FlightScope Xi Tour Launch Monitor Review

50 Words or Less

The FlightScope Xi Tour launch monitor offers all the data of Trackman or the FlightScope X2 but at a price that’s slightly more affordable.

Introduction

There is an increasing number of launch monitor-type devices being offered to the recreational golfer, but at the top levels of golf there are only three names: Trackman, Foresight, and FlightScope.  While there’s no doubt that Trackman’s association with the PGA Tour and it’s enormous price tag have created the impression that it’s the creme de la creme, FlightScope offers a number of products with the same technology at much more reasonable prices.

Ease of Use & Setup

As someone who has used FlightScope on and off for the last six years, I can attest to the fact that they have significantly improved the ease of use of their launch monitors.  That said, they still require a substantial commitment of time if you want to use them effectively.

First, the unit must be charged (or plugged in).  The charge lasts a long time, but it also takes a long time.  If you want to use your FlightScope on Tuesday, you better remember to plug it in on Monday.

When you get it to the range, you need to set it up approximately ten feet behind the ball and connect it to your tablet, smartphone, or computer.  The newest VX app, which I used for this review, works very well and is much improved, but still isn’t idiot-proof.  First time users need to be prepared for a fair bit of trial and error .

Finally, if you want precise data, you need to calibrate the unit .  If you don’t, the data isn’t reliable which makes the whole thing a bit useless.  Calibration doesn’t take more than a couple minutes, but it is an added hassle.

Effectiveness

I’m going to keep this pretty short: I’ve spent hours on Trackman, hours on Foresight, and hours on different levels of FlightScopes.  They all produce consistent, accurate data .

FlightScope has made huge strides in the last few years with their user interface.  Their VX app, while not perfect, is very good and very customizable to the individual user .  Something as simple as being able to highlight the five most important data points is a big win for ease of use and effectiveness.

FlightScope is also the runaway winner at integrating other technologies .  I had the opportunity to test FlightScope with FocusBand and was amazed at how well their worked together.  I’ve also seen FlightScope paired with BodiTrak and was similarly impressed.

How regularly you use your FlightScope is going to be primarily related to your set up.  If you have an indoor studio where everything is perfectly calibrated and simply needs to be turned on, you’ll use FlightScope every day.  If every use requires you to charge your FlightScope, haul it out, set it up, and calibrate it, then your usage will probably be much less frequent.

The FlightScope Xi Tour retails for $9,000.  The other products that FlightScope offers are the the Xi+ and the X2 Elite, which retail for $5,000 and $12,000, respectively.

FlightScope Xi Tour_0105

Owning a launch monitor doesn’t make sense for every golfer, but for those that are committed to improvement, love the information, and, most importantly, can afford it, FlightScope is a fantastic choice.  With models to suit various price points and needs, and the ability to integrate other technology, they deserve their place among the technological elite.

Great summary, thanks. Where do I find a comparison of the top Launch Monitors on the market (2016)? User interface is most important in my opinion because if it’s fun/easy to use, you will use it all the time. Not having every single statistic isn’t a deal breaker. Usability is key. Please help.. Every company claims to be the best.

For ease of use, nothing tops Foresight’s GC2. Drop it, turn it on, and it displays the data right on screen.

Does the Flightscope by Mevo work with range balls or just regular golf balls?

Any ball will work.

It was really an amazing read on launch monitors. We all know that Golf Simulator is one of the most popular and favorite pastimes for passionate golfers when they are away from golf courses. but people face troubles to run their simulator because of the quality of launch monitors. As this electronic device that helps us to measure all of our data using a simulator, we must need the best one for sure otherwise there was no need of spending money on a simulator! Great selection! Your article really helped me to know more about simulators. Thanks for the information, it was very useful. I would like to be here again to find another masterpiece article.

Does the XI Tour radar track the ball until it lands on the ground or just for a certain distance in the air?

The Xi can work indoors off limited flight, but I believe it will track the full ball flight outdoors.

' src=

How much should I pay for second hand flight scope xi ? Thanks

I have no idea what the used market is like for the Xi.

' src=

Hey, Matt, I have an FS Xi-tour and am in the process of setting it up in my basement. I have a great hitting matt and 14×8 screen from Carl’s. Do you have a recommendation for using either a laptop or ipad, what to look for in a projector, and which software to go with? Thanks

Unfortunately that’s all beyond my expertise. I was very happy using the Xi Tour with an iPad, but the laptop might be even better.

' src=

Good morning Matt. I just purchased a xi elite… do you know if the software updates used on the newer mevo products is available for the xi elite for better performance? Like utilizing the camera for club face data?

Unfortunately, I don’t know.

Review: FlightScope Xi Tour Launch Monitor

flightscope xi tour battery

There are a couple options out when it comes to Launch Monitors.   FlightScope  has been my “go to” for few seasons now and with the current upgrade I see no reason to change.   FlightScope  offers full 3D Doppler radar tracking of the ball from tee to final resting place.  This means it is not guessing what the ball did, but tracked it the entire way.  It does also have the ability to test shots indoors or into nets.  It is best to use the foil dots so that it can track the ball better in such short distances.  While there is some guessing(math equations) involved the accuracy seems to be excellent based all the data I have collected indoors compared to outdoor testing.

flightscope xi tour battery

The data that the  FlightScope Xi Tour collects is equal to any launch monitor out there; actually more than most.  It can tell you more information than you would most likely be interested in.  It collects it all easily on a PC or iPad.  I exclusively use the iPad app to test clubs because it is the simplest and easiest way to hit balls at the range.  My laptop just doesn’t have the battery life or portability that my iPad does.  The connection is via WiFi and makes for a quick and easy set-up once I get to the range.  The set-up and use is very simple.  While this is a complex computer, you don’t need a whole lot of tech skill to figure it out.

Below is a list of the data that is collected and stored for each shot.

flightscope xi tour battery

For me the  FlightScope Xi Tour offered two big upgrades over the X2 that are worth it.  The first was the more compact size.  The X2 would get very cumbersome to drag out to the range with a full bag of clubs to test.  It was almost like carrying two golf bags.  The Xi Tour actually fits in the large side pocket of my golf bag.  This is big deal because it makes it really easy and convenient to test clubs.

The other big improvement that I noticed was the accuracy of tracking my golf ball.   When I would take the X2 to a crowded range, I would pick up my “neighbor’s” golf shots from time to time.  The Xi Tour is able to focus better on just gathering the data on my shots.  It can block out the other flying objects around me.

flightscope xi tour battery

One of the keys to fitting is the exact details and charts to tell the golfer what the ball is doing.  While every swing is different, the results should be as good as possible.  Even high handicap golfers can get fit based off a  FlightScope Xi Tour launch monitor .  Their results might be less consistent than a low handicap golfers, but there are still certain clubs that have more ideal numbers, smaller circles and overall better results.  While some of those things can be done with just the naked eye, it is faster, easier and charted by  FlightScope  to make it simple and clear which clubs work better.  It is also data driven, not based on opinions or guesses.

flightscope xi tour battery

Another options for using the  Flightscope Xi Tour launch monitor is for teaching.  The club data that can be seen in the above slides helps show why the ball does what it does based on club path, angle of attach and face angle at impact.  All those things can be shown in 3d.  A good teacher that knows how to use this data and change their students swing to get better results can certainly make great use of a  FlightScope .  Not only are they telling students what is happening, they can show them.  Even the teacher can learn a thing or two from seeing the tiny angles that the  FlightScope  can track in the club head.  For many of the other Launch Monitors our there, this is an add-on feature usually driving the price even higher.  It is included as part of the standard  FlightScope Xi Tour model.

Another feature that will serve the student well is  FlightScope  Skills.  It sets up what they call a combine where you can test your ability to hit targets in a timed fashion.  Can you hit a 20 yard pitch 5 times in a row, or what about a 30 yard wide target at 165 yards, or can you stripe a drive 5 times in a row over 225 yards?  Since golf is a precision game, these skills tests or training sessions are very valuable for improving your course management.  Golf instructors could make great use of this with their students.

flightscope xi tour battery

Launch Monitors are becoming a necessity among golf professionals.  If you are a fitter or a teacher, having a good launch monitor is simply part of the job in 2017.  I think  FlightScope  offers the best overall package at the best price.  If you look at comparable units that give the same data with the same ease and accuracy, you won’t find a better unit than the Xi Tour Launch Monitor.  Yes the price isn’t necessarily an option for most golfers, but if you go to a teacher or fitter, you want them to have the best tools to get the job done and the upgrades found in  FlightScope Xi Tour will make fittings even better.

FlightScope Introduces Xi Tour Launch Monitor

FlightScope®, a world leader in the development and manufacturing of 3D Doppler tracking radars and launch monitors for golf and other sports, today announces the availability of its Xi Tour model. The Xi Tour is the most lightweight, portable, accurate and affordable 3D Doppler tracking radar available today. This new addition to FlightScope’s suite of launch monitors now includes the cutting-edge technology and data parameters only previously available in professional models.

“Our team is very excited to finally reveal the Xi Tour to the golf community,” said Henri Johnson, Inventor and CEO of FlightScope. “This new tour caliber model makes the same training technology as the pros more accessible for golfers of all skill levels. We also believe this will be a revolutionary tool for teachers, giving them the ability to assess and train their students with added convenience.”

All 27 data parameters are displayed while training with the Xi Tour, giving users unmatched detailed analysis of their ball flight and swing. Some of the advanced analytics now available with the new model include club path, face to path, face to target, dynamic loft, vertical decent angle, vertical swing plane, horizontal swing plane, apex height, and flight time.

“I began using the Xi Tour late last year when I began working with a new instructor. He relies heavily on numbers and analytics to perfect my swing, so having the Xi Tour when I am not face to face with him allows me to work on the changes he wants me to make to my swing,” said Matt Every, PGA Tour Player and winner of the 2015 Arnold Palmer Invitational. “I use the device every day and couldn’t have made the progress I have made without the Xi Tour.”

All of the data recorded by the Xi Tour can be viewed real time on FlightScope’s VX2 or FlightScope Skills apps, and then uploaded to My  FlightScope.com . This is the first model in the Xi series that is compatible with the VX2 app, which allows players to review video of their swing for instant analysis. Players can also integrate the device with the wireless BodiTrak pressure mat for further analysis.

To find out more about FlightScope or the new Xi Tour visit,  FlightScope.com .

GC2-T - Asking $2750 which includes shipping to the lower 48 and PayPal Fees.

Includes all the cables, extra flash, FR1 range software with 1 course, built in metal shank tank.  This until will accurately capture all the ball data and doesn't require too much space to use, if you have room to swing a club this should work with your space.  It works excellent but the off button doesn't work.  You will either have to unplug from the power source to turn off or I used an Alexa smart plug and voice controls to turn it on and off.  This emits a Bluetooth signal so you can use third party simulation titles like GS Pro or TGC.  Because this GC2-T doesn't have an internal battery it must be connected to a power source.  It also doesn't have an LCD display and must be connected to a tablet or PC with sim software.  The included FR1 software can run a a very basic PC and doesn't require a dedicated GPU.  If you search YouTube for GC2-T there are a number of videos showing the unit in action.

Flightscope Xi-Tour - Asking $3500 which includes shipping to the lower 48 and PayPal Fees.

This sale includes the power cable, metallic dots for indoor spin capture, and a generic carrying bag.  This is the tour model that gives you all the ball and club data and full shot tracking when used outdoors.  The Flightscope golf apps are free to download for Android and Apple.  You can upload your sessions for free to myflightscope.com for review and to track progress.  This will receive free OTA firmware updates without any annual support plan.  The until works great and the battery will last for a few hours.

I used both of these for personal use in my indoor simulator.  The GC2 was used to capture the most accurate ball data and interface with the simulator software that projected to an impact screen and the Xi Tour was used to capture club data displayed on a tablet.  Outdoors I used the Xi Tour for full flight tracking and ball and club data.

In my opinion if you are looking for an indoor monitor the GC2 is the better option.  If you want full tracking of the golf ball outdoors and club data the Xi Tour is an excellent choice without breaking the bank.

Please let me know if there are any questions I can answer.
