Fortune of War

Ratings and reviews, food and ambience, location and contact.

Situated in the heart of the rocks and just opposite the MCA this pub has an old world feel about it. If you go up the stairs you can get a good typical pub meal. Our bar man was really helpful and friendly and because... it wasn’t busy we got table service. The quinoa and beetroot salad was filling and tasteful. They do have live music as well so do check out their website for who is playing and when. Even though a lot of tourists come to the pub they do get a lot of locals and you always feel welcome. More

We visited the Fortune of War several times during our stay in Sydney and we were luck enough to it also being the closest to our hotel the Four Seasons,it was probably the sighting of a Guinness pump on the bar that first took us... in here and i'm glad it did, as we found this to be a great local with a good locals type atmosphere even though the majority were probably tourists. The music nights created a really nice atmosphere and had many up singing and dancing, the Guinness was also surprisingly excellent and none too dear as were the other drinks. We did also eat here on the one occasion and again the food was very good,i especially enjoyed the Guinness Stew and the wife was impressed with her Fish & Chips. I should also mention our waitress who hailed from Co. Kerry [sorry can't recall her name] she was excellent and gave us great service with a genuinely friendly way about her. More

Hi scaffolder1888, Thank you so much for taking the time to review the Fortune of War Hotel, Sydney’s Oldest Pub, in The Rocks. We were thrilled to read how much you enjoyed your time with us, especially our excellent Guinness, local vibe, live music and... More

We always try and get to the FoW for a cold beer when it Sydney - so much character. Friendly bar staff. Can get busy at times but worth hanging around until a seat comes free at the bar. The bistro at the back of... the FoW does good value "pub grub" - worth a try. More

Hi John & Les, Thank you so much for taking the time to review our lively pub in The Rocks. It’s great to hear how much of a good time you had and that we've become your go-to when in Sydney. The team and I... More

I have visited this pub numerous times over the last few years and always enjoy myself. It is lots of fun in the evenings with live music by Glenn Campbell and the bar tenders Jenn, Madison, Richard and others are a delight! The manager Chris... is fantastic also!! The food is fantastic relative to other options nearby and the kangaroo is delicious. Visit this pub for fun in a safe environment (oh, the security here is present and removes quickly anyone spoiling the fun). Can’t wait to come back! More

Hi chris92009, Thank you so much for taking the time to review our lively pub in The Rocks. It’s great to hear how much of a good time you had, especially listening to our live music and spending time with our team. We hope to... More

I can't tell you how ripped off I felt. I had booked on line to have dinner for three. Having arrived early we had multiple drinks outside but they insisted that if we ate outside they would keep the $50 deposit as well as the... food charge. Upstairs was anaemic, with no customers ... but their policy was really import to them. It was the same menu outside as I side but would not budge. They don't deserve your custom. More

Hi G9829IReddies, We do stick by our policy as there are very important reasons why we have this in place. However after speaking with our manager on duty the night of your booking, we would like to speak to you in relation to the conversation... More

When we first arrived in the Rocks, there was no eating place that could accommodate my multiple food intolerances until I found this place, who do delicious steamed seasonal veg and a delicious marinated grilled chicken breast. Absolutely fantastic and very reasonable. Nothing to fault... with the bar, kitchen or the lovely staff. More

Hi Kate, Thank you so much for taking the time to review your experience at our lively pub and family-friendly First Fleet Bistro in The Rocks, Sydney. We loved to read how much of a great time you had at the Fortune of War Hotel,... More

Over a year since I visited this quaint pub in The Rocks. First I’m happy to see they check everyone signs in with Covid App. Secondly, what a really pleasant, happy Jen is who served me. She didn’t know me but once she swiped my... loyalty card started to use my name. Really nice touch Jen, thank you, I’ll certainly return. Thirdly I took advantage of Service NSW free food vouchers. Chicken schnitzel and garlic bread was without fault, delicious and quite a large serving. Guinness was icy cold and moorish. In fact all the staff were really lovely when I visited Friday Thanks to everyone Tip: If you think you will keep returning ask about their loyalty card. More

Eight of us had a family reunion here recently and had a really enjoyable evening. It was very busy but we managed to get a table outside where it was relaxing and the atmosphere good. The food is your usual pub fare like burgers, fish... and chips, a pasta dish etc but everything we had was well cooked and tasty. We had minimum contact with staff since everything we ordered from drinks to food was done by QR Code table ordering but the staff who delivered our orders were friendly and very efficient in collecting empty plates and glasses. They have a good selection of wines and beers and prices for food and drinks reasonable considering the location. More

Thank you visiting Sydney's Oldest Pub @garbs006! We are pleased to hear you enjoyed our alfresco area, meals & atmosphere. We look forward to welcoming you back sometime soon.

Normally a favourite of my family, we were very disappointed with the level of service and sheer disrespect we received last Sunday. We are 4 elderly patrons who regularly have sunday lunch at this venue and generally we find the food and service very good.... Unfortunately, our last drinks order never arrived at our table, and after 20 minutes one of my group asked why. The duty manager was informed and subsequently came to our table and insisted that we had received the drinks ( 1 glass of rose, and a beer). One of our party made a remark disputing this and your manager very rudely responded that he would give us the drinks, but was also giving us a warning. I can only construe that he was implying that we were being untruthful and were trying to get some free drinks. Really, he was quite rude and his attitude quite unacceptable. His behaviour really upset us. I am sure that there are very many customers that behave badly and have to be ' warned', but to treat 4 people in their late 60's like this is disgusting. More

There is a small inside bar with few tables. Outside there are many more tables under cover. The beer selection is sufficient. The menu is typical. Service at the bar moves along nicely, but table service for food moves at a snails pace even with... few tables to serve. It took 20+ minutes to serve us two ordinary burgesr and fries. More

Have been here many times over the years and it has always been ‘ok’. We had just finished lunch nearby and decided to go for a walk. First stop Fortune of War for a Guinness. Sounds easy... try getting served! I walked in and stood... at the bar in an area marked ‘service area’. 3 staff all appearing to be busy. I won’t go into the long and boring details but the Lady serving could write a book ‘100 things to do to look busy so you don’t have to serve customers’. After far too long waiting and asking to be served while being actively ignored, our group went elsewhere, had a lovely afternoon, sat in the dum and spent our money with people who appreciated business in this environment. More

The last time I came here was 8 years ago. This time I was on my own and I decided to grab a quick beer before hopping on to the ferry to Manly from the Circular Quay. It being a Sunday afternoon in was quite... busy. And my request for a "best bitter" fell on the deaf ears of the young barmaid. She had to consult her colleague who promptly told her that would be Coopers. Anyway, she poured my drink (a schooner?) and I retired a safe distance from the bar on a rickety stool to sup it quietly. The place was full of a mixture of older, crinkly, bearded gents congregating around the bar area and oriental looking tourists looking a bit lost. Well, there was a big cruise ship tied up just outside in the harbour. Anyway, drinking on your own isn't so much fun so I didn't stay that long. And my ferry was just about to leave anyway. More

The Fortune of War is in George Street at The Rocks. It is the oldest pub in Sydney. The pub is not very wide, so space is limited in the front bar. The bistro is at the back and provides some good pub meals, which... are a little on the pricey side. There are many beers on tap, though again they are on the dearer side. The staff were very friendly and helpful. There are some wonderful old photos on the walls and it is a lovely experience having time in the pub. More

fortune travel sydney

We had the chicken parmesan, steak sandwich, and avocado mango salad. The salad was fresh and tasty. The steak sandwich was tasty but had a lot of mustard. We were disappointed in the fries. Fortune of War is Sydney’s oldest pub and the fries have... probably been there since they opened in 1828 because they tasted old af and were not hot. It was a bit of a different set up, because you order and pay through the QR code on your table and 3-4 servers go around bussing and bringing food and drinks to the tables. There was a self-serve area with a water jug and napkins. We didn’t have any internet so we just went inside to order at the bar. Other than the fries, the food was decent. More

fortune travel sydney

We are sorry to hear your chips weren't up to par & we hope our team replaced them on the day for you, we are however pleased to hear you enjoyed the rest of your meals & our lovely alfresco area!

This is a fun place to have lunch at. It is the oldest pub in Sydney so you get a taste of history, but food and beer are great too. Located on route of one of the Big Bus hop on - hop off lines... in historic district The Rocks, so you can get off the bus and get back on when you're done. More

Whether you're looking to save money on accommodation, food, or activities, there are plenty of ways to see Sydney on a budget.

With planning, you can enjoy all the city offers without spending a fortune. Here are some tips for stretching your budget when visiting the City of Sails.

Table of Contents

Accommodation To Fit Your Budget

This one might seem like a no-brainer, but when traveling on a budget, finding the right accommodation can be more difficult than you think. Here are a few things to keep in when sourcing cheap accommodation.

Try a hospitality swap

Free accommodation fits everyone's budget, so why not stay with someone who already lives in Sydney?

Websites like Couchsurfing and Home Exchange list residents willing to open their homes to travelers looking to immerse themselves in a new community.

Stay in a hotel and earn points

With so many hotels in Sydney , it's easy to source one that offers a reward program where you can earn points each time you stay.

It's a great way to experience a few more creature comforts while earning discounts and saving money on other travel expenses.

Book multiple nights

Many budget travelers are tempted to move from one hostel or hotel to another to find the best deal, but many places often get cheaper the longer you stay, so don't rule it out when booking.

If you're looking to save money while exploring all Sydney offers, one of the best things you can do is purchase a multi-day Opal pass for public transportation.

With a pass, you'll be able to use buses, trains, and ferries to get around the city, and you'll receive significant discounts on fares.

Additionally, many attractions in Sydney offer discounted or free admission for holders of a public transportation pass.

So not only will you save money on transportation costs, but you'll also be able to enjoy some of the city's most famous attractions without breaking the bank.

Whether you're visiting Sydney for business or pleasure, a multi-day public transportation pass is a great way to save money and see the city on a budget.

Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney, Australia (photo: Andy Wang)

It can be easy to blow your budget when there are so many fun things to do in Sydney. However, there are also plenty of free activities .

The Royal Botanic Gardens offer a serene oasis in the city's heart, with beautiful gardens to explore and plenty of picnic spots.

Hyde Park is perfect for a stroll or a game of frisbee, while the Art Gallery of New South Wales houses a world-class collection of artwork.

Whether you're looking to save money or experience some of Sydney's best attractions, take advantage of these free activities.

If you're visiting Sydney on a budget, there are plenty of ways to take advantage of discount offers from local businesses.

For example, many restaurants offer discounts for early diners, and many hotels offer reduced rates for booking in advance.

You can also often find discounts for attractions and activities, so it's worth researching before you travel.

If you're traveling on a budget, there are plenty of ways to save money without sacrificing your enjoyment.

Consider inexpensive activities like taking a walk or bike ride through one of Sydney's many parks or taking a ferry ride around the harbor.

And if you want to experience some of the city's nightlife, plenty of bars and clubs won't bust your budget. With a bit of planning, you can easily visit Sydney without spending a fortune.

The iVenture Card is a great way to save money when visiting Sydney on a budget.

With the card, you can get discounts of up to 50% off at over 60 attractions, including the Sydney Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the Sydney Zoo.

The card also includes unlimited public transportation, so you can quickly get around the city without spending a fortune on taxis or rental cars .

And if you're traveling with family or friends, the card can be used for up to four people so that you can enjoy the savings together.

So if you're looking for a way to stretch your travel budget, pick up an iVenture Card before your next trip to Sydney.

Sydney is a city that offers plenty of opportunities for budget travelers. With careful planning, you can see many of the sights and attractions that Sydney has to offer without mismanaging your budget.

From free walking tours to affordable accommodation and dining options, there are plenty of ways to enjoy this beautiful city without spending a fortune.

We asked Benjamin Stephens, the concierge of QT Sydney hotel, to plan us a single, spectacular day in Sydney …

More: See Fortune ’s interactive guide to Sydney here: A Concierge’s Black Book — Sydney

1. Breakfast at the Boathouse

I recommend you start your day with a seaplane from Rose Bay to Palm Beach, on the Northern Beaches. Head to the Boathouse for a breakfast on the back of the wharf for the best views.

2. Lunch on superyacht

After a flight back over the city, I would have the crew from my favorite superyacht, Oscar 2, meet you and take you around the harbor to see the best the city has to offer. After you anchor in a bay of your choice, the yacht’s executive chef, John Rankin, will prepare lunch on the top deck.

3. Shopping at Paddington

Afterward do some shopping, from the Queen Victoria Building to the higher-end labels of Paddington, with a personal driver.

Shoppers fill the Queen Victoria Buildin

4. 10-course dinner at Tetsuya’s

Retire to the State Suite at QT Sydney before dinner at Tetsuya’s—a 10-course experience that will show you the best in Japanese-French fusion cooking—followed by some top-shelf whiskey at Baxter Inn.
