Thousands of people can travel for free over the coming days on the Dart, Luas, and Dublin Bus for the Bank Holiday weekend thanks to an initiative announced by Transport for Ireland.

Anyone who holds a Leap Card will be able to bring a plus-one on board with them across TFI trains, trams, and buses for no additional cost this weekend.

The deal came into effect on Friday, February 3, and will remain active until Monday, February 6.

All customers have to do is present their TFI Leap Card to pay for their journey or validate a pre-loaded ticket as normal and bring someone along for free for the duration of their journey.

The offer is valid on the following transport over the weekend:

  • Bus Éireann (excluding Expressway)
  • Go-Ahead Ireland
  • TFI Local Link
  • Iarnród Éireann/Irish Rail
  • DART and Commuter Services on the Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail short-hop zone
  • Cork Commuter Network

If you have a valid Monthly/Annual ticket on your Leap card you can use it to avail of this promotion on the train services for which your ticket is valid – excluding Cross Border travel.

Speaking about the launch, Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan TD said: “The TFI Leap Card has gone from strength to strength and it continues to expand with the rollout of the young adult Leap Card.

Dart+ programme

“Over 80,000 young adult cards were purchased from July last year to the end of the year.

“Public transport customers across Ireland are responding positively to our improved and expanded services on the network with passenger numbers, now back to pre-Covid levels.

“Ireland is one of the few European countries where public transport has bounced back in such a strong way.

“This Leap +1 means that even more people can experience what our public transport system has to offer.

“It’s an initiative that’s good for friends and family and that’s good for our environment, as we enjoy this first February Bank Holiday.”

TFI 90 Minute Fare

You can use the TFI network around Dublin for 90 Minutes with your TFI Leap Card, for just €2 for adults, €1 for young adults (19-25) or students, and 65 cent for children.

TFI 90 applies to most journeys in the Dublin area whether you are using multiple services during 90 minutes or simply taking a single trip. TFI 90 applies to:

  • Dublin Bus (Except Express services which cost €2.40);
  • Go-Ahead Ireland services in the Dublin City Bus network;
  • All Luas services; and
  • Most DART and Commuter Rail services (zones 1 to 4 in the Short Hop Zone).

To get the TFI 90 minute fare, simply use your Leap Card as you normally would within 90 minutes. You must touch on every time you board a service to demonstrate you hold a valid ticket for each journey:

  • touch on before each bus journey; and
  • touch on before and touch off after each DART, train and tram journey.

As long as you touch on your last service within 90 minutes of your first, you will qualify for the TFI 90 Minute Fare. You can see how much time you have left within your 90 minutes by checking your Leap Top Up App.

TFI Leap Card Fares

dublin bus free travel

Do I have to pay for each journey with the TFI 90 Minute Fare?

The TFI 90 Minute Fare is deducted at the start of the journey, and your second and subsequent journeys are free as long as you touch on your card within 90 minutes of the first journey.

Are there any time constraints for a TFI 90 Minute Fare journey?

Yes, to pay the TFI 90 Minute Fare, the second and subsequent touch ons must be made within 90 minutes of the first one.

Are there any distance constraints for the TFI 90 Minute Fare?

Yes, to pay the TFI 90 Minute Fare a journey must be completed within the 90 minute boundary on eligible TFI services.

This includes:

Why can I travel further on a short fare in the city centre versus further out / in the suburbs.

The short fares applies to a journey on any single route up to approx. 2km to 3km in length, so some variances will exist in relation to distances people can travel on the short fare. This is for a variety of reasons including the location of individual stops on the public transport network relative to fare boundaries and to the need to maintain fares consistency when routes use different streets depending on direction of travel.

What will happen if I forget to touch-on before boarding a Luas after a Bus journey?

If you forget to touch-on at the Validator on the Luas platform before you get on a tram you will not have a valid ticket (a validated TFI Leap Card) for your Luas journey. If caught, you will receive a Luas Standard Fare Notice requiring a penalty to be paid.

What happens if you touch-on but forget to touch-off when travelling on Luas?

The maximum fare, i.e. TFI 90 Minute Fare, will be charged.
