Swan Mountain Outfitters

Montana Guided Elk Hunting

family elk hunting trips

These are among the most rugged Montana elk hunts, and we often describe them as “extreme” hunts. Our hunts are guided in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Swan Valley areas of Montana off of horseback. Our guides and horses have been preparing and getting shape all summer long on backcountry pack trips, elk season is what they’ve been waiting for!

Montana Elk

Our elk herds are in better shape today than they have been in thirty years! Our hunting areas also support ample populations of whitetail and mule deer and color phase black bear, increasing the chances of success across species. This terrain is more challenging to hunt elk in, no doubt, no flat land here. We utilize our horses to search the front range of the Bob Marshall for elk. With exclusive access in the areas where we hunt, Swan Mountain Outfitters is able to offer archery elk hunters perhaps one of the most unique and best opportunities to bag an elk of a lifetime with a bow. As the season progresses, migration of elk begins and affords our late season elk hunters an opportunity to bag an elk at lower altitudes.

Our Montana Guided Elk Hunts

All of our Montana elk hunts require more or less rigor and we offer elk hunting in three distinct seasons:

  • Our season starts with archery elk hunting.
  • We then offer rifle elk hunts in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The Bob Marshall is one of the few areas in the country where you can rifle hunt elk during the rut.
  • Our last hunting season is during the general Montana hunting season.

We offer combination hunts in which you can target mule deer, whitetail, and bear as well. Some of our hunters have snagged a wolf tag too! Many of our elk hunters bring both their rifle and bow. Multi weapon hunts are popular with elk hunters that like to maximize their opportunity.

We like to get deep into the back country and utilize spike camps. This can get us in closer proximity to the elk for opening day. This spike camp strategy has produced many harvested elk in seasons past, but does lack the comforts of traditional hunting camps.

Not sure you can handle the physical rigor of our Montana wilderness elk hunting? You might consider a later season guided elk hunt, when mother nature brings the elk out of the high country and into proximity of our base camp. The hours in the saddle and elevation gained in hiking is lessened, and the base camp has a few more modern amenities than our upper camp and spike camps. These are good first time elk hunts for youth elk hunters. An extra bonus is that our base camp is in the heart of whitetail deer territory for hunters looking to combination hunt.

Archery Elk

Archery hunting elk, requiring close proximity to the animal, is, by its very nature, quite different from hunting these animals using a rifle. Successful archery hunts require excellent calling abilities and guides who know the difference between techniques utilized for archery versus rifle hunts.

Archery hunts necessitate minimizing over exposure of hunting areas and minimizing scent control and noise. For these reasons, we only take two hunters to each of our “archery only” designated areas.

We have experimented with various styles of guided archery elk hunts and we believe we have landed upon an offering that delivers the ultimate archery elk hunting experience in Montana. Even though the season is actually longer, we focus solely on the time frame surrounding the rut to maximize our opportunity: we offer three sessions of 7-day archery only hunts. Note that this boils down to 5 days of solid hunting as the rest of the time is spent getting to and from the area. We employ two-on-one guiding as we have found it is the best way to maximize our hunters opportunities to be successful.

With limited space, our archery elk hunts are the first to book up. We typically have been booked two years in advance, so don’t wait!

Our specialists suggest finding a hunting outfitter that provides all the necessities you need, along with advice on how you can adequately prepare. If you work with an experienced outfitter, you’ll get the best bang for your buck. West Canyon Ranch will help outfit you for our guided trips and provide a list of other things you might need to bring, including field dress, choice of rifle, and any other items.

Do You Provide Tags?

As a high-fence Utah ranch, West Canyon takes all the hassle out of hunting. Not only are the big game larger in size, but the managed herds are healthier and more mature. Hunters often spend precious time waiting to get an elk permit, but hunting at a high-fence ranch eliminates all of the waiting. West Canyon Ranch issues our own permits so you can get straight to hunting without worrying about licenses and tags.

Other Hunting Trips we Offer

West Canyon Ranch offers a selection of guided hunting trip packages with customized options to ensure your hunt is everything you envisioned and more.

While there aren’t many private hunting outfitters that boast the accommodations and amenities that make the cost worthwhile, West Canyon Ranch commits to making our guided hunting trips well-worth the effort.

Where to hunt elk.

The North American Elk are gradually reclaiming their historical habitat across America, but so far most elk hunting is done in the Rocky Mountain states from Arizona and New Mexico to Idaho and Montana, and the Canadian provinces of BC and Alberta. You can also hunt elk in New Zealand, where it was introduced along with other species of deer, or its next of kin, the Siberian Wapiti, in Russia and Kazakhstan.

Let us inspire you

There's not much more exciting than being in the woods during the elk rut. Being in the presence of bugling bull elk will get any hunter's heart pumping. If you've dreamed of hunting elk, watch this video, then let BookYourHunt get you on the mountain to experience this adrenaline filled adventure for yourself!

Price distribution

Depending on location and trip length, most cow elk hunts are in $1,000-$2,000 range, and a 5-day trophy bull elk hunt will set you back around $5,000 and up. Note that some elk hunting trips are self-guided, where the outfitter only takes you out in the wilderness, sets camp, etc., while other offers do not include the tag.

Special offers

Tags, licenses and rules.

Most elk tags are distributed by random draw. However, there are options to buy elk tags over the counter , including landowner's tags. Many outfitters use these options, and if you haven't been lucky with the draw, chances are you can still find an outfitted elk hunt with tags included. Some states set minimum limits to the number of points the bull must have before it can be legally harvested.

When to hunt Elk?

The best time to hunt a trophy bull elk is during the rut, when the bulls challenge each other for dominance. The rut takes place in September and October in most areas, and this is usually considered the best time. Cold weather works better for elk hunting, because the bulls bugle more readily and the animals are more active in general, besides, it's easier to preserve the valuable meat. However, archery seasons may start as early as mid-August, and in many places the season doesn't end until December.

Hunting methods All hunting methods (15)

A typical elk hunt takes place well out in the wilderness, and often implies living in a tent camp and riding horses in the true Western style. Trophy bulls are usually taken during the rut, when dominant bulls gather large harems of cows, and guard them against competing bulls. The best elk guides typically combine stalking with calling, using both bull bugle and cow calls to attract a dominant bulls. Cow hunts are usually a classic stalk. A hunter with archery or other short-range gear may also hunt elk from a ground or tree stand, usually over a waterhole.

Hunting at dry creek ranch

We offer many different hunts including elk, deer, bear and antelope. On a 5 day, fully guided hunt, you have the option to choose what hunt best suits you. Options include day trips while staying at our lodge on the ranch with fresh cooked meals and hot showers, or, if seeking more adventure, riding miles into the mountains on horse back and staying at a camp. Either way, we give you a chance to experience breathtaking views and hunting some of the most sought after game.

With permits from the National Park and Forest Service, Dry Creek Ranch is able to offer great public land hunting opportunities. The areas that we target on public land are very secluded, we use years of experience, horses and the proper gear to navigate our way into the terrain most hunters don’t even consider. The preparation that goes into making our public land hunt’s successful starts by the guides spending countless nights sleeping under the stars in the backcountry during the summer watching the elk’s patterns and the antler development of the bulls. If you are looking for an experience of a lifetime in the wilderness this would be a good hunt to consider. For more information about our public hunts please visit the HUNTS tab.

Why Hunt at C Lazy U Ranch?

An elk bugling in the woods at a Colorado hunting ranch

C Lazy U Outfitters offers inclusive big game hunting trips for elk, mule deer and pronghorn antelope in Colorado, with archery, muzzle loader and rifle hunts from September through November. Our guided hunting trips are led by experienced guides in a fair-chase environment on predominately private land, with some public land on the property boundaries.

Bring home a trophy mule deer, thanks to C Lazy U's substantial resident herd and the migratory route that bisects the property, which brings in those elusive monster bucks.

  • Bring your family! They will love the non-hunting activities we offer, which even includes a supervised kids' program so your significant other can have some alone time.
  • Custom hunts are our specialty! From mobility issues to combo hunts, we work with you every step of the way to ensure you have the experience of a lifetime.
  • We are passionate about rendering excellent hunts through the practice of sustainable hunting, and manage our free-range herds and their habitats year-round.

We look forward to welcoming you to the ranch for your once-in-a-lifetime guided hunting trip in Colorado.

The signature C Lazy U hunt is one of our premier guided elk hunts, thanks to Colorado's large elk population. Because we are located just 10 miles from Rocky Mountain National Park, we have some of the largest migrating elk herds crossing our 16,000 acres—and when elk hunting in Colorado at C Lazy U , you'll see bulls ranging from 200” to 300” in size! Our world-class hunting guides can accommodate all hunter needs and styles, guiding archery, muzzle loader and rifle elk hunting trips.

Combo Elk & Mule Deer

The C Lazy U Ranch is one of the best mule deer habitats in Colorado: year after year, we see trophy mule deer roll in for the rut. While on Colorado mule deer hunts at C Lazy U Ranch, you will see mule deer ranging in size from 150” to 190” — and even larger. To maintain a quality deer population, we offer approximately eight rifle guided deer hunts each year.

Pronghorn Antelope

Similar to our elk and mule deer herds, we have several pronghorn antelope that summer on the sage flats of the C Lazy U Ranch. We accommodate 1-3 hunters per year depending on interest and successful landowner tag applications. Our fully guided hunts are designed around 3 days in early October. Please call for more information on this hunt.

Our First-Hand Experience

After several trips here on three different dates, we can say with certainty that this family owned and operated lodge is as honest as they come.  They do the right thing!

On our second and third trip, we took advantage of some Elk and deer hunting in the mountains. We stayed both at the very nice main lodge as well as the spike cabins atop the mountain sides.  Our days were spent hiking the mountains from the top down. The altitude was an adjustment for both of us but we managed to spot quite a few elk and tag a beautiful 6×6 after numerous invigorating stalks through the snow.  We had an opportunity at a really cool whitetail but we chose not to shoot it to give it another year to mature The guides are experienced and hike like mountain goats but adjusted their pace to meet ours.  It was a very rewarding trip with an awesome free-range elk to show for or effort.

This is one of our favorite Elk experiences but it is and adventure and if the weather doesn’t cooperate you just have to enjoy the challenge!

As the elk pile out of Yellowstone when the snows come, they settle into this basin where Montana Elk hunting is prime.  Located in Tom Miner Basin Montana, this owner operated Montana elk hunting lodge offers all the benefits of a horseback Montana elk and mule deer hunt without the need to ride horses for long hours to get to your spike campsite!

Montana Elk Hunting Lodge - Bozeman

Rifle hunts (5 full days) are both 2×1 guided. For an additional fee you can have a 1×1 hunt. They are hunting a combination of private ground they own, private ground they lease, and public ground to which they have exclusive access. The total area they hunt on is over 20 square miles.

They use jeeps and trucks to get around the ranch and have two argos with snow tracks in case they have to get somewhere tough. While good physical condition always helps on a high elevation mountain hunt like this one, many hunters take elk without walking much at all. They can accommodate all levels of mobility.

For the hunting family or a combination of a hunting/hiking family, this is a fantastic lodge.  Take in the clean mountain air at high altitude as you hike from one side of the basin to the other in search of the majestic trophy elk.

AGE APPROPRIATE: 14 yrs and older.

Each hunter uses the main off season fishing lodge as their home base, traveling to permanent spike camps for one or two nights. This allows all hunters to hunt every part of the ranch.

Spike camps offer double occupancy permanent cabins with outdoor plumbing, heat, generators for light and a cook.  They are very basic but are a step up from a tent.

The lodge is located just down the mountain at 6,000 feet elevation.  The lodge is set up for hunters in the winter and offers a nice atmosphere. While everyone stays at the lodge for a night or two, those that do not want to stay in a rough mountain camp can stay at the lodge for the entire trip.  The only down side to staying in the lodge for the entire trip is that your harvest opportunity rate may decrease for your elk/mule deer.  The hunters staying in the mountain camps tend to have better opportunity because they are positioned to have easier access to the game

There will be a camp cook to prepare your meals.  The meals are really exceptional camp meals.  You will not be suffering, for sure!

Rifle hunts begin in mid-October hunting the resident elk herd. As the season progresses and winter snows begin in the Yellowstone National Park mountains, the “park” elk are forced down to this prime grazing area for food. Hunters are looking for mature herd bulls which average around 320 gross B&C and that’s the outfitters goal for his clients. In 2010 there was a bull taken that scored 389 gross B&C but that is unusual.

Morning hunts normally begin with you and your guide glassing a very large meadow at daybreak. You guide may choose to stay there awhile or to go for a “spot & stalk” type of hunt until lunch. You might drive to another area to hunt as well. Afternoon hunts are normally walking to one of the large meadows and setting up to glass for the afternoon waiting for the elk to move out of the heavy timber to graze.

Please note:  This is a true free range hunt!  If the weather does not cooperate, the game does not either.  This is not a guaranteed hunt and you will work very hard for your opportunities as you hike the high altitudes!  This is a fantastic experience hunt and hopefully you will go home with a success story.  Either way, you will go home with a story of adventure!

For a free range elk hunt in the middle of the rut, you will have a high opportunity experience.  The question is, will you  make the shot?  Your heart will be racing and the altitude will make it beat harder and faster.

Wounded Animals: As with almost all big game operations if you draw blood or wound an animal you will hunt that specific animal until harvested or your hunt ends. You can not hunt another animal.

Season: Rifle season is from mid-October to late November. The last hunt of the year normally falls over Thanksgiving.

Licenses & Tags: With the November 2010 election, Montana voted to eliminate the guaranteed outfitter tags for non-residents and go with a straight forward draw system.  The deadline for tag applications for rifle and bow hunters is March 15th. The outfitter feels that hunters will have a high draw rate since 100% of the applicants did draw for the 2013 season.  If for some reason, you do not draw, you will receive a 100% for the deposit that you will have made to hold your spot.

The draw is scheduled to take place the first week of May with the results available online the first week of June.

Bow hunts are 6 Nights/7 Days Rifle hunts are 5 Nights/6 Days

Travel Arrangements: Flights, Hotels, Shuttle Service and Rental Vehicle

We recommend you fly into Bozeman, MT (BZN) the day before your hunt starts and spend the night there.  You can rent a car or have the lodge pick you up at your hotel the following morning around 10 a.m for an additional fee. The drive to the ranch is about an hour and a half. Once you arrive, you will eat lunch, sight in your rifle and begin your hunt.

On departure day you can hunt that morning if needed, pack up, eat lunch and head back to Bozeman. We suggest that you plan to spend the night in Bozeman.

Private Planes:  Livingston Airport (406)222-2440 is the closest private plane access. However, it is very windy! Most fly into Bozeman and travel from there.

Cell service is limited and there is no wifi.

What Families Are Saying About Us

family elk hunting trips

Appreciation, adoration, and gratefulness are a few words that come to mind when I think about Kevin and Corinna with Family Expeditions. I have used this family company to book several trips, and I have never been disappointed. They go above and beyond to make any hunting trip exceed all expectations.

Their attention to detail is impeccable. They take care of everything from guides for the hunt to travel accommodations. They help in any way to make sure I achieve my hunting goals/trophies. They also make sure that those trophies make it back to the United States and are handled with great care.

This family has truly helped make my dreams come true. They made sure that all of the hassle was taken care of so that I could enjoy hunting and time with my family. Without their help and guidance, I would have given up on hunts a long time ago. They provide unprecedented customer service and give you everything you want and more! – Keith, KY

“What a year! For my birthday my wife took me to New Zealand to hunt stag, tahr and chamois. We stayed at Family Expedition’s gorgeous lodge and what a FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE. Then on very short notice (2 weeks)Kevin and Corinna helped me set up a “bucket list” trip so I could go with a very good friend who is ill. We made it to Northern Quebec for caribou and bear. We had ANOTHER MEMORABLE TRIP and my friend is still hanging in there looking forward to his next adventure. Thanks to all at Family Expeditions. Looking forward to this year’s African experience.” Jeff, Texas

“We are having a wonderful time. Everything from Qatar Airlines to each individual here with us has exceeded our expectations in every way. The boys had great fortune the first full day and we are now on the hunt for Zebras. I wish I could take all of these people home with me as they are so lovely. Thank you for planning such an exciting vacation for us.”  Debra, Dallas

Guided and Unguided Hunting Trips

Upper Canyon Outfitters offers guided and unguided hunting trips for archery and/or rifle season. Our hunts include elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, antelope, moose, and mountain goat. Hunts start right out our back door. Located in the heart of southwest Montana, hunting trips from the ranch give unlimited access to the ranges of the Snowcrest, Greenhorn, and Gravelly Mountains in the Beaverhead National Forest and nearby private ranches.

The land varies from the river bottom and hay meadows to rolling sagebrush hills and high mountain plains. Then the terrain transforms into high ridges, deep canyons, scattered timber, and high mountain springs with aspen groves – ideal elk habitat. With so much ground to cover, you can choose your terrain, choose your hunt, and know that you have room to roam. The ranch is at 6000 feet elevation and we hunt up to 9000 feet. There are more than 800,000 acres of public and private land we have access to hunt.

For one of the most exciting hunts, there is nothing that compares to an archery bugling bull hunt.

Mule Deer are also abundant in our area, and we get a number of respectable bucks. Area #330 is a general permit area and area #324 is a permit-only area and UCO will help you with this process.

I can’t put into words how much I’ve enjoyed my visits to your place over the past several years, but if it’s any indication of just how much my stay at UCO has affected me, I now think about (fondly) Upper Canyon nearly every day… really. The whole experience, starting from the travel both to and from MT, the absolute beauty of the people and MT itself, the work ethic of the local folks, etc. has left an impression on me that won’t ever be forgotten.

Our Island Park Team had a great time. You put out amazing energy for the benefit of your guests. We recognize and appreciate your effort. And thank you for all of the little details, you and your crew provide and attend to.

With wonderful memories and great times, we’d like to thank you for having us join you and your family at UCO. Just loved everything, everyone, and every minute of everyday! We had a great time with Lance. He showed us all and everything we needed to know and do. Certainly thought and showed me HOW and WHERE to find a fish. We were very lucky to have had him for our entire experience with you. So, to you both, Val and her family, the guides all the kitchen staff… thanks. We look forward to our next visit in the Upper Ruby. To you and your for having a wonderful place to park our boots!

Thank you for the wonderful Montana hospitality at the Upper Canyon Outfitters last week at the Bamboo Conclave. The fishing, food, accommodations, service and especially the companionship were all first class. I’m already looking forward to my return visit next year.

Thank you so much for making me feel so welcome here at UCO. I had no idea what to expect when I came out with Lance… but I didn’t expected to travel the entire way across the country to find another home. I think that’s what makes this place so great – your ability to also make a vacation feel similar to being right at home. Your friendliness & kindness amazed me – I really can’t say enough good things about you. You are two of the greatest people I’ve ever met.

Every year at Thanksgiving time and New Years I think back over the events that were special the past year and what I have been blessed to have in my life. Of course at the top of that list are family and friends. Then the special times that I have been able to experience. You both are in those thoughts this year on both counts. I want to “Thank You” for not only providing me with an opportunity to experience hunting in beautiful Montana with Greg, but even more importantly, your friendship, your wonderful employees and of course some of your other patrons like Les and Steve. This year my experience at Upper Canyon ranks at the top this year.

Again, thank you so much for your generosity and consideration. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Ten years ago on our first trip to UCO, your dad showed me the sot where Travis shot the bull and I shot the cow. It was both of our first elk. That year the best part of the trip was meeting and learning from him and his wisdom and experience. The respect, not just for hunting, I gained in a very short time with him made taking my first elk in “his spot” even more rewarding. I’m honored and thankful. Best wishes and thank you again.

To begin, Dennis and I can’t thank you enough for a spectacular elk hunt. Your staff and family was amazing and made us feel at home, the accommodations were great and the guides were the most hard working and professional I have ever known. The five day guided hunt was hard work due to the warm weather, but Mitch, our guide, knew where to go and how to put Dennis and I in the right place to bring down a magnificent 6×6 bull elk. I have waited a lifetime to bring home an animal as amazing as this. Please post this on your webpage to let others know how they can benefit from your experience with guided hunts. Dennis and I will return for another hunt and hope you and your staff have a super Holiday Season and Merry Christmas, and please say hi to my new friend and fellow junior firefighter, Eli Thanks again.

Just wanted to say thanks again for the great time and hospitality. I measure my hunts by the experiences I have and not the animals I take home. Using that measuring stick I had a fantastic hunt. The elk were tough but the mule deer Aston found for me was beautiful. Aston was a pleasure to hunt with and put a ton of work into finding me an elk. The entire staff and accommodations were without question the best I have experienced. I would LOVE to come back and visit you again.

I had to write you a note to say how grand a time our family had on our stay and hunt with you there at Upper Canyon Outfitters. Everyone, without exception, was wonderful, friendly, helpful, etc. Our cabins were great. All the hunters in our group are still talking about the great experience they had. Meals, massages, even the snow, were all so especially grand too. One of the girls said that we need to come back in five years for a reunion, but she suggested summer time to see the ranch a warmer season. Thank you, hugely, for a marvelous family hunting vacation.

Thank you for the friendship, generosity, and wonderful hospitality that you shared with me the past two weeks. My stay here was enjoyable and the hunting was challenging. Meeting and hunting with new friends was also rewarding. I will be looking forward to returning to this beautiful spot in Montana. There is no greater hunting challenge than the magnificent elk.

Your warm, welcoming, laid-back atmosphere made us comfortable from the get-go. Your friendly staff and guides are some of the best people around. We appreciated everything they did to make our visit memorable.

My week at the ranch was truly amazing. I wanted to thank you for the incredible experience. I immediately felt like family, as I believe all guests do. I will be telling all my friends, family and coworkers of your gem on the Upper Ruby. It was wonderful to meet your family, especially Eli, and all the other employees on the ranch as well. I hope to make Upper Canyon a yearly visit. Wishing you the best of health going forward into the hunting season. Thank you again for everything.

I am so glad we got to experience your 4th of July gathering. Seeing so many people that visit time and time again is only a testament to how wonderful you are in taking such great care of everyone. Seeing your grandchildren and knowing Tate’s Upper Canyon Outfitters will go on for generations to come – joyous! You are truly special people and that is why you have the guides and guests that feel like family. Until I can return again, I send you my love. It could not have been better.

Thanks for a great month of fellowship, fun, and great times. My mind truly was emptied of all my cares for days at a time, and I was able to really relax. Your untiring ability to be so many things to so many people simultaneously is amazing… and through it all you still manage to be a wonderful friend. Can’t wait to be with you all again, whenever that is.

Just a note to thank you all for a wonderful trail ride and visit with old friends enjoyed by our entire family. It was wonderful to ‘hit the trail’ again to see our Ruby Valley from the peaks across the road. Best of all was getting to see some of the friends were made over the past 12 years. We’ve missed your all since I’ve made Ennis our summer home. Thanks to all for the warm welcome back to UCO – we plan to be back to ride as often as possible.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at your ranch. Eric led us to good fishing and, Donna, we loved the ride… Your efforts to keep the country in us urban boys and girls is much appreciated.

I have never, ever, met such fantastic, good-hearted, hospitable, patient, kind, friendly people all under the same roof. I consider myself fortunate and my faith in human kind has been restored.

Thank you once again for allowing me to share your beautiful place and this amazing experience… I find myself reluctant to leave but with my spirit fed and renewed. I didn’t realized just how badly I need a Montana fix until I got here and felt, yet again, at home. Thank you for your hospitality and the laughs we shared. I cherish those the most.

Thank you for the fabulous week at UCO – the time went by so fast! We had a great group of gals and I am looking forward to visiting you again! Please extend my sincere thanks to everyone at UCO who made the trip so enjoyable. Everyone worked so hard, and with long hours for all of us. Coming back to the ranch every night was like coming home. Everything was just perfect!

Watching the video last night, I had a big smile on my face, but also tears in my eyes… we had an unforgettable experience at the ranch. Horses, dogs, cows and most of all, all of the great people made the week truly the best. I love Montana. I cannot thank you enough. I know we had a lot of fun with the calves on the last day but I hope they are not scarred for life after the tangles with the crazy women wanting to dress them up.

Thanks again, and hugs to all.

At Big Horn Outfitters, we offer fully guided archery and rifle elk hunts in Wyoming hunt areas 34, 35, 36 and 45.  All of these areas are in our Special Use Outfitting permit on the Big Horn National Forest and take place from wall tents..  We also offer guided private land elk hunts as well, which take place from our fully renovated lodge and cabins just outside of Buffalo. Whether you prefer a low-elevation, private land hunt or a mountain hunt in the beautiful Wyoming wilderness, Big Horn Outfitters has a hunt for you. Most of our elk hunts involve using a 4WD vehicle or ATV to access the area and then we begin hiking.

Wyoming Elk Hunting Preference Points

All of Wyoming’s elk tags are distributed based on a preference point system.  Due to the influx of hunter applications in the past several years, the point requirement will increase each year.  The amount of the increase varies depending on which area we’re looking at.  Our private land hunt in area 34 will require roughly 5 points for 2024, in the special (high price) draw.  Area 35 type 1 (rifle or late archery) will take a minimum of 7-8 points in the special draw.  The area 35 type 9 (archery only) should take a minimum of 8 points in the special draw.  Area 45 type 1 and type 9, should take 14 points to draw the tag.  These requirements are estimates based on the point creep over the past 3 years and are our best guess at the points required, there is no way to know for sure what the outcome will be.

Montana Archery Elk Hunting

We hunt big bulls in Southeastern Montana in the 700 units.  The archery tag required for this unit is a 799-21.  We do a very limited amount of these hunts each year, the quality of these hunts has been exceptional in past seasons.  Bulls between 300-340″ have been the average, and we see bigger bulls frequently.  Montana’s preference point system is different from Wyoming, but 3-5 Montana bonus points offers you a great chance at drawing this tag.  Please feel free to contact us if you have more questions about this hunt.

Physically Demanding Hunts

As a generalization, all elk hunts are physically demanding in some form or fashion, our elk hunts are no different.  The success rate and caliber of bulls harvested correlates directly to the physical condition and shooting ability of the hunter.  It is imperative that elk hunters, hunting with any weapon are prepared physically for these hunts, as a rule of thumb the guys that are prepared will have far more opportunities to harvest their animal and have opportunities at better bulls.

Wyoming Archery Elk Hunts

There are few things that rival the excitement of hunting elk during the month of September.  The bugle is a sound you’ll remember for the rest of your life. We are fortunate to have access to some of the best archery elk hunting in the state of Wyoming. Archery elk hunts begin around the second week of September and go through the end of the month. There isn’t a better archery hunt in North America than hunting rutting elk. We typically experience very high rates of opportunity, in the fall of 2023, 100% of our archery elk hunters had opportunities with an 80% success rate. At Big Horn Outfitters, we take pride in being hardcore bowhunters ourselves and we have the staff, skills and hunting ground to get the job done. Archery elk hunts are 6 day hunts and can be extended for an additional daily fee.

Wyoming Rifle Elk Hunts

We offer both bull elk and cow elk rifle hunts in multiple areas.  Both of these elk hunts have private land and public land opportunities. They have the birds! The owners were extremely quick to respond once I reached out to them via Book Your Hunt. Once I arrived, I met up with Bo (owner) and Tanner (guide) and they were extremely friendly and knowledgeable of the turkey patterns. I had two days to hunt and both days, multiple times we had mature birds close. Tanner went above and beyond to try and put me in the best spot possible to harvest a bird. He was super friendly and an expert at calling. Bo called multiple times each day to make sure things were going well, which I appreciated. I was lucky enough to harvest a bird on the last afternoon. The terrain was relatively easy to traverse which was nice. I will definitely be booking with them in the future. Thanks again for a great time! Read review on BookYourHunt.com .

The ‘shed hunt’ is on. Towering prongs of elk antlers are the prize.

The often intense event commences every May 1 on national forest land in Wyoming, drawing enthusiasts who search on foot, bike and horse.

family elk hunting trips

JACKSON, Wyo. — The first day of May dawned frosty, partly cloudy and, Brady Rivenes hoped, auspiciously for snagging a “really big stack” of elk antlers in the snow-flecked national forest 20 minutes from where he sat in a black pickup.

His truck was No. 23 of 367 vehicles registered to begin lining up the morning before at the Teton County Fairgrounds, the starting spot for what may be the hottest event of a booming pastime in the American West: the annual Jackson “shed hunt,” an intense and sometimes cutthroat search for the antlers that bull elk sprout every year, deploy in autumn battles for mates and then drop each spring.

Some shed hunters collect antlers. Others mount them on walls, fashion them into light fixtures or place them in gardens. A growing number sell them as dog chews — an industry that has surged so much over the past two decades that the price of antlers is now upward of $16 a pound. Whatever the use, the largest ones — towering bones that can span four feet and weigh 30 pounds — are typically the most coveted.

“Some people come here for the really big horns,” said Rivenes, 24, an environmental engineer who traveled with family and friends from Gillette, more than six hours away. “Personally, I’m looking to find a bunch.”

Rivenes carried bare-bones equipment: a camo-patterned backpack and binoculars. In pre-dawn darkness on Wednesday, other participants had telescopes, horses, fat-tire bikes and tracking dogs — all useful tools. Their vehicles would be led in a motorcade by law enforcement across the expansive National Elk Refuge, where shed hunting is not allowed, to Bridger-Teton National Forest, where the season opens at 6 a.m. each May 1.

In a sign of the burgeoning interest, all vehicles in this year’s procession sported Wyoming plates. The legislature in 2023 voted to restrict the first week of shed-hunt season in certain areas to residents only.

State Rep. Ryan Berger (R), a special education teacher who sponsored the change, said he hoped to give seniors and people with disabilities a head start as well as to quell frenzied scenes that have led to harassment of wildlife, fistfights and felony charges.

When Berger was a child in the ’70s and ’80s, families “used to just go out and take a bucket of chicken or a sandwich and walk around the hills to look for antlers,” he said. But profit seekers have made “a big mess of the season. It’s just been crazy.”

By crazy, he means: Flying drones over public lands to identify fallen antlers or bulls with big racks. Using snowmobiles or dogs to chase winter-weakened deer, elk and moose until their horns tumble. Collecting shed antlers out of season, when wildlife authorities — who sometimes plant decoy antlers to catch poachers — say fragile animals require tranquility to survive to spring.

In 2022, a Montana online dog-chew retailer pleaded guilty to federal felony and misdemeanor charges for illegally caching antlers on Bridger-Teton land before the calendar allowed; he was already on probation for the same offense in 2019, when authorities found more than 500 antlers that he hid on the refuge and in a horse trailer. Last month , an Idaho man was fined $6,100 and sentenced to three years’ probation for illegal collecting in the same areas. Authorities said he had 1,000 pounds of antlers worth $18,000.

Such fervor has prompted officials in the West, home to the nation’s largest elk herds, to limit shed hunting on public lands. Several states now have winter bans. Wyoming requires nonresident participants to buy a $21.50 conservation stamp. Utah requires everyone to take an online “antler gathering ethics course.”

The rules trouble Utah resident Weston McArthur, part of a thriving community of shed influencers. McArthur caught the bug 12 years ago, when he was making a living erecting cell towers and found his first sets of antlers. Six years later, he had built enough of a following and sponsor base — his online handle is “Rise and Shed” — that it became his full-time job.

“Every niche has its bad egg,” said McArthur, who says limiting access on federal lands to only some people seems wrong. “But I don’t like the shed closures for the fact that they hurt the honest person.”

Rivenes has mixed feelings. Wyoming’s new rule greatly improves his chances of finding that big stack every year. And, he said, he understood the need to crack down: The antler market has “ruined the sport.”

But with far fewer vehicles, the vibe at this year’s Jackson hunt was less social and kinetic. Rivenes had made out-of-state friends during the past five years, and he was bummed not to see them.

Still, hanging out at the fairgrounds on Tuesday, he had no doubt he would have a blast at what he described as something like an adult Easter egg hunt.

“It’s a rush here. It’s the competition — you’re trying to beat everyone to them and find more than everyone else,” he said. “Every one of us will leave here and can’t wait to come back next year.”

If Jackson had an official animal, it would probably be elk. More than a century ago, the herds here were thin, depleted by hunting and settlement. Federal and state officials responded with winter feedings, a practice that helped revive the population yet is now a controversial wildlife management tool . The federal refuge hosts a winter-long buffet for some 8,000 elk that tourists can admire from horse-drawn sleighs. Feedings on nearby state lands sustain thousands more.

The result is lots of elk — and, come springtime, lots of antlers that have tumbled to the forest floor.

Arches made of antlers flank Jackson’s town square, where at the annual Elkfest in May, piles of the twisted tines are auctioned in a fundraiser for the refuge and local Scouts. Last year, buyers purchased 9,700 pounds of antlers.

Antler prices have doubled over the past decade, said Samantha Maher, a University of California at Berkeley graduate student who recently surveyed shed hunters in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. She was surprised to find less than 4 percent of those polled — nearly all white, male, big-game hunters — were motivated by profit.

“There’s that narrative of out-of-staters coming to collect antlers for money and creating this gold rush atmosphere,” Maher said. “What I found was, most people keep them for trophies and give them to friends and make pet chews. Really, people just like being outside.”

As the vehicle procession arrived at a trailhead near Curtis Canyon around 6 a.m. Wednesday, Rivenes and his group darted into the hills. Riders on horseback galloped ahead.

Brian Prosser, an electrician with a red beard to his chest, headed uphill toward a campground. He quickly found a five-point horn and strapped it to his backpack.

Prosser had avoided the Jackson hunt for several years because, he said, “it was chaos.” Instead, he searched for sheds on the state feed grounds closer to his home south of Jackson, where he had found half a dozen antlers within the first hour last year. “Like Christmas morning.”

The residents-only rule drew him back, and he had a bet with a co-worker: Whoever found more horns owned the other one lunch.

“So I’m looking for quantity,” he said.

Wearing short sleeves despite below-freezing temps, Prosser walked briskly up and down grassy hills, twisted branches crunching underfoot. He kept a sly eye on three other hunters within 100 yards. Staying ahead of them increased his chances of a find.

In the dusting of snow, he spotted coyote and wolf tracks. Early growth poked through the frozen ground. He passed the leg of a dead elk and the wings of a raptor. He avoided deep snow, knowing elk also would have eschewed it. He spotted a narrow trail, its coating of snow undisturbed.

“This is perfect,” Prosser said, because elk love trails. “We’re all lazy. Doesn’t matter if you’re an elk or a marathon runner.”

More than two hours after the opening, hunters surveyed their treasures near a trailhead. Horses carried packs stuffed with antlers. One man toted the skull of a ram, horns intact.

Kayden Romrell, a 24-year-old welder in fringed chaps, stood over a “deadhead” — a skull with six-point antlers still attached, which he said he had broken off the spine of a dead elk as a bighorn sheep watched.

An hour later, Rivenes emerged from the trail, cheeks rosy from sprinting in the chill. There were far fewer hunters in the hills this year, he said, but also far fewer antlers — maybe, he surmised, because a low-snow winter had made elk less motivated to migrate toward the refuge.

Rivenes dumped his loot: Four antlers, including what appeared to be a set, and one 8-point. He had left two deadheads on the land, in part because those take time to separate from their carcasses, in part because they smell awful.

“It’s a pretty average pile. Nothing too special. But it was a good walk,” he said. “I’m ready for a nap.”

The Guardian has obtained a copy of Noem’s soon-to-be released book, where she writes about killing an unruly dog, and a smelly goat, too. South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem — a potential running mate for presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump — is getting attention again. This time, it’s for a new book where she writes about killing an unruly dog, and a smelly goat, too.

The Guardian obtained a copy of Noem’s soon-to-be released book, “No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward.” In it, she tells the story of the ill-fated Cricket, a 14-month-old wirehaired pointer she was training for pheasant hunting.

She writes, according to the Guardian, that the tale was included to show her willingness to do anything “difficult, messy and ugly” if it has to be done. But backlash was swift against the Republican governor, who just a month ago drew attention and criticism for posting an infomercial-like video about cosmetic dental surgery she received out-of-state.

In her book, Noem writes that she took Cricket on a hunting trip with older dogs in hopes of calming down the wild puppy. Instead, Cricket chased the pheasants while “having the time of her life.”

On the way home from the hunting trip, Noem writes that she stopped to talk to a family. Cricket got out of Noem’s truck and attacked and killed some of the family’s chickens, then bit the governor.

Noem apologized profusely, wrote the distraught family a check for the deceased chickens, and helped them dispose of the carcasses, she writes. Cricket “was the picture of joy” as all that unfolded.

“I hated that dog,” Noem writes, deeming her “untrainable.”

“At that moment,” Noem writes, “I realized I had to put her down.” She led Cricket to a gravel pit and killed her.

That wasn’t all. Noem writes that her family also owned a “nasty and mean” male goat that smelled bad and liked to chase her kids. She decided to go ahead and kill the goat, too. She writes that the goat survived the first shot, so she went back to the truck, got another shell, then shot him again, killing him.

Soon thereafter, a school bus dropped off Noem’s children. Her daughter asked, “Hey, where’s Cricket?” Noem writes.

The excerpts drew immediate criticism on social media platforms, where many posted photos of their own pets. President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign surfaced the story on social media alongside a photo of Noem with Trump.

The Lincoln Project, a conservative group that opposes Trump, posted a video that it called a “public service announcement,” showing badly behaved dogs and explaining that “shooting your dog in the face is not an option.”

“You down old dogs, hurt dogs, and sick dogs humanely, not by shooting them and tossing them in a gravel pit,” Rick Wilson of the Lincoln Project wrote on X. “Unsporting and deliberately cruel ... but she wrote this to prove the cruelty is the point.”

Noem took to social media to defend herself.

“We love animals, but tough decisions like this happen all the time on a farm,” she said on X. “Sadly, we just had to put down 3 horses a few weeks ago that had been in our family for 25 years.”

She urged readers to preorder her book if they want “more real, honest, and politically INcorrect stories that’ll have the media gasping.”

Republican strategist Alice Stewart said that while some Republican voters might appreciate the story “as a testament to her grit,” it ultimately creates a distraction for Noem.

“It’s never a good look when people think you’re mistreating animals,” Stewart said. “I have a dog I love like a child and I can’t imagine thinking about doing that, I can’t imagine doing that, and I can’t imagine writing about it in a book and telling all the world.”

It’s not the first time Noem has grabbed national attention.

In 2019, she stood behind the state’s anti-meth campaign even as it became the subject of some mockery for the tagline “Meth. We’re on it.” Noem said the campaign got people talking about the methamphetamine epidemic and helped lead some to treatment.

Last month, Noem posted a nearly five-minute video on X lavishing praise on a team of cosmetic dentists in Texas for giving her a smile she said she can be proud of. “I love my new family at Smile Texas!” she wrote.

South Dakota law bans gifts of over $100 from lobbyists to public officials and their immediate family. A violation is a misdemeanor punishable up to a year in jail and/or a $2,000 fine. The state attorney general’s office has declined to answer questions about whether the gift ban applies to people who are not registered lobbyists.

An Oklahoma tourist says he faces 12 years in prison in the Caribbean after he mistakenly left 4 bullets from a hunting trip in his carry-on duffel bag

  • Ryan Watson was on vacation when he was charged with illegally carrying ammo into Turks and Caicos.
  • He and his wife, Valerie, say the four bullets in their duffel bag were unknowingly left there from a hunting trip.
  • Watson now faces 12 years in prison, alongside several US tourists charged for similar offenses.

Insider Today

An Oklahoma man traveling with his wife in the Caribbean territory of Turks and Caicos faces 12 years in prison after four rounds of ammunition were found in his luggage.

Ryan and Valerie Watson arrived in Turks and Caicos earlier this month to celebrate his 40th birthday with several other couples, their families said in a GoFundMe. NBC Boston reported that the Watsons arrived on April 7.

But the pair, who have two young children, were arrested in the self-governed British territory after airport security found the four bullets in their carry-on duffel bag.

Their families' GoFundMe said the ammo had been left in the bag unintentionally, and was from a prior deer hunting trip.

"They were hunting ammunition rounds that I use for white-tailed deer, and I recognized them, and I thought: 'Oh, what a mistake.' I had no idea that they were in there," Ryan Watson told NBC News.

Valerie Watson was released from the charges on Tuesday and flew back to Oklahoma to reunite with her children.

But her husband remains in Turks and Caicos, and was granted $15,000 bail the day after by the local supreme court, according to a police statement.

He now faces 12 years in prison, which is the minimum custodial sentence for bringing firearms or ammunition into Turks and Caicos.

Ryan Watson must stay on the islands and report twice a week to a local police station while waiting for his hearing, which is set for June 7.

Meanwhile, his family is trying to raise $300,000 for his legal fees and housing in the Caribbean.

"Isolated from their family, friends, and children, they face mounting legal fees, living expenses, and the overwhelming stress of their situation," their GoFundMe reads. "The emotional and financial toll is immense, and they are at risk of losing everything."

Related stories

"We were trying to pack board shorts and flip flops," Valerie Watson told CBS News . "Packing ammunition was not at all our intent."

The Watsons did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider through their GoFundMe.

Eight US tourists prosecuted since February

It is illegal to bring firearms or ammunition into Turks and Caicos, and penalties apply regardless of the offender's status or country of origin, according to the local attorney general's chambers.

Several tourists caught under this law were previously let off with just a fine, while at least one was given a prison sentence under the minimum limit.

But in February, a court of appeal ordered that all offenders be given at least the minimum sentence of 12 years in prison.

At least eight tourists from the US have since been prosecuted under this rule, per the attorney general's chambers.

Another American tourist, 31-year-old Tyler Wenrich , was charged on Tuesday with possessing ammunition after he arrived in Turks and Caicos on a cruise ship, according to local police.

"While going through a security checkpoint, it was discovered Mr Wenrich allegedly had ammunition in his possession," a police statement said.

Amid the recent spate of tourist arrests, the US State Department published a September advisory warning US citizens that it wouldn't be able to secure their release if they brought firearms and ammo into Turks and Caicos.

"We strongly encourage you to carefully check your luggage for stray ammunition or forgotten weapons before departing for TCI," the advisory said.

The US State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours by Business Insider.

Tourism is a key revenue for Turks and Caicos, and in 2019 provided about $787 million, or 65% of the island's GDP, to the territory, per a 2023 report by the Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce.

The Caribbean archipelago is a popular port of call for US cruise ships, and this year has seen a 127% jump in tourist arrivals — the largest increase in the world — compared to 2019, the United Nations World Tourism Organization said in February.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem stands by decision to kill dog, share it in new book

Updated on: April 30, 2024 / 9:28 AM EDT / CBS/AP

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem – who has been considered to be a potential running mate for presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump – addressed on Sunday the recent attention on her new book where she writes about killing an unruly dog and a goat.

The Guardian obtained a copy of Noem's soon-to-be-released book, "No Going Back: The Truth on What's Wrong with Politics and How We Move American Forward." Noem is scheduled to be interviewed on "Face the Nation" next week about her upcoming book, set to be released on May 7.

In it, she tells the story of the ill-fated Cricket, a 14-month-old wirehaired pointer she was training for pheasant hunting.

Kristi Noem Book Dog Killing

She writes, according to the Guardian, that the tale was included to show her willingness to do anything "difficult, messing and ugly" if it has to be done. The backlash was swift against the Republican governor and on Sunday, she addressed the issue on social media.

"I can understand why some people are upset about a 20 year old story of Cricket, one of the working dogs at our ranch, in my upcoming book — No Going Back," she wrote in a post on X , the platform formally known as Twitter. "The book is filled with many honest stories of my life, good and bad days, challenges, painful decisions, and lessons learned."

In her book, Noem writes that she took Cricket on a hunting trip with older dogs in hopes of calming down the wild puppy. Instead, Cricket chased the pheasants while "having the time of her life."

On the way home from the hunting trip, Noem writes that she stopped to talk to a family. Cricket got out of Noem's truck and attacked and killed some of the family's chickens, then bit the governor.

On Sunday, she defended her decision to kill the dog, saying that "South Dakota law states that dogs who attack and kill livestock can be put down."

"Given that Cricket had shown aggressive behavior toward people by biting them, I decided what I did," Noem wrote. "Whether running the ranch or in politics, I have never passed on my responsibilities to anyone else to handle. Even if it's hard and painful. I followed the law and was being a responsible parent, dog owner, and neighbor."

In the book, Noem also writes that her family also owned a "nasty and mean" male goat that smelled bad and liked to chase her kids. She decided to go ahead and kill the goat, too. She writes that the goat survived the first shot, so she went back to the truck, got another shell, then shot him again, killing him.

The excerpts drew immediate criticism on social media platforms, where many posted photos of their own pets. President Joe Biden's reelection campaign surfaced the story on social media alongside a photo of Noem with Trump.

It's not the first time Noem has grabbed national attention.

A month ago when she posted an  infomercial-like video about cosmetic dental surgery  she received out-of-state.

In a nearly five-minute video on X, she praised a team of cosmetic dentists in Texas for giving her a smile she said she can be proud of. "I love my new family at Smile Texas!" she wrote.

In 2019, she stood behind the state's anti-meth campaign even as it became the  subject of some mockery  for the tagline "Meth. We're on it." Noem said the campaign got people talking about the methamphetamine epidemic and helped lead some to treatment.

Kristi Noem killed her pet dog, "Cricket," after the animal misbehaved on a hunting trip, she says

In her tell-all book, noem proves she can get the “job” done, no matter the animal, by nandika chatterjee.

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, a Republican seen as a potential running mate for Donald Trump, tells a story in her new book about shooting and killing her young dog and a goat, The Guardian reported .

In the book, Noem explains in excruciating detail how she gunned down a 14-month-old wirehair pointer named "Cricket." What crimes earned this dog the death penalty? Noem reported that the puppy was disobedient and out “having the time of her life” during a pheasant hunting trip and that the animal later attacked and killed a neighbor's chickens.

The ill-fated Cricket proved not to be a bad hunter, after all, but was guilty of killing the wrong kind of bird. According to Noem, since a shock collar didn't instill the desired discipline, the only reasonable thing to do was to kill the excitable and “untrainable” pup.

Noem, who became governor in 2019, likened murdering her canine to having the ability and willingness in politics to do anything “difficult, messy, and ugly.” It’s not the only animal she chose to sacrifice that day, she wrote: "I realized another unpleasant job needed to be done.”

The “job” in question was killing a “nasty and mean” male family goat. What outrageous crimes did the goat, whom she described as “disgusting, musky, rancid,” commit other than needing a bath? The uncastrated, unnamed farm animal, “loved to chase” Noem’s children, knocking them down and ruining their clothes.

After killing the goat, who proved to put up a bit more of a fight than the defenseless dog, Noem wrote that the school bus arrived to drop off her kids. Her daughter Kennedy looked confused, according to Noem, asking: “Hey, where’s Cricket?”

“I guess if I were a better politician I wouldn’t tell the story here,” Noem wrote.
