Amalfi Coast: Pompeii & Pizza Family Holiday

I wouldn’t change a thing. This was our first overseas trip with kids (8 &11) so we were a little trepidatious. Exodus travel had everything planed out perfectly. It was the right blend of incredible activity and free time. Our guide Savy always had an amazing 6th sense for just when the kids needed an ice cream recharge. 2 Tori in Agerola was a great place to stay and beautiful. It’s just above all the craziness of the coast but still very convenient. Not having to drive in Naples and the Amalfi coast yourself is probably worth the cost lol.

Italy Family Holiday

I took my 12 year old son on the Intrepid Family Adventure. We had an amazing time. The guide was helpful, considerate and lots of fun. Playing games with the kids in the pool and making sure everyone was comfortable and happy. The pace was fantastic for a family with the mornings full of exploring with the group and the afternoons reserved for free time for families to spend together. Our highlight was the sailing trip to Capri. Can't recommend highly enough

Italian Holiday (7 Days)

My husband and I are usually "do it yourself" travelers, but am I SO glad we went with Trafalgar on this "Italian Holiday" trip, and I'll tell you details of why I think this is a GREAT way to see Italy! First off, there are venues like the Vatican that an individual simply can't get into without waiting for hours in a long line, but Trafalgar guides shepherd you past endless lines, and get you in early. The day we saw the Vatican, people had gotten into lines hours early, but the Pope was set to visit at 10 am, so those poor folks were going to be very disappointed to learn they weren't going to get in after all. We were escorted in early, because Trafalgar arranges everything for you. Then a local guide who was extremely knowledgable gave us a fascinating tour, which made everything we were seeing that much more meaningful and interesting. You wear little headsets that are NOT a prerecorded thing, but enable you to hear her live tour. You can ask questions, which is so nice. I'm not even Catholic, but was utterly mesmerized and blown away by the Vatican. I'm sure you CAN do it on your own, but you'll wait forever, and not learn half as much. It's not like I'm going to Italy every week, so why not do it right and get a real tour? ( I'm so enthused, I should let everyone know I'm not a Trafalgar employee, and don't get any perks from sharing my enthusiasm!) . That was true of a lot of other places too; the local guides were all wonderful. Depending on your sophistication, you may or may not love the hotels. None took my breath away, but they were clean and in good areas, and some were quite attractive. Our main tour guide was Martin, and he assured us and reminded us that if we had any problems, please tell him so he could fix it. Well, at our first hotel, we were put into a room with one bed, but we'd requested 2 since hubby's a snorer and I'm a thrasher, so we did call Martin, and he did straighten it out very soon. This is something to say in Italy, because their hotels aren't usually up to US standards, frankly, and if you have a problem with your hotel and you are only staying somewhere one or 2 nights, how responsive do you think a hotel clerk will be? But if you are part of a tour group which brings that hotel lots of business, they are much more motivated to take care of you. This is another advantage to taking this tour, if you have limited time to see Italy, and want to see as much as possible in just over a week. We are penny pinchers, and this was expensive for us, but after going on it, neither of us begrudges the money, and my independent husband admits we could never have had all the wonderful experiences on our own. The breakfasts were very good, except Italians seem to like runny scrambled eggs, but there is LOADS to choose from, and I NEED a big breakfast! (I admit, I always stashed a bit of food in my purse for later too, but I was discreet!) Another thing we could not have done on our own was one of our favorite experiences: they took us to dinner at the most beautiful old villa in Tuscany! The owner was the soul of graciousness, and it was a spectacularly beautiful site; the grounds were like something gorgeous from a movie. There were lemon trees, roses, lavender, statues, paths, huge planters with blooming hydrangeas, and it all overlooked a valley of olive trees and grape vineyards. We spent the most relaxing evening, and were allowed to take all the pictures we wanted, and the dinner was delicious. You really got to appreciate Tuscany. A few of our dinners included as much wine as you wanted, and they don't add sulfites in Italy, so I became very European for a week! Another thing to be aware of is hidden costs in any tour company; they can really add up. Trafalgar did include quite a few meals, and quite a few amazing sites, so that makes a difference, and it ended up less expensive overall than others which had lots of "" that our tour included.. My husband and I paid for 2 optional tours: the Parthenon, and seeing "David" at the Academia. Again, we are ridiculously cheap, so we used a Rick Steve's book for our free time in other places. I think it's a good idea to buy his latest book and bring it with you, AND download some tours, because you can use it to do your own sightseeing, IF you are on a budget. We did the Rick Steve's tour in Verona, and we kept bumping into the folks on the optional tour, so I can't say that was an extra I minded missing! The biggest risk we took was in Florence. We could easily have seen a very famous cathedral where an amazing array of famous people are buried, but we really wanted to see the Uffizi Museum. Martin advised us to see the cathedral, because we might very well not get in to the Uffizi by the time we'd need to leave. We thanked him, then promptly RACED to wait in line at the Uffizi for more than an hour. You can arrange to get tickets days in advance, but we hadn't. (I guess to do that, we'd have had to know what time we'd be there..) We were super lucky to have about 45 minutes left to run around seeing our favorite statues and paintings that we'd researched on the Rick Steve's app while in line, including Botticelli's Venus Rising! It was one of the best days of my life; we were just so incredibly lucky. We waited in the general line, because the fast pass ticket do not tell you before you purchase them what time you'll get in; what good is that?!! I can't really recommend you do this though, because we might very well have not gotten in in time... Anyway, the glass blowing exhibit in Venice and the leather making exhibit in Florence were both very interesting, and were another thing available to you only as a Trafalgar guest. We didn't buy any glass or leather because we're cheapskates, but some of the ladies in our group bought stunning earrings at the glass factory, and they weren't expensive at all for such stunning, unique mementos...I wished I had! I wasn't thrilled with seeing the Leaning Tower of Pisa for so long; I'd have been happy with 15 minutes of corny photography and then hit the road. But hubby and I went off site to an Indian restaurant near the back entrance, and had a great lunch cheap. (BTW, this review is completely helter skelter in terms of itinerary; I'm hopping all around out of sequence, sorry.) I'd been afraid Venice would be smelly and dirty, but despite a bad heat wave, it wasn't smelly or dirty. In fact, it was beautiful, absolutely amazing!! There's no other place like Venice - you MUST see it - and the cathedral and buildings and churches are incredible. We're musicians, so we had to go see the church where Antonio Vivaldi worked, Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pieta, and St. Mark's where all Gabrielli's antiphonal brass pieces were performed. Photos aren't allowed in St. Mark's, and a lady in front of us was actually caught and escorted out for taking a pic, but hubby snuck one anyway because he's a music nerd. Never mind that it's the tomb of ST. MARK WHO WROTE THE GOSPEL - hubby had to photograph the balconies where trumpet players of old performed! We didn't go on the optional tour of St. Mark's. I'm sure it was interesting, but the long line for the public moved surprisingly fast, and we wanted more free time in Venice to explore back streets, old bookstores, etc. I think people in our group basically found all the optional tours worthwhile except perhaps the one in Verona, but we had our own ideas, so we picked and chose, nothing wrong with that. We didn't pay for the gondola tour, but everyone else was unanimous in raving about it, and it was a lot of folks' favorite thing! We also went on the Trevi Fountain tour, and I think we could have done that one on our own, but they did also show us little neighborhoods of charming narrow streets, and Martin treated us all to the best gelato of my life: I chose "blood orange", and am salivating just writing that... My husband was afraid this would be an "old farts tour" - meaning very slow paced, but I teased him about this as we hurried to keep up! This tour involved a lot of walking and a pretty rigid wakeup schedule, so if you have mobility issues, it's not the tour for you. It's PERFECT if you want to see a big range of Italy in only 8 days though, so we really appreciated the pace. If you go when it may be hot, take an umbrella for shade. Yes, I know it sounds silly, but even my semi-macho husband was using one to ward off the scorching sun when we got a 95 degree heatwave. It makes a huge difference. I wore a hat the entire vacation, so if you're fair, pack one. Fortunately for us, everyone on our tour was just great, and we really enjoyed getting to know lots of fun, interesting people from all over, and of various ages. I can't imagine every batch of tourists are so great, but our group was a total pleasure. We never saw the Lake Cuomo area, but that's something we could do on our own someday. For getting a wonderful experience of Italy- seeing Rome,Florence, Tuscany, Venice, Pisa, etc. - you really get a fabulous tour with this group. Lastly, Martin talked an awful lot, (bring earplugs for the bus if you want to sleep!) but he was a great guy and very professional and knowledgable. Our driver Vincenzo was incredibly competent navigating tight squeezes and traffic, and everything was planned like clockwork for our convenience. I gave this 5 stars, and hope you love it if you go!! <3

Best of Italy (Classic, Summer, 11 Days) Tour

Best of Italy (Classic, Summer, 11 Days)

My wife and I took the Best of Italy tour in September, 2017. The tour director (Debra) and bus driver (Alessio) were excellent. The itinerary was also excellent. We visited all of the sights in Rome, Florence, Tuscany, Venice, Pisa, Assissi, Pompei, Sorrento, Positano, and Capri. The hotels were average at best. All of the breakfast buffets were disappointing. We had terrific lunches at rest stops while driving from city to another. The food at these rest stops is surprisingly good. My biggest complaint is the included group dinners which were either at the hotel or in a restaurant. These dinners did not offer any choice of meals. They just served everyone the same thing where the food was tasteless and sometimes inedible. My whole life I heard how amazing the food in Italy is supposed to be. Because this happened on several dinners, I cannot give Insight a overall good review. On the days where were able to eat out on our own for either lunch or dinner, we did enjoy the food at restaurants that we found by recommendations.

Best of Italy (Summer, 13 Days) Tour

Best of Italy (Summer, 13 Days)

First of all Trafalgar should have known that on Wednesdays the Pope is in audience so disappointed the people on our tour that we did not get to see the Basilica. The tour guide told us that they only learned that that morning which is not true. It has always been Wednesdays for years now. Very disappointing. So the people who go on the tour starting on another day get to see the Basilica and we are paying the same money. One of the main reason people go to Rome. VERY DISAPPOINTING. When people complained the guide told us that we could go and line up in the afternoon and hope to get in after a couple hours when he knew that meant we would miss the afternoon tour. The day could have been arranged differently so that the Rome tour ended at the Basilica and not started there. Secondly the Lake Como optional cruise was very disappointing as we did not get to see all the famous villas e.g. George Clooney, Richard Branson etc. as our tour guide pointed to an area and told us that it was around the corner in the distance. It would have taken 5 minutes to take us there. The optional cruise around Capri Island was another disappointment as you saw nothing more than what you see coming in on the Ferry. These optional tours are extremely expensive for what you get from them. The meals were very repetitive, pasta, pasta, and more pasta. Some of the hotels were very second rate. I had to ask to change rooms twice. A/C not working at night in the summer, showers with doors that did not fit and bathroom flooded after taking a shower. Enjoyed the itinerary although very rushed and having to get up at 6.00 am everyday but very disappointed in the three expensive optional tours above that we did not get what we paid for. Great bus driver and tour guide. Would I recommend this trip, maybe with a higher rated tour company.

The Italian Dream Tour

The Italian Dream

I enjoyed the cities we visited and the information and background history was well presented. The hotel were nice and our transportation to those cities was great. My concern, being a solo traveler, was there were a couple of times I travel alone through cities. One in particular was in Florence. I chose not to go on the excursion to Pisa since I had been to the city before. Our guide gave me a map and instructions on how to return to the hotel from our location. I asked if there were others not going to Pisa and I didn't receive a definitive answer. It was the next day that I found out that four other traveler did not go. I followed the map & instructions given me and I did reached the hotel, but I felt very uncomfortable traveling alone through that city. The second time was the last day in Rome, many of the travelers felt uncomfortable on securing transportation or finding their way from the Vatican to the Coliseum and returning to their hotel. That day I traveled with a group but we still felt uncomfortable getting through the city to our destinations especially at the end of the tour when we would return to our hotel. A couple of us were in different hotels and that had us traveling alone through the city. For the future, please give my concerns some thought especially since you promote safe travel for those traveling solo.

Everything about this tour was outstanding! I have no comment only praise!
The first hotel in Rome Romanico Palace Hotel was a dump, dirty and dingy. When arriving in Rome after a long plane ride, I would have expected a nicer hotel for the money we paid. Also, we paid a premium for a small group (20 people) but ended up with the larger group (60 people) on several occasions such as breakfast in two hotels that was chaos BTW and some tours. When we pay extra to be in a smaller group, I expect that this would be honoured by Insight. We were disappointed and didn’t get what we paid for.

“The entire experience was EXACTLY what we hoped for and so much more”

This was the most amazing trip of our entire lives. Nothing compares to it. The care and detail and attention given to us the entire way through our France and England travel was amazing. Everything from the travel guides, accommodation hosts and even the drivers selected for us. Our trip planner at the travel company understood exactly our desires and wishes for our family vacation. We wanted to immerse our young children in our first time abroad into the cultures of the countries and villages we stayed. She carefully selected our hosts and guides. She worked with them so that they understood what we were looking for and each one delivered beyond all expectations. We were treated likes friends and family. We saw people and parts of the world we never wanted to leave. It felt like we made true friends and companions that we still discuss and talk about like we’ve known them forever even 6 months after our travel. I strongly recommend Italy4Real and Travel4Real for anyone that wants to experience a tailored made vacation they can never forget. If you value the time and money you’ll spend on your travels, then choose this travel agency as an investment because you will return with memories that may very well be one of the best highlights of your life.

“On a scale of 1-10, Italy4Real is a 20!”

Rem Malloy from Italy4Real planned this sister’s trip (4 of us) and it was incredible. Not only was the accommodations, food, and sights superb, the fact that Rem was so connected to his vendors and clients made it go flawlessly. Even at the end when our flights were cancelled due to a transportation strike, he was right there with his representative to help sort things out quickly. It was my sister’s first time to Italy and they all gave the trip a 10 plus ( with one of them giving it a score of 20!) We would highly recommend Italy4Real …in fact I did for a friend and they also had an amazing time and are re booking with Rem for next year. Ciao!

Best Spot for Babies

Families with babies tend to gravitate towards South Sardinia because of the baby-friendly beaches. The waters here are quite calm and the beaches are sandy instead of rocky, making a nice, safe place for babies to enjoy the coastline. The hotels in this area are used to accommodating babies as well, so you will be sure to find a  coastal Italy vacation that works for your family.

Tips for Traveling to Italy with Children

  • Many shops and restaurants in Italy are closed from 1 pm until 4 pm. Make sure that you pack some snacks or get the kids fed before the restaurants and cafes shut down.
  • Bring nice clothes for the kids . Italian families take pride in their clothing and the way they look. Make sure to bring some nice outfits along with the more casual ones.
  • Learn a few key phrases in Italian so that you avoid misunderstandings. If your children have any allergies or special needs, make sure to figure out how to convey that in the local language.
  • Pack any essentials like baby food, diapers, and formula. While you can get these things in Italy, they may be more expensive and you might not find the kind that you usually use.
  • Plan as much as possible. Make sure to work out the accommodation, transportation, and the itinerary of activities before you leave for Italy. Traveling can be hectic and it will be better for the kids if you keep your trip running smoothly.
  • Write down the name and address of your hotel as well as your phone number and put it in the pocket or backpack of each of your children. If you somehow get separated, your kids can give the information to someone so that they can find you.

World Travel. Family Discovery.

Tauck Bridges' family trip to Italy serves up a multi-course feast of history, art, scenery and culinary treats…it's an unforgettable journey from Rome to the Amalfi Coast to savor together.

When in Rome… go to gladiator school! Our family-friendly tour of Italy brings Roman history into focus as you visit ancient ruins, learn gladiator skills and wander underground catacombs. You'll also tour the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel after hours. Pompeii reveals its mysteries as you walk its ancient streets and excavated buildings. And how sweet it is to see Sorrento, where you'll take a pizza-making class on a family farm… hop aboard a high-speed ferry to the enchanting Isle of Capri for further exploration via convertible and funicular… and break for gelato !

Convertible Car Ride, Capri

Tauck exclusive – after hours at the vatican museums with your family, exploring the vatican museums with your family – and no crowds.

Founded by Pope Julius II in the early 1500s, the Vatican Museums display classical and religious works of art collected by the popes throughout the centuries. Combined with the Sistine Chapel, they're visited by around six million people a year, ranking among the most-visited art museums in the world. On your Tauck Bridges Exclusive, after-hours, guided visit, you and your family can explore the Candelabra Gallery, the Map Gallery, the Tapestries, and the Sistine Chapel… all without the usual crowds. So you'll be able to take your time to contemplate the inspirational treasures before you – including the spectacular biblical frescoes on the ceiling, which took Michelangelo four years to paint, standing on a scaffold... and changed the course of western art.

Ancient Pompeii... frozen in time

Back to 1st-century pompeii.

Pompeii was a prosperous Roman city with a population of approximately 27,000 souls until August 24, 79 AD – the fateful date when Mount Vesuvius erupted and completely buried it and its inhabitants under a blanket of volcanic ash. And there it sat until its discovery by an architect more than 1,500 years later. It would be another 150 years before some of the world's earliest archaeologists began excavating the site in the 1740s, slowly revealing a city frozen in time. Today, as you walk with a local guide among the remains of Pompeii's buildings and streets – still an active archaeological site – you'll get a firsthand glimpse of what life might have been like in the Roman Empire during the 1st century AD.

Parco dei Principi Grand Hotel & Spa

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally, you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Italy; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, you should contact a consulate or embassy of Italy to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN:  If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $449  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

60 days or more before departure = $600 per person

59-8 days before departure = $900 per person

7-1 days before departure = $1500 per person

Time of cancellation will be when notice is received in our Wilton Woods, CT office.

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Note:  All Guests, regardless of residency, who book a Tauck journey have the option of purchasing the Cancellation Waiver provided by Tauck in the event they need to cancel their trip after making their reservations. Tauck's Guest Protection, which includes both the Cancellation Fee Waiver and the Travel Insurance Benefits and Assistance Services described above, is not available to residents of Puerto Rico.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

Please advise your Tauck Director on tour if you or the children traveling with you have any serious allergies. Also, adults may want to bring along children's aspirin or medicines as a precaution, as access to these may be limited.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

If you are a resident of the U.S. traveling internationally, no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information, contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country traveling internationally, please check with an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion. Italy is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical limitations. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and some steep and winding staircases.

In addition, coach travel along the many "Yellow Roads" on this tour are very windy and may cause you some discomfort if you are prone to motion sickness. If you are, we advise bringing motion sickness remedies or medication with you.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

"Using you really allowed us to enjoy the trip. According to my husband, you removed every possible area where there could have been friction. I really think that made it so much easier for us (mostly me) and gave us time to focus on the stuff that we wanted to focus on (like finding the best Gelato). The app was amazing at keeping all the info together. You recommended things I never would have thought to do on my own."

"Linda and her team planned the most wonderful trip for our extended family of 15, aged 2-72! She chose dinner and lunch places for every day that exceeded all expectations and would never have been found by us. The tours we took were perfect for the large age span and the guides were wonderful in each one. The trip was considered a success by every single person in the group! Even our two-year-old had so much fun! From cooking lessons in our villa to truffle hunting with dogs, winery tours and Florence city treasure hunts and just days by the pool, we were entertained the whole time. We even had her plan an extension on the trip for just my husband and I for our anniversary and she picked the most romantic place to stay and special dinner in our lives. And best of all, the stress was eliminated by Linda and Ciao Bambino, so this was the first Europe trip we came home from without needing a vacation after our vacation!"

–Symsack Family Italy Trip

"Overall, the trip was fabulous, and we really appreciate how much your planning improved our time over there. We would absolutely recommend your services to anyone in the market! … Hopefully you can tell that we had a blast on our trip. We’ve been raving about it since we got back. She took the time to ask lots of questions and knew what was important to us and the trip aligned with that perfectly! She was able to talk me through traveling with a young child and a teenager and planned things that they could both enjoy on the trip, which isn’t easy. It was worth every penny for the peace of mind that I had and knowing that everything I needed was in the itinerary app was key. I had no worries about having to schedule or coordinate anything. We spent two weeks together making memories that will last a lifetime!"

"My trip was extraordinary. Linda was incredible to work with and I could not have been more pleased. Thankful!"

–Goodrich Family Trip

"I can't begin to express the gratitude we feel towards Linda and the amazing work she does at Ciao Bambino. My wife and I were fortunate to make her acquaintance as we were planning a 14-day trip to Italy. It was our first trip to the country, and I was uneasy about some of the logistics. About five minutes into our initial call with Linda her vast experience began to shine through. Whenever a question or concern came up during the planning process, or while we were on our trip, she would simply say, "Leave it with me", and came up with a brilliant suggestion. She truly provides an excellent service. Investing with Linda was the best decision we made, and we are excited to work with her again!"

Budgeting Your Trip

With some research and careful consideration, you can create a trip that fits your budget, travel style, and interests.

Italy can be an expensive destination.

But there are ways to save money without sacrificing the quality of your trip.

Consider the following:

  • Travel during the shoulder season (spring or fall) instead of the peak season (summer) to save money on flights and accommodations.
  • Look for budget-friendly accommodations, such as hostels or Airbnb rentals.
  • Take advantage of free activities, such as visiting public parks and museums.
  • Use public transportation instead of taxis or private transfers.

To help you budget for your trip, use a table like the one below to compare costs for different destinations and activities.

Choosing Your Destinations

Italy has so many destinations to choose from.

So it’s important to narrow down your options based on your interests and travel style.

Here are some things to consider:

  • How much time do you have? If you only have one week, consider sticking to one or two destinations. If you have ten days or more, you can add more destinations to your itinerary.
  • What are your interests? Are you interested in art and history? Food and wine? Outdoor activities? Beaches ? Italy has something for everyone, so choose destinations that align with your interests.
  • What is your travel style? Do you prefer big cities or small towns? Do you like to stay busy or take things slow? Do you like to stay in one place or move around frequently?

Below are some popular destinations to consider:

  • Rome: Home to iconic landmarks like the Colosseum and the Vatican and some of the best food and wine in Italy.
  • Florence: A city known for its art and architecture, including the famous Duomo and the Uffizi Gallery.
  • Venice: A unique city built on water, with romantic canals and stunning architecture.
  • Tuscany: A region known for its rolling hills, vineyards, and charming towns like Siena and San Gimignano.
  • Cinque Terre: A series of five colorful towns along the Italian Riviera, known for their hiking trails and stunning views.

Determining Your Travel Time

When planning your Italy itinerary, it’s important to consider travel time between destinations.

Italy has an excellent train system that makes it easy to get around, but some destinations are further apart than others.

  • How much time do you want to spend traveling? If you want to minimize travel time, choose destinations that are closer together.
  • Are there any events or festivals you want to attend? For example, August is a popular time to visit Italy because of the Ferragosto holiday, but it can also be crowded and expensive.
  • What is the best time to visit Italy? Spring and fall are generally considered the best times to visit Italy because of the mild weather and fewer crowds.

Don’t forget to leave some flexibility in your schedule for unexpected discoveries and experiences.

One of Italy’s most famous cultural landmarks is the Colosseum in Rome.

This ancient amphitheater was once the site of gladiator battles and other public spectacles, and today it stands as a testament to the power and grandeur of the Roman Empire.

Another must-see attraction in Rome is the Pantheon, a stunning temple that dates back to the 2nd century AD.

Its impressive dome and intricate interior design make it a true masterpiece of ancient architecture.

Italian Cuisine

Regional specialties.

Each region of Italy has a unique cuisine, and it’s worth exploring as many as you can during your visit.

In the north, you’ll find rich, hearty dishes like risotto and polenta.

In the central regions, pasta is king, with specialties like carbonara and cacio e pepe.

.In the south, seafood takes center stage, with dishes like spaghetti alle vongole and fritto misto.

Italy is home to some of the world’s best wines.

As such, wine tasting is a must-do activity during your visit.

From the crisp whites of the north to the full-bodied reds of the south, there’s a wine for every palate.

Many wineries offer tours and tastings, and some even have restaurants on-site where you can enjoy a meal paired with their wines.

If you’re not sure where to start, ask your hotel or a local tour operator for recommendations.

Gelato Sampling

Gelato Sampling

No trip to Italy is complete without sampling some gelato.

This creamy, flavorful treat is a national obsession.

So, don’t be surprised to find gelaterias on every corner.

Look for gelaterias that make their gelato on-site using fresh, natural ingredients.

Some of the best gelaterias in Italy are small, family-run shops that have been around for generations.

During my visit to Italy, I made it a point to try gelato in every city I visited.

My favorite was a small shop in Rome that made their gelato with fresh fruit and cream.

It was so good I went back for seconds.

Accommodation Options

Choosing hotels.

Hotels are a great choice if you’re looking for comfort and convenience in your Italy stay.

The best hotels in Italy range from luxurious five-star resorts to budget-friendly options.

If you’re looking for the best hotels in Italy, consider staying in Rome, Florence, or Venice.

These cities have some of the most iconic hotels in the country.

Consider factors like location, amenities, and price when choosing a hotel.

Want to be close to the city center or in a quieter neighborhood?

Or do you need a pool or a gym?

Perhaps you are willing to pay extra for a spa or a restaurant?

Make a list of your must-haves and use it to narrow down your options.

Renting Villas

If you’re traveling with a group or looking for a more private and authentic experience, renting a villa might be a good option.

Villas are typically located in the countryside or smaller towns and offer more space and privacy than hotels.

They’re also a great choice if you’re planning to stay in one place for an extended period.

Staying in Hostels

On a tight budget or looking to meet other travelers?

Staying in a hostel might be a good option.

Hostels offer shared or private rooms and usually have a common area where guests can socialize.

They’re also a great choice when traveling solo and looking for a more social experience.

When choosing a hostel, consider factors like location, price, and atmosphere.

Do you want to be close to the city center or in a more residential area?

A party hostel or a more laid-back one?

Make sure to read reviews and check the amenities before booking.

Getting Around Italy

Public transportation.

Italy’s public transportation system is extensive and reliable, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious travelers.

Buses and trains are the most common forms of public transportation.

They can take you to most destinations throughout the country.

If you’re planning to use public transportation frequently, consider purchasing a regional or national pass .

These passes can save you money and make it easier to travel around Italy.

Renting a Car

Renting a car in Italy gives you the freedom to explore the country at your own pace.

But it’s important to keep in mind that driving in Italy can be challenging.

This is especially the case in larger cities like Rome and Florence.

If you do decide to rent a car, make sure to familiarize yourself with Italy’s traffic laws and be prepared for narrow roads and aggressive drivers.

Train Travel

Train travel is one of the most popular ways to get around Italy for a good reason.

Italy’s train system is efficient, affordable, and covers most of the country.

If you plan to travel by train, consider purchasing a Eurail pass .

This pass allows you to travel on most trains in Italy and other European countries for a set period.

Taking a tour is a great way to see the sights in Italy without worrying about transportation.

Many different types of tours are available, from walking tours to food tours to wine tours.

Traveling with your family?

Look for tours specifically designed for families with children.

These tours often include activities that are fun and engaging for kids.

A visit to Murano is an artistic immersion. This little island is known for its production of colorful decorative glass objects. Visitors may watch the skilled craftsmen demonstrate the glass blowing technique at one of the factories that specialize in this art form.

Don’t miss a stop at the Museo Galileo; the museum is loaded with celestial objects, including Galileo’s telescope. Act like a local and ride the old-world carousel at Piazza della Repubblica and picnic at the Boboli Gardens.

Recommended Hotel: Hotel Pendini

Lake Como  has been a popular family getaway for generations, but the arrival of Hollywood stars (hello, George Clooney!) has upped its profile. The town of Como sits on the shores of stunning Lake Como, as do several other lovely villages including Tremezzo and Varenna.

Favored activities include sailing, windsurfing and rowing on the lake. Lakeside hikes are flat enough for young children and are paved for pushing a stroller. The area is home to many high-end retail establishments, but there are also numerous authentic open-air markets held in the town squares. It’s fun to shop for fresh produce and delectable picnic provisions.

Recommended Hotel: Hotel Villa Flori

The Eternal City is a must-see for families. Historic sites include the Colosseum, the Bernini fountains and Saint Peter’s Square. Explore the maze of back streets and watch the Romans zip through traffic on motorbikes.

Villa Borghese, Rome’s beloved park, is a good place for the kids to let off steam, perhaps at the playground or the low-tech zoo.

When hunger strikes, sample the city’s most famous pasta dish, cacio e pepe , long ribbons of noodles coated with a windfall of grated cheese and sprinkled with a touch of freshly ground black pepper. For dessert, you’re never far from a refreshing gelato no matter which small, cobblestoned street you venture down.

Recommended Hotel: Starhotels Michelangelo

The birthplace of Christopher Columbus, Genoa is steeped in seafaring traditions. It’s also home one of the best aquariums in the world. Located in the old port, the interactive Aquarium of Genoa houses thousands of sea creatures and many multimedia exhibits. After you’ve exhausted the aquarium, head next door to the Children’s City, an engaging play space.

Genoa is also a convenient base for exploring the Cinque Terre area, a string of five gorgeous seaside villages on the Italian Riviera. Walk along the shoreline promenade, rent beach chairs and umbrellas , and go for a swim in the sea as you watch the parade of boats sail by.

Recommended Hotel: Grand Hotel Savoia

Turin Egyptian Museum

Host of the 2006 Winter Olympics, Turin’s manageable size and family-friendly attractions make this Northern city a winner. The National Museum of Cinema offers spectacular exhibits in Italian and English. Want to fly with ET ? You can do it here as you dive into the smoke-and-mirrors magic of movies.

The Egyptian Museum, with its collection of mummies, is as good as it gets without going to Cairo.

Turin is headquarters of the Italian car manufacturer, Fiat, so it’s a fitting location for the National Automobile Museum. Cars are displayed as sculptural works of art. Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Ferrari are well represented. Hands-on activities make this museum a fine stop for families.

When it’s treat time, Turin is famous for its plethora of chocolate shops that would satisfy even Willy Wonka .

Recommended Hotel: Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte

Naples pizza

This Southern Italian city sits on the Bay of Naples, a prime jumping-off point to catch the ferry for a beach day at one of the nearby volcanic islands such as Ischia.

Naples is also a short distance from both Pompeii and Herculaneum, so it’s an excellent base for families who want to explore the volcanic ruins of these two ancient cities.

In the city center, family-friendly attractions include Naples Underground, a guided tour of the mysteries below the city’s hectic streets and the Naples’ Archaeological Museum.

The Margherita Pizza was invented here and families will want to take a gastronomic plunge into its origins at Pizzeria Brandi, where the original recipe remains intact.

Recommended Hotel: Hotel della Piccola Marina

Child in Italy town

The best places to visit in Italy with kids

A family guide to the best places to visit in Italy with kids: family-friendly destinations in Italy for a perfect family vacation and resources with the practical travel tips you need when traveling around Italy with kids.

Italy is a very family-friendly destination and one of the best places in the world to visit with kids.

Blessed with stunning mountains, coastlines and cities, it is perfect for pretty much and type of trip and any age. It also comes with an added bonus for families: Italians simply adore kids (I am Italian myself, I can absolutely vouch for this)!

In Italy, kids are treated like royalty and they are welcome everywhere: restaurants, tours, even wineries accept kids!

Italy is also safe and varies when it comes to landscapes and experiences.

Fancy an outdoor vacation? Head to the family-friendly Dolomites!

Do you prefer sea and sun? You can choose among infinite family-friendly beaches along the thousands of Kilometers of Italian stunning coastline!

Looking for sightseeing and history? Italy is one of the countries with the highest concentrations of Unesco world heritage sites!

Want everything? You can go to Tuscany and find yourself visiting a hilltop historical village in the morning, going horse riding in the afternoon and lounging by the beach all on the same day!

This vast choice is a boon for travelers but can also be overwhelming: if everything is great, where do you even start choosing? I hope I can help!

I am from Rome and have traveled around Italy extensively.

While I adore trips to far-flung lands, Italy has always delivered special holidays, and this is my selection of the best places to visit in Italy with kids based on our most successful family vacations!

Looking for itinerary ideas? Find here >>> i tinerary ideas for 10 days in Italy with kids

Top 10 places to visit in Italy with kids map

This list of the best places to visit in Italy with family is exhaustive and without a doubt I will add many more as we keep exploring.

However, it is a great starting point if you are planning a trip to Italy with kids and includes places we found excellent for kids and travel guides to the most famous destinations in Italy, all from a family angle!

The places are listed in a loose North to South order.

The Dolomites: the best places to visit in Italy with kids for outdoorsy families

The Dolomites are a stretch of gorgeous mountains in the North East of Italy and one of the best places in Italy for people who love hiking and outdoor pursuits.

Our family hiking in the Dolomites

They are an area of outstanding natural beauty, so much so that they entered the list of UNESCO World Heritage site and indeed, they are the picture-perfect mountains of your imagination!

The peaks here are high, and beautiful yet often accessible thanks to many hiking paths suitable for different ages.

The villages are beautiful and pristine, characterized by a fairy tale style of pointy roofs and flowery balconies that are peculiar to this area and for kids there are lots of activities and things to do ranging from hikes to water parks, open farms, crazy golf to exceptional skiing sloped in the winter.

The best things to do with kids in this area are:

  • Skiing (winter)
  • Mountain playgrounds
  • Animal encounters (Alpine petting zoos and farms)

The best time to go to the Dolomites December – February for skiing and late June- August for hiking.

Many locations on the Dolomites are great for families in summer and winter.

You can find our guide to the Dolomites with kids here.

Venice – the magical city on water your kids won’t believe is real

Venice is unique in the world and a wonderful city to visit with kids.

Gran Canal, Venice, Italy

Entirely developed on water, the city is magical for children and it is full of attractions and activities that will allow even little children to engage with this most peculiar city on water.

Parents of toddlers tend to worry about the safety of a city with canals instead of streets and with good reason.

However, all you need to make a visit to Venice safe and enjoyable with kids is some travel tips to know what to expect and how to tackle this peculiar geography!

Among the many things families will enjoy in Venice, there are the city’s stunning main landmarks such as St Mark’s Square and its pigeons, the option of gondola and boat rides, a boat trip to island of Burano and its colorful houses and kids’ activities such as

  • Kids scavenger hunt tour
  • Glass blowing class
  • Rowing class
  • Mask decorating class

You can find our guide to visiting Venice with kids here .

Venice is one of the best places to visit in Italy with kids in spring and fall especially, perfect for families who want to see one of Italy’s most famous and unique cities without renouncing kids’ fun!

Lake Garda – the picture perfect lake escape for families

Lake Garda is a large Lake in the Northeast of Italy and one of the most family-friendly areas in the entire peninsula.

Lake Garda with kids: Malcecine with promenade along the lake

Nestled between beautiful mountains, it has lovely small beaches perfect for small kids especially, plenty of cycling and hiking opportunities, many playgrounds, pretty towns for sightseeing and it is exceptionally well equipped to welcome families with young children.

The area has many family hotels and campsites with amazing facilities (some have water parks on site!) and has several theme parks that rollercoasters loving kids will adore!

Lake Garda has many lovely towns worth calling home for a while, each with a different atmosphere and entertainment options.

Best visited in summer for water activities; spring and fall for Gardaland.

You can find our guide to Lake Garda with kids here

Liguria – and its rainbow-colored towns that seem out of a fairy tale book

Liguria is a stunning region in the northwest of Italy that most overseas visitors know for two of its most famous locations: Cinque Terre and Portofino!

I adore both; however, there is more to Liguria than these two locations and, especially if traveling with kids, you may find that localities immediately outside these tourism magnets are even better for families!

Chiavari, Sestri Levante, Santa Margherita, and Levanto: these are all towns with wonderful beaches, services for families and a kid-friendly atmosphere and they are perfect for visiting their famous neighbors by train and boat. Among the very best places to visit in Italy with kids in summer !

Here, you can enjoy small-town life, swim, and explore and the excellent train system makes exploring remarkably easy!

In terms of activities, you can take boat trips, fishing trips, learn to make pesto, hike and cycle.

If you are curious about great family spots in Liguria, read here >>> our guide to Liguria with kids .

If you prefer to stay right in the famous places, that’s also easy in Liguria and we found even ‘child unfriendly’ Cinque Terre to is actually pretty child friendly indeed!

Cinque Terre is one of the most famous areas in the whole of Italy, known for colorful villages perched on cliffs plunging into the sea.

Children in Manarola looking at the view

They are not the first place that comes to mind when looking for family-friendly places in Italy however, they are wonderful and it is entirely possible to visit and enjoy them with little children in tow: they are stroller unfriendly but kids are very welcome here and well looked after!

They are a wonderful place to visit in Italy with kids because they mix beautiful and romantic atmospheres parents will love with fun things such (small) beaches and nice playgrounds.

Our family is especially fond of Monterosso and Manarola, as they are home to fabulous playgrounds!

Find our guide to Cinque Terre with kids here

Liguria is best visited in late spring, summer, early autumn.

Tuscany – the home of countryside and towns so beautiful your family will never want to leave

The region of Tuscany is one of the most visited in the whole of Italy and possibly the best place to visit in Italy with kids of all!

Italy countryside

I simply adore the place and have elected it as our go-to place for family summer holidays: we go there every year and we love it every time more.

Tuscany has absolutely anything and everything you may wish for in a family destination.

The Tuscany countryside is stunning and accessible.

Hilltop villages with car-free centers, exciting castles and scenic playgrounds abound, open farms are everywhere and you even have family-friendly wineries, truly showing how easy it is in Italy to have a multi-generational holiday that makes everyone happy!

The whole region is so well equipped to welcome overseas tourism, family activities in Tuscany abound!

Here, you can take cooking classes, gelato classes, go truffle hunting and cycling, visit child-friendly wineries, stay on a farm, go to waterparks (summer) and the beach… You can find here >>> a thorough list of the best activities for families in Tuscany !

Our kids in tuscany on a big bench

As well as the countryside Tuscany has stunning cities and a wonderful coastline with beautiful sandy beaches.

You can choose from a plethora of family-friendly accommodation options, from local guesthouses to all-inclusive resorts and campsites, which makes Tuscany a wonderful choice for all budgets and travel styles.

Tuscany offers its best in the good season. Come in spring, summer and early autumn to make the most of the countryside. Come in the summer for swimming. Check here >>> what to expect if visiting Tuscany with kids in winter

Read our guide to Tuscany with kids here.

Rome – the breathtaking home of the Colosseum and some of the most exciting historical sites for kids

Rome is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and one of my favorite places in Italy to explore with kids.

Yes, I am from Rome and we always go exploring: we never run out of things to see!

Rome with kids: Piazza Navona

There is just so much to see and do here, you can spend a lifetime in the city and never get sick of it or do the same things twice (although you will want to, some of the attractions are just so beautiful!).

Families with very young kids are likely to love the many parks of Rome, the Rome Children Museum Explora, the many piazzas perfect for running around and the fact that Rome main attractions are family and stroller-friendly.

Kids and adults can take cooking classes to learn to make pasta or pizza, get a taste of ancient Rome with a gladiators class (hilarious, it’s super fun) and of course enjoy sightseeing with scavenger hunts tours tailored for children or by getting shuttled around in a golf cart or a vespa with sidecar!

The only downside of Rome is that is has almost too much to see! This is why you need some tips!

You can find out introduction to Rome with kids here or check our my our sister site about Rome here (I am from Rome, it has all my tips!)

Rome is the best place in Italy to visit with kids who love cities and histories. It is at its best in late spring and early autumn.

Amalfi Coast – the stunning coastlines so beautiful local calls it ‘the Divine’

The Amalfi Coast is a stunning stretch of coastline in the South of Italy and one of our favorite places to visit in Italy with kids, especially in spring and summer.

Amalfi town view from the water

The area is mostly known for a scenic drive that connects the several towns of this area offering sweeping views over cliffs plunging into the Mediterranean.

However, it is also highly enjoyable for kids in the good season thanks to its wonderful sea and climate and the many opportunities for boat trips, hiking, and exploring.

The tops things to do here include taking boat trips (to the towns and to Capri), learn to make pizza or cook a real Italian meal, hike, visit the paper museum in Amalfi, take a food tour in Sorrento and swim!

Need to know: The Amalfi Coast doesn’t have indoor entertainment for kids; There are no indoor play centers, malls, or children’s museums. Therefore, I recommend coming here with kids in pool/swimming season only: the sea is big attraction here and you need the weather for it!

The Amalfi Coast is a little like Cinque Terre, in the sense that not all areas are equally child-friendly. However, we discovered many that are such as Minori and, to an extent, Amalfi town itself.

Read our guide to the Amalfi Coast with kids here .

Puglia – the stunning heel of Italy that will charm adults and kids alike

Puglia, the heel of Italy, is a stunningly beautiful region and one of the best places to visit in Italy with kids of all ages if you love small towns, mellow atmospheres and stunning coastlines.

Locorotondo Puglia Italy

A long region, it has a lot to offer.

Its coastline is a vision of beautiful pristine sandy beaches and blue waters, its towns are a picture perfect delight of different architectural styles ranging from baroque churches to the unique trulli of Alberobello , the food is out of this world and the welcome warm and friendly.

Families who want a sea and sun vacation in Italy will find plenty of places to call home for a while here ( Salento area is great to just relax!) however, it is also easy to explore Puglia by car.

Kids are likely to adore the place: the beaches are vast and family-friendly, the towns often car-free and if you get to see the trulli , do expect a wow from little ones – they truly look like fairy homes!

In terms of activities, in Puglia you can visit Fasano Zoo, Castellana Grotte, you can learn to make orecchiette (local pasta), papier mache (in Lecce, it is a local craft), take boat trips, swim (summer) and enjoy the beautiful farms of this region.

This is the best place in Italy for families who want to mix sightseeing and time at the beach

You can read here >>> all our tips to visit Puglia with kids

Puglia is best in: summer for beach time; spring and autumn for a road trip.

Sicily – the stunning island where natural wonders, history and beaches meet

Sicily closes this list because of its location to the South of Italy but don’t this is very much a last but not least scenario!

Sicily is stunning and one of the best places to visit in Italy with kids if you are hoping for a vacation that puts together sightseeing, time at the beach, culture and also the tasting of incredible food!

taormina theater with my daugther in a yellow sweater on one of the audience seats

Sicily is all this and much more!

Visiting Sicily with kids is easy: the island has a very family friendly atmosphere and many lovely kid-friendly beaches perfect for swimming and sandcastle making.

Older kids will be excited by the presence of Mount Etna, an active volcano, and the whole family will enjoy the many pretty towns and archaeological sites that dot the island.

Sicily is a work and there is so much to see and do here, your only issue will be prioritizing what to see! Maybe we can help you make up your mind!

You can find our guide to Sicily with kids here

Family Tours of Italy

Italy Beyond the Obvious can create a personalized trip of a lifetime to Italy that you just can’t create on your own. Our travelers rave about our meticulously crafted custom Italy trips, and having now created more than 300 personalized Italy vacations, we are proud to say we have not had a single big complaint. Our business model is that of a consultant, not a travel agent, therefore we charge fees for our services rather than work from commissions ( contact us to find out how this actually saves you money).

Tell us about your family

Often, parents tell us that if the kids are happy, everyone is happy! Kids of different ages have different needs, and while of course we’ll create whatever you want, we do have some advice.

Travel to Italy with an infant

If you’re bringing your infant to Italy, we know you’ll be bringing a lot of stuff. You’ll need a stroller, a diaper bag, a feeding bag (bring your own formula), extra clothing for the baby, maybe a car seat, and of course your own stuff! It’s virtually impossible to travel light, so we don’t recommend changing hotels frequently. Also, you cannot convince a baby to adjust to the time difference – you’ll need to expose him or her to natural light, try to get them on an Italian eating schedule, and let them adjust naturally. But this can be a great age to travel! Infants are portable so you can see and do a lot while baby sleeps in the stroller or in the baby bjorn.

Travel to Italy with toddlers

Italians love toddlers and toddlers love Italy! They’ll be bored in museums – even the Vatican museums or the amazing Uffizi gallery – but they’ll love chasing pigeons in Italy’s car-free squares and running along pedestrian streets. They’ll love the pasta and the pizza and the gelato, and they’ll have a ball riding the train. They’ll love that they can touch and feel fountains and marble and climb on (some) ruins, and see real castles. We usually don’t recommend taking them to Venice where they might try to escape into the crowds or stress you out as you picture them falling into a canal.

Travel to Italy with school aged children (ages 5 to 10 or so)

Italy is perfect for school-aged children. A good guide can bring history to life for them, and they’ll learn about the Romans, the Etruscans, the Medieval times, or the Renaissance by exploring, touching, tasting, seeing, and playing – not by being lectured at. They’ll love the castles (they can sleep in one if you’d like!) in Tuscany, the boats in Venice, the gladiators in Rome, and of course all the pasta, pizza, and gelato. They’re at a great age: they still listen to their parents and they have enough energy to be out and about with you all day, although sometimes they don’t make it to the Italian dinnertime of 8 pm (we book early dinners for families).

Travel to Italy with tweens and teens

Sometimes traveling with a teenager requires a special approach. We get requests from parents whose teenagers are too cool to go on a family vacation, but they’re too young to stay home alone for two weeks. We create trips that teenagers love! We book Ferrari test drives (they sit in the back), balloon flights over Tuscany, vespa tours (on the back with a driver), rafting excursions, and we find accommodations that might give them a little independence – maybe there’s a great gelateria up the street that they can walk to on their own. And, if you’re open to it, your 14+ year old can participate in wine tastings.

Travel to Italy with adult children

We get requests from parents who have a very narrow time frame for their Italy vacation, because it’s based on the window between when one child finishes school and when another child starts a new job. Coordinating the schedules of adults is not easy, and often, these trips are some of the last family vacations before the kids get married and start families of their own. These trips are essentially planning for a group of adults – the kids have come full circle and are no longer too cool to travel with Mom & Dad. Not only that, they very much appreciate being taken to Italy.

More about italy.

As a treasure trove of artistic and historical wonders, Italy offers timeless beauty and cultural richness. In the central Tuscany region, the streets of Florence are filled with Renaissance architecture, with a skyline dominated by the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, a Gothic art masterpiece. Within the northern Lombardy region, the fashion mecca, Milan, offers an abundance of art galleries and museums, with the most sought-after sight being The Last Supper, a mural painting by Leonardo da Vinci. Bordering the Tyrrhenian Sea in the central Lazio region, Rome is home to the ancient Colosseum, an amphitheater that played host to gladiatorial games, and the Pantheon, a former Roman temple. Perched atop cliffs that overlook the Bay of Naples in the southwestern Campania region, the coastal town of Sorrento is known for its lemon groves, notably some of the best lemons in Italy, they are used to produce the splendor that is Limoncello, a lemon-flavored Italian liqueur. Take a gondola ride through the romantic canals of Venice to explore one of the most unique cities in the world, built on more than 100 islands in the northeastern Veneto region. Savor the sweet symphony of Italy's gastronomic legacy and culinary mastery that spans centuries, with authentic Italian gelato, pasta, and pizza.

11 of the Best Family Resorts in Italy

posted by Charmaine Cortes on July 31, 2023 // last updated on July 31, 2023

Family vacations should be whatever you want them to be. If you wish to relax on beaches, swim in luxurious pools, participate in all the resort activities, or spend your time relaxing, you should be able to do that.

If you’re considering taking your family to the beautiful country of Italy, several great resorts can accommodate a family vacation. From Venice to Tuscany to Florence and the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea, there’s a resort calling your family’s name. Here are 11 of the best family resorts in Italy.

Resort Capo Boi

Sisan family resort, the four seasons milan, belmond hotel cipriani, venice, locanda al colle, parco san marco hotels & beach resort, vivosa apulia resort, borgo pignano, tuscany, the four seasons florence, castello di potentino, final thoughts.

family vacation tours to italy

Italy is a beautiful country to vacation in, especially Sardinia. There are stunning beaches, crystal blue waters, and breathtaking views. If you’re heading to Sardinia, one of the best family resorts is Resort Capo Boi on the southern coast in Villasimius.

Cabo Boi sits on the coast, boasting a beautiful shoreline and mountains behind it. You’ll see it before arriving because it’s a bright white complex with umbrellas and lounge chairs lining the beach. It’s the perfect Italian beach getaway for the whole family.

There are plenty of rooms that can accommodate families of almost any size. While the rooms are luxurious, you’ll spend little time in them with all their activities. You can spend your days by the infinity pool soaking up the sun or lounging on the beach while the kids play in the sea. You can also enjoy a separate family pool with the little ones.

Other activities and amenities you’ll enjoy here include a kids’ club, teens club, outdoor amphitheater, cooking classes, boat excursions, watersports, and more. With four restaurants featuring cuisine from around the world, you’ll never go hungry on your trip.

family vacation tours to italy

One of the newest family resorts in Italy is Sisan Family Resort . It’s nestled near the stunning Lake Garda and offers plenty of activities for people of all ages. It features brightly colored furniture and artwork throughout to cater to children but still feel elegant enough for adults.

There are three swimming pools on the property so not all guests are crowded at one, a splash park that the kids will love, and a children’s club for kids under 12 years old. Their two-bedroom suite is an excellent choice for additional privacy and room when traveling with the whole family.

Upon request, you can use their complimentary high chairs and cribs for the youngest travelers. You can hit the tennis courts, rent bikes to explore the area, and enjoy discounted tickets on nearby excursions and parks when you’re not spending time at the pools.

Unlike other Italian resorts with several dining options, there’s only one restaurant at Sisan Family Resort. Don’t let that deter you, though. They offer a breakfast buffet daily and several Italian dishes for lunch and dinner with kid-friendly options.

For families who love the mountains and being outdoors, CampZero is the perfect Italian resort. It’s situated in Northern Italy, not far from the Switzerland border in Champoluc, Val d’Ayas, Aosta Valley. This modern resort features everything you need to enjoy your family ski trip, even if certain family members prefer not to ski.

CampZero is a charming ski resort that has plenty of slopes right outside the resort’s doors. While most people head to this modern resort to ski, plenty of other things keep you busy and happy during your stay.

There’s a beautiful indoor pool with some of the best views around, saunas, a spa for the adults, rock climbing, mountain biking, hiking, snowshoeing, golfing, and more. For the adrenaline junkies, there’s an ice-climbing wall outside!

After a long day of exploring and adventure, you can sit in the lobby with your family to play games, enjoy live music, or whatever it is you do to wind down. There are two restaurants to enjoy. One is more casual, and the other is more upscale.

family vacation tours to italy

Milan is one of the most visited cities in Italy, and if you’re planning on taking your family to this bustling city, the best resort you can stay in is the Four Seasons Milan . This company is known for catering to families and ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The Four Seasons Milan is in a 15th-century convent and is just steps away from some of the city’s best sights in the fashion district . Every room and suite in this resort features a classic Italian design and is very luxurious. Your kids will love the complimentary cookies and milk in the lobby.

For the littlest of travelers, you can ask the concierge for infant toiletries, cribs, bottle warmers, and other necessities at no charge. Even if you want a date night in Milan or at the spa or on-site restaurant, they offer babysitting services for an additional fee.

Besides wandering around Milan, when you’re staying at the Four Seasons, you’ll enjoy their indoor swimming pool, fitness center, and spa, and they offer discounted tour tickets to things in the area. Don’t forget to check out their delicious on-site restaurant or order room service.

family vacation tours to italy

For the most luxurious experience when staying in Venice, you need to consider the Belmond Hotel Cipriani . Located on the Venetian Lagoon, you’re steps away from some of the best things to do and see in Venice. Families who’ve stayed here rave about how friendly and accommodating the staff are to guests, especially children.

Every room here is beautiful, but when staying with kids, one of the best options is the junior suite pool room. It has enough space for families and is only steps away from its Olympic-sized swimming pool. Since there’s a good chance you’ll be using it a lot during your stay, this is an excellent room choice.

When visiting the pool, you’ll have your own lounge chairs, and the staff will ensure you have everything you need to enjoy your day. Resort staff will help arrange water taxis, dinner reservations if you want to leave the resort for meals, and more.

You can wander through the gardens, play tennis, relax in the spa, and enjoy authentic Italian cuisine at their on-site restaurant. The restaurant is stunning and jets into the water, giving you fantastic views.

family vacation tours to italy

Locanda al Colle is a fantastic option if you’re looking for a smaller family resort to stay in Tuscany. While you’ll feel like you’re on vacation, the entire resort has a family vibe that you don’t always get with other resorts.

This tranquil family resort allows you to kick back and relax amongst the olive trees and down by the sea. While it doesn’t have a private beach, it’s only ten minutes from one. The resort is in a converted farmhouse and only has 12 rooms total, so you’re bound to make friends with other vacationing families.

During your stay, you can lounge by their peaceful pool, explore the grounds, and make great memories with your family. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable about things to do in the area and creates a tailored itinerary for your family.

Something unique about this resort is that there’s a chef who cooks all your meals. It’s almost like having a private chef! You’re even allowed to help or learn more if you like. Keep in mind that this resort is only open from March through October.

family vacation tours to italy

Parco San Marco Beach Resort overlooks the stunning Lake Lugano . Since it sits near Switzerland’s border, you get the perfect combination of Mediterranean and Alpine atmosphere. It’s like having two vacations in one.

They call all the rooms here apartments, and all the apartments rest on the hillside so you can see the beautiful lake below. The two-bedroom apartments are ideal for larger families because there are several beds, and they also have a pull-out couch.

You can take advantage of indoor and outdoor pools at Parco San Marco so that you can have water fun regardless of the weather. If you prefer dipping your toes into the lake, you can post up at their private beach for the day. For the kids, they have a fun kids’ club with games, movies, and other activities.

While your kids hang out in the kids’ club, you can book a spa treatment to relax. The infinity saltwater pool looks over the lake and is only for those 16 and up. The family can play volleyball together, walk around the lake, and enjoy the nine restaurants and bars for an unforgettable family vacation.

family vacation tours to italy

The Vivosa Apulia Resort is in the Lecce region of Italy, and it overlooks the Ionian Sea. This eco-resort is perfect for families, especially those who care about the environment. It’s inside a park, so you have some great hiking and walking trails nearby to explore.

There are ten buildings total on the resort property, and you’ll find courtyards with beautiful flowers in each of them. Regardless of your chosen room, you’ll get a balcony or terrace with stunning views. We recommend their family and superior rooms because they’re bigger.

The main pool on the property has four sections with varying depths, making it great for families. You can take advantage of their private beach on the Ionian Sea , and your children can splash and play as much as they want in the designated children’s pool with shallow depths.

Activities include relaxing at the spa, kids’ clubs, sporting tournaments, yoga classes, kayaking, windsurfing, golf lessons, sailing lessons, and more. You’ll love the all-inclusive dining option, which has a breakfast buffet, barbeques throughout the day, and meals at the main restaurant. Adults will love the pool bar included in the all-inclusive package.

family vacation tours to italy

Borgo Pignano is an 18th-century villa on a 750-acre estate. It’s in the Tuscan countryside and close to several great cities and towns in the region. Its excellent location in Tuscany makes it the perfect resort to stay at when you want to explore Italy outside of resort activities.

Their signature suites are large enough for families, and they all have beautiful views of the olive trees and greenery surrounding the resort. You can enjoy several pools and bask in the Italian sun, go horseback riding, take painting and cooking classes, and more.

Kids will love spending their days painting, swimming, and frolicking around the resort property. While the kids are doing their own thing, you can partake in wine tastings from some of the best wineries in Italy.

There are minimal restaurants here because of the small resort, but we promise you won’t be disappointed. The tables on the terrace are perfect for any meal, but breakfast is an excellent time to eat here to start your day with great views. Our favorite part is the long chef’s table in the kitchen that feels like you’re eating dinner with a huge Italian family.

family vacation tours to italy

You can never go wrong with staying at a Four Seasons, and this one in Florence is an excellent option for families. It’s perfect for people of all ages and has activities that will keep you occupied for hours on end. You can split your time between relaxing activities and more adventurous ones.

When you first walk into the resort, you’ll see sculptures and elegant paintings that set the tone for the entire resort. There are standard hotel rooms, but the villas and suites are the stars of the show here. They’re spacious, luxurious, and have enough room for your family to kick back and relax.

The outdoor pool looks like something out of a movie and is one of the resort’s highlights. It’s the perfect place to relax, play, and work on your tan. While the adults enjoy more adult activities like wine tastings, date nights, or fitness, the kids can hang out at the kids’ club.

They also offer babysitting services if need be. The food options are abundant here, and there’s something for everyone. There’s authentic Italian food, pizza, and plenty of kid-approved options. You can get gelato almost any time of the day, and the room service option is a family favorite.

family vacation tours to italy

If you want to be the coolest parent ever and take your kids to stay in a resort that looks like a real castle, then Castello di Potentino is the place to book. This resort looks like it’s straight out of a fairytale, and even the oldest kids will find it magical and charming.

The resort sits in the mountains of Tuscany, where you’ll have views of a dormant volcano, olive trees, and other stunning scenery. Adults will love the wine tastings the hosts provide, and there are plenty of non-wine-related activities too.

Castello di Potentino is family-run, so they know how to cater to families of all types. They’ll help you book excursions off the resort’s property if you want to explore Italy and ensure your stay is as comfortable as possible.

You and your family can enjoy barbeques on the resort property, private chef meals, and live music in the courtyards and around the grounds. The chefs will ensure they always have kid-approved meals but will create elegant options for the less picky family members.

Italy is a great European country to bring the whole family to. You’ll find that these beautiful family resorts in Italy have something to offer all members of your family. Whether you want to relax, explore, or do a little bit of both, these resorts will make your Italian family getaway unforgettable.

Summer is approaching and if you want a big family vacation abroad, now’s the time to start planning. When traveling with kids in tow, though, it’s important to pick a destination that caters to the interests and needs of every family member. Not to mention, you'll want someplace that is easily accessible and easy to navigate. Without further ado, here’s a list of family-friendly Europe destinations that check all the boxes, including public parks, playgrounds, kid-friendly museums, beaches and a whole host of sophisticated cultural and historic attractions.

The 51 Best Vacations for Kids in the U.S. for 2024

  • Main Attractions: Cuevas del Drach, Palma Aquarium, Katmandu Park, Jungle Parc
  • Where to Stay: Zafiro Palace Andratx , Son Terrola , Fantastic Villa in Alaro

Also spelled ‘Majorca,’ this gorgeous Mediterranean oasis is one of Spain’s Balearic islands. You can expect scenery that includes lush limestone mountains, sheltered coves and the pristine shorelines of the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. The island is also home to many ancient ruins and historic architecture, so there’s plenty to see. As for family-friendly activities, we recommend a visit to the island’s highly interactive and budget-friendly aquarium, as well as a ziplining adventure the whole family will enjoy in Jungle Parc and perhaps a visit to Katmandu Park for thrill seekers who crave an adrenaline-fueled theme park experience.

  • Why We Recommend It: big city escape, cultural attractions, historic attractions, shopping
  • Main Attractions: Buckingham Palace, Hamleys toy store, Natural History Museum, London Eye
  • Where to Stay: Royal Lancaster London , The Resident Covent Garden , Montcalm Royal London House

England’s capital city is huge so it goes without saying that there’s an abundance of things to do. Tour the city with a double decker bus ride, stroll the many public parks and be sure not to miss Buckingham Palace , which is an obvious sightseeing must. The Natural History Museum is also quite impressive and a great educational activity that will engage all members of the brood, and we’d be remiss not to mention Hamleys , the world’s oldest toy store and the largest one in the U.K.

3. Prague, Czech Republic

  • Why We Recommend It: walkable city, fairytale vibes, cultural attractions, historic architecture, rich cultural life
  • Main Attractions: Prague Zoo, Charles Bridge, Slavonic Island, Prague castle, Dancing House, Museum of Senses

A visit to Prague truly feels like stepping into a fairytale—namely because, in addition to the world famous Prague Castle , the city is replete with Gothic cathedrals, Romanesque chapels, Baroque palaces and beautiful gardens. The architectural attractions alone make Prague a truly breathtaking and memorable European destination, but the relatively small and highly walkable city has more going for it than just its striking looks. The Museum of Senses provides a quirky interactive experience that will captivate visitors of all ages and the Prague Zoo , which you can access by way of a charming river cruise, is one of the best in the world and features many interactive exhibits that will delight children. Before you head back stateside, be sure to spend a day at the Slavonic Island , which sits on the Vltava river and boasts beautiful scenery, ample park space, paddle boat tours and a very impressive playground.

Amsterdam has a reputation for having a few somewhat unsavory attributes, but forget what you’ve heard because this gem in the Netherlands is perfectly family-friendly and brimming with things to do and see. The city has romantic vibes and unmistakable European charm thanks to its extensive canal system and picturesque brick-laid streets lined with historic Dutch buildings. Amsterdam is designed for bike-riding but families can easily get around on foot as well. Plan your visit for when the famous tulip garden is in bloom (usually from late March to mid-May), browse the botanicals at the Bloemenmarkt and be sure to avail yourself of some of the excellent street food before you head to beautiful Vondelpark for a picnic. Families looking for water recreation won’t be disappointed by Zandvoort Beach , a scenic destination where hiking, water sport opportunities and sunbathing are all on the menu.

That said, if you’re traveling with younger kids who have a lower tolerance for all the sightseeing, you’ll be pleased to know that Rome has plenty of kid-oriented activities on offer as well. The city has an abundance of parks and playgrounds, interactive museums geared towards the younger crowd and a food scene that will undoubtedly appeal to palates both young and old. (I mean, who doesn’t like gelato and pizza, right?) There’s also plenty of shopping to be done, so if you have a teen in tow, you might want to agree on an allowance before you arrive.

8. Barcelona, Spain

  • Why We Recommend It: vibrant street performances, food scene, beach, historic attractions, cultural attractions
  • Main Attractions: Park Güell, Cosmocaixa, Montjuic Magic Fountain, Casa Batilo, Labyrinth Park

You can aimlessly walk the streets and count on being treated to some free, family-friendly entertainment from the many street performers, and much of the sightseeing has all-ages appeal as well. Younger ones will enjoy the spectacular light show provided by the Montjuic Magic fountain , Park Güell is an oh-so beautiful tribute to architect Antoni Gaudi’s work that has ample green space and whimsical architecture that invites imagination and play. Finally, Labyrinth Park , one of Barcelona’s best-kept secrets is as it sounds an expansive maze; it’s also a beautiful historic garden the whole family will be happy to get lost in for hours.

  • Why We Recommend It: walkable, historic attractions, cultural attractions, beach
  • Main Attractions: Sao Jorge’s Castle, Oceanarium, Comercio Plaza, Belem Tower

Lisbon’s magical architectural landmarks like Sao Jorge’s Castle and the nearby town of Sintra provide a fairytale experience to visitors of all ages, and there’s no shortage of other sightseeing opportunities that will fill the whole family with a sense of wonder (like Jamor Adventure Park and the Oceanarium aquarium). The walkability of Portugal’s capital also makes it particularly appealing to those traveling with kids and the gorgeous beach is a major bonus that promises some much-needed chill time once you’ve checked off the other memorable attractions on your itinerary.

family friendly europe destinations cote d'azur

10. Provence-Côte d’Azur, France

  • Why We Recommend It: beaches, natural beauty, historic attractions, laidback vibes
  • Main Attractions: Provencal villages, Palais des Papes, Cafe Van Gogh, Camargue National Park, Pont du Gard
  • Where to Stay: Hotel de Provence , Hotel Apollinaire Nice , La Bastide Blanche

Provence, a region located in the sunny, southeastern part of France that borders Italy and the Mediterranean Sea, is quite large and every village is worth visiting. In fact the hardest part about taking your family to Provence is narrowing your itinerary. If you want a glamorous beach vacation, Monaco, Nice and St. Tropez fit the bill. Avignon, on the other hand, sits on the Rhone River and boasts many historic attractions and sightseeing opportunities, including Palais des Papes and Pont du Gard; while the smaller provencal villages promise a laid back vacation that still offers plenty to do, plus sunny weather and small town charm. In other words, when planning an itinerary in Provence, you’ll have to do some picking and choosing (and should consider renting a car so you can explore a few different places), but this list of kid-friendly attractions in the region is a good place to start.

family friendly europe destinations kids on vacation in Greece

11. Crete, Greece

  • Why We Recommend It: beaches, historic attractions, natural attractions, outdoor activities, wildlife viewing
  • Main Attractions: Elafonissi Beach, Balos Lagoon, Cretan Caves, Amazonas Park, Samaria Gorge
  • Where to Stay: Lyttos Beach , Nana Golden Beach , Vraskos Villa

The breathtaking coastline of Greece’s biggest island is home to some of Europe’s most beautiful (and family-friendly) beaches, as well as some stunning natural attractions like the Cretan Caves, including one where Zeus was supposedly born, and gorgeous hikes at places like Samaria Gorge . For more specifically kid-oriented activities, Amazonas Park is a charming little zoo in a scenic hillside location that offers young visitors the opportunity to pet and feed the animal, as well as other wildlife attractions like the CRETaquarium and Reptisland , which allows for a hands-on experiences with the various reptilian species at the preserve.

12. Berlin, Germany

  • Why We Recommend It: historic attractions, cool vibes, walkable
  • Main Attractions: Berlin Zoo, Museum of Natural History, Tierpark Berlin, Berlin Wall
  • Where to Stay: Grand Hyatt Berlin , The Circus Hotel , Large House with Garden

Berlin, known to be a cultural hub in Germany, has a vibrant art scene and an effortlessly cool character. It’s also a big city with a ton of things to do for families, including the impressive Berlin Zoo , enriching and interactive Museum of Natural History and, of course, some pretty significant historic landmarks. Tierpark , another Berlin zoo, serves up a particularly unique and fascinating experience where visitors can see animals in their lush natural habitats. Boat tours and kinder museums can almost be included on the itinerary for a full family-friendly experience, but the gist of it is that you’ll have plenty of options when visiting Berlin.

family friendly europe destinations copenhagen

13. Copenhagen, Denmark

  • Why We Recommend It: kid-friendly attractions, parks, food scene, walkable
  • Main Attractions: Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen Zoo, Harbour Baths, Amager Strand
  • Where to Stay: Nimb Hotel , 71 Nyhavn Hotel , Lovely Flat in Copenhagen

Perhaps one of the most kid-friendly destinations on the list, Copenhagen is full of European charm and positively brimming with playgrounds and parks to keep younger ones occupied in between more structured activities. There’s also a pretty awesome science center, Experimentarium , where kids can engage in activities that encourage learning through play and Tivoli Gardens —an amusement park like none other, providing all the thrills of a theme park you might find stateside, with the added benefit of a far more scenic experience featuring gorgeous, manicured gardens. Oh, and did we mention the street fare in Copenhagen is a foodie’s dream?

  • Why We Recommend It: historic attractions, cultural attractions, museums, parks
  • Main Attractions: The WurstelPrater, Max Winter Park, Schonbrunn Palace, MuseumsQuartier, Butterfly House
  • Where to Stay: Boutique Hotel am Stephansplatz, Hotel Kaiserhof Wien , Luxury Villa

Kid-friendly museums ( Museum of Illusions , Children’s Museum and Butterfly House , to name a few) abound in the Austrian capital of Vienna, which is renowned for its rich culture and history. Best of all, these attractions are all located within close proximity to each other in the MuseumsQuartier, so you won’t have to run your kids ragged while trying to pack in as much fun as possible. There are also waterparks all over the city and a whole host of cultural attractions and historic attractions, including the truly magical and awe-inspiring Schoenbrunn Palace .

15+ Things To Do In Tuscany Italy

T uscany. The word itself evokes a feeling in you of green rolling hills, Tuscan trees, wine, a slower pace of life, and the Tuscan sun! In this post, we will share our list of the top things to do in Tuscany.

When planning a trip to Europe you will want to have Tuscany on your list (along with Cinque Terre and Rome )! The food makes it 100% worth it not to mention that Tuscany is one of the most instagrammable places in Italy .

Tuscany is a region located on the western side of central Italy bordering the Ligurian and the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is home to large cities like Florence and Pisa and has a gorgeous landscape of hills and mountains.

It is a region known for its agriculture and wine. Being home to influential figures in the history of art and science and amazing museums. It is a large area to cover so you will want to decide how you want to spend your time in Tuscany.

  • Agriturismo Farm – You can choose to immerse yourself in the Tuscan culture by staying at an Agriturismo Farm.
  • Big City – You can explore the big cities of Florence and Pisa and spend days exploring the city, restaurants, history and the museums.
  • Walled Cities – You can explore the historic walled cities and all of their tiny small streets, delicious gelato and history.
  • Wine – Make it all about the wine and wine tasting. Don’t forget to try the olive oil too!

Whatever you choose you are going to love Tuscany and everything it brings to the table. Below we share our recommendations on how to do a little bit of everything when you are in Tuscany.

Getting Around

If you want to explore all around Tuscany you are going to need to rent a car, hire a driver or join a tour. If you are just going from Pisa to Florence you can take the train but getting out into the Tuscan countryside (which we do recommend) you will need another way to get around.

When we went we took a train to Pisa and rented a car at the airport there . We did have to walk from the train station to the airport it was about a 20 minute walk.

Renting a car in Tuscany was not difficult and I am glad we did it, it gave us the freedom to stay where we wanted to and to explore all over Tuscany!

The roads are tight but you are driving on the same side of the car and road as in the US (I’m looking at you UK!) so it wasn’t that bad at all. It just took a minute or a few miles to get used to it. We only ended up driving the wrong way on one street . . . really that was all and it all worked out.

After our week in Tuscany, we returned the car and took the train from Pisa to Florence. We would not recommend a car for visiting Florence. It isn’t needed.

Where To Stay

Tuscany is a large area. Here is a map of where we stayed and how far out the different places we visited were. If you have specific cities you want to visit while in Tuscany you may want to find a place that is close to those.

The roads are almost all country roads and none of them are just straight. That means there is extra time added on for driving. From our location at the Diacceronia Agriturismo it was a 1 hour 15 minute drive to get to Lucca. Volterra – even though it looks a lot closer was 30 minutes and San Gimignano was about 40 minutes.

Florence was almost a 90 minute drive but we didn’t plan to explore Florence while we were staying at Diacceroni. Instead we stayed in Florence for 3 nights which we would definitely recommend you do.

We thought our location was perfect for what we wanted to do and we would recommend it IF you have a car. But based on the activities you want to do and the cities you want to visit you will want to pull up a map.

Agriturismo Farm

Stay at an Agriturismo farm . These are farm stays and one of the coolest ways to truly experience the Tuscan countryside. I researched a variety of places to stay when we were in Tuscany and they ranged from bigger cities like Pisa to small towns like San Gimignano. Throughout my search, I kept coming across these Agriturismo options and knew I needed to dig in deeper!

The further I looked the more I knew this is where we needed to stay. In a sense, it is staying on a company’s farm/property usually in an apartment, villa, or in our case a glamping tent! The place we picked made wine, wheat, Prosecco, jams, and many more delicious things!

When we were going it was the off-season so unfortunately, we missed out on the daily planned activities that started just a couple of weeks after we left. But what that meant is we almost had the whole place to ourselves and we really got to know the owner and the amazing people working there. It was one of our top experiences in our whole 3-month trip to Europe!

Ok, so now that you know you should say at an Agriturismo Farm while you are visiting Tuscany let’s get into more details on what to do. And never fear there will be more details on our stay down below under our Where To Stay section. Make sure to keep reading to that section so you don’t miss out on pasta making, truffle hunting, wine tasting, and more!!

Top Things To Do In Tuscany

We were able to experience the truffle hunting, pasta making and wine tasting with 5 course meal at the Agriturismo farm we were staying at and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Truffle Hunting

What an experience! They had a local Truffle hunter come with his 2 dogs and they took us truffle hunting on their property. He showed us how to truffle hunt, talked about the history of truffle hunting, and off we went!

We found multiple truffles – well the dogs did! And the kids were able to dig them up. After we found them they brought them to the chef and he made us an appetizer with the truffles. AMAZING!!

We also got to meet his sweet dogs and got to know more about them. When in Tuscany do this!!

Pasta Making

We knew we wanted to do Pasta Making while in Italy and it was perfect that they offer this right on-site. Each one of us had our own station and the local chef walked us through the process of how to make multiple different kinds of pasta from scratch.

We got to choose which kind we wanted to make. After that, we used a few ingredients they had given us and made our pasta.

We came back later that night and enjoyed our pasta for dinner! They also offer Pizza making classes which would be awesome to do too.

Wine Tasting with 5 course meal

We did this one with just Craig and I and my parents. It was exactly how you would picture a Tuscan dinner – relaxed, long and delicious!!

They brought out 5 different courses and 5 different wines. It was done at a leisurely pace with history shared on each wine and dish we had. It was such a fun night. Another top recommended thing to do when visiting Tuscany!

One of the beautiful sites of Northern Italy is the Apuan Alps. These majestic mountains overlook the coastline. To the locals, this mountain range is known as the Marble Mountains, because of its famous marble quarries. If you love hiking the Apuan Alps are filled with amazing trails and one of the largest cave systems.

Traditional Cooking Class with Dessert

Can you really go to Italy without learning how to make pasta and dessert? With this great cooking class , you will learn how to make 3 different types of authentic pasta and a traditional dessert. And the best part is after the class you get to eat what you prepared.

Places to visit in Tuscany

When in Tuscany we knew we wanted to visit as many walled cities as we could. What I didn’t really plan for was where we were staying and how close/far everything was. If you are someone who likes a tight itinerary where everything flows and makes sense I recommend picking out what places you want to visit in Tuscany first and from there figure out what part of Tuscany you should stay.

We did the opposite. But in the end, it all worked out and there was no way we were going to see all of Tuscany in 1 week so it was all good.

I listed Volterra first because it was my favorite. It is so hard to believe that these types of towns actually still exist. It was literally like stepping back in time. This gorgeous hilltop town in Tuscany should not be missed.

No matter what you do when you are here make sure to set aside time just to walk the streets and explore, take pictures and just imagine yourself here hundreds of years ago.

Here is what we did when we visited.

Parking In Volterra

You can’t park in the town. This is serious – don’t do it. It will ruin your trip to come out and find a ticket, or worse, your rental car towed away!

Instead, find a lot to park in outside of town and be prepared to walk up the street and when I say up I mean uphill to get into Volterra.

We parked here as this made sense based on the direction we came into town and because it was by a grocery store and we needed to get groceries before heading back to our glamping tent. Parcheggio “Torricella”, Viale Carlo Cassola, 56048 Volterra PI, Italy

A few other options we came across were: Parcheggio Porta Fiorentina parking lot (GPS: 43.403735, 10.860952), Parcheggio Macelli (GPS: 43.404381, 10.861361) or you could try the Parcheggio Docciola lot (GPS: 43.403384, 10.863572). The Vallebona lot is residents only so even though it looks tempting don’t do it! For any of these make sure to read the signs and that they haven’t changed anything about who can park here.

Map Of What We Did In Volterra:

Click here for the Interactive Map.

View point Teatro Romano

From here you can view the Teatro Romano ruins. They are really well preserved and it was interesting to look down at them from above and imagine what they were like hundreds of years ago.

You can go down to explore the ruins and see the museum. But unfortunately, when we were there they were closed.

San Michele Arcangelo

In Europe, you can’t not stop in a church. They are almost all unique and have amazing architecture and a story to tell. Admission into the sanctuary is free but you have to book a guided tour if you want to see the crypt.

L’isola del Gusto Gelateria

You don’t go anywhere in Italy without getting Gelato! This one did not disappoint! Be prepared for each shop to tell you that they are the best in Italy and why. It is fun to hear and we loved everyone’s passion for Gelato!

Palazzo dei Priori

We kind of stumbled into this one. It is the Bell Tower that you can pay to climb to the top of! Ask them about the city pass so you can also get entry to the Cistern and Archeologico park. Or book a private tour of Volterra and visit Palazzo dei Priori and the Cathedral.

Cisterna Romana

An old cistern that you can climb down and into. It was huge down there! Warning, if you don’t like tight spiral staircases you might want to sit this one out. If you make the trek to the bottom you will be amazed at how well-preserved this cistern is.

Parco Archeologico “Enrico Fiumi”

This green space is located in the middle of the city and is another set of ancient ruins to walk around and explore or a great place to stop and take a break. Be sure to check out the view of the Medici Fortress from the park.

La Mangiatoia

Stop here at the end of the day for a HUGE pizza. Seriously it was the largest pizza we had in Italy!

Map of the day: https://goo.gl/maps/B1Jy5SfP8XCpbs8y6

San Gimignano

We had heard a lot of good things about San Gimignano. We actually almost stayed here. I am glad we didn’t since the Agriturismo farm was so good. But after visiting I could see coming back to stay for 2-3 nights right in the middle of town.

It is another walled city on the top of a hill and had so much charm!! Unfortunately the day we were there it was super rainy. But that didn’t stop us from exploring.

We also knew we had to get Gelato here. We heard again that it was the best in Italy. I told you people like to say this!

Parking in San Gimignano

Parking was very easy here. We parked in this lot: Parking Publico, Via Bagnaia, 89, 53037 San Gimignano SI, Italy.

Map Of Our Day In San Gimignano

Click here for the interactive map.

Piazza della Cisterna – Town Square area

When we first got there we walked the streets and made our way to the Piazza Della Cisterna. It was like the town square area and was so cool to just stand in the middle and look around.

Gelateria Dondoli – Gelato

Right in the Piazza is the Gelato place! We got our Gelato and continued exploring San Gimignano. The architecture, the doors, the towers. It is all so cool!

San Gimignano 1300 – Model of the city

We didn’t even plan to go here but came across the building and went in and they have this awesome model of the whole town. Well worth a stop! Plus a cute gift shop.

Chiesa di Sant’Agostino Church

From the outside, you couldn’t even tell this was a church. But once you opened the door and walked in it was gorgeous.

Cheese Shop

Via S. Matteo, 66, 53037 San Gimignano SI, Italy (website: https://www.formedarte.it/ )

Another random stop that was so worth it! Cheese is like Gelato for me in Europe. I see it and I want it! We came across this shop that wasn’t even on Google maps and headed in. The lady inside was amazing and she let us try all different kinds of cheeses and told us all about where they come from, and why they tasted different, and asked us questions to try to figure out which cheese we would prefer.

With it being such a rainy day we didn’t get to explore San Gimignano the way we wanted to. But what we did say definitely made us add it to this list and we 100% want to go back!

Lucca is one of the bigger cities in Tuscany and still has the full wall around the city intact! Here is what we recommend when you visit Lucca.

Parking in Lucca

Depending on where you are coming in from you are going to park in a lot that is located outside of the city walls. You should put: Parcheggio gratuito into Google maps and see what comes up for you based on the route you are taking into Lucca. Parcheggio gratuito means free parking.

Map Of What We Did In Lucca

I used this view for the map so you can better see where the city wall is and how it goes around the whole city.

For an interactive map click here.

We also downloaded the GPSMyCity guide of Lucca so we could learn more about the city and share it with the kids.

Ride Bikes Around The City Wall

There is a path that goes around the whole top of the City Wall. When we got there we found the closest bike rental place and rented 4-person bikes to take around the wall!

We rented our bikes from the corner of Via Francesco Carrara & Via San Girolamo, 55100 Lucca LU, Italy. The place isn’t listed on Google – but it looked legit . . . so we went with it. We took the bike up to the top of the wall and made our way all the way around the wall.

The route is 2.7 miles. Click here to see the route.

It was a little bit of a workout but not bad and was a great way to see the city!

Piazza San Martino

This large piazza, located in the center of Lucca, holds many events for the city and also has a Romanesque style cathedral that is worth seeing! We didn’t go inside but from the outside it is very impressive to look at.

Guinigi Tower

We paid to climb a lot of steps up to the Guinigi Tower. You can see the tower from all over town and it has full-grown trees on top of it!

It was cool to climb up there and it gave us a great view of the city.

Piazza dell’Anfiteatro

This circular shape piazza is built on the grounds of an ancient Roman amphitheater. It is one of the most recognizable piazza’s in Tuscany due to its shape and the colorful buildings around the piazza. You can access the piazza from 4 “doors” that lead you into it.

Walk through the city

It is always good to just wander through the city streets to see what you come across and to just explore the city without a plan! There are also a variety of Piazzas throughout the city that you can stop at.

Pizza – Pizzeria da Felice

You can’t eat enough pizza while you are in Italy. It’s all so tasty and a very cheap meal. This was a little shop where you order the pizza and bring it outside to stand and eat or grab one of the 2 small tables inside.

Be aware you are eating along a very narrow street that cars do come down! The cars go slow but just a heads up this isn’t going to be a sit down and relax kind of meal.

Visit the historic city of Siena and check out the Piazza del Campo. It is said to be one of Europe’s greatest medieval squares. Siena is one of 7 Unesco World Heritage Sites in Tuscany. While walking through the city be sure to check out Duomo to see the masterpieces made by Michelangelo on a guided tour .

You can never eat too much while in Italy. Be sure to take a Food and Wine Tour of Siena to experience the best tastes the city has to offer.

I am not going to include Florence in this post as we have a whole post coming on Florence AND Florence needs its own trip! When you visit Florence you will want to stay in the city so you can walk everywhere. See the amazing renaissance art at the Uffizi Gallery, do a local food tour, visit the Piazzale Michelangelo for sunset, and check out the Ponte Vecchio to name a few things!

When you visit Tuscany you will want to stay out in the Tuscan countryside or in one of the walled cities. If this isn’t an option there are a lot of day trips from Florence that you can take to explore more of Tuscany.

Here are a few great options:

From Florence spend a day visiting the beautiful medieval cities of Siena, San Gimignano, and Monteriggioni. This great tour includes wine and olive oil tastings.

Explore the Tuscan countryside and winding roads via Vespa on this guided Vespa tour.

See the beauty of the floating city of Venice with this great guided tour that leaves from Florence. Spend a full day exploring Venice on this amazing guided tour.

We went into Pisa to rent the car but that was it. But we were just too excited to get to our glamping tent that we didn’t take the time to explore Pisa. We have heard great things about it and of course you can go and see the leaning tower of Pisa!

Here are a few other things we saw that would be fun to do in Pisa:

Diaccorni Farm Stay

We stayed for a week at Diacceroni Agriturismo Farm and it was amazing! By staying at a family-run place for a week you really get comfortable and start to feel like you are part of the family.

The owner is walking around all the time and checking in on you. So are all of the workers from the waitresses to the chefs and the social media person. We felt so welcomed and had an amazing time!

If you come in the summer season they have weekly activities set up (pizza making, welcome dinner, etc). We came in the off-season so none of this was going on yet. Which may have been better?? Since we got to spend more time with the people who work here since they weren’t as busy!

The one we stayed at is known for its wheat production and also has a delicious line of wine. At the front store, they had a shop filled with pasta, wine, sauces, etc. You were able to select whatever you wanted and write down in a book what you took and how much it was. At the end of the week, you pay for all of it.

They also had a huge breakfast spread every morning and would make omelets to order. It was a set fee for the all-you-could-eat buffet-style breakfast with yummy coffee and juices too.

You could make a reservation for lunch or dinner and order off of the menu. We did this a couple of nights and got the Florentine steak multiple times! Most of the food is local from the farm which means it is so fresh!!

When the weather was nice we were able to sit out on these gorgeous spots overlooking Tuscany. It was so nice to be able to just walk everywhere, have a nice leisurely breakfast or dinner and walk back. In the summer they also have a saltwater pool available.

Besides all the great food they offer a variety of activities that they offer on-site: Horseback riding, 4X4 rides, wine tasting, and tours.

We are going to stay true to our one recommendation of the Dacciaroni Agriturismo Farm . They have a variety of options for what type of place you can stay in. We opted for the glamping tents and loved it!

Scamacca put PlayStation away and began scoring. Now game time may come as center forward for Italy

ROME (AP) — The message was clear from Italy coach Luciano Spalletti : Put your PlayStation away and start focusing more on scoring goals.

The results have been wondrous for Gianluca Scamacca , who has scored nine goals in 11 matches for Atalanta since Spalletti dropped him from the Azzurri squad in March for his video game obsession.

“If someone wants to waste their time, that’s their choice. But then don’t come on my national team,” Spalletti said, noting how several players were up all night before a decisive European Championship qualifying match against Ukraine in November. The Azzurri drew 0-0 — just enough to qualify.

“It would have been the same thing if they were watching a TV series. It’s an addiction and it’s not good for sleeping, doctors say,” Spalletti added.

Now Scamacca is ready to fill Italy’s gaping hole at center forward just in time for Euro 2024 in Germany.

Ciro Immobile has been Italy’s go-to man at center forward for years but has never performed as well with the national team as he has at Lazio and, at 34, is likely to have his best years behind him.

The crisis at center forward grew so severe that previous Italy coach Roberto Mancini recruited Argentine-born striker Mateo Retegui to join the Azzurri. And Retegui has performed admirably with four goals in six matches.

Scamacca has just one goal — scored against England — in 15 matches with Italy. But over the past two months he’s developed into a new player, finally realizing the potential that has hovered over him ever since he came up through Lazio and Roma’s youth systems.

He is a player who is physically and technically complete, capable of blasting powerful shots at the goal while standing still with both feet or pulling off leaping, acrobatic efforts.

His talents have been on full display recently with a brace in Atalanta’s 3-0 win at Liverpool in the Europa League quarterfinals, a goal and an assist to help overturn a first-leg deficit against Fiorentina in the Italian Cup semifinals, and the opening goal in a 1-1 draw at Marseille on Thursday in the first leg of the Europa League semifinals.

“He was exceptional against us — really, really good. He was difficult to play against,” Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp said. “He was great in the air and great on the floor. I didn’t know him too well when he came to West Ham. It didn’t work out well 100% there, but it can happen because the Premier League is a difficult league to play. You can see he has great quality.

“But for a specific way of play, I think he is a fantastic option. A really focused player who can bring the ball down and give time to push up. He is a threat in the box. It’s a really interesting package,” Klopp added.

Italy hasn’t had a true center forward since perhaps the days of Christian Vieri, Luca Toni and Alberto Gilardino.

So if Scamacca can produce from the No. 9 position, he’ll provide a reference point for the likes of fellow forwards Federico Chiesa, Giacomo Raspadori and Nicolò Zaniolo

Atalanta is a team that usually relies on developing home-grown talent or purchasing young foreigners with hidden potential on the cheap. But the Bergamo squad spent 25 million euros ($27 million) to bring Scamacca back to Italy from West Ham, where he scored only three goals in 16 Premier League matches and had his season cut short by a knee injury.

But Scamacca did excel with West Ham in the Europa Conference League, and he now has six goals in this season’s Europa League — demonstrating an affinity for continental play — which could also bode well for the Euros, where Italy is in a group with Spain, Croatia and Albania.
