Three Pickup Trucks Ace IIHS Crash Tests, Yet Many Aren't As Safe As They Should Be

The organization tested 11 full-size models and notes that pickup trucks are generally slower to adopt stronger safety measures than passenger cars.

Land vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Motor vehicle, Pickup truck, Automotive exterior, Truck bed part, Truck, Auto part, Commercial vehicle,

  • The Toyota Tundra scored the worst of all trucks, though many other trucks improved from the 2016 model year.
  • Results for the Ford Ranger will be released later this year.

UPDATE 7/1/19: The IIHS has released crash-test results for the 2019 Ford Ranger.

Honda sells the only 2019-model-year pickup truck in the United States that qualifies as an IIHS Top Safety Pick— the Ridgeline — even though the Ford F-150 , Ram 1500 , and Nissan Titan each aced all six of the group's crash tests. The reason? Their headlights weren't bright enough.

The F-150, Ram, and Titan all outperformed the Ridgeline in the small frontal overlap test on the passenger side, which subjects 25 percent of the vehicle's frontal area to a rigid barrier at 40 mph. But since the F-150's headlights were rated Poor and the Ram and Titan headlights got a score of Marginal, despite these trucks' best Good ratings in all crash tests and a Superior rating for their collision-avoidance systems, the Ridgeline took home the coveted Top Safety Pick trophy even though it only earned an Acceptable rating for the passenger-side overlap test. That's according to current IIHS criteria for earning awards. The Titan is currently ineligible, since it does not offer any frontal-collision warning or automated emergency braking.

The insurance organization's latest round of pickup crash tests evaluated 11 models and sometimes revealed staggering improvement from its tests of full- and mid-size trucks from 2016 and 2017. Every light-duty pickup with a crew-cab body was smashed and smashed again—except for the Ford Ranger, which IIHS could not obtain in time (results will be released in the coming months). Both the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 scored a low Marginal for the passenger-side frontal small-overlap test, as did their smaller mid-size twins, the Colorado and Canyon. The Toyota Tacoma, like the Ridgeline, scored a higher Acceptable in the same test.

Motor vehicle, Vehicle, Car, Automotive design, Product, Vehicle door, Crash, Automotive exterior, Family car, Minivan,

But Toyota's full-size Tundra was rated as one of the most unsafe trucks the IIHS evaluated. In the frontal tests, the Tundra was "seriously compromised by intruding structure," which is an engineer's way to explain that you're likely to be seriously injured by the Tundra's cabin compressing around your body. In the passenger-side test, the Tundra's footwell caved in 15 inches, compared to the F-150's five inches. It scored the worst rating of Poor. Plus, its A-pillar "intruded into the passenger's space," and the lower part of the B-pillar caved in more than a foot, IIHS said. The driver's score was slightly better at Marginal. Roof strength was also the weakest of any pickup tested.

Fender, Automotive tire, Vehicle door, Engine, Aircraft, Synthetic rubber, Tread, Vehicle brake, Machine, Motorcycle,

While the GM trucks scored better for the passenger-side tests, and dummy evaluations showed a lesser likelihood of injury, their body structure was still deemed Poor, as it was for the Tundra. Similarly, the Nissan Frontier scored Marginal for both driver and front passenger in the small-overlap tests and mustered an Acceptable for the seats and head restraints.

Still, pickups have improved dramatically in the small frontal overlap test since the 2016 model year , and that's arguably the toughest requirement to meet, as it puts tremendous force on the A-pillar and footwell areas. In 2016 testing, the Ram, Silverado, and Sierra were all rated Marginal for the driver. The Colorado and Canyon were rated Acceptable. In 2015, Ford sold two versions of its all-new F-150 in which the extended-cab version significantly compromised the safety of its passengers compared to the crew cab. Ford has since fixed the gap, although the organization has said it does not have the budget to run a full battery of tests on every extended-cab model (IIHS has tested four 2019 trucks with extended cabs but is missing data on certain metrics, such as roof strength and the frontal passenger-side small-overlap test). Trucks with single-cab bodies, as well as heavy-duty models, were not tested.

But the results are obvious: Just because you drive a hulking, heavy 4x4 in 2019 doesn't mean you or your passengers will walk out of a crash scot-free.

Russian Knights Accident Predicted... The Russian Knights commander, Col. Igor Tkachenko, seems to of predicted his own death. Col. Tkachenko had publicly commented on the poor state of the 4x Su-27P and 2x Su-27UB fighter jets recently, saying that the planes were in too poor a condition to be flown by a regular fighter squadron. He also said that the required maintnence was not being done and that the chances for something to go wrong were very high. There has always been complaints that the Su-27 is not the right fighter for demonstration team flying. The main reasons given by the pilots were the planes heavy weight, large dimension, inertness, peculiarities of the fly-by-wire control system and ,perhaps counterintuitively, its superior aerodynamic characteristics. Sadly, nothing was done and now another major accident involving the Knights has taken place. This time killing the team leader and injuring two other pilots and five civlians. Russia says that the MAKS 2009 airshow at Zhukovsky airfield will go on as scheduled.

What is certainly known is that Tkachenko quit his job shortly before the incident. Media reports claimed that the reason for this is the relocation of the Russian Knights training base from Kubinka near Moscow to Lipetsk. Apparently Tkachenko did not feel comfortable with leaving Moscow. No mention of maintenance issues were made in this article, published by avia.ru citing an Izvestya report on August 18. From all the reports I have seen so far (which wasnt much) no reason for the accident was mentioned. Observers of the area where one of the planes came down, mentioned unsual behavior of one of the Su's and that the pilot "could not do much about it except bailing out" but I am not sure if they were referring to the reason for the collision or what happend afterwards.

Haavarla said: ok.. Do you have a link to this poor maintanance report? This acident was pilot error i think. Thanks Click to expand...

I hate to say this but I hope it was mechanical and not pilot error.especially if its the pilot that survived thats just a bad deal all around. With out video footage they may never conclusively know what happened.:frown
