For most newlyweds , the honeymoon is the trip of a lifetime. While you may end up taking longer or more far-flung vacations down the road (maybe with your growing family) this first post-wedding getaway—no matter how long it is or how close to home—is an experience unlike any other. It allows you the time to embrace your brand-new marriage, with all the planning and stress of the big day behind you. It also sets the tone for the epic adventures you’ll have in your future. And most importantly, it provides memories that you'll cherish for the rest of your lives.

To help couples make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime trip, we’ve rounded up the top honeymoon destinations of 2024. Whether you’re lie-on-a-beach-with-a-coconut people, adventure-chasers, snow bunnies , or foodies on the hunt for many meals to remember, there is something on this list for everyone. Sure, classic honeymoon destinations like Hawaii , Fiji , and Italy make the cut, but we've also included of some more unexpected destinations, like South Africa and Montana .

Here, find this year's list of the 50 best honeymoon destinations around the world.

Taormina, Sicily

Federico Scotto / Getty Images

In Sicily , you can experience island and Italian vibes—truly the best of both worlds. Hanging right off the toe of Italy’s boot, Sicily straddles the divide between Europe and Africa and is the largest isle in the Mediterranean. Appropriately, the out-of-this-world food isn’t the only thing that’s diverse—there’s architecture, art, and ancient ruins to be explored. Post up in Taormina; we recommend literally any room at the Four Seasons San Domenico Palace , where White Lotus Season 2 was filmed. Use this luxurious escape as your home away from home as you explore this legendary pocket of the Mediterranean, an ideal honeymoon destination. Don’t miss a day trip to Noto, a charming Baroque UNESCO World Heritage site also featured on the show.

Turks and Caicos

Courtesy of Amanyara; Photo by Steve Passmore

Southeast of the Bahamas in the Atlantic Ocean lies Turks and Caicos , not two islands as might be assumed, but a whopping 40. The coral islands (the most popular of which is Providenciales) are the epitome of a tropical escape, with fewer people than many neighboring island nations to keep the countless stark-white beaches free of crowds. Book your trip at the uber-private Amanyara , an exclusive luxury resort perched along the coast of an 18,000-acre nature reserve. You'll be greeted by private infinity pools, ocean-facing villas, a wellness program that could fill at least a week, impeccable service round the clock, and unforgettable meals.

Greenough, Montana

Stuart Thurlkill

While many couples may opt for a full-on ranch-style honeymoon in Montana, we recommend booking accommodations at The Green O , an adults-only, all-inclusive, high-design hideaway owned and operated by The Resort at Paws Up . Located conveniently just down the road from Paws Up, guests at The Green O have access to all the outdoor activities (think horseback riding, paddling, sound baths, and guided fly-fishing) on the staggering 37,000-acre swath of land. It’s like having your own national park to explore! But this cozy upscale property is also the best of both worlds: You and your spouse can snuggle up in one of the 12 intimate, design-forward "hauses” on property. They feature floor-to-ceiling windows, modern fireplaces, and serene soaking tubs in Scandi-chic accommodations.

A sure highlight is dinner at the Social Haus, where foodies can relish the nightly eight-course meal by a James Beard-nominated chef. Whether you're at the Green O for five days or two weeks, there will be no shortage of things to do in all four seasons—plus, top-tier dining experiences and romantic relaxation indoors and out. Pro tip: Don’t miss the tented Spa Town, just a quick jaunt via the private, complimentary Lexus vehicle provided for each couple. From start to finish, this honeymoon destination is a superb mix of adventure meets luxury.

You don’t have to be obsessed with Outlander or The Crown to think Scotland is a prime honeymoon destination. Start in the lowlands, with the diverse, walkable city of Edinburgh. As home bases go, a luxurious hotel like The Balmoral , with its Michelin-starred Number One restaurant, is pretty epic. Don’t miss the world’s first vertical distillery , a brand new offering in the Port of Leith. Then, head up to Loch Lommond, the largest body of water in Scotland, for a couple of nights at Cameron House . This five-star haunt is an old family lake home (er, palace?) and makes a perfect gateway to the highlands. Hit the Isle of Skye next for otherworldly views of land and sea. Dine at Loch Bay , another Michelin-starred spot, hike the Old Man of Storr route, and lay your head at the upscale Kinloch Lodge .

Pro tip: For an extra posh escape, use Brendan Vacations' Private Chaffeur option, which is the best way to enjoy Scotland’s gorgeous countryside and avoid driving on the wrong side of the road.

Natural beauty, sake, sushi, history, culture— Japan balances rich ancient heritage with the modern in its awe-inspiring cities and maintains a vast network of hikes and walks for those more inclined to nature. There’s skiing and shrines, cat cafes, and a stunning coastline. Tokyo is a city that lights up all the senses (consider the deluxe ryokan-style Hoshinoya Tokyo ), while Kyoto boasts more than a dozen UNESCO World Heritage Sites (plus the brand-new and breathtaking Aman Kyoto ). The country boasts a trending chain of tropical coral isles, too—Okinawa, where Hoshinoya Taketomi Island gives a peek into traditional Japanese island life, and the new resort Halekulani Okinawa celebrates authentic culture and nature immersions.

Mexico City, Mexico

Getty Images

The World Design Capital of 2018 speaks to aesthetes, art lovers, and couples for whom food is a big deal. Mexico’s capital city has only increased exponentially in appeal over the last few years as its foodie, nightlife, and gallery and museum scenes have all exploded. Strategizing (and scoring reservations) in advance is key to enjoying world-renowned restaurants like Pujol, Sud 777, and Merkavá. Top luxury hotel brands like St. Regis and Four Seasons have outposts that are glamorous and grand, and the beautifully boutiquey Las Alcobas also provides the perfect place to snuggle up after long days of indulgence.

Is there a more classic island honeymoon destination than Fiji ? It’s hard to imagine something better than hopping between five-star resorts on the South Pacific’s 300-plus islands, filled with white sand, palm trees, mountains, and blue lagoons. For a dose of heaven on earth, visit Tokoriki Island Resort Fiji , an adults-only retreat that epitomizes romance in this far-flung destination. Guests can feel right at home in the heart of this South Pacific paradise, nestled into one of 36 free-standing beachfront villas (complete with ocean-facing infinity pools), each with immaculate attention to Fijian design. Nightly champagne and fresh seafood, ample opportunity for romantic experiences (like dinner on the property's own jetty), and an award-winning immersive spa make for the honeymoon of a lifetime. More interested in diving, snorkeling, and an authentic taste of Fiji’s rich, hospitable culture? Head to remote Savusavu Island for a stay at Jean Michel Cousteau Resort .

Do you and your partner share an intense curiosity about the world? If so, a simple beach holiday won’t do. Think about exploring somewhere exotic like Morocco . In Marrakech, a Berber-era medieval walled city, you’ll dine on mouthwatering dishes, navigate the maze-like souks holding hands, watch storytellers and musicians perform, and feast your eyes on spectacular architecture and design. You can stay like kings at the palatial pink Amanjena , or go a bit more traditional in the beautiful city of Fes, at chic Riad Fes . Richard Branson’s Kasbah Tamadot is a gorgeous home base for hiking the Atlas Mountains, and Essaouira is the most charming seaside village with camels on the beach and plenty of twisting cobbled paths to explore.

The Amalfi Coast, Italy

There are many reasons the Amalfi Coast continues to be at the top of honeymooners’ bucket lists. It’s hard to picture a more classically romantic scene than Positano’s steep village streets, Moorish architecture, azure water, and colorful loungers and umbrellas lining the sandy beaches. Glamour comes easily, especially at the five-star Le Sirenuse , where the formula for a sexy, sophisticated getaway is tried and true. Italy’s “Divine Coast” lives up to its name as one of the world’s best classic, and divine, honeymoon destinations.

Courtesy of Asilia

An East Africa safari is surely a bucket list endeavor—and one of the world’s ultimate honeymoon destinations. Home to the world’s largest game reserve, honeymooners can see it all in Tanzania: the big five, cheetahs, giraffes, the Great Migration, and so much more. Do it right with multiple Asilia properties in one trip. Tackle the Serengheti two ways: first, with the all-female staffed Dunia Camp , and then spend the next few days at the luxurious Namiri Plains Camp . If you stay more than seven nights with Asilia, you earn free inter-camp travel, which is an incredible perk!

Courtesy of Bisate Lodge

If the adventure of a lifetime is your honeymoon goal, gorilla trekking in Rwanda—with overnights at a completely heavenly lodge—should be at the top of the list. Wildlife safaris are almost always life-changing, but seeing gorillas up close in their habitat is a whole different proposition. Bisate Lodge and Singita Kwitonda Lodge are right next to Volcanoes National Park’s ancient rainforest and offer pampering plus more active experiences than a newlywed duo could possibly take in. In Akagera National Park, Magashi Camp offers the chance to gaze at lion prides and black rhino. And in Kigali, The Retreat at Heaven is the place for resort-style digs and enlightening artisanal and cultural tours.

Paris, France

Talk about a no-brainer. Paris is the City of Lights, but it might as well be called the City of Love. If you appreciate a great romantic walk hand-in-hand, you’ll love the French capital, which offers culture, architecture and art alongside, of course, incredible food and wine. From iconic luxury stalwarts like the Four Seasons George V and Le Royal Monceau—Raffles Paris to impeccably designed new boutique hotels such as Hotel Providence Paris , you can tailor a honeymoon to your style, whether it’s classic and fancy or more boho and artsy. Extend your French honeymoon with some time in a quieter region. The alpine lakes and rich food scene of the Auvergne-Rhone-Alps region is a perfect addition to any Parisian honeymoon.

Bali, Indonesia

A honeymoon in Bali is pure magic. The Indonesian island—the only one in the huge country that’s Hindu—is a perfect place for passion. With a bit more of an exotic feel than the tropical islands closer to the US, Bali doesn’t only offer unspoiled beaches, surfing, snorkeling and massages, it’s full of culture, art, music, rice terraces and temples, many, many temples. Nature is celebrated here, and it’s easy to get into the spirit at unbelievably lush properties such as Four Seasons Bali at Sayan and Mandapa, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve for jungle vibes, and Uluwatu Surf Villas or Mulia Villas for coastal bliss.

For an active honeymoon, Canada’s cool seaport of Vancouver and nearby Vancouver Island have a lot to offer. The destination's unique setting, surrounded by mountains and also water, makes it popular for a number of outdoor adventures, but it’s also known for its lively art and music scenes. Whatever you choose to spend your days doing—from the confines of the chic city-centric Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel or Tofino’s romantic, forested Wickaninnish Inn —the natural beauty can’t be topped.

If off-the-beaten-path is your couple style, this South Asian gem is the way to go. Sandwiched between India and China, it’s a magical country with its own identity and topography, although anyone who’s been to one of those spots knows natural beauty is a sure thing. The miniature kingdom in the Himalayas is epic for trekking and has retained quite a sense of culture thanks to its remoteness and subtle Western influence. Explore Buddhist monasteries, jaw-dropping panoramas, and fortresses as you make your way from one valley to the next.

Cape Cod and Nantucket, Massachusetts

If you're craving a coastal getaway but want to stay domestic, Cape Cod and Nantucket will most certainly fit the bill—and exceed all of your expectations. Spend a few nights cozied into the Chatham Bars Inn , a legendary property that boasts sumptuous, waterfront accommodations, an incredible spa, and multiple seafood-centric restaurants. After a week of exploring all the Cape has to offer (don't forget to take a day trip to Provincetown and post up for a day at Nauset Beach!) take the ferry 30 miles out to sea to Nantucket, arguably the chicest island in the U.S. Tuck into the five-star Wauwinet and spend your days biking around this 14-mile-long island, dining on the daily fresh catch, and strolling the cobblestone streets of historic downtown (replete with trendy restaurants, amazing sunset views, cute shops, and endless art galleries).

Buenos Aires, Argentina

If you venture to Argentina for your honeymoon, prepare to do the super sensual tango. The nightlife in the capital city is famously fabulous, and people come from all around the world to dance. Enjoy all the vibrant culture, local grill-focused cuisine and vivid, photogenic surroundings from a bicycle—bike lanes cover most of the city—or your temporary home in a sexy, well-designed place like Faena Hotel Buenos Aires or deluxe Four Seasons Hotel Buenos Aires .

South Africa

With the US dollar stronger than the South African rand, your dollars stretch a bit farther in this city at the southernmost point of Africa. Beautiful hotels and intimate guesthouses—some of the most epic include design-forward The Silo and resort-y One&Only Cape Town —provide impeccable service and serve as home base for exploring Cape Town’s gorgeous peaks and mountains, coastline, and wildlife, from penguins to baboons. Enjoy fantastic wine (hit La Residence in Franschhoek) and adrenaline-pumping adventure (cage diving with great whites!), to name just a few draws. Be sure to plan for a safari while in South Africa, too. The ultimate honeymoon splurge is a private villa (complete with your own butler and sommelier) at Cheetah Plains in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve near Kruger National Park. Schedule an in-room massage and elevated multi-course wine pairing dinner to add a dose of romance to a traditional safari experience. Bonus: This carbon negative property is a sustainability leader, too, with super quiet EVs that let you get close to the animals without disturbing them.

Cartagena, Colombia

What is now Cartagena was colonized by Spain in the 16th century. Today it is a vacation destination on Colombia’s Caribbean coast with cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and live music at every turn. There’s romance all around, especially at night when it’s salsa time. Stay in one of the gentrifying port city’s best boutique hotels—lush Casa Lola or the beautifully restored Hotel Casa San Agustin —and make it a point to visit the surrounding islands. Casa San Agustin’s new ACASĪ Experience takes lovers on a private boat charter to paradisiacal Isla Barú for lunch on a white sand beach fringed by turquoise water and palms.

The appeal of Colorado is simple: It’s stunning in the winter, blanketed in super-romantic snow, and it’s stunning in the summer when the white stuff has melted and left behind verdant, bucolic scenes. Active types have no shortage of fun to get into, especially if basing themselves at Vail’s Hotel Talisa, a ski-in/ski-out property where the service is so great they’ll actually bring the chapstick you left in the room to the top of the mountain for you. In Breckenridge, you’ll find the sleek and social new ski-in/ski-out Gravity Haus , complete with a Japanese-style onsen. Meanwhile, Beaver Creek boasts the five-star mountaintop getaway Trappers Cabin , where honeymooners can hike, bike, and hot tub in style.

For a classic city break, stay at the posh Clayton Hotel & Members Club in Cherry Creek. It offers upscale accommodations, plus a walkable location in the heart of Denver’s cutest neighborhood. For a more old-school hotel pick, head south to the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs. This grand dame hotel has a storied history, gorgeous rooms, a lovely spa, and multiple on-site eateries. Pro tip: Don’t sleep on the burgeoning wine scene on the Western Slope. Stay in Grand Junction at the Hotel Maverick , the perfect base for exploring nearby Paonia and Palisade, the two cutest “wine country” towns. Colorado offers so much as a honeymoon destination!

It may be a struggle to pronounce most of the words in Denmark’s capital, but that's half the fun. The gorgeous Scandinavian home of the Little Mermaid sculpture, grand castles, and tons of hyper-influential design is easily navigable and intimate. Beyond the city take day trips to hike in wooded Edens, and by night cuddle up at a top hotel like the iconic Hotel d’Angleterre with your one true love in hygge style, with an excess of candles, wine, sweets, and a fire roaring in the background.

The Pacific side of Costa Rica has everything for nature and adventure enthusiasts. Santa Teresa is a tiny beach town with plenty of surfing to mellow the vibe. There’s wildlife everywhere, the ocean is warm, the waves are perfect and the rainforest above the beach is home to creative kitchens and boutique hotels such as Florblanca Resort and Milarepa . Farther north, on Peninsula Papagayo, is Hyatt’s Andaz Costa Rica Resort , with a full slate of activities and a profusion of ways to get into the wild and connect with each other and nature. Up on a quartz mountain overlooking the Pacific Ocean is The Retreat Costa Rica , a go-to for all things spa, healing, and organic gardens.

Whether you want to explore magical crystalline terraced lakes and waterfalls, check out historical sites and ruins, sail around on a yacht, tour cathedrals or even go wild partying, Croatia is the place to do it. The country that stretches down the Mediterranean offers a Greek Isle-like flavor but with its own unique culture and look. Superbly designed sea-view spots like Villa Dubrovnik are what this authentic, unspoiled destination is all about.

Cyclades, Greece

This group of islands in the Aegean Sea includes favorites like Santorini (where Grace Santorini is fresh off a gorgeous renovation) and Mykonos, home to the new swoon-worthy, entirely farm-to-table Nesaea restaurant. There are also important archaeological ruins, stunning sunset vistas, and up-and-coming islands like Paros and Folegrandos, where you can experience the beauty of your surroundings with fewer faces around. Even better, explore the whole region by 104-foot luxury yacht with Entre Cielos .

Baja California, Mexico

For West Coasters, especially, there’s no simpler honeymoon destination than Baja California , the peninsula representing some of the best of Mexico. There you’ll find all the hallmarks of an authentic Mexican village in San Jose del Cabo, paired with dozens of pristine beaches for above and underwater activities, and divine resorts such as elegantly minimalist favorite Las Ventanas al Paraíso , shiny new Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal or Viceroy Los Cabos , and rooftop-studded The Cape . The less-traveled East Cape, with somehow even more spectacular seascapes and a major escapist vibe, is now home to the just-debuted Four Seasons Resort Los Cabos at Costa Palmas and Zadún, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve . Just over the border in bougainvillea-laden Valle de Guadalupe is some of the best wine and food imaginable, not to mention cool accommodations (see Cabañas Cuatro Cuartos and El Cielo Winery & Resort ), with very reasonable price tags.

There are rivers and streams, waterfalls, hot sulfur springs, and a boiling lake, not to mention the Caribbean Sea, in Dominica, making it a water baby’s playground. The region’s longest hiking trail is also an option. Eco-resorts are hitting big after Hurricane Maria devastated the island, and it’s now a haven for jungle-y adventures (like canyoning in Titou Gorge), relaxation (see the mud pools of Wotten Waven Hot Springs), whale watching, and beautiful new hotels including  Jungle Bay ,  Secret Bay , and  Cabrits Resort & Spa Kempinski .

The hurricanes that devastated much of the Caribbean left this under-the-radar little paradise known as Spice Island totally untouched. The timing was good, as there are quite a few luxe resorts in the works, with the first major resort opening on Grand Anse Beach for decades last year. The  Silversands Hotel  has the longest pool in the Caribbean, but don’t expect to spend all your days there—the isle is packed with promise in the form of picturesque beaches on which to lounge, colorful culture and cuisine to try, and rainforests to explore. This Caribbean gem is only getting sparklier, with the addition of the unreal Six Senses La Sagesee , coming in May 2024.

guenterguni

There’s something to be said for the simplicity of a beach resort honeymoon, but if you’re a duo who seeks something more, there may be nothing more epic than a Galapagos adventure . The favorite destination of Charles Darwin’s offers outdoorsy types the ultimate opportunity to soak up an exotic dose of nature. There are several options for an island experience off the coast of Ecuador, one being a cruise, ideally on a small ship or mega-yacht like Ecoventura’s brand-new luxury-meets-eco-friendly Theory, which sails around the northern or southern islands for a week at a time, with snorkeling, standup paddleboard and kayaking gear, and naturalists on board. There’s also Pikaia Lodge , a bucket-list luxury destination with a sustainable culinary program, coffee they grow themselves, an infinity pool, spa, and carbon-neutral hotel rooms.

The debate between Sydney and Melbourne is like the one between Los Angeles and  New York —but there are so many other parts of this great island nation, too. In the former stay at the  QT Bondi  to work on your golden tan, or the newish  Old Clare Hotel  for an urban adventure. After checking out foodie mecca Melbourne’s divine restaurant scene and mural-filled laneways hit the artsy  Jackalope Hotel  for wine-country immersion on the Mornington Peninsula. Western Australia has a lot to offer, with buzzy Perth giving honeymooners bang for their buck, Rottnest Island offering up adorable quokkas and Chris Hemsworth–approved glamping at  Discovery Rottnest Island , and the outback and ocean adventures in the Kimberley and Ningaloo Reef. And it’s hard to find more idyllic beaches than those in the Whitsundays, of course.

Parts of Guatemala resemble Antigua with cobblestone streets and colorful buildings, and other areas are thick with rainforests and layered with volcanos. Explore the land's history by visiting ancient Mayan ruins as well as several museums in Guatemala City, which buzzes with nightlife after the sun sets. Get away from civilization at Casa Palopó on Lake Atitlan or in casitas on stilts at Francis Ford Coppola’s lakeside La Lancha , where friendly howler monkeys will lull you to sleep—or wake you up for a beautiful day in the rainforest.

Iceland  is for adventurers. Its lengthy list of attractions includes the spectacular Northern Lights in the wintertime (stay at  Ion  for an impeccable viewpoint), seemingly endless opportunities for trekking, riding the country’s famously tiny but strong horses, exploration of caves, volcanos, ice fields, and glaciers; and steamy hot springs and lagoons—the new  Retreat at Blue Lagoon  is the place to sleep and play at the most iconic of them all, with a spa built into the volcanic earth and a five-star restaurant. The land of fire and ice may be cold, but there’s enough adrenaline and romance to keep you hot.

Lanai, Hawaii

M Swiet Productions

It’s part of Hawaii , of course, but the landscape on Lanai is so otherworldly in parts it’ll make you feel like you traveled to another planet. Options abound: Ride horses up to the pines, or spend the day tooling around the rugged roads in a 4x4 Jeep, snorkeling around spinner dolphins, picnicking with super fresh poke, swimming in the cerulean sea and posing amid the lunar-like rocks of Garden of the Gods. Beyond the famous poke, there’s plenty of goodness to eat and imbibe at the Four Seasons Resort Lanai . And now the all-inclusive wellness-oriented Four Seasons Lanai at Koele , a Sensei Resort, has opened, adding a deluxe new way to relax and rejuvenate mind, body, and spirit.

This underrated African island makes for a truly spectacular honeymoon destination. There is everything from whale watching to deserted white sand beaches and lemurs to luxury lodges. The terrain is hugely varied and includes rainforest, open savannah, highlands, and desert, with lots of cultures to explore in between. The ultimate stay is at Miavana by Time + Tide , an ultra-luxe retreat on picture-perfect Nosy Ankao, where you can explore the depths of the Indian Ocean while diving, get high above it in helicopters, and track down translocated crowned lemurs in the forest, all while overnighting in dreamy digs and dining on five-star cuisine.

Hear about the Maldives and you instantly think of a honeymoon. The tropical South Asian nation is made up of 26 coral atolls in the Indian Ocean, which means unlimited beaches, turquoise waters for miles, extensive reefs, and plenty of fresh fish and seafood. You’re pretty secluded at whichever of the luxurious resorts you choose—such as the Four Seasons dream collection and pioneering, super-private Soneva Fushi —so expect a vacation filled with intimate meals, spa treatments, underwater adventures, and just plain relaxation.

Ph. Francesco Ciccotti

Tall sand dunes, a ridiculously expansive desert, and the world’s largest free-roaming black rhino population: Namibia represents a world of both grandiosity and serenity. The southern African nation isn’t your typical safari stop, it’s so much more. New lodges and camps like the hyper-luxe and relaxing Omaanda , remote beachfront Shipwreck Lodge , and authentic in-the-bush Hoanib Valley Camp provide experiences you literally won’t be able to forget.

Napa Valley, California

Sonoma’s buzz overtook its Northern Cali neighbor for a while, but  Napa  is experiencing a moment once again, with a slew of beautiful boutique boltholes—the intimate, experiential Ink House and stunning  Las Alcobas —and even a beer-tasting trail. The most known American wine country is full of charm, not to mention game-changing vino and iconic restaurants (anywhere by Thomas Keller), such as those at  Calistoga Ranch .  Four Seasons Napa Valley  recently bowed, as did  Vista Collina , a resort with its own Food & Wine Center, bringing couples who love the culinary arts options beyond imagination. Beyond the wine, you can relax at plentiful spas, or if you’re feeling outdoorsy there are hikes through redwoods and near lakes. For the contemporary luxe new kid on the block, couples should consider Stanly Ranch, Auberge Resorts Collection . Its massive spa complex makes for a beautiful honeymoon backdrop, and it’s perfectly situated in the southern reaches of the county, making it a prime base to explore both Napa and neighboring Sonoma.

North Island, New Zealand

New Zealand ’s adventure hub of Queenstown is beloved in the south, but its massive North Island has equal if lesser-known opportunities to discover jaw-dropping scenes and sights. Waiheke Island, close to Auckland, is one charming option. Another is Northland, with lush green landscapes and cliffs over the Pacific and Tasmanian Seas. Go for 6,000 acres of farmland in the Bay of Islands with award-winning golf, ancient kauri forests, and private beaches at The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs . The Farm at Cape Kidnappers further down the island in Hawke’s Bay puts you smack in the middle of primo wine country, not to mention natural beauty.

Domestic getaways can run the risk of feeling less exciting than international, but in and around Oregon, there’s so much going on that’s not a problem. With countless parks and bike paths, gardens, a hip music-and-art scene, a major airport, and trendy microbreweries and restaurants, Portland is a great spot to kick off an Oregon escape. Base yourself at the sophisticated The Nines in Portland to start. Or, for a fancier stay, check out The Ritz-Carlton , a brand new offering in the city. In the Gorge area, there’s the natural beauty of snowy Mount Hood, countless waterfalls and wildflower hikes, and the cutest B&B, Sakura Ridge . Make sure to dine at Hiyu Wine Farm near Mt. Hood for farm-to-table goodness with Michelin star roots. In wine country, stay at the Tributary Hotel in McMinnville, a luxury boutique spot with an awesome on-site eatery. Check out nearby Humble Spirit for another delightful locally-sourced meal, Durant for wine and olive oil tasting, and Remy for a rad queer-owned winery.

Puerto Rico

Megan Vazquez / EyeEm

Puerto Rico has come back even better than ever. The spirit of Puerto Ricans shines bright in the island paradise, known as the island of enchantment. Resorts are reopening at a rapid pace, with the birthplace of the piña colada, Caribe Hilton , coming back online on an exclusive, lush peninsula with views of San Juan’s shore. After a $60 million renovation, St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort bows again, the first ultra-luxury resort on the island, and one surrounded by sea, sand, and foliage with private bird sanctuaries, an on-site marine biologist, ocean-front Robert Trent Jones Jr. golf course, plenty of activities (think kayaking, windsurfing, fishing, hiking and SUP), and several dining outlets.

Rajasthan, India

Known as a vibrant destination for Holi, the ancient Hindu festival, Rajasthan is a dynamic place to visit anytime. Experience contrasts the likes of which you’ve never seen by visiting both rural villages and cities such as Jaipur, the capital, known as the Pink City. Go tiger trekking in the desert and tour striking architecture. And live like queens and kings at the pink palace hotel Amanbagh , the one-time Mughal royal retreat. Along with the usual luxury trappings, you can even learn the most exotic of sports, camel polo.

Sacred Valley, Peru

Courtesy of Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba

Nestled in Peru’s Andean highlands, the Sacred Valley comprises gorgeous valley towns like Urubamba and Aguas Calientes, where one travels to ascend Machu Picchu. Understandably, a honeymoon in this unique destination is for those who live to enjoy nature in all its glory. Both Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba and Tambo del Inka are flawless resorts that marry an eco-aware spirit with thrilling activities, cultural traditions, and pure luxury. Make sure not to have too many pisco sours—alcohol doesn’t exactly help altitude sickness.

Switzerland

Between Zurich’s excess of chocolate, flowers, and lingerie—not to mention art, Michelin-starred food, and supreme TLC at The Dolder Grand —and the Swiss Alps’ extreme beauty, world-class skiing, and year-round natural attractions, Switzerland has plenty attracting newlyweds. The UNESCO-protected Lavaux wine region is another major crowd-pleaser, looking over Lake Geneva and showcasing not only incredible vino but also epic hikes, floating restaurants (see Le Montreux steamboat ), chocolate houses, and Europe’s only overwater hotel. Hotel Palafitte channels Tahiti but on Lake Neuchatel, with ladders from the bungalows plunging you directly into the water.

Give credit to Crazy Rich Asians , or don’t, but Singapore’s steady rise does seem tied to everybody’s favorite romantic comedy of 2018. Still, what’s crazy about the land of insanely good eats is the hospitality boom and the number of amazing new hotels that have opened recently. There’s the JW Marriott Singapore South Beach , designed by Philippe Starck, a Hotel Indigo , a Sofitel on the beachy island of Sentosa, an Andaz near Chinatown, and M Social , also conceived by Starck. Four Seasons just renovated their rooms, and increased flights mean ever easier access from America.

Taha’a, French Polynesia

Bora Bora , just in the distance, tends to get all the attention, but there’s something special about Taha’a, too. The French Polynesian isle is known for not only vanilla—that seductive spice that also scents the air in the most amazing way—but also produces rum and black pearls, all of which are attractive propositions.  Le Taha’a Island Resort & Spa , a Relais & Chateaux property, is the top choice for either a dreamy and expansive overwater bungalow or beach perch and has the best access to the ultimate drift snorkeling destination of Coral Garden.

If you’d thought about Georgia, last year’s trending destination, this year consider Slovenia, the Central European country of castles, verdant fields, snow-capped peaks, thermal springs, and the continent's greenest city, Ljubljana. It’s a place that’s still not overburdened by tourists, meaning you’ll enjoy getting to make your way through it a bit like pioneers. Slovenia makes its debut in the Michelin Gastronomic Guide, proof of its blossoming and widespread foodie scene. In the Julian Alps, sleep at the just reopened digital detox retreat Sunrose 7 , or near an organic chocolate factory overnight in the glamping units of Chocolate Village .

Rainforests, beaches, Buddhist ruins, wildlife, cities, and citadels—for such a tiny country, Sri Lanka offers an incredible amount of diversity to visitors. The exotic island in the middle of the Indian Ocean is rugged but also polished, with cuisine that represents a melting pot of cultures. Honeymooners can visit temples, go backpacking, or on safari in national parks and surf. Settle into the lush, LEED-certified solar farm-slash-boutique hotel Ulagalla or stay at the newest chic spot on the coast, the wellness-minded Tri Lanka , in Galle.

London can be just as alluring as Bora Bora if you’re a couple who’s enchanted by strolls in Hyde Park, world-class museums, celebrated restaurants, and plenty of culture, not to mention the idea of royalty. The posh destination has some of the finest accommodations in the world—consider  The Connaught  or  The Savoy —which, of course, sets the tone for romance. The countryside feels like being in a storybook: Try a chic, cozy cabin at  Soho Farmhouse , a stately manor room at  Heckfield Place  in the heart of Jane Austen country, or a room in a 350-year-old castle,  Cliveden House , where Meghan Markle spent her last night as a single commoner.

Austin, Texas

Are you a little bit of a hipster? Do you love music? Is your mouth watering thinking about barbecue? Get yourselves to the coolest city in the Lone Star State, which may not be known for romance but does have its spots, like Mount Bonnell and Lake Travis at sunset. Otherwise, stay at the trendy bungalow-style  Hotel San Jose  (or for a bucolic stay outside the city, the luxury spa resort  Travaasa Austin ) and spend time trying food trucks, seeing shows, and window-shopping on South Congress.

Antigua & Barbuda

Westend61/Getty Images

Pastel facades, bustling markets, tropical fruits, limestone formations, and, of course, plenty of pristine beaches: Antigua and Barbuda are essentially Eden. Between the two islands, you can find yourselves alone on powdery white sand, or on a catamaran sailing between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea at sunset. Head to all-inclusive resorts such as the opulent and recently renovated  Curtain Bluff  (where tennis, sailing, water-skiing, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and bocce are included), along with once-in-a-lifetime private-island (literally) getaways like  Jumby Bay Island .

Vietnam has it all: Beaches, culture, Buddhist pagodas, rivers, and sophisticated cities. And the food. There are also French colonial remnants of Vietnam's French colonization. Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) and Hanoi are major metropolises while Hoi An, Mui Ne, and Hue offer more rural charm along with art and sandy coastlines that are as pristine as any island. Try the Six Senses Ninh Van Bay for a secluded coastal hideaway, and Four Seasons Resort The Nam Hai for a bit more accessibility. The Southeast Asian country is fairly large, so you might want to consider road trips to experience the most varied markets, treks, cuisine, and temples.

What is a honey trap? Conservative MP William Wragg targeted by scammers

T welve men are now known to have been the targets of a potential "honey trap" scandal that has engulfed Westminster politics , one of them being a minister in the government.

At least six Westminster workers, including a senior Labour MP, four party employees, and a political journalist, were the targets of unsolicited texts from two suspicious mobile numbers belonging to individuals going by the names "Abi" or "Charlie", according to a report released by POLITICO on April 3.

After the news broke out, senior Conservative MP William Wragg disclosed that he was "manipulated" into giving a man he met on the gay dating app Grindr the personal phone numbers of his coworkers after sending him private photos of himself.

On Friday, the Met stated that its officers were "in contact" with Leicestershire Police and parliament security regarding the reported scandal after politicians and their staff were concerned about being blackmailed.

What is a honey trap?

A honey trap is a scam whereby someone appealing tricks someone else into disclosing information or acting rashly.

There have been several cases with this scam with the most recent headlines involving Conservative MP William Wragg.

The Commons Public Administration Committee Chairman, MP Wragg, expressed his shock and dismay after exchanging numbers with a man on Grindr who "had compromising things on me".

He told  the Times : “I got chatting to a guy on an app and we exchanged pictures. We were meant to meet up for drinks, but then didn’t. Then he started asking for numbers of people. I was worried because he had stuff on me. He gave me a WhatsApp number, which doesn’t work now.

“I’ve hurt people by being weak. I was scared. I’m mortified. I’m so sorry that my weakness has caused other people hurt.

“They wouldn’t leave me alone. They would ask for people. I gave them some numbers, not all of them. I told him to stop. He’s manipulated me and now I’ve hurt other people.”

The MP has confirmed he is standing down at the next election.

It has been advised that  MPs who are being blackmailed to get in touch with the authorities rather than their party.

The Top 45 Honeymoon Destinations for 2024—and Beyond

Where to go, where to stay, and what to do for your trip of a lifetime.

preview for 10 Non-Traditional Honeymoon Destinations

Could there be a more romantic holiday than the honeymoon? For this reason it really requires thoughtful planning and a well-padded budget. And given you're only going to do it once (well, in theory at least), we're of the persuasion that a honeymoon should be a grand affair—why take one week when you can take off three? Why settle for one destination when you can combine multiple stops? Tanzania and Tuscany, perhaps. Or Patagonia and Fiji.

Santa Barbara, California

With its charming Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and balmy Mediterranean climate, Santa Barbara ranks high on the list for romantics who want a city-meets-beach escape that is also convenient to access. Plus, for oenophiles, there is picturesque, winery-strewn Santa Ynez Valley, less than an hour away. As for where to stay, there is nothing more romantic than San Ysidro Ranch , the gorgeously landscaped idyllic hideaway where JFK and Jackie spent their honeymoon, and where countless celebrities, from Winston Churchill to John Huston, have sought refuge.

Kohala Coast, Big Island, Hawaii

Aerial view of the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island

Hawaii and honeymoon are rather synonymous, but venture off the beaten path a little bit and head to Big Island, arguably the state's least commercialized—and most authentic—island. Stay at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, a mid-century, open floor plan masterpiece from Laurance S. Rockefeller that features cantilevered stairways, a museum-worthy collection of Asian Pacific Art, and a pretty slice of beach with sand as smooth as silk.

Best cheap honeymoon destinations for 2024.

When you embark on your first vacation as spouses, you may not have a lot of cash to burn on an extravagant honeymoon – especially after a costly wedding. But just because you're on a budget doesn't mean you can't find your dream destination for this once-in-a-lifetime trip. Considering expert opinion, romantic ambiance, accommodation costs and more, U.S. News compiled the best cheap honeymoon destinations around the world. On this list, you'll find a combination of classic honeymoon destinations and affordable alternatives to notoriously pricey locales. Don't forget to vote for your favorites below to contribute to next year's ranking.

Turks & Caicos

Cook islands, puerto vallarta, olympic national park.

honey trip

Though costs on this idyllic Caribbean archipelago can add up, the Turks and Caicos Islands can be an affordable honeymoon destination with some planning. Book a late spring getaway to save money while still enjoying pleasantly sunny weather. And if your heart isn't set on a beachfront resort, staying inland can save hundreds per night. The biggest draw? All Turks and Caicos beaches are free to access, so you can spend your days lazing on the pristine white sands of Grace Bay Beach or snorkeling the Bight Reef without spending a cent.

honey trip

Jamaica's affordable all-inclusive resorts , accessibility and inexpensive attractions make it a top choice for newlyweds who don't want to overspend. When you're not basking in post-wedding bliss on the powdery sands of Seven Mile Beach, Jamaica's prime free attraction, explore the underground lake at Green Grotto Caves or sample cheap eats at local jerk joints. To save even more on your trip, book a vacation package that includes flights, or consider a Caribbean cruise to cost-effectively add more destinations to your trip.

honey trip

With live oak trees, picturesque squares and Victorian architecture, Savannah serves up a dreamy honeymoon setting. Beyond its pretty face, this Georgia city also boasts an intriguing history and a decadent food scene. Spend your getaway meandering through the Savannah Historic District, touring well-preserved mansions and picnicking in Forsyth Park. When the sun sets, sit down to a Lowcountry dinner before heading to a rooftop bar for a cocktail. If you need more incentive, cheap flights to Savannah are easy to come by, and the city's romantic inns and bed-and-breakfasts won't break the bank.

honey trip

Looking to honeymoon in a tropical bungalow without the Bora Bora bill? Malaysia's Langkawi archipelago is home to stunning villas and rainforest retreats for a fraction of the cost. Langkawi consists of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea (four of which are inhabited), making it ideal for inexpensive island-hopping excursions when you're not lounging poolside. Plus, you can pick up some essentials at Langkawi Island's legendary duty-free shops to save even more. Before you leave, take your relationship to new heights as you walk across the Langkawi Sky Bridge for just more than $1 per person.

honey trip

Wine, music and a scenic riverfront – Porto has all the trappings of a romantic European vacation. And as one of the cheapest destinations on the continent, this Portuguese city is approachable for budget-conscious travelers (hotel rates average $80 per night, for example). By day, you and your sweetheart can admire Porto's tiled facades, ogle the Dom Luís I Bridge from the lively Cais da Ribeira neighborhood or tour port wine lodges. Spend your evenings at cozy, family-owned restaurants before attending a fado show at a club or a concert at Casa da Música.

honey trip

Many a honeymoon postcard has been sent from Santorini or Mykonos . But on Andros – another Cycladic island – you'll find similar Greek island identifiers (think: dreamy whitewashed architecture, open-air restaurants and cliffside hotels) at a much lower cost. Without the influx of tourists that its neighbors receive, Andros also offers a more authentic Greek experience, so spend time strolling hand in hand through quaint villages like Chora. Aside from its sandy beaches and shimmering water, Andros offers a host of cheap cultural attractions like the Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art and ancient ruins such as the Springs of Dionysus.

honey trip

For those who want a budget-friendly Thailand honeymoon without compromising luxury, Ko Samui fits the bill. Honeymoon packages abound, so newlyweds can get great rates on high-end beachside hotels. Ko Samui is home to dozens of beautiful beaches (some of the best in Thailand ), meaning couples can easily find a palm-fringed stretch of sand to meet their needs. Other affordable activities include kiteboarding or Jet Skiing, snorkeling in Ang Thong National Marine Park or working up a sweat during a jungle hike. Just be prepared to share your experiences with other travelers; this island is popular year-round, but especially in winter.

honey trip

This small Central American country features lush jungles, sandy beaches, coral reefs and luxurious digs to rival more frequented Caribbean locales. Lovebirds can snorkel or sip rum punch on Ambergris Caye, a popular Belize island; admire Mayan ruins like Xunantunich; or hike past caves, mountains and waterfalls on the cheap. Plus, Belize's top honeymoon resorts boast swoon-worthy thatched casitas and indulgent amenities like private hot tubs. While honeymooners will need to shell out several hundred dollars per night for the swankiest resorts, many offer all-inclusive packages , and there are a bevy of more affordable options for those willing to sacrifice some perks.

honey trip

A romantic getaway to this resort town in the Dominican Republic means hardly having to leave your beach chair, let alone your resort. Between all-inclusive, adults-only lodging options and honeymoon packages, couples are sure to find a deal, especially once the winter rush has subsided. Though this tried-and-true honeymoon locale may not have the most exclusive feel, many resorts pamper newlyweds with extras like spa credits, sparkling wine and fresh flowers. With food and drinks taken care of, honeymooners can spend extra cash on a private boat excursion or a sunset horseback ride.

honey trip

In Costa Rica, adventure chasers can find cheap thrills by admiring wildlife in Manuel Antonio National Park, hiking through cloud forests or renting kayaks on the Osa Peninsula (skip the guided tours and explore on your own to shave off costs). Meanwhile, couples who prioritize relaxation can find the nearest Caribbean or Pacific beach, all of which are free to the public, or luxuriate in the hot springs near Arenal, an active volcano. For the most pampering honeymoon experience, bed down at one of Costa Rica's all-inclusive resorts .

honey trip

Often touted as the most affordable South Pacific islands, the Cook Islands hold their own against the likes of Fiji and Tahiti when it comes to striking, unspoiled scenery and a sense of seclusion. Those envisioning a far-flung honeymoon destination with powdery white sand beaches, turquoise lagoons and lush mountains can find that and more on this 15-island archipelago. Resort luxury is certainly less ostentatious here than on other South Pacific islands, a trade-off that's easy to swallow when beachside resorts and cottages are available for less than $200 a night on popular islands like Rarotonga and Aitutaki.

honey trip

With amenity-filled resorts lining Mexico's Pacific Coast, Puerto Vallarta is a haven for beachgoers looking for a carefree and cheap tropical vacation . Deal seekers can easily find beachside resorts for just more than $100 per night, many of which also offer all-inclusive rate options. Beyond the resorts' sandy shores and swim-up bars, honeymooners can explore Puerto Vallarta's charming Romantic Zone, visit a distillery for a tequila tasting or venture out on the water for a whale watching tour.

honey trip

Paris is an incomparable honeymoon destination, but couples looking for a cheaper French experience will not be settling when they opt for Lyon – especially when it comes to cuisine. France's third largest city is a gastronomic powerhouse, so set aside some extra dough for a gourmet meal at one of its Michelin-starred restaurants. But Lyon's unassuming bouchons are where you'll get the most delicious bang for your buck (think: three-course dinners for $30 per person). Between meals, meander through the well-preserved Renaissance district of Vieux-Lyon, visit a museum or smell the roses in Parc de la Tête d'Or.

honey trip

Imagine cozying up in a secluded forest cabin or a waterfront cottage overlooking Hood Canal after a day of connecting with your new spouse in the great outdoors. Add in whimsical walks through Hoh Rain Forest, exploring tidepools on rugged Pacific Coast beaches and picnicking in a subalpine meadow, and it all starts to sound pretty romantic. The best part? For just $30 per vehicle, or $15 per pedestrian, you'll have access to the park for seven days. Plus, since Olympic National Park is located less than 115 miles west of Seattle, you won't have to splurge on airfare.

Mad Honey: What to know before eating hallucinogenic honey from Nepal

Hint: It's not worth it.

mad honey,mad honey nepal,hallucinogenic honey

Believe it or not, there’s a type of honey that will make you trip balls. In a handful of locations around the world ranging from Nepal to the Pacific Northwest , bees make a very special kind of honey. Often referred to as “ Mad Honey ,” the stuff looks different (it’s red, not yellow) and tastes bitter. But weirdest of all, it’s a powerful hallucinogen .

That’s right, hallucinogenic honey exists, but should you try it? Here’s what you need to know.

What is “mad honey”?

Mad honey is known to cause nausea, dizziness, and vomiting. Because of its unique look and taste (plus its rarity), it’s highly unlikely you’ll eat some by mistake. (That’s probably a good thing, but more on why in a bit.)

Unsurprisingly, some people seek out mad honey and pay a premium for it. As National Geographic reports , harvesters risk their lives to raid beehives for the honey. Devotees say it has medicinal benefits, claiming that it helps with arthritis and sexual performance, among other things.

Mad honey is made by bees that feed on rhododendron flowers, which give it its psychoactive effects. Rhododendrons, evergreen flowering plants that grow in temperate, mountainous areas around the world, contain chemicals called grayanotoxins.

Why does mad honey make you hallucinate?

mad honey mad honey nepal hallucinogenic honey

Rhododendron flowers contain grayanotoxins, which make their way virtually unchanged through bees into their honey.

These neurotoxic compounds are cyclic diterpenes that exist in varying concentrations and varieties, depending on the particular rhododendron species and the time of year. Scientists have identified more than 25 types of grayanotoxins in rhododendrons. These chemicals make their way into the honey of bees that are feeding primarily on rhododendrons during the late spring, when so many of the plants are flowering that the bees can feast solely on rhododendron flowers without foraging elsewhere. In fact, some Turkish beekeepers even place their bee hives near rhododendron groves so that the bees will forage there, according to Modern Farmer .

Grayanotoxins, whether consumed in mad honey or in any part of the rhododendron, work in the human body by binding to voltage-gated sodium ion channels in cells. This keeps the channels from closing quickly, explains forensic toxicologist Justin Brower in his blog, Nature’s Poisons ]

“The result is a state of depolarization in which sodium ions are freely flowing into the cells, and calcium influx is on the rise. The increase in calcium stimulates the release of acetylcholine,” he writes. This acetylcholine excess causes what’s known as a cholinergic syndrome, which results in a set of symptoms known by their toxicology acronym, SLUDGE: Salivation, Lacrimation (crying), Urination, Defecation, Gastrointestinal distress, and Emesis (vomiting). In low to moderate doses, it’s known to cause heart rate and blood pressure to drop, and in high enough doses it can theoretically kill you, though there seem to be few reported cases of death from mad honey.

Grayanotoxins function on voltage-gated sodium ion channels, causing them to get depolarized. This can, in turn, result in a cholinergic syndrome characterized by the acronym SLUDGE: Salivation, Lacrimation (crying), Urination, Defecation, Gastrointestinal distress, and Emesis (vomiting).

Like other traditional medicines, the rationale behind mad honey is as mythical as it is scientific. There’s a story that the army of the Persian King Mithridates defeated its Roman foes by littering the road with enticing mad honey honeycombs. According to this millennia-old story, the invading troops ate the honey and were easily defeated while under the influence of its intoxicating effects.

What to know before taking Mad Honey

Experienced users know that a small amount is all that’s needed, especially since a substance like mad honey possesses its toxins in unknown concentrations . Others, like members of the message boards of Erowid, a community notorious for experimentation, strongly recommend against consuming rhododendron components.

It’s not just intoxication that people seek from it, though. As stated before, many people claim that mad honey offers relief from arthritis and helps enhance sexual performance. Like many traditional medicines, there isn’t a wealth of experimental data or clinical trials to back up these claims, but in recent years there is some evidence to suggest that they’re not too farfetched.

Researchers have found some evidence that suggests that grayanotoxin-containing preparations could help with hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and even cold sores. These are just preliminary studies, though, and as such should not be taken as evidence that mad honey is safe or effective.

Medical remedies aside, if you’re searching for that next great high, mad honey is probably not the best place to look. Perhaps we can suggest something a bit more reliable .

Warning: These jet-setting newlyweds have tales that will induce wanderlust.

Planning a wedding is a lot of fun, but planning your honeymoon

? That's even better. After all, it's the getaway you're going to want (and likely need) after the many hours you spent pouring over the details of your ceremony and reception. Plus, there's something extra magical about planning that first trip with your forever partner. The best part about choosing a honeymoon locale and finalizing the details of your trip is that you're making decisions solely for you two to enjoy. No wedding guests to please, no hair and makeup appointments to be on time for, and no having to worry about whether or not everyone's having a good time.

Not sure where to head for your own honeymoon? Here, 10 jet-setting newlyweds share their wanderlust-inducing trips to South Africa, Bali, Antigua, Iceland, and beyond—and their adventures are sure to get you dreaming about your own postwedding getaway.

The Couple: Brett and Krista Smith, Charlotte, North Carolina, residents who said "I do" at Key West's Casa Marina, a Waldorf Astoria Resort.

The Plan: The ultimate Italian getaway, with stops in Venice and Rome and on the Amalfi Coast. "We were supposed to go to Italy a few years ago with my family, but someone got sick and we had to cancel," says Krista, an event planner. "We always wanted to go together, so it was a no-brainer."

Stay to Remember: Krista describes hotel Bellevue Syrene (from $370 per night), in Sorrento, as her dream home, with its bright pops of color and romantic white curtains blowing in the wind. For Brett, a consultant, it was all about the views. "The property overlooked dramatic cliffs, and from our balcony, we could see the ocean below and for 20 miles in every direction," he says.

Dream Dinner: It took some convincing, but Brett finally agreed to splurge on dinner at Positano's La Sponda , a Michelin-starred restaurant in the iconic Le Sirenuse hotel. They had a different wine with each course, and the service was the best they've ever had. According to Krista, "I looked over midmeal, and he was chewing with his eyes closed. Plus, Brett never posts pictures, and he put one up." In other words, money well spent.

Take to the Water: In Positano, Brett kept insisting on renting a boat and piloting it himself— but Krista, a self-proclaimed "chicken," wanted to hire a professional. In the end, he won out, steering them through the water as they sipped Champagne and listened to music. "We had no idea where we were going, and I was so happy he made me do it," she says. "It was my favorite part of the entire trip."

Adventures in Venice: Their time in the City of Water included pizza at Antico Forno , a quintessential gondola ride (complete with prosecco), a visit to St. Mark's Basilica—and getting lost in a rainstorm. "Our phones died, so we couldn't map ourselves back," says Brett. A gelato-shop owner helped them find their way, but first they hung out with some locals at a neighborhood pub.

Disney Dreams

The Couple: Cristian and Summer Gonzalez-Mendez, married in St. Augustine, Florida.

The Plan: Two weeks at Walt Disney World. "It can be a romantic getaway—you just have to know what to do," says Summer, who works in public relations for Visit Florida. That meant making time for special activities, like horseback riding at the Campsites at Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort, Jet-Skiing on Bay Lake, and spending two days at a spa. Meals were chosen carefully, including a 9 p.m. table at Capa, on the 17th floor of the Four Seasons Resort Orlando , to watch fireworks. And for extra comfort, they booked a business suite at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort (from $191 per night).

New York's Greatest Hits

The Couple: Jeff Hanlon and Rem Jurado, who live in Richmond, Virginia, tied the knot at Picchetti Winery, in Cupertino, California.

The Plan: A week in the Big Apple. Rem is from the Philippines and grew up learning about America from television and films. "Everything looked like New York City," he says. Jeff, the director of customer care for an internet company, wanted to show him the real thing. It didn't hurt that they're big Broadway-musical fans.

Dream Dinner: A meal at chef Thomas Keller's Per Se is the pinnacle of many a foodie's dining experiences—and Jeff and Rem made sure to savor every bite during their nine-course meal. "I'm a really picky eater," says Jeff, "but for that one night, I ate everything." Rem especially loved the chocolate course. "They brought out a box, and you picked the truffle you wanted," he says. The romantic touch: The restaurant printed up custom menus in honor of their honeymoon.

Curtain Call: Over the course of their urban escape, the couple saw four shows: Kinky Boots , Aladdin , Chicago , and If/Then —after which a friend, who's a theater electrician, was able to get them a chance to stand on the stage. " If/Then was where Hamilton is now, so we tell people we stood on the Hamilton stage," says Rem, who (with Jeff) co-owns a residential cleaning company.

Hotel to "Book": On previous trips to Manhattan, Jeff always chose the cheapest place he could find, but this time he wanted something unique (and close to the Theater District). Their home base was the book-themed Library Hotel (from $199 per night), where the staff are called "librarians" and each of the 10 floors is named after a Dewey Decimal System category, such as Literature or Philosophy.

Top Sites: The couple checked off basically everything a tourist would want to see and do, from a carriage ride through Central Park to a dinner cruise with Bateaux New York on the Hudson River. Among the highlights was a tour of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island . "It was so fascinating to see," says Rem, "especially since we're a nation of immigrants." They also got up early on a drizzly morning for a taping of Today . "The crowd wasn't too big, so it was easy to get in—and we spotted ourselves on TV!" says Jeff. "And Neil Patrick Harris was a guest, which I thought was apropos."

Seeing South Africa

The Couple: Bronx, New York, residents De'Anna and Kimbrad Fraser, married in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

The Plan: Two weeks in South Africa. The couple did it all, enjoying the bustle of Cape Town, the exhilaration of a safari, and the refreshing salt air of the coast.

Animal Planet: Lions and cheetahs and zebras, oh my! There was no shortage of wildlife sightings during their time in the bush. "We saw a herd of elephants in a field as the sun was coming up," says De'Anna, a finance manager. "They looked so big but were so gentle and quiet." Nights meant luxury suites at Nambiti Hills Private Game Lodge (from $220 per person per night, all-inclusive except lunch and drinks).

City Sights: In Cape Town, the couple went one speed: fast. On their itinerary was riding the cable car to the top of Table Mountain and visiting Robben Island , where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. They also explored Bo-Kaap, a neighborhood of Crayola-colored buildings, stopping for Cape Malay cuisine at Biesmiellah . "It was all about seeing everything, not about relaxing," says Kimbrad, a production accountant at a creative agency.

Coast With the Most: The pair hit the road for a voyage that included the famed Garden Route—which stretches 202 miles between Mossel Bay in the west and Storms River in the east—making frequent stops and eating fresh seafood in picturesque beach towns like Knysna .

Best Sips: In the Cape Winelands, Kimbrad fell hard for Delaire Graff Estate , in Stellenbosch. "The lush landscape was so green, and the food and wine were amazing," he says.

Iceland on the Fly

The Couple: Canadians Ricky and Allison Robertson, married in New Brunswick.

The Plan: To circumnavigate Iceland, starting from Reykjavik, in just over a week. They booked rooms ahead of time—in a different place almost every night—but left the days to chance. They explored a geothermal field, saw towering waterfalls, climbed a volcanic crater, and traversed mountains in a rented Volkswagen Golf. "On one drive, we reached a point so high that we were level with the clouds," Ali says. Along the way, they drank glacier water and ate fresh-caught cod at L'Abri (Hafnargata 9, Fáskrúđsfjörđur). Halfway through the trip, the duo lucked out with a surprise upgrade to the honeymoon suite at the Welcome Hotel Lambafell (from $116 per night), a cozy log cabin–style inn.

Bali—Off the Grid

The Couple: Jacqueline and Derrick Stevens, who met in college and currently live in Belgium, where Derrick is a captain in the U.S. Army. They wed on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

The Plan: To spend 17 days in Bali. Their honeymoon wish list—rainforest and beach for her; good food and beach for him—led them to this Indonesian island for the ideal mix of relaxation, adventure, and culture. "When we grew tired of poolside hangs and afternoon massages, we hiked and explored the Tegalalang rice terrace and temples," Jacqueline says.

Villa, Sweet Villa: Why stay in a hotel when you can live like royalty (without paying a king's ransom)? Jacqueline was a fan of the hillside Villa Sidemen (from $158 per night), in a remote area that doesn't get many tourists. "It had an insane view of the valley and Mount Agung, and was so private and relaxing," she says. Derrick's top pick was Chapung Se Bali Resort & Spa (from $165 per night), just outside of Ubud; its eight stylish villas are done up in lots of wood. "A glass door slid open, and you could jump from the inside of the room into our private pool," he says.

Local Life: Accidental adventures are always the most memorable—like the time the couple went for a hike and came across villagers going about their everyday lives, including one cutting brush with a machete and others bathing in a river. "They stopped to chat with us when they were done," Derrick says. "That was real, raw Bali—a really unique moment."

Some Like It Hot: The couple sought out traditional—and spicy—cuisine at restaurants like the tiny Melting Wok Warung (Jalan Gootama 13) in Ubud. Standout dishes included mie goreng (fried noodles with chicken, beef, or seafood) and nasi campur (a mixed-rice dish with meat and veggies).

Beach Finale: A ferry ride east are the speck-size Gili Islands, where a horse and carriage is still a common means of getting around. (Biking and walking are used, too.) On Gili Trawangan, they stayed at Pondok Santi (from $262 per night), a former coconut plantation. Then it was off to Gili Meno, the most deserted of the islands. "We just snorkeled, swam, and wandered," Jacqueline says.

Prewedding Guatemala Getaway

The Couple: Jonathan and Raelynn Pring, who got married in Phoenix.

The Plan: A week in Guatemala—two months before the big day. "Once we opened our café, The Teapot, we wouldn't have downtime," says Jon. "So we did it backward!" In the colonial city of Antigua, mornings began with breakfast at Hotel Casa Antigua (from $63 per night). "I loved sipping coffee in the tree-lined courtyard," says Rae. They took a guided trek through lush jungle up Pacaya volcano, ending with roasting marshmallows on molten lava. Then it was off to Lake Atitlán, where they explored the surrounding towns and shopped in the vibrant markets.

Rediscovering Roots in Thailand

The Couple: Jasmine and Brian Petersen, a graphic designer and restaurant manager, respectively. The Astoria, Queens–based duo exchanged vows in Central Park.

The Plan: Three weeks in Thailand. Jasmine, who is half Thai, had not been back in more than 20 years. "Brian had never been there, and I wanted him to meet my family and show him my favorite parts of the country," she says. Their whirlwind tour took them to Bangkok, north to Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, and south to the stunning beaches of Koh Phi Phi, Railay, and Koh Samui.

Family Matters: Most couples meet each other's relatives before or during the wedding—but Brian's first experience with most of Jasmine's extended family was in a private dining room at Rosabieng, a traditional Thai restaurant in Bangkok. "There were all these beautiful, happy people," he recalls, "and they were so quick to embrace me."

Monkeying Around: Primates made appearances multiple times during the getaway. In Chiang Mai, Jasmine and Brian signed up for an adventurous zip-lining excursion at Flight of the Gibbon . It's named for the endangered apes that live in the trees—and the couple were lucky enough to spot one. And at laid-back Railay beach, "my most vivid memory was of the monkeys," Jasmine says. "There were so many, just running wild."

Temple Tours: The trip included Jasmine's first visit to Chiang Rai, which is home to the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun)—a place that's been on her bucket list for years. "The sheer visual spectacle of this temple, with its mirrored tiles blinking in the tropical sun, was a sight to behold," she says. They also checked out the more macabre though no less spectacular Black House (Baan Dum), which is filled with animal pelts, bones, and taxidermy.

Standout Stay: They saved the most luxurious hotel for last: Vana Belle, a Luxury Collection Resort (from $336 per night), in Koh Samui, where their suite came with butler service and a private pool. "We pampered ourselves silly with spa treatments and spent most of our time lounging on the beach," Jasmine says.

Private-Island Escape

The Couple: Michelle Simon, a TV producer, and Arlen Simon, a health-care data analyst, who wed in their hometown of Los Angeles.

The Plan: A week at Jumby Bay, a Rosewood Resort (from $1,150 per night) a luxe private-island resort in Antigua. Two days in, a suite became available—and with the upgrade came an outdoor bathtub. "We were really lazy," Michelle says. "We ate and drank to our hearts' content, relaxed by the pool and in our hammock, and dozed in the shade of the beach cabanas." An attempt to go snorkeling was dashed due to jellyfish—but they managed to sneak in a rum tasting and took in the stunning sunsets every night.

Driving the American Southwest

The Couple: Scott and Sydney Johnson, who got married in front of 20 relatives in her parents' backyard in Palos Verdes, California.

The Plan: The newlyweds, who live in Los Angeles, built their road trip around their shared interest in a single destination: Arizona's Antelope Canyon. They stayed at quirky hotels, went on hikes, and explored—relying on Scott's trusty Prius along the way. "We both have a deep passion for everything the Southwest has to offer," he says.

Memorable Meals: Throughout the trip, the couple sampled their fair share of chiles rellenos—and the best, according to Scott, were from the Adobe Bar in Taos. Those and the Navajo tacos from Joe & Aggie's Cafe (928-524-6540)—a Route 66 icon in Holbrook, Arizona—"left a lasting impression on me," he says. In Taos, Sydney (a vegetarian) was a fan of the fried-avocado tacos and corn muffins at the Love Apple . "I still dream about them," she says.

Room With a View: There's a reason the Navajo-owned View Hotel (from $109 per night) got its name—its 95 rooms and 29 premium cabins look out onto the otherworldly Monument Valley. "Everyone is out on their balcony as the sun sets," says Sydney, who works for a smart-home company. "It's the most magical place we stayed."

Step Back in Time: The duo fell hard for Jerome, Arizona, an old mining-turned-ghost town that has slowly come back to life (current population: about 450). Their favorite spot was Paul & Jerry's Saloon (928-634-2603), which has been open since 1887. "The bartender was friendly and welcoming, and he introduced us to everybody," Sydney says. "He brought us into this little community for the night. We loved the small-town feel."

Top Treks: They took a lot of hikes—but their trip through Arizona's Petrified Forest National Park really stood out. "It has a similar vibe to Joshua Tree, in the sense that you feel like you're on another planet," says Scott, who works in advertising. And while in Taos, they walked down to the Rio Grande Gorge on a trip through Wild Earth Llama Adventures . The woolly animals carried all the fixings for a gourmet lunch, set up right in the wilderness.

Honeymooners should set their sights on Ogunquit, where sunrises over the Atlantic and lobster rolls will set the tone for your marriage. Aside from noshing on chowder and lobster rolls at Lobster Shack in Perkins Cove and picnicking and strolling along Marginal Way (a three-mile waterfront path), reserve a pampering week at Cliff House Maine , a seaside retreat on the southern coast known for The Spa at Cliff House 's healing, restorative treatments.

Big Sur, California

Yes, California makes the list twice, but in our defense, it's the perfect honeymoon state . If you have not driven the Pacific Coast Highway from Santa Barbara to Santa Cruz, you have not experienced the full beauty of this country. Truly, there is no drive more romantic — not to mention iconic — for a domestic honeymoon. We would recommend breaking up the Pacific Coast Highway honeymoon with a few luxury hotel stays for a trip that walks the line between adventure and romance. Start in Santa Barbara, a West Coast gem 90 minutes north of Los Angeles, and drive all the way to the Alila Ventana Big Sur . The five-star glamping destination, perched on the cliffs overlooking the dramatic Pacific Ocean waves, is truly unforgettable. From Big Sur , move through Carmel Valley and Carmel-by-the-Sea, where you can stop for lunch, a wine tasting, or an overnight stay at Bernardus Lodge & Spa . Islamorada, Florida

Moorings Village essentially provides you with your own slice of the island; a freestanding, private cottage with white-washed walls and luxury island-inspired decor. Then, slide over to Canyon Ranch Lenox , an all-inclusive resort with an out-of-this-world Berkshires spa.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

There are few honeymoons more over-the-top — in the U.S. or abroad — than an Aman vacation. These hotels are not just the gold standard of five-star retreats, they are tailor-made for honeymooners. For a veritable winter paradise at the gateway to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park, book your honeymoon at Amangani in Jackson Hole . From Amangani's private ski lounge, dog sledding, and wellness treatments for two in the winter, to a western hiking and wildlife haven with unadulterated remote beauty in the summer, this is a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon in any season.

Charleston, South Carolina

Whether you've just seen the occasional pastel photo of Charleston grace your Instagram feed, or you've been visiting the area since you were young, it doesn't take much to realize how special this Southern city really is. From strolling hand-in-hand through White Point Garden or Waterfront Park, to taking a catamaran out on Charleston Harbor at sunset, the Holy City will make marital bliss even sweeter. Stay at The Charleston Place , where reflexology and deep tissue massage await you and your new spouse at The Spa and you can enjoy lowcountry fare at their high-end Charleston Grill while tapping your foot to live Southern jazz.

Aspen, Colorado

Looking for the best winter honeymoons in the U.S.? Aspen has to be at the top of your list, with world-class skiing and winter activities as well as luxurious après-ski and endless cold-weather spa opportunities. Book a suite at Hotel Jerome, an Auberge Resorts Collection , where the spa features "natural elements and botanicals found in The Rocky Mountains." Grand Canyon, Arizona

The national parks are perfect honeymoon destinations in the U.S. for couples looking for a domestic getaway. You may as well start with the pièce de résistance and head to the Grand Canyon — there's really no destination more perfect after your wedding. Spend your days hiking the magnificent cliffs and your nights under the stars at Under Canvas Grand Canyon . A glamping honeymoon is made especially romantic thanks to Under Canvas' ensuite tents, many with private decks and wood burning stoves to keep you toasty after the sun goes down.

What it’s like tripping on mad honey, the hallucinogen that (maybe) is an aphrodisiac

The grayanotoxin-infused honey purportedly issues a pleasant high — if you can find the good stuff, by niko vorobyov.

"Don't eat two big spoons of mad honey a day," read the awkward warning on the side of the jar. But by the time I read it, I had already gulped down three. Like most honey, it was predictably sweet, but with a faint smoky flavour that burnt the throat and the tongue. Unlike most honey, consuming it would lead to visions, vomiting and horrific diarrhea.

Mad honey, or deli bal as it's known in Turkish, is one of the most expensive honeys in the world — and the deadliest . A couple of spoonfuls of mad honey, either on their own or with hot water or boiled milk, are enough to induce a mildly psychotropic sensation. At least, that's how it's advertised. Mad honey's psychotropic effects are not well-documented on the Anglophone side of the internet; trip reports on Erowid , the online psychonauts' Bible, are sparse.

I picked up two jars from the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, an ancient marketplace of kiosks selling carpets, caviar, old Ottoman daggers and scimitars, spices, trinkets and antiques. One can find deals here, but tourists like me are also apt to be ripped off. Hence, just to be safe, I bought two small jars from two different merchants, and watched carefully from where they poured the sweet sticky stuff.

I ended up in Istanbul because of war . At the start of the year I was working on an article about Russian mushrooms that make you trip for eight hours and think you died as many times in a row. Thanks to Vladimir Putin starting a nightmarish, fratricidal war with our neighbor, Ukraine, that would have to wait. As a journalist I had to get the hell out, and so I joined the Russian exodus to Istanbul.

When the Greeks under King Mithridates were retreating from Roman general Pompey the Great in 97 BC, Mithridates ordered his men to lay pots of honey as they made their tactical withdrawal. The Roman soldiers couldn't help themselves and pigged out until they couldn't move, leaving them easy for the slaughter.

Well, I'm here now, and I've always been partial to sampling the local delicacies.

The ancient Greek commander and historian Xenophon (434–354 BCE) mentioned a disease afflicting his men with delirium, vomiting, and diarrhoea while they retreated from the Persians on Anatolia's Black Sea coast. Later, when the Greeks under King Mithridates were retreating from Roman general Pompey the Great in 97 BC, Mithridates ordered his men to lay pots of honey as they made their tactical withdrawal. The Roman soldiers couldn't help themselves and pigged out until they couldn't move, leaving them easy for the slaughter.

Mad honey is still gathered by beekeepers braving forests full of bears in the Kaçkar mountains above the Black Sea in Turkey. There, native species of rhododendron flowers produce a potent neurotoxin called grayanotoxin, which can affect the nerves, heart and respiratory system. If bees feed on enough rhododendron nectar, the mud-red honey they produce is said to have a sharp scent, bitter taste and a trippy high.

"Grayanotoxin (GTX) is present in rhododendron forest rose leaves and flowers that grow in the damp forests that along the Black Sea coast, in the eastern parts of the Black Sea Region of Turkey," Dr Özgür Tatlı at the Department of Emergency Medicine of Karadeniz Technical University in Trabzon, Turkey, told me in an email. "Also, there are reports from different parts of the world such as Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Japan, Nepal and the USA. Mad honey production in rural areas is still done by traditional methods in these regions. The fact that it is more pure and not mixed with other honey causes this sensation."

Aside from Turkey, a substantial portion of mad honey is produced in Nepal, where the rhododendron flowers grow; there, it is traditionally used by the Gurung people in the Annapurna foothills, and the Kulung people in the remote eastern mountains, as a cough syrup, pain reliever and an antiseptic. Twice a year, honey hunters scale mountain peaks to gather the narcotic nectar from the nests of Himalayan giant honeybees on rickety ropes and bamboo ladders, lighting fires to ward off the bees. It's dangerous work, but it's a custom dating back generations, and for the poverty-stricken hunters the best way of earning a living. The honey and beeswax is sold in the markets of the faraway capital Kathmandu, or exported abroad. In the early 2000s, South Koreans grew fond of the Nepalese honey as an aphrodisiac . But in 2005, someone ate too much and died, and the honey was declared contraband.

A middle-aged customer I meet in the honey store attests to mad honey's curative properties: "I'm buying two kilos: it's good for everything, good for sex!" he says.

"Mad honey is consumed as an alternative medicine for the treatment of stomach pain, intestinal disorders, hypertension and sexual dysfunction," Dr Tatlı explained.

Its medicinal use in Turkey dates back to 2100 BC, and is usually consumed just before breakfast as a traditional remedy for impotence and hypertension. A middle-aged customer I meet in the honey store attests to mad honey's curative properties: "I'm buying two kilos: it's good for everything, good for sex!" he says, carrying away two massive jars of deli bal .

Mad honey's arousing effects are why older and middle-aged men slurp the sensuous sap, and one reason why they are the most at-risk for grayanotoxin poisoning. (Unfortunately I am single, so I will have to test mad honey's purported amorous effects another time.)

And what does grayanotoxin poisoning feel like? At first you'd feel nausea, dizziness, confusion and a feeling of being about to faint. More side-effects include nausea, numbness, itching in the mouth and nose, reddening of eyes and skin, headache, vertigo, cramp-like stomach pain, vomiting, blurred vision or temporary blindness, potent hallucinations, seizures, delirium, hypotension, deep bradycardia gastroenteritis, weakness, fainting, "possibly" a coma and even hypotension leading to death. The unpleasant experience can last up to a day, and treated with saline infusion. Fatal doses are rare, especially from commercial-grade honey where the level of toxins is diluted, but do occasionally happen. The majority of poisoning cases happen in Turkey.

That sounds scary, but you have to remember there are only a handful of cases a year, and for something sold with no age restriction over-the-counter that thousands of horny, middle-aged men have each with their morning tea, that's pretty good.

"Patients do not generally go to hospital when this occurs and use treatments based on local customs, such as resting and eating salty yoghurt," said Dr Tatlı. "Such patients generally recover within a few hours. Mortality rates are very low in these cases."

The subtle effects set in a few minutes after consuming the mad honey. I thought I could feel a gentle euphoria, a relaxing, slightly "out there" buzz, and a light-headedness not unlike smoking pot.

I couldn't tell if I were high or if it were a placebo effect. Given the price — one kilo is 3,500 lira (approx. $235) — I really wanted it to work. You know, like when you smoked banana peels when you were a kid and convinced yourself, "yes — yes, it's definitely kicking in now!"

I was not some naïve mad honey-buyer: I looked up one of the merchants before dropping in and he seemed legit. But as Dr Tatlı said, the purest stuff is found at the source, in the Kaçkar mountains. Perhaps one or both of my jars was diluted, in the same way that a drug dealer cuts his drugs with benign substances to save money.

So the following night, I tried once more. This time, I mixed a couple of spoonfuls with my tea. A light, gently pleasant buzz flowed over my whole body. I felt slightly dizzy and relaxed, and had a mild sense of lightness and euphoria, even though my head felt a little heavy. Feeling lazy, I didn't want to stand up from my chair, and things did seem slightly slower and dreamlike. But even though by now I'd eaten more than half the jar, there were no hallucinations so far — unless I'm hallucinating that I'm getting fat.

So that's it, I guess. Don't expect to hear about mad honey on Fox News as the latest party drug that's killing YOUR kids . It really is just an expensive thing middle-aged men put in their breakfasts for their jollies — not an exotic intoxicant you're going to take at Burning Man .

Having said that, grayanotoxin poisoning, though rare, is no joke, so I asked Dr Tatlı for advice.

"First of all, don't try to stand up because of probably hypotension, and call the ambulance. You have to tell the doctor you consumed mad honey, and as with other such toxins, treatment with intravenous atropine and a normal saline infusion can be life-saving in this poisoning."

Mad Honey Trip Report

honey trip

Truth be told, many people who come to our site aren’t really interested in the honey’s taste (although it’s delicious!) Instead, they are much more intrigued by the substances healing and psychoactive properties. That being said, one of the most common questions we get is can you trip on mad honey?

This incredible substance is a natural phenomenon and probably the most renowned subtype of honey. Still, it’s very different from the regular honey you buy from local farmers. While somewhat similar in taste, it has numerous other properties that make it stand out from similar products.

In this article, we want to answer some of the burning questions about the substance’s psychoactive properties. We will touch on topics such as: “Do you trip on mad honey?” and “How much mad honey makes your trip?” That way, you will know what to expect from this incredible food and how to use it safely.

Table of Contents

Does mad honey make you trip, how much mad honey to trip.

The substance packs quite a punch, especially if you use it uncontrollably. In fact, there were a few extreme cases of overdose due to misuse of this chemical, which is why we always suggest caution to our customers. Ideally, you should follow our dosage guidelines to a T, regardless of your weight and tolerance, to avoid potential consequences.

So, how much mad honey do you need to trip?

According to scientific research , it takes us between 15 to 30 grams of this beautiful honey to experience intoxication. The user will notice the first symptoms after 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. As with other psychoactive substances, the effect will vary based on your tolerance, age, weight, and other biological factors. It’s also affected by honey’s origin.

The potential side effects

The intoxication level will also vary based on the concentration of grayanotoxin in the honey. Interestingly enough, you also have to consider the time of production. According to limited scientific data, products made during the spring will have a much stronger kick than those made during other seasons.

Furthermore, not only can you trip on mad honey, but you can get poisoning if you’re not too careful. In extreme cases, taking more than a teaspoon might cause poisoning. Common side effects of tripping honey may include nausea, vomiting, nodal rhythms, and, in the worst-case scenario, heart block.

Luckily, these issues are rare, especially if you’re using the best mad honey for tripping. This is why it’s crucial that you buy Real Mad Honey or a similar-grade product to avoid harsh side effects caused by uncontrolled substances. Our company performs regular lab tests ensuring the highest quality of the product and, thus, safeguarding your health.

What is a Mad Honey Trip Like?

Tripping on mad honey is a mixed bag combining a sensation of relaxation of euphoria. As with many other psychoactive substances, the sensation might vary from person to person and from product to product.

Although it takes at least 30 minutes for the chemical to kick in, you might notice the first changes after a few minutes. At first, you’ll have a pleasant sensation of euphoria coupled with a de-stressing effect. Your body will slowly start “dropping down,” and you’ll feel distant, followed by lightheadedness.

There are also cases where you might not feel anything at all. Again, this depends on biological factors, quantity, and product used. All in all, the most recurring effect is slight euphoria and a feeling of lightness. Then again, don’t be surprised if your head feels heavy.

The mad honey trip doesn’t cause a “couch lock” effect. For all intended purposes, it is closer to light than heavy drugs and shouldn’t be that harmful in the long run. A good way to tell if a product is strong is based on the color and thickness; the darker, denser honey has a stronger kick.

Mad honey consumption

The cool thing about this substance is that there’s a plethora of ways to use it. The simplest, safest one is to take it in teaspoons, as it makes it much easier to dose. Locals also take the whole wax and suck on it, spitting the wax afterward. However, this might not be recommendable, depending on the strength of the honey.

Like any other honey, you can use it for various meals. It also goes well for desserts, as well as tea and other drinks. In that sense, the substance is somewhat similar to cannabis. Another similarity to weed is that the mad honey’s psychoactive properties might become mellower due to cooking.

Of course, using it as an ingredient for certain dishes can be troublesome, especially if you’re using a stronger substance. Due to its density, it’s hard to spread honey around. So, there might be a heavy concentration of the psychoactive substance in one area, with barely any grayanotoxin in another.

How Long Does a Mad Honey Trip Last?

Typically, the mad honey trip, due to the presence of Grayanotoxin, manifests its psychoactive effects for a duration ranging between 2 and 9 hours, most commonly averaging around 3 hours, with the metabolism and excretion of the toxin ensuring that symptoms do not persist beyond 24 hours. During that time, you can feel might effects and euphoria. Sometimes, people might feel as if they’re experiencing hallucinations, but this sensation might just be due to the mixed effects of the substance.

Whatever the case, we recommend that you take just one teaspoon and wait for approximately two hours for the product to kick in. Taking additional teaspoons can be troublesome and might even lead to intoxication. Furthermore, you should never take the product with alcohol and other drugs.

For the best possible experience, we suggest that you avoid eating any food before consuming the psychoactive product. One of grayanotoxin’s common side effects is nausea and vomiting. So, the more you ate before using mad honey, the more likely you’ll experience these drawbacks.

Mad honey poisoning

Mad honey poisoning is a bit different, and you likely feel the effect for much longer. In extreme cases, the substance will stay in your body for 24 hours and more, during which time you’ll experience sensations of varying intensity. Besides causing strong hallucinations and other side effects, poisoning might cause other, bigger problems.

A user might notice the first effects after several minutes to two hours. It’s generally easy to tell the poisoning as the effect is much stronger than the regular high and lasts significantly longer. When that’s the case, a person should report to the nearest medical facility.

In most cases, the monitoring period lasts up to 6 hours, after which a patient is sent home.

Mad Honey Trip Review

Mad honey is a great-tasting substance. For the longest time, Nepalese and Turkish locals have been using it to treat various ailments. Nowadays, this food is more renowned for its psychoactive properties and the feeling of calm euphoria it provides.

Like with similar substances, it’s crucial that you’re cautious during the first consumption. The intensity of products might vary significantly based on several factors, including the time of harvest and sourcing region. Your trip will also vary based on biological factors and tolerance.

If this is your first time using the product, the Real Mad Honey team suggests you take only one teaspoon and wait for two hours to feel the effect. Avoid consuming any other substance that might alter your reality, including alcohol and other drugs. You should feel the first effects after 30 minutes to 4 hours, and the trip should last for approximately one day.

Like all distant travels abroad, international flights are the main portion of your costs. In Asia , most of the popular air hubs (Bangkok, Singapore, and Hong Kong) have direct flights to Bali. For people from Europe and America , airfares are lower when making stopovers in SE Asian hubs than more distant hubs like Sydney or Doha .

Hotels form the majority of your tour costs after arrival. As Bali is a world of stylish hotels, you could choose a mid-range boutique (around US$80–100 per night) or relax at an all-inclusive luxury hotel (from US$199 to US$995 per night).

Tour costs vary according to what you prefer. You can lie idly on the beach, join in the water activities (from US$50 to US$100 per day) or take a hassle-free private tour (US$150 to US$300 per day).

The Best Times to Go

Bali has two seasons: the rainy season (November–March) and the dry season (April–October).

The dry season is best for sun, sand, and sea enjoyment. You can fully immerse yourself in the outdoor activities with virtually continuous pleasant weather . Considering the high demand in the dry season, you'd better make your reservations at least 2 months ahead, especially for July and August (the peak time).

You might only be influenced by short afternoon downpours (1–2 hours) during the rainy season . Indoor activities are suggested when it's raining, like a local cooking class, a Balinese massage, or a yoga class. Or you could visit the drier islands of northern SE Asia from November to March for much better weather, like Phuket in Thailand.
