Torqeedo unveils new Travel XP electric outboard, modular lineup

After more than 100,000 Torqeedo Travel electric boat motors sold since 2005, the company is revamping and refreshing the line with the new 1.6 kiloWatt Travel XP and four modular motor and battery packages to choose from: Adventure Package, Essential Package, Range Package and Power Package.

Fabian Bez, CEO of Torqeedo GmbH, said “The new Travel family marks the opening of a new chapter of Torqeedo products. The original Travel was Torqeedo’s first product, an icon that disrupted an industry. The new lineup serves an even broader range of boating applications, adds many user-centric features, and allows boaters to fully customize their Travel experience to meet their individual needs.”

New 1.6kW Travel XP part of Power Package

The latest motor in the line is the 1600 watt (1.6 kw) Travel XP at the core of the Power package. It is nominated for a DAME Design Award at the METSTRADE show in Amsterdam where the four packages are being revealed to demonstrate the modular approach:

Adventure Package The Adventure Package pairs an 1,100 W Travel and a 1,080 Wh battery with an innovative mounting and steering system that gets kayak anglers quickly and stealthily to their secret spots.

Essential Package The Essential Package is the original Travel, redefined. It pairs an ultra-efficient 1,100 W outboard motor with a 1,080 Wh battery.

Range Package The Range Package substitutes a higher-capacity battery (1,425 Wh) for when you want to spend all day on the water, taking boaters even further.

Power Package The Power Package easily propels bigger boats, boats on coastal waters, or that routinely experience windy, wavy conditions with its heavy-duty 1,600 W direct-drive motor and 1,425 Wh battery.

In each case, once the package is selected, there are various charging, propeller, and accessory options that allow boaters to build their own customized Travel setup.

“These innovative outboards are designed to be ultra-easy to use, transport, and stow, and the click-and-play battery means no more cables to connect.” said Thomas Wiedemann, Senior Vice President Global Program Management. “Once the battery is removed with a click and the tiller is folded, the compact, lightweight motor is easy to hand up and down to a dinghy and stores easily on a mother boat.”

The company says the included 180 W charger cuts charge times in half. The designers have also taken a fresh look at the user interface and given it a vibrant, easy to read full-colour display of real-time GPS-calculated range and runtime.

Bluetooth, WiFi, new TorqView smartphone app

Bluetooth and WiFi are built in, along with Torqeedo’s TorqLink communications protocol, so owners can connect with the company’s new smartphone app, TorqView. TorqView enables a host of new features, including maps, trip logs, and over-the-air updates that can be performed anywhere there’s an internet connection.

Torqeedo owners can also opt-in to allow Torqeedo and its authorized service centers to collect system information to facilitate their ability to provide the fastest and most efficient service and maintenance.

The new-and-improved tiller on the Travel motors has infinitely variable speed and steering controls. For boats with a rudder or steering wheel, the Power Package’s Travel XP can be ordered as a remote model with everything needed to connect to standard Teleflex steering. An optional remote kit is also available to convert a tiller-steered Travel.

Torqeedo Travel XP tiller and digital display

The new, 90-degree tilt-equipped transom mount design lets the user raise the motor completely out of the water, and a new 3-stage rotation control lever lets them quickly choose between fixed steering, +/- 60-degree steering, and 360-degree, fully rotatable steering.

“The entire user experience, down to the new connected features and the smartphone app, leverages Torqeedo’s 18 years of experience in building the world’s best electric drive systems and brings it to a new generation of boaters who demand greener, cleaner, and more thoughtfully designed products,” said Sven Mostögl, Senior Vice President Branded Retail. “This launch is the start of a new chapter for Torqeedo. Not only are we significantly reshaping and sharpening the product portfolio and brand appearance, but we have also made the next decisive step in building the future of electric boating.”

The new Travel XP and Travel family of motors, batteries and accessories will be available in early 2024.

Torqeedo Travel 1003 Electric Outboard: Banishing the Fumes

  • By Webb Chiles
  • Updated: January 8, 2013

e motor torqeedo travel

Torqeedo Travel 1003

The joy of sailing. A finely balanced hull cutting through waves. Blue sky above. Salt spray sparkling across the bow. Warm breeze against skin. A delightful whiff of gasoline. Wait! Stop! And I did, upon noting the first sniff of gasoline that I’ve detected on any boat that I’ve owned, over a span of almost 40 years.

Gannet , the Moore 24 I bought in 2011, came with not one but two gasoline outboards. I thought I’d keep whichever was more reliable—until that first whiff. Moore 24s have open interiors with limited places to stow outboards and jerry jugs of gasoline below, and I keep my decks uncluttered. On a passage, I’d inevitably find myself sleeping next to the outboard and gasoline and oil. It wasn’t going to happen.

Although before I made my first circumnavigation in her, I sailed the engineless, 37-foot Egregious in and out of her slip in San Diego, having no engine on Gannet was not an option. Her then home, North Point Marina on Lake Michigan, near the Illinois/Wisconsin border, with 1,500 slips the biggest freshwater marina in the world, doesn’t permit “sailing, rowing, paddling, or sculling” inside the breakwater. Neither do many other marinas. You may have noticed that the world is falling apart. Perhaps that’s happening because it’s being run by powerboaters.

After some research, I ordered a German-made electric Torqeedo Travel 1003—and learned that it isn’t easy being green. Why? First, in this case, is cost, and second is range.

A Travel 1003 costs roughly $2,000, more than twice the price of a gas outboard of similar power, and has a range of 2 to 16 miles. The 2 miles is at full throttle, when the 520-watt-hour battery will be discharged in 30 minutes. The 16 miles is at low throttle, when the battery will last eight hours.

On the light and easily driven Gannet , I’ve found that at medium throttle, which provides a speed of 2.5 knots, the battery is good for about three hours and a distance of 7 miles. In practice, this means that in and out of the harbor twice leaves the battery close to needing to be recharged, a task that takes more than 23 hours. Even with a boat that sails well, this short range presents problems.

When coastal cruising, I want to be at the next harbor before dark, and I like to start early. Powering across smooth water at first light before the wind comes up has its charms. With the quiet but not completely silent Torqeedo—there’s a not unpleasant whirring sound—those charms aren’t much compromised. But not many miles are covered, either.

Torqeedo offers a possible solution: a solar panel that rolls up for storage and is said to provide unlimited range in bright sunlight. This panel costs $1,000. Nevertheless, I requested and received one for my 70th birthday. Being old has its compensations.

I knew the dimensions of the panel, but sometimes you have to see something to really understand. When the box arrived, I thought it big. When I opened it and unrolled the panel, Carol, my wife, immediately said, “There’s no place for that on Gannet .” And within the length of its connecting cord, there wasn’t. I sent the panel back.

e motor torqeedo travel

I’m considering buying a second battery, for $700, that would more than double my range by allowing one battery to be used while the other is being partially recharged by the boat’s main electrical system with its own solar panels. This would also increase the cost of being green to about three times that of an equivalent 3-horsepower gas outboard.

Having said all this, I don’t regret my choice at all.

The good news begins just after I place the clever Moore 24 outboard bracket in its slot in the stern. The bracket is easy to insert and remove even while the boat is under way, and so is the three-part Torqeedo, which, at 31 pounds for the long-shaft version, weighs about the same as a comparable gas outboard. On the advice of a former Moore 24 owner, I bought the long-shaft version. He meant well, but this was a mistake. The short shaft would’ve worked, saved a pound, taken up less room below, and not required special manipulation to clear the water when the engine isn’t in use.

On our first venture into Lake Michigan with the Torqeedo, I found that even when the engine was locked in the raised position, the long shaft left the prop partially dragging in the water, undercutting sailing performance and creating far more noise than the engine does in use. The solution—to tilt the engine more and secure it with sail ties to the stern-pulpit stanchions—means that I have to remove the tiller arm and stow it below. Slightly awkward, but necessary.

With the shaft tightened to the outboard bracket by two plastic-handled bolts, the battery is slipped into its slot, lowered, then locked by inserting a plastic pin. Finally, the tiller arm is attached and two electric cables connected: one from the battery to the shaft, the other from the tiller arm to the battery.

I’m struck by three things in this process: how well the Torqeedo is engineered and designed, how easy it is to mount and assemble, and how clean the parts are. No grease. No oil. No scrubbing my hands before I touch anything else.

My only reservation about the quality of the Travel 1003 is that the electrical cable connectors are plastic rather than metal and raise a concern about eventual cross threading. Thus far, I haven’t had a problem, but I do think metal connectors would be better and more appropriate on what is a top-end product.

With the Travel 1003 assembled comes a great moment: instant, one-finger starting. Press a button on the tiller arm and the Torqeedo is on, although the only way you know that is by the tiller-arm display lighting up. No repeated pulling on a cord. No curses. No fiddling. Not even a sound. In fact, there’s wonder and doubt that the engine is on, relieved by twisting the tiller handle and seeing the big, two-bladed prop turn. Back to neutral and absolute silence.

The Travel 1003 has forward, reverse, and, for 2,050-pound Gannet , ample power and torque. I don’t know how fast it will drive the little boat, but I’ve had her at 6 knots in one brief burst.

I knew my speed from the remarkable tiller-arm display, with built-in GPS, that shows the percentage of remaining battery charge, remaining range at the current speed, speed over ground, and consumption in watts. Increasing rpm and observing the often-dramatic decrease in range is instructive. An alarm sounds when battery charge drops to 30 percent.

I’ve only approached setting off that alarm once, when haze and a wind shift caused me to come in a mile downwind of the breakwater entrance. Unfortunately, I lowered sails before I realized my mistake. Gannet dislikes being powered into chop, and I had to keep increasing rpm to make any headway. Lesson learned, I’ve subsequently been more careful on my returns to the marina, and I’ve added jib-furling gear so I can resume sailing without having to haul a jib back on deck.

Engines are necessary because people have made them necessary.

I don’t take exception to North Point Marina’s rules. More than 1,500 boats trying, on a busy weekend, to use one narrow, partially silted over entrance, with some of them short-tacking under sail in front of confused powerboaters, is certain chaos and probable disaster.

Harbors all over are now laid out with the expectation that vessels have engines. To clear in with officials in many ports requires tying to docks impossible to reach under sail. So an engine or a tow is needed for the last few hundred yards. And I need an engine for the .75-mile trip from my slip to beyond the maelstrom of powerboat wakes at the breakwater entrance.

For those distances, and for me, the Torqeedo Travel 1003 is excellent.

Webb Chiles has moved Gannet to San Diego to prepare her for his next voyage. Kindle editions of his books are available from Amazon.com .

Comparing Minn Kota E Drive vs. Torqeedo Travel 603 S

By: Author Steve

Posted on Published: July 28, 2021  - Last updated: December 6, 2022

Comparing Minn Kota E Drive vs. Torqeedo Travel 603 S

They say electric motors will replace combustible engines in the coming years. The Minn Kota E Drive and Torqeedo Travel aim to do just that. Both are doing their best to overtake small gasoline-powered outboard motors in the marketplace.

The Torqeedo is designed to mount onto a dinghy up to 1 ton in weight. While the E Drive is designed for full-size pontoons. Both can be mounted onto Jon boats.

With more and more lakes restricting combustible engines on the water you might be considering either motor for your boat.

Both have their pros and cons, but which one will come out on top?

Let’s find out!

Table of Contents

Side By Side Specs Comparison

Side by side features comparison, 2. weight of motor, 3. steering control, 5. prop material, which motor is winning, minn kota e drive and torqeedo travel 603 s pros and cons, and the overall winner is…, a fair comparison.

While both of these electric motors overlap in their target market they approach it in very different ways. In this article, I will compare what I believe to be the seven most important specs and features as fair as possible.

Each motor will be graded on each important spec. The winner of each spec will receive one “point” to their total score out of seven. Then we will go over the pros and cons of each motor.

Whichever motor has the best score at the end will be considered the winner.

These features are not in any particular order. Voltage is the first, but that does not mean I believe it to be the MOST important spec or feature.

Keep in mind that these are my expectations for an electric motor, your expectations might be different .

Minn Kota Trolling Motor Battery

Voltage is such an important factor, it actually comes down to a weight issue and requires more connections. The average weight for a high capacity 12v battery (what the average boater uses) is 65lbs.

To reach higher voltages one will need more batteries. More batteries mean more weight and more connections because each new battery has to be properly wired into the circuit. More connections mean there is more of a chance for one to go bad.

The Minn Kota requires 48 volts. That means it will need 4 12v batteries in a circuit. Adding a massive amount of weight to the boat and several more electrical connections.

  • Travel 603 S

The Torqeedo requires 24 volts to work properly. Cutting back on weight and electrical connections but leaving room to be desired in other areas.

Winner: The Torqeedo Travel 603 S easily wins the first round.

Your boat can only handle so much weight. That’s why I believe having a lighter motor is beneficial. This does come with its cons which we will discuss later but for now, we will focus on the pros of a light motor.

Minn Kota E Drive

However, when compared to other electric engines it is on the heavy side. This is because it has more parts made out of metal instead of plastic, which we will discuss later.

The Travel 603 S scoots into the bout weighing a lowly 34lbs including the battery. It is over half as light as the E Drive and on the lower end of the spectrum when compared to gasoline outboards of similar horsepower.

Because it is composed of mostly plastic it can shed the pounds the Minn Kota cannot. While being made of plastic helps, it is also a con which we will discuss later.

Winner: The Torqeedo Travel 603 S extends its lead.

This is where you might disagree with me. I have operated boats steered with steering cable/ steering wheel and I have operated tiller handle steered boats.

It is my preference to have a boat with a steering wheel. While this does mean a few more possibilities of something breaking, It’s a more comfortable position.

The E Drive and the Travel 603 S both steer differently, so steering control made the top 5 important features list.

Minn Kota E-Drive Electric Outboard Motor - Testing and For Sale

  • Comparing Minn Kota Riptide vs. Terrova
  • Comparing Minn Kota i-Pilot Vs i-Pilot Link: How Are…
  • Comparing Minn Kota Traxxis vs. Endura Max

The E Drive gives you options. If you like the tiller handle there is an option to add a tiller handle to your motor. If, however, you prefer to be behind the wheel, it also has the option for steering cables .

Torqueedo Travel 603 S uses a tiller handle steering

The Travel 603 S only has the option for tiller handle steering . This does cut down on the steps for the installation process and cuts down on the possibility of breaking.

Not having the option for running steering cables is the reason why the Minn Kota wins. However, if you don’t have the option for steering cable on your boat then this section really should matter.

Winner: The Minn Kota E Drive gets its first win.

You enjoy being on the water or you wouldn’t be researching electric motors for your boat. The longer you can stay on the water the better. That is why runtime should be very important to you.

A longer runtime means you have the option to go a little further from the boat ramp and make more memories with your family and friends.

The E Drive can operate at full throttle for 2 hours. If you don’t go full throttle it exponentially prolongs the runtime. While this sounds amazing, don’t forget this motor is only 2hp so you won’t be breaking any speed records during that 2-hour window!

There are two reasons the E Drive runs for 2 hours .  First, the 4 batteries are connected to have a large capacity (Amps per hour).

The second is Minn Kota’s Digital Maximizer. Minn Kota boasts that this feature delivers only as much power as you need, extending your time on the water.

The Torqeedo with its smaller battery capacity only runs for 50 minutes . Yes, LESS THAN HALF as long as the E Drive.

Torqeedo tried to compensate for the lack of run time by offering a solar charger    for the batteries. This solar charger can be hooked up and charging while the motor is operating. Prolonging your adventure on the water.

Of course, this solar charger does not come with the motor, it must be purchased separately.

Winner: The Minn Kota E Drive boasts a longer run time of over an hour!

Minn Kota Trolling Motor Replacement Prop

Plastic Vs Metal. Which is better? I prefer metal simply because it’s tougher to break. However, if you intend to use your motor in salt water, you might run into corrosion problems with a metal prop.

While I must admit I am less of a fan of plastic, I see that it has its many benefits.

The Minn Kota E Drive is constructed of mostly metal parts, the prop included. This gives it the ability to better handle run-ins with rocks and logs.

However, this also adds a lot of weight to the motor itself. It also restricts it to only freshwater use.

Minn Kota warns that using any of their products not designed for use in brackish or saltwater voids the product warranty.

The Torqeedo Travel 603 S prop is made of plastic , like a majority of the motor. While this is not ideal for the strength of the motor, it allows the motor to be much lighter and more versatile.

You won’t have to worry about saltwater corrosion if you plan to use it in brackish or saltwater. The Torqeedo is approved for fresh and saltwater usage.

What the Travel 603 S might lack in strength, Torqeedo made up for in ingenuity. They designed a breakaway system that we will talk about in the Tilt section.

Winner: The Torqeedo Travel 603 S puts up another point in this round.

Having electric tilt/trim makes getting to the plane much easier. With the press of a button, you can get the motor to the perfect angle to maximize efficiency of your motor.

Manual tilt does not allow you to do this while on the go. You will have to experiment with the tilt, while stationary until you find the best angle to run it on your boat.

Minn Kota E-Drive Control Board Kit for 2008 & Earlier #2774008

The Minn Kota E Drive has electric trim. So if you are venturing through shallow water you can trim the motor up and when you enter deep enough water you can trim it back down.

The tilt button is located on the throttle display unit. This placement means tilting the motor takes little to no effort.

The Torqeedo Travel 603 S is manual tilt. You will have to pull two pins, set the motor at the angle you believe to be correct, and reinsert the pins.

This is a bit more of a hassle, but Torqeedo tried making up for it with their breakaway feature. If you were to strike a rock or any submerged debris, the lower unit can kick towards the surface without breaking.

This is a nice feature but since it doesn’t get too high speeds, which we will talk about next, it is not a feature that will be needed often. When it is needed, though, IT IS NEEDED! This feature can save you from repair costs or having to buy a new motor.

Winner: Despite the breakaway feature of the Torqeedo, the Minn Kota E Drive takes the point.

neither was designed for speed

Do you want to get where you’re going quickly? Do you enjoy flying across the water? Well, neither of these electric motors boasts incredible speed. They are, after all, 2hp motors…

Neither was designed for speed. They were designed for a quiet electric alternative to small gasoline-powered outboards. Either one will get you where you need to go, just not in a hurry.

So how fast will each motor go?

The E Drive comes in as the speed demon at 5mph. You’re not going to beat anyone in a race across the water but you will have a good time with friends and family at an enjoyable pace.

Believe it or not, the Travel 603 S is slightly slower than the E Drive. It tops out at 4.5 mph. This is plenty fast to get you where you want to go.

Winner: The Minn Kota E Drive is faster.

The winner of each category was-

Voltage – The Torqeedo Travel 603 S uses less voltage/ fewer batteries.

Weight of Motor – The Torqeedo Travel 603 S is a lighter motor.

Steering Control – The Minn Kota E Drive has 2 options on how you can steer it.

Runtime – The Minn Kota E Drive runs more than an hour longer than the Travel 603 S on a full charge at full throttle.

Prop Material – The Torqeedo Travel 603 S is more versatile because of its plastic parts, prop included.

Tilt – The Minn Kota E Drive has an electric tilt instead of a manual tilt.

Speed – The Minn Kota E Drive barely beats the Torqeedo Travel 603 S by 0.5 mph.

That means the Minn Kota E Drive has won 4/7 rounds, and the Torqeedo Travel 603 S has won 3/7 rounds. This doesn’t mean you should go out and buy the E Drive. The Travel 603 S might still be for you!

Check out the Pros and Cons below to help finalize your decision.

There is no such thing as the perfect motor. Every single one has its pros and cons. It’s up to you to decide which motor’s pros outweigh the cons for your specific situation.

The winner of our testing is the Minn Kota E Drive. It beat out the Torqeedo Travel 603 S because of its electric tilt, multiple steering options, speed, and runtime!

This does not mean we wouldn’t recommend buying the Travel 603 S. It is a solid motor and well worth a closer look at the features it offers.

Many people favor electric motors for their lack of noise while they are operating. With so many lakes beginning to ban gasoline-powered outboard motors, electric motors are finally starting to be recognized as a viable alternative.

However, few people know electric motors were invented before the combustible engine! Now, you’re one!

Torqeedo Travel: latest electric outboard

  • Top stories

There is no doubt that German brand Torqeedo has come to be regarded as the pioneer of marine electric propulsion. Incredibly, it’s almost two decades since it launched its first Travel electric outboard motor , and since then the company has sold over 100,000 of them, and a quarter of a million electric drive systems across its complete product range.

But there’s also no doubt that, with a rash of new products from a slew of fresh competitors in the electric outboard marketplace, there was a real danger of Torqeedo being left behind. Its answer is a brand new Travel range that brings significant updates but also modernises what has always been a rather functional aesthetic.

The new Travel family’s modular design starts with four packages to choose from.

The Adventure Package is designed for kayaks and very lightweight small boats. It pairs a 1,100W (equivalent to about 3hp) Travel motor with a 1,080 Wh lithium battery. The motor itself weighs just 9.8kg including the mounting system, cables and remote throttle, and the battery adds a further 8.6kg and is positioned separately for even weight distribution.

The Essential Package is a usefully updated version of the original Travel. Aimed at tenders, dinghies and daysailers up to 1.5 tonnes, it comprises an electric outboard motor with a clip on battery.

Weighing 11.6kg without the battery and available in two shaft lengths, it now has a backlit full colour display on the tiller, rather than the basic monochrome LED of the previous model. This uses a built-in GPS sensor to show real-time range and run time as well as charge status, speed and consumption. It can be linked directly to the TorqLink app on your phone, giving more information as well as over the air firmware updates.

Other improvements include a much quicker ‘click and play’ battery that connects automatically with the motor once installed rather than needing separate cables to be plugged in and secured each time, and a tiller that folds and adjusts rather than removes.

The standard 240V 180W charger halves charging times, or you can charge directly from the mother ship via a 12V/24V cable or even via optional solar panels. A Remote Kit allows it to be used with a steering wheel or rudder.

Beyond that, the Range package swaps the standard 1,080Wh battery for a more substantial 1,425Wh unit. At half throttle, Torqeedo claims a run time of close to 10 hours with this bigger battery.

Finally, the Power Package, designed for larger boats, has a 1,600W motor, equivalent to a 5hp engine.

Range from torqeedo travel 603.

Driving time and range depend on the battery. In an example with the Travel 603 and the 500-Wh battery, we have the following measured values:

  • Under full load , the electric motor lasts for about 50 minutes. The speed in lies in the case with approximately 8 km/h. Within the short time, therefore, a range of 6.1 kilometers could be covered.
  • At half power, the driving pleasure lasts approximately for a 2-hour trip on the water with marching speed of 6 km / h and a range of 10 km.
  • If you plan longer and more leisurely tours on the water, you come with less power even significantly further. At 1/4 of the power for 5 hours a speed of 4 km / h was achieved. So a total range of 20 km. And that with only one battery charge.

E-outboard range information

In displacement mode, the power required increases exponentially. If you want to double your speed, you need eight times the power. At the same time, you can increase the range on your trip enormously if you reduce the speed a little. The charger from the Torqeedo Travel 603 C
