Hospitality management degrees are designed to train future leaders in the hospitality industry.

Running a company in any segment of the hospitality industry requires not only financial and marketing prowess, but also an understanding of how to create an inviting environment for guests.
The art and science of hosting strangers is an essential skill for people working in many kinds of businesses, including airlines, casinos, cruise ships, festivals, hotels and restaurants.
Running a company in any segment of the hospitality industry requires not only financial and marketing prowess, but also an understanding of how to create an inviting environment for guests. Cultivating that marketable skill set is the goal of associate, bachelor's and graduate programs in hospitality management.
What a Hospitality Management Degree Is and What Classes It Requires
The goal of any course of study in hospitality management is to train people to create and maintain spaces where others will immediately feel at home.
“Understanding how to take care of the customer is a foundational aspect of the hospitality discipline,” Angela Ramsey, senior director of communication at the University of Nevada—Las Vegas William F. Harrah College of Hospitality, explained in an email.
Hospitality management degrees are, foremost, degrees in business, says Michael Sabitoni, chair of the food and beverage management department and the international travel and tourism studies department at Johnson & Wales University in Rhode Island. They include classes in accounting, finance, human resources, law and technology, he says.
However, unlike a general business degree, a hospitality degree typically includes specialized coursework focusing on the hospitality industry, such as classes on food service business operations, event management principles, and hotel and resort leadership, Sabitoni says. An overview class about tourism is also typically included in hospitality management programs, and industry internships are often mandatory, he adds.
Many hospitality degree programs require students to participate in experiential learning by helping to operate a student-run hotel or restaurant. They may also contain classes on:
- Eco-tourism or sustainable travel
- Global tourism and special considerations involved with international trips
- Customer service protocols
- Assessing the quality of guest experiences
- Specific types of hospitality establishments, such as country clubs, golf courses, resorts, stadiums, timeshares or theme parks
- Nuances involved in planning certain kinds of events, such as conventions or weddings
- Concerns that face certain demographics of customers, including women and people of color
- Various types of tourism, including business trips and visits to cultural destinations or historical sites
Top Undergraduate Schools With Hospitality Management Majors
Many U.S. colleges and universities allow undergraduates to major in hospitality management, including multiple nationally renowned academic institutions. Cornell University of New York, an Ivy League college, has a school devoted to hospitality.
Exceptional hospitality programs are often based in major metropolitan areas that attract significant tourism. For example, New York University and Boston University in Massachusetts offer a hospitality management degree.
How to Know if a Hospitality Management Degree Is Right for You
An interest in the food and beverage sector, a love for travel or an interest in entertaining people may lead someone to consider pursuing a degree in hospitality management. But prospective students should be aware that the hospitality sector has leadership roles for people with all kinds of interests and personalities.
Though some managerial positions in the hospitality industry are customer-facing jobs that require significant people skills, there are also back-of-the-house managerial jobs that concentrate on logistics, Sabitoni says.
Significant cultural awareness and strong communication abilities are essential in hospitality. Foreign language skills are also valuable but not mandatory, Sabitoni says.
What You Can Do With a Hospitality Management Degree
Hospitality programs are designed to train future leaders in the sector.
“It can include anything within the hospitality vertical, from hotel investment companies to real estate firms to our big brands which are the Marriotts, the Hiltons, the Four Seasons, to data analytics companies to Googles to Amazons,” says Kate Walsh, dean of the Peter and Stephanie Nolan School of Hotel Administration at Cornell. “Anything that touches hospitality as a part of their business product is something where our students get involved.”
Real estate investment firms often invest in hotel buildings, so people with degrees in hospitality management sometimes find jobs in the real estate sector, Walsh says. Alumni of hospitality management programs sometimes become management consultants who concentrate on assisting companies in the hospitality industry, she adds.
Executive and director roles in the industry typically require at least a bachelor's degree. Many high-level leadership positions at U.S. hospitality firms pay annual salaries above $70,000, according to an article published by Monster.com, a job website.
In 2020, graduates of Cornell's Nolan School had an average base salary of slightly over $69,000 and an average bonus of nearly $15,000, according to the school's employment report .
Considerations for Potential Hospitality Students
Aspiring hospitality managers should be aware of trends that may affect them when they enter the industry, experts say.
This sector has severe labor shortages at hotels and restaurants, many of which laid off workers due to pandemic-related safety measures and now have struggled to replace those workers even after raising wages.
Because of these staffing concerns, many hospitality companies have introduced initiatives to recruit and retain talented staff, improve working conditions, increase job satisfaction and reduce employee turnover, Walsh says.
When comparing hospitality programs, prospective students should investigate whether those programs include experiential learning opportunities, experts say, noting that hands-on projects are one of the best ways to gain hospitality skills. It’s also optimal if hospitality schools offer courses on design, which can inform aesthetic choices about how a hospitality venue looks, according to experts.
“I think the industry needs innovative thinkers," Walsh says. "They need people who think big culturally, who are comfortable with different modes of work, so it’s a great time to join the industry. The industry is trying to be extremely intentional in providing compelling career paths.”

Other Teaching Qualifications (Description of Required Academic Degree and Justifications 4 for the programs in Hospitality and Tourism Management)
Consideration of other teaching qualifications in lieu of academic credentials is made on a case-by-case basis and accepted in special cases where evidence of exceptional industry experience, research or other qualifications can be documented and are directly applicable to the course being taught.
1 Whenever instructors are not credentialed by their advanced degree or by an approved CIP relationship, they must be credentialed through a narrative justification of the instructor's qualifications to teach this/these course(s). Such credentialing is based on the proposed instructor's academic and professional preparation; diplomas, certificates, or relevant licensures; publications and presentations in the field; honors, awards, and professional recognitions; and other demonstrated competencies, skills, and experiences which the instructor brings to the University. These must be clearly tied to the specific courses to be taught and should establish beyond doubt that the instructor is qualified to teach the specific courses they are to be assigned.
The Office of the Provost reviews all such justifications and where the justifications warrant the instructor's teaching the courses proposed, it will either approve the justification for the appropriate period (seven years for full-time faculty members, or four years for part-time faculty members) or employ one of two additional clearance categories beyond the advanced degree and related-discipline categories which it may use to credential some instructors where their accomplishments warrant this:
Active Research Clearance in the Discipline or Active Artistic/Special Talent Clearance in the Discipline
2 The level and discipline of the terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., MS, MFA, doctorate) that is required to teach graduate courses in the discipline
3 For each discipline, all strongly-related degree(s) and/or equivalent names for the discipline (include level) that would also be appropriate for teaching at the graduate level
4 (1)The appropriate academic degrees and justifications for each related degree above if not obvious; (2) the justification for why the terminal degree is not a doctorate in a discipline, e.g., specific examples of best practice in the discipline and accrediting association language; and (3) any other criteria used to determine appropriate academic qualifications to teach specialty courses in the program.

Hospitality and Tourism Management
WEBSITE: http://www.sdsu.edu/htm
Hospitality and tourism management is an interdisciplinary major which culminates in a Bachelor of Science degree offered by the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts. This program provides students with a solid undergraduate program emphasizing basic business management principles and their specific application to the hospitality and tourism industry and its components that make up the industry. The program integrates a significant number of courses from diverse disciplines into a comprehensive theoretical and applied program necessary for success in the hospitality and tourism professions. The program is directed at management positions in the industry, positions that require a broad understanding of management and its application to the businesses and organizations that flourish in this sector of the international, national, state, and local economies.
Students select one of the following emphasis areas for in-depth study: Hotel Operations and Management; Meetings and Events Operations and Management; Restaurant Operations and Management; or Tribal Gaming Operations and Management. With a solid core of business management courses and theoretical and applied study of the broad hospitality and tourism industry, students are educated to move readily into management positions in one of the state’s, nation’s, and world’s fastest growing economic sectors. The hotel and restaurant emphases will prepare managers to effectively administer businesses that provide lodging and food services to business and leisure travelers and tourists. The emphasis in meetings and events operations and management is aimed at preparing individuals to successfully manage destination based agencies that attract and entertain guests in a host region (convention centers, bureaus, festivals, sporting events, etc.). The tribal gaming emphasis prepares students to maximize the economic and social outcomes of tribal gaming facilities, which operate in a unique tribal government-owned business environment.
All students admitted to the university with a declared major in hospitality and tourism management must attend an advising meeting with the undergraduate advisers in the school every semester.

NOTE ALSO: A college level statistics course will be accepted from another department CIV E 160 ; ECON 201 ; LING 270 ; POL S 201 ; SOC 201 ; STAT 250 ). These courses cannot be taken for credit/no credit (Cr/NC);
- Complete a minimum of 60 transferable semester units;
- Have a cumulative GPA of 2.7;
- Students who meet all requirements except the GPA may request to be placed on the waiting list. To complete the major, students must fulfill the degree requirements for the major described in the catalog in effect at the time they are accepted into the premajor at SDSU (assuming continuous enrollment).
Internships
A significant portion of the student’s educational program is dedicated to community-based learning components termed internships. Prior to the first internship, students must complete 400 hours of work experience (see school adviser for details). Each student must complete two, 300+ hour internships in hospitality and tourism businesses. These experiential learning components enable students to apply their classroom education to real world experiences in actual businesses. The HTM program has purposely entered into partnerships with San Diego’s finest hospitality and tourism enterprises to provide students with specialized facilities and experiences that complete a well-rounded and comprehensive educational experience for graduation and entry into this rewarding profession.
Major Academic Plans (MAPs)
Visit http://www.sdsu.edu/mymap for the recommended courses needed to fulfill your major requirements. The MAPs website was created to help students navigate the course requirements for their majors and to identify which General Education course will also fulfill a major preparation course requirement.
Recreation and Tourism Management
A commitment to working with people to enhance the quality of their lives is important to a study of recreation and tourism.
Increasingly diverse opportunities are available in the recreation and tourism profession. The major offers a sufficiently wide range of courses for students who may wish to enter diverse recreation, tourism, or human services fields.
Students in this major elect one of three areas of emphasis. The outdoor resource management emphasis stresses conservation, natural science, ecology, and recreation/park administration. Society’s efforts to sustain a balance between the environment and recreational use are studied. Graduates find employment as naturalists, outdoor education specialists, outdoor resource management planners, park interpreters, and park rangers.
Recreation systems management stresses the effective organization, administration, and supervision of recreation, park, and tourism agencies, both public and private. Graduates find employment as administrators and supervisors with public, private or commercial park and recreation agencies. They assume professional positions with youth and family serving agencies, private clubs and condominium associations, a variety of leisure related businesses including tourism agencies, and municipal, county, and state organizations.
Sustainable tourism management prepares students to work in tourism, recreation, cultural, natural resource, and sports settings. It stresses the cultural and ecological tourism leadership needs of new tourism professionals by emphasizing the linkages between the economic, environmental, and social (including cultural and political) spheres and involves an interdisciplinary approach. Students learn about assessment, programming, and evaluation for planning and management of sustainable tourism businesses. Graduates find employment as managers and directors with transportation agencies, destination management organizations, travel and tour companies, tourism attractions, leisure, recreation, and sports organizations, cultural industries, adventure and ecotourism services, and lodging enterprises.
The sustainable tourism management emphasis requires international experience. Refer to the international experience section under the requirements for the Emphasis in Sustainable Tourism Management.
All students admitted to the university with a declared major in recreation administration must attend an advising meeting with the undergraduate advisers in the school every semester.
The recreation administration major and emphases are impacted programs. To be admitted to the recreation administration major or an emphasis, students must meet the following criteria:
- Complete preparation for the major;
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.3.

The faculty also heads the Malaysian Centre of Tourism and Hospitality Education (MyCenTHE) – a consortium that comprises many leading hotel and culinary schools. The initiative was established to reshape Malaysia’s hospitality and tourism industry through education.
In other words, UCSI aims to raise the aspiration levels and life chances of every individual by providing education for a better future.
CHAMPION OF EPP10: TAKING THE NATION FORWARD WITH MyCenTHE
UCSI University's Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management (FHTM) is proud to be part of the national initiative to reshape Malaysia’s tourism and hospitality industry through education. To match the industry's projected growth, at least 50,000 skilled industry personnel must enter the workforce by 2020 – up from the current 20,000. And to raise the aspiration levels and life chances of these individuals, they need a better education.
To this end, UCSI is heading a consortium of leading hotel schools under the Malaysian Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Education (MyCenTHE) umbrella - a collaborative partnership that was established under Education: Entry Point Project (EPP10) in the Economic Transformation Programme. MyCenTHE was launched with the aim of providing Malaysia's expanding tourism and hospitality industry with quality human capital. This initiative also seeks to equip at least 50% of all industry personnel with the minimum qualification of a diploma by 2020.
As the champion of EPP10, the Faculty's work-based learning curriculum is used as the benchmark for other MyCenTHE members. To achieve national impact, clusters are established in each state and the Faculty takes pride in the launch of the first successful hub in Sarawak.
- Education: Entry Point Project (EPP10): Building a Hospitality and Tourism Cluster
- To increase in annual output of hospitality personnel from 2009: 20,000 to 2020: 50,000.
- To share of graduates with diplomas or degrees from 13 to 50%.
UCSI University was appointed by the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education on 28 November 2010 to lead this government initiative. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak endorsed the appointment during a media briefing on 30 November 2010 at Hilton Hotel Kuala Lumpur with UCSI Group Chairman Dato' Peter Ng.

Sona Shaji, Student of Professional Study Programme Tourism (English programme)
Being lucky to get picked up from the airport by the Dean and getting all help to overcome all the obstacles, all the members of FT Team work with their heart and serve such great hospitality to the international students.
Lectures are divided into two parts, main lecture and tutorials, even if you miss the main lecture, never miss the tutorials. The course is more practically oriented not just theoretical, and that's what I love the most.
Studying in Slovenia was entirely a different experience for me. Unlike the common study destinations, Slovenia is a unique country for international students. Slovenia and FT UM will be always in my heart, “The Home Away from Home”.
Aleksa Panić, Teaching assistant Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Singidunum University, Belgrade
My studies at the FT UM taught me about the importance of responsible and sustainable management and planning of tourist destinations. I think that the faculty is highly qualified to teach in the area of green and environmentally-friendly tourism and has outstanding experts, while Slovenia is the best place to see the results of such organising and efforts.
I would like to use what I have learned at FT UM to help improve results in this area in Serbia and to increase awareness of the importance of this approach among young people, especially those who want to be actively involved in tourism.
Collaboration with professors and teaching assistants (participation in international conferences) was also important for my subsequent academic work. They offered me several opportunities to write research papers on tourism which were received with acclaim.
Debora Gambaletta, Erasmus incoming postgraduate student
I was a student in my second year of graduate master's study, I stayed for 6 unforgettable months. I had the opportunity to meet new people from Europe and the world and exchange experiences, learn about other customs and cultures.
Erasmus+ coordinator at Faculty of Tourism was very kind, available at all times and willing to help. I am sure to take advantage of this unforgettable opportunity that will surely change your perception of your life.
Yana Fedyushkina, Student of Professional Study Programme Contemporary Tourism Practices (English programme)
My studies at FT UM turned out to be deeper than I expected. All professors provide extensive coverage of their subjects. Learning is not easy, but it only grows the desire to learn new things.
I am very happy with the opportunity to study online as I am not currently in Slovenia. All classes are perfectly organized, professors instruct in detail about the tasks for the semester, provide all the necessary materials for studies, and conduct classes in an involving way. Therefore, we should only absorb knowledge.

Eichler new assistant professor of the practice in Department of Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism
Brings more than 30 years of hospitality, hotel management experience .
December 13, 2023 - by Paul Schattenberg
The Department of Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism in the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences continues to build itself into one of the country’s top programs by hiring Dan Eichler as an assistant professor of the practice.
Eichler brings more than 30 years of experience in the hospitality industry, with almost 20 years in management or director-level positions. He also has more than 10 years of experience as a college instructor.
“As an assistant professor of the practice, Dan brings a rich and diverse professional background in the hospitality industry to benefit our students and bring the department the wisdom that only comes with practical experience,” said Brian King, Ph.D., head of the Department of Hospitality, Hotel Management and Tourism. “He also brings extensive contacts in the hospitality industry, which will enhance our efforts to garner even more attention for our department and further reinforce its position as one of the top programs in the country.”
Professional experience in hotel management, hospitality
In joining the department, Eichler said he will draw from his extensive background in the industry and share that with the students.
“I believe that learning is greatly enhanced by relating real-life experiences to concepts and bringing them to life,” he said. “I like to use relevant topics and personal examples to emphasize the importance of the subjects being presented. I am passionate about the hospitality industry and desire to share that passion with students and help them succeed in an industry I love.”
Prior to joining the department, Eichler was director of sales and marketing for the Wyndham Garden Hotel in College Station, where he was responsible for opening, soliciting and negotiating contracts for the 135-room hotel.
Before that, he served as general manager of The Langford in College Station, where he was responsible for all aspects of a 114-unit senior living community in four key areas: resident satisfaction, engaged staff, favorable financial results and managing clinical care for those living in assisted living and memory care.
Eichler also has experience as corporate director of sales and marketing for Oldham Goodwin in College Station, where he oversaw a portfolio of 11 multibranded hotels with annual sales of over $29 million. Additionally, he was general manager for White Lodging-Courtyard Austin South and the Valencia Hotel Group-Hampton Inn and Suites Austin-Airport, both in Austin.
His further industry experience has been as an assistant general manager, sales manager and director, assistant front office manager and restaurant operations supervisor.
“My 30 years in the hospitality industry have afforded me numerous real-life experiences, as well as knowing about the experiences of others in the industry, that I can share with my students. Besides knowing best practices in the hospitality industry, I also have seen many worst-case scenarios, and often these negative experiences provide the best learning opportunities.”
College-level teaching experience, professional affiliations
Eichler has a master’s degree in hospitality management from the University of Houston and a bachelor’s in business administration with a focus on marketing from Baylor University.
He has 10 years of experience providing higher education instruction. Most recently, he has been an adjunct professor at Blinn College , where he taught Introduction to Hospitality and Convention and Group Management Services. He was previously an adjunct professor at Austin Community College, where he taught Purchasing and Front Office Procedures as well as Introduction to Hospitality and Hospitality Internship.
Additionally, while pursuing his master’s degree, Eichler was a teaching assistant who helped in the training and performance evaluation of 50 students in all aspects of fine dining service. Eichler is a board member and past-president of the Brazos Valley Hospitality Association. He also served on the board for the Texas Hotel and Lodging Association and Austin Hotel and Lodging Association.
