Best Food Tour In Penang Review

On my most recent trip, I did the Eat Drink George Town tour . All my experiences here are based on this tour.

My tour started at Masjid Kapitan Keling in George Town. This is the main mosque in this area, and it was built in 1801 by Indian Muslims.

The tour started with the fabulous guide, Lee, introducing herself and helping me and the other five participants (from four different continents!) get to know each other. Everyone was very friendly and it made for an enjoyable tour.

Masjid Kapitan Keling was a great starting point. We started by going inside for a quick tour. Even if you don’t do this Penang street food tour, I recommend you do the tours available here. I felt like I learned more about praying and the daily routine of Islam in 15 minutes than I ever have before. We were able to borrow gowns to wear, so it you don’t need to dress a special way to visit here.

Next up, we stopped by a Chinese clan house and temple and learned about how they work. We stopped by a few other Chinese clan houses throughout the tour. It was very interesting.

We walked down Armenian Street and learned more about the history of this area, stopping at Penang’s famous street art along the way.

In the first half hour, I learned more about George Town than I did in a year of living here. I was already wishing I had done a food tour then!

Soon enough, we were at our first food stop. I had only eaten half an ice kacang this day ready for all the great food so I was particularly excited to get started with the food.

It was a super strong start with the most delicious chicken satay I have ever had. The sauce was amazing… Just perfect!

We also had some Chinese tea to help with digestion and learned some more about tea in Chinese culture. It was all topped off with a gyoza (Japanese dumpling).

When we came out of this stop, I was happy to find there was a nice breeze, and it didn’t feel anywhere near as hot as it had at the start of the tour. It mostly was very pleasant walking around George Town at this time.

We walked around learning more about George Town’s UNESCO listing, why they have it and what it means as well as learning about the different areas of the city. We checked out more street art and enjoyed the city’s architecture.

We made our way to Little India where I particularly enjoyed our stops.

I LOVE Indian food. It’s my favourite cuisine in the world, so I am very biased. But this also means I have eaten a lot of Indian food in my life and these stops were right up there.

We started in the Hindu Indian area eating there and then tried the Muslim area. Little India is also a great place to wander which adds to food tours in Penang thanks to the smell of spices, the bright colours, the music – everything is a little different in Little India. It’s great.

There were three food stops here. All great.

The first was a quick stop at a stall for samosas. We then sat at a street side stall and had roti jala and tried a chicken and a mutton curry. The food was great as was the atmosphere. I loved watching them make the roti jala.

The final stop for food in this part of the tour was at a “Michelin selected” restaurant. It was my favourite food stop. Even better was that it was a vegetarian restaurant. We tried multiple breads, vegetable dishes, a chickpea dish and sauces.

All tasted fabulous, especially when mixed together. I couldn’t even decide which bread I liked best.

Another fun thing we tried on this stop was teh tarik (pulled tea) which is known as the Malaysian national drink.

We didn’t just drink it, but we learned to pull it ourselves. This is basically pouring the tea back and forth between metal containers which is quite hard as it’s hot! It’s also fun, and it was nicest tea I have had as it tasted a little like milo to me.

By now, I was already full, but there was more to come, and I’m definitely not a quitter!

We walked around learning some more including seeing fresh spices including tamarind. More street art was on the way to our stop at the Clan Jetties.

At this stop, we ate at some stalls by a car park. We got lucky when they had run out of space so they set up some new tables for us which were facing a small temple. It was a great view!

Here, we had two Chinese noodle dishes including Penang’s famous char kuey teow. So good!

We also had chicken feet. I wasn’t able to eat much of the food by this point as I was so full, but it tasted great. At least the noodles did. I was too scared to try the chicken feet 😀

We also had some fresh nutmeg juice. It had never occurred to me that this was something you could drink, but it was so good and refreshing, especially in Penang’s heat.

While my tummy was letting me down, it was ok as there was only one stop left. It was dark when we walked on to our final stop and I was glad that it was only for liquid refreshments!

We stopped at one of the longest houses in Penang for this. Earlier in the tour, we had learned how the British used to tax people based on the width of their house. So they would have narrow houses but they could go a loooong way back – like a whole block!

This bar was in one of these huge places! It was fun walking through seeing courtyard gardens, bars, cafes, books and so many bits and pieces.

We finished by learning about and trying the local coconut wine. I enjoyed it! We then had it mixed with another drink, local style, before finishing with some Australian wine.

It was the perfect way to finish a perfect tour in Penang.

I very much enjoyed everything about this tour. I learned so much. The guide, Lee, was friendly and informative and fantastic at making everything easy to understand. I ate so many great dishes and I truly enjoyed every moment.

When I lived in Penang, we rarely came to George Town as it never seemed that interesting to us. That perspective has completely changed now I’ve explored it with a local. It’s such a cool city and it’s really pretty and interesting. Plus, it has some of the best food in the world.

Something to note is that I am describing the best Penang food tour that I did. The stops, food and experiences can vary depending on the day, weather and other reasons.

For example, I did this tour on a Monday so one of the usual stops was not open so we stopped at an alternative place. I also did this tour during Ramadan which may have had an impact.

There was also so much more information from our guide than what I am relaying here. She was a total fountain of knowledge from describing the food we were eating to talking about the history of the places to describing what life is like in Penang. For example, I found it interesting to hear what her and her family would usually eat in an average day.

So, if you have a nut allergy, which Malaysian foods you should avoid? Most Malaysian foods contain peanuts, which may pose a challenge for tourists with nut allergies .

If you have a severe nut allergy, avoid Nasi Lemak, Popiah, Rojak, Sat, ay, and ABC ice shave desserts as these are among the foods that have peanuts .

As peanuts are a staple part of the Malaysian diet, particularly among Malays and Chinese, it can be hard to find foods that contain no trace of them in the meals.

However, what I will suggest to you to avoid any unneeded allergy reaction that may disrupt your vacation is to ask the restaurant staff or when you are dining in Malay eateries, you may show this to the waiter/waitress when you are ordering the food: “Saya ada masalah alergi kacang tanah, kalau saya termakan nanti boleh ada masalah kesihatan sampai masuk wad. Dekat sini ada makanan yang tak ada kacang tak?”

(I have a peanut allergy. If I eat it, I will get health problems which may lead to being warded. Is there any food that doesn’t contain nuts at all?)

Food Tour Through Historic Georgetown, Penang

A fusion of different cultures, the city of Georgetown on the island of Penang is one of the best foodie destinations in the world. Georgetown has been a major port in Southeast Asia for hundreds of years trading goods and spices throughout southeast Asia and the main Asian continent. Descendants of China, Malaysia, India and other South Asia countries live and work together in this diverse city continuing their traditions, religions and cuisine. We decided the best way to learn more about the different cultures of Georgetown and how they influenced the cuisine was to take a food tour.

Our official food tour of Georgetown began early in the morning. We booked a tour with A Taste of Penang: Small Group Food Tour on Viator.com. We are not the “group tour” types, so the promise of a small group was what attracted us to this particular tour company. This would allow us to ask questions, and be able to hear the guide. When we arrived, we discovered that we would be the only two people on the tour. Awesome! Our tour guide Juni was a well-traveled local and ready to show us the best dishes of Penang.

Malaysian Breakfast

We began with a breakfast consisting of Nasi Lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk with sauces, dried shrimp and a hard boiled egg) and pork encased in bean curd casing, fried, with shrimp filled tofu and fried shrimp dumplings.

Next, we walked down a street to one of the wet markets . A wet market is where perishable goods are sold such as fruits, vegetables and meats. A few clothing and nick knack vendors were dotted in between and at the entrance. Some vendors had grills set up to cook meats and offer snacks. This man was making something similar to a crepe, and his wife wrapped what tasted like a Rice Krispy treat inside. This was a typical sweet snack, though I don’t remember the name.

Dining Amid Food Hawkers

Following the twisted streets of the market, we turned down a short alley with food hawkers and shaded tables for dining. Juni found us a table under a fan, then went to order a few key dishes.

We had our first taste of nutmeg juice. Nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla are all spice flavors used in Coca-Cola. The nutmeg juice tasted like Cherry Coke without the carbonation.

Char Koay Kak

Char Koay Kak is a Malaysian dish consisiting of a rice cake  chopped into small bites, fried in dark soy sauce, then fried again to order. The smaller the pieces, the more flavorful the dish because it soaks up the oil and seasonings.

Singapore Laksa

Singapore Laksa, a spicy, rice noodle soup with coconut milk, chicken and shrimp. Laksa is a hot soup with noodles dish derived from Chinese immigrants. Many different types of laksa exist throughout Malaysia influenced by the different ingredients available and cooking traditios of the people.

Campbell Street

After our second dining experience, we walked the streets of Penang looking at the different shophouses and cafes on Campbell Street, the “5th Avenue” of Penang. Colorful colonial buildings housed electronics, retail and even a designer burka shop. We stopped inside a Chinese Pharmacy where the owner was measuring out ingredients. As we window-shopped, Juni pointed out some of the street art depicting every day life of the people of Penang.

Dining at a 100-Year-Old Indian Restaurant

Our third stop was at the famous Indian Restaurant, Hameediyah! an Indian Muslim restaurant well over 100-years-old. We had the Nasi Kondar which originated in Penang by Indian immigrants. This mild dish consists of steamed rice with assorted curries, chicken and mutton.

Indian food tends to be heavy on the curry, but Murtabak is different. Murtabak is a pan fried crepe stuffed with curry chicken, onions, potatoes and served with pickled red onions and curry sauce. Because everything is enclosed inside, it can be eaten on-the-go or at a table with a fork. Murtabak is a food staple from the Saudi Arabian peninsula to Southeast Asia. This was my favorite dish, and I had many more murtabaks on our trip through Penang and Singapore.

Asam Laksa and Indonesian Dessert

Our last stop on the tour was at a small cafe. We were both pretty full by now, but the last course was what Tom had been waiting for, and the reason why we came to Penang; Asam Laksa.

Asam means tamarind, and the tamarind is what gives this dish a slightly sour taste. Asam Laksa is a soup made with mackerel stock, turmeric, tamarind, red chilies and noodles. It’s garnished with cucumber, onions, water spinach, Malay mint, pineapple and ginger flower blossoms. It’s tangy with an addictive spiciness.

Cendol for Dessert

Our last dish was the local dessert called Cendol. This consists of green jelly noodles, red beans, coconut milk and shaved ice. Beans are often used in Asian desserts. After the spicy Asam Laksa, and the heat of the day, Cendol was a refreshingly cool treat.

We recommend this food tour for anyone coming to Georgetown. The food was outstanding, and Juni our guide was very knowledgeable and able to hit all the highlights on this 3-hour tour. Why Take a Food Tour in Penang

Penang is renowned as one of Asia’s great street food cities.  But it can sometimes be intimidating to know what to order, how to order it and even to try to figure out what it is you are eating.  We had previously lived in Malaysia and are fairly familiar with the most popular dishes.  We tend to order the same few favourite things wherever we go and don’t always try new things.

On a food tour you are encouraged to sample and try everything and we discovered lots of new foods that we really enjoyed.  Since the tour winds history, culture and food together, we also learned so much more about Penang, its people and way of life.

Why Choose Simply Enak

After doing the Penang Harmony Food Trail with Simply Enak, I can definitely understand why they have such stellar reviews on Tripadvisor .  Our tour guide, Mark is born and bred in Georgetown and he tours you through the heritage quarter, where he grew up.

As we walked around sampling foods in our little group, we became fast friends with the other guests and Mark.  Mark was really open about sharing his opinions and thoughts on his country and city and we felt comfortable asking him about everything we were curious about.

Finally, the food.  That is why you pick a food tour and there was plenty of it on our tour.

The Foods We Tried

The Harmony Trail Food Tour starts at 8:30 (before it gets too hot out) and we made 4 stops where we sampled many dishes.  We walked about 3 km throughout the 3.5-4 hour tour, at which point our bellies were very full.

Our first stop of the day was an Indian restaurant for breakfast of puri and potato curry, dosa with coconut chutney, utta pam, vada donuts and chai.  The kids and adults gobbled up the delicious food while Mark explained the differences between each of them and how they are made.

While we were waiting for the food, Mark pulled out an ipad and explained the history of the island of Penang and where its inhabitants originated.  While I was already familiar with the Malay, Chinese and Indian heritage of Malaysia, I found it fascinating to learn about which regions of India and China migrants came from and the negotiations between the Sultan and the British over Penang.

In between food stops, we visited a number of temples as Mark took us down Harmony Street.  This is the street that was the focus of the UNESCO Heritage Site application as it houses a church, mosque, Chinese temple and Indian temples within close proximity.  We learned how the Chinese use oracle sticks at the temple, the roles the clans of Georgetown played in everyday business and how more recently tourism has gentrified the once seedy old town.

I loved how Mark adapted the tour as we went.  We stopped at a car with a Dato license plate and Mark explained what the Dato title means (similar to Sir or Lord) and how a person achieves that title.  After stuffing our bellies with roti, we continued along until the torrential rain hit.

Is a Food Tour Kid-Friendly?

A food tour can include a lot of walking, but the pace was suitable for kids with frequent stops to eat and see sights.  If travelling with little kids, bring a carrier as Georgetown’s streets are not conducive to using a stroller.

Pricing wise, the cost for kids 4-11 years old is only 50 MYR.

The Logistics of a Simply Enak Tour

Tours are offered in the morning and evening and are 3-4 hours long.  You will be doing lots of walking, which is a great way to walk off the food you will be eating.  Bring comfortable walking shoes and be prepared for rain as the tour goes in all weather.  Our meeting spot was St. George’s Anglican Church, which is in the Georgetown UNESCO heritage zone.  Mark paces you to ensure you don’t fill up too quickly.

Is the Tour Suitable for Vegetarians?

Asian food can be tricky for vegetarians since small amounts of meat are added to most dishes and meat stock and lard are used frequently.  Mark adapted our tour to include more Indian foods like roti canai, poori, appam and biryani since it is harder to eat vegetarian at Chinese restaurants.  You can definitely do the Simply Enak tour as a vegetarian, just make sure you let them know when you book.

What I Loved About Simply Enak Food Tours

We usually do self-tours of a city where we wander around using a guidebook or tourist map. The Harmony Trail Food Tour experience with Simply Enak completely enriched our visit.  We learned so much more than we could have from just a guidebook.  Mark shared stories of his childhood growing up in Georgetown, his opinions on the current state of Malaysia and the influences of Malaysian food.  He taught us about the history and culture, but with a refreshingly personal spin.  It really was like hanging out with a good friend and we really appreciated that casual feel of the tour.

As for the food, we are fairly familiar with Malaysian foods, but we often order the same things over and over again.  Mark wanted us to try lots of new things and we definitely came away with some new favourites.  As a born and bred Georgetown resident, Mark took us to the best of the best: little eateries and street stalls tucked down alleys, that we wouldn’t have found on our own.  Mark’s passion for food was infectious and the look of glee on his face when our foods arrived was evidence of his passion.

Our Verdict

We had no idea we would love an organized food tour so much.  Our tour with Simply Enak was definitely one of the highlights of our time in Penang and was a great way to learn about Georgetown’s history, culture and food.

Penang is known to have some of the best street food in Asia. So, what should we eat in George Town? Who better to ask than the Penang Food Experts in Penang Culture Singapore . For this trip, we had the Penangites from Penang Culture bring us on a 3-day Penang food tour, and showed us how to eat like a local.

We have a mission here — to try as many bowls of good Penang lor mee as possible. Why, you may ask? Well, this is because the chefs from Penang Culture Singapore are going to create their own version of Penang Lor Mee in Singapore after this trip. It is really exciting because I am a lor mee lover!

Do you know the differences between Singapore lor mee and Penang lor mee?

A good bowl of Penang lor mee has two key components — braised meat ingredients, and a starchy gravy that’s flavoured with five-spice powder from Penang, and egg white. The flavourful and aromatic gravy is made from different spices. The taste of the gravy is very distinct, and can’t be mistaken for something else.

In this post, we are not just introducing bowls and bowls of lor mee. We also want to show you the exciting food scene in Penang. Café Sin Yin Nam Address: Lorong Baru, George Town, 10450 George Town, Pulau Pinang

Sin Yin Nam cafe is what Malaysians call a coffee shop. Patrons can get assam laksa, chee cheong fun, lemongrass otah, wanton mee, chicken wings and more. I particularly liked the chee cheong fun which is doused in chilli sauce and prawn paste.

Hon Kei Food Corner 漢記小食店 Address: 45, Jalan Kampung Malabar, 10200 Penang

Hon Kei serves one of the best pork noodles in Penang. They used to operate by the road in front of Ho Ping Café, but they have moved to a bigger and more comfortable space. The pork noodles and porridge, which are made according to a 50-year-old recipe, are must-tries. The soup has a lovely sweetness, and it comes with generous amount of ingredients such as minced pork, brain, kidney, trip, intestine and heart. The curry noodles are thick and pack a spicy punch.

Kedai Kopi Ming Hooi Address: Gat Lebuh Macallum, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia

If you have travelled to Penang, you’ll probably remember some of the street names. But for many locals, they only know the streets by their numbers. The Seven Streets Precinct in Penang is a triangular space bordering Magazine Road, Jalan CY Choy and Jalan Gurdwara. Kedai Kopi Ming Hooi is located in Macallum Street which is considered the 5th street (Gor Tiau Lor in Hokkien). The big space is home to many coffee shops so there’s a huge variety of street food. We tried a few of the more popular options — oyster omelette (from Kedai Kopi Hoe Hin), prawn noodles (from Kopi Ming Hooi) and lor mee (from Kedai Kopi Mei Heong).

Restoran Nasi Kandar Line Clear Address: Beside 161 & 177 Penang Road, George Town, 10000 George Town, Pulau Pinang

Nasi kandar is a mildly-flavoured steamed rice dish that comes with a variety of curry-based meat dishes and vegetables. Penang’s Line Clear Nasi Kandar is a popular nasi kandar restaurant in Penang. The long line is testament to the popularity of the restaurant. Located along a narrow alley, this 24-hour joint serves good and cheap nasi kandar. The chicken drumstick is my favourite item! They also have daily specials such as fish curry or beef curry. Remember to pile on a mixture of gravy for that extra kick.

Mount Erskine Market Address: Jalan Mount Erskine, 10470, Penang, Malaysia

On the second day, we arrived bright and early at Mount Erskine Market just for the famous Hokkien Mee (we call them prawn noodles in Singapore). The soup is fragrant, with enough prawn flavours to wow your taste buds. It comes with a few prawns. Add a spoonful of red chilli paste on top and give the noodles a good stir. The addition of shallots further augments the whole flavour of the dish.

This is not like any other Penang food tour; remember our quest to find the best lor mee in Penang? After breakfast, we headed straight to Ah Quee Street Loh Mee. Their original stall is located in Lean Thye Coffee Shop along Ah Quee Street. Today, they have another branch in Hai Beng coffeeshop in Jalan Jones. The gravy was thick and robust, but a little too salty for me. If you want something more flavourful, go for the special order which has pig intestines and duck meat.

Kedai Kopi Seng Thor Address: 160, Lebuh Carnarvon, George Town, 10100 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia

The lor mee at Kedai Kopi Seng Thor is a clear winner. That unassuming sticky gravy has the perfect balance of savoury, sour, sweet and spicy flavours. It is topped with pork slices, hard boiled eggs and shallots. You can add as much garlic as you desire! While you’re here, you might also want to try the fried kway teow and lor bak. You may be surprised!

Tuai Pui curry mee Address: No, 23, Lebuh Kimberly, 10100 penang

Embark on a short walk from Seng Thor Lor Mee to Tuai Pui Curry Mee. The curry soup is made from several types of curry, giving it a little more complexity. It comes with a generous portion of tau pok, coagulated blood, blood cockles, cuttlefish, and more.

Projek Nasi Lemak Address: 498, Jalan Dato Keramat, George Town, 10150 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia

To escape the heat, we head to Projek Nasi Lemak which is talk of the town in penang. The cheese-baked lobster is served with nasi lemak and dyed blue with butterfly pea flower. Their homemade sambal was spicy but very shiok!

Ah Leng Fried Kway Teow Address: Jalan Dato Keramat, Kampung Makam, 10150 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia

Shawn from Penang Culture brought us to his favourite char kway teow stall in Penang, and that is none other than Ah Leng Fried Kway Teow! This is definitely one of the better ones I have tried. We added mantis shrimps into our noodles and requested for duck egg as well. The prawns were fresh and the creaminess of the duck egg gave this plate of char kway teow a unique edge. It is a little wetter and sweeter in taste. I totally regretted not ordering a plate for myself! 😀

Padang Brown Seafood Popiah Address: between Jln. Anson & Jln. Perak, 10450 George Town, Penang

Seafood Popiah at Gerai Gerai Padang Brown is one of the oldest stalls in Penang. It probably is also one of the few stalls that have crab meat in its popiah. Unlike our local popiah, this rendition from Padang Brown is packed with crab meat and turnip, and is drenched with prawn stock. Highly recommended! Note that it only opens after 2pm.

古早味炸香蕉年糕 Address: 50, Pengkalan Weld, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia

This roadside stall along Wely Quay is famous for kuih bakul (nian gao) and banana fritters. The father will first sandwich nian gao between slices of sweet potato & yam, before frying them till they’re golden brown. Eat it while it’s hot, so that the nian gao is warm and semi-molten.

Luo Ji Duck Meat Koay Teow Soup Address: Pulau Tikus @ Jalan Pasar

I have been to Pulau Tikus multiple times as there are many good hawker stalls here. I’ve saved the best for last – Luo Ji Duck Mee Koay Teow Soup. If you think it’s just any other bowl of clear soup, you are wrong. The Duck Meat Koay Teow Soup is light, yet substantial. You can really taste the original flavour of every ingredient. I was already stuffed, but the moment I tried this bowl of noodle soup, I ordered another bowl just for myself. This is such a satisfying meal that really hits the spot on a cold rainy day when you are craving something warm, fragrant and flavourful.

Pulau Tikus Market Address: Jalan Pasar

We went back to Pulau Tikus the very next morning because breakfast is totally different from dinner. One of the most popular dishes is the herbal duck soup noodle. The soup is boiled with herbs, and served with duck thigh and silken soft noodles (mee sua), wolfberries and a sprinkle of spring onions. This is the epitome of comfort food! We also had butter toast and char koay kark.

Cecil Street Market Address: 40-48, Lebuh Cecil, George Town, 10300 George Town, Pulau Pinang, Malaysia

Our last stop for this Penang food tour is Cecil Street Market. Cecil Street is called 7th street. Chef Ah Lipp’s wife brought me to a nameless roast meat stall just to buy roast meat. It was easily identifiable because they were the only ones with a queue. Join the queue to get some crispy sio bak and char siew! We also tried Lum Lai Duck Meat Koay Teow Thng, Mala Style Wanton Mee, Jawa Mee, and more. The mala wanton mee is quite popular. Think springy noodles dressed in mala sauce, soy sauce and sesame oil, and topped with pork lard.

With that, I conclude my 3D2N Penang food tour with Penang Culture Singapore . Three days is not enough, and there are still so many places that I want to visit. Penang Food Tour: Top 14 Street Food Dishes to Try in Georgetown

Earlier this year, I spent two months in Asia starting from Bali , then going to Jyogyakarta in Java, Gili Air in Lombok and finally in Malaysia. My husband Sandy joined me for the last leg of the trip and so we flew to Malaysia together. Our first stop was the wonderful and exotic island of Penang.

Penang, Malaysia

Ever since my short, but truly memorable trip to Sarawak in Malaysian Borneo a few years ago, I have been wanting to visit return to Malaysia. In particular, I wanted to visit Penang, an island off on the northwest coast of mainland Malaysia, dubbed the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ and the “world’s best food destination” (Lonely Planet 2014).

Georgetown, a World Heritage Site

Sandy and I spent four full days in Georgetown , the capital of Penang and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The town centre is fairly small and easy to get around on foot, bicycle or taxi (tip: use the Grab app). Sure, we could have covered the old streets and historic landmarks in two days (Armenian Street, Cheong Fatt Tze Blue Mansion, Chinese jetties, Queen Victoria Clock Tower, etc.), but we were happy to have planned extra time, so we could do things slowly.

First of all, because Georgetown is HOT. Even after spending two months in Indonesia, I was surprised by the heat and humidity of Penang! My advice: plan your tours in the early mornings or the late afternoons and evenings. During the hottest hours of the day, we either rested by the pool of our hotel (the wonderful Noordin Mews ) or went to a coffee shop or shopping mall.

The second reason is that there were so many dishes I wanted to try in Georgetown that two days would not have been enough.

The Street Food in Georgetown

Penang’s food is impossible to fit in just one category, for it is rooted in different cultures and ethnicities: Chinese, Indian, Malay, Mamak and Nyonya. That’s what makes it special and unique.

There is no lack of great restaurants in Georgetown, from the more traditional ones such as Tek Sen, a Chinese restaurant on Lebuh Carnarvon (order the double-cooked glazed pork) to modern and fun places that cater for young crowds like Two Buns (great burgers). I’m also pleased to report that there is really good speciality coffee in Georgetown (Kraffmen, Bricklin Café, Black Kettle and Macallum Connoisseurs are the ones I had time to visit).

But let’s talk about street food. Hawker centres are undoubtedly the main attraction for foodies travelling to Georgetown.

When there are so many street food vendors everywhere, how do you choose where and what to eat? Well, with no knowledge of the city, the local dishes and the language, it is hard to find the best and most authentic dishes. That’s why we decided to book a food tour.

There are few companies offering food tours of Georgetown, but after reading reviews, comparing prices and itineraries, we decided to join the tour with Food Tour Malaysia . It was the perfect introduction into Penang’s history, culture and cuisine. You can also find more food tours of Penang  here .

I thought the price was fair ($62 per person including transport and food) and I liked that in between stops we travelled by car. This way, we could explore different corners of the city and have brief moments of respite from the heat. Our guide Kevin, a former chef and restaurateur who’s lived in Penang his whole life, was very knowledgeable and friendly.

Hawker Centres

Quite fittingly, you’ll find some of the best food on Penang Road. There, I had a taste of three local delicacies: chendol, ais kachang and laksa. This street is very busy during the day up until around 7pm, afterwards everything will be shut (that’s the time when hawker centres get busy).Take a seat inside the restaurant and order from there to skip the long queue at the street food stall.

Penang Assam Laksa

Laksa (rice noodle soup) is one of the most popular dishes in Malaysian cuisine, but it will taste very differently depending on where you eat it. Penang Laksa is rich and spicy from the chilli paste, but also tangy and sour from the tamarind juice spicy and sour than other Laksa varieties found in the south of Malaysia which have a milder and creamier flavour. I wish I loved it, but Laksa is a little bit too spicy for me.

Cendol is a definite must-try dessert in Penang. It’s a bowl of shaved ice filled with green jelly noodles made from rice flour, red kidney beans, fresh coconut milk and gula melaka (brown sugar). It’s my husband’s favourite thing to eat in Malaysia and while we looked for it elsewhere, the best one we had was at Penang Road Teo Chew Cendol.

Ais Kacang is another traditional dessert: fill a bowl with shaved ice and top it with red beans, jelly, nipah palm seed (gelatinous balls), sweet corn, cubes of agar-agar jelly, drizzled with rose syrup and condensed milk. Like the cendol, it is very sweet but also very refreshing.

Prawn Fritters and Loh Bak

Our tour continued with a visit to the Chinese jetties. Each jetty is over a century old and named after a Chinese clan. The homes around it are still inhabited today.

Tan Jetty Prawn Fritters and Loh Bak is the name of a small shack selling, as the name suggests, prawn fritters and loh bak , deep-fried strips of pork loin meat wrapped in beancurd skin. I loved the fritters, but wasn’t personally too keen on the pork.

Kedai Kopi Mei Heong

Kedai Kopi Mei Heong is an open-air hawker centre which I loved because it was off the beaten track and I would have never gone there if I hadn’t been for the food tour. It’s in a small back road surrounded by blocks of flats, a little bit out of the old town, so you’ll need a taxi to get there.

Fried Radish

This stall selling all kinds of fritters, fried rolls and deep-fried vegetables was a dream! My favourite was the fried radish sticks, I was surprised by how delicious they were !

We walked over to a food cart where an Indian woman was pouring pancake batter over a cast iron pan. She was making apom manis: sweet, thin crêpes simply filled with brown sugar. So good!

New Lane Hawker Center

During the food tour, we also visited the food stalls in New Lane, one of the most popular destinations for street food in Georgetown. Sandy and I both loved it and we ate there two nights in a row.

New Lane is an open-air hawker centre and it really comes to life at sunset, from 7pm to around 9pm. You’ll notice many tables and chairs next to each food stalls: ask around which tables belong to which stall before sitting down. You can also sit inside the café on the corner and the food vendors will deliver to you (but make sure you order at least one drink per person from the café).

Char Koay Teow

Char Koay Teow  is truly a Penang speciality and a crowd-pleaser. The traditional dish is made of flat rice noodle strips stir-fried with shrimps, cockles, eggs, bean sprouts and lap cheong (Chinese sausage) in a mix of soy sauce.

Curry Mee is also extremely popular in Penang: a coconut-milk based curry soup with egg and rice noodles, bean sprouts, prawns, cockles, cuttlefish, mint leaves, eggs and chilli paste. Like the laksa, it was a bit too spicy for me.

Wan Tan Mee

One of my favourite dishes was Wan Tan Mee, a Hakka and Chinese dish originating in South China. It’s available as a dry dish topped off with char siu  (barbecued pork) slices or as a bowl of steaming hot broth garnished with shrimp or boiled pork dumplings.

Popiah are fresh spring rolls made with a thin wheat flour crêpe filled with an assortment of ingredients. Perfect for a snack on-the-go. The filling (veggies, eggs, fish or meat) is seasoned with a blend of sweet bean sauce, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, shrimp paste and sometimes chilli.

Putu Mayong

We stumbled upon this street vendor near Penang Times Square by chance, we recognised the dish from a street food guide we had read, so decided to give it a try. This Putu Mayong was one of the best things we tasted in Penang!

It’s a southern Indian dish, similar to string hoppers, made with a mix of rice flour and coconut milk, forced through a sieve to create fine, white vermicelli noodles. The Putu Mayong was topped with grated coconut and cane sugar and wrapped in newspaper to take away.

Mamak Cuisine

We can’t talk about Penang’s cuisine without mentioning Indian food, more specifically Mamak (Indian Muslim). These are just three of the most famous mamak dishes you will find in Penang.

Mee Goreng is a spicy fried rice noodles with a tangy concoction of tomato, chilli and soy sauce. Try the  mee goreng tambah sotong at Hameed Pata Mee Sotong in Medan Renong Padang Kota Lama near the Esplanade and Fort Cornwallis.

Nasi Kandar

Nasi Kandar  is a dish of rice mixed with different curry-based meat or vegetable dishes. Brave the queue at Deen’s Maju Nasi Kandar for the best Mamak cuisine in town.

Roti Canai is a flat bread that is a favourite breakfast dish in Malaysia, served with different curries and chutneys (it reminded me of parotta in Kerala ). We tried it at Sri Ananda Bahwan vegetarian restaurant in Little India.

Five days were not enough to explore all of Georgetown’s top street food joints to write a complete guide. I hope this post has given you an idea of how varied and special the food culture of Malaysia is. And maybe it has inspired you to visit Penang in the future, in which case I hope this post will help you choose what to eat.

Best things about Georgetown Penang (Plus street art + street food map)

George Town, Penang, Malaysia was recommended to us by fellow nomads. Now that we’ve been, we think Georgetown is the best place to visit in Southeast Asia for first time backpackers, couples, and new nomads. In this post we’ll share:

We think  George Town should be the number one stop for anyone visiting Southeast Asia  for the first time. Some say it could become “the next Chiang Mai” (a hub for digital nomads and expats).

Here are our top 6 reasons to visit George Town, Penang :

• English. The city was first established as a trading post of the British East Indian Company, so English is widely spoken (among several other languages).
• It’s got character. The historic town center has earned a UNESCO World Heritage designation and we always seem to love those heritage sites!
• Food. The area is known for its street food, where you can get meals for under $2 US. Additionally, there are plenty of artsy cafes and air conditioned restaurants, which are more expensive but still very affordable.
• Easy transit. There’s a free “CAT” bus route to most of the tourist spots in town, but an Uber ride across the city rarely goes over $2 anyway. We also found the Old Town to be very walkable, with a few caveats (see below).
• Sights abound. Whether you love colonial history, ancient temples, markets, beaches, jungle hikes, or street art, there’s a little bit of something for everyone. Plus, it’s on an island, and you’re not far from the resorts either.
• Health and safety. Healthcare here is top notch. Most doctors, dentists, etc. are trained in the US, UK, or Australia and – again – speak English. Tons of Westerners come here to get medical procedures done in world class facilities at very affordable prices. (We got full health checks including 66 blood tests, ultrasound, x-ray, EKG, and even breakfast, with results delivered the same day, for $112 US! Our dental cleanings were about $30 US and some of the best service we’ve ever received.) Penang is also one of the safest areas of Malaysia. We felt completely safe at all times. The number one safety warning seems to be: avoid feeding the wild monkeys, followed by a short mention of pick-pockets on the bus.

  In other words, Georgetown has all the benefits of other popular Southeast Asian destinations – affordability, amenities, and interesting sights – plus the very important added benefit of English. Even as experienced travelers, removing the communication barrier is a huge relief. AND though it’s very approachable to foreigners, it has yet to become overwhelmed with tourists.

So if you’re wary about visiting Southeast Asia on your own (as we were when we had never traveled outside of Spanish or French-speaking countries) or you aren’t sure where to start, then consider George Town, Penang, Malaysia.

Where to stay in George Town, Penang

To be honest, I was somewhat underwhelmed by the Airbnb offerings in our usual budget range for Southeast Asia (this will likely change as tourism increases), but we were happy with the place we found. The rooms are very small but well designed with private bathrooms and separate entrances, attached to the host’s house. We “splurged” and booked the largest for 11 nights. It was just around the corner from the shops of Nagore Square (pictured above) and about a 15 minute walk to the Old Town area.

Getting around Penang

One reason we recommend staying in the town center is because it’s easy to get around. The city offers a free shuttle bus that loops around the main tourist area ( here’s the most useful info and map about the CAT shuttle bus that we found). City bus rides elsewhere are super cheap, just tell the driver where you’re going when you get on and he’ll tell you the fare (bring small bills and coins as they don’t give change back). Alternatively, you can call a Grab car or Uber for no more than a couple dollars across town, or get a more interesting experience by hiring a trishaw driver for quite a bit more.

We used a combination of Uber, the free CAT shuttle, and city buses – but mostly, we walked. The temperature was fine in the morning and evenings, granted this was in January and even then the mid-day sun got to be a bit much. You do need to constantly watch your step – and don’t expect to use sidewalks like you’re used to, either.

Cheap places to eat street food in Georgetown

1. The coffee house/food court:  This typically has a covered, open-air seating scenario where various food cart vendors are stationed along the outside. You can order dishes from any combination of the food carts and tell them where you’ll be sitting. The coffee house owner or food court operator will then take your drink order – drinks are required for use of the tables, or else you’ll be asked to pay a fee. Often they’ll make juices fresh with real fruit (and sugar); other options may be soft drinks, tea, coffee, or a coconut. Drinks and food will arrive to your table whenever they’re ready, and you’ll pay separately for each.

2. The specialty shop:  These restaurants specialize in just one or two things, and they usually do them really well! It may be chicken noodle soup, or fish ball soup, or Hainan chicken rice, or roti bakar (toast). Often they’re only open for half the day, depending on whether their specialty is a breakfast food or dinner fare. Either way, if the locals are flocking to it and you see everyone eating the same thing, take that as a very good sign.

2. Visit historic sites

George Town is designated a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its exceptional example as a multi-cultural trading town, with influences from both Asia and colonial Europe. Simply walking around the core heritage zone and the “buffer zone” will bring you to numerous historic commercial buildings; temples of Chinese, Malay, and Indian origin; and colonial style homes.

Some of the more famous sights include The Blue Mansion ,  Han Jiang Ancestral Temple , and Fort Cornwallis.

3. Hike Penang Hill and Penang National Park

Any way you cut it, it’s a challenging (and sweaty) climb to the summit but a rewarding hike nonetheless. Start at sunrise, bring extra water, and maybe even a change of clothes! You can also get the view above by doing a shortened hike from Moongate to “Penang Hill Station 5” – an outdoor fitness area in the jungle – and returning by the same way.

The entry trail along the sea is mostly flat and populated with monkeys. Then you can choose to hike left for the beach with small turtle sanctuary or right for Monkey Beach and lighthouse.

Monkey Beach was closed when we went, so we took the other route to Kerachut Beach. The hike is up and down and gets very hot and sweaty! It is said to take most people 90 minutes one way. It was a cool trail and a nice, quiet beach. The turtle sanctuary is not really worth visiting unless baby turtles are hatching, as there are normally just a few sea turtles in small, depressing tubs.

The municipal council wisely commissioned a Lithuanian muralist and a steel rod sculpture company, who – along with several other artists – have created enticing wall art throughout Georgetown. Penang street art offers a whimsical, modern contrast to the historic architecture of the heritage zone. What makes it especially fun to explore is that much of the Georgetown street art is interactive.

If you are looking for a Georgetown walking tour in 2024 here is a route for you to make sure you see all of the main Georgetown sights and attractions. Georgetown in Penang is a beautiful UNESCO world heritage site with temples, street art, street food, colonial buildings and its own little India.

The following walking tour is a loop including many of the main attractions of George Town. On this tour we have included some amazing Georgetown street food too… it wouldn’t be Penang without some great food !

One of the best ways to immerse yourself in the smells, sights, history and culture of this beautiful town is to take a walking tour. There are other alternative ways between these attractions. For example you can take bicycle rickshaw rides around Georgetown. It costs around RM 30-40 for a 1-hour rickshaw tour of Georgetown.

Rickshaws can normally take up to 3 people. You can find Rickshaws waiting all around Georgetown. The most reliable spot to find them is opposite to the Yap Kongsi temple (this is included on the walking tour route). Alternatively consider renting a bicycle to do this Georgetown walking tour route.

How far is the Georgetown walking tour?

The total distance of this Georgetown walking tour is around 6km (or 4 miles). The total time for the loop will take 3 – 5 hours if you stop and enjoy each attraction. And if you don’t want to walk the whole route? It is possible to use Grab taxis to get a ride between some of these attractions (this should cost around 5 ringgits (around £1 or $1.30) for these short journeys and it is usually pretty easy to get Grab taxis in Georgetown. We have suggested a couple of longer sections where you may wish to take a Grab rather than walking. 

1 Fort Cornwallis

Our Georgetown walking tour starts at Fort Cornwallis. You could start this loop at any point that is convenient for you. If you visit the destination in order (from any start point) you will minimize the distance you need to walk. Visit Fort Cornwallis (North East corner of George Town). This is a colonial fort with nice views of the jetty and little India. Opposite Fort Cornwallis is the Penang Trick Art museum. Fort Cornwallis was built by the British East India Company in the late 18th Century. 

2 St George’s Church 

As you walk up Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling you will see St George’s church. St George’s church is a 19th century Anglican Church. It is the first purpose-built Anglican church in Southeast Asia. This is just one landmark that reflects the rich heritage and diversity of Georgetown Penang. Near St George’s church you can also see the famous Goddess of Mercy temple. This is an impressive Chinese temple. 

3 Peranakan mansion

The next landmark on this Georgetown walking tour is the Peranakan Mansion. This is a beautiful ornate mansion located on church street. The Peranakan Mansion with its striking green is a celebration of the Baba and Nonya culture in Penang. The Babas and Nonya’s are descendants of Chinese and Malay people who intermarried many generations ago.

They formed their own unique culture, dress and food. This landmark is a slight detour, so alternatively you could miss this and just walk up Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling past the Goddess of Mercy Chinese temple and past the Sri Mahamariamman Hindu Temple. Entrance to the Peranakan Mansion costs 20 ringgits per person (roughly £4 or $5). 

4 Little India and the Sri Mahamariamman Hindu Temple

As you walk through little india keep your eye out for excellent indian food. Walk past the impressive Sri Mahamariamman Hindu Temple on Queen Street. You will also see shops selling Indian Spices and ornaments. If you have time we recommend exploring some of the fascinating shops in little India Georgetown. After this, our Georgetown walking tour takes you to Kapitans restaurant – a great place to stop for a drink and some food. 

5 Kapitan Tandoori

Kapitans is based on Jalan Chulia and serves amazing tandoori and Indian food. They also offer amazing Biryani sets and have various curries and breads on offer. We love the range of drinks available at Kapitans too. Try Teh Tarik (spicy, sweet Indian tea or Badam Milk – Indian Almond milk). This is a great place to enjoy the vibes and tastes of Georgetown. 

6 Kapitan Mosque

The Georgetown walking tour then passes the famous Kapitan mosque. This large and prominent mosque was built in the 19th century by Indian Muslim traders and is a testament to the rich heritage of Georgetown. 

7 Yap Kongsi Temple

A short walk from Kapitan Mosque you can see the colorful and charming Yap Kongsi temple. Just opposite this temple you can also see bicycle rickshaws. This is a very beautiful part of town. The Georgetown walking tour now leads you down into the street art district of Georgetown. This is perhaps the most iconic part of Georgetown. 

8 Famous Penang street art

Keep an eye out for the famous Penang street art. The most famous and iconic piece of street art in Penang is the children on the bicycle. This is located on Armenian Street, just a minute or two walk from the Yap Kongsi temple.

The awesome pictures are found on buildings along Muntri Street, Weld Quay, Lebuh Leith, Armenian Street, Ah Quee Street and more. Once you have explored the street art walk southbound on Armenian street until you meet the coat road (Pengkalan Weld) where you can explore the jetties and settlements that overlook the ocean. 

9 Jetties and the Hean Boo Thean Kuan Yin Temple

The jetties and settlements run for around 0.5km south of the Penang ferry terminal. These jetties (wooden piers) were built for trade and transportation by Chinese migrants who moved to Malaysia early in the 19th century to trade.

We love the fact that this is still a beautiful community. You can explore wooden winding alleys – over the water.

Don’t miss the Hean Boo Thean Kuan Yin Buddhist Temple (on the of Pintasan Pengkalan 1). You may want to take a Grab taxi for this next section of the walk.

10 Komtar tower and shopping mall

After exploring the jetties, walk up Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong towards Komtar tower. Komtar tower is a central shopping and transportation hub in George Town. You will see Komtar shopping mall on your left and Komtar tower behind it. If you enjoy shopping, take a little time to explore the Komtar shopping mall. At the end of Jalan Dr Lim Chwee Leong turn right onto Penang road and then immediately turn right again on to Lebuh Keng Kwee.

TOP TIP: If you have a head for heights don’t miss the KOMTAR Rainbow Sky Bridge! A great spot for a dizzying selfie!

11 Penang road street food (Lebuh Keng Kwee)

We mentioned that the Georgetown walking tour will include some food stops. During the day Lebuh Keng Kwee street has lots of small streetside stalls (hawkers) and small cafes serving Malaysian Chinese food. Don’t miss Assam Laksa (spicy noodle soup with fish).

This is an amazing intense Nonya dish. It costs around 6 ringgits for a bowl of laksa. Also make sure you try Chendul (a sweet shaved ice dessert with coconut, pandan noodles and palm sugar)

And definitely don’t miss char koay teow (Malaysian fried noodles with vegetables and seafood). After enjoying some Chinese Malaysian treats, keep walking along Penang road (away from Komtar) until the road splits. Go right along Leith street until you see the Blue Mansion on your right.

12 Blue Mansion (Cheong Fatt Tze)

The final attraction on the Georgetown walking tour is the Blue Mansion. The Blue Mansion was built by an influential Chinese businessman and politician called Cheong Fatt Tze, who aimed to celebrate and preserve the beautiful Chinese culture and heritage. Construction started in 1896. Cheong Fatt Tze used the finest materials and builders to construct the blue mansion, which became an iconic attraction of Georgetown. The blue mansion now offers boutique accommodation, fine dining and tours of the property. You can now do daily tours in English at 11am and 2pm. The cost is RM 25 for adults and RM 12.50 for children. You can book Blue Mansion tickets online .

At the end of the Geogetown walking tour you could also drop by Upper Penang Road (on the junction of Penang road and Jalan Sultan Ahmed Shah) where you will find several bars offering outdoor seating areas.
