What to see and do in Egypt

So you bought the plane ticket, made the hotel booking, and are now counting down the days to your Egypt trip! What are the must-see attractions? Here are some fantastic places to include in your itinerary!

In this city, you'll find unique sites to explore since it was a base for the pharaohs of the New Kingdom. No wonder this city is called the biggest open-air museum in the world. It offers a lot of attractions, such as museums, great restaurants, and boutiques.

The Valley of the Kings, Karnak Temple, and the Memorial Temple of Hatshepsut are some of the most incredible historical attractions in Luxor. You’ll also find many options for balloon rides during sunrise. The colorful sky and colossal buildings make for beautiful views.

Cairo is Egypt’s capital and has a special atmosphere that mixes city life and historic landmarks . You can visit mosques, enjoy restaurants, and explore the monuments dating back to the Mameluke era.

The labyrinth shopping souk Khan el-Khalili is a truly unique place. Here you'll find tiny workshops and stalls laden with ceramics, textiles, spices, and perfumes. Just walking the alleys is already an incredible experience. Other must-sees are the Al-Azhar Mosque, the Sultan Hassan Mosque, and the medieval gate of Bab Zuweila.

One of the most famous Egypt cities in history, Alexandria was founded by, you guessed it, Alexander the Great . There is still a strong spirit of power in the air in the city that was home to Cleopatra.

Despite the fact that only a few remnants of its illustrious past remain, Alexandria is a wonderful place to visit. Among the attractions is the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, one of Egypt's most important contemporary landmarks, the Alexandria's Antiquities Museum, and the Manuscript Museum.

Egypt to offer visas on arrival to Indians. Here’s what to know

By Condé Nast Traveller

Around Aswan the beautiful contrasts of the towering rocks and dunes of the Sahara desert sit nicely with the deep blue...

In a recent announcement, Egypt introduced a new multiple-entry visa while adding more nationalities to its visa-on-arrival list. Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Issa confirmed India’s place on the list in his speech early last week. The update has come along with a series of measures aimed at boosting tourism in the country.

Egypt visa latest updates

As per  reports , the government will soon be announcing a new  multiple-entry visa (MEV) to Egypt at $700 (Rs57,688). This visa will be valid for five years, in contrast to the one-year validity period of previous MEVs. And now, a  single-entry visa on arrival valid for 30 days will be available to more than 180 nationalities for $25 (Rs2,060). India and China have also made it on this list: now, tourists from China and Indians who hold a Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) resident visa will also be able to obtain a visa upon arrival to Egypt. Till now, this facility was available only to holders of an entry visa from Schengen countries, the UK, the USA, Japan, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. In addition, Chinese tourists will also be able to obtain an emergency entry visa at Egyptian ports if they are travelling individually. Changes have also been announced in the eligibility criteria for tourists arriving from other countries. Among other updates, Iraqi tourists can now obtain visas on arrival (upon meeting the eligibility criteria), while Iranian tourists will be allowed to obtain a visa on arrival when heading to South Sinai through a certified tourist agency. Israelis can visit Hurghada in groups with the sponsorship of certified tourism companies. The update has come following a major blow to the country’s tourism industry during the pandemic. Last year, Egypt managed to see a rise in tourism with some  4.9 million tourists visiting in the first six months of 2022. The total number was estimated at  11.7 million for 2022–impressive, yet far lower than the record 13.1 million tourists seen in 2019. Now, Egypt wants to increase its visitor numbers by 25 to 30 per cent annually, with a goal to hit 30 million tourists by 2028. But according to the ministry, these moves are expected to not only boost tourism in the country, but also ease regional tensions among the countries. For instance, Turkish nationals will be given expanded access to visas on arrival in a bid to reestablish ties between Egypt and Turkey. The visa updates are expected to come into effect in the near future, so you might want to stay tuned.

When visiting Egypt, one requires a visa to enter the country, and this applies to Indian citizens as well. There are 2 types of visas for Indian passport holders:

Business Visa : Anyone visiting Egypt solely for business purposes must apply for this Egypt visa. The applicant must provide documents such as booked flight tickets, a cover letter from the company that the applicant will be representing during the business trip and an invitation letter from the partners in Egypt that must be sent directly to the consulate.

Tourist Visa : This type of Egypt visa is useful to anyone visiting the country for leisure and sightseeing purposes. While a tourist visa is valid for 90 days, one’s trip cannot extend beyond 30 days. This Egypt visa application process does not involve going for a personal interview unless one has no travel history or the immigration office insists on an interview. Some document requirements for this Egypt visa for Indians include a valid cover letter to the consular, booked flight tickets and gazette-attested past 6 months bank statements (with a minimum balance of Rs. 50,000).

Application process : Depending on one's nationality, he/she can either apply for an Egypt visa online or in person. A lot of countries such as Albania, Australia, Canada, Croatia, Ireland, U.S.A. and U.K. can apply for an Egypt e-Visa. However, since India is not eligible for this, applicants will have to apply for Egypt visa for Indian citizens in person and not for an e-Visa.

Egypt does not outsource its visa processes to private agencies, and therefore, Indian passport holders do not have Egypt e-Visa or visa on arrival as an option unless one is travelling in a large group. To apply for an Egypt visa, Indian citizens must apply for their visas offline, and the application must be submitted to the consulate or the embassy depending in which state he/she resides. If the applicant cannot go to submit the documents, an agent or relative with an authorisation letter can go on his/her behalf and submit the application. One must check the opening hours of the office before going to apply.

The processing time takes 2 to 3 working days, and Indian applicants can go to collect the visas from the Egyptian embassy in Delhi or the consulate in Mumbai during the specified timings.

Documents required : The list of documents needed for the Egypt visa application depends on one’s nationality and the type of visa one applies. However, some standard documents one requires are the visa application form, a passport with 6 months validity and 2 blank pages for the visa stamps, recent photographs as per specifications, request letter to the consulate, confirmed flight and accommodation bookings, travel itinerary and photocopies of the first and last page of the passport. One must also provide previous 6 months bank details with a minimum balance of Rs. 50,000. The bank must also attest the bank statements. It is very important to thoroughly check the list of documents when applying for the Egypt visa. One must also check the amount of the fees since it varies with the type of visa one applies.

Let’s Learn a Bit More About Egypt

Egypt is a nation infamous for its geographic “distribution,” despite having 1 million square kilometres of territory and being among the world’s thirty largest nations. Due to the largely arid ecosystem, barely 5% of Egypt’s overall land area and nearly all of its water resources are used by the country’s 99 per cent population. The Nile River, which is the lifeblood of about 90 million people and the centre of urban development, is the longest and, possibly, most important river in the world, stretching 6,695 kilometres across Egypt and three other nations. Egypt is a nation that sits at the nexus of the ancient and the contemporary. Even though Egypt is often referred to as the “gift of the Nile,” in reality, it is the gift that never ends. Egypt is highly layered, complicated, and full of culinary delights. It has a 7000-year-old history and a fascinating culture. All is in excess here, a characteristic that is uniquely Egyptian and one that you will quickly come to know in all that you see. This is true of colourful marketplaces, gorgeous mosques, the fascinating Pharaonic ruins, natural and artificial architectural wonders, and everything else. People also travel here to engage in stargazing, which is a meditative and mind-calming pastime. Whether you are at the magnificent White Desert or the Giza Pyramids, you will undoubtedly be able to observe and comprehend the beauty of the cosmos as a whole. An Egypt t ourist visa from India is a must have document to visit the marvelous nation. The general steps to apply for an Egypt tourist visa from India can be found in this article. However, it is important to check the official website or contact the Embassy or Consulate of Egypt in India for the most up-to-date and accurate information regarding the Egypt Visa from India application process.

Reasons to visit Egypt

It is practically impossible to discuss a trip to Egypt without mentioning the Pyramids even in passing. The historic buildings are truly amazing, and they continue to be the topic of conversation for all tourists and visitors. The Pyramids of Giza are austere, yet stunning despite their simplicity, and have stood for more than 4500 years. These Pyramids also include the fabled Sphinx. You will be filled with amazement as you gaze upon these man-made marvels and consider the architectural feats that were done thousands of years ago.

Adventure Sports

Egypt is not merely a haven for aficionados of history and culture. Egypt has a lot to offer the youthful, modern traveller who wishes to mix in some enjoyable adventure activities with the required sightseeing. Adventure seekers will be enthralled by the variety of activities available here, including horseback and camel riding, vehicle safaris, and sandboarding in the Great Sand Sea close to Siwa Oasis. Also a favourite among tourists is the Red Sea. Coral reefs and vibrant tropical fish will captivate you for a very long time. There is no better location if you wish to dive because Egypt has some fantastic diving sites. Snorkelling is another option for people looking for less physically demanding activities. Other enjoyable water sports available here include kiteboarding, parasailing, water skiing, and windsurfing.

Going shopping and returning to your hotel room with a bag full of goods is one of the finest parts of travelling. Egypt has a vast selection of items to choose from, which makes shopping there really enjoyable while looking for gifts. The selection in Cairo’s bazaars is mind-boggling, whether you’re seeking for jewellery, leather goods, copper, brass, or any other type of item. After looking for silver or gold jewellery, proceed to the spice and perfume bazaars, where the air is infused with aroma. Among the various items you may buy in the Egyptian marketplaces are kaftans, leather jackets, handbags, and sandals. Although you would need to be cautious to ensure nothing breaks during your vacation, the glassware in this area is also extremely wonderful and should make an exotic touch to your buying.

Egyptian cuisine is a celebration of the blending of several diverse culinary traditions, including Turkish, Syrian, Lebanese, Greek, and even French, into a dish that has been adapted to suit the tastes of the Mediterranean region. There are food options all over that are wonderful and fresh. Delicious fuul madammes, a meal made with boiling fava beans, mashed with tomatoes, spices, and onions, and frequently served with a chopped boiled egg, is available in cafes and restaurants. This is a widely available, standard breakfast item. Taamiya, an Egyptian take on falafel served with pita bread, salad and tahini sauce, kushari, which is made with noodles, rice and macaroni in a hot tomato sauce, and fiteer, which is made with filo pastry and filled with cheese, peppers, eggs, olives and mince, are all delicious tidbits you should definitely check out. Fiteer can also be found in a sweet form, packed with jam or raisins and dusted with icing sugar. Of course, there is always the iconic shawarma, but there are also slightly more complex meals like kofta with hummus, tahini, and baba ghanoush or tagine with unique pigeon meat. If you have a sweet craving, you also can’t go wrong with traditional favourites like baklava, basbousa, mahalabiyya, or Umm Ali.

The Luxor Temple is one of Egypt’s most remarkably elegant architectural sites, and it was largely built by the pharaohs Ramses II (1279–1213 BC) and Amenhotep III (1390–1352 BC). King Tutankhamun, the Romans, and Alexander the Great all made changes to this temple, which is also known as the Southern Sanctuary, over time. Beautiful sandstone walls that sparkle magnificently at sunset are present at this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Aswan, located among the Nile’s sweeping curves, is the most calm town in all of Egypt. The area is surrounded by orange-hued dunes, making it the perfect place to stop, relax for a few days, and take in the laid-back atmosphere. Visit Elephantine Island by river ferry and stroll through the vivacious alleys of the Nubian settlements. On the East Bank of Aswan, ride a camel to St. Simeon’s Desert Monastery. After that, unwind while watching the feluccas with lateen sails cruising by from a riverboat café. Be sure to sail the Aswanitic islands in a felucca at sunset. This is without a doubt the most popular activity in Aswan and the most relaxing way to see the sights.

Abu Simbel

Even though the country is covered in temples, Abu Simbel is unique. The interior of this grand temple, built by Ramses II, is lavishly decorated with wall murals, while the exterior is decked with enormous statues that stand guard. Although Abu Simbel is deservedly famous for its enormous size, it is also well-known for the amazing technical achievement performed there by UNESCO in the 1960s, which involved moving the entire temple from its original location to prevent it from being submerged by the Aswan dam’s rising water. In today’s Abu Simbel, applauding the success of the global campaign to conserve the temple complex is just as important as gawking in awe at Ramses II’s magnificent construction work.

Islamic Cairo

The evocative, winding streets of the capital’s Islamic Cairo district are crammed with mosques, Islamic educational institutions, and monuments from the Fatimid to the Mameluke eras. You can find the confusing souq of Khan el-Khalili here, where coppersmiths and other artisans still run small shops filled with spices, linens, and perfume. A network of roads encircling the market is home to some of the most exquisitely preserved Islamic architecture. There is a tonne of history to learn about in this place. Visit the magnificent Sultan Hassan and Al-Azhar Mosques, and be sure to climb to the roof of the venerable mediaeval gate of Bab Zuweila for the best views of the area dotted with minarets.

Egypt has other pyramids to its credit in addition to the well-known Giza Pyramids. It takes one day to travel from Cairo to Saqqara, a sizable necropolis of tombs and pyramids that was used throughout each era of pharaonic rule. Its most well-known feature is the Old Kingdom Step Pyramid, which exhibits how Ancient Egyptian architects developed their engineering skills to eventually create a true pyramid shape. The Mastaba of Ti, one of the nearby tombs, has some of the best tomb murals you will ever see, so there is much more to see than just the Step Pyramid. While at Saqqara, you should visit both the Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid, which are both in the nearby Dahshur pyramid site.

Egyptian Museum

Cairo’s Egyptian Museum is a treasure trove of the Pharaonic civilization and has one of the largest museum collections in the entire world. The crumbling pink palace in the heart of Cairo is home to a mind-boggling array of artefacts. There is little labelling, and there is a serious lack of chronological order in this disorganised area. Around every corner is an incredible work of ancient art or a statue that would be the highlight of any museum.. The trove of golden artefacts recovered from Tutankhamen’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings is the centrepiece of the museum. Travellers should be aware that the wealth of the Egyptian Museum is currently being moved to the brand-new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Giza, close to the pyramids.

White Desert National Park

White Desert National Park, located south of Bahariya Oasis in the Western Desert, is Egypt’s quirkiest natural wonder. It looks like icebergs have become stranded in the middle of a sandy environment where bizarrely sculpted chalk pinnacles and huge boulders tower over the desert plateau.. This incredibly beautiful area, which resembles something from a science fiction film, is a favourite location for desert excursions and overnight camping since Bahariya Oasis makes it simple to arrange both activities. Anyone who has had their fill of tombs and temples will appreciate this breathtaking natural environment, while desert enthusiasts and adventurers will find it to be the ultimate odd playground.

This seaside city, which was founded by Alexander the Great, was also the birthplace of Cleopatra. Even though there are currently not many historical relics of Alexandria’s illustrious past left to see, its long Corniche seafront road leading to its fort remains a well-liked summer destination for Egyptians and foreign visitors alike to enjoy cooling sea breezes. In this area, fascinating artefacts have been added to Alexandria’s museums by underwater archaeological projects. The eerie catacombs site is one of the town’s few historical sites, and the enormous old library of Alexandria has been modernised into the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

Temple of Osiris

One of the most intriguing aesthetic artefacts from ancient Egypt is the Temple of Osiris in Abydos. The temple built by Seti I is situated inside a sizable necropolis where ongoing archaeological research is being done. The Temple of Osiris is the main attraction for most visitors, despite the fact that there are numerous other temple ruins to discover in this region. In its hypostyle halls, which are embellished with papyrus-headed columns and feature figures depicting the pharaoh and the gods of ancient Egypt, one can see some of the best relief work in Egypt. Due to its location north of Luxor and away from the typical cruise ship route, the temple receives significantly fewer visitors than the temples in Luxor and the Nile-side temples to the south.

In conclusion, visiting Egypt is an unforgettable experience that offers a rich blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From the awe-inspiring pyramids of Giza to the magnificent temples of Luxor and the serene waters of the Nile River, Egypt is a country that captivates the imagination and leaves a lasting impression. During your visit, you will have the opportunity to explore the iconic landmarks that have stood the test of time, marvel at the architectural wonders of the ancient Egyptians and gain a deeper understanding of their civilization. The Great Sphinx, the Valley of the Kings, and the temples of Abu Simbel are just a few of the remarkable sites that showcase Egypt’s extraordinary heritage.

Beyond its historical treasures, Egypt also offers vibrant cities where old meets new. Cairo, with its bustling markets, fascinating museums, and lively street life, provides a glimpse into modern Egyptian culture. You had the chance to sample delicious local cuisine, savoring traditional dishes like koshary, falafel, and kofta. The warm hospitality of the Egyptian people added to the charm of your visit, as they welcomed you with open arms and shared their stories and traditions. Whether you interacted with locals in small villages or engaged in conversations with knowledgeable guides, you gained a deeper appreciation for the country’s rich tapestry of customs and beliefs. Moreover, Egypt’s natural landscapes provided breathtaking moments of beauty. From the tranquil beauty of the Red Sea coastline with its vibrant coral reefs and marine life to the stunning desert landscapes of the Western Desert and the Sinai Peninsula, you were able to connect with nature in a unique way.

While there may have been challenges and differences in cultural norms and practices, your visit to Egypt allowed you to broaden your horizons, challenge preconceived notions, and embrace a new perspective. It served as a reminder of the incredible diversity and complexity of our world. As you bid farewell to Egypt, you carry with you cherished memories, a deeper understanding of the country’s history and culture, and the desire to return one day. Egypt’s timeless beauty and the warm hospitality of its people will continue to beckon travelers from around the world, inviting them to embark on a transformative journey through this extraordinary land.

Embassy of india in egypt, safety and precautionary measures to be undertaken in egypt.

Egypt is a fascinating country making it a popular destination amongst tourists worldwide. It offers a variety of sightseeing and entertainment options. Be it temples, tombs, the desert, the Nile River or ancient monuments, Egypt is like a gem, exploring which gives you abundant pleasure. However, before planning your trip, you must take all the necessary safety precautions to enjoy it to the fullest.

Currently, travellers are advised to exercise a high degree of caution when travelling to this country due to the terrorism threat and volatile security situations.

The Governorate of North Sinai is currently a hotspot for terrorist activity and military operations, avoiding travelling to this region.

The country's border areas are also unsafe and volatile; hence avoid travelling.

Civil unrest, terrorism, and scams have been significant threats in recent years.

There is a significant presence of armed forces throughout the country, and curfews can be imposed on short notice.

Violent crime rates in Egypt are relatively low; however, petty crimes like purse snatching, pickpocketing, etc., are not common but are on the rise.

Travel in small groups, and avoid travelling alone, especially at night.

Dress conservatively, particularly while visiting religious sites.

Keep your passport handy.

Make electronic copies of all your documents.

Research and plan properly before visiting any place.

Maintain easy access to the Indian Embassy's contact details.

Before your trip, stay informed about the nation's latest political and economic environment.

The Need for Travel Insurance to Visit Egypt from India

Egypt is a dream destination for many travellers due to its rich and ancient history, magnificent landmarks, mouthwatering cuisine, and endless shopping experience. However, before you plan a trip to one of the world's most fascinating places, ensure you have everything charted out well.

Even though travel insurance is not mandatory for international travellers travelling to Egypt, having one is highly recommended. The Egypt government does not call for any official minimum coverage requirement, but having travelling insurance for the duration of your stay is recommended.

Below are a few reasons for buying this insurance for Egypt:

Medical emergencies: Medical emergencies come unannounced, which is the primary reason most international travellers buy travel medical insurance. This insurance typically covers hospitalisation costs, treatment costs, emergency medical evacuations and minor surgeries.

Healthcare situation: The public healthcare system in Egypt is challenged by poor infrastructure, a lack of medical professionals and low quality of care and treatment. However, private hospitals have decent facilities but may charge higher fees and treatment costs to the travellers, thus stressing the need for insurance plans with medical evacuation.

Mishandling or loss of luggage: A long-haul trip can lead to mishandling or loss of your luggage. This may pose an additional financial challenge. International travel insurance reimburses the cost of buying necessary personal items. In case of loss of passport, you get guidance and financial help in getting a new passport in a foreign land.

Trip cancellation: A last-minute trip cancellation refund is only sometimes possible with your tour operator or airlines. Thus, travellers prefer insurance to protect them against trip cancellation expenses.

Flight delays: Sometimes, unusually longer delays may force you to book a stay at the nearest hotel. This unforeseen expense can be worrisome financially; for which travel insurance provides a cover.

Benefits of Purchasing Tata AIG Egypt Travel Medical Insurance

COVID-19 coverage: Since the COVID-19 cases worldwide have reduced considerably, countries have removed COVID-19 restrictions, and things are now back to normal. But, precautions, medical help and adequate coverage are still a must. Our COVID-19 cover compensates for the medical expenses incurred if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 during your trip. Additional coverage for trip cancellation, curtailment, and automatic policy extension is also included if diagnosed with the virus.

Medical coverage: Our policy covers accidents, illness, dental emergencies, minor surgeries, medical evacuations, or accidental death and repatriation. Moreover, if the policy expires while you are hospitalised overseas, we can extend the cover for up to 60 days or until you get discharged, whichever is earlier.
