietnam

* Pro-tip : Eat strawberries the local way w ith a combination of fish sauce and shrimp powder!

Maze Bar 100 Roof Cafe Shop Front - Da Lat Itinerary

Imagine a haunted-house-slash-escape room where every corner is carved and painted in a bizarre and unique style. A lso known as the 100 Roof Cafe , this unsuspecting bar is actually home to a huge labyrint h of themed floors and quirky decor — r eminiscent of the Crazy House.

Maze Bar Interior - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

The objective is to explore the different rooms and find your way to the secret garden on the roof. There are some areas that might require you to crouch down and enter, so if you’re vertically blessed remember to watch your head!

*Note: There won’t be any staff stationed within the maze so you have to find the way out!

Mojitos at Maze Bar Da Lat - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

There is no entry charge but you’ll need to order a drink before you enter. We ordered the Mojito (60,000₫) and the Whiskey Coke (70,000₫) before descending into the basement to start.

Girl in front of Maze Bar Octopus Decor

Wandering around the caverns transports you into an alternate universe. There are also plenty of seats on each floor to lounge and take break s. We spent a good 30 mins finding our way through the different floors before relishing our success on the roof.

Opening hours: 2:30PM – 11PM Address: 57 Phan Bội Châu, Phường 1, Thành phố Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng, Vietnam

Day 2: Exploring Central Da Lat

Lang biang mountain.

Lang Biang Mountain Peak Lookout Point - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

A great hiking spot here is Lang Biang Mountain , also known as the ‘Roof of Da Lat’ as it’s the tallest mountain in the ar ea. The trail leading to the peak begins right before the entrance gate. Take a right and you’ll find a dirt path leading into the forest. The 4.5 km trek takes under two hours to complete and entry costs ~20,000₫/pax.

Liang Biang Jeep Shuttle Transfer at Entrance Da Lat - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

Alternatively, you can reach the peak within 15 minutes from the entrance by taking a two-way jeep shuttle (100,000₫/pax). Shuttles typically wait till passengers fill the six seats before making an ascent.

Da Lat is also known as the City of Eternal Spring — probably because it’s home to 300 different flower species! Carve out some time in your Da Lat itinerary to drop by and admire the beautiful blooms.

Girl standing amidst flowers at Da lat Flower Park - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

Coffee Break at Cabin in the Woods

Girl sitting at Cabin in the Woods Cafe, Da Lat - Da Lat Itinerary

A Da Lat local recommended this hidden gem, so we had to drop in for a caffeine fix.

Located down a narrow dirt road, we were surprised to find a charming cafe tucked behind a corner. We recommend sitting on the deck at Cabin in the Woods as the view is absolutely gorgeous, really taking ‘al-fresco’ dining to the next level.

Mountain view from Cabin in the Woods Cafe Da Lat - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

We tried The Cabin Coffee (65,000₫) and Tra Vai Hoa Nhai (60,000₫) which is an Iced Lychee Tea, recharging us after a long day of sightseeing.

While admiring the view, we were joined by a few furry friends 🐕 — who gave us puppy-dog eyes while eyeing our food. Hearts were weakened and a few pieces of hot dogs were gladly sacrificed.

Noodles, coffee and tea at Cabin by the Woods Cafe Da Lat - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

As the food menu is limited, this cafe would better suit those looking for a light bite before heading off to their next location. Nonetheless , it’s s till a great place for a mid-day caffeine refuel!

Cost:  From 50,000₫ (~S$2.95) Opening hours: 7AM – 8PM Address: 2 Đường Phù Đổng Thiên Vương, Phường 8, Thành phố Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng, Vietnam

*Pro-tip : Renting a scooter or taking a Grab bike will make it more convenient to reach the cafe as the road is extremely narrow.

Linh Phuoc Pagoda

Linh Phuoc Pagoda Entrance - Da Lat Itinerary

One of the most beautiful and artistically crafted temples we encountered in Da Lat is the Linh Phuoc Pagoda . The grounds are split into different sections, dedicated to the Buddha and the Goddess of Mercy.

Close up of Linh Phuoc Pagoda - Da Lat Itinerary

Completely covered in glass, ceramic, and porcelain pieces, this Buddhist temple’s colourful style might also remind you of Gaudi’s mosaics in Barcelona .

Girl standing in front of dragon sculpture at Linh Phuoc Pagoda Da La

Also known as the Dragon Pagoda, the grounds is home to a 49m-long dragon sculpture that is covered in recycled beer bottles from Hoi An!

There’s also an entire basement dedicated to the 18 Levels of Hell, similar to Singapore’s Haw Par Villa, but an underground version without the Tiger Balm branding 🤪

Entrance fee: Free Opening hours: 7AM – 5PM Address: Trai Mat, Thành phố Đà Lạt, Lam Dong, Vietnam

Sunset at Cafe Túi Mơ To

Girl entering the entrance to Cafe Tui Mo To Da Lat - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

Cafe Tui Mo To is a crowd’s favourite and overlooks Da Lat city. Only a 10-minute drive away from Linh Phuoc Pagoda, the compound is adorned with fairy lights and daisy bushes. The laid-back atmosphere of the cafe made it a relaxing way to end a long day of sightseeing.

Girls enjoying tea break at Cafe Tui Mo To - Da Lat Itinerary

The cafe has a variety of artisanal drinks and desserts to choose from 45,000₫. We tried the hot cacao (60,000₫) and the iced tra vai cam d au , a sweet lychee tea ( 65,000₫), which was refreshing after a long day exploring Da Lat.

Cafe Tui Mo To Indoor Seating in Da Lat - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

There are multiple seating options, with each room having a different vibe. The indoor greenhouse room holds a certain tranquillity, so much so that we spotted a sleeping customer!

Cost:  From 45,000₫ (~S$2.65) Opening hours: 7:45AM – 9:45PM (Mon – Sat), 7:45AM – 10PM (Sun) Address: hẻm 31 Sào Nam, Phường 11, Thành phố Đà Lạt, Lâm Đồng 66118, Vietnam

Day 3: Da Lat’s Tranquil Nature

Kayaking tour at tuyền lâm lake.

Dalat Tuyen Lam Lake Kayaking Tour at Sunrise - Things to do in Da Lat

This day begins at 5AM because we’ll be catching the sunrise at Tuyền Lâm Lake on a kayak! We decided to go for t he earliest slot, which made us the first o nes on the lake — even before the fishing boats!

Dalat Tuyen Lam Lake Drone Shot - Things to do in Southern Vietnam

The early morning surprised us with still waters that reflected the entire sky and we barely broke a sweat while paddling the boat. Our eyes were blessed with misty mountains and we were dazzled by how quiet and peaceful the lake was. We spent an hour exploring the lake on our own before our guide led us to the next stop.

*Pro-tip: Pack a waterproof windbreaker to stay warm throughout the tour as it gets quite chilly in the morning.

Girl standing amidst pine trees at Lux Camp Da Lat - Da Lat Itinerary

We took a mid-way pit stop at Lux Camp Da Lat , where we enjoyed instant noodles and a steaming cup of traditional Vietnamese coffee. Despite feeling freezing cold in the forest (my bottoms were soaked), it felt like we were the only people to exist in this corner of the universe — a core memory for sure!

Cost: ~S$22.50/pax for 3hr Kayak Tour Tour timings: 5AM, 8AM, 2:30PM Meeting point: Hoa Cam Tu Cau, Ward 3, Da Lat, Vietnam

*Note: A round-trip transfer can be arranged with directly the operator for S$50.

Pongour Waterfall

Man standing in front of Pongour Waterfall Da Lat - Things to do in Da Lat

Pongour Waterfalls ha s earned the title of being one of the most beautiful attractions in Southern Vietnam and it’s not hard to see why.

Known as the Seven Cascading Waterfalls, Pongour is made of seven-tiered rock terraces that cause the flowing water to have a silky-like illusion. Located 1.5 hours outside Da Lat city centre, we suggest hiring a private charter or renting a scooter to chase these magnificent waterfalls.

Entrance fee: 20,000₫ (~S$1.15/pax) Opening hours: 8AM – 6PM Address: Đức Trọng District, Lam Dong, Vietnam

* Pro-tip : The weather can get quite warm in the afternoo n so take a dip and swim und er one of the smaller falls!

Coffee at CỘI kissa

Cafe Coi Kissa Interior mantel-place - Things to do in Da Lat

Stepping foot into CỘI kissa , we were instantly transported into the roaring twenties. The jazz-themed cafe has vintage furniture and a turntable playing music in the corner, creating a cosy yet nostalgic atmosphere.

Waffles and traditional Vietnamese egg coffee at cafe Coi Kissa - Things to do in Da Lat

And of course, we couldn’t leave Da Lat without trying Vietnamese egg coffee (6 5,000₫). While originally a Northern Vietnam delicacy, it’s also popular among locals in the So uth for it s smooth and creamy texture.

Getting around Da Lat

Man driving on the street of Da Lat - Things to do in Da Lat

Public transport isn’t very accessible in Da Lat so here are some alternatives to ensure your itinerary runs smoothly.

Grab:  This option is the most convenient and affordable option. An average trip of 10 mins costs around 25,000₫ (~S$1.50)

Car charter: Grab isn’t as readily available outside the city centre. Thus, we hired a private car for the day to take us to areas out of the city. We opted for the 8-hour service but an additional surcharge is available for 100,000₫/hour.

Scooter rentals: available at ~S$7/day and is useful for weaving through the narrow alleys.

Da Lat Cabin in the Woods Drone Shot of Diners Enjoying Food - Da Lat Guide

The three days spent exploring Da Lat felt nothing short of a fairytale adventure and we’ve barely scratched the surface. Da Lat really is an underrated city with hidden gems waiting to be unearthed.

A personal favourite was the sunrise kayak at Lake Tuyen Lam. As someone who only wakes up after the sun is high up in the sky, I didn’t expect to feel so recharged by the breathtaking view.🤩 Da Lat also unearthed my love of quirky things. From chicken hats to fishes with glowing red eyes, I fully embraced Da Lat for all its eccentricity.

After all, it’s part of its charm, isn’t it?

Ho chi minh to Dalat

How to Go from Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat

After the sweltering heat of Ho Chi Minh City, Dalat will come as a bit of a relief.  This ex-French hill station city has been used for decades as a cool retreat in the hills.   We actually found it just plain cold!  But that was good for a while.  Dalat is also an adventure capital on the route north, and it’s a great place to come for a few days.  And it’s easy to get to, although it could take you up to a full day to get there, but it’s a pleasant enough trip.  Here’s our guide on how to go from Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat.

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN COMPENSATED AND AFFILIATE LINKS MORE INFORMATION IN  OUR DISCLAIMER

Sleeper Bus Icon

The Easiest Way from Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat

The sleeper bus from Ho Chi Minh to Dalat is the easiest way to travel this route. You can book and prepay for seats here to guarantee your trip.

Where is Dalat?

Dalat is in the south of Vietnam’s Central Highlands and sits on the Langiban Plateau and while nearly 50% of the city of Ho Chi Minh lies at just one meter above sea level, Dalat is at an altitude of 1500 meters (4921 feet) above sea level.  It is about 300 kilometers (186 miles) from Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat.

Going from Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat

There are five ways that you can go from Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat, the quickest will take just under 3 hours, and the longest about 9 hours.  Many of the overland routes travel overnight so you can (potentially) get a free night’s accommodation, but likely not much sleep.  Before you decide on the transport method, here are the details of all the different ways to go to Dalat from Ho Chi Minh City.

How to get to Dalat from Ho Chi Minh City

In deciding how to travel between HCMC and Dalat, you’ll first need to decide if you want to travel during the day or at night.  This can be a particularly scenic route, (if you’re taking a private transfer, the slightly longer route, is prettier), but it depends on what you want to spend your time doing in Vietnam.  I’ll start with the most popular way to travel from Saigon (Ho Chi Minh) to Dalat.  The Sleeper Bus.

Taking the Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat Sleeper Bus

This is the most popular (and cheapest) way to go to Dalat from Ho Chi Minh City and it takes about 8 hours to get there using this mode of transport.  And while I say sleeper bus, you can actually take daytime buses as well.

As with all Vietnam buses that travel long distances, they tend to depart and arrive from their own offices, rather than a specific bus station, but on this route most leave from near Pham Ngu Lao in Ho Chi Minh City.   However, all of them arrive some distance outside the center of Dalat.

Use 12GoAsia to check where the buses both leave from and arrive here.

The first bus of the day leaves Ho Chi Minh City at midnight and arrives in Dalat at 08:00.  It’s also the last bus of the day, well, that one leaves two minutes before midnight.  But there are some much more sensibly timed buses – leaving for instance at 08:30 and arriving in Dalat at 16:40 if you want a daytime trip.  You’ll still get the Vietnamese sleeper seats, you’ll just travel during the day.

If you want to save on accommodation then evening buses run from up until midnight.  Some of the buses timetabled on this route run as “Seated” buses, rather than sleeper buses, so check your booking carefully, if you want to lie down, or a least recline on the way.

Check the times and book tickets for the Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat buses here.

Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat Minivan

You can shave a bit of time off that 8 hour trip by taking a minivan.  You might sacrifice a little comfort though.  Minivans from HCMC to Dalat take a little over 6 hours, and you’ll also need to get to the station where they leave from in HCMC.

Book a minivan from Ho Chi Minh to Dalat here.

The minivans are sometimes called “limo vans” and you will actually find some of them leave directly from Phan Ngu Lao – they’re usually only a couple of dollars more expensive than the sleeper buses and you can check the departure times here.

Similar to the buses that run this route, they may not arrive exactly where you want to be in Dalat, but you can easily pick up a Grab in Dalat to get you to where you’re going.  Dalat is well serviced by Grab and it’s cheap to get around. (Note that Grab in Vietnam is charges a 4% foreign card fee, so you might want to opt for paying cash)

Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat Flight

The quickest way to go from Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat is to fly.  Bear in mind, however, that you’ll have to get to the airport and back at both ends of the journey.  Flights to Dalat from Ho Chi Minh depart from the main international airport (SAI), about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) from downtown HCMC.  (My guide is here on how to go from HCMC to the Airport or book an airport transfer from HCMC to SAI airport here.

There are usually 5 flights a day from SAI to DLI.

The first flight of the day from Ho Chi Minh to Dalat is at 07:00 and the last flight of the day to Dalat from Ho Chi Minh City is at 17:25.

Check the times and prices of flights to Dalat from Ho Chi Minh City here.

You’ll fly into Lien Khuong Airport aka Dalat Airport aka DLI.  It’s a 55 minute flight.  (and usually, it’s pretty expensive for the time spent in the air, you can check the flight prices here .).  Dalat Airport is about 45 minutes by taxi from the city center of Dalat.  You can take the airport bus too, which takes about an hour, but I figure if you’re shelling out for a flight you’re in a hurry, so book your transfer from the airport too , it’ll cost around US$13 for the transfer but will get you right where you want to go.

Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat Train + Bus

I’m detailing this option because I love taking trains in Vietnam, not because I think this is a particularly good way to travel on this particular route.  It’s a little bit convoluted.  (Strike that, it’s painful, but I’ve started, so…)  If you want to take the train from Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat, then you’ll need to do the following:

Ho Chi Minh to Nha Trang Train

First, you need to get the train (and you’ll need to prebook the train here ) to Nha Trang from Ho Chi Minh City.  There are both daytime and night trains, but pick your time carefully, as you could end up arriving in Nha Trang at 02:30, which will NOT coincide with a bus from Nha Trang to Dalat!

The train from Ho Chi Minh City to Nha Trang usually takes just over 7 hours, although some take as long as 8 hours and 20 minutes.

Nha Trang Railway Station to Nha Trang Southern Bus Station

See you’re reading this and already thinking this is a mistake.  I’ll agree with you.  This is not a good way to go to Dalat from Ho Chi Minh City.  It’s 5.7 kilometers (3.5 miles) between the two stations.  The only sensible way to do this is to get a Grab.

Nha Trang to Dalat Bus

Most, if not all of the buses from Nha Trang to Dalat leave from the Nha Trang Southern Bus station, that you just took the Grab to above. The first bus of the day is at 00:25 and the last bus to Dalat from Nha Trang is at 18:00.  It’s going to take you two hours and 30 minutes to do this part of the route (and you can get bus tickets here ).

Dalat Bus Station to Dalat City Center

Honestly, I’m exhausted even thinking about this.  But once you’ve arrived at the Dalat Bus station you need to get into Dalat City Center or wherever you’re staying.  Most of the buses that arrive in Dalat arrive about 2.5 kilometers (1.6 miles) from Dalat Center.  So you’ll need to take a Grab or walk to get where you’re going.

Ho Chi Minh City to Dalat Private Transfer

If you’ve got the money for a private transfer, then it’s going to take you about 6 hours to do this trip, but you’ll also get to take the scenic route and take a few stops along the way.  Prices for private transfers between Ho Chi Minh City and Dalat are here .

You can decide what you want to stop off and see on the way, Tom of Vietnam Coracle wrote about this route (and although he rides this on a motorbike you can still see the scenic options available)

Hi There, I’m going to HCM next month, just wondering that can we get the tickets for the Phuong Trang bus at any travel agencies, i mean i heard that the travel agency did sell the ticket for the intercity trip as well, but am not sure if the bus is the agency’s bus or it can be the Phuong Trang bus as well. Or I need to go to Phuong Trang office only for the ticket?

dalattrip, 9 years ago Reply

Ho Noon, you should go to Phuong Trang office for purchasing the bus tickets with saving. Because, some travel agencies will charge you some extra fees.

Hi Another question please –

hello there.. i will be landing in HCHM in mid november at about 9am.. I would to take a bus from the airport to the bus station to take a bus to dalat.. how do I take a bus to the bus station.. and I was recommended to stay in mozjo inn while in dalat.. what is the distance from mozjo inn to dormaine de marie church as I am intending to attend the morning mass there.. is it safe to walk early in the morning or what do you recommend..

Hi Teresa, For saving, you can catch the bus from Tan Son Nhat Airport (International HCMC’s airport). You should ask the ticket seller (on bus) drop you off Ben Thanh station. (The bus details as Bus trip: 20 minutes/trip – Duration: 40 minutes – First trip: 06:00AM – Last trip: 06:00PM – Kind of bus: 55 seats). Then from Ben Thanh bus station, you just walk 0,4km to Phuong Trang Bus office (72 De Tham street) for getting ticket to Dalat. It’s easy and saving budget. Domaine De Marie Church is rather far from center. I think if you prefer to have the morning mass, you should have The Dalat Cathedral (Also called the Cock Church) located in center. You can book some hotel near it such as Dalat Plaza Best Western Hotel (just 0,2km) or Du Parc Hotel Dalat (side by side). Additionally, this church located in the safety road comparing with Domaine De Marie for your morning mass.

hello there.. thank you so much for your help.. truly appreciate it.. will check out the hotel and time of mass in the cathedral as you mentioned on google.. thanks once again..

Hi Dalat Trip,

Thanks for the useful information. I am however interested to travel to Da Lat by rail from HCMC. I understand that the nearest railway station to Da Lat is Thap Cham Station, but where can I continue my journey to Da Lat by bus/van from Thap Cham town? At the railway station itself or other place?

Also, are the train tickets normally available for purchase a day before departure at Sai Gon Railway Station?

Thanks in advance for your kind advice.

Regards, PP Benham

Hi PP Benham, Thank for your queries, We are pleased to make the clarify as follows: 1. From Thap Cham Train Station, you can stand in front of it and catch the minivan or minibus to go to Dalat. However, this minibus/minivan is not recommended, it’s not good for foreigners. 2. It’s better you should go to Nha Trang Train Station, then book the bus (high quality & big bus, recommended Phuong Trang bus) to go to Dalat, they have the pick-up & transfer service complimentary as well. 3. Depending on your travel period. You can purchase a day before departure if your date is not fallen in Weekends or Public Holidays.

Thanks for the valuable information. My friends and I have had many trips to Asia, especially Southeast Asia, and would not mind using minibuses or vans for a 3-hour journey. Do you happen to know the timing of the minibuses/vans?

Anyway, I wish to travel by rail from HCMC to Thap Cham on July 11, 2013, and I think it is not a public holiday or eve of it, right? And how much do train tickets cost, approximately?

Thanks again in advance for your help.

Kind regards, Benham and friends

Hi PP Benham, We are pleased to make the clarify of your queries as follows: 1. Bay Cao minivan departure at 08:00AM, 10:00AM, 01:00PMfrom Phan Rang – Thap Cham. However, their shedule is not fixed and depend on the number of client. You can contact them at 0633823595. Please note that this transport supplier will pick-up along the way. It’s not good for foreigner, highly note. 2. About train time table & price, you can refer at following links http://www.vetau24h.com , Because they have many ranges & many kinds of train. It’s sorry that they have no support for English.

Hello! Could you please advise on the availability and timings of sleeping buses that would leave HCM on the night of 9th June to arrive in Dalat by morning? Also, how do I buy the bus tickets or check the bus schedules?

For arriving Dalat by morning, you should leave HCMC at 11:00PM, 11:30PM, 12:00AM, 12:30AM, 01:00AM. You should come the Phuong Trang bus office at 72 De Tham, Dist.1 for get the tickets. At present (04th June 2013), price is USD10.5/person/ticket/way or USD9.5/person/ticket/way. How to travel from Dalat to Ho Chi Minh

dalat tour from ho chi minh

Leave behind the Central Highlands and their emerald-green tea plantations for an experience of the big city by hopping from Dalat to Ho Chi Minh.

It’s a trip that loads of travelers moving through South Vietnam choose to make, taking you from a handsome hill town to the biggest metropolis in the country, where striking war museums and buzzing nightlife streets take over. About 142 miles separate the two towns, but quick flights and long-distance buses can help you cover it, so the journey should be a cinch to plan…

Dalat to Ho Chi Minh by Plane

A passenger airplane of Vietjet Air docking at Lien Khuong Airport (DLI) in Dalat, Vietnam.

Time – 45 minutes Price – From $29 Comfort – 5/5

There’s been a boom in the number of low-cost and regional airlines operating throughout Vietnam in the last 10-15 years. That’s had the effect of linking up oodles of midsized towns with the capital in Hanoi and the sprawling metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City in the south. And so it is with Dalat, which now enjoys a whopping nine daily connections to erstwhile Saigon. As you’ll see, they offer a quick, reliable, and very affordable ticket to the big city…

There are just two airlines to know about, at least for now. You can fly with the national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines, or the more budget-orientated VietJet Air. Truth be told, there’s really not all that much difference between them. Even the flag carrier doesn’t offer free checked baggage as standard, and airfare on both is relatively similar. Talking of which, you’re looking at paying in the region of $29-60 for the base fare here, and around $10-15 more if you want to bring luggage.

Flying from Dalat to Ho Chi Minh City keeps things simple, and it’s actually pretty affordable, thanks to high competition on the route from various airlines.

The flight is a fast one. It crosses a mere 145 miles of South Vietnam and takes less than an hour in most cases, sometimes even under 50 minutes from runway to runway. Of course, that’s not representative of the full journey time. You’ll need at least 1.5 hours at the airport to check in, plus extra time on transfers to and from the terminals on either side – it takes about 35 minutes to get from Dalat to the Lien Khuong Airport where the flight leaves from, and usually 20-25 minutes to get from the Tan Son Nhat Airport to central Ho Chi Minh City.

VietJet Air and Vietnam Airlines planes in Tan Son Nhat International Airport

Departures are now neatly spread throughout the whole day. VietJet Air starts things off with an early-morning service at 7.35am, followed by other flights all morning and afternoon. The last departure of the day is with Vietnam Airlines at around 8.50pm. You can compare and contrast all the various options and see the cost of airfare at a glance using 12GoAsia . We’d recommend booking domestic flight tickets like this at least 60 days in advance as prices can soar more than 100% in the days leading up to departure.

Dalat to Ho Chi Minh by Bus

Thanh Buoi sleeper interior

Time – 7 hours+ Price – From $14 per person Comfort – 3/5

There are more bus services linking Dalat to Ho Chi Minh City than you can shake a bag of Vietnamese Robusta coffee at. Yep, at last count, we saw nearly 70 individual departures. They’re shared throughout the day and the night and go almost every half an hour, so you can plan to leave the Central Highlands whenever suits you. Sadly, the drive is quite long – you’re looking at over seven hours in total, plus the 30 minutes or so you need to be at the station before boarding.

There are really two standout companies running bus services. By far the best-rated is Thanh Buoi. Sadly, they don’t have quite as many departure options as the lower-rated Phuong Trang, though they do cost a couple of dollars extra on average. Perhaps the main bonus of choosing a Thanh Buoi bus is the fact that they have two ticket classes, one that’s a touch more expensive but promises extra space to spread out. All vehicles on this route, no matter the company, will be large coaches with lay-flat beds, booth seating, and air conditioning.

Buses aren’t the comfiest way to travel, but they’re a great bang for your buck and have departure times spread throughout the whole day and night.

The route between Dalat and Ho Chi Minh City takes you across the very midriff of South Vietnam. It’s replete with spectacular views, particularly towards the start of the journey. They include the pine-studded Central Highlands around Dalat itself and then the low-lying hills that fringe Lam Dong Province. Sadly, bus drivers have a bit of a reputation for speedy driving and horn beeping, so these are rarely the most pleasant of trips to make.

Ta Nung Pass in Da Lat City, Vietnam. The winding road in the distance is Da Lat city

They are cheap, though. Book in advance using a service like 12GoAsia and you can score tickets for as little as $14 per person. Bear in mind that that’s for a ride straight to the heart of the city. Flights get you to the airport, but buses cruise straight into well-connected terminals like Ho Chi Minh ThanhBuoi or Mien Dong Moi, which are great for access to central hotels or even onward bus connections to places like the Mekong Delta.

Dalat to Ho Chi Minh by Minivan

dalat tour from ho chi minh

Time – 6 hours Price – $16 Comfort – 4/5

Smaller buses, known as limo vans or minivans, offer a fine driving alternative to the big coaches. There are only one or two in the day running from Dalat to Ho Chi Minh City, and they only take up to nine people at once. That means there’s often hefty competition for space, so be sure to book your ride as early as you can – it’s possible to do it at least 60 days in advance of travel using 12GoAsia .

Thanks to their limited capacity, the limo vans are on a whole other comfort level than most land transport options. You’ll score a fully upholstered seat with plenty of recline and a ton of legroom. There also shouldn’t be too much hanging around at the station before you get driving since there aren’t so many passengers to wait for. These days, VIP 9 Express is the highest-rated company offering these sorts of buses on the route. They leave from a designated spot in central Dalat and arrive at a designated spot in downtown Ho Chi Minh City.

Dalat to Ho Chi Minh by Taxi

Dalat to Ho Chi Minh by Taxi

Time – 5h20+ Price – $120+ Comfort – 4/5

Taking a taxi from Dalat to Ho Chi Minh City still means you’ll need to cover the six hours and 192 miles on the road to get from A to B. But you’ll be doing all that in the comfiest way possible. Just think; Your very own chauffeured car, lots of leg room, air conditioning that you can set however you like it, and toilet breaks on demand along the way. Traveling by road hardly gets better than this, particularly on the scenic QL20 highway through the lush green highlands of South Vietnam!

A taxi takes between five and six hours to cruise south to HCMC, bringing the added benefits of a drop-off and pick-up at a location you nominate.

The total journey time here is still pretty high – think between five and six hours in most cases. However, there’s way less faffing around with taxis compared to buses. You won’t have to wait for other passengers, and there aren’t any extra stops en route. You’ll be collected from the door of your hotel in Dalat nice and fresh and be dropped off at a nominated spot in HCMC later in the day, hopefully still feeling nice and fresh. Easy. Adding to that is the fact that you can organize taxis to leave whenever you want to leave, so there’s no need to navigate confusing bus timetables.

Those bonuses come with a price tag. You’re looking at paying at least $122 for a private ride to the big city. Share that with four other people and it’s going to be a total of just over $30 per person, which is actually a touch more than the cheapest flights without bags (food for thought). These days, don’t haggle with drivers on the ground. Instead, use 12GoAsia to compare all the taxi offerings and reserve yours fully online.

Dalat is a breezy highland escape where you’ll spend days hopping between waterfalls, hiking rice paddies, and tasting artisan Vietnamese coffee. Ho Chi Minh City is a whole other ball game. The largest metropolis in the country and one of the largest in Southeast Asia as a whole, it’s abuzz with shopping, nightlife, monuments, and markets.

You can string Dalat and Ho Chi Minh together by flying, on long-distance buses, or on taxis, so there are plenty of transport options to suit most budgets.

What to expect when visiting Ho Chi Minh

Ho Chi Minh is Vietnam’s largest and probably busiest metropolis. Formerly called Saigon, the city pulsates with energy and organised chaos. Its streets are packed with motorcycles day in and day out, we absolutely have no idea how everyone manages not to bump into each other!

Don’t miss a visit to the War Remnants Museum and Central Post Office, one of the oldest buildings in Ho Chi Minh . Shop (and prepare to haggle) at Ben Thanh Market, and explore the nearby Cu Chi Tunnels. When its bustling streets become too much, know that you can always find solace in one of its many cosy coffee shops.

Lake in Hanoi Vietnam

We booked Thinh Phat limousine from DaLat to HCM and the experience was not good. The driver spoke limited English which would have been fine until we reached HCM and he beckoned we follow other customers onto another mini van about 1h out of the city. This mini van driver then drove us to the airport (a random road, not even the terminal) where we ended up arguing (again limited English) that we expected to be dropped off in district 1 as the paid for ticket described. In the end after he removed our bags we had to get an additional Grab to district 1. In total with this stressful delay from leaving DaLat to arriving in district 1 HCM it took us 9hours so I would recommend there is no benefit booking Thinh Phat!!!!

Hello Melanie, I’m very sorry to hear about your experience with Thinh Phat. It’s already quite a long drive and there is nothing more annoying than ending up in an argument with the driver after such a long drive. I directly removed this company from the possible schedules as I don’t think they offer any benefit over other companies after reading your review. Thanks a lot for sharing this feedback. At least we can now inform other travellers about your bad experience with this company. Hope you still enjoyed your stay in Ho Chi Minh!

Follow My Cheap Yet Epic Trail Across Vietnam And Cambodia By Train, Bus, Boat, And Bike

  • Take a food-centric journey through the bustling city of Hanoi and explore the chaotic Old Quarter for a crash course in all things Vietnam. Don't miss the chance to try the famous Bun Cha Huong Lien, a Hanoi specialty.
  • Escape the touristy Ha Long Bay and opt for a bike tour to Lac Village near the Laotian border. Immerse yourself in a green, mountainous paradise of rice paddies and water buffalo, and indulge in the local culture, karaoke parties, and grilled mystery meats.
  • Find peace and solitude at Tam Thanh Beach, a quiet beach town with friendly locals and minimal tourists. Enjoy delicious seafood, magical sunset walks, and the company of playful dogs and tiny shimmering crabs. Don't miss the chance to explore the Mekong River and visit the indigenous Cham community in Chau Doc before ending the journey in Phnom Penh and exploring the world-famous Angkor Wat in Siem Reap.

The beautiful countries of Southeast Asia tend to take hold of certain travelers' wanderlust and never let go, as each destination's wonders embody deep history and ever-evolving culture and art across an awe-inspiring landscape. Following a quick visit to Thailand with a side trip to Siem Reap, Cambodia, in 2019, I vowed to return. I finally made this dream a reality with an ambition for the epic despite being a budget traveler.

Although the region is known to be quite affordable, it is worth taking some budget notes for Cambodia . This time, I would start from Vietnam's northern capital Hanoi and slowly traverse the entire country by train and bus to its southern border with Cambodia, where I would then make my triumphant return via speedboat up the majestic Mekong River.

Ready to follow in my footsteps? Traveling by train, boat, and bus, discover the adventures on this Vietnam to Cambodia travel itinerary, which features ten unique stops that showcase these countries' culinary, cultural, historic, and natural jewels.

A Bourdain-Inspired Start In Hanoi

The sprawling northern capital of over 5 million inhabitants is best explored by eating one's way across it.

Hanoi, beloved by travelers everywhere , is a perfect crash course in all things Vietnam. Like most first-time visitors, I based myself near the wonderfully chaotic Old Quarter where aging French architecture elegantly blending with Vietnamese verdure serves as the center of the action.

As an avid follower of Anthony Bourdain, the first thing on the list was visiting Bun Cha Huong Lien , where Bourdain and US President Barack Obama shared a meal . Thus began my love of the Hanoi specialty Bun Cha , along with a gluttonous assault on the steamy food stalls lining the hive-like metropolis' cramped side streets and alleys where the vibrant sights, smells, and sounds of Vietnam sunk deep into my skin.

  • Best Bun Cha for ~$1.44: No name or map listing exists; follow this pin to find my favorite Bun Cha on Vong Duc Street. A woman crouched upon the sidewalk in classic Vietnamese fashion slinging raw meat onto a tiny grill means it is the right place.
  • Transport from Noi Bai airport : For ~ $1.85, bright orange bus 86 arrives in Hanoi's Old Quarter within an hour.
  • Where to stay: Cheap accommodation is plentiful; staying near the southern half of Hoan Kiem Lake provided a peaceful escape from the Old Quarter's chaos.

The most budget-friendly flights I found to Hanoi were sometimes below $400 via LAX with China Airlines.

I Skipped Ha Long Bay For Mountains And Rice Fields

Lac village is home to betel-nut-chewing ethnic thais living in traditional stilt houses with bamboo floors.

Ha Long Bay is famous for many reasons , so I initially saw it as a must for a first visit to Vietnam. Aside from its high cost, I was more in the mood to take a path less traveled, so I took this bike tour to a small village near the Laotian border instead.

In no time, I found myself coasting through a green, mountainous paradise of rice paddies and water buffalo before getting an inside look at one of the stilt houses where its elderly, red-mouthed resident offered me some locally cherished betel nut .

During a free-roam hour in the village, I was abruptly roped into a karaoke party (a way of life in Vietnam) where some sang their hearts out, while the rest fervently bombarded me with tiny cups of the local rice wine and a lineup of grilled mystery meats from the table.

  • Location: In the Mai Chau District , 85 miles southwest of Hanoi
  • Tour from Hanoi: $40/person on Tripadvisor
  • Highlights: biking past rice paddies and water buffalo, sociable locals, true cultural immersion

Peaceful Solitude At Tam Thanh Beach

Crabs, friendly pups, geckos, and playing children stand in for tourists in this tiny beach town.

Leaving Hanoi, I was in the mood for a quiet beach escape and happened to stumble upon Tam Thanh Beach , just outside the town of Tam Ky . Along the way, I somewhat regrettably skipped the historic city of Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that other travelers I met raved about.

Tourists and grandiose storefronts were not seen at Tam Thanh Beach, only small pockets of locals exercising on the beach or setting off to sail for fishing. After delicious seafood from little family restaurants lining the beach, I would take magical sunset walks accompanied by a friendly pack of dogs as the blue tides swept over hordes of tiny shimmering crabs and I felt a new level of peace.

Getting here from Hanoi was a two-part journey with a stop in Da Nang , which serves as a destination on its own.

  • Bus from Hanoi to Da Nang: ~13–17 hours, sleeper bus options start at $17
  • Train from Da Nang to Tam Ky: ~1.5 hours, starting at $6.87/seat
  • Where to stay: Tam Thanh Natural Beach Resort for ~$15/night was amazing, but availability is inconsistent. Most visitors stay at Tam Thanh Beach Resort & Spa .

Small towns like this are where having a SIM card with data for online translator use is highly valuable.

From Sleepy Sands To Towers In Tuy Hoa

This humble coastal city holds an architectural crown jewel: the nghinh phong tower.

With the only goal of continuing south, I was enticed by Tuy Hoa for having big-city amenities while seeming to maintain the low-key vibe of Tam Ky. I then hopped on a train for a gorgeous ride through Vietnam's countryside of lotus flowers, buffalo, and soaring cranes.

This town felt endearingly "normal" compared to tourist hot spots like Hanoi, aside from the unexpected, sci-fi-esque Nghinh Phong Tower that looms above on beachside walks.

  • Train from Tam Ky to Tuy Hoa: ~6 hours, starting at ~$11/seat
  • Where to stay: Coralina Hotel for ~$10/night (prices vary with the season)
  • Highlights: Award-winning Nghinh Phong Tower , public Tuy Hoa Beach , lavish karaoke spots , and late-night eats at market stalls

A Change Of Pace In The Mountains Of Dalat

Dalat, the picturesque "honeymoon capital" for locals, was a perfect pit stop in my southern sprint.

I became eager to reach the Cambodian chapter of my trip, and bus routes to Hanoi's southern counterpart, Ho Chi Minh City, were the fastest way. Cool, mountainous Dalat was a worthy break from the road and temporary salvation from lowland humidity.

Glimpses of the fairytalelike landscape and its colorful pagodas that make it so popular brought a tinge of regret that I left so soon, but I was able to indulge in the best bowl of pho I had ever had before I was gone.

  • Best pho: Quán Ph Thng -Na
  • Bus from Tuy Hoa to Dalat: The 5-hour ride typically costs $11-$13
  • Where to stay: awesome views from Min Nhit i 2 Hotel for $9/night (as always in Vietnam, prices can double when demand is high)

Return To City Life In Ho Chi Minh City

Also known as saigon, vietnam's most populous city of around 9.3 million offers endless exploration.

The road to Ho Chi Minh City - "the Pearl of the Far East" with tons of things to do - continued. Another 7-hour bus ride later, I was unwittingly tossed into the stampede of nightclub hoppers and fire-breathing street performers that is Bui Vien Street after not researching the neighborhood of my hotel.

Partying backpacker hubs are usually not my kind of scene, but in the end, I found it to be a charming example of when a harmonious balance of tourists and local culture prevails against over-tourism.

  • Bus from Dalat to Ho Chi Minh City: Sleeper buses start as low as $15 for the 7-8 hour trip.
  • Where to stay: Meraki 198 Bui Vien for $13/night
  • Highlights: Historical sites of "the American War" like the Cu Chi Tunnels or War Remnants Museum

Chau Doc To Phnom Penh By Boat

This quiet port town serves as a gateway to the mekong river and indigenous cham culture.

I had little time for exploration in Chau Doc due to my mission on the mighty Mekong, but a brief view into quiet, local life in a small river town felt like enough of a treat. I would certainly encourage anyone in the area to spend time in its biodiverse forests, floating villages, and temples or visit the local Cham community .

Taking in the vast landscapes and riverside villages by boat served as a real-time highlight reel of Southeast Asia that was truly unforgettable, and I can't recommend this route enough.

  • Bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Chau Doc: ~6 hours
  • Where to stay: Dong Bao Hotel An Giang - $11/night
  • Mekong River trip to Phnom Penh: The 5.5-hour ride includes visa processing at the border for $35, just bring a passport and cash.

A tragic history of war and genocide contrasts with the vivaciousness of Cambodia's capital city

After arriving ashore at Phnom Penh's lively riverside, I could simply walk to my hotel and then dive right into tons of restaurants, museums, markets, and the Royal Palace nearby.

As easy as it is to be whisked away by laughs and smiles in the streets, my focus was to learn more about the devastating mid-70s genocide on behalf of the Khmer Rouge, which the country is still recovering from today.

  • Where to stay: RS Guesthouse for ~$10/night (price fluctuations apply here also)
  • What to do: visit the Royal Palace , learn about Cambodia's tragic history at Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum or Choeung Ek Genocidal Center
  • What to eat: try Khmer Cuisine at David's Noodle or the renowned Russian Market

Exploring The Famed Angkor Wat In Siem Reap

Millions flock to what guinness world records lists as the world's largest religious structure (162.2 hectares).

If anyone visits Cambodia once, it is likely a foray into the world-famous Angkor Wat found in the rather small city of Siem Reap. The temple complex is just as mesmerizing in real life and truly taking it all in would require multiple visits.

Temple crawling in the scorching Cambodian sun can be very draining, so I felt lucky to always have Pub Street beckoning me over with some shade and a drink.

  • Bus from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap: ~ 6 hours, as low as $7
  • Outstanding private room w/AC deal: $11/night at Siem Reap Pub Hostel (I've stayed here three times)
  • Angkor Wat passes: 1, 3, or 7-day passes from $37-$72
  • Special gems: Dialogue is a sanctuary brewing some of the best coffee in Cambodia along with great food, a bar, and an overall awesome atmosphere; Kimleng Sang offers one-of-a-kind photography tours

I rented a bicycle from Butterfly Tours for $5/day to better explore Siem Reap and Angkor Wat.

Batty Bamboo Bonanza In Battambang

The voyage ends in battambang, the land of bamboo trains and bat caves.

I arrived in Cambodia's second-biggest city to immediately seek its near-defunct bamboo train operations . Darting past farmlands and flustered buffalo on rickety, wheeled bamboo platforms was an exhilarating reminder of why travel insurance exists, and I would do it every day if I could.

I took a great tour including the famous bat cave that millions of bats pour out of every day at dawn which is nestled just behind the somber Killing Caves of Phnom Sampeau . My long road from Hanoi deserved a bang of an ending, and Battambang delivered.

  • Bus from Siem Reap to Battambang: 3 hours with Virak Buntham for $11
  • Where to stay: as low as $7/night at Star Hotel
  • Bamboo train + bat cave + Killing Cave tour: $15/person on Tripadvisor
