Hidden gems of the UAE: nine secluded hiking trails loved by trekkers

From wadi watering holes and hidden beaches to 4,000-year-old mountain tombs and archaeological sites, expert guides reveal their top outdoor walks.

There’s no time like a new year to blow the cobwebs away with an invigorating hike – and there’s no better place than the UAE to get trekking.

Venture away from the skyscrapers and beach clubs and you’ll soon discover the breathtaking array of mountains, deserts and lush green wadis waiting to be explored.

In this series, we speak to the experts – the tour guides , the foodies and the artists – to uncover the Emirates’ hidden gems .

For our latest instalment, we’re leaving the city behind and following in the footsteps of the city’s trail guides who spend their days rambling through some of the UAE’s most stunning natural spaces.

Exploring desert, mountains and burial sites in Sharjah

For Paul Oliver, founder and chief executive of Absolute Adventure, one of the most unique spots in the country lies up in the mountains of Kalba.

  • Always check the weather forecast before setting off
  • Make sure you have plenty of water
  • Set off early to avoid sudden weather changes in the afternoon
  • Wear appropriate clothing and footwear
  • Take your litter home with you

The “Tomb Raider Trek” refers to a 4,000-year-old tomb that Oliver stumbled across while hiking up to Kalba Mountain Camp in the Hajar Mountains.

“We first came across the tomb by accident when we were hiking through a small plateau up in the mountains,” explains Oliver. “We alerted the authorities but when they came to excavate the site, we discovered that it had already been pillaged by grave robbers hundreds or even thousands of years ago.”

Hikers who join the Absolute Adventure tour are given a history of the findings, which are thought to date back to the Bronze Age, before a descent into a wadi, with the whole trail lasting about two hours across 4 kilometres.

“It’s a fascinating hike if you like history, especially given the fact that we found the site and can give a first-hand account,” says Oliver.

History buffs should also make a beeline for Sharjah’s Fossil Rock in Mleiha for a hike through the desert exploring prehistoric archaeological sites, says Oliver.

“The hike here leads through several caves, each containing a glimpse into the past. It’s a really fascinating hike that has huge archaeological significance.”

The three-hour hike starts at a small car park in Mleiha marked as The Water Spring on Google Maps and leads through the desert and mountains, painting a picture of how former civilisations lived in the mountains.

Castles, wadis and farms in Fujairah

Fujairah is known for its stunning beaches and dive spots, but the emirate’s natural beauty is just as spectacular on dry land.

Amy Subaey, managing director of UAE Trekkers, loves Fujairah for its heritage, wildlife and spectacular scenery.

And, for that reason, she recommends aspiring ramblers head to Al Hail Castle .

“A hike around Al Hail is perfect if you’re looking for a bit of culture,” says Subaey. “It’s an incredibly interesting place that’s off the beaten track and there’s a lot of history there."

The 3km walk is a great choice for beginners, lasting about one hour and a half and winding through mountains, a wadi and archaeological sites up to the Al Hail Castle grounds.

“It’s surrounded by little farms and is a great place to spend a couple of hours with the kids,” she says.

“There’s a little town nearby, so you won’t feel totally cut off from civilisation but you’ll still experience the great outdoors.”

For more experienced hikers, Subaey recommends Wadi Dahir for an invigorating five-hour loop through mountains and valleys.

“Wadi Dahir is incredible,” she says. “The views from up there are just out of this world and it’s one of my personal favourite hikes for the sheer beauty of it.

“The trail starts in the mountains and winds through hills and valleys, ending with banana and palm trees and a water-filled wadi.”

The route is easily found on Google Maps, using the wadi’s alternative name, Wadi Al Hina Dam Dahir, and a car park is accessible from the main road, however, Subaey recommends taking a professional guide.

“If you’re not an experienced hiker then it’s a good idea to get a guide on this one,” she says. “It’s not the easiest hike and you really wouldn’t want anything to come between you and those views.”

For her final recommendation, Subaey recommends heading to another Fujairah wadi for an easier ramble.

“ Wadi Helo is a Unesco Heritage Site in Fujairah with really cool watchtowers surrounded by farms,” she explains. “It makes for a fascinating hike, especially if you start from the castle and then walk up to the watchtower.

“The whole trail is about 1km long and only takes about one hour, so you can easily do this one on your own and it’s a great starting point for beginners.”

Wadi wandering is Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah has a well-deserved reputation for outdoor adventure and no one knows its hiking trails better than Bryan Doyle, general manager of The Adventure Centre.

“The hike from Wadi Sena to Wadi Kub is stunning,” says Doyle. “It starts with a long steep hill, approximately 2km long with an incline of approximately 1.2km.

“Once reaching the top of the mountain track, there are numerous campsites and lovely areas for a barbecue.

“From there, it is a nice gentle downhill hike through traditional Arabic farms and reservoirs and from here you can either continue west through the wadi to link into Wadi Kub or take one of the many loops back to the start of Wadi Sena.”

Wadi Sena in Ras Al Khaimah. Photo: The Adventure Centre

Another of Doyle’s favourite trails in RAK begins from Wadi Kub , deep in the Hajar Mountains from co-ordinates 25.492643, 56.101787.

“Within this wadi, you will see an amazing geological phenomenon,” explains Doyle. “The rock is stacked up from thousands of years of movement.

“After any form of rain in this area, you will see spectacular waterfalls coming from the mountains, feeding into one of the many rock pools in this area.”

hiking tours uae

Oliver is also a fan of hiking in RAK and, although Wadi Showka is well known among the UAE’s hikers, Oliver has discovered an alternative route around the area that not many people are aware of.

“Most people stop at the beginning of the Showka Dam but we tend to drive further into Wadi Showka to an Etisalat mast and hike around the rear loop,” says Oliver. “Most people tend to hike around the front but this loop is a lot more remote and scenic.

“It’s about a three-hour hike in total that takes you high up into the mountains and the views are just incredible.”

Hiking, kayaking and super slides in Hatta

Though Hatta is becoming increasing popular with outdoor enthusiasts, Subaey urges hikers to make the 90-minute drive to discover everything that Dubai’s mountainous little sister has to offer.

“ Hatta might not be considered as much of a hidden gem compared to some of the other trails but it’s incredibly beautiful out there,” Subaey says.

“I’d recommend starting behind Wadi Hub. There’s a tonne of trails of various lengths and intensity and it’s a great place to hike with kids.”

PCGFWC Majestic view of Hatta dam in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Photonell / Alamy Stock Photo

As well as spectacular hiking trails, visitors to Hatta can also enjoy kayaking on the Hatta Dam, mountain biking or plummeting down slides at speeds of up to 80km per hour at Wadi Hub.

“The best thing about hiking in Hatta is that you can combine it with something else, like an activity at Wadi Hub or kayaking or even just a nice lunch,” she says.

“There’s always [a] phone signal, you’re never far from water or help if you get into any difficulty. For people who don’t know a lot about hiking, it’s the safest place you can go to explore.

“It feels really remote and you can experience all of the joys of hiking in the mountains without any of the risk.”

Top nine UAE hiking trails:

  • Tomb Raider trail, Kalba, Sharjah
  • Fossil Rock, Mleiha, Sharjah
  • Al Hail Castle, Fujairah
  • Wadi Dahir, Fujairah
  • Wadi Helo, Fujairah
  • Wadi Sena, Ras Al Khaimah
  • Wadi Kub, Ras Al Khaimah
  • Wadi Showka, Ras Al Khaimah
  • Hatta, Dubai

Hiking in Dubai: The 10 Best Trails in the UAE

hiking tours uae

Hiking might not be the first word that comes to mind when travelers think of Dubai. City-sized malls, pristine beach resorts, and luxurious mega-yachts have all stolen the spotlight in this desert city, but I’m here to tell you its best-kept secret: The UAE has some of the most extraordinary hiking trails in the world.

From Martian-esque landscapes to rugged wadi treks, traversing off the beaten track in the UAE is a unique way to see a new side to the country and better understand the rural lifestyle that still exists in the Emirates. From the bustling streets of Bur Dubai to the simple pearling villages on the coast , there’s a lot more to the UAE than the Burj Khalifa.

So visiting Dubai and need a city break? Live in the Emirates and want to experience a new side of the country? In this guide, I’ll break down my top 10 favorite hiking trails in the UAE and exactly how to get there from Dubai. Let’s get exploring!

Things to Know Before Hiking in the UAE

Due to its arid landscapes and often extreme conditions, hiking in the UAE can be a completely different experience from trekking on foot anywhere else in the world. Here are a few things to consider before you hit the trails.

  • Consider Your Fitness Levels : Have you been on a hike before? Do you have experience hiking elsewhere in the world? These are all important questions to consider before setting out on a trek in the Emirates. Consider your current fitness levels and don’t be afraid to start with one of the easier hikes on this list to get started.
  • Join a Group Trip: If this is your first time hiking, or you’d rather not hike alone, there are plenty of group trips organized throughout the Emirates. I recommend checking Meetup for organized groups.
  • Pack Plenty of Water: You’ll need way more water than you think! I recommend at least 3 liters per person. I carry this water bladder with me on all my hikes in the UAE.
  • Consider the Geography: Are you hiking in the rocky mountains of the north? The desert landscapes of the south? Consider the landscape you are visiting before you begin your hike in the UAE and make sure you pack appropriately.
  • Dress Accordingly: I recommend lightweight but full-coverage clothing for hiking in the UAE. Not only will this keep you protected from the sun, but many hikes are in more rural areas where conservative dress is appreciated. Consider long-sleeve hiking tees like this one from Columbia .
  • Hike in the Correct Season: Simply put, the summer months are too hot to be hiking in the UAE. The best season for hiking is between October-March, when the temperatures are more mild. Regardless of the season, I recommend beginning early to maximize shade and cooler temperatures.
  • Pay Attention to the Weather: While rain is scarce in the UAE, reconsider your hike if you choose the one rainy way of the year! Much of the infrastructure of the UAE is not equipped for rain, and many desert landscapes are prone to flash floods in the case of rain.

Understanding This Guide

While living in the Emirates, I hiked nearly every weekend (sometimes, quite frankly, against my own best interest !) Here I’ve compiled my top 10 hiking trails, all accessible from Dubai . With everything from urban treks to multi-day mountain hikes, there’s something for every hiker on this list.

I’ve organized this list by distance from Dubai, but also specified trekking difficulty for each hike. I’ve also written extensively about many of the hikes mentioned here, so check out my in-depth guides for each as you go along. Happy hiking!

Best Hiking in Dubai City

Don’t want to leave the city limits? Here are the best hikes within the city of Dubai .

1. Zero Point Running Track

hiking tours uae

By far the closest hike you can get to Dubai, the Zero Point Running Track is an urban trek passing by all of Dubai’s most popular beaches. Beginning at Jumeirah Beach just beyond the Burj Al Arab, this trek continues for 5.1 miles alongside many of Dubai’s most notable landmarks. Admire the paragliders along Kite Beach or wave to the Burj Khalifa in the distance!

The path itself is completely flat and rubberized, so it’s an easy hike suitable for any fitness level. The path also has access to public restrooms along the way as well as a number of restaurants. I recommend a stop at SALT in Kite Beach – try their salt and vinegar fries and thank me later!

ZERO POINT RUNNING TRACK Difficulty: Easy Distance: 5.1 miles/8.2km Location: 25.147373, 55.194181 (Starting Point) Cost: Free

2. Mushrif Park Trails

hiking tours uae

Mushrif Park is a hidden gem in Dubai, its extensive network of trails immediately transporting you from bustling city streets to tranquil nature paths. While there are a number of trails to choose from in the park, the best is its 9.7km hiking trail through the desert landscapes.

During the route, hikers will be able to view a number of unique changing landscapes, as well as wildlife native to the area. Keep an eye out for plenty of friendly chipmunks, and if you’re lucky, a stoic Arabian Gazelle! The route is also fully equipped with public restrooms and plenty of signage, so it’s a great start for beginners.

If you’re into biking, Mushrif Park is also home to over 50 km of biking trails, as well as a skills course and pump track. Come for a hike, or bring your bike and get your adrenaline pumping!

MUSHRIF PARK TRAILS Difficulty: Easy Distance: 6 miles/9.7 km Location: 25.223475, 55.452272 (Administration Office) Cost: 10 AED per car

Best Hiking in The Emirate of Dubai

The Emirate of Dubai encompasses the city but so much more – stretching out into the desert and including the mountainous enclave of Hatta. If you want to explore beyond the city limits but still stay close to home, here are the best hikes in the Emirate of Dubai .

3. Al Qudra Lakes Trails

An hour drive from downtown Dubai lies the Al Qudra Lakes – home to a number of trails and some of the most extraordinary wildlife in the country. Over 170 species of birds call the lakes home, from commonly spotted flamingos, geese, and ducks to rarer species like the steppe eagle and Asian houbara.

The Al Qudra Lakes are home to a number of trails and are a popular spot for desert camping in Dubai. The most popular trail surrounds the Love Lakes – two interlocking lakes in the shape of a heart encircled by 7 km of trail. Come wander the lakes with someone you love before pitching your tent under a night of desert stars.

There are a number of other lakes in the area that can be explored either on foot or by car. Check out this in-depth guide to all the lakes in the area.

AL QUDRA LAKES Difficulty: Easy Distance: ~4.3 miles/7 km Location: 24.839975, 55.352506 (Main Al Qudra Lake) Cost: Free

QUICK TIP: The Al Qudra Lakes are located right by the Al Marmoum Racetrack, home to Dubai’s weekly camel races! Check out my guide to visiting this popular Emirati sport.

4. Hatta Sign Hike

hiking tours uae

Perhaps the most Instagram-famous hike in the Emirates, the Hatta Sign hike in Hatta’s Wadi Hub puts the Hollywood Sign to shame. Hatta is an enclave of the emirate of Dubai, located approximately 140km (1.5 hours by car) from downtown Dubai. The towering skyscrapers are replaced by the towering Hajar Mountains, and in the middle of them all lies the Hatta Sign, perfect for sweeping views or epic Insta shots.

The hike is short but steep, a little over 3 km round trip but with major elevation gain in the first half. Beginning at Wadi Hub, a “hub” of adventure activities such as cycling, high ropes courses, and more, the trail quickly turns uphill and takes hikers all the way to the viewpoint, where they can snap a photo with the 19-meter tall sign, or admire the views into neighboring Oman .

Want to hike the Hatta Sign for yourself? Check out my in-depth guide to every step of the hike!

HATTA SIGN HIKE Difficulty: Easy/Medium Distance: 1.9 miles/3 km Location: 24.814353, 56.159866 (Wadi Hub Parking Area) Cost: Free

Best Hiking in the UAE

The UAE is actually home to 7 Emirates, each with their own unique personalities and terrain. Beyond the boundaries of Dubai lie 6 more emirates to explore, and here are some of the best hikes in the UAE .

5. Fossil Rock

hiking tours uae

One of my favorite hikes in the UAE, Fossil Rock is a geologist’s dream, the route taking hikers over a fossil-laden rock with sweeping views of the desert. Keep your eye out as you trek for prehistoric nummulites embedded in the rock, or admire the orange sands of the surrounding Mleiha Desert .

Despite being located in Dubai’s neighboring Emirate of Sharjah, Fossil Rock is only a short drive from downtown Dubai, making it one of the best day hikes on this list. I’d describe the hike as medium difficulty, mainly due to its somewhat unmarked path and flexible route. I’ve broken down each step of the process in my Fossil Rock Hiking Guide , so don’t fret too much about missing the trail and get to spotting prehistoric gastropods!

FOSSIL ROCK HIKE Difficulty: Medium Distance: 5 miles/8 km Location: 25.10029, 55.50297 (Parking Spot for Hike) Cost: Free Emirate: Sharjah – 70 km from Dubai

6. Wadi Naqab

hiking tours uae

Wadi Naqab might be one of the most technical hikes in the UAE, but worth every step. Located in the northernmost emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, this hike combines all the best elements of a UAE trek – winding wadis, mountaintop villages, and sweeping views. It’s truly one of my favorite hikes in the country, a perfect combination of technical and challenging but with epic payoff.

The Wadi Naqab hike begins fairly flat, wandering along a well-compacted dirt road through a wadi. The hike then takes you up the side of the wadi over a wide rocky ledge, an adrenaline boost with epic views before descending yet again into a wadi filled with small winding pools. Finally, you’ll climb steeply uphill to the final point of the hike – the rural, mountaintop village of Al Sanat, complete with terraced farms and epic views of the Hajar Mountains.

The Wadi Naqab trail is fairly well-marked, but I still recommend following a Wikiloc Guide to ensure you follow the trail correctly, as it can be fairly technical.

WADI NAQAB Difficulty: Medium/Difficult Distance: 8.6 miles/13 km Location: 25.690768, 56.041753 (Parking Spot for Hike) Cost: Free Emirate: Ras Al Khaimah – 115 km from Dubai

7. Wadi Shees

hiking tours uae

For those who want to explore outside the city limits but aren’t looking for a hike of epic proportions, the Wadi Shees Nature Trail is the perfect in between. This is the perfect introductory hike – 1.8 km through a date farm, where visitors can observe the date growing process in action.

The trail also takes visitors along an ancient falaj – an ancient system of irrigation utilized throughout the Arabian Peninsula to transport fresh water year round. The falaj beside the Wadi Shees Nature Trail is one of the oldest in the country, 3,000 years old to be exact! The trail is a great way to get to know about the history of the emirates while also spending some time outside in nature.

The best part? Wadi Shees is home to its own microclimate, meaning it’s cooler year round! If you’re looking for a respite from the summer heat, check out my guide to planning the perfect day trip to Wadi Shees .

WADI SHEES Difficulty: Easy Distance: 1.1 miles/1.8 km Location: 25.291278, 56.244973 (Beginning of Trail) Cost: Free Emirate: Sharjah – 120 km from Dubai

8. Al Rabi Hike

hiking tours uae

Located on the UAE’s stunning eastern coastline, the Al Rabi Hike is one of the best places from which to view the Gulf of Oman. This hike is located right outside the city of Khor Fakkan , meaning you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the seaside city once you reach the final lookout.

With a roundtrip distance of 5.5 kilometers, the Al Rabi Trail is a great starting point for those interested in dipping their toes into hiking, but with a gradual elevation, it’s certainly not a walk in the park either. The trail begins at the Al Rabi Tower (Burj al Rabi), a watchtower constructed in 1915, and continues up the adjacent mountain. You’ll have epic views of the ocean the entire time – make sure to keep your eyes peeled for boats, dolphins, and a few hidden beaches along the way!

Al Rabi is one of my favorite hikes in the UAE, but Khorfakkan is my favorite city! If you still have time after your hike, check out Shark Island – my favorite snorkeling spot in the country!

AL RABI HIKE Difficulty: Easy/Medium Distance: 3.4 miles/5.5 km Location: 25.339901, 56.357955 (Parking Spot for Trail) Cost: Free Emirate: Sharjah – 130 km from Dubai

9. Wadi Ghub

hiking tours uae

Wadi Ghub is colloquially called the “Rainbow Spectrum Hike” and for good reason. From the moment you step foot in the wadi you’ll feel like you’ve landed on another planet – multicolored rocks create layers of color all around you, appearing like a rainbow. While the most photographed spot of this hike is the Rainbow Valley – where layers of white and pink rock align to create a colorful swell – the entire wadi is filled with multi-colored rocks and is certainly worth exploring.

Wadi Ghub is one of the most customizable hikes on this list. The Rainbow Valley is a mere 3.2 roundtrip from the trailhead, meaning even novice hikers can go get the Insta-shot they’re looking for. However, there’s plenty more to see in the wadi, so more experienced hikers can continue on up to 13 km into the wadi to find views into neighboring Oman. Check out my Ultimate Guide to Wadi Ghub to explore all the different hiking routes in this valley.

WADI GHUB Difficulty: Easy/Medium/Difficult (routes vary) Distance: 2-8 miles/3.2-13 km Location: 25.577142, 56.185255 (Parking Spot for Trail) Cost: Free Emirate: Fujairah – 140 km from Dubai

10. Stairway to Heaven

hiking tours uae

Last but not least, the final place on this list goes to the UAE’s most challenging hike, the Stairway to Heaven . This hike has an infamous reputation – known for its never ending uphill and gravely, technical path. The irony is that this remote hike is a daily commute for many – you’ll likely pass plenty of local villagers making their way up the mountain if you decide to take the trek.

I’m a fairly strong hiker, but I actually believe the Stairway to Heaven hike is a great challenge for those wanting to test their physical abilities (and have epic views while they do it!) It’s a challenging hike mainly for its elevation – it’s basically an uphill climb to the top with little to no respite. However, the views of the surrounding cliffs are extraordinary, making every uphill step worth it.

If you’re nervous about the challenge, I recommend camping at a shelter along the route. We did this and found it way easier to tackle the hike over two days. You can read all about my own hike of the Stairway to Heaven in my in-depth guide to the route .

STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN Difficulty: Difficult Distance: 5-12 miles/8-20 km Location: 25.577142, 56.185255 (Parking Spot for Trail) Cost: Free Emirate: Fujairah – 140 km from Dubai

I admit that hiking and Dubai aren’t necessarily two things that I would put together, but you’ve highlighted some great looking hikes and outlined some useful tips for the climate, culture and terrain. The Stairway to Heaven hike sounds great!

I wondered how I missed doing hikes in Dubai as I have been there so many times, but then I realised most mountainous ones are in neighbouring emirate states. I can only imagine how hot it must be to hike there – you are brave!

When I think of Dubai, hiking is not the first thing I think of. In fact, I’m rather surprised to learn that there are hikes there. I would love to try out the Starway to Heaven trail.

Things to do in Dubai

Hiking in Dubai: An Outdoor Trip Guide

two man hiking

UAE’s natural topography makes it a premier adventure destination for land-based outdoor activities. It’s majestic mountains, for one, provide the most scenic and challenging trails for hikers.

Hiking in the UAE should be on your list of weekend getaway destinations, whether you’re a local or tourist. Discover the natural wonders of the UAE on foot by yourself or with a group of adventure-seekers with the same goal. In this guide, we’ll help you dive deep into the various hiking trails and communities near Dubai while offering tips and tricks along the way.

Things to Know Before Your First Hiking Activity in the UAE

Hiking is an ideal outdoor activity for families and groups of friends. It’s also a powerful cardio workout with moderate difficulty. If you’re about to plan your first adventure, here are some things you need to know and do before hiking in the UAE.

What it’s Like to Hike in the UAE?

Hiking is a long-distance walk following a specific trail. It can be a form of exercise or natural leisure activity, so it offers a lot of health benefits. Hiking can improve your blood pressure, reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and enhance mental well-being.

UAE’s breathtaking and natural sceneries can give you the proper break you need from the busy city. Using hiking as a natural exercise and leisure activity, you can explore some of the best places and hidden gems of Dubai for free, as part of a group, or with the help of a local tour operator.

Who Can Hike near Dubai?

Hiking is an activity with low to moderate difficulty, depending on the hiking location and duration. It’s recommended to only participate in this activity if you can withstand the challenges involved.

Hiking Age Restrictions

Kids can get started hiking any time. However, parents and guardians should be mindful of the length and duration of the hiking trail. Children ages 0 to 3 can hike up to 2 miles. Children ages 4 to 7 can hike up to 4 miles. Children ages 8+ can hike up to 10 miles, but they shouldn’t carry heavy loads.

If you’re hiking with acquaintances, you can simply follow the appropriate hiking miles for children mentioned in this guide. However, if you’re hiking in Dubai as part of a local group or organization, it’s best to follow their specific age restrictions.

Hiking Backpack Weight Restrictions

There are no weight restrictions for how much you can carry in a hike. After all, it’s your backpack. But a general rule is to carry a loaded backpack that doesn’t weigh more than 20% of your body weight.

Does Hiking Requires Skills and Experience?

Experienced hikers can easily handle long-distance walks in different locations. While first-time hikers would find the activity challenging, hiking doesn’t really require skills and experience. First-timers could improve the outcome of their first experience by improving their flexibility, endurance, and tolerance.

Is Hiking Safe and Regulated in the UAE?

Hiking, on its own, is very safe. It’s the hiking location that you should question. Local authorities regulate popular and registered hiking locations in the UAE. As such, you’ll need permits from local authorities to hike there. However, wilderness areas—even those with trails—are usually not regulated. It’s best to avoid them as you won’t know the dangers they hide until you get trapped in one.

To ensure your safety, don’t ever hike alone, especially if you’re new to Dubai. Always hike in groups or with hiking organizations. Lastly, don’t forget to get permission from operators or local authorities guarding the hiking trail.

COVID-19 Considerations

All tour companies and organizers of mass-participation activities in Dubai follow special health and safety measures to combat COVID-19. Hiking organizers in the UAE are required by the World Health Organization (WHO) and local authorities to ensure social distancing among guests, conduct temperature checks for staff and guests, and promote contactless payments. Some operators may limit the number of participants and visitors per hiking activity.

Hikers, too, are required to follow individual safety protocols. Visitors should wear face masks when hiking, practice social distancing, and avoid physical contact among staff and other hikers, and submit basic personal information and other documents for contact tracing purposes.

When Is the Best Time to Hike in Dubai?

Like other physical exercises and activities, it’s best to hike in the early morning to maximize your trail time. This schedule will also allow you to avoid Dubai’s heat in the afternoon and watch the sunset over the horizon.

It’s not recommended for first-timers or hikers in a new territory to hike at night, even with the proper equipment. Hiking without natural light can be dangerous as it gives you a limited view of your surroundings.

How Long Should You Hike?

The duration of your hike depends on your itinerary or planned activity, the actual hiking location or route, and your tolerance or fitness level. If you’re a first-timer, you should only try hiking under 5 miles with minimal climbing. From there, you can gradually increase your tolerance level and try longer hikes.

Then, make a splash at Wadi Adventure, home to the region's first man-made white-water rafting channels. There’s also kayaking, a surfing wall, wakeboarding, a swimming pool, splash pool and aerial adventure course, including a 200-metre-long zip line and four-metre-high giant swing.

Number of stops

Total Distance

Journey to Abu Dhabi’s tallest peak, Jebel Hafit in Al Ain, for a hike, then enjoy a host of exciting watersports at nearby Wadi Adventure and, finally, top things off with a dose of speed at the Al Ain Raceway, with its 1.6km go-karting track.

Jebel Hafit Mountain

Stop 1

Recommended Time: 3 hours

For incredible sunrise and sunset photos, as well as majestic views of Abu Dhabi’s lush garden city of Al Ain , head to the top of Jebel Hafit mountain (also known as Jebel Hafeet). Rising to a height of 1,249 metres, this skyline-dominating peak is Abu Dhabi’s highest, and the UAE’s second tallest. Reach the summit of this rocky mountain by car, motorbike or, if you have the stamina, bicycle.

Standing guard on the borders of Oman, this Al Ain mountain has been weathered over millennia, with significant fossil discoveries made in the area being vital pieces in the jigsaw that makes up the city’s ancient history.

Once described by edmunds.com (the automotive information online source) as being “among the world’s greatest driving roads”, once you’ve reached the top and soaked up the breathtaking views, you can head over to the nearby Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet Hotel for a meal.

Al Ain Adventure Park

Stop 2

Recommended Time: 4 hours

Al Ain Adventure Park is a fantastic family-friendly adventure park that sits at the base of the majestic and history-rich Jebel Hafit  mountain, Abu Dhabi’s tallest peak, about an hour and a half away from the city in Al Ain .

Home to the Middle East’s first man-made white water rafting channels, measuring 1,100 metres in length and perfect for rafting and kayaking, Al Ain Adventure Park  also has a surfing wall, wakeboarding facilities, swimming pool and splash pool. Action fans will love the park’s exhilarating aerial adventure course that includes an 18-obstacle, two-level airpark, 1,200-metre long zip line, vertical climb line and 14-metre high giant swing.

This venue is also a great option for team building and corporate events, with the Summit Events Centre providing a versatile space for meetings and even birthday parties. Sports professionals from around the world regularly visit the park, which also provides training programmes and complete packages including accommodation and airport transfers.

Day entry costs AED 65 for adults (above 1.2 metres tall), and AED 45 for children.

Al Ain Raceway

Stop 3

Aside from motorsports, cricket, soccer, paintball and other fun, family-friendly activities, the Al Ain Sportplex  is home to the 1.6km Al Ain Raceway, Arabia’s largest go-karting track.

Host to major international events, including the Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals, the biggest annual event on the global karting calendar, this fully floodlit circuit features three distinctive configurations, providing an exhilarating challenge for drivers of all abilities. Open to the public, speed lovers can hone their skills in top-of-the-line Intrepid branded rental karts.

A fantastic venue for team building and other corporate events, exclusive use of the circuit needs to be booked in advance.

Come fall in love with Dubai!

About Dubai

In Dubai, everything is bigger and better. It’s home to the world’s tallest building, the largest mall, the biggest indoor theme park, and the largest Ferris Wheel. The city is constantly evolving under the leadership of the visionary Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

In 2021, Dubai will play host to the World Expo, and there are even more new developments that are expected to launch before that big event.

At the heart of the glitz and glam, however, is a city with a rich cultural heritage. Dubai first made its name as a fishing and pearling village, and as a strategic port on the Persian Gulf. Even with modern developments, the city’s history is still alive in an area where one can savor a cup of traditional coffee, catch a ride on an old-fashioned abra, or shop in the traditional souks .

And much, much more
