Excellent tour guides. Excellent hotels for the price. Saw a lot of beautiful places. I was only disappointed that I booked a couple of excursions that did not take place. I still need to request a refund for them. Overall very worth it.

France, Spain and Portugal Tour

France, Spain and Portugal

Great see it all kind of tour. Albeit, demanding at times with its rigid schedule for departures and short turnarounds at some very interesting places. But we knew ahead of time what to expect considering all we saw and had to see. The best tour guide we had during all 17 days on this circuit was Luis Cebollada. He consistently went out of his way to accommodate requests and improve upon the cultural experience in each country. His knowledge of the sights and the people was insightful and very helpful during our tour. All and all...a memorable and unforgettable experience.

My husband and I loved our Portugal- Spain tour. There was plenty of free time and all of the group adventures were wonderful. Our CEO Beatriz Oubel went above and beyond to help every person on the tour. She was knowledgeable, helpful and never showed any signs of stress for the entire 21 days. She made the entire vacation better. We will definitely search out tour with her as CEO. Susan Mendes

Highlights of France and Barcelona (End Barcelona, 10 Days) Tour

Highlights of France and Barcelona (End Barcelona, 10 Days)

Giovanna was our tour director, she is very knowledgeable and caring, she has everything organized that we didn't have to worry about a thing, all we had to do is pack our suite case and show up on time. Our trip was packed with fun, great food, culture, and histories. It was very educational. Mario was our driver, he is a great driver, and he also prepared water, umbrella for us, which was totally unexpected. I left my charger on the bus, Mario took care of it, I can’t thank him enough! We stayed in the great hotels, most of them were in a central location, within walking distance to the town center, we had great breakfast every day, all the included dinner were awesome, great wine and cheese. Giovanna took us to many of the local festivals, market places, which were all very exciting, you just cannot stop going “wow, I have to try some!”. Our highlight of the trip was St Paul de Vence! That was a must do, don’t skip it, you will regret it! We had the best local tour director, she is funny and knowledgeable, she was the best local tour director out the whole trip. The only complaint I had was the Vincent van Gogh local tour director, she didn’t say much, which was disappointing, we saw her walking by while waiting for our tour, we had a bad feeling because we saw her leading a group people, just kept walking, did not say a thing. My tour mate said, “let’s hope not to get her!” sure enough, we got her. It was very hot day, I am sure she had a long day, but it was disappointing walking tour. We could have just see it by yourself. My advise to future travelers is to follow the tour, if you choose to do things on your own, you are at your own risks. The people who added own experiences, some had great experience, some had some exciting and adventure stories to share. Overall it was a fantastic trip!

Classic Spain Tour

Classic Spain

I really felt that this tour opened up almost the whole of Spain for me. We travelled from the middle to the south and then to the north and I was literally gobsmacked by the beauty of this country whether in the strikingly beautiful cities or the countryside…majestic mountains, unending olive orchards, vineyards and citrus trees…we passed through on our train and bus or private vehicle rides. Our CEO was fantastic and very supportive of everyone's needs, including one person who unfortunately fractured her ankle on the first day. On this tour, I saw so much of Spain and learned so much about the history and culture that my expectations were far surpassed. I highly recommend this tour.

Traveling to France and Spain: An Overview

Getting to either France or Spain to start your tour is rather easy, with many options available in terms of activities and transportation methods. Keep reading to get the full overview.

Getting From France to Spain

Getting to your starting destination for a France and Spain tour is simple, especially if you are traveling to Paris or Madrid to start your journey. Both capital cities have international airports with several modes of onward travel. For other starting destinations, you may need to take a connecting flight to a regional airport, such as Bordeaux, Bilbao, or Barcelona.

Alternatively, using the rail networks of both countries can easily link you with your starting destination. A Eurail pass will be your friend throughout your trip to Spain and France. For more relaxed slower-paced travel, rent a car to take things at your own pace on Spain and France’s scenic highways.

Best Time to Visit France and Spain

The best time for a Spain and France tour is in the late spring to summer months, anywhere from May until the end of September, when the weather is at its best. However, is also the peak season so those looking to avoid crowds might consider shoulder season or off-season instead.

For a seasonal guide, check out our article on the best time to visit France . Read our article and learn the month-wise information about the best time to go to Spain .

Highlights of France and Spain Tours

Beautiful coast of french riviera, France.

  • Explore the ancient beauty of the Basque country and take in the unique culture in locations across Southern France and Northern Spain such as Bayonne, Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Bilbao, and San Sebastian. Top attractions include La Concha Beach, San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, and the Bodegas Solar de Samaniego.
  • Take a sip of the very best wine of Spain and France by visiting vineyards and wineries in the famous regions of Rioja, Ribera Del Duero, Bordeaux, and Loire.
  • Go on a cultural journey and head to famous institutions such as the Louvre in Paris, and the Guggenheim in Bilbao, and learn about the stunning architecture of Gaudi in Barcelona.
  • Discover the rugged beauty of the Pyrenees, the natural border between France and Spain. Enjoy skiing in the winter months, or take a hike in warmer weather and be rewarded with spectacular views.
  • Have the perfect mix of countryside and coastline on tours of Southern France and Northern Spain with the rolling hills of Provence, Bordeaux, San Sebastian, and Perpignan, and the seaside views of Santander, Gaztelugatxe, and La Rochelle.

France and Spain Travel Tips

  • Take advantage of the Eurail Pass to travel through both Spain and France by train. Not only can you travel on the rail networks in both countries, but 33 other countries as well. Note that a Eurail Pass can only be used by non-European citizens or non-European residents. European citizens can use an Interrail Pass instead for the same price.
  • Smaller establishments in quieter or more rural towns and cities in France and Spain may not be able to take credit cards. Thankfully, both countries use the Euro so you don't need to carry two currencies with you!
  • Pack an adapter or converter for Europe for your cell phone, tablet, laptop, or other plug-ins. Don’t forget many countries have different size plugs and voltage. Europe runs on 220 volts (as compared to 110 volts in North America) and you might need an adapter for wall plugs.

Day-by-day itinerary

france and spain tours

Board your overnight flight to Paris today.

Bonne arrivée! After clearing arrivals, transfer from the airport to your hotel to recharge. This evening, join your fellow travelers at a local restaurant for a welcome dinner, served with beer or wine, and let your first impression of Paris leave you enchanté.

Ready to be dazzled by the City of Light? Begin your first full day in France with a tour of its splendid capital, Paris. With a local guide leading the way, you’ll get an overview of its most recognizable landmarks and a feel for the character of its arrondissements. (That’s French for “districts,” and it’s how Parisians refer to the city’s neighborhoods.)

  • Drive down the sycamore-lined Avenue des Champs-Élysées—an icon of France that’s lined with majestic monuments, glitzy restaurants, and glamorous storefronts. Continue to its western end and take in the magnificent Arc de Triomphe, originally built to commemorate one of Napoleon’s many conquests. A dozen different avenues spoke from this epic arch, making it Paris’ symbolic heart.
  • Pass the 16th-century Pont Neuf, the oldest stone bridge in Paris, and Notre-Dame Cathedral. Watching over its arrondissement from an island in the Seine River, this French Gothic masterwork is one of the city’s enduring sights.
  • Make a photo stop at the Eiffel Tower (you know this one!) before viewing the Palais Garnier opera house and the Place de la Concorde, the city’s grandest square.
  • Pass by the I.M. Pei-designed Louvre Pyramid—the grandiose glass gateway to the world’s preeminent art museum. Then, marvel at the Hôtel des Invalides: Erected in the 17th century and built to a height of roughly 350 feet, this gold-domed structure is the largest church building in all of Paris and serves as the final resting place of its greatest military leaders.

If you need a break from the buzz of this electric city, seek royal refuge by adding an afternoon outing to the Palace and Gardens of Versailles. You’ll encounter gilded walkways, fresco-adorned ceilings, and close to 2,000 acres of immaculate green space—all just a few miles west of Paris. Or, stay in town and use your free time to return to the Champ-de-Mars and savor a picnic in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.

Versailles Palace & Gardens

Begin your journey into French wine country by transferring to the Gare Montparnasse and boarding the TGV. (That stands for Train à Grande Vitesse—literally “high-speed train.” With speeds capping out at 200 mph, they really meant it!) After a zippy ride through landscapes that inspired France’s most virtuosic artists, arrive at your final destination: Bordeaux. Here, link up with a local guide for a tour of its Old Town and wade through over 2,000 years of history.

  • Begin in the Place des Quinconces, a 63-acre city square that ranks as one of the largest in all of Europe. At its core soars the Monument aux Girondins: Drenched in symbolism and protected by bronze sculptures of soldiers and horses, it memorializes local politicos who were executed during the Reign of Terror in the wake of the French Revolution.
  • Head into the UNESCO-listed Port de la Lune harbor district to see the Place de la Bourse: the “Stock Market Square,” centered on a reflecting pool that mirrors the neoclassical buildings framing the plaza. From there, cross the Pont de Pierre—the first bridge in Bordeaux to span the Garonne River—and stop on the Cours Victor Hugo. This stately avenue, named after one of the city’s most famous residents, is lined with historic buildings, funneling you to the Palais Rohan (Bordeaux’s city hall).
  • Trade the stark facade of the Palais Rohan for the opulent columns of the Grand Théâtre, Bordeaux’s opera house and the centerpiece of the Place de la Comédie. The city’s main streets converge on this lively square, making it an excellent place to people-watch.
  • Wrap up your guided tour by sampling local treats like merveilles (diamond-shaped beignets), canelés (caramelized pastries spiced with rum and vanilla), and bouchons de Bordeaux (almonds and grapes macerated in brandy and wrapped in thin dough).

Please note: Porterage isn’t included on train transfers. You should be comfortable lifting and carrying your luggage over steps, onto platforms, and into storage.

Wine is Bordeaux’s calling card for a reason, and Saint-Émilion produces some of its finest vintages. Explore this cute commune by sight and taste on today’s optional outing, or hang back and enjoy a free day in the city. Art lovers should check out La Base Sous-Marine. Built by the Axis powers during World War II, this Brutalist hulk originally functioned as a submarine base. Instead of subs, it now hosts the largest digital art center in the world.

Saint-Émilion, Bordeaux Wine Tasting & Lunch

From $149 per person

Before crossing into Spain, pay a visit to the resort town of Biarritz. Sitting on the Bay of Biscay just 22 miles from the Spanish border, it’s famous for its surf breaks and five-star hotels, and on this detour, you’ll get to snap some photos of its most impressive natural landmark: the Rocher de la Vierge. The “Rock of the Virgin” sprouts up from the water, connected to the mainland by a footbridge and watched over by a statue of the Virgin Mary. Walk through the ancient stone and bask in the coastal panorama playing out before you, then return to town for some free time to explore.

Once you’ve soaked up your fair share of sunshine, continue to your hotel in San Sebastián. Unwind for a spell, then reconvene in the evening for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Alongside Bilbao and Vitoria-Gasteiz, San Sebastián is a bastion of the Basque Country: a stretch of land running from Spain to France that boasts a distinct linguistic and cultural heritage. Today, get a taste of Donostia—as it’s known in Euskara, the Basque language—on a sightseeing tour, courtesy of a local guide. Pass by Playa de La Concha, named for its resemblance to a seashell, and make your way to the Old Town. Wander through Plaza de la Constitución and take a beat to gaze at the balconies of the buildings surrounding the square. (They once served as box seating for bullfights held in the plaza below.)

What Madrid and Barcelona are to culture, San Sebastián is to cuisine. After the morning’s sightseeing, you can extend your exploration by adding an optional walking tour and indulging in the local art of the pintxo crawl. Bounce from bar to bar, snacking on gildas (a potent combination of anchovies, olives, and pickled peppers), txistorras (cured sausage with a kick), and more. For all its culinary pedigree, some of San Sebastián’s best bites are its simplest; one taste’s all it takes to understand why.

If you’re fueled up and ready to explore some more, head north from the Old Town and set your sights on the Baluarte del Mirador. Set on the slopes of Monte Urgull, this observation deck crowns an old military fort. A five-minute walk from Plaza de la Constitución is all that separates you from end-to-end views of the Bay of Biscay.

San Sebastián Pintxos Walking Tour

From $85 per person

Today ends in Madrid—but before you arrive in Spain’s biggest city, head southwest from San Sebastián, detouring to Burgos. A provincial capital of the autonomous community of Castilla y León, it’s a major stop along the Camino de Santiago—the pilgrimage route known in English as the Way of St. James—and has the cultural cachet to match.

Stroll through the historic city center, following your guide through a weaving network of narrow lanes, and arrive at Burgos Cathedral. This imposing UNESCO World Heritage Site took close to 600 years to complete and incorporates elements of Romanesque, Renaissance, Baroque, and Gothic styles. It’s much simpler to see than visualize; step inside and feel the power of its awe-inspiring architecture. (The cathedral also happens to house the tombs of the medieval hero El Cid and his wife, Doña Jimena. Don’t worry: You’ll see them, too!)

Leave Burgos behind, driving due south to Madrid. Settle into your hotel and spend your evening how you’d like. May we suggest tracking down some churros con chocolate? For a satisfying snack after a day of travel, it’s hard to beat perfectly fried dough served with a cup of thick melted chocolate for dipping.

Spain’s beating heart, the cosmopolitan capital of Madrid has anchored the Iberian Peninsula since the 8th century A.D. It’s a massive place, but with the help of a local guide, you’ll get a comprehensive introduction.

  • View the Palacio Real. Backed up against the Manzanares, this 1,450,000-square-foot behemoth of a building—built in the Baroque and Classicist styles—is the largest royal palace in all of Europe.
  • Walk by the Plaza de España, distinguished by a stone monument honoring the writer Miguel de Cervantes, and pass the Templo de Debod. Donated to Spain by the Egyptian government in 1968, this ancient Nubian temple was taken apart, reassembled, and placed in a public park in the center of the city. (Needless to say, it’s one of Madrid’s most unexpected attractions.)
  • Check out Madrid’s many squares, including Plaza Colón and Plaza de Neptuno. The latter marks the approach to the day’s final stop: the Museo Nacional del Prado. Initially the private collection of the Spanish monarchy, this art museum has grown into a world-class attraction, filled with works by Francisco Goya, Diego Velásquez, and other masters. You could spend days exploring its many halls; even with a couple of hours, you could admire a treasure trove of art.

Tonight, celebrate your trip with your group during a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.

Transfer to the airport for your flight home. Not ready to say “adios” to Spain? Extend your stay by a few more days and tack Valencia—Spain’s modern coastal paradise—onto your itinerary.

For an extra helping of high culture, spend your free day in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza—a pair of museums that, together with the Prado, make up Madrid’s UNESCO-listed Golden Triangle of Art. For something more peaceful, amble through El Retiro Park—a huge swath of green space filled with ponds, rose gardens, and more.

Interested in ticking another UNESCO World Heritage Site off your list? Join our optional trip to Toledo—a multifaceted town revered for its swordsmithing and known as the “City of Three Cultures” for the way Christians, Jews, and Muslims peacefully coexisted there in the Middle Ages.

Ride your bus from your hotel to the Puerta de Atocha train station, where you’ll board an AVE high-speed train bound for seaside Valencia. Relax for the ride, then transfer to the city center and head out on a sightseeing tour with a local guide.

  • Begin with a photo stop at the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències—the Valencian name for the City of Arts and Sciences. Composed of three fantastical buildings, this cultural complex showcases modernist architecture at its finest.
  • See a trio of landmarks: the Torres dels Serrans, one of the few surviving pieces of the city’s ancient walls; the Mercat de Colom, a paragon of Valencian Art Nouveau design; and the Museu Nacional de Ceràmica i de les Arts Sumptuàries, an exhibition that celebrates the region’s millennia-long heritage of ceramic production.
  • Walk through El Carmen, a lovely district tucked away in the northwest of the Old Town, and make your way to the Llotja de la Seda—a UNESCO-listed structure and long-standing reminder of Valencia’s former status as a great mercantile city. Admire it in passing, then continue to the Plaça de la Verge, a marble-floored square made even more beautiful by the bordering Valencia Cathedral. (Some say this unique church, built atop an ancient Roman temple in the Valencian Gothic style, houses the legendary Holy Grail.)
  • Finish up with a horchata tasting—and not the kind you might be used to. In Spain, the drink is made with ground tiger nuts; known as horchata de chufa, it traces its origins back to North Africa.

Born in Valencia and beloved by the world, the humble paella has sustained generations of Spaniards. Learn how to make it yourself during today’s optional cooking class, then eat your fill in celebration. (Between perfectly seasoned rice and fall-off-the-bone meat, you’ll leave satisfied—trust us!) For a more low-key last day in Spain, grab a towel and lay out on La Malvarrosa. Deemed a Blue Flag Beach for its cleanliness and environmental protection, this pristine stretch of shore is everything a Mediterranean beach should be.

This evening, enjoy a farewell drink as you celebrate your trip with your fellow group members.

If you’re traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you’ll only need to complete the form once.
  • All Go Ahead travelers will be responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
  • If you aren’t a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact each country’s consulate for your specific entry requirements.

Physical Activity Level

This is a moderate physical activity-level tour. You can expect casual walks and plenty of time to explore throughout your trip.

Tour Pacing

This is a steadily paced itinerary. Tour pacing considers how often you’ll switch hotels, what you’ll do each day, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • Most transportation to be by motor coach.
  • Occasional transfers by train.
  • About 2–4 hours of bus time daily.

Walking, Terrain & Physical Considerations

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk 2–3 miles each day on paved roads, along cobbled streets, and up stairs and hills. Please note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking you do.
  • Cobblestone streets and marble walkways may be slippery even when dry.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • In Paris, temperatures range from 40 F in winter to 80 F in summer, with occasional heatwaves during the latter season.
  • Bordeaux experiences a Mediterranean climate: Temperatures range from the low 50s in winter to the low 80s in summer, with high humidity June–September.
  • San Sebastián’s coastal location helps regulate temperatures. In the winter, the thermometer will rarely dip below 50 F during the day; in the summer, it’ll rarely spike above 75 F.
  • Summers in Madrid get hot, with average highs close to 90 F. You can also expect heatwaves that push temperatures beyond that mark.

Physical Activity & Tour Pacing Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage-handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the whole group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The group can’t miss any activities because of the needs of an individual.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, wheelchairs and walkers will be difficult to use and aren’t recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring any mobility aids with you.
  • If you have mobility concerns or tour pacing questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team.

  • A train ride from Paris to Bordeaux is included in the price of your tour. The tour extension also includes a train ride from Madrid to Valencia.
  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.
  • European train stations typically operate similarly to airports: Security measures, such as baggage and body scanners, are common. Additionally, platforms are often spread across large distances and require travelers to carry their luggage up and down escalators or stairs. Porterage services aren’t offered and storage space is extremely limited. Please keep in mind that trains may only stop at each station for a few minutes; quick boarding and deboarding may be imperative.
  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one personal item each due to storage limitations on motor coaches and other transfers.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you’re responsible for any baggage fees incurred.
  • Contact your airline(s) for the baggage size and weight restrictions on your flights.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.

  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It’s preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders. Entrance may be denied on this basis.
  • We recommend packing a reusable water bottle to cut down on single-use plastic waste.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using a hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • In case of emergencies, we also recommend packing your medical insurance card in your carry-on.
  • Please note: Porterage isn’t included on train transfers, and storage space is extremely limited. You should feel comfortable lifting and carrying your bags over steps, onto platforms, and into storage. To make things easier, we recommend traveling with one suitcase and personal item (e.g. a backpack or purse) per person.
  • Go Ahead handpicks every hotel you’ll stay at, striking a balance between comfort, location, and local charm.

  • Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather, or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you’ll be refunded the full cost of the excursion. (It may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.)
  • Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions, which can only be purchased on tour, in cash, in the local currency.
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website at cdc.gov .

  • In Spain, breakfast like a local with just a pastry and coffee. Then, tuck into a three-course lunch featuring Spanish staples like savory seafood paella or grilled meat and fried potatoes. Dinner is less hearty than lunch and is served late, between 9pm and midnight. Snack on small plates (tapas) any time of day.
  • In the Basque Country, pintxos—small, tapa-style snacks that’re spiked to a piece of bread with a toothpick—are especially popular.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it’s customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in local currency. Please keep current exchange rates in mind.

Late afternoon in Aigüestortes national park.

Five of Europe’s best national parks – with all the beauty but none of the crowds

Offering exquisite scenery, rare wildlife and spectacular trails, these under-the-radar national parks are worth tracking down

Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici , Spain

There is a wild and wonderful water world in the north-eastern corner of Spain. The Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici national park , in the central Pyrenees north of Lleida, is characterised by more than 200 lakes fed by melting snow and ice, plus rivers and streams, gorges, waterfalls and marshes. ( Aigüestortes means “winding waters” in Catalan, and Sant Maurici is the biggest lake.)

Visitors can explore by bike – there are 13 routes, from flat family paths to challenging mountain biking. There are also 27 hiking trails with spectacular viewpoints over the lakes, which reflect the surrounding forests and mountains. These include Los Encantados, a pair of near-identical peaks. Wildlife includes bearded vultures and grouse, one of the emblems of the Pyrenees.

In the Vall de Boi , eight Romanesque churches and a hermitage, all built in the 11th and 12th centuries, are characterised by tall narrow bell towers. It is possible to visit them all in a day, walking between the villages. After that, walkers can relax in Caldes de Boi thermal spa , which is set in large gardens and has 37 natural springs.

June and July are among the best times to visit, to experience the Fallas festivals. In these centuries-old midsummer rituals enormous torches are carried down the mountains into the villages, where a great bonfire is lit and the party begins. This year, the dates are 14 June in Durro, 23 June in Boí, 6 July in Barruera, 13 July in Erill la Vall, 19 July in Taüll and 26 July in el Pla de l’Ermita.

Accommodation includes the Aigüestortes Camping Resort (from €25 for a pitch for two) and a network of mountain refuges , including Amitges (€40 B&B). Wild camping is not allowed. There are daily coach services from Barcelona, Lleida and Tremp to most of the villages around the park, and from June to September a park bus connects the two main entrances, Boi and Espot.

Mercantour, France

Lac de Trécolpas, Mercantour national park.

In the far south-east corner of France, between the southernmost Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, lies the Mercantour national park . Half a dozen uninhabited valleys stretch for 100 miles, from Barcelonnette to Sospel, with scattered villages around the periphery. This diverse landscape, from almost alpine to coastal, provides a habitat for a huge range of wildlife. Of more than 2,000 species of flowers and plants, 200 are rare and 30 endemic; there are 200 kinds of bird, including golden eagles and ptarmigans, and 78 mammals, including wolves, marmots and all six French ungulates (stag, deer, wild boar, ibex, chamois and mouflon).

One unmissable spot is the Valley of Wonders, a huge archaeological site of about 40,000 rock carvings, with the oldest dating to around 3,000BC. They depict daily life and beliefs, with engravings of cattle, weapons and geometric figures. Other highlights include the glacial lakes of Vens, which feed a series of waterfalls, and Lake Allos, the biggest high-altitude natural lake in Europe.

A rock carving in the Valley of Wonders.

For hikers there are more than 1,000 miles of trails (about 350 miles in the heart of the park), from gentle walks in meadows and woodland to strenuous mountain treks – the highest peak, Gélas, is 3,143 metres.

A website for hikers details more than 100 day walks, about 20 itineraries of between two and seven days, and the 17-day, 140-mile Grande Traversée du Mercantour. It also lists accommodation from hotels to campsites. Mountain refuges offer dormitory beds and shared meals: they include La Cantonnière , Refuge des Lacs de Vens , Refuge de la Cougourde and Chalet de la Madone de Fenestre (from €20pp). Wild camping in tents is banned, but bivouacs are allowed between 7pm and 9am.

Lots of visitors choose to stay in one of the towns along the main road that passes to the south of the park, such as St-Martin-de-Entraunes, St-Sauveur-sur-Tinée, St-Etienne-de-Tinée and St-Martin-Vésubie.

Car-free travel is encouraged: there are daily buses from Nice, Monaco and Menton to each valley, and intra-valley shuttles, plus a tourist train line from Nice that calls at several villages. In the summer, there are dedicated buses for hikers, also from Nice.

Eifel, Germany

Eifel national park at night, with lights in the distance between two bits of land sloping into the water

Strictly speaking, the Eifel national park in North Rhine-Westphalia, in far-west Germany, is still classed as “in development” – it was founded 20 years ago, and it will take another 10 years for 75% of the land to return to nature. But more than half the area has already been rewilded. Beech and oak trees that would once have been felled are now left as undisturbed woodland, and animals such as wild cats, woodpeckers, red deer, and rare lizards and bats have returned. There is a red deer observation gallery near Dreiborn – September and October are the best times to visit, to observe the rutting season. The rivers attract black storks and kingfishers, and wild daffodils can be found on the Dreiborn Plateau. At the birdwatching station on Lake Urftsee, there are two telescopes to watch the black storks, red and black kites, herons and cormorants.

One of the best ways to explore the park is on the four-day, 53-mile Wilderness Trail . Visitors can walk it independently or book a package , which includes three nights’ B&B and transfers by bus and train (from €269pp). There are also five shorter hiking circuits (from three to 11 miles each); 65 miles of cycle paths; and 40 miles of bridleways. Free ranger tours take place most days, and there are boat tours in the summer.

In 2014, Eifel became the first international dark sky park in Germany. The Vogelsang observatory organises regular astronomy workshops and dark sky walks. Historical sites include Monschau Castle, Steinfeld Monastery and Mariawald Abbey.

About 30 national park hosts offer environment-friendly stays, including two campsites and nine hostels. Overnight guests are entitled to the GästeCard , which provides free travel on buses and trains in the Eifel national park discovery region, stretching from the border with the Netherlands at Aachen to Cologne, Bonn and Leverkusen.

Risnjak, Croatia

Lokvarsko Lake in Croatia’s Risnjak national park.

The mountainous, forested Risnjak national park is named after one of its rarest residents, the lynx – ris in Croatian. It contains the Risnjak and Snježnik massifs in the northern part of the Dinaric Alps and is an important habitat for brown bears, wolves and chamois. Birds include capercaillie and pygmy owl; 89 species of butterfly have been recorded, and a variety of wild orchids grow there.

Visitors can walk to the source of the Kupa river, a bright turquoise pool, via Wonderful Butterfly Valley (35 minutes); follow the Leska educational path to learn about the park (three miles), or climb 11 peaks – Risnjak is the highest at 1,528 metres, with Snježnik just behind at 1,506 metres. Panoramic views stretch across Istria – the Adriatic is just 11 miles away – and as far as the Julian Alps in Slovenia. In the summer, there are guided chamois-spotting tours (from €65 for five hours). Cycle routes range from 2½ to 25 miles ( mountain bike hire is from €4 for three hours/€12 for 24 hours). Fly fishing for brown trout and grayling is allowed from spring to autumn (€55 a day).

Only about 60 people still live in the park. Limited accommodation includes a guesthouse and a hostel in the mountain village of Crni Lug (beds from €13), a mile from the main entrance, and a refuge below the Risnjak summit, built by botanist Josip Schlosser in 1932. There are more options in Delnice, the nearest town (eight miles away), and even more in Rijeka, the nearest city, on the coast about 100 minutes’ drive away.

Buses run from Delnice and Rijeka to Crni Lug, or it is a 90-minute drive from Zagreb. The entrance fee is €6 adults/€3 children.

Peneda-Gerês, Portugal

Peneda-Gerês is famous for its pools and rivers.

There is only one national park in Portugal: Peneda-Gerês , in the far north-west, near the border with Spain. Luckily, it has a bit of everything: mountains, oak forests, holly-bush woods, wildflower meadows, peatlands, rivers and waterfalls. It is home to endemic species such as the gold-striped salamander, endangered species including the Iberian wolf and Iberian wild goat, plus roe deer, wild garrano ponies, barrosã cattle and sheepdogs.

There are about 15 official day walking trails ranging from a couple of kilometres to a 16-mile circular trek taking in a megalithic necropolis and a birdwatching plateau. Other routes go via medieval castles, monasteries and sanctuaries. But the ultimate way to explore the park is on the GR50 , a 120-mile, 19-stage route along Roman roads, pilgrims’ ways and smugglers’ trails. The GR50 crosses the hills of Castro Laboreiro, the mountains of Peneda, Soajo, Serras Amarela and Gerês, and the Mourela Plateau. Each stage ends at a village – about 9,000 people live in the park – with simple lodges and guesthouses to stay in.

On shorter trips, visitors could combine a stage or two with some canoeing or canyoning. The super-fit could run it: there is a trail-running event in May with races over five distances from 10 to 100 miles.

The easiest way to reach the park on public transport is by bus from Braga to the town of Gerês, a five-minute walk from one of the five park gates.

Latest Foreign Office travel advice for France, Spain, Turkey and Italy

T he Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), provides information and guidance about risks of travel to any of 226 nations and territories in a bid to help people make informed decisions and stay safe.

The Government department's updates can include things like security risks, passport and visa requirements, and health warnings, and it is important to be aware of the latest guidance.

Ahead of what is likely to be a very busy year for international travel, we have taken a look at all the latest travel advice for France, Spain, and other destinations that are popular with UK travellers.

While there are no enforced covid requirements in France at the moment, Gov.UK guidance states: "You’re strongly recommended to wear a face mask in health settings. In some areas, people aged 6 and above may need to wear a face mask."

As with all EU countries, your passport must be issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country - so you should check the "date of issue" - and be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave (check the "expiry date").

If your passport was issued before 1 October 2018, extra months may have been added to its expiry date.

On arrival in France you may need to show border control staff proof of where you intend to stay, for example a hotel booking, as well as proof of travel insurance, a return or onward ticket, and proof you have enough money for your whole stay.

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area, which France is part of, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa.

You cannot take food items such as meat and dairy to France from the UK, though there are some medical exceptions which include certain amounts of powdered infant milk and infant food. You can find out more about this here.

The FCDO says terrorists are "very likely" to carry out attacks in France and advises UK travellers to be vigilant at all times. It adds that attacks could take place in areas such as shopping centres, entertainment establishments, on public transport, and at places of worship.

Foreign Office advice also warns there can be "frequent industrial action across France", which can lead to delays and disruption especially on public transport. It adds: "If you’re due to travel to or within France, monitor the media, check your operator’s advice and follow the advice of the authorities."

A further warning reads: "Thieves and pickpockets operate on the Paris underground, RER lines and at mainline stations" while people with a British driving licence who plan on driving while in France are reminded: "You may need a UK sticker to drive your car outside the UK.

"These have replaced GB stickers. Check the guidance on displaying number plates if you are driving outside the UK."

There are currently no covid rules for Spain, according to the FCDO, and as with France your passport must be issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country, and be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave.

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area, which Spain is part of, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. To stay longer, to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons, you need to meet the Spanish government’s entry requirements.

Border control staff may ask for proof you have enough money for your stay and confirmation of your accommodation - which may be a hotel booking, or a carta de invitation completed by your hosts.

People planning to travel between Spain and Gibraltar are warned over delays due to border checks, with FCDO advice adding: "There is no charge to enter or leave Gibraltar. You should not hand over money to anybody claiming there is a charge."

You cannot take food items such as meat and dairy to Spain from the UK, though there are some medical exceptions which include certain amounts of powdered infant milk and infant food. You can find out more about this here.

The FCDO says terrorists are "likely" to carry out attacks in Spain and advises UK travellers to "stay aware of your surroundings" at all times. Of Spain's "political situation", the government department adds: "Demonstrations, political gatherings or marches can take place with little or no warning, particularly in cities. Follow the advice of police and local authorities.

"While most demonstrations are peaceful, there is a risk of unrest or violence. If you’re in and around areas where demonstrations are taking place, be aware of what is happening around you and move away if there are signs of disorder."

Travellers are also advised to protect their belongings and "be alert to street crime" although "most visits to Spain are trouble-free". Advice states: "Take care of your passports, money and personal belongings" and suggests people keep a photocopy or scanned copy of their passports in a safe place.

When it comes to alcohol, UK travellers are reminded: "You cannot drink alcohol in the street in some areas of Spain. You can be given an on-the-spot fine.

"There are strict controls on drinking and sexual activity in public places, including on beaches."

Local laws limit the sale and availability of alcohol in areas of some resorts on the islands of Mallorca and Ibiza, prohibiting drink promotions such as happy hours, open bars, and off licence sales between 9.30pm and 8am.

Hotels and other establishments are obliged to evict customers who behave dangerously on balconies. Both the customer and the establishment can be fined for such behaviour.

People planning on driving while in Spain are reminded: "You may need a UK sticker to drive your car outside the UK. These have replaced GB stickers. Check the guidance on displaying number plates if you are driving outside the UK."

The FCDO advises against travel within 10km of Turkey's border with Syria, and against all but essential travel to Sirnak and Hakkari province.

If you are visiting Turkey, your passport must be valid for at least 150 days from the date you arrive and have a full blank page for entry and exit stamps. You only need a visa if you plan on staying longer than 90 days in any 180-day period.

The FCDO says terrorists are "very likely" to carry out attacks in Turkey and advises UK travellers to be vigilant at all times. It adds that attacks could take place in areas such as shopping centres, entertainment establishments, on public transport, and at places of worship.

Of the nation's "political situation", it adds: "Occasional demonstrations can occur in cities and may become violent. Police have used tear gas and water cannon to disperse protests.

"Occasional demonstrations can occur in cities and may become violent. Police have used tear gas and water cannon to disperse protests."

It also warns that "street robbery and pick-pocketing are common in the major tourist areas of Istanbul", and advises people always make sure their personal items are secure.

The FCDO says that 42 cases of sexual assault were reported to British consular staff in Turkey in 2023, adding: "Most sexual assault cases reported to British consular staff in Turkey have happened during summer holidays in coastal tourist areas.

"Many were committed at night by someone the victim met during the day, including hotel workers. There have also been sexual attacks on minors visiting toilet facilities alone. Be extra vigilant in these situations."

A stray dog warning is listed for Turkey, as packs "congregate and can be aggressive". People are advised to take care and not to approach any dogs.

Guidance adds: "If you’re bitten, get medical advice immediately. Rabies and other animal borne diseases are present in Turkey."

You must carry a green card if you plan to drive while in Turkey. More information can be found here.

There are no covid requirements for Italy however if you are visiting a hospital intensive care ward or a car home, you must wear a FFP2 mask.

As with travel to all other EU nations, your passport must be issued less than 10 years before the date you enter the country, and be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave.

You can travel to countries in the Schengen area, which Italy is part of, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. To stay longer, to work or study, for business travel or for other reasons, you need to meet the Italian government’s entry requirements.

Border control staff may ask for proof you have enough money for your stay and confirmation of your accommodation, as well as proof of travel insurance and a return or onward ticket.

You cannot take food items such as meat and dairy to Italy from the UK, though there are some medical exceptions which include certain amounts of powdered infant milk and infant food. You can find out more about this here.

The FCDO says terror attacks in Italy "cannot be ruled out" and advises UK travellers to "remain vigilant at all times." Of Italy's "political situation", the government department adds: "Demonstrations may occur with little or no warning in cities. Avoid any protests, political gatherings, or marches."

People are advised that crime levels are "generally low" but that petty crime such as bag snatching and pickpocketing is more common in big cities such as Rome and Milan.

It adds: "Robberies from parked cars have been reported, in Rome, particularly the Colosseum area, Ostia, Milan and Pisa. Coastal areas and towns have been targeted as well as motorway service stations. Always lock your vehicle, never leave valuables in cars and avoid leaving luggage in cars for any length of time."

The government department also warns travellers that some Italian towns and cities have specific local laws. These may see you fined for actions such as dropping litter, sitting on monument steps, and eating or drinking next to churches or other historic buildings.

Gov.uk advice adds: "It’s also an offence to enter or bathe in public fountains in many towns and cities, including Florence and Rome. A fine of up to 10,000 euros can be imposed for urinating in a public place."

You must also not take any disposable plastic items, such as bags, cups or places, onto the island of Capri. If you are caught doing so you can be fined up to 500 euros.

People should also only use licensed taxi drivers, the FCDO has said, and that these "should be called or taken from an official rank rather than hailed in the street".

Europe's Most Spectacular New Hotel Is Set in a Former WWII Railway Station

High in the mountains between Spain and France, a long-neglected train station has become an opulent hotel.

Simon Willis is a contributing writer for Travel + Leisure. For the magazine he has crisscrossed Europe, Asia and Latin America. Particularly drawn to remote places, he has filed features from Patagonia, Laos and the Southern Ocean among other destinations.

Denisse Ariana Pérez

A few years ago , I was flicking through a magazine when I saw a photo essay about abandoned train stations. They were images of sublime squalor. The grand Greco-Roman columns of Michigan Central Station in Detroit were covered with graffiti. The Art Deco posters on the walls of the St.-Martin Métro in Paris were gradually peeling away. But the most haunting place in the collection was Estación Canfranc, high in the Spanish Pyrenees.

From the outside, this 790-foot-long Beaux-Arts palace looked like it had been transplanted from a fashionable Parisian boulevard. When it was completed in 1925, Canfranc was the second-largest rail station in Europe, after the one in Leipzig, Germany. Inside, the structure had cathedral-like proportions, as though it had been erected not merely to facilitate train travel but to worship it. Huge arched windows let in shafts of beneficent light. The ticket counter could almost pass for an altar. But by the time the photo essay was published, the congregation was long gone. The building closed in 1970 and had been empty ever since. Its vaulted ceiling was slowly moldering, and the floor was covered in dust and debris.

Now the travelers are back. One recent afternoon I arrived in Canfranc to check in to the station, which has been transformed into one of Europe’s most spectacular new hotels. Its scale and grandeur are incongruous, given that Canfranc is a remote mountain hamlet near the border of Spain and France. The town, which sits in a narrow valley enclosed by steep, forested slopes, has a population of only 600.

After the station closed, Canfranc lured only a trickle of adventure lovers, drawn by glorious summer hiking and two tiny ski resorts farther up the valley. But today, the hotel is a destination in itself. The renovation is the work of the Barceló Hotel Group, who took over the derelict building in 2021. The Spanish firm has given the place a train-centric revamp that balances old-world glamour with contemporary style. As I checked in, I stood gaping at the old ticket hall, which now serves as the hotel lobby. Its polished wooden beams shone with a deep luster, and the ornate plasterwork on the walls was as clean and white as confectioner’s sugar.

When it was completed in 1925, Canfranc was the second-largest rail station in Europe, after the one in Leipzig, Germany. Inside, the structure had cathedral-like proportions, as though it had been erected not merely to facilitate train travel but to worship it.

In the station’s locomotive heyday, its north and south wings were occupied, respectively, by French and Spanish customs officials. Now the southern wing houses a bar and restaurant tricked out in Art Deco shades of green and gold; the bar is illuminated by pendant lamps that resemble train wheels. In the rooms, antique station windows have been refurbished as quirky wall art.

Yet the hotel’s brand of nostalgic luxury is only one reason to visit; the other is its history. The village of Canfranc may be tiny and remote, but its border location has given it an outsize strategic importance for centuries. The evidence is everywhere. After I arrived at the hotel I headed outside and looked north up the valley. Perched on a ridge high above me was a 16th-century fortress that the Spanish rebuilt after Napoleon’s invasion in 1808; they wanted to defend against another possible incursion through this mountain pass. At the other end I could see concrete bunkers, erected for the same reason by the Franco regime in 1944. As well as being a luxurious stop on the route between Paris and Madrid, the station has played a prominent role in the valley’s history of intrigue and espionage.

Later that afternoon, I met with Ana Badino and Marcelo Boveri, an Argentine couple who moved from Madrid to the Canfranc region in 2020 to enjoy a quieter life in the mountains. Since then, they have immersed themselves in the station’s extraordinary history and now run tours around the valley.

Until the 20th century, this corner of northern Spain was seen as poor and backward. The main economic activity was smuggling: alcohol and cigarettes went from Spain to France, and clothes, clocks, tea, and embroidery went the other way. But the locals wanted more opportunity than contraband provided, and the government wanted to take this roguish part of the country and turn it into a legitimate, modern commercial hub. So in 1912, the government commissioned the station as a statement of ambition and advancement. Fernando Ramírez de Dampierre, a Madrid-born engineer, was hired to design it. Both the president of France and the king of Spain were present at the inauguration ceremony in 1928.

For a few years, life in Canfranc was full of commercial activity. Daily trains from Portugal delivered port wine, cocoa, and coffee imported from Brazil. Industrial goods like coal and aluminum arrived from France. Badino and Boveri pointed out the rusted, obsolete cranes behind the station; they once loaded and unloaded this cargo.

But when war broke out in 1939, everything changed. As Bodina and Boveri explained, the head of the station’s French customs department was a man named Albert Le Lay. He was more than a mere border official. He was a vital member of the French resistance who used his position at the station to help Jews and allied fighters fleeing persecution and capture in Germany and Vichy France. Now remembered as an Oskar Schindler–like figure, Le Lay provided these fugitives with forged papers to help them cross into Spain and on to Portugal. From there they traveled to safety. The identities of Le Lay’s beneficiaries are hard to trace, but according to some historians, those who passed through Canfranc included Max Ernst and Peggy Guggenheim.

Bodina and Boveri led me a little farther down the valley, which is still crisscrossed by old railway lines. Eventually we came to a row of derelict warehouses, their heavy wooden doors bent and buckled from decades of neglect, their roofs full of holes where high winds had ripped the tiles away. Through the gaps we peered into the dark interiors. In one of the buildings, in 2000, a cache of Nazi paperwork was found that listed items the Germans had moved through Canfranc after the Gestapo occupied the station in 1942. They included looted gold bars and opium.

His job as a customs official gave Le Lay the cover he needed to continue his resistance work. He would receive information from agents masquerading as passengers as they arrived at the station. From there, messages were transported by a network of spies down the train line to Zaragoza, the nearest city. Canfranc, then, was a crucial node in a pan-European network of spies that helped disrupt the German war machine.

Like many travelers to Canfranc today, I arrived via the airport in Zaragoza, the regional capital. Zaragoza is an underrated destination compared with Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville. Following the Umayyad invasion from North Africa in the eighth century, it became a major city in the north of Muslim Spain. At its center is a Moorish fortress, the Aljafería Palace, which is built in a magnificent architectural fusion of European and Islamic styles known as Mudejar. On the bank of the Erbo River, which courses through Zaragoza, stands a monumental Baroque basilica whose central dome is surrounded by four towers. But for me, the biggest lure was the opportunity to admire the art of the area’s most famous son, Francisco Goya.

After spending the night at the NH Collection Gran Hotel de Zaragoza, I walked over to the Goya Museum. It’s a small institution that packs a big punch. The star attractions are Goya’s etchings, displayed in a large, crepuscular room that protects these delicate artworks from light damage.

Goya’s etchings rank among his strangest and most personal pieces. “Los Caprichos,” a series of 80 prints, is a pitch-black satire on religious hypocrisy, corruption, and superstition. These images feature grotesque goblins dressed as clergymen; a donkey in an aristocrat’s silk coat studying his family tree; a woman pulling teeth from the mouth of a hanged man to be used as lucky charms. In another series, “The Disasters of War,” the devilish comedy of “Los Caprichos ” is replaced by documentary horror. The etchings captured the violence of conflicts like the Peninsular War, which ravaged Spain between 1808 and 1814.

From Zaragoza I drove two hours across the tinder-dry plains of northern Spain to Jaca, a compact city with a Romanesque cathedral. It dates from the 11th century, when the king of Aragon decided to turn his territory into a stopping point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela, 500 miles to the west. Pilgrimage was good business: you had to be wealthy to take several months off work and pay your way across Europe. Jaca did well from the foot traffic. In the Middle Ages, the road outside the cathedral passed 16 shoe shops.

After a meal of venison carpaccio at a small restaurant, La Cocina, I drove into the mountains to Canfranc. Having been cooped up in the car, I wanted to explore the landscape, so the following morning I met up with Fernando Garrido, a wiry mountain guide with silver hair and a deep tan. Garrido, a partner in a Jaca-based company, Aragon Aventura, is a serious mountaineer. For 30 years he has held the world record for spending the most time at high altitude: he stayed, alone, for two months straight on the summit of Mount Aconcagua, in Argentina, at an altitude of more than 22,000 feet.

Thankfully, our plan was more down to earth. It was a blue and shimmering Sunday, and we decided to head to Ordesa & Mount Perdido National Park, a 90-minute drive southeast of Canfranc. We hiked into a deep canyon, following the course of a river that had been reduced to a slow trickle by a two-month drought. The canyon’s sheer limestone walls rose almost 3,000 feet, and birds of prey circled on the thermals.

Yet the hotel’s brand of nostalgic luxury is only one reason to visit; the other is its history. The village of Canfranc may be tiny and remote, but its border location has given it an outsize strategic importance for centuries. The evidence is everywhere.

As we walked, Garrido pointed out the fajas, the narrow paths that run along the cliff edges. Looking at the thin lines they traced across the rock, I couldn’t help thinking about those wartime refugees I had heard about in Canfranc. During the German occupation, the route became more perilous, and despite Le Lay’s help, many were arrested at the station. In hopes of avoiding the authorities, thousands walked across the Pyrenees on foot, clinging to these narrow, cliff-edge paths as they searched for safety.

That night, I sat down to dinner at Canfranc Estación’s Restaurant Internacional, which is run by Eduardo Salanova and Ana Acín. Chef Salanova’s food is a fusion of local ingredients and avant-garde presentation. That evening’s 15-course tasting menu included foie gras with strawberries, local caviar, a terrine poached in mulled wine, and sous-vide eggs. (Another restaurant, Canfranc Express, opened after my visit in a restored train car outside the hotel, and has since been awarded a Michelin star.)

As I ate, a fog descended over the valley and a gentle rain began to fall. Through the window I could see the silhouettes of Canfranc’s old cargo warehouses and, beyond them, the wooded hillsides. Sitting there in the warm glow, I thought back to the stories my Argentine guides had told me — about the secret agents running messages through this building, about the villagers sewing notes into the linings of their clothes to protect them from the Gestapo. The setting was worthy of a wartime spy thriller, and as I sat in the opulent dining room I imagined myself waiting not for my dessert to arrive but for a tap on the shoulder from a clandestine contact bearing important papers and, along with them, a chance of freedom.
