Giovanni Vianna’s Top 5 SLS Scores of 2023

Giovanni Vianna earned his first Street League Skateboarding Super Crown title last year. Will he be able to defend his crown in the 2024 SLS Tour?

Let’s rewind to how Giovanni was able to push his way up to get the Super Crown.

In the Chicago and Sydney stops, he managed to land in the nine club in the knockout rounds, but they weren’t enough to get him to the finals.

But come the Super Crown Championships, he was able to land three nine-club scores, with 9.4 being the highest, enough to snatch the crown from his closest rival, Vincent Milou .

Watch how it all went down in the video above.

The 2024 SLS Tour: Bigger and Better

The SLS Tour will return bigger and better in 2024. Up to $1.8 million prize purse is at stake, with $100,000 to go to the Super Crown Champions.

The tour is also adding more stops for a total of eight, including three SLS “Apex” spot-based events. Regular stops include Paris, San Diego, Australia (TBA), and Tokyo.

The SLS Super Crown Championships 2024 will be again held in São Paulo, Brazil , on December 14-15.

The SLS Tour 2024 will kick off at Adidas Arena, Paris, France, on February 24. Tickets are now available on the SLS website .

Rayssa Leal’s Top 5 Scores of SLS 2023

Before the first stop of Street League Skateboarding this February, let’s look back to how Rayssa Leal managed to land her top 5 scores of 2023.

Rayssa kicked off the 2023 season with a win at the Chicago stop and finished with a Super Crown in São Paulo . It was her second Super Crown win.

She is surely someone to watch out for in the 2024 SLS Tour, which will commence on February 24 at the Adidas Arena in Paris .

The Dew Tour starts Thursday in Des Moines. Here's everything you need to know

dew tour des moines 2023 skateboarding

The Dew Tour, a global skateboarding competition, officially starts Thursday at downtown's new Lauridsen Skatepark, bringing the event to Des Moines for the first time. Here's everything you need to know about it.

What is it?

The Dew Tour is a global Olympic qualifying event for skateboarders and the only one that will be held in the United States. Athletes will compete to earn points to help them secure a spot on their country's Olympic team.

The Summer Olympics — tentatively scheduled to begin July 23 in Tokyo after being rescheduled from 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic — will be the first to feature skateboarding as an official event. It marks long-awaited recognition for the sport, which began in the mid-20th century in California and has since spread around the world.

When is it?

The 2021 Summer Dew Tour runs Thursday-Sunday. Some athletes arrived in Des Moines over a week ago to start practicing, and official practice sessions were held Tuesday and Wednesday.

More: Didn't score a ticket to the Dew Tour? Here's how to participate around Des Moines

Where is it?

The Dew Tour is the inaugural event at Lauridsen Skatepark, a $6.1 million venue at 901 Second Ave. on the west bank of the Des Moines River in the shadow of the Iowa Events Center, with views of downtown and the Iowa Capitol. Declared the largest skate park in the country, it encompasses 5 acres and offers 88,000 square feet of undulating concrete, including bowls, a pool, stairs and a promenade with dozens of features designed for board tricks and intricate maneuvers. There's also a skate-able "WOW" sculpture.

In connection with the Dew Tour:

  • Second Avenue will be closed from Park Avenue to School Street from 8 p.m. Thursday through 3 p.m. Monday.
  • Crocker Street is closed from Third Street to Second Avenue until noon Tuesday.

Who's competing?

More than 300 of the world's best skateboarders from every continent but Antarctica are competing in both men's and women's street and park skateboarding competitions. Notable participants include USA Skateboarding's Nyjah Huston, Sean Malto, Jagger Eaton, Cory Juneau, Mariah Duran, Jordyn Barratt, Brighton Zeuner and Jamie Foy.

Some international skaters to watch for include Aurelien Giraud of France; Pedro Barros, Pamela Rosa and Leticia Bufoni of Brazil; Misugu Okamoto of Japan and Keegan Palmer of Australia.

How can I watch?

The Dew Tour is usually open to the public. The organizers, however, instead handed out a limited number of free tickets this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

They said the tickets, required for access to the venue, were claimed within minutes. But you can still watch the excitement from your home or at numerous metro bars and restaurants via free, online livestream coverage. A full list of streaming services can be found on the Dew Tour website at DewTour.com .

If current ticketholders don't show up, the event may release their tickets to the public, so keep an eye on @DewTour on Twitter and DewTour.com for announcements.

What about the rain?

This week's weather definitely is not ideal, with at least a chance of rain forecast every day. Crews are equipped with squeegees and industrial fans to dry the skate park surface as the concrete can be dangerous when wet.

Dew Tour organizers say daily schedules have built-in cushions so they can postpone and reschedule events as needed. The goal, they say, is to avoid cancellations.

Although some events may be delayed, the organizers said the event won't extend past Sunday.

What else is going on?

  • Several Des Moines restaurants and bars are taking advantage of the excitement and fanfare surrounding the Dew Tour. You can catch a livestream at more than a dozen downtown spots near the skate park. Visit  https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/entertainment/2021/05/18/dew-tour-des-moines-2021-tickets-lauridsen-skatepark-skateboarding-how-watch-livestream/5134153001/  for a list of spots to check out.
  • The Dew Tour is sponsoring a virtual meet-and-greet with three competitors: Team USA Skateboarding's Mariah Duran, Sean Malto and Curren Caples. The skaters will join other professional athletes at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for a conversation about the skateboarding scene before a Q&A session. Registration is required at  us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_pgzX3klBRAygIHMZlaoNGA .
  • If this week makes you want to join the skateboarding community, Dew Tour is partnering with Skate DSM, a local nonprofit, to put on Learn to Skate Clinics. Classes are offered for beginner and intermediate skaters who are looking to get more involved in the sport. The classes will be held from 9-10:15 a.m. and 10:30-11:45 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the office building at 600 E. Court Ave. Registration costs $10 registration and is available at eventbrite.com/e/learn-to-skate-clinic-hosted-by-the-dew-tour-and-skate-dsm-registration-150659206743 .

UPDATED: The 2021 Dew Tour is in Des Moines!

dew tour des moines 2023 skateboarding

You can now sign up to make your FREE ticket reservation to attend the Dew Tour in Des Moines, Iowa coming May 20-23, 2021! You can reserve 1 time slot per day, and must have a ticket to enter.

Tickets are limited so don’t wait.

When the news broke that the 2021 Dew Tour was coming to the new Lauridsen Skatepark in Downtown Des Moines, we had three simultaneous thoughts:

  • How insane.
  • Wow. We need to learn about skateboarding.
  • How do you pronounce Lauridsen?

Mark your calendars! May 20-23 is going to be big for Des Moines. The 2021 Dew Tour is serving as the ONLY U.S.-based, global Olympic skateboard qualifying event for 2021. This is even bigger when you consider that skateboarding will make its debut at the Olympic Games this summer in Tokyo, which were rescheduled in 2020 for July 23 – August 8, 2021. (Source: DSMSkatePark)

So I decided to do the only thing I knew how to to do, slide into @DSMSkatePark ‘s DMs and ask them all the questions I have. Here they are for you below! Special thanks to Kami Rankin, Community Outreach Coordinator of Polk County Conversation, and Norm Sterzenbach at Skate DSM for answering!

Check out our deep dive into what happens at Lauridsen Skatepark after the event here .

First and foremost, how do you pronounce Lauridsen?

LORE-ED-SEN

dew tour des moines 2023 skateboarding

How did Lauridsen Skatepark come to be?

This project began way back in 2004. That year, AMOS (A Mid-Iowa Organizing Strategy) met with and surveyed churches, community leaders, and Des Moines residents to determine what public projects were needed in the city for our youth. A public skatepark was the clear favorite. AMOS put together a small committee and sought support from the City of Des Moines. Then, the City of Des Moines donated 2 acres of beautiful riverfront property adjacent to School Street and 2nd Avenue to become the site of a regional skatepark as an extension of the Principal Riverwalk. From there, fundraising began! Check out the whole background of the park here .

dew tour des moines 2023 skateboarding

Courtesy of Dew Tour

Even for those of us who know next to nothing about skateboarding, this feels like a huge deal for Des Moines. Exactly how big of a deal is it that the Dew Tour is here?

It’s extremely big! Not only are we able to attract a major skateboarding event to Des Moines the same month it opens, but it is also the only Olympic qualifying event in the U.S. More than 300 of the best skateboarders from around the world will be coming to Des Moines for a chance at an Olympic berth. This event will be globally televised and Des Moines will be showcased across the world.

Can you give us the “elevator pitch” version of the journey that professional skateboarders have to take to get to an Olympic qualifying event?

Like any Olympic sport, there are many paths to lead you to a qualifying event. In skateboarding, your qualification is based on the number of points you earn through international qualifying events and which country you are competing with. Each continent is only allowed a limited number of qualifying athletes per gender and discipline.

Are there particular tricks we should be looking out for?

Unlike other sports (gymnastics, ice skating, etc.) skateboarding is not judged based on which tricks you do, but rather overall impression. So there isn’t a go-to trick to look out for. Park skating is based on your best score from three 45-second course runs. Street skating is based on your best score in two 45-second course runs and 5 single trick runs.

Instagram will load in the frontend.

What can locals who aren’t in the skating community do to support the event?

We aren’t sure of all the event details at this point, but we do know there will be tickets available and offsite satellite locations streaming the competition while it’s happening live. We will be encouraging the public to take advantage of the free tickets and community opportunities while the Dew Tour is in town. There will be some rules and restrictions due to COVID, so we ask the public to be respectful of these “do” and “don’t’s.”

We already know that most competitions will be open to public spectators. However, due to COVID, we will be limiting spectators through a ticketing system which will be free. More details to come as the event draws closer!

Do you think Des Moines is preparing for a renaissance in skate culture, or has it been here all along?

Des Moines has had a rich skate scene since the 1980’s, but with the opening of the Lauridsen Skatepark, the Dew Tour, and skateboarding making its debut in the Olympics, we anticipate a major increase in skateboarding in the region.

We’ll be updating this post as news gets released and the tour gets closer! Stay tuned.

In the meantime, check out our other interview with SkateDSM on what we can all do in the park after the Dew Tour leaves town!

Dew Tour Des Moines

After a successful 2021 debut, the annual Dew Tour pro skateboard competition and festival will return to Des Moines, Iowa, on July 29 and 30 at Lauridsen Skatepark for the second consecutive year. The event will feature a finals only skateboard competition and a two-day festival with activities for all ages.

The return of Dew Tour to Des Moines is the result of a partnership with Catch Des Moines and Polk County, as well as Toyota, which will return as the event’s mobility partner. The event will be free and open to the public.

It will also mark the return of the Dew Tour’s Battle of the Shops, where regional skate shops compete as a team against one another on the street course. Des Moines’ Subsect Skate Shop will be the local shop competing against other shops from Chicago, Kansas City, St. Louis and Minneapolis.

Several Olympians are expected to compete at this year’s event, including Lizzie Armanto (FIN), Mariah Duran (USA), Aurelien Giraud (FRA), Nyjah Huston (USA), Aori Nishimura (JPN), Tristan Rennie (USA), Pamela Rosa (BRA), Bryce Wettstein (USA) and more.

The Dew Tour Experience, a festival-style activation next to the competition venue, will include a free sponsor village, public skate pump track, food and beverages, pro athlete meet and greets and more.

Dew Tour Announces New Location in Des Moines, Iowa, Home of the Nation's Largest Skatepark

(Carlsbad, Calif. ) March 23, 2021 -- Mountain Dew® and Accelerate360’s ASN: The Adventure Sports Network Group announce its annual summer Dew Tour skateboard competition and festival is moving to Des Moines, Iowa and will be held May 20-23, 2021 at the brand new Lauridsen Skatepark. The event will include World Skate sanctioned men’s and women’s skateboarding Street and Park competitions, serving as the only

U.S. based global Olympic skateboard qualifying events for 2021. Skateboarding will make its debut at the Olympic Games this summer in Tokyo, which were rescheduled in 2020 for July 23 - August 8, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lauridsen Skatepark’s Street and Park courses have been approved as Olympic-level competition venues. The park also includes two skate bowls, a skate promenade, a skate sculpture, stairs, ledges and more. A passionate group in Des Moines, made of Polk County (managers of the Lauridsen Skatepark), Catch Des Moines (Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau), Greater Des Moines Partnership, Skate DSM (local non-profit) and Subsect (Des Moines skateboard shop), teamed up to make the Lauridsen Skatepark a reality. The skatepark was built by world-class builders California Skateparks - the skatepark architects of the Dew Tour since 2014 - and is now the largest in the United States. Dew Tour will be the first event to be held at the 88,000 square foot park; the weekend will be part of the grand opening kickoff of Lauridsen Skatepark.

Dew Tour 2021 will host this year’s only global Olympic qualifying event in the U.S. for men’s and women’s skateboarding Park and Street competitions, both as elite level Pro Tour stops. The Olympic qualification system is based on rankings maintained by World Skate, the sport’s International Governing Body.

More than 300 of the world’s top male and female skateboarders will compete in individual Park and Street events for a chance to win the Dew Tour title, while earning valuable points toward their country’s Olympic skateboarding team. As in the past, Dew Tour competitors exemplify the best in each sport. Expected to compete at this year’s event include USA Skateboarding national team members such as Nyjah Huston, Jagger Eaton, Cory Juneau, Mariah Duran, Jordyn Barratt, Brighton Zeuner as well as international skaters Aurelien Giraud (FRA), Pedro Barros (BRA), Pamela Rosa (BRA), Leticia Bufoni (BRA), Misugu Okamoto (JPN) and Keegan Palmer (AUS).

“The competitive road ahead for these skaters now starts in Des Moines and concludes in Tokyo. Being able to produce Dew Tour in 2021 and have it continue to serve as an Olympic qualifying event, in a brand new home with a world-class venue, is a dream come true,” says Courtney Gresik, Dew Tour VP and General Manager. “There are no words to express what we all have globally battled in the past year.

We couldn’t be more proud to be in this space today. Our teams and partners are poised and ready to put forth a safe, successful event for all involved.”

“Excited is an understatement for how I feel about the Dew Tour coming to Des Moines,” says Angela Connolly, Polk County Board of Supervisors and managers of the Lauridsen Skatepark. “This event is exactly why we made sure that the Lauridsen Skatepark was going to be the biggest in the country. Having the Dew Tour as a partner in opening our brand new skatepark is a true honor and we look forward to them bringing professional skaters and fans to Des Moines to not only help showcase our park but to engage the youth in our community who are so excited to get out there and skate.”

“What better way to introduce Lauridsen Skatepark than hosting the 2021 Dew Tour, one of the premier skating events in the world,” said Greg Edwards, President and CEO of Catch Des Moines. “To host an Olympic qualifying event is an awesome showcase for both this new facility and the city of Des Moines. Given the circumstances, this isn’t just an event, but a celebration, and I assure you it will bring the WOW factor.”

With the current COVID-19 pandemic, details around hosting public spectators are being evaluated amongst Dew Tour, World Skate, and local and state event partners as it pertains to safety and health of athletes, staff and potential fans. More information surrounding this will be announced at a later date.

Dew Tour will be livestreamed in its entirety on DewTour.com, Facebook Live, YouTube and other major platforms for a total of 25+ hours of LIVE video. Additionally, more than four hours of Dew Tour coverage will air on NBC and NBCSN this summer. Stay updated at DewTour.com and on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube by following @DewTour.
