Our background, history for youth, dam busters tour (germany).
Dam Busters Tour Germany.
TheDam Busters are forever etched in my mind, beginning from an early age. About six if I recollect.
Saw the movie with my Dad and was totally captivated by the bravery and achievement in the most difficult circumstances. When travelling on an aeroplane I often think of those brave souls. No air conditioning, no warmth, and in total darkness over hostile territory. It makes me feel in some way guilty to order a coffee or a sandwich. Most important me being able to travel on an aircraft in a free and democratic world is in part down to the sacrifices of those boys.

We can ( if not too late) take a leisurely walk (OR TAKE A CAB) 5 km (30 mins walk) to the actual Dam.
Note: there are no acceptable Hotels or Pensions with own private bath/wc near to the Dam . There is one Hotel 3 kms away, but £80.00 per person per night. Which means 20 minutes instead of 30 mins.
Dam Busters Tour Germany
non hurried morning and towards lunchtime we take a boat trip to include lunch along the Mohne Lake.
Afternoon we will be given a tour of the dam itself.
Evening we will arm ourselves with a few bottles of ‘bubbly’, and drink a toast to ‘Guy’ and the boys. At the same time sparing a special thought for those who did not return, as well as the unfortunate innocent villagers who lived close-by. A wreath to 617 squadron will be cast out into the lake. Taxis back to our Pension.
Day 4. pm Sorpe Dam
The Sorpe dam was one of 617 squadrons 3 main targets on the night of 16/17 May 1943. Although the other two dams the Mohne and Eder were each breached the Sorpe sustained only light damage. The Sorpe required a different and more demanding angle of attack as well as being constructed of a different and more durable core.
A man made reservoir with the longest lake (5 miles) in Europe. Built in 1928-1935
There is not a great deal to see, or do here. But once everyone has taken photo’s or whatever, we will mark the occasion and spot with a wreath. We will then return to our base at the Mohne dam. Having a free afternoon will provide the opportunity to take a sightseeing flight or simply ‘chill out’. During the evening we meet up with a local gentleman by the name of: Mr. Karl-Heinz Wilmes. Herr Karl-Heinz witnessed as a child the bombing raid in 1943 and is prepared to talk to us about it.
Day 5. am. Eder Dam
1 hour 30 drive
As well as the Dam, nearby is a museum which features the bombing and breaching of the dams. Whilst there we will also visit the “Waldeck” medieval castle, and a boat trip around the reservoir. We will taker lunch as and when everyone is ready. We will replicate the wreath laying here.
Day5 pm. EARLY EVENING
We transfer to Dortmund airport.

ABOUT THE ROOMS WITHIN THE PENSION.
It’s understood some rooms may well be larger than another, or possess better facilities.Iit’s rare in any b & b that every room is identical. We have no control nor accept any responsibility for who has what , or shares which room. In the case of single travellers we will attempt to match you in a double room with another single party. However we will first place you in touch beforehand, in order that you are both ok to share. Alternatively we will attempt a single room in some cases there are no extra charges and in other there is. Much depends on time of year and bookings levels. We would also point out that in busy times we may have to split the group in terms of accommodation. For example 12 in the party, and only free rooms for 8. Being then faced with the dilemma of either the tour does not go ahead or we identify alternative accommodation for the overflow we may at our own expense pay for a higher level of accommodation for the overflow.
If we take this action to ensure the tour actually proceeds. We will not entertain any claims for refunds or compensation from those persons who remain in the original accommodation offered and accepted in the package. Dam Busters Tour German

Tour Overview
This tour tracks one of the most daring raids of WWII, when 617 Squadron bombed the dams of the Ruhr Valley in a daring and costly raid. The Dam Busters were immortalised in the 1955 film of the same name. 75 years on, in better times, we can retrace their route and enjoy the rebuilt Dams of the Ruhr. This is a relaxing biking holiday where the roads twist and wind around the lakes of the Ruhr Valley.
This tour begins with an overnight stop in the small town of Marche En Famenne in the north of the Ardennes before heading into the dramatic Ruhr Valley. En route to your two nights near Hagan you can visit the Bridge at Remagen Museum. Two nights near Hagan means the chance to visit the Mohne and Sorpe Dam made famous in Operation Chastise in a charming 130 mile ride spanning the Ruhr. From here we head further along the Ruhr, before a night in a beautiful schloss (castle) overlooking Edersee and the Eder Dam the third dam successfully attacked. The road around the Eder winds in and out of every bay and cove. You can enjoy dinner from the panoramic restaurant of the schloss with views across the Eder.
We leave the Ruhr and head south to another two-night stopover in UNESCO listed Rothenburg ob de Tauber. Use your free day to explore this charming medieval town almost untouched in WWII. This medieval walled town is enchanting and you can easily spend the day wandering the streets and alleys and enjoying the local wines and beer. The following day you are heading towards Baden Baden on one of the greatest riding roads in the world: the B500 or Schwarzwaldhochstrasse. The B500 is a favourite of just about every motorcycle magazine in Europe and for good reason. Stop at Mummelsee at the summit for some coffee and of course a slice of Black Forest Gateaux.
From Baden Baden we head back into the Ardennes via the WW1 Butte de Montsec Memorial for our final night in a Chateau Fort hotel and for our farewell dinner, before a last ride back to Calais and home.
Well organised with very good pre tour information, good hotels particularly SCHLOSS WALDECK and HOTEL CHATEAU LE FORT SEDAN. Katrina was very good at managing peoples wants and needs on the tour. Darren Wigington
Motorrad Tours welcome all makes and models of bike on tour. We also have a range of BMW bikes that you can hire. All our hire bikes for Classic and European Explorer Tours are current model BMW’s complete with ABS, Heated Grips, Panniers, Top Box, Tank Bag, Inner bags for all boxes and a pre programmed BMW Navigator GPS included.
HIRE BIKES : If you are booking with a hire bike we will hand your bike over on the afternoon prior to the first tour day. This will give you a chance to get familiar with the bike, make any adjustments, arrange your packing and not waste any time on the first day riding.
Day 1 Early morning Channel crossing with a longer riding day to the small town of Marche en Famenne
Day 2 Entering the Ruhr, you visit to the Ennepe Dam en route - not involved in Operation Chastise but still remarkable
Day 3 A lovely loop ride to the Lister, Sorpe and Mohensee Dams, with time for a relaxed lunch before returning to our hotel
Day 4 Visit the Eder Dam, spend the night in a Schloss and enjoy dinner in their restaurant
Day 5 South to this unspoiled walled medieval town, staying within the walls in a former brewery.
Day 6 Relax and explore this enchanting town, don't miss the Christmas Shops, or the chance to walk the walls.!
Day 7 Ride through the Black Forest and the famous Black Forest High Road, a mecca for motorcyclists from all over Europe
Day 8 A chance to visit the WW1 Butte du Montsec memorial, before your final evening and farewell dinner in a Chateau Fort

The Experience
- Approx 60 mins with 30 mins flying
- 4 UK Venues
On the night of 16 May 1943 nineteen Lancasters from the specially formed 617 Squadron took off from RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire on a daring raid that was to take them deep into Germany. On the bombing run an exact height of 60 feet had to be held. To facilitate this two spotlights were fitted below the Lancaster so that the spots of light would coincide on the surface of the water when flying at precisely 60 feet. The Peak District is one of England's beautiful National Parks. The flight will take you through the Peak District covering Chatsworth House, the Mam Tor rock formations and Lady Bower reservoir/Derwent Valley where the RAF trained for the Dam Buster flights during World War II. Passengers will have the opportunity to appreciate this special piece of aviation history as well taking in views of outstanding natural beauty.

I went on the 4....
I went on the 4 countries trip and swiss glacier express and overall it was a great trip. The coach I was on was silver service, it was tidy had nice seats and other accessories such as charging points and headsets which was very handy. The drivers Alex and Dave were fantastic, very kind, funny and respectful throughout the whole trip and a pleasure to talk to. The excursions were very pleasant and all ran very smoothly. The hotels were decent and offered a good service. I overall very much recommend leger holidays.
Excellent customer service
Booked our ‘Christmas in Austria & Scenic Trains of the Tyrol’ through George on the customer Helpline. Nothing was too much trouble, everything clearly & patiently explained. He even had permission to log in on his day off to finalise the sale! A charming and helpful young person and a credit to the company.
Been on two tours now...
Been on two tours now the “D Day beaches” and “ All Quiet on the Western Front” tour of the Somme and Ypres. Both four days in total, two travelling and two on the site of the various battles. This is outstanding value for money, picked up from Carlisle , Cumbria and literally looked after all the way through the tours. The coaches are great and the accommodation spot on . The guides are very knowledgeable ( Mark Hope brilliant guy)and the bus drivers professional . Absolutely fantastic .
Due to covid it was...
Due to covid it was 3rd time lucky for us to visit lake Garda, what a treat. One or two hiccups but no fault of Legers at all. Praise to Graham and Chris for their excellent driving and coffee service. Our visit to Verona, our guide was very informative but did walk at a pace sometimes had to hurry to keep up. A lovely holiday
Four Countries New Year & the Swiss Glacier Express
Firstly we must thank Alex and Dave our tour guide / drivers who entertained us through out . The tour was fantastic so was the hotel’s food and entertainment. The tour was through the new year holidays as expected lots of shops closed and hotels were understaffed which was lost on some travelers. We travelled back from stop 24 on a luxuria coach I would recommend paying the extra for the comfort alone
Great company. We did the...
Great company. We did the 4 day D Day Normandy Landing tour.We had 2 great driver's John and Ian.. Nothing was a problem for them. They kept us safe and entertained. Then we had Fred Greenhow as our guide And he was outstanding. He told us everything we wanted to know. Can't praise them enough Thank you all. We will do more tours with them......
just returned from a solos...
just returned from a solos break to valkenburg and rhine valley i enjoyed the break overall although both journeys were considerably longer than expected due to several picks ups. I could have done without the 3 countries meeting point excursion to be honest and the lunch on rhine cruise was very basic. The drivers/couriers were efficient and good humoured and provided free lunch vouchers on the ferry which were much appreciated. I probably would book another break with leger but to somewhere a lot closer to home.
Booked a surprise Birthday treat...
Booked a surprise Birthday treat for my wife 40th to visit The Edinburgh Military Tattoo, All done via work, put all information in the B/card,so excited, one week before trip Cancelled!!! Due to not enough interest?? No Alternative! Never touch them again
I'd like to go lowerthan...
I'd like to go lowerthan one star .my trip over to Italy nearly 36 hours in total.the driver and his wife gave thier mother a seat that was paid for and reserved at a price by another lady who was finally allowed to sit at the front with the drivers mother .( that was good of them considering the lady had paid for 2 holidays and one couldn't make it . I had the cheek to ask for coffee only the women driver to have conversation loud enough for my earshot to her husband then put over the tannoy that coffee will be when they are ready. ( i had bought 24 tickets for drinks on steves advice )but i quietly corrected them saying that they really shouldn't do that so I could hear. Then a barrage of abuse came from her for then her husband to face me off at my seat and a threats to get my case off and find my own way home his face red with rage pointing in my face with comments saying they don't have to take that from me.as they are fed up with people and they have to work 21 hours etc etc .they people were shouting STOP STOP STOP .he continued his rant and saying I would be dropped at the next service station. ( FRANCE) it was raining and I had no idea where I was going or had been.He the gave me a can of diet coke and said i could have it free but no oppology! 15 hours later in italy I wanted to leave and get a plane home .legers were no help but another coach arrived same sort of holiday shearings with nice drivers .No Rome visit and I could be with them for the remainder of time. I did go out on a couple of trips and the bus and drivers were amazing .I was told by legers eventually I can do the return journey with then but my holiday was ruined I cried and slept and am emotionally traumatised . On the plus side the coach i arrived on the doors kept opening in the wind the coach had to pull over and close the door so we could only use side door which was a fire hazzard ! Still no apology last day is today I'm spending in my room .I just want to return to England because I will be getting a solicitor for the abuse i suffered and the money I paid and for the wasted week over Christmas not to mention the anxiety I have suffered .the hotel and food was abysmal. The worse week ever and £1500 spent my nerves are in shreads .I can't wait to see the reviews and already I am flooded with statements from other passengers about how bad it is and my how I should fight for my injustice of it all .this time it must go to court so people are heard and intimidation like this is not allowed
Many thanks to Molly.
I have recently booked a trip to Le Mans and had the good fortune to speak to Molly. She was very helpful and a pleasure to talk to. She was able to answer all but one of my queries with clarity and promised to ring me with the answer to the un-answered question as it required further investigation. This she duly did. An unusually pleasant experience when making a booking over the phone, if only it could be this easy every the time.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
Paleontological finds
Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!
- Every day each car in Moscow metro passes more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
- Moscow subway system is the 5th in the intensity of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
- The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is 90 seconds .

Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.
What is the kremlin in russia?
The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.
And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
