Lakeland, Florida, has a lot going for it. As the largest city in Polk County, it boasts the largest on-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, one of the top-ten art museums in central Florida, great shopping, excellent eateries, amazing weather … it’s no wonder so many people choose to call this area home.

“We know and love our Lakeland community,” says Cristine Royer, Director of Marketing and Sales at The Estates at Carpenters , a Life Plan Community in Lakeland, FL, that offers Lifecare. “However, there is so much more to Central Florida than just our community and city. Lakeland is situated in a prime spot to head off on a variety of day trips to different areas of our state. Within two hours, you can be in a place that offers a completely different feel from what you’ve come to expect in this area.”

Cristine says that summertime is the perfect time to get out, hop in a car and head to the many different pleasures that Central Florida has to offer.

“There’s a little bit of something for everyone, from art enthusiasts to beach lovers to naturalists and antiquers and more,” she says.

We’ve put together a list of six easily drivable day trips from Lakeland to some favorite sites in Central Florida, including approximately how long it will take to drive to each one and some of the one-of-a-kind, only-found-in-Florida reasons to head there.

Daytona Beach (2 hours and 30 minutes)

Most people know Daytona Beach as the site of the Daytona 500 NASCAR race every February. While visiting Daytona International Speedway is always an option, there are plenty of other fun and exciting ways to fill your day in this harbor town.

• Spend an afternoon walking along the beach on the 750-foot-long Daytona Beach Pier and Boardwalk – don’t forget to bring your fishing pole, because fishing from the pier is free.
• Climb the 203 steps of the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse , the tallest working lighthouse in Florida, while also looking for Florida wildlife in Ponce Inlet.
• If you’re tired of the beach scene, head a few steps away to the Joyland Amusement Center, where you can ride go karts, hop aboard a roller coaster or try your hand at the old-school arcade area.
• If you’re in town on a Saturday Night between May 29 and September 11, grab a beach chair and enjoy free, live music at the Bandshell Summer Concert Series . This summer’s lineup features tribute bands honoring the music of Billy Joel, the Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, Fleetwood Mac and many more. Be sure to stay after the concert for the fireworks show from the pier.

Homosassa (1 hour and 45 minutes)

This town, located on the Gulf Coast, is a paradise for nature and water sports enthusiasts alike. It’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon snorkeling alongside manatees, watching spider monkeys and alligators in their natural habitats (from a safe distance, of course) and catching a glimpse of Florida’s most endangered species.

• The Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is a must-see for those who want to walk on the wild side. Hike along the trails and revel in the beauty of the crystal clear springs. The park features a variety of captive animals such as alligators, black bears, red wolf, Key deer, flamingos, whooping cranes and the oldest hippopotamus in captivity.
• For a bit of history, head to the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park , where you’ll find the remains of a 5,100-acre sugar plantation and a steam-driven mill that operated from 1851–1864 and supplied sugar products for southern troops during the Civil War. Besides the ruins, the site offers a picnic pavilion, restrooms, tables for picnicking, and grills.

DeLand (1 hour and 50 minutes)

Nicknamed “The Athens of Florida,” DeLand is a step back in time to the glamour and drama of Old Florida. It’s home to the state’s oldest college and is known for its gorgeous architecture and opportunities for nature adventures.

• Lovers of historic homes will want to put a tour of the Stetson Mansion at the top of their list. It’s Florida’s most historic home, only Gilded Age mansion and the largest, grandest, most innovative home ever built in the state before 1900.
• If being outside is your thing, head to De Leon Springs State Park , where you can spend the day boating, camping, scuba diving, picnicking, hiking … whatever it is that floats your boat (literally or figuratively), you’ll find it there.
• Walking through the campus of Stetson University is a great way to end your day. You’ll learn about its history and take in the views of the stately red-brick buildings, Greco-Roman columns and gorgeous oaks.

Tarpon Springs (1 hour and 45 minutes)

This cute coastal community is known as the “Sponge Capital of the World” and remains the largest producer of natural sponges in the world today. It’s also home to the highest percentage of Greek Americans in the country – descendants of the sponge divers who settled here in the early 1900s.

• Be sure to sample some authentic Greek cuisine at one of the many eateries and bakeries that line the waterfront on Dodecanese Boulevard. Don’t forget to memorialize your trip by purchasing an authentic sea sponge at the Sponge Docks .
• A little further off the beaten path is Brooker Creek Preserve, a beautiful, quiet nature oasis where you can hike, birdwatch, wildlife watch, and simply enjoy some peace and quiet from the hustle and bustle of the sponge docks.
• If you’re interested in learning more about the culture and history of the area, visit the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts and Cultural Centers or the Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral , or take a drive through the historic district to see 145 historic homes.

Mount Dora (1 hour and 30 minutes)

Besides being known as the “Bass Capital of the World,” this small and charming town is the perfect designation for antique enthusiasts.

• Shop for trinkets and treasures in Mount Dora’s downtown area, where you’ll find antique shops as well as outdoor cafes, gourmet restaurants, galleries, wineries and bed and breakfasts.
• If fishing is on your itinerary (and it should be), check these canals off of Lake Dora, Beauclair and Carlton to hook a trophy of a different kind.

Lake Wales (1 hour)

Lake Wales’ city motto is: “Not out of the way, just out of the ordinary.” That certainly describes this town that’s a blend of Florida old and new.

• Be sure to visit Bok Tower Gardens with its Singing Tower, bird sanctuary, and Pinewood Estate as well as see the 250-acre contemplative garden. The gardens are a frequent site of outdoor concerts, so check and see what is going on during your stay.
• The Lake Wales Art Center , founded by famed City Planner Frederick Law Olmstead, Jr. in 1927, features art exhibits, concerts and educational series.

1. Hike along the trails at Circle B Bar Reserve

First and foremost, one of the top things to do in Lakeland, Florida would be to get yourself over to the Circle B Bar Reserve. Spread across 5.13 square kilometres, this former ranch is now a beautiful slice of nature to get lost in. In case you were wondering about the name, it gets this from the cattle ranch.

Strolling alongside the lake is one of the most chilled, outdoorsy things to do in Lakeland, Florida. The Loggia on the eastern side of the lake  was designed and constructed in the 1920s. Today, with its neo-classical aesthetics, makes it feel as though you could be walking around somewhere in Europe.

Downtown is the best place to stay in Lakeland, Florida – for sure. This part of town the most historic with a whole lot of heritage architecture. There are also attractions such as museums and other old buildings where you can learn about the history of the city.

3. Spend some time soaking up the art in the Polk Museum Of Art

Named for the county in which Lakeland is set (Polk County, obviously), the Polk Museum of Art is set in a suitably architecturally interesting building that’s flanked by palm trees. Opening in 1966, the museum has displays of everything from Pre-Columbian art, all the way to contemporary pieces – Asian, African, European, Modern. You name it.

Though there are various exhibitions on throughout the year, the museum boasts a permanent collection of over 2,500 pieces. A great, artsy thing to do in Lakeland, Florida, the Polk Museum of Art aims to bring the city’s communities together with each exhibition. This local gem is also great for budget travellers since it’s free admission, too.

4. Go nature spotting at Lower Green Swamp Preserve

If you’re a fan of nature and you’re looking for something outdoorsy to do in Lakeland, Florida, then get yourself over to the Lower Green Swamp Preserve. Another former portion of cattle ranch and farmland that has been turned into a nature preserve, the land here has been ‘restored’ to what it would have been like prior to being settled and used for agriculture.

There’s a whole lot of well marked trails here (including an easy loop trail), some leading over bridges across picturesque streams, meaning it is easy to explore the tranquil natural setting here. It’s also a popular spot for horse riding. Even if you don’t feel like hiking, it’s a chilled spot to simply take a breather and watch the wildlife go by.

5. See the amazing Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center

Frank Lloyd Wright (1867 – 1959) was a famous American architect who contributed greatly to the cityscapes of many of the United States’ urban centres. Interestingly, it’s the campus of Florida Southern College (located in Lakeland) that actually boasts the largest collection in the world of Wright’s architecture, with a total of 13 buildings built between 1938 and 1959.

Visiting the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center, then, has got to be one of the best, off the beaten track things to do in Lakeland, Florida. Many of the buildings on campus are intact and still in use today. Popping along to the visitor centre means you’ll get to learn more about his life and work, and even get to go on a wee tour of his buildings, too.

6. Learn about the local history at The Polk County History Center

There’s a surprising amount of art and culture to soak up in Lakeland. There is also a whole lot of history to learn about in this Floridan city, too. And you can learn all about it at The Polk County History Center, which is itself located inside a historic 1908 courthouse, with all its neo-classical grandeur.

Inside this impressive building, you can discover the local history and heritage of the area. Learn all about the people, the places, and the events that have changed Polk County over the years (even extending back to the Paleo-Indians over 1,500 years ago). There is also the building itself: think exploring the historic courtrooms, marvelling at the high, vaulted ceilings, and checking out the original judge’s bench.

8. Pay a visit to the Florida Air Museum

The Florida Air Museum has all sorts of interesting displays of aviation history. Established in 1986, the Florida Air Museum is – fittingly enough – located in the main building of a hangar annex at the Lakeland Linder International Airport. There’s tons of old planes here. Want some detail? You can clap eyes on a Boeing-Stearman Model 75, an Aerosport Woody Pusher from the 1930s, and the Mignet Pou-du-Ciel or “Flying Flea.” Fun for anybody. As you might tell from the name, it’s by some water – Lake Ariana, to be exact – and it’s a place where locals come to grill, hang out with their friends and families, and enjoy the beauty of the lake.

In the summer it’s busy with people paddling, launching boats, and having big family get-togethers (complete with grill, of course). In the colder months, it’s still a chill place to come, feed the birds, go fishing, watch the sunset over the lake – whatever you feel like doing. Safety in Lakeland

Lakeland, Florida is a pretty safe city to visit. The state of Florida may be known for its gun ownership, and other, more “unsafe” cities like Miami, but relatively small Lakeland shouldn’t pose much of a risk to any visitor.

It also pays to be sensible in Lakeland. Though it’s comparatively safe, there are still things about any urban centre in the United States that mean you shouldn’t let your guard down. Break-ins to rental cars means you should park in well lit, secure areas, for example.

And even though it has a charming, small city feel about it, there are – of course – some levels of crime. There is also a noticeable homeless community, but this isn’t something that will threaten your safety. Especially in the renovated historic Downtown area, you won’t come into contact with any crime at all. It’s quite laid back and people are friendly.

Common sense still applies: walking around at night by yourself in poorly lit and/or deserted areas is something that will put you at risk anywhere in the world – not just Lakeland. 10. Go and grab some food at Munn Park

One of the best things about Munn Park are its Food Truck Rallies; there’s one of these on the second Thursday of each month. There’s also First Fridays, which is a free music event complete with live music and DJs. Obviously, during Christmas time the whole park is lit up and decorated for the festive season. 11. Go old school & watch a movie at the Silver Moon Drive-In Theatre

The Silver Moon Drive-In Theatre is, amazingly, the last drive-in not just in Lakeland, but in the whole of Polk County. It’s been going for years. Opened in 1948, this testament to the country’s obsession with cars and movies (so why not put ’em together?) is still a place where you can, as the name suggests, drive in, grab some food and catch a movie.

One of the coolest things to do in Lakeland, Florida, coming to this place should definitely be top on your to-do list when you’re here. Who cares what picture you see? It’s cool enough to come here just to soak up the retro Americana of it all. Fun fact: for the sound, don’t expect Dolby surround speakers – you just tune your radio in to the right channel and there you go, it’s the movie you’re watching!

12. See a show at the historic Polk Theatre

The historic 1,400 seat Polk Theatre was built in 1928, during a period in which city experienced a boom in local business. Located in Downtown Lakeland, this old Vaudeville theatre has an iconic marquee sign outside (ripe for Instagram fodder), but it’s inside that you’ll actually feel the atmosphere of this place.

Designed by an Italian born architect called J. E. Casale in such a way that it mimics (sort of) a Mediterranean village, this pretty theatre is definitely one of the most romantic things to do in Lakeland, Florida. The ceiling is supposed to look like the night sky; there are faux balconies; a tiled staircase; intricate cornices; a mezzanine floor. Fun fact: Elvis Presley performed here in 1956!

13. Go for a picnic at Lake Morton

Another lake now, because, you know, it is Lakeland after all, Lake Morton is one of the most picturesque of the bunch. It also happens to be home to a large swan population, donated by none other than Queen Elizabeth II (yes, of UK fame) in 1957. Aside from its royal claim to fame, yes: it’s very pretty and there’s more birdlife here than just swans, too.

But one of the most romantic things to do in Lakeland, Florida is finding a spot under Lover’s Oak, located along the shores of Lake Morton itself. Sitting on one of the benches here you and your partner can gaze at the lake, try and spot some of the swans, and feed the birds – there are bird feed dispensers dotted around the lake.

14. Stop to smell the flowers at Hollis Gardens

If you’re on a budget and you’re looking for one of the top free things to do in Lakeland, don’t you worry: you can simply make a beeline to Hollis Gardens and unwind amongst nature. The manicured botanic garden, with over 10,000 flowers, is located near Lake Mirror in Downtown Lakeland.

You’ll also find stunning fountains here, as well as neo-classical architecture, the whole place dotted with statues and crisscrossed by pathways. At Hollis Gardens you can walk through the Rose Garden and listen to the music being played out, wander the Butterfly Trail and descend the Grand Staircase, complete with views of the lake. 15. Pay a visit to the Punk Rock Flea Market at Swan Brewing

Going to Swan Brewing, which makes beer, obviously, is a pretty cool thing to do in Lakeland, Florida by itself. But these purveyors of beer also happen to put on a pretty cool flea market. Yes, it’s not just any old flea market, but the Punk Rock Flea Market; known more for its lakes and swans than punk, it’s a pretty fun thing to do in Lakeland.

And what exactly is a Punk Rock Flea Market, you wonder? Well, here is where you will find a whole lot of memorabilia from the classic days of punk rock. We’re talking original artwork, pins, music in cassette, vinyl and CD form, clothing, merchandise – complete with food and drink from Swan Brewing. It’s free and it’s held every Sunday. Even if it’s not a Sunday, you should still visit the brewery!

16. Have some fun at the Explorations V Children’s Museum

Explorations V Children’s Museum is an engaging children’s museum (obviously) that will keep children entertained. Why V? Well, it’s not “vee” – it’s 5 in Roman numerals, which represents the five senses. That’s a fitting name because the museum provides children (from toddlers through to 12 years of age) with hands-on opportunities to learn about the world around them.

Easily one of the best things to do in Lakeland, Florida with kids, here you and your little ones will find fun spaces like the News Station – where children can pretend to do some broadcasting; the Explore Store, where your kids can try their hand at running a business; and the Sound Studio, where they can play with all things audio; and tons more. It’s bound to be a lot of fun.

17.  Let off some steam at the Barnett Family Park

The city park is where it’s at, not only because it’s free, but also because it’s got a watery element, which makes it one of the best things to do in Lakeland, Florida in summer. The splash park at Barnett Family Park has got to be the number one draw to this place, but then again, the huge sandpit here also helps make this place a hit with little ones.

There’s also a spinning jungle gym and musical poles that kids can bash to make music. It’s kept clean and well maintained, making it a family-friendly place. There is also plenty of space for you and your family to picnic, so it’s easy to make a day of it here. If you’ve got younger children with you, don’t worry: there’s a gated park for little ones, too.

Though there are a surprising amount of cool things to do in Lakeland, Florida, it would be a shame to visit this place and not venture further out. In all honesty, it’s a fairly compact town, so if you’re here for any longer than a few days, you’ll want to see what there is in the surrounding area. Spoiler alert: there’s plenty – as you’ll find out from these two awesome day trips from Lakeland, Florida we’re sharing.

Spend a day of fun at Legoland Florida Resort

Legoland Florida Resort is a mere 30 to 40 minute drive from Lakeland. Obviously, coming to Legoland means that you and your family will get to spend the day at a super fun Lego-themed amusement park that will have keen Lego fans especially freaking out. But it isn’t just about Lego: there are over 50 rides and attractions here, complete with a water park, too, that make it a place everyone is going to love.

Aimed mainly at children aged between 2 to 12 years of age, Legoland has a lot of age-appropriate fun going on. In fact, there’s so much to do, you may need to consult a Legoland guide before you go. There’s adrenaline pumping stuff like the Lego Technic Test Track, but also gentler rides for toddlers too – like the Grand Carousel. If they don’t like rides, you can enjoy the Cypress Gardens (complete with giant cypress tree), or simply build some Lego at one of the dedicated stations.

Have a day by the sea at Clearwater Beach

Just over an hour by car from Lakeland (past neighbouring Tampa) Clearwater Beach is a soft, sandy beach – on the Gulf of Mexico, not a lake – and is a popular spot all year round. Stretching for 4 kilometres or 2.5 miles, Clearwater Beach is actually set on a barrier island (connected by a bridge, don’t worry) and has all the amenities that you could ever need for a beach day trip from Lakeland, Florida.

Clearwater Beach has actually in the past been ranked up there as one of the best beaches in the United States; not only is it pretty and full with plenty of amenities, shops and restaurants, but you can also spot dolphins in the Gulf waters, go for boat trips on replica Spanish galleons, or ride the along the coast on the Clearwater Jolly Trolley. Anybody looking for a day of sun, sea and sand should head here!

But we’ve got you covered with this 3 day Lakeland itinerary to help make sure you get the best out of your time here…

Day 1 – A Classic Day in Lakeland, Florida

Your first day in Lakeland, Florida should start the right way: and that’s with breakfast. For the purposes of good food in the morning, head to Divicious Deli & Coffee Shop (open from 7am); grab yourself something tasty for breakfast. Then it’s a 12 minute drive to the Circle B Bar Reserve – which opens its doors at 6am – for a scenic morning stroll. A good place to spot wildlife any time of year. A must.

After (maybe) spotting some alligators at the reserve, it’s drive 15 minutes to another part of town and, specifically, the  Polk County History Center . Indulge yourself in some history and culture at the museum; it’s well worth your time, not just because of the surprising amount of history on offer here, but also because of the historic neo-classical building the museum is actually located in, too.

Get something to eat at the family-run Mexican restauran t Hacienda Mexico , which is located just opposite the museum. After the museum it’s time to head to the awesome Silver Moon Drive-In Theatre . Make sure to check out what they’re screening that night. Tip: the later you go, the more space there is (that said, they also have two screens). There’s a diner here for snacks and drinks, too.

Day 2 – A Day of Culture in Lakeland, Florida

Day two in Lakeland, Florida begins, again, with breakfast. We recommend making a beeline to the Reececliff Family Diner – a local institution with Southern-influenced food on offer. After you’re suitably full, head for a stroll around the edge of Lake Morton which will eventually lead you – after 15 minutes of walking – to the  Polk Museum of Art (open from 10 in the morning; free to enter).

After soaking up all that art, it’s a 10 minute walk or so to the beautiful Hollis Gardens. There are countless flowers, plants and trees here to admire in this manicured gardens. If you’re feeling hungry, you’ll get the chance to sit in the outdoor, garden setting if you choose to eat at Garden Bistro, with a selection of different food on offer. Another 10-minute stroll takes you to Florida Southern College .

Whilst the campus here has a load of cool architecture to see, it’s worth heading to the  Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center  to get a better understanding about it – and maybe even a tour. Once you’re sufficiently architectured out, it’s a 15 minute walk to Polk Theatre  for amazing evening entertainment in this 1920s, Mediterranean style theatre. You can get late dinner and drinks nearby.

Day 3 – A Local Day in Lakeland, Florida

Do as the locals do in Lakeland, Florida and start your day with an easy stroll to Lake Mirror in the Downtown area. But not before hitting up Downtown Diner for breakfast fare and a morning caffeine fix. Walk along the  Francis Langford Promenade  as you gaze on the glassy surface of the lake, snap pictures of the picturesque setting, and spot the statues and fountains throughout the park itself.

Then it’s time for you to do a spot of antique hunting at Wildwood Antique Mall. A 9-minute drive away from Lake Mirror, and open from 10am, here is the place to snap up all manner of oddities, cool antiques, vintage collectables, and a whole load of other retro antiques. After you’ve browsed enough old stuff and (probably) purchased something for yourself, jump in the car and head Downtown.

A 9-minute drive leads you to Swan Brewing . It’s good enough to visit by itself (it’s beer tasting, duh), and in the afternoon food trucks start to arrive. If you’re here on a Sunday, even better: that’s when the Punk Rock Flea Market is going on here. For local evening events, head to Munn Park, a 5-minute stroll away. Later, Molly McHugh’s , a low-key Irish pub nearby, will be your nightspot til 2am.

THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN THE FLORIDA KEYS

The Florida Keys are a string of coral cays that stretch from the mainland south of Miami all the way through Key West to the Dry Tortugas. Most of these cays don’t have sand beaches, but shores of coral rock.

The Keys are not only different geologically from the rest of the state, the people have a culture that is unique and reflects a turbulent history. The Keys were isolated from one another and only accessible by water until 1912. In that year, the extension of Henry Flagler’s railroad all the way to Key West connected the cays for the first time.

Early settlers of The Keys were called “conchs” (conks) because of the main staple of the sea. Many of these early settlers were Loyalists who came from the Bahamas, descendants of those who fled the United States after the Revolutionary War.

In 1982 the people of Key West had a disagreement with the U.S. government, declared their independence, and briefly became the “Conch Republic”. Though only a stunt, it brought a lot of publicity to The Keys and cemented its reputation as home to a bunch of independent people.

The image still sticks today. The Keys are for people who love boating, fishing, and the unusual.

NATIONAL, STATE, AND LOCAL PARKS

Florida Parks are treasured natural resources. The Old Florida that is rapidly disappearing from the state is being preserved in local, state, and national parks.

It is because of these parks that some parts of natural Florida are still alive and well despite the proliferation of condos, theme parks, subdivisions and shopping malls that have obliterated much of the Florida landscape in the past half century or so.

Many Florida state parks have camping sites carved out of the surrounding pine woods and palmettos.  The campsites are separated from each other by this natural vegetation. The privacy is much greater than in the average private campground. Each campsite usually has an electric outlet, a water faucet, a charcoal grill and a fire ring for campfires.

Florida Parks preserve natural resources and protect them from the constant development of the state.  Parks are great for camping, hiking, observing nature, or just relaxing.  Here are a few we like.

RAILROADS, AIRPLANES, ROCKETS AND SPACE AGE

Florida's modern history began first with the railroads, then airplanes, and finally rockets. After the U.S. Civil War, water routes were the main form of transportation in the state.

Railroads made the development of Florida possible by increasing export routes for its agricultural products, and ways for tourists to come down from the north.

During World Wars I and II, aviation became a large part of Florida history. The mild climate resulted in hundreds of army air force bases being built for training pilots. The modern space program began in Florida at Cape Canaveral with the launch of Bumper 8 In 1950.

Federal, state, and local governments along with private individuals have done a great job preserving the memories and artifacts of these eras.

NATURE CENTERS AND SCIENCE MUSEUMS  

The rapid development of Florida has been a double edged sword. On the negative side, this growth has too often been rampant and careless and done a lot of environmental damage. Native habitat has been lost forever and what remains continues to be erased or damaged by development.

On a more positive note, the financial resources generated by this growth have provided the funds for government and private organizations to buy sensitive lands and put them into preservation forever.

These preserves, along with nature centers and science museums, continue to educate the public about environmental issues and help them become good stewards of the land.

Nature centers, science museums, and environmentally sensitive land preserves are managed by state and local governments - as well as some private parties.  Here are a few of them.

CULTURE AND HISTORY OF SEMINOLE INDIANS

There were at least 12 Native American tribes who lived in Florida before the Spanish arrived in the 1500s.  They were all gone within 200 years, either dying of European diseases or enslaved in the Caribbean.

The Seminoles emerged in the 1700s from a combination of various Native American tribes who settled in Florida. The dominant tribe was the northern Muscogee Creeks from Georgia and Alabama.

The word “Seminole” is derived from a Creek word or may be a corruption of the Spanish word “cimarron” which means runaway or wild one. The Seminoles intermarried with free blacks and escaped slaves, hence the runaway designation.

Most Seminoles were relocated by 1842 to reservations west of the Mississippi River. The remaining population fought three wars against the United States. The few hundred who never surrendered moved to the Everglades.

In the twentieth century, the Miccosukee separated from the Seminoles and became a recognized tribe.

FLORIDA ZOOS  

Even if you go exploring in the Florida wilderness, you are not likely to see a lot of wild animals. That’s because they are masters at hiding from danger and they often see humans as dangerous.

They spend most of their time looking for something to eat and drink. Hiding from other animals is hard wired into their genetic code. In Florida zoos, a lot of their biological needs are taken care of and the animals can relax.

This lets you observe them in more detail.

Some people believe zoos are cruel because they imprison wild animals. There are many others who believe zoos give an opportunity for millions of people to see, enjoy, and appreciate wild animals.

They feel in the long run that this exposure helps animal species survive because of human’s love and understanding of them.

Most zoos have the mission of  helping animal species survive by helping people love and understand them. Here are a few good zoos.

12 Fun Things to do in Lakeland, Florida

Lakeland, Florida, is located east of Tampa and is the largest city in Polk County. It’s named for the 38 gorgeous lakes in the area that is full of natural beauty. Whether you’re a local or visiting from out of town, there are plenty of fun things to do in Lakeland to keep you entertained.

Similar to Dunedin, Florida , Lakeland is another Florida gem that I feel doesn’t quite get the hype that it deserves. It’s easily one of my favorite day trips from Tampa , but you can also make it a weekend trip ;). Fun Things to do in Lakeland

Lake mirror park.

If you’re looking for a fun and tranquil spot to spend the day, then Lake Mirror should definitely be on your list of things to do in Lakeland. Located right in the heart of downtown, this beautiful park is home to a large lake, walking trails, and a variety of recreational activities. The park is also home to several historic buildings, including the Lakeland Public Library and the Polk Museum of Art.

The centerpiece of the park is the lake itself, which makes for a peaceful stroll along its shoreline. Take in the sights of the water and make sure to look out for any birds or other wildlife that might be passing through. You’ll also find plenty of open grassy areas perfect for enjoying a picnic.

Hollis Garden is located along the Frances Langford Promenade at Lake Mirror. You can find more than 10,000 flowers and shrubs, shade trees, and a beautiful grand staircase at this stunning Tampa Bay botanical garden .

Lake Hollingsworth

This 350-acre lake is located southeast of downtown Lakeland and offers several walking and biking trails. In addition, Lake Hollingsworth is home to many species of wildlife and plants, making it a great place to relax and observe nature. You’ll have the opportunity to spot local wildlife such as osprey, egrets, and more.

The area is also great for picnicking and adventuring. You can either bring your own kayak or paddle board or rent from a local company.

Go ax throwing

Have fun at Polk County’s largest and first ax throwing, virtual gun range, and restaurant. Ax-Caliber should be at the top of your list for the most fun things to do in Lakeland!

I was actually pretty nervous I was going to embarrass myself, and okay maybe I did a little bit initially. But once I got the hang of it (thanks to our amazing instructor Caleb), I was sticking it near the bullseye almost every time!

Ax-Caliber offers several different packages so you can choose the perfect one for your group. Prices start at just $25 per person and include an hour of ax throwing with an instructor who will give you tips and teach you the proper safety techniques.

This fun activity is great for group gatherings, corporate events, birthday parties, or even just a date night. Not only do you get to let loose with an axe, but you can also enjoy delicious food from their full menu and grab a drink from the bar.

They also offer a “Glow n Throw” where you get to throw neon-taped wrapped axes at neon-painted targets in blacklight-filled rooms!

The Yard on Mass

The Yard on Mass is an outdoor experience that recreates a backyard party with daily food trucks, beer on tap, wine, and craft cocktails.  Food truck options rotate weekly and The Yard on Mass hosts different events and live shows for visitors to enjoy. This family-friendly venue is great for everyone!

The main area of The Yard on Mass offers games, live music, and art installations. Visitors can take part in a variety of activities such as cornhole, shuffleboard, table tennis, giant Jenga, and more. For those looking for a more relaxed experience, the yard also features outdoor seating areas where guests can relax and take in the scenery.

Experience some amazing Lakeland restaurants

It doesn’t matter if you’re visiting around breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Lakeland has delicious options for any time of the day. A few of my favorite restaurants in Lakeland include Good Thyme (get their chicken biscuit for breakfast), Nineteen61 for lunch or dinner, and Cob and Pen for lunch or dinner. Oh, and for the indecisive, The Joinery is a great spot! It’s a food hall similar to Sparkman Wharf and Armature Works.

Lakeland, Florida offers several bars for the over twenty-one crowd. Several of these bars are scattered around the downtown area and are easy to hop between. If you’re looking for a fun night out on the town, you can’t go wrong with these favorites in Lakeland:

• Rec Room — This arcade is actually family-friendly until 9 PM when it turns 21+. Locals love this bar for its fun games like Guitar Hero, vintage arcades, and skeeball, as well as their fun and creative drinks. If you know me, you know this is exactly the type of bar I look for when I’m going out! It’s definitely a great bar if you’re looking to add some extra fun to your night.
• Revival Bar — This trendy cocktail bar is full of drink options. From an entire page dedicated to Old Fashioneds to plenty of seasonal offerings.  Revival Bar also has a great happy hour with specials ranging from $4 wines to $7 cocktail favorites. The craft cocktail experience and atmosphere are something you aren’t going to want to miss.
• Federal Bar — This bar offers a beautiful exterior with a warehouse vibe in the interior. It had a very lively environment the Saturday we just so happened to enter. Upon opening the door the entire bar was singing along to Sweet Caroline at the top of their lungs and having the best time!
• Lakeland Loft — A glamorous bar that features live jazz every Friday and Saturday. Guests here can enjoy cigars and cocktails in a relaxed environment.

Go brewery hopping

Of course, you gotta check out some local brews while you’re in the area! At Brew Hub in Lakeland, you’ll find a craft beer brewing and packaging facility.  There is a tasting room on-site where you can find beer on draft with wine, canned cocktails, hard seltzer, and cider. Guests can often find food trucks on-site if they’re hungry.

At the main location in downtown Lakeland, Swan Craft Brewing and Taproom hosts live events and food trucks for guests enjoying their drinks at the Taproom. There are 30 taps available, including 2 nitro lines.  At the Swan Brewing South location, there are 16 taps available.

Circle B Bar Reserve

Located just north of Lakeland, the Circle B Bar Reserve is a great place to enjoy nature and get away from it all. The reserve is a 1,267-acre protected wildlife area and part of the Lakeland Chain of Lakes. It has been designated as a protected sanctuary and has a wide variety of habitats and ecosystems.

The reserve features 12 miles of hiking trails, bird-watching opportunities, and a variety of wildlife including alligators, otters, and wading birds. It’s open daily from sunrise to sunset.

Visitors can also go kayaking on the lake, take a pontoon boat ride, or enjoy one of the several fishing spots around the lake. The Visitor Center offers guided walks and other educational programs throughout the year.

Silver Moon Drive-In Theater

If you’re looking for an old-fashioned movie experience, the Silver Moon Drive-In Theatre has been providing a unique cinematic experience for more than 70 years! It’s one of the few drive-in theaters in Tampa Bay ! With two screens usually showing first-run movies with double features seven nights a week, there’s always something new and exciting to watch.

To get the full drive-in experience, make sure to arrive an hour before showtime on Friday or Saturday, and 30 minutes before showtime during the week.

Tickets can be purchased at the box office, with prices set at $7 for ages 10 and up, $3 for ages 4-9, and free admission for those under 4 years old. There’s also a snack bar serving classic drive-in movie food like popcorn, candy, hot dogs, and more.

Polk Theater

If you’re looking for a fun evening activity while in Lakeland, consider seeing a show at the historic Polk Theater . Located in downtown Lakeland, the Polk Theatre has been a popular entertainment destination since the 1930s. It is a true art deco gem and its Spanish-Mediterranean design makes it a special part of Lakeland’s history.

The Polk Theatre offers an array of shows, ranging from classical music to stand-up comedy. Prices to see a show vary based on the event, but tickets typically range from $20 – $50 per person. Additionally, there are special discounts available for students, seniors, and military personnel.

There are also a variety of special events held at the theatre throughout the year, such as movie screenings and open mic nights. The Polk Theatre has also hosted a variety of famous acts such as Ray Charles and Johnny Cash. You never know who you might catch on stage at this classic venue!

Take Advantage of The Many Cute Photo Ops 

There are a bunch of great photo opportunities around Lakeland.  Whether you’re looking for a casual selfie or more staged photos, this town has what you’re looking for!

The Color Wall at Haus 820 is a great stop, as this multi-color mural makes for a great photo backdrop. The Yard on Mass is right next door to The Color Wall and is also a great stop for cute photo ops and a drink. Check out all of the fun Lakeland murals !

Check Out a Market 

Lakeland has several great outdoor markets and events where community members can shop at different vendors.  Between Lakeland First Friday and the Downtown Farmers Curb Market on Saturdays, Lakeland is busy on the weekends.

The Downtown Farmers Curb Market is open every Saturday. This market has everything all from produce, art, furniture, food, jewelry, plants, herbs, and more!

On the first Friday of every month, downtown Lakeland shuts down the streets for the First Friday events where locals and visitors come to enjoy car shows, a market with crafters and artisans, and over 60 exhibitors.  Each month has a different theme!

I had never even heard of Lakeland before! It sounds like a great place to explore for a day. I especially love the sound of Lake Hollingsworth. It would be fun to spend a day there relaxing, picnicing and paddleboarding.

The 38 named lakes circling the community provide scenic areas for recreation. Lakeland’s infrastructure and nature have even provided a backdrop for big-budget Hollywood movies like Edward Scissorhands and Adam Sandler’s The Waterboy!

The downtown area is known as “Lakeland’s living room” renowned for its brick architecture, antiquing, and craft breweries. Lakeland is also the corporate home of Publix, the most beloved grocery store chain among Southerners.

Hollis Garden

One of the most relaxing things to do in Lakeland is to pay a visit to Hollis Garden, a 1.2-acre lakefront botanical garden full of neoclassical architecture.

An intimate “secret garden” with plenty of secluded spots of shade and benches, Hollis Garden is adorned with intricate flower beds, public art, and decorative fountains. You can see over 10,000 flowers, trees, and ornamental shrubs here!

Lake Mirror Park

The Florida Air Museum has an extensive exhibit detailing the life of famous aviator Howard Hughes. Visitors can see his actual flight gear, awards, and personal memorabilia from his aviation and film career.

The Discovery Zone is an area designed for children that has many STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) games. There is also a dress-up station and photo booth so you can really feel like an aviator!

The Museum also has a variety of aircrafts on display like the SeaDart, the Vertical Riser, and the Tomcat. The curators hope to inspire the next generation of aviators and aerospace engineers with regular shows performed by the Blue Angels!

Polk Museum of Art

Of the places to go in Lakeland, the Polk Museum of Art is a perfect dissection of local art and culture. Located on the Florida Southern College campus, the Museum is non-profit and an affiliate of the Smithsonian and American Alliance of Museums.

There are over 2,500 works on display, including the photography and paintings of Ansel Adams, Marc Chagall, and Henri Matisse. Outdoor gardens feature statues and sculpture. A portion of the museum also displays the art of Florida Southern College students.

While the permanent displays feature the pre-Columbian era, traveling exhibits pass through the Polk Museum of Art. Past exhibits include Japanese prints and textiles, American folk art, and contemporary modern masterpieces.

Explorations V Children’s Museum

The “V” refers to each of the five senses with which young explorers will discover. Arts and sciences are learned and explored through the “power of play.” The interactive exhibits promote uninhibited creativity.

The Basement floor features an interactive orange grove. Children discover areas of the world through the life cycle of the orange tree. From picking, packing, and sorting through oranges, you and your family will learn about different areas of the world from Asia, Australia, Africa to the Americas.

The First Floor features more hands-on opportunities where children learn music appreciation, science, and history. An area named “The Tot Spot” is designed for toddlers, the youngest of explorers.

The Second Floor is all about art appreciation with a museum-style gallery full of art for children. One entire wall is a gigantic chalkboard on which little visitors can sketch and draw. A separate area features interactive science components and brain teasers in the “Dreamer’s Gallery.”

Historic Downtown Lakeland

Pick Berries at Shady Oak Farms

In the northwest corner of the city, locals congregate every year to cultivate their green thumbs. A trip to Shady Oak Farms is one of the best things to do in Lakeland.

Shady Oak Farms is a family-owned, 10-acre farm that grows five types of blueberries. All crops are herbicide and pesticide-free! Visitors can arrive with a basket to pick their own blueberries, making it an essential snacking stop on any Florida road trip .

The biggest and most plump berries are in season during April and May. You can even buy your own blueberry plant to grow your own berries at home! Take a picnic to enjoy by the pond when you’re done!

You can also dig your own ginger roots and pick your own raspberries. The farm also cultivates hard-to-grow flowers. Daffodil bulbs, ginseng, bloodroot, and goldenseal are available for purchase.

Circle B Bar Reserve

Contrary to how its name sounds, the Circle B Bar is not a brewery, but a gorgeous wildlife reserve spanning over 1,267 acres, one of the most fun things to do in Lakeland for birders and nature lovers alike.

Formerly a cattle ranch, today, the Circle B Bar Reserve is made up of different ecosystems, hosting an array of flora and fauna! Park-goers can almost always see alligators in Lake Hancock, while sandhill cranes, great blue herons, and even eagles soar by.

Underneath and extending past a living oak canopy is a sprawling bed of wildflowers, which play a huge part in the reserve’s ecosystem. Scrub mint Conradinas and Garberias light up the fields with their beautiful colors.

Experienced hikers can take the Eagle Roost Trail to spy on meadowlarks and quail. If you brave the Marsh Rabbit Run Trail, you can occasionally see families of otters and turtles sunbathing on fallen logs.

Polk Theatre

A former vaudeville movie palace built in the Golden Age, the Polk Theatre has 1,400 seats. The beautifully constructed interior is reminiscent of a Mediterranean courtyard, complete with stars glittering in the ceiling.

The Polk Theatre is a historical landmark, supported by revenue from its Performing Arts series as well as feature film showings. The space is rented out by local theatre communities which also contributes to its revenue.

Lakeland City Center

The Lakeland City Center is a multipurpose entertainment complex. The Jenkins Arena hosts basketball and hockey games and holds 8,000 people while the Youkey Theatre can hold 2,200 guests during a single show! There is also a 100,000 square-foot exhibition space perfect for conventions.

The Lakeland City Center is home of the Lakeland Magic, the city’s own basketball team. The Lakeland Magic are an Orlando Magic NBA affiliate. The theatre on the campus hosts an annual Broadway series, usually a collection of six of the best Tony-award winning, national Broadway tours.

The 8,000 seats Jenkins Arena can also be transformed into a premier concert space. The Lakeland City Center has hosted some of the best musicians in American history, like Elvis Presley, Bon Jovi, and Duran Duran.

Lake Hollingsworth

At the very center of the city is one of the best places to go in Lakeland to enjoy and reconnect with nature. Lake Hollingsworth is over 350 acres in area, and outflows to the Peace River which empties into the Gulf of Mexico.

The lake is named after John Henry Hollingsworth, one of Lakeland’s first pioneer settlers. Lake Hollingsworth has great views of Florida Southern College, especially the buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Water lilies pool on the surface of the water.

Surrounding the water is a 3-mile “Lake-To-Lake” trail, which is the most popular running trail in the area. Runners and birdwatchers can see roseate spoonbills, white pelicans, and long-billed dowitchers as well as the occasional otter family swimming about.

Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor’s Center

If you love art, history, architecture, or just anything beautiful, then you must take a trip to the Florida Southern College campus. Frank Lloyd Wright left his mark on Lakeland by building 13 structures on the campus!

Frank Lloyd Wright is considered the best of American architects. He believed and designed under a philosophy of “organic architecture.” Structures must be in perfect harmony with humanity and their environment.

Today, the world’s largest collection of Wright’s work is on the Florida Southern College campus. Of the 13 structures on the grounds, the collection includes Wright’s largest water feature, his only planetarium, and a theatre in the round, an acoustic marvel you have to hear to believe.

A visit to the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor’s Center is your gateway to discovering and exploring his architecture. The center houses photos and drawing of Wright’s work.

The center offers multiple tours, but the most popular option is the In-Depth Tour, which allows you to go into the structures as well as view their exteriors.

Common Ground Park

Common Ground Park is one of the most family-friendly things to do in Lakeland! Of all the parks in Florida , this is one of most non-traditional playground areas with multiple features to create an “inclusive play experience.”

This playground encourages jumping, sliding, climbing, running, and exploring for kids of all ages! The parks’ play areas are separated into different areas for age range and level of difficulty. Parents can look on from an open grassy area that is perfect for picnics and play breaks.

Younger children can enjoy a sand pit, a spinning carousel, and a challenging balance course. Older children can take on a gigantic jungle gym, a rock garden for climbing, and a towering rope mountain! Swing sets cater to all ages and even provide options for children with disabilities.

Admission to the Common Ground Park is free. Paved parking is also free.

While technically not close enough to be a Lakeland attraction, Bok Tower is only a 50-minute drive to the east and well worth the trip! It is one of the coolest hidden gems in Florida!

North of Lake Wales, Bok Tower lies in the middle of a meditation and reflection garden that doubles as a bird sanctuary.

Founded by Edward Bok, originally from the Netherlands, the grounds have been transformed into what he called “a spot of beauty second to none in the country.” We agree with this sentiment, especially when you take time to walk the grounds.

You can wander through the paved pathways and mulched trails leading to the Core Gardens, full of native Florida plants. There are so many beautiful routes to explore and get lost in!

You eventually will arrive at the actual Tower itself, which is a Carillon, a type of bell tower that can be played like an instrument. There are daily concerts and the tower’s music can be heard throughout the grounds also at half-hour intervals.

A stop on the Great Florida Birding Trail, the reflecting pool and its surrounding gardens are home to over 126 species of birds. The gardens are also home to endangered species like the Gopher Tortoise and the Eastern Indigo Snake.

Visit the Blue Palmetto Cafe for signature soups, salads, and sandwiches. Commemorate your visit at the Shop at Bok to take home unique treasures as well as plants to plant in your own garden.

20 Best Things to Do in Lakeland FL

The first time I ventured into Lakeland was years ago on a back roads route from my parents’ home in Miami to mine in Ocala after spending a long weekend with them. It was just another small, somewhat rural town. I didn’t realize then all the things to do in Lakeland FL. It was so far off my radar, it might as well have been another planet.

Fast forward several years; I gradually learned more about the town, what Lakeland’s famous for, and all the attractions in this small city. It’s been eye-opening, to say the least, and I can’t wait to continue exploring everything it offers in the years to come.

If you’re like I was and don’t know much about this central Florida town, don’t go anywhere. About Lakeland, Florida

But first, let’s briefly talk a little about Lakeland Florida. The town is located between Orlando and Tampa on I-4, the expressway that connects Tampa and Orlando. It’s located closer to Tampa and could be considered about halfway between Clearwater Beach and Orlando.

The population in 2021 was roughly 116,000. It’s about the size of Clearwater, population-wise, though it’s much less well-known. Lakeland has two very unique and different claims to fame. First, it’s the home of the largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in the world. More on that later. Second, it’s where the uber-popular Florida grocery store, Publix, is headquartered.

Now that you know a little more about Lakeland, let’s jump into the activities!

At a Glance

1. Explore the largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings in the world

I mentioned before that one of the things Lakeland is famous for is its collection of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings. If you love architecture, and especially Wright’s architecture, exploring this  collection is one of the best things to do in Lakeland.

Located on the campus of Florida Southern College, the collection was the brainchild of college president, Dr. Spivey, who approached Wright to design a “great education temple in Florida”. Wright visited the campus before agreeing to the commission. Upon seeing the land, he remarked that he could envision buildings on a campus that would grow “out of the ground and into the light – a Child of the Sun.”

Over the course of 20 years, Wright designed 18 buildings. Of those the college funded and constructed 13, one of which was built posthumously. The buildings were connected to each other via the longest system of covered walkways in his career, which became known as the Esplanade.

Florida Southern College provides tours to visit the 13 buildings and learn more about each. Ranging from a basic 90-minute tour to an in-depth 2.5 hour tour, each provides the right amount of information to suit your interest in the work of one of America’s greatest architects.

2. Come face-to-face with giant gators at Circle B Bar Reserve

You might not recognize the name Circle B Bar Reserve ; however, you might recognize the now-famous alligators which cross hiking trails right in front of people walking the shady paths. If you’ve seen one of those photos or videos, you’ve seen Circle B Bar Reserve. For the alligators alone, it’s one of the most popular things to do in Lakeland, Florida. It’s so much more than gators though.

Circle B Bar Reserve is a former cattle ranch which has been restored, in part, to a more natural state. A series of canals, ponds, and lakes provide habitat for the alligators and a host of other animals. It’s best to arrive at or shortly after sunrise when the other animals are out and about.

 At that time of morning a golden glow settles across the wetlands where sandhill cranes ply the wet ground for breakfast. Morning dew glistens from cobwebs and dangles from flower petals. It’s a beautiful way to start the day.

Circle B Bar Reserve is free, but it doesn’t offer much in the way of facilities. There are a few picnic shelters, porta-potties by the parking lot, and a Discovery Center. If hiking is your thing, the trails here provide more than 6 miles of unpaved paths to explore.

3. Enjoy a day in nature at Bonnet Springs Park

One of the fun things to do in Lakeland is Bonnet Springs Park , a 180-acre park which opened in October 2022. Bonnet Springs Park has quite a remarkable history. From the very beginning of Lakeland’s history in the 1880s, the land along the shore of Lake Bonnet was a railyard. Though it ceased operations nearly 50 years ago, the site sat abandoned, overgrown and home to many of Lakeland’s homeless.

Several years ago the community decided to restore the property to a more natural state and create a park that could be enjoyed by all. Though still a work in progress, Bonnet Springs Park features so many activities for the entire family. The Florida Children’s Museum is housed here. There’s also a canopy walk, a butterfly house, several playgrounds, a boardwalk through the wetlands, watercraft rentals, cafes, a native plant garden, a nature center, and more.

Located less than a mile from the heart of downtown Lakeland, it’s easy to enjoy a morning or afternoon strolling around Bonnet Springs Park and a great place to let the kids burn off some energy if they’ve been cooped up in the car or indoors. Like Circle B Bar Reserve, Bonnet Springs Park is free so it’s a great option for the budget-minded.

4. Find quiet contemplation at Hollis Garden

When the hustle and bustle of travel, or life in general, drives you to seek a quiet place to decompress, Hollis Garden stands up as that quiet place. Though located in the heart of downtown Lakeland, I found the 1.2 acre garden to be peaceful with its planned gardens and views of Lake Mirror.

Opened in 2000, Hollis Garden was first planned in the 1920s but Florida economic woes of the late 1920s and the Great Depression put the kibosh on the garden plans, part of a larger city beautification plan. In 2000, local philanthropists Lynn and Mark Hollis provided the funding for the creation of the garden and a perpetual fund for its upkeep.

Like many other places on this list, Hollis Garden is free to the public. On my visit, I saw families enjoying the plants, photographers with their clients picking the perfect spot for portraits, and solo travelers like myself strolling along the paved walkways. Besides being a great place to visit, Hollis Garden is walking distance to many other Lakeland things to do so it fits seamlessly into any itinerary, especially if you love visiting botanical gardens in Florida , or in general.

5. Discover stunning artwork at Polk Museum of Art

If you’re in central Florida looking for cultural things to do, Lakeland Florida might not be your first choice. But you also shouldn’t discount it. I’ve visited my fair share of museums in Florida and elsewhere. Polk Museum of Art stands as one of the finer small town museums I’ve had the pleasure to discover.

Like many other Lakeland activities, admission is free though they definitely accept donations. Permanent exhibits include a collection of African and Oceania artifacts, particularly from tribes in those parts of the world, paintings by local artists, and unique sculptures. Many of the displays we saw, however, are temporary ones though they are no less inspiring for being temporary.

Though Polk Museum of Art strives to highlight local and Florida-based artists, they also showcase artists from around the world and art created around the world. For art and history lovers, this is a must-see museum when you’re in Lakeland.

6. Take in a ball game at Detroit Tigers Spring Training

Florida in the spring is known for two things – Spring Break and Spring Training. It just happens that Lakeland is home to the Detroit Tigers for Spring Training. If you’re a baseball fan, taking in a game a Joker Marchant Stadium is one of those Lakeland FL things to do you don’t want to miss out on. 

The stadium features a 360-degree walkable concourse and a variety of seating options. Families can even spread out a picnic blanket on the outfield berm and let the kids play in the interactive children’s play area. If you aren’t in Lakeland during Spring Training, you might still have a shot at catching a game. Lakeland is home to the Minor League Lakeland Flying Tigers.

7. Go on a safari in central Florida

Go on safari? In Florida? Yes, you can! One of the most unique Lakeland, Florida attractions is Wilderness Safari Ranch . More than a zoo or a theme park – in fact, not either of those – this facility promises an adventure like no other in Florida. Located in the Green Swamp Wilderness area, one of the largest wilderness areas in Florida, Wilderness Safari Ranch offers several safari options to fit your needs.

Take a drive-thru safari tour from the comfort of your own vehicle, perhaps a good option for families with small children. Or take a custom vehicle tour on the ranch’s custom open-air truck. If you’re looking for something a little more on the wild side, try an ATV tour, a camel tour, or a kayak tour. And you can even spend the night with their new safari glamping.

So what makes Wilderness Safari Ranch different from other wildlife parks, like Wild Florida ? The 260-acre ranch is home to herds of some of the most exotic species from around the world. You won’t just see giraffes and zebras. You’ll see animals such as waterbuck, red lechwe, Uganda kob antelope, oryx (which are now extinct in the wild), and springbok.

8. Take a tour of the Publix Dairy Processing Plant

Publix Super Market is one of the largest grocery retailers in the Southeastern US, the largest employee-owned supermarket, and its Pub sub has garnered a cult-like following in Florida. Though the first Publix grocery store opened in 1930 in nearby Winter Haven, the grocery giant is now headquartered in Lakeland. It’s no wonder, then, that when you visit Lakeland, Florida you might want to visit places like their dairy processing plant.

The retailer’s largest plant is located in Lakeland and produces milk, ice cream, cultured products, and even carbonated soft drinks. This facility, like everything Publix does, is innovative in many ways, such as long production runs which equate to longer shelf life. This and many other details are covered in the tour. And – bonus! – it ends with a free scoop of ice cream.

9. Find fresh produce and more at Lakeland Downtown Farmers Market

One of my favorite things to do when traveling around the sunshine state is visit one of the many farmers markets in Florida . Not only can I find fresh produce to enjoy throughout the day, I often find beautiful handmade gifts to bring home for family and friends. Lakeland’s farmers’ market is more formally called the Lakeland Downtown Farmers Curb Market , because vendors set up along the curb on the streets of downtown Lakeland.

If you’re running low on stuff to do in Lakeland, put the farmers market on your list. As many as 100 vendors gather Saturday mornings to offer their wares, rain or shine. Here, you’ll find all the things that make a farmers market great – produce and plants, art and repurposed furniture, honey and coffee, baked goods and ready-to-eat food, jewelry and exotic creations.

The market’s location also makes it a perfect place to start your Saturday with coffee and a baked treat from one of the vendors, then walk over to Hollis Garden, the Promenade, or one of nearby playgrounds.

10. Take in a show at the historic Polk Theater

When looking for entertainment in Lakeland, be sure to check what’s playing at the historic Polk Theatre. Built in 1928, the Theatre was conceived by businessman John E. Melton who wanted to bring a vaudeville/movie palace to the rural town. He envisioned a multipurpose building, anchored by the movie palace and funded by street-front offices and retail stores. 

Like many movie palaces of that era, Polk Theatre offered an opulent escape for everyone. Italian immigrant J. E. Casale created a place of magic and wonder influenced by his home country. The interior resembles a Mediterranean village. Flanked by Italianate walls with niches, sconces, and faux balconies and windows, the patron’s eye is drawn toward the stage and the full scale Italian renaissance “townhouse” setting that dominates the Polk’s interior.

Today, the 1,400 seat theater showcases several forms of entertainment, from ballet to comedy, classic movies to plays. Check their website to see what’s currently playing.

11. Explore one-of-a-kind aircrafts at Florida Air Museum

One of the most popular tourist attractions in Lakeland Florida is the Florida Air Museum . Designated the “Official Aviation Museum and Education Center of the State of Florida”, Florida Air Museum displays unique aircraft, such as warbirds, antiques, and ultralights. It also offers year-round education in partnership with the Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE) and year-round camping on the Sun ‘N Fun campus.

First opened in a corner of a hangar at Sun ‘N Fun in the 1980s, the museum was meant to be a temporary one. However, it gained popularity, took over the hangar, and in 1991, the city of Lakeland helped fund the present-day museum building. Florida Air Museum strives to stay at the forefront of aviation education as well as pay tribute to aviation’s history.

12. Taste-test your way around Lakeland on a Tasty Tuesdays tour

Attention Foodies! If you plan to visit Lakeland, plan your visit around the third Tuesday of the month to experience one of the most mouthwatering activities in Lakeland FL – Tasty Tuesdays. Each month, Tasty Tuesdays features samples from ten eateries in downtown Lakeland and live music at Munn Park. It works similar to a “Taste of” festival.

The ticket package costs $25 and includes 10 tickets, one for each participating restaurant. Tickets are valid for a special sample plate on that evening any time from 4:30pm to 9:00pm. Patrons can eat at their own pace and can choose to use more than one ticket at the same restaurant. It’s basically a choose your own food adventure around downtown Lakeland. Participating restaurants vary from month to month, and you can see the current lineup at the Downtown Lakeland website .

13. Delight in all the fun at Florida Children’s Museum

Located in Bonnet Springs Park, the Florida Children’s Museum is one of the best things to do in Lakeland with kids. The 47,800 square foot facility features several unique spaces spread across two floors with the mission of “curating the world for all children to explore.” The state-of-the-art museum opened in November 2022 and promises hands-on exploration for the entire family.

Florida Children’s Museum offers exhibits for all ages. Littles can grow with seeds in the Watermelon Seeds exhibit. Older children might enjoy designing the vehicles of the future in the Design Park or acting out their dream life in City Play. The actors, videographers, and musicians of the family can create their own film, stop-action animation, or beats in TBD. Outside, the Harrell Family Charities Front Yard offers an enclosed space in which kids can play on the 100-foot long alligator, in the Dig Pit, or with a display of fossils. 

The museum is also sensory-friendly, working with the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (C.A.R.D.) at the University of South Florida to create a space that can be enjoyed by all. These special features include shades on the windows, predictive floor patterns, sound-dampening walls, and wheelchair access throughout. The museum also offers sensory kits with headphones, fidget toys, and sunglasses.

14. Learn more about Frank Lloyd Wright at the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center

Though we know it as the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center , the actual name is The Sharp Family Tourism and Education Center and Geico Gift Shop. If you have a lot of Lakeland Florida activities on your bucket list and find yourself unable to take one of the walking tours of Wright’s buildings at Florida Southern College, the visitor center is a good alternative.

The Center is made of the Usonian Faculty House – Wright’s vision for on-campus faculty housing – and the gift shop. Here, visitors learn more about Wright’s vision and architecture. It’s also from where the walking tours depart so if you’re taking one of those, you’ll see the Visitor Center. Be sure to visit the gift shop for a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired t-shirt or gift.

15. Find the perfect antique at the Lakeland Antique Mall

I don’t know about you but for me there’s something thrilling about poking through overstuffed booths to find the perfect treasure to bring home. I don’t do it often, but I do enjoy finding places like the Lakeland Antique Mall. Many might question this being one of the best attractions in Lakeland Florida but hear me out. 

The Lakeland Antique Mall encompasses 44,000 square feet. That’s larger than the average grocery store in the United States. With around 250 vendors, it’s jam-packed with eccentric and diverse items to poke through on the hunt for your latest treasure. What kind of finds are waiting for you here? You name it, it’s probably here – Disney props, Dixie Belle paint, old board games, vintage lamps, and nearly anything that brings back nostalgia. It’s worth a visit, even if just to see the life-sized horse out front and the life-sized velociraptor “greeter” at the front door.

16. Sample Lakeland’s best food trucks at Thursday Squared Food Truck Rally

Are you a foodie AND love food trucks? You might want to skip Tasty Tuesdays and make plans for Thursday Squared Food Trucks on the second Thursday of each month instead. Or just stay in town for a week and do both. After all, there are certainly plenty of things to do in Lakeland FL.

Thursday Squared is a partnership between Downtown Lakeland and Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally. Held in Munn Park from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, more than 20 food trucks usually participate. It’s a great time to sample the food from different trucks or support your favorites.

17. Pile in the car for a movie at the Silver Moon Drive-In

When drive-in movies in Florida and around the United States continue to decline and go out of business, the Silver Moon Drive-In thrives and is one of the most fun things to do in Lakeland Florida. One of only four drive-ins left in Florida, the Silver Moon has been serving entertainment in the Lakeland area for 75 years.

This drive-in has two screens and shows movies seven nights a week. The current and coming week’s movies can be found on their website. It also plays rain or shine. On weekend days, the grounds turn into a swap shop with dozens of vendors. Silver Moon Drive-In is also a dog-friendly spot so you can truly bring the entire family.

18. Discover the stories behind Lakeland’s most historic buildings

Occasionally we find guided walking tours of the historic districts in Lakeland. The Merchants Association has held one in the past and downtown Lakeland hosted a long running night time historic tour of the Munn District until 2023. That tour also appears to be discontinued for the moment. If you’re looking specifically for a guided tour, reach out to the city to see if they have any coming up.

All that aside, you can still go on a self-guided historic walking tour of the Munn District. This historic district is significant because it has the largest concentration of commercial vernacular buildings and is the oldest district in Lakeland. The printable map and brochure provides information about 45 historic buildings, including the Railroad Station, Munn Park, Lake Mirror Promenade, Terrace Hotel, and the Magnolia Building.

19. Plan your escape at an escape room

Escape rooms have popped up in nearly every city across the United States, offering thrilling fun for families and groups of friends. If escape rooms are your idea of fun things to do, Lakeland offers three for you to choose from. Two of these are in downtown Lakeland and make a perfect escape from normal vacation plans, especially if you want to leave the car at the hotel. Walking distance to Lake Mirror and the restaurants around there, it’s a great option for a night of fun before or after a good meal.

20. Take out your frustrations ax throwing

Like escape rooms, ax throwing has become a popular pastime in cities around the United States. Not surprising, it’s one of our favorite things to do in Lakeland at night. Or in the afternoon – I guess it depends on your frustration levels.

Ax-Caliber is a restaurant and ax venue which offers the best of both. At this unique place, you can grab a great meal with favorites like wings, Cuban sandwich, or flatbreads. From there move over to the ax-throwing venue for a fun evening of bullseyes and memories, or to the virtual range where shooters of all levels can practice on simulators powered by Smokeless Range technology. Whatever you choose, it promises to be a fun night to remember.

Where to Stay in Lakeland, Florida

When I’m in Lakeland, my favorite place to stay is The Terrace Hotel . An historic hotel, it’s now part of the Hilton family. With a great central location and easy parking, it’s a perfect place to use as a base and walk to everything Lakeland offers. For a more budget-friendly option, try the nearby Springhill Suites .

Where to Eat in Lakeland

Though there are dozens of good restaurants in Lakeland, here are some of my favorites and places I always recommend to friends or family who are looking for a good meal in this area.

• Cuban Delights Cafe (because I have to try Cuban food anywhere I go!)
• Fancy Q Sushi & Thai (if you’re craving something Asian)
• Purple Onion Deli-Grill (for a great sandwich)

Escape the city and head to one of  Florida’s National forests . With its neighboring areas Blackwater River State Forest has the largest population of longleaf pine trees in the world. Explore the natural landscape by foot on a hike by canoe or on horseback. Float down one of the waterways and stop for a picnic on the shimmering white sands of a sandbar.

From Destin/Fort Walton Beach

Known as the birthplace of New Urbanism (and the setting for the 1998 film “The Truman Show”), Seaside is an idyllic Northwest Florida community set against the area’s stunning beaches and makes for a great Florida day trip. Check out the quaint art galleries and shops or try stand-up paddleboarding in the crystal-blue waters.

Seaside, a Northwest Florida town built from scratch in the 1980s, is the standard for New Urbanism, a design movement that emphasizes an organic marriage of street life, local businesses, and neighborly gathering spots. The beach is pretty extraordinary, too.

From Tallahassee

Wakulla springs.

Wakulla Springs is more a park than a city but one well worth making a special day trip from Tallahassee. Located fewer than 20 miles from Tallahassee’s city center  Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park  features one of the largest and deepest  natural springs in Florida . That may be why “The Creature from the Black Lagoon” was filmed here! Take a boat tour to see local critters such as alligators turtles and birds. Of course you won’t be able to resist dipping into the refreshingly cool springs too.

Amelia island and fernandina beach.

Amelia Island is a golf and spa haven while  Fernandina Beach  to the north is a quaint historic town known for its artwork antiques and boutiques. Both are great day trips from Jacksonville. Some must-see attractions on Amelia Island are  Fort Clinch State Park  which served as a military post during the Civil War the Spanish-American War and World War II; Amelia Island Lighthouse which began operating in 1839 and still operates today; and American Beach which was founded in 1935 by A.L. Lewis Florida’s first African-American millionaire.

Tour the nation’s oldest city via a guided tour bus or tram and stop at all the major points of interest including an authentic Spanish fort and the Fountain of Youth. Indulge your sweet tooth with a free tour of Angell & Phelps Chocolate Factory. Take in the exhibits at the Smithsonian-affiliated Museum of Arts and Sciences.

Visit the famed Florida Keys without the long drive. Stop in Key Largo for its world-class diving at  John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park . Visit the Holiday Inn marina to see and take a tour on the original African Queen from the classic Humphrey Bogart flick of the same name. Lakeland: An Overview

Lakeland is the biggest city in the Polk County area. People started living here in the 1870s, about ten years after the Polk County area was made. In the 1880s, they built a rail line, and Lakeland grew by 80 more acres. This area is now the downtown part of the city. It has the biggest group of buildings designed by Frank Llyod Wright at Florida Southern College. Visitors can enjoy walking on the historic promenade, exploring museums, checking out the Hollis Garden, and watching shows at the theater.

Lakeland has been in big Hollywood movies like Adam Sandler's The Waterboy and Edward Scissorhands. Whether visiting Lakeland as a tourist or just here briefly, you'll love this place.

1. Visit Circle B Bar Reserve

Location: 4399 Winter Lake Road (SR 540), Lakeland, FL 33803.

Start your Lakeland adventure by visiting the Circle B Bar Reserve . It was a big cattle ranch, about 1276 acres, and now it is preserved to protect the southern flora and fauna. The Circle B Bar Reserve is right by Lake Hancock, where the Peace River starts, flowing to the Gulf of Mexico. So, when you visit, you might see alligators!

The Polk County Environmental Lands Program did a lot of work to improve the land. They restored the Banana Creek marsh system and did many projects to help the land work the right way again. It is an excellent place for people who love hiking, bike riding, and fishing in Lake Hancock. It's also a great picnic spot. The reserve includes the Great Florida Birding Trail, so if you like watching birds, keep an eye out for osprey, eagles, hawks, white ibis, and turkeys. You may spot other animals like bobcats, otters, frogs, turtles, and armadillos. The best part? It is free! Perfect for nature lovers. 

2. Go To Safari Wilderness Ranch

Location: 10850 Moore Rd, Lakeland, Florida 33809

Hours: Open daily, 9 am – 5 pm 

Even though there are lots of animals at Circle B, you might have to look around to find them all. But if you want to get close to majestic creatures like water buffaloes and ostriches, you should visit Safari Wilderness Ranch . It is a big wildlife park in Lakeland, covering more than 260 acres. The park is privately owned and home to over 400 animals from around the world. You can visit the safari by driving in your car or joining a guided tour in a safari vehicle with a canopy. 

Are you looking for more adventure? Try a guided tour on a camel, kayak, or ATV! While there, you can feed and interact with animals like camels, zebras, ring-tailed lemurs, Irish Dexter cattle, and African Watusi. For those who want a luxurious and adventurous experience, Safari Wilderness also offers glamping.   

3. Take a Stroll in the Hollis Garden

Location: 614 E. Orange St,. Lakeland, FL 33801

Hours: Tue-Sun: 10 am – 6 pm

If you're looking for a relaxing thing to do in Lakeland, consider visiting Hollis Garden ! This 1.2-acre botanical garden is located near the lake and features neoclassical architecture. Hollis Garden feels like a cozy secret garden with shaded spots and benches. This garden is made in a rococo style, with raised flower beds, tropical bushes, green ferns, wildflowers, and native trees. There are also many lovely fountains around. You will find over 10,000 flowers, decorative shrubs, and trees here. 

As you enter the gardens, you'll hear classical music playing in the background. There are ponds with Koi fish swimming around and sculptures and statues to add to the overall ambiance. While there is no admission fee, bringing some cash is a good idea. There's a small stand selling cakes, tea, and wine to enjoy while admiring the garden's beauty. Hollis Garden is undoubtedly one of the top free attractions in Lakeland!

4. Visit the Lake Morton Historic District

Lakeland is also known as “Swan City,” and visiting Lake Morton will show you why. This quiet lake is home to a large population of graceful swans. Lake Morton got its name from John P. Morton, who owned the land near the lake. It is located in the middle of Lake Hollingsworth and Lake Mirror. Besides its peaceful atmosphere, one special thing about the lake is its clear water. It is pretty rare because you can see the bottom of the lake clearly. The area around the lake has hiking paths and walking trails so visitors can better look at the beautiful water. 

Lake Morton is not just a quiet place; it's also filled with activities. People often go fishing there. There are also boat ramps on the northwest shore, allowing people to enjoy the lake from a boat, feeling the waves. Lake Morton is at the center of the Lake Morton Historic District , which started in 1906. Many houses near the lake were constructed in the 1920s. The lake is near the Polk Museum of Art and Florida Southern College. 

5. Explore Polk Museum of Art

Location: 800 E Palmetto St, Lakeland, FL 33801

Hours: Tue-Sat: 10 am – 4 pm, Sun: 1 pm – 5 pm

6. Visit Frank Llyod Wright at Florida Southern College

Location: 840 Johnson Ave, Lakeland, FL 33801

Lakeland is home to the most extensive collection of buildings designed by the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright. He was an architect known for “organic architecture.” He started working with Florida Southern College in 1938 and built 13 buildings on this campus. Today, this college has the most significant collection of Wright's architecture in one place worldwide. One famous building on the campus is the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, the first one built. The chapel is known for its 65-foot bell tower and large skylights that let in natural light.

Other important buildings on the campus include special covered walkways, the Polk County Science Building, the Water Dome, and the Lucius Pond Ordway Industrial Arts Building. The Sharp Family Tourism & Education Center is the most recent building. If you like architecture, you must visit these iconic landmarks!

7. Wander Through the Lake Mirror Park

Location: 121 S Lake Ave, Lakeland, FL 33801 

Located right beside Hollis Gardens, Lake Mirror Park is one of the most beautiful spots in downtown Lakeland. Its name comes from the lake's clear water, making it a popular choice for locals seeking a day surrounded by nature and culture. This beautiful park has a big walkway next to the water, perfect for walking or riding a bike. The walk is about one mile long, and you can see the lovely Lake Mirror. You'll also see geese, swans, and other birds. You'll find a beautiful fountain and pretty sculptures along the path in the middle of the lake. This park is a hub for arts and culture, featuring facilities like the Lake Mirror Theatre.

After enjoying the park, plenty of dining options are available across the street. Popular spots include the Texas Cattleman's Restaurant and the Garden Cafe. With its stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere perfect for a leisurely afternoon, Lake Mirror Park is a must-visit in Lakeland. For larger groups, there is a 200-foot swimming beach and 20 campsites available.

8. Go to Joker Marchant Stadium

Location: 2125 North Lake Ave. Lakeland, FL 33805

If you are a baseball lover, you must visit Joker Marchant Stadium , a baseball field established in 1966. It got its name from Marcus “Joker” Marchant, a former director of Lakeland Parks and Recreation” and a local personality. In 2017, the field got a new name – Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium. Publix is a popular supermarket chain in Florida with its headquarters in Lakeland. Recently, they added more box seats, covered sections, air-conditioned areas, restrooms, concessions, a new practice field, and wheelchair-accessible seating. 

If you visit in spring, you can see the Detroit Tigers practicing and playing. You can also see live home games of the league teams like Lakeland Flying Tigers and Gulf Coast Tigers. You can also enjoy delicious food, making it a fun spot to enjoy some baseball games. 

9. Explore Florida Air Museum

Location: 4075 James C Ray Dr., Lakeland, FL 33811

Hours: Mon-Sat: 10 am – 4 pm, Sun 12 pm – 4 pm

One of the fun things to do in Lakeland is visit the Florida Air Museum , the official Aviation and Aerospace Education Center in Florida! It is a great place for a day trip from Orlando or Tampa. You can learn about Howard Hughes, a famous aviator, at the museum. You'll see his personal things, actual flight gear, and awards from his aviation and film career. 

For kids, there's a special area called the Discovery Zone. It has games about science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). You can also dress up like an aviator and take fun photos!

The museum displays aircraft types like the Vertical Riser, the Tomcat, and the SeaDart. They want to inspire the next generation of aerospace engineers and aviators. Sometimes, the Blue Angels even perform shows to make it more exciting! The best event is the SUN' n FUN Aerospace Expo in March. It is like a big show with airplanes flying, workshops to learn more, and you can even camp there!

10. Visit Lake Hollingsworth

Location: 920 Lake Hollingsworth Drive, Lakeland, FL 33801

Lake Hollingsworth is one of the big lakes in Lakeland that covers 350 acres. This circular lake is well-maintained, with many lily pads and trees around it. When the sun sets, the water looks colorful with purples, oranges, and pinks. The lake got its name from John Henry Hollingsworth, one of the first people to live here. From Lake Hollingsworth, you can see the beautiful buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright at Florida Southern College. There are also water lilies floating on the lake.

Around the water, you can see a 3-mile trail, the “Lake-To-Lake” trail. Here, you can see long-billed dowitchers, white pelicans, roseate spoonbills, and sometimes, families of otters swimming around. It is a perfect place for social events, and it hosts the Orange Cup Regatta and various marathons throughout the year.

11. Explore Munn Park Historic District

Location: 202 E Main St, Lakeland, FL 33801

Munn Park Historic District is in the middle of downtown Lakeland. It's like the main part of the community. The park has a fountain and lots of open green space for people to enjoy. The park is surrounded by 48 old buildings that have been well-maintained. You can take a relaxed walk through the area and look at the old buildings. There are also many places to eat, shop, and drink coffee. Some other interesting old buildings here are the Old Coca-Cola building and the Old City Hall. 

Something special happens every first Friday of the month at Munn Park. It's called “First Friday.” The streets near the park are closed, and it turns into a car show. At First Friday, you'll also find a Makers Market with artists, crafters, and over 60 exhibitors. Take a seat on one of the benches, enjoy the shade of old oak trees, and soak in the historic ambiance of this lovely downtown park.

12. Take Your Kids to Explorations V Children's Museum

Location: 109 North Kentucky Avenue, Lakeland, FL 33801

The Explorations V Children's Museum is a must-visit destination for families visiting Lakeland. This non-profit museum is about creating a world where kids can explore and learn. The “V” stands for the five senses – touching, seeing, and hearing. Kids can learn about arts and sciences through the power of play. The museum has interactive exhibits that encourage creativity. On the Basement Floor, there's an orange grove where kids can learn about different parts of the world. The First Floor has more hands-on activities for science, history, and music. There's even a special area called “The Tot Spot” for toddlers. The Second Floor is all about art. There's a big chalkboard where kids can draw and a gallery full of art. 

The museum has a “Dreamer's Gallery” with interactive brain teasers and science stuff. In this museum, your little ones can pretend to be broadcasters in the News Station, play with audio in the Sound Studio, try running a business in the Explore Store, and much more.

13. Take a Tour of Colt Creek State Park

Location: 16000 FL-471, Lakeland, FL 33809

Colt Creek State Park has beautiful landscapes like Flatwoods, cypress swamps, and sand pine scrub. You can explore the park easily with its many hiking trails. You'll find a variety of birds and reptiles like owls, alligators, eagles, hawks, and turtles. Otters also live here, so you might see them too. For bird lovers, the park is a treat with more than 150 different kinds of birds. It is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail.

If you're feeling adventurous, check out Green Swamp Wilderness Area. It has 33 miles of hiking trails, areas for hunting turkeys, deer, and hogs, and good fishing spots. You can do many things in the park, like watching birds, horseback riding, hiking, biking, or glamping under the stars. You can also go canoeing or kayaking in the winding creeks.

14. Attend Lakeland Food Truck Rally

The Lakeland Food Truck Rally is a fantastic event every second Thursday of the month in Munn Park, downtown Lakeland. This gathering brings together over 20 food trucks offering plenty of delicious choices. Attendees can enjoy mouthwatering treats from various food vendors, such as Got Desserts, Spontaneous Consumption, and Mr. C's Grilled Cheese. The event is not just about food; it also features live music, creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere. The Food Truck Rally is an excellent opportunity for food lovers to explore different cuisines, indulge in tasty treats, and enjoy the vibrant community spirit of Lakeland. 

15. Visit Polk Theatre

Location: 121 South Florida Ave., Lakeland, FL 33801

Check out the old Polk Theatre to have fun and step back in time! This place used to be a vaudeville movie palace built during the Golden Age. It can fit 1,400 people and has cool features like high balconies, a colorful Venetian piazza, and a painted cloud. The inside is beautiful, like a courtyard from the Mediterranean, and it even has stars on the ceiling. 

The Polk Theatre is a super old place and makes money from its regular movie screenings and Performing Arts shows. Local theater groups also rent the space, adding to its income. You can even rent the theater for your events like weddings or parties. They show cool stuff like a Mary Poppins Sing-A-Long and do interactive performances with cult classics like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Get some popcorn, find your seat, and enjoy a great time at the Polk Theatre!

16. Shop at Lakeland Antique Mall

Location: 3530 US Highway 98 North, Lakeland, FL 33809

Lastly, if you want to bring something special home with you, visit the Lakeland Antique Mall . It is a small store full of old and cool things. They have furniture, art, jewelry, pottery, and even clothes. You can also find many Disney items there, like Christmas ornaments, costumes, fake fruits, and even furniture from hotels. It's a great place to explore and discover interesting old items. More than 250 people sell their things there, so you might find a hidden treasure!

The Best Things To Do In Scenic Lakeland, Florida

Lakeland is literally in the middle of Central Florida. If you’ve never experienced the notable towns in Central Florida, you are in for a real treat. While the crowds are more scarce than the coastal cities, the scenery, service, and offerings are equally good, minus beaches. You can reach Lakeland by road trip or by flying into the Orlando or Tampa airports — it is about equal distance to both.

Admire Lakeland’s Swans

If you happen to visit Lakeland’s Lake Morton in the springtime, you will be privy to something so unique that it feels like it belongs in a fairytale. Swan nesting season. Lake Morton has dozens of white and black swans, with swan nesting areas marked off with caution tape. The swans have been an iconic presence in Lakeland for almost 100 years. In addition to seeing these majestic creatures, you’ll also have hundreds of white shorebirds, enormous pelicans (not the same type we have in Vero Beach), ibis, and wood storks.

Overall, I know we had to see 1,000 birds or more in one afternoon. Feeders around the lake will dole out a handful of bird food for a quarter fee. The ibis loved following us around for a bite.

Wine And Dine

Harry’s Seafood Bar and Grille is a Lakeland favorite, serving downtown patrons a delicious Louisiana-inspired cajun and creole menu. From hurricanes to jambalaya, crawfish etouffee to red beans and rice, you can find all of your favorites at this neighborhood eatery. Save room for Banana’s Foster.

Pro Tip: There is usually a wait for tables at Harry’s. They do offer the Call-Ahead Seating Program to help reduce your wait time. Call 30 minutes before arrival to get your party’s name on the list.

Wander An Exceptional Garden

Downtown Lakeland is home to Hollis Garden , a beautiful and serene landscape that sits on the banks of Lake Mirror. Besides the occasional sculpture and statue, the plants are unique and well labeled, which I always find refreshing. There are also ornamental shrubs and vegetable gardens meticulously placed amidst the typical flowers and trees, which are exceptionally done. Hollis Garden is free to visit, and I suggest you walk along the lake, too, for photo-ops and bird sightings.

Fun Fact: Historic Lake Mirror Tours are offered on the fourth Tuesday of every month. Call 863-834-2280 to book the time and “look for the lantern.”

Those seeking unique getaways or those interested in architecture and Frank Lloyd Wright, quaint downtowns, and world-class animal and art attractions will love Lakeland. The town keeps growing and growing, and before long, everyone will discover just how uber cool and fun this Polk County city is. Roll down your windows and get a good whiff of the tantalizing orange blossom scent you are sure to experience from the native orange groves. See The Largest Frank Lloyd Wright Collection

Florida Southern College is home to the most extensive collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture in the world. While the tour isn’t currently running due to COVID, and with the college not encouraging visitors at the moment (to ensure the students’ safety), when it does reopen, this is one place you’re not likely ever to forget.

Tour highlights include the Usonian Faculty House (inside house tours available once touring resumes), its unique fountain and Frank Lloyd Wright statue, the iconic Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, and the gorgeous Water Dome. You will get your eyes full of Frank’s exquisite work and intricate details, 13 works in total, at this National Historic Landmark property.

Take Me Out To The Ballgame

Florida is home to spring baseball, and for us Floridians, it is the primary sign of spring — and one of the best things to do in Lakeland. Venture over to Publix Field (Joker Merchant Stadium) to see the Detroit Tigers play during pre-season spring training. Games are affordable, and if you can get tickets, it is an excellent way to spend the day. Tigertown USA, as the field is referred to, is easy to get in and out of, clean, and every seat is genuinely a good one. Parking is $10.

Drink Delicious Coffee

Lakeland has a handful of locally-owned coffee shops, but Black and Brew really stood out to me. It has indoor and outdoor seating, elegant but straightforward exposed brick decor, and a full-service menu with paninis, homemade soup, salads, and sandwiches. The Dill Pickle and Bacon flatbread was a perfect choice, and even though it didn’t really pair with my frozen peanut butter latte (drink and dessert in my eyes), they were both superb.

Have A Mind-Blowing Breakfast

I discovered Frescos Southern Kitchen and Bar on my last Lakeland visit, and let me tell you, the food is terrific. For breakfast, try the Knuckle Bowl, piled high with hashbrowns, loads of cheese, peppers, chicken, shrimp, and Andouille. Then, they top the concoction with eggs done your way — I chose poached. It was seriously a great dish. Though my husband ordered the perfect Eggs Benedict, he was jealous after tasting mine. Frescos also has boozy adult shakes or deluxe shakes with all of the candies and edible decorations around the glass that make for jaw-dropping photos and fun.

Visitors can find a handful of public golf courses in Lakeland, so bring your clubs and set a tee time. Choose between Big Cypress Golf and Country Club , Cleveland Heights , Sandpiper Golf and Country Club , Sanlan , and The Club at Eaglebrooke. Lakeland’s courses are described as “beautiful and affordable.”

Fun Murals And Outdoor Art

Lakeland is quite an artsy city with many creative murals and art exhibits around town. My favorite murals were Oranges and Greetings from Lakeland , at 802 N Massachusetts Avenue and 505 MLK, Jr. Drive, respectively. Also, stop by Munn Park for the lovely fountain with dancing waters and several cool art installments around the historic green space.

Hike At Circle B Bar Reserve

Circle B Bar Reserve , formerly a 1,267-acre cattle ranch in nearby Bartow, is the premier hiking, cycling, and bird-watching spots in Polk County. You can learn about the ecosystems, see alligators in their native habitat, and explore the Polk Nature Discovery Center during your visit. For an easy hike, consider the Shady Oak or Lost Bridge Trail. Be on the lookout for spoonbills, pelicans, fox, woodpeckers, and great blue herons.

Pro Tip: Wear comfortable shoes, stay hydrated, and bring bug spray.

Visit An Art Gallery

The Polk Museum of Art is a small but mighty gallery with two floors of modern and contemporary art exhibits, most temporary and rotating. The first floor currently houses the Toulouse and Lautrec of the 1890s Paris, France fame exhibition. Framed and matted drawings and paintings tell the Moulin Rouge and Paris dance halls’ story in these descriptive and unique pieces.

Upstairs, an exhibit of how families around the world eat, with details of their diet, income, and work hours, was fascinating. There are beautiful outdoor sculptures at the gallery, too. Don’t miss the upscale gift shop — one of the best I’ve seen in Florida — and the Pablo Picasso ceramic plates.

Take A Safari

Safari Wilderness is one of Lakeland’s hidden gems. This covered safari-style ride-through park on 260 acres is truly one of the most amazing things I’ve done in The Sunshine State. You can take a private group or go with the other scheduled guests in a socially distanced safari vehicle through the rugged terrain to see exotic game such as Grant’s zebra, oryx, Watusi cattle, and Greater Kudu up close and personal. We even fed water buffalo, ostrich, and camels out of our hands … it was so cool!

For an additional fee, you can hand-feed grapes to the cute little lemurs with velvety-soft hands and mesmerizing eyes. Other feedings include guinea pigs and budgies. Kids and adults will love Safari Wilderness. Bonus, they have several other animals, many rare, to engage with and see.

See In A Drive-In Movie

Experience first-run movies at one of the two screens at Lakeland’s Silver Moon Drive-In Theatre . Tune in to the film through your FM dial (though I’m sure all of you remember these good ole days) and relax in the comfort (and safety) of your vehicle and enjoy the show. Silver Moon has been delighting moviegoers since 1948. Admission is $6 per person. Concessions are available.

Where To Stay In Lakeland

One of Lakeland’s newer hotels is the pristine SpringHill Suites by Marriott . The property is in a good location and features 126 stylish and spacious suites and a full-service bar off the lobby. A swimming pool surrounded by bright and cheery lime green loungers and covered tables and chairs awaits you outside. Parking and high-speed internet are complimentary with your stay.

Pro Tip: If you have time, consider staying in the area for a few days. Other nearby towns to see in Polk County include Winter Haven (LEGOLAND), Lake Wales (Bok Tower), and Bartow (Wonder House).

A haven no more: Women’s groups brace for Florida’s 6-week abortion ban

Monica Kelly was thrilled to learn she was expecting her second child.

The Tennessee mother was around 13 weeks pregnant when, according to a lawsuit filed against the state of Tennessee, doctors gave her the devastating news that her baby had Patau syndrome .

The genetic disorder causes serious developmental defects and often results in miscarriage, stillbirth or death within one year of birth. Continuing her pregnancy, doctors told her, could put her at risk of infection and complications that include high blood pressure, organ failure and death.

But they said they could not perform an abortion due to a Tennessee law banning most abortions that went into effect two months after the repeal of Roe v. Wade in June 2022, court records show.

So Kelly traveled to a Northwest Florida hospital to get an abortion while about 15 weeks pregnant. She is one of seven women and two doctors suing Tennessee because they say the state’s near-total abortion ban imperils the lives of pregnant women.

More than 25,000 women like Kelly traveled to Florida for an abortion over the past five years, state data shows. Most came from states such as Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi with little or no access to abortion, data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows . Hundreds traveled from as far as Texas.

But a recent Florida Supreme Court ruling paved the way for the Sunshine State to enforce a six-week ban beginning in May, effectively leaving women in much of the Southern United States with little or no access to abortion clinics. The ban could be short-lived if 60% of Florida voters in November approve a constitutional amendment adding the right to an abortion.

In the meantime, nonprofit groups are warning they may not be able to meet the increased demand for help from women from Florida and other Southeastern states to travel for an abortion. They fear women who lack the resources will be forced to carry unwanted pregnancies to term because they cannot afford to travel to states where abortions are more available.

That could include women whose pregnancies, like Kelly’s, put them at risk.

“The six-week ban is really a problem not just for Florida but the entire Southeast,” said McKenna Kelley, a board member of the Tampa Bay Abortion Fund . “Florida was the last man standing in the Southeast for abortion access.”

Travel bans and stricter limits

Supporters of the Florida restrictions aren’t backing down. Some want even stricter limits. Republican state Rep. Mike Beltran , who represents a district south of Tampa, voted for both the 15-week and six-week bans. He said the vast majority of abortions are elective and that those related to medical complications make up a tiny fraction.

State data shows that 95% of abortions last year were either elective or performed due to social or economic reasons. More than 5% were related to issues with either the health of the mother or the fetus.

Beltran said he would support a ban on travel for abortions but knows it would be challenged in the courts. He would support measures that prevent employers from paying for workers to travel for abortions and such costs being tax-deductible, he said.

“I don’t think we should make it easier for people to travel for abortion,” he said. “We should put things in to prevent circumvention of the law.”

Both abortion bans were also supported by GOP state lawmaker Joel Rudman , who represents parts of Okaloosa and Santa Rosa counties in Florida’s Panhandle. As a physician, Rudman said he has delivered more than 100 babies and sees nothing in the current law that sacrifices patient safety.

“It is a good commonsense law that provides reasonable exceptions yet respects the sanctity of life for both mother and child,” he said in a text message.

Last year, the first full year that many Southern states had bans in place, more than 7,700 women came to Florida for an abortion, an increase of roughly 59% compared with three years ago.

The Tampa Bay Abortion Fund, which is focused on helping local women, found itself assisting an influx of women from Arkansas, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana and other states, Kelley said.

In 2023, it paid out more than $650,000 for appointment costs and over $67,000 in other expenses, such as airplane tickets and lodging. Most of those who seek assistance are from low-income families, including minorities or disabled people, Kelley said.

“We ask each person, ‘What can you contribute?’” she said. “Some say zero and that’s fine.”

Florida’s new law will mean her group will have to pivot again. The focus will now be on helping women here travel to other states.

But the destinations are farther and more expensive. Most women, she expects, will head to New York, Illinois or Washington, D.C. Clinic appointments in those places are often more expensive. The extra travel distance will mean help is needed with hotels and airfare.

North Carolina, which allows abortions through 12 weeks of pregnancy, may be a slightly cheaper option for some women whose pregnancies are not as far along, she said.

Keeping up with that need is a concern, she said. Donations to the group soared to $755,000 in 2022, which Kelley described as “rage donations” made after the U.S. Supreme Court ended half a century of guaranteeing the federal right to an abortion.

The anger didn’t last. Donations in 2023 declined to $272,000, she said.

“We’re going to have huge problems on our hands in a few weeks,” she said. “A lot of people who need an abortion are not going to be able to access one. That’s really scary and sad.”

Gray areas lead to confusion

The Chicago Abortion Fund is expecting that many women from Southeastern states will head its way.

Illinois offers abortions up until fetal viability — around 24 to 26 weeks. The state five years ago repealed its law requiring parents to be notified when their children seek an abortion.

About 4 out of 10 abortions performed in Illinois two years ago — almost 17,000 — involved out-of-state residents, up from fewer than a third the previous year, according to state records.

The Chicago nonprofit has prided itself on not turning away requests for help over the past five years, said Qudsiyyah Shariyf, a deputy director. It is adding staffers, including Spanish-language speakers, to cope with an anticipated uptick in calls for help from Southern states. She hopes Florida voters will make the crisis short-lived.

“We’re estimating we’ll need an additional $100,000 a month to meet that influx of folks from Florida and the South,” she said. “We know it’s going to be a really hard eight months until something potentially changes.”

Losing access to abortion, especially among vulnerable groups like pregnant teenagers and women with pregnancy complications, could also increase cases of mental illness, such as depression, anxiety and even post-traumatic stress disorder, said Silvia Kaminsk y, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Miami.

Kaminsky, who serves as board president of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy , said the group has received calls from therapists seeking legal guidance about whether they can help a client who wants to travel for an abortion.

That’s especially true in states such as Alabama, Georgia and Missouri that have passed laws granting “personhood” status to fetuses. Therapists in many states, including Florida, are required to report a client who intends to harm another individual.

“It’s creating all these gray areas that we didn’t have to deal with before,” Kaminsky said.

Lakeland resident Deborah Dorbert said that Florida’s 15-week abortion limit put her health at risk and that she was forced to carry to term a baby that had no chance of surviving.

Her unborn child was diagnosed with Potter syndrome in November 2022. An ultrasound taken at 23 weeks of pregnancy showed that the fetus had not developed enough amniotic fluid and that its kidneys were undeveloped.

Doctors told her that her child would not survive outside the womb and that she had a high risk of a stillbirth and preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication that can result in high blood pressure, organ failure and death.

One option doctors suggested was a pre-term inducement, essentially an abortion, Dorbert said.

Dorbert and her husband were heartbroken. They decided an abortion was their safest option.

At Lakeland Regional Health, she said, she was told her surgery would have to be approved by the hospital administration and its lawyers since Florida had that year enacted a 15-week abortion restriction.

Florida’s abortion law includes an exemption if two physicians certify in writing that the fetus has a fatal fetal abnormality and has not reached viability. But a month elapsed before she got an answer. Her doctor told her that the hospital did not feel they could legally perform the procedure and that she would have to carry the baby to full term, Dorbert said.

Lakeland Regional Health did not respond to repeated calls and emails seeking comment.

Dorbert’s gynecologist had mentioned to her that some women traveled for an abortion. But Dorbert said she could not afford the trip and was concerned that she might break the law by going out of state.

“I had a 4-year-old child at home,” she said. “It’s not easy to just get out and go out of state, not knowing how long you’ll be away, and coming home with no baby and having to explain that to him.”

For 13 weeks, she carried the child she knew would not survive. She and her husband decided to keep that from their son.

“He continued to see my belly grow; he felt the baby move,” she said. “It was hard for us to see that knowing what was going to happen.”

At 37 weeks, doctors agreed to induce Dorbert. She checked into Lakeland Regional Hospital in March 2023 and, after a long and painful labor, gave birth to a boy named Milo.

“When he was born, he was blue; he didn’t open his eyes; he didn’t cry,” she said. “The only sound you heard was him gasping for air every so often.”

She and her husband took turns holding Milo. They read him a book about a mother polar bear who tells her cub she will always love them. They sang Bob Marley and The Wailers’ “Three Little Birds” to Milo with its chorus that “every little thing is gonna be alright.”

Milo died in his mother’s arms 93 minutes after being born.

His parents had him cremated and spread his ashes on a mountain in North Carolina. They started a gofundme campaign to raise money for medical expenses and his funeral costs.

One year later, Dorbert is still dealing with the anguish. The grief is still “heavy” some days, she said.

She and her husband have discussed trying for another child, but Florida’s abortion laws have made her wary of another pregnancy with complications.

“It makes you angry and frustrated. I could not get the health care I needed and that my doctors advised for me,” she said. “I know I can’t go through what I went through again.”
